The college detained the and debarred them from attempting their sixth without being put on students semester final year exams. With just four days to go for exams, of which three were official holidays of the blacklist and debarred the varsity, the students approached the Mumbai University (MU) authorities who finally helped them get their from board exams hall tickets just a few hours before their exams began. Believe me! We have landed in your constituency only... But since it was neglected, it is looking like a desert.

As per the rules and regulations of the MU, a college has to issue a blacklist of students having attendance below 75 per cent. It has to send warning letters to the students' parents regarding their irregular attendance. After the warning and declaration of the blacklist, if a student continues to be irregular, the college can detain and withdraw his/her examination form thus debarring the student from appearing for the exams. On April 11, 2014, the UPG College, Vile Parle, without any warning or prior notice and blacklisting, detained and debarred 26 students from appearing for their final year exams. As the students had been detained, their hall tickets had been withheld by the MU. As the college had declared them detained on Friday, the students were unable to contact the varsity for three days – Saturday, Sunday and Monday – as these were official holidays. The next day, Tuesday, before the the exams began, these students managed somehow to approach some of the senate members who promptly came to their rescue. Pradeep Sawant, senate and grievance cell member said: "The college was playing with the careers of the students. These students were not detained as per protocol and were not defaulting in attendance as most of the students had medical certificates and reports. Considering the students' careers, we asked the MU to issue them the hall tickets and allow these students to appear for the exams". BCSEH, part of Sankara Eye care, will offer the discount on eye screening consultation on April 24, election day, and the next day (April 25). To avail this discount, one has to show the indelible election ink on his finger as proof. For this we have to vote on the election day.”

B-town celebrities like Anupam Kher, Sonakshi Sinha, Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan have voiced their opinion on how their Dream India should be like.

T

hey might be a part of the world of fiction, but Bollywood celebrities are well in touch with the poll scenario in the country and are calling for a change. With Lok Sabha elections going on, several B-town celebrities insist that voting is essential and some have voiced their opinion on how their dream India should be like. "I think the present government failed on most of the fronts, corruption happened directly or indirectly. I would definitely need a change in political system. We need a stable and strong government. I would urge everyone to vote," noted actor Anupam Kher told PTI.

Sops for film industry "I want the government to look into the increasing prices, internal security and terrorism issues, have strong foreign policy. As a celebrity I would expect some changes in terms of tax for the entertainment industry," he said. Kher's short film 'I Went Shopping for Robert De Niro' will be premiered on the second day of the the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Florida, US. The awards will be held at Tampa Bay from April 23-26. "My wife Kirron and son Sikan-

der will be here during elections. I am yet to take a call on this (voting)," he said. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has appealed his fans to vote during the election. "We want to live in a happy country. After watching things on TV and reading about people, I think they are intelligent enough to make up their mind on whom to vote for and whom not to," Shah Rukh said. Actress Deepika Padukone hopes the promises made by politicians are fulfilled this time. "I feel we need change (in political system). I think it is the sentiment that most people feel. There are promises being made when we are to vote. This time I hope more number of youths will vote. I feel and hope all the promises made will be lived upto," she said. "There are many issues and things that need to be addressed but I don't want to get into it," she said. Deepika would be attending the IIFA awards but being an Indian, for her voting is essential. "I would vote first and then fly to IIFA," she said. Actress Sonakshi Sinha hopes for

a better and clean India. "I would want India to stay corruption free... Everyone is fed up of that main root problem and also the petrol prices," she said. "We as a nation are looking for change and are serious about it. I believe it is time for change and that change will come. My father has always taught us irrespective of the party whoever is doing well or delivering good one must vote for that party," said Sonakshi, whose father, noted actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha, is contesting from Bihar on BJP ticket. Prakash Jha, known for making socio-political films, feels India badly needs a "modern Gandhi" today. In his last directorial venture 'Satyagraha', Jha reflected upon the uprising of the middle class against a corrupt and unjust system and how turn of events leads to a movement to challenge the status quo. "Today the common man is not angry because of the corruption in the country, he is angry because he is a victim of corruption. Things like death due to negligence or a common man fighting the system to get his pension are very common phenomena in our

country," Jha said. "I have tried to highlight these issues in my film. I feel Mahtama Gandhi was a great human being, a great leader, a great inspiration for the entire country and India badly needs a modern Gandhi today," he said. Jha is fighting from the West Champaran seat on a Janata DalUnited ticket.

Voting is a duty Actor Sunny Deol also feels the country needs a change. "We definitely need change. We need people who are positive and who will go out and do the needful," he said. Superstar Aamir Khan highlighted the importance of voting in his final episode of 'Satyamev Jayate 2' show last month. The younger lot of actors also stress on the importance of voting. "I am going to vote and I think it is the responsibility of every Indian citizen to vote. Voting will help bring the right people to power, otherwise we don't have the right to complain about things," actor Arjun Kapoor said. "Voting is not only a responsibility but a duty as well. We as citizens of India must take care of our country and voting is the first step towards it," Varun Dhawan, who entered the Bollywood with Karan Johar's 'Student of the Year', said.

n a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court has given recognition to transgenders as the third gender. The apex court has directed the Central and state governments to treat them as socially and economically backward classes. The governments have also been asked to provide reservation in jobs and education and provide medical facilities to transgenders. The court said that transgenders are citizens of the country and have equal rights to education, employment and social acceptability. While delivering the order, the SC expressed concern over discrimination and harassment of transgenders in the country and directed the governments to take remedial measures. The court said that the status of the transgenders has degenerated and the time had come for their status to be brought at par with the status of the male and the female. Terming the judgement as a socially progressive one, senior lawyer Colin Gonsalves said that it was a happy day for the transgenders and the ones who have been fighting for their equality Welcoming the Supreme

On Sunday, they received a call from Bhagwati Hospital asking officials to identify a dead body that they had in the mortuary. At Bhagwati Hospital, the Kandivali police matched Anuj's dead body with the photograph his parents had provided. The parents were informed. They arrived later to identify the body. Hospital staff informed

They claimed his body was lying in the hospital since then because the Kandivali GRP had mistakenly noted his age as 28 years. According to Kandivali police sources, Anuj's friends and classmates revealed that he was scared because the principal of the school asked him to come with parents to complain about his proposal to his classmates. An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been filed and Anuj's body has been handed over to his family.

Ulhasnagar-based woman dies of heart attack after meeting brother in Pakistan L

AHORE: An Indian woman, who arrived in Pakistan to meet her brother after a span of 16 years, has died after a severe heart attack at the Lahore railway station. Mahesh Kumar, a resident of Larkana and brother of the visiting woman Sarala Jewatram Badlani, said the tragic incident occurred when his sister embraced him upon her arrival at the station and started crying.

The joy of meeting her brother after a gap of 16 years was too much for Devi, whose passport was issued from Ulhasnagar, Thane district in Maharashtra. She suffered a fatal heart attack seconds later. Kumar said that her sister's application for visa to Pakistan had been refused four times and this was the fifth time when the application was accepted and she visited Lahore.

Speaking to Geo TV, he said that her family should immediately be given visa to come to Pakistan and take away the body for last rites. Indian High Commission officials in Islamabad told PTI that visa would be issued on an immediate basis if her brother applies to visit India for the last rites. "Visas on humanitarian and medical grounds are always issued by us on a priority basis," an official said.

The goons are suspected to be members of the Chhota Rajan gang. In fact, one caller called us three times. So, effectively only three people have called us till now," an IT investigation wing official told PTI on Tuesday. Sources in the department said the first two callers did not give any actionable inputs and information provided by them was vague in nature. "The callers just told us some cash was coming to

Latur and to Mumbai. This is not a workable input," they said. The person who called us three times gave wrong inputs, making us stop a family going to Chennai from Mumbai in two vehicles, the sources said. "He gave us registration numbers of the vehicles and said cash was being transported in them." The I-T officials immediately informed the police, who swung into action but returned empty handed. The people who were stopped were labourers. "We later learnt the caller was settling score on some

real estate issue as they (the people who were stopped) were not vacating their slum dwellings," the sources said. The department has provided two numbers -1800220115 and 02222627275 -- to report suspicious movement of unaccounted cash or bullion which may be used to influence voters. The department has advised general public to carry necessary documents, including identity card and PAN card, while carrying large amounts of cash or bullion.

married and the father of a child. "The soft spoken educated man, who did not disclose his age, impressed her with his behaviour at the very first meeting near Kotwal Garden in Dadar on March 7. He convinced her that her gold ornaments were needed for preparing proper jewellery for their wedding. Falling prey to his tactics, she handed over her gold chain but the accused never returned," said another officer.Realising that she was duped, she registered an FIR at Shivaji Park police station the next day. A preliminary probe revealed that one more woman was also conned in a similar fashion. "After the second case, we

verified if similar cases were reported in any other police station in the city. The Mulund police had arrested an accused, Prashant Manjire, a resident of Pune, in a similar case earlier. The victim was shown Manjire's photograph and she identified him as the same person who approached her with a marriage proposal."While hunting for the accused, a tip off was received that he was hiding in a lodge in Dadar. He was nabbed and gold ornaments weighing 110 grams, estimated to be valued at Rs.3 lakh, were recovered from a jewellery shop where he had sold the valuables. Police said that the some of the recovered gold ornaments also belonged to victims fooled by him earlier.

