MANHOLE MANTRAPS

t’s bad enough that Mumbai’s roads are plagued by potholes. It’s even worse when dozens of manholes suddenly begin showing signs that no one cares about; whether they are covered, or sunk, or pose a serious traffic hazards, or that they are just crumbling into themselves and the underground systems to which they are supposed to lead. The ADC brings you a glimpse of just a few on some of our prime roads.

Mini Nagar at Dahisar has a maxi-problem of wide open manholes.

This manhole in Borivli near the police station and the civic ward office presents a truly ugly picture.

Fancy Lower Parel where a biker could easily lose his life in this manhole under the flyover.

This one’s at Mahim on the main road.

Outside Mahim Station and there is no fudging the fact that a missing manhole cover could be fatal. So hedge it and get on with life.

such operations is evidently a hard one to make and this has pushed salvage operations off by a few more days. The salvage firms themselves are reported to be very keen on undertaking the whole exercise, given that the Sindhurakshak is lying with the conning tower actually above the surface. Whichever way one looks at it, raising and salvaging the wreck is going to be a lucrative proposition that will also result in considerable publicity for the firm that makes the winning bid. The ADC has learned that a primary assessment has been made and proposals to undertake the work have come forward. Ministry of Defence officials said regular paper work and funding will not be a constraint in the salvage operation. The INS Sindhurakshak is a Russian-made

THE BOND OF LOVE… Grand Masti girl Kainaat Arora’s special Raksha Bandhan with cancer patients at Cancer Patients Aid Association at King George Memorial in Mahalaxmi on Tuesday.

It was earlier decided that from Aug 15 onwards, the MAU would go on an indefinite strike in the city to support the cause of auto unions in Pune against the irregular supply of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as well as to demand the renewal of expired permits.

Auto rickshaw drivers had previously threatened to go on strike on August 8 to push for their demands which include setting up a separate welfare board for rickshaw owners and increasing the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) pumps in the city.

from inside have proved unsuccessful because water just keeps rushing back inside. So while a few inner compartments have been emptied and closed, there is not much difference in the overall scenario. Another fear is that, while lifting the entire structure by the help of cranes, the badly heat damaged vessel might actually break off. Nor is it feasible to deply many cranes on the jetty off which the submarine lies submerged. Some experts have reportedly suggested a simultaneous and partial lifting of the submarine to the surface, using both air balloons, while sliding cushions below the hull to cushion it from breakage while the lifting process is on. Meanwhile, retrieval operations are still on for the remaining bodies in the submarine. The MAU had previously threatened a strike on June 18. Rao’s demands included an annual fare hike, withdrawal of the rule that autos older than 16 years be taken off the roads and the introduction of sixseater autos. However, the strike was called off at the last minute. On June 17, members of the various unions led by Sharad Rao including auto rickshaw drivers, BEST workers and BMC mployees had threatened to go off work. Sushil Kadam | ADC

leuths of the Kashimira Police Station have arrested the 28-year-old dairy shop owner for keeping a 12-year-old child helper captive and repeatedly torturing him for almost three months. The ADC had followed up the matter and reported about it in its Monday edition (As bad as spoilt milk). The matter came to light when the victim identified as Bhola Bhairavlal (12), who worked as an errand boy at the M.M. Hotel, was sent to deliver packets of milk at a nearby building. A woman from the building spotted scars and deep injury marks on Bhola’s back, shoulder and

It seems that the child's parents, who are natives of Rajasthan, were lured into sending him with a promise of good wages. The parents agreed as they come from very poor background. “The accused has been arrested and the child has been sent to a Juvenile Home in Bhiwandi”, confirmed Police Inspector (Crime) Shivlal Purbe. Further investigations are on.

n a cold blooded murder, an 18-year-old teenager, Salman Shaikh, was hammered to death allegedly by his cousin brother at a lime packaging unit in the Gavraipada area of Nallasopara (east) late on Monday night. Salman, who worked as a salesman for a private firm in Mumbai, stayed in Pandey Nagar with his mother and two younger siblings. Aspiring to start his own business, Inquilab Shaikh (40) had recently

moved to Salman’s house from his native place in Uttar Pradesh, the police informed. Both of them used to sleep at a nearby lime packaging unit. While Salman was found dead with his head hammered early on Tuesday morning, Inquilab had mysteriously disappeared. “It is still not clear what went wrong between the two. While we are questioning family members and relatives, a man hunt has been launched to nab Inquilab who is the prime suspect”, said an investigating officer.

A

fter 11 days of interrogation, the Kalamboli police have extracted a confession out of seven men arrested on August 8 for robbing a man of two mobile phones, a branded watch and a 14 gram gold chain on August 1. Rajkumar Verma, a resident of Kalamboli was driving back home with his family at 11.30 pm when his car broke down near Sector 20. When he got off to check what was wrong, he found himself surrounded by seven men armed with choppers and iron rods. “The accused threatened him, hit him with the chopper and snatched two mobile phones, a branded watch and a 14 gram gold chain and fled,” said Mahesh Tarade, Police Inspector, Kalamboli police station. “After a few days on August 8 we could suspect that the same group is going to commit the crime in Belapur for their next target”, said Tarade.

A complaint was registered against the unidentified men. On August 8 the Kalamboli police received a tip off of a possible attack by the same gang at Belapur and reached there in time to nab them near Belapur station. “We have recovered a Nokia E71, Nokia C2 and Samsung phone, the choppers and the rods used as weapons as well as all the stolen gold,” added Tarade. The accused have been identified as Manuhar Mulla (41), Santosh Vika (28), Sanjay Yadav (32), Sanwal Mulla (300, Ashik Rehman (22), Rana Shaikh (23), and Shah Jamal Hussain (25) all of whom are residents of Kalwa and Bhindi Bazar. The seven have been booked under Sections 397, 395 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and were produced before the court on Saturday. “The accused would loiter on empty roads during the night and stop cars and other vehicles and assault and rob the occupants and then flee,” said Tarade.

