contractor Nilesh Yadav and corporator Ashraf Azmi. At the heart of the “vendetta” is the fact that Rai has, in the course of his activism against encroachment, run up against some of the forementioned people. The alleged molestation was reported on August 19,

but through a detailed timeline, AAP says it is possible to prove with witnesses that Dindayal was framed by the policemen in question. From 11 am to 3 pm, he was in the Sessions Court as a panch in some cases. At around 1 pm, Continued on pg 5 «

he state government had six months ago asked the Union Government to ban right wing Hindu organizations of Sanatan Sanstha and Abhinav Bharat for their alleged inflammatory speeches and writings, stated Minister for Home R.R. Brand-ashing some class!

WE have heard of brand ambassadors promoting cars and suits and in some cases even state tourism. It’s all a part of the marketing genre. But this stylistic criterion has spilled over into a new segment. Real estate developers have seen the value positioning that a brand ambassador can bring to their coffers. As a first, Mumbai’s luxury housing top dog, the Lodha group, has roped in Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, to be positioned as future resident and brand ambassador for their super luxury district called ‘The Park’ located at Worli. This is where the group plans to develop a variety of projects ranging from high rises, town houses, luxury retail and even a few select bungalows. And here is what our pretty Aishwarya had to say, when quizzed by the paparazzi on her choice of product. “Lodha Group is the leading real estate firm in India and known for their good work, elegance and best design internationally. I am delighted to be associated with them on this new and innovative project”. Said like a true ambassador, with never a word wrong! Delighted as she was, it was very evident that Abhishek Lodha, MD of the group, was even more delighted as he tremulously escorted the beauteous Mrs. Bachchan to the dais, there to address the pack of

This way m’lady! Abhishek Lodha, MD, Lodha Group escorting future resident and brand ambassador Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to the launch of the ‘Park’ luxury project in Worli earlier this week.

photographers for whom her name is like a siren call. Nor did she disappoint and for everyone it seemed a win-win evening. Naturally, the brand ambassador of a project would want to be associated closely with it and how

Franz out Kafka-ed LIKE many of us, a colleague has had trouble getting his Aadhaar card. He had applied two years ago and waited and waited and waited. Several times he went online to check the status, and each time he was urged to ‘check in two or three days’. Finally, fed up, he just applied again. Within three months, he was delighted to get an e-letter, telling him he would be getting his Aaadhaar card shortly. That’s where the problem began. There was no one home to receive it from Monday to Saturday. Sundays, as we all know, the postman never calls. So with hope in his heart and courage in his heart, he thought he would track down the postman at least, to ask him whether he had come and gone back with his card. Since this colleague lives in Thane, he went to the Thane Post Office (Head Office) Opposite the Civil Hospital. He was sure that someone would at least point him in the wrong direction. He went yesterday. The place is disorganised, buzzing with people, and everyone is too busy to even look up, never mind talk to you. He went to another huge room at the back of the main hall. Same story!

Finally he mustered up enough courage to speak, insistently enough so that the busy postal worker at least looked up. It was not a friendly encounter. Where do the Aadhaar cards go when the postman has been unable to deliver them, our colleague asked. The postal worker, very busy, looked at him with contempt. “You have to ask the postman”, he said. That’s the problem, my colleague informed him; “I never get to meet him so I thought I would find out whether there was any information here”. But he might as well have held his breath. The man had already resumed work and ignored him. Another man, equally busy at the next table, butted in. “You have to contact your postman and your own post office”, he said. I live in Saket, our colleague said, can you tell me where the post office is? But of course that was expecting too much and our second postal worker, weighed down by the burdens of a world that has to be reminded that letters still exist as a means of communication, was completely lost to communication. So it’s back to Google to find out where the local post office is and then

much closer can you get than the lady, who now we hear has an apartment in the complex. Who knows, she might even live there occasionally, and what a fillip that would be for other buyers! And for those who want more

gyan on the Park Project, here it is: Spread across a 17 acre property, the project is “designed as a tribute to nature with seven acres of world class landscapes set on top of a 70 feet tall ‘hill’ at Worli”. The rest of the prose is

distinctly purple so we will not reproduce. Nor is it cheap, at Rs.30,000 to Rs.66,000 per square foot. At least for one segment of industry, it would seem that the economy is looking up.

perhaps the postman will be found and then perhaps the elusive Aadhaar card will materialise.

Movietime!

TWO movies that we are (sort of) planning to see in the coming week. One of Ashton Kutcher in ‘Jobs’ where he has reportedly done a tremendous job of portraying the late founder of Apple. The other is (surprise surprise from someone who sees one Bollywood offering every three years) is ‘Madras Café’ starring John Abraham, but not, we hear, as Prabhakaran. He’s playing an undercover agent and of course he will get his man or woman. There is another film on the horizon that we are excited about. This is ‘The Coffin Maker’ and it has been in the making for a couple of years though it is now reportedly complete. Naseeruddin, who is our absolutely favourite actor (no rivals), is Anton Gomes of the eponymous title and the film is set in a small Goan village, which is itself sufficient reason to go and see it. There’s also Randeep Hooda, if you want a bit of beefcake. No release date yet, but we are waiting.

First look at the poster for The Coffin Maker, and no, there’s no release date yet.

Rai went straight to the police station and filed an NC about the fact that his wife and mother had been threatened. He demanded that he be given a police escort in

view of the threats that were made. Raut reportedly refused to meet him but he sent two constables to accompany him home. He reached around 4.30 pm and immediately, the two constables went to Shyamsunder Sharma’s home. They returned shortly after, saying only Sharma’s two daughters were there, so Rai went back to the police station, again accompanied by the two constables, without visiting Sharma’s house, by 5 pm, where he informed the duty officer that the culprits in the mob had not been found. After returning home and eating, Rai went to meet one Arun Gholap with four other AAP volunteers, to discuss some issue, after which by 6pm, they went to meet ACP Landge at Kurla, to apprise him of the problem with Sharma. They were with the officer till 8 pm, and went back to the police station at his instruction, to meet Raut,

whom he also called. He was accompanied by two AAP volunteers. From 8.30 pm to 10 pm, Rai was kept waiting in the police station and then he was told he was arrested under Section 354, dealing with assault of a sexual nature, harassment of a woman etc. When he asked to meet Raut or Shivale, he was told they had gone home. A little later, they transferred him from Vinoba Bhave police station to Kurla police station. The next day he was given bail. AAP says another reason why the police are against Rai is because he got a policemen trapped by the ACB as he was accepting a bribe from someone a couple of months ago. Letters have been sent in this regard to DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni, Adlitional C P (Central region) Praveen Salunkhe and JT CP (law and order) Sadanand Date.

Missing security supervisor found dead By Zuber Ansari

A

38-year-old security agency supervisor who was missing for almost a week was found dead under mysterious circumstances near the Agarwal Compound at Chincholi Bunder in Malad (West) on Wednesday morning. The body of the deceased, identified as Vikram Singh, was decomposed beyond recognition and was identi-

fied by his family members on the basis of a steel ‘kada’ on his hand. Singh went missing on August 14. When his wife found his cell phone switched off and saw no sign of him the following day, she filed a missing complaint at the Malad police station. According to sources, Singh Vikram Singh, the deceased was last seen inside the security guard’s cabin in Agarwal guard of Agarwal Compound who worked under Singh’s Compound. According to Police Inspector Chandrakant Gurav from the Malad police station Singh was not only a security supervisor but was also dealing in real estate. “When we raided Agarwal Compound where Singh was last seen, we recovered some alcohol bottles, blue film CDs and other material. We later found out that he was with a woman called Baby Yadav, who is also missing after the incident,” said Gurav. “When we recovered his body we were not sure of his identity because of the extent of the decomposition. We asked his family members to come in with his photograph and identify him if possible. They confirmed the body was Singh’s on the basis of a steel kada on his right hand,” Gurav added. Sources from the Malad police station have revealed that Baby Yadav, who was last seen with Singh, might be involved in his death, but further confirmation is awaited. Singh’s family, however, alleges that the Malad police have shown no interest in the case due to which Singh was found dead. They claim that after registering the missing complaint on August 14, they received no satisfactory answer. “We have sent the body to Bhagwati Hospital for a medical report. Once we know the cause of death and on the basis of the information gathered so far, we will investigate further,” said Gurav.

O

bserving that probe in the IPL betting scandal was at a premature stage, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday refused to grant relief to two bookies from Jaipur, accused to have been in touch with actor Vindoo Dara Singh and Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf for placing bets, reports PTI. A division bench of Justices S.C. Dharmadhikari and S.B. Shukre was hearing a petition filed by brothers Pawan and Sanjay Jaipur seeking quashing of the FIR registered against them and a direction to the police to not take any coercive steps against them. The duo had earlier filed anticipatory bail petitions in the High Court. Justice Sadhana Jadhav is likely to pass order on the plea on August 23 but had earlier suggested that she was

inclined to reject it. "Investigation is still on. At this stage we are not inclined to grant relief. If tomorrow the police does not find any material against you then they may file appropriate report," Justice Dharmadhikari observed. Following this remark, the brothers sought to withdraw their petition which was allowed. Additional public prosecutor Aruna Kamat Pai argued that there was ample material against the two petitioners not only for betting and gambling but in entire conspiracy. According to the crime branch, the Jaipur brothers had procured SIM cards through forged documents which were later used to place bets through Vindoo Dara Singh. The police also alleged that the duo were in touch with Asad Rauf.

