t is now discovered that some entries pertaining to money in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Balance Sheet for 2008 have been mentioned under wrong headers. Councilors raising doubts on the credibility of the report and professional capabilities of the accountants and auditors who signed it, are asking about an entry under ‘Interim receipts – Cash’ which has a corresponding figure of Rs.4,373,096,062 (Rs.437 crore!) This entry appears in Balance Sheet schedule B 17: Cash and Bank Balance as of 2008: and the amount in question (Rs.437cr) is nearly half of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) total budget Rs.900cr for 2013-14, and one-fifth of Thane’s total budget of Rs.1,900cr. “Incidentally, this report

umans round the world blunder in engaging all their time in merely acquiring intelligence at the expense of developing the all-important intellect. A serious lapse stemming from the failure to realise the distinction between intellect and intelligence. Intelligence is built by gaining information, knowledge from external agencies, from schools and universities, from teachers and textbooks. Distinct and different from intelligence is the intellect. The intellect is developed through your individual effort by exercising the faculty of questioning, thinking, reasoning. Not accepting anything that does not admit logic or reason. You must realise the difference between the two. And that any amount of intelligence gained cannot per se build your intellect. The intelligence acquired from external agencies is much like the data fed into a computer. Consider, a computer charged with a complete knowledge of fire extinguishers, firefighting and fire escapes. All the knowledge stored in its memory

“Intelligence is built by gaining information, knowledge from external agencies, from schools and universities, from teachers and textbooks. Distinct and different from intelligence is the intellect. The intellect is developed through your individual effort by exercising the faculty of questioning, thinking, reasoning.” cannot help the computer act on its own. If the room catches fire, it cannot escape. It will perish in the flames. Likewise, all the knowledge you acquire is of no use to you without an intellect. In truth, you need a powerful intellect to put the knowledge, intelligence gained to practical use in life. That explains why among millions of doctors graduating from medical schools only a few have discovered

life-saving drugs and surgeries. Have found the remedy for terminal diseases like tuberculosis or kidney failures through transplant. So too, millions of engineers have passed out of engineering schools but a rare few designed the Panama Canal or the Eurotunnel. It is the intellect in them that renders their performance outstanding. On the contrary, all intelligence sans intellect, besides lacking success and

progress ends up destroying peace and happiness in the world. Not realising the importance of the intellect in human life people make no attempt to develop their own. Instead, they merely indulge in acquiring intelligence through surface reading of others’ periodicals and publications. Few go into

the depth of any literature. Education has lost its meaning and purpose. For generations human beings have turned into intelligent robots. And traversed through life without awaring, much less enquiring into the meaning and purpose of life in the world. The world today is in a state of

chaos due to the perversion in human development − all intelligence and no intellect. That explains why even highly educated businesspersons, professionals and scholars become alcoholics, rave with foul temper, succumb to worry and anxiety. It is the mind that craves for alcohol. The mind that loses its temper. Again, the mind that constantly harbours worry of the past and anxiety for the future. When the intellect remains undeveloped and weak, it is unable to control the vagaries of the mind. The frail intellect looks on helplessly as the mind devastates the person. In such a condition the business, profession and even family relationship run into shambles. On the contrary those having developed a powerful intellect, with or without academic distinction, can hold the mind under perfect control and direct action to spell success and peace in life. The educational systems the world over must be held responsible for the debacle of the intellect. It is their primary responsibility to strike an equable balance between acquiring intelligence and developing the intellect. Only by maintaining this essential equation can governments be run, businesses conducted, professions practised and families live in peace and prosperity. The lack of intellectual sovereignty in humans has led the world to a terrible state. Nations indulge in hot and cold wars. Business houses, following sporadic views spluttered by management gurus with frail intellects, stagger and collapse. Families are torn apart with differences and divorces. Children with no direction are at sea. Confusion and chaos reigns everywhere. Extract from Governing Business and Relationships by Swami Parthasarathy. The author will be conducting a discourse on the occasion of Guru Purnima entitled Born in Captivity at Shanmukhananda Chandrasekarendra Hall, King’s Circle on Sunday 21st July 2013 from 11.30 am to 12:30 pm.

eptember 9 will see lakhs of Mumbaikars bringing Lord Ganesha into their homes. The eleven day festival sees thousands of idols being immersed in various water bodies in and around the city, including the sea, and the several ponds and lakes. Apart from the religious significance, there is also the matter of severe environmental implications. Many idols take months to dissolve in the water after they are immersed and this harms the environment. To prevent this, many citizens have been opting for eco-friendly ganpati idols made from paper pulp and tree glue, which gets dissolved in the water without causing any pollution. Sandeep Rajakosh, an artist by profession, who owns “Prathmesh Eco-friendly workshop for ganesh idol” took up this initiative three years ago, in order to make this world a better place. Rajakosh, who works in BMC’s Disaster Management department, and resides in Kaamghar Nagar (Chembur), has been making of eco-friendly Ganesh idols for the past three years. His family is also actively involved in the project. He says, “If people start keeping idols made up of paper pulp and tree glue instead of PoP, they can surely protect the environment to a very large extent.” Rajakosh, in his initial year made 75 idols; in the second year he got orders for 125 idols, and

She was the first mayor who officially started the immersion of idols in an artificial lake. Make a mixture of tree gum, sand, dry yellow grass, natural gum, clay, and papers. The mixture is first put in a mould (easily available at any Ganpati vendor) to give the perfect shape. Then it is kept for two days to dry. After the idol is removed from the mould, many times there are problems, with even breakages. Once the idol is removed it is given a touch up to make sure it does not break. Once the claying part is done, it is again dried up. On the fourth day, it is touched up with white colour. This year, a group of eight ladies from the “Bhagyalakshmi Mahila Bachat Ghat” has joined him in pressing and finishing of the Ganesh idols. Sanjeevani Patale, head of this Ghat, says “We are planning to tie-up with the NASEO so that underprivileged students and more and more ladies can be trained to make eco-friendly Ganesh idols.” Rajakosh has received an order from the Texas for exporting a six feet tall green Bappa. Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee also orders her green Bappa from him every year. He explained, “There are, in all, 12 departments through which the process of making the idol is completed. The main department of moulding and making

The Shree Aniruddha Aadesh Pathak (a sister organization of Shree Aniruddha Upasana Foundation), began making eco-friendly idols way back in 2003. In the first year itself they made about 300 idols and the numbers have just been growing! Last year, around 6,000 idols were created pan Maharashtra and this year too they are looking at similar numbers if not more. In Mumbai alone around 2,000 plus idols were sold last year. nflation has hit the prices of the plaster of paper (pop) idols, and rates have been hiked by 5 per cent. The regular size idols which are brought to households have seen an increase by Rs.200 to Rs.500, whereas prices of full sized idols favoured by mandals have been hiked by Rs.1,000. The

imitation jewellery and decoration on the idol are also responsible for cost escalation. The imitation jewellery, used on the 'mukut' (crown) has been hiked by Rs.300 to Rs.400. Amit Keni, an imitation jewellery designer for Ganesh idols says "With the hike in prices of the imitation jewelry and materials, prices of idols have seen a slight hike this year.”

s per expectations, the government yesterday extended the ban on gutka and pan masala across the state by another year. This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Home Satej Patil in the Assembly. In July last year, the state government had issued a notification banning the sale and consumption of gutka and pan masala in the state. That ban was to be in force till today. However, yesterday the government completed the formality of extending the ban for 12 months.