‘Kamat, the invisible MP’ By Prashant Hamine

T

he war of words between sitting Congress MP Gurudas Kamat and his Shiv Sena rival Gajanan Kirtikar in Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha constituency further escalated yesterday with the latter labeling Kamat as an “invisible MP”. This rebuttal follows Kamat taunting Kirtikar of waking up after a gap of five years. Releasing his own manifesto, the Sena veteran accused Kamat of taking credit for Metro, Mono Rail, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and other infrastructure work which was farfetched. Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar questioned Kamat over the land meant for Metro car shed at Versova being gobbled up by a private builder. He said that Congress Union Minister Rajiv Shukla had to return the plot in Andheri, while the Andheri RTO FSI controversy

Cong MP Gurudas Kamat

is another one to come up in the constituency of Kamat. The senior Sena leader questioned Kamat over the slow progress of the Oshiwara suburban railway station. Kirtikar wondered how could Kamat stake claim to projects like Mono Rail, Milan Subway flyover and Sahar Elevated Road which do not fall under the boundaries of Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha constituency. He also pointed out that the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road was completed decades ago. Commenting on the redevel-

opment of fishermen settlements in Versova and Juhu, he wanted to know what Kamat did to ease the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) norms which was availed by Orissa and Tamil Nadu. Kirtikar argued that if elected he would strive to improve the transport infrastructure in the city, especially the suburban railway system. He contended that this time around he is in direct contest with Kamat and that there was no MNS or AAP wave in the constituency.

aharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray yesterday in a move aimed at embarrassing the BJP declared his party's unconditional support to Gopinath Munde who is contesting from the Beed Lok Sabha constituency. Addressing an election rally in Jogeshwari East for MNS candidate Mahesh Manjrekar in Mumbai North-West LS constituency, the MNS chief claimed that while the BJP was publicly criticising the MNS, in private their leaders were seeking support of the MNS. Earlier in the day, Raj Thackeray released an official letter directing his party cadres to extend full support to Munde who is contesting from Beed. Later in the

Gopinath Munde, BJP, and Raj Thackeray, MNS evening, he claimed that Munde had telephoned him to seek MNS support in his elections. He stated that although he was magnanimous in extending support to Munde in Beed, he was not joining the BJP-led NDA. It may be recalled that former BJP president Nitin Gadkari had, before the polls,

met Raj Thackeray and urged him not to field MNS candidates against BJP candidates. NCP MLC and estranged nephew of Munde, Dhananjay Munde too had met the MNS chief urging him to field a Vanjari community MNS candidate in Beed. However, the MNS president turned down the plea.

He said that as per the government's own records, it is yet to issue notification to this effect. It may be recalled that just days

So also the government had decided to extend the protection to illegal slums up to 2000. The constituencies which are going to the polls tomorrow are: Ahmednagar, Baramati, Beed, Hathkanangle, Hingoli, Kolhapur, Latur, Madha, Maval, Nanded, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Pune, Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, Shirur, Shirdi, Solapur, Sangli and Satara. Among the big names in the fray in these constituencies are Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde, former chief minister Ashok Chavan, NCP chief Sharad

Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule, Industries Minister Narayan Rane's son Nilesh Rane and Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader Raju Shetty. A lot is at stake for all the major political parties with a total of 358 candidates, including independents, and several national level political bigwigs attempting to retain their influence in the second round. It may be recalled that the western Maharashtra and Marathwada regions have also reeled under the impact of the unseasonal rains and hail-

storms couple of months ago. There is huge resentment in the electorate in Marathwada as they feel that they are totally neglected by the government. In Western Maharashtra, the sugar belt of the state, the picture is little different. Like Nagpur in the first phase, where the former BJP president Nitin Gadkari had to fight with 32 candidates, another BJP leader Munde is facing somewhat same situation in Beed. Munde is facing challenge from 39 candidates. Munde's chief rivals are NCP's Suresh Dhas who is

Minister of State for Revenue and Aam Aadmi Party's wellknown Marathi actor Nandu Madhav. Another interesting fight is in Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg where Nilesh Rane is contesting against Shiv Sena's Vinayak Raut. The tension here has reached the peak as large section of NCP workers have bolted doors on him. Other stalwarts include former deputy chief minister NCP's Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil from Madha and Forest Minister Patangrao Kadam's son Vishwajeet Kadam from

Ponder awhile… “It is the state which educates its citizens in civic virtue, gives them a consciousness of their mission and welds them into unity.” – Benito Mussolini

Citizens out, Bollywood in a ward office W

ARD officers play a big part in the construction and maintenance of various civic services. A ward office is evidently a busy place which is visited by hundreds of citizens. In fact, ward officers must render more services without making any fuss. Any information on available civic services must be readily available there. The ward officer and his staff must go out of their way and help the citizens. There is little doubt that a ward office is a centre of civic activity. It is a sort of mini administration office where dozens of services pertaining to the civic ward are discussed. The ward officer has to make decisions: He has to also carry out the orders he receives from the head administrative office. It is a place where perhaps the staff is required to work overtime. People cannot go to the distant civic head office for assistance. The population of Mumbai is now over 15 million. It is clear we should have more ward officers in various suburban areas and also in South and Central Mumbai. This is a matter which the BMC must consider. If the BMC and various ward offices truly want to serve the people, they must change course and make new arrangements. A ward office in Mumbai has inflicted a shock on the citizens of Mumbai. It has given the place for Bollywood shooting! A large number of security men were there surrounding the office. The public were pushed out of the place even as actor Amitabh Bachchan was shooting for a film. The public was denied access to the ward office. Did the municipal commissioner know that the ward office was going to be given for shooting? What will now be the reaction of municipal councillors?

T is interesting that the Congress has brought the entire Nehru-Gandhi family into the frame as campaigning for the 2014 Lok Sabha election enters a crucial phase. After laying low to keep the spotlight on Rahul when electioneering first began, Sonia and Priyanka have become more visible and vocal in recent days, to the point where they are almost sharing equal space with the heir apparent. It would seem the family has realised that Rahul is no match for Modi. They’ve now unleashed the full force of the Gandhi charisma against BJP’s PM nominee in a desperate bid to arrest the Congress free fall. Just trace the manner in which the strategy has changed over the past few weeks. After the Election Commission announced poll dates, the Congress flooded city billboards with Rahul ads. “Main nahin, hum,” the hoardings fairly screamed at passersby. Then came the television interview that bombed. In an attempt at bravado, the family picked the country’s most formidable and aggressive TV anchor, Arnab Goswami of Times Now, for Rahul’s first big one-on-one chat. Unfortunately, the reactions were so negative that Rahul beat a temporary retreat. This happened at around the same time internal surveys revealed that the Rahul ads had not taken off. As the Modi juggernaut picked up steam with a blitzkrieg of mammoth rallies and a gigantic ad campaign, a desperately worried family went back to the drawing board. The results of that exercise are slowly unfolding. The strategy has changed in several subtle ways. One of the first decisions was to take UP and Bihar out of Rahul’s hands and put Sonia in charge. Rahul’s man for UP, Madhusudan Mistry, was sent to take on Modi in Vadodara. Sonia delegated UP to Priyanka who now monitors every minute aspect of the campaign in the state. Not only has she changed candidates chosen by Mistry (the grapevine says as many as 20 were changed on her orders), she is focusing her efforts on wooing the Brahmin community which is upset over Modi’s backward caste politics in UP. The Congress nominee for Varanasi, Ajay Rai, was handpicked by her after a careful caste calculation and she is said to be in daily contact with him. Sonia is personally monitoring the Bihar campaign and her aides are in regular touch

not just with Lalu but also with Nitish Kumar in an effort to ensure that the anti-BJP votes are not divided. She is also more visible. Her video appeal to stop Modi, which was shown on TV channels across the country this week, is part of this effort. Her health is a cause of concern, which is why she is not travelling the way she would like to. But to make up for Sonia’s absence at public meetings, the party is seriously toying with the idea of unleashing Priyanka, especially in UP. Self-enquiry -- Many misconceptions S