According to investigating officials, an FIR was filed against Raiba, who was posted at unit 4 of the local arms division in Marol, after his wife registered a complaint at Karad police station, which was later transferred to the Bhayandar police. The complainant alleged that

Raiba would come home in an inebriated state and sexually assault her and her daughters. “He not only demanded dowry but also accused me of adultery and said that the younger girl was begotten through an illicit affair. His main grudge was that I had failed to deliver a male child, ” stated the wife, who has now moved to her native village in Karad. “The accused has been arrested and charged under sections 498 (A), 292, 354, 509 and 323, of the IPC, and other relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, “ said API Laxman Jhirange who is investigating the case.

In his death, Dr Dabholkar’s Bill... Continued from pg 1 « Black Magic Act, 2011”. The subject was broached at the weekly cabinet meeting held yesterday by Minister for Home R R Patil who briefed his colleagues about the pent up anger in the state following the murder of Dr Narendra Dabholkar. He favored the government promulgating the ordinance with immediate effect to pacify public sentiments. Speaking to newspersons, state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis clarified that his party was not opposed to eradication of inhuman practices and superstition, but the legislation in its current form is incomplete, that in its current form, it was limited to the Hindu religion and did not cover practices in other religions. Sources disclosed that the proposed ordinance will be promulgated today after seeking assent of Governor K Sankaranarayanan. After the ordinance is promulgated, it has a life of six weeks following which the government will have to introduce the bill in the ensuing Winter session of the state legislature to get the act passed that will give it legislative status. As per the provisions of the proposed ordinance, the state seeks to ban human

sacrifices and other inhuman, evil and aghori practices and black magic. The word “propagate” covers issuance or publication of advertisement, literature, article or book relating to or about human sacrifices and other inhuman, evil and aghori practices and black magic. It also includes any form of direct or indirect help, abatement, participation or cooperation with regard to the same. The offences so committed will attract the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1973, which will include punishment with imprisonment for a term of six months which may be extended to seven years and a fine which shall not be less than Rs 5,000 and may be extended to Rs 50,000. The ordinance seeks to ban acts like tying up a person with rope and assaulting him with a stick or whip to expel the ghost, drink footwear soaked water, doing so-called miracles and earning money by deceiving and terrorizing people, claiming to receive blessings of supernatural powers, doing black magic in search of precious things, making human sacrifices or creating panic by way of invoking ghosts or mantras and putting up a false show of curing people of infections.

n what is being seen as a special package for Mira Bhayandar, Deputy Chief Minister, Ajit Pawar, on Tuesday, not only cleared hurdles for various pending projects, but also gave an in-principle nod for new schemes to boost infrastructure of the twin-city. This followed after a delegation from Mira-Bhayandar, led by NCP legislator Gilbert Mendonca, met with Pawar at his office in the Mantralaya, on Tuesday. Issues which met with a positive response following detailed discussions include (1) Accommodating residents of rickety building in flats built by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) under its rental housing scheme; (2) Converting the underconstruction 200-bed municipal hospital into a civil hospital; (3) Incorporating an additional 100 MLD water with existing quota of the ambi-

Throwing light on details of some of the issues Mendonca said, “The population of the twin-city is growing rapidly, although a significant quantity of water has been allotted to the MBMC, this quantum will be insufficient in the long term. Hence, in an attempt to

chalk-out a permanent solution, we had demanded an additional supply of 100 MLD which will now be incorporated in the allotted quota. And with the minister ensuring inclusion of the twin-city in MMRDA’s Taloja WTP project, the alarming problem of garbage dumping is all set to be resolved.” Apprising Pawar about the need for a government hospital in the extended suburbs beyond Dahisar, Mayor Catlin Pereira sought converSushil Kadam | ADC

Is ban on VHP’s Ayodhya yatra justified? T

HE yatra to Ayodhya announced by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) does not seem to be a religious move. Amit Shah, Gujarat CM Narendra Modi’s right-hand man, has been put in charge of Uttar Pradesh 2014 poll campaign. He is known to be a strong believer in Hindutva. There is a clear indication that the Ayodhya issue is once again being exploited by the BJP. The pertinent question is whether the ban on the yatra announced by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav justified and legal? The UP chief minister has said that this yatra will lead to communal tension. Is there a basis for such a conclusion? It is fact that raking up Ayodhya issue can create an explosive communal situation. There is little doubt that the yatra strategy has been planned by the Sangh Parivar. The yatra is not as harmless as the BJP would like to make out. It looks like the UP chief minister has seen now whether the Election Commission (EC) will approve the ban. The matter is going to come before the EC and it is to be seen whether the ban which is a preventive measure, is in accordance with poll rules. One thing is certain: Uttar Pradesh chief minister can expect the Centre to give him full support: the Congress spokesperson have already stated that the yatra by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad is a communal move and likely to cause polarisation and violent situation. With Narendra Modi as the chairman of BJP’s poll committee, it will not be a surprise if the declaration in the party manifesto of growth and governance is replaced by Hindutva.

AJIV GANDHI’s birth anniversary brought back a flood of memories for me this year. And, not because of the full page advertisements you would have seen in your newspapers from sycophantic ministers who used public money to commemorate the day. We are a docile people so nobody questions how government departments that claim to have no money for important things can afford advertisements that cost crores of rupees. Nobody questions either how taxpayers money can be so casually spent on welfare programmes that bear the name of one or other member of the NehruGandhi dynasty. There appears to be a new ‘welfare’ programme every other minute these days so on this anniversary I discovered, through one of those expensive advertisements, the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) that promises ‘urban poor’ subsidized credit for housing through the Rajiv Rin Yojana.

Madhu and the industrialist, Sunil Mittal. We could have been at one of those parties that always find their way on to page 3. But, our conversations about media and politics came to a quick end when Rajat appeared with the impossibly handsome John Abraham by his side, and the star apologized for being late. He too had been stuck in a traffic jam. He said he hoped that we would enjoy the film and warned us not to expect any ‘item songs’. From the very first few moments of the film it became clear that it was about the events that led to the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. Political thrillers are not a genre that Bollywood likes much, so no more than a handful

of how these officials interfered in Sri Lanka’s Tamil problems by patronizing groups like the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam). I remembered the days when I personally met Pirabhakaran and other Tamil militants in their suites in Delhi’s Ashoka Hotel when Rajiv was prime minister. Rajiv was a novice in the world of politics and was more than a little lost when it came to foreign policy so he relied on the advice he was given by trusted officials. It was on their advice that he swung from being a supporter of the Tamil militancy to sending an army to destroy the LTTE. The soldiers he sent were forced to fight with their hands tied behind their backs because they were meant to be a ‘peace keeping force’ so more than 1500 brave Indians lost their lives in a war that was confused, reckless and unwinnable. That was the real reason why Rajiv Gandhi ended up paying with his own life.

Rajiv Gandhi

Cynical reality

What brought back memories of Rajiv Gandhi for me last week was a new film called Madras Café to whose premiere in Delhi I was invited by my old friend, Rajat Sharma. It rained so hard that day that the roads of the city were clogged with bumper-to-bumper traffic jams in one of which I was caught for 45 minutes by a strange irony in the stretch of heavily guarded tarmac that goes past the Prime Minister’s residence. In the days when Rajiv Gandhi lived there, I found myself reminiscing, you could drive through Race Course Road. Today it has been turned into a barricaded enclave that is impassable for those who do not have an appointment with the Prime Minister. I also found myself recalling those long ago days when Rajiv Gandhi would drive himself to Delhi dinner parties in his white ambassador car with his wife beside him. This was before he became prime minister and before the assassination of Indira Gandhi created stringent new security rules. By the time I got to the Director’s Cut cinema in Vasant Kunj I was more than an hour late but so was the star of the movie, John Abraham, so the film had not yet begun. There was time for chit-chat with the Delhi glitterati that Rajat had invited for the show. In the dim light of the cinema I spotted Shashi Tharoor and his lovely wife, Sunanda, Dr. Naresh Trehan and his journalist wife,

This is not the story that Madras Café tells. It chooses instead to blame shadowy Western countries for trying to take over Sri Lanka for their own military and commercial interests and with the specific objective of weakening India. The truth is that India began its interference in Sri Lanka’s affairs from the time of Indira Gandhi. This happened because she disapproved of J. Jayewardene’s efforts to make economic policies that would have made Sri Lanka into a South Asian Singapore. It was as part of these efforts that Jayewardene invited Western investment long before India got the same idea. Long before the Cold War ended, long before India realized that the Soviet Union would lose not just this war but the war of economic ideas as well. India interfered in Sir Lanka’s domestic affairs in much the same way that Pakistan’s jihadi groups are being used to interfere in India’s domestic affairs today. And, it was because of this cynical meddling that Rajiv Gandhi ended up losing his life. It is a sadder and more cynical story than Madras Café tells but, perhaps, it is not yet time for Bollywood to tell the real stories of betrayal and ugliness that lie buried in the secret chambers of Delhi’s sandstone edifices. To end on a happier note may I say that John Abraham is outstanding in the film and much better looking in real life than he is onscreen.

