Incidentally, his likely appointment is worrying top bureaucrats of North Block, which houses the ministry of finance. According to sources, the likelihood of Shourie coming in as finance minister has already crept in, perhaps through the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and over the past 36 hours, files are being shuffled around and being put in order. The reason: “If Shourie comes in, many questions will have to be answered.” For the markets, he could be good. His pro-reforms mindset and his absolute distaste for bureaucratic delays would ensure that the incom-

BJP’s Best Alternative

FOR the BJP to redeem the economy from its current mess, its only alternative is to pursue divestment aggressively. And its here that Shourie’s past experience will be of help. The new government can easily raise Rs 1 lakh crore by divesting 10 percent or more of stake in top 10 PSUs, including ONGC, Coal India and NTPC to overcome the immediate problems of budgetary revenue in the face of economic slowdown, a study by ASSOCHAM said last week. It said the top 10 PSUs, which can be divested to raise rich resources at today’s market capitalisation, include ONGC, Coal India, State Bank of India, NTPC, Indian Oil Corporation, NMDC, Power Grid Corporation and BHEL. “The combined market capitalisation of these companies including Bank of Baroda exceeds Rs 11 lakh crore as the market is riding the wave of FIIs inflows built on decisive new government. If the results of elections are for stable government, the market capitalization of these companies can easily go up by another 15-20 per cent raising prospects for better realizations for the government from minority divestment,” ASSOCHAM said.

It was all due to his name being omitted from the pre-meet party statement issued earlier. After much persuasion, Munde relented and addressed the meeting of office bearers at the Mumbai party office at Dadar. Is it a big relief that the 16th Lok Sabha elections are finally over? Afzal Hussain PR executive Yes. I am happy, since most of my friends were too busy in pollrelated activities and could not be reachable. Once results will be out on Friday, our routine life will be back on track.

amily is an institution which needs to be taken care of like a piece of glass nowadays as more young couples have started filing divorce cases than ever”, said Vinita Thakur, a lawyer practicing in the Family Court in Bandra. The International Day of Families is marked annually on May 15 to celebrate the importance of families, people, societies and cultures around the world. It has been marked every year since it was declared by the United Nations in 1994. According to advocate Thakur, a person gets his first and elementary value foundations in the family. “However, with the increasing number of ego clashes and stressrelated issues, it is high time that we save our families”, Thakur said. According to Jinesh Zaveri, blogger activist of Mumbai-based Save Indian Family (SIF) Movement, an NGO working for the Welfare of Family, “The laws have to address many problems arising in the Indian society. We are way ahead in terms of the number of divorce cases filed. We need to educate both men and women about the importance of leading a family life. goof ups continues, this prestigious spot among the continent's top varsities will shine some positive light on it. MU is the only varsity listed from Maharashtra and is at second spot among the varsities listed from India. It is also one of the four universities, among the 150, offering traditional courses—arts, commerce and science. The QS University Rankings are based on four key pillars—research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. The methodology adopted consists of six indicators: academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), and faculty student ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international students(5%) and international faculty (5%).In 2012, a 12-member committee from the National Assessment and Accreditation Center (NAAC) had inspected Mumbai University and granted it an 'A', the highest grade. The varsity had polished and furnished its various departments, campus and its courses for the assessment. Last year, the QS World University Rankings did not list MU among the top 200 varsities. The rankings were a disappointment to India's education system. The only Indian institute which managed to rank close to the top 200 was IITDelhi (Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi) at 212. It was followed by IIT-Mumbai at 227, and IIT-Kanpur at 278. The ADC spoke to Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, who said, “This is news of pride and achievement for the MU. We are always working towards the betterment of the varsity and will continue doing the same. The varsity congratulates its staffers, students and all the officials for gaining a mark of prestige and being amongst the top varsities of Asia.”

he Bombay Chamber Orchestra with members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra paid tribute to celebrated composers Paganini, Beethoven and Mendelssohn by performing their pieces on Sunday, May 11, in celebration of the 66th Independence Day of Israel. The concert started with the National Anthems of India and Israel. Said Consul General Jonathan Miller, “I’m glad that in celebration of Israel’s 66th Independence Day, we could bring together some world class musicians. Music brings people together on an emotional level and this is the best way we could have celebrated our independence day. The orchestra was conducted by Leonti Wolf. Violinist Hadar Rimon who was playing in India for the third time, was the soloist for the symphony. “It was wonderful. The people are lovely and so enthusiastic. They give a standing ovation every time,” he said.

The seven members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in the symphony played in India for the first time. Bassoon player Isaac Leya said, “The rehearsals were a lot of fun. There are no professional schools here, but current musicians teach the budding talent. The audience was great too. It is rare to have a full house in western classical music concerts, but here it was and everyone cheered us on.” Added French horn player Ami Zehavi, “We couldn’t see the audience but we could judge by the sound of the applause and they loved it!” Gini Dinshaw, 84, founder of the Bombay Chamber Orchestra and its oldest player said, “I founded the orchestra 52 years back and it gave young people training when there was no professional school for music. Also, both the audience and the players, who were primarily only Parsis and Christians earlier, have now expanded to all communities. So many young people are interested. It’s a good time,” Dinshaw concluded.

Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Let’s get this party started!

Never before have the results of an election in India been so eagerly awaited, never has the aam aadmi seemed so completely engaged as for this election. It certainly seems as if everyman and his lady wife are determined to enjoy themselves to the hilt and if reports in the local press are any indication, the party has already begun. We know, of course about the thousands of kilograms of ladoos now being prepared in the workshops of hundreds of halwais, and our photographer saw for himself that the morale is sky high. Then there are reports of fireworks being bought up, for what is a victory without the noise and the lights to underline it! It is expected that this Friday will be a real holiday in the country, and Mumbai is not lagging behind. Netas are also going out of the way to book farm houses for their party workers. In the Panvel, Uran, Karjat and Murbad areas, there is not a farm house to be booked for love or money. They have all been snapped up, as have stocks of LED TVs, mini screens with inverters, and of course, it being a dry day, the booze has been laid in with a vengeance. Apparently, Panvel - Sukapur, Nere, Ritghar and Harigram have 60 farm houses, Uran - Dighode, Nagao and Kegao have 15, Karjat has more than 100 farm houses, and they have been booked up. The rent of a farm house for one night is around Rs.6,000. Needless to add, but necessary, the police are all geared up to crack down on celebrations that

spill over into lawlessness. Better beware!

How does this work?

“In Mumbai, seemingly unconnected people are dying, strangled in a chilling ritual and with strange objects carefully arranged with the corpses.“For Santosh Wagh, head of Private India, the Mumbai branch of the

world’s finest investigation agency, it's a race against time to stop the killer striking again. In a city of over 13 million, he'd have his work cut out at the best of times but this case has him battling Mumbai's biggest ganglord and a godman who isn't all he seems.“And then he discovers there may be an even greater danger facing Private India. Hidden in the shadows is someone who could destroy the whole

organisation along with thousands of innocent Mumbai citizens.” We have read a bit of James Patterson's thriller suspenses in the past, and decided we could take them or leave them. We have plodded through Ashwin Sanghvi's Rozabal Line, Chanakya's Chant and Krishna Key, and found them generally tiresome, especially the stilted dialogue and careless characterisation. So we are

wondering if we dare to delve into what is a joint offering from the two authors, titled Private India. Hopefully, this is not going to be a trend. Collaboration can be taken just too far.

The poet astrologer (Bejan Daruwalla) You and I, Dame Fate, Old friends, shared moments, broken bread A karmic bond Old as the misty hills, far away galaxies, fathomless seas We have known each other From big bang and onwards. Now I come to you With a rose and a request Let your slings and arrows of outrageous fortune Fall where they may But not the children Spread your gown of grace on them. Let us, both, share The patter of their tiny feet Their leap of delight into our waiting arms Their tiny tight hugs Their cascades of laughter Reverberating All over the world.

