Bad-mouthing PM in Independence Day address fails to impress top leaders of Shiv Sena and BJP

By Suyash Padate

T

he Shiv Sena yesterday took a direct swipe at Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi his blistering attack on the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Independence Day, saying that there are 364 days in the year to criticize the Prime Minister. Modi came down heavily on Dr Singh in his speech at Bhuj. He said that the Prime Minister of India is weak and feeble and the nation is restless for change. Reacting to these comments, senior BJP leader L K Advani expressed his displeasure and snubbed Modi, saying this was not the day to criticize one another.

“Today is Independence Day and we should not take on each other. India has unlimited potential for the future,” the veteran leader interjected. After Advani, BJP’s alliance partner, Shiv Sena, also took a dig at Modi, with leader Sanjay Raut saying, “We have

the entire year ahead of us to comment on the Prime Minister of our country. Today we must listen to him and leave the criticism for some other day.” It may be recalled that a few days ago, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had refused to affirm Narendra Modi as a potentially credible leader of the country, indicating that his party may have reservations over projecting the head of the BJP’s election campaign as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the opposition coalition. After yesterday’s criticism, it seems that the Sena has not changed its stance over Modi’s leadership.

where a screen was put up, reports PTI. In the e-court room, Justice Nitin Jamdar had a computer on his table instead of files. Whatever pages he went through were also visible on a big screen placed in the same court for the benefit of litigants. The Bombay High Court

has already started accepting court fees as electronic payments and the initiative has received a good response. In the e-court, litigants have been asked to file soft copies on a pen drive or a compact disc. The date of the presentation of the pen drive or CD shall be deemed to be the

date of filing of the electronic petition. However, as a precautionary measure, petitioners have also been asked to file a hard copy. The e-court is a central government initiative to computerise district and sub-

ordinate courts as well as upgrade the infrastructure of the Supreme Court and high courts. Under the project, 2,249 courts in 969 court complexes are expected to be computerised by March 31, 2014.

Housemaid turns chain-snatcher

Runs off with employer’s gold chain on very first day at work

By Zuber Ansari

T

he DN Nagar police have registered an FIR against a 35 year-old woman who allegedly snatched her employer’s chain, worth over Rs.40,000, on her first day as a housemaid in the victim house. The incident took place near Ayesha Palace in Dawood Baugh locality in Andheri (W) on Wednesday afternoon. Leela Shetty, who is the complainant in the case, told the police that she was looking out a maidservant, and someone she knew had sent a woman who introduced her-

self as a Bela. On Wednesday, the very first day at work, after doing some of the chores, Bela told Shetty that she was tired and wanted to go home. Feeling concerned, Shetty accompanied Bela down the stairs, and that was when Bela suddenly snatched her chain and fled away from the scene. Shetty told the police that the woman was very soft-spoken and did not look capable of committing this kind of crime. Mrs Shetty said, “She came at about 10 am and worked well for around two hours, but later started saying she was not feeling well and

wanted to go home. So I got down from my building along with her, and she was even chatting with me. But in just two minutes, she snatched my chain and ran away.” Talking to the ADC, Senior Police Inspector R.K. Chavan from DN Nagar police station, said, “The accused Bela was sent by some other maid who knew her very well. We are clueless at the moment, but have got some leads and she may be caught within two days. We have always told people not to employ maidservants without proper police verification, but they are ignoring this advice.”

Indian government’s missed chance

he Indian government could have saved itself embarrassment by pressing charges of terrorism against Mirchi, believe legal experts. There was never any concrete case against Mirchi, with regard to extradition treaty, and charges of terrorism in his dossier would have actually made the extradition process easier for the government. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had tried to get Mirchi extradited to India in the Mumbai blasts case, but remained unsuccessful despite an intervention by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Mirchi, who was declared as an international drugbaron, was the right hand man of Dawood, and was handling the entire drug smuggling syndicate. The money earned from the drug smuggling was used for funding terrorist organizations to strike terror in India, said sources in the intelligence. In the past, the Indian government had twice faced embarrassment for not being able to extradite Mirchi to India, as the plea was rejected by the UK authorities. In the year 1995 and last year, the UK authorities had turned down India’s request for extraditing Mirchi. The reason, informed a highly placed source in Mumbai’s crime branch, was lack of strong and serious cases against Mirchi, which did not fit in with the terms and conditions of the extradition treaty between India and UK. Meanwhile, all the cases against Mirchi would be closed, said police adding that concerned agencies who have attached his properties in India would file their reply in court, as per appropriate legal procedure.

Prostitution racket busted in Bhayandar Absconding owner of ‘notorious’ lodge happens to be brother of Shiv Sena corporator By Suresh Golani

S

leuths of the AntiHuman Trafficking Wing (AHTW) of the Thane (rural) police claim to have unearthed a prostitution network being run from a lodge that falls under the jurisdiction of the Navghar police station in Bhayandar (East). According to the police, following specific information provided by members of NGO-Rehab, about prostitution activities being run from a bar-cum-lodge in the BP Road area of Bhayandar

(East), a police team led by Assistant Police Inspector Atul Aher, swooped down on Sai Sagar Lodge at about 6.30 pm on Wednesday. While eight women, including a 17-year-old minor girl, were rescued, the police team arrested four employees of the lodge who doubled up as pimps, including the cashier Shankar Das (52) and three room-boys identified as Umesh Yadav (23), Kapil Ravidas (29) and Prithvi Gaud (19). “Investigations revealed that the rescued women are natives of various villages in North 24-Parganas district in West Bengal and had been forced into prostitution,” said Aher. Apart from registering an offence under sections 366(a), 370, 372 and 34 of the IPC, the police have also invoked sections 3, 4, 5, 6(2a) and 7 of the stringent Prevention of Immoral Traf-

ficking Act (PITA), 1956, against the arrested accused, the lodge owner Anil Patil and manager Gunesh Shetty (both are still at large), police said. While the rescued women have been sent to a Rehabilitation Centre in Boisar, all the arrested accused have been remanded to the custody of the Navghar police. It should be noted that Sai Sagar Lodge, which also houses a ladies bar in its premises, is notorious for anti-social activities. In the past seven months, the AHTW has managed to rescue 145 victimized women, including 48 minors, from the clutches of pimps who were found operating prostitution rackets in the rural pockets of Thane district. The police team has also arrested 74 people for their involvement in operating flesh trade rackets.

Kids born in rape cases can’t be ‘property’ in crime: HC I

n a significant order, the Bombay High Court has observed that children, born to minor unwed mothers in rape cases, cannot be treated as ‘property’ in the crime while considering requests from Child Welfare Committees to declare such children free for adoption. Accordingly, Justices R.M. Borde and R.V. Ghuge quashed orders of a Child Welfare Committee which asked an adoption agency to seek NOC from court and permission from police to allow adoption of children born to unwed mothers who had been raped. The High Court was hearing two separate petitions filed by Snehalaya Snehankur Adoption Centre which had applied to the Child Welfare Committee to give a declaration that such children, born to unwed mothers, were free for adoption. Assistant government pleader told the court that the Child Welfare Committee had asked police to inform whether they would need the presence of children since they are born out of sexual violence, in respect of which act, an offence has been registered with the police. Besides, it was also awaiting a report from a probation officer. The judges said, “Merely because children are born

out of sexual violence to minor unwed mothers, it does not mandate calling of report from police as to whether they would need the children for investigation or for calling upon the adoption agency to produce a ‘no objection certificate’ from the competent court dealing with trial of offence.” “It must be understood that the police are concerned with the investigation of crime which is in the nature of sexual violence meted to a

minor girl. Also, the court in a trial is concerned with the offence of sexual violence alleged against the accused,” the judges said recently. Considering the applications, tendered by adoption agency seeking a declaration from the committee that the children are free for adoption, those children, who are born to unwed minor mother out of sexual violence, cannot be treated as “property” involved in the crime,” the bench said.