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh of political films have emerged from the largest film industry in the world. This film is a reminder of the vacuum that waits to be filled. It tells quite competently the story of the Tamil struggle for a separate homeland in Sri Lanka and there are some unnervingly realistic images of the jungles in which the Tamil Tigers once had their underground headquarters. The man who plays Vellupillai Pirabhakaran’s character plays the role so well that I found myself forgetting that this was only a movie. What saddened me was that the film, in fictionalizing important historical events, failed to tell a story that would have been more compelling had it been historically accurate. It hints at how Rajiv Gandhi was betrayed by Indian officials who should have been more aware of the dangers his life was in on account of the Sri Lanka policy they made him follow. A little more research would have revealed just how serious the betrayal was and

Love can flow only between two freedoms I

F you love a person, how can you destroy his or her freedom? If you trust a person, you trust her or his freedom too. One day it happened that a man came to me who was really in a mess, very miserable. And he said, “I will commit suicide.” I said, “Why?” He said, “I trusted my wife and she has betrayed me. I had trusted her absolutely and she has been in love with some other man. And I never came to know about it until just now! I have got hold of a few letters. So then I inquired, and then I insisted, and now she has confessed that she has been in love all the time. I will commit suicide,” he said. I said, “You say you trusted her?” He said, “Yes, I trusted her and she betrayed me.” What do you mean by trust? — some wrong notion about trust; trust also seems to be political. “You trusted her so that she would not betray you. Your trust was a trick. Now you want to make her feel guilty. This is not trust.” He was very puzzled. He said, “What do you mean by trust then, if this is not trust? I trusted her unconditionally.” I said, “If I were in your place, trust would mean to me that I trust her freedom, and I trust her intelligence, and I trust her loving capacity. If she falls in love with somebody else,

It is possible with me: I am not concerned with the trivia of your life. You are here basically to listen and understand. I was talking to a friend yesterday. There is a conflict between him and his wife. As is natural, he thought if he had married another woman there would not have been this state of affairs. Now this man has no experience of another woman. She exists only in imagination. The wife also feels the same way. She feels she has made a wrong choice. Another been betrayed? My understanding of trust is man would have made a better husband. In that it cannot be betrayed. By its very nature, this case also, there is no experience of the by its very definition, trust cannot be be- other man. He is purely imaginary, therefore, trayed. It is impossible to betray trust. If trust the illusion persists. I told my friend, "It is not a question of this can be betrayed, then it is not trust. I have seen couples who have lived together woman or that woman. It is a question of your for thirty or forty years; still, they seem to be as different natures. There is conflict in your disimmature as they were on their first day to- positions. And it is the arrangement between gether. Still the same complaint: “She doesn't a man and a woman that society has preunderstand what I am saying.” Forty years scribed that is to be blamed for this, for it is an being together and you have not been able to arrangement of ownership. And if she finds that she would like to move into love with somebody else, it is perfectly okay. Even if you feel pain, that is your problem; it is not her problem. THE INABILITY TO HOLD THE RUPEE IT is a distressing fact that the rupee is depreciating abnormally and the government is unable to get access to the key to steady the rupee. The people at large are fed up of listening to the ‘economists’ in the government, starting from the PM giving reasons and assuring the country men of a good ‘economy’ in the near future by talking about reforms, FDI etc. But they are being contradicted by making the people reel under inflation without any tangible signs of respite. This country is suffering from an inefficient government as a whole and perceptively there is a lack of inclination to do justice to the rupee-related matters, in particular, the disparity against the USD. This decrepit government is only becoming increasingly brazen and doesn’t seem to feel a pinch even in the face of repeated criticism from the SC and huge scams like 2G, Coalgate, CWG etc. — T.M. Suspicious death TIME and again we find whistleblowers and anti-superstition activists facing gruesome deaths for their provocation on various matters of public interest. Anti-superstition activist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar was shot dead by unknown assailants in LETTER OF Pune yesterday. IT is unfortunate that the opposition parties are doing what they can to block the passage of the Food Security Bill by not facilitating a discussion on it in the parliament under some pretext or the other, the latest being the missing Coalgate files. They all know that this bill is a boon to the poor but since it is a pet project of the Congress, they all perceive it as the party’s trump card for winning the 2014 elections. Interestingly, the bill is already in force in the Congress-governed states. fall of the Indian Rupee against the US dollar. The situation is going from bad to worse and there is no amicable solution in sight to end the slide. The Indian rupee continued to plumb new depths recording its biggest fall in a single day fall in a decade. As an economist, he can revive the balance of payments position and make things move in a proper direction within a fortnight or so. THE rupee’s fall will have a direct controversies. On the whole, confusion prevails in the Congress-led government. The opposition accused the government of hiding facts in the coal scam by citing the excuse of missing files. They alleged the Prime Minister’s involvement. impact on foreign investors pulling off the Indian equity markets and the students studying abroad, as they will have to cough up more in rupee terms. A high cost of an overseas degree is spurring split education programmes. A student planning to study in a foreign country might have planned to complete the course with Rs.45 lakh but would now need to pay Rs.55 lakh as the dollar is gaining against the Indian rupee. Parents, who have taken a huge sum as loan with their property mortgaged now feel the pinch as they need to borrow more and cough up more interest to the banks. However, a foreign education never really pinched the rich. Since 1990s, the economical scene is improving and that ignited the dreams of the middle class of acquiring a foreign degree. Thus the twinning courses gain more importance. This will help the students to seek admission in Indian universities and then fly out to any of the 70 partner universities to complete the remaining education at a cost for the next two years. — Jayanthy Subramaniam, Sion

tise the tragedy in a manner that puts the blame on the train, and not only exempts the victims of responsibility, but also sympathises with them. Has it not occurred to anyone that it was not the train but the stupidity of mindlessly barging across active railway tracks that was responsible for this tragedy? It’s the bane of Indian culture never to be responsible for one’s own well-being but to invariably hold others accountable, and the epitome of such attitude is, unsurprisingly, exemplified by pilgrims, who en masse visit deities to take care of their lives, even to the extent of dying doing so. Wake up, Indians, and be responsible for yourselves. — Phiroze Javeri, Mumbai

Women: Soft targets for molesters

The Mumbai locals have become a favourite for those targetting women. RAPE and molestation cases are on the rise in the metro city of Mumbai. Women are scared of travelling by trains and buses alone and night travel is all the more risky. It is indeed a shameful act by another man to have attacked a woman on a local train. The spirit of working women is rather high. They not only take the lead at home and office but play a crucial role in achieving whatever required in the available time. Women take up majority of the work at home in her role as a home maker. Suc-

cess is a journey and not a destination. But we often come across acid attacks and hot oil retaliation of women that worry us. The major drawback in the system is the casual punishment to the offenders and rapists. The crime is thus committed frequently and the culprit often escapes punishment. In some cases, women do not have the courage to report the crime and the person thus roams scot-free. The trauma is unbearable for a woman.

film producers should try not to include rape scenes in their films to make them Box Office hits. Women are projected as sex objects and thus suffer humiliation. Even after 65 years of Independence, the atrocities on women continue. Film producers will do a world of good if they take it up to save the pride of women. It is indeed a testing time for women today. Women are thus the soft targets in a male dominated society.

— Akhila Gopalan, Chembur

— A. Subbu, Navi Mumbai

AN increasing number of women are facing attacks in trains, colleges, secluded places, cinema halls, bus, etc. There is no one to control the crimes against women and in most cases there are eye-witnesses but the crime takes place nonetheless. We find the cine world in India giving importance to rape scenes and this, according to me, is one of the reasons for atrocities against women in the real world. From here on, Bollywood and other

‘I cannot control perception’ That is what Sherlyn Chopra thinks plays a role in fuelling the controversies surrounding her. In a chat with Dev Goswami, she talks about the person she is, her Playboy experience and Twitter

>> (From left to right) Banu, Cheyyrian, Mithy and Minam will be playing at Hard Rock Café tonight at 9pm (Entry: `150)

Girl power Priyanka Singh speaks to Mithy Tatak, the drummer of the all-girl band The Vinyl Records (TVR), before they perform tonight at Hard Rock Café

T

he ideation of The Vinyl Records, which is a New Delhibased all-girl band, started with Mithy Tatak (drummer), Minam Tekseng (bass/vocals), and Banu Jini (guitar/vocals) in 2010. It’s fascinating how a drummer, a bassist and a guitarist, all from Arunachal Pradesh, crossed paths, liked each other’s sound sensibilities and decided to form a band. By 2011, the band became a quaternary when they met Cheyyrian Bark (vocalist and keyboards) and that’s when The Vinyl Records embarked on their musical journey. They describe their sound as indie rock, new wave and post punk and their inspirations range from CSS and The Donnas to The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys. Below are excerpts of our talk with Mithy:

Tell us about how the band formed. The idea of forming a band started out as a fun experiment when Minam, Banu and I moved to New Delhi. A year after our first gig in 2011, we met Cheyyrian at a music school. That’s how The Vinyl Records was born. How did you guys zero in on the kind of sound sensibility that your band has? Luckily, all of us share a similar taste in music: indie-pop-punk to rock ‘n’ roll. Has the band ever had differences? How do you go about solving them? Being in a band we learn a lot of things.

ontroversy or not, there is one thing about Sherlyn Chopra that is evident — she is quite frank and upfront. We get talking with the actress, who is busy shooting for her forthcoming movie Kamasutra 3D.

