Rajagopalachari. 78year-old Gandhi, who yesterday joined forces with Arvind Kejriwal. is likely to get an AAP ticket in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls from Delhi. After joining the AAP, Gandhi said, “I joined the party looking at the enthusiasm of its members. It has grown from the roots and does not see politics as dirty and something that should be avoided. I am open to contesting, but contesting against Narendra Modi is a very long shot. At one point, the Congress was an aam aadmi party, now it has become the khas aadmi party. BJP is the rich people's party." “The party is vehemently opposed to the corruption and that is the only reason why I joined it. There is a disparity between the Continued on pg 8 «

wo days into the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams, the board has caught 100 copycats across the state. Mumbai, which had a clean record in the year 2012, had 66 copy cases registered last year. The Mumbai division has now recorded 11 copycats, with one being a dummy candidate who sat for another candidate by faking his identity. With the increase in number of copying cases, the state board has tightened vigil with flying squads to check and officials to deal into copying cases and instances of

Wasimuddin Jahiruddin Khan (42) and Ramsahi Sukar Yadav (28). According to the police, last week, a victim named Mubin Shaikh (35), a businessman from Mumbai had gone to Dubai for a holiday, and used a cab to get to the Dubai airport. At Mumbai international airport, as he looked for a cab, someone called him by name. The persons identified themselves as cops and told him that they wanted to check his bag as he was a smuggler and had brought contraband from Dubai. They gave him details about his flight, which got him worried. However, Shaikh said that he would open his bags only at the police station, so the three accused took him along with them. Minutes later, they got down at a secluded place and robbed him off his gold bracelet, cash and valuables. China keen to start martial arts course with MU By A Staff Reporter

C

hina on Friday offered to start a programme in martial arts through Mumbai University. This was announced by the Consul General of China, Liu Youfa, during a meeting with Governor K. Sankaranarayanan at the Raj Bhavan. Youfa told the Governor that having established a Confucius Institute at the University of Mumbai last year, China is now considering offering a programme in martial arts through the varsity. The programme will train students in self defence, he said. He also said that China was seriously considering setting up an Industrial Park in Nashik, a Raj Bhawan spokesperson told PTI. An area of 2,000 acres has been identified for the purpose. According to Youfa, the China Industrial Park will have 20-30 nonpolluting, high-end manufacturing and IT companies which will provide direct employment to nearly 3,000 people. Youfa told the governor that his country had declared 2014 as the 'Year of Friendly Exchanges' and would be hosting a festival in June which will draw participation from friendly countries. He invited Maharashtra to participate in the event. Youfa, an economist by training, said the trade volume between India and China was US $64 billion last year. Efforts are being made to increase the same, he added. Youfa said he has been conducting market research in Mumbai and Bangalore to identify new areas of co-operation for trade and investment. China has expertise in infrastructure development and that is was one area where his country could offer help to Maharashtra, he said. Expressing satisfaction over the measures taken by both countries to promote co-operation, the governor expressed hope that relations between China and India would strengthen further in the years to come.

Maritime awareness is the need of the hour, says MAPS By Vishnudas Sheshrao

T

he Maritime Awareness Programme Society (MAPS) recently requested education boards to introduce maritime studies in the school curriculum considering a majority of people are ignorant about it in spite of it being the backbone of world business. MAPS underlined that maritime activities have always been a very crucial part of business. Yet, most of our country is yet to introduce it in academics and thus MAPS requested concerned authorities to add 'Introduction to the Maritime Industry' as a subject in school syllabus. Sabyasachi Hajara, Chairman, MAPS quoting Efthymois Mitropoulos said, “Without shipping, half the world would freeze and the other half will starve to death”. He added, “'Introduction to the Maritime Industry will be a part of social science. India contributes eight per cent to the total international cargo, yet more than 65 per Navin Passey, Sabyasachi Hijara, Deepak Shetty and A.K. Jain at the seminar.

cent of the countrymen have hardly been exposed to facts related to this”. MAPS also put forth an idea to build a maritime museum in Navi Mumbai. Maritime Association of Shipowners Ship Managers and Agents (MASSA) expressed their willingness to fund this project. Another such project, transformation of IMS Vikrant into a fullfledged museum is in a dead-lock. For over a decade and a half, the state government was mulling over this idea. However, the state government has now suggested scrapping the aircraft carrier which has brought laurels to the country. MAPS was of the opinion that dedicated forums are the need of the hour to spearhead the collaboration with industry experts, veterans and commercial organisations to create awareness about maritime trade and other activities. This awareness will lay the foundation for making maritime industry the key to India’s growth as a global economic power hub.