Limit on investing in overseas property to dampen sentiment T

he Reserve Bank of India’s curbs on Indians investing in international real estate under the liberalised remittance scheme will dampen investor sentiment, property consultancy firm Jones Lang LaSalle said. The RBI, seeking to support the battered rupee, yesterday announced measures to reduce foreign exchange outflows. The steps included disallowing the use of remittances by resident Indians to buy property overseas. “The new restrictions have been introduced in an effort to stabilise the rupee. This move

will have medium to longterm implications,” JLL Chief Executive Officer Om Ahuja told PTI. He said, individuals who were planning to buy international real estate at attractive valuations and planning for their kids’ education and housing abroad will now see such plans challenged. “Currently, the variety of options available on the international property market offer very attractive rental yield. This, now restricted, is going to make planning difficult. The new restrictions will put a dampener on the sentiment of Indian investors,” he added.

ect, the twin-city is the recipient of 218 MLD of water along with the Vasai-Virar civic body (185 MLD). The MMRDA has chalked out an elaborate plan to commission the Rs.933.88 crore water supply project on a joint basis for both the civic bodies. “Although the MMRDA will execute the work of lifting water and channelizing it to the doorstep of the twin-city, the city’s internal water distribution system needs to be overhauled. The IIT- evaluated DPR is now under final process,” confirmed municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani, who added that though it is a fact that the Surya Project will take a couple of years for completion, efforts were on to tap other sources so as to augment supply, providing immediate relief to residents by reducing the frequency to 24 hours. It should be noted that as against the requirement of 150 MLD, the Mira Bhayandar area, which sprawls across 79.4 sq km, and having a populace of more than 8.14 lakh, currently receives only 116 MLD.

The MBMC, which intends to overhaul the existing water distribution system of the twin-city, prepared a Rs.449 crore draft-DPR in this context, and sent the blueprint for appraisal to engineers at the IIT, Powai which, after technical analysis and physical feasibility surveys, gave its nod after making some minor alterations and reducing the original estimation from Rs. 449 to Rs. 427 crore. The MBMC forwarded the DPR to the planning authority -Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), which has now tabled the proposal before Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) authorities. EW DELHI: The much-delayed acquisition of Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier and issues over pricing of the under-development fifth generation fighter aircraft project are expected to be discussed during Defence Secretary Radha Krishna Mathur's visit to Moscow next month. Mathur will be leading a high-level tri-services team comprising Lt Gen-rank officers from the three Services and the status of ongoing projects such as Gorshkov and FGFA are expected to come up for discussion, sources told PTI. In the delegation-level

talks scheduled to be held on September 8, the two sides are also expected to discuss the futuristic joint development projects for the armed forces, they said. The talks were earlier scheduled to be held on August 19 but in view of the ongoing Parliament session they have been postponed to September 8-9. However, it is not yet finalised whether the Indian side will raise the issue of mishap on its Kilo Class submarine INS Sindhurakshak as it is likely to depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation. The submarine had come back from Russia a few

2014. It is learnt that the two sides are also planning to discuss the upgrade of one more

Kilo Class submarine INS Sindhushastra, the last of the 10 submarines procured by India from Russia.

Navy sources said India is not likely to seek the help of the Russian equipment manufacturers for their investigations as it has been operating the Kilos for over two decades and has the required expertise to find out the reasons behind the blast that led to the sinking of the ship. India had procured ten Kilo class vessels from Russia in early 1980s and the deliveries were made in 14 years from 1986 to 2000. The visit by the Defence Secretary to Russia was scheduled in June but had to be postponed as Mathur had just taken over his new responsibility at that time.

Extra vigil to check 14 Maoists surrender gold smuggling after G before RR Patil import duty hike N

EW DELHI: Fearing spurt in attempts to smuggle gold into the country, financial intelligence agencies and customs department are keeping extra vigil and minutely scanning suspected passengers and

commercial consignments. Officials of the Directorate General of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), mandated to check smuggling and evasion of customs duty, are coordinating with other agencies' staff posted at major transit

points, including airports and international borders, to check gold smuggling and have alerted their field formations to remain more vigilant. Sources said the customs department is scanning cre-

dentials of suspected cargo coming from Gulf countries and other nations like Malaysia to foil any bid to smuggle precious metal inside the country. Officers of the Customs Overseas Intelligence Net-

work posted abroad have also been asked to keep a hawk eye on any suspected consignment originating from there, they said. "There have been some frequent incidents of gold smuggling this year. All officials posted at airports, cargo stations and land borders are keeping extra vigil to check any such incidents," a DRI official said. Officials said the recent hike of 10 per cent in customs duty for gold by Finance Ministry may see increased attempts of smuggling of the yellow metal. The duty on gold and platinum was raised from 8 per cent to 10 per cent, while the levy on silver was hiked by 4 per cent this week, according to a Finance Ministry notification. Ten gram gold is being sold at about Rs 29,825 in Delhi's bullion market. Owing to huge domestic demands, the import of gold had gone up by a huge 87 per cent from 205 tonnes in April-July 2012 to 383 tonnes during the corresponding period this year. In value terms, the increase was 68 per cent from Rs 56,488 crore to Rs 95,092 crore.

ADCHIROLI: 14 Maoists surrendered before Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil yesterday. The surrendered Maoists belong to remote and tribal villages in Gadchiroli district and adjoining Chhattisgarh. Of the 14 surrendered Maoists, eight are men and six are women in aged between 16 years to 40 years. They include two Maoist cou-

ples who had worked in different platoons. The surrendered Maoists will be be given financial assistance by the government under its surrender policy, the police said. The surrender ceremony took place immediately after the flag-hoisting programme in front of the collectorate. The Maoists worked with platoons like Tippagad dalam, Bhamragad platoon,

Gatta platoon, Aheri platoon, militia platoon, company number four and company number 10 of the Gadchiroli district. Some of the Maoists had worked in Chhattisgarhbased platoons like Kottur platoon, South Bastar Regional Company Number 2, Bijapur Company number 2 and Bastar Manpur Division Platoon number 2. PTI

H

OW has the English media taken, by and large, to the acceptance of statehood to Telangana? Hindustan Times (July 31) noted that “grasping the nettle is not something that comes easily to coalition governments, but the UPA government has decided though it may be, it will set the ball rolling in the creation of Telangana State. The very fact that the demand has been there for the last 60 years shows how difficult the decision must have been,” said the paper, adding: “The Centre must also now contend with similar demands from other states (and) having conceded on Telangana, the Centre has no choice but to HE government and private hospitals ensure a fair hearing for similar demands are reporting steadily increasing from other states.” The Telegraph (July 30) looked at the issue water-borne diseases in the city. There must be thousands of people who do not through the demands for a separate statego to hospitals for treatment or consult hood consisting of three sub-divisions of Dartheir family doctors. Hence, the figures jeeling and asserted that “the challenge in needs to be handled cautiously” presented by the BMC with regard to Darjeeling since “false steps in a border region can be various victims of water-borne diseases costly for the country.”

Spurt in water-borne diseases

T

are incorrect. The BMC appears to have decided it cannot do anything about it. These are monsoon diseases which are unavoidable. That is the smug view of the health officials. It is evident that they sit around and do nothing about it. The main reason for the spurt in water-borne diseases is that people do not get clean potable water. Tests of several samples of water have shown that one out of seven samples is contaminated. This means in Mumbai, thousands of people drink contaminated water supplied by the BMC. Some of the water-borne diseases are gastroenteritis, typhoid and cholera. All these are highly infectious. A cholera epidemic can pose a big damage to the city. Even a simple case of cholera can be a threat in an overcrowded city with people living in hundreds of dirty slums. Not all ‘homes’ in slums have taps. People living in these shanties get water through ingenious means. It is evident that quite a few of them get one or the other waterborne diseases. Evidently, there is no preventive measures for ensuring that water people drink in the city is not contaminated. The BMC should find out how water gets contaminated and decide to incur the require expenditure: The callous approach of the BMC in this regard is most disturbing.

but by appeal to a shared culture, common language, public institutions forged following the unification of this region into a distinct state from 1956, and on grounds of strategic, economic and corporate interests”. Admittedly, the paper went on to say, “the present Andhra Pradesh is a compact cultural region with much that is common, but this commonness has not succeeded in forging a political unity based on a shared sense of inclusion and fairness”. The view expressed in DNA was by a teacher of Political Aciende at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Valerian Rodrigues. As he sees it, “there are three compelling forces” in operation. First, Telangana is a region unlike other regions in India, sustaining a distinctive cultural terrain made of deep diversities.