There is a set image of you in the minds of many people. But, tell us... who exactly is Sherlyn Chopra? I prefer frankness to diplomacy. I am who I am. The real Sherlyn Chopra enjoys being an exhibitionist with a sense of real integrity. People who fail to comprehend that integrity and nudity can co-exist in harmony will never ever find out who I truly am and what I truly stand for. Speaking of controversies, how do you handle them? I merely express myself. If that is perceived as controversial, so be it. I can control my self-image, not perceptions. The perceptions no longer affect the reality of my life. How was your experience at The Playboy shoot? It has been one of the best experiences of my life on all accounts. In early 2012, I wanted to do something really big to resurrect my career. Little did I know that while trying to do so, I’d end up resurrecting my life as well! I came across information that you underwent liposuction. Is having a perfect figure a necessity in Bollywood? The first sentence amuses me! I remember undergoing a procedure for breast implants; I do not remember doing liposuction. I’d have to have extra fat in my body for that! To answer the question, not all the leading ladies in the industry have the ‘perfect’ figure — which is self-explanatory about its significance. You’re quite active on Twitter… I love to express myself. I feel immensely blessed to be able to connect with the youth on such digital platforms. What can we expect from you in the near future? Unadulterated excellence, chutzpah and brutal honesty.

• Use a cloth tape as it’s more accurate than a metal one. • Don’t trust yourself to remember your measurements, always write them down. • The measuring tape should never be too tight over any part of your body. • Measure yourself over bare skin — clothes can give you a centimeter or inch off that will actually make a difference later on.

« CELEB HIT OR MISS: GLYNDA ALVES GIVES YOU HER VERDICT ON THE FASHION ON DISPLAY THIS WEEK « « DiVya Dutta

kiran rao

While a black dress is usually a safe choice for most events, it’s clearly not a winner here. The dress is an odd length for Divya and the cut near her arms seems to be uncomfortable and ill-fitting. The outfit is also a little bland, thanks to the matching black shoes.

Sometimes, it’s hard to do this one on your own, so get a family member to help you out: • Place your elbow at a 90° angle, with your hand on your waist. • Measure the length from the back of your neck till these three points: shoulder, elbow and wrist. • Write each measurement down separately as those are your different sleeve lengths. • To measure your upper arm, wrap the tape around not the highest, but the widest part of your upper arm.

heart of the matter

stayinG hip

Taking your chest measurements is important not only for bras, but also when you need to buy fitting tops. Remember though that this isn’t your bra size: • To get the best measurement, wrap the measuring tape around your chest, under your armpits and around your shoulder blades. • Make sure that you have wrapped it around the fullest part of your bust and write that down as your full bust or chest measurement.

The size of your hips is important whether you’re buying a pair of trousers, jeans, a skirt or a dress. So, if you don’t already know your size, get the measuring tape: • Place the measuring tape over the largest part of your buttocks. This is where your hips are. • Try to do it in front of a mirror, because the tape has to be kept at a level, which you won’t be able to see if you bend down. • Wrap it around from one hip to the other. • If you need an inseam measurement, measure the distance from the inner part of your thigh (the highest part) down to your ankle. You may need someone to do this for you. • A quick tip to measuring an inseam if you don’t want to ask a friend is to simply measure the length (the inside from your crotch to your ankle) of jeans or trousers that fit you perfectly.

miD-leVel Most people wear their jeans and skirts below waist level, so we’re sure you know that measurement. But, don’t use that as a guessing point for your natural waist: • Circle the measuring tape around your waist at the smallest part below your rib cage. • Make sure you don’t suck your tummy in — you’ll only end up with uncomfortably tight clothes! • While measuring, make sure the tape is not hanging loose, or too tightly cinched around your waist. You should be able to breathe, but not insert a finger through the gap between the tape and your skin.

Darling, we know you want to be taken seriously as a director and not just be known as a Bollywood wife, but you don’t have to go to such an extent. The top half of her look is okay but then we get to the bottom half. It’s just a mishmash of colours, textures and prints. Eek!

There’s no denying that Simi has a very clear “look” that she sticks to. What we like about this white outfit are the subtle accents of colour. The striped t-shirt, the piping on the blazer, the beautiful tan bag and a dash of plum lipstick prevent this outfit from looking too stark.

We love the slouchy dress and think it looks fabulous on Shilpa. She stands out from the crowd in this outfit and her makeup, with bold red lips, suits this look perfectly. Our only gripe is that she should have worn a little more bling as it could be mistaken for a tee.

The popular South Indian actress is a fashion fail at this event. Her shirt is a combination of lace and checks (really, who makes these horrible combinations?) and her makeup and hair are super boring. Let’s not even start on those shoes! This girl needs a stylist.

1. boDy type The skirt gets its name from its shape — an inverted tulip. That means the shape is pretty much suitable for everyone. It gives slim girls the illusion of curves and curvy girls can hide an inch or two under this design. 2. the riGht fabric The tulip is gentle and delicate and you need to remember that when buying a skirt in this design. Choose a tulip skirt in a light material such as crepe, satin or silk, so that the skirt is not stiff and bulky. Getting a tulip skirt in wool, denim or corduroy will look heavy and won’t drape well. 3. patterns If you’re buying a tulip skirt, you’ll get the most wear out of one that is self coloured or with a small print. ith the boost in online shopping, it has never been as important to know your correct size so that you’re not filled with disappointment when your parcel arrives. Most of us have a general idea of our size and with ‘S,’ ‘M,’ and ‘L’ being the most popularly sold sizes in women’s clothing, there’s often no reason to know what your inseam is and what size your arms are. But, most women don’t get it right even when they do measure themselves. It’s always a good idea to know your size, so we’re telling you how to find out accurately:

4. tops To get the full effect of the tulip skirt you need to show it off properly — from waist to knee. Slim fitting shirts and blouses tucked into a tulip skirt look best. You can also wear body suits. Avoid bulky tops and don’t let them hang over the waistband of the skirt as this can make you look bigger than you are. >> Zoe Saldana shows off her legs in a silk tulip skirt

5. shoes When wearing a tulip skirt, it’s best to pair it with high heels. Heels add a few inches and offset the hips. Match your heels with the colour of your skirt or choose nude heels. If you’d really prefer to wear flats, make sure they are a subtle colour.

dealinG With a PMsinG boss and a Co-Worker Who harasses you I’ve just got a new job and while the first few weeks went great, a colleague on my team recently started harassing me. He’s been acting a little too familiar, often pokes and prods me to make a point and leans in close when he wants to say something. It’s all very subtle, so I don’t think people around me have noticed that it makes me uncomfortable. The worst part is, he calls me after work hours and is even more forthcoming if we bump into each other outside office. While I know I can go to HR about how he behaves at work, can I bring up what he is like outside office as well? Everyone seems to like him, so I’m not sure what to do. Please help me! — dipiksha Patel, Goregaon dear dipiksha, Have you tried talking to him about it first? Chances are he doesn’t realise that he’s crossing a line, especially if you haven’t said anything about it so far. If he is doing it intentionally, it’s a good idea to see if he’s being like that with everyone or just with you. If he is like this in general, politely tell him to back off and make the lines clear when it comes to how he should talk and behave with you at work. Also, don’t answer calls after working hours and firmly insist that your relationship stay professional. If none of this helps, go to HR. However, there’s not much they can do about harassment outside the work place. As a woman, I understand PMS and the moodiness that comes with it. That being said, I think my boss takes it for granted that there are so many women on my team. Every month, there are a few days when she is completely unapproachable. She’s in a sullen mood, snaps at everyone and seems to take all her frustration and moodiness out on the other women in the team, because she’s as sweet as sugar to the guys. It’s been a long standing joke, but recently, it has started to affect how she handles our projects and the feedback that she gives us. Is there anything I can do about this? Should I complain to HR? — shefali d’souza, santacruz (W) dear shefali, All women go through mood swings around that time of month, so on a personal level, you may not be able to get her to stop snapping at you. There’s no need to go to HR though, because she probably doesn’t even realise what she’s doing! It shouldn’t be affecting your work, but you’ll have to approach the situation carefully. If other people around you feel the same way, then think about talking to her about it. Don’t talk to her during that time of month and don’t bombard her as a group. Make sure she knows you’re only talking about work and not attacking her PMS personality. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

inutes spent in the elevator can seem like hours. These are some of the most uncomfortable moments, when you don’t know where to look or what to do. You can’t talk to the friend who has accompanied you inside the elevator because everyone can hear what you’re saying. Thankfully, because of our mobile phones, elevator trips have become less awkward. While you must know and follow elevator etiquette religiously; such as standing away from the door when waiting to board an elevator or holding the door open if someone is coming in, sometimes it’s fun to make that elevator trip a memorable one that will keep you (and maybe those at the receiving end) smiling through the day. Here are quick 21 ways in which you can make your elevator rides less boring. A word of caution, though — you need a lot of guts and nonchalance to pull off any of the following pranks:

ELEVATOR LOLS! Think that elevator rides are awkward? Priyanka Singh thinks you can do some crazy things in there if you have the right amount of pluck!