While speaking to reporters, Patil reiterated the government stance and said that gutka was one of the major reasons for oral illnesses, including cancer. The government therefore took the decision of continuing the ban. The manufacture, storage, sale or distribution of gutka and pan masala containing tobacco or nicotine as an ingredient, by any name in the market, is prohibited in the state in the interest of public health, the Minister added further. It may be recalled that the state government had attempted to ban gutka in 2002 and then in 2008, but had encountered several legal hur-

In the Legislative Council, intervening in the debate deputy chairman Vasant Davkhare directed the minister to take action against gutka producer Joshi who was doing roaring business in neighbouring Thane district. He wanted to know as to why the government was extending the ban by one year, every year and not imposing a permanent ban. Patil stated that the Centre had amended the central act which gives powers to FDA to impose ban on such harmful products for a year. He added that the state would urge the centre to

amend the law so that such food items are banned permanently. Patil added that earlier there was no ban on gutka in neighbouring state’s of Karnataka and Gujarat. However the two state’s have joined the long list of 26 state’s in the country which have banned sale and stockpiling of gutka thereby making transportation difficult. Ramdas Kadam (Shiv Sena) wanted the government to apply provisions of MCOCA against gutka king Joshi. To which Davkhare again intervened and wanted to know from the government as to whether Joshi had any political connections.

Homeopaths’ hunger strike gains momentum Almost a hundred homeopaths have been on a hunger strike for four days in a determined bid to have their demands fulfilled By A Staff Reporter

T

he indefinite hunger strike started by the homoeopathic doctors from across the state at Azad Maidan, seems to be gaining momentum and intensity with every passing day. Failing health doesn’t seem to be a deterrent for these striking doctors. Around a hundred doctors have been on hunger strike since July 15, 2013 and out of these hundred, eight doctors, within four days of the hunger strike, had to be taken to state run GT hospital for immediate medical assistance. While Dr. Ranjit Purohit (29) from Vashim in Maharashtra was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of GT hospital for one and a half days, Dr. Sachin Gill (33) from Nalasopara, was in the general ward for a day. Both the doctors, who suffered complications due severe dehydration, were discharged yesterday along with the others. And the first thing they did after being discharged was getting back to their striking colleagues at Azad Maidan. “The ambulance will leave us at Azad maidan. We still haven’t eaten anything. We

were given only IV fluids. Our colleagues at Azad Maidan will collectively take a decision about us resuming the hunger strike. Their advice is of importance to us,” said Dr. Gill. “We are better now and will resume our agitation. We have to fight for the rights of our community,” said Dr. Purohit. “We are asking for what ever is rightfully ours. We know that it is now or never this time. Last time when we went on a strike, we were assured that our demands would be looked into but nothing was done. It seems that we are not important in the eyes of the Government. Almost a hundred of us are on a hunger strike and eight were admitted to the hospital. But the Government is showing no interest in resolving our issues and fulfilling our demands,” said Dr. Ganesh Jaiswal, a homoeopathic doctor from Bhandup. Having a separate directorate, to be given a chance to work in a government set-up, to be given the permission to prescribe allopathic medicines, and the inclusion of homoeopathy in the Drug & Cosmetics Act of 1940, are some of the 16 demands the doctors are seeking.

inister for Home R.R Patil yesterday informed the legislative council according to the State Director General of Police S.S Dayal that the state needs to create 61,000 posts for policemen to effectively maintain law and order during the annual festival season. Replying to supplementary queries about the notice given by Jayant Jadhav (NCP) regarding the installation of CCTVs for the 2015 Kumbh Mela at Nashik, he added that the government has plans to install CCTVs at Mumbai, Pune and Nashik. Commenting upon the installation of CCTVs in Mumbai, he stated that the lowest bid for the project was Rs. 950 crores. Patil stated that a committee headed by the state chief secretary was negotiating the terms with the bidder and hence there was a delay in installing these CCTVs in Mumbai. He also said that Rs. 338 crores have been allocated for CCTVs in Pune and Rs. 51 crores for Nashik. Patil added that the proposal worth Rs. 149 crores for installing CCTVs especially for the Nashik Kumbh Mela was pending before the state DGP.

He said that committee headed by the state chief secretary has submitted its proposal and suggestions from voluntary organizations in this sector have also been received. The minister stated that the government has been in the process of evolving a comprehensive policy for senior citizens. he increasing prices of real estate in the city have not spared even families, where members are now taking matters to the police. In a recent incident, a 90year-old woman has registered a cheating case against her daughter-in-law at Versova police station alleging that the latter has forged several documents and is now trying to the flat she owns away from her. According to the victim, Shankuntala Sawant, her daughter-in-law Indumati Sawant (58) who works with Air India is desperately trying to take over the flat in which she lives at Narita Apartments, Andheri on the basis of forged documents. Sawant alleges that after her son’s

bill of the flat on her daughter-in-law’s name, she realised that something was wrong. Sawant then approached

the Versova police in January this year but it was only after six months that an FIR was registered at the Versova police station against her daughter-in-law Indumati. However no arrest has been made till now. Speaking to the ADC exclusively, Sawant said, “I don’t want anything. I will sell this flat and go to my sister’s house and stay there. This is mental torture for me.” Sawant added, “The nominee for the flat is my daughter’s son who currently resides in Chicago.” Officials from the Versova police station however said, “We have registered a case under Sections 420,465,467 and 471 of the IPC for forgery and cheating. We have not made any arrests yet as we are first investigating the case.”

German bakery Now saffron smugglers! blast: NIA seeks T CCTV footage By Tariq Khan

Approaches Bombay High Court By A Staff Reporter

T

he National Investigation Agency (NIA) has approached the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) to provide it with a copy of the CCTV footage of the 2010 German Bakery blast in Pune. A division bench of justices V K Tahilramani and Mridula Bhatkar has posted the application for hearing on Friday. NIA, which took over the blast case at a later stage, had made a similar request before the trial court which was rejected. The agency has now approached the high court seeking copy of the CCTV footage from inside the bakery, reports PTI. According to the agency, the footage shows that the man who planted the explosive substance was Yasin Bhatkal, alleged founder of terror outfit Indian Mujahideen. NIA filed its application along with the death confirmation petition of Mirza Himayat Baig, the lone convict in the blast case in which 17 people, including five foreigners, were killed. On February 13, 2010, a bomb exploded inside the German Bakery, a popular eatery in Pune. In April, the sessions court in Pune awarded death penalty to Baig observing that it was a rarest of rare case. Baig was convicted under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and Explosives Act. According to the charge sheet filed by Anti Terrorism Squad, five others accused — Fayyaz Kagzi, Yasin Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal, Riyaz Bhatkal and Mohsin Chaudhari — are still absconding. The high court has posted the death confirmation petition and Baig’s appeal challenging his conviction for final hearing on August 5.

