Rakesh Maria's special team of 60 police personnel successfully nabs one-eyed culprit from Khar
Ayaz Mohammad Ali Ansari

T
he elusive one-eyed serial child molester who preyed on children in different parts of the city and suburbs was finally nabbed by the police on Wednesday morning from the Golibar area in Khar (East). Almost the whole of the Mumbai police force was trying hard to trace the accused who was finally nabbed by the DN Nagar police. The authorities had drawn more than five sketches of the accused from different angles hoping to home in on him. Till a week ago, the accused, Ayaz Mohammad Ali Ansari alias Firoze Kaniya

(35) had not been identified by the police. Several teams of policemen from the local police stations, crime branch, ATS, etc. were trying to locate him and Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria himself created a special team of around 60 police personnel to nab him. According to the police, last year, Ansari was arrested by the Malad police in a robbery case. He was sent to jail for six months. In May 2013, he came out of jail and immediately started targeting females, especially small girls. Ansari is reportedly a habitual criminal and a drug addict. Most of the time, he is allegedly under influence of
narcotic substances. The police said that while he targeted several small girls and young women, he had cases of theft registered against him at several police stations. Since childhood, Ansari has been a resident of Avdin Society, Ekta Nagar in Juhu Gully, and stayed with his elder brother and mother. Due to his criminal activities and drug addiction, the family has had to suffer a lot, changing their home thrice in the Juhu Gully area. A neighbour at his old residence said, “There were several fights between family members and Ansari. This house too, they Continued on pg 8 «

Does your constituency have a really good candidate you are willing to support? Leroy D'souza MBA Student I would vote for Mayank Gandhi. He is possibly the most approachable person among all the candidates contesting for any of the six seats. Taruka Srivastava Law Student Milind Deora, as he holds no personal agendas, works for the welfare of the people and there are stats that prove the same.
Avinash Lohana Student Medha Patkar, who has been working very passionately for whatever cause or work she takes up, also her major inclination towards infrastructure. Rachna Kuradia Social Media Executive I would opt for 'NOTA' as there is no one whom I am willing to vote this time. Children seeking admissions to kindergarten schools are being asked to recite the alphabet, list numbers and identify objects in interviews, a practice prohibited by the law. Experts ask, ‘Is this the example educational institutions are seeking to set on these tender impressionable minds?’

s admissions for kindergarten have kicked off, a new twist unfolds in this competitive process. Even though the state government has explicityly banned schools from interviewing parents and children, schools have relieved the parents but continue to interviewing the children to deem them eligible to be admitted. Basic questions like, “What is your name?” and “How are you?” have been sidetracked and kids are now being asked to recite the alphabet, list numbers and identify objects to book a seat for themselves in schools. This new process has now made it necessary for parents to teach their kids the basics

magine your toe being nibbled by a rat but you don't realise it till you wake up the next day with a bloody toe. This is the sad story of 44-year-old Omprakash Ulvekar, a diabetic for the last ten years. Fortunately, his wounds are healing well and he did not have to amputate his toes. “I was sleeping at night and did not even realise that a rat was nibbling at my toes. I woke up in the morning and saw that my foot was bloody. My family was shocked to see this. I rushed for medical help,” said Omprakash, a resident of Bhandup. Dr. Arun Bal, consultant diabetic foot surgeon at S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mahim who is treating Om-
prakash said, “All his four toes except the big toe had been partially eaten away by the rat. But we treated him immediately and he is recovering well.” Dr. Bal continued, “In cases of diabetic foot, the nerves are damaged and the skin is dry so the person does not have sensation there. They have to be very careful that they do not get injured, because injuries in cases like these, when not attended to in time and in the correct manner, can lead to complications. Such people should take care by covering their feet with socks at night. I see two or three cases of such bites every month.” “I am recovering now. But now I keep my feet covered as advised by the doctor,” said Omprakash.

before they are taught anything in the schools. As per the rules of the state education department, schools should not interview a child, or her parents, seeking admission into the school. Yet the children continue to be victimised in this gross process. Parents are angry about this system claiming they have to teach their kids what the schools are supposed to teach them, even before they can join school. A parent who wished not to reveal his name said, “This is a silly practice by schools. We have to first teach to our kids and then the schools will interview them. How is it possible for these kids to be speak the alphabets or identify and name objects? This is the reason we send
our kids to schools to study, so the school can teach them. The education department should take strict action against this.” Last year, the ADC had reported about schools interviewing the parents of the children seeking admissions. Soon after, the state education department took action against such schools. The ADC, speaking to Govind Kulkarni, Deputy Education Officer, Primary Aided Schools, said, “This issue has been taken up in the assemblies several times and the education department is strictly looking into it. Schools have been found violating the rules, and the education department will be taking strict action against such schools.”
Amboli Dr. Satish Shah accused of negligence Family claims doctor was unresponsive to patient's post-surgery symptoms, hospital lacked oxygen facilities and refused to release him, eventually causing patient’s death By Shwetha Kannan
A
family has accused Dr. Satij Shah of Prime Speciality Clinic at Amboli, for alleged medical negligence that lead to the death of one of its members. Shahzad Ansari (32) who passed away on Tuesday evening, had been admitted to the clinic a week ago because he had some issues with his back. He underwent surgery two days after being admitted. Speaking about what happened, Anwar Shah, a cousin of the deceased, said, “After the surgery Shahzad could not lift his left leg. We asked the for a reason doctor because he hadn't had trouble walking. He used to go to work and do his daily chores very well.” Shah claims the doctor did not give a satisfactory reply and said that nothing was wrong. On Tuesday at around 11.30 am, Shahzad started feeling uncomfortable. He was finding it difficult to breathe. When they asked the doctor to do something for him, Shah says that he doctor said that there was no fa-
cility to supply oxygen to him. “We were shocked because this is a basic facility and without it how did they operate upon by brother?” The family immediately decided to shift Shahzad to Cooper hospital but the doctor was not willing to release him, though his condition was worsening. It was after heated arguments, at around 3.15 pm or so, Shah said, “we left the clinic and reached Cooper by 3.45 pm. But by then my brother's condition had deteriorated.” Shahzad was declared dead by the doctors at Cooper hospital when he got there. “The lack of facilities at the clinic and the delay in letting us take him to another hospital lead to his death,” claims Anwar Shah. The body has been sent to JJ hospital for the post-mortem as the family wants it to be video recorded. The police has taken statements from both the accused and the aggrieved and is awaiting the post mortem report. “We have recorded the statements of the family as well as the doctor. It is only after the post-mortem report comes that we will be able to take further action,” said Prabhakar Medhe, Senior Police Inspector, Amboli police station. The deceased is survived by his parents, his wife and two children and was the earning member of the family informed Anwar. (Inputs from Zuber Ansari) shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

grudge it to Nagraj Manjule, both for directing and acting in the film. Plus there is young Somnath Avghade who played the young protagonist and Chandrakant Kulkarni who has also deservedly received an award for his portrayal of the CM of Maharashtra as a man of integrity and conscience. Otherwise, says our Marathi film critic Sandeep Hattangadi, the other awards were expected. Best Film for ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, which also bagged Best Choreography, Best Director to Hansal Mehta for Shahid, for the tragic tale of a lawyer slain by criminal elements, Best Performance to Rajkumar Rao who shared the award with Suraj Venjaramoodu for Malayalam movie ‘Perariyathavar’. “Perfect choices, but 'Jolly LLB' for the best Hindi film, about a small town lawyer fighting it out with a city bred top lawyer played by Boman Irani, was a real

surprise. Saurabh Shukla got the Supporting Role award for the film as a no-nonsense judge and he was good but we think Boman deserved it more. “Soumik Sen's take on women empowerment in ‘Gulaab Gang’ starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla really was a good choice for the best film on social issues. And we also believe Juhi Chawla deserved an award for the Best Supporting Actor (Female). “Then there was the definitely avant garde ‘Ship of Theseus’ directed by Anand Gandhi which won Best Feature Film, technical awards for Shoojit Sircar's ‘Madras Café,’ shot on rough locations in Sri Lanka and the special effects for Girish Malik’s ‘Jal’, where the desert sandstorms in Kutch were superbly created on screen.” There's much more, but frankly, we were interested in the Marathi triumph because it was the most richly deserved of all.