Linguistic principle The Asian Age (July 31) pointed out that the view taken on Telangana will not apply to areas like Gorkhaland, Bodoland or Vidarbha, only “it is evident however that the Congress has not arrived at a new long-term formula for states reorganisation, replacing the linguistic principle.” Nor, added the paper “is it likely that a second States Reorganisation Commission will be set up now.” The Times of India (August 3) decided to treat the entire matter satirically giving the impression that the entire concept is stupid. At the rate we are going, said the paper, “we will soon give the United Nations competition with a United States of India.” Each of them could be given a veto power, similar to Permanent Members of the Security Council.” However one looks at the issue, the paper added, “at least we can revenge ourselves on the Security Council declining our Permanent Membership request by replicating the United Nations within India itself.” Satirism is all very well and the people of Andhra Pradesh have not shown themselves to be wise by letting things be as they are, but The Times of India did not do itself any good by trying to be clever. DNA (July 31) said that those who defend a unified Andhra defend themselves not on grounds of democracy, or support from below

CMs, MLAs, limousines and bungalows will make it more merrier for beneficiaries and more the messier for people.” Said George: “What the country needs is a unified policy in handling regional demands with a national perspective. If, on the contrary, selfishness persists, the ultimate victor will be Winston Churchill who predicted that India would disintegrate into small nations.” And that is a point worth remembering. There were others writing in the same paper… Shankar Aiyar, a well-known author said that what has happened is not about the creation of Telangana but it is about “debating what drives growth and good governance.” As Aiyar argued, smaller-size states promise access to the citizens and easier operations, but good government also needs enlightened leadership. The cry for smaller states be said, is less about representation and more about real aspirations. Size could matter, big could be bold and beautiful too, said Aiyar, adding: “So let’s forget formulaic solutions and worry about formats”.

Telangana statehood MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath The second reason, as Rodrigues saw it “is the specific relation of this region to modes of militancy such as the Great Telangana Movement (1946-51) and later to Maoism that argued for a revolutionary transformation through protracted struggle with the peasantry as its social base support.” Finally, according to Rodrigues, “it is the movement for a separate Telangana state that took the wind out of the sail of revolutionary zeal. As he argued: “If there is one issue that has drawn the youth away from Maoism in the region, it has been the agitation for a separate Telangana statehood that has thrown up a different imagination of establishing a just order.” Not every commentator thinks along these lines. Writing in The New Indian Express (August 4) T.J.S. George said that “we can do with structured new states, but not an ad hoc partition of India.” Said he: “If cynicism of the present ruling class holds, we may soon become a 35 or 40 state country that many more

Again, writing in the same paper, G.S. Vasu said the Congress often does the right thing “for the wrong reasons” and so was the decision to grant statehood to Telangana. As he noted it, “given the time it took for the Indian government to concede the demand (for Telangana statehood), it reflects the disconnect with which our political class functions – refusing to acknowledge peoples’ aspirations until they also serve their political interests. Added Vasu: “It is not just formation of two states: it is a political revolution in the making.” Writing in The Times of India (August 4) another well-known political columnist M.J. Akbar said that a revolution does not pause once begun, even during its phases of retreat in the course of a long struggle.” And he warned: “For every Telangana that emerges, a dozen seeds are being fertilised in the womb of time.” All that one can now state is that what has happened has happened and things cannot be changed once again. But what is clear is that the country and its wider political leadership must give deep thought to the entire issue of reorganisation of states that will stand the test of time for decades and centuries to come. The acceptance of Telangana should serve as a warning.

Jiddu Krishnamurti on the Atman “I

T is there an area in the human brain, or in the very nature and structure of a human being, not merely in the outer world of his activities but inwardly, deep in the vast quiet recesses of his own brain, something that is not the outcome of memory, not the movement of a continuity?"… "There is most certainly, definitely, an area where the past doesn’t cast a shadow, where time, the past or the future or the present has no meaning."… "You can’t ascend through knowledge; there must be an end to knowledge for the new to be. New is a word for something which has never been before. And that area cannot be understood or grasped by words or symbols; it is beyond all remembrances." Most of the avid readers and students are quite familiar with his profound teachings that are woven throughout his many books,

talks and recordings. It has also been my experience, when speaking to some of his most ardent fans, that over time they don’t continue to read his works regularly as they don’t find much more in the way of new teachings. The quote above, though might be something a little different. It is one that

MATTER & SPIRIT offers a glimpse into his thoughts about that aspect of human nature which is beyond everything. Although it may be a stretch to indicate that he is commenting on the Hindu concept of the ‘Atman’ or soul, it does reverberate with the same description that is often used to describe the Atman. Part of which describes the Atman as that aspect of Human Nature that is beyond time, space and self (ego), is untouched by anything

worldly and cannot be grasped by thoughts. Additionally, his more traditional comment regarding the need for the end of knowledge is of course, etymologically speaking, the definition of Vedanta (Veda – knowledge; Anta – End). So it is just to clarify that the objective here is not to try to equate, compare or debate Krishnamurti’s teaching with Hinduism; but just trying to reveal, a different light, what will hopefully be some aspects of his teachings that we find to be more uncommon. So the above insights essentially point to a part of our being which cannot be realized through knowledge. This aspect becomes visible to us when the activity of memory (thought) ceases to grab our attention and pull us outwards. It is there when there is nothing.

New RBI chief has a bumpy task ahead KUDOS to the new RBI Guv, Raghuram Rajan, one of the youngest. At his age most government officers would be joint secretaries. Mother India splitting up AS reported, it is indeed very shocking, disgusting and sickening to note that one after the other, states are disintegrating one after the other or rather, nation is breaking and disintegrating. Now it is Telangana after which there will be Bodoland, Gorkhaland and Vidharba to follow. Our predecessors never visualised or dreamt that after Independence the condition will be like today. Nitesh-Gujarati row YOUTH leader Nitesh Rane seems to be totally unaware of the historic realities while talking about Gujaratis in Mumbai: 1. The Gujjus in Mumbai are residents of the city for more than three centuries. They have no connection with the State of Gujarat. They have equally contributed to the development of the metropolis like Maharashtrians, Parsis, Christians and Muslims, 2. The undivided Bombay State (1947 to 1960) and the State of Gujarat till 2000 were under the uninterrupted rule of the Congress for more than five decades. Had the corrupt Congress rulers given proper attention to the balanced growth of the State, BJP would never have taken roots in Gujarat, 3. IT is very shocking that more than 1,098 trees were removed for a single project of Sion-Panvel expressway; 902 trees were removed by MSRDC to expand Sion-Panvel expressway. They transplant 535 trees and replant 367. There is a proposal to replant the same number of trees that will be cut. Whether the Govt. agencies will actually implement this –who knows ? It is the citizen of Navi Mumbai to protect green cover which is under increasing attack from development and infrastructure projects nowadays. In the present situation it is necessary to help to measure the citys precious green cover. New trees will be planted with the help of civic authorities where the green cover has depleted. Authorities should understand the present environment and pollution situation and planted as much as trees to recover the loss of green cover due to the project.

