Rahul Narvekar, Shiv Sena’s most visible face and party spokesperson, moves out and joins NCP Rahul Narvekar with Deputy CM and NCP senior Ajit Pawar in Mumbai on Monday.
By Suyash Padate
I
n what is being seen as a major upset, Rahul Narvekar, Shiv Sena spokesperson and close aide of Aditya Thackeray, yesterday joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Narvekar, who recently withdrew his candidature from the state Legislative Council elections, joined the NCP in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other senior NCP leaders. He will contest the Lok Sabha election on the party’s ticket from the Maval constituency. Narvekar, who happens to be the son-in-law of senior NCP leader and former Min-
ister Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, was the Sena spokesperson and was adept at explaining the party line to the national media and electronic channels. He had therefore become the party’s face on most English language news channels since quite a long time. He was also seen as the Man Friday of party president Uddhav Thackeray’s son, Aditya, and was reportedly running the Yuva Sena with him. However, he had been apparently sulking over the withdrawal of his MLC nomination and had met NCP chief Sharad Pawar last week. Speaking to reporters after joining the NCP, Narvekar
said, “When people from your own party try to bring you down and make attempts to ensure your defeat, then you are left with no option. I was extremely hurt with the way Shiv Sena has handled certain sensitive issues, especially after my candidature was declared. I am disturbed about the withdrawal issue. I think my party should have clarified to me about it. Just because the Sena leadership kept mum, I was under the fire from all sides for no reason. Here I am making it clear that I withdrew my candidature after being told to do so by the Sena leadership. “The mental turmoil reached such an extent that I

Most of the erstwhile Sena leaders who left the party to join other political parties, for example Narayan Rane, have been given secondary treatment in that party. Moreover, those who switch parties at the last minute find the going tough as they get very little time to campaign under a new symbol
J
ust re-elected for a third term as a Member of Legislative Council, Dr Neelam Gorhe (60) is no novice in the field of politics, having been in active politics since 1987. She graduated from Poddar Ayurvedic Medical College as an Ayurvedic doctor in 1977 and practiced medicine for a decade or so, but her real forte was championing the cause of women's rights which led her to form the Stree Aadhar Kendra. Being a daughter-in-law of the famous Marathi literatteur Vin Da Karandikar and niece of the famous poetess Vijay Jahagirdar, the inherited genes are displayed in the fact that she has written 21 books on a variety of subjects and also submitted six thesis papers. Besides being a Sena MLC, she also is in-charge of the party's Pune district affairs and is the party's spokesperson.
Despite all these happenings within your party, are you still confident that your Mahayuti will come to power.
have a double challenge, from both the MNS and AAP. How do you rate your chances in the light of the fact that in 2009, MNS had damaged your electoral chances. These parties crave for visibility amongst the public. They are after issues that will give them that visibility. Sena has a very strong grassroots presence which is tried and tested. The AAP does not have that kind of presence. They look more ideologically confused. As far as the third alternative goes, their presence and vote share since 1990s has shrunk. Their vote bank has further dispersed among the various factions. The MNS is struggling to find candidates. The youth have realised now that voting for Raj is a disaster.
But the challenge this time is a multipronged one. How are you going to face it? We in Sena have been used to facing multiple challenges. Another added 250 complaints are received. Our advantage that the Sena has over its local Vibhag and Shakha Pramukhs rivals is the fact that it can rely on are instructed to tackle them. the work of its frontal organisations like Sthaniya Lokadhikar Samiti What issues will you include in your which works for employment rights election manifesto. and career guidance of Marathi Our main focus will be on how to re- speaking youth. WE IN SENA ARE USED TO FACING CHALLENGES
Just on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections your party had differences with your ally the BJP. Do you think it will have an adverse impact on the voters? If there are any developments two to three weeks before the elections, it does affect the psyche of the voters. As it is, the first phase of polling in Maharashtra is on April 10. From Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Shiv Sena spokesperson today it is still a month away. People are well aware that in alliance politics such things do happen and they do not attach too much of importance to it. Ultimately it all boils down to how your candidate presents himself or herself before the voters. How your local party worker interacts with people. Moreover, the work done by your party candidate or local leaders at the grassroot level finally speaks in your favour. Of late many of your sitting MPs and leaders have left the party-fold despite Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray tying them in a symbolic bond with the party's ethos using the Shivabandhan thread. The teachings of the late Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray and the hard work of Sena president Uddhav Thackeray were prime reasons for people to join the Sena. It has never been about achieving political power only. There are some people who become dissatisfied with what they have achieved, thanks to the party. In the case of MPs and MLAs who spend time in the opposition benches, they start thinking about their family members and become restless. Those in power need to show the committed voter of the opposition that all is not well in the political party that he supports. Hence attempts are made to split the Sena ranks on poll eve. The ruling alliance has always adopted “use and throw” policy. Most of the erstwhile Sena leaders who left the party to join other political parties, for example Narayan Rane, have been given secondary treatment in that party. Moreover, those who switch parties at the last minute find the going tough as they get very little time to campaign under a new symbol.

The BJP-Sena led alliance shall definitely come to power given the prevailing political mood in the country. People are fed up with the misrule of the Congress-led UPA government. The situation is similar to that in 1977 and 1989 when people were restless, they had lost patience with the government, then also they talked of corruption and inflation. Today also besides corruption, our sovereignty is under attack and the economyis in shambles. And there is a visible change in the process going on. The youth factor is significant one in this election. What plans does your party have to woo the politically articulate youth. We have set up our own election war room. Our youth leader Aditya Thackeray is interacting with the youth on a regular basis. There are some people who are trying to display false love and affection towards the youth. The MNS had tried to raise the anti-toll agitation and left it mid-way only to shake hands with those in power. Sena does not do these kind of things. It takes all its agitations to its logical end. Moreover, our cadres are willing to work for the youth. The youth today are more concerned about jobs, housing loans, business opportunities, industrial growth and an assurance that economic liberalisation will continue.
Women voters also constitute 49 per cent of the electorate. What is your take on women's safety issues. Shiv Sena has always been at the forefront in raising women's issues and we have a firebrand Mahila Aghadi. Our goal is to ensure that an atmosphere is created where women are free to move about without any fear or apprehension. Ours was the party which first started a toll free number for women. Daily around
frastructure you need the political will to do it, which only the BJPSena alliance has. Our emphasis will be on job creation, speeding up infrastructure projects, boosting industrial growth, addressing issues of women's insecurity, and those faced by the elderly who still happen to be a significant component of the electorate.
ditional BJP voters voted for the Sena candidates in that election. Of course the anti-incumbency factor is there, but the voter is quite wise enough to judge between what are national issues and what are local or state issues. Besides, this time around we have got new allies like the RPI-A whose support will definitely help us. Moreover, rapid urbanisation has helped the Sena to Unlike the last time, this time you expand its support base.
ADC IMPACT A Book Lover Speaks... I have often quoted an interview I gave to a Mumbai-based newspaper, Afternoon Despatch and Courier, in which the paper would ask the interviewee 20 standard questions and on that basis publish an extremely interesting and lively write-up. One question was “Mr. Advani, what is your greatest weakness?” My prompt reply was “Books; at a grosser level, chocolates”. It is this interview that has been prompting people who come to greet me on my birthday or any such happy occasion to keep adding to my personal library, which is now sizable. - BJP patriarch LK Advani As quoted on L.K.Advani's latest blog: http://blog.lkadvani.in/blog-in-english/how-association-with-rsshas-given-meaning-to-my-life