MBMC development hit due to staff crunch FESTIVE SPIRIT… Members of the Koli community of Badhwar Park, dressed in traditional attire celebrate ‘Naarli Purnima’ by performing a ‘puja’ to appease the Sea God Varuna, seeking his blessings for a safe and secure fishing season, on Tuesday. T

hanks to the acute shortage of technical staff in the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), development seems to have taken a back seat in the twin city. The worst affected is the Public Works Department (PWD), followed by the Water Supply, Town Planning and the Anti-Encroachment Wing. Apart from on-going con-

struction work being taken up at 300-odd sites by civic contractors, various multi-crore projects including the BSUP Housing Scheme, the Narothan Project, underground drainage work and water supply projects are underway across the MiraBhayandar region, while a few others are in the pipeline. While two new wards have recently been carved out, taking up the total number of wards from four to six, the

extra responsibility of checking 1267 pre-1995 structures has only added to the department’s woes, as the entire onus of work rests on the shoulders of the Junior Engineers (JE). The acute staff crunch of technical staff, especially JEs, has started showing its adverse effects on the performance of the civic administration. A comparison with other municipal corporations reveals that the MBMC is the weakest civic body in terms of

he Kalamboli Police has once again received a complaint regarding a Tata trailer being stolen along with a cash of Rs.11,00,000 from Rodapali village. Earlier, a Tata trailer worth Rs.3,00,000 was stolen by two persons on August 1 at around 9 pm from the Kalamboli steel market, after which a case was registered at the Kalamboli Police Station and the accused were booked

under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code. As the investigation was on, the Kalamboli Police got the new complaint on August 6. “Going by our suspicions, we began to trap the steel market area day in and day out to find the accused and we were soon able to trace the two persons named Gurutej Singhora Singh (23) and Jeetsingh Makhansingh (20) belonging to Punjab and Dahisar respectively. They

were arrested and taken into police custody. Bothe of them accepted being guilty after the interrogation. An amount of Rs.14, 00,000 and both the Tata trailers were recovered”, said Mahesh Tarade, Police Inspector, Kalamboli Police Station. The police has found that the two accused have earlier committed such types of crimes thrice in Ahmedabad and Nanded. “A strict action will be taken against the two”, added Tarade.

technical staff strength. While the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation ,having a populace of 13.45 lakh has a staff strength of 90 JEs, their Ulhasnagar and Bhiwandi counterparts have 35 and 30 JEs on their pay rolls. However, the MBMC which administers a population of more than 10 lakh (sprawling in an area of 79.4 sq.km) still relies on its staff pattern from 2002 and has just 19 JEs. Sensing the gravity of the issue,

Mayor Catlin Pereira has also dashed a letter in this context to the civic chief seeking immediate recruitments. In proportion to the vast area and existing population, the MBMC needs 67 JEs, 20 Divisional Engineers and 7 Executive Engineers. “Taking into consideration the shortfall of technical staff, we have outsourced the services of 10 engineers and will deploy more as and where the need arises. The administrative expenses

now stand at 32 per cent and have to be kept under control,” said, Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani. Admitting that the lack of expertise in the MBMC has affected big-ticket projects, an official said, “Labourers have to work at sites without the guidance of technical staff especially JEs who are over-burdened. This not only leads to unprecedented delays but also puts a question mark on the quality of work.”

HE ongoing monsoon session of Parliament is seeing something decidedly odd. So odd, in fact, that Congress president Sonia Gandhi was moved to query “A lie gets halfway around the world Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun before the truth has a chance to get its Jaitley when they met at Rashtrapati Bhavan pants on.” for the President’s At Home on Independence — Winston Churchill Day. Why, she asked Jaitley, is the Rajya Sabha functioning and passing bills while the Lok Sabha gets adjourned every day? The little bird who overhear d the question didn’t catch the reply. But the joke going around Parliament is that pan masala is proving more effective than imported chewing gum. In other words, pan masala addict Rajiv Shukla, who manages the Rajya Sabha for the government, has stolen a march over his gum chewing boss Kamal Nath who has failed to get the Lok Sabha going for even one day despite his legendary ‘deal-making’ skills. POWER TALK

Gandhi’s views on Education E

DUCATION is backbone of society and is largely responsible for is upliftment. Mahatma Gandhi was a critic of traditional education and viewed that "By education, I mean an all-round drawing of the best in child and man in body, mind and spirit." His Wardha scheme was pointer in this direction. Accordingly, these should be the basic tenets of Gandhian education.

sufficient units.

Emphasis on morality: By education, Gandhi meant the improvement of morality within a student. Without being bookish, a student should adopt certain moral ethical codes like truth, nonviolence, charity and so on which will illumine his character. Thus a character building through education was a prime concern for Gandhi.

Free primary education: Gandhiji advocated for free and compulsory Non-participation in politics: education for all-boys and girls between 7 and Gandhiji wanted to keep the students 14 years. Education should be imparted in away from politics. If students will participrimary level in the student's mother tongue. pate in politics, they will be pawn at the A free primary universal education is to be imparted to all the children in the village. This will make the backbone of a country strong.

