fter 11 days of interrogation, the Kalamboli police have extracted a confession out of seven men arrested on August 8 for robbing a man of two mobile phones, a branded watch and a 14 gram gold chain on August 1. Rajkumar Verma, a resident of Kalamboli was driving back home with his family at 11.30 pm when his car broke down near Sector 20. When he got off to check what was wrong, he found himself surrounded by seven men armed with choppers and iron rods. “The accused threatened him, hit him with the chopper and snatched two mobile phones, a branded watch and a 14 gram gold chain and fled,” said Mahesh Tarade, Police Inspector, Kalamboli police station. “After a few days on August 8 we could suspect that the same group is going to commit the crime in Belapur for their next target”, said Tarade.

A complaint was registered against the unidentified men. On August 8 the Kalamboli police received a tip off of a possible attack by the same gang at Belapur and reached there in time to nab them near Belapur station. “We have recovered a Nokia E71, Nokia C2 and Samsung phone, the choppers and the rods used as weapons as well as all the stolen gold,” added Tarade. The accused have been identified as Manuhar Mulla (41), Santosh Vika (28), Sanjay Yadav (32), Sanwal Mulla (300, Ashik Rehman (22), Rana Shaikh (23), and Shah Jamal Hussain (25) all of whom are residents of Kalwa and Bhindi Bazar. The seven have been booked under Sections 397, 395 and 427 of the Indian Penal Code and were produced before the court on Saturday. “The accused would loiter on empty roads during the night and stop cars and other vehicles and assault and rob the occupants and then flee,” said Tarade.

Women’s safety: Railways need to pull up their socks ONCE again we witnessed the incident of a woman (this time an American national) being attacked on a suburban local on Sunday (18th). This follows the very recent incident of molestation attempt on the lady who was travelling in the suburban train compartment, on 27th July between Mahalaxmi-Lower Parel stations. In the current case, what was more astonishing was that after the lady was attacked, she was made to wait at the Mumbai Central stn., as the GRP and RPF argued over whose responsiblity it was to provide her medical aid. Did they not have even a pinch of humanity when the lady was injured and bleeding? Is it not always better to take precautionary steps rather than invite trouble and go through mental disturbance when days are indeed bad? And especially, when you can’t even get honest and fast help from the police who are supposed to provide security. A Scoring Subject

ith the reduction in the syllabus of Algebra, the portion is now easier and a boon for the weaker students, as this subject is now more scoring. Let’s deal first with the chapters that are more difficult to score. Quadratic equations is a chapter most of the students find difficult especially the latter exercises in the chapter. Weaker students find word problems more difficult as they have to form equations. But I am sure that any student can overcome this difficulty with regular practice. The first chapter on Arithmetic Progression, is very scoring. Besides this, Linear Equations, Probability and Statistics I are very easy. Hence, weaker students must focus on them. Statistics 2 is a chapter, which includes drawing pie-diagram, histogram, frequency polygon and the frequency curve. Again very scoring. Students, you must focus on the basic concepts of every chapter as the sums are based on them. Textbook exercises and the problem set must be done thoroughly. Do the solved examples for extra-practice. You may refer to any other books for practice sums. Maths has to be practiced every day of the week, with Algebra and Geometry being done on alternate days. Students normally do not score well in Algebra as their basic knowledge of integers (this is where sign errors come in) solving of equations and simplifications using identities is not strong enough. Hence, revise your rules and especially all algebraic identities like (a+b)2, (a-b)2, a3+b3, etc. To end, on a positive note, students must remember that a student with average intelligence can also score nearly full marks in Maths, only if he or she puts in hardwork which includes daily practice. Be like a caterpillar who veraciously devourers the leaves. Develop an appetite for Maths, to overcome the barrier, the fears and to conquer every sum or problem that comes your way.