Congress speaks in the past tense, the AAP in the future tense and the BJP in the present tense

By Prashant Hamine

orn and brought up in Girangaon, the heartland of textile mills in south-central Mumbai in humble surroundings, Ashish Shelar (41) has now completely been transformed into that quintessential Bandra boy, where he now lives. He orginally hails from native Sindhudurg district in Konkan region, and says he has not forgotten his roots either in Konkan or in south-central Mumbai. A Law graduate from Mumbai University in 1995, Shelar cut his teeth in politics through Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Shelar first shot into prominence after becoming a corporator in the BMC in the mid1990s and was noticed for his good knowledge of the law and his oratory skills. It was his performance in the BMC that compelled the party leadership to give him a ticket for the Legislative Council in 2012. He gave proof of his leadership skills by successfully staging the MahaGarjana rally at BKC. Today, he juggles between added responsibility of heading the all-powerful Mumbai City unit of the party and leading it into the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections this year.

Ashish Shelar, Mumbai City BJP unit President

Will you have a separate election manifesto for Mumbai? And what issues would you highlight? The issues highlighted in the national party vision document will find mention in the state and Mumbai election manifesto. In our separate Mumbai-related issues, we will have a separate poll manifesto. Of course, issues like jobs, education, besides inflation, corruption, will be on our agenda. We are in the process of drafting the citizens charter and collecting suggestions from the people so that they can be incorporated in the election manifesto. The Centre and as such, the State government, have not given anything for Mumbai and development works of BMC. Infrastructure projects have been delayed. Promoting business enterprises, women's security, are among the few things that are on the agenda. The main highlight of this year's election campaign will be the various scams committed by the Congress-NCP regime and the Adarsh committee report. Besides targeting the corrupt Congress regime, the party will also target some of the opposition parties as well. Last elections it was the MNS. This time around the challenger seems to be the AAP. What is your response to this new challenge? Any new party contesting elections we shall welcome. We are concerned that our alliance candidates should get massive leads. We shall strive hard and aggressively try to ensure that our traditional votes do not get split. The Congress and MNS are more concerned about the entry of AAP in the poll fray. As I stated earlier, the MNS influence has been on the wane. This time around the disillusioned pro-Congress voter has a choice in the form of the AAP.

Your party has been out of power in the Lok Sabha now for almost a decade. How confident are you that your party will be able to come back to power at the Centre? This time around we are very positive in our approach and are confident that we shall come back to power. The positivity in the party is there for the simple reason that this time around our party organisation is strong, the leadership is not only acceptable but is also strong and visionary. In the last 2009 Lok Sabha elections, you lost all the six Lok Sabha seats of Mumbai. That time you had the MNS factor to contend with. This time it is the AAP that is posing a challenge to your party. It is true that in 2009 Lok Sabha elections we lost all the six seats in Mumbai. Then there were two factors that were responsible for our poor show in the city. The MNS then cast a very strong influence on the voters. Secondly, the RPI-Athavale faction was not with us. Pics: Vishwanath Salian | ADC

But the AAP has declared that its main aim in this election is the BJP Those who want to contest elections or wants to show everybody that they are contesting against the strong opposition, tend to indulge in such acts. BJP alone presents itself as a strong alternative. Are you not worried that the AAP has put some formidable candidates, especially in Mumbai? I do not want to comment on the candidates being fielded by the AAP. Most of the issues that they are raising are non-relevant issues. People are not buying their arguments. The voters go to a leader who has the ability to solve their problems, who has the ability to change their lives for the better. The AAP has based its campaign on negativity. Elections cannot be fought and won on negative approach. In Delhi, they did get a chance to govern however they did not turn This time around the RPI-A is along with us, that into a positive chance. Narendra Modi thus the dalit votes will be on our sides. Be- and the BJP governments in various states sides this, the MNS influence on the elec- have been able to transform the lives of peotorate is on the wane. Besides the social media, we are going to In this elections, the party has coined a new send specially designed Inland Letters to all slogan “Ek Note, Kamal Pe Vote” (One Note, the eligible voters telling them about their Vote for Lotus). adan Pradaan (Give and Take) – a term used for the exchange of criminals between two police stations – which was kickstarted by the newly promoted DG of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and then Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vishwas Nangre Patil, was recently conducted in the absence of the new Additional Commissioner of this jurisdiction. This process which is effectively practiced in the western suburbs usually saw the Additional Commissioner personally visiting BKC Police station where it is carried out. However, the newly promoted Additional Commissioner Milind Bharambhe didn't attend the recent adaan pradaan making it the first such give and take without an additional commissioner. Tree Authority Department asks BMC to map mangroves Pic for representational purposes only