Goldfish in a bowl!
Make no mistake about it. At a time when campaigning for the coming elections in India has reached an absolute, all time low, the Congress Party's Milind Deora, also the incumbent from Mumbai South, comes across as squeaky clean. Neither does he indulge in vituperative, nor is he given to show-sha and shenanigans. He just bashes on grimly, going on padayatras, addressing rallies and attending street corner meetings, his tall, skinny frame usually in impeccable whites, his vision of what MPs should actually be doing (legislating, if you don't mind) curiously at odds with the public perception of what their MPs should be doing – e.g. seeing to roads, using MPLAD funds to top up funding for gardens, endowing the neighbourhood school with computers!
A triumphant clenched fist bump from Nagraj Manjule, the debutant director of 'Fandry,' which has won him an award at the 161st National Film Awards announced yesterday.
We must admit to being absolutely delighted to learn that the Marathi film Fandry, of which we had heard much a few months ago, a story about class struggle in interior
Maharashtra, has got the Indira Gandhi Critique award for Best Debut Director in the National Film Awards announced yesterday. And there is not a soul who would

What do you expect from a man wearing the topi now largely associated with a rival party, faced with the prospect of trudging around Sewree and Byculla in the serious afternoon heat – that he will also look happy at the prospect? have the very first bit in our own segment of it. A part of our even more important local system, the service is sadly overcrowded throughout the day, and runs for 21 out of 24 hours. When it first ran, the route was 34 km and traveling was considered the sole entitlement of the memsahibs and sahibs who made the journey dressed to the nines, the ladies wearing hats and gowns, the gentlemen in top hats and tails. Contrast that with the way we travel now – like sub-humans in cattle class, dumbly tolerating the worst conditions to get to home and office. But also consider that this system carries 7.5 million people a day. That is more than 2.6 billion people a year. India and China combined. Then perhaps you will realise the enormous strain on the system. In 1853, on April 16, the 14coach train took 57 minutes to complete the journey from Bori Bunder to Tannah, ending at 3:35 pm. There was one halt at Sion to fill the train's water tanks. Two cakes is all that the anniversary got yesterday.
We sometimes wonder what it must be like for an alumnus of Sydenham College and Boston University, a guy who is also a mean Blues guitarist, to go on the stump in an exercise where it usually pays to be part of the lowest common denominator. Milind Deora, Union Minister of State for Information Technology and Shipping was campaigning in Sewree and Byculla yesterday, trudging from one spot to another, most of them unsalubrious, and the heat must have been killing. No wonder he looked strained at times. The response to his campaign has been great we are told, but that may just be his media cell talking! Also that citizens from across areas in South Mumbai have been greeting him and his team with extreme warmth and have assured him of their complete support during the upcoming elections. For the sake of this extremely likeable young man, we hope that this is the correct picture. However, we also know that Indian voters are notorious liars and that not even Narendra Modi can afford to take them for granted.

AAP cries foul! Says party candidates are not given permission for rallies, road shows in city; authorities creating hurdles deliberately
Spoilsports missing MNS candidates who ruined Sena-BJP prospects in 2009, except Bala Nandgaonkar, not in the fray now
By Prashant Hamine By Suyash Padate
T
he Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which is virtually struggling to get volunteers due to lack of funds has yesterday alleged that its candidates in Mumbai were repeatedly denied permission to hold rallies, road shows and other events by the authorities. Upset with the state of affairs, the AAP has issued a statement. According to AAP, “While the other parties are granted permission with ease, AAP has been consistently harassed by the authorities and the volunteers seeking permission are made to run from pillar-to-post. Unlike other parties, which use political clout and con-
nections, AAP is run by an army of volunteers who ensure that every single rule is followed, but we are finding it hard to cope with the growing discomfort caused in seeking permissions.” “We strongly feel that there are political forces trying to show their clout and deny AAP the right to free and fair campaigning. Party's SouthCentral Mumbai candidate Sundar Balakrishnan was forced to sit on a dharna on Tuesday as he was denied permission to hold a rally in his constituency. After his strong protest permission was granted to hold the rally,” AAP pointed out. “Our applications for 10 am rallies, submitted a day prior are granted at 12 noon on the
day of the rally. We strongly feel that AAP routes are adjusted to accommodate other parties but sometimes a party books a whole area and AAP is denied permission to campaign in those areas. The authorities are persistent about every detail, which they should be but other parties are not asked to furnish particulars of cars and bikes,” the party added further. The AAP is proud of the independent and strict conduct of the Election Commission, but individuals are perhaps getting compromised by political pressure. Despite these hurdles AAP will continue the battle and work together with Election Commission to reinforce the democracy, AAP has made it clear in its statement.
Job well done, Sena lauds ECI By Prashant Hamine
S
enior Shiv Sena MLC Dr. Neelam Gorhe yesterday welcomed the tough stance taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in seizure of large sums of cash during the ongoing campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in the state. Speaking to newspersons at party office Shivalaya here, she expressed surprise over seizure of Rs 11.50 crore at Tembhurne tehsil in Madha Lok Sabha constituency. She said that it is baffling to note that such a large seizure of cash in a relatively nodescript town of Tembhurne arguing that such a large amount could not be meant for payment of
wages to government officials there as claimed by official sources. She however admitted that it was wrong for the poll officials to empty tiffin boxes of their contents to find out if any cash was hidden in them. Gorhe lashed out at Congress-NCP leaders complaining that the ECI was going overboard in its drive to check movement of illegal cash during poll campaigning. She demanded that the ECI should probe the source from where the cash was coming and where it was meant to be sent. Replying to queries, the Sena leader ruled out the possibility of division of BJP-Sena votes despite the presence of
arch rival MNS and new entrant, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Gorhe argued that the outcome of this Lok Sabha elections will have a damning impact on the electoral fortunes of the ruling CongressNCP alliance in the state. Commenting upon the campaigning, she stated that due to the electronic media and the social media the elections this time have reached the masses. Replying to queries, she maintained that Sena president Uddhav Thackeray has been aggressive in his campaigning and has raised national issues.
I
n 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the nine Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidates in Mumbai and Thane spoiled the BJP-Shiv Sena party, ensuring a total whitewash in Mumbai. Barring Bala Nandgaonkar who is trying his luck for the second time in Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency, the rest – Shirish Parkar, Shalini Thakare, Shilpa Sarpotdar, Shishir Shinde, Shweta Parulkar, Devraj K. Mhatre, Vaishali Darekar and Rajan Raje are nowhere to be seen in this Lok Sabha elections. Out of these Shweta Parulkar has since returned back to the Sena fold, while Raje has formed his own political outfit. The 2009 Lok Sabha results had left a bitter taste in the mouths of BJP-Sena leaders, especially in the case of Mumbai North and Mumbai North-East where BJP candidates lost by a narrow margin. Shirish Parkar who had then polled 1.47 lakh votes which saw Sanjay Nirupam (Congress) trounce BJP stalwart Ram Naik by a narrow margin of just 5,779 votes. Similarly, in Mumbai North-East, the 1.95 lakh votes polled by Shishir Shinde saw NCP's Sanjay Dina Patil defeat BJP's Kirit Somaiya by the narrowest margin of just 2,933 votes. The only MNS candidate who failed to spoil the BJP-Sena party was Vaishali Darekar in Kalyan Lok Sabha seat, which was won
Bala Nandgaonkar by then Sena candidate Anand Paranjape by a margin of 24,202 votes. Almost all the MNS candidates had polled more than 1 lakh votes, seriously damaging the BJP-Sena cause. Shirish Parkar (Mumbai North) who was then the trusted aide of MNS chief Raj Thackeray has now fallen out of favour with the MNS chief and is pushed in to political oblivion. Shalini Thakare (Mumbai NorthWest) despite being a distant relative of the MNS chief has been denied ticket this time around and is reported to be sulking. Shilpa Sarpotdar (Mumbai North-Central) had been active for some time, but the untimely demise of her husband Atul Sarpotdar has seen her keeping a low profile. The same holds true for Shishir Shinde (Mumbai NorthEast) who had declined to contest the Lok Sabha elections this time around. Shweta Parulkar (Mumbai South-Central) who had dented Sena pride in its
Dadar bastion has since returned to the Sena fold and now keeps a low profile. The only exception to the rule being Bala Nandgaonkar (Mumbai South) who is the only one of the 2009 lot who is taking a second chance. In neighbouring Thane district, Devraj Kisan Mhatre who spoiled the party for BJP's Jagannath Patil in Bhiwandi Lok Sabha constituency is not even heard of these days. Same is the case with Vaishali DarekarRane (Kalyan) who has been relegated to political obscurity. Former MNS trade union leader Rajan Raje who contested from Thane Lok Sabha constituency since then quit the party and formed his own political outfit. The BJP-Sena alliance despite polling 17.54 lakh votes in the nine Lok Sabha seats of Mumbai and Thane drew a near blank. The MNS polled 12.11 lakh votes which ensured that the BJPSena drew a blank in Mumbai and was almost blanked out in Thane. Pic and Text by Suresh Golani.

Says Ashish Khetan, journalist and AAP candidate from New Delhi LS constituency By A Staff Reporter
J
ournalist and AAP candidate from New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency Ashish Khetan on Wednesday alleged all the established political parties in Maharashtra had only looted the Mumbai citizens. "I am shocked to see that Mumbaikars are living in conditions worse than hell," Khetan said, alleging slumdwellers of Mandala in Mankhurd, which he visited, lived in a constant threat of encroachment by the mafia who deal in dangerous chemicals and petroleum substances. There is a scarcity of drinking water and 300 families buy drinking water for Rs.5 per can in this area, he told PTI. Families in Lalubhai Compound -- an MMRDA housing complex -- were living in dilapidated buildings which were crumbling even though they were just about a
Cops Hunt Down... Continued from pg 1 « left due to his crimes and drug addiction.” From the fourth house, which they are now staying at on rent, the family had thrown Ansari out, and did not let him enter after cutting all ties with him, said police, who added that, most of the time, he is found in Nirmal Nagar area of Khar East. His popular name, Kaniya, was given by other drug addicts of the same area, and police too refer to him by the same name. According to police officials, after he was released from jail in May last year, he molested several girls but no one came forward to complain. However, after around eight incidents were reported, the first FIR was registered against him on July 9, 2013. A very high level meeting by police and mohalla committee was held by cops and a sketch of Ansari was also released. However, at that time, police officials did not give any importance to the case. After the Nirmal Nagar incident, the accused got very active and started targeting minor girls on regular basis. Meanwhile, he even snatched several mobile phones, money, cycles, etc. from youngsters. He would do this to get drugs for himself. He even committed offences in local trains. Talking about his modus operandi, police said, ''He approaches his target and tells her he is a friend of her father and needs to give a message for him. He then takes the girl to an isolated
decade-old, he said. "Open sewers run between buildings and water drips from ceilings and the state government or corporation provide no sanitation to residents even though they pay Rs 1.4 lakh in tax per building every year. "The conditions of MHADA (state housing authority) transit homes were the worst where 110 families are living in fear of death as the buildings are on verge of collapse," he said. Hitting out at BJP-Shiv Sena alliance in Maharashtra, he said if BJP wanted to make India corruption-free, it would not encourage corruption in BMC (controlled by the saffron alliance). "If BJP and Shiv Sena say that they will make India corruption-free, then why did they turn BMC into a hub of corruption? What will Narendra Modi and Uddhav (Thackeray) say on this?" he said. place, from where, after molesting her, he flees. Till now, 13 such cases have been registered, mostly in western suburbs from Andheri to Bandra and one in Sion. Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria took personal initiative and asked his men to put in extra efforts to nab the accused. All crime branch units and ATS were asked to work on the case. Several informers and drug addicts were picked up, but in vain. However, in the Amboli case, the police officials found CCTV footage and based on it, a clear picture and his walking style was also revealed. The investigating officer in the Malad police station saw the CCTV footage and recognised him as an accused who was arrested in a theft case earlier. Meanwhile, police officials showed the footage and Ansari’s pictures to all victims who positively identified him. The Malad police officer who identified Ansari from his walking style, informed the investigating team about Ansari’s whereabouts and the DN Nagar police team reached the place first and detained his mother and brother two days ago. They were kept in the police station all the time. When Ansari got the hint that police were closing in on him, he went into hiding, but was getting his drugs on a regular basis from Nirmal Nagar. On Monday morning, Ansari called his brother from a local PCO and decided to meet him in Golibar where Nimal Nagar police officials laid a trap and arrested him in co-ordination of DN Nagar police.