ENGLAND test team is showing its professional approach in the best way possible these days. Having won a away series in India after being one down in the series was a remarkable effort. This we saw before their superhuman effort in overwhelming Team India at home by whopping 4-0 margin. Thus, England’s Test match and series victories normally involve the steady strangulation of their opposition’s hopes—it’s slow, painful and methodical. There was something strangely appropriate therefore about the PA announcement that echoed around the almost empty Old Trafford ground, that confirmed the third Ashes Test had been abandoned and England had retained the precious urn. England fans will of course take Ashes retention however it comes, but it was an undeniably anti-climactic in its denouement. With their goal of retaining the Ashes achieved, Andy Flower and his men should now begin to look more broadly to the future.

Gandhiji and his cricket stint WHATEVER said and done by Gandhiji really helped India to attain Independence from the British rule finally. From 1930— The Dandi March to the 1942 Quit India Movement, Gandhiji was all the way dictating terms to the English. However, he was member of the MCC side touring India. Mahatma Gandhi, when requested for an autograph “played with a straight bat”, quite forgetting that he was engaged in a mighty and bloodless revolution with the British and thereby became a member of an official in England Team. How he was chosen could not probably have been explained even by the MCC selectors. Requested for his autograph, Gandhiji turned over the pages and put his signature as the 17th player of the MCC team led by Douglas Jardine in 193334. The autograph book is one of the treasured possessions of the Merlybourne Cricket Club(MCC) at Lord’s. — C.K.Subramaniam, Sanpada

>> Nothing is more soothing than a cup of hot tea, especially during the monsoon

It may have become popular during the British Raj, but there’s nothing more Indian than a steaming hot cup of tea. We know that you know how to drink your tea, so instead, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh show you what other ways you can enjoy the rich, aromatic plant across the city

rom Darjeeling to Assam and white to oolong — there are too many types of tea to keep track of. Whether you like the refreshing aroma of mint and green tea, the slightly pungent hit of strong black tea, the earthy flavour of rooibos or the citrusy lilt of lemon, there’s a tea for your taste. Instead of telling you where to buy your tea, we’re taking you on a tea journey, helping you find food, infused cocktails, skin treatments and tea themed products in the city to let you make the most of your love for tea. Tea expert Neetu Sarin, from Tea of Life, tells us that it’s a great time to be a tea drinker. She tells us about a few ways she’s seen tea being used across the city: Tea desserts: Tea desserts have been popular for a while. Matcha tea, a bright green, powdered Japanese tea is the most popular for cakes, cookies and ice creams. Earl Grey is another tea used a lot in desserts. Tea cocktails: You’ll find drinks such as green tea frappucinos and chai lattes on several menus. Several types of tea can also be used as a base in cocktails. They add a refreshing taste to alcoholic drinks. Hot toddy is an old British favourite that’s also popular. Tea used as a major ingredient in a dish: Tea has been used for smoking meat and poultry for a long time. Cheese spreads with matcha tea, tea flavoured salt sprinkled on mozzarella cheese and green tea coulis on grilled fish... modern day chefs are using tea to give a new twist to their food. Tea based spa/ beauty treatments: Green tea body scrubs and creams are very popular and even green tea perfumes are available in the market. Green tea tied in a muslin cloth and infused in your bath water is great for toning and tightening the skin along with the antioxidant benefits. Tea bags also make great eye masks for relaxing and getting rid of puffiness.

Tea TreaTs Want to dive into action and get a taste of some tea, in a slightly off-beat way? Take a look at how to do so:

Have a drink Tea cocktails are the latest trend in the city. These are two that you should try out: Tea toddy: Whipped up by bartender Vicky Solanki, the tea toddy from Serafina is a great way to kickstart your afternoon or end the night. It has honey, apple juice, caramel syrup, hot black tea, dark rum and cinnamon and costs `450 plus taxes. Where Serafina Mumbai, Palladium, Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel

how do i Look?

« store review: YLG & BomBaY shirt CompanY

You Look Great (YLG) is a new salon and spa that’s opened up at Jogeshwari. Priyanka Singh visits them to try their special facial

Y

LG, an abbreviated version of their actual name You Look Great, is a salon and spa that opened its third branch in Mumbai at Jogeshwari (W). You can spot YLG the moment you enter the main road that leads to the famous Hotel Mina. That’s because the salon has a huge entrance with all-glass doors and a large name board that has YLG lit up incandescently. YLG’s décor is anything but boring. That’s not because they have tried to throw around eccentric elements in their salon. YLG’s trademark logo colours are bright orange, pink and green and you’ll also see a good dose of the same colours balanced well with white in the spacious salon and spa. The wood furnishings rightly save the interiors from getting too overbearing. They have a roomy hairdressing section, a separate section for hair treatments, another one specially for manicures and pedicures, three facial rooms and two rooms for waxing. If you like to get your treatments in a private environ, then YLG will impress you to no end. YLG also offers ‘Transformer’, an intriguing virtual hairstyle application that allows customers to try 150+ different hairstyles virtually before choosing one that suits them best. The salon has a few breakthrough services and some of them that fall in this category include myWaxer — a hygienic, nonsugar based wax in disposable cartridges, Chromo White Facial, European Light Therapy Facial and Light Therapy Hair Spa. I chose to try one of their European Light Therapy (ELT) facials which are currently offered only by YLG in the city. The facials start from `1,000 and go up to `3,500, depending on what you pick up or are recommended by

their skin expert. The skin expert analyses your skin and according to that recommends a facial. However, if you feel that the treatment is too heavy on your pocket, you can choose one of your choice or tell the expert to suggest something within your price range. I was told to try the ELT Radical Radiance facial which lasted for 75 minutes and is priced at `3,500. The facial is a skin tone lightening treatment and can also be done in multiple sittings, which they say will derive optimum results. It’s similar to a normal facial, the major difference being the usage of ELT machine with its blue and red lights. One light is used to

>> YLG is very spacious and provides their clients with a lot of privacy. However, there is one aspect that I hope they alter. In a normal facial, after the blackhead removal process is done, while massaging the cream the therapist dips her hands in ice, so that your skin doesn’t get too warm. During my treatment at YLG salon, there was no dipping of the fingers in ice. So, while initially the warmth generated on my skin felt nice, due to repeated massaging, the skin got uncomfortably hot. The real test of a facial is its outcome. When I reached home, I noticed that some of my blackheads were still present. I was told that the radiance would last for a month. It’s been two weeks and while there indeed is a glow on my face, it is nothing different than what my modest facial priced at three digits would give me. Will I go for their ELT facial again? At that price, it’s not likely. But, I’d visit them for one of their spa therapies and to try out myWaxer.

The Bombay Shirt Company has come out with a new Travelling Tailor and bespoke service. Dev Goswami finds out more...

Launched late last year, Bombay Shirt Company (BSC) is still relatively new to the fashion market. However, their classy website has been on our radar for quite some time now. They have a detailed bespoke service that allows you to design your own shirt from scratch or make changes to one of their readymade designs. As far as the whole customisation process is concerned, it promises to be a breeze. They even have a measurement video on their website that will deconstruct the whole process of measuring yourself. They will also be launching an online customisation application that will allow you to choose from a number of customisation options that you can view online. Yes, it’s all online. They have a detailed customisation process which, according to us, ensures that by the end of the whole process, you’ll land up with a shirt that you can call your very own. Not only do they offer a number of fabrics, they will also help you create your own design by letting you choose

between a combination of cuffs, collars, buttons and plackets. Quite expectedly, you can also personalise your shirt by monogramming your initials onto the final shirt design. They have also just launched a service called Travelling Tailor that is perfect for those who lead busy lives. Under this service, a Travelling Tailor will visit your home, take your measurements and help you choose between the range of fabrics. At the same time, you can design, style and customise the shirt to your taste and preference. You can book an appointment by either calling on the number (see box) or visiting their website. And as far as the price range is concerned, their readymade shirts are priced at `1,880 onwards, so you can expect to spend more than that depending on the fabric you choose to get tailored.

EuropEan sojourn French inspired Chez Moi’s Andheri branch has a new menu on offer. Rhea Dhanbhoora sees whether it’s worth the hype...