Place of vocational education: A love for manual work will be injected in the mind of children. This is not a compulsion but the child will learn it by doing. Being free from mere bookish knowledge, a student should resort to manual work. He, thus, put emphasis on vocational and functional education. “Earning while learning” was the motto of this education. This wills increase the creativity in a student. As Gandhi wanted to make Indian village’s self-sufficient units, he emphasised that vocational education should increase the efficiency within the students who will make the village as self-

publicly. He said the meeting with the VHP sent a wrong signal to the Muslim community. With BSP chief Mayawati smirking over the public relations disaster by the father and son duo, the UP government has moved into damage control mode quickly and cancelled permission for the VHP yatra.

hands of the politicians who will utilize them for fulfilling their desire. This will hamper the development of a student and his education will suffer a setback. So, he advised the students to keep themselves completely away from politics.

Women education: Gandhi was a protagonist of women education. He advocated that three should be no distinction in equality of status between men and women in society. He vehemently opposed Purdah system and widowhood. He wanted to free women from social serfdom.

So, the number of girl students considerably rose in various educational institutions inside the country. Thus, Gandhi emphasised the need of women education to improve the lot of society. Gandhi's idea on education is a novel one. His idea of vocational education was unique which even now-a-days is being promoted by the government in India.

Gandhi's Sarvodaya: Sarvodya is otherwise known as Gandhian Socialism. It is the around development of an individual. This idea came to the mind of Gandhi when he was translating John Raskin's book 'Unto the Last'. It includes the following features.

Upliftment of all: Gandhian Sarvodya is a principle which is universal. It is a new approach of, socialism. It was against the principle that growth of majority in the society will improve the condition of the society. On the other hand Gandhi envisaged that all the individuals have equal importance in the society and so upliftment of every man in the society is a vital necessity. Ideal social order: Sarvodaya brings to the forefront an idea social order. It includes .several socio-¬economic programmes. Eradication of poverty, removal of untouchability, promotion of widow remarriage, introduction of Khadi, welfare of the cows etc. By improving these aspects, Gandhi pointed out that the social order can be regulated and socialism can be attained.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2013

Women’s safety: Railways need to pull up their socks ONCE again we witnessed the incident of a woman (this time an American national) being attacked on a suburban local on Sunday (18th). This follows the very recent incident of molestation attempt on the lady who was travelling in the suburban train compartment, on 27th July between Mahalaxmi-Lower Parel stations. In the current case, what was more astonishing was that after the lady was attacked, she was made to wait at the Mumbai Central stn., as the GRP and RPF argued over whose responsiblity it was to provide her medical aid. Did they not have even a pinch of humanity when the lady was injured and bleeding? Is it not always better to take precautionary steps rather than invite trouble and go through mental disturbance when days are indeed bad? And especially, when you can’t even get honest and fast help from the police who are supposed to provide security. Incidentally, at least during such non-peak hours, the lady coaches should have the presence of lady GRP personnel. — Ms. Ramya Krishna Kumar, Dombivli

CUNNING PLOY: The Gujarat CM is trying all his cheap tricks with the selfish motive of becoming the next prime minister. Muslims voters have voted for BJP in Gujarat is utter nonsense as they vote under the fear that if they do not vote for Modi they will be eliminated in shortest period of time and which has been proved in 2002 Gujarat riots where many innocent Muslim people were butchered and their houses were burnt under his rule in the name of Hindu religion and caste. I strongly feel that BJP chief campaigner, Narendra Modi is desperate and wants to become prime minister of the country in

ment during non-peak hours and reserve some seats for women in men’s compartment like they have in BEST buses. Also, men and women’s compartment should only be separated by some parallel rods for administration purpose only so that men can easily come to the rescue of women in case of an emergency. Crime on wheels should attract harsh punishment like jail term and heavy fines so that people think twice before committing crime. Also, railway police force needs strengthening, looking at the rise in crimes during travel. NEED TO TIGHTEN SECURITY: Security for women commuters on suburban trains must be beefed up and this issue should be taken seriously by the railway authorities if they want to stop the rising crime against women on local trains. YET another ‘SHAME’ on Mumbai locals as a foreign national is slashed and robbed of her valuables while commuting and this is a rising trend which should act as an eye-opener and addressed urgently. Rapes, molestations, robbery and other crimes are on the rise in Mumbai locals which are a lifeline of the city and used by over 60 per cent on a daily basis by the city population.

One wonders what is stopping the railways from using latest technology like CCTV cameras in women compartments and other sensitive locations when the same costs a bare minimum? Why not women escort during non-peak hours in women’s compartments when crime is on the rise? The best solution is to do away with reserved women’s compart-

MOVING train has become a convenient target for miscreants to show their stunt against the weaker sex. Both the State and the Society are equally responsible for safeguarding the interest of women travelling through public transport system especially in local trains/ It is our endeavour and duty to provide safe and free travel for women in trains without eve-teasing and other ways of harassment. State Government has to provide police protection for women in local trains as the number of such happenings is on the increase in recent times. Again, in the special ladies trains running through peak hours proper security should be provided in all the compartments. Mobile, Handbag, Jewel stealing are part and parcel of train journey in the city and the Railway department is having the sole responsibility to have Railway Police to stop such stealing with the train from the lady passengers. After the attack on foreign national and many such cases it is time to beef up security. Cowardly act by threatening during odd hours in a train is an ordeal for women going out for work and return during odd hours or go to their duty during late hours. Security must be beefed up at all corners in the metro City and other big towns to minimise such happenings. A Scoring Subject