he Government of Maharashtra has assured the Bombay High Court that it would fill up 537 vacancies of teachers in the government-aided secondary and higher secondary schools in Mumbai within three months. The statement was made by Advocate General Darius Khambata, as the division Bench headed by Chief Justice asked the state to complete the process of recruiting before Diwali so that students would benefit in the second semester. The Advocate General also assured that the state would consider filling up vacancies in the primary schools as well, reports PTI. Taking suo moto (on its own) cognisance of newspaper reports regarding shortage of teachers across government schools in the state, the High Court had a week ago sought the government's response. In an affidavit, Prakash Thube, Joint Secretary, School Education, on Monday stated that government had proposed to fill up 537 vacant posts of teachers in the governmentaided schools in the city; the proposal would be cleared soon. He said the authorities would direct the Director and Deputy Director of Education to give No Objection Certificates to aided schools to fill up the vacancies of teachers. This, he said, would be done a war-footing within two months of the state giving sanction for filling up these posts. In the affidavit, Thube sought a month's time for the state to give sanction; thus, he said, within three months the process of filling vacancies for teachers posts would be complete. The affidavit said that teachers were appointed on the basis of students' strength in respective school. But during a roll verification drive in 2011, it was found that many aided schools had bogus students on their rolls, in order to claim aid from the government fraudulently. Of the 2,03,69,638 students in government-aided schools across Maharashtra, 20,70,520 students were non-existing. The High Court has taken notice of media reports saying that 18,000 students studying in aided schools across the state had no teachers, and the freeze on recruitment last year had made the matters worse. In Mumbai, the reports said, 792 aided schools had shortage of 630 teachers in total. In some schools, parents had volunteered to teach, such was the shortage of teachers.

Though the story is a horror movie classic-house haunted by old spirits, it is done somewhat differently and provides for an interesting watch. Not only core industries such as finance, health care, food have evolved, but new industries like technology and internet intersected with all other industries to change the rules. Now, what about changes in MBA education? Some 100 years ago, we used to go to MBA campuses, learn basics of business from experts in the classrooms, work on due submissions, and build relationships with our batch-mates. << Dinesh Singh Does that sound any different Director-Student from what we do now in our Engagement, business schools? There are three key areas of change in our current Business School structure: Focus on processing information, rather than providing information: Even until the 90s, several people carried their notes with them when they graduated from top schools, for reference! Information was really only available in expensive books, and hand-written journals. However, today one can find most information for free or very inexpensively. This is putting more pressure on changing the focus from ‘collecting the dots’ to ‘connecting the dots’. The future schools will focus more on ‘learning’ rather than ‘teaching’. The difference between teaching and learning is similar to the difference between tasks and achievements. Teaching is a task, and making students learn is an achievement. We might be performing our tasks but might not be achieving the right results. Using the workplace as a learning playground: The proliferation of manufacturing led to ‘campuslike’ companies in the first half of the 20th century. Everybody lived together and worked together. With the ‘knowledge industry’ being the main growth driver now and rapid globalisation, typical businesses tend to be much more distributed. Various tasks including managing teams, motivating people, and negotiations are performed in a distributed environment today. Business schools, however, are still pre-dominantly ‘campus-based’. Do they really need to be campus-based? Context is the king in education and there is

nothing better than a real business situation to learn from. Using the real world as the learning playground will add more to ‘learning’ and creating business leaders who will be ready to perform. Reducing the cost of MBA No education programme is more return on investment-driven than an MBA today. Think about this-you are a professional earning Rs.5 lakh and growing steadily in your career. You are thinking of joining a high quality MBA programme with a fee of Rs.10-25 lakh. With the opportunity cost of leaving your job, the overall cost for the programme can easily be more than Rs.25 lakh. With this in mind, what would be your primary criteria of choosing an MBA programme? Wouldn't it be the expected output salary after you finish your programme? As a corollary of this, if you are someone who wants to build business skills to take further risks in your career-may be become an entrepreneur, join an evolving industry, would you be willing to spend the amount to pursue your MBA knowing your short-term salary increase will not be significant after the MBA? In future, (perception of) quality of MBA education will not be proportional to the fee. The future of MBA lies in solving these challenges and leveraging these opportunities to focus on ‘Being-ApplyingKnowing’. This might mean a ground-up design of curriculum that helps students learn while applying. It might mean transferring the traditional burden of ‘lecturing’ to technology while faculty plays a much greater role as a coach. It might mean making a business school look more like the distributed ‘knowledge-based’ company using technology for greater collaboration.

