he Clean-Up marshals, who were suspended last year over several complaints of corruption, and arrogance, have again hit the roads, particularly at busy railway stations. However, citizens are complaining that nothing has changed in their behaviour. Last year, after facing severe criticism over their conduct by
the public, political representatives and also the High Court, the civic body had suspended the operation of Clean-Up marshals. Earlier this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, again mooted this scheme, stating it was aimed at bringing civic sense and not revenue

Missing minor, found after seven days, was with girl who was trying to push her into prostitution
On Saturday, the ADC had carried a front page story titled ‘Twisted Rascal’ about a disabled man forcing minors into prostitution after luring them with promises of a good life and raping them. The senior police inspector from Vakola police station had formed the special team to crack the case. The victim, a standard X student had left home on July 7, telling her parents that she was going to get her results. According to sources from the Vakola
police station, the victim had, before leaving, written a small note for parents stating that she was unhappy with the standard of living at home and was going away for a better future. The sources revealed that in the evening the victim met the accused minor named Rani and the disabled man Nandlal Patil at the Santacruz railway station, and the two girls headed for Gujarat. Do you think Clean-Up marshals are mere extortionists or are they honestly doing their jobs? Dnyaraj Nikam Leader of Opposition in BMC These Clean-Up marshals are only extorting money. I don’t see any development in them. No training is given to them. Mihir Pandya BPO executive I think the aim of Clean-Up marshal is to create a civic sense among people not only extort money. However, the picture is the exactly the opposite. Bhushan Joshi Insurance official Clean-Up marshals from groups in front of railway stations and catch strangers to the city. They don’t go to colleges, schools, gardens and markets. Kajal Gohil Homemaker Clean-Up marshals are really doing their job. They are not a non-profit organization so they will run behind the money for their bread and butter. Gajanan Pattewar Entrepreneur They catch only easy prey like businessmen and strangers to the city. They don’t take action against local college going students.

As teachers who get trained under the teachers training program are refusing to share the knowledge and train others at the local level after they get back, the state board is being compelled to get the knowledge conveyed through untrained teachers By Yatin Ingle

very year the state board sends short-listed teachers across the state for the State level teachers training programs organized by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE). After the completion of the training, these teachers in turn train other teachers from their regions, cities and districts. These programs are compulsory for school teachers since they are acquainted with changes and new teaching methods and can also have their queries answered. However, it has been noticed that many teachers who had attended the MSBSHSE training programs are now reluctant to helm the local training programs. This leaves no option for the state board but to make last minute arrangements with teachers who

the look of relief on the faces of the people being rescued andre-united with their loved ones.” Would he go again if called on risky rescue missions like Uttarakhand? That one was a nobrainer and he actually laughed. Of course he would! “I have done Border Security Force (BSF) operations in the north east fairly recently assisted in antiNaxalite operations. Undoubtedly I would volunteer again in the future, if the need arises in a crisis situation.” But for now, he can rest.
Surely things can change
A long way from scenes of devastation and death next door, and an even longer way from hometown Mumbai, Captain Andrew Manchanda at the Harsil helicopter base in Uttarakhand where he flew dozens of sorties into the hills to rescue trapped pilgrims and tourists.
Home is the hero WE must confess to liking the exactitude of the Central government’s calculations, that not more than 4,200 people have been killed in the Uttarakhand disaster, far less than the 11,000 figure currently being bruited around. The government bases this upon mobile numbers of victims and this is the number they have managed to trace. Good for them, and we hope that among the numbers is Dr Vidyadhar Kulkarni, missing since June 16, whose story appeared on our front page on Tuesday. Meanwhile in Mumbai, the ADC caught up with one of the brave men working at the heart of the rescue operations to find out a bit more. Captain Andrew Manchanda flies helicopters for Pawan Hans, has 22 years experience and has been trained in off-shore flying. And yet, when the call came, he was off the chocks and into the air. What prompted him to volunteer to be a part of this sad, mad, dangerous operation which has claimed so many lives, we asked. He said, “When the call came from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to the Pawan Hans Corporate office to deploy a helicopter to assist in the evacuation, I volunteered spontaneously because I felt it was the need of the hour, peoples lives were in danger, so I decided to take up the job like a mission.” And with missionary zeal, Andrew
transported his skills from over the ocean to the high hills of our abused mountains. He was informed about the deployment at 7.30 a.m. on June 22, took off in his helicopter at 12 noon from Juhu aerodrome to Dehradun via Jaipur, and without loss of time and no fuss, started rescue operations the next day itself. “I did 23 hours and 20 minutes of evacuation flying from the main helipad Sarasdara, within the districts of Bageshwar and Uttarkashi - in the areas of Dharasu, Matli, Maneri, Bhatwari and Harsil. We rescued over 100 distressed people - young, old, sick, and distributed approximately 2,500 kg of food and supplies” he says matter-of-factly on the phone from his Bandra residence. Was he scared, we asked, a stupid question actually, because you would be an idiot not to be afraid. And Andrew is frank about the risks. “It was overall a risky operation. First, the weather conditions were hampering the speed of the rescue operations, with low visibility due to constant rain, mist, fog and cloud bursts that cause severe up and down drafts, which can cause damage to the aircraft. Then there was working around tricky terrain, ascending altitudes of nearly 10,000 feet over high mountains, going down zig-zag valleys. But what stays longest in the mind is
AND on another tack, practically unrelated except in the loosest sense of the word, we have to comment upon the Defense Services bewilderingly oldfashioned ways. A Flight Lieutenant (equivalent to a Captain in the Army) has been sacked for having an affair with another officer’s wife. The wife committed suicide last November after an argument with her husband. In the armed forces, having an affair with a colleague’s wife is a punishable offence, termed “stealing of a brother officer’s wife’s affection”. But surely there must be some mitigating circumstance if the woman herself is the offending officer’s senior – in this case, also a Squadron Leader. It is not exactly a case of stealing away with “the little woman” surely, especially if the little woman had at least as much as the junior officer, to do with decisions.

This is not a scene of any devastation in the north, but of our very own Madh Island in Malad West, where the temple in the background, the partly uprooted tree and a water pump in flood waters evoke memories of disasters that have washed over the country due to the largely heavy monsoon activity this year.

Abu Salem to move EU By Philip Varghese

lmost a week after the Supreme Court reserved its order on gangster Abu Salem plea for quashing trials against him in various cases after the Portugal court terminated his extradition to India for ‘violation’ of deportation rules by authorities in the country, Salem’s Portuguese lawyer Manuel Luis Ferreira with Indian lawyer Saba Qureshi approached the Sessions Court in South Mumbai with an application to meet Salem. Salem will move the European Union (EU) seeking execution of the order cancelling his extradition to India issued by the Portuguese Constitutional Court. According to Ferreira, “In the Italian marines case if India expected everyone to respect its courts then we expect the Portuguese courts to be respected too. We will not wait for Abu Salem to be assassinated, I want India to accept that the extradition treaty has been cancelled and it should return him. Its been almost 10 years that Salem is in India and there should have been some result to this. We will move the EU. The Portugal High Court, Supreme Court and Constitutional Court had cancelled the extradition (to India). What are the authorities waiting for?” Ferriera, who arrived in India on Sunday, met Salem after securing permission of the special TADA court and spoke to him for nearly two hours. This comes weeks after the attack Salem in Taloja Central Jail (TCJ) in Navi Mumbai wherein the state government ordered a high-level probe and suspended four policemen while the gangster’s lawyer is prepared to get him repatriated to Portugal. Salem’s Indian lawyer Saba Qureshi had earlier stated that they would approach Portugal’s government to seek Salem's repatriation from India. “One of the conditions of Salem's extradition was that he would be protected. This condition has been violated after the attack on him inside the jail. Now