RI Ramana Maharshi’s philosophical pronouncements were very similar to those upheld by the followers of Advaita (non-dualistic) Vedanta which has flourished for well over a thousand years. Sri Ramana Maharshi and the Advaitins agree on most theoretical matters but their attitudes to practice are radically different. While Sri Ramana Maharshi advocated self-enquiry, most advaitic teachers recommended a system of meditation which mentally affirmed that the Self was the only reality. These affirmations such as ‘I am Brahman’ or ‘I am He’, are usually used as mantras, or, more rarely, one meditates on their meaning and tries to experience the implications of the statement. Because self-enquiry often starts with the question ‘Who am I?’, many of the traditional followers of Advaita assumed that the answer to the question was ‘I am Brahman’ and they occupied their minds with repetitions of this mental solution. Sri Ramana Maharshi criticised this approach by saying that while the mind was constantly engaged in finding or repeating solutions to the question it would never sink into its source and disappear. He was equally critical, for the same reason, of those who tried to use ‘Who am I?’ as a mantra, saying that both approaches missed the point of self-enquiry. The question ‘Who am I?’, he said, is not an invitation

ECs, H.S. Brahma and Naseem Zaidi. Then, for the new year, she mailed them special greetings cards that she had designed with something that she painted. All this was done on the advice of Lok Sabha MP Mukul Roy, who has been her interlocutor in Delhi. But the PR exercise clearly failed to soften the EC. The three-man Commission has been pretty strict about monitoring the election process in West Bengal, ordering the transfer of several officers considered close to the Trinamool Congress. The unkindest blow was the transfer of Barun Roy, officer on special duty in the Bengal election office. Barun was Mukul Roy’s private secretary when the latter was shipping minister in the Manmohan Singh government. When the Trinamool Congress withdrew from the government, Mamata had Barun Roy shifted to West Bengal and he was appointed in the election office. Word got back to the commission that Barun Roy would meet with his former boss Mukul Roy regularly in a private house. The meetings caused a flutter, especially after the election process started. After establishing who the boss is during the polls, the CEC ordered the Bengal election office to send Barun Roy to UP as an observer. The transfer was described as “routine”, but Mamata is fuming. She sees it as a slight and is believed to be ranting at her confidantes about the futility of sending out Fab India kurtas for Diwali!

to analyse the mind and to come to conclusions about its nature, nor is it a mantric formula, it is simply a tool which facilitates redirecting attention from the objects of thought and perception to the thinker and perceiver of them. In Sri Ramana Maharshi’s opinion, the solution to the question ‘Who am I?’ is not to be found in or by the mind since the only real answer is the experience of the absence of mind.Another widespread misunderstanding arose from the belief that the Self could be

MATTER & SPIRIT discovered by mentally rejecting all the objects of thought and perception as not-self. Traditionally this is called the Neti-Neti approach (not this, not this). The practitioner of this system verbally rejects all the objects that the ‘I’ identifies with –‘I am not the mind’, ‘ I am not the body’, etc.in the expectation that the real ‘I’ will eventually be experienced in the pure uncontaminated form. Hinduism calls this practice ‘self-enquiry’ and, because of the identity of names, it was often confused with Sri Ramana Maharshi’s method. Sri Ramana Maharshi’s attitude to this traditional system of self-analysis was wholly negative and he discouraged his own followers from practis-

ing it by telling them that it was an intellectual activity which could not take them beyond the mind. In his standard reply to questions about the effectiveness of this practice he would say that the ‘I’-thought is sustained by such acts of discrimination and that the ‘I’ which eliminates the body and the mind as ‘not I’ can never eliminate itself. The followers of the ‘I am Brahman’ and ‘Neti-Neti’ schools share a common belief that the Self can be discovered by the mind, either through affirmation or negation. This belief that the mind can, by its own activities, reach the Self is the root of most of the misconceptions about practice of self-enquiry. A classic example of this is the belief that self-enquiry involves concentrating on a particular centre in the body called the Heartcentre. This widely held view results from a misinterpretation of some of Maharshi’s statements on the Heart, and to understand how this belief has come about it will be necessary to take a closer look. In describing the origin of the ‘I’-thought he sometimes said that it arose to the brain through a channel which started from a centre in the right hand side of the chest. He called this centre the Heart centre and said that when the ‘I’-thought subsided into the Self it went back into the centre and disappeared. — Extracted from The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi by David Godman

NaMo must prove he is secular THE edit-page article 'The demolition of pluralism' by the veteran columnist, Kuldip Nayar (ADC, Apr.15) is an excellent piece of objective writing as is to be expected from a senior journalist like Nayar. He has stated categorically that "the Babri Masjid destruction is a watershed in our country's ethos of pluralism" and goes on to point out that it was the beginning of the militancy among the affected community which "feels insecure, particularly on the prospects of Modi becoming the Prime Minster". He has drawn attention to the historical fact that "India has been a multireligious society for centuries and the society has learnt to live that way" and that it will be disastrous to try to undo this reality. He also laments quite rightly the absence of even an oblique mention of the word 'secularism' in the BJP's election manifesto. He is not prepared to buy the argument of the 'new converts to the BJP' that the Lotus party swears by the Constitution which is an expression of faith in secularism without spelling it out. Nayar counters this specious argument effectively by pointing out that the Babri Masjid was demolished "despite the Constitution". Therefore one would readily agree with him

THE statement made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) senior leader Murli Manaohar Joshi that there is no Narendra Modi wave but BJP wave proves that all is not well in the party which is a divided house due to authoritative style of functioning. I strongly feel that there is no wave of any political party in the current confused political situation and the worst sufferers are BJP and its leadership which due to ego clash among its leaders the party is divided and heading for disastrous situation and is likely to be divided more due to Modi in coming days. Since Modi has sidelined all the senior party leaders like L.K. Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Sushma Swaraj and expelled Jaswant Singh the fact remains that the BJP is divided house and will not get the FACTUALLY SPEAKING: As Kuldip majority of halfway mark of 272+ Nayar has rightly pointed out in his seats and has to depend on its aleditorial, there is hardly even an oblique lies and regional parties to form mention of the word 'secularism' in the the impossible government at the BJP's election manifesto. Is Manmohan weakest PM? MANMOHAN Singh is the most learned and intelligent Prime Minister our country has ever had but perhaps the weakest head of State ever witnessed till date. The reason being he is an economist and not a politician as he became the first non-elected PM who got a backdoor entry to the office through the Rajya Sabha route. You don't need rocket science to understand who was the power centre of the UPA government and Manmohan Singh surely was singing Sonia Gandhi's tunes which he has often acknowledged and never denied. Sanjaya Baru's book calling Manmohan an accidental PM does not surprise us as the fact that Manmohan Singh is a proxy PM is known to all. What is surprising is the timing of Baru's book; he is trying to cash in on his book by trying to create a controversy. The nation will not forgive Manmohan Singh as history would judge him as the most incompetent PM our country has ever had! — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

Without Amit and Azam the whole election would have lost its colour (the communal one in particular). We would have died just as Indians without knowing whether we were Hindus or Muslims. Their jugalbandi kept the atmosphere lively and hot with channel after channel airing their "heroics" day in and day out. As for Mr Modi, his closest secrets about his profession (chaiwala) and personal life would never have seen the light but for the compulsion of the election commission not to leave any column blank in the nomination paper and the compulsion of caste politics. Yet he was still connected, even if nominally, to Mumbai, through the Union. His resignation cut off this very last link. After accepting his resignation, the Union co-opted Rajya Sabha member, Hussain Dalwai, as the President of the union for the interim period. And the upcoming election will now formally anoint the new leader, most probably Dalwai again. Before the baton is passed, we met A.L. (L) George Fernandes; Anthony Lawrence Quadros last for decades. Sitting in his small but airy office, he beams with pleasure as he talks about the man who is still his hero. Searching for adjectives in the space to describe Fernandes, he comes up with “strong”; “a good orator” but unable to do justice to the image that he has in mind he sums it up in one sentence: “He was my god.” Looking into a diary that is as dilapidated as the building itself, Quadros recounts that in 1963, when the government refused to approve a taxi-fare hike, he “warned and challenged” the government that he would print tariff cards himself and distribute them among taxi-drivers if the fare-hike wasn’t approved. “And he did it,” says Quadros and takes a moment for the memory to sink into the conversation and then goes on, “But of course there was a price to be paid. He was lodged in Arthur Road jail for 12 months but ultimately, the fare was hiked from 50 paise to 60 paise.” As the President of the Bombay Taximen’s Union, Fernandes wielded an influence so profound that thousands would gather at his