They may experience separation anxiety, or worry about interacting with new and unfamiliar peers and teachers. They may have trouble adapting to a classroom environment where they will be expected to pay attention, follow directions, and share and cooperate with others. Handle this situation with a lot of love and care. Give firm but short instructions and do not expect anything too soon. He will slowly learn to adjust in the new environment. Constantly monitor the progress with the class teacher.

Safety of women in India has always been a concern, but Mumbai has always been perceived as safer in comparison to cities like Delhi. The recent attack on an American woman in a local train in the city has only highlighted the need for safety measures for women, especially on trains. We ask youngsters what they think of the same. Mumbai was that place at one time. I don't think it is anymore. I think things like pepper-spray, tasers, etc should be more accessible for women as an immediate step. In the long run, I feel education is the only way out. Being specific about trains, whatever happened to guards manning the ladies compartments? Wasn't that a rule? CBI claims to have new evidence in Ishrat case N

EW DELHI: CBI has claimed to have laid their hands on new evidence in connection with its probe into Ishrat Jahan fake encounter killing case which would help in buttressing its investigation into the larger conspiracy behind the incident. The sources said the agency is analysing the ‘circumstantial evidence’ which might help in giving location of some accused persons at the time of the crime. They said the agency might also question former Special Director of Intelligence Bureau Rajinder Kumar, now retired, in the light of the new evidence, reports PTI. The sources said they would try to file the supplementary charge sheet in the case giving details of the conspiracy behind the incident in which 19-year old Ishrat and three others Javed Sheikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were killed by Gujarat police in June, 2004. CBI's charge sheet accuses seven police officers of Gu-

jarat Police of murder, kidnapping and other related crimes under the Indian Penal Code. CBI is also ascertaining the authenticity of tapes of purported conversations of Gujarat government officials discussing ways to help the accused police personnel in the case, the sources said. The agency had submitted the tapes to the trial court in Ahmedabad in a sealed cover and would refer to these conversations in its supplementary charge sheet, they said. CBI, probing the case, has been able to get detailed information about Ishrat and Javed as it included the statements of their relatives and people known to them in the charge sheet filed on July 3. It has so far not been able to reach any conclusive point on the identity of Johar and Rana. CBI has in its charge sheet neither given any details about the antecendents of the duo nor the motive behind their presence in Gujarat.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Tuesday (August 20, 2013) a net 13.30 points (0.25%) and closed at the 5401 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5353 points level. It then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 5306 points level at 9.16 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 1.00 p.m. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 5417 points level at 1.20 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session, moved in a range of 111 points and closed a point above the psychologically important 5400 points level. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 29 were losers, while 21 stocks closed in the green. Buying was witnessed in realty, banking, oil & gas and FMCG stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in consumer durables and auto stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 14.31%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 679 were gainers, 646 were losers and 57 remained unchanged.

SAIL’s Q1 FY14 sales volumes at 2.62mn tonne (DCe:2.5mn tonne) were up by 4.8%YoY but decreased sequentially by 18.9% due to seasonality. Sales realisations rose by 2.4%QoQ to Rs38573 as against our estimate of 1% fall in realizations. Net sales at Rs102.6bn (-4.7%YoY/-16.7%QoQ) were marginally higher than our estimate of Rs 102.15bn. Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance has announced the launch of its first single premium plan – Canara HSBC Oriental Bank of Commerce Life Insurance Shubh Labh. It is a unit-linked non-participating endowment life insurance plan that helps customers meet their protection and investment needs. The plan provides a life cover and helps the customers generate wealth by investing in the funds of choice. It caters to the diverse financial goals various people have, depending which stage of life they are in – it could be starting a family, planning retirement, or then simply wanting financial freedom. Now Hidayat says IBL auction was not fair

