Aft er oo ALL 5 CONVICTED SPP Ujjwal Nikam outside the court, yesterday.
SPP UJJWAL NIKAM WILL TODAY SEEK MAXIMUM POSSIBLE SENTENCE FOR ACCUSED IN SHAKTI MILLS GANG RAPE CASE
By Philip Varghese

n what can be termed as one of the fastest wrap-up of gang-rape cases in the city, the Sessions Court on Thursday convicted all the five accused in two separate gang-rape cases that had occurred in quick succession last year at the defunct and then desolate Shakti Mills compound at Mahalakshmi in South Mumbai. Even though Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi convicted the five accused, the two juveniles who are also accused in the crime, are yet to be tried. The four accused each were convicted in the two cases
which were tried separately, while three accused were common to both the cases. The convictions related to the two separate cases, one being the case of a young photojournalist who had lodged an FIR last August after being assaulted and gang-raped while on a photo-shoot assignment at the mill and another case relates to a 19-year-old telephone operator, who was gang-raped three weeks earlier at the same mill compound while walking through the mill as a short cut to the railway station with her then boyfriend. The hearing at courtroom number 19, located on the second floor of
the Sessions Court in South Mumbai witnessed huge crowd of lawyers, litigants and media personnel who had gathered to listen to the verdict. Interestingly, State Home Minister R.R. Patil also paid a courtesy visit to the court to listen to the verdict. The judge while pronouncing the judgment, convicted all five accused in both gangrape cases at Shakti Mill Compound including three who were common to both Vijay Jadhav, Salim Ansari and Kasim Shaikh. The other two convicted are Ashfaq Shaikh and Siraj Khan. In the telephone operator's case, it Continued on pg 8 «

Do you agree with India's cricket captain, M.S. Dhoni, that Indo-Pak rivalry has mellowed down now? Dashrath Pawar Cricket fan No.I think that was the personal opinion of Dhoni, but for the public an Indo-Pak cricket match is no less than a war.

Yes. Over a period of time, the craze of Indo-Pak cricket rivalry has gone down. Maybe because the boundaries are vanishing and horizons are increasing. Mihir Pandya BPO executive
Yes. Nowadays, there are several cricket matches and series. Maybe because of the very reason, the craze of Indo-Pak cricket has died down.
Gajanan Pattewar Entrepreneur
Yes. It seems so. I thanks to the recent matchfixing issues, the trust factor has gone down. And this is precisely the reason why the craze has mellowed down. Kajal Gohil Homemaker No. Still people are seen sitting glued to the television during Indo-Pak cricket matches. The severity is down, but still there is rivalry. W
e know there is anger and resentment towards the political establishment. As the face of government, the problems of the country have been dumped on us. However, my experience in the last few weeks that I have been meeting people is that it's not bad, in fact it is looking good, to some extent. They know me, that I am different from what other political parties are offering. In that sense the South Mumbai constituency is different and similar from last time – with advantages and disadvantages. The difference is that in 2009, the big issue among the multiple issues going on here, was that I went against Shiv Sena's Mohan Rawle who had won from there five times. But it was the MNS that came second and at the time it was new and untested. This time I know what their value is, I know what the candidate is about. I know the entire south central area that was merged with my constituency. In that sense, this time is similar to the
last. What is different is that the structure of my campaign has changed. Is Meera Sanyal (AAP) a threat? In the first two elections I have fought, there were 20 odd candidates in the fray. I do homework on each one, take no-one for granted. But I have to prioritise and focus upon some things. And it's a no-brainer that this time the fight is between MNS, Shiv Sena and me. In 2014, the MNS candidate has strengthened the perception of the party in South Mumbai. Last time they came from nowhere to slip past the Shiv Sena. This time Bala Nandgaonkar has worked in the area from Sewri to Colaba`has worked to strengthen his party base. If you asked me to quantify my strategy, I would say 60 per cent would be focused towards MNS, 30 to 40 per cent towards the Shiv Sena, which is fielding a candidate from outside the area, and 20 per cent to the others, AAP included. In areas where they are gaining traction, I will be addressing all the opponents, but let's face it, I know
who my real opponents are. Is there a danger that people in South Mumbai will be influenced by the 'Modi wave' and vote accordingly because they want to be seen as winners? In the last two terms and this time as well, I have found that every section has a different 'click' that drives them towards the candidate for whom they ultimately vote. To the Afternoon reader, for instance, I would say, regardless of who you are interested in at the centre, I am someone who comes from a large mainstream party, and you have to ask whether I, Milind, am capable, effective, whether I am a good guy for you. And I would also remind them of what I have done. I have brought in a housing regulatory authority, making Maharashtra the first state to do so, the only state, so far, to ensure home buyers are protected from errant developers. In the area of Communications, we are studying the effect of radiation from cellphone towers, but because these studies take a long time to provide conclusions, we have already brought in regulation to reduce cell tower radiation to one-tenth of what it was. For the youth, I have instituted a program in the last two years aimed at making them aware of Parliamentary democracy, More than 600 students in colleges here have been taking part in the mock parliament program that aims at bringing leaders among them together. Of these students, 100 are selected to go to Delhi, visit Parliament, interact with the speaker,
senior ministers, journalists and the administration, thus giving them a 360 degree view of what constitutes Parliamentary democracy. Actually the idea came from the students and it has done much to change perspective. The program provides for change through lessons in Civics 301! It is really a leadership thing. And there is another program I am developing, this one aimed at tourism. As minister of state for shipping, I have initiated a plan to develop the country's lighthouses into tourist attractions that people can enjoy. So many of them are defunct, others are crumbling. They can be used as a national tourism resource that will attract people. So far, we have taken over four, in Tamil Nadu and in Maharashtra. I know there are problems at the local issue, people have problems with party men, but I cannot get into that. I have to fight at the Parliamentary level. If you asked me to predict my chances, based upon the overall composition of the Constituency, the fact that 55 per cent is Marathi speaking, the fact that Bala Nandgaonkar has been working here for the past five years, if I win, he will be there right after me. I am going to my constituents to say - I've taken stands, I believe in some things, these are my opinions, this is what I can do for you. The rest has to be put aside, digested. Pointless going into detailed analysis, leave that to the television studios and editorial meetings, this is my theme, this is what people should know.
He makes it a point to keep himself informed.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2014
N
oted author and journalist Khushwant Singh, one of the finest Indian writers in English in contemporary times, died here yesterday at the age of 99. The veteran writer, who was ill and had faded from public life, passed away "very, very peacefully", his son Rahul Singh, also a journalist, told reporters and visitors. Khushwant Singh elevated English writing in India with uninhibited wit and humour and was equally facile with his pen on serious issues like the Partition in the classic 'Train to Pakistan'. He ruled the literary pages with his satirical take on contemporary issues but attracted controversy over what his critics called his obsession with writing on sex. Easily switching roles between author, commentator and journalist, Singh wrote on as diverse issues as poetry and politics. He began his dealings with media as information officer of the Government of India
in Toronto and Canada and was Press attachĂŠ and public officer for the High Commission in the United Kingdom and the Embassy in Ireland in 1948-50. Later he started his writing career with Yojana, the Planning Commission's journal which he founded and edited. Singh left a mark in the field of journalism, working as editor of the now-defunct 'Illustrated Weekly of India', the 'National Herald' and the 'Hindustan Times'. His weekly column 'With Malice Towards One and All' was so popular that it was syndicated in many dailies till a few years ago when failing health checked his prolific writing. Son of Sir Sobha Singh, a civil contractor and a prominent builder of Lutyens' Delhi, Khushwant was born on February 2, 1915 in Hadali (now in Pakistan). Singh, an outstanding novelist and a forthright political commentator, was nominated to Rajya
Sabha by the government under late Indira Gandhi. He was a Member of Parliament from 1980 to 1986. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 but returned the decoration in 1984 in protest against the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar by the Army. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India. Book lovers remember him for classics like 'Train to Pakistan', 'I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale' and 'Delhi - A Novel'. Singh kept on writing virtually till the end and at 95, he wrote the novel "The Sunset Club".
P
Khushwant regretted he saw women as objects of lust K
hushwant Singh had a regret in life - that he always looked at women as objects of lust. In "Khushwantnama: The Lessons of My Life", published last year, he regretted that he committed many "evil deeds" in his early years like killing sparrows, doves and rock pigeons. "I have also come to the sad conclusion that I have always been a bit of a lecher. From the tender age of four right to the present when I have completed 97, it has been lechery that has been uppermost in my mind. "I have never been able to conform to the Indian ideal of regarding women as my mothers, sisters or daughters. Whatever
their age, to me they were, and are, objects of lust," he wrote. He also felt he wasted precious time in "pointless rituals" and "socialising" and spending years of his working life as a lawyer and then a diplomat, until he took to writing. "I wasted many years studying and practising law which I hated. I also regret the years spent serving the government abroad and at home, and the years with UNESCO in Paris," he wrote. "Although I saw places and enjoyed life, and, having little to do, started writing. I could have done a lot more of what I was best at. I could have started my writing career much sooner."
Singh was known to wake up at 4 AM each day and write his columns by hand. His works range from political commentary and contemporary satire to outstanding translations of Sikh religious texts and Urdu poetry. His non-fiction includes the classic two-volume 'A History of the Sikhs', a number of translations and works on Sikh religion and culture, Delhi, nature, current affairs and Urdu poetry. His autobiography, 'Truth, Love and a Little Malice' was published by Penguin Books in 2002. Singh had done his schooling from Modern School in Delhi and
later studied at St Stephen's College here before moving to the Government College in Lahore. He also studied at King's College in Cambridge University. He practiced law at the Lahore High Court for several years before joining the Ministry of External Affairs in 1947. He had married Kawal Malik in 1939 and has son Rahul and daughter Mala. Malik had died in 2001. Besides being honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, he received the Punjab Ratan, the Sulabh International award for the most honest Indian of the year, and honorary doctorates from several universities.
REACTIONS - THE BULB IS EXTINGUISHED
resident Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today paid rich tributes to renowned author and journalist Khushwant Singh, describing him as a "fearless intellectual" and a "gifted authhor". The Prime Minister, accompanied by wife Gursharan Kaur, and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi visited Singh's residence at Sujan Singh Park and paid homage to the author. Condoling the author's death, President Pranab Mukherjee described him as a "fearless intellectual" who had sharp insight and unique wit, as well as sense of humour. In a condolence message sent to his son Rahul, the President said he was deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of Singh. The Prime Minister described Singh as "a gifted author, candid commentator and a dear friend" who lived a truly creative life." BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi tweeted, "My condolences on the passing away of noted author & journalist Khushwant Singh. May his soul rest in peace." Scores of eminent citizens including Kuldip Nayar, Bishan Singh Bedi and author Vikram Seth paid tributes to Singh at his residence. Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi remembered playing tennis with Singh. "His hearty laughter over certain shots! He played to enjoy and not compete!" Calling him a remarkable man
and a great writer, veteran journalist Mark Tully said Singh had a great sense of humour. "He never minced his words and was a courageous person. I remember once having dinner with him when he showed up his tremendous knowledge about Urdu poetry. What a lovable man he was!" said Tully. Leading journalist and author M.J. Akbar said Singh was an admirable man. "I have this unreserved gratitude for him. I was a kid, 20-year-old in a newspaper, and he really picked us up from nothing. He gave us opportunities which were undreamt of for any young person wanting to do anything," he said. "For him to recognise and bless you was virtually the hand of a benedict," Akbar added. Union Minister and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader E Ahamed today expressed profound grief at the death of eminent journalist and author Khushwant Singh. "As a journalist and writer he always stood for strengthening secularism and was a frontline soldier in the battle against fanaticism and fascism," he said in his condolence message here. Apart from his contributions as author, journalist and commentator, Singh would be remembered as a strong defender of secular values, he added. Akbar, however, said Singh resented those who had too strong