To commemorate the 150th year of the Western Rail Network in Mumbai, a special postal cover was released recently. The first train on the western lines in the then Bombay chugged in on November 28, 1864, heralding a new era of seamless and direct connectivity with Gujarat and other states. We are trying to imagine what kind of existence would be possible if we started our day at this kind of Churchgate station, with its flowerbeds and wooden fretwork decorations, instead of the cavernous building through which one million people rush at peak hour!

Cops immediately filed a forgery and a cheating case and arrested Patil who was remanded to police custody till May 17. “He said he could not repay the loan because of an unsteady income. Court acquits woman in flesh trade case By A Staff Reporter

A

local court has acquitted a 60year-old woman from a case of human trafficking and forcing minors into prostitution, stating the police investigation was wrongly done, reports PTI. The Thane Additional Sessions Judge A S Waghwase, dismissed the prosecution's version and acquitted the accused Zarina Juja Ahmed Shaikh, a resident of Chhotti Hanuman Tekdi, area of Indira Nagar Zopadpatti in Bhiwandi town booked under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA). Acting on a tip-off, the police had conducted a raid on the brothel run by the accused in July 2008 and rescued two girls. The woman had been arrested, the prosecution said adding that the girls were forced into prostitution by her. Both the minor victims alleged that accused had forcibly pushed her into flesh trade. However, the judge observed, "If at all her stay

was against her wish, then she could have escaped, but this has not happened. She has admitted that it was possible for her to raise an alarm. There is no evidence to suggest that the room which was raided was also used for detention of minor because as per the evidence, it merely had curtains and there were no doors. Therefore, under such circumstance, it is difficult to believe that there could be any detention or confinement." Appearing for the accused, advocate Ramrao Jagtap said, "There is a non-compliance of PITA as the investigating officer is not shown to be a special officer appointed for conducting investigation of this case and no notification or order to that effect was brought on record." The officer had admitted that he was posted at Bhiwandi and was not authorised to investigate PITA cases. All these points went against the prosecution in proving the case beyond doubt and hence the benefit of doubt was given to the accused.

leuths of the Kashimira police are on the lookout of a 25-year-old man who sexually exploited his 23-year-old girlfriend for more than five years under the false pretext of marrying her. The family of the accused rapist was busy preparing for his wedding when cops from the local police station came looking for the would-be groom. According to the police, the accused, who has been identified as Bhavesh Suresh Patil (25), works with a private municipal contractor and resides in Rai village near Bhayandar. In her complaint to the police, the girl, a Kashimira resident employed with a private company, said that she was in

Later, he did not fulfill his commitment and decided to marry another girl. The marriage was to be solemnised on Monday. On getting the news of his marriage, the complainant reminded Bhavesh of his promise, but the latter paid no heed to her and remained adamant on marrying the other girl. On getting a cold shoulder from the accused, the girl lodged a complaint with the Kashimira police. “He has devastated my life. wo days after a hospitalised patient went berserk injuring two and killing one patient at the Bombay hospital, the city police finally traced his brotherin-law, who had run away from the hospital after becoming the first victim of the sudden attack on Monday morning. According to the police, Afzal Hussain Abdur Rahim Chaudhary (25), the brother-

in-law of accused Shahabuddin Mohabali Talukdar (42), was the first person to meet Talukdar outside the hospital's washroom. The accused attacked Chaudhary and then assaulted the hospital's ward boys, sweeper and eventually the patients of the general ward.

Investigators learnt that just a day before the incident, the accused was seen banging his head against the wall of the general ward where he was admitted. When a ward boy asked him the reason for it, Talukdar had replied, “There's isn't any reason to live anymore”. “Chaudhary managed to escape from Talukdar's blows and fearing that he would be beaten up by the hospital's staff, as he was the relative of the paranoid patient, he ran away”, said

ment and the police refused to divulge any further information regarding the relative's role in provoking the accused patient. On Monday morning, at around 6.30 am, Talukdar attacked several people in the hospital. This resulted in the death of a patient – Lilabihari G. Thakur (65) – and injury to other patients – Prafulchand Parmar (70) and Janardhan Arte (66). Subsequently, Talukdar was calmed down by the hospital authorities with the help of sedatives and a case under section 302 and 307 of IPC was registered against him at Azad Maidan police station. Ponder awhile... “If you learn from defeat, you haven't really lost.” — Zig Ziglar

Rahul wrong choice as campaign chief I

N the first place, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi does not have the ability to connect with people. He is not an orator. He does not know how to rouse the rabble. This is a knack which only a few politicians have. This is a professional exercise. BJP leader Narendra Modi has proved he is an expert in this regard. Rahul should not have been the leader for carrying out the poll campaign. What the dynasty family did not know it could no longer claim to have charisma which works in elections. Rahul's ancestors did have charisma. It looks like it has faded away. Maybe the party chose Rahul because he was clean. There was no corruption charge against him. During UPA's rule, Rahul was nowhere in the corruption scenario. Almost all the departments of the UPA government were corrupt. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh himself faced charges of corruption. Turning a blind eye to the corruption scenario, he could not have escaped blame. He was directly involved in the 'coalgate' scam because he was himself in charge of the coal ministry. According to Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Sushma Swaraj, the 'coalgate' helped the Congress make 'mota maal'. Rahul could not even stir a ripple, let alone a wave. It is a fact that a Modi wave swept the nation. Rahul has proved twice - in Uttar Pradesh - that he is no mass leader. He has failed twice in that state. This time, he has become a national failure. The fascination of Congress leaders for the dynasty family does not, however, seem to have ended. They are extending total support to him. Chances are in the future too, he will be their supreme leader. Rahul is not likely to retire from politics. He is likely to be very much there. It is certain, however, that sooner or later, wisdom will dawn on party leaders and their fascination for the dynasty will gradually fade away. For Rahul, the defeat of the party will help knock off a lot of illusions he must have been entertaining about himself and help him go on a more pragmatic course.

I

F you think the exit polls have made the Congress Party prepare to accept defeat gracefully think again. Those advising Sonia Gandhi and her son continue to tell her that the polls are wrong and that the NDA is unlikely to get beyond 220 seats. This magic figure is what will help Congress remain in power by lending support from the outside to a government of the 'others'. Of course this means that all the other parties will have to come together, despite their personal ambitions and political differences, in the name of saving secularism. Congress not only appears to believe this is possible but is banking on it. Senior ministers like Kapil Sibal, P. Chidambaram and Jairam Ramesh have gone on record more than once to say that Narendra Modi will never be prime minister and this is probably because of complete confidence in this back up plan.

Your guess is as good as mine but it is worth remembering Rahul Gandhi's warning that '22,000 people' were going to die. Conspiracy theorists of more alarmist bent are already speculating about the possibilities of an ISI hand in this last minute campaign to stop Modi from becoming prime minister. Meanwhile, Congress strategists are busy spreading the word that exit polls have always been wrong and so they are definitely wrong this time. And, of course, they add assuredly that this means Modi will never be prime minister. Political pundits have lent their support by expounding at length on the dangers of Modi becoming prime minister on national time television.

SMS warnings There seems though to be a more sinister side to this backup plan that has begun to surface since the results of all the exit polls indicated that Modi will almost certainly become India's next prime minister. A Muslim friend called me as I sat down to write this piece to tell me that he had received a series of dangerously inflammatory SMS warnings of communal violence in the near future. He said he knew other Muslims who were receiving similar messages and telephone calls. I asked him to forward me the messages he had been sent and here are some samples of what they say. “I don't know about others but I prefer to die fighting rather than get massacred by Sanghis, see my women raped. Muslims feel the same way!” “Muslims of Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Saharanpur prepare for resistance. Sanatani Hindus will help u when Sanghi goondas come baying for blood.” “Sanghis are planning to kill 25,000 Muslims, rape women, kill babies. Modi will personally supervise this! Please be prepared!” And, “Modi is a fascist. Does not believe in democracy, secularism or nationalism. He will tamper with counting on 16th May. We cannot allow that!” This campaign is too well planned to be the work of ordinary Muslims so who could be behind it? Who would benefit most by proving that if Narendra Modi becomes prime minister there will be communal violence across India?