call. In May 1974, he led the All India Railway Strike which saw 30,000 trade unionists being arrested by the police. It needs special mention in the history of agitations led by the trade unions in India because it was the first that was aimed not against any private enterprise but the government itself. Fearless and fiery — he believed in struggle as the ultimate means to achieve things in life. Quadros recalls that in 1968 when the government had decided to reposition the seal of the taxi meter from near the gears to inside the bonnet, he did not oppose the decision. The move would not just have increased the expenditure but also the wear and tear on the engine. Several taxi owners then approached Fernandes with the complaint that Quadros was not willing to oppose this decision. At 6 am, he called Quadros to his home and had handed him down something that would stay with him for years, “You can’t achieve anything in life without struggle. And it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. What matters is that you fought.” If that resignation letter had not

come in, would George have “continued” as President?half? Quadros thinks, yes. Because of the sacrifices he had made for the taxi drivers, he was their hero. From some things, one cannot “move on”. A lot has indeed changed in over the years, not least among them, Quadros himself, at least in the way he looks. That old walrus moustache is now a muted shadow of itself, the hairline has receded just like the history of the union he heads. Now, there are many unions jostling for space and attention in a city that is miserly in handing out both to its seekers. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Maharashtra NavNirman Sena (MNS), Shiv Sena etc. have come up with their own unions but he calls them “businesses” with various vested interests. He declares that their presence does not threaten the old union which still has 26,000 members, because none of them addresses the grievances of the taxi drivers in Mumbai the way they do. Agreeing that with the introduction of fleet taxi services, the iconic black and yellow cabs in Mumbai, as exclusive as the black cabs in London, have lost their exclusivity. But the real; problem, he feels, is the increasing number of rogue vehicles in the city that offer cheaper rides to people. He pegs the number of such vehicles at 300,000! The old order has already given way to the new one. With the recent Maharashtra government order to phase out the old Premier Padmini cabs, merely 3,000 of them are still rolling on the roads as opposed to 38,000 in the past. But he seems to have taken all of it in his stride. He doesn’t resent or ignore them. He just notes down all thoughts pertaining to them down in the same old diary that boasts of records that date back to 1963.

RCP complains to EC against Ganesh Naik By A Staff Reporter

A

day after Shiv Sena candidate from Thane LS seat Rajan Vichare alleged District Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik of NCP was misusing his position in the constituency, Rashtravadi Congress Party has on Tuesday filed a similar complaint against Naik and his son. In a complaint to the Election Commission and the district election office, RCP general secretary and party candidate from Thane LS seat, Vinod Gangwal has alleged that Ganesh Naik and his son and sitting MP from the constituency, Sanjiv Naik, had earlier got cheques from contractors. He said these cheques worth several crores have surfaced now and are being 'donated' to various organisations, associations and self-help groups to woo them and seek their votes. Gangwal urged the EC to take stern action against the Naiks in this connection. The Sena nominee's aide Vijay Nahata said no names of beneficiaries were written on the cheques.

very year millions of insurance policies are sold across the world, making insurance a big ticket sector. It's not just that the industry provides financial protection to people over the world, it also employs a large number of people of diverse capabilities and qualifications. Ever since India opened its market to the insurance sector in 2000, the industry has grown dramatically. With a number of private players in the field, the industry has evolved into an organised sector providing enhanced products and services. With major international finance companies shifting their business and knowledge process to India, the employment opportunities too have expanded manifold. Yet, the insurance sector has remained limited to young Indians seeking new employment. This perception is because of the limited awareness of career prospects in the sector. Speak of insurance as a career option, and most young Indians visualise a sales agents selling insurance policies. Among these options, actuarial and underwriting jobs are rather exclusive to the insurance industry, and equipping yourself in these skills can make you a bankable employee.

LET’S TAKE A FRAGMENTED LOOK AT JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN THE INSURANCE SECTOR:

« STUDYING ABROAD There are a few things to keep in mind when applying to the UK. The first is the UCAS. UCAS is a detailed form that needs to be filled out that must be submitted to all the colleges you apply to. You can apply to a maximum of 5 universities through the UCAS. You will need to have a teacher from your school write you a recommendation letter. To avoid delays in submitting your application, it is best to identify this teacher as soon as possible and let them know that you would like them to write it for you. In addition to the UCAS, you will have to submit official transcripts from your school/junior college and write a statement of purpose. Remember, that if you are applying to Oxford, the process is a little different. While you will have to submit your transcripts, recommendation letter and UCAS form, you might have to take a test for Oxford and have an interview at a later stage in the application process. It is best to call the British Council nearest to you to register for the test. Most tests have a registration deadline so it is vital you do that right away!

I have just finished studying Spanish Standard Level for one year at the “AB initio” level. I know I want to continue studying Spanish in college and would like to major in it, however, I might want to do a double major in Economics and Spanish. Is it advisable to go to Spain or should I go to the U.S.? —Rashi, The liberal arts education program in the US would be a feasible option for you to pursue Spanish and Economics. Spanish classes would be intensive and in most cases you would be required to do a semester abroad in Spain to enhance your skills. You could do up to a year in Spain with an affiliated university. If you are considering studying in Spain this would give you a good grasp of the language. However, with most classes being taught in Spanish you would have to be proficient in the language before you begin your courses. In addition you would possibly need to take a language proficiency test that would be one of the requirements specified by the university upon enrollment. The range of universities is greater in the U.S. with more

opportunities to study a variety of subjects in addition to Economics and Spanish. The universities in Spain are also well known. However, I would not recommend Spain over the U.S. unless for personal reasons like finances, being closer to India etc.

Currently I am studying International Relations at the undergraduate level and want to get my masters in the U.S. How do I apply? —Umang Most American Universities offer a two-year M.A. in International Relations. As an international student applying to a college in the U.S., you will be required to submit proof of a Bachelors degree, transcripts, two letters of recommendation from faculty members, proof of proficiency in English (TOEFL or IELTS), a statement of purpose (explaining why you are choosing this program, your experience in the field and your future goals) and your GRE scores. Some documented international experience can be helpful to strengthen your application.

Please note that application deadlines are usually eight to ten months before the program begins. Depending on your scores, here are some colleges you can consider: Georgetown University, Columbia University, UCLA, University of Michigan, and UC Berkeley.

This contest was for students from standard 5 to 10 and was open to all schools in India. Fevicol Science project Challenge is a quest to nurture the

concepts. Therefore, this contest provides the students an opportunity to challenge their own creativity and convert class room learning into workable concepts and models. The challenge began in mid October 2013 in classes 5 – 10. The first round was judged in the school itself by the principals and teachers. Schools uploaded the pictures of the winning projects on

the company website along with a brief on the chosen topic, principles and working of the 3D model. McConaughey is phenomenal as the sick but determined Woodroof. You really applaud his spirit in the face of strong opposition and his will to keep fighting. We see Woodroof transform from a homophobic yahoo to a man sensitive enough to fight for the rights of the marginalised sections of society. Leto makes the character of Rayon real.

One scene that deserves special mention is when Rayon goes to ask his estranged dad for money for Woodroof because Rayon cares so much for him. With some great acting in the movie, it won the Oscars for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The movie illustrates the great lengths a man can go to if he truly believes in a cause.