an ideology and was a "classical 20th century liberal". Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Rajmohan Gandhi remembered Singh as someone with a desire to build other people. "Apart from being a popular writer and utterly fearless man, what I found unusual in him, very rare in others was his great desire to build other people. He was always praising new authors, giving time to them. He was frank in his verdicts," said Gandhi. "To think Delhi, the world of literature and newspapers will be without him is a very very hard thought to accept!" he said. People from all walks of life took to twitter to offer their condolences. "The bulb is extinguished ...Goodbye Khushwant Singh," tweeted journalist Ashok Malik. "So khushwant singh goes, like we all must. What a life led! a 100 would have been excellent but he gave us 99 & we must be thankful for that," tweeted cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle. Writer Shobhaa De tweeted, "Khushwant Singh. End of an era. Only KS could say 'There's no condom for a pen.' And prove it!" Bollywood personalities like Shah Rukh Khan, Pooja Bhatt and Shekhar Kapur, Madhur Bhandarkar, Sandhya Mridul, Divya Dutta, Neha Dhupia, Sophie Choudry, actor-comedian Vir Das and anchor Mini Mathur condoled the death of the noted authorjournalist.

ive months after the Dockyard Babu Genu Market building collapse, the Brihanmumbai Munici-
pal Corporation (BMC) has failed to submit its technical and administrative inquiry reports. They were supposed to determine the cause of collapse that left 61 of its employees dead and 31 injured. According to the initial findings, the mezzanine floor of the building caused the collapse. The administration has photographs, which were taken in 2010, when BMC’s Market Department had inspected the building. The civic body was waiting for the chemical analysis reports of the material submitted to Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute. The reports will also reveal the quality of the

Laxman Vhatkar, directorin-charge of the technical report, said, “Our reports will be out in the next two or three days.” The administration stated after the incident that the inquiry reports will be submitted in a month’s time and decision will be taken soon. Additional Commissioner Rajiv Jalota said, “a technical committee report will be submitted in a day. Based on the findings of the same it will be decided whether there is a need for the officers inquiry or not.” After all the reports are out, a final call will be taken. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in
Coast Guard mock drill just a mockery Azad Shrivastav | ADC
SAREX fails to impress, presents the same old drill By Vishnudas Sheshrao
S
earch and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) incorporation with scores of national, state and local agencies, proved to be just another exercise on Thursday. Experts who were present as Observers criticised the exercise as mockery of a drill. There was hardly anything new to learn in this exercise and no courtesy was given by ICG for suggestions of other agencies. ICG has spent a huge amount to

It was merely a copy of previous Navy and Coast Guard exercises. Joint Municipal Commissioner SS Shine who is attached to the Disaster Control Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also participated in the discussion SAREX. He suggested to incorporate civil defense volunteers who are not professional swimmers.
A ‘victim’ being air lifted by a Chetak helicopter of the Indian Coast Guard. The exercise was scheduled to take place in the proximity of Alibaug, therefore it was suggested to develop infrastructure which included helipad and medical facilities required for ship collision victims, before the exercise. Besides that, newly developed infrastructure would have been helpful in future towards such incidents. Moreover, it would reduce the burden on Mumbai. ICG conducted SAREX -2014 on March 19 and 20 at and off Mumbai. Search and Rescue service requires critical and complex task along with professional acumen and full coordination with support agencies like hospitals, blood bank, ports, airports and roads. As part of drill, a cruise liner collided with a cargo vessel and two fishing trawlers at high sea. Distress Alert Transmitters (DAT) on board transmited distress signals for assistance. Immediately, ten

ships, two Dornier aircrafts, two choppers from coast guards and one navy war ship approached for assistance. All victims, from the Coast Guard were professional swimmers. Besides, they were seen sitting on floating platforms. So, there was no drowning or other mishap. The exercise was properly managed. Choppers came, threw rope, victims though professionals tied the rope around their shoulder were air lifted and dropped on the war ship. That was the end of the exercise. Director General Indian Coast Guard Vice Admiral Anurag Thapliya who had flown to the city to witness the exercise said, “6th version of national maritime SAREX was successful. Several agencies participated in this exercise. Such exercise will be helpful to face any untoward situation in future.”

had purchased the room from a person but could not get it transferred to his name as the secretary was reluctant. The reason for this is that Naik is eying the chwal, which is soon to undergo in re-development. By harassing the tenants, especially the new tenants of the chawl, Naik wants to purchase as many rooms as possible in the chawl. These purchases are not directly made by Naik but his men, posing as prospective buyers, for which the investment would be either done by Naik or the builder, who would be interested in constructing a skyscraper, with the blessings of Naik, said sources in the crime branch, who have analysed the on-going trend
by the mafia bosses of the city's underworld. These techniques would enable Naik to acquire most of the rooms in the chawl and in future he would be able to bring in his own developer for constructing the chawl. If Naik's techniques and calculation are materialised and considering the boom in the city's real estate with central Mumbai being a commercial hub, the entire project would fetch him anywhere between Rs.800 – 1,000 crore, added the crime branch officials. Meanwhile, both the accused were arrested under relavant sections of threatening in IPC and were released on bail on Thursday evening.
Former Pune Civic Chief submits report indicting irregularities in playground plot in Bhayandar
A
high-level inquiry committee led by former Pune municipal commissioner Shrikant Pardeshi has submitted his report to the state government authorities confirming rampant irregularities pertaining to a private plot earmarked for a playground opposite Maxus Mall in Bhayandar (west). Pardeshi submitted his report after carrying out a detailed probe and ground inspection to check the alleged irregularities. The probe had been ordered by the State Urban Development Department (UDD) following a complaint registered by former Janata Dal (S) corporator Milan Mhatre, who alleged massive exploitation of the ground for commercial benefits and violation of the terms of contract, executed between the developer and the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC). structions in the form of food stalls and concrete structures, but has also violated the agreement by using the ground for a period far more than the permissible number,” alleged Mhatre. After an on-ground inspection and cross checking of documents pertaining to the land, Pardeshi gave a patient hearing to the complainant before submitting his report before the UDD. “We are in receipt of the report which has indeed indicted the developer of flouting crucial norms to be followed as per the mutual agreement and we will ensure there is no further violation. However, some of the clauses in the agreement are itself erroneous for which we will have to table the proposal for rectification before the general body”, confirmed municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani. Residents of the area have alleged that the developer has turned the access road into a private property which falls in between the playground and a shopping mall.
The PIL had sought to raise the issue of total and utter failure of the state government and the police commissioner in initiating measures to recover losses and damages from persons and organisers who have caused huge loss to public and private properties on August 11, 2012. It had urged the court to intervene in public interest to restore people's faith in the system saying it is necessary in an unprecedented situation of a riot and violence of such magnitude which has completely shattered the faith and confidence of law abiding citizens and even of policemen. During the hearing on Thursday, Additional public