By Khushboo Panjabi

A

fter the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started the system of tree mapping in the city, members of of the Tree Authority Department are now demanding that the corporation initiate a mangrove census as well. According to the 2006 mangrove census – which was the last initiative taken up by the BMC in relation to mangroves – the city has over 5,000 hectares of mangroves along its coastline. However, when BMC officials recently visited beaches across Gorai and Manori, they noted that almost 60 acres of the 440 acres of mangroves in these areas have turned barren. Shubha Raul, Former Mayor, and member of the Tree Authority Department, said, “The BMC has a separate tree authority fund, but due to a policy matter, the civic body is not considering mangroves in the tree census, neither are they util-

ising the fund for their preservation.” S.V.R. Srinivas, Additional Municipal Commissioner, said “The destruction of mangroves will be stopped and strict action will be taken against people who dump debris inside forests.”Raul also added, “I have written a letter to the Indian Forest Service (IFS) chairman N. Vasudevan, Mangroves Cell,

Maharahtra, requesting him to speak with the BMC Commissioner, Environment Minister and Chairman of the Tree Authority of Mumbai, Thane and other megcities to ask them to start looking after the mangroves in their areas, and also utilise the tree authority fund to save the mangroves and stop their destruction.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

wo days after the prosecution closed the Shakti Mill telephone operator gang rape case of July 31, 2013 as it has examined all the witnesses, the Sessions Court on Friday recorded the statements of the accused, during which all the accused denied the charges against them. The prosecution had closed the examination of all witnesses in the case on February 18 and accordingly, the court started recording statements of the accused under section 313 of Criminal Procedure Code on Friday. The prosecution had examined 332 witnesses, including the telephone operator, to strengthen their case and the photo-journalist gang rape case was at the fag end with only 8 to 10 witnesses remaining to be examined, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said. Police had arrested Mo-

hammed Ashfaq Sheikh, Mohamed Kasim Hafiz Sheikh alias Kasim Bangali, Salim Ansari, Vijay Jadhav and a minor for gang rape of the telephone operator and had filed a 362-page chargesheet on October 8 against four accused. The minor's case was separated. While recording the statements of the accused on Friday in an in-camera hearing, Principal Sessions Judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi, put as many as 496 questions to them. “The accused denied all the allegations against them and the court completed recording of the statements of the accused under section 313 of Criminal Procedure Code,” Nikam said.

In another case, a journalist, who was interning with an English magazine, was gang raped by five persons, including a juvenile, when she had gone to the deserted Shakti mill compound with her male colleague on an assignment on August 22, 2013. The accused – Vijay Jadhav, Kasim Bengali, Salim Ansari and Siraj Rehman – have been charged with rape, conspiracy, common intention, unnatural sex and charges under Information Technology Act, while the trial of the juvenile was separated. The Mumbai crime branch had on September 19 filed a charge sheet against the four accused. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

They also learned that in most cases, passengers don’t file complaints. The police then identified the gang and laid a trap at the airport and at the residence of the accused at Chandivali. On Wednesday, when the three accused were trying to trap another traveler at Sahar airport, the Sahar police caught hold of them and handed them to the MIDC police station. They have been sent to police custody till February 28.