Almost a month after the attack on gangster Abu Salem in Taloja Central Jail (TCJ) in Navi Mumbai, Salem`s Portuguese lawyer Manuel Luis Ferreira with Indian lawyer Saba Kureshi met Abu Salem, at the sessions court, on Monday. we plan to urge the concerned Portugal authorities to get him repatriated from India,” Qureshi had told mediapersons. While talking to media on Monday, Ferriera said, “Salem is very depressed after the attack and has decided to move European Union. We will move the EU as the Portugal government is not doing anything. We will request EU to direct the Portugal government to take some steps for execution of the cancellation of the extradition order. Salem’s cases in India were dragging without any conclusion whereas they should have reached their logical conclusion by now. Taking no decision is also a bad decision and major problem in the case is that there is no decision taken.” Salem had been extradited to India from Portugal after a long legal battle in November 2005 with his then girlfriend Monica Bedi. Salem is an accused in several cases, including the March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

he Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday seized 133 metric tonnes of Red Sanders hidden in 8 different containers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). The contraband, that has been valued around Rs. 55 Crore in the international market, was to be smuggled out of the country. The accused are however still at large and efforts are on to trace them. According to DRI officials, they raided the container yard at JNPT following a tip off and opened the 8 containers to find of Red Sanders. “Four containers were 20 feet while the other four were feet long. containers were declared to be carrying tiles and marbles while others had declared Onions as their contents. The original contents were swapped with the red sanders en route to the port,” said a DRI official. Officials said Sandalwood, exclusive to India, is found in the tropical forests bordering Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. They are in high demand
worldwide for their usage in manufacturing in medicines and other clinical drugs. “They are largely exported to South-East Asia and China. In this case however, we strongly suspect the destination to be China. JNPT is the hub of illegal exporting of Red Sanders,” explained a DRI source. The export of Red Sanders is prohibited by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to which India is a signatory. On June 14, the Navi Mumbai crime branch had seized Red Sanders worth Rs. 66 Lakhs in a warehouse in Uran. Also recently, 11 Chinese nationals were arrested at the Mumbai international airport while trying to smuggle out sandalwood.

s auto-rickshaws and taxis pull up outside the already crowded station area of Borivli (West), Clean-Up marshals can be seen maintaining a close watch upon passersby. This reporter witnessed Clean-Up marshals stop a trader carrying two large bags, while he was paying a rickshaw driver, grab him by his collar and drag him away. Holding a gutkha packet in his hand, one of the marshals claimed that the trader had thrown the gutkha packet while stepping out from the rickshaw. As the argument continued, the trader clarified to the marshals that he was not a gutkha eater, and it soon emerged that this was just a crooked trap laid by the marshals to illegally fine the trader. When the ADC inquired about the Clean-Up marshals with nearby stalls and shops, it was learnt that the false traps are a common practice. If a guy is well educated and can defend himself, he is let off, whereas the poor and the villagers coming to the city become easy and frightened targets.
stead of schools, colleges, gardens and markets, where cleanliness is required. A common sight can be witnessed at Marine Lines, where traders, some from outside Mumbai, alight and rush to the several markets in the area. Just as the merchant steps out of the station, he is accosted by at least four to five CleanUp marshals, who encircle him and demand a fine, even if he has not spat or thrown any garbage. The ploy works when the harassed victim just pays up because he has to rush to handle his business. At Dadar, another drama played itself out when Ak-
shay Singh, a PR professional, went to receive his friend at the station. He was punching in his suburban ticket when he saw his friend being dragged and pushed around by a lady Clean-Up marshal, who loudly claimed that he spat on the road. The friend, however, kept pleading innocence. To keep the peace, Akshay volunteered to pay the fine and asked lady Clean-Up marshal to come to police station as she had dragged his friend in front of all people. He threatened to register a complaint against her for publicly humiliating the friend. Surprisingly, she went on her knees and apologized for her behaviour.

However, an alert eye-witness, who was observing the trickery and overheard the entire conversation, followed the marshals and the victims. He came forward and told the supervisor that the marshals were lying as the victims had not thrown any packet on the platform.

fter creating a flutter in the Congress circle for some time the EGS Minister Nitin Raut has made it clear that he has not tendered his resignation from the cabinet. The corridor of power in the state witnessed high drama on Sunday night and Monday morning when a rumour of Raut resigning from the cabinet spread like wildfire. According to sources, Raut had tendered his resignation to the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Sunday at around 6 pm. After the cabinet meeting held on Sunday afternoon, Raut sent an SMS to all his cabinet colleagues saying, “I want to resign today. Pl guide me”. He then met the CM at around 6pm and put in his papers. However, yesterday while speaking to reporters, in Vidhan Bhavan the Minister categorically stated that he has not resigned. Raut’s resignation is being linked to the state cabinet’s refusal to regularize the encroachments made by his supporters on a public utility land in Bezonbagh area. The cabinet had met on Sunday afternoon, a day ahead of the monsoon session of the state legislature. Many proposals were discussed in this meeting including the Bezonbagh one. Ponder awhile... “A Parliament is nothing less than a big meeting of more or less idle people.” — Walter Bagehot
Congress has I its way with Food Security Bill T
HE Opposition parties’ objections to the Food Security Bill appear to be slowly dying down. The Congress has aggressively gone ahead with it, called chief minister only Congressruled states and decided food distribution will start on August 20, Rajiv Gandhi’s birthday. The Opposition parties were dead set against the ordinance in this regard but it is no longer making a noise about it. It has suggested that it wants to move a couple of amendments to the bill where the Monsoon Session of the Parliament begins on August 5. It is certain now the ordinance will be approved by the Opposition and the Food Security Bill that will come into being. The Congress had its way and the Opposition was in no way able to scuttle the move. The Opposition parties must have been quite worried when UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi called a meeting of chief ministers of Congress-ruled states. It must have realized then that it had no go, but to fall in line and approve a win that seeks to give foodgrains to over 67-crore people. The ordinance perhaps will be the first item in the Parliament’s Monsoon Session agenda. Evidently the Congress is not bothered about the success of the act. It cannot be unaware of the fact that implementation of the act is a formidable task. It has, however, achieved its objective. The act will help it in no small measure in getting huge support from voters. The Congress has in mind not only the 2014 Lok Sabha polls but also the elections in six states in November.

N the penultimate year of nearly onedecade rule by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government, I find the biggest casualty is the people’s confidence in political parties, particularly the ruling Congress. In fact, the public is so exasperated that it has come to believe that dishonesty and politics are synonymous and those who have come to politics have done so only to make money. I was aghast to find that many well-placed people have not contributed to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund because they suspect that the money given for the Uttarakhand victims would be used by the Congress in elections. I can understand the argument that the assistance is mismanaged, but the suspicion about the PM’s Fund should awaken the rulers to the extent that the people have lost faith in them. The scandals like the 2G Spectrum regarding the mobiles and the allotment of coal blocks to unknown persons have, no doubt, damaged the credibility of the Congress. But the inference that those in positions, to whichever party they belong, is a sad commentary on politicians.

them were allegedly planted by the police and none of it had been used for days. Assume that Ishrat and the others were terrorists. Does the police force have the right to kill them without proving in a law court that they were terrorists? If this rule is to apply, the killers of Mrs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi should have been shot dead in encounters instead of proceedings even in the Supreme Court. We should not have spent crores of rupees on the trial of Mohammad Kasab, who was hanged, and done away with him for the attacks on Mumbai. The food security bill which will subsidize food for 65 per cent of the population is a prey to suspicion. The government is to be