ith the reduction in the syllabus of Algebra, the portion is now easier and a boon for the weaker students, as this subject is now more scoring. Let’s deal first with the chapters that are more difficult to score. Quadratic equations is a chapter most of the students find difficult especially the latter exercises in the chapter. Weaker students find word problems more difficult as they have to form equations. But I am sure that any student can overcome this difficulty with regular practice. The first chapter on Arithmetic Progression, is very scoring. Besides this, Linear Equations, Probability and Statistics I are very easy. Hence, weaker students must focus on them. Statistics 2 is a chapter, which includes drawing pie-diagram, histogram, frequency polygon and the frequency curve. Again very scoring. Students, you must focus on the basic concepts of every chapter as the sums are based on them. Textbook exercises and the problem set must be done thoroughly. Do the solved examples for extra-practice. You may refer to any other books for practice sums. Maths has to be practiced every day of the week, with Algebra and Geometry being done on alternate days. Students normally do not score well in Algebra as their basic knowledge of integers (this is where sign errors come in) solving of equations and simplifications using identities is not strong enough. Hence, revise your rules and especially all algebraic identities like (a+b)2, (a-b)2, a3+b3, etc. To end, on a positive note, students must remember that a student with average intelligence can also score nearly full marks in Maths, only if he or she puts in hardwork which includes daily practice. Be like a caterpillar who veraciously devourers the leaves. Develop an appetite for Maths, to overcome the barrier, the fears and to conquer every sum or problem that comes your way.

Arithmetic Progression As I have mentioned earlier this is a scoring chapter, especially for the weaker students. Here are the basic concepts in the chapter: A sequence is a collection of numbers arranged in a definite order according to some definite rule. Writing the first ‘n’ terms of a sequence using the formula. To find any term of an Arthmetic Progression (AP) using the formula tn=a + (n-1)d

where ‘a’ is the first term (t1) ‘n’ is the no of the term ‘d’ is the common difference To identity if a given sequence is an AP To find the sum of the ‘n’ terms of an AP using the formula Sn=n/2 [2a+(n-1)d] Solving word problems on consecutive terms in an AP. 3 Consecutive terms: a-d, a, a+d 4 Consecutive terms: a-3d, a-d, a+d, a+3d (Common difference is 2d). 5 Consecutive terms: a-2d, a-d, a, a+d, a+2d

Here are some extra sums for practice, 1) Write the first 4 terms of the sequence where tn= 10n-1 2) The second term and the fifth term of an AP are 5/2 and 4. Find a, d and 3rd term 3) Find 3 numbers in AP such that a) Their sum is 12 and sum of their cubes is 408 b) Their sum is 36 and the third number exceeds the sum of the first and second by 2. 4) Find the sum of the first 69 terms of an AP whose 35th term is 30. 5) Find the sum of all numbers between 200 and 400 which are divisible by 7. 6) A man repays a loan of Rs.4500 without interest in 15 installments, each installment being less than the preceding installment by Rs 5. What are his first and last installments? 7) A farmer borrows Rs.2600 and agrees to repay it with total interest of Rs.180 in 8 installments; each installment being more than the preceding installment by Rs 10. What should be his first installment? 8) find the sum of all two digit numbers divisible by 3. 9) If the 7th term of an AP is 15 and 13th term is 27, find the nth term. Hence find the 20th term. 10) Find the first negative term of the sequence 138, 134, 139, 126….

he Government of Maharashtra has assured the Bombay High Court that it would fill up 537 vacancies of teachers in the government-aided secondary and higher secondary schools in Mumbai within three months. The statement was made by Advocate General Darius Khambata, as the division Bench headed by Chief Justice asked the state to complete the process of recruiting before Diwali so that students would benefit in the second semester. The Advocate General also assured that the state would consider filling up vacancies in the primary schools as well, reports PTI. Taking suo moto (on its own) cognisance of newspaper reports regarding shortage of teachers across government schools in the state, the High Court had a week ago sought the government's response. In an affidavit, Prakash Thube, Joint Secretary, School Education, on Monday stated that government had proposed to fill up 537 vacant posts of teachers in the governmentaided schools in the city; the proposal would be cleared soon. He said the authorities would direct the Director and Deputy Director of Education to give No Objection Certificates to aided schools to fill up the vacancies of teachers. This, he said, would be done a war-footing within two months of the state giving sanction for filling up these posts. In the affidavit, Thube sought a month's time for the state to give sanction; thus, he said, within three months the process of filling vacancies for teachers posts would be complete. The affidavit said that teachers were appointed on the basis of students' strength in respective school. But during a roll verification drive in 2011, it was found that many aided schools had bogus students on their rolls, in order to claim aid from the government fraudulently. Of the 2,03,69,638 students in government-aided schools across Maharashtra, 20,70,520 students were non-existing. The High Court has taken notice of media reports saying that 18,000 students studying in aided schools across the state had no teachers, and the freeze on recruitment last year had made the matters worse. In Mumbai, the reports said, 792 aided schools had shortage of 630 teachers in total. In some schools, parents had volunteered to teach, such was the shortage of teachers.

I wish to pursue a BE in Electrical Engineering. Can you help me with the list of government aided colleges that offer this course? What are the fees and other relevant details? Will this course fetch me a good job? — Ashok Mohite

Kindly go through your MHT-CET brochure which has all the relevant details of the aided and unaided institutes, fees, courses offered or log on to www.dte.org.in. If you fulfill the requirements as laid down by a company at the time of recruitment you may be selected.