Mantralaya, raising antiNarvekar slogans. The police, however, stopped them from entering the NCP office premises. Reacting to Narvekar’s exit, Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe said, “Narvekar’s leaving the party and joining the
NCP won’t make any difference and won’t have any impact on us. He should have trusted the party leadership. The differences which he has mentioned would have been sorted out. But he took the extreme step. We will campaign for our candidate, Barne, in Maval.”
Police keen to abort escape attempt Continued from pg 1 « applied for anticipatory bail from Sessions Court, and was granted interim relief till April 3. Dr. Hemant Dugad, who is holding the post of District 1st Vice-Governor in the Lions Club, Mumbai, was arrested
after the Kasturba police, in December 2013, had nabbed two teenagers for dumping a five-month-old male foetus at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). During the course of the investigations, they found that a lady, who got her 17-year-old daughter to undergo an abortion, had paid the duo for disposing off the foetus. But later, all the accused related to this case were handed over to the Meghwadi police in Jogeshwari. When the police questioned the girl, it was revealed that her mother and the doctor were part of the conspiracy. According to the police, the girl is a class XII student of a women’s college in Malad, and is a resident of Jogeshwari. The girl’s boyfriend had deserted her after hearing about her pregnancy. “Fearing that her daughter would be ostracized by society, the girl’s mother decided to get the baby aborted. She approached Dr. Hemant Dugad, an Andheri-based medical practitioner, who runs Highway Medical Centre, a private maternity and general hospital at Andheri East and paid him Rs 25,000. Interestingly, to avoid any kind of controversy, Dr. Dugad didn’t name the girl in the hospital documents but used her mother’s name and cited her age as 32. In December, he operated on the girl at his clinic. The fivemonth-old foetus was wrapped in a plastic bag. The mother then handed over the bag to two teenagers - a 17year-old boy and Ajit Vishwakarma, 20, and paid them Rs 250 each to dump the foetus at the SGNP. When both reached the park, they were intercepted by the security guards of SGNP who called the police control room following which the Kasturba police reached the spot. According to PI Jeetendra Kamble of Meghwadi Police station who is the investigating officer in the case, “After questioning the girl, we found direct involvement of this doctor in many more such cases, but before we could arrest him, he got interim relief from the the sessions court till April 3. We will be strongly opposing his bail application. We have also informed the Lion’s Club authorities but no action has been taken by them against the accused doctor,” said Kamble. When contacted, Dr. Dugad refused to comment on the case, saying, “The matter is sub-judice and cannot be discussed.”

he Dadar police have arrested a security guard for killing his colleague, who was employed as a guard with filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya's office in Prabhadevi. According to police, his arrest has prevented another murder, as he had gone to Kolkata with the intention of avenging the murder of his cousin brother after committing the crime in Mumbai. According to the Dadar police, Mehdi Imam (76), a security guard employed by a private security agency, was deputed on contract to the office of Barjatya's Rajshri Productions. On March 11, he was

found dead on a loft in the pantry of the office. Imam used to guard the office at night and stay in the same premises, and the level of decomposition of his body suggested that death had occurred at least two days earlier, said police. The police had at the time registered a complaint of murder against unknown persons. “While investigating the case, we learned that one Totan Biswas (35), who was employed by the same security agency which employed Imam, used to come to the office every Sunday to meet Imam. We then made further inquiries on his
movements and found out that he had taken Rs.1,800 from his employers on March 10 and had been missing since then. We then probed further and found that he had gone to his native Kolkata, after which we sent a team there,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhananjay Kulkarni (Zone V). The police team then went to Kolkata and learnt abour Biswas' violent criminal background. They learned that last year, he had shot at his wife over a trivial argument and had been booked. Then his cousin brother had subsequently been murdered by his wife's relatives.
Further inquiries in Mumbai as well as in Kolkata also revealed that Biswas had withdrawn Rs.22,000 from his bank account in small instalments over a period of few days, and had given the money to his friend, telling him to buy a gun. “Considering this information police picked up Biswas from his aunt's place near the IndoBangladesh border on Saturday. He was lying low till he got the chance to murder his cousin's killers. He has said during interrogation that after killing Imam, he knew that he would be caught soon and decided to settle old scores before the law
caught up with him,” said Kulkarni. Biswas has said in his interrogation that on the night of March 9, he went to the Rajshri Productions office under the influence of alcohol. He then used Imam's cell phone to make a call, and Imam told him to use his own phone, which led to an argument. In the heat of the argument, Biswas strangled Imam to death and dragged his body to the loft, after which he fled the scene. Biswas was brought to Mumbai by a team of policemen on Monday and is being interrogated further, the police said.

he Anti-Human Trafficking wing of the Thane (rural) police, along with their counterparts from the Kashimira police station, busted a high profile sex racket on Saturday evening. While two notorious pimps, including a woman have been arrested, three young women, including a minor were rescued by the police team. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Senior PI Anil Kadam and API Atul Aher, established contact and struck a deal with the pimps through a decoy customer, following which a trap was laid near Karan Complex in Mira Road. “We planted a decoy customer, who was told by the accused that he would have to pay Rs.12,000 for four girls. Our decoy agreed to the deal. Subsequently a trap was laid and the accused were caught red handed,” confirmed Aher. The accused pimps have been identified as Rolen Hunter (40) and Hema Ma-

Azmi seeks suspension of cops who led midnight raid By A Staff Reporter
S
amajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi has demanded suspension of the police personnel
who allegedly led a midnight raid in Rashid Compound of Muslimdominated Mumbra, and said they will 'gherao' Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan over the issue on Tuesday. "I am seriously concerned over the manner in which police harassed the innocent and law abiding citizens of Rashid Compound at midnight and dragged them to police station as if they are criminals... This highhandedness by police is unwarranted," said Azmi, who is also the president of state unit of SP. In a 'combing operation' apparently to nab chain snatchers launched by Thane police in the wee hours of Thursday, more than 80 Muslim men were allegedly detained at the Mumbra police sta-
tion for over four hours, reports PTI. "This is not the manner in which the combing operation is carried out and police had even broken doors of some of the houses and created terror," he said. The detainees were released only after local NCP MLA Jitendra Avhad intervened into the matter. However, Azmi alleged that Avhad knew of the combing operation in advance. Azmi said he wanted policemen who participated in the action suspended and will 'gherao' the Chief Minister to press for this demand. After an uproar over the issue, Thane Police Commissioner Vijay Kamble has ordered an inquiry into the incident and the concerned ACP has been sent on leave.
suspected member of an arms dealer's gang has landed in the custody of the Nalasopara police late on Sunday night for possessing an illegal firearm. According to the police, following a tip-off, that someone would arrive in Nallasopara with a weapon, a team, led by PSI Parshuram Londe, laid a trap and arrested Mukesh Phoolsingh Rawal (45). The accused was found to be carrying a country-made revolver and two live bullets. “We are trying to find out the source of
the firearm and to whom it was meant to be supplied,” said Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Nikam. A case under the relevant sections of the Arms Act has been registered against Rawal who has been remanded to police custody.