n Tuesday, the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested a man who had jumped parole last year. He turned out to be a wanted criminal with established links in the mobile phone IMEI (International Mobile Station Equipment Identity) number racket. The accused has been identified as Shabbir Khan alias Khadda and was arrested from Laljipada in Kandivali (W). Khadda was convicted for murdering a jeweller in 2007 and was serving his life term before he jumped parole in 2013 and did not return back. Interestingly, Khadda's interrogation by the sleuths of Crime Branch Unit 11, revealed that he used to hand over the stolen mobile phones to a man named Tushar Rajput. he Mumbai Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested a travel agent who has been accused of conning almost a dozen people in the past one year. According to the police, the accused identified as Himanshu Pitroda had booked air travel tickets through the agency and fled with the money. Pitroda used to book the air travel tickets through his travel agency Travel & Trip, taking the money in advance from the customers. Pitroda then cancelled the tickets without the knowledge of his customers and keep the refund amount. Tabrez went to the Mankhurd school and verified the school certificate which Saeed and Aftab had produced. The school authorities, were shocked by the news and said they had not issued any school certificate in the name of Tabrez Shaikh. After receiving this information from Mankhurd School, Tabrez move the court and demanded a cheating and forgery case to be registered against Saeed and
Aftab. Based on his application, the Bandra court issued an order on March 25 and registered the case against both. Finally, on its direction the Bandra police registered the case on Saturday. “The court has ordered us to register a case against Saeed and Aftab and asked us to investigate the matter because it is suspected that they have involved in other similar cases too,” said police sources. “We have launched a manhunt to nab both Saeed and Aftab. The FIR has been registered under various sections of the IPC including 420, 465, 467, 468, 471 and 34.”
Cops nab parole jumper, connect him to many crimes several stolen mobile phones, said the police. After jumping parole, Khadda became a big fish in the mobile theft business and the cops strongly believe that he was running a cartel. “Khadda was the link in the Rajput case, who used to change the IMEI number within minutes using software,” said DCP Ambadas Pote (Detection-1). Khadda's arrest could lead the police to trace several mobiles which were stolen in 2013, said senior inspector (Unit 11) Avinash Sawant. Police gave long chase to nab Khadda

Hospital for the post mortem where it was found that he died naturally from a heart attack. Complainant Tabrez Shaikh moved the court to quash his FIR. Pitroda was arrested in Mangalore by the Property Cell sleuths, who handed him over to the Mahim police station for further investigation. He has been arrested under sections of 419 and 420 of the IPC. The complainant of this report is Firoz Amrovali, who had lodged a case against Pitroda at Mahim police station, said police. The police added that Potroda has cheated around a dozen people from the last one year with the same modus operandi. neel.shah@afternoondc.in
Khadda (30) was arrested based on a tip off that he visits a room at Laljipada in Kandivali (W). Sub-inspector Nitin Vichare, assistant inspector Sharad Zeni and constables Konde and Naik arrived outside the house where Khadda was located. The cops found it difficult to enter the house without being seen as the premises had a small creaky gate. Con-
sidering this, the cops entered forcefully and Khada got a whiff of their entrance. He tried to escape from the roof of the house. Sub-inspector Vichare and API Zine climbed up after him and a chase ensued. After nearly 20 minutes, Khadda was nabbed by the sleuths. Meanwhile, the police are further inquiring into his role in other crimes in the city. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

n a shocking incident, a 15year-old girl immolated herself at her tenement in Virar, after she was repeatedly raped by an auto-rickshaw driver under the false promise of marriage. According to the police, the accused identified as Hari Patil (25), a resident of Chandansar in Virar (East), has been arrested and booked under sections 376 (Rape) and 366 (Kidnap), 306 (Abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and under the relevant sections of Prevention of Sexual Offences Act, 2012. In his complaint to the police the girl’s father stated that Patil established physical relationship with his school-going
daughter under the pretext of marrying her. When the girl insisted on revealing their relationship to her parents, the accused allegedly started blackmailing her and even threatened to eliminate her and harm her parents. Unable to bear the embarrassment, the girl doused herself with kersosene and set herself on fire at her tenement on April 10. She was rushed to the Centenary Hospital in Kandivli where she succumbed to her burn injuries on Tuesday evening. “We have arrested Patil. He was produced before the Sessions Court in Vasai which remanded him to police custody till April 19,” confirmed investigating officer API R.L. Rokde.

Mody’s one-man-show: Will it go on even after govt. is formed?

S there a division within the BJP with regard to Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister? Opposition parties are alleging that some top leaders of the BJP are opposed to Modi becoming the PM. Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav has stated that it is becoming increasingly clear that if the BJP emerges as the victor in the Lok Sabha elections, there is every possibility Modi will be sidelined and some other leader selected as the PM. It is clear as daylight that M.M. Joshi, for instance, is unhappy over the manner in which Narendra Modi is hogging the limelight. Joshi went on to say that it is wrong to say that there is a Modi wave: It is the wave of the BJP and not Modi alone. Sushma Swaraj has from the very beginning of the poll campaign had strong reservations about Modi’s choice as PM. She knows that there are some influential leaders in the party and among allies who would like to have her as the prime minister. And finally there is L.K. Advani who has still not given up becoming the prime minister. His supporters think he should have been the natural choice for the post of the PM. It is a fact that while Narendra Modi has created a huge wave for the party, somehow there is a feeling in the party that Advani would make a better prime minister. Advani who was number 2 in the Vajpayee government has taken for granted that he would be the next PM. Narendra Modi has solid backing from the party president, Rajnath Singh. It is a fact that without the steady and strong support of Rajnath Singh, Modi would not be having an advantage over his rivals. What is certain is that many differences which have been held back now would surface if the BJP wins and forms the government. For instance, what post Advani will have? Modi is fighting for success singlehandedly. He might want to have a full say in the choice of his cabinet colleagues and also later may dominate the scenario. The disgruntled little voices we hear today among BJP leaders indicate that if and when the party wins and forms the government, Narendra Modi may be confronted with challenges from his colleagues. Today they are grudgingly accepting the successful oneman-show of Modi, but later they may not allow Modi’s bid to carry a one-mangovernment.

VERY time I return to Delhi from my election travels I meet political pundits, hacks, academics, bureaucrats, politicians and socialites who assure me that there is 'no Modi wave.' Usually the person who says this expands on the theme and usually what he or she tells me, with a conspiratorial smile, is that the Congress Party still has a trump card up its sleeve and this trump card is Priyanka Gandhi. The denizens of Lutyens' Delhi cannot believe that there can be an India that is not held together by the pivot of our oldest and most powerful political dynasty and this is the main reason why they choose to remain blind to the possibility of a Modi wave despite poll after poll predicting that he is more than likely to be India's next prime minister. Last week I returned to Delhi from wandering about eastern Uttar Pradesh to find that the Congress Party was preparing to pull out its trump card. Priyanka Gandhi traveled to Rae Bareilli with a small army of TV journalists following in her wake and held meetings with local people that in TV jargon are called 'road shows.' I switched from channel to channel to see if she had something to say that would change the mood of the campaign. But, she stuck to the same script that has been prepared for her mother and brother emphasizing that in this election we are seeing a fight between two ideologies. Our ideology, she said as her brother and mother have repeated endlessly, is to empower ordinary people by giving them the right to information, employment, education and cheap food grain. Their ideology (read Modi) is to give only a small handful of Indians rights. And, we believe in uniting people they believe in dividing people.
Secularism is a fundamental feature She said other things as well. While vilifying her cousin Varun for taking the 'wrong road' she said she would not support anyone, not even her own children, who went against the values of her family. The 'values' she listed were secularism and secularism adding that her father had died to save the unity of India. It was shortly after she made this particular remark that someone from Headlines Today rang to ask for my comments and I was forced to point out that secularism was not a gift to India from the Gandhi family but a funda-