Judicial verdict Consequently, there is a question mark against any report or probe conducted by the government. Even a judicial verdict is taken with a pinch of salt. The fault is not that of the people, but the manner in which the affairs have been conducted since the seventies. Very little has been done to restore confidence. In fact, the official machinery is in disarray. Take the case of Ishrat Jahan encounter. The Home Ministry at the Centre and the state government had taken the stand that Ishrat, along with her three accomplices, were terrorists who were killed in an encounter with the police suspecting them to have a plan to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that it was a coldblooded murder. The agency found no evidence to involve Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Toiba which the Intelligence Bureau (IB) had done. Who does the public believe? Both the CBI and the IB are parts of the same government. The public is further confused because the CBI has alleged that Ishrat and her accomplices were picked up from different places and shot dead. The weapons they had on
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar blamed for introducing the measure through an ordinance when the parliament session has only three weeks away. (It has now been postponed to mid-August after the ordinance). Most political parties are in favour of the bill but want a legitimate discussion in parliament before it is enacted. The Congress prefers the route of ordinance on the plea that political parties, particularly the BJP, have not allowed parliament to function. This is true. But the ordinance too has to be passed by parliament. For that a consensus would be required. Why couldn’t the government bring about it before the ordinance? There is something in the allegation that the Congress eyes are fixed on the parliamentary elections which is due in May 2014. It is possible that a mid-term poll may take place in November or December. Such are the suspicions which have nullified the food security ordinance which would enable
Confucianism, a system of social, ethical philosophy O NE side of Confucianism was the affirmation of accepted values and norms of behavior in primary social institutions and basic human relationships. All human relationships involved a set of defined roles and mutual obligations; each participant should understand and conform to his/ her proper role. Starting from individual and family, people acting rightly could reform and perfect the society. The blueprint of this process was described in ‘The Great Learning’, a section of the Classic of Rituals: Only when things are investigated is knowledge extended; only when knowledge is extended are thoughts sincere; only when thoughts are sincere are minds rectified; only when minds are rectified are the characters of persons cultivated; only when character is cultivated are our families regulated; only when families are regulated are states well governed; only when states are well governed is there peace in the world.
roughly 850 million people of limited means to buy per kilo rice at Rs.3, wheat at Rs.2 and bajra for Rs.1. The case of CBI’s autonomy is yet another example worth dwelling on. People have no faith in the supervision by the three retired High Court judges. The suspicion is that the government would appoint pliable judges. Since the CBI will be under the government, any measure it takes fails to evoke faith. The other main political party, the BJP, is suspect because it is selling Modi thesis of Hindutva. The latest is the building of the Ram temple at the site where the Babri Masjid stood before its demolition. The party should realize that the religious card cannot be played again and again. The demand for temple and a uniform civil code are supposed to be parts of development, a camouflage for Hindutva. The party is as much engaged in power politics as the Congress is.
Confucius' ethical vision ran against the grain of the legalistic mind set of his day. Only under the Han Emperor Wu did Confucianism become accepted as state ideology and orthodoxy. From that time on the imperial state promoted Confucian values to maintain law, order, and the status quo. In late traditional China, emperors sought to establish
MATTER & SPIRIT village lectures on Confucian moral precepts and to give civic awards to filial sons and chaste wives. The imperial family and other notables sponsored the publication of morality books that encouraged the practice of Confucian values: respect for parents, loyalty to government, and keeping to one's place in society -- farmers should remain farmers, and practice the ethics of farming. This side of Confucianism was conservative, and
That the leftist parties have social justice and federalism on their agenda is to the liking of a preponderant majority. To their admiration, a convention of the leftist parties at Delhi last week reiterated the two points. Indeed, the Manmohan Singh government has made the rich richer and has made a mockery of political autonomy. Yet the CPI (M) was found wanting during their rule of 15 years in West Bengal. The Sachar Committee has said that the Muslim community in the state was the most backward in education (only 2.7 per cent). The CPI supported the authoritarian rule of Indira Gandhi during the emergency. Janata Dal (United) evokes hope to be a third alternative because its chief, Sharad Yadav, has said that his party will fight totalitarianism of communists and communalism of the BJP. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has shown in his rule that a government can rise above gimmicks. Rightly Nitish Kumar has given the National Investigation Agency to probe the Buddh Gaya bomb blasts. The nation’s problem is how to reignite the spirit of confidence and idealism. Alas, no political party, even in the states, comes up to that standard. Will the next election throw up such people is in the realm of conjecture. Persons like me are still optimistic that India would return to the path of values which it took after winning Independence. served to bolster established institutions and long-standing social divisions. There was, however, another side to Confucianism. Confucius not only stressed social rituals, but also humaneness. Ren, sometimes translated love or kindness, is not any one virtue, but the source of all virtues. The Chinese character literally represents the relationship between ‘two persons’, or co-humanity -- the potential to live together humanely rather than scrapping like birds or beasts. Ren keeps ritual forms from becoming hollow; a ritual performed with ren has not only form, but ethical content; it nurtures the inner character of the person, furthers his/ her ethical maturation. Thus if the ‘outer’ side of Confucianism was conformity and acceptance of social roles, the ‘inner’ side was cultivation of conscience and character. Cultivation involved broad education and reflection on one's actions. It was a lifetime commitment to character building carving and polishing the stone of one's character until it was a lustrous gem.

PRAN JAAYE, PAR SHAAN NA JAAYE IT is sad that veteran actor Pran is no more. He created ‘terror’ as a villain in more than 300 films and was used as a perfect ‘weapon’ by mothers against troublesome children. Women would tell their children that if they misbehaved Pran would be called to handle them! Such was his portrayal of villainy and the impact he created in the minds of the people through his acting prowess! A prominent landmark or a location in Mumbai must be named after this legendary actor. As they say, “Pran jaaye…par shaan na jayee”. May his soul rest in peace. — S. Krishna Kumar, Dombivli
I ATTENDED the wonderful actor Pran’s funeral, and realized that there was no importance given by Bolywood celebrities, except a few. However, most of his diehard fans, who are now in their 50s and 60s, could not catch a last glimpse of him. I think fans who are senior citizens should have been allowed to see this veteran superstar for the last time, primarily because they were the actor’s true fans who had made him the talk of the town. Our culture and emotions make it

IT is welcome news that the Academic Council of the Mumbai University has authorized the extension of divisions for various degree college courses in several colleges in the city (‘Room for more’, ADC, July 12). The ADC deserves to be complimented for highlighting the problem of overcrowding in classrooms to the extent of accommodating almost 140 students in a room meant for only 75, which is quite like travelling by our local trains during peak hours. PRAN SAHIB is no more but his legacy will live forever. The success of an actor lays in his portrayal of characters which allows people to even consider these characters to be real. While he was despised for being a villain on screen, he was a thorough gentleman in reality. In 1985, I had the opportunity to interview him at his residence for ‘Madhuri’ magazine. When asked, he narrated his early life like a child asked to speak about his favourite food, leaving me mesmerised by his simplicity and love for his craft. When I told him that people fear naming their children after him, he laughed. He even introduced me to his family like we had known each other for many years. Pran was an avid cricket follower and during breaks in his shoots, he would often listen to cricket commentary. No more freebies
IT is heartening to learn of the Supreme Court’s directive to the Election Commission to examine the ‘freebies’ promised by various political parties in their ‘Election Manifesto’, and to put a limit to such generous offers. There is a desperate need to streamline this highly objectionable forum, as the offers of writing-off bank loans and other debts are not actually ‘freebies’. A sizeable share of the money diverted by political parties as part of these ‘freebies’ is part of the funds accrued mainly through the collection of taxes . Stop violating nature MAN-MADE disasters are taking place primarily because we go against nature. Clear cut guidelines with regard to eco-friendly measures were overlooked and sanctions were accorded to build concrete structures on the bank of rivers. Despite the hue and cry by NGOs and other organisations no one is ready to heed the warnings and leave no stone unturned to make money at the every opportunity. FAREWELL LEGEND: Veteran Bollywood actor Pran will be remembered for his memorable performances and dialogues. a great actor but because he was a great human being. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai
IN the death of veteran actor Pran, the Indian film industry has lost a very talented actor and star. Between the 1950s and 1980s, no successful film could be made in India, without him as a villain or a character artist. It goes to the credit of his prodigious histrionics that he was the most dreaded villain on screen, and yet transformed himself to fit of action and if required public Participation in important projects needs to be accepted. We can learn mucg from the deluge, devastation and destruction in Uttarakhand. Instead of going all out and promoting projects for personal gains, the planning officials should think about people and their welfare also. It is time to take a step in the right direction and plan for proper action. — Anandambal Subbu, Khargar
THE sad demise of the 93-year old iconic baddie of Hindi Cinema Pran, has orphaned the Hindi film industry. He was not only a villain par excellence, but a very good human being. His villainy had a depth that none could imitate. His role in Zanjeer as a Pathan, Sharaabi and Purab Aur Paschim speaks volumes. There are in fact no words to express one’s appreciation of his performance. If being hated for make-believe acts amounts to successful on screen villainy, then Pran set the benchmark at the highest level. In his death he has left a vacuity very intricate to be filled in. May almighty God rest his noble soul in eternal peace and allow his bereaved family members to deal with this irreparable loss. RIP Pran Saab. You will ever be remembered. — K.V. Raman, Malad

He has given immense pride to the Hindi Film Industry with his iconic roles and popular dialogues. He was a great actor, thorough gentleman and the nicest person. muting hours. Even children are made to spend a stressful day learning both at schools and coaching classes, with exams every other day. Why are these coaching classes thriving? Are students not taught at school, or are teachers shirking their responsibility, thus forcing students to join classes. Most students including girls stay late at these classes, thus risking their security and their health in the long run. The government should therefore close down schools and colleges if they want to encourage classes, or ban these classes altogether. Team India: The Super Kings CONGRATULATIONS to team India for following their Champions trophy win in England with a brilliant tri-series victory in the Caribbean. Captain Dhoni is known to finish games in style as he powered team India past the Sri Lankan total with massive hits to score sixteen runs in 4 deliveries, when it looked like everything was lost for us. M.S. Dhoni is one of the top cricketers in the game today and loves challenges. He leads from the front and with example which is the hallmark of champion players. India fought brilliantly in the Caribbean after losing the first two games of the series and winning the next three and subsequently the series. Youngsters came to the front when the team needed help as Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and the rest put up a brilliant show in most games, which translated into regular wins for our team.

smoothly with an imposing score of 171 for 2 in the 38th over and progressing well to touch the 300 run mark. However, everything went awry as Sangakkara (71) was holed out by Vinay Kumar. That was the beginning of the slide as 8 wickets fell like nine pins for 30 runs. Ashwin, as the star performer, delivered telling blows, taking two wickets in an over and dismissing Sri Lanka for 201 in the end. Ashwin is a force to reckon with and contains the run rate even during power play. Ravindra Jadeja hastened the end with his tight bowling leading to a haul of 4 wickets for 23 runs. In all, the Indian bowlers bowled with a plan, trapping the Sri Lankan lower order batsmen in the web of spin cum pace bowling. ‘I want to do something crazy.’ You haven’t figured out what you want from life and you’re trapped in a job that you hate. You have this yearning to do something drastic to your life such as move to another country, change your career altogether, go back to studying again or then even get bald and become a monk (true story). All of a sudden, all these options seem so much more tempting than the life that you are trying to wade through. ‘But should I do it?’ As mentioned in the previous point, you have so many appealing alternatives in your head, but you are indecisive about all of them. In fact, indecisiveness has started making frequently scary appearances in your life. You have the freedom to take up anything you want since you are young, but you’re scared that whatever you pick up will not rise up to your expectations and you’ll not find what you are craving for. This would bring you back to square one. ‘I wish I had never grown up.’ This is the most common desire that the millennial generation faces. Constant comparisons are made between your current life and school/college life. And being bombarded with the news of your friends taking leaps in their lives, you might be left wondering what exactly you’re doing with your own.