Fishermen in distress F
OR years now, Indian fishermen have been prosecuted by Sri Lanka in the South and Pakistan in the West for carrying on fishing. The Sri Lankan navy intercepts Indian boats and takes them to Sri Lankan ports. The hapless fishermen are arrested. Quite often, the Sri Lanka navy opens fire and kills them. They claim that the Indian boats stray into Sri Lankan waters and carry on fishing. Indian fishermen keep claiming that they are well within Indian waters and they have a right to do fishing. Clearly there is a dispute with regard to where the Indian waters begin and end. It should not have been difficult to fix the limit beyond which Indian fishermen cannot go. This however has not been done. On the West coast, fishermen from Kutch and other coastal areas are continuously harassed by Pakistan's navy. Hundreds of fishermen have been languishing in Pakistani jails for years. Efforts by the Indian government do not appear to yield desired results. The Indian government takes up the issue at the highest level, but it does not seem to have achieved desired results. What is to be noted is that our fishermen do not get the required assistance from the government. There has been no opposition by our navy in order to stop the atrocities committed by Pakistani or Sri Lankan navies. There is no reason why we should not initiate action. We should go to protect our fishermen. What happens is not just isolated cases, “but a systematic, continuing illegal, cruel operation” against our fishermen. Such incidents are reported almost everyday. What becomes clear is that we have not initiated enough diplomatic exercises. Our government does not seem to have taken up the issue earnestly. Recently, in the winter session of parliament, the matter was taken up and all parties urged the government to take action against foreign navies which are carrying on illegal action against our fisherman. What becomes apparent is that the matter has not been taken up earnestly at the diplomatic level. It should be possible to find a solution to the problem. Fix the limit beyond which the Sri Lanka's or Pakistan's navy does not have the right to stop fishing by India. This matter has to be taken up in earnest as many fishermen from India are facing distress and illegal action by foreign navies.

OW that all opinion polls predict a Modi surge, and a complete decimation of the Congress, the question before the self-styled secularist brigade is clear: How to stop the Gujarat Chief Minister from marching triumphantly into Delhi on May 16? The looming threat of a Modi prime ministry seems to have already unsettled the entire 10 Janpath Establishment. Even its known satellites and intellectual crawlers, who had made a career this past decade from marketing rights unmindful of growth and revenue generation, might be in a real funk. Small wonder then some of them have already jumped the sinking ship to seek accommodation on the Modi bandwagon while others are contemplating to follow suit. Yet, no election is won or lost until the votes are polled and the results declared. Even if it is an election which is Modi’s to lose, the greater responsibility to ensure that his party and others do not wittingly or unwittingly obstruct his passage to Delhi lies with him. He has to guard against the thwarted ambitions of senior colleagues, petty stubbornness of old and aging veterans still nursing ministerial hopes, and, above all, over-confidence. Complacency and arrogance can obstruct the march to 7 RCR. The objective being 272-plus, winnability will remain a key factor while selecting candidates. Party leaderships can be excused for not vetting the credentials of candidates on the moral anvil for the simple reason that the voters seem to prefer them over selfavowedly clean contestants. An Ambedkar, a Tata or a Gandhi would not have come a cropper in the polls in the past if the voters at large were truly mindful of the personal demeanor and character of various candidates. They are not. They too are swayed by myriad other factors. Therefore, it was fruitless to rake up the controversy over tainted candidates. The Reddy brothers were tainted much before they joined and left the BJP. And if that did not stop senior BJP leaders from patronizing them, it should matter little after they had been thrown in the jug by a vindictive Congress Government. Why, how is Jaganmohan Reddy of the YSR Congress any the less tainted? He too is charged with massive corruption, he too has spent time in prison in connection with the corruption charges. If it is okay to woo Jaganmohan Reddy for a pre- or a post-election alliance, it is hypocritical to make an issue of the alleged illegal miners of Bellary, especially when one had embraced them to one’s bosom not too long ago. Maybe, then, it is the sour grapes rather than any concern for higher moral values that

made some senior leaders to rake up an avoidable controversy over tainted candidates. Pragmatism in politics has always trumped idealism. Not now. Always. Even the Mahatma, it should be noted, was a great realist. He did not allow either emotion or morality to come in the way of achieving the goal he had set for himself, that is, throwing out the colonial power. If the name of the game is winning elections, all parties would field candidates who stand the best chance to win. Period. The tainted Pawan Bansal got the 10 Janpath nod not because he is not widely suspected to be himself involved in the jobs-forcash scam in the Railways. No. Because the Congress reckons that it has no better candidate in Chandigarh to face
when the party on May 16 is down to a very humiliating score of 70-odd seats. Whether that lowest-ever tally will mark the beginning of the end of the Gandhi dynasty’s control over the Grand Old Party, as the well-known commentator Surjit Bhalla seems to believe, or the start of its rejuvenation and renewal remains to be seen. But remember that the Congress was started by a foreigner some 129 years ago. Hopefully, its obituary will not be written when the Italian-born Sonia Gandhi still presides over its destiny.
Bruise marks belie suicide theory
A
NEWLY LAUNCHED magazine, India Legal, edited by former India Today executive editor Inderjit Baar has splashed pictures of Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of central minister Shashi Tharoor, with tell-tale injury marks on her body. The magazine claims these pictures were taken soon after she was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a seven-star New Delhi hotel. The pictures reveal severe bruise marks on upper parts of her body. The writer raises doubts about the suicide theory, suggesting that there could well be an underworld/ IPL link to her death since she had threatened to reveal the truth behind her taking the rap for the so-called sweat equity in a short-lived IPL franchise. Was the rosy picture created by the management a few days back only to fool the investors or this warning now a false alarm or another gimmick from the company to beat their guidance in future?
Whatever might be the reason I feel such strategy is unethical and the company or its boss should utter concerns or good news at quarterly intervals when they announce their results or guidance after giving due notice to investors and stakeholders to avoid creating a panic in the markets. Murthy is straightforward and honest apart from being the company's biggest shareholder. While we appreciate his transparency, certain ethics need to be followed as billions of investor money is at stake. Narayan Murthy I am sure would take the right steps to mend the concern in the days to come and CANDID STATEMENT: It was a big one hopes shareholders of Infosys blow for investors when the Infosys chief, would have reasons to smile N.R. Painting the entire media with the same brush may not be right but then what Kejriwal said about the media bias may not be totally wrong too. Even a common news watcher can sense that all is not right as has been projected. Kejriwal has till now proved to be a smarter "politician" than the other seasoned campaigners. By raking up the point about media bias he has got two birds with one stone viz.
garnering more coverage than his opponents and second bringing the media functioning into serious discussion. Let's not ignore the point that many in media may question the way this point is raised but many will also agree that all is not well in the media too.