1. When you get off the elevator, turn back and whisper ominously to the others who stayed on, “I’d get off the elevator NOW if I were you.” 2. When there is only one other person in the elevator, tap them on the shoulder and then pretend it wasn’t you. 3. Push a button, pretend it gave you a shock. Smile and go back for more. 4. Ask the others in the elevator which floor they’re going to, but push the wrong buttons. 5. Pretend to make a call and say, “Hello? Psychic helpline? Can you tell me which floor I am on?” 6. Pretend to be in a deep conversation with an imaginary friend. 7. Drop a pen, wait for someone to pick it up and then yell, “That’s mine!” 8. Open your purse slightly and say, “Do you have enough air in there?” 9. At your floor, grunt and strain to yank the doors open and then act embarrassed when they open by themselves. 10. When at least six people have boarded, moan from the back: “Oh, not now... not motion sickness!” 11. Stare at another passenger for a while, then announce “You’re one of THEM!” and move to the

far corner of the elevator. 12. Announce in a demonic voice: “I must find a more suitable host body.” 13. Lean over to a fellow passenger and state knowingly: “They’re still watching me.” 14. While the doors are opening, hurriedly whisper, “Hide it, quickly!” and then look up and whistle innocently. 15. Draw a little square on the floor with chalk and announce to the other passengers that this is your personal space. 16. Make explosive noises when anyone presses a button. 17. Wrinkle your nose and smell the air repeatedly. Sniff at your neighbour suspiciously, give them a disgusted frown and take a step away from them. 18. Ask in a worried voice, “Did you feel that?” 19. This one’s for the folks who have had a very boring day. Place a chair inside the elevator and when someone gets in, ask them if they have an appointment. 20. When the doors close, announce to the others, “It’s okay. Don’t panic, they open up again.” 21. Stare, grinning at another passenger for a while, then announce, “I have new socks on!”

Alarmed by your rising electricity bill? Dev Goswami brings you the top five culprits that could be the reason behind your high energy usage

Shutterstock

Power hungry

>> Shocked by your four figure electricity bill? Your home appliances are the culprits

I

n this day and age, gadgets have become increasingly common. From smartphones and high-definition televisions (HDTV) to refrigerators and air-conditioners, you’ll find these appliances in almost every household. While they do have their benefits, there’s also a big negative point — high electricity bills. We tell you about the five most energy-hogging appliances and how you can save on your electricity consumption.

Air-conditioners This should be unsurprising; airconditioners are responsible for a large chunk of your electricity bill. The best way to keep usage low is to turn it on only when needed. The temperature of your airconditioner too plays a role and setting it at 25-26°C is the best option. Also, use the timer feature to turn off the AC in a few hours. If you keep your room closed, the cooling effect will last longer.

entertAinment system When it comes to your television set, the bigger and more ‘awesome’ your TV screen, the more energy it will consume. Also, the combination of high-definition TVs and their corresponding high-definition set-top box can also prove to be major energy-hogs. There’s not a lot you can do to reduce the usage. However, you can keep the home theatre system off when you’re just watching the news or daily soaps.

computers Yes, your PC uses a lot of energy too. But, you

can’t banish it from your life, can you? What you can do instead is buy according to your needs — do you really need a huge, HD monitor when all you’ll be doing is browsing the internet and checking mail? Also, when you’re done using your PC, instead of putting it on sleep mode, switch it off.

refrigerAtors You might have never thought of your refrigerator as an energy hogging appliance, but think about the fact that it is on 24 hours of the day, seven days a week and you’ll

understand why we’ve placed it on our list. One of the most important steps to avoid high electricity costs is to use newer, more energy-efficient models. That doesn’t mean that you upgrade your model every year. But, if you’ve been using the same refrigerator for the past 10 years, consider buying a newer model. Other small but effective steps you can take is are defrost regularly (frost buildup hurts efficiency), check the seals on the doors to ensure there is no leaking of cool air, adjust the temperature as per the season and follow smart refrigeration practices such as labelling containers so that

it’s faster to search for them, know what you want before opening the door and cooling hot food before placing it in the fridge.

electric treAdmills Compared to everything else on this list, treadmills might not consume as much energy. But, electric treadmills are best left for gyms. Buying one for your home will needlessly increase your energy costs. If you must buy a treadmill, opt for manual ones which do not use a motor to rotate the belt and so, do not use any electricity.

« TOP 5: MOVIES FOR CHILDREN WITH A MESSAGE Some movies can teach children novel values that are difficult to express in words. Priyanka Singh helps you out by listing a few such films

The Black STallion (Ages 7 And up)

Based on a book of the same name, children will envy the unbreakable bond that forms between a young castaway and a wild horse. In a simple way, this movie will teach your children about kindness and love.

Finding nemo (Ages 6 And up)

This Oscar-winning film can actually be watched by the whole family as it’s enjoyable for people of all age groups. Your family will root for a clown fish who goes on a daring mission to find his lost spawn.

Toy SToRy 2 (Ages 5 And up)

Favourite toy Woody discovers he’s a celebrity: a collector’s item from a classic TV show. This sequel surpasses the original by combining fantasy and action with a soulsearching theme as Woody must choose between love and fame.

The Red Balloon (Ages 4 And up)

In this beautiful, wordless 1956 tale of friendship and loss, a helium-filled balloon magically follows a lonely boy through the streets of Paris. Beautifully innocent, this one will have a lasting impression on your child.

BaBe (Ages 5 And up)

Children will grow attached to Babe, the pig who beats the odds to work as a sheepdog and learn many invaluable lessons. However, you might have to deal with your children’s demands of getting them a pig as a pet later on.

efore the wedding there were questions such as, “Are you sure about him?” “Does the wedding dress fit well?” and “Where are you planning on going for your honeymoon?” The bride thought that after the wedding bells, she’d probably get some respite from the poking questions, but unfortunately for her, that hardly happens. In fact, sometimes the questions become even more personal and annoying. A lot of people don’t know that there are a few questions that a newlywed woman hates coming across. And most of these questions are, sadly, the most commonly asked ones. We tell you which questions you should stop yourself from asking a newlywed woman.

Don’t tell me you are going to take on his super long surname! Four words: None of your business. Whether she sticks to her maiden name, adds his or drops hers and adopts his, you don’t have to ask her as it is her personal choice. More so, when the husband’s surname is not exactly the surname that we’d want for ourselves; you will surely come to know in the near future. Spare her from your histrionics as she is the one who has to live with the name, not you.

« SoS: Solve our Situation! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

Gynelle Alves

I am very confused and need some good advice. The problem I have is something I cannot discuss with my parents, or even with my best friend. Actually, the problem is about my best friend... Our mothers have been best friends from their college days and we have grown up very close...

In fact, on the walls of each of our homes is a picture of Honey and I as babies on our first Rakhi together. Over the years, we have been as close as siblings and every Rakhi without fail, she renews what she jokingly calls her ‘contract with the brother protection program.”

Cheap and best!

BaBies? BaBies! Give her a break! She just got married! Once you’re married, people get very interested in knowing when you are hopping on to the next phase of your life which for most means starting a family. Also, there are so many reasons she might not want to discuss this issue — from infertility to financial or psychological issues — making it not the best time to discuss infants. Don’t bring up this question unless you are really close to the newlywed woman. Unless, of course, you want to have straight answers such as, ‘You’ll see’ (true story) or ‘We’re happy at having recreational sex for now’ (true story, again!) thrown back at you.

Over the last year, my eyes are suddenly seeing what a gem of a girl she is. She is my strength and counsellor. I really admire her. But, I was not expecting what happened this Rakhi. The very moment her hands touched mine...

Why are you here Without your spouse? is everything all right? That will make her feel unwelcome, most certainly. A newlywed couple is often seen as one of those buy-one-getone-free packages. It is perfectly normal for both of them to turn up somewhere without the other. And it certainly doesn’t mean that they are going to file for divorce the next day! Ask questions like, “Is he busy at work?” and you’ll get the answer that you were looking for without making it sound like their marriage has hit the rocks.

It was like an electric shock! Then, I looked into her eyes...

hoW’s marrieD life?