The Oculus Rift is a new virtual reality headset that lets players step inside their favorite games and virtual worlds. Oculus recently presented one of its coolest gadgets – its latest prototype, code-named "Crystal Cove" – Oculus VR has taken a massive leap forward, eliminating the stomach-churning motion blur that has plagued previous generations of VR headsets, and adding sensors and a camera to track the

The Crystal Cove version's 1080p OLED display is amazingly sharp and bright. The Oculus Rift creates a stereoscopic 3D view with excellent depth, scale and parallax. The event management industry is an extremely demanding one and to be able to multitask and be proactive will prove to be a boon for you. Last but not the least, you need to be clientfocused and committed to meeting the needs of your customers as well. <<Shubhra Extroverts usually have an Bhardwaj advantage in this field due to Mehandirata their outgoing and easygoing nature. They like making new friends, have lots of contacts and a huge network of people, which is gold currency in professional circles. Extroverts have a natural knack for interpersonal interactions, and therefore make inspiring leaders. The excitement of being a part of this industry is the people, the movement and the exposure. There is huge pressure when one is working in this field, as these are events that are live and normally the whole brand, state or national pride is at stake for efficient and flawless delivery. One needs to be a thorough professional to withstand the immense pressure and demands. The following would be expected of you as an event manager: Development, production and delivery of projects from proposal right up to delivery. Delivering events on time, within budget, that meet (and hopefully exceed) expectations. Setting, communicating and maintaining timelines and priorities on every project. Communicating, maintaining and developing client relationships. Managing supplier relationships. Managing operational and administrative

functions to ensure that specific projects are delivered efficiently. Providing leadership, motivation, direction and support to your team. Travelling on site for inspections and project managing events Being responsible for all project budgets from start to finish. Ensuring excellent customer service and quality delivery. Event management can sound like such a glamorous career, and in a lot of ways it really is. No two days will be the same as you work on different events each day. The events will range from anything as small as business meetings, to events as huge as concerts or sporting events. There will also be all of the in-between sized events as well. Exciting things such as sporting events, fashion shows, launches, exhibitions and fairs. That said, being an event planner is undoubtedly an exhausting job. You have to do a lot of running around, a lot of coordination and planning and work in tandem with large groups of people – your client, vendors, workers, other departments and the works. You may be dealing with hundreds of people while planning a single event and thousands of people on the day of the event! So be prepared to work those really long hours. One must also remember that you are not attending these elaborate events as a guest. You are there to work and after weeks or even months of working hard on this project, the actual event is the moment you are pulling it all together. Overall, event management as a career is an extremely challenging and demanding but an equally exciting option. So if you have an appetite for challenges and would love to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, a career in event management is definitely for you.

The school counsellor thinks that she has a language issue. Since your daughter has an ability to speak two languages, she would have acquired the second at an early age in school. Some children raised in a bilingual atmosphere tend to have a language delay; however it is only temporary in nature. You can use the ‘one parent one language strategy’. This means that each parent should select a language in which to speak to the child. Ensure that your child experiences each language frequently.

‘Learning can never have any boundaries’ says Joshua Salvador D'souza, Sales Officer (Exports), Tilaknagar Industries Ltd.

A

fter graduation (I did a Bachelor of Management), I was lost like most people my age. But I was never in a rush to search for a job after my boards. I told myself I would take the very first opportunity I get and I had a job before my results. I worked there for a few months and thought I would stay there for many years to come. But then I decided to do a short term computer course which later helped me when I got an offer in my present company. I decided to enter this field because it was a great opportunity for me to learn; and learning can never have boundaries. I had ‘import/export’ as a subject in college and thanks to my professor Sohel Kazi, I developed a liking towards the import-export line of work; but never did I think I could make it a profession. There is a lot to learn provided the career you get into is something you like. It is very important to like and enjoy your work because that is when you put in your hundred per cent effort and energy. Work is then enjoyable and not a drudgery. Import-export is full of surprises. There are many new things to learn including firsthand experience on how things really work at the other end. From co-ordinating with factory personnel to getting the necessary documents and legal formalities with the buyers, the subject is very fascinating. Education prepares you for the job ahead and therefore it is extremely important. BMS has surely helped me a lot in my present and past jobs. From learning marketing of a product to dealing with C level executives, BMS helps more than some people may think. Training too is necessary. When you are a fresher, mistakes are bound to happen and without learning from them no one can improve. One needs to know the fields own core competency, without which one will not know how you can improve. Self-improvement is a must. Learning is an ongoing process and does not stop with a college degree. College degrees provide a lot of theoretical knowledge but once you start working you have to put all that information into practice and that is both the exciting and

challenging part of working in importexport. Education provides you with a sound base, a good foundation and you have to take your progress from there, with dedication and responsibility. My job profile as Sales Officer (Exports) is to handle export sales and marketing, which includes checking of shipments for exports and co-ordinating with various personnel about the export shipment. Except my college fees, there was no investment involved. As a fresher, one can expect to earn between Rs.90,000 to Rs.1,80,000 per year. It takes a lot of time and after many years of experience one can become a thorough professional in this field. But as long as you are improving yourself, there will always be progress, even if it does not show in your salary or designation. An established professional in this field can earn about Rs.12 to Rs.15 lakh per year. The field is very interesting and there is always scope to learn something new. With the market opening up, there is tremendous scope for a job in this field and also scope to improve. There are a lot of responsibilities and a lot to learn in a short time. It can be intimidating at first, but one can cope with patience and determination. I love my job despite all the chal<<Joshua lenges. Every day offers new Salvador and fresh opportunities and D'souza insights to learn and to grow in the field. This is what makes the field extremely attractive. India is a growing economy and there are several opportunities arising out of this trend. Import-export is a growing field at present. Therefore we see that the field of import-export can offer good career opportunities. I love the work I am doing and my future plans are to gain as much experience as possible, learn as much as possible and later do a specialisation course in some area of importexport. My advice for those who want to take up this profession is – take it up if you are interested in it. Perform with full dedication and invest your enthusiasm and expertise in it. If you're up for a challenge, then this is the place to be and get totally out of your comfort zone.

Key perspectives were shared on leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and inclusive growth. While Meera Sanyal expressed her angst that the Port Trust land is not being returned to the city of Mumbai to build schools, colleges and infrastructure, she also expressed hope that vibrant entrepreneurship will make a difference to India. Jerry Rao took the audience by surprise when he said, “Entrepreneurship is also about being born at the right place at the right time too. If you were born in Russia in the 1920s, even Steve Jobs would not have found any opportunities.” Ashwini Kakkar spoke about the vectors of leadership, deriving from his own journey as a professional

Professors Paddy Padmanabhan and Amitava Chattopadhyay steered the day for the 225 strong attendees that comprised Corporate India alumni and students. Speaking to them were personalities such as R. Gopalakrishnan, Jerry Rao, Meera Sanyal and Ashwini Kakkar. Chaitanya Kalipatnapu of Eruditus, organiser of the INSEAD India Business dialogue, said, “The theme for the dialogues was very contemporary. As India works its way through what is arguably its most challenging period in two decades, one thing is clear: volatility

and uncertainty are increasingly becoming a mainstay of our economic and political fabric. On both fronts, what we need are decisive leaders that embrace the unknown, leaders with the daring and resolve necessary to harness India’s yetunexploited potential.” R. Gopalakrishnan, ED, Tata Sons, started the dialogue by saying, “VUCA is a term coined by the U.S. Army War College in 2002. We all yearn for an SPEC world (SteadyPredictable-Easy-Clear), but face a VUCA world (Volatile-UncertainComplex-Ambiguous). Humans are the only species which arrange seminars on a VUCA world.”

The sixyear-old university based in Guwahati is starting a one of a kind course in July. The course is a post graduate degree program in backpack journalism to prepare citizen journalists. There is an increasing demand on media persons to become a producer, a director, a cameo actor, a scriptwriter, a copywriter, a video/audio editor, a PR campaigner, a cameraman, a journalist and even an advocacy enthusiast. The program will equip one with the thorough knowledge of the entire media spectrum from jour-

nalism to video production, traditional to mobile media, the gamut of social media, citizen journalism, development communication and the world of public relations. The post graduate degree program takes one through hands-on exercises into the glamour of advertising gimmicks, the way a news story gathers steam, and help students try their hands at getting a film from script to screen. Applicants will have an entrance test and interview on July 28 (tentatively) in Guwahati, and selected candidates will start classes on July 31, 2014.