Gavaskar’s comment on coach outdated Sunny Gavaskar seems to have been in damage control mode and he is not able to provide tips to improve the standard of the game in India, instead he is finding fault with the coach, Duncan Fletcher for the non-performance of Team India. He should have plunged into action to give much needed impetus to the dying spirits of the team. Simply blaming the coach for the pathetic show is not in good taste. By giving the name of Rahul Dravid as coach, Gavaskar is going backwards. The game of cricket has improved leap and bounds. A player like Rahul Dravid cannot do anything good for the team's chances of winning. Our overseas performances were bad even during his time. We lost the World Cup 2007 under him in the first round. It was indeed intriguing why Binnay was played in one game while Pujara was overlooked. failure and it would have been much better if Rohit Shrma was asked to open with Dhawan and the number three place given to Pujara. As a batsman, Pujara is very much like Dravid and has shots all round the wicket, particularly square cuts and drives off the backfoot. Continued from pg 11 « for a while because their form of treatment included cutting off half of your tongue! While it's a treatment used today for oral cancer, it's done under general anesthesia and only in extreme cases. Needless to say, the treatment wasn't very successful.
>> People in Indonesia believe that lying on train tracks will cure them of ailments
CroCodile dung: Back in the day, condoms and contraceptives were a pretty alien concept, but people had to find some way to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Unfortunately, the method they devised was incredibly unsavoury. In ancient Egypt, crocodile dung was their go-to contraceptive. How? Well the dried dung was actually inserted into the vagina to form a barrier! When that method lost it's charm, people used tree sap, lemon, cotton and sometimes even wool — none of which were even close to being the safer option. ArseniC: How can something as poisonous as arsenic have been used as a medical treatment? Well, before we knew it was poisonous, medical practitioners touted it as part of medicine, especially traditional Chinese medicine. A patented cure for malaria and syphilis called Fowler's Solution was used all the way to the 1950s! CrystAl Meth: Walter White from Breaking Bad would've made a pretty penny in Hitler's time. Ever wondered where the German leader got all his energy from? A noted hypochondriac, (he may not have known it), but he was addicted to the drug. In his time, the drug was thought to be a sort of vitamin and he was regularly injected with methamphetamine (crystal meth) which made him more alert, active and ready for a fight — literally. PArAffin wAx: Forget Botox, doctors in
the 19th century were sure they had stumbled upon the perfect cure for wrinkles when they used paraffin wax injections to smooth them out. This worked for several years, until the theory fell flat when they tried to use it for breast augmentation. Injecting it into women's breasts formed large, painful lumps.
goAt testiCles: If you've just eaten a
heavy breakfast, you may want to skip past this point. A man named John Brinkley stumbled upon a gold mine when he claimed (without having any medical qualifications of course) that goat testicles were a cure for impotence and infertility. How did they work? Well, the testicles were cut off from the goat and surgically implanted into the scrotum of a man. Gross, right? The most surprising part is that this was not a medieval practice, as it existed in the 1900s in America! It was dangerous and sometimes fatal, but still made him one of the richest doctors in the country!
sAve the flAtulenCe: Here's another strange practice that was used during a very serious epidemic called the Black Death. It killed thousands of people across Europe, but because it
was thought to be caused by deadly vapours, some doctors believed that fighting fire with fire was the best option. They advised people to save their flatulence — yes, farts — in a jar and sniff them to fight off the deadly epidemic vapours! It didn't work of course.
snAke oil: Travel around Asia and people will still tell you about the benefits of snake. It's known to have anti-inflammatory properties as well as omega-3 fatty acids, so it's no surprise that doctors in China have used snake oil for centuries as a medical treatment for joint pain. It's not too bizarre — but we're not sure how effective it is to date.
Blood-letting: This was a practice that
did much more harm than good, but it was still an incredibly common one. It involved taking several amounts of blood from a patient and was used for almost any disease or illness under the sun! Medically known as a phlebotomy, it's practised in a gentler, safer version today to get rid of excess iron in people's blood but at the time, even something like acne was treated with this.
MerCury: If you're the sort of person that >> Cutting half the tongue was said to cure a stutter
runs to wash your hands if your thermometer is broken for fear you've just been poisoned by the mercury, this will seem incredibly strange to you. The slithering silver liquid didn't always have such a bad rap and in fact, was used to treat almost any ailment for centuries! Whether you had constipation or a wound, rubbing mercury on your skin was a common practice. It is in fact, incredibly toxic and does lead to fatal poisoning, so perhaps that explained the high death rate.
trePAnAtion: When we found out about
heroin: So many things on this list can kill
getting over the crocodile dung and the goat testicles, you're not going to be happy with this one, but we couldn't leave it off our list. In Asian countries, (until it was banned in 1987 of course), people ate a soup made with dried tiger phallus. Why? To have tiger-like virility of course. After all, you are what you eat, right?!
you, so let's add another one for good measure. In the 19th century, far from being a taboo, lethal drug that can ruin your life — heroin was sold as cough medicine! So commonly in fact, that the makers of aspirin, Bayer, originally developed it. Makes us wonder how safe aspirin proves to be in the long run...
loBotoMies: Almost everyone knows
what a lobotomy is but if you don't, here's a quick explanation. Think of an ice pick prodding through your eye socket, all the way into your brain. Sounds ridiculously painful, doesn't it? As much as we'd love to tell you that this was all make-believe, the practice existed as a fad right up to the first half of the 20th century, as a cure for all sorts of depression and mental illnesses. And what's even more shocking is that the inventor was actually given a Nobel Prize!
lying on A rAilwAy trACk: Unlike most things on this list, this is a surprisingly recent practice, and it's not a way to stop the trains from running. In certain parts of Indonesia, as recently as 2011, people lay on railway tracks because they believed the electrical energy from the tracks would cure them of their illnesses! People claim that it works, but please do not try it. MAlAriA: Suffering from a bout of malaria is not uncommon in our city, but unlike people in earlier centuries, we don't celebrate when we get it. The deadly mosquito disease was actually used as a medical treatment to cure syphilis. The treatment was actually effective because fever did kill the bacteria, but we wouldn't want to run the risk of the malaria being fatal at the end of it all!
this medical treatment, we thanked our lucky stars that we didn't live in an earlier century. The torturous medical practice actually involved drilling a hole in your skull to cure disorders and mental diseases! It was supposed to get rid of the 'demons' in your brain and there are organisations today that still believe it could work. We're just glad it's not termed as medicine any more!
tiger PhAllus souP: If you're still
vAginAl MAssAge: Shocked? So were we. Before PMS became common knowledge, doctors were perplexed about what they called female hysteria, a condition where women were irritable, moody, uninterested in sex and extremely high-strung. These days, doctors will prescribe a good dose of activity and a balanced diet for a healthy sex life, to ease discomfort, and alleviate moodiness. But, in the Victorian era, doctors found a slightly different method to deal with it — the vaginal massage. Yes, women willingly went into doctors offices to get, quite literally, a vaginal massage, which was performed manually by the doctors. Of course, after manual treatments became a little too much, they invented the vibrator, which at the time was still a form of 'medicine.' toBACCo sMoke eneMA: You read that right. Enema's were quite a common practice at the time and the tobacco smoke enema was extremely popular during the 17 and 1800s. They would, literally, blow smoke up a patient's bottom using a contraption that included a rectal tube and fumigator with bellows. They used it for several medical practices, claiming that tobacco's stimulant properties (even smoking was a medical practice with cigarettes being prescribed to increase stimulation) could do a world of good — including reviving those who were unconscious! Ouch!

boost your brain >> An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but you need more than that to boost brain power