There are a number of changes that she is grappling with right now. It might seem like a harmless question, but it sure makes the newly married woman confused and stressed on how she should answer it in the most satisfactory manner. Will saying ‘Fine’ mean too boring or being a little whiny lead to furrowed brows about the happiness of her marriage? If she goes on harping about how happy she is, she’ll end up sounding like a show-off. So, do her a favour and don’t ask her this question. Instead ask, “What’s new?” and you’ll get a better response.

ntertainment Tonight airs at 7 pm every Monday to Friday on BIG CBS LOVE. Some of the stories this week include ‘Lohan Admits Addiction in a Candid Interview’. Lindsay Lohan sat down for her anticipated first interview since leaving rehab with Oprah Winfrey on her own series Oprah's Next Chapter. Lohan prefaced the interview, which was shot four days after the 27-year-old actress left rehab on July 30, with her intention to “be me and be open and honest”. Winfrey covered an array of pertinent topics with Lohan, ranging from her most recent stint in rehab to her thoughts on the perception that her parents have exploited her in some manner. As Lohan's recent rehab stay was her sixth total, she revealed that she has been in and out of rehab because she hadn't been taking promises seriously, even those that were court-ordered. However, unlike the other occasions, in which she felt as though her rehab stays were punishment, she says she didn't fight the idea that she needed help this time around and was willing to admit her need for clinical assistance. On the topic of rehab and run-ins with the law, Lohan described her 2010 arrest for DUI as “terrifying”, although she also admitted that her subconscious mind “kind of wanted to go to jail...just to find some peace”. Though let's be real, would any hair style really look bad on Beyonce?

We met the management of Lovable Lingerie (Lovable) to understand the company’s growth plans and strategies to deal with the weak macro environment. The management acknowledged that sales growth has not picked up as anticipated owing to a weak consumer sentiment. Nonetheless, the company is budgeting ~20% revenue growth on the back of product extensions and a growing distribution channel. We have factored in revenue growth of 10.2% over FY13 considering Q1FY14 (which is seasonally a strong quarter) has also reflected low single digit growth. The management is also optimistic about a revival in the operating margin on the back of price hikes and lower ad spends. The company is also considering entering the men’s segment through acquisition of an existing brand. FY13 was a difficult year for the company as revenue growth slowed down significantly. On the other hand, the company also increased ad spends in anticipation of a sales pick-up. Both these factors impacted the PAT performance of the company. The company’s long and established presence in the women’s innerwear segment gives it a competitive edge over its peers. We recommend that investors use declines to accumulate the stock. Presence in fast growing women’s innerwear segment: Lovable’s presence in the fast growing women’s innerwear segment gives it an edge over other smaller players. As FY13 was a difficult year, the revival in topline growth remains a key monitorable. We recommend that investors use declines to accumulate the stock. Owing to the recent price correction we upgrade Lovable Lingerie to BUY with a target price of Rs 290 (20x FY15E EPS –at a 15% discount to Page Industries’ multiple).

Nirmal Bang calls a ‘Buy’ on LIC Housing Finance CMP: Rs. 159

Target Rs. 208

LIC Housing Finance (LICHF) reported results in line with expectations. Loan growth driven by individual loan/retail book witnessed steady growth. Though individual loan book witnessed growth of 24.2% YoY, overall disbursement witnessed slow down and grew mere 13.4% YoY. Margins were lower sequentially; however improved YoY from 2.18% to 2.3%.Feeincome declined owing to subdued lending in the developer/ corporate book. PAT grew 36.3% YoY owing to lower provisions (decline of 60.7% YoY). GNPA increased to 0.8% (0.71% in Q1FY13) and net NPA ratio stood at 0.52% in vs 0.39% in Q1FY13. We have lowered our NIM expectation by 30bps taking into account some pressure on the company’s cost of funds post the recent tightening measures taken by the RBI. Consequently, we have reduced our earnings estimate for FY14E and now expect 11.8% CAGR in PAT for FY13-FY15E (vs 27% CAGR earlier). RoE is expected to remain subdued at 16.3% for FY15E after witnessing a decline in FY14E. We have also lowered our multiple from 2.0x to 1.5x in lieu of the prevailing macro economic conditions and arrive at target price of Rs 208 suggesting an upside of 32.4% from current levels. GEPL Capital calls a ‘Buy’ on Lupin CMP: Rs. 767

Target Rs. 951

Valuation: Strong pipeline of products in US, consistent product launches, increasing penetration in Japan — the world’s second largest Pharmaceutical market and consistent performance year after year are some of the reasons why the Lupin stock continues to be darling of retail and institutional investors. However, the domestic business is facing headwinds due to pricing pressures which are expected to arise from New Drug Price Control Order. Also, earnings from the Japanese business look slightly weak due to Yen depreciation and delay in contract manufacturing. At the CMP of Rs 847, Lupin is trading at 19x its FY15E EPS of Rs 44. We feel that at this P/E multiple, the stock is richly valued and there is limited room for further upside. However, we are extremely bullish on the long term prospects of the company. We initiate coverage on LUPIN with an ACCUMULATE rating and target price of Rs 951, implying upside potential of 12% and an exit multiple of 21.5x.

he rupee could touch the 70 level against the US dollar in a month’s time, although some revival of the currency is expected by the end of the year, Deutsche Bank said in a research note yesterday. The currency had hit a fresh intra-day low of 64.13 against the USD on Tuesday. “Fundamentally the rupee is undervalued and has overshot its equilibrium level substantially;“ the German banking major said adding “under a scenario of deep pessimism, currencies can overshoot substantially and remain so for a long time. India, we fear, is entering such a zone.” “We now believe that the rupee could touch 70 to the USD in a month or so, although we expect

some revival of the currency by the end of the year as the reality of taper turns out to be less disruptive down the road than it is now, and the current account deficit continues to decline,” Deutsche Bank said. Meanwhile, the government has taken a slew of measures in recent months to prevent this vicious cycle, and though some of these measures like enhanced provision for FDI are likely to serve India well in the long term, but a number of measures have also suggested “haphazard decision-making”, it said. The research note further added that episodes of currency crisis also cause a range of negative spillovers, the most crucial of which is the health of the financial sector as rupee depreciation and rising cost of financing will put Indian borrowers under further stress.

According to Deutsche Bank, considering such risks (pushing up bad loans sharply, damaging the balance sheet of corporations and banks), “ratings agencies may be nudged toward a downgrade, although conditions have to be weak for another quarter or two before that were to transpire.” To prevent the crisis from deepening, Indian authorities need to gear up for recapitalising banks and supporting corporate refinancing, it said. “Given the weak state of the fiscal position, this may entail a major rethink of the expenditure programme (especially plan spending), accelerated sales of stateowned assets, and a major external bond issuance with a credible set of macro-fiscal-structural policies underlying the programme,” the report added.

Monsoons Become A Source Of Comfort For Economy By A Business Reporter

T

BUSINESS

he ongoing monsoons have been one of the very few bright spots for the Indian economy in recent times. The favourable monsoons have been a source of comfort for India’s rainfed agriculture and the nation’s economy alike given its strong and direct linkages with food prices, rural incomes & consumption and overall economic activity & prospects, says a just released analysis on monsoons and what it could mean for agriculture in FY14 by CARE Ratings Economic Division. With rainfall being the primary factor determining the performance of agriculture in the country, India is largely expected to see record food grains output this year, on the back of the bountiful South West Monsoons. The South West Monsoons, which

runs from June-September, accounts for 70-80% of India’s annual rainfall and is a major determinant of the kharif crop output. The kharif season, one of the two main cropping season of the country, accounts for nearly 50% of India’s food grains production and nearly 70% of its oilseeds output. On the whole, the kharif season accounts for nearly half of India’s agricultural output. The good monsoon and expected good harvest would have positive linkages with industry. Good production prospects improves demand for tractors, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation systems (even when using water from natural sources) etc. Based on crop prospects, the milling, dairy, edible oils, sugar (area is still above normal), textiles industries would receive favourable response on the inputs side. The ongoing monsoons have

been touted to be the best the country has seen in nearly two decades. As per the latest data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the country has for the period 1st June-14th August’13, recorded normal to excess rainfall in 30 out of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions of the country. The all India area weighted rainfall this year (till mid-August) has been 13% above normal. Overall, the country is likely to gains from the favourable monsoons on various fronts. Agriculture would undoubtedly benefit from the favourable monsoons this year and we expect it to grow by 3% this fiscal, higher than the 1.9% of last year. Further, aided by the monsoons, inflation too is likely to moderate through the year. “We estimate WPI to average 6.5% in 2013-14, lower than the7.4% of 2012-13” concludes Care Ratings.

Cabinet may consider DTC Bill today FISHING IN TROUBLED WATERS… Villagers catching fish at the Chakaltore Dam which is overflowing due to incessant rains in Purullia on Wednesday.