HEN we pay attention to nature’s music, we find that every thing on the earth contributes to its harmony. The trees joyously wave their branches in rhythm with the wind; the sound of the sea, the murmuring of the breeze, the whistling of the wind through rocks, hills and mountains; the flash of the lightning, and the crash of the thunder, the harmony of the sun and moon, the movements of the stars and planets, the blooming of the flower, the fading of the leaf, the regular alternation of morning, evening, noon, and night, all reveal to the seer the music of nature. The insects have their concerts and ballets, and the choirs of birds chant in unison their hymns of praise. Dogs and cats have their orgies, foxes and wolves have their soirees musicals in the forest, while tigers and lions hold their operas in the wilderness. Music is the only means of understanding among birds and beasts. This may be seen by the graduation of pitch and the volume of tone, the manner of tune, the number of repetitions, and the duration of their various sounds; these convey to their fellow-creatures the time for joining the flock, the warning of coming danger, the declaration of war, the

instant reaction from the people I was walking with was that if they saw much more of this they would change their minds about voting for Modi. “These slogans have no meaning any more,” they said “nobody is interested in building temples and mosques. What everyone wants is development and good governance and Modi has shown what he can do in Gujarat.” This feedback must have been passed on to the BJP campaign planners because not even in Benares did Modi invoke Hindutva in his speeches. This seemed to disappoint my more 'secular' colleagues because nearly every one of them chose to omit his mention of the city's 'Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb' in their reports. In the many interviews he has given in recent days Modi has been asked over and over again to explain why he has not done more to appeal to Muslim voters and he has said always that he does not believe in this kind of politics.

Modi’s enemies ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh Foreign correspondents are the easiest to convince when it comes to Modi's 'fascism' so vaunted India hands have in recent days written long, hysterical pieces in famous British and American newspapers that invoke memories of Europe in the thirties. They do this clearly without noticing that Modi's popularity with voters is based entirely on his having been able to convince them that he can bring prosperity to India and improvement in their lives. The two words that have defined this election campaign have been 'vikas' and 'parivartan'. I have heard them mentioned in places as far apart as Bhubaneshwar and Kanpur. In Kanpur, where I went to observe Modi's first political rally in Uttar Pradesh, I had to walk some distance to the grounds in which it was being held. Walking with me were several ordinary citizens of Kanpur and while we were chatting about Modi's popularity a group of Hindutva storm troopers in saffron bandanas and scarves rode by on motorcycles aggressively shouting, 'Jai Sri Ram.' feeling of love, and the sense of sympathy, displeasure, passion, anger, fear, and jealousy, making a language of itself. In man breath is a constant tone, and the beat of the hear, pulse, and head keeps the rhythm continuously. An infant responds to music before it has learnt how to speak; it moves its hands and feet in time, and expresses its pleasure and pain in different tones.

MATTER & SPIRIT In the beginning of human creation, no language such as we now have existed, but only music. Man first expressed his thoughts and feelings by low and high, short and prolonged sounds. The depth of his tone showed his strength and power, and the height of his pitch expressed love and wisdom. Man conveyed his sincerity, insincerity, inclination, disinclination, pleasure of displeasure by the variety of his musical expressions. The tongue touching various points in the mouth, and the opening and the closing of the lips in different ways, produces the variety of sounds. The grouping of the sounds made words conveying different meanings in their

To one interviewer he went so far as to say that he would rather retire from public life than succumb to the lure of dividing Indians into different categories of caste and creed. That should have been considered a truly secular answer but it is not. Modi's enemies seem almost more worried about him being secular than communal. It is as if they fear that if he manages to become prime minister and put an end to communal violence as he has done in Gujarat since 2002 then he might become too strong for them to unseat even in the next general election. So in these last two days before the results come on Friday the campaign to demonize Modi is likely to get uglier and uglier. It is as if those who have become the self-appointed guardians of Indian secularism now feel more threatened by the possibilities of Modi being a secular leader than they would be if he turned out to be communal after all. This is because if secularism is snatched from them they fear that they will be left without any more political cards to play. At the end of the most interesting general election we have seen in a long time we could be in for an interesting and fraught last few hours. Keep your fingers crossed that they remain no more than just interesting and fraught. The last thing India needs is violence at a time when all that voters seem to want is a peaceful political transition. various modes of expression. This gradually transformed music into a language, but language could never free itself from music. A word spoken in a certain tone shows subservience, and the same word spoken in a different tone expresses command; a word spoken in a certain pitch shows kindness, and the same word spoken in a different pitch expresses coldness. Words spoken in a certain rhythm show willingness, and the same words express unwillingness when spoken at a different degree of speed. Up to the present day the ancient languages Sanskrit, Arabic and Hebrew cannot be mastered by simply learning the words, pronunciation and grammar, because a particular rhythmic and tonal expression is needed. The word in itself is frequently insufficient to express the meaning clearly. The student of language by keen study can discover this. Even modern languages are but a simplification of music. No words of any language can be spoken in fiction of music. No words of any language can be spoken in one and the same way without the distinction of tone, pitch, rhythm, accent, pause and rest. A language however simple cannot exist without music in it; music gives it a concrete expression. For this reason a foreign language is rarely spoken perfectly; the words are learnt, but the music is not mastered. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2014

SO, at last, the frenzy of the general elections is almost over. But, a new type of tension has been created with the exit polls. All the news channels have been spending a lot of money and time to collect, collate and analyse data from voters and debate the findings. I was watching the proceedings on a channel where the analysis was good, difficult to digest at times but gave an indication of what is in store for the Indian citizens after a couple of days. Of course, as many invitees to the debate stated, the findings can be hugely interpreted in a wrong way, thus resulting in a change of scenario. The exercise of exit polls is interesting but the detailed discussions and debate tend to be feckless in as much as it all leads to a lot of 'ifs' and 'buts' and that is akin to what a friend of mine describes as: 'If my uncle was my aunt, he wouldn't have a mustache'. — Jamshed Irani, Mumbai

THIS is with reference to the editorial 'Vote For Change' (ADC, May 14). The prediction of exit polls by various TV channels and media show that the BJP will get majority. But it is bogus information that is misleading the people of the country with totally wrong facts and figures. The prediction of exist polls carried out in 2004 and 2009 had ruled out the Congress-led UPA but it was proved wrong. I strongly feel that no political party including the BJP will get a clear majority this time due to a confused political situation in the country where people are divided on the basis of caste and religion. It is high time that the people of India should not get carried away with these bogus poll predictions of the media which is almost sold out to communal forces and is acting like their agent. If the BJP comes to power , it will be a disaster for the country and may lead to distabilisation of the nation and its people. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

D-Day awaited it for the governance for which all these efforts were made. Many journalists, editorial columns of news papers – both domestic and foreign – had expressed in unambiguous terms what are the needs for this country. It is indeed a herculean task to resolve so many political, social, industrial and other issues. The Indians would hope for a radical change in the pattern of governance free from corruption and nepotism. On May 16, the results will reveal how far the speculations of the political analysts come true. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

A DAY TO GO: People await the results of the largest Lok Sabha elections held in the country, to be declared tomorrow (May 16). EXIT polls results are in favour of Narendra Modi. Let's see what the actual result say on May 16. The countdown has begun. All eyes are focused on the crucial day. People have sealed their votes in EVMs. Everyone wants progress and wants to throw out the bulk of problems from this nation. In the future, our nation will hopefully see bright days. Why should people suffer? In this elections, the social media was used to a large extent by every political party. Let's see who will get the benefits of it all.