With final exams around the corner, you need all the brain power, sharpness and concentration that you can muster up. Shirley Mistry tells you what foods to include in your diet that will help you improve your memory
W
Salmon, trout and mackerel are all rich in omega-3. What they do is work on the brain's cognitive function, thereby improving your ability to think and process.
ith exams looming over your head and hundreds of pages worth of notes to understand and remember, your brain is working overtime. However, eating certain foods can help you stay focussed as well as improve your brain power and concentration. What could be better than eating your way to a stronger mind? Your intake of these foods coupled with your preparation, is a winning combination on hand.
bananas & sunFlower seeds
carbohydrates
blueberries
Complex carbohydrates, unlike those found in refined flour, are actually good when it comes to boosting concentration. Snacking on a whole wheat muffin before an exam will boost your brain power immensely. Peanut butter with carrot sticks is another option. However, remember that only certain carbohydrates are beneficial. Eating a candy bar containing peanuts or a bowl of spaghetti before an exam will only make you feel sleepy.
In a recent study carried out by Tufts University, it was found that while blueberries don't directly work on improving your memory, brain power or concentration, they still help you indirectly. Blueberries aid with the slowing down and improvement of short term memory loss, thus helping you retain information. So, snack on these wonder berries before an exam.
sage For the longest time now, sage has been known for its memory boosting powers. While most of the time the herb is used as an oil, it is a good idea to add some sage, either fresh or dried, to your diet in the days leading up to an important exam.
green tea While you may be tempted to make yourself a cup of coffee or two, we suggest you don't. Although coffee in limited quantities can make you alert and help you focus better, if you have a cup too many, you will end up feeling rattled, your mind will feel scattered and you will find your ability to focus failing. Drink some green tea, instead. It is known to boost your brain power and improve your concentration without giving you excessive doses of caffeine. It also has lots of antioxidants, which only add to its benefits.
Fish Omega-3 found in fish is excellent for your concentration, so be sure to get your fill.
Both bananas and sunflower seeds are rich in dopamine, which is known to improve your motivation to study as well as your concentration levels.
blackcurrants & yellow bell peppers For years, vitamin C has been known to boost brain power. Instead of opting for the trusted orange, try blackcurrants and yellow bell peppers instead — both of which have much more vitamin C than the fruit.
almonds & pumpkin seeds This list cannot be complete without the mention of almonds. Even as children, you were always fed almonds as they help make your brain stronger and increase concentration. Turns out, your mother was on to something, as both almonds and pumpkin seeds contain zinc which is vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills.
carrots Apart from doing your eyesight some good, carrots are also great for your brain. A component called luteolin, found in carrots, slows down memory loss and maintains overall brain health. Also, carrots help reduce inflammation, which helps you think better and remember information for longer.

oney and cinnamon, like most healthy foods and spices, are beneficial by themselves, but when combined they are even more powerful. Cinnamon in large quantities isn't as healthy, because a certain type of cinnamon contains cassian that when consumed in large doses can cause liver problems. However, if you buy Ceylon cinnamon, you can use it for flavour, medicinal and health purposes. With honey too, opting for pure, raw, organic honey that has not been heated up, is your best option if you're trying to stay healthy. The combination of honey and cinnamon helps reduce cholesterol, as they lowers your levels on their own as well, so you can imagine what it does when combined. Each ingredient
also contains several anti-inflammatory properties, which minimise pain caused by arthritis. If you've got an upset tummy, having a spoonful of honey and cinnamon not only improves your digestion in the long run, it will also alleviate gas and ease tummy aches. All you have to do is combine it in a glass of warm water and drink it on an empty stomach. That seems like a lot of benefits already, but we're not done! Although there's not a lot of research done related to honey-cinnamon and fatigue, there have been several cases where people have found the combination a good remedy for feelings of exhaustion — so it doesn't hurt to try this out yourself. The combination is also a good topical treatment for hair growth and
a known remedy (in hot water of course!) to cure a common cold and get rid of skin infections because of its anti-fungal properties. People who suffer from diabetes can replace sugar with honey, but should think of combining it with cinnamon because it has been known to reduce blood sugar levels and has nutrients that help keep heart diseases at bay. And, if you've got pimples, honey and cinnamon can work as an effective remedy to get rid of them. So, drizzle the combination over your breakfast, drink it with warm water, or add it to your meals to get the most benefits out of this power packed combination. And, you could even have a spoonful after each meal, to keep bad breath away!

Bottom’s up!
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 2014
Sitting at a table or desk to read this article? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why sitting for long periods of time is terrible for you. Take this quiz to find out if you need to stretch your legs
S
taring at a computer screen all day is not new to any of us. We spend so many hours working our butts off (figuratively) but we're rarely bothered about what's happening to our bottoms with all the time we spend sitting down. If you don't already know what a desk derrière is, you should stand up and pay attention. Sitting at a desk all day makes your muscles shrink and break down — it's equivalent to getting little to no exercise, which leads to layers of fat developing on your bottom that are hard to get rid of. Not only do your muscles get stiff, you are also putting yourself at risk of heart disease, depression and high cholesterol. So, take this quiz to find out whether you're at risk and follow our steps to get your butt back in shape:
Mostly As You spend so much time on your bottom that you're probably at a high risk of putting on weight and being unhealthy, if you're not already! Your knees might creak when you get up too quickly because your muscles just aren't used to movement any more. Read our tips below and get moving as soon as possible.
>> Having long conversations on the phone while seated comfortably is actually bad for your bottom. Pace around the room instead
Mostly Bs Although you're not actively trying to be healthy, you aren't at a high risk of getting ill because of the amount of time you sit. You do get an adequate amount of movement in your day, but with time, this will cease to be enough. Continue doing what you're doing and supplement it with a little exercise to stay on the right track. Mostly Cs You're not at risk at all! You have a healthy routine and because of your active job, you don't spend as much time on your bottom as most people. Don't stop doing what you're doing, but read our tips below anyway to see if there's a way that you can get healthier than you already are.
Does your job involve several hours spent at your desk? a) Yes, I barely have time to get up for lunch. b) I try to get up once in a while. c) My job involves a lot of running around.
Do you go from car to your office and back to your car? a) Yes, I like to travel in comfort. b) I take a bus or a train. c) I walk for a little while before using public transport.
Do you sit down when you're talking on the phone? a) Of course! b) If I'm already standing up, I don't make an extra effort to sit down. c) I walk around the room while I talk on the phone.
When you have to talk to a co-worker, do you email/ IM (instant message) them? a) Yes, it's more convenient. b) When I’m feeling lazy, I talk to them from across the room. c) I walk over to their desks and talk to them.
After you finish work, do you go home and sit in front of the television? a) Yes, I need to put my feet up and relax after a tiring day. b) I have to do a lot of housework before I can relax. c) I exercise/ walk after work. Do you sit down to chop vegetables or cook your meals? a) Yes, I have a comfortable stool in my kitchen. b) Only when I'm exhausted. c) I stand when I am cooking.
get your butt back in shape F ound out that you are at risk of health problems and fat accumulation because of your bad sitting habits? Don't panic. A few of these easy tweaks will help make sure that you're getting a little active even if your job requires you to sit at your desk all day long.
tAlk stAnding: Whether you're asking a colleague about something work related or making a phone call, don't do it sitting down. Walking and talking is the easiest way to get a little active without even realising it. stAnd onCe in A while: In between your work day, make sure you stand up from time to time. It may look strange to keep standing up in front of your monitor, but even five minutes every two hours will make a big difference. And who knows, your co-workers may take a leaf out of your book and start doing it too! tAke the stAirs: At home as well as at work or in a mall, don't use the elevator. It's a simple way to get a little activity into your day after spending most of it on your bottom. No matter how tired you are, walking up and down the stairs at least once a day is a must. In fact, it will make you more active too!
get off At An eArlier stop: Take the bus to work? Simply standing at the bus stop to wait for one won't help. Get off at an earlier stop and walk to and from work. Even if you travel by car, you can park slightly further away and walk to your office. don't keep everything At your desk: We know how convenient it is to keep everything you need at your desk, but that's not good for your bottom. Keep things at a distance so that you have to get up when you need them. shop At the MAll: Shopping online might be tempting and incredibly convenient but it's not good for your wallet or your bottom. Get yourself to a store — you'll find that you shop less and move more! stAnd & Cook: Don't sit down to chop vegetables or marinate meat, no matter how tempting that may seem. Standing to cook is great, you'll get in more activity than you think! sit properly: Even when you do need to sit down, make sure your bottom is behind you and your torso is relaxed and upright at the same time. Slouching forward or leaning back too much can cause fat to accumulate quicker than usual.
Do you take the stairs often? a) No, I take the lift or use the escalator. b) Only at times or when the lift isn't working! c) I use the stairs instead of the lift very often. Do you do all your shopping online? a) I can't remember the last time I visited a shop. b) Only when I am unwell or too busy to go shopping. c) I prefer going to an actual shop to make most of my purchases.
>> Instead of talking to your colleague from across the room, walk over to his/ her desk