Here are their two-bits: “I think I've become extremely boring and I'm not even ashamed to admit it. I no longer enjoy going out clubbing and prefer staying home on weekends and sleeping instead. My Facebook feed is full of pictures from my friends who are married, engaged, pregnant and they're all my age. Though that is annoying, I actually do like being 25 and think that age is just a number.” —- Samreen Samad, 25 “I regularly question myself about where I am in life. Add to that the nagging thought about marriage at the back of my mind and that makes me think that I suffer from quarter life crises. I am happy that there is no pressure from my parents on any front though and I plan to deal with it by taking each day as it comes.” — Faye Rodrgiues, 25 “A few reasons I feel I am going through quarter life crises is that all my friends are in proper careers and I feel that I’m adrift. Also, the fact that I am single right now too adds to that. At the same time, I feel that most ‘reasons’ are just excuses; when don't things don't go your way, or exactly the way you imagined, you get low and you try and find a reason for it. Hello Fatty! >> Don’t shy away from eating a little dark chocolate. It will actually help you eat less by reducing your hunger
3. olive oil

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 16, 2013
« know more: Skimmed milk vS. whole milk Would you pick whole milk over skimmed milk? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why you should consider it
Oil is considered to be fattening and because of this several people tend to avoid it altogether. However, olive oil is very rich in cancer-fighting polyphenols and monounsaturated fats. It also contains high levels of adiponectin, which helps break down fats in the body. So, instead of cutting back on oil, switch to a healthy oil such as olive oil.
4. dArk ChoColAte We all know that dark chocolate is good for your heart, but did you know that it also keeps weight gain at bay. Dark chocolate contains cocoa butter, a source of digestion-slowing stearic acid. Since dark chocolate takes more time to process, it staves off hunger and helps you lose weight.
5. seeds Eating the right amount of seeds (about a handful) can help you lose or maintain weight by satiating your appetite and stabilising your blood sugar levels. Try flax, chia (sabja), hemp, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Don’t forget the seed butters too!
6. Butter Butter is a natural fat that men and women have eaten for thousands of years. Fat, like that found in butter, is necessary in order to help your body absorb several healthy nutrients. Without fat, your body can’t absorb carotenoids — powerful disease-fighting antioxidants found in colourful vegetables — or fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K. So, go ahead and eat butter (in moderation) without feeling guilty.
7. sour CreAm All of us have been told to avoid sour cream or to eat the light version of it at some point or the other. The percentage of fat in sour cream is high, but the total amount isn’t. A serving of sour cream (2tbsp) contains half the amount of calories that’s in a single tablespoon of mayonnaise.
8. CoConut oil
It’s time to dispel the belief that fat makes you fat. It’s the sugar, gluten and other chemicals in our food that are the real culprits. Tejasvi Desai tells you what foods might not make sense to you, but they do, to your body
1. AvoCAdos Avocados are called “butter pears” because of their high fat content. But, most of the fat is monounsaturated, which is why it is hearthealthy. Moderation is essential, since a medium avocado boasts of 30g of fat. Try substituting avocados for butter or cream cheese, or replace the mayo in your sandwich with slices of avocado.
2. eggs Eggs are an inexpensive and easy source of protein. We often think that egg whites are a healthier option over whole eggs because they contain less fat, and while it’s true that the egg yolk contains some fat, it is also packed with important nutrients. One whole egg contains 5g of fat, but only 1.5g of it is saturated. Eggs are also a good source of choline, an important B vitamin that helps regulate your brain, nervous system and cardiovascular system.
Though high in saturated fat, coconut oil is made up of medium-chain fatty acids that have been shown to actually speed up your metabolism. Coconut oil is also associated with lowering blood sugar levels, which also helps in weight loss.
9. FAtty Fish The term “fatty fish” may sound unappealing, but these are the tastiest and healthiest foods from the sea. Oily fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel and trout are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which are unlike the bad saturated fat you find in most meats. However, health benefits from fish are cancelled out if you deep-fry them.
10. nuts Your best bets for nutrition are almonds, walnuts and pistachios. Even though they contain a lot of fat, it is all healthy fat. Almonds are the richest in vitamin E; walnuts contain a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid; and pistachios have lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids that are important for eye health. Nut eaters are less likely to develop type II diabetes and have a reduced risk of heart disease.
We’ve grown up thinking that whole milk is fatty and high in calories and because of this, skimmed milk became the obvious dairy of choice. It’s true that whole milk contains more calories and fat, but restricting calories is not the only way to lose weight. And, if you’re worried about the cholesterol content in whole milk, don’t — as long as you drink a regular amount and don’t go overboard, milk isn’t going to add to your problems. The fat content in whole milk is double that of most skimmed milks, is still negligible on the fat scale. Skimmed milk is definitely less nutritious, which is why whole milk may be a better option. The cream in whole milk is what contains the vitamins A, D, E and K, which are important to get all the benefits that come with drinking milk such as keeping your bones healthy and fighting infections. And that’s not it, skimmed milk is a also a bit tasteless. If all this wasn’t enough reason, the Archives of Disease in Childhood recently performed studies that suggest that children that drink skimmed milk can actually develop obesity faster as they grow older. If you feed children nutritious milk, they’ll crave less sugary, fatty food and even for adults, whole milk is much more nutritious.
Closer home
Indian nutritionists however, haven’t caught on to the study yet and still recommend skimmed milk. Vinod Channa, celebrity fitness expert, says, “I recommend skimmed milk because it is low in fat, cholesterol and calories. So, it makes for a good choice for those who are watching their weight. Full fat milk contains milkfat and is high on cholesterol. It also contains nutrients such as protein and calcium and fatty acids which is good for brain development. But, I would pick skimmed milk.” So, what choice do you make? We’ll leave that up to you to decide.

Do you find the gym with its dumbbells, pull-up bars and treadmills too boring? Your neighbourhood playground could remedy your boredom. Dev Goswami tells you how
W
henever you look at a swing or slide, what is the first thing that comes to mind? We’re betting that most of you will recall happy childhood memories. However, what if we were to tell you that those slides and swings that you spent much of your childhood on, could actually turn out to be fantastic workout equipment? Find out how you can get a full-body workout at your neighborhood playground.
Warm up If the park has a jogging track, it’s the perfect area for a warm up. Just jog for a couple of laps and your muscles should be ready. In case there isn’t a jogging track, you can jog from your home to the playground.
LoWer body Slides and park benches can work great for lower body workouts. Below are a few exercises you can try: Ladder step-up: Stand behind a slide, facing the ladder. With your right leg, step on the highest rung that you can reach. Bring your left leg up, next to your right. Now, climb down one leg at a time and repeat with the other leg. side lunge: Stand at the bottom of the slide with your back towards it. Keep your hands on your waist, bend your left leg backwards and place it on the edge of the slide. Now, bend your right knee till your thigh is parallel to the ground. Return to the starting position and repeat the exercise with both legs.
upper body Doing upper body workouts in the playground is more convenient in comparison to
the lower body workouts. We tell you how: monkey bar pull-up: In case the playground doesn’t have a monkey-bar, you can use the bar which holds the swings. As far as the exercise is concerned, do we really need to explain? Switch between an overhead and underhand grip for best results. In case you can’t do pull-ups at all, build your strength by hanging from the bar for 30 seconds and/ or by doing push-ups.
Time To
play
>> All you have to do is make your way towards the nearest playground to bring some freshness into your exercise regime
sWing roW: Stand behind a swing and grab the chain with both your hands. Lean back till you body is at a 45° angle to the ground. Now use your arms, shoulders and chest to bring your torso toward your hands. Repeat at least 10 times. Once you’re experienced enough, you can lean back further to increase the intensity.
Core These core exercises are a little tricky to perform as far your balance is concerned. So, be careful while doing them: swing knee tucks: Place your palms on the ground, keep your hands shoulder-width apart and rest your feet firmly on the seat of a swing (similar to a push-up position). Now, bend your knees and pull the swing ahead, so that your knees come close to your chest. Ensure that your hands are steady and do not move much. sLide sit up: Sit on top of a slide and lock your feet behind the top rung. Lie all the way back as far as you can go or till your torso is on the slide (you might want to put a rug beneath, so that the edges of the slide don’t cut in to you). Now do a good, old sit up/ crunch.