Under section 51(3) of the Maharashtra Police Act, a district magistrate is duty bound to independently inquire into the damage caused to both property and persons. Has this been done? Has a magistrate inquired into this and arrived at an amount? What steps has the state government taken to recover this amount? Case of the two juveniles to start on April 1
There is a juvenile accused too in both the cases. The trial of the two juveniles, one each in the two separate gang-rape cases, has yet to begin before the juvenile justice board. Juveniles - minors in conflict with law - who are less than 18 years old cannot be tried along with adults before a regular trial court in the country. They are tried by a magistrate assigned as an officer at the juvenile justice board. Such trials are less stringent and set in an atmosphere which is meant to be child friendly. The maximum punishment a juvenile offender attracts even for a heinous crime such as a gang rape is three years under the law. The law that governs such juveniles is the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.The two juveniles in these cases were caught by the police soon after the first FIR was lodged by the photojournalist followed by the FIR by the telephone operator. MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2014
Chaos at MU senate meet Continued from pg 1 « Fort Campus on Thursday. As per the new scheme, students will have to write an external exam for 75 marks and an internal examination of 25 marks. With the scaling down of marks, a student's marks will be averaged if the student scores lesser marks in the externals than the marks he has been awarded in his internal exams. A software will be calculating the average of the marks which will be finalised for the students. This was opposed by the senate members from the students' constituency, principals' and teachers' unions. The members stated that this is unfair for students, and if the scaling down is implemented, the varsity will lose its passing percentages while students will risk their marks and careers. Pradeep Sawant, senate member, said, “If the marks are scaled down, students have chances of failing in the exams and suffer loss of their careers. The varsity has already narrowed down the marking scheme from 60:40 to 75:25, and therefore it should not implement this scaling down.” As per the rule, the senate members are supposed to submit a list of questions to the varsity for discussion in the senate house. Once the questions are submitted, the MU shortlists the questions and gives an explanation for selecting and rejecting the questions. Once the question are selected, the varsity sends the answer-booklet to the members of the house. These answers are expected to be in detail with explanations, records and clarifications as demanded by the members. The question-answer booklet given by the varsity to its members this year carried answers in terms of acts and resolutions which made it difficult for the members to understand them. Most of the questions carried answers such as “as soon as possible” or “work in progress.” A question raised by a student representative, had a its answer as “section 2 (B)” which made the answer confusing. Reshma Patil, student representative and senate member, said, “We had asked a question about the examination fees paid by the students for which the varsity answered 'Section 2 (B)'. The varsity should be specific so that the students can understand the same”. In all, 38 questions were short-listed by the varsity which were answered in the answer-booklet with appendix, resolutions and section from Maharashtra University Act. Sanjay Vairal, senate member stated, “The answers are not as per the required detailing. These answers are for the students not for the varsity officials, these answers are being hidden from the students and the MU is misleading the senate house and its students”. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, who was the president of the house in the absence of the Vice-Chancellor, said, “We have given the required information and answers to the questions and senate members. We are not misleading anyone and the answers are as per the records and documentations present in the varsity”.
VC-less Senate meet
For the first time in the history of the MU, the ViceChancellor was absent for the senate meet. Varsity officials stated that Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rajan Welukar was unwell due to which the post of the President of the senate house was given to Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Naresh Chandra, who headed the senate meet yesterday.
Where is Kalyan sub-center?
More than two years after the declaration, the MU has not yet started the construction work at its Kalyan sub-center. With an aim to reduce the long travelling routines of students who have to attend lectures at the Kalina Campus, the MU had finalised 6.1 acres of land for the Kaylan sub-center. The land is now taken up by slums and encroachments but the construction work has not started yet. The members have asked the varsity to start work as soon as possible to which the MU officials stated that the work will be completed “as soon as possible”.
Virtual classroom 'Money Mess'
While issues regarding the MU's Virtual Classroom have been rising by the day, yet another issue was raised in the senate meet. The members alleged that the varsity charges a lakh of rupees for conducting a single lecture in the virtual classroom but the MU denied this stating that it does not charge any amount for conducting lectures in this classroom. Kavita Laghate, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institue of Management Studies (JBMIS) stated that they will be paying around Rs.40,000 to the varsity for conducting a two-hour lecture for 15 days.

he Congress has launched a scathing attack on the BJP calling it a party with trust deficit. After senior Party leader L.K. Advani expressed his displeasure at being given candidature from Gandhinagar for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Congress national spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi came down heavily on the saffron party. Speaking to reporters at Gandhi Bhavan yesterday, Singhvi said, “In the past 24 hours, it has become very clear that the BJP is nothing but a group of people who are driven by blind ambition and absolute lust for power. The happenings in the so-called
party with difference since Tuesday have proven that there was complete trust deficit within the BJP, that the party was completely communal in nature, and that it was a squabbling party”. “Advaniji is fearful of sabotage at the hands of Modi in Gandhinagar, so he wants to run away from there. Why would he otherwise want to contest from Bhopal? There is distrust towards Narendra Modi by a senior leader of his own party. How can the nation trust Modi? BJP's damage control mode is in farce, comedy and tragedy”, he added. He said that though the BJP had been trying hard to project itself as a secular party, it had failed to colour its com-
munal face. Two accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots case, Hukum Singh and Sanjeev Baliyan have been bestowed with tickets by the party. This is the party with a difference, which rewards those who divide and cause deaths. “The UPA government had outperformed the NDA government on key developmental parameters. Many states including Bihar, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana were far ahead in development as compared to Gujarat. The state of farmers in Gujarat is poor. Vidarbha: Suicides have not stopped Q
UITE a big chunk of Vidarbha’s population has always wanted to separate from Maharashtra. Decades ago, the complaint was it was getting step-motherly treatment. In all allocations, western Maharashtra was attracting more finance. Vidarbha has special needs and these have to be taken note of – none of these changes had any basis. Following complaints, the government made efforts to allocate more finance to Vidarbha. The weather has never been kind to Vidarbha. There has been rain when there should be sunshine and the sun when there should be rain. The government did not let down Vidarbha, but did its best to keep things going there. The people who suffered the most in Vidarbha were the farmers. Theirs was a never-ending story of misery and want. Farmers have always found it difficult to pay back loans taken against gold or their property. Despite the increased assistance given by the government, the lot of farmers never improved. Unable to pay back loans, unable to support their families with hopeless failure staring at them, they committed the unavoidable: they started committing suicide. Farmers’ suicides in Vidarbha became a serious issue. The government took some steps to provide them with some assistance, but that did not stop the spate of suicides in Vidarbha. It was clear the farmers wanted massive assistance and the government could not provide it. For the last couple of years, there was not much news about cases of suicide in Vidarbha. Unless a permanent and a big solution is found, the farmers will continue to commit suicide. And it looks like it has begun again. It was reported only a few days ago that as many as 21 farmers have committed suicide. This is a case which should attract more Central assistance. There is a Congress government in the state and it should have been able to get more funds from the Centre.

S once in the past, I want to take you to the mid-50s of the last century when I was the Press Trust of India’s correspondent at the United Nations. They were difficulty days for India. We were not going to be what the Chinese contemptuously described as the “running dog of American imperialism”. On our part we wanted to have an independent existence so we could talk back to Washington. We were considered to be highly ‘moralistic’ which Americans did not like and chastised us for it. Worse, we were greatly in need of food grain and were going round literally begging for the same. Americans looked down on us and while food grains, especially wheat, were shipped, it was for India a ship-to-mouth existence. One felt ashamed to be known as an Indian. Over half a century later, we are exporting foodgrains and we are charged by the US and Canada for subsidising the cost! We have come a long way. Meanwhile, it has now become America’s turn to sound highly moralistic, forgetting that it is unfit to do so. An expose in Mainstream (Feb. 13) tells it all. According to a well-known columnist, T.J.S. George who is quoting an independent research organisation in America known as Russell Sage Foundation, 40 per cent of American workers in apparel, textile and repair services are paid “less than minimum wages” and as much as 41 per cent of minimum wage violations in the US are against maids and house-keepers. To that can be added the rampant racial discrimination against Latino workers. That doesn’t worry the law-givers in the US. These laws are only applicable to the likes of Devyani Khabragades.
Union Carbide’s greed As George put it: “Hypocrisy expands further at the international level. America is the only democracy in the world not to recognise the International Court of Justice at the Hague. This enables the US to do things that are illegal and still not be answerable”. George adds: “David Headley, who played a crucial role in the terrorist attack on Mumbai was protected by the US from extradition to India. And, of course, there is Bhopal. Union Carbide’s boss Anderson escaped from India”. To quote George: “The US is so worried about the rights of one maid, but it turns a blind eye to hundreds of deformed kids who have been maimed by (Union Carbide’s) greed”.