Sculpt your butt Y
ou've been spending a lot of time concentrating on your abs, thighs and wobbly arms. But, while you may have a body that you are proud of, are you self-conscious about your sagging butt? If you are, try these exercises which will concentrate on your gluteus medius, gluteus maximus and hamstrings — all three of which are important for a firm, well-shaped derrière.
Did you take our quiz on the previous page and find out that you need to pay more attention to your behind? Dev Goswami comes to your rescue as he tells you about a few exercise you can do to get the perfect derrière
hip-lift progressions If you're troubled by your back, this exercise comes in handy as it will not only work on your butt, but will also relieve stress in your back. Lie on your back with your arms at your sides, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. l Now raise your left leg up in the air, point it towards the ceiling (not straight up though) and simultaneously raise your hips so that your butt and your back are up in the air. From the feet to your shoulders, your body should form a single line. l Hold the position for a second or two and then return to the starting position. l Repeat with the other leg and do reps for around a minute. l
toe taps This exercise is one the best exercises to firm up a loose bum. >> To get a shapely and firm behind, include these exercises in your daily workout
Lie on the floor in the same starting position as you would during hip-lift progressions. l Raise both your feet up in the air till your knees are at an angle of 90° — this is your starting position. l Now slowly but with the same speed, bring down your left foot and tap the floor using just the toes. l Raise it back up and simultaneously tap the floor with your right foot. l Repeat, alternating between the two legs, for a minute. l
single-leg front raises Incorporate this exercise in your routine to improve your balance, work your thighs and of course, sculpt your butt: l Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold dumbbells in both hands (you can substitute them with 500ml water bottles). l Raise your left foot a few inches above the floor and keep it off the floor for the
duration of this exercise. l Now bring both your arms in front of you, at chest height. l Extend the right arm all the way up, above your head. l Bring it down and repeat with your left arm. Continue alternating between arms till you've done four reps with each arm. l Now, lower your left leg, raise the right leg and repeat the arm swings.
pile Over a period of time, the pile has become a part of almost every butt workout. So, it is obvious you need to perform it too. Here's how: Stand with your feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart — make sure that your toes are pointing outward. l Raise your arms in front of you to chest level. l Now lower yourself into the lowest possible squat — up till the point your knees are just in line with your feet (they shouldn't go past your toes). l Keep your torso straight and look straight ahead — hold this pose for a few seconds. l Go back up and repeat for a minute. l For more intensity, you can pulse up and down for a few seconds when you are in your squat. l
Kettle ball sWing This exercise is great for your shoulders as well as your butt. While your shoulders initiate the movement, it is your butt that dominates during the actually swing, making it a great toning exercise. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a kettle ball with both your hands and bring it in front of you at chest level (you can also use a dumbbell by holding it with one hand). l Now bring it down and swing it all the way behind you by moving it through your legs. l Don't loose the momentum and in the same action, bring it back up. l In case you are using a dumbbell, switch hands after around 30 seconds. l l

The brand has been brought to India by Farraz Patel who is the managing director of Smile Labs Cosmetics Private Limited. What sets Smile Bar apart from a routine trip to your dentist is that it aims to give you treatments that are quicker and cheaper by using the latest technology and treatments from Smile Labs. One of the signature teeth-whitening treatments that is
available at Smile Labs in USA and one that you can hope to see here, is the three step process which uses a peroxidebased whitening gel that has been specially formulated by Smile Labs. This is then followed up with their signature Applia System that takes care to ensure that your gums, lips and cheeks are free of the gel so as to avoid irritation and sensitivity issues. The last step in this process is using a teeth whitening accelerator light that activates one of the components of the gel to fasten the process. Another thing that sets Smile Bar apart is its setting of a
lounge instead of a scary dentist’s office. Their outlets play soothing music in the background, the whole ambiance has been designed to give a relaxing and luxurious vibe. While we haven't tried their treatments (which they promise won't take more than 15-minutes), we can say that the concept does sound tempting. They have opened up in Bandra and will soon open up an outlet in Andheri as well.

redefining stem cells
A new set of guidelines introduced by the Indian Council of Medical Research has redefined the use of stem cells and its association with the word ‘therapy.’ Dev Goswami tells you more What are stem cells? Our body has a number of cells — red blood cells, muscle cells, brains cells, amongst many others. If you consider each cell to be a plant, then the stem cell would be similar to a seed. Stem cells have the ability to divide and develop into several different cells. The most important thing to note here is that under certain conditions, stem cells can become or be induced to become organ specific cells. For example, under certain conditions, it is possible that a stem cell can be made to turn into pancreatic or heart cells. At the same time, there are body organs — the gut and the bone marrow — where they regularly divide and multiply to replace worn out tissues. Now that you've understood what stem cells are, we are sure you are beginning to understand the theory of stem cells as medicinal cure — they can be used to repair or replace diseases-afflicted tissues and/ or organs. Diseases such as cancer and birth defects are thought to occur in between the process of a stem cell multiplying into a specific organ/ tissue. So, using a new/ disease-free stem cell should to treat the condition, if we were to talk in crude terms.
Not there yet While stem cells hold promise, they can’t be classified as medical treatments. That’s what the ICMR aims to clarify with its new guidelines, explaining in a press release, “Every use of stem cells in patients outside an approved clinical trial shall be considered a malpractice. It is hoped that this clear >> The use of stem to cure definition will serve to curb the malpractice of diseases is still being studied. So stem cell ‘therapy’ being offered as a new tool don’t be fooled by phrases such for curing untreatable diseases.” as stem cell therapies The guidelines exclude haematological, immunological and metabolic disorders for which stem cells have been established as tem cell therapy — what's wrong with of the terms. Recently, the Indian Council of help treat a disease is a concept that is still standard medical care. They aim to ensure that term? Nothing, right? You're Medical Research (ICMR) released a fresh set being researched and studied. So, doctors/ that patients aren't taken for a ride by probably thinking that it is one of those of guidelines in order to curb the physicians/ clinicians cannot offer ‘stem cell practitioners promising them results with new-age medical treatments that you keep malpractice of stem cell use. According to therapy.’ Before we give you the details, a stem cell ‘treatments’ or ‘therapies.’ In fact, it hearing about. Well, you are right and wrong. the guidelines, the term stem cell cannot be basic understanding of stem cells would is not just India, most countries use stem It is definitely new-age medicine, but it is not used with a word such as ‘therapy.’ It help you understand the move — which at cells with the word ‘research’ and a ‘treatment’ or a ‘therapy’ in the true sense basically suggests that using stem cells to face value, appears counter-productive. not ‘therapy.’