Bihar tragedy: Accident or H criminal case A

CCORDING to Bihar’s education minister, the mid-day meal tragedy was a ‘criminal’ case of poisoning. He said that the ingredients used for preparing the meal had come from a store which was owned by the principal Meena Devi’s husband Arjun Rai. The minister added that this man was ‘a member of a rival party’. Which is the rival party to which Arjun Rai belonged to? Evidently it is the Bharatiya Janata Party. What the minister probably suggesting was that the BJP in a bid to malign Nitish Kumar government had deliberately resorted to a monstrous step. He told the probe which will be held will reveal what actually led to the contamination of food served to the kids. It is clear, an attempt to politicise the issue is on. The Bihar government has started playing a political game by blaming rival parties for the dreadful happening in which 30 innocent kids have died. There should be an inquiry but it should be for finding out how the poisonous ingredients got into the food. What must have caused the poisoning must have been sheer negligence on the part of those entrusted with the work of preparing the food. The poison that got mixed in the food could not have come from nowhere. The guilty must be identified and punished. Instead of doing this, the education minister of Bihar in a bid to avoid any blame, is holding a ‘rival party member’ responsible for the crime.

The Hindu (June 25) pompously condemned Modi, claiming that “Uttarkhand has been reduced to a spectacle by competitive showing off, verging on the absurd”. “Nothing captures the black humour in all this as much as the drama around Narendra Modi’s much-quoted derring-do in allegedly pulling off the rescue of 15,000 Gujarati pilgrims.” To add insult to injury, The Hindu said “there was much exclaiming over a single determined man being able to do what the Indian Army could not”. The paper had followed the story closely and on the same date it published a report that quoted Rajnath Singh as saying that any such thing as what was attributed to Modi was wrong, considering that he himself had checked it out with the Gujarat Chief Minister. The original story had been written by The Times of India’s chief of the National News Features and editor of Sunday Times, Anand Soondas who told The Hindu that his source for the figure (15,000 pilgrims) was Anil Baluni, the BJP’s spokesperson in Uttarkhand.

eration for a long time and it is sickening to listen to the Congress ‘leaders’ making constant attacks of an abusive character on the Gujarat Chief Minister. He has been called Maut ka Saudagar, a Ravana, a Bhasmasura and of late a Rambo as well. All that it shows is a total lack of character among Congress leaders, starting from the party president herself. They are a standing disgrace to Indian culture and tradition. Happily there are decent commentators like, for example, Madhu Kishwar, professor, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies and Arvind Panagariya, professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University, let along others like Swapan Dasgupta, a well-known commentator. But, of course, there are also journalists like Kingshuk Nag, The Times of India’s Resident

Economic Times (June 26): “The Congress Party is understandable upset because its Chief Minister has proved a disaster, its party machinery is in disarray, Congress Sewa Dal workers are nowhere in sight and Rahul Gandhi’s Youth Brigade is clueless…” More importantly, Freedom First (July 2013) has carried a long (six pages) article by Kishwar in defence of Modi, which professional Modi-haters would do well to read for their better education. At the same time, I would like to draw everybody’s attention to an excellent edit-page article in The Times of India (June 29) in defence of Modi by Arvind Panagariya, insisting “the Modi economic model offers a compelling alternative to he mess at the Centre.” Let me quote some of the things that Panagariya has said about Modi:

Gujarat today

Gujarat today has by far the highest share of GSDP in manufacturing among all states. It also ranks near the top in urbanisation and electrification of households. If one goes by the progress made in education and health, Gujarat’s performance, especially in areas in which the problems were identified by the early 2000s, is quite respectable. Moreover, the leaders of states making faster progress, such as Tamil Nadu, are simply not in play on the national stage. But there are strong critics, not just of Modi, but of the BJP as well. Thus, writing in M.V. Kamath Mainstream (June 27) Kuldip Nayar damned Editor at Hyderabad who quotes people as the party as having changed by introducing Then came a further development. The saying that Modi is a feku, projecting a larger “pure communalism to the soft Hindutva that Hindu (June 28) claims that it had called Mr. than life image of himself. Midday meal tragedy: Nitish Kumar is in a soup THE death toll due to consumption of spurious midday meal at a government primary school in Bihar’s Saran district rose to 22. While 16 children, aged below 10 years and studying in Class I to V, had died in Chhapra itself, four others were declared dead on arrival at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH). Two died at the hospital later. Among the dead were two children of a woman cook of the midday meal project, Panno Devi. Three children of another woman cook Manju Devi are under treatment at PMCH along with her. Twenty five others are under medical supervision in PMCH, Superintendent of PMCH. The Superintendent said the ailing children were admitted to ICU of paediatric department and senior doctors were attending to them round-the-clock. The tragedy took place at the government primary school in Dahrmasati Gandawan village, 60 km from the state capital. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is in a fix.

THE news came in focus that soon Dance bars will reopen in Mumbai. I personally feel that its not so bad taste, what it was enlarged for the cause of the society. THIS is the most shocking, shameful and disgraceful that 22 poor children were given poison in their midday meal in Saran district of Bihar where still many are battling for life in hospitals. I strongly feel that the entire nation must hang their heads in shame for this national tragedy where poor children are being killed by the authorities for their own self-

ish personal gain without bothering about the law and humanity. The UPA government, which is more concerned about the food for everybody by having food security ordinance or the bill to be passed in the coming monsoon session of Parliament, must explain this tragedy rather than politicizing the issue with other political parties to blame each other for their political gain with the eye of the 2014 general elections. The urgent need of the hour is that shameless Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and his education minister P K Shahi must take the full responsibility for the tragedy. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

PRACTICE HELPS SCORE IN GEOMETRY ‘There is no substitute to hard work’—‘No grains without pains’—-‘Success is 99 per cent perspiration, one per cent inspiration’—these are some of the adages that you would have often heard and they do hold greed for every student of standard X. Students remember it’s just a few months—eight- in all that you have to prepare for your March 2014 Board examinations. Hence, it’s time to put your best foot forward and go at it with gusto. What is most important is that you have a proper plan of action. You have to manage your school and homework, assignments, journals, your tuitions or classes and most importantly the time that you put in personal study. Most of us know ‘what to study’, but the more important aspect of preparation is ‘how to study’ for the Board examinations. Maths is a scoring subject and with regular practice, any student can get good marks. Geometry is normally the area of concern. I will now suggest a few study tips for geometry.

Daily practice of maths for an hour a day is requested. This is besides your tuition and school time. Geometry can be done on alternate days. No oral studying only; writing is a must. Students must do the text book thoroughly. Most of the Board papers are set from the textbook itself. No chapter should be left out. Students tend to do this as they feel, questions based on chapters could be left out in the options in the paper. Only the first two chapters- Similarity and Circle have theorems. They should be studied thoroughly. All formulae should be learnt well, especially in trigonometry, co-ordinate geometry and mensuration. Weaker students must focus on the chapters which have numerical sums. Most of the question papers have numerical based sums. They must also do the chapters on geometric constructions thoroughly. While practicing geometry sums, always draw fair figures, no rough figures. This will help you grasp the sums easily. Make appropriate markings in the figures to help you memorise the sums, theorems or riders (Proof based Questions).

State should review its Mid-day Meal scheme T

he state government should undertake an audit review of the Mid-Day Meals administered to school children in the state, demanded Sanjay Dutt (Congress). Once you study the proof in this manner, you can substitute the angle names. (Please note that this method is not possible for all proofs.) So, students gear for a year filled with hard work ahead. Manage your time well, practice your maths daily and you will pass out with flying colours.