STOP THE DROP MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2014

Keesha Keshkamat, H.R. College

Earth Day will be celebrated on April 22. We ask youngsters to tell us what they will be doing to preserve Mother Earth. We also ask them to talk about what they are doing to conserve and preserve the ecosystem. I don’t believe in Earth Day. Dedicating a day to the Earth makes it seem like very pretentious. Earth Day should be everyday. Not much effort goes into recognizing and conserving resources. A simple act like not wasting electricity or curbing our Diwali celebrations can help a great deal. If we were careful with out resources we wouldn’t need ‘days’ to get people to be environment conscious. —Ananth Sai Reddy

Okay, so I don't contribute on a large scale basis, but rather in my tiniest way. Ever since I could understand environmental studies in school, the 'plant a tree' agenda was drilled into my head. So every year along with my father, once in about two three months we sow seeds so as to see trees sprout up on the otherwise barren lands, back in my home town. Usually we do this either in any of our own family properties or our friends. —Ayushi Mukherji, Student

Though I personally wont be doing much, I think one of the best ways to conserve nature these days is paperless bills. Also, using cloth bags for groceries. We all know the benefits of conserving nature, we have been taught this since school but with the recent spat of events like earthquakes in China, flooding in the US or even rain from Saturns rings shows that we aren't doing enough. To teach people we need to show them and set examples and maybe then they will understand how important it is to protect nature for the future. —Rabiya Varcie Content Writer

nomically use and safely dispose water. It is the least we can do for ourselves and, more importantly, for our future generations. Sustainable water management in the context of our ever-increasing population must be a priority. The Rotaract Club of H.R. College through their initiative called ‘Boond’, with the help of WOTR, has attempted to set the ball rolling by setting up wells in the drought affected regions of Maharashtra. India’s water crisis is manmade. It has less to do with natural endowment disadvantage, than with practice of recycling,

re-use, storage and conservation. Thus, water management must be an urgent national priority of our water stressed economy. India and Germany have the same amount of fresh water available per person per year. Yet, India is perceived as a water crisis country and Germany is not. There’s much to learn from the Europeans in this regard. Every drop is a kiss from heaven, an ultimate blessing to cherish. Let’s hope that the forthcoming government prioritises our water woes. Stop the drip save the drop! Its time to think outside the sink… << Ecole Mondiale World School recently organized ‘Relay for Life: Remember. Celebrate. Fight Back.’ Students of Ecole Mondiale World School from Grade 8 – 12 created teams of 6 – 8 participants & went door to door in their own communities spreading the word on cancer prevention & collected funds on the way. The event was modeled on a 12 hour format, with different activities scheduled throughout the night. They raised over 7.6 lakhs that will be donated to the Indian Cancer Society, an organization that supports cancer patients in India.

SAVE THE EARTH

ater is a privilege, yet most of us take it for granted. How often have we heard numerous rants about ‘saving water’ or ‘preserving water’ and actually paid heed to it? These requests usually fall on deaf ears. Essentially, our earth is made up of twothirds of water but the real deal, fresh water, is greatly limited. When it comes to bold expressions of plain sympathy towards the less privileged, we leap forward. However, a majority of our fortunate society don’t think twice before denying the vast remainder the basic right of access to clean and hygienic water. Sometimes, I too fall into this majority. Every drop of water is priceless and I must learn to put in my heart and soul to conserve it. Water preservation being the need of the hour is a gross understatement. We’re at a precipice of an acute shortage of fresh water. Although efforts are being made at every level to improve this rather sorry state of affairs, it evidently is inadequate and needs to be far more dynamic. It’s high time we wake up and smell the coffee! Just as every drop makes the mighty ocean, each attempt as minuscule as it may be, also counts. It is time we actually take it up as a personal challenge to meticulously harness, carefully conserve, eco-

Former Governor of W. Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi flays section of media, in a veiled attack on BJP and Narendra Modi

EW DELHI: Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Tuesday slammed the 'frenzy' to bring to India's helm the reign of an "ethnic majority, sectarian bigotry and denominational autocracy" in the name of 'strength'. He also criticised sections of media who have become 'trumpeters' of what they see as the coming change, in remarks seen as a veiled attack on BJP and Narendra Modi. "Let us realise that the doldrums feeling is true but is true only as a feeling. In actual fact, beneath the surface stillness, there is a great frenzy astir, a frenzy to bring to India's helm, the reign of an ethnic majority, of a sectarian bigotry, of a denominational autocracy. And all in the name, the very specious name, of 'strength'," Gandhi said delivering the 15th D.P. Kohli Memorial lecture organised to mark the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of the CBI, reports PTI. "The ship of our nationhood, dur-

cratically" and the painted ship will bestir itself into what "I would call Port au Pain". "And here I must say that sections of the media have become trumpeters of what they see as the coming change. We had heard of paid news. But this is free advertising. The high noon of the free press in India makes its own eclipse-by-ink and through the small screen," Gandhi said, while delivering his speech on the topic 'Eclipse at Noon: Shadows over India's Conscience". "Dr Ambedkar had spoken of how this India may well explode and blow up our Constitutional edifice. Why and how that has not happened yet defies my understanding," he said, Quoting Mark Hanna that "there are two things that are important in politics. The first is money, and I can't remember what the second one is", Gandhi said the second thing was 'bullying'. "It is an open secret that certain kinds of services are co-opted near election time by candidates. These have to be called, for want of a better phrase, goonda services. Sonia had appealed to people to defeat "divisive and autocratic" forces which will "destroy" the Indian ethos. She also used the prime TV time to position the Lok Sabha polls as an epoch making battle to protect the "very heart and soul of India". Modi said when Gandhi says her party respects democratic traditions, it is something that cannot be easily digested. BJP leader Arun Jaitley also took potshots at Congress, saying that the party had been

HAGALPUR: Sonia Gandhi's televised appeal to voters on Tuesday led BJP to take a jibe at the Congress that Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha poll campaign was "not working" and coin a new slogan 'Mein Nahin, Mom' (Not me, Mom)' for the rival party. Narendra Modi while taking a swipe at Sonia for her appeal in multiple TV channels on Monday night said it reflected her realisation that her son had not delivered on the

election front. "All of a sudden Sonia Gandhi has come to the fore to take charge of the (election) campaign. She had thought that her son would do something. But when nothing happened. US brokerage Bank of America-Merrill Lynch yesterday said its sees the first rate cut this fiscal only in March next as inflation is expected to fall only by December end on a decline in commodity prices driven by the US Fed tapering. “We expect inflation to peak off if the US Fed tapering contains oil and other commodity prices and reduces imported inflation pressures. This should support our call that the RBI will hold till December end,” BofAML said in a report. Accordingly, BofA-ML sees RBI cutting rates by 50 basis points in March next.

Oil Min To Move Cabinet To Allow RIL To Retain Gas Finds

The Oil Ministry is moving the Cabinet to allow Reliance Industries retain three gas discoveries worth USD 1.45 billion in the eastern offshore KG-D6 block even after expiry of timelines. Upstream regulator Directorate General of Hydrocarbon (DGH) had sought taking away the three finds from RIL as the company had failed to prove their commerciality by not conducting prescribed tests. The Oil Ministry is, however, seeking relaxation of the rules for RIL as it feels rebidding the finds may lead to delay in development of the discoveries.

T

he outcome of India's general election can provide an insight into the political stability, ability, and willingness of the new government to implement reforms for boosting economic growth, said Standard & Poor's Ratings Services in two reports published yesterday. According to the reports, titled "India's Election Is Pivotal For Its Sovereign Creditworthiness" and "The New Government's Reform Policies Will Be Critical To The Credit Profile Of Indian Corporates And Banks," the direction and pace of policy reforms, more than which political party takes control, can affect the ratings on the sovereign. "We believe that the current political landscape in India suggests that no single party could win an outright

majority," said Standard & Poor's sovereign credit analyst Kim Eng Tan. "An important factor is how fragmented the government will be. The more parties involved in the next coalition government, the more likely policies will be incoherent and less supportive of credit attributes." The elections and subsequent policy actions could decide if the sovereign rating remains investment grade (unsolicited ratings: BBB-/Negative/A-3). If we revise our sovereign outlook to stable, those negative outlooks on banks and corporate entities, which reflect the sovereign outlook, could also be revised to stable. Ratings on government-related entities (GREs), companies rated above the sovereign, and banks that are capped at the sovereign rating level or benefitting from uplift due to government support will likely be downgraded, if we

lower the sovereign rating. "We believe a decisive mandate can create an environment for speedy resolution of policy bottlenecks and reforms, and improve private sector investments," said Standard & Poor's corporate credit analyst Abhishek Dangra. "This can lay the foundation for India's return to a stronger and healthier growth phase in the medium term. Conversely, a fragile government could further delay critical a reform as decision-making gets hampered, curbing revival in the investment cycle and derailing growth." India's 16th general elections, where more than 800 million people are eligible to vote, are underway. To claim the right to form a new government, a single political party or a coalition of political parties needs to win 272 out of 543 seats. "In our view, the infrastructure,

power, metals and mining, and petroleum sectors are more exposed to risks from development in government policies affecting corporate performance and banks' asset quality and capitalization needs," Dangra said. The new government's policy di-

rections will set the medium-term growth expectations and long-term structural factors for the economy. In our opinion, structural reforms are essential for India to return to healthier economic growth of above 6% on a sustainable basis and stimulate investments.