Ankit tells us, “Splash cold water on your face. Take one tablespoon of your scrub and gently massage it all over your face and neck, avoiding the area around your eyes. Don't apply too much pressure and do not keep scrubbing for more than two minutes. You may scrub a little harder on the T-zone of your face.” Take a look at how many times he suggests exfoliation, according to your skin type: normal skin: Twice, or three times a week. Dear barbara, I don't use dark nail polish and I make sure that I get a pedicure regularly. But, I still have thick, yellow nails that I find embarrassing because they look unsightly! Despite taking good care of my feet, I am not able to get rid of the yellow tinge. What could be the problem? — ridhima kaur, bandra (w) Dear ridhima, Generally, it is dark nail polish that causes your nails to discolour, but in your case, I suspect it is the pedicures that are causing the yellowness, which could actually be a fungal infection. While it is great that you take good care of your feet, the problem lies with the tools that may have been used to carry out your pedicure. If unclean, it becomes easy to transfer the fungal infection via tools. The only solution is medication, so visit your doctor soon. But, note that it will take up to a year for the existing yellow nail to completely grow out. Also, henceforth, carry your own tools when you go for a pedicure.
>> Your itchy skin could be caused because of the change in weather
Dear barbara, For the past week or two, I have been experiencing really itchy skin. Although I do moisturise regularly, the itching hasn’t subsided. What should I do? — namit Singh, mahim Dear namit, Itchy skin is caused by many things, right from dry weather to bug bites or mild skin infections. In many cases, itchy skin is actually a healing mechanism for your body. So, don't be too alarmed. Instead, try wiping the area with a cotton swab dipped in vinegar. It is an alkali and helps calm the irritation in your skin and reduces the itching that accompanies it. If you have itchy patches all over your body, pour two cups of vinegar into your bath and soak in it for 15-20 minutes. If the symptoms persist, visit your doctor immediately. A
ll kinds of events are organised to celebrate International Women’s Day which falls on March 8. The Kalabharati and Khayal Trust hosted celebration at the Mysore Association in the city was of a completely different kind. “We look at it as an opportunity to focus on the strengths of women in the field of music,” said Kavita Shanbhag who comperes the show every year. “Every year we have at least one thematic presentation depicting the spirit of womanhood and a string of solo performances by leading women musicians. The unique feature of this event is that even percussion artistes playing drums like the tabla or the pakhavaj are women. That adds colour and flavour to the programme,” she said. This year the festival began with a theme related presentation entitled ‘Dhundo Bare Saiyan’ which showcased the heroes of the classical Sanskrit poet/playwright Kalidasa as seen from the point of view of their respective heroines. The research was done by Leena Doshi,a Sanskrit scholar and the compositions were by the Gwalior Gharana exponent Neela Bhagwat who herself sang one in the raga ‘Des’. There are certain subtleties which come only through rigorous training,” says Kuber. Vidya Dengle, a leading violinist from Pune is a visual artiste too. Dengle was initiated into violin playing under the guidance of the late Prabhakar Pandit who was a composer as well as a violinist. Dengle later shifted to Delhi where she studied under Zahoor Ahmed Khansaheb of the Delhi Gharana for a number of years. She also trained under the ethnomusicologist Ashok Ranade who gave her a new perspective on the ragas and the instrument. She played the raga ‘Bhairav’ a morning raga, on Sunday morning. Her melodious song ‘Sehra’ in Bhairav was fitting for the time of the day. The festival concluded with a performance by Bharati Vaishampayan, another highly talented veteran singer based in Kolhapur. Vaishampayan is an exponent of Nayak(Basant Kedar) and Mrinal which is fast becoming extinct. the Jaipur Attrauli Gharana. he teachers and senior students of Bharata College of Fine Arts and Culture, presented the Gati Festival where they presented selected items from the repertoire of Bharata Natyam and Kathak on the successful completion of nine years of the festival. They received expert guidance from Dr Sanddhya Pureccha for their performances. It was interesting to watch the teachers, who rarely perform, dance on stage. The programme was conducted at the mini P.L. Deshpande auditorium. Rajendran Naidu a senior lecturer at the college, performed a number on the Lord Shiva devotee Nandanar with commendable ‘abhinaya’. Nandanar is an outcast but a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. He is forbidden from entering the temple and the statue of Nandu obstructs the vision of the Lord. Nandanar is disappointed and prays ardently for a vision of the Lord. He is shocked to see that Nandu slowly moves away so that Nandanar can get a vision of the Lord. He is thrilled by this miracle and thanks the Lord profusely as he expresses his sincere devotion. It was a pleasure watching Mandeera Tracy Chaudhary perform the Javali with subtle expressions of love. Chaudhary has a fine stage presence and delves deep into thematic expressions. Chetan Saraiya’s Kathak performance was powerful for the depiction of Meera, the ardent devotee of Krishna as also for dramatic portrayals of episodes like Draupadi Vastraharanam. Saraiya one among the few male Kathak dancers in the city can scale great heights as a dancer with his passion and zeal. The seniors performed numbers like the Kautvams, Thaye Yasoda and Kalai Thuki.
ashwantrao Chavan’ directed by veteran director Jabbar Patel has been superbly researched and written by senior journalist Arun Sadhu. What could have been another boring documentary was saved by Patel, who infuses life into each frame. The film traces the growth of Chavan born in a poor farmer's family in Karad. Chavan was the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra who was responsible for getting Bombay a separate statehood and secession from Gujarat. He was a long serving CM and a loyal statesman of the Nehru family. He served as the Defence Minister during the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-China wars and later as Home Minister and then as a Finance Minister when banks in India got nationalised. In the film, a young Yashwantrao who has a great thirst for learning wears nationalism on his sleeve. He is jailed several times during India’s freedom struggle. His penchant for eloquent free flowing speeches and a moderate attitude plus his affinity for the fine arts grabs the attention of veteran national leaders like Nehru, Morarji Desai and Indira Gandhi. He gets an opportunity to become the President of India but, like in his favorite classic, ‘Julius Caesar’, he is devoid of any major