I am currently in HSC (Commerce) stream at Mithibai College. I would like to know which institutions in Mumbai offer a BBA course. I have heard that if one pursues a BBA then an MBA becomes simpler. Is this true? As I am planning to do MBA, I would like to know the other courses that will help me to get into an MBA course. — Shreya Ramaswamy

BBA is offered by other universities and not by the University of Mumbai in India as well as abroad. Since both, BMS and BBA form the foundation of the management course, grasping the concepts at the Master’s level may be smooth. However, please note that MBA can be studied by any graduate irrespective of their stream. The MBA course requires a candidate with good communication and presentation skills, creativity, leadership qualities, team spirit, sportsmanship and an undying positive attitude. By doing courses, one does not get selected for an MBA. To get selected for a management course you need to clear the entrance exam, sail through the group discussion and personal interview, have an overall good academic record and work experience coupled with extracurricular activities. Want to study Marine Biology in the UK

What is the difference between an SOP (Statement of Purpose) and a Common Application Essay? — Aman The Common Application essay is for US undergraduate college applications. It is designed for admissions officers to learn more about the personality and life experiences of the applicant. For this essay, you should generally pick an incident or experience of significance to you and illustrate how it has changed you or helped you grow. The Statement of Purpose (SOP), on the other hand, is generally meant for

applications to UK schools or Masters programs anywhere. In the SOP, you should focus on what you want to study, why you want to study it, and why you want to enroll in that particular college to study that subject. You can give examples of faculty research at that college that interests you and that you might want to participate in. You can also give examples from your own extracurricular activities, research, and work experience that are relevant to that particular field of study and that would make you a good candidate to study that subject at that college.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. What are my job prospects? — Karim

Industrial Engineering has many job prospects which also cut across several industries. Most undergraduate industrial engineers are hired as process improvement engineers in manufacturing companies like Cummins, L&T etc. More lucrative job opportunities can be found in supply chain roles in e-commerce companies like Flipkart and Amazon and logistic companies like DHL and Fedex. There are very few jobs offered to undergraduates without experience by management consulting companies which are the most lucrative and hence the most competitive.

A SCARY CONJURING!

Starring: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor

MOVIE REVIEW Nainika Agarwal BMM Student

The Conjuring, the latest horror flick on the block, has invited mixed reviews about its propensity to scare. I say, SCARY! The director has used startling whispers and banging noises in the right proportion to put the audience on edge, which, let's be honest, is the real measure of how scary a horror movie is. The graphics are quite good, unlike many horror movies that overdo it with plastic-y props. Though the story is a horror movie classic-house haunted by old spirits, it is done somewhat differently and provides for an interesting watch. The story is good too, and the fact that it's based on a true story, adds to the scare factor. Overall, a must-watch if you are a horror movie buff!

« PEER SPEAK have had considerable training. Choreographers usually start their careers as dancers and take up choreographing while still performing, especially in smaller set ups. Choreography is used in a variety of fields like fashion shows, dances, cheerleading, cinematography, gymnastics, theatre and films. When I started I never thought of making it my career, but when I started learning the various expressions, it made me feel beautiful and encouraged me to learn further. I then started going for competitions and auditions and realised that I could dance and would keep dancing all my life. In

ous moods, tunes, rhythms, beats and everything else connected with choreography. It is challenging and competitive, keeps you fit and most importantly it makes you a beautiful person. My degree in Commerce was not of much help in dancing. However dancing is a different subject and has a particular kind of study which is rather extensive. However, I will always give education more importance. I have done my B.Com and M.Com and I am happy with my degrees. Education has given me a lot of confidence since I consider all knowledge to be extremely important for a person

T

he event commemorating libraries and librarians across the world was aimed at elucidating the various steps taken to kindle the lost connection between a library and its reader. Libraries are trying to liberate themselves from the traditional cocoon to hone their information sharing capabilities through the adoption of state of the art technology. Channeling the myriad potential of technology, libraries are today getting accustomed to the likings of digital natives such as e-books, audio-visual materials, online databases etc. With the presence of personalities like Prof. Harsha

to feel confident. Also, commerce comes in handy particularly in decisions related to accounts. I keep upgrading my knowledge about new styles. Training is very important but also so much fun. Teachers are strict but they also bring out the best in you. It can also be annoying at times when my team or I do not get a technique right. Nevertheless, as the saying goes, there is no gain without pain and I believe everything that I have given this profession and all that I am going to put into it is going to be worth it. It is also tiring at times because sometimes you forget to eat with all the practice.

I have learnt classical and ballroom dancing from Sandeep Soparrkar; worked with several good choreographers and done a lot of shows and events. The styles I like best are jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, ballroom, classical and Bollywood. To those who want to enter this field I would say stay calm and most importantly give yourself time to grow with dancing. Also, work with passion. Do not get discouraged and give it your best. I think every field including choreography has a lot of competition and struggle if you want to make a mark. Keep dancing to express

yourself and enjoy your work. When your emotions are right everything will fall in place. There is no fixed salary for a fresher. You may start with approximately Rs.5000 for a show since there is no written rule about the time-period or how long it takes to become a professional. It all depends on how much hard work you put in to get there, the support you need from your loved ones, self-motivation and a little luck that motivates you to keep trying. The disadvantages and difficulties pale when you think of the advantages of dancing. It keeps you young, active, creative, stress-

rom the early 1900s to today, what has changed in the overall business landscape? Quick answer - a lot! The way we manufacture, reach out to customers, work in teams, build organisational structures are completely different. Not only core industries such as finance, health care, food have evolved, but new industries like technology and internet intersected with all other industries to change the rules. Now, what about changes in MBA education? Some 100 years ago, we used to go to MBA campuses, learn basics of business from experts in the classrooms, work on due submissions, and build relationships with our batch-mates. << Dinesh Singh Does that sound any different Director-Student from what we do now in our Engagement, business schools? Sunstone Business schools carry an Business School even greater burden of keeping up with the industry demand for leadership in numbers and quality–readiness to perform. This requires business schools to innovate and keep up with the pace of change. There are three key areas of change in our current Business School structure: Focus on processing information, rather than providing information: Even until the 90s, several people carried their notes with them when they graduated from top schools, for reference! Information was really only available in expensive books, and hand-written journals. However, today one can find most information for free or very inexpensively. This is putting more pressure on changing the focus from ‘collecting the dots’ to ‘connecting the dots’. The future schools will focus more on ‘learning’ rather than ‘teaching’. The difference between teaching and learning is similar to the difference between tasks and achievements. Teaching is a task, and making students learn is an achievement. We might be performing our tasks but might not be achieving the right results. Using the workplace as a learning playground: The proliferation of manufacturing led to ‘campuslike’ companies in the first half of the 20th century. Everybody lived together and worked together. With the ‘knowledge industry’ being the main growth driver now and rapid globalisation, typical businesses tend to be much more distributed. Various tasks including managing teams, motivating people, and negotiations are performed in a distributed environment today. Business schools, however, are still pre-dominantly ‘campus-based’. Do they really need to be campus-based? Context is the king in education and there is