mental characteristic of the Indian Constitution. As for Rajiv Gandhi having died for 'India's unity' this could only be true if he thought Sri Lanka was just another Indian state. He was killed by a Tamil suicide bomber, I reminded my Headlines Today interlocutor, because the Tamil Tigers were deeply offended by his Sri Lanka policy. But, let that be for a moment because the point I am trying to make in this piece is that Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi seem to be surrounded by the kind of people who I run into every time I return to Delhi. These are people so removed from what Gandhiji used to call the 'real India' that they appear to have misled the Dynasty's two heirs. In Delhi's corridors of power and political intrigue there have been for a long while rumours that Rahul Gandhi's war room is manned by whiz kids who plot his political strategy on computers. In the words of one frustrated Congress leader from Bihar, 'You cannot win elections by computers...but no-
IFE lived with reasonable restraint is the basis for happiness. Restraint makes a man patient, well behaved and tolerant. It also develops the personality. So our Vedas and Religious scriptures teach us that even for living best life, one must live a restrained life. Then a person becomes the picture of equipoise, morally strong and detached. While performing the worldly duties, he never binds in worldly restrictions, thus by being involved in family; a man who lives with restraint can attain asceticism. This is the greatness of restrained life. Guruji also insists upon such a great life because in this materialistic world, people are eager to live an unrestrained, uncontrolled life. People are becoming the victim of many diseases and disorders due to their involvement in RAJAS and TAMAS driven by limitless desires. In brief, desire for accumulating wealth, makes a man shed restraint. So, Guruji insists on a balanced life lived with moderation and through his teachings, he awakens the world about the greatness of such life. The same pious sermons are for everyone that none should be overpowered by selfish desires to attain wealth. By fairness and hard work, the wealth which is earned is well deserved and one must never get tense about the things that are beyond reach. But one
Cong painting Modi as anti-Muslim
In the ten years she has been India's de facto prime minister she has never felt the need to do this before. In her televised appeal she said the same things that her daughter did in Rae Bareilli without noticing that this attempt to change the subject from 'minimum government, maximum governance', which is Modi's message, to secularism is likely to resonate only with Muslim voters. And, even with Muslims the dislike of Narendra Modi does not translate into fears that India will be destroyed if he becomes prime minister. Would the campaign have turned out differently if the Gandhi family had paid attention earlier to rumours of a Modi wave? Would they have managed to come up with a more convincing campaign? It is hard to say Tavleen Singh but what can be said is that while the other main political parties in this election have body seems to have told Rahul this so he has identified clear causes that they have associsurrounded himself with close advisors who ated themselves with the Congress campaign sit in front of their computers all day working has been unable to find a single one other out caste combinations and voting percent- than to paint Modi as a Muslim-hating boages.' But, as a local elder, in this most political of political cities, reminded me her name was Mrs. Vadra and if she did decide to enter electoral politics Mr. Vadra would become some pretty heavy baggage. So instead she appears to have decided to campaign more forcefully and more visibly than she has done in past elections to halt the supposedly non-existent Modi wave. What confirmed for me personally that the talk of there not being a wave is mere bluster in the drawing rooms of Lutyens' Delhi was Sonia Gandhi's decision last week to make a televised appeal to voters.
must keep on working hard. By fighting evil thoughts and developing positive energy with meditation, one must give direction to one’s life. Even after becoming an achiever in life, one should lead an ideal life which is balanced and restrained. It is the greatest virtue of a man if he remains balanced and restrained irrespective of circumstances. True meditation not only helps us live a happy, healthy and contented life but also ul-
MATTER & SPIRIT timately helps us realise our Creator, God. What is Meditation? True meditation is taught by True Master. No one knows that there is such a supreme power that is present inside everyone, which helps everyone in this world and even beyond. Only the Guru makes it attainable by the means of meditation. To address and call up the Almighty through God’s words (Gurumantra) is known as meditation. The meditation is a chant which is practically tested by the Master to deliver the soul to higher realms. Once the Soul is emancipated, one can experience God, feels his existence, realise how profoundly He changes our life for the better and helps us get rid of
our tensions and troubles. But Almighty God has to be prayed for by calling his True Name, the correct method of meditation. It helps one became powerful spiritually and tap the ocean of joys within. And by meditating upon God’s words one reaches the tenth door, God’s light and sound is seen and heard. The God becomes manifest, internally. True meditation is a practical way of connecting with God. Each one of us can practice it irrespective of our gender, age, caste, creed, race, nationality or religion. Guru Ji, while initiating an individual, asks that he/she give up alcohol, non-vegetarian food, and immorality. Besides this, there is no other restriction of any kind on the individual. After initiation one needs to spend 15-60 minutes in the morning and the same in the evening daily in meditation. When we are involved in mechanical work that does not require thinking, we can keep on repeating the chant silently, mentally or in an inaudible tone, whenever possible. Thus, prayers and hard work can go hand in hand, resulting in greater success. For instance, if we are walking, travelling or driving, the chanting can go on in our thoughts. It certainly helps improve our concentration and also delivers powerful worldly results such as success in good pursuits. The Naam-Shabd (True Method of Meditation) is an ordered collection of words taught by a True Guru who is a selfless spiritual master. The words praise and invoke God. Simply put, it is a true method of meditation. — Dera Sacha Sauda

Transgenders now part of civilised society THE honourable Supreme Court of India deserves to be congratulated for its landmark judgement of Tuesday the 15th April, 2014 which will now be a red letter day and remembered as a day of victory for the transgender community in India every year and the date will now be christened and celebrated every year as Transgender Day by the vast community members of transgenders in India. AVOIDABLE: Narendra Modi’s marital status is a personal matter. The debate on this issue on television was just not right. Both Modi and the lady in question have a right to their privacy.
A personal matter I was disgusted by the debate on Times Now last night when they discussed the marital status of Mr. Narendra Modi. What was explained was that he had been married as a minor to a minor, the marriage had not been consummated LETTER OF THE DAY and they had lived separately all these years. Mr. Modi merely mentioned this in his affidavit because answering every question has become mandatory. All these past fifteen years when Mr. Modi has been the Chief Minister of Gujarat, this matter did not surface; even the wife preferred her privacy as she is even today. Thus, this is a very personal matter. Mr. Modi was honest to disclose this when it was required prior to which it was a personal matter and up to him to declare or not. Besides, as Mr. Arnab Goswami stated several times, how would this matter in the first place. The Congress is finding it even difficult to find straws to clutch. They are diving into uncharted filthy depths, such that their Shezada had commented and com-
Deplorable behaviour AS reported elections are round the corner and candidates of various parties are fighting tooth and nail to win over electorates. But it is indeed very shameful and regrettable to note that instead of coming out with their national policies, and solutions to mounting crisis and problems like, corruption, inflation, scams, scandals and terrorism and further development and progress of the country they are indulging in woeful personal attacks on with each other. Masood says he will cut Namo to small pieces, Azmi says only only Muslims have won the Kargil war and woman indulging in pre-martial sex should be hanged, Mulayam Singh says that rapists should not be hanged and NAMO is accused of 2002 riots and only Muslims were brutally massacred, and now new controversy has popped up on NAMO's martial status. But the politicans should understand that these are not national problems or crises and should not indulge in personal attacks and that there are much more vital and national issues to be attended to and to be solved.
Film shoot at ward office
Tall promises ignored later AS the country begins the epic chase of electing Lok Sabha members, it is the duty of every Indian citizen to not only cast his/ her vote, but to vote responsibly. The public has no right to crib later. Dedicated candidates with clean record should be elected to serve the nation and its people. Today, it has become difficult to choose the right person and party. Let wisdom prevail upon the voters. Most of today’s problems in India are due to corrupt politics. Unless it is cleansed, nothing would improve the situation of the country. Mahatma Gandhi once said that politics devoid of honesty and spirituality is disastrous for the nation. We have to change the politics of India and I am confident that together, we can. Today, most of the politicians in India make tall claims before onset of elections but forget to deliver them after coming to power. This only shows that they are least bothered about the welfare of the common man who takes time from his/ her busy schedule to exercise his/ her franchise. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili

UNORGANISED: There are a lot of drawbacks in the new terminal which need to be rectified and put on track post haste. RECENTLY the Mumbai international airport got a new and swanky terminal inaugurated with a huge fanfare by no less a person than the Indian PM Manmohan Singh and we the Mumbaikars were indeed proud to have such an additional facility which was expected to cater to the ever growing need of the international travellers. The Sahar terminal handles more than estimated 26 million passengers yearly. However the new terminal T2 seems not at all organised to cope with the ever growing traffic in view of its
abysmally low usage of the existing facility in respect of the number of the front desk counters, staffing, the frequent outages of the computer servers et al, which is going on for a while. Bengal Florican, Lesser Florican, Great Indian Bustard, Sociable Lapwing and Jerdon’s Courser are birds that are under threat due to the destruction of their grassland habitat and scrub forests. The survival of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Siberian Crane and White-bellied Heron greatly depends on the existence of their wetland habitat. Forest Owlet survival is impossible if its habitat of deciduous forests in central India is destroyed. Many factors like uncontrolled urbanisation, unsustainable industrialisation and rampant use of chemicals in agriculture are responsible for this decline.

aharashtra Congress on Wednesday ridiculed BJP's bid to 'portray' Narendra Modi as 'a topper' and said the Gujarat chief minister had proved he is rather weak in history, geography and maths. "At a rally here in December, Modi had said that Maharashtra had 27 chief ministers since its formation. In reality there have been only 17 chief ministers. This shows his maths is poor," Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Anant Gadgil told PTI. The Congress leader further said that Modi claimed had claimed at a rally that he brought the ashes of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee from London to India. "But the fact is it was Shyamaji Krishna Verma, the revolutionary freedom fighter, whose remains were brought here and not those of Mookerjee. This
Anant Gadgil, spokesperson, Cong-Mah. shows he is weak in history. "Mahatma Gandhi gave the Quit India call from Mumbai but Modi said at a rally that the call was given from Wardha. He thus proved his geography is weak too. How can Modi be called a topper if he is weak in so many subjects," Gadgil said. The state Congress spokesperson also claimed that Modi spoke very little on economic policies and foreign affairs.