>> What you refer to as common cold might just turn out to be a cubicle cold because of your workplace conditions

Afternoon Despatch & Courier
« Know More:
Middle east plague A virus in Saudi Arabia has health officials worried about its impact, especially if it goes global. Dev Goswami tells you more In a disturbing development that is reminiscent of the past, health officials and authorities are concerned about the threat of a virus spreading across the world. In the 14th century, ‘Black Death’ exploded in Arabia and an estimated third of the population was killed. It spread across the Islamic world through infected religious pilgrims and the same is feared of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) that was first discovered in June last year.
Why is it so serious?
CubiCle Colds If you’re sneezing and sniffling through the year no matter how well you take care of yourself, you may want to point a finger at your workplace, says Rhea Dhanbhoora
W
ith our fast-paced, career oriented lives, getting a blocked nose and sniffling through the day doesn’t seem like much of a tragedy. So what if you have sneezing fits almost every other day and your nose is runny at least once a month? After all, you can’t expect anything less if you’ve been holed up in an air conditioned room for hours on end daily. ENT consultant, Dr. Ritu Sheth tells us that this type of cold is appropriately called a cubicle cold and that they are becoming increasingly common in the city, especially amongst people with desk jobs. Read on to find out what Dr. Ritu has to say about cubicle colds.
Why are they caused at Work? What makes a cubicle cold specifically ‘work based’? For one thing, in a city like Mumbai, every time you step into an air conditioned office, the temperature fluctuates from possibly extremely warm and humid, to suddenly cold and relatively dry. It may seem like a relief but the constant change of temperatures (especially if you step in and out of work often) leads to dormant viruses in your nose getting active again. Not to mention all the stale air that’s being circulated through the office, polluting the air and causing allergens to pop up which results in you sneezing and sniffling
recognising a cubicle cold “Cubicle colds are prevalent all through the year but they are generally more common during the summer and monsoon,” says Dr. Ritu. Although symptoms such as blocked and stuffy noses are signs of the common cold, if they seem aggravated when you’re at work it’s probably a sign of a cubicle cold. Dr. Ritu tells us that some people can experience a dry cough and persistent sneezing for months on end, while others are affected merely for a few weeks. So, how does she know when a patient is
Quick tips
Dr. Ritu advises us to remember these quick tips next time you want to avoid a cubicle cold: l The air conditioning settings should ideally be set at around 24°C, even during summer. The temperature should be at a comfortable level so that it’s not too extreme a switch from the temperature outdoors. l It’s advisable not to take over-the-counter drugs and consult an ENT specialist if you persistently develop a stuffy or runny nose as soon as you enter office. l It is important to keep yourself hydrated. Airing out the rooms by opening the windows once in a while would also help.
suffering from a cubicle cold? “When I ask for the type of environment they work in, most people (90% of the cases) tell me that they work in cold, air conditioned environments for prolonged hours. People who already have an allergenic tendency of getting a cold will have more severe symptoms. Their eyes will water and they may experience mild to severe headaches.”
keep them aWay You can’t leave office to avoid them and we are sure it is not possible to turn off the air conditioning. Other than increasing your immunity, there are a few precautions you can request your office to take in order to keep yourself from getting a cubicle cold. “The air conditioning vents and filters need to be cleaned on a regular basis. Besides that, carpets and curtains need to be regularly maintained to reduce microbial content. If the air conditioner vents are not serviced, they become a breeding ground for fungal growth. The spores from these fungi get dispersed by the air conditioner blast in an enclosed office space. As the air is constantly re-circulated, slowly and steadily the spore count increases,” says Dr. Ritu. If they don’t agree to your suggestions, perhaps you could show them this article. After all, no one wants an office full of sick employees!
The concern of health officials stems from the fact that this year, millions of Muslims from around the world will visit religious sites such as Mecca, Medina and other Saudi Arabian holy sites. Further cause for worry comes from the fact that very little is known about MERS. It is still not understood as to how the disease is transmitted and even less is known regarding its origins. All that is known is that MERS has a mortality rate of 55% which is higher than its close cousin — severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Just like SARS, MERS spreads through close contact, shared medical instruments and coughing. Once inside your body the virus sparks a series of reactions that will destroy your lung functions. And even if you do survive MERS, you will need to undergo years of rehabilitation.
What is being done?
As far as containing the spread of the disease is concerned, the United Nations has commended Saudi Arabia for its efforts. However, neither the government nor the World Health Organisation have placed any explicit travel regulations as of now. Some countries, such as the Philippines, have started thermal scanning of immigrants coming from Saudi Arabia. Nepal, meanwhile has asked hospitals to adopt precautionary measures for treating patients with respiratory problems. MERS has been proven difficult to control even by the most advanced and well-funded hospitals and there isn’t any vaccine, drug or diagnostic test available yet. It is obvious to expect that more concrete steps will soon be taken, however, the threat of this disease, contained to small numbers so far, spreading worldwide is quite worrisome.

dear Barbara, I prefer applying sunscreen right before I get out of my car because applying it before and then driving doesn’t make sense to me. I always make it a point to keep a bottle in my car. Is it okay to store sunscreen or a lip balm with SPF in a car’s glove compartment? — reena george, lokhandwala dear reena, No, it is not advisable for you to keep your sunscreen and lip balm in the glove compartment. Once the car gets heated by the sun, the raised temperature can cause the sunscreen’s active ingredients to degrade in the container itself. It will also cause your lip balm to melt. When you apply a degraded sunscreen or balm to your skin, you’re not getting the SPF that’s indicated on the bottle. In fact, your sunscreen will be reduced to nothing more than a thick moisturiser. So, avoid storing your sunscreen and balm in your car. dear Barbara, I have been getting colds very frequently in the last few months and I am trying to find the reason for the recurrence. he monsoon brings with it several problems. And dandruff is a major one. The reason we’re focusing on it this season is because the humidity in the air increases your chances of developing dandruff during the monsoon. You need to take special care of your hair this season to avoid an itchy and flaky scalp and make sure you use a good shampoo to get rid of dandruff. It can be caused by very dry or very oily hair, so you have to make sure your shampoo is mild enough not to damage your scalp, but strong enough to rid it of dandruff. Although there are several products in the market to help you battle the problem, here are a few that we recommend:

Plus, it can’t re-infect you as your body has built up antibodies against the virus. But, if you had strep throat along with a cold then it’s another story. Strep throat bacteria survive for much longer than common cold. So, throw out the lipstick or you may risk getting re-infected.

Every district to have I-T office by 2013 N
EW DELHI: Every district in the country will have at least one Income-Tax office once the ambitious cadre restructuring of the department is implemented by the end of this year. The proposal was discussed at length and approved at a recent meeting of top I-T and Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) officials as they sat down to plan the rollout of the recent government decision which sanctioned a large-scale cadre restructuring of the department and created 20,751 posts, in various ranks, in the I-T department. The CBDT, the apex policy making body of the tax department, has put its stamp of approval on the decision. "The effort will be to create an I-T office in every district of India. This would not only reduce the hardship of taxpayers residing in mofussil and small towns but also widen the tax base bringing in more revenue to the government kitty," a top official privy to the development said.

A month after U'khand disaster, 5,748 still missing; not to be declared dead yet: CM
D
EHRADUN: The deadline for locating 5,748 people still missing in the Uttarakhand disaster ended on Monday, exactly a month after the catastrophe, but Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said they will not be declared dead yet. Bahuguna, however, said the process of paying monetary relief of Rs.5 lakh each to the kin of those dead and
missing in the flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains that struck the hill state on June 15 will commence from Tuesday. He also said the mission to trace the missing will continue, reports PTI. But if the missing persons are found, the family will have to return the relief money, he said at a joint news conference with Union Min-
ister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla. When asked whether the missing are being presumed dead, Bahuguna said, "This is hoping against hope but we can't declare them dead." Setting a deadline, the Chief Minister had said last week that those who are still missing will be presumed dead if they remain untraced
till July 15. Out of Rs.5 lakh to be given to the next of kin of the missing, Rs.3.5 lakh will be paid by the Centre and the rest by the respective state governments. "After tabulation of lists of missing persons received from other states and the ones available with us a total of 5,748 persons are missing till date out of which 934 are from Uttarakhand," he said.