There are hundreds of such instances of American hypocrisy. Have we all forgotten My Lai and the way American forces decimated practically an entire village including innocent men, women and children – because they were suspected of being communist or communist sympathisers. That was in Vietnam. Forget the drone attacks the US almost daily engages in, that kills scores of people with nobody raising their voice of protest. And can we forget the time when, under the instructions from Secretary of State Henry Kissinger a criminal if ever there was one, carpet-bombing was ordered over neutral Cambodia that went on for 14 months resulting in 6,00,000 recorded deaths? Kissinger kept it a secret from the US Congress and the Ameri-
Moral Panic in India MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath can people. The whole thing was kept a secret until David More wrote a book entitled Lying For Empire: How to Commit War Crime with A Straight Face. Kissinger should have been tried in the International Court of Justice and hanged in public. Instead the United States caught hold of Saddam Hussein of Iraq and hanged him and later desecrated his corpse. One of the major shortcomings of the Indian media is the lack of good political magazines, something like, say the old British New Statesman & Nation or The Economist. The Mumbai-based Economic & Political Weekly is truly a scholastic journal for a higher intellectual class, but what we want is a weekly that is readable by aam aadmi. There is happily one, though it is a monthly, and it is known as Bharatiya Pragna. The February issue is an excellent one which is strongly supportive of Indian nationalism which our western-educated so-called intellectuals wouldn’t care to read. One of the articles entitled ‘Why This Focus
The Theory of the Unconscious F
REUD’S theory of the unconscious is highly deterministic — a fact which, given the nature of nineteenth century science, should not be surprising. Freud was arguably the first thinker to apply deterministic principles systematically to the sphere of the mental, and to hold that the broad spectrum of human behavior is explicable only in terms of the (usually hidden) mental processes or states which determine it. Thus, instead of treating the behaviour of the neurotic as being causally inexplicable — which had been the prevailing approach for centuries — Freud insisted, on the contrary, on treating it as behavior for which it is meaningful to seek an explanation by searching for causes in terms of the mental states of the individual concerned. Hence the significance which he attributed to slips of the tongue or pen, obsessive behavior and dreams — all these, he held, are determined by hidden causes in the person’s mind, and so they reveal in covert form what would otherwise not be known at all. This suggests the view that freedom of the will is, if not completely an illusion, certainly more tightly circumscribed than is commonly believed, for it follows from this that whenever we make a choice we are governed by hidden mental processes of which we are unaware and over which we have no control.
on Rape in India’ by the world media should be must reading because it raises an important issue. The author is one Maria Wirth, but we now of what she is. According to her, on any given day there are 200 rapes in the US, some 170 in South Africa and in western cities the statistics show a high percentage, much higher than in India. And many of these would have been gang rapes. And in many cases the girl or woman would have been killed. Why don’t our Indian media publish rapes committed abroad when western media is full of stories of rapes in India? For that should we blame western news agencies like Reuters, AP, UP? Are these agencies to which we subscribe holding back western crimes while freely propagating rape crimes in India? Why can’t these agencies be pulled up? We specialise in demeaning ourselves all the time. Why don’t our alleged intellectuals in power look into this? And what is the PTI doing in this matter?
The postulate that there are such things as unconscious mental states at all is a direct function of Freud’s determinism, his reasoning here being simply that the principle of causality requires that such mental states should exist, for it is evident that there is frequently nothing in the conscious mind which can be said to cause neurotic or other behavior. An ‘unconscious’ mental process or event, for Freud, is not one which merely happens to be out of consciousness at a given time, but is rather one which cannot, except through protracted psychoanalysis, be brought to the forefront of consciousness. The postulation of such unconscious mental states entails, of
MATTER & SPIRIT course, that the mind is not, and cannot be, either identified with consciousness, or an object of consciousness. To employ a muchused analogy, it is rather structurally akin to an iceberg, the bulk of it lying below the surface, exerting a dynamic and determining influence upon the part which is amenable to direct inspection — the conscious mind. Deeply associated with this view of the mind is Freud’s account of instincts or drives. Instincts, for Freud, are the principal motivating forces in the mental realm, and as such
Again, writing in Mainstream (Feb. 13) L.K. Sharma, a senior journalist noted that there is ‘Moral Panic in India’. There is. Westerners can write much about India but our intellectuals will defend their rights under freedom of speech. Oxford University Press recently had to withdraw a certain book on Hinduism denigrating it. My simple question is: Why don’t our Indian – Hindu – intellectuals write a book denigrating Islam or Christianity, claiming right of free speech? They will welcome – even praise – foreigners damning us and think they are standing up for values. They are only standing up for self-demeaning. And they are cowards. Bharatiya Pragna incidentally carries another article saying ‘Mother India Safer than Uncle Sam’, and claiming “the savings appetite of Indian families is an economic goldmine for India.” According to author Akila Srinivasan who is an insurance industry veteran, he sees India more insured by Indians than America by Americans because “the chief architect of the economic cushion provided by Indian families is the woman. Thank God, there is at least one Indian who has something nice to say about his fellow country people, men and women. I am sick of our western-educated intellectuals and their pompous statements. We can do without them. they ‘energise’ the mind in all of its functions. There are, he held, an indefinitely large number of such instincts, but these can be reduced to a small number of basic ones, which he grouped into two broad generic categories, Eros (the life instinct), which covers all the self-preserving and erotic instincts, and Thanatos (the death instinct), which covers all the instincts towards aggression, self-destruction, and cruelty. Thus it is a mistake to interpret Freud as asserting that all human actions spring from motivations which are sexual in their origin, since those which derive from Thanatos are not sexually motivated–indeed, Thanatos is the irrational urge to destroy the source of all sexual energy in the annihilation of the self. Having said that, it is undeniably true that Freud gave sexual drives an importance and centrality in human life, human actions, and human behavior which was new (and to many, shocking), arguing as he does that sexual drives exist and can be discerned in children from birth (the theory of infantile sexuality), and that sexual energy (libido) is the single most important motivating force in adult life. However, a crucial qualification has to be added here — Freud effectively redefined the term “sexuality” to make it cover any form of pleasure which is or can be derived from the body. Thus his theory of the instincts or drives is essentially that the human being is energised or driven from birth by the desire to acquire and enhance bodily pleasure. — Sigmund Freud

Adamant Advani L.K.Advani is definitely over 80 years of age and has played a long political innings. It is now time for the younger generation to take over. He earlier wanted to become prime minister in which case he would have been exactly like Manmohan Singh and now he wants a ticket from Bhopal. In all other faculties there is an age limit beyond which a person cannot serve, a maximum of 75 and that too in the private sector. In government service it has been increased from 60 to 65 from the original 58. Why is it so? It is to give chance to the younger generation. I strongly feel that Narvekar who has criticised Congress-NCP on various TV channel debates is an opportunist and has betrayed the Sena. What is the guarantee that he will not betray the NCP in the near future? The urgent need of the hour is that such politicians with selfish backgrounds must be rejected by the voters completely in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections to teach them a very strong lesson to wipe them out permanently from the poltical map of the country. It is high time the Shiv Sena and its leadership must ensure that Rahul Narvekar must be defeated with a huge margin and must lose its deposit in the election.

EW DELHI: In twists and turns marking the top-level rumblings in BJP, L.K. The 86-year-old leader made the announcement shortly after party president Rajnath Singh issued a statement saying that it was for Advani to choose whether to contest from Gandhinagar or Bhopal, seeking to end a 24-hour drama that exposed the simmering tensions between him and Narendra Modi. Advani, who has been sulking since yesterday over the party decision to field him from Gandhinagar against his wish of Bhopal, said Modi came to him this morning and "emphasised that the people of Gujarat are keen that I represent Gandhinagar Lok Sabha once again." JP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday asked farmers in Maharashtra not to resort to suicide and assured that his party was firmly behind them. "Committing suicides is not the way to fight the crisis," Modi said during a 'kisan pe charcha' (discussion on farmers) interaction with farmers at this village in Yavatmal district of Vidarbha region which has seen the maximum number of farmer suicides in the last decade, reports PTI. BJP will support the farmers in Maharashtra who were recently hit by severe hailstorms, Modi said. "Not only are farmers committing suicide, but after them, their family members are also ending their lives," Modi said. Saying that more farmers were dying than the number of fatalities in the war, Modi said this was not a political issue but an issue of national pain.

Burgers in Town
pg 18 We bring you our picks of sunglasses to beat the heat with MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2014
Three Wise Men Just mention the words 'chicken' and 'burger' together and a hard-core burger buff will most likely stare you down with an expression of 'you don't know what you're talking about.' However, sometimes a chicken burger can also be succulent and simply amazing and Three Wise Men is proof of that. Their in-house recipe of beer-marinated chicken patty results in a wonderfully crisp patty that, after a bite, gives way to a delicious and cheesy melt-in-your-mouth experience. The secret, they told us during our visit, is that they let the chicken marinate in the beer for as much as a whole day before grilling the patty. While that secret they are quite happy to tell us about, what they won't tell us (or you) is the secret to their lovely spicy-tart jalapeño mayo that coats the patty. The patty itself is wonderfully spiced and, thankfully, it isn't a one-off experience either. We've been there three times, and have never been disappointed with their Patty Melt Burger. Where Three Wise Men, Opposite Santacruz Police Station, Santacruz (W) Price `275
The 48Hrs Team went on the search for the best burgers in Mumbai and came up with this mouth-watering list of juicy burgers. Whether you like a basic burger or a gourmet one, there is something on this list that is sure to hit the spot
>> The Chicken Honey Mustard + Bacon Burger at Jamjar Diner is a personal favourite
JaMJar Diner We love JamJar diner for a lot of reasons, but the most important reason is that they have the most delicious food. Burgers are a must-try at the restaurant and while everyone goes gaga over the Juicy Lucy (which is a delicious burger, so do try it by all means) we're going to let you in on a different, but equally delicious burger. The Chicken Honey Mustard + Bacon burger is a soft chicken picatta patty, with crispy onions and chipotle mayo rounding it off. Served with crispy fries and loaded with flavour, you simply must try it out. Where Behind Washing Bay, Yari Road, Versova, Andheri (W) Price `282
Café anDora If you want a no-frills burger, minus the fancy sauces and elaborate patties, head to Café Andora. This popular college eatery has been around in Bandra for ages now and still dishes out a basic old-school burger, reminiscent of the ones you've grown up eating before ingredients like bacon, stone-ground honey mustard and arugula found their way into your burger. Head here if you want a basic chicken patty sandwiched between a sesame speckled bun that is both satisfying and light on the pocket. Great for a snack or to curb a nagging burger craving, Café Andora has our vote for the best value for money burger. Hard rock café Over the years, Hard Rock Café has developed quite a reputation for itself as far as burgers are concerned and there is no doubting why. Dig into their Legendary 10 Ounce Burger and you're sure to be hooked. A thick, succulent beef patty, topped with bacon, onion rings, tomatoes, lettuce and melted cheddar cheese makes this burger an absolute delight. If you don't want to try this classic, they also have several other options such as the California, Tex-Mex and Mediterranean Burger. It is quite a large burger, so make sure you work up an appetite before heading here. Where Hard Rock Cafe, Behind Bombay Dyeing, Kamala City Mills Studio, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, Worli Price `450