With the growth of Christianity in Europe, this symbol of new life was adopted by the religion and has come to represent the rebirth or resurrection of Christ .
a scavenger hunt This is a lot of fun if you have your children and their friends over for the day. Cut out paper bunnies (download and print a template off the internet), and tape them in different locations — under the sofa, in cabinets and under potted plants. Set the children off in pairs on a hunt for the bunnies in a limited time frame. Then, each pair can redeem the bunnies for treats. One bunny can be a pack of candy, two could be a piece of cake and so on and so forth.
Easter bunny is said to bring children their Easter eggs. Much like Santa, he evaluates the behaviour of children — both good and bad and rewards the well-behaved ones with Easter eggs.

Make it the grand finale of your party or gathering and give each child small bags to take home their loot in. Egg race With all the talk of eggs, it is hard to leave the classic egg race out. Give each child a spoon and a hard-boiled egg. Make them place the egg on the spoon, hold the end in their mouths and walk to the finish line. Winners get Easter treats, of course! Think you know everything about Easter? Here are some facts you may not have known: l In Guatemala, people make a milelong carpet with sawdust and flowers. The detailed carpet often takes weeks to create. They use the carpet to walk to church on Easter. l Easter was not always about marshmallow and chocolates. During the month of Lent, hot cross buns were made by the monks and given out to the poor — which is where the treats originated from. l The next time you bite into a delicious chocolate egg, you have Germany to thank. surprise eggs Ayushi Shah, from Icing on Top gives us a simple recipe for chocolate egg surprise. Ingredients Chopped white chocolate and chopped dark chocolate (compound), chopped milk chocolate (compound), a few drops of oil, cocoa butter based food colours, candies such as MnM’s, gummy bears, mini chocolate chips, mini cookies and chocolate coated almonds Method Clean your egg moulds with a clean tissue. Separately melt all three chocolates in a microwave. Divide the white chocolate into four different bowls and add the cocoa butter based colours to three of them. Mix well to get soft, pastel shades. You do not want bright and dark colours. Add a little colour, and you can add more as you go on along. l Fill half the mould with chocolate. l Swirl the chocolate evenly inside the mould and once it thickens, use your finger to distribute the chocolate on the sides evenly. l Refrigerate the moulds for 5-7 minutes. l Remove, and use a light hand to press the chocolate out of the mould. Once set, the chocolate slips out very easily. l Heat a saucepan for a few minutes, until it becomes slightly warm. l Place the chocolate cup, open side down on the upside down saucepan. The chocolate on the edge of the eggs will melt. l Fill the chocolate cup with cookies or candies quickly. l Next, using your fingers, smooth the melted chocolate in a manner that closes the opening of the egg. l l
remember Since your children are going to devour these treats, make sure you use food grade colouring. We recommend you opt for paste colours instead of liquid ones. Most major supermarkets, such as Hypercity and Nature's Basket as well as specialist food stores have a good range of food colours that are safe for children.
decorating easter eggs
The most fun thing to do on Easter, has to be decorating Easter eggs. Instead of just painting them, we bring you these easy-to-do alternatives.
sponged eggs Once you paint your egg a base colour, use pieces of sponge dipped in paint to create interesting patterns.
rubber band eggs Tie a few rubber bands around each egg. Dunk the egg in one colour and let it dry. Shift the placement of the rubberbands before you put in the next tub of colour. Repeat this four or five times to get colourful, striped eggs.
glitter eggs If your children like sparkly things, coat your egg with a thick layer of glue and roll it around in loose glitter. Make sure you have enough old newspaper spread out to catch any spills and excess glitter.
spray paint eggs This one is fairly easy as well. Paint each egg a colour of your choice or simply let it be white. Then, using an old toothbrush dipped in paint, use your thumb to spray another colour on to the eggs. Once dry, these speckled eggs look super cute.
sticker eggs This one is super simple too. Take a bunch of small stickers of your choice (hearts, butterflies and animals work well) and stick them onto an egg. Then, paint the egg a colour of your choice and let it dry. Once dry, peel off the stickers for a beautiful Easter egg.

tHalgo cryodetox Mask I’m always slightly weary of face masks, simply because I find that they are messy, take ages to dry and often leave my skin looking exactly like it did before, with the exception of making it feel cooler. This mask from Thalgo, is meant for when your skin is tired and fatigued. The mask also contains African Moringa Seed extract known to purify the skin along with Salicylic acid which exfoliates naturally and is also paraben free. The best part about this mask is that it is a clear gel that goes onto the skin like a cream and doesn’t dry to a stiff, crackled sheet. So, you can still talk while it works its magic. I left it on for 15 minutes and washed it off to find magically smoother, clearer and brighter skin that lasted a good two days. I found that my skin was more supple and definitely more hydrated as well. If not for the sky-rocketing price for the tiny amount of product, I’d use this every other week. price `1,715 for 50 ml WHere Retail outlets across the city star rating ****

f you are the type of woman who lugs a rather large bag of makeup around just in case you need it and can't pack for a trip without someone rolling their eyes at you because of the ten different makeup products you must carry, we have some good news. Travelling light, everyday or on a holiday, is the best thing to do and your makeup bag needn't get left out in the process. While you can't do away with everything, there are some products that can double up as others.
Mascara Works on: Lashline + lashes Mascara does wonders to make you look awake and alert. But, it also does a great job as an eyeliner. Just make sure you have a thin brush (an eye or lip brush will do) in your kit. Use the product from the mascara wand and line your eyes or use it for touch-ups on the go.
Bronzer Works on: Cheeks + eyelids If, like most of us, you end up wearing neutral shades on your eyelids on a daily basis, a bronzer is great to have handy. While you can use it to warm up and contour your face, you can also use it as an eye shadow. Simply blend some into the crease of your eyelid to add some depth, or swipe it all over your lid and build it up to a colour intensity of your choice.
concealer Works on: Spots, blemishes and dark circles + as a makeup base Instead of carrying a foundation as well as a concealer, carry a thick, full-

coverage concealer with you and use it as foundation. Dilute it with your favourite moisturiser before you apply it so that it blends easily and doesn't look cakey.
lipstick Works on: Cheeks + lips Most of us always have a tube of lipstick on us and believe it or not, when it’s applied correctly, you can wear it as blush too. Rub some between your index finger and thumb to warm up the product and blend it in better and then dab it onto the apples of your cheeks. Wipe the excess off your fingertips and blend well for a flawless finish.
Vaseline Works as: Mascara + gloss This one is an old, but solid product. Vaseline is great for chapped lips, but it is even better as a clear mascara. If you want to change your matte lipstick to a shiny, glossy one, simply apply a thin layer of vaseline on top and you are good to go.
HigHligHter Works on: Cheekbones + eyes A pearly highlighter is great to define your cheekbones and add an iridescent glow to your face, but you can also use it to highlight the inner corners of your eyes, under the brow bone and even as your eyeshadow if you want to add a hint of sparkle.

anusHka MancHanda
Few people could get away with this look but Anushka pulls it off with class and style. We love the floor sweeping trousers and the flashes of toned skin saves this outfit from looking too formal. The hint of pink adds a fun touch, but the black cuff seems out of place.
«
natalia kaur
With a body like hers, Natalia could get away with wearing a garbage bag. The simple dress flatters her fab figure and we love how she’s stuck the classic gold and red combo. Our only gripe is that we wish the shoes were strappy.

preeti JHangiani
It’s not that the outfit is that bad, it’s just very boring. The dress seems to be too casual and we feel that a pop of colour, on her lips, nails or shoes, could have helped her add a little glam to her overall look. Her hairstyle is also not red carpet worthy.