AFTER SANGAKARRA, JAYAWARDENE ALSO TO QUIT T20 AFTER WORLD CUP
46 D
SPORTS
HAKA: Sri Lankan batting stalwart Mahela Jayawardene will retire from Twenty20 Internationals after the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. International Cricket Council announced the news of Jayawardene's decision on Twitter."SL legend @MahelaJay to join @KumarSanga2 in T20I retirement after the #wt20 2014," a tweet from the ICC said. The decision came a day after another Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara announced quitting the shortest format in the international circuit after the Twenty20 World Cup. The 36-year-old Jayawardene has appeared in all four T20 World Cups till now and 2014 event in Bangladesh will be his last one. He was the captain of the Sri Lankan team which lost in the final of the last T20 World Cup at home against the West Indies. Jayawardene has played 49 T20Is to date, scoring 1335 runs at 31.78, with a strike rate of 134.17. He has one century in the format a 100 which is also his highest T20 score which came against Zimbabwe in Guyana during the 2010 World T20. He has scored eight half-centuries in T20 international matches. Jayawardene made his T20I debut in June 2006 against England at Southampton. He led the Delhi Daredevils side in the IPL last season but found no buyers in
Broad avoids questions on Pietersen DHAKA: England's T20 captain Stuart Broad wasn't very forthcoming on answering questions about the controversial sacking of batsman Kevin Pietersen as he evaded the query giving a completely roundabout reply. When asked about how much the issue of Pietersen, whose international career came to a dramatic end following England's dismal Ashes tour of Australia, and sudden retirement of Graeme Swann has affected the team, Broad said, "Lack of experience is not a problem. We don't have too many experienced T20 players, but there are lot of them who play Tests and ODIs. You have Michael Lumb, Eoin Morgan and Luke Wright, who have played in T20 leagues all over the world," the skipper went on a different tangent even refusing to utter the word 'KP'. Broad did agree that this current T20 squad is "slightly different from what it was some six months ago". "We have guys who are keen to learn. There are some, who can stand up and deliver like Bopara, Morgan and Alex Hales, who recently was the No.1 T20 batsman in ICC rankings. In Test matches, you do need 8-9 guys to perform but not in T20," he said.
Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara
the players' auction this year. The ICC tweet also had a photo of both Sangakkara and Jayawardene posing together with the writing on the background: 'Last World T20. Let's make it count'. Asked about the retirement of the veteran duo from T20Is, Sri Lankan opener Lahiru Thirimanne said, "They (Sangakkara and Jayawardene) are great cricketers. It will be difficult to match them." 2015 WILL BE MY LAST WORLD CUP: SANGAKKARA Having announced his retirement from T20 internationals, Kumar Sangakkara said that he would like to call time on his ODI
career after the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The veteran Sri Lankan batsman termed it a "natural progression". "As far as ODI and Test cricket are concerned, it's hard to make a time frame. I am 36 years old now and will be 37 next year during the time of World Cup. By next World Cup, I will be 41 and I don’t hope that I am playing then. So 2015 World Cup will be my last. It's a a kind of natural progression," Sangakkara said during an interaction during the open session of Sri Lankan team. "For Test cricket, form, fitness and enjoyment factors are there for you to continue. There is no
denying I am in the twilight of my career," he said. With Mahela Jayawardene also announcing his retirement from T20 Internationals, the transition phase in Lankan cricket is about to start just like it happened in India a few years back. But Sangakkara felt that Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal are two players who will carry the Sanga-Mahela legacy. "I think it's going to be fine. If you look at Thirimanne and Chandimal, they are ready to play in any form of cricket," said the man who has played 122 Tests, 369 ODIs besides 50 T20 Internationals.

IN BRIEF Clarke suffering fractured shoulder
SYDNEY: Australia captain Michael Clarke's courageous century in the decisive Third Test against South Africa took on added significance today when it was revealed he played with a fractured shoulder. Clarke weathered a fearsome barrage of bouncers on the first day of the Cape Town Test this month, being hit on the forearm, elbow, shoulder and helmet in a fiery spell of shortpitched bowling by Morne Morkel. He went on to a make a pivotal 161 not out, hailed by many as the best knock of his career, to help his team deliver a 2-1 series victory. The results of scans released today showed he played with a fractured left shoulder that has ruled him out of the domestic Sheffield Shield final this weekend, where he had hoped to play for New South Wales against Western Australia. "Michael Clarke was injured as a result of being struck on the left shoulder during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town," said Australian team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris.
Pistorius ordered six new guns before shooting
PRETORIA: Oscar Pistorius was in the process of buying six guns at the time he shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, more than usually allowed under South African law, his murder trial heard today. The order for three shotguns, two revolvers, and a rifle had already been invoiced to the athlete when he shot Steenkamp on February 14 last year, testified gun licenser Sean Rens."The transaction was cancelled a month postincident," he said at the start of the third week of trial. South African law allows noncollectors to possess only four firearms. Rens said Pistorius "had a great love and enthusiasm" for firearms. The licenser said the athlete told him he once drew his gun inside his house at a suspicious noise, which turned out to be the washing machine.

Reliability fears temper Mercedes win
MELBOURNE: Nico Rosberg said Mercedes would have to work hard to improve the reliability of their new F1 car despite his emphatic win in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. While Rosberg was dominant in his fully functioning W05, his pole-sitting team-mate Lewis Hamilton lasted only four laps before a misfiring cylinder ended his race. World champion Sebastian Vettel was also an early retiree after power problems in his Red Bull, underlining this year's unpredictability as teams grapple with new hybrid technology."Despite our success, we also know that there is still some work to do," said Rosberg, who streaked away from third on the grid for a wire-to-wire victory."We saw over the weekend that reliability is still a concern and it prevented us from having a strong two-car finish."We have two weeks to improve that. I am very much looking forward to (the next race in) Malaysia and I would love to race again tomorrow." Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified from second place for violating fuel rules, in another illustration of the challenges facing teams this year. But McLaren were rewarded for getting both their cars to the finish line, with debutant Kevin Magnussen classified second and Jenson Button third after Ricciardo's disqualification.
K
HANTY MANSIYSK (RUSSIA): Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand played out a draw with Vladimir Kramnik in the fourth round but remained in sole lead to stay in contention in the Candidates chess tournament. On what turned out to be an easy day for the Anand, he played to the tunes of Kramnik for once as the Russian came up with some sterling preparation to keep the Indian at bay. With two victories in three games, Anand was in for a rude shock in the game against Kramnik as for the first time the Indian ace found his preparation wanting at the tournament. Kramnik was in control as black and this was the first time in four rounds that Anand’s preparation was not up to mark. Kramnik’s Vienna variation has been analysed extensively and Anand went for a variation which is conclusively drawn. Kramnik had analysed it well and better than Anand, something that the Indian ace might have hoped he had done better. As it turned out, Kramnik had the final word on the variation and the game was drawn in the middle game itself vide repetition of moves. The draw took Anand to three points out of a possible four and the Indian remained in sole lead. Kramnik remained in tow of Anand on two and a half points and the Russian is now joined by top seed Levon Aronian of Armenia on 2.5 points.
For the records, Aronian scored a remarkable victory over Russian Peter Svidler while the other two games in the fourth round were fought hard. Former world champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria signed peace with Sergey Karjakin of Russia while Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijain scored his first victory at the expense of Dmitry Andreikin of Russia. With 10 rounds still to come, it's an early call yet. Anand, Kramnik and Aronian might be fighting at the top for a berth as the finalist for the next world championship, but the likes of Svidler, Karjakin and Topalov are fighting it through. Topalov had no difficulties to keep the momentum against Kar-
jakin in an English opening game while Mamedyarov was at his best for once in crushing Andreikin with white pieces. While the easy draw may have hurt Anand, the Indian ace remains on course for one of the best performances of his life. Going by the trend, Anand will need two wins and draws in next ten games to emerge as the next challenger for Magnus Carlsen. But that will happen if the rest don’t match him on points. Results: V Aannd (Ind, 3) drew with V Kramnik (Rus, 2.5); Levon Aronian (Arm, 2.5) beat Peter Svidler (Rus, 2); Sergey Karjakin (Rus, 1.5) drew with Veselin Topalov (Bul, 2); Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze, 1.5) beat Dmitry Andreikin (Rus, 1).