>> The burgers at The Little Door are high on taste and are value for money at the same time
LittLe door If the great music, cute décor and little blue door weren't enough to get you to visit The Little Door, the food should be. With a range of the most delicious wedges, fries, onion rings, nachos and all sorts of food you can imagine, there's something for everyone here, included vegetarian, chicken and beef burgers. But, we'd opt for their delicious Beef Burger in a heartbeat. Not only is it reasonably priced, the burger, which comes with fries and salad at the side, is loaded with vegetables, topped with bacon and a herbed fried egg and garnished with the cutest cherry tomato. It's succulent, filling and worth every rupee. Where Shree Siddhivinayak Plaza, Plot B 31, Off New Link Road, Andheri (W) Price `297
indigo deLi It's no secret that you have to try the BBQ Pulled Pork Burger (`585) at Indigo Deli. With sweet, picked onions as relish and a delicious slathering of pulled pork between soft burger buns, it's one of the best in the city. But, according to Rahul Sawn, you shouldn't miss out on the Blackened Salmon Burger either. He says, “It's one of their new burgers, so I decided to give it a try even though blackened salmon doesn't sound like it would taste as good in a burger. It's so delicious! It's creamy, tender and nothing like anything I've tasted anywhere in the city. It's served with a salad and some delicious cucumbers.” With the option of add-on toppings (although those are quite expensive) and your choice of cheese, there's no reason we can think of not trying this out. Where Outlets across the city Price `645
WHite oWL If you're the sort of person who believes that good burgers must be beef burgers, you're going to agree with Ryan Vaz's pick of the best burger. The 23-year-old Andheri resident tells us that he loves the White Owl Sandwich Gourmet Beef Burger from >> White Owl’s Sandwich Gourmet Beef Burger, is loaded with relish, onioon rings and a fired egg too
The White Owl and when we hear what he says, we can't wait to try it ourselves! “The burger is so much more than just a patty and bread. It comes layered with a fried egg, relish, onions and onion rings! There's grilled tomato and wedges on the side also — and the wedges are really delicious!” We're going to take his word for it and try it out the next time we visit. Where One Indiabulls Center, Tower 2 Lobby, Senapati Bapat Marg, Lower Parel Price `425

Bacon Fries deserve a special mention. You could eat your way through their menu and start again at the top, making a couple of unscheduled stops at the ten-ounce gem in between.” We agree completely! Where 2, Kalpitam Apartments, Opposite Hawaiian Shack, 16th Road, Bandra (W) Price `339
sundance café Sundance Café has always been the place to go when you're in South Bombay and with its new menu, it's working out to being a really great place for food too. Try their Tenderloin Burger when you visit. It's a delicious steak burger full of moist relish and mayo, crisp lettuce and served with a side of crisp, salty fries. Don't forget to tell them how you prefer your burger though, or you'll get it extremely well done. Where 42, Eros Cinema Building, Maharishi Karve Road, Churchgate Price `475
We have reviewed a tonne of restaurants but there have been just a handful that keep us coming back for more. Between Breads in Bandra is one such joint. Nothing fancy, nothing over the top, just great burgers. Bandra resident Rajesh Tahilramani says, “The Ten-Ounce Bacon Burger is by far the best burger I have had in this city, marquee name restaurants included. As the menu goes it’s pretty straightforward comfort food, packed with the good stuff with a lot of beef on the menu (don’t even go near there if you are a paneer patty loving person; McDonald’s tHe Big nasty down the road does a perfectly good aloo-tikki burger). We tried the Philly Steak Sandwich, the Chicken Cheese Burger and the The pub might be one of Bandra's most happening places on Beef Burger (all excellent). The Coffee Banana Shake and the the weekend but we suggest you skip the sardines-in-a-tin time slot and head there for a relaxing meal during lunch or on a weekday. Why? So you can eat their burgers in peace. Order the All American Beef Burger (`250-`340), if you’re not a beef eater then they also have a lot of pork, chicken, lamb and vegetarian options. A word of caution however, these burgers are the reason why the pub is called nasty. They are humongous, come with fries as well as a side dish and could easily feed two greedy people. However, in a city where a good, solid burger is hard to find, (McDonald’s doesn’t cut it and you know it!) this heavenly thick patty, with a fried egg, cheese, tomatoes and sin is such a welcome treat. Other good options to try are their Hell’s Angel Burger (`275) and the Turkish Lamb Burger (`280). And of course, a pint of beer. Where Above Shatranj Napoli, Union Park, Khar (W) Price `250-`340
candies We love Candies as it is. But their Crispy Chicken Burger (the mutton version is pretty good too) makes us love them even more. The burger isn't very big but it's perfect for a quick lunch. A crunchy chicken patty is smothered with pickles, a dash of mayo and crisp lettuce all sealed in a soft bun. Every time we've eaten this burger (we've lost count!) it always hits the spot. Quality is consistent and it's very easy on the pocket. So, yes, we recommend you brave the college lunch crowd and grab this one of the go. ao Art Gallery is hosting Arunanshu Chowdhury as he showcases an exhibition with candid images. Called A Tree From My Backyard, the exhibition is all about the packaging of culture and tradition. With titles such as Handmade, Camouflage, Desi and Foreign Made, the paintings depict his way of life and while you may call them kitsch, the artist believes that his work goes beyond that, becoming another genre in itself. Arunanshu was awarded The
Elizabeth Green Shields Foundation Grant, Canada and the Ravi Jain Foundation Award, New Delhi in 1995. His works have been part of shows such as Asian Cultural Centre at New York, Across the Threshold at San Francisco and Words and Images by The Guild Art Gallery at NGMA. re you tired of hearing about how shorter skirts and lower necklines mean you're asking for trouble? Artisan's is inviting everyone to visit a unique exhibition for a good cause. Called Provoke/Protect, the exhibition features saris that carry slogans against rape The festival fuses art, health and recycling by questioning the notion of women's clothing as provocation. The concept, developed by ten women from Dharavi in February 2013 in response to the rape case in Delhi in 2012, has gained support from textile artists Nika Feldman and Susie Vickery, who up-cycled old saris sourced in Dharavi’s Kunchikurve. The symbols are drawn from popular culture and socio-religious beliefs and the creators came up with gritty slogans that include, “Lock up the rapist, not the woman.” The exhibition is held by the Dharavi Biennale, organised by SNEHA, an NGO that works to improve the health of women and children. Provoke/Protect was a series of standalone workshops that give residents an opportunity to realise their own talents and learn about health issues. The NGO also has a programme on prevention of violence against women and children. n organic café that ties in the concept of healthy eating, organic, wholesome food that cleanses and gives you energy without taking the fun out of your eating experience is what The Zen Garden Café is all about. An extension of Yogacara, the café is at one end of the establishment, meaning you have to walk through their yoga and ayurveda therapy centre to actually get to it. Housing four or five tables, the alcove is quaint, quiet and instantly gives you a sense of peace. The ochre tablecloth and small bunch of flowers on every table make The Zen Garden Café easy on the eyes. The trees and plants that surround the café, ensure a cool breeze is always wafting through at the open air garden café. One look at the menu is enough to tell you that there are several health benefits and advantages of healthy eating and although the benefits and nutrients of each dish to your metabolism, constitution and chakras are listed in extreme detail, they don't hold your attention for long. However, if your organic, healthy food wanting self feels that the options here are going to be too few, you will be pleasantly surprised to find dosas, crepes, wraps, momos, thalis, juices, smoothies and even desserts in healthy avatars. I started off with the Pure Magic Juice (`220), a blend of carrots, apples, celery, raw beetroot and lemon. I tried the Raw Vegetables Roll (`250) which had julienne carrots, cucumber, radish, scallions, peppers and celery in a rice paper casing, and the Cottage Cheese Rolls (off-menu) which had a cooked paneer bhurji-like preparation stuffed in the same casing. While the former was quite disappointing considering plain, raw vegetables aren't the most exciting of flavours,
the sauces that accompanied it made it a lot more palatable. The paneer roll was better, but nothing to write home about. Next, I tried the vegetarian and non-vegetarian Tibetan momos (`250 onwards). They were steamed just right and had a thin outer casing, but the filling lacked flavour. It was bland and nothing made it stand apart from the many momos you may have eaten courtesy your local momo stall. For a more substantial dish, we sampled the Mung Dal Falafels (`250) which use this particular lentil as it is easier to digest. It came with a red pepper hummus that was lovely, but unfortunately, the same can't be said about the falafels. They tasted like tikkis at best and lacked the much loved taste and texture you may associate with falafels. Next up was the Detoxifying Green Gazpacho (`140 onwards) that is a blend of raw spinach, broccoli, zucchini, celery, scallions, cilantro and green bell peppers. A few pomegranate seeds add a touch of sweetness to the soup and counter the raw taste of the vegetables that some may find unappealing. To finish it all off, I tried the Raw Chocolate Mousse (`250) made with bananas, coconut, soy milk, organic raw chocolate powder, dates and tahini. The chocolate was of a high quality, the coconut added the right amount of creaminess and the bananas give it sweetness. However, don't order this expecting a traditional mousse — neither is it's consistency as firm, nor is the taste similar. Their portions are good and so is the variety on the menu — with enough options for vegans as well. And, while the food tasted okay, it wouldn't be fair to leave out that it did not agree with my system. At all. Maybe my body isn't used to the healthy food, but I had not expected it to react so badly. Maybe I happened to catch them on an off day, but, this reviewer will be giving The Zen Garden Café a skip the next time.
A taste of Tex-Mex Popular Bandra joint Sancho’s has opened in Colaba. Dev Goswami visits the restaurant to find out what’s cooking
T
he first thing that strikes you the moment you step into Sancho's new outlet in Colaba is its rustic charm. From wood finish seating and wooden windows to mud walls and a guy crooning along with a guitar, Sancho’s gives off a vibe that will remind you of Hollywood westerns. Having never been to Mexico, I can't say how close the décor comes to representing the country, but rest assured that it is different from what you'd normally find in Mumbai. Having never visited the original Sancho's, but having a heard a lot (and I mean a lot) about it, I was looking forward to my dinner at their Colaba outlet. Maybe that's the reason the drinks were a bit of a disappointment. The Classic Margarita (`595) was just alright, though its strawberry variation was refreshing. The Red Wine Sangria suffered due to bad wine along with it being too watered down. However, their trademark Sancho's Martini (`425) was quite good; potent with a strong hit of vodka. While the cocktails were a mixed experience, the food made us forget about them completely. We started off with the Fiesta Nachos (`345) and Fish Taquitos (`295). The crunchy nachos along with the cheese sauce, guacamole, olives and jalapenos made for a flavourful start to our meal. However, it was the Fish Taquitos that held our attention. Served on top of a mini-tortilla along with a mix of sauces, the beer battered fish was super delicious, ending with a nice hit of chipotle. We next tried the Habanero Chicken (`325), which is a
simple dish (chicken cooked in peppers, onion and garlic) and is meant to showcase the Habanero chili — which it does perfectly. But, my only grouse is that the chef used tomato ketchup to counter the chili. Believe me, the chili does need countering (Habanero is one of the spiciest chilies in the world), but the ketchup kind of spoilt the after-taste for me. A better dish was the Chef's Special Tequila Jumbo Prawns (price as per size) served in a Habanero base (without the ketchup). It started off with a strong hit of the Habanero and finished with a delicious meaty flavour. The Talla Fish (`675), another Chef's Special, was wonderful as well. It wasn't as spicy as most other dishes at Sancho's, but had a flavourful combination of the usual Mexican suspects: beans, guacamole and salsa. We also tried the Chicken Enchiladas (`425) and the Chocolate Chicken Mole (`475). The former was good, but nothing exceptional. The latter, meanwhile, is an interesting and certainly unique dish that has to be had once, even if just to experiment. After some really good food, the deserts — Churros (`195) and coconut based Tres Leches (`195) — didn't disappoint us either. The Churros were quite good but the Tres Leches stole the show. Light and fluffy, it was the perfect ending to our meal. Overall, Sancho's is a must-visit for its food. Their overpriced cocktails are not quite worth it. But, in the food department you'll be left wanting more.