nothing better than a real business situation to learn from. Using the real world as the learning playground will add more to ‘learning’ and creating business leaders who will be ready to perform. Reducing the cost of MBA No education programme is more return on investment-driven than an MBA today. Think about this-you are a professional earning Rs.5 lakh and growing steadily in your career. You are thinking of joining a high quality MBA programme with a fee of Rs.10-25 lakh. With the opportunity cost of leaving your job, the overall cost for the programme can easily be more than Rs.25 lakh. With this in mind, what would be your primary criteria of choosing an MBA programme? Wouldn't it be the expected output salary after you finish your programme? As a corollary of this, if you are someone who wants to build business skills to take further risks in your career-may be become an entrepreneur, join an evolving industry, would you be willing to spend the amount to pursue your MBA knowing your short-term salary increase will not be significant after the MBA? With the huge increase in fees, our business schools are deterring the right prospective candidates from joining the programme. A risk-

« MENTOR’S DESK

taker candidate will rather spend the fee money experimenting and would not enroll in the programme. On the other hand, MBA schools will keep attracting students who are looking for a steady career growth through their MBA and possibly not take too many risks. The question to ask-shouldn't business education increase your appetite for risk and do something innovative? Our MBA education systems are built on the principles of scarcity where less number of students end up paying for the whole structure. In future, (perception of) quality of MBA education will not be proportional to the fee. The future of MBA lies in solving these challenges and leveraging these opportunities to focus on ‘Being-ApplyingKnowing’. This might mean a ground-up design of curriculum that helps students learn while applying. It might mean transferring the traditional burden of ‘lecturing’ to technology while faculty plays a much greater role as a coach. It might mean making a business school look more like the distributed ‘knowledge-based’ company using technology for greater collaboration.

My son studying in nursery class will be joining a regular school next year. He is a very active

The instance of going to a regular school will be a transition phase in your son’s life. All children have to go through this phase. They may experience separation anxiety, or worry about interacting with new and unfamiliar peers and teachers. They may have trouble adapting to a classroom environment where they will be expected to pay attention, follow directions, and share and cooperate with others. Handle this situation with a lot of love and care. Give firm but short instructions and do not expect anything too soon. He will slowly learn to adjust in the new environment. Body CombatTM a certification fee will have to be paid to learn the technique, after which, every three months, only certified instructors can order their materials which are mandatory. If you do not order your materials, your certification will not be valid. This is same with all programs under Les MillsTM. It takes approximately four months for you to become a fullfledged instructor. Again, this would depend on how fast you can pick up and deliver. If you are already from a fitness background, how well you cope with quarterly upgrades on choreography, styles and moves is to be seen. What are the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a Body CombatTM instructor? As a Body CombatTM instructor, you will firstly develop the co-ordination and agility of a mixed martial arts warrior and improve your overall fitness level. Besides the health benefits of this career, once certified, you will be internationally qualified to practice and teach anywhere in the world. On the down side, not a lot of people are aware about it in Mumbai. To add to this, the cost of training plus the trainer’s material which is a quarterly investment, could turn out to be expensive for some, as the fitness industry is still growing and trainers aren't always paid that well. Your message to youngsters who want to pursue a career in Body CombatTM. You don’t need to have a martial arts background to practice Body CombatTM. All you need is a good sense of music and a passion for fitness. If you love what you do, your job never will seem like a job to you.

Safety of women in India has always been a concern, but Mumbai has always been perceived as safer in comparison to cities like Delhi. The recent attack on an American woman in a local train in the city has only highlighted the need for safety measures for women, especially on trains. We ask youngsters what they think of the same. Mumbai was that place at one time. I don't think it is anymore. I think things like pepper-spray, tasers, etc should be more accessible for women as an immediate step. In the long run, I feel education is the only way out. Being specific about trains, whatever happened to guards manning the ladies compartments? Wasn't that a rule? Something like that would've definitely stopped what happened. — Manav Parekh, Associate Creative Director It is quintessential in today's world. People are the same across the globe and so are their sexual desires. Safety in trains is not the solution, I think every single woman has to be geared up to defend herself. Pepper sprays are the easiest solution, women should keep them handy. They should also learn some simple self defense techniques like kicking in the right place or hitting the ear or screaming out loud. — Albana Khatri Training Safety measures are needed period, not just for women. Also people need to stop relying on the policemen and government to help and start policing each other, how could a tourist, that stands out from the crowd be slashed in the afternoon and nobody caught the guy or clicked a mobile picture! — Craig Winkler, Visiting India

SONIA ROLLS OUT FOOD SECURITY MEASURE IN DELHI

EW DELHI: Going ahead with its ‘game changer’ measure for next Lok Sabha polls, Congress today rolled out the ambitious food security scheme in three states — Delhi, Haryana and Uttarakhand with party President Sonia Gandhi hailing the measure as ‘historic’ and ‘unparalleled’. Unveiling the scheme by

the struggle is not yet over and a lot was still to be done, reports PTI. "We made the (food security) scheme so that nobody remains hungry in the country and no one's child sleeps hungry. Giving food security in such a large scale is unparalleled in the world," she said. The symbolism was not lost as the party went in for