Tehsil in the Dhule district suffered vomiting and loose motions after consuming their mid-day meals. Out of these, 10 have been admitted to a local civil hospital in a serious condition. Dutt stated that although the state scheme is praiseworthy, in the light of what has happened in Bihar, the state needs to take an urgent review of the scheme implemented in the state so as to prevent such incidents from happening. The Legislative Council deputy chairman Vasant Davkhare directed the government to make a statement in the house over the issue.

anjay Dutt (Congress) yesterday demanded that the state government restart open elections to the University and College Senates. Raising the issue in the legislative council through a Special Mention soon after question hour, he stated that student body elections were banned in the state in 1993 by amending the Maharashtra Universities Act. Thereafter, the process of selecting students on merit basis to these bodies began. Due to this the students’ movement in the state over the last two decades has been weakened and has also adversely affected the process of throwing up good political workers through the student political process. Dutt stated that in order to imbibe the values of voting rights in colleges, the college level election process needs to be revived. This will give many students an opportunity to join the political mainstream. Dutt further stated that the process of college level and university senate elections based on the J.M. Lyngdoh committee recommendations should be started immediately. Legislative Council deputy chairman Vasant Davkhare directed the government to make a statement in the house over the issue.

EC announces elections to Aurangabad-Jalna Legislative Council seat on Aug 19 T

The Election Commission of India (ECI) yesterday announced the elections to the Aurangabad-Jalna Local Authorities constituency seat in the Legislative Council to be held on August 19. The election has been necessitated because the term of membership of sitting Shiv Sena MLC Kishanchand Tanwani ends on August 29. As per the election programme announced by the EC the last date for filling the nomination is August 1, while the scrutiny of the nomination papers is on August 2, and the last date for the withdrawal of the nomination papers is August 5. The polling will be held on August 19 and the counting of votes will be held on August 21. The voters of this constituency comprise corporators from municipal corporations and councils from Aurangabad and Jalna districts. As per the latest partywise strength in the civic bodies in these two districts, it is a straight contest between the Congress and Shiv Sena.

fragrances: Similar to cosmetics, the aroma of fragrances also change with time, especially if the fragrance is fruit or flower based. Apply the same time period to perfumes and deodorants while purchasing them from a sale. If the label shows you the manufacturing date which goes back over a year, do not buy it because the quality of the fragrance is likely to have changed. food: While masalas can be stored for a year at home because you keep them in a dry area and an air tight container, the same cannot be said for the packets that they are stored in. Sometimes, because of wear and tear, moisture can seep into the plastic plackets and spoil the masala. So, be very careful while buying them on discount.

ombay Landscape, an exhibition by Tina Chandroji, brings to you a brilliant combination of everyday life with religion and religious symbols. Her paintings showcase a variety of businesses that you come across on the streets — a paan shop, a sweet shop, a bakery and a vegetable vendor.

Using a variety of religious signs and symbols, she goes on to show how bakeries are usually run by Christians and Parsis; grocery shops by West Indians, vegetable, fruit and flower shops by North Indians and perfume and butcher shops by Muslims. Her paintings are quite simple and so is the

massages, hair cuts and facials, to mani-pedis and hair treatments, before finishing off with makeup. Their new hair colouring technique stood out; here they use cotton pads in a technique known as Balayage, which makes the colour set in a mere 35 minutes and it’s supposed to be better for your hair. Treatments are customised and so my hair was examined before the Illipe Butter Mask treatment was recommended (`1,500 for 45 minutes and `2,500 for 90 minutes). My hairdresser, James, deserves special mention for his skill — I’ve been for several hair treatments and never come away with my head feeling so light. The pressure of the massage was just right and even the quick, straight blow dry made my hair look sleek and glamorous. The beauty of the treatment was that even though it is the monsoon and I had to endure an hour in a rickshaw, my hair didn’t get flyaway, frizzy or limp. It stayed soft, light and shiny right up to my next wash. Service also deserves a special mention, because of the level of professionalism. Staff is prompt, friendly but not chatterboxes and so efficient that there won’t be a towel out of place or a bottle on the wrong counter. Prices, like most other things at Dessange Paris, are not to be taken lightly. A simple hair cut will start at `850 and a manicure and pedicure start at `500 and `600 respectively. PERSONALISED SHOPPING That’s what newly launched fashion website Voonik.com promises you. Dev Goswami logs on to find out how it fares

>> Voonik.com catches your fancy by promising you clothes meant just for you

One of the most important features of a website is its ability to catch your attention and make you want to check it out in detail. Voonik certainly succeeds there. Their homepage has a hard-to-miss banner that tells you about the website’s ability to handpick clothes and accessories for you based on your style. Needless to say, that was the very first thing that I checked out. After signing up (which won’t take more than a few seconds), I was asked to fill in my body type, gender and height. On the next page you have to choose the occasions that are most relevant/recurring in your life. Options include casual social, casual business, formal business, sports, traditional Indian, fine dining and such. I was then

shown a recommendation page, filled with products and merchandise that the website (or as they like to call it, ‘your stylist’) feels will be most suited for you. While I liked the concept, I felt that the execution could have been more detailed. They do nothing which cannot be achieved by applying a few filters on a normal website. When they say ‘style profile’ I was expecting more on the lines of cuts and silhouettes. The one saving grace is that they ask you for your skin tone and suggest clothes which would suit it. Coming to the collection available, they where www.voonik.com

have clothes from a number of popular fashion brands so the quality and styles are, expectedly, quite good. The range of options is vast and all kinds of clothing can be found on Voonik. The overall layout is simple and each item has a small ‘Ask the Stylist’ tab where you can ask them about anything that you’d like to know — another thing that impressed us. Prices are similar to what you’ll find on most websites — `500 - `1,500 with the average price around `900 - `1,000. Overall, I like their concept, but it needs a bit more work. Their ‘Style Quiz’ needs to be more detailed rather than the 30-second one they have right now. However, do check out the website — their collection justifies that.

good

From first-rate ingredients to well-balanced crusts and good prices, Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why you should order your next pizza from newly opened Kkrust in Andheri Every time I hear that another pizza joint has opened up in the city, I roll my eyes and shake my head. Not because I don’t love pizza, I’m always up for a slice of greasy, cheese laden indulgence. But, most pizza joints and takeaways leave much to be desired. The crust is either as thin as a biscuit, as thick as a piece of dough or the toppings are over or underdone. Whatever the offense, most of the pizzas were beginning to disappoint, so I was close to being jaded. But, Kkrust promised traditional wood fired oven pizza, right at your doorstep. There was no way I was going to skip trying that out. Kkrust’s menu looked impressive, the prices even more so. On a rainy evening I was more than in the mood for a pizza, so I was looking forward to the 8.30pm delivery. Kkrust made a good impression by showing up 15 minutes early and adding the tiny bottles of olive oil with the usual oregano and chili flakes. Not that the pizzas need a helping hand. For once, the toppings were just right. The surprisingly well-priced Norwegian Smoked Salmon pizza (`600