Small wonder With everyone counting calories, health cafés have really taken off in the city. Read on to see what Tejasvi Desai’s verdict is on Café Pishu’s

It’s green and orange and screams healthy and fresh. Café Pishu’s is a colourful food joint that is sure to catch your attention as you walk by. One look at the menu and you will be surprised at the variety of healthy food and drink options the small place offers. The menu had descriptions of the ingredients and a breakdown of the calories of each dish, which makes it easier to pick out food from the

multitude of options. We started off with a tester of their Mulberry Treat (`150), a milk-based concoction of mulberry, litchi and strawberry and it was so nice that we eventually ended up ordering this refreshing drink. Next, we tried their Pan Masala Mocktail Shake (`130), a unique and nice blend. From the mocktail juices, we recommend the Fibre Sip (`130), an exotic blend of strawberry, kiwi and

>> The Banoffee (top) was just alright, but the Coq au vin (middle) and Chicken Stuffed Zucchini (bottom) are must-try dishes on Chez Moi’s new menu

>> Opt for the Paan Masala Mocktail shake if you want a refreshing drink >> We also tried their Pasta in Red and White Sauce

love rustic décor. And while Chez Moi is a French name, the faux fireplace, big greyblue and cream tiles, ornate white sofa and blue trunk table reminded me of an old, English home in Victorian England. The big screen TV is the only reminder that you’re actually in 21st century Mumbai. Apart from a few tables lining the sides of the wall, Chez Moi looks like a cosy European home. There’s even a ‘kitchen’ area, with high chairs, a kitchen cabinet and a blackboard with the day’s specials, embellished with blue and white decorative wall plates. I visited to try their new menu, so let’s get down to business. First up was a too sweet Appletini (`390) and a refreshing Caipiroska (`290), both tasty but lacking any real punch. Starters arrived with a celebratory flourish, kicked off by the much applauded Cheese & Leek Cigars (`220) that’s worth the hype. The crisp phyllo pastry was stuffed with melt-in-the-mouth cheese and served with ponzu sauce with the right hint of ginger. The zucchini served with the Chicken Stuffed Zucchini (`245) was delicious, but the chicken was a little dry. Starters are tempting, but make sure you leave room for the mains. The Coq au vin (`330) may be the most over-served French braised chicken in the city, but

pineapple. High on fibre and low on sugar, it was more than just filling, especially for the price. The Hot Organic Salad (`149) was one of the healthiest food options on the menu, with exotic vegetables and grilled paneer on a bed of mildly sautéed lettuce, but it scored low on taste. If you want to bite into a healthy pizza, try their Lavash Pizza Exotica (`130). With a wholewheat multigrain base made of flax seeds, sunflower seeds and sesame, this pizza is very different from the regular ones but it’s tasty nonetheless. The vegetables in the Brown Rice Meal with Green Sauce (`130) broke the monotony of the gravy’s texture, which had a spicy Thai tinge to it. The portions might seem small for one person but paired with a drink, it’s filling. After the healthy main course, we decided to indulge a little when it came to the dessert and ordered their Cuppa Brownie (`120). Topped with vanilla ice-cream and chocolate shavings, the brownie was homemade and gooey with crunchy walnut bits. They even offer Fruity Oats (`109), a combination of fresh fruit with hot flavoured oats for those who are watching their calorie charts rather strictly. With prompt service and a reasonably priced menu, Pishu’s is a health freak’s haven.

the subtle wine and mushroom, coupled with the flavourful chicken with skin was a surprise. The chicken was not overdone, so the flesh remained succulent. I was skeptical about skipping other meat options for basa, a fish that’s done to death and isn’t typically European. But, the Root Ginger & Cilantro Steam Baked Vietnamese Basa (`365) transformed the fish into a delicately flavoured, lemon butter soaked indulgence that is delightfully underpriced (not that I’m complaining). Sadly, neither the Chocolate Tart (`225) nor the Banoffee Pie (`175) impressed me. The chocolate stuck to my palette, the cream was too thin, the pastry too thick and the balance between banana and toffee not right. The restaurant can get crowded and noisy after 10pm, so visit early if you want to get a feel of the cosy interiors. It could do with some music changes (the décor and music are misplaced) and an improved dessert menu, but the food, service and décor were on par with my expectations. WhAt’s Cooking? Glynda Alves tells you about the new eateries in the city Pastaa Bastta

The newest eatery to make its way to Carter Road is Pastaa Bastta, an Italian deli that serves “gourmet pasta, ready-to-eat salads, artisan breads and desserts.” We tried out a Penne with Basil Herb Sauce and Herbed Chicken (our initial order was Farfalle with Lamb Meatballs, but they didn’t have it). You can also choose unlimited vegetables (think Subway style). The pasta was delicious but the chicken and vegetable options weren’t generous. Takeaway service speed and packaging needs to improve as it did get a little leaky on the car ride home. For `170, we think it’s a great meal option. Where Near Cocoberry, Carter Road, Bandra (W)

Markets Bottomed Out?

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (August 16, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose moderately on Wednesday (August 14, 2013) a net 43.00 points (0.75%) and closed at the 5742 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 5715 points level. It then declined into the red and registered the day’s low at the 5690 points level at 9.41 a.m. The index then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 2.55 p.m. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 5754 points level at 3.26 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 64 points and closed above the psychologically important 5700 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 30 were gainers, while 20 stocks closed in the red. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables, oil & gas, metal and realty stocks, while selling was seen in capital goods, IT, healthcare and technology stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 3.15%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 751 were gainers, 602 were losers and 65 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line but both lines are converging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5476 points level. The next support is at the 5359 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 5776 points level. The next resistance is at the 5894 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5729 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5703. Support (2) = 5665. Resistance (1) = 5768. Resistance (2) = 5793.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive, but small white body candle on higher volumes. This is positive. Further, the index has risen above its 15 days moving average, confirming a bottoming out pattern. The index is now above its 5 and 15 days moving averages, while the 5 day moving average is rising. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. However, The velocity parameters continue to remain neutrally trended, but with a positive bias. Technically, since the downwards risk seems to have reduced, Investors may consider Buying in small quantities in shares that are fundamentally sound and have a longterm potential.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 5627) Positive. Has crossed above its 15-day average (at 5725) Positive. Is below its 25-day average (at 5831) Negative. Is below its 200-day average (at 5851) Negative. All the four averages are negatively trended. Negative.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a neutral market but with a positive bias. Target Rs. 44

Operationally, the quarterly numbers of TVS Motor (TVSL) came in line with our estimate, while lower depreciation charges and higher nonoperating income resulted in higher than expected net profit. Its revenue dipped 5% YoY & 1% QoQ owing to 11.5% YoY & 4.5% QoQ decline in volume. Its EBIDTA fell 8.4% YoY (up 5% QoQ) in Q1FY14. Higher contribution of three wheeler segment is driving TVSL’s average realization per vehicle by 8% YoY & 4% QoQ. Its depreciation was flat YoY, but down 9.4% QoQ to Rs. 314 mn, while non operating income grew 70% YoY to Rs. 86 mn. Its adjusted PAT grew 1.5% YoY & 5% QoQ to Rs. 519 mn. Outlook & Valuation: Due to decline in market share, we lower our volume forecast, and due to currency benefit on export revenue, we maintain our revenue estimate for FY14E & FY15E. On account of lower depreciation and low interest outflow on declining debt, we marginally increase our EPS estimates for FY15E by 3.5%, keeping FY14E EPS unchanged. However, as TVSL is losing market share amid stiff competition and limited scope for margin expansion, we lower our target P/E multiple from 10x to 8x 1 Yr forward. Accordingly, we lower our target price by 15% to Rs. 44 per share, valuing the stock at 8xFY15E EPS. Currently, the stock trades at a P/E of 6xFY15E. Considering recent price correction and stock’s attractive valuation, we reiterate our “BUY” on the stock.

Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on Oil India CMP: Rs. 491

Target Rs. 720

OINL’s Q1 PAT at Rs 6.1bn was below our/street estimates on lower crude sales (0.87mmt) and realisations (US$ 45.9/bbl) and a drop in VAP sales (10.3tmt vs. 12tmt in Q4FY13). NG prod./sales however inched up QoQ to 7.22/5.7mmscmd. Maintain BUY on: (a) a likely improvement in crude realisations on lower gross U/R of Rs 1398bn/939bn in FY14/FY15, (b) higher crude production/sales in the quarters ahead and (c) cheap valuations of 6xFY15E (ignoring earnings upside from NG price hikes in FY15). Crude sales/realisations lower QoQ: Despite higher production (0.89mmt vs. 0.86mmt in Q4FY13), crude sales declined to 0.87mmt (from 0.88mmt in Q4FY13) due to a major fire at the Numaligarh refinery in May’13. Crude realisations dropped as well, as OINL was made to subsidise OMCs at the prevalent discount of US$ 56/bbl despite muted crude prices of US$ 102/bbl (US$ 111/bbl in Q4FY13). We expect a pick-up in the company’s crude oil sales over the coming quarters as the Numaligarh refinery resumes operations. Realisations to improve on lower U/R: We expect U/R drop to Rs 1398bn/939bn in FY14/FY15 on: (a) a sustained increase (Rs 0.5/ltr/month) in diesel prices and (b) sluggish fuel demand growth due to higher prices and a poor macro. If crude prices remain muted, upstream subsidy/bbl could come down as well. We model for FY14/FY15 realisations of US$ 55/59/bbl for OINL. Significant investment plans lined up: OINL is actively scouting for exploration/ production assets to support its inorganic growth. It recently acquired Videocon’s 10% stake in a Mozambique offshore block via a 40:60 consortium with ONGC. With cash reserves of US$ 2bn+, we don’t see such acquisitions as an impeding factor. Maintain BUY with a TP of Rs 720 on attractive valuations, factoring in the overhangs of higher U/R but not the earnings upside from gas price hikes in FY15.

LKP calls a ‘Buy’ on Gujarat State Petronet CMP: Rs. 58

Target Rs. 78

GSPL’s net profit of Rs1.26bn was higher than our estimate of Rs1.16 on account of higher transmission tariff. Transmission tariff increased by 56.3% yoy to Rs1.41/scm (qoq -20.2%), which was higher than our estimate of Rs1.20/scm. Higher transmission tariff was on account of take-or-pay contract, whereby consumers continued to pay tariff despite transmitting lower gas volumes. GSPL’s volumes for the quarter declined by 28.9% yoy to 2,015mmscm. The fall in gas transmission volume was due to falling gas production from KG D6. However on sequential basis, transmission volumes increased marginally by 1.1%. GSPL’s operating profit for the quarter stood at Rs2.7bn (yoy +9.2% qoq -17.7%) which was higher than our estimate. Valuation and view: We believe that concerns relating to transmission volumes will be an overhang on GSPL in the near term. However, we note that LNG capacities scheduled to come up by early FY15 could give much needed fillip to GSPL’s gas volumes. We value GSPL on DCF basis given the long term earnings visibility and arrive at a fair value of Rs78 per share. We have used WACC of 11.5% and terminal growth rate of 2% for DCF valuation. We maintain our BUY rating on the stock with a target price of Rs78. At the CMP, the stock is trading at 7.2x and 3.7x FY15e EPS and EBITDA respectively.

The decline in WPI inflation in the past few months had been largely driven by a sharp fall in core /nonfood manufacturing inflation. This was due to weak demand-side pressures as well as low metal prices. Core (non-food manufacturing) inflation, after falling for two consecutive months, rose to 2.4% in July from 2.0%. CCII (CRISIL’s Core inflation indicator, which excludes the metals from core inflation) also increased marginally to 3.7% from 3.6% in June. This reflects some pass-through of rising costs into the final products even in a weak demand environment, believes Crisil.

World Bank To Give India USD 100 Mn Loan For Housing Projects By A Business Reporter

T

he World Bank has signed an agreement with the Indian government to provide a USD 100 million loan to help low-income families secure housing loans. “The Loan and Project Agreements for World Bank (IDA) assistance of USD 100 million for low-income housing finance project were signed between Government of

India/National Housing Bank (NHB) and the World Bank here yesterday,” the Finance Ministry said in a release today. The agreement was signed by Department of Economic Affairs Joint Secretary Nilaya Mitash, NHB Chairman and Managing Director RV Verma and World Bank (India) Operations Advisor Michael Haney, it added. The objective of the project is to provide access to sustainable housing finance for low-income house-

holds to purchase, build or upgrade their dwellings, it added. Financing under the project aims to create incentives for lenders to focus on lower-income households through a net all-in reduction of the lenders’ cost of funds of about 200300 basis points, the release said. “It is a financial intermediary loan for an implementation period of five years. NHB is the implementing agency,” it added.

Delay In Refunds Cannot Be An Excuse For Not Filing Tax Returns, Say Experts By Mayura Shanbaug

T

BUSINESS

he trial court’s decision to sentence a businessman Harish Bhasin, the director of a private company to one year’s rigorous imprisonment for not filing income tax returns for two years has left every one wondering whether the decision will set a precedent for many more such cases that are pending in several courts of the country. “There is a penalty provision and 7 years imprisonment for not filing tax returns given in the law. This is the law of the land which one has to follow,” says Pankaj Ghadiali of P. C. Ghadiali & Co. a firm of Chartered Accountants. The argument that the businessman had an unsettled dispute regarding his refunds could not hold in the court of law. “There can not be any excuse for not filling returns,” said Ghadiali. “There are different channels and ways to address your grievances,” he said. The trial court made the observation while announcing the sentence that “tax evasion is rising and should be curbed with a firm hand”. Does it indicate that the government ma-

chinery will be dealing with such cases with iron hand? “The government which is in a tight revenue situation and seems to be taking a not so soft stance towards defaulters,” says Anil Harish, Partner at D.M. Harish & Co. “We may see more such news in the coming days,” he said. The IT department submitted that Bhasin was assessed at a taxable income of Rs 11.98 crore for 2006-07 and the tax liability was around Rs 4 crore. For the next year, it was Rs 10 crore. Incidentally, Bhasin was India’s highest individual tax payer in 2009 However, Harish points out that on the others hand there are thousands of refunds pending with the income tax department for which government seems to be in no hurry to settle. And therein lies the divide between honest taxpayers and the revenue authorities. Most feel that the government does not reflect the same integrity and enthusiasm when it comes to refunding excess tax paid as it expects from the taxpayer. “We are made to run from pillar to post to get our refunds from the tax department for years, said Prarthana Joshi (name changed), who is waiting for her refunds for the assessment

year 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. “When we go to Mumbai office they tell us to go to Andheri office which in turn tell us to contact CPC Bangluru, I am being harassed to get my own money back,” she said. “They are quick to penalize us for not filing, who will penalize them for not returning our own hard earned money,” she asked. Incidentally, the interest paid by the government on refund is just 6% per annum whereas the government penalty for not filling income tax is 12%. “This disparity is not fair on government’s part,” said Anil Harish. “The people’s refund money with the state can be termed or should be treated as borrowings by the government, which the government is getting at a cheaper rate of just 6% that is totally unacceptable,” he says. However, Pankaj Ghadiali explains that due to computerization the records are still not up to date, “it will take another one or two years before the refund process becomes unhindered,” he says. Till then, perhaps the taxpayer will continue to be deprived of his rightful dues.

BUSINESS BRIEFS 65% More Traffic On Online Retail Sites

With the festive season around the corner, there is a 65% increase from last year in online shopping, according to industry body Assocham. “This festive season, there is a 65% more traffic on online retail websites and shopping on ground has taken a back seat. Apart from convenience, rising fuel price, security reasons, online discounts and availability with abundance of choice keeping them (consumers) indoors,” Assocham general secretary D S Rawat said in a statement.