The measure failed to see the light of the day in Lok Sabha due to repeated disruptions by Oppostion parties for last few days over missing files relating to Coalgate and other issues. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Food Minister K.V. Thomas slammed Opposition for obstructing the passage of the Bill in Par-

liament. Thomas was in particular critical of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of delaying the "right of food to people". Dikshit said that scheme will be implemented in the state from September 1 and hoped the target of reaching it to 73 lakh beneficiaries in the state would be met by January next year. The Bill, which has

been the pet project of Sonia Gandhi who is also UPA Chairperson, is the biggest such scheme in the world with the government spending estimated at Rs 125,000 crore annually on supply of about 62 million tonnes of rice, wheat and coarse cereals to 67 per cent of population — around 82 crore beneficiaries. Under the scheme, the

beneficiaries will have the right to get 5 kg foodgrains every month at highly subsidised rates of Rs 1-3 per kg. Congress believes that the food security and direct benefit transfer scheme would be some sort of game changer for the party in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls on the line of MNREGA and farmer loan waiver schemes.

CBI claims to have new evidence in Ishrat case N

EW DELHI: CBI has claimed to have laid their hands on new evidence in connection with its probe into Ishrat Jahan fake encounter killing case which would help in buttressing its investigation into the larger conspiracy behind the incident. The sources said the agency is analysing the ‘circumstantial evidence’ which might help in giving location of some accused persons at the time of the crime. They said the agency might also question former Special Director of Intelligence Bureau Rajinder Kumar, now retired, in the light of the new evidence, reports PTI. The sources said they would try to file the supplementary charge sheet in the case giving details of the conspiracy behind the incident in which 19-year old Ishrat and three others Javed Sheikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed by Gujarat police in June, 2004. CBI's charge sheet accuses seven police officers of Gu-

jarat Police of murder, kidnapping and other related crimes under the Indian Penal Code. CBI is also ascertaining the authenticity of tapes of purported conversations of Gujarat government officials discussing ways to help the accused police personnel in the case, the sources said. The agency had submitted the tapes to the trial court in Ahmedabad in a sealed cover and would refer to these conversations in its supplementary charge sheet, they said. CBI, probing the case, has been able to get detailed information about Ishrat and Javed as it included the statements of their relatives and people known to them in the charge sheet filed on July 3. It has so far not been able to reach any conclusive point on the identity of Johar and Rana. CBI has in its charge sheet neither given any details about the antecendents of the duo nor the motive behind their presence in Gujarat.

SAIL Q1FY14 PAT at Rs4.5bn was higher than our estimate as well as the consensus due to lower tax rate and a surprise increase in realizations by 1.3%QoQ. SAIL sounded confident of commissioning of its expansion projects but we remain circumspect about the substantial increase in commercial production, we factor only 0.5mn tonne and 1.2mn tonne in FY14E and FY15E respectively. We continue to maintain that it will be challenging for SAIL to sell incremental volumes without substantial margin erosion, given the large surplus in the domestic steel markets. We have reduced our valuation multiple (EV/ EBITDA) for SAIL to 5.5x from 6x (given the deteriorating balance sheet, overhang of wage revision on employee cost, and uncompetitive conversion cost). We continue to maintain Sell on SAIL with a price target of Rs35 (5.5xFY15EV/EBITDA+0.5x CWIP) weak steel price scenario, subdued demand and uncompetitive cost matrix. SAIL’s Q1 FY14 sales volumes at 2.62mn tonne (DCe:2.5mn tonne) were up by 4.8%YoY but decreased sequentially by 18.9% due to seasonality. Sales realisations rose by 2.4%QoQ to Rs38573 as against our estimate of 1% fall in realizations. Net sales at Rs102.6bn (-4.7%YoY/-16.7%QoQ) were marginally higher than our estimate of Rs 102.15bn. However key concerning part was the increase in inventory by 273000 tonnes to 1.45mn tones Raw material cost per tonne fell by 10.7%QoQ to Rs15483 per tonne as against our expectation of Rs16904 per tonne. Employee cost increased by 15.2%YoY to Rs22.94bn higher than our estimate of Rs22bn as it provided Rs1bn towards actuarial valuation.

First Call Research calls a ‘Buy’ on Pidilite Ind. CMP: Rs. 234

ICICI Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Cox & Kings CMP: Rs. 103

Target Rs. 127

Cox & Kings’ (C&K) Q1FY14 performance remained above our estimates both at the topline and bottomline level due to better-than-expected growth in leisure and education & camping division of HBR led by onset of the peak season. Operating revenues for the quarter improved 10.2% YoY to Rs 586.2 crore. The overall growth is mainly attributable to an improved performance from the leisure division (outbound domestic) and pick-up in the camping business. The domestic leisure segment grew 16% YoY to Rs 145 crore while revenues of the international leisure segment declined 11% YoY to Rs 108 crore due to a subdued macro environment. The performance of the education and camping division improved due to this being the peak season and on strong demand. The education division exhibited 14% YoY growth and the camping division witnessed 22% YoY growth. Healthy cash flow to aid in trimming debt; maintain BUY rating: The company is focusing on trimming down debt through cash generated from the business, which, we believe, would improve its profitability, going ahead. However, considering the tough economic environment, we revise our target multiple downward and arrive at revised target price of Rs 127/share (i.e. at 5.0x FY15E EPS).

According to Lalit Kumar Jain, Chairman CREDAI and CMD,

Kumar Urban development Ltd, real estate projects with investments above Rs. 1000 Cr. have been routinely facing inordinate delay in securing approvals. “We urge the Union Government to form a committee to speed up clearances for such projects,” he said. The delay in obtaining environment clearance for big ticket real estate projects has become a major deterrent for developers. For instance, in Maharashtra alone, more than 1,200 proposals with an estimated investment of over Rs. 1 lakh crore are stuck in EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) clearance.