Inflation Rises, Raises Concerns Mercedes-Benz Launches SUV At Rs 1.66 Crore By A Business Reporter

“T

ackling food inflation should be the top priority for the incoming government. Unless this critical economic variable is brought under control, we could see a lasting impact on the overall growth scenario”, said Sidharth Birla, President, FICCI. This comment came after the WPI numbers released yesterday indicated that inflation had inched up to a threemonth high in March on a massive spike in food prices, after falling since December. Snapping the declining trend, the inflation rose to a three month high of 5.7 % in March mainly due to spurt in prices of food items like potato, onion and fruits. The inflation in the food items, based on the wholesale price index (WPI), shot up by 9.9 % in March as against 8.12 % in the previous month. The overall WPI inflation, which was on decline since December, had dropped to a nine-month low of 4.68 % in February. As per the data released by the government yesterday, the January inflation number has been revised upward to 5.17 % as against earlier estimate of 5.05 % . In March, price rise in potato was 27.83 % as against 8.36 % in the previous month. Inflation in onion was 1.92 in the last month of 2013-14 fiscal compared to contraction in price of the kitchen staple in the previous month. Overall the inflation in vegetable segment was 8.57 % as compared to about 4 % in February. Fruits were costlier by 16.15 % in March compared to 9.92 % . The government further said the build up of inflation rate in the 2013-14 financial year was 5.70 compared to a build up rate of 5.65 % in the earlier fiscal. The data further revealed that prices of sugar, pulses, cereals, cement and minerals eased in March compared to the previous month. Inflation in the fuel and power category (LPG, petrol and diesel) rose to 11.22 % versus 8.75 % in February. “A sizable jump is seen in the inflation rate for fruits and vegetables.

This coupled with the fact that India could witness some disruption in the progress and spread of monsoon going ahead again highlight the importance of tackling supply side issues on a priority basis”, said Birla adding “Straightening the kinks on the supply side and improving overall agri-productivity are the real solutions to food inflation. The central bank must take a more nuanced stand on its reading of the growth inflation dynamics as we are fast losing ground with regard to performance of the industrial sector. Latest IIP numbers show a decline of 3.7 % in manufacturing in February 2014. For how long we can stay on this course should be a matter of national debate. Along with growth of the industrial economy, we also have on stake sufficient employment generation”. "The revival of inflation, especially of food prices, calls for supply side initiatives to raise agriculture productivity, including augmenting investment in agri infrastructure and improving supply side management, delisting perishables from APMC and encouraging FDI in retail," CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said. Urging for "swift and decisive" policy actions, Banerjee said it would be "unfortunate if the RBI decides to address supply side created inflation through demand constriction by using interest rate as a tool". Assocham President Rana Kapoor was of the view that "The underlying reason for hyper inflation remains that of supply side constraints. The fundamental objective of RBI policy should be to ensure that cost of finance to end user becomes competitive," Incidentally, US brokerage Bank of America-Merrill Lynch (BofAML) says “in near-term, the path of CPI inflation, will be determined by rising El Nino risks.” For March, it expects CPI inflation to rise to 8.4 % as against 8.1 % last month. "Although we fancy ourselves relentless hawks, we have been skeptical of the ability of RBI to control inflation in view of imported inflation from QE," BofA-ML said in a report.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2014

N

EW DELHI: Indian boxers began their World Youth Championships campaign on a brilliant note with three of them advancing to the second round after notching up resounding wins in their opening bouts in Sofia, Bulgaria today. Two men and a woman from India are in the second round of the event which, for the first time, has combined the two competitions. The Championship is doubling up as a qualifying tournament for the Youth Olympics, slated from August 16 to 28 in Nanjing, China. The winners for India today were former junior world Nikhat Zareen (51kg) in the women's competition, while Sathish Kumar (56kg) and Shyam Kakara (49kg) advanced in men's event. Nikhat, who had won a silver medal at the previous edition of

the event, sailed past Turkey's Istik Neriman 3-0 and will now be up against Korea's Sukyeong Lee, who got a bye in the first round. Sathish, on the other hand, out-punched Hungary's Nandor Csoka 3-0 in his campaignopener. He will face Cuba's Javier Ibanez in his next bout. Late last night, Shyam Kakara (49kg) pummelled UAE's Abdulla Almulla in his opening bout. Kakara won the bout via Technical Knock Out (TKO) within the first two rounds. Technical knockout was a result of Almulla being declared unfit to continue the bout after coming in for severe thrashing from the Indian pugilist. Kakara will now be up against Sri Lanka's Ishanka Withrana, who got a first-round bye. Earlier, Asian silver-medallists Gaurav Solanki (52kg) and Neel

Kamal Singh (75kg) were among the fours Indians who were handed first-round byes in the tournament, which would double up as a qualifying event for the Youth Olympics. Manjeet (69kg) and Manju Bombariya (75kg) are the other Indians to get a bye in the tournament. The youngsters, all in the age bracket of 17 and 18, will have to reach at least the semi-finals of the world event to make the cut for the Youth Olympics. The Indians are competing under the International Boxing Association (AIBA) flag due to the termination of the Indian Boxing Federation following its failure to comply with the world body's directives on holding elections. India had won a couple of silver medals and a bronze in the previous edition in Yerevan, Armenia.

Flintoff eyes T20 Shuttlers Sourabh, Arvind progress in New Zealand Open N return with St Annes club

L

ONDON: Four years after retiring from international cricket, former England skipper Andrew Flintoff is eyeing a T20 return with former club St Annes. The 36-year-old allrounder played for the Northern League side - St Annes - as a junior before joining Lancashire. The BBC reported that the 6' 4" athlete communicated his interest to the Fylde club through his grandfather, who is actively involved with the club activities. Doping ban reversed for Olympic champion K

UALA LUMPUR: the Badminton World Federation has reversed a one-year ban handed to Olympic gold medalist Lee Yon-dae for failing to comply with doping requirements. Lee and fellow South Korean player Kim Ki-jung are eligible to resume competition immediately after the Malaysia-based BWF found that the "whereabouts failures" were due to the management of the program by the national badminton federation. Neither player failed a doping test, but had been required to

provide whereabouts information for the BWF to conduct outof-competition testing. Lee and Kim accumulated three "whereabouts failures" in 2013 and received the ban in January, despite a disciplinary panel finding that there were extenuating circumstances because the Badminton Korea Association failed to "make diligent efforts to keep the BWF informed about the players' whereabouts." The BWF announced it had reversed the ban "based on significant new evidence" presented in

a subsequent disciplinary process against the BKA. The disciplinary "panel determined all strikes for missed tests and filing failures against both the players in 2013 are cancelled and no violation was therefore committed." the BWF statement said. The BKA was fined USD 41,170 for failing in its duty of care for Kim and Lee through administrative failures in the management of the whereabouts system which contributed to the three strikes against them.

CBI sets up special unit to probe sports fraud N

EW DELHI:To check 'fixing' in sports, CBI has set up a dedicated 'Sport Integrity Unit' to look into cases of fraud, including betting in any sporting event. ternationale de Football Association (FIFA) before setting up the unit. Sinha said CBI will also be actively engaging with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports so that a law to deal with corruption in sports is put in place at the earliest. "This (law) would make India one of the very few nations in the world to have a dedicated unit set up as a part of its federal investigative agency to investigate sports fraud," he said, addressing the 15th D P Kohli Memorial Lecture organised by CBI. CBI had held discussions with "In the years to come we shall officials of International Cricket further strengthen the unit and Council (ICC) and Federation In- hope to make a substantial con-

tribution in the fight against malpractices in sports. We look forward to support and cooperation from all stakeholders in making this initiative of CBI a success," the agency Director said. Addressing the gathering, Sinha said it has always been the endeavour of CBI to understand the new areas of crime and reinvent itself to meet the emerging challenges. "In the last six months, we have been engaged in understanding the dynamics of corruption in sports and held discussions with various national and international stakeholders as also the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports," he said.

India full of brilliant fielders now: Rhodes Mitchell Johnson mulls quitting T20, ODIs D

UBAI: There was a time when he felt that Indians were just not comfortable diving to stop a ball but South Africa's yesteryears' fielderpar-excellence, Jonty Rhodes, says the current Team India is full off "brilliant" fielders who have taken their standard to a new level. Rhodes, who is the fielding coach of reigning IPL champions Mumbai Indians, said his opinion of Indian fielders not being up to it has changed."You see the current Indian team and it is full of brilliant fielders, not afraid to dive around. The Sri Lankans have always been agile fielders but in recent years the Indians and Pakistanis have taken their standard of fielding to a new level," Rhodes told the IPL's official website ahead of the seventh edition of the event starting tomorrow. “Fielding is no more just the monopoly of countries

like Australia or South Africa. It has become an integral part of most cricket teams. "Also in IPL, if you see some of the greatest catches taken, it will not feature only the international players. A number of young Indian domestic players have pulled off stunners, and that, excites me," added the South African, who became a sensation for his sheer agility on

the field during his playing days. Rhodes said "Virat, for instance, catches the ball with reversed cup (finger pointing skywards). Now, he has been exposed to international cricketers from a young age and that it is possible he has picked that technique up," Rhodes explained. "I personally feel that technique helps you get under the ball well and move your feet more briskly. However, there is no one way – Ravindra Jadeja is a brilliant fielder and he catches the ball with straight cupped hands," he said. "Like it does in batting and bowling, confidence plays a big part in fielding. For instance, Yuvraj Singh is one of India's greatest fielders but in the recent World Twenty20, he struggled to take catches. That's because he was out of form with the bat and hence low on confidence.