Auditors Red-flag Kingfisher’s Revival Plans

Grounded carrier Kingfisher Airlines’ decision to consider it a ‘going concern’ entity, despite having accumulated huge losses and defaulted on loans, has come for a sharp criticism by its own auditors, given a lack of clarity about its revival plans. At the same time, the auditors of Kingfisher’s parent entity, United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd, have also expressed their concern over the company’s significant exposure to the airline, which has been grounded for about ten months now and its flying permit also lapsed long ago.

Telcos Owe Government Over Rs 30,000 Cr

Telecom operators, including BSNL and Bharti Airtel, owe the government Rs 30,158.05 crore as outstanding spectrum charges, including the onetime fee and usage charges. As per official data, GSM players owe Rs 25,748.91 crore as spectrum charges while the outstanding dues of CDMA operators stood at Rs 4,409.14 crore. Demand notices have been issued to the operators to recover the amount.

RIL To Invest $3.18 Bn In R-Series Gas Field

Reliance Industries plans to invest USD 3.18 billion in R-Series gas field in the flagging KG-D6 block as it looks to reverse the decline in output by quickly bringing in new fields on production. RIL and its partners BP plc of UK and Niko Resources, plan to produce 13-15 million standard cubic meters per day of gas for 13 years from D-34 discovery in the KG-DWN98/3 or KG-D6 block, sources privy to the development said. The planned output from D-34, which is estimated to hold an in place reserve of 2.2 Trillion cubic feet, is equivalent to the combined current production from Dhirubhai-1 and 3 (D1&D3) gas field and MA field in the KG-D6 block.

Deepika Padukone: Crore score dobaara!

BIPASHA BASU: Being a Bengali she loves fish, especially the fresh river variety. She enjoys it in any form – fried, curried or grilled. She also likes Manglorean curries. Throughout the day she eats fresh fruits and salads. Favourite Restaurant: Any coastal food restaurant. She likes food coming from smaller joints like Trishna or Thai Me Up-for soups and chicken.

B

adminton’s loss is Bollywood’s gain! Only recently, latest Bollywood female superstar Deepika Padukone (who had given up the shuttlecock game to start ‘court-ing’ a filmy career was delighted when her recent Ranbir Kapoor-starrer movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani entered the coveted Rs.100 crore club. Now her latest release Chennai Express which has the bankable Shah Rukh Khan has also emerged a ‘smash hit’ to wear the glittering ‘sau karod’ club crown. But the modest Deepika, like her unassuming legendary father Prakash Padukone, a former world badminton champ, refuses to be heady with success thanks to her ‘crore score dobaara’. Even as accolades pour in for Deepika’s comic performance in Chennai Express, as the exuberant Tamilian speaking Hindi with the Southside accent and incorrect gender and especially her nightmarish avatar, she remains firmly grounded. Reacts Deepika, “Frankly, it was a diligent team effort and both director Rohit and costar SRK brought out the best in me. Although SRK and I came together in Om Shanti Om way back in 2007, we never really lost touch with each other off-screen. So I had an ideal comfort-zone. The Chennai script gave me full scope to showcase my talent. Fitness is more than having muscles: Varun Dhawan

N

ew Delhi, Aug 15 (PTI) Bollywood newbie Varun Dhawan may have flaunted a muscular look in his debut ‘Student Of The Year’ but he insists that being fit entails a lot more things than having huge muscles. The 26-year-old actor, who is the son of Bollywood filmmaker David Dhawan, is a fitness enthusiast. “I have been passionate about fitness from a very young age. For me fitness is a part of my everyday life. But fitness does not mean having big muscles, it means being active, quick and flexible. It can be defined in many terms”, Varun told PTI. Varun hits the gym for one and a half hours everyday and is trained by Prashant Sawant. “I do a mix and match of many exercises. But before anything I do, I go for a warm up as it of prime importance. My trainer is very helpful in keeping me fit. We also do heavy weight mixed with cardiovascular exercises”, he said. The actor has come out with a fitness DVD ‘Pumpstart’ which has a dance routine that flexes 13 major muscle groups in the body. It is choreographed by Remo D’souza.

London girl Anisa Butt debuts in ‘Baat Bann Gayi’ By Sandip Hattangadi

P

roducer Syed Asif Jah and Vibhu Agarwal’s romantic comedy ‘Baat Bann Gayi’ is about to release and we had the opportunity to view the first look of the film. On this occasion, we interviewed debutant Anisa Butt and this is how the conversation went.

Tell us something about your film ‘Baat Bann Gayi’. The protagonist of this film, Kabir (Ali Fazal) is a novelist deeply in love with a beautiful young girl Rachna (Anisa), played by me who is brought up by her brother Laxmi Nivas (Gulshan Grover) and his wife Sulochna (Amrita Raichand) and are in search of an intelligent and Professor-kind of handsome young man as a groom for Rachna. Kabir successfully impresses Rachna’s brother Laxmi Nivas. The real twist in the tale comes when Kabir’s look alike Rasiya Bihari, who works for a land mafia Car-

los Rehbar Pasha (Razak Khan), happens to land at Rachna’s bungalow. Rasiya is amused to find everyone mistaking him as Kabir. When he sees Rachna in the house, he gives away his heart to her and decides to stay in the house as Kabir. Rasiya hatches a plan to make sure that Kabir does not come back in Rachna’s life. From here, the story takes a turn. T

HERE are a few generations that have grown up without seeing some of the most successful Hindi films of all time. So for them, success is measured by today’s standard — money. And because records matter so much to a fiercely competitive industry, high box-office returns have become the only measure of success. The art versus mainstream divide started somewhere in the 1970s, and it became a kind of accepted standard — art = boring; commercial = mindless. This has carried on and come to the absurd state now, when commercial simply cannot be artistic or intelligent, because then the lowest common denominator cannot be tapped, and the Rs.100-crore mark cannot be reached. And that is more important than making a good film that will be appreciated across India, by all kinds or people — mass as well as class. Before the great divide, the directors making mainstream cinema kept popular ingredients in mind; the films had strong plots, songs, dances, quotable dialogues and a creative quality that made them classics. V. Shantaram, Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Vijay Anand made successful films, but did not stoop to the levels of stupidity that some of today’s top grossers do, just to make the fastest initial bundle, because hardly any films lasts more than that.

Dumb & Dumber

In the eighties, commercial cinema was fighting TV, video, low attention spans and dealing with a general decline in educational and intellectual standards in the country. Films had to please the class that had only cinema as a form of escapism, and did just about anything to get their ticket money, as fast as possible. If the films were totally nonsensical, so be it. Today, by some odd reverse snobbery, Desai’s films like Amar Akbar Anthony are counted as popular classics, but the film’s lack of sense or logic was deplorable. Now, films that make a lot of all films made with pride, love, money quickly are the only and yes, intelligence, a much films that matter, and they also derided quality now. But when make enough noise in the filmmakers were story tellers, media to stifle criticism or creators and artistes, they re- mock it. Coming into the make-or-break match, Pradyna Gadre and Shem Goh V recorded a 21-9 19-21 11-8 win over Markis Kido of Indonesia and Thailand’s Sapsiree Taerattanachal. Touted as the biggest match of the day, the women’s singles clash between Saina and Sindhu turned out to a one-sided affair as the London Olympics bronze medallist registered a 21-19 21-8 win over Sindhu, who looked a pale shadow of her fighting self which has earned her the title of a giant slayer. Saina has not won a single title this year and also failed to win a medal at world championship after having a troubled stomach but she tamed her fast rising compatriot after some initial tough moments. She recovered from a slow start to dominate the proceedings against Sindhu, who broke into the world top 10 in the latest BWF ranking. Sindhu dominated the proceed-