What’s cooking? Dunkin’ Donuts to open on Linking Road
I've put on 2 kgs just at the thought of these deliciously creamy and ohso-decadent donuts. The donut giant finally makes its way to Mumbai and we caught a quick glimpse of the store. It's huge! Although they haven't opened up as yet, the outlet is almost completed and they even have a few posters outside. We can't wait to try their Bavarian Cream and breakfast options. MUMBAI MUMBAI | FRIDAY, | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER MARCH 21, 03, 2014 2010
With summer vacations and long weekends around the corner, there is scope for some serious travelling to be done. However, make sure you have your travel etiquette in place, says Shirley Mistry
T
ravelling can be a fun, enriching and memorable experience. Apart from the usual road-bumps the only thing that can dampen your spirits is inconsiderate co-travellers with the lowest form of travel etiquette. While you may be aware of the basics, read on for a refresher on things you mustn't do while travelling.
Take care of your children In an ideal world, your children would behave themselves and stay put in their seat for a three hour flight. However, in reality, we all know that's not going to happen. Most children are restless, fidgety and hate nothing more than to be strapped into a seat for hours together. Carry enough things (such as movies and games on an iPad, colouring books and travel-size games) to entertain your child at his/ her seat.
aT BedTime...
>>No one co-travellers who shout and talk on the phone
Whether you are calling it a night or are indulging in a short nap, be sure to stick to your own seat when you are travelling on a bus or flight. Keep your arms on your own arm-rest, your blanket well within the limit of your own seat and most importantly — keep your head firmly on your shoulders. It is creepy when your head lands on someone else's shoulder as you snooze. And, if you are prone to your head lolling around while you sleep, might we suggest a travel pillow. Not only will it save you and your cotravellers the embarrassment, it will also give you quality sleep. If you are in a train and are occupying the middle or lower birth, snoozing till 12 pm the next afternoon isn't an option as you are inconveniencing every one else who is awake and wants to sit comfortably.
hogging luggage space Yes, we do understand that travelling by train frees you from the 15kg luggage limit that airlines impose, however, that doesn't mean you bring eight suitcases along. Limit your luggage to two pieces and keep them on your side of the berth. Even while travelling by air, make sure you keep minimum luggage in the over-head compartment so that everyone has space for their designated one piece of carry-on luggage. If you are travelling by bus, barring the absolute essentials, get all your other luggage stored in the hold beneath. Nothing is worse than someone else's luggage sticking out from underneath your seat.
smelly feeT! First of all, it is bad hygiene. Second of all, if you are stuck on a long flight, nothing is worse than subjecting your co-traveller to the ordeal that are smelly feet. Keep your feet firmly in your shoes for as long as the journey lasts. It is just something you need to wrap your head around!
clean up If you have decided to carry a three-course meal along with you, or have a toddler in your company, carry wet wipes and plenty of tissues to clean up. Nothing is more disgusting than messy eaters who spill everywhere and refuse to clean up. Be it a bus, train or flight, it is a shared space, so make sure you clean up after you eat. Having said that, also make sure you carry food that is fuss free. While puri sabzi may sound enticing, it runs the risk of spoiling sooner and will surely spread a foul stench. Stick to foods like sandwiches and rolls. Not only are they less messy to eat, but everyone around you won't know what you've eaten for lunch too.
pipe down Refrain from loud conversations on the phone. Keep the volume of your ringtone low and make sure your conversations don't disturb people around you. Moreover, if you are playing a game or watching a movie, doing so without plugging in your earphones is a cardinal sin and is sure to agitate and annoy everyone else on the flight, bus or train. If you've forgotten your headphones, mute the volume or don't watch the movie. It isn't fair to your cotravellers to have to listen to your noise. Š Courier Publications Private Limited. ith Sebi declaring Jignesh Shah-led Financial Technologies unfit to hold shares in stock exchanges and other related entities, it will have to dispose of holdings worth about Rs 2,500 crore in five companies. FTIL (Financial Technologies India Ltd) will have to sell shares in MCX Stock Exchange, rival National Stock Exchange of India, two nonfunctional bourses — Delhi Stock Exchange and Vadodara Stock Exchange, and MCX-SX Clearing Corporation within three months, Sebi said in an order yesterday. According to market sources, the total value of FTIL’s holdings in these five entities is estimated at about Rs 2,500 crore, although it could be difficult to sell these shares in the current scenario. Financial Technologies has 2.71 crore shares as well as 56.24 crore transferable warrants in MCX-SX, 57.5 lakh shares in MCX-SX Clearing Corporation, 14.96 lakh shares
in DSE, 2.9 lakh shares in VSE and 10,000 shares in NSE. The shares and warrants held in MCX-SX would account for a large chunk of the potential sales proceeds, the sources said, adding that FTIL had told Sebi it had no intention to convert the warrants. These are convertible into an equal number of shares. It recently appointed JM Financial as an advisor for the divestment of a stake in the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). In February, the FTIL board had constituted a committee to propose and oversee a restructuring plan, which included the sale of up to 24 per cent stake in MCX. FTIL is a listed company with a market valuation of Rs 1,738 crore, while MCX, also listed, is valued at Rs 2,575 crore. Incidentally, despite the negative news, shares of MCX closed the day on a positive note 1.35% higher at Rs 505. Shares of FTIL also rose by 1.85 % to Rs 378.

trum trading significantly improve regulatory risks for Indian telecoms, the risks will still be above-average compared with those in global markets. This is because some ambiguity in past policies has resulted in legal disputes between the government and the telecoms, and greater clarity needs to emerge on the policies rolled out in 2014. "We believe the new policies are significant and provide a good starting framework for improving the industry's prospects," said Dangra. The report notes that ambiguity about the new guidelines and any reversal of policy direction from the regulators, a new government, or the judiciary is a key risk for India's telecom industry, although this appears less likely. Aggressive and prolonged price wars, including those in the data segment, along with the entry of new players could also be detrimental to the industry.
Elections Won't Kick-Start Investments: Credit Suisse By A Business Reporter
E
lections in India are unlikely to kick-start investment cycle in a short period of time as against popular perception that a new government led by BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi could immediately revive the markets and economy, says a Credit Suisse report. "We disagree with the consensus view that elections can revive the investment cycle. Only a fourth of projects are stuck with the central government, and two-thirds of these are in power and steel, both wracked with massive overcapacity," the research report says. According to the global financial services major, there can be four scenarios post elections, Narendra Modi led NDA government with 2-3 allies; Narendra Modi led NDA government with 5-6 allies; other leader led NDA government with 8-10 al-
lies or Third Front government supported by Congress. In the first scenario, the rally in the market is likely to continue (assuming supportive global cues) "for 2-3 months till market participants realise Government's inability to drive rapid changes and 1QFY15 results temper optimism," the report said. In the second case, there is likely to be a temporary lull in the market (flows-wise) till a post-poll alliance gets stitched up and given Modi at the helm, sentiments are likely to remain positive. In case of other leader led NDA government, markets are expected to take negatively to "No-Modi" at the Centre and a potentially unstable government and in the Fourth case there would be "unwinding of the beta rally as apprehension of a rating downgrade emerges." According to the global brokerage
major, new government is not likely to revive investment in the power generation for two reasons: Overcapacity and lack of power distribution reform; and slow growth in coal production. Going forward there can be three distinct phases in the market: (1) the run-up to the election results; (2) the three month period after elections; and (3) the period till the year-end. Opinion polls currently project more than 220 seat verdict for BJP led alliance. "Such a verdict would fuel a continuation of the rally in cyclicals," Credit Suisse said adding that a less than 180 seat verdict for BJP led alliance is likely to cause a major market correction". With better earnings revisions and growth than most other EMs, as well as declining inflation, India looks relatively more attractive than other emerging markets, Credit Suisse said.