I can understand if she is unwell or has a genuine concern, but she always has a ready excuse to get out of going for the events. While a genuine reason may crop up once in a while, your employee seems to be playing the emotion card to her advantage, to get out of doing any field work. The only way to deal with this is to tell her that she needs to buck up and find a way to deal with personal situations without compromising on work. You will have to play bad cop. ou think you are being sneaky; you managed to shop online, finished a little freelance work and even spent hours stalking someone on Facebook; all while you were pretending to look extremely busy, right under your boss’ nose. While you are laughing about how ignorant your boss is, your boss is thinking of ways to fire you. Your company knows everything you do, whether you are currently employed with them or are a former employee. If you are doing things at work that you shouldn't be doing and think that you will never get caught, its time you think again!
You drift away to shopping online, updating your Facebook status, changing your display picture and tweeting every hour. Even if your bosses are not monitoring your social networking sites, they know you are not working when a window is minimised every time somebody walks past. Most companies also have permission to read outgoing mails from employees and if you are working for such a company and have been goofing around, you probably need to start looking for a new job.
Phony Leave Reasons Have you faked the flu or an unfortunate accident while preparing to head for a weekend getaway? Well, your boss knows. He/ she has probably been in the same position in the past, so even if your creative juices start flowing with excellent excuses such as dental appointments, a burglary at home, car trouble or plumbing work, it’s incorrect to think that you have fooled your boss. Also, if your company is suspicious, there are chances that they will investigate your reasons, which can escalate into bigger problems for you.
You are the type of girl whose job involves meeting clients every day and most of your work is done outside the confines of your office. After logging off as ‘Out for a meeting,’ you quickly make an appointment at a salon or spend two hours at a spa under the guise of having a lunch meeting. We understand that it's difficult to manage paying your children's school fees, visiting the dentist, or even just renewing your library membership — especially if you work Saturdays as well. But, skipping work to do them (dishonestly) is bound to catch up with you sooner or later.
The ‘Busy’ Look
JoB hunT
A lot of your work is pending, but, somehow, you can’t get yourself to finish it.
Most of us have been in a situation where we think of a career change and start
GiRL-on-The-Go
working towards it. We send job applications, meet prospective employers and schedule interviews during office hours, and at the same time, secretly pray that our current employees don’t find out. Your boss has been in the industry longer than you have, so it’s obvious that he/she has friends in the industry and it’s easy to find out what employees are up to.
Bad-MouThinG Don’t bad mouth your job or your company. If you hate it so much, just quit. It’s not difficult to gauge your attitude towards your work. It will come across in your work, your participation during meetings and your willingness to be proactive. Bad mouthing your company, especially within the office is even worse. Walls have ears, and if they are office walls, they can talk too!
ThaT ‘GiRL’ PRoBLeM If you think you can get out of any office situation simply by telling your workplace that it’s ‘that time of month,’ think again. While it’s alright to say that once in a while, when you’ve got a really bad case of PMS or really can’t help an unplanned situation and have to go change, it’s not a good idea to use this as your go-to excuse. People will begin to catch on, especially if you’re using it to take a few days off every month.

>> Teaching your children how to handle money from a very young age will make them financially responsible as they grow older
« 5 Ways to: give your
dresser a makeover You may have had an old, worn-out dresser in your home that’s too sentimental to throw away. So, instead, Shirley Mistry tells you how to give it a makeover 1. chanGe The knobs This is the easiest way to add personality to your dresser without going all out. There are several ornate drawer knobs that you can buy if you want to give it a vintage look. You can also pick porcelain, hand-painted ones. If you want to shift the dresser to your children's room, you can opt for knobs in the shape of animals.
Not just child’s play Of all the things children are considered to be too young to understand, financial matters are high on the list. But, if you want your children to have good financial habits later on in life, it is essential you teach them these important lessons from the beginning, says Dev Goswami
A
s parents, we are aware of the need to teach our children important lessons that will benefit them as they grow older. Surprisingly, you won’t always find matters related to money among this set of lessons. Children are the most impressionable when they are young, so the habits that you inculcate right now will last them a lifetime. We’re helping you out by giving you tips to help educate your children about finance, according to different age groups.
The GrowinG years (3-10) The way you deal with your children during these years will determine their outlook towards money during their teenage years, as well as their spending habits when they start earning their own money. Keep the following points in mind: Delay gratification The problem with instant gratification is that you’re telling your children that they can have what they want, when they want it. As they grow older, this will lead to impulsive spending habits and make it hard for them to understand the concept of savings. Learning to save The earlier you teach them the importance of savings, the better it will be for them in the future. You can do this by dividing the money
they get from relatives and on birthdays into two separate jars/ banks — one called ‘savings’ and the other called ‘spending.’ Don’t allow them to use any money from the savings jar. This will help your child see that if they save money regularly, it will eventually turn into a substantial amount. handling money Once your children are over 5/ 6-years-old, you should teach them about handling money in the real world — with your supervision of course. Remember that while schools might teach children how to add and subtract in rupees, they won’t teach them how to actually handle the notes and coins — something that you can do on your next shopping trip.
The TeenaGe years (11-16) These are the years when you’re likely to see a number of demands, tantrums and complaints about how you, as a parent, are ‘doing everything wrong.’ These tips will help you out: no means no This is a tip that will help you deal with several problems arising out of their adolescent angst. However, you need to teach them that what you decide is final. No matter what tantrums they throw, do not change your decision once you’ve made it, especially when it comes to matters related to money.
work for it Instead of giving them fixed pocket money, make them work for it. Send them grocery shopping with a fixed sum and tell them that they can keep the change. You could even assign tasks such as washing the car in a certain amount of time for a certain sum of money. All these tasks and chores will ensure that they don’t think of money as… well, free. reduce your support While you can’t expect your children to pay their school fees or buy their own stationery, when it comes to going for a movie with friends, tell them that they’ll have to save their pocket money or use the money that they’ve earned from doing various tasks. At the same time, make sure that you keep tabs on their expenditure and money habits — not giving them money might sometimes cause them to make bad choices, so make sure that you are on the lookout. banking basics Once your children are 15-years-old, teach them the basics of banking. Send them to banks for tasks such as depositing cheques and updating passbooks. Let them type out letters related to financial matters and teach them the basics of real-world saving tools — insurance policies and public provident funds (PPFs). This will not only make them knowledgeable about financial matters, it will also show them that you trust them with responsibility.
>> Paint your dresser in a bright colour to revamp it 2. Go ombre If you want to change the appearance of your dresser, pick a colour that suits the décor of your room (pastels are trending) and paint the first drawer with it. Add a little white and paint the second drawer. Keep adding white so that each drawer is lighter than the previous one.
3. aDD some fabric To switch things up, take out all the drawers and stick interesting fabric on the sides, so that when you open them, the fabric peeks through. 4. QuoTe iT up This one is quirky, but is one of our favourites. Paint the entire dresser with a white or off-white matte paint and using a black marker, scribble your favourite quotes across the drawers. Don't worry about it being too neat; it will look rustic and cute even if it is a little messy. 5. Do away wiTh The Drawers If you want to revamp your dresser completely, remove the drawers and replace them with wicker baskets. This works well if you are looking for a storage unit for your children. Label each basket so that they can clean up after themselves and learn to take care of their things too. Besides, it looks so adorable, you’ll want to do this to all your dressers!

No Compromise! Relationships are all about compromises. However, there are certain compromises that you should never make for your partner. Yamini Walia gives you a few instructions about what not to do, in order for your relationship to prosper

I turn 40 this May and I am looking forward to it. I have had a very good time in my thirties and I am grateful! I want to start the new decade well.
I have been thinking of a short vacation... somewhere sunny and relaxed. Just my husband and I, or even just by myself. With time to think and just relax and be!
... and into our home. But, my husband has been bringing up my birthday with this maddening grin he does almost every year around this time.
>> Read on to find out what you shouldn’t compromise on in a relationship
B
eing in a relationship is not easy. A healthy relationship means that both people have a sense of freedom. A relationship is about respect and love and so, you shouldn’t constantly have to compromise on what you are. Don't abandon things that are important to you, emotionally or materialistically. The whole idea is not to lose your own identity in a relationship. Read on to find out if you are compromising a little more than you should for your partner.
a Secure future In today's day and age, being independent is a must. You never know when your partner might decide to separate and leave you without any financial support. If you have a dream career, make sure you work towards it without any compromises. Be as independent as your partner is for a secure future.
your family Never give up your family because of your partner. You owe them a lot because of the several compromises they make for your well-being. So, family should always be your priority. You might marry someone who might try to separate you from your family, so be careful in such situations in order to make the right choice.
your friend circle Friends are an essential part of everyone’s life. Your friends need you as much as your partner does. Everyone needs a
little girl time. So, whenever you have free time, devote some of it towards your friends. Don't end up in a scenario where you lose all your friends because of your possessive partner.
My boyfriend was recently laid off at work and he has decided to use this time as a sabbatical. I was fine with that... untill I realised that the sabbatical meant calling me up and saying ‘I am bored’, even when I am at work! Lately, he has even started landing up at my office a little before I am done for the day so that we can go ‘hang out.’ This is not only disturbs me while I’m working, it has
And I know... despite what I want, it is going to be different. Coming home, reaching to open the door, my husband giggling and finding a room full of people behind the door, with a huge cake, with everyone shouting out ‘SURPRISE!’
all the control Don’t let him control the entire relationship. Make sure you have an equal say in all the important decisions that concern your lives. Don’t let him decide everything you need to do, because in the end, you will have to deal with the consequences. If you are not ready for something, learn to say no!
your appearance There are certain men who will always expect their wives to look perfect, even if they themselves don’t. Your partner should accept you the way you are, especially when it comes to how you look! If your partner wants you to change your appearance and look a certain way, then you are clearly in the wrong relationship.
your freedom Your partner should not make you feel guilty about doing something that you enjoy. You should have the freedom to do whatever you want and be whoever you want to be in a happy relationship. If you have to think about the consequences of living your life to the fullest then you are in the wrong place.

is urge him to take up a hobby he has been meaning to or explore. If this still doesn’t deter him, have an honest chat with him. As many as 11 artists participated in the show. Needless to point out that the paintings presented were in various styles, colour schemes. The curators, recognising the aspiration of the artists to display their works presented an opportunity to them. It may be pointed out that quite a few curators are taking interest in art and artists and helping them in the sale of works. RADIP MAITRA is a talented artist from Kolkata. He selects unusual themes and enhances their appeal by making changes in them as per dictates of his imagination. Recently he did a series of paintings with steam engines – the good old steam engines. The new gives place to the old. New things happen. There is not much resemblance between the steam engines of the past and today’s trains. The steam engine paintings the artist brought to Mumbai narrates the artist’s romantic encounters with steam engines and wagons. These are paintings in stations, those galloping away. The engine looked different in scorching sun and drenched in rain. He takes a railway engine as a living entity. He watches the engine undergoing morning rituals and getting readied for long journey. And it returns after the day’s toil – tired and exhausted, the engine returns home. Surrounded by poor, hungry, shabilly dressed men, women and children, the artist went on sketching and painting the engine from various angles. The artist can be contacted at C-122 Survey Park, Santoshpur, Kolkata700075