FRO-YO P

inkberry, an American frozen yogurt chain, is quite late to the party. With so many fro-yo chains that mushroomed and overwhelmed us last year, this “healthy” snack was at its peak of popularity in 2012. However, the build-up around it has fizzled out now and I wasn’t too sure as to why Pinkberry joined the bandwagon when the fireworks have clearly subsided. However, when I stepped amidst the spacious establishment at Pali Naka with its pleasing light green and woody décor, I realised they were probably waiting for the right venue. The interior of Pinkberry is definitely more appealing compared to other fro-yo outlets strewn around Bandra. The yogurt, as mentioned by them, is made of low fat milk and is mixed with toppings that are fresh and hand-cut on the same day. We tried the frozen yogurt first and ordered for a small mango with red velvet cake and sliced almonds. They

have an option of 20 dry and liquid toppings, but the servers are a little stingy when it comes to doling them out. And since we’re paying `100 for a small cup of frozen yogurt, we expect a little more generosity. The mango frozen yogurt was rich and delicious and we might go back for more. Other options in this category include original, chocolate, salty caramel, pomegranate and green apple. Pinkberry has Indianised the menu to a great extent when it comes to their fresh yogurt options, with surprising toppings such as dhokla and khatta meetha. basil, mango kiwi, chikoo dates granola and spicy cucumber. Khatta meetha piqued our interest and we ordered a medium of the same. While the appearance of khatta meetha fresh yogurt made us exchange a few sceptical glances, the combination of this sweet and salty chewda with fresh and creamy yogurt was surprisingly yummy. But by your fourth bite, you’ll realise that it tastes exactly like dahi chaat that you get down the lane — something that I can also probably whip up at home. Post that realisation, paying `160 for it acted as a dampener and I might not order this one the next time I visit Pinkberry. They also offer fresh yogurt lassi and frozen shakes, the former being another attempt to please the Indian palette. Will I go there again? Yes, there are plenty of untried and interesting options on the menu. I might also prefer to go here than any other yogurt place because of the roominess of the outlet.

>> The Norwegian Salmon pizza is a must-try at Kkrust for 11 inches) had at least three sizeable chunks of salmon on each slice, while the utterly delicious, Garlic Butter Shrimp (`295 for 8 inches) was evenly topped with the onions, sundried tomatoes and delicious, moist shrimp pieces, dripping with butter. The Norwegian Smoked Salmon pizza comes with delicious lemon zest garnish and capers that complement the salmon perfectly. After enjoying the pizzas warm, I decided it was time for the ultimate challenge — the day after pizza test. I popped a slice each in the fridge overnight and braced myself for a leathery, tasteless slice the next day. Surprisingly, I enjoyed my pizza breakfast as the salmon was not rubbery, the shrimp was (very unexpectedly) still moist and the capers and lemon hadn’t become exaggerated versions of themselves. >> Khmer cuisine is similar to but more fragrant than Thai cuisine

shadows

There is much more to the magical Siem Reap than being the base town of Cambodia’s pride — the Angkor Wat temple, learns Raul Dias who returns to tell the tale after partaking in its myriad bounties

I

have to admit that I was sufficiently warned. “You can’t ignore Angkor Wat anywhere in Cambodia, let alone Siem Reap!” was my Filipino friend and Cambodia-resident David Rosali’s missive to me when I told him that I was planning a trip to Cambodia without wanting to do too much of ‘Angkor Wat-ish’ stuff while in Siem Reap. But, at the risk of sounding like a total Philistine with scant regard for cultural and historical monuments, the aforesaid temple complex just didn’t do it for me. I simply couldn’t bear the idea of jostling for space with hoards of trigger happy tourists waiting to get that picture postcard perfect shot of the temple with the rising sun silhouetting it. Or trudging my way though pesky vendors trying to peddle their wares of bottled water and crisp packets to harrowed foreigners like me. But, not wanting to risk being lynched by friends and family for not paying obeisance to the grand 12th century temple complex that lay hidden for decades under overgrown trees and other assorted forest decay, I decided to dedicate one day to it out of my measly one and a half days in Siem Reap. And so, a good hour before day break on day one, I dragged myself out of the confines of my hotel room, boarded a waiting tuk-tuk and sped off into the dark with just one mission: to add to my ‘been there, done that’ list. As the only monument in the world to find a place on its country’s national flag, the Angkor Wat complex is heavily influenced by both the Kalinga architecture of Odisha and the Chola style of Tamil Nadu and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The main Angkor temple is a representation of Mount Meru, the home of the Gods, while the central colonnade of five towers is said to symbolise the five peaks of the mythical mountain with the moat surrounding the ‘mountain ranges’ — the ocean. The smaller temples in the complex include the stunning Bayon Temple that is famous for its stone face structures.

>> Bayon Temple, with its carved stone structures (below) is must-visit monument in the Angkor Wat complex

Interestingly, the Indian influence in its modern avatar can be seen at the Ta Prohm temple as the Indian Ministry of External Affairs in co-operation with the Cambodian government is helping restore and conserve this temple that has also had a starring role alongside Angelina Jolie in the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Signboards everywhere in the Ta Prohm temple carry tri-lingual EnglishKhmer-Hindi literature and information that made me chuckle with delight along with the other Indian tourists, as we all felt united in a weird sort of brotherhood miles away from India! But at the end of that day, after a serious case of ‘monumental fatigue’ at the Angkor Wat complex, the more rustic and down-toearth charms of Siem Reap beckoned, and so,

I paid a visit to the night market on Sivutha Road. The market, although built in 2007, is kitted out in typical Kmer style huts that sell traditional Cambodian made handicrafts, clothes, jewellery and paintings at very affordable prices. With all my souvenir shopping sorted out, I settled in for a relaxing foot massage for US $7 (`415 approximately) at the in-house spa that undid all the stress and strain the ‘Indiana Jones-ing’ at Angkor had caused. It is interesting to note, that although you can pay in Cambodian riel, the preferred currency is the American dollar. And once again, 15 of those distinct green dollar bills proved their worth, as they bought me a hearty dinner of amok fish curry, sticky rice, sweet Khmer sausages known as twah ko and a luridly purple grape and vodka cocktail at the funky Sala Bai restaurant that I was soon to learn had a heartwarmingly altruistic side to it. Like a lot of restaurants in Siem Reap, Sala Bai, doubles up as a cookery training school that not only introduces disadvantaged young Khmers to the art of hospitality, but also distributes part of its profits to orphanages and old age homes. The next (and last!) day of my Siem Reap sojourn was reserved for something that I had planned to do the minute I had heard of it — a Khmer cookery class! For a mere US$ 12 per person, Le Tigre de Papier restaurant organised a class for me and two of my newfound Aussie friends that included a visit to the local produce market. The class itself took place on the shaded terrace of the restaurant, where Mai our eight-month pregnant instructor deftly guided us as we chopped, stirred and then slurped our way through Khmer food which is quite similar, but more fragrant and dare-I-say fishier than Thai food. Later that evening, with the flavour of Siem Reap firmly ensconced in my very being, I set off towards the airport in a tuk-tuk that believe it or not was named ‘Pride of Angkor’. See, you never can really escape it, after all.

Part entertainment, part brutal retribution for a past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’s young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. HBO, 9 p.m.