I still remember how everyone was happy when the Western Railway locals were increased a few years ago. But the happiness was shortlived. The trains never reach their detinations on time. THE exit polls as predicted and deliberated in various Television channels concur in driving home the moot point that Modi and none else will be the PM. This was devoid of any ambiguity and also the fact that the Congress will be made to eat the humble-pie as it could be ridiculed with a mere 100 seats. The Congress should realise that Modi who was pragmatic in emphasising on growth has stormed single-handed and decimated the Congress albeit he was overtly not being supported by his own party leaders like Advani and Sushma Swaraj who seemed to have chosen to look the other way. Kejriwal should pinch himself to get to the ground realities and dispel his obsession with the sillytrimmings and gimmicks only to behave himself. He should have faith only in hard work towards the welfare of the people which alone will yield good results and nothing else. He must realise that people despise him for not pursuing any constructive agenda. The BJP also has a point to ponder over with its dismal showing in the South.

the decline of the public faith in the UPA which won a second term on the merit of its performance during its first term. As if this was not sufficient, the CWG also contributed to its share of malpractices. The other 'scams' are mostly presumptive losses to the exchequer and big sums do not appear to have been pocketed by individuals. Another ally was crafty enough to use its position in the government to work for capturing power in the Writers Building in the Dalhousie Square. Anyway, in the ultimate analysis, if the UPA does go out of power, it should not matter much because it has been in the saddle for ten years and all over the world two major parties run the government in an alternating fashion.

'exit' for the Congress-led UPA at the Centre as Narendra Modi in all certainty would be sworn in as the next Prime Minister of our country. The Modi wave was clearly visible in the elections and his shining Gujarat model of development along with the UPA's misrule and non-governance in the last decade is responsible for today's situation. Modi led his boys from the front with his own example while Rahul Gandhi's campaign was like an empty vessel which made a lot of noise but without an impact. Modi's leadership qualities can be compared with the job of a successful CEO of a profitable organisation. He is not only accountable for his deeds but also has a broad vision for the future. He is a leader who assigns his duties and not like the Congress which works on the 'Supremo' model and dynastic politics. Even the ad campaign of Modi was well planned while Congress wasted opportunities as their leaders were busy making money rather than working towards the development of the nation. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

ALL the exit polls can be proved true, only if not a single EVM is tampered with anywhere in India. ‘Anything’ can be done with the EVMs before or after voting, like between the period from April 7 and May 16. The gap between voting and the actual counting of votes is of 40 days. There was such a gap of 42 days between voting and the counting of votes in the latest Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. The exit polls of the 2009 general elections went wrong, obviously because of tampering with the EVMs. All the European countries and all the states of the US have stopped using the EVMs long ago, because of their doubtful results and have preferred to go back to the use of ballot papers along with the counting of votes immediately after the closing hours of voting, without waiting even for a minute. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

State Chief Secretary Javed Usmani said to prevent any violence disturbing the counting process, crowds should not be allowed to gather outside the counting stations and vehicle movement be restricted. Usmani has directed officials to maintain strict vigil in their districts for 15 days after counting gets over on May 16, to prevent any tension, even as he asked them to strictly prohibit any victory procession. Some of the VVIP candidates contesting from the state include Narendra Modi, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi among others.

ATNA/NEW DELHI: BJP leader Giriraj Singh landed in a fresh controversy on Wednesday with his remarks that terrorists belong to a particular community and termed it as "naked example of pseudo secularism" when secular leaders remain silent on the issue, drawing sharp retorts from political parties. Giriraj said,"Since terrorism is a matter relating to the country and not to a community, why secular leaders remain silent when all persons arrested in terrorism cases belong to a particular community. "Are there only a few to define religious non-discrimination? Is it not true that all the terrorists caught belong to one community? I am not saying that all the people in that community are terrorists but whoever is caught belongs to the same community," he said. Giriraj said this mindset was "posing a danger" to the country. "This is a naked example of pseudo secularism and patronisation of a community for vote bank politics. This mindset is posing danger to the country," said the

against Singh for saying that those opposed to Narendra Modi had no place in India and they should go to Pakistan. Deprecating his remarks as 'unfortunate', some political parties demanded that the BJP leader should be "disenfranchised" while others warned that BJP and its leaders were out to 'ruin' the country. Launching a scathing attack on Giriraj and BJP leader Giriraj Singh BJP, Congress said the party should stop him from making Nawada Lok Sabha candidate such remarks. Naveen Patnaik’s BJD may support NDA

The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha on Wednesday appeared to be sending signals to BJP over its possible outside support to an NDA government at the Centre. While Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik remained non-committal on supporting an NDA formation, other party leaders did not rule out the possibility and favoured conditional support to NDA. "No talks at all. We have not discussed anything. We have not thought of it yet. Let us wait till the results," Patnaik said. However, BJD's chief whip Pravat Tripathy said, "Keeping in view the opinion of the whole country and the state's interest, there should be no problem in providing conditional support to NDA to form government at the Centre."

ADODARA: Betting markets in Vadodara, one of the two seats contested by BJP's PM nominee Narendra Modi in just-concluded Lok Sabha polls, are abuzz with speculations about next chief minister of Gujarat with exit polls predicting Modi's elevation to Centre. Though Modi is keeping his cards close to his chest on his likely successor, the name of his close confidante and incumbent Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel is in the reckoning though some quarters feel veteran leader Vajubhai Vala being also in race. The Flea Queens

Rakhee Mehta & Neha Gundecha are the duo behind of one India’s most successful flea markets — Princess Beach Fair. Shirley Mistry talks to Rakhee about what sets them apart from the rest >> Read on to find out more about Rakhee’s association with Princess Beach Fair

B

oth Rakhee Mehta and Neha Gundecha are globetrotters with a passion for adventure and the urge to explore. Last year, while Rakhee visited Croatia, Venice, Malta, London, Chicago and New York, Neha chose a getaway to a villa in Venice. The constant need to do something new and to bring a glimpse of the places they’ve visited on their travels to Mumbai, was a driving factor in the creation of Princess Beach Fair (PBF). We speak to Rakhee, as she dishes out details on what it takes to get the fair up and running, her favourite picks from this year’s festival and much more.

uniqueness of their product, their appeal and ability to stand out in the crowd as nobody wants to buy runof-the-mill products at a flea market. Give us your picks of the top five brands that made a mark at this edition of the PBF and are worth watching out for. Fancy pants, Teeamo, It’s Our Studio, Harsh harsh, Mujrosa, Pretty Secrets and Copper Brains saw a brilliant response!

What are the exhibitions that you personally enjoy visiting? I am a traveller, so I pick up tips from every city I visit. Tell us a little about this year’s Princess Beach Fair. The Princess Beach Fair saw its fifth edition this year. I love Goa, it is my greatest inspiration. Apart from Set in scenic cabanas by the sea, the event was Goa, I love the flea markets in Croatia and Design One powered by Mini Cooper and was held in association in India. with VH1. Lifestyle, Law & Suits & More, Peacock Plume and Tassels were a hit with the crowds. We also held interesting events such as a live découpage, where we encouraged people to bring in old items and give them a makeover. We also had a pop-up spa, a photo booth, makeup sessions and beauty consultations offered by the international salon, Style27. What sets PBF apart from other exhibitions? Everything! We are not just an exhibition. People are often surprised once they walk in, as the show has something for everyone. Where else in Mumbai can a couple find things to indulge in together? You can shop while your partner checks out the latest Mini Cooper and your children frolic in the pool. Our choice of participants, our bohemian vibe, sunsets by the beach and fashion shows set us apart. Once people enter the fair, they do not want to leave. This is why we boast of a very high circulation time — which means higher retail spending. >> It’s Our Studio was among the top five brands that made a mark at this edition of PBF

Tell us about your association with Mini Cooper and VH1 at this year’s PBF. The whole idea of checking out and testing a car like the Mini Cooper, at a fair like ours, is what attracts men instantly. On the other hand, music has always been our soul, and so, an association with VH1 and reaching the target audiences of Viacom was very exciting for us. This is why Mini Cooper and VH1 were such a big part of this year’s PBF.