Suggestions to raise the income-tax exemption limit to Rs.3 lakh from Rs.2 lakh

N

EW DELHI: The Cabinet is likely to consider the Direct Taxes Code (DTC) Bill, ON Thursday, which seeks to overhaul the over 50-year old income-tax law, with minor rejigs in the draft, including in the income-tax slabs. “The DTC Bill is on the agenda of the Cabinet meeting tomorrow,” a source told PTI. The exemption limit at Rs 2 lakh for individual tax payers is unlikely to be touched, but a new slab of 35 per cent may be introduced for the superrich. Besides, Minimum Alternate Tax (MAT) may be levied on book profit and not on gross assets, sources said. Further, the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) is likely to be

retained, as against the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Finance that the levy be abolished, reports PTI. Among other things, the Standing Committee, headed by senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha, had suggested raising the income-tax exemption limit to Rs.3 lakh from Rs.2 lakh proposed in the DTC Bill, 2010. The DTC bill, which aims to rationalise tax rates to bring more people and companies under the tax net, was introduced in Parliament in 2010. Finance Minister P Chidambaram had earlier said he intends to bring the DTC Bill in the Monsoon session of Parliament, following submission of the Standing

Committee’s recommendations. The ongoing Monsoon session is scheduled to end on August 30. The first draft prepared by Chidambaram in 2009 had proposed an income-tax slabs of Rs 1.6-10 lakh, Rs 1025 lakh and Rs 25 lakh and above. Besides, corporate tax was proposed at 25 per cent. This was followed by the draft DTC Bill prepared by then-Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in 2010, which proposed the slabs at Rs 2-5 lakh, Rs 5-10 lakh and Rs 10 lakh and above and corporate tax at 30 per cent. The Standing Committee suggested slabs of Rs 3-10 lakh, Rs 10-20 lakh and Rs 20 lakh and above. On corporate tax, it recommended the rate be retained at 30 per cent.

Asaram booked for sexual assault N

EW DELHI: Controversial guru Asaram Bapu is in the news again for the wrong reasons with Delhi police filing a case against him on the complaint of a 16-year-old girl that he had sexually as-

saulted her in a Jodhpur Ashram recently. The teenage girl along with her parents went to Kamla Market police station here yesterday and gave a written complaint against the 74-

year-old self-styled godman of sexually assaulting her, reports PTI. “After sexual assault was confirmed in the medical examination of the girl, a case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered at Kamla Market police station. As the incident took place in Rajasthan, we have moved the case to Jodhpur,” a police official told PTI. However, a spokesperson of Asaram Bapu’s Ashram rubbished the charges. “This is an entirely false case. It is yet another attempt to tarnish Bapu’s image. Let the investigation happen. Whoever is behind this (case) will be exposed,” said Neelam Dubey, the Ashram’s spokesperson. Asaram had come under sharp criticism early this year after he made controversial remarks about the December 16 gangrape case when he said that the girl would have escaped the ordeal had he called her attacker brothers and pleaded them for mercy.

BJP trying to polarize yatra row: Cong N

EW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday accused BJP of trying to ‘communalise and polarise’ politics to win elections as a row raged over Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s threat to go ahead with its proposed yatra from Ayodhya defying a ban by Uttar Pradesh government while BJP favoured allowing the event. The Parishad, for its part, wanted Uttar government to reconsider its decision to disallow the yatra, reports PTI. Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said it was

“obvious from the day Amit Shah (Narendra Modi’s close aide) was made BJP general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh. There is nothing new in it....Because that is their agenda—communalise, polarise and try to win an election. That is BJP’s formula, BJP’s strategy from the beginning”. JD(U) termed as “absurd” VHP President Ashok Singhal’s threat to the state government that it will face “adverse consequences” if force was used to enforce a ban on its proposed yatra.

“Who is he (Singhal)? Is he a thekedaar of Hindus? I am also a Hindu. Will he decide for me? What is this VHP?...Who accepts VHP as the leader of Hindus? Who is he to issue threats,” party President Sharad Yadav said. He dismissed suggestions that the Yatra, which is an attempt to garner support for the Ram Temple issue, could lead to polarisation of votes in favour of BJP saying, “kaath ki hanndi baar baar nahin chadhati (you cannot milk an issue again and again)”.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Your immediate needs require hard work and perseverance and your efforts will be rewarded. If you are constrained seek help do not hesitate to ask for it. This will also give you a chance to also make it to a colleague you have been avoiding of late. Your current behavior is causing hurt and anguish to one who loves you dearly. It is in your own interest to stop playing games.

Jwala still nursing injury but hopes to play today

MUMBAI: Krissh Delhi Smashers' icon player Jwala Gutta, who missed her team's Indian Badminton League tie against Mumbai Masters, is yet to recover from a shoulder injury but the ace doubles shuttler is hopeful of playing against Awadhe Warriors today. "My shoulder is much better than what it was in Lucknow. It is still not 100 per cent healed. My physio suggested that I rest (against Mumbai) also. There is a little pain, there is little soreness but it's better," Jwala told reporters last night after Mumbai Masters thrashed Delhi Smashers 4-1. "But I am hopeful of playing the next match. I wanted to play today (against Mumbai). The stadium was fantastic. The atmosphere here is amazing. A lot of my friends were here. I wanted to play really but sometimes you can't help it," she said. Jwala said playing mixed doubles with foreign teammates was not difficult what if their styles are different. "Koo (Kien Keat) understands the game of doubles. It is very important to really understand the game of doubles because technically when you think about doubles, it is a bit different from singles. As long as he understands the game of doubles and I understand it, there is not much (difference). But the way they play and the way we play, there is a bit of difference. The way they move, the footwork, is different. I play a different game. I am more of a stroke player. They are coming straight from the World Championship so we hardly got any time to practice together. But now we have been practicing and we have been playing, so it's better now," Jwala said. Asked if she would partner a foreign player for the Super Series, the womens doubles gold medallist of 2010 Commonwealth Games replied in the negative.

‘HIDAYAT'S VIEWS NEED TO SPORTS

M

UMBAI: Former international Uday Pawar was surprised by shuttle queen Saina Nehwal's criticism of Taufik Hidayat's views over the Indian Badminton League auction process and said the retired Indonesian great's perspective needed to be respected, even if she had reservations. "Taufik Hidayat is a great player and has been a world and Olympic champion to boot. His views need to be respected, even if you don't agree to them," Pawar told PTI here. The retired Indonesian shuttler, who was bought by Saina's franchise team Hyderabad Hotshots for a paltry USD 15,000, was hurt that some of the top foreign players are being paid much less than lowerranked Indian counterparts. Hidayat's less experienced Hotshots teammates -- Pradnya Gadre (USD 46,000, base price — USD 10,000), Tarun Kona (USD 28,000,

base price — USD 15,000) and Ajay Jayaram (USD 25,000, same base price) -- were sold for higher amounts. "I felt bad when for the first time I saw on TV how much a player was bought for. I felt the IBL didn't treat the foreign players in the right manner. The price slab that was set was nonsense. Most of the foreign players were sold for their base price while the Indian players were bought for much higher prices," Hidayat told reporters here on Sunday. "I felt the IBL organisers did not take world rankings into consideration. This is my first and last IBL," said the 2004 Athens Olympics gold medal winner and world men's singles champion in 2005. Asked about the two-time Asian Games singles champion's views the next evening, London Olympic bronze medallist Saina said that the Indonesian should not expect too much since he has already retired

price and the Indonesian felt he deserved much more. Saina, however, said Hidayat should realise that he was a retired player, a comment which did not amuse Jwala. "Taufik Hidayat is one of the greatest players....And I don't think u can dismiss his views just because he has "retired" from the game!!!!," wrote Jwala, who plays for Delhi franchise in IBL, on her twitter page. JWALA SLAMS SAINA FOR HER "I don't know how anyone can COMMENTS ON HIDAYAT NEW DELHI: Top doubles bad- talk about him in such manminton player Jwala Gutta hit out at ner......Without giving him and his singles star Saina Nehwal for her stature any respect...It's absolutely comments that Taufik Hidayat sad!!!!," she said. Jwala did not name should accept the reality that he is a Saina in her series of tweets on the retired player and cannot get high- issue but in an apparent reference to the Hyderabadi, she said that she est base price in IBL. Hidayat, who is Saina's IBL team- should understand Hidayat's conmate in Hyderabad Hotshots fran- cern. "No matter how big u have bechise, had complained of unfair come in sport I think one should try treatment to foreign players by the and u’stand what ur fellow players league organisers. Hidayat was views r And work on it!!!," she bought for USD 15,000 at his base tweeted. from the international circuit. "I think world number one (Lee Chong Wei) got the highest price (of USD 1,35,000). I don't think there is anything unfair about it. He (Hidayat) should accept it that he has retired now so you can't get the highest base price of course. Its a negative thing to speak like this," said the world no. 4 women's player.

Kallis eyes a last shot at ODI World Cup J

OHANNESBURG: Senior allrounder Jacques Kallis has decided to end his six-month long sabbatical from ODIs and is ready to return to the South African squad for a last shot at the 50-over World Cup to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2015. Kallis on Tuesday reiterated his intention to extend his ODI career and to be a part of the Proteas team in their quest to win the next edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. "Playing for my country has always been both a huge honour and a privilege," Kallis said in a statement released by Cricket South Africa (CSA). "It remains my aspiration to be available for the 2015 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup but, at the same time, I know as an all-rounder approaching my 38th birthday, I will need to assess my future in the game season by season. At the moment I am feeling mentally and physically refreshed and I am look-

ing forward to carry on playing for my country as long as possible," he said. Kallis, who will be 38 in October, played his last ODI against New Zealand in February 2012. He, therafeter, opted to focus his career on Test matches and Indian Premier League. This means Kallis will be back for selection in the home series against India in November.