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2014 How does it feel to be the winner of such a prestigious show? I am extremely elated but the feeling hasn’t sunk in yet. I am walking on clouds and pinching myself to believe that I have won the grand prize. I am extremely thankful to ZEE Marathi for giving me this opportunity to prove myself as a singer.
Did you expect to win when you began in the show? At that time, winning was not my aim. I wanted to give a good performance, impress the judges and the viewers and to do better than my fellow contestants was foremost in my mind. I didn’t know anything about public voting metres or the calibre of my contestants, but I went ahead and gave it my best.
The popular reality singing show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' on Zee Marathi recently conducted its grand finale where Pune student Juilee Joglekar won the show and was crowned ‘Mahagayika.’ She was awarded a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh and a memento at the hands of eminent singer Hariharan. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Juilee about her triumph. Here is what she said:
TV TATTLE ‘The Avengers’ series
JUILEE JOGLEKAR CROWNED
‘MAHAGAYIKA’
How was your parents' reaction on your win? They are proud of me. Their tears of happiness are still flowing. They have been my support system throughout the show. I handed over my prize money and memento to them and they were overwhelmed with pride. I will utilise the money for my future education. Who in your opinion were your closest competitors? I believed all the 14 contestants were good but I am thankful to those who voted for me especially from
my hometown Pune. Jayant Pansare and Reshma Kulkarni also sang well.
Which songs that you sand do you feel did the trick for you? I sang some fast western style numbers which gave me the epitaph 'Rockstar'. Especially my lavni number ‘Ata Vajle Ki Baara’ was much appreciated. Also ‘Mala Mhantyat Punyachi Maina’ was much appreciated. How was the judges' reaction towards you? All were nice and
encouraging, especially Taufiq Qureshi Sir and Avdhoot Gupte Sir who really kind and mentored me. Do you wish to be a playback singer? Yes. Certainly in the future I would like to be a successful playback singer. But at present I am doing my degree in Pune and would like to continue my education along with my passion for music. Juilee seems set to embark on a successful music journey...after her education that is!

In an exclusive freewheeling conversation with NEIL JOSHI, Australian all-rounder and Rajasthan Royals skipper SHANE WATSON dwells on bypassing the numerous controversies of the Royals team, the lows that hit the team during the spotfixing case and on how he will take the unit forward after superstars Shane Warne and Rahul Dravid left their rich legacies in the Pink City’s franchise.
SPORTLIGHT
The Australian team fielded one of its strongest sides in the T20 World Cup, but performed way below expectations. Has the bowling department been depending too much on southpaw spearhead Mitchell Johnson? No, we haven’t depended too much on Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell was just coming back in our T20 team anyway because of the selection. The biggest challenge we had was to adapt to the conditions in Bangladesh and we just didn’t do that quickly enough. It’s simple as that. It’s so important in a T20 World Cup to start the tournament well, hit the ground running. Unfortunately, we just didn’t do that. We were slightly off with what we were doing. We didn’t adapt quick enough. Once we lost the second game to the West Indies, the tournament was over for us. It was extremely disappointing. As a team, we certainly got to learn from our mistakes. We made quite a few mistakes throughout that tournament. But we can’t put that down to Mitchell Johnson. He certainly would have provided a huge impact to our team. But we shouldn’t be just relying on just one player to be able to turn our fortunes around for us.
You have been with the Rajasthan Royals since its inception and now you have been given the baton from Rahul Dravid. How different were Shane Warne and Dravid in their leadership skills? Can you narrate an example or so. I’ve been very lucky to be able to work under such incredible captains. Warnie in his own right, and what he was able to bring to the Royals, with his innovative thinking, his way of being able to really bring a group together very quickly like he did especially, I saw it with my own eyes in the first year. That was one of the reasons why we were so good, it was his ability to bring a team together, to specify roles and really back and trust the players within the group. So I learned a lot from Warne. And also seeing Rahul and how he carried himself, how he operated, how he is specific in making sure that we always matched up really well against the opposition, and were always

create. I know there’s a lot of players who love the environment that we are able to create, young guys or older guys like Pravin. So, i certainly haven’t had to do anything to encourage them, they are just so excited to be here on their own.
Did you feel players like Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila involvement was the lowest point for the Royals teammates and its franchise? How did the boys cope up with that? I certainly was shocked. We as a team are really a family. When those three players came out involved in spot fixing, I and everyone associated with Rajasthan Royals certainly felt betrayed. We certainly were doing everything possible we could to give ourselves the best chance of winning games. This situation I have not experienced before in my playing days. This horrendous situation brought us as a team closer than what we were before. From every bad experience, one learns a lot. One learns from such challenging situations and gathers a lot of strength from them. We certainly did. The new guys and we all in the game know what is right and what is wrong and if you do the wrong thing it will be found out. Everyone knows what the rules are. There is not going to be added emphasis on what we can do and what we can’t do. Everyone knows where the lines are and we have to make sure that we never cross it. Coming to captaincy, you would be donning the captain’s hat for the first time for the entire season, how do you rate your team. Are you missing big list players? I know we have got a high number of quality young talented batsmen. I have seen what Unmukt Chand had done in the Under 19 World Cup final. He is a man of incredible talent. We have got Karun Nair who is a young powerful batsmen I am sure they will get an opportunity to show their skills at some stage. We have quality all-rounders in Rajat Bhatia, Stuart Binny and Abhishek Nayar. It’s great as a captain to have so many options. We have got Ankit Sharma a really impressive left arm orthodox bowler. We
BETRAYED, BEATEN BUT NOT BOW(L)ED OUT finding ways to be able to challenge the opposition every time we played. And that’s just on the field. So, I’ve been very lucky to be under these couple of guys. The one example that really stands out to me was the first time I really worked with Warne when he was captaining me in the first IPL at Rajasthan Royals. I remember as bowler in T20 cricket, I was always concentrating on trying to bowl a ball they don’t score off, or just get a one and not get you for a boundary. But Warne immediately totally turned that around, he told me that I am not worried about a dot ball or that one run ... he wanted to know how we are getting this batsman out. And from that moment on, it completely changed my mentality and to the way how I looked at bowling in general. So that’s how Warne operates, and that’s why he’s such a great captain, and such a great bowler as well is because he’s always thinking about taking wickets, which in the end stops the momentum anyway! About Dravid, there are couple of games in the Champions League where Rahul put the team in front of himself. Even in the last game against Mumbai when we were chasing a big score, he put Sanju Samson to open and put himself down the order as he thought it’s the right thing for the team at that time. That takes an incredible man to be able to put the team in front of your ego as a person, to realize that it was the best decision for the team. That’s one example of the quality of person that Dravid is.
also have Pravin Tambe and we’ve seen what he can do. We have got Deepak Hooda who is a right arm off spinner. We have got a lot of different bases covered. It depends on the match-ups against the oppositions and the team that we are able to line up for each of these. We are really looking forward to have a great team make up and everyone we have got has some serious talent.
The Royals have usually gone for less high profile players and revolved around the same bunch, how much has that helped you in growing as a unit? We’ve got, in my thoughts, the strongest squad we’ve ever had for the Rajasthan Royals. We’ve got really hard quality options and a back-up for every position in our team which we haven’t exactly had every year in the past. So there’s no doubt we will be doing everything we can, like we have in the past, but we certainly got some pretty incredible players as well. We’ve been able to keep our core group that we had last year which was very important as part of our strategy for this year and then we’ve also been able to complement it with what we’ve had last year as well. But that certainly doesn’t guarantee the success we had last year because the opposition is going to be even stronger than last year, but we’re certainly giving ourselves a good chance for things to go right anyway.
INTERVIEW
The Rajasthan Royals throughout the seven editions have been in some kind of controversy on and off the field, whether the ownership issue or the spot-fixing saga. Now with the Supreme Court almost terminating the franchise, but not doing so just to offer it some respite, how difficult is it to manage and get the best out of the team members and guide them psychologically? It hasn’t been difficult at all. Everyone is excited to be a part of Rajasthan Royals because of the team environment they’ve always been able to create. Talk to everyone who’s just come into the RR squad, but also the previous years as well, everyone who has been part of the team loves the team environment that we are able to
Amit Mishra is an important inclusion given he being a big turner of the ball. How important will his role be in the UAE? Amit Mishra is a highly skilled leg spin bowler and has done a great job for Hyderabad and Delhi in the past and he did a brilliant job for India in the recent T20 World Cup. He’s been a match winner for those teams in the past. There’s no doubt that there will be spinning conditions whether it is in the UAE or India. He certainly is going to be one that we will have to use very well in the first game against Hyderabad but they’ve also got some pretty good bowlers as well in their team to be able to try and negate us as well. So, he certainly plays a huge role in the team’s success.
Almost the entire Indian squad hasn’t played in the dessert state, while Australia and Pakistan have had a few encounters, how do you rate the wicket and the conditions there? Continued on pg 30 «