hile NCP supremo and Union Agriculture minister, Sharad Pawar, is scheduled to inaugurate the Municipal Sports Complex in Bhayandar (East) on Sunday, the local BJP unit has boycotted the event over alleged irregularities. The Rs. 21 crore indoor stadium mooted and partly funded by Thane MP, Dr. Sanjeev Naik, has been built on a 11,786 sq. mt. playground plot in the New Golden Nest area of Bhayandar (E). Built on international standards, the stadium will house a swimming pool and badminton, basket ball and squash courts. However, the complex is not fully complete, and will be partly operational after the inauguration, thus raising strong opposition from BJP members

who, citing the poor financial health of the civic body, had earlier demanded an immediate halt to construction activities. “It is my duty to ensure that the citizens of this twin-city are not deprived of this much needed sports amenity and I have been striving to complete the project ever since my election,” said, Dr. Naik, who added that the MBMC has issued a part Occupation Certificate, negating the BJP’s charge of the structure being illegal. Apart from Pawar, Dy. Legislative Chairperson, Vasant Davkhare, MoS, Uday Samant, Tribal Minister Rajendra Gavit, Thane guardian minister, Ganesh Naik, legislator, Gilbert Mendonca and Mayor Catlyn Pereira, will attend the ceremony.

Ponder awhile… “Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching.” — Satchel Paige

A big shock T for the Congress party O

NE of the political enemies of the Congress is the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). It tried a ruling experiment with this party: It was a total failure. Rahul Gandhi has been roundly criticising the policies of the Aam Aadmi Party which routed the Congress in Delhi. He would not have naturally liked any association with the AAP. The association of the Congress with the AAP was only a farce. Rahul Gandhi has been claiming that Mahatma Gandhi belonged completely to the Congress. Any party, also like the RSS, which killed Gandhi was an enemy of the Congress. The party basked in the reflected glory of Gandhi who valued above all else truth. What then can the Congress say now when Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson joined the AAP? The Congress would have liked all Gandhi family members to stay away from other parties and strictly stick to the Congress. This, however, has not happened. Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson must have given a big shock to the Congress and its vicepresident Rahul Gandhi when he unexpectedly joined AAP. This event must have been a blessing for the AAP. The Congress must have been dismayed how the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi could have joined a party which had successfully ousted it from the power scenario in Delhi. The Congress leaders of Delhi were accusing the AAP of breaking existing laws, acting against the interest of women and promoting anti-social activities. The AAP is the number one enemy of the Congress. After achieving success in Delhi, AAP is out to defeat the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls. What has Rahul Gandhi to say now, after Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson has joined some other party which is totally against the Congress? He has to face the unpleasant reality that the worst enemy of the Congress has attracted Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson. By joining the AAP, Gandhi’s grandson has shown that he would like to keep miles away from the Congress.

HE Tamil-speaking people of Tamil Nadu always had a soft corner for the LTTE in Sri Lanka who had gone there looking for work. They sympathised with their struggle to have a separate province for themselves. They must have got unexpected surprises when Rajiv Gandhi, who was the prime minister then, decided to send the Indian Army to deal with the Tamils in Sri Lanka. As per an agreement Rajiv Gandhi had with Sri Lanka’s Jayawardene, the Indian Army was sent to help Sri Lankan army to crush the Tamil speaking rebels. Did Rajiv Gandhi send the Indian soldiers to Sri Lanka himself or did he send it on the advice of Brijesh Mishra? Anyway, a big mistake had been done. We should have stayed away from the conflict in Sri Lanka. Why should we have gone all the way to Sri Lanka to kill Tamil-speaking people of Indian origin? I do not have the exact figures but hundreds of the Tamil rebels were killed by our army which also suffered a great deal. Who was responsible for the death of our soldiers and also the slaughter of LTTE rebels? There was great resentment in Tamil Nadu as the killing took place in Sri Lanka. After all, blood is thicker than water... Let us face the truth: When, in revenge, a contingent came from Sri Lanka and killed Rajiv Gandhi, there was not much condemnation in Tamil Nadu. It is now being said by Congress in India it was an act of terror. The Tamil rebels were not terrorists. They were being treated like second-class citizens and finally unable to bear it any longer, perceiving the threat to their very survival, they struck. There is a rejoicing in Tamil Nadu again: the three Sri Lanka’s rebels got a break when the SC said that the accused who had been sentenced to death have suffered enough in jail for 23 years: The court cancelled the death sentence and ordered change the death sentence and awarded a life term, for prisoners waiting in the death row. DMK’s Karunanidhi immediately seized the chance to show the people of Sri Lanka that the SC has done the right thing. He said he was happy the court had ordered their release. Immediately, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa went into action. It would be disastrous if she let Karunanidhi to hog the credit. She announced that all the three accused would be released. Congress leaders objected. Rahul Gandhi said how could his father’s killers get pardon. Nobody mentioned the number of soldiers were killed and also the number of Tamil speaking people — of Indian origin — killed.