Key Highlights: Revenue in reported currency were flat QoQ at Rs 5.4 bn from Rs 5.3 bn in Q4FY13 owing to seasonal impact from GIS segment. z Revenues in the Transport vertical were up marginally by 1% QQ (36% of rev) largely on project ramp downs in several travel companies in the European market owing to economic slow-down in the region (biggest impact from Iberia airline). Manufacturing segment revenues grew by 21% - contributing 7% of revenues. BFS revenues were up 4% QQ (12% of revenues) and Government vertical revenues up 23% QQ (13% of revenues) driven by strong traction among the top accounts and sustained new business rampups. EBIT degrew by 12% (QQ) at Rs 634mn on account of wage hike impact during the quarter to the tune of 3/7% for onsite/offshore employees. PAT declined by 6% QQ at Rs 532 mn – below our est. of Rs 565mn as impact of lower operating margin was partially negated by strong other income of Rs 206mn versus a loss of 14mn in Q4FY13. The high other income and dividend tax also resulted in higher ETR of 35% during the quarter, which would normalize during the year to 27% for FY14. Valuation: Our optimistic belief on sustained revenue growth gets further reinforced on strong new order intake during the quarter at USD 145mn despite the various economic challenges. We remain positive on the stock in view of its sustained traction in fresh order intake and client additions supported by its niche capabilities in TTL and Insurance verticals. We maintain our positive view on the stock and have built in Revenue/PAT CAGR of 18%/17% over FY13-15E. We maintain our BUY rating on the stock with a Target Price of Rs 360, valued at 7.5x of its FY15E earnings.

We recommend ‘BUY’ in this particular scrip with a target price of Rs. 260.00 for Medium to Long term investment.

Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on HDFC CMP: Rs. 823 Target Rs. 1000

In our recent interaction, HDFC was confident of achieving a strong 20%+ loan book growth led by 25%+ retail segment growth. Margins should remain stable despite a likely increase in funding costs as tight liquidity could improve pricing power, particularly in the developer portfolio. Lower risk weights to CRE-RH, if implemented by NHB, should also benefit HDFC. We remain positive on HDFC given its strong earnings growth, healthy asset quality and robust ROEs. Maintain BUY with a TP of Rs 1,000. Strong earnings visibility should help sustain valuations: The stock is trading at 14x FY14 EPS and 3.8x FY14 core BV – reasonable given HDFC’s leadership position in the mortgage space, strong visibility to earnings and high core ROEs of ~30%. Moody’s Warns Rupee Fall May Constrain Sovereign Rating By A Business Reporter

T

he rupee fall may constrain country’s sovereign credit rating, as it will “exacerbate inflationary and fiscal pressures”, even though forex currency denominated debt is only around 6% of total government debt, Moody’s warned yesterday. It also painted a grim possibility of any major gains in the rupee during the current fiscal saying that the continuing global volatility and domestic political uncertainty ahead of the 2014 hustings will limit chances of any significant appreciation apart from further impact growth. “Foreign currency-denominated debt is only about 6% of the total government debt, so depreciation will not materially increase the sov-

ereign’s debt repayment burden. “However, depreciation will exacerbate inflationary and fiscal pressures, both factors that constrain the country’s present Baa3 rating,” Moody’s said in a note yesterday. It warned: “The rupee depreciation and its likely impact on inflation and financial stability may thus keep domestic borrowing costs high, and extend the current slowdown.” However, the steep fall will raise the cost of servicing foreign currency government debt though it cannot have any major material impact on debt repayment burden, it added. Noting that the rupee fell 9.3% between May 15 and July 15, Moody’s said the currency fall could increase the debt repayment and input costs

for some firms, adding to the current economic stress. Even though non-government external debt is a relatively modest 16% of GDP and it is not the primary source of financing for the majority of the private sector, the credit impact of depreciation will be greater on specific firms than on the larger economy, it added. On the future of the rupee, it said: “Though the recent measures, including those to adjust rupee liquidity and increase foreign capital inflows may arrest the pace of depreciation, the subdued growth environment, continuing global volatility, and domestic political uncertainty ahead of the 2014 national elections will limit the chances of significant appreciation this year.”

Tanuj Virwani makes his film debut in Love U Soniyo Rati Agnihotri’s son Tanuj is set to make his debut in Love U Soniyo. He spoke to Sandeep Hattangadi How has your debut film shaped up? It has come out very well and is the best launch pad for me. The director Joe Rajan has done a good job and drawn out good performances from me and my co-star Neha Hinge. He is very chilled out.

What’s your character like? I play a Catholic boy called Mark who is bit of a brat, bunking college, picking up fights and is quite a bad boy who falls in love with a simple studious Punjabi girl played by Neha

Hinge. The film is based on our love story. She is my ‘soniyo’.

Why was there a delay in the release? The film was ready but we wanted to promote it in a big way and release it at the right time, but no re-shooting was done.

About Neha as a co-star? Despite winning a pageant, she has no airs and takes trouble to give the right shots. Our pair was perfect for the script. I am sure she will be a big star.

How did you prepare? I did an in depth course from Kishore Namit Kapoor’s Acting School. What about the film’s music? The film has some good music by Vipin Patwa and a racy track song composed by Remo Fernandes with a music video. It is already catching up with listeners.

Do you have a role model? I am a huge fan of Ranbir Kapoor and would like to do wonderful films like him.

Manoj Kumar turns 75 Ranveer Shorey’s comic act in Bajatey Raho By Suneel V. Gaur & Rajesh V. Gaur

Ranveer Shorey’s latest satirical comedy Bajatey Raho is about to release. Sandeep Hattangadi had a brief chat with him

N

ICKNAMED Mr. Bhaarat for his patriotic films, veteran actor Manoj Kumar turns 75 on July 24. The late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri had asked him to create a film based on the popular slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”, the result of which was Kumar’s directorial debut, Upkar (1967) which went on to become a big success. In the film he the late actor Pran played the positive role of Malang Chacha and won acclaim and awards for it. This role helped Pran become the best character actor in the film industry. His next directorial venture Purab aur Paschim juxtaposed life in the East and West. His next Shor was also critically acclaimed but was not as big a success as his other films. Kumar made a strong comeback in 1974 with the successful Roti Kapda aur Makaan which helped him win his second Filmfare award for direction, the first one being for Upkar. He

reached the peak of his career with Kranti, where he got the chance to direct his idol Dilip Kumar, in a story about freedom struggle. Commenting on his long absence from direction Kumar said, “I am not greedy film as a director or an actor. While some of my contemporaries acted in nearly 300 films, I’ve done hardly 45 films in my entire career.” As far as signing any other film is concerned he said, “I have always been very focused about the kind of work I want to do and have always believed in quality and meaningful cinema and not quantity. If I get something like that, I will do it.”

How was your experience of shooting in Delhi after Khosla Ka Ghosla? It was pretty much the same because we were shooting in similar locations since the film is set in a place like in Khosla Ka Ghosla. The character is also similar in the sense that this film also explores relationships like family and friends.

Most of your films are with Vinay Pathak? Vinay and I have a 15 year work association and a strong friendship, so whenever I work with him, I’m immediately at ease and comfortable. We also share a common sensibility in the kind of work we do and that is the reason why we land up doing the same films most of the time.

Tell us about your character in the film? My character in the film is called Balwant and is the protagonist’s childhood buddy, who’s helping him when his family is going through hard times. He’s a Punjabi parking lot owner in Delhi with a short temper but a heart of gold, and a penchant for quick repartee.