Welcoming Kallis's return to the side, CSA CEO Haroon Lorgat said, "Jacques is an extraordinary player who appreciates the ODI team building process that is currently under way." Lorgat added that CSA would do everything possible to help Kallis achieve his personal ambitions while building a new generation ODI team.

IN BRIEF Put national interest first, Sports Minister tells administrators

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 2013

I've taken it in my stride," Somdev told PTI in an interview. Now that he is getting back to his usual fighting self, demanding every single ounce of energy his opponent has in him to get the better of him, Somdev is now eyeing the top-100 bracket in the ATP rankings. "Remain healthy, fit and injury free! To finish the year top-100 would also be great," he said. It took Somdev a long time to get back to his winning ways. In the first half of the season, he struggled to get past even Qualifiers in big events. But Somdev said he never lacked energy or the fighting spirit in the face of consistent defeats. "I never really lost the drive or the never-give-up attitude," he said. At the French Open, from qualifying, he reached the second round where he lost to none other than Roger Federer. Then he made three semifinals on the Challenger tour.

NEW DELHI: Urging the Indian Olympic Association to sort out its differences with the IOC through negotiations, Sports Minister Jitendra Singh asked the administrators to put national interest first to ensure that the ban on India is revoked at the earliest. "The Government of India urges all concerned to ensure that individual interests should not come in the way of our national interest and good of sports. At the same time, the Government places highest emphasis on the standards of ethics and good governance as per the Olympic Charter," said Jitendra Singh in a release. The Minister welcomed the efforts to end the impasse between the International Olympic Committee and the IOA, and hoped that all sides will soon reach a consensus.

Kohli steady at tied 6th in ICC T20 rankings

DUBAI: Virat Kohli is the highest-ranked Indian batsman at joint sixth but there is no Indian presence in the top-10 of the bowlers' list in the latest ICC Twenty20 Rankings issued. At eighth, Suresh Raina is the second Indian batsman in the top-10 with Yuvraj Singh being a distant next best at 16th. Offspinner R Ashwin is the highest-ranked Indian bowler at 16th in the chart. Elsewhere, Pakistan will begin their twomatch Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe on August 23 with an aim to reduce the gap with number-one ranked Sri Lanka. The two-match series starts in Harare with the second match scheduled to be held on 24 August.

Poonia asked me to recommend her name for Khel Ratna: Anjali

NEW DELHI: Ace shooter and Khel Ratna selection panel member Anjali Bhagwat revealed that discus thrower Krishna Poonia had called her to lobby for the top honour just a day before the committee met. "She (Poonia) called me and asked me to recommend her name for the Khel Ratna award the day before the panel met," Bhagwat told PTI. A miffed Bhagwat said it was not right on Poonia's part to claim that it was she who got the list changed at the last moment to include Double trap World Champion Ronjan Sodhi's name in place the discus thrower.

EW DELHI: When Somdev Devvarman was at the peak of his career in 2011, a shoulder injury put a brake on his ascendancy but the gritty Indian says he has taken the tough period in his stride and is now aiming to re-enter the top-100 by the end of this season. Somdev re-established India on the singles map with his memorable wins on the Tour and in Davis Cup. That he was gradually becoming a force to reckon with reflected in his singles ranking when he touched a career-best 62 in mid-2011. However, a shoulder injury late in 2011 and a resultant surgery in early 2012, hit Somdev's career graph badly. In the entire 2012 season post rehabilitation, he could win just two matches out of nine he played. In the process, his ranking plummeted to 664. However, in the second half of the current year, he has again started to regain his space. He has moved to 113 on the back of his good run in the Challengers post Roland Garros. Asked how he looks back at the tough period and could it have been different had he not suf-

You got off to a great start this season, winning the first round. How important was the start for you? Definitely for me, the win got me to start the year on a high. Going in to the Polo R Cup 2013, I have just one aim, which is to be a champion. Considering this is my third year, I have a lot more experience but inspite of that, there were a lot more experienced competitors from South Africa and other drivers. I started the race in pole position and I went on and comfortably won that race. Race two was dicey because of the reverse grid. In the reverse grid, the top eight finishers are reversed in order. What happens is the guys who qualified in the end are placed in the front in Race Two. So the first corner in Race Two is chaos, luckily for me, I got my nose out clean and chased down the leaders and managed to grab the third place.

31

That was a one off drive for me and I wasn’t used to the car. Coming from touring cars to formula cars it was a very big challenge. There is lot of physical involvement when you are in a single-seater when it comes to physical fitness and endurance. The competitiveness is quite high and if you want take part in the ‘Formula’ you need to up your game.

Vishwanath Salian | ADC

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 2013

You have driven in the night race in Colombo, what was your experience in that race? It is one of the most brilliant events that I have witnessed. We were racing on the main streets of Colombo where the financial hub is in place. An event like that can be only created when you have immense backing from the officials and the government and they shut down the financial centre which was converted to a race track at night and we went on racing till 6 am.

How has the reverse grid helped in this format of racing? It is good especially in series like the Volkswagen Polo R Cup because of the simple reason all the cars are same. Teams are not competing in this series, it is driver versus driver all the time and if you are genuinely fast and have the pace you will be there. It encourages the new drivers to get a shot for the podium.

Where do you want to head from here? Racing is a capital intensive sport and not everyone with money can go and drive. You need someone to back you with money in order to go places. Even hockey gets more backing than motorsport. Racing in a GT series in Europe requires sponsorship. It has been difficult get sponsorship and has two sponsors this season. Is Super Bike Championship and the Formula One not getting a place in the Indian racing calendar this year a setback for Indian motorsport? I see it as a big setback. We have created an amazing stadium in Greater Noida, but what is the sense if you cannot host a world class event on a world class track where people want to come and race over there from abroad. In 2011, nobody loved the Indian Grand Prix, it was a mess and honestly their displeasure is shown here. There is a lot more to it.

‘I WILL RACE TILL I DIE’

You encountered a jump start for which you were penalised 20 seconds of

How long do you want to stay in the driver’s seat? How do you see motorsport in India go from here? I will be in the driver’s seat till the day I die. I

24-year-old RAHIL NOORANI has been burning rubber on the race track for quite some time now. He got off to a good start in the Polo R Cup Round 1 winning the first race and did well in the other races. With an aim to make it to the next level, Bandra boy Rahil speaks exclusively to NEIL JOSHI about his season so far in the driver’s seat, his experience with Formula BMW at the Buddh International Circuit and his aim and driving ambition for the coming two years.

your lap timing, despite doing well. How frustrating was that? That weekend it didn’t really go well as I made silly errors in qualifying and I started in fifth position in Race One. I found myself in third place and I was elated by that. The area I wasn’t happy was my immediate rivals had finished ahead of me, so that was a wake-up call for me and I knew I had to perform well in Race Two. Going in to Race Two, I was a bit anxious and that got the better of me. Four years in to racing, I never had a jump start and this came at a most crucial time. It was a rookie error. As soon as I did it I knew I had jumpstarted and I knew I was hard done. I won the race on track but finished the race in the seventh position.

Is it good to have cars of the same calibre? It is very encouraging because you cannot use an excuse that the other driver’s car is faster.

So you have a level playing field for everyone. All you are showing is what you can do. Everything you are doing on the track is because of you and it is not the car because everyone else is using the same car. And in A1 GP it is the driver’s skill which is shown there. If you compare A1 GP to Formula One, F1 is backed by so much money and they are all trying to go faster in order to score more points. It is a totally different ball game.

There was contemplation that Round Three would be street circuit and would be held in Srinagar. What is the current position on that? We were looking forward to that. The street circuit is something which is constructed just once and that too for a race, so nobody has driven there before. So not only are you are driving on an alien track, it is also very narrow and has got its own challenges. So the race was going to be held in Srinagar but has been

shifted to the Buddh International Circuit. I feel for the organisers because it is not easy to organise any motorsport event in India.

Since Jeffery Kruger is the only foreign national driver in the Polo R Cup, how difficult is it to get foreign drivers to participate in Indian events? They share a lot of their experience in the course of various interactions. Last year, too, we had a driver from Mexico and females from Denmark. We learn so much from them as they have a lot of experience in international motorsport. They come from a place where motorsport is a ‘cult’ where as here it’s the other way around. The government doesn’t recognise racing as a sport.

You have driven at the Buddh International Circuit for the Formula BMW Asia JK Series, how competitive is that as compared to the Polo R Cup?

will be racing all my life and even if I am married with kids. Motorsport in India will take a while before it goes anywhere. It is now that the people are opening up to it.

What created your love for cars? I never have love for a particular car. I just loved racing cars and the art of racing and battling with other people. Initially, I wanted to take up bike racing but my parents were against that. It was only when I was 17, that my parents allowed me to take the car and race it on a track. Where do you see yourself in a couple of years? I want to be the champion of the Polo R Cup this season. I want to go to Europe in the next season, which should be my dream. If you ask me, I would say Formula One, but realistically speaking, it is out of reach as I am too old. There is scope in other series which are really doing well.