‘Over 55 pc adolescent girls, boys suffering from anaemia’ N
EW DELHI: Contrary to popular perception that only the fairer sex suffers from anaemia, over 55 per cent of both adolescent girls and boys are anaemic in the country, according to National Family Health Survey 3 data. "It is a myth that only girls suffer from anaemia. According to the NFHS 3 data, over 55 per cent of both adolescent girls and boys are anaemic," said Anuradha Gupta, Additional Secretary and Mission Director of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). "Anaemia in adolescent girls enhances risk of preterm delivery and having babies with low birth weight. These babies are more likely to be ill and not reach the age of one year. It is esti-
mated that anaemia is the underlying cause for 20-40 per cent of maternal deaths," Gupta said. Explaining further she said that worm infestation, caused mainly due to open deification, poor sanitation and poor water quality, also causes anaemia. Anaemia can affect physical and cognitive development in both boys and girls and their intelligent quotient. These even make adolescents prone to infection and lead to other serious diseases. Talking about the initiative, she said under the programme all adolescent children in 6 to 12th standard at government and government aided/ municipal schools will be given a Iron Folic Acid (IFA) tablets once a week under the direct ob-
servation of teachers, and Albendazole twice a year for deworming.
Further, the adolescent practises for increasing iron boys and girls will be in- intake and about the signififormed of the correct dietary cance of preventing worm infestation and encourage adoption of correct hygiene practises including use of footwear to prevent worm infestation. Out of school adolescent girls in the age of 10-19 years will also be provided with the tablets free of cost under the Rajiv Gandhi Programme Scheme for the Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (SABLA) through the Anganwadi centres. Commenting on the recent reports of children taking ill after consuming IFA tablets, Gupta said that nausea, vomiting or pain in abdomen are some common side-effects which will are temporary. But the in long time it will help these women
in handling the disease. The progress of the programme will be monitored by the State Health Department at state level. The state WIFS Advisory Committee will include officers from Health, Education and Women and Child Developments departments. In the same way, District WIFS advisory committee will monitor the progress of the programme at district level. The ministry has allocated Rs 135 crore for this project. With this programme, the Health Ministry aims to target 13 crore adolescents in the country. The programme would be officially launched in Karnataka on July 17 and all the states will be implementing the programme henceforth.

Delivers Above Muted Expectations; Upgrade To Hold: Infosys’ 1QFY14 revenue beat expectations led by healthy on-site volume growth, signifying good project starts. Higher employee utilisation rate and rupee depreciation offset the impact of residual wage hikes, leading to flattish margins. This aided net profit to rise 5.7%/2.1% above our/consensus estimates, respectively. While the management continues to be cautious regarding the business environment, we believe key positive signs have emerged over the past couple of quarters, notably a strong YoY increase in on-site volume and rise in employee utilisation rate. We expect Infosys to start showing more consistency in its results going forward, given the above-stated positive factors. We believe the street has adjusted to the “higher revenue growth at the cost of margins” theme that Infosys will have to focus on and do not expect this to impact the valuation. Healthy on-site volume growth, utilisation rate good signs, upgrade to Hold: Key positive signs have emerged over the past two quarters, notably a strong YoY increase in on-site volume and a rise in employee utilisation rate. We expect Infosys to start showing more consistency in its results going forward, given the above-stated positive factors. We believe the street has adjusted to the “higher revenue growth at the cost of margins” theme that Infosys will have to focus on and do not expect this to impact the valuation. We have upgraded the stock to Hold from Sell with a revised TP of Rs 2,860 (Rs 2,400 earlier) owing to a slight rise in our EPS estimates and a higher PE multiple of 14.5x FY15E EPS (12.5x FY15E EPS earlier).
ICICI Direct calls a ‘Buy’ on Shoppers Stop CMP: Rs. 377 Target Rs. 435
We met the management of Shoppers Stop (SSL). The company believes that quality real estate will be difficult to acquire, going forward. Hence, it is continuing its expansion plan despite the grim economic situation. SSL has added ~17 departmental stores in FY12 and FY13, and plans to add about eight to nine stores each year for the next three years (YTDFY14 – six stores added already). On the HyperCity front, store addition is likely to be restricted to about two/year as the focus remains on first making the format profitable and then pressing the growth button. The management expects to add ~1.4 million sq ft over the next three years. The departmental stores are doing fairly well with stores in existence for more than a year operating at 7-8% EBITDA margins. As we have repeatedly said in the past, the turnaround of HyperCity remains the key monitorable. We maintain BUY on Shoppers Stop with a target of Rs 435. All eyes on HyperCity; departmental stores perform well; maintain BUY: While it is business as usual for departmental stores, the losses of the HyperCity segment continue to dent the overall performance. The management aims to achieve EBITDA and PAT level break even in FY14E and FY15E, respectively. Bearing in mind the long term prospects, we maintain BUY rating on Shoppers Stop with a target price of Rs 435.
Anand Rathi calls a ‘Buy’ on Lovable Lingerie CMP: Rs. 271 Target Rs. 343
Key takeaways from management meet Slowdown in discretionary spends: Lovable is experiencing a shrinking in its premium (>Rs 350) lingerie products. Higher inflation and slowing GDP growth have led consumers to downtrade, and average realizations have dropped 5-7%. To retain customers and maintain volumes, the company has introduced a range of products ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 350. As the slowdown is more prominent in urban areas, Lovable is facing hurdles in driving volumes (~80% of its revenues arise in urban India). Major capex and business re-structuring largely over: In FY2-13 major capex of Rs 312m was completed. The company does not visualise any major capex for at least two years if volume growth continues at ~10%. The national launch of Daisy Dee and the restructuring of Lovable’s distribution is complete. We believe the benefit of the aggressive investing in building strengths over the past two years would be reaped in FY14 as well as in FY15. Our take: We value the stock at Rs 343 at a PE of 20x Sep’14e earnings. Stable cotton prices as well as the 6% price hikes in Dec’12 would help to a 19% earnings CAGR over FY13-15. Also, we expect other income to be higher in FY14 than in FY13. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

nflation rose to 4.86 per cent in June, driven mainly by rising prices of food articles, especially vegetables including onion. Inflation based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) had stood at 4.70 per cent in May. In June, 2012, it was 7.58 per cent. As per official data released yesterday, WPI inflation in the food articles category rose to 9.74 per cent, driven mainly by price rise in onion, cereals and rice. The rate of price rise in food articles, which has a 14.34 per cent share in the WPI basket, was 8.25 per cent in
May. Inflation in onion shot up by 114 per cent in June, from 97.40 per cent in the previous month. Vegetables prices too went up by 16.47 per cent during the month, from 4.85 per cent in May. It was () 9.05 per cent in April. Inflation in the manufactured items category, however, declined to 2.75 per cent in June from 3.11 per cent in May. The non-food articles category, which include fibre, oil seeds and minerals, saw a sharp rise in inflation to 7.57 per cent, from 4.88 per cent in May.
the prices of non-administered fuels such as petrol, which adjust quickly to global price changes. It will either put upward pressure on prices of administered items (such as diesel, LPG) or on their subsidy bill. Both have adverse consequences: the former raises inflation and the latter, fiscal deficit. Given the government’s resolve to tame fiscal deficit, administered fuel prices are more likely to be to be raised. Other imported commodities such metals and edible oils too will witness rising inflation. Non-food manufacturing inflation slipped to a 42 month low of 2.0 per cent, while CCII (CRISIL Core Inflation Indicator) was at a 45 month low in June. Demand pressures will remain weak, but we could see some lift in core inflation. With a weak currency, imported costs of production will go up and eventually businesses might have to pass them on to the consumers. These developments seriously challenge the RBI’s aggressive year-end target of 5 per cent WPI inflation. “If the rupee averages Rs 58 per US$ in 2013-14, WPI inflation could rise to 6.0 per cent, as compared to our baseline call of 5.3 per cent. No action from the RBI may be the best action in this situation. Expect no rate cut on 30th July,” concludes Crisil.