SAINA UNHAPPY OVER ‘WRONG’ LINE JUDGEMENTS

SPORTS

29

Azad Shrivastav | ADC

M

UMBAI: Her team Hyderabad Hotshots may have easily downed the high flying Pune Pistons 4-1 but Saina Nehwal, who won a crucial point for her side after a grim struggle against world number three Juliane Schenk, said she was unhappy with some of the rulings of the umpire. "In second set, I felt many points went against me. Many line judgements, obviously mistakes could happen, I just felt they went against me. It was not one or two but five or six. I was not happy. Umpires should overrule also. It's his duty but I think none of the calls were overruled. Finally we pulled out the match. Just leave the negative things and it is all good," Saina said. The Hyderabadi said she lost her composure after many decisions

did not go in her favour. "(In the second set) I just lost control and got a little bit aggressive. I was leading well but she equalled it. But then I tried to just stay calm and had long rallies with her. I think that really worked well. She was getting tired. In third set I felt she was giving away points because she was tired," she said. The 23-year-old made a comeback after losing the first game to notch up a win against the German 17-21 21-19 11-6. The London Olympic Games bronze medallist admitted that it was a tough match that went on for close to an hour. "Schenk is a world class player. For a long time, I have been having tough fights with her. Last year I had defeated her quite easily but this year in Indonesia Open she beat

me. It was a tough match. In first set, since she was on the faster side, her strokes were falling sharply. Always one side is going to be against you (because of the AC) but in third game I was good from the slower side. I just tried to maintain the pace because obviously she had quite a few sharp strokes. But third set was quite good. I was moving for all the strokes very well." "I was just ready for a long match. She is a tough player and that is what happened. She just kept on fighting till the last point," she said. The world number four enjoys a superior win-loss record of 9-4 against Schenk and admitted she feels comfortable playing against her. "I just play my game with her. Obviously many players find her game difficult but somehow I just

get adjusted to her game. She always tells me that I give her a tough fight. It happens because we have a similar kind of a game," she said. The Hyderabad franchise is the table-topper after last night's win, with 11 points, and Nehwal said is looking forward to tough games ahead. "I can't see it (the team) better than this. Pune Pistons who had won their previous two games quite easily, we beat them. I just want my team to give hundred per cent in each of the match. None of the matches would be easy now. All are tough (games). Next match we are playing against Mumbai, so that would be even tougher. I just wish they give their best in the next coming matches. The way our team played today, I am very happy with the performance," she said.

Now Hidayat says IBL auction was not fair

MUMBAI: Former Olympic and World champion Taufik Hidayat is the latest to criticise the auction process of the inaugural Indian Badminton League (IBL) and felt the foreign players were not treated in a fair manner as compared to their Indian counterparts. Hidayat was bought for a meagre USD 15,000 (same base price) by Hyderabad Hotshots. However, his less experienced teammates -- Pradnya Gadre (USD 46,000, base price — USD 10,000), Tarun Kona (USD 28,000, base price — USD 15,000) and Ajay Jayaram (USD 25,000, same base price) -were sold for higher amounts. "I felt bad when for the first time I saw on TV how much a player was bought for. I felt the IBL didn't treat the foreign players in the right manner. The price slab that was set was nonsense. Most of the foreign players were sold for their base

price while the Indian players were bought for much higher prices," Hidayat told reporters last night. The Indonesian said it was his first and last IBL. "I felt the IBL organisers did not take world rankings into consideration. This is my first and last IBL," Hidayat said on the sidelines of a practice session here yesterday. The 32-year-old Hidayat is a three-time Asian Games gold medallist, who retired from the game after the Indonesian Super Series in June this year. Hidayat is not only player to have criticised the IBL auctions. Earlier, 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning combination of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa had had slammed the League's decision to slash their base prices at the last moment, terming the move as "disrespectful" and "absurd". The IBL had reduced Jwala and Ashwini's base price to USD 25,000 from USD 50,000. Men's doubles specialists Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas had also claimed that their base prices were slashed from USD 15,000 to USD 5,000 without their knowledge. However, Hidayat's Hyderabad Hotshots team-mate defended the IBL organisers and said that the Indonesian should not expect too much since he has already retired from the game. "I think world number one (Lee Chong Wei) got the highest price (of USD 1,35,000). I don't think there is anything unfair about it.”

Lethal Wei, great Dane Baun lead the way for hosts

MASTER OF THE GAME: Lee Chong Wei provides a net gain for Mumbai as (right) cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar and team owner Sunil Gavaskar look on.

M

UMBAI: Suitably bolstered by the presence of World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in their ranks, the Mumbai Masters surged into a commanding winning 3-1 lead against Krrish Delhi Smashers in the Indian Badminton League here at the NSCI stadium courts on Tuesday. The absolutely lethal Malaysian Wei packed too many guns for his Malaysia compatriot World no 17 Liew Darren romping to a 21-12 21-16 in a mere 35 minutes. The goodly crowd which included India’s favourite cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and other cricketers that included former captain and Masters team owners Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Agarkar was treated to a sterling display of power badminton as Wei proved

far superior to Liew in the first game but his opponent did put up a fight in the second. The 26-year-old Liew in fact led for a major part of the second game, before Wei breathing fire and brimstone with his splendidly angled smashes took the lead at 14-13 before going on the wrap the match. Though the 30year-old Wei committed a whole lot of errors in this game, Liew who has never won even a game against the redoubtable Wei could not really take advantage and caved in meekly after the World No. 1 took the lead. Post his win Lee Chong Wei said “Good match, it’s great I’m very happy, this victory is very important for me and it’s good to win points for the team against such a difficult team.”

Next it was the turn of Dane Tine Baun to take the stage.