>>This neckpiece from Fancy Pants was a hit with the crowds

Logistically, what is the toughest part about putting together an exhibition on this scale? The entire show comes together like a puzzle; right from getting participants and sponsors to outsourcing the set-up, it is a mammoth task, that comes together over three months and the final result is staggering. Now that we have established our name, the concept is easier to sell, compared to the first few times that we had to approach people. The weather is another constant worry! What do you keep in mind when you are picking participants for the PBF? We use a 360° approach while setting up the beach fair. The primary focus is on design and to create maximum leverage for our participants. Of course, we handpick participants from all over the country. As far as selection goes, we choose participants based on the

« 5 ways to rock: accorDion skirts

These pretty, pleated skirts are back in style and so, Shirley Mistry tells you the best ways to sport the trend

P

Tall When it comes to sporting the latest fashion trends, people with a tall frame are always at an advantage. With printed bottoms as well, you can get away with wearing loose ones. The prints you can choose from include floral, tie-dyed, geometric, tribal and animal prints. Since you have long legs, a straight, skinny or flare cut will look flattering. Make sure that the hem is on the longer side. If you are very skinny, opt for materials such as tweed, wool and corduroy, as they will add volume to your thin frame.

PeTiTe If you have a petite frame, you need to choose well-tailored trousers. Your prints of choice should be checkered, geometric, vertical patterns and paisley. Pair your bottoms with plain t-shirts or shirts to keep the focus on them. Also, wear heels or wedges, as they will make you look taller. Avoid horizontal lines or large prints — the horizontal prints give off the illusion that you are wider and emphasise your short frame. Large prints, on the other hand, tend to be overwhelming for short women, so avoid large, busy prints.

2. True blue This blue cover-up from Fashion and You is a great option, especially considering the price. We love the colour combination, as it gives off a psychedelic vibe. Price `399

2. bling iT uP Add some shimmer to your party ensemble by wearing an accordion skirt in a dull, metallic colour such as bronze or gold. The pleats will reflect the light perfectly and make your look stand out from the rest, without being blindingly bright or overthe-top.

3. floWer PoWer Another great pick from Fashion and You, this cover-up has a bright, trendy touch, making sure that you'll stand out at the beach. Price `399

3. Wear iT To Work The easiest way to wear an accordion skirt to work is by choosing a knee-length skirt and paring it with a structured shirt or a simple blouse. Add some dainty jewellery and basic pumps to amp up your office wardrobe. 4. sPice iT uP If you think an accordion skirt is too feminine for your liking, pair it with a biker jacket and/ or ankle boots to add some spunk to the look. A top knot and a leather sling bag will complete the look perfectly.

>> Blake Lively looks stunning in this gold accordion skirt and cream shirt combo

rinted bottoms are a perennial favourite of ours and are slowly on their way to becoming a wardrobe essential. While they can be styled in several different ways, the trend is a little difficult to sport. You need to keep in mind certain factors before you pick out a pair of jeans or slacks suit you best. The first thing that you need to consider is your body type. Read on to find out what type of jeans and trousers suit which body type.

1. go graPHic Prints are a current trend and we especially love this cover-up from The Beach Company. You can slip this easily over any outfit and be comfortable yet stylish. Price `950

1. maxi (mum) sTyle Maxi dresses and skirts are fashionable now, so pair an accordion maxi skirt with a crop top to get the most out of both trends. The look is easy to put together and comfortable for everyday wear.

Printed bottoms are extremely fashionable right now. However, they are a tricky trend to wear. Yamini Walia helps you out with tips that you need to keep in mind before picking out a pair and also, tells you the perfect type for your body shape

Wear a graphic print as it will suit your frame; pair it with a black t-shirt or a light-hued cardigan for the perfect look. Skinny styles are a no-no for your body frame as they tend to give you more of a pear-shaped appearance. Also, avoid wide-leg trousers as they will overpower your frame.

4. go long Want something that covers up a little more of your body than the usual beach cover-up? Pick this long wrap around dress from The Big Door. Price `3,800

5. PerfecT for summer Because accordion skirts are so flowy and light, pairing them with anything, from a basic t-shirt to a white cotton shirt, will look great and also keep you cool during summer. Add a belt to define your waist and play up your look by wearing an array of interesting accessories.

l’oreal Paris 6 oils nourisH sHamPoo + condiTioner I had a mixed experience with L’Oreal Paris’ new shampoo and conditioner. The combination promises to give you strong, smooth, thick and shiny hair. On many of these counts, the combination performed quite well. The shampoo cleaned my scalp thoroughly and the conditioner ensured that my hair didn’t get too dry. After a few washes, my hair was noticeably shiny and smooth. I really liked how soft my hair felt after just a single wash. The only complaint I had was that the conditioner left my hair feeling rather heavy and after two days, my hair got quite oily. Overall, I loved the shampoo, while the conditioner had its hits and misses. Would I use the combination again? Yes! The colour is really nice and while the outfit is a little out there, Anjana pulls it off. The crop top, with its interesting cut, shows off her remarkably toned tummy. The shoes complement the outfit and they are a good visual break from the sea of salmon.

Ladies with pear-shaped bodies are heavier on the bottom than they are at their belly and shoulders, explaining the comparison to a pear. You have the right curves, so don’t shy away from flaunting them in a pair of printed bottoms. Opt for darker hues and choose smaller prints if you are opting from slim or skinny fit bottoms. Avoid tapered trousers as they don’t do justice to your curves. Ones that fit well around the thighs, tend to emphasise your hips, which can look unflattering. You can also opt for bottoms with a little flare, as they will flatter your figure. Wear a belt to accentuate your waist.

No. Just no. There are so many things that are wrong with this outfit. The drape is all wrong, the metallic material is unflattering, the neckpiece is overbearing... and those shoe are an eyesore. If a stylist has dressed you this way, they need to be fired ASAP!

aPPle-sHaPed If you have an apple-shaped figure, your shoulders are broader than your hips; you have slim legs and thighs and a proportionally larger abdomen and hip area. Go crazy with prints and opt for bold colours. Solid colours will flatter your body shape the most. Make sure you wear longer bottoms that end just above your ankles in order to balance out your proportions. Stay away from low-rise styles as they will make your stomach look bigger.

recTangular If you don't have a lot of curves, opt for high-waisted printed bottoms as they will create an illusion of curves in the right place. The idea is to create shape as well as volume. So, opt for boyfriend-cut, boot-cut, harem or pleated trousers. Bootcut jeans or slacks help create length and draw attention to your hips. Also, choose bottoms that feature detailed pockets. As far as the patterns are concerned, you can experiment with both large and small and choose from prints such as florals, stripes, polka dots and animal prints. Pair them with fitted jackets, tops and tucked in shirts to create a smaller waistline.

Hourglass If you are on the heavier side or have an hourglass figure, try palazzos and bootcut trousers to cover up your fuller thighs and bottom. An hourglass frame is well-proportioned on the top and bottom, with a narrow waist in between. Wear darker colours and opt for simpler patterns to appear slimmer around the waist.

The jumpsuit doesn’t flatter Aditi’s lovely figure. It seems to be too long and she looks like she’s swamped in it. However, the necklace does add a nice touch to her look and we like that her hair is neatly pulled back, so that whatever attention her jumpsuit doesn’t steal, goes to her striking face.

We know that orchid is the colour of the year, but she has gone overboard with the hue. The dress is boring and doesn’t have a good cut. But, the worst thing of all has to be her fringe. A wispy one would have suited her much better than full blown bangs.

After those two horrible outfits, we are relieved to have a casual outfit thrown in. The selfie sweater — though really not appropriate for the heat — is quite cute and suits Tisca’s personality. She’s glammed up her look with heels and well-fitted pants.