Government Must Go Ahead With Divestment
Regardless of volatility in the stock market, the government must aggressively go ahead with its disinvestment plan and offload stakes in blue-chip PSUs to strengthen the economy, industry body Assocham said today. “The best thing is to go and sell the minority stake in some of the best-performing PSUs which will also revive faith of the retail investors which has touched the lowest in the recent past,” co-Chairman of Assocham’s capital market council Jagannadham Thunuguntla said here. The sale of shares in PSUs such as Coal India, Indian Oil Corporation and BHEL may be a good way to attract global money.
Incidentally, the investigations did not reveal any prima facie evidence of money laundering. “However, any conclusive inference in this regard can be drawn only by an end to end investigation of the transactions by tax and enforcement agencies” said the RBI. Based on the findings of the scrutiny, the Reserve Bank issued a show cause notice to each of these banks, in response to which the individual banks submitted written replies. After considering the facts of each case and individual bank’s reply, as also, personal submissions, information submitted and documents furnished, the Reserve Bank came to the conclusion that some of the violations were substantiated and warranted imposition of monetary penalty.

A KUCHIPUDI RECITAL KRISHNA AND THE WOMEN,
25
A
By Vijay Shanker
s part of their Umang series, National Centre for the Performing Arts presented a Kuchipudi recital by talented danseuse Chandralekha Ratheesh at the Little Theatre. The performance was noteworthy for its flamboyant and spontaneous style of presentation, expressions and for its technical expertise. The programme portrayed the lives of the three women who played a significant role in the life of Lord Krishna, namely mother Yasoda, Radhika and Satyabhama. The items performed reflected the character sketch and the inter-relationship of Lord Krishna with these women. The Krishna Sabdam ‘Swami Ra Ra’ depicts as to how the heroine entices her Lord by applying sandalwood on his hands and offering him beetle leaves (paan) and ultimately portrays the grandeur and the power of the Lord. In Purandaradasa Kirtana ‘Jagadhodharana’, the ‘vatsalya bhava’ comes to the forefront as mother Yasoda relates to child Krishna and is astounded to see the ‘Vishwarupadarshanam’ in the little mouth of Krishna. Chandralekha performed these numbers with sincere and innate quality of expressions. Jaydeva Ashtapadi Radhika Krishna incorporated the joyous moments of union and the pangs of separation as well. While Krishna’s most beautiful and proud wife Satyabhama was depicted in the number Bhama Kalapam, it was Chandralekha who concluded the performance with the composition by Othukaudu, and namely Marakata and the dancer received fine applause from the audience while she danced the Tarangam, balancing on the rim of the brass plate. It was a truly enjoyable performance.

t so happens in the field of music that an able and meritorious student brings fame to his teacher. Ulhas Kashalkar, one of the most sought after classical vocalists on the contemporary scene, is a pupil of the late Gajananrao Joshi. Joshi was known to a limited circle of musicians and music lovers. Thanks to Kashalkar, his name is now familiar all over the country and even to the lovers of Indian music abroad. Joshi first trained in the Gwalior style and later also learned the Jaipur and Agra gharana. He was not only a singer but also a front ranking violinist who engaged the musicians of the stature of Ravi Shankar and Vilayat Khan in jugalbandi encounters. A guided listening session of his recordings was held at the Godrej Dance Theater under the joint auspices of the NCPA and the Indian Musicological Society. B
harat Jadhav is the present ruling star on the Marathi film scene and his new starrer ‘Fekam Fak’ gives him a lot of scope to prove his talent which he does with aplomb, though the film resembles Jim Carrey’s ‘Liar Liar’ to a large extent. Gopi (Bharat Jadhav) lives in a chawl with his parents (Vijoo Khote and Sanjivani Jadhav) and sister Hema. He is on the lookout for a good job but has the bad habit of making up stories and crying wolf. This habit ultimately leaves him in a predicament when his sister Hema is murdered and he is the main suspect. The first
half is a little slack and is all about Gopi’s comic antics and his love for his neighbor Sneha (Ruchita Jadhav). The second half however, is racy and is about Bharat trying to find out his sister’s murderer. The film is a tad boring in the first half but is entertaining after the interval. Bharat delivers a good performance as usual while Ruchita Jadhav looks good and acts well. Mangesh Desai is a good surprise act while Varad Chavan looks handsome and plays the meanie to the tee. Vijay Chavan, Abhijjeet Chavan, Deepjyoti Naik, Vijoo Khote, Sanjeevani Jadhav support well. Music by Bharat Balwalli is a good effort.

Unique song for ‘Duniyadari’!
‘Duniyadari’ releasing on July 19 is an astonishing love story of youth, love, sacrifice, passion and values with college life of the 1970s as the backdrop. Ankush Chaudhari, Swapnil Joshi, Sai Tamhankar,
Jitendra Joshi, Urmila Kanetkar, Richa Pariyalli, Varsha Usgaonkar, Uday Tikekar, Sushant Shelar, Uday Sabnis are all part of the film. However what is unique is that the title song of the film has been sung by 11 leading artists including Sachin Pilgaonkar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sumit Raghavan and Swapnil Joshi.
Ganpati’s blessings For Bharat Jadhav
Bharat Jadhav, who stars in Kedar Shinde’s ‘Shrimant Damodarpant’ releasing soon, sought the blessings of Dagdu Sheth Ganpati’s in his film attire, dressed as a Maratha warrior. A huge crowd gathered after the locals heard about Bharat’s presence leaving him with a tough time facing his fans.

UMBAI: State junior and sub junior champion Ishpreet Singh Chadha overcame Zubin Leninwala of Indian Snooker Academy to clinch the title, in the NSCI-BSAM All India Under25 Snooker Challenge 1, at the National Sports Club of India, Worli. Leninwala frittered away the many advantages he had from the start including substantial leads and paid the price for missed opportunities. On the other hand, Chadha, not at his best, seized his chances and dominated what could have been a close contest had Leninwala remained on cue. Shelar was proud to be among so many great players. “I’m not exactly a sporting person. But I’m honoured to be felicitating these great players, including Narayan,” he said. He later stated that he would take it up with the concerned authorities to ensure that Narayan and the other players get their due recognition. The tall lanky Narayan was also unhappy with the slide in the fortunes of Mumbai football. IN BRIEF Magical Mickelson win Scottish Open, all set for British Open
CASTLE STUART (Scotland): Phil Mickelson could not have asked for a better warm-up for his challenge at the Open Championships as he claimed his first victory in a regular European Tour event at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open here. Mickelson won the title, thanks to a typically magical chip on the first extra hole of a play-off against Branden Grace. Mickelson will attempt to lift the Claret Jug for the first time, when he tees up at Muirfield next week. Mickelson, famed for his short game prowess, and a four-time Major winner, showed exactly why after making light of a bare lie to stop his wedge shot on the parfive 18th hole within inches of the cup.
OTTINGHAM: James Anderson insisted he was prepared for more hard work in pursuit of Ashes glory after leading England to a nailbiting 14-run win over Australia in the first Test at Trent Bridge. Anderson bowled 13 unchanged overs in yesterday’s morning session, taking three for 29 on his way to innings figures of five for 73 and a match return of 10 for 158 as Ashesholders England went 1-0 up in this fivematch series. At 231 for nine, Australia were 80 runs shy of their victory target of 311. But a last-wicket stand of 65 between Brad Haddin (71) and James Pattinson (25 not out) took them to the brink of a sensational win. It was no surprise when England captain Alastair Cook turned to Anderson after lunch. And the 30-year-old Lancashire seamer duly obliged, albeit with the aid of the controversial Decision Review System (DRS), to have Haddin caught behind by opposing wicketkeeper Matt Prior after England successfully challenged Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar’s original not out verdict. Anderson’s match figures were his best in Test cricket since he took 11 for 71 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2010. “I had the nerves going a little bit but I love bowling here, it’s been good to me over the years and I’m happy that I could pick up some more wickets,” said Anderson, who has now taken 49 wickets in seven Trent Bridge Tests. Anderson, long the linchpin of England’s attack, admitted that maintaining a workload
Shiv Kapur looks to play to his potential at Edinburgh
EDINBURGH: Richer in experience, Indian golfer Shiv Kapur will not feel like a ‘kid in a candy store’ when he makes his second appearance at The Open Championship, starting here on Thursday. Kapur, who is a winner on the Asian Tour, qualified for the year’s third Major championship at the Local Final Qualifying (LFQ) event in Dunbar, Scotland two weeks ago. His first appearance at The Open Championship was in 2006 and he still has vivid recollection of his Major debut despite missing the halfway cut by one shot. “It was the most incredible week of my life. I was like a kid in a candy store and just soaked up the whole experience. Playing that year made me realise why there is such a hype surrounding the majors and it lived up to every moment,” said Kapur.