N

EW DELHI: Keeping the 2015 Ashes in mind, Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson is mulling over his limited-overs future to prolong his Test journey. Johnson, who missed the recently concluded World T20 in Bangladesh due to a toe injury, is fit and raring to go in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab but has hinted at reconsidering his T20 future with the Kangaroos. Johnson, 32, has ambitions of spearheading Australia's pace attack in the 2015 World Cup Down Under but the Ashes battle in the same year is on top priority. "I think I've got to be a lot smarter now. Twenty20, I will quite happily say, is not my favourite format - I would rather play Test cricket," Johnson told cricket.Com.Au. "But my main goal now is

to get to that 2015 Ashes series in England, so I'll be doing everything I can to reach that goal." Johnson proved to be Australia's trump card as they reclaimed the Ashes at home with a 5-0 thrashing of England. He finished as the leading wicket-taker with 37

wickets and his lethal spells continued in South Africa, where he yet again finished on top of the wicket charts with 22 scalps, guiding Australia to a 2-1 series win. Australia's next Test series will be against Pakistan in the UAE in October, before they host India for four Tests.

IPL 7 SET TO ROLL WITH A GULF OF DIFFERENCE SPORTS

A

BU DHABI: Fighting for credibility after being left devastated by a spot-fixing scandal, the glamorous but controversial Indian Premier League will roll out its seventh edition here from tomorrow with the promise of putting cricket first while keeping the drama and glitz to a bare minimum. Defending champions Mumbai Indians, captained by Rohit Sharma, will square off against 2012 winners Kolkata Knight Riders, led by veteran opener Gautam Gambhir, in the event-opener at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here. The UAE is hosting the high-profile T20 event's first leg from April 16 to 30 owing to a clash of dates with the Indian general elections and security concerns emanating from that. The tournament will return to India on May 2 after being assured of security in states where voting would be over by that time. The razzmatazz, which has made IPL a magnet for both the fans and the cricketers world over, is not expected to just vanish because of the unsavoury scandal but the organisers have promised to tone down the glamour bit. To start with, there would not be any opening ceremony this year, replaced by a gala dinner for the teams where Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise, is one among the stars who is expected to perform. But when the curtains go up on perhaps the most popular domestic cricket tournament in the world,

Mumbai Indians icon Sachin Tendulkar, Corey Anderson, Lasith Malinga, Dale Steyn and (below) Suresh Raina. focus will also be on the off-field matters in the backdrop of the ongoing Supreme Court monitored investigation into the betting scandal in which some big names of the league have been implicated. For one, BCCI President N Srinivasan and Chennai Super Kings coowner N Srinivasan has been forced to step aside and the event's COO Sundar Raman is also under the scanner. Its reputation might have taken a beating but what is likely to remain unchanged is the fans' adulation for the IPL. Even though UAE is foreign land, finding a fan-base for the tournament has not been much of an issue

due to the huge expat population which has shown its support to the event by buying off tickets within a few days of them going on sale. But questions have been raised about the choice of UAE as a venue to host the event given its history of being a hot-bed of match-fixers. The IPL organisers have tried to justify it by saying that the decision was based purely on logistical grounds. The negative buzz at the start of the tournament notwithstanding, cricket will take centrestage when the matches start and focus would be on the multi-million dollar buys who would be aiming to justify their fat pay cheques. Among them would be Indian allrounder Yuvraj Singh, the costliest

buy of this year's auction who coped a massive fan backlash after his flop show in the recent World T20 final. Bought for Rs 14 crore by the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Yuvraj would be under pressure to prove his worth in the backdrop of the World T20 debacle. Also, England swashbuckler Kevin Pietersen, bought for Rs nine crore by the Delhi Daredevils, would be aiming for a fresh start after his national career was abruptly cut short when the ECB decided to dump him for issues other then just cricket. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik would also be watched closely after Delhi splurged an amount of more than Rs 12 crore to hire his services.

Tendulkar will be sick of me by end of IPL-7: Hussey M

UMBAI: Sachin Tendulkar will be "sick of me" by the end of IPL-7 says Michael Hussey, who plans to talk about the game and life after international retirement with the iconic cricketer during his stint with Mumbai Indians over the next month and a half. "I hope so. I am really looking forward to spending time with him and talking about life and cricket. He will probably be sick of me by the end of the IPL," Hussey said when asked if he will be exchanging thoughts with the recently-retired Tendulkar. The 40-year-old Tendulkar, who was part of MI's triumphant campaign in the last edition, has been appointed the side's mentor ahead of the upcoming extravaganza starting tomorrow in Abu Dhabi. Hussey, who had been part of

many a remarkable win with the Chennai Super Kings, will don the blue jersey this time around. "It will be different but I am excited by the challenge of joining a team that I have admired and respected over the six years," Hussey was quoted as saying by IPL's official website. The retired Australian great is excited at the prospect of playing at the Wankhede Stadium, which he feels has the "best atmosphere I have ever experienced". Asked about the rivalry between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings and if it will take a bit of work to adjust, he said, "I don't think so. I have had some great battles with Mumbai Indians over the years and look forward to many great battles with CSK over the next few years."

EW DELHI: Spinners may have a "major role" to play in the Indian Premier League with the first leg of tournament staged in the UAE expected to have "typical subcontinent" wickets, according to cricketer-turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar. "Spinners may have a major role to play. It will be a typical sub-continent wicket. I was there in the under-19 World Cup and saw that the pitch had bit of a bounce. So one has to wait and see how the surfaces turn out. As Sharjah might be different from Dubai and Abu Dhabi will have a different pitch," Sanjay told PTI in an interview today. The cash-rich league did travel

to South Africa in 2009 and now UAE will host the matches between April 16 and 30. Manjrekar also believes that IPL will always be high on the popularity chart. "IPL is a product that is quite unique. It is a tournament that has witnessed all challenges. When it went to South Africa, it was a big hit. And UAE is closer to home, so I don't see this as a major issue. The viewers will certainly embrace IPL as they have always done against all odds," said the cricket expert. The teams this time have left nothing to chance. If KKR have roped in renowned adventurer and explorer Mike Horn then Rajasthan Royals have mental condition expert Paddy Upton as their head coach. However, according to Manjrekar cricket is a captain's

sport and the support staff is only there to help. "Coaches and support staff do play a role in T20 cricket but only marginally. Because there is a lot of discussion in T20 cricket, inputs come from the outside. But cricket is a sport where captains call the shots and the support staff have a limited influence," said Manjrekar. Many Team India discards are also keen to make IPL their comeback vehicle and Manjrekar finds this route absolutely beneficial for many such players. "Yes, IPL is a comeback vehicle. Because of the high-profile nature people who are looking to make a comeback to get noticed if they perform. What the tournament does is that it tells the selectors that the guy is in a good nick.

Let’s try laundry! Dhoni on how to keep IPL clean D

UBAI: His deafening silence on the IPL spot-fixing scandal infuriated many but an unruffled Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni preferred to look at the lighter side of the controversy by suggesting that perhaps a laundry service could be tried to keep the event clean! "We will try the laundry, that's good, will keep us clean," Dhoni, who is the captain of the Chennai Super Kings -- the team at the centre of the furore, was quoted as say- the UAE yesterday for the first leg of ing by 'ESPNCricinfo'. the seventh IPL which has been The stumper-batsman arrived in shifted here in part owing to a clash

of dates with the ongoing general elections in India. Dhoni, who was accused of trying to shield betting accused and CSK's former Team Principal Gurunath Meiyappan during his deposition in front of the Justice Mudgal Committee, has so far avoided questions on the IPL. He was criticised for remaining silent on the matter despite the fact that the franchise captained by him was at the centre of the row. He later went on to sue a news channel for Rs 100 crore for falsely insinuating that he could be involved in betting.