About your upcoming projects? Right now my focus is completely on Bajatey Raho. Honestly, there aren’t enough good scripts that come to me, nor great parts. I have to choose the best of what is offered to me to survive. I am going on shoot for my next film but it is too early to comment on it.

Describe Bajatey Raho. It is a funny, rather mad journey of 4 people who are close to each other and have come together for a purpose and family. It is about doing the right thing in a wrong way. What is your take on revenge comedy? Bajate Raho is more of a

comic thriller than a revenge comedy. It is definitely a first of its kind script and that is what makes this movie all the more exciting.

How did you bond with the rest of the cast? We all bonded very well as a unit. Shashant, Vinay and I go way back and therefore we get along really well. As for the rest of them we got along just fine.

For a change you are said to be louder in this film than Vinay Pathak. Is that true? My character himself is a loud Delhi businessman and hence I dealt with it that way. Vinay’s character is more calm and subdued and therefore he was required to underplay his character.

Why should people go to watch this film? I think it is a very light hearted film and a very different and unusual script. It is something that has not been attempted before and the audience will enjoy this mad ride called Bajatey Raho. We share the same sentiments about the film,Ranveer!

ET another film comes up this week, that has Dawood Ibrahim for inspiration—D-Day. The underworld has always fascinated Bollywood, and filmmakers like Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap have built their careers on gangster movies. In most films, the mafia don is seen as a figure that inspires awe and fear, a man to be envied or imitated, because he has wealth and power; politicians, bureaucrats and members of the film industry hover around, hoping to please him and curry favour. The mysterious Dawood Ibrahim, on whose lapel all problems with terrorism or breakdown of law and order are pinned, lives a luxurious Shruti Hassan in a still in D-Day. life and runs his criminal empire from hideout that every- spine. Many actors have played one seems to know about. Knowing “Bhai” personally was an achievement, till the cops started cracking down on gangs, and suddenly nobody wanted to even utter the D word. D-Day is about a covert mission to nab the elusive don, a kind of fictional Zero Dark Thirty (Katherine Bigelow’s film about the reallife hunt for Osama Bin Laden). stand by it. How can we go back? Salman is not the person who will go back on his words,” he told PTI. Actor Suniel Shetty’s daughter Athiya will be launched opposite Suraj in the remake of the 1983 blockbuster directed by Ghai which starred actors Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri in the lead. “We are making a film with him (Suraj). I don’t know when it will go on floors. I have to discuss it with Salman. But definitely we are making the film with Suraj,” Ghai said, adding he was planning to meet Salman next week and chalk out the details.

ILMMAKER Subhash Ghai said that he and actor Salman Khan stood by their commitment to launch Suraj Pancholi in the remake version of 1983 film Hero. Ghai further said that model-actress Jiah Khan suicide case will have no bearing on the newcomer’s debut. Speculations were rife that Suraj, son of actor Aditya Pancholi, would not be the part of the remake version after police booked him for allegedly abetting Jiah’s suicide but Ghai denied the reports. “Suraj is not at fault and why should he be punished for it? He is a wonderful and potential actor. We had committed to him and we will

Audience liking Bhaag... is biggest compliment: Farhan

Sawant’s D. Emraan Hashmi has played characters based in him in Milan Luthria’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Sonu Sood in Shootout in Wadala. Promos of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobara show a sneering, stylish Akshay Kumar declaring that he’d rather be a villain than a hero. “Agar mein hero ban gaya to meri pehchaan bura maan jaayegi,” he declares. However, from the way Bollywood filmmakers portray him, it is clear they are overwhelmed by his power and the way his influence runs deep into the criminal and terrorist circuits of the country. They have turned him into a flamboyant, shrewd, intrepid and almost heroic figure. Maybe it is because we are short of real heroes.

CTOR Farhan Akhtar is happy with the positive response that his recently released film Bhaag Milkha

Bhaag is garnering from all quarters. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is a biopic on ‘The Flying Sikh’—Milkha Singh. The protagonist’s role was essayed by Farhan on the big screen. “We are happy that people love this film. The biggest compliment is the acceptance of audience and Milkha Singh and his family,”

Farhan told reporters here last night at the success party of the film. He is also ecstatic being praised by his family for his performance. “My mother (Honey Irani) and wife (Adhuna) are feeling proud of me. It is nice to see this reaction as I was away from them and gave most of the time to this film,” he said. Mehra and Farhan also met Maharashtra revenue minister Balasaheb Thorat and sought tax concession for the film. “We got a positive response from the minister. They also felt there is a positive message in the film. We hope they will make our film tax free,” Farhan said. Even the director is happy with the response of sports personalities towards the film.

VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): You decide to go in for purchase of property as investment for future. But do it quietly as there will be some elements, which may try to stall your plans. Your work may involve overtime as you are running behind schedule. The extra money earned will come in handy for fun times with family. Those in love or keen to get married will get a good proposal.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Some News your get to hear can be upsetting. The situation being volatile, keep your feelings under wraps and avoid discussions. Let not personal problems affect your performance at work. You are at a very crucial point in a negotiation which needs your undivided attention. It is the circumstances that are creating the confusion in your personal life. Avoid outbursts and saying things you may regret later.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Apart from slight improvement you have not achieved much in terms of work. But you are moving in the right direction so push ahead. A meeting scheduled for today is bound to have good results that lead to more gains for you. You will renew old ties and catch up old friends but the magic seems to be missing. Do not try too hard; perhaps distance has dulled responses and romance.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): It will be difficult for you to take a decision today on a matter, which you are not familiar with. It would be wiser to consult someone who knows or has adequate background and whose advice can be useful. Be careful with your finances and check an urge to splurge money. The object of your affections seems to be in a bad mood. Perhaps you are trying too hard to change the person. Accept them for what they are.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Your career will get boost with the offer of prestigious assignment. You will have to be tactful when discussing money with close associates. News of the progress and construction of a new home is likely. There may be some extra expenses that you will be able to manage to arrange quite easily. You may not find yourself totally in rapport with a new romantic companion. Give yourself time before making any commitments.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Avoid making heavy financial commitments at this juncture. It is not a good idea to take on too many projects at this juncture however easy it may sound. Taking up of several projects together can cause worry. Try to delegate some responsibilities to others. There are a lot of social activities lined up for the evening but you may have run out of steam after a tiring day at work. Love life takes an interesting turn with your beloved wanting to protect you from the world.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Monetary gains accrue to you from your normal channel of work. A determined attitude and persistent effort will certainly help you in your career and get you what you want. There is indication of much travel. Success and honors accrue to family members giving you a lot of happiness. Involvement in family and entertainment for loved ones leaves little time for romance. You have every reason to feel happy about yourself.

Arthur's allegations pretty poor, disappointing: McGrath

LONDON: Pace legend Glenn McGrath feels sacked Australian cricket coach Mickey Ar thur's allegations of facing racial discrimination and having to deal with a divided team are "pretty poor" and show that he is "not too concerned" about the side he mentored. Arthur has sued Cricket Australia claiming that his sacking smacked of racial bias and that he dealt with a team in which captain Michael Clarke and senior player Shane Watson were constantly at loggerheads. "Arthur's comments are disappointing, no doubt about it. The issues he is targeting -racism and what he said about Watto -- those things are pretty poor. And the timing is not flash," McGrath wrote in 'The Guardian'. "I saw Shane Warne had said that Arthur's comments showed he was not too concerned about Australian cricket. I don't disagree with that. Each to their own. If that's what he wants to do, that's up to him. I feel very disappointed with it. And for it to come out now you do wonder if it was leaked intentionally," he alleged. McGrath, however, was of the view that the Aussies could turn the situation to their advantage by bouncing back in the ongoing Ashes series which they have started on a losing note.