Survive the StreSS

In the second and final part of our series on yoga for pregnant women, Dev Goswami speaks to Hansaji Jayadeva, director of The Yoga Institute, to bring you some relaxation and breathing techniques and tell you how to manage common discomfort during your pregnancy

L

ast week, we told you about yoga poses and asanas that ensure a healthy and joyful pregnancy. But, pregnancy comes with its fair share of stress and discomforts as a result of all the changes taking place in your body. It is important that you stay relaxed and know how to deal with common pregnancy-related problems. Read on, as we tell you how to do just that.

relaxation techniques From being a newly pregnant woman to managing various chores while you are pregnant, there are several reasons you can end up being stressed. So, we recommend you devote a few minutes every day to these asanas that will relax your mind as well as your body.

dhradasana — the firm pose l Lie on your left side. l Fold your left arm and cushion your head on it. l Your body should be in a straight line and your legs should placed be on top of each other. l Rest your right arm on your stomach, as pictured above. l Close your eyes and relax in this pose for five minutes. Yog nidra — the conscious sleeping pose l Lie on your back, with your feet shoulder-width apart. l Keep your arms by your side, with your palms facing up.

Breathing techniques Meditation, or deep breathing, is known to calm and relax you instantly. Apart from relaxing you, these techniques will also prepare your body for pregnancy-related pain, since you will gain control over your breathing. Yogendra Pranayama type 1 (right) l Lie on your back (as shown in the picture on the right). l Bend your feet at your knees. Keep your feet together, comfortably close to your body. l Gently place your hand on your navel. l Now observe your breathing. l Raise your abdomen as you inhale for three seconds and lower it as you exhale for another three seconds. l Ensure that your chest doesn’t move. l Repeat this 10 times. Yogendra Pranayama type 2 l Stand straight, with your feet apart. This technique can also be performed while sitting in sukhasana or vajrasana. l Slowly inhale for five seconds in a relaxed and comfortable manner. l Once you’ve inhaled for five seconds, exhale for the same amount of time. The idea is to equalize your inhalation and exhalation. l Every week, inhale and exhale for a longer period of time. For instance, start by inhaling for five seconds; next week increase it to ten seconds and so on. l Concentrate on the slow, continuous and uninterrupted flow of breath. l Do ten repetitions of this technique. l You should practice this technique once in the morning and once before bed. rechaka (left) l Sit in Sukhasana — as shown in the picture on the left — and breathe in. l Exhale completely and hold your breath for a few seconds. l Repeat the breathing cycle.

l Close your eyes and relax. l Stay in this position for 10 minutes.

common discomforts Since your body is undergoing various changes, you are bound to face some of these common pregnancy-related problems. While you should visit your gynaecologist in extreme situations, you can try these simple remedies to help deal with the discomforts at home: heartburn: Deep breathing can help lessen the burning sensation. constipation: Practice vajrasana (sit in a kneeling position with your calves tucked under your thighs and your butt on your heels. Keep your palms on your knees). Eat a healthy balanced diet and drink adequate water and fluids. Avoid eating foods that

cause gastric trouble. Drink a glass of warm water (if you prefer, you can add lime juice and honey) every morning. Varicose veins: Relax in the yoga nidra pose, with your feet propped up on a cushion. Wear elastic stockings in the morning to prevent the veins in your legs from swelling up. Staying friends with your ex is tough. But, going back to being friends with an ex who was your friend before you started dating is even tougher! If your relationship didn’t work out, but you’d like to salvage the friendship, Dev Goswami tells you what to do

e know that staying friends with your ex is not only tough, it’s also not recommended. It keeps the baggage of your failed relationship around and the reasons you broke up usually come around to haunt your friendship. But, what if your ex is a childhood friend? We’re sure you don’t want to say goodbye to a close friend just because you’ll didn’t work out romantically. If that’s the case with you, read these tips about how to go back to being just friends.

Is It possIble? This is the very first step of going back to being friends. Ask yourself (ideally, him as well), whether staying friends is going to be possible. If you’ll had a messy breakup or broke up because either partner was cheating, staying friends might not be possible and is not a good idea. Being able to stay friends also depends on the length and seriousness of your relationship.

Don’t Do thIngs together Don’t make the mistake of hanging out with your ex/ friend alone, even though it might seem like a perfectly normal thing to do. You want to avoid situations where you will end up reminiscing about past memories or worse, fighting over the reasons you broke up. We aren’t asking you to put a blanket ban on hanging out with him alone, but let a few months pass

before you go back to being the buddies you were before you dated. Till then, hang out with mutual friends.

might be left over from your breakup. And then, make a pact to never, and we mean never, talk about your relationship again.

Date other people...

control yourself

… But don’t show off! Showing off your new boyfriend is like rubbing salt on his wounds. It is fine to date other people and also to introduce your friends to him — just don’t go on and on about how amazing your new boyfriend is or how great he makes you feel and, we shouldn’t have to say this, but avoid any and all bedroom talk!

No matter how much you try to avoid bringing up the past, there are always going to be moments when you’ll find yourself meeting his eye and sharing an inside joke, or wishing that you hadn’t broken up. You need to ensure that such situations don’t lead to anything major. Remember that you’ve been there, done that; acting on any impulses will only harm the friendship.

respect bounDarIes Feeling bad because he was always busy or because he didn’t want to hang out with your girlfriends was okay when he was your boyfriend, but now that you’ve broken up, it will just make things weird. One of the hardest parts about going back to being friends is avoiding actions that might make it seem like you’re encroaching on his space. Remember that you are his friend and not his girlfriend.

get over It If you want a healthy friendship with your ex, it is important to ensure that the relationship is off boundaries. If you need to, sit down and talk about it to clear up misunderstandings and heartaches that

I started dating someone two years younger than I am a year ago and everything in our personal relationship is going great. The problem is that my brother, is also two years younger than I am — and you could say he’s like my best friend! forget about It About what, you ask? About your relationship! This is a harsh step and it involves staying far away from any kind of memories of your relationship. You might not like the sound of it, but if you really want to save your friendship, you need to be prepared to take this step. The only silver lining is that this is the worst-case scenario — you only need to do this when you find that things between you’ll are becoming weird, when you keep thinking about getting back with him (or vice versa) or when you find yourself alone with him too much (intentionally or otherwise). During such times, it will be impossible to stay friends unless you completely forget about your relationship.

Erectile dysfunction

I am 34 years old. I have been married for seven years. For the last six months, I have not been able to have a proper erection. Even if I get one, it is invariably weak and soft. What should I do to cure this problem? YOUR condition is medically termed as erectile dysfunction. The treatment depends on the cause of your erectile dysfunction. There are many organic (physical) as well as psychogenic causes for this problem. If it is due to psychogenic or situational causes, the treatment will be 'sex counselling' and 'supportive therapy'. If the cause is organic or constitutional, then appropriate medical or surgical measures will have to be undertaken. It is necessary to find out the cause (diagnosis) of this problem first, through your history, examination and investigations. Once the cause is found, only then can the treatment be advised.

and 'desires' are not being fulfilled. If so, then you need to explore why you are driven to put your marriage at risk and perhaps even sacrifice the happiness of your family (good wife and cute daughter) at the altar of your desires. Very often such compulsive behavior has its roots in your past. For this your psycho-sexual history needs to be explored. I would strongly recommend that you see a counsellor at the earliest, so that you can gain some clarity about yourself and the direction of your life. Do not make any decision without such clarity or else you may spend a lifetime regretting the choices that you have made.