EOPLE donate for the blind, give generously towards old age homes and orphanages, but it is difficult having them part so liberally with their money towards charities or NGOs who work for the mentally challenged. I pondered on this as I drove back that evening: I’d seen the sterling work done by the Indian Council for Mental Health, led by Zarir Master, had interviewed parents, even seen the tremendous affection displayed twixt teachers, supportive staff and students. I had noticed smiles on the faces of these children as they went through a session of animal therapy, even laughter and happiness as they finally discovered caring people who finally understood them. I had seen lives being changed, but I drove home puzzled. Puzzled that the world’s purse strings were closed or grudgingly opened: That when it came to giving for these unfortunate children, most seemed reluctant.

Both Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa have done their duty. For them it is a political question now is to win over people of Tamil Nadu who have great sympathy for the Tamil speaking Sri Lanka. ROUND-UP A.R. Kanangi Hazare has been waging war against corruption for years. Anna said he would support all Trinamool Congress candidates for Lok Sabha elections. It is evident that Mamata and Anna have a joint programme to capture power at the centre. Mamata Banerjee says that the Third Front plan has failed. It is a fact there is no sign of any Third Front. Chief ministers of many states have been toying with the idea of forming a Third Front — an alternative to the two national parties to the Congress and BJP. It is not difficult to see why the move never took off. One of the main reasons perhaps was a lack of agreement with regard to the choice of the prime minister nominee. They all want to become the prime minister: Jayalalithaa, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati, Navin Patnaik... A consensus could not be arrived at and maybe because of this, the plan was abandoned. In fact, the Third Front idea was buried long ago. Before election a customary effort was being made to dig it out without success. Tamil Nadu chief minister who seems to have

successfully undergone a slimming process, is once again at it. Now she has not joined with regional parties but with a national party — the Communist Party of India. That party must have given her an assurance that she would be the prime minister. And Mamata Banerjee appears to have dropped the idea of Third Front completely and opted for a Federal Front. The prime minister, she says, would be selected after the elections. She is likely to get large-scale support from people inWest Bengal. Despite some of her failings, Mamata continues to be popular. What she perhaps wants to do is to get support from all the regions of the country — not from regional governments, but directly from people. Mamata Banerjee to whom Anna Hazare is like a father figure, appears to think that her idea will gain ground. Anna Hazare’s war against corruption is well known throughout the country. He regards the Congress as the worst corrupt party and he is all set to see that the Congress is defeated. He has shown that he is quite interested in playing a role in the AprilMay Lok Sabha elections. He has always been a crusader against corruption. Mamata has found a sincere and simple leader who is also a crusader against corruption. Has Anna Hazare changed his views about politics and power? He was unhappy when Arvind Kejriwal decided to stand for elections in Delhi with a view to forming government. His one-track objective was fight corruption and he wanted Kejriwal also to have similar views — and make attempts to capture power. He almost said a thing or two against Kejriwal’s bid to get power. And he warned Kejriwal not to misuse his name. Now, Anna Hazare himself appears to be taking to politics. Did he perhaps realise that he could not fight corruption without being in the government? Now he is supporting Mamata Banerjee to form a Federal Front and win Lok Sabha elections. Will he make an impact and help Federal Front to win? It is a fact that people regard him as a clean person — thanks to his fight for the Janlokpal, his successful fast in Delhi and becuase of wide coverage of the event in TV channels. He is now known throughout the country. And Mamata Bannerjee evidently needs moral support. She can survive in West Bengal and keep the Communists at bay, but fighting for Lok Sabha seats on an all-India level is no easy talk. She thinks evidently Anna Hazare can provide the moral boost needed to influence people across the country and gain in Lok Sabha elections. the father pick the child from its mother’s arms. He held the baby with deep affection, gently rocked the child and lil’ baby stopped crying; there was a smile on everyone’s face at that bus stop. And then I saw another baby in my mind’s eye: He was fourteen, looked adult: He cried, he threw his adult arms in childish tantrum, and people looked away hurriedly. “No!” I cried as my driver looked at me in surprise, “Don’t look away, that’s a baby!” “Who sir?” he asked. “All those children we saw today; each one of them is a child in an adult’s body!” I looked back at the father gently rubbing his baby’s back, I watched the mother looking lovingly at her child, and I realised what needed to be told to society in general, before they look away from a child who is mentally challenged, “Open your eyes sir, look deep inside: Do you see the child inside?” — bobsbanter@gmail.com