MUMBAI: Former Olympic and World champion Taufik Hidayat is the latest to criticise the auction process of the inaugural Indian Badminton League (IBL) and felt the foreign players were not treated in a fair manner as compared to their Indian counterparts. Hidayat was bought for a meagre USD 15,000 (same base price) by Hyderabad Hotshots. However, his less experienced teammates -- Pradnya Gadre (USD 46,000, base price — USD 10,000), Tarun Kona (USD 28,000, base price — USD 15,000) and Ajay Jayaram (USD 25,000, same base price) -were sold for higher amounts. "I felt bad when for the first time I saw on TV how much a player was bought for. I felt the IBL didn't treat the foreign players in the right manner. The price slab that was set was nonsense. Most of the foreign players were sold for their base

price while the Indian players were bought for much higher prices," Hidayat told reporters last night. The Indonesian said it was his first and last IBL. "I felt the IBL organisers did not take world rankings into consideration. This is my first and last IBL," Hidayat said on the sidelines of a practice session here yesterday. The 32-year-old Hidayat is a three-time Asian Games gold medallist, who retired from the game after the Indonesian Super Series in June this year. Hidayat is not only player to have criticised the IBL auctions. Earlier, 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning combination of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa had had slammed the League's decision to slash their base prices at the last moment, terming the move as "disrespectful" and "absurd". The IBL had reduced Jwala and Ashwini's base price to USD 25,000 from USD 50,000. Men's doubles specialists Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas had also claimed that their base prices were slashed from USD 15,000 to USD 5,000 without their knowledge. However, Hidayat's Hyderabad Hotshots team-mate defended the IBL organisers and said that the Indonesian should not expect too much since he has already retired from the game. "I think world number one (Lee Chong Wei) got the highest price (of USD 1,35,000). I don't think there is anything unfair about it.”

Lethal Wei, great Dane Baun lead the way for hosts

UMBAI: Suitably bolstered by the presence of World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in their ranks, the Mumbai Masters surged into a commanding winning 3-1 lead against Krrish Delhi Smashers in the Indian Badminton League here at the NSCI stadium courts on Tuesday. The absolutely lethal Malaysian Wei packed too many guns for his Malaysia compatriot World no 17 Liew Darren romping to a 21-12 21-16 in a mere 35 minutes. The goodly crowd which included India’s favourite cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and other cricketers that included former captain and Masters team owners Sunil Gavaskar, Ajit Agarkar was treated to a sterling display of power badminton as Wei proved

The 26-year-old Liew in fact led for a major part of the second game, before Wei breathing fire and brimstone with his splendidly angled smashes took the lead at 14-13 before going on the wrap the match. Force India drivers determined to do well at Belgium N EW DELHI: Refreshed after the F1 summer break, Force India drivers Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil are determined to repeat the performance they displayed in the first half season when they take on the track at the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend. “I spent most of the time in Switzerland and did quite a lot of training. National Rugby championship begins from August 23

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir will host its maiden national level Rugby championship from August 23-25 at the Bakshi Stadium here. “The senior National Rugby 7’s championship 2013 will be held at Bakshi Stadium here from August 23 to 25,” captain of the Indian Rugby team Nasser Hussain told reporters here. Hussain said it was for the first time that such a national level tournament is being organised in the state and expressed hope that it will go a long way to improve the game here. Twenty teams from across the country will be participating in the championship. Hussain said that an orientation camp for physical education teachers and sports coaches will be held to train and certify them as Rugby professionals.

Indian archers misfire in World Cup

KOLKATA: India had a disappointing start to the Archery World Cup Stage IV at Wroclaw (Poland) with the country’s best medal hope Deepika Kumari slipping to 19th as the women’s recurve team finished sixth and men’s squad earning the fifth place in the qualification rounds today. According to information received here, Deepika shot 647 finishing behind Laishram Bombayla Devi who logged 649 points for an overall 18th place in the qualification rounds. Rimil Buriuly, the third member of the women’s recurve team, with a score of 632 finished lowly at 42nd place as the trio totalled 1928 for a sixth place in the team event. Asian Games silver medallist Tarundeep Rai was the best among the men’s trio as he finished 18th with 623, while Priyank (622) and Atanu Das (609) took the 20th and 42nd place for an overall fifth place in the team event. The poor show meant India were no good in the mixed team event with the pair of Tarundeep and Bombayla combining 1272 for ninth position in the rankings.