Yeah, the conditions are very good. There’s no doubt. I’ve played one day cricket and T20 cricket as well. It’s fairly similar to certain sub-continent conditions that you play in. Here in India, there are certain conditions which are quite similar. There’s no doubt that Indian players will adapt very quickly. It will be interesting to see what conditions are really thrown up, whether it’s overseas players or Indian players, they’re skilled enough to be able to adapt really quickly to what’s thrown at them. What kind of players you feel will come in play amongst your players? It depends on which team we are playing against, depends on the fitness of players and the strategy of the team, batting bowling combination of team, ground conditions etc. As mentioned earlier, it’s great as a captain to have so many options. We are really looking forward to have a great team make up.
Which team do you feel looks the strongest? I think Sunrisers did the best in the auction to get the team together. No doubt, Chennai is always going to be extremely strong and they are one of the tough teams to beat in every IPL. But I believe that if Sunrisers will pool all their talent together, they are certainly going to be a difficult team to beat. What new moves would you bring in to the squad as a captain? It will certainly take the focus off my individual performance which is only a great thing. The game can really engulf you at times as an individual player. But as a leader and as a captain, my focus will be to get the best out of everyone around me, on the field and off the field. I know how lucky I am to be a part of such an incredible franchise and I am
honoured to be able to have the opportunity of captaining Rajasthan Royals. It will help me grow as a cricketer whether it’s individual performances or not, and I believe that I’ll be able to grow cricketers and individuals around me. In the end how I am able to contribute to a collective performance is more important than focusing on individual performance. Individual performance will be there and will be quite strong but I’ll focus more on the collective team performance. Do you feel you are missing big hitters in the lower order? We’ve got them!

BU DHABI: Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni feels adjusting to the conditions in UAE will be the biggest challenge for his team though he expects the twotime champions to at least reach the semifinals of the seventh Indian Premier League (IPL). "There are players who are coming from the Asia Cup in Dhaka, some even from New Zealand. The challenge is the ability to adapt and perform quickly," Dhoni said ahead of their tournament opener against Kings XI Punjab here on Friday. Talking about the weather, Dhoni said: "Yes, the weather is slightly different when you compare to Mumbai or Chennai or Kolkata. It is hot and humid. But Delhi has very dry heat and this
place is similar to that. It will be a challenge. But sports people crib a lot initially. But you don't get bothered by it once we start to play." The Super Kings have retained the core of their team comprising Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Suresh Raina, West Indian Dwayne Bravo and Dhoni himself. The most successful team in the IPL looks a formidable force by also boasting the likes of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum and the dangerous Faf du Plessis from South Africa. Asked about his team's chances, Dhoni said: "Consistency at playing well and reaching the semi-finals is our goal firstly. We can't say we will win because all it takes is one individ-
ual to have a good day. The important thing is to reach the semi-finals, and you up your game a bit. "In knockout stages, you play to the best of your potential. That becomes crucial," the India captain was quoted as saying by the tournament's official website. The wicketkeeper-batsman reckoned it was good that Super Kings have not made too many changes in the squad since the cash-rich league began in 2008. "The good thing is, we haven't had so many changed players since season one. We try to retain as many as possible. And as a team, we lay down what each one's roles and responsibilities are. And we try to learn as we are making mistakes; we want to keep that low," he added.
Confident Anand Rohit’s one of the most natural captains: Wright looks forward to D re-match against Carlsen
NEW DELHI: The World Championship loss in Chennai had "knocked the stuffing out" of Viswanathan Anand but the fivetime winner said that clinching the Candidates title has boosted his confidence and he would try to avenge his loss to Magnus Carlsen later this year. Three losses over 10 games without a win and the world Championship title was in tatters last November but Anand soon scripted a historic turnaround when he registered three victories in 14 games without a defeat en route to his Candidates victory to earn a rematch against Carlsen. The 44-year-old Indian said delay in addressing his errors cost him the World title and it was his decision to stay away from chess, which helped him to recover emotionally and bounce back with a bang. "I think many errors had cropped up in my approach to play chess. I was becoming reliant on computers and there were some mistakes coming up. I was not oblivious to it but I was not able to address the problem exactly right. I didn't have time to fix anything," Anand, who was here to highlight the role of chess in Business Analytics in an NIIT event, said. "I remembered long back once after the end of an event, me and (Anatoly) Karpov were talking. He mentioned that a player who had a bad tournament will take long time to recover from bad result because he was so much in love with the game and he didn't have something else to take his mind off chess.
UBAI: Heaping praise on Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, coach John Wright said that the youngster was "one of most natural captains" and under-estimating him as a leader would be a mistake. "Rohit is one of those guys who just jump into the role and fit into it like a glove," Wright said. "His tactical decisions have been great, which is very important on the field. But leadership is all about performance, and Rohit has led the team from the front. He has done an outstanding job and I don't think he should be underestimated," he added. Wright, however, pointed out that as a defending champions' skipper, Rohit would face challenges. "He will always be faced with a challenge. This time, he comes in as the defending captain, which is not easy. But his captaincy adds a lot to this team, and what he has contributed to this team should not be undermined. In some of the big games last season, I don't think he put a foot wrong. I think he's one of the most natural captains I have ever met," Wright told the IPL's official website. Speaking on his team's composition and their options in the tournament, Wright said, "There's an air of expectancy. All the teams have a different make-

IN BRIEF High demand as final Cup ticket window opens
RIO DE JANEIRO: Governing body FIFA on Tuesday opened the final sales phase for World Cup tickets and reported 126,837 of 199,519 available for 54 of the 64 matches were snapped up within four hours. Brazilian nationals bagged two thirds of the latest sales, FIFA said, accounting for 80,496 tickets with 46,341 tickets going to fans outside the host nation on a first-come, firstserved basis via the FIFA website. FIFA added its ticketing pick-up centers in the 12 host cities would open from Friday, save for Brasilia and Porto Alegre, where they will only be available from next month. The organisation explained fans who have bought tickets can make an appointment for collection via FIFA.Com. From June 1, through to the final on July 13, FIFA said tickets can also be purchased over the counter at designated FIFA Venue Ticketing Centres in the host cities.
Gupta loses to Iturrizaga in Dubai finale
DUBAI (UAE): Grandmaster and former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta missed out on a podium finish after losing to Eduardo Iturrizaga of Venezuela in the 9th and final round of 16th Dubai International open chess tournament that concluded here. Having done all the hard work, Gupta fell at the final hurdle and had to be content with a fourth place finish on 6.5 points. Romain Edouard of France won the tournament defeating top seed Anton Korobov of Ukraine in the final round game. The French Grandmaster ended on a high scoring eight points out of a possible nine and this was amongst his best performance ever. Edouard, for his efforts, gets the winner's cheque of USD 10000.

up this time, and from our point of view, we have a core of players from last year as well as some new additions, which is interesting." On playing the first leg of the tournament in the UAE, Wright said his team was well organised. "Sometimes, combinations are governed by conditions, but that is not the case here. We had a look at the wicket and there was a bit
Mallya urges RCB to lift IPL-7 trophy
SHARJAH: Giving a pep talk to his players, Royal Challengers Bangalore owner Vijay Mallya today expressed his desire to see RCB lift the IPL-7 trophy. "It is up to you (RCBians). You can do it. You know you can do it. Just go do it, and we want to take that IPL-7 trophy in our hand this year, so good luck to all of you we have a great team, great atmosphere. We play hard and party hard too," he told players in an interaction on RCB's official website. RCB will kickstart their IPL-7 season when they take on Delhi Daredevils in Sharjah today. Before the interaction, Mallya was seen welcoming the players and other support staff, but he was seen warmly hugging RCB's new face Yuvraj Singh, who came in for heavy flak for his scratchy innings in the T20 World Cup finals against Sri Lanka.
of grass, so it should be a good wicket. Our selection should be very much what we had thought of. We're pretty well organised," he said. With departure of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Dwayne Smith and Dinesh Karthik, there are huge spots to be filled, but the coach feels that the absence of these players will present the uncapped cricketers such as Aditya Tare and Jalaj Saxena -- a chance to shine. "There is an opportunity there. Some of the big players are not a part of the setup now and we have some young Indian players who have a spot to compete for. Some of the guys are new, while some have been with us for twothree years, and now it is their time. I think that's the greatest thing about the IPL -- it creates an opportunity for a virtually unknown player to come in and make a name for themselves. Let's hope we have the right youngsters who seize that opportunity," Wright explained.
NEW DELHI: Rising woman pugilist Jamuna Boro took merely over a minute to book a pre-quarterfinal berth as Indian boxers continued their fine performance in the World Youth Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Boro won against Lesotho's Ntsike Mofalali in a Technical Knockout (TKO) in her opening featherweight 57kg bout. The Indian forced two knockdowns within two minutes of the bout's start which Mofalali could not withstand. In fact, the boxer from Lesotho collapsed in the ring when counting was on following the second knockdown after a ferocious display by Boro. Boro will now be up against the winner of the clash between Ukraine's Anhelina Bondarenko and Azerbaijan's Maryam Jabrayilova.
India men lost to Belgium in Europe tour
NEW DELHI: The Indian senior men's hockey fought hard before going down 1-2 to Belgium to succumb to their first defeat in the ongoing European tour at Naarden in The Netherlands. India had earlier hammered Leiden Hockey Club (Dutch National Club) 70 in the first build-up game at Oegstgeest, before playing out a 3-3 draw against HGC Hockey Club (Dutch National Club) in their next game of the tour, which has been organised as preparations for the FIH Men's World Cup 2014 to be held at The Hague, Netherlands from May 31 to June 15. In their match against Belgium late last night, the Indians started brightly but it was Belgium who managed to open the scorecard in the 17th minute when Tom Boon scored from a penalty corner.