"We will be raising USD 200 million through the ECB (external commercial borrowing) route in the next 10-15 days. We expect a go ahead from the Reserve Bank on the same in a day or two," NHB chairman and managing director RV Verma told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

o Daddy, the world’s largest technology provider of domain name registrations, web hosting and new SSL certificates, yesterday launched its latest integrated marketing campaign featuring Mithun Chakraborty. The campaign aims to get small and medium businesses in India online by featuring the benefits of getting a website. “We believe that small businesses and entrepreneurs are the driving force behind India’s economy and we are here to empower them with the right tools. An increasing number of small businesses in the country are turning to GoDaddy to help them easily and affordably establish their online presence,” said Rajiv Sodhi, GoDaddy India Managing Director and Vice President. “Go Daddy offers a one-stop shop for small businesses and consumers who are looking to grow their busi-
nesses on the Internet. The company offers domain names for Rs 199 per annum and web hosting plans for Rs 99 a month,” he added. “Mithunda was the perfect choice for this commercial. His appeal spans across generations. Apart from his mass appeal, he is a self made man like the small and medium business men,” said Sodhi. The two commercials showcase two different small business owners – a young girl who is the owner of a bakery owner and a middle aged leather shop owner. While there are no customers to cater to in the bakery shop, the leather shop owner seems tired of low business. The TV commercials feature Mithun explaining to the business owners how find a solution to their problems by first getting a website. The commercials ends with Mithun doing a dance move along with the shop owners whose businesses are now thriving.

‘Ragini MMS-2’ has an entirely new concept’ I

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2014
By Rajesh V. Gaur & Suneel V. Gaur
Bhushan Patel is a Bollywood film director, who has directed the horror film '1920: Evil Returns' and is now directing another horror movie 'Ragini MMS 2' for producer Ekta Kapoor, starring Sunny Leone. Patel started his career as an assistant cameraman to veteran DOP Pravin Bhatt. The ace lensman talks to Sandeep Hattangadi about his new film. Is 'Ragini MMS-2' concurrent to its first part? Not really. It's an entirely new concept. The only similar thing is the house in which the earlier film was set. A group of filmmakers led by its director, played by Parveen Dabaas, go to the same house to shoot a film and eerie things happen to them.
Is it inspired by any Hollywood film like 'Paranormal Activity' or 'The Blair Witch Project'? No. The first part was inspired but my theme for this film is entirely new for Indian audiences. How did you get Sunny Leone for your project? It was entirely the producer, Ekta Kapoor madam whose idea was to cast her and Sunny has done a wonderful job. Ekta was the driving force behind this entire film and I
am thankful to her for giving me an opportunity to direct this film.
How did you feel while working with her? Initially I was a bit apprehensive and heard stories about her but she was totally focused, co-operative and professional with us. Reportedly, the film has some steamy scenes with Sunny and Sandhya Mridul. Yes. But they were apprised about these scenes before they signed the film and all the scenes were aesthetically shot. What next? I am doing a thriller for Sanjay Gupta and some TV projects too.
ts time for twin celebration for Kangana Ranaut. Kangana celebrates her 28th birthday on March 23 and her performance in the recently released 'Queen' is winning her rave reviews and accolades. It has been eight years since Kangana Ranaut made her dream debut with Anurag Basu's 'Gangster' in 2006. She has high self-esteem, is sensitive and bold, and has carried herself entirely on her own shoulders. Despite many obstacles in her career, she has carved a niche in Bollywood without having a godfather in the industry. She says her days of struggle are behind her now. "My jour-
ney has been great. It is a mix of struggle and appreciation. But it is only now that I can say I am enjoying my work. Initially, there was lot of struggle but now I am getting the kind of roles that I want to do. I now have a say," Kangana told us recently during the promotion of 'Queen'. The actress said, "Strug-

t’s a h u g e honour for me to play the title role in my Bollywood debut that too with eminent Nagesh sir (Kukunoor) as the director,” smiles the dainty Monali who has also sung a backdrop number in the movie. Considering that it was a harsh, taboo subject, wasn’t she apprehensive ? “On the contrary ‘Lakshmi’ being an inspirational film, was a creative challenge for me. Consciously, we
decided not to meet the girl who in real-life had undergone the traumatic agony without any reference points or without observing the goings-on in a real red-light area. I had to behave in the latter portions like a minor sex worker wearing garish, loud make-up. It was scary for me to even glance into the mirror between the shots. In the initial portions I am in my ‘true colours’ minus any make-up. In fact, I had to put on 6 to 8 kg of weight to add on the chubby flab of a 14-year old. My sensitive portrayal is actually an
amalgam of various wronged minor ‘survivor’ girls, amidst authentic ambience. Eventually, the Censors proved to be extremely supportive of our venture,” she shrugs. The actress is all praise for her acting-mentor Kukunoor who doted on her all through the filming. “Director Nagesh sir also plays the obnoxious, sadistic pimp ‘Chinna’. After almost every ‘nasty’ shot, he would fondly address me as ‘maa’ (southside lingo meaning dear) and diligently check if I was okay,” she says with a gleam in her eloquent eyes.
gle for me was not a shortage of films but not getting the right kind of films. After 'Gangster' I was being typecast, be it 'Life in a... Metro', 'Fashion' or others. "So, I actually had to put my foot down and say 'No I am not going to take more of this'. I almost had to stay out of work for some time to change the course of the image I was getting into, without wanting it. I always felt that I had much more to give than just doing the same crazy, over the top characters and dramatic roles," said the Nationalaward-winning actress. And it worked. Kangana went on to star in films like 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbai' and 'Tanu Weds Manu' in which her 'quirky-chirpy' act was appreciated by the audience and critics alike. During this time Kangana was part of some inconsequential films like 'Tezz', 'Rascals' and 'Double Dhamaal' among others. "I do not regret being part of such films. A lot of actors say that if they do not get
good offers they prefer to sit at home, I don't have any such philosophy. I cannot sit at home without work," she said. Was there ever a time when the talented actress had lost hope of achieving her goals. Kangana says she is not fussy about working in big banner films but would rather do meaty roles in smaller ones. "From my experience I have seen that one should do films that gives satisfaction and not just run after something. My biggest film till date 'Game' was the biggest flop and a practically smaller film 'Tanu Weds Manu' went on to be a success," she said. Her performance in 'Queen' has been appreciated and she now awaits her next film 'Revolver Rani'. "I am really excited about next year. I have a few films lined up for release and all roles are very different from each other. I am a very spontaneous person and will just go with the flow," she said.
Not many choices in industry when you grow old: Amitabh N
EW DELHI: Amitabh Bachchan may be one of the busiest actors in Hindi film industry but the megastar says he is not particularly choosy about his roles as there are not many choices left for him at this age. "In this industry as you grow older you do not have many choices... You just take what comes your way... Which is not very often. I guess there is always a senior citizen to be enacted in young filmmakers' scripts, and so they ask," the 71-year-old Bachchan told PTI in an email interview. Bachchan would be next seen in horror comedy drama 'Bhoothnath Returns'. "I liked the concept of 'Bhoothnath Returns', and I had worked with Nitesh Tiwari (director) earlier on the promotions of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'," he said. The 'Sholay' star was often seen riding an automatic scooter with the kids. He also shot a party song with rapper Honey Singh. "That scooter or cycle has been with me for years and has been used often enough... Even on sets," said Bachchan. The actor says his grandchildren are excited about his upcoming project. 'Bhoothnath Returns' will hit the screens on April 11 during the Lok Sabha elections but Bachchan is unperturbed by what will happen at the box-office. "We shall find out soon enough. Not one producer director the world over has ever been able to predict the fate of a film on release. 'Hum toh bahut chote log hain!' (We are very small)," he said.

Revealing about the sudden change in dates, director Anees Bazmee stated that releasing the film on this date will ensure audience presence as the Christmas week has always been beneficial for films. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala is excited about it since he believes Christmas will be lucky for the film as the prequel ‘Welcome’ too released during this festival. While the sequel ‘Welcome Back’ will retain its earlier cast like Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal, the new addition includes the leads, John Abraham and Shruti Haasan.

If Juhi Chawla gets nominated for her villainous role in Gulaab Gang, she will one of the few actresses to be in the running for the Negative Performance category. And talking of awards, next year it’s going to be a tough
fight for the Best Actress trophy. Not even three months and so many super roles for women. It seems the nation wants to know when Aishwarya Rai will sign a film, if Vidya Balan is really pregnant and if Rakhi Sawant will manage to get a ticket and win an election. The nation might also want to follow the electoral battle between Kirron Kher and Gul Panag, and some people might pause in their celebgazing to wonder why celebrities (even minor ones) are the last resort for political parties. Why do film stars deny things when the media reveals them and a few days later they get confirmed anyway? Don’t they feel foolish? Apparently, a Bollywood actor is line to buy a Dubai island for a mind-boggling sum of money. But ask them to help a good cause and the excuse is that the industry is going through a bad time. By the way, when is the industry not going through a bad time? Every few months there are pronouncements of doom, but you wouldn’t guess from the stars’ and producers’ lavish lifestyles.