Indian boxers have nine day!
N
EW DELHI: It turned out to be a field day for India’s young pugilists as they punched their way to an unprecedented nine medals, including four gold, in the Golden Glove of Vojvodina — an international boxing tournament being held in Kikinda, Serbia. A Silambarasan (52kg), who was declared the ‘Best Fighter of the Tournament’, and Manish Solanki (69kg) bagged the yellow metal in the men’s section while Rajesh Kumari (48kg) and Chanda Udanshive (51kg) did likewise in the women’s division. Youth World Championships bronze medal winner Lalitha Prasad (49kg) and reigning national champion Neeraj Parashar (64kg) had to be content with silver medals. Also winning silver were Marthamma Sattivada (64kg), Diksha (91kg) and Pema Chotan (+91kg). Silambarasan, a silver medallist in the 2012 Aglorav Cup, continued his form in the tournament as he edged past Scotsman Stephen Boyle in the flyweight division. Both the pugilists played a very similar style of boxing and started off with an electric pace with

similar to Sunday’s stint across an entire series would be tough. “If I’m bowling 13-over spells it’s going to be difficult! “But it’s Ashes cricket...That’s why we do the hard work in the gym — to get out there and bowl long spells. “As soon as I got the ball I felt in control and I wasn’t nervous because I knew what I was doing and I knew I could get that final wicket,” added Anderson, whose first three wickets on Sunday, all came via catches by Cook at first slip. “We knew it was going to be difficult this morning, their tail is very strong so we knew we had to bowl well. But I found some rhythm this (Sunday) morning which the captain cottoned on to and gave me 13 overs so I’m just delighted,” said Anderson. Cook praised Anderson’s stamina, as well as his expertise. “We know all about Jimmy’s skill but his heart to keep running in on a hot day on a flat wicket was outstanding,” said Cook. “He swings it both ways on an immaculate length and makes it very hard to score. When a bowler hits a rhythm you just keep asking him if he’s feeling alright,” the opening batsman added. Meanwhile, with the second Test at Lord’s starting on Thursday, England great Ian Botham urged Anderson, a bowler he compared to his old New Zealand adversary Richard Hadlee, be “wrapped up in cotton wool”.

Omitted from his country’s failed Champions Trophy campaign, the mercurial all-rounder returned the best-ever ODI bowling figures by a Pakistani, and the second best overall, in snaring seven for 12 to rout the home side for just 98 off 41 overs after having top-scored with a typically swashbuckling 76 in the visitors’ total of 224 for nine yesterday. “I try hard and I back myself and I want to thank people back home,” said Afridi. “It’s not time for me to just survive in the team, but to give a lot to the team. I tried to stay positive.
Lehmann wants more from Australia’s batsmen N
OTTINGHAM: Australia coach Darren Lehmann has told his top order batsmen to up their game in time for the second Test against England at Lord’s starting Thursday. The tourists came close to a stunning win in the first Test at Trent Bridge before Ashes-holders England scraped home by 14 runs yesterday to go 1-0 up in this five-match series. This Ashes series was always likely to hinge on the performance of Australia’s top order and Lehmann, himself a former Test batsman, was in no doubt of what was required. “Our tail has done really well over a period of time now but it’s time for the batters to
make sure they’re making the runs,” he said. “I think we only batted for 64 overs in the first innings and 110 in the second. We’ve got to be reversing that about, batting for 120 overs plus in the first innings of a game and making our runs there,” said Lehmann. Among those now under pressure for their place is Ed Cowan who, on his home ground after a spell with Nottinghamshire this season, was out for a duck in the first innings driving at fast bowler Steven Finn and fell to part-time off-spinner Joe Root for just 14 second time around having been moved to No 3 from his usual opening position.

Jacob Zuma lauds Abhijeet Gupta for winning Commonwealth Championship
J
OHANNESBURG: South African President Jacob Zuma has lauded Indian chess player Abhijeet Gupta after he won the Commonwealth Championship in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth in Eastern Cape Province of the country. Zuma handed a gold medal to the 23-yearold, who has won 20 medals representing India at World, Asian and Commonwealth Chess Championships in sub-junior, junior and senior categories. Winning silver was Sergii Fedorchuk of Ukraine, while the bronze medal went to Sergei Tiviakov of Netherlands. Nearly 900 participants from 29 countries participated in the 19th edition of the Commonwealth Chess Championships. Zuma earlier drew a game after 20 minutes against the youngest player in the championships, five-year-old Keagan Rowe from East London in South Africa, later saying he had sacrificed some pieces “to balance the game.” Zuma learnt to play chess while imprisoned on Robben Island alongside former president Nelson Mandela. “Chess provided a solace to us that we
needed in those conditions of isolation and deprivation. It propelled our minds beyond the confines of the prison walls and allowed us to reflect and to position our thoughts strategically to fight the (apartheid) regime,” Zuma said as he explained how prisoners had made chess sets out of soap and driftwood. Zuma also called for chess to be encouraged as a serious sport in schools. “(Chess) promotes latent skills among the children, patience, quick wit, decisiveness and confidence arising from competition with counterparts, including those from outside the country,” he said.

Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell fail drug tests J
AMAICA: Tyson Gay, holder of the American 100m record, and Asafa Powell from Jamaica, a former world record holder, have both tested positive for a banned substance. Tyson Gay’s A sample from a test in May has come back positive for a banned substance, which is yet to be revealed. The American has subsequently withdrawn from the upcoming world championships, and has said that he will take any punishment handed down by governing bodies ‘like a man’, but has denied knowingly taking a PED. The former world champion, who was tipped by many to really challenge Usain Bolt this year, said that he was told about the result on Friday. He said: “I don’t have a sabotage story. I don’t have lies. I basically put my trust in someone and I was let down. I made a mistake. I know exactly what went on, but I can’t discuss it right now. It has been tough for me. I have always been a drug-free athlete. I
hope I am able to run again, but I will take whatever punishment I get like a man.” Jamaican sprinter Powell admitted that he was one of five athletes from Jamaica who tested positive for banned substances. “I will confirm that a sample I gave at the National Trials in June has returned ‘adverse findings. The substance oxilofrine was found, which is considered by the authorities to be a banned stimulant. I want to be clear…that I have never knowingly or wilfully taken any supplements or substances that break any rules. I am not now nor have I ever been a cheat. My team has launched an internal investigation and we are co-operating with the relevant agencies and law enforcement authorities to discover how the substance got in my system. “I assure you we will find out how this substance passed our rigorous internal checks and balances and design systems to make sure it never happens again.”
EW DELHI: Rohit Sharma’s success in the role of an opener has given a new lease of life to his international career and the promising batsman believes that the current run of form has been “the best and most satisfying phase” since he donned India colours. “From the point of view of consistency, this has certainly been the best phase as an international cricketer. I am enjoying my new role as an opener. That I have been successful and my contribution has helped the team’s cause makes it even more satisfying. I am hoping to keep up the good work,” Sharma told PTI in an interview today. In the 12 matches since he was asked to open, the talented 26-year-old Mumbaikar has scored five half-centuries apart from two near-50 scores and Sharma attributes it to the sound technique that he possesses. “I was always confident about my technique. The opener’s job is specialized one but I always knew that I could hold my own if I am given an opportunity at the top of the order. Also I have opened a couple of times in T20’s for India, so it wasn’t an entirely new experience,” said Sharma, who scored a match-winning 83 against England in Mohali, on his maiden appearance as an opener. On his own admission, the offer to open the innings came suddenly to him. “I wasn’t exactly surprised but I knew that it would be challenging. But then in life, when challenges are thrown at you, you should believe in your instincts and go for it. The innings of 83 against England wasn’t the best but certainly an effort that proved to be a morale booster for me,” stated Sharma, who has scored 2459 runs in 98 ODIs with two centuries and 17 half-centuries. Asked about the change in ODI opener’s role since two new balls are being used, he admitted that it is indeed a big challenge. “The opener’s role with two new balls coming into play has changed. It’s no longer going after the bowling from the word ‘go’. There are a few shots which should be avoided during the initial overs”, he said. “For example, when the ball is pitched up, one would love to play a drive but now it is better to be a bit watchful. Having said that, I
am not saying that one shouldn’t play his natural game,” Sharma explained. He has faced scathing criticism and intense media scrutiny after the initial failures but nothing has perturbed him. “When people said a lot of things, I was not really disturbed as I knew my ability. My job is to focus on my game and I try to do that. I can’t stop someone from writing whatever he feels like. I would rather concentrate on my job and that is to score runs.” Sharma has captained Mumbai Indians to their maiden IPL triumph and leading the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Lasith Malinga has certainly helped him grow as a cricketer.“I won’t say that leading someone like Sachin Tendulkar or Ricky Ponting made me conscious but certainly more responsible. The moment you become captain, you not only have to lead by example with your own performances but also be responsible for field placings and bowling changes. Responsibility always makes you a better cricketer,” he opined.