BELL FOILS AUSSIES AGAIN SPORTS

ONDON: Ian Bell held the English innings once again after an early jitter to score his 18th test hundred at the home of cricket to recover England’s position on day one of the second Ashes Test at Lord's. Bell, whose second innings 109 set up Ashes-holders England's tense 14-run first Test win over Australia in Nottingham last week, was out of a similar score to leggie Steven Smith at slip not before he staged a 144-run stand with Yorkshire born Jonny Bairstow for the fifth wicket. England ended the day at 289 for seven with nightwatchman Tim Bresnan and James Andersen at crease. Earlier, he added 99 for the fourth wicket with Warwickshire colleague Jonathan Trott (58). Jonny Bairstow, who was 'bowled' by Peter Siddle on 21 only to be reprieved by the third umpire checking for a no-ball, was 28 not out having helped Bell compile a fifth-wicket stand so far worth 56 runs. Bell and Trott came together with England in dire straits at 28 for three after England captain Alastair Cook had won the toss and opted to bat on a gloriously sunny day at the 'home of cricket'. Trott, often criticised for slow scoring, struck 11 fours in almost giddy fashion before he became recalled Australia quick

Ryan Harris's third wicket of the innings. After the teams were presented before play to Queen Elizabeth II, monarch of both Britain and Australia, it was the tourists who bossed the early exchanges. England were soon three wickets down with Cook, opening partner Joe Root and dangerman Kevin Pietersen all out cheaply. Shane Watson got the ball rolling for Australia when he brought one back into Cook's pads to have the lefthander lbw for 12. Harris, recalled after Australia dropped the wayward Mitchell Starc, then took two wickets in an over. The 33-year-old, playing just the 13th Test of his injury-ravaged career and first in more than a year, then struck with the second ball of his third over when he had Root lbw for six. Root referred the decision and after all the controversy surrounding the use of the Decision Review System (DRS) in the first Test, it was no surprise that New Zealand's Tony Hill, now in the third umpire's chair, took several minutes before upholding Sri Lankan on-field official Kumar Dharmasena's decision that the ball had hit pad first. Brief Scores: England 289 for seven in 90 overs [Ian Bell 109, Jonny Bairstow 67, Steven Smith 3/18] vs Australia.

Queen Elizabeth II meets Australian captain Michael Clarke at Lord's Cricket Ground, London, ahead of the first day of the second test between England and Australia. India have got their reasons to oppose DRS: ICC CEO Richardson L

ONDON: The BCCI does "have its own reasons" for opposing the controversial Decision Review System (DRS), according to International Cricket Council's Chief Executive Dave Richardson who admitted that the DRS technology was not foolproof yet. The DRS has come under scanner in the wake of the controversial first Ashes Test between England and Australia which witnessed a number of umpiring howlers. "India have got good reasons (for opposing) and some issues are debatable. Obviously we can improve and discuss on things like three reviews," Richardson told former England captain David Gower during a television interaction at the Australia plead to Aleem Dar to give Stuart Broad out after a thick edge to first slip. lunch break on the opening day of Australia couldn’t refer to the DRS as they has exhausted their appeals.

the second Ashes Test. "The fact is that there are 10 members and each has got a vote. Anyone can say that "listen we don't want to agree". If at least seven countries are ready to agree to use DRS, it will be done," he said. The Test at Trent Bridge which witnessed some umpiring howlers was a "difficult one", said Richardson, a former South Africa wicketkeeper. As to why ICC issued a press release on the umpiring statistics after the match, Richardson replied, "I think we needed to put things straight. It was a difficult Test match and the pitch wasn't easy one. Every five overs, something was happening and we

needed to come clean and admit the errors. There were seven umpiring errors and four were corrected." "In an utopian world, we love everything to be perfect but that's not the case. Despite all the guidelines and protocols, we still have aircrashes," he said. On Gower's query on whether the best English or Australian umpires be allowed to officiate, Richardson answered, "We have given it a thought of having non-neutral umpires but then if he makes a mistake, the perception of being bias comes into picture." The other issue that is on the priority list for ICC is zero tolerance towards corruption. "It's big issue as far as some of the domestic T20 leagues are concerned."

EW DELHI: The sixth edition of IPL, which was rocked by the spot-fixing scandal, has now been hit by a doping fiasco with Delhi and Kolkata Knight Rider's promising left-arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan failing a random dope test during the cash-rich league. Sangwan is only the second cricketer in the history of IPL after Pakistani speedster Mohammed Asif to have been found guilty of consuming banned drugs. "Yes, Pradeep Sangwan has tested positive for banned substances during this edition of Indian Premier League. The BCCI has already issued a letter to the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) in this regard. There have been traces of banned substances in his 'A' sample," a top BCCI official told PTI preferring anonymity. Asked if it was just a banned drug or a performance enhancing drug, the source said, "We will be able to know that only after the 'B' sample test is done. As you have seen the trend in other sports, the 'B' sample tests normally shows the trend of 'A' sam- we can't comment about what ple. Sangwan, who hails from Najafgarh, played two matches in the last edition of IPL against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He could not get a single wicket during the two IPL games. Although the BCCI does not come under the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) or its national subsidiary NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency), they have their own anti-doping agency. Just like in any ICC event, in IPL also, there is random doping tests of players before or after matches. The burly pacer, who had sustained a shoulder injury during the IPL, was undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy and has currently gone to the United Kingdom for a surgery. He was not available for comment. The major doping fiascos in the cricketing world has seen legendary Shane Warne failing a dope test and being sent back home before the start of the 2003 ICC World Cup while Pakistani pacemen Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif failed dope tests in 2006 before the Champions Trophy in India.

Salman’s hit-and-run application dismissed with ‘costs’ By A Staff Reporter

A

lmost a month after the Mumbai sessions court upheld a Bandra magistrate’s order that actor Salman Khan who was involved in a hitand-run accident in 2002, should be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 (II) of the IPC, it has now come to light that the Khan’s application was dismissed by the court ‘with costs’. The matter was revealed by advocate Abha Singh, who said, “The Additional Sessions Judge U.B. Hejib had dismissed the Criminal Revision Application filed by Salman Khan challenging the Order of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, 9th Court Bandra. As per the Order of the Bandra Court, Salman Khan, who had been facing a trial in the hit-andrun case, under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, having a maximum sentence of 2 years, would have to face trial in the Sessions Court under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code,

1860, carrying with it a sentence of 10 years. It has now come to light that Khan’s application was dismissed by the Court ‘with costs’ when I received the Final Copy of the Order for my client, Santosh Daundkar. Since the fact that the application was dismissed with costs, the costs will now have to be paid to the government. Further, as per the rules, the government will have to calculate the cost and then seek a claim from Khan. In view of the orders of the court, Khan has no option but to pay the costs to the Government for dragging it into litigation.”