Target Rs. 2950

DRRD’s Q4 PAT at Rs 4.8bn fell 21% below RCMLe as margins disappointed at 16.2% (20.8% est.). While revenues came in line (Rs 34.8bn, +4%), the mix was weaker on low Russia/higher PSAI sales. A surge in R&D spends (+34% QoQ) and lower gross margins (-330bps QoQ) hit operating profits (Rs5.6bn, 24% below est.). We trim our Mar’15 TP to Rs 2,950 (from Rs 3,040) as we cut our FY15-FY16 EPS by 1-2% and lower our target PE to 19x (from 20x). High visibility on key US launches (Copaxone, Aloxi) is a near-term catalyst. Revenue mix a tad weaker: Continued traction in the US (+31% YoY) and higher domestic growth (+18%) drove topline. Political crisis in Ukraine and fx headwinds hurt the Russian biz (flat YoY), while PSAI sales shrunk 35% YoY (+31% QoQ). Focus on niche generics in the US would help sustain growth on a high FY14 base, even as the number of launches would be 8-10 annually. We expect the Russian biz to rebound as secondary sales traction remains robust while improved PSAI order book aids visibility. Higher R&D spends, weaker business mix drags profitability: Operating profit slid 3% YoY to Rs 5.6bn as a sharp increase in R&D spends (11.4% of sales) restricted margin gains. OPM at 16.2% contracted 638bps QoQ, as a weaker mix (higher PSAI, lower US/Russia sales) hurt gross margins (57.2% vs. 60.5% in 3Q). We expect high R&D spends (10% of sales) to constrain margin gains arising from complex US filings and improvement in India/Russia sales. Concall takeaways: (a) FY15 capex likely to exceed Rs 10bn due to expansion in new areas (topicals, peptides). (b) Domestic growth likely to be ahead of industry on new launches (12-15 annually). (c) O/S cash-flow hedges at US$ 335mn (at Rs 58-62 levels) gradually maturing (to result in higher realisations). (d) 40% of R&D spends incurred on biosimilars/novel products with no near-term revenue prospects. (e) Limited visibility on incremental competition in Vidaza, Dacogen, and Arixtra. (f) Injectibles account for ~24% of US sales; proportion likely to increase further.

Elara Capital calls a ‘Buy’ on HT Media CMP: Rs. 96

Target Rs. 138

Steady performance on cost controls in tough environment: HT reported inline and operationally weak results for Q4FY14, in-line with the trend seen over the past three quarters. While topline remains weak and newsprint costs pressures remain high, HT managed to post double digit EBITDA margin and 15% better than estimated PAT via tight cost controls. Ad growth was up 6.4%, in-line with estimates as the Delhi edition continued to do well while Mumbai remains in the double-digit ad growth zone. Newsprint cost remains elevated but tight cost controls (staff cost down 7% YoY, other opex down 10% YoY), along with rising profitability of the radio business and lower losses in the digital business led to margin recovering to 12.8%, and higher other income (up 75% YoY) brought PAT 16% ahead of estimates. Earnings trend to revive alongside economic recovery: Management guided for ad growth momentum to continue, primarily due to recovery in the Delhi market ad spend and continued momentum in the Mumbai edition. It expects 33% revenue growth from the digital business in FY15, with declining losses from Q4FY15. While not expecting any significant take-off in ad spend in the upcoming quarters, we expect an ~9% ad revenue CAGR over FY1416E and a 270-bp margin improvement, leading to a robust 21% earnings CAGR during the same period. Valuation – reiterate Buy: Available at a bedrock multiple of ~7x FY16, HT’s standalone business valuation adequately reflects poor visibility over ad growth turnaround in the print space, making it the cheapest print stock in our coverage universe. Granted that near-term triggers are absent, a low base, lean cost structure and cheap valuations make a compelling long-term investment case, in our view, while the downside remains protected. We maintain HT as our top pick in the print media space and reiterate our Buy call on the stock price with 16 earnings-based TP of INR 138. FY15 to see gradual recovery: While the management continued to maintain that a full blown recovery in ad revenue growth hinges on overall economic recovery, which seems distant as of now, it guided that FY15 ad revenue growth should be better than FY14. As per the new IRS round, management noted although the HT Mumbai edition commands only 17% fewer readers than the leader, its ad rates are one-third, implying huge scope to raise yields. It targets reaching 50% of the ad rate of the leader in the medium term, which should significantly raise overall ad revenue growth and margin profile of the company. On the digital business front, it expects revenue to post 33% revenue growth in FY15 and losses to start reducing from Q4FY15. HT was expected to post a modest recovery in ad revenue growth from low base of FY13, and the FY14 trend has been in line. However, given low topline growth momentum and high operating leverage, margin profile is unlikely to improve before we see a double-digit ad growth. While we do not expect any significant take-off in ad spend in the upcoming quarters, we expect an ~9% ad revenue CAGR over FY14-16E and a 270-bp margin improvement, leading to a robust 21% earnings CAGR during the same period.

he asset quality in banks has deteriorated at a "frightening pace" during 2013-14 fiscal with public sector banks bearing the maximum brunt of bad loans, a RBI panel report has said. At the quarter ended December 2013, banks collectively held loan provisions of Rs 98,593 crore, an increase of 13% over the provisions held a year earlier. "During 2013-14, loan asset quality in banks has deteriorated at a frightening pace," said the report of a Reserve Bank appointed committee. Of this amount, Rs 32,295 crore of provisions were held by the SBI group and Rs 45,357 crore were held by the other public sector banks. "Thus, 79% of total bank provisions were held by public sector banks, demonstrating the high level of stress visible in these banks. This has taken its toll on quarterly profitability for public sector banks," it

added. The profitability of SBI Group alone has fallen 30% over a period of one year, while for other PSU banks it has declined 39%. "For these bank segments provisioning is nevertheless inadequate, as net NPAs As a proportion of net advances have risen 50% in a year for the SBI group and 41% for other public sector banks," the report added. Gross NPAs as a proportion of gross advances have increased significantly over the last year for the SBI group and the other public sector banks. Capital, too, has eroded, with net NPAs as a propor-

tion of net worth rising 40% in a year for the SBI group and 25% for other public sector banks, the report added. It further said that as on December 2013, net NPAs as a proportion of net advances equalled 0.61% for the new private sector banks and 1.11% for the old private sector banks. The old private sector banks include Federal Bank, Dhanlaxmi Bank, Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Karnataka Bank, etc. The new generation private sector bank include ICICI bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank.

ith exit polls predicting a Narendra Modi-led government, experts are anticipating a spurt in the job market on the expectation that the BJP leader would revive the economy, particularly the manufacturing sector. HR consultancy firm Unison International has estimated the job market to grow by at least 30% under Modi's rule. According to the firm, as many as 1520 million jobs may be created and which could further get a boost if BJP comes at the center on its own. Echoing similar sentiments, Ca-

reerBuilder India has projected that at current GDP growth rate, there are about 2 million jobs on hold which will be rolled out in case Modi is able to form a stable government at the centre "Apart from these 2 million jobs, over the next 12 to 24 months, GDP growth is expected to get in the range of 5.5 to 6% which should further boost job creation in excess of 20%," CareerBuilder India MD Premlesh Machama said. Meanwhile, experts also feel hiring in the manufacturing would surge as Modi is believed to give more focus in this sector."Manufacturing sector will

revive as Modi believe in giving impetus to the manufacturing sector. Things like single point clearance, good infrastructure and easy availability of land are expected on his agenda," Unison International MD Udit Mittal said. Commenting on the same, Machama said: "Over the last 10 years, India has majorly goofed up on manufacturing sector despite abundant demographic dividend available". "Modi in his speeches and manifesto has clearly laid focus on reviving manufacturing sector which automatically will ensure there would be huge number of jobs created".

Modi-Led Govt Likely To Boost Job Market

BUSINESS

always focus on the overall economic condition as that is what will reflect in your returns. Performance of your investments will always be a projection of what is happening in the economy. Now let us find out what is the basis of the current surge in the markets. Whether it is event based or does it have any impact on long term. It is quite obvious that market is expecting NDA to form the government and give us a stable one. The short term play is what you are witnessing now and stock traders are participating big time on the positives of a Modi led government. Now does this have any impact for long term investors? A straight answer is no because it is still a speculation that a Modi led government will help grow our economy. But if one does wish to take a call on how good this event will turn out in the long run, then there does seem to be quite a number of encouraging signals coming through, especially the economic impact of a

stable government and a visionary leader. Let us now take this question as to whether it is the right time to invest or exit from your investments. First rule you need to follow is unless you are a stock trader never ever entertain this question in your mind. For long term investors and SIP investors the answer is always NOW. It does not matter whether Sensex is 19000 or 24000, NOW will always be the right time to invest. All you need to find out is whether you have money and you are pretty sure that you will not require that money in the next 5-6 years then that very day is the right time to invest in markets. Do not try to time the market; no one can ever do that. Similarly the answer to when to exit is NOW, i.e. when you need the money. The exit from your investments should be purely on need basis and not on what level the markets are. (The author is Director at Fintotal Advisory and Consulting Pvt Ltd)

Abhishek Krushna is all for entertainment

25

After a victorious innings of four entertaining seasons that packaged non-stop entertainment with exceptional talent, 'Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega' is back with its fifth edition. With its maverick judges Anu Malik and Farah Khan spicing up this season, the show will also have the gorgeous Mona Singh hosting the show with her impeccable style and grace. Joining Mona will be her hilarious co-host Krushna Abhishek who, with his funny antics, will ratchet up the humor quotient and take the madness to a whole new level. We spoke to Krushna Abhishek about his new role. Here is what the funny man has to say. By Sandeep Hattangadi

What made you accept to host 'Entertainment Ke Liye Kucch Bhi Karega'? There was a break in my stand-up reality show 'Comedy Circus' and so when this offer came to me from Sony, I immediately said yes because it’s a very popular show and I've always wanted to emcee top shows. Will your anchoring have your regular style? My role is to keep the viewers in splits and keep everyone pleased with my antics, jokes and mimicry.