Sindhu enjoyed a healthy lead in the first two breaks. The young Hyderabadi was leading 7-3 in the first interval and then kept a 14-10 lead in the second break. But Saina, who was depending more on her baseline down the line smashes till now, changed gears and clawed back with some immaculate body smashes and then marched ahead 17-15. Sindhu kept her cool and grabbed two quick points to make it 17-17 but she lost a point at the net to hand over the lead to

Saina again. Egged on by the vociferous nearly-packed stadium crowd, the 23-year-old Commonwealth Games champion moved to a two-game point lead and although she lost a game point, she sealed it with a smash to pocket the opening game.In the second game, Sindhu could not play her natural game. She looked completely offcolour and struggled with her strokes. She committed many unforced errors as Saina led 7-4 and 14-6 in the first two intervals. Sindhu could not break Saina’s rally game and surrendered rather meekly in the end as Saina shut the

doors on her younger colleague with a powerful smash. “Sindhu gave me a tough time in the beginning but the cheer from the crowd really helped me in giving my best and I hope I can continue to live upto the expectations of the crowd and my team,” Saina said after the match. Commenting on Sindhu’s performance Nehwal added, “The way she plays, I’m sure she has a bright future ahead.” Earlier, in the opening match, RMV Gurusaidutt squandered a one-game advantage to go down fighting 21-15 14-21 9-11 to Saemsomboonsuk Tanongsak of Thailand in the first men’s singles competition to allow Hyderabad to lead 1-0. The world number four Saina then helped Hyderabad to a 2-0 lead with an emphatic win over Sindhu. Men’s doubles pair of Markis Kido of Indonesia and Mathias Boe of Denmark then kept Awadhe Warriors’ hopes alive with a 21-14 21-20 win in the third match. Still lagging 1-2, young K Srikanth was entrusted with the responsibility of bringing the Warriors back into the contest and he didn’t disappoint as he stunned higher-ranked Ajay Jayaram in straight-games to make it 2-2. The Thailand Grand Prix gold winner notched up a 21-17 21-19 over the world number 24 Jayaram after lagging 12-17 in the second game to raise hopes of a victory over the Hyderabad Hotshots.

Sindhu’s rise will lessen burden on Saina, feels Hidayat

By Amit Kumar Das

NEW DELHI: Former Olympic and World champion Taufik Hidayat feels that the emergence of the phenomenally talented PV Sindhu will not only reduce the burden of expectations on Saina Nehwal but also make India a force to reckon with in women’s singles category. The 18-year-old Sindhu had won the bronze medal at the recently-concluded World Championship and Taufik said she can provide a good support to Saina in women’s singles. “I saw Sindhu quarterfinal match. But could not watch the semi-final match as I didn’t have access to live telecast. I think it is good for women’s singles now that Sindhu is coming up. India already has Saina and Sindhu will be a good back-up. It is good for Indian badminton,” Taufik said. The 32-year-old Indonesian feels things are changing in world badminton and China are not no longer the force it used to be across all competitions. “Nowadays there are so many players in women’s singles. But in women’s doubles, China is still very strong. But I am surprised to find Lin Dan win men’s singles because he didn’t play for a year. But he still had the firepower be good enough to win the title.” “I think once Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei retire, the rest of the field is just so so (mediocre). These two are class players,” he added. The three-time Asian Games gold medallist, who retired from the game after the Indonesian Super Series, is back in India to be a part of the IBL. The six-time Indonesian Open winner, said the IBL is good for Indian badminton and he wants to give something back to the game. “It is very good for Indian badminton as foreign players are coming for the league and it will give motivation to the young local players. But for me, I have already retired from badminton after the Indonesia Open so don’t expect too much from me. But I hope I can motivate the young Indian players,” he said. Asked about his team, Hyderabad Hotshots, Taufik said: “I feel great to be a part of Hyderabad. We have Saina and a few other players. Also we have a good men’s doubles pair.”

UMBAI: Despite unseeded Nigel D’Sa having match point, Pune’s top seed Mayank Gole saved the day and went on to turn the tables to bag the men’s singles crown in the first Maharashtra State senior badminton selection tournament hosted by Khar Gymkhana. Mayank triumphed 16-21, 21-17, 22-20 in the men’s singles title match which lasted 72 minutes. If Nigel dominated the first game, it was the Pune lad who called the shots in the second. Even in the decider, Mayank was way ahead midway, but Nigel put his all into all-out attack and caught him at 13-all. Thereafter both fought tooth and nail before Nigel reached match point. But it was not to be his day, as first he sent Mayank’s serve out and then saw Mayank smashing the next to win the tie. The day proved to be double joy for the Pune players, as the unseeded Aditi Mutatkar was at her

aggressive best while toppling top seeded junior Riya Pillai. Though Aditi was out of action because of knee injury for over a year, she was fast and her strokes were sharp, which often left Riya struggling. Aditi won 21-9, 21-10 in just about 25 minutes. INCINNATI: French tennis star Marion Bartoli made a shock retirement announcement, ending her career at the top of her game just six weeks after winning Wimbledon. Citing a string of injuries, Bartoli dropped the bombshell shortly after losing in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters to Simona Halep. Bartoli, who is currently ranked a career-high seventh in the world, suffered a stunning 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 defeat to the 21-year-old Romanian. "It's time for me to retire and to call it a career. I feel it's time for me to walk away," said the 28year-old as she wiped away tears. The announcement comes just two weeks before Bartoli was scheduled to compete in the US Open in New York. Bartoli said Wimbledon helped her reach her goal of winning a Grand Slam but also took a toll on her physical and mental wellbeing. "I've been a tennis player for a long time, and I had the chance to make my biggest dream a reality," said Bartoli, who won more than $11 million in prize money during her 13-year career. "I felt I really… really pushed through the ultimate limits to make it happen. But now I just can't do it anymore," she said. “I've been through a lot of injuries since the beginning of the year. I really pushed through and left it all during ... Wimbledon. I really felt I gave all the energy I have left inside my body. It (Wimbledon) will stay forever with me, but now my body just can't cope with everything," she added. Bartoli, who turned profes-

IN BRIEF Spinner Ahmed in Australia's ODI squad for series against England

SYDNEY: Pakistan-born legspinner Fawad Ahmed was included in an 18-man Australia squad for this month's one-day international and Twenty20 series against England. Ahmed, 31, a former refugee who became an Australian citizen last month, replaces Xavier Doherty, who played in the ICC Champions Trophy in England last June. Chief selector John Inverarity said Ahmed has an opportunity to be the squad's lead spin bowler. "Fawad has been a consistent wicket-taker on the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa," Inverarity said. "He is a very good and mature leg-spin bowler and the selection panel is keen to see how he fares in international competition."

Kaneria to challenge his life ban in London commercial court

‘Don't question the credibility of Khel Ratna panel’

NEW DELHI: In a veiled reference to disgruntled athletes Krishna Poonia and H N Girisha, former shooter Moraad Ali Khan said no one should question the credibility of the Khel Ratna award selection panel. The recommendation of shooter Ronjan Sodhi for the Khel Ratna has sparked off a controversy as a member of the selection panel has raised questions about the selection process. The panel member has claimed that woman discus thrower Poonia and London Paralympics silver medallist Girisha were shortlisted for voting by 11 out of 12 selection panel members and Sodhi's name was not considered initially. The decision to bring Sodhi back into contention was taken after one member, a former shooter, came in late for the meeting. Girisha's name was removed and there was voting between Sodhi and Poonia.

TROMSO, NORWAY: Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran kept himself in the hunt by holding Sergey Karjakin of Russia to a draw in the first game of the second round of World Chess Cup here. After beating Romanian Constantin Lupulescu in the tiebreak games, Sasikiran took it easy in the first encounter of the two-game minimatch and gave little chance to Karjakin, ranked ninth in the world currently. Grandmaster B Adhiban, however, could not make use of a good advantage and drew with Brazilian GM Alexander Fier after an opening tussle. After a few surprises in the opener, most of the higher ranked players got off to a good start in the first game of second round in this USD 1.6 million knock-out event.