Deepika to star in ‘Shuddhi’? A
fter Hrithik Roshan officially released a statement regarding him opting out of one of Dharma’s most ambitious project titled ‘Shuddhi’, Kareena too
went public about exiting the film, much to the audience’s disappointment. However, since then, ‘Shuddhi’ has been on the back burner though Karan Johar had claimed that the film is sure to go on floors soon with a new cast. And now recently, we hear that it is Deepika Padukone who will fill in the shoes of Kareena Kapoor. But this is not the first time that the actress has stepped in as a replacement. Prior to this, Deepika was signed in for ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela RamLeela’ after Kareena refused to play Leela in this Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. As far as the male lead is concerned, no names have been finalised as yet.
Anurag to re-shoot portions of ‘Jagga Jasoos’? P
ost the success of their much-acclaimed film ‘Barfi!’, Anurag Basu and Ranbir Kapoor are all set to enthrall the audience, once again, with ‘Jagga Jasoos’. Team ‘Jagga Jasoos’ has already wrapped up the first schedule of the film but we have heard that after watching the canned scenes, Anurag felt that there was still some room for improvement and therefore, now he wants to re-shoot some of its portions. Sources claim that the
Akshay to enjoy back to back releases—’Holiday’ and ‘Fugly’
W
ith ‘Action Jackson’ apparently moving ahead, the stage is set for Akshay Kumar to have the first half of the month of June entirely his own. While his ‘Holiday’ would now see a solo release on June 6 sans any competition, the very next week his ‘Fugly’ would hit the screens as well. As a cherry on the top, this film too would be a solo arrival, hence making it an uninterrupted run for Akshay Kumar films. With him being a producer on both the films, it helps ‘Holiday’ as well as ‘Fugly’ tremendously. First and foremost, the screens on which the two films would be run can be controlled internally. Moreover, the entire campaign around the promotion can be smartly designed so as to accommodate both the films. What makes the two releases further special is the fact that they are totally different from each other, which ensures that they don’t cut into each other’s market. While ‘Holiday’ is an out and out mass affair with A.R. Murugadoss as a director and Vipul Shah joining Akshay as a producer, ‘Fugly’ comes from Akshay’s other production house, Grazing Goat which is making a name in concept based outings, as was the case with ‘OMG - Oh My God’ and Marathi outing ‘72 Miles - Ek Pravas’.
reshoot will not hamper the upcoming schedule of the film and Anurag will accommodate the changes in the film’s second schedule, without extending it. However, Rucha Pathak, Senior Creative Director of Disney UTV, the producers of the film, has rubbished the rumours and has stated that they are happy with way the film has been shot, thus far.
Varun lap dances with Nargis Fakhri V
arun Dhawan, who’ll be seen romancing Nargis Fakhri, in David Dhawan’s upcoming film ‘Main Tera Hero’, gave an impromptu lap dance to his leading lady during the film’s promotion in Chandigarh. The sizzling duo launched the third song of their film, Shanivaar Raat at a mall and a college in Chandigarh and Varun not only wooed the audience with his brilliant dance moves, but he also entertained the college students by giving Nargis a lap dance. Produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, ‘Main Tera Hero’ also stars Ileana D’Cruz.

M
Afridi's last-over exploits wouldn't play on the Indian cricketers' minds ahead of the game although the format is completely different. There would be immense pressure on both sides and one can expect a full house at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium as people are going crazy for the tickets of the match. For Dhoni, there are a number of issues that he needs to fret upon although yesterday's England game was an indication as to what kind of line-up he is planning to field today. There are still some concerns with both batting and bowling. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan's performance in shorter versions hasn't been good enough but the skipper is not known to tinker too much with his side. Also the fact that Ajinkya Rahane, who can be an option as an opener having done the job for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, is also not inspiring confidence of the highest order. While critics have panned Dhoni
for not being flexible with his team selection, he did try something 'Out of the Box' during the last edition in Sri Lanka where Irfan Pathan came in as an opener. His run-a-ball 31 was one of the primary reasons that India lost to Australia and were subsequently knocked out of the tournament. Dhoni has never really experimented big time after that. A good start is always crucial as it helps to seize the initiative early on in the match. Both Rohit and Dhawan would be aware that a couple of defeats could mean end of the road for India in this edition. The relief for the skipper would be his mainstay Virat Kohli's form. The team's No 1 batsman looked in great touch against England as he smashed an unbeaten 73 off only 47 balls. Dhoni's trusted lieutenant Suresh Raina is also showing signs of getting back his touch which had deserted him for the better part of the last season.
Bowling is an area of concern compared to batting: Dhoni M
IRPUR: Underlining his bowling concerns, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said they need to bowl well at the death and hoped that batsmen would give the bowlers more than the par score on board. "Bowling is an area of concern compared to batting. Getting off to a good start is important as it will help us get 10 to 15 runs more than the par-score. Our aim will be to do well in death bowling and also bat well and we will have a good chance (in the tournament)," Dhoni said He said the likes Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar have not played a lot of T20 Internationals but the IPL experience will certainly come in handy for them. "Agreed they haven't played a lot of T20 International cricket but the experi-
ence in IPL will help them a lot. We would want the bowlers to get one or two wickets with the new ball, their job will be much easier," Dhoni said. While he was happy about Yuvraj
Singh and Suresh Raina’s performance, he was non-committal on sending Ajinkya Rahane up the order. "Overall, we have achieved a lot during the two practice games. The idea was to give the guys some fair time in the middle. Yuvi and Raina contributed in bowling." About Rahane opening, he said, "That's under consideration. You will have to wait and watch." The skipper agreed that presence of a few genuine all-rounders in the Pakistan team would help the rivals. "Playing proper all-rounders always adds to the strength of a side. If you have players who are equally capable with bat and ball, one can play more than five bowlers and still have the same batting strength," the Indian captain opined. Among the rival bowlers, pacer
Umar Gul and wily spinner Saeed Ajmal came in for special praise from the Indian captain. "Umar Gul is a fantastic bowler. I remember during the 2007 ICC World T20, he would be introduced in the 11th or 12th over and bowl till the end. Having said that, they have other fast bowlers also, who are equally dangerous." Dhoni conceded that it is difficult to score freely against mystery spinner Saeed Ajmal. "Ajmal is a bowler against whom you can never score freely. It's also the manner how they have used him (Ajmal) to stop batsmen from scoring runs in the slog overs. They gave him an over in the first six (Powerplay) and then couple of overs in the middle. If you see on an average, all countries have had difficulties in facing Ajmal,"
29 Dhoni’s return augurs well for India: Misbah
KARACHI: Pakistan's Test and ODI captain Misbah-ul-Haq has warned his teammates to be wary of traditional rivals India, who he feels will be a different side after the return of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "Dhoni is a big stabilising force for India and his return means that Pakistan will have to work much harder to get that win over India tomorrow," he told reporters in Lahore. India and Pakistan will lock horns in a marquee clash of the ICC World Twenty20 in Mirpur today. Misbah said it will be a completely new game tomorrow irrespective of the fact that Pakistan had defeated India in the Asia Cup recently. "I wouldn't read much into India's results in the Asia Cup because T20 is a different format and requires a different approach. Dhoni's return is a big boost for them as he has lot of experience and has led them wisely. He knows how to get the best out of his players," he said. Misbah pointed out that Dhoni himself is a terrific T20 cricketer. "I think Pakistan will need to focus a lot more on team work than individual performances to beat India after Dhoni's return. The good thing is that the conditions in Bangladesh are good for the Pakistani batsmen and they should be comfortable batting first or even chasing," he added.

HANTY MANSIYSK (RUSSIA): Placed comfortably on top of the table with a half point lead, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will enter the crucial phase of the Candidates chess tournament, taking on Peter Svidler after the second rest day here. From a great beginning to some cautious play, Anand, with four points in his bag from six games, enjoys a half point lead over nearest contender Levon Aronian of Armenia. It's a closely matched field as almost everyone except the lowest seed Dmitry Andreikin of Russia seems to be in the race for the challenger of the next world championship match against Magnus Carlsen to be played later this year. The eight-player double round-robin tournament has seen a lot of excitement and there are no clear favourites as yet but surely Anand has an edge thanks to his half point cushion. The stakes are high as apart from a match against Carlsen, the winner will take home 135000 Euros (a little over Rs one crore) as cash prize. The Russian duo of Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Svidler, Bulgarian Veselin Topalov and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan follow Aronian a half point behind on three points apiece and they all have reasons to fancy their chances as the tour-
Anand. In the fourth round Kramnik played the Vienna variation wherein the Indian would fancy his chances on another day. The Russian showed better preparation and got an easy draw. Andreikin struggled a little in the fifth round but did not face many difficulties before drawing with the Indian and then in the previous round, Sergey Karjakin again suffered just momentarily before steering himself to safety. If the first three games showed Anand in great spirits, the last three have dampened them a little. And the next two games will be most crucial as Anand first meets Svidler with black and then has another black game lined up against Aronian in the eighth round. Should he come out unscathed in the next two, Anand will become a huge favourite for title here. After an insipid start that involved four draws and a loss, Topalov came back with a bang scoring over Kramnik in the previous round. ARIS: Robin van Persie scored a sensational hat-trick as Manchester United beat Olympiakos 3-0 to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals, while Borussia Dortmund joined them in the last eight. Under-pressure United manager David Moyes saw his side produce a much-improved performance from Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool, and Van Persie made the difference as the ailing Premier League champions overcame a 2-0 first-leg deficit to go through. There was less drama in Germany, where last season’s beaten finalists Dortmund lost 2-1 at home to Zenit St Petersburg but progressed 5-4 on aggregate. United had only previously come back from a first-leg defeat to win a Champions

League tie once before, against Roma in the 2007 quarter-finals, and the listless nature of their recent displays would have done little to inspire confidence among the home fans at Old Trafford. However, a Wayne Rooney header that came back off the post set the tone before the three-time European champions were awarded a penalty midway through the first half when Jose Holebas barged into the back of Van Persie. The Dutchman confidently beat Roberto

from the spot, and the Spanish goalkeeper then did well to save from a Patrice Evra header. Olympiakos, who retained the Greek title at the weekend, remained a threat and United goalkeeper David de Gea made a brilliant double save to deny David Fuster and Chori Dominguez as half-time approached. But United levelled the tie on aggregate in first-half stoppage time when Rooney’s low cross was lashed home first-time by Van Persie, and he then scored the decisive third goal,
and completed his hat-trick, by curling home a free-kick in the 52nd minute. Moyes will be delighted that his side held on, although there were plenty of nerves, and Evra picked up a yellow card that rules him out of the first leg of their quarter-final while Van Persie went off with an injury late on. “The way the players responded after Sunday’s defeat pleased me. I said to them on Monday morning we had to win 3-0 and give the crowd something back,” Moyes told British Sky television at full-time.