The joke’s on her and she’s laughing too A

ctress Alia Bhatt, who has become the target of jokes on social media for her general knowledge, or the lack of it, says she is not at all upset but is actually amused. Though the 21year-old daughter of Mahesh Bhatt achieved accolades for her performances in 'Highway' and '2 States', jokes on the actress began to make the rounds after her appearance on TV chat show 'Koffee with Karan’ with Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. On being asked to name of the President of India, only Sidharth knew the correct answer (Pranab Mukherjee), while Varun answered Manmohan Singh and Alia blurted Prithviraj Chavan. Soon, jokes started, ridiculing Alia's general knowledge. But the young actress seems unfazed. “I don't get upset, I laugh at I always say that I'd rather be stupid than pretend to be intelligent,” Alia said at an event last evening. From amongst the jokes, Alia's favourite is: ‘Interviewer – Modi ka first name kya hain? Alia bhatt – Abkibaar.' When asked about the allegations against her that the success of her films has turned her arrogant, she said, “I don't know anybody who has said that to me.” “Rather, people are asking me why I am not excited as 'Highway' and '2 States' have both done well,” Alia said.

MCA IN A FIX OVER SHAH RUKH'S ENTRY TO WANKHEDE STADIUM M SPORTS

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2014

UMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) finds itself in a catch-22 situation as it may have to allow Kolkata Knight Riders' co-owner Shah Rukh Khan at Wankhede stadium if it wants to host the IPL final on June 1. One of the conditions put forth by Indian Premier League Chairman Ranjib Biswal to MCA, one was to allow entry to all franchise owners and officials for hosting the finals. The Bollywood superstar was banned for five years from entering MCA premises, including the Wankhede Stadium, by the Association's managing committee, headed by the late Vilasrao Deshmukh, on May 18, 2012 after he was involved in a skirmish with security staff and officials of the cricket body after his team's victory over Mumbai Indians two nights earlier. Biswal had on Tuesday replied to protest letter it received from the MCA attaching a list of do's and dont's, which have been clearly defined in the letter.

Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan after he was involved in a skirmish with security staff and officials of the cricket body after his team's victory over Mumbai Indians on May 16, 2012. He was banned two days later by the Mumbai Cricket Association. Some of the other conditions put cent parking slots to IPL, no amout by the IPL were to allot 85 per bush marketing at the stadium, no

bursting of fire crackers post 10 pm, limited number of accreditations to MCA members. The MCA will have a managing committee meeting today evening to discuss these conditions. However, it is not clear whether the MCA would lift the ban, as sources said there is no IPL rule that owners must be present for the final. On Tuesday, the IPL Governing Council deferred its decision over the protest letter it received from the MCA against the shifting of the cash-rich league's final from Wankhede to M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Stung by the Governing Council's decision to shift the final assigning any specific reasons, MCA president Sharad Pawar had shot off a protest letter to the Board. Pawar had shot off the letter to the IPL Governing Council and all BCCI members, demanding a real reason behind shifting the T20 extravaganza's grand finale to Bangalore from its original venue. The letter by Pawar had asked for

the reason for this decision of the Governing Council. "Considering that 20 matches of the ongoing Pepsi IPL season were played overseas, the GC took a decision to try and take the play-offs to as many stadia as possible. Several venues had expressed their interest in hosting the playoffs," BCCI had said when announcing the revised knock-out schedule. Protesting the BCCI move, officials of the MCA had handed over their IPL accreditations to the tournament organisers. On Saturday, IPL's GC got involved in a tele-conference and decided to allot the final to the Karnataka Cricket Association. The May 30 Qualifier 2, however, is scheduled as per original fixture at the Wankhede Stadium, which has already hosted three home games of Mumbai Indians and is set to host two more on May 23 and 25. The May 28 eliminator has been allotted to the Cricket Club of India's Brabourne Stadium.

Kohli hails Yuvraj’s return to Powerful Punjab pull off another easy win form, lashes out at his critics

Yuvraj Singh scored a 29-ball 68 which included nine hits over the fence.

ANGALORE: For captain Virat Kohli, watching Yuvraj Singh torment the bowlers was a pleasing sight as he lashed out at detractors of his RCB teammate, saying that people should refrain from writing off cricketers who are class apart. The flamboyant southpaw struck form with two consecutive halfcenturies in the last two IPL matches after being criticised for a prolonged lean patch. He was chided following the Indian team's defeat to Sri Lanka in the final of the World Twenty20 in Dhaka as he could manage just 11 runs off 21

balls during the death overs of the Indian innings. On Tuesday night he hammered nine sixes in his knock against Delhi Daredevils to set up RCB's win. "I am glad that Yuvraj Singh has stood up. Lot of people had written him off, which I think should never been done to any cricketer because we never know when one can make a comeback," he told reporters here. People should respect Yuvraj since he made immense contribution in country's win in the World Cups, Kohli said. "What a world class player Yuvraj has been for India. It is all about respecting him. He has won two World Cups for us single-handedly. I am really glad to see him stepping up at crucial times for RCB," he said. Kohli was also pleased to see contribution from other RCB teammates in the business end of the tournament. "I am really happy to see that rest of the players also are picking themselves up. Now, we are looking to take one game at a time and not thinking too far away," he added. On the changing game plan, Kohli said some changes were made because the management wanted to give bowlers rest after being hit all over the park in the last game. "You tend to try a few different things when the results are not going in your way. We try to stick to the same team. Probably we make one change every game. After the last game we wanted to give bowlers mental rest, and that is why these many changes," he said.

YDERABAD: Kings XI Punjab once again showed their batting might as the table-toppers chased down another 200-plus run target to comfortably beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets in an IPL match here. Chasing 206 for victory, the Punjab top-order pulled off another run feast -- their second 200-pus run chase in this IPL -- to canter to their target in 18.4 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Punjab batsmen struck from the word go, even after losing Virender Sehwag (4) on the second ball of the innings. Wriddhiman Saha (54 off 26 balls) and Manan Vohra (47) managed a 91-run second-wicket partnership to provide a solid platform for the big chase. Saha led the assault with the duo

"Thailand will be tough because all of them are very good. Their all three singles are very strong. Even their doubles is strong. But recently Jwala and Ashwini had beaten them at ABC so they would be having the upper hand at the moment. But singles is going to be difficult. "Ratchanok (Intanon) is a good, strong player. National champions Air India started with just 11 fit players and also lacked the bench strength, which left Dhanraj Pillay no options to make rolling substitutions and give his players some rest. After early dominance the Air India attack fizzled out as the players looked tired. The railwaymen fully exploited the situation to wrest the initiative and take a stranglehold on the match. The airmen were without Arjun Halapa, who has returned home to be at the side of his expecting wife, Sivendra Singh, Girish Pimple and goalkeeper Adrian D’Souza are out nursing injuries, while a couple of their players are in the national camp. The Tamil Nadu outfit fought well initially as they did reasonably well to match the fitter and robust Army side going into the first half break on even terms at 1-all.