MUMBAI | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2014

Jayalalithaa’s vote bank politics TAMIL Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha has created a new stir and controversy by ordering the release of Rajiv Gandhi's assassins. The Supreme Court, however, has rightly intervened and stalled her orders, as such a move would have sent wrong signals to future convicts. Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of our country, and whether his killers or others like them be pardoned or let off for their crime, is a controversial subject. I personally feel that they should not be freed. Jayalalitha is an opportunistic politician and is known to do anything to secure a vote bank. A Chief Minister should not have any such discretionary powers, as it can be misused. Such powers should rest only with the Supreme Court of the country. The death penalty is an apt punishment for killers, as it acts as a lesson for other convicts. The law should be equal for all and the SC should spell out its decision clearly so that there is no debate or discussion on the subject in the future.

Secular way out

Traditional corruption

POLITICAL GAME: Jayalaithaa's urgency in setting Rajiv Gandhi's assassins free is a clear indication that she is engaging in vote bank politics for her selfish gains.

ist, Bertolt Brecht (1898-1947) had once said, 'It is easier to rob by setting up a bank than by holding up a bank clerk'. This reminds me of famous American journalist Napoleon Hill, who once suggested that an easy way of building capital is by using other people's OF money. It was, as I believe, LETTER THE DAY a good suggestion, but in a context. In our case, it has been misused by uncouth swindlers, who virtually follow this rule without any ethics. They build up funds by asking for investments from the general public, and then squander the funds shamelessly and brazenly. The hard earned money invested with uncouth financial bodies by the gullible public is not promptly turned over to investors. What happens to the poor people who have been robbed by such uncouth handlers? — P. Chakravorty, Fort

WHEN the question of granting parole to a convict or a suspect arises, the Maharashtra government always prefers to adopt a devoutly secular way. Whereas a Bollywood celebrity from the former category gets parole as and when he wants, this facility is flatly denied to the a suspected saffron terrorist who is under investigation by the NIA; even though the person has been diagnosed as suffering from cancer and requiring urgent medical attention like hospitalization. Another 'shining' example is that of Kasaab, who was provided with special food while in jail during the month of Ramzan, so as to impress upon the outside world the sacrosanct Indian principle of 'sarva dharma sama bhav'. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

Where's the NaMo wave? ISN'T it ironical that BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is improving his goodwill abroad, but fails to increase his alliance partners in the NDA. A goodwill gesture might not fetch him 272 Lok Sabha seats to form the government in 2014, but a few, not as powerful as the US, alliances may win him the day. The other thing about the BJP that sounds absurd is their cry that every move of their opponent, is a ploy to stop NaMo from becoming the PM. In Kejriwal they see a Congress agent out to divide voters and topple the BJP's dream of forming the next government. They even see the formation of the third front as a threat. What kind of NaMo wave is the BJP then speaking about? A true wave smashes everything that comes in its way and does not grumble about small trees and bushes posing as hurdles.

on the killers' release. Many in Tamil Nadu sympathise with the Eelam cause, but to stretch that to sympathizing with those who conspired to assassinate an Indian prime minister is unacceptable. The urgent need of the hour is that the Congress government at the Centre, must challenge the order of the Tamil Nadu chief minister in the Supreme Court, as she is playing dirty politics for her selfish poltical gains. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

APROPOS 'Corruption in BMC building proposals dept.' (ADC, Feb 20), I cannot agree more with the ADC edit piece revealing the most corrupt department of the BMC. Over the years, the unabated corruption is witnessed by hapless builders, particularly by those who are not financially very strong. Of late, however, another alarming bit of news that I have heard from a practicing architect is that even designs are approved by structural engineers of one of India's prime technical institutions, by graft only. The top brass should immediately start investigating the wrong doings of the department and ensure that builders get the approval/sanction of building plans as stipulated in the BMC procedure, without bribing officials. The immediate rectification of such a rotten system is only possible if the highest offices take up the matter on a war footing. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

Taste of the nation AFTER his resignation, Kejriwal had said in his interview that he will reside at his current residence as per government rules. His daughter’s examinations are around the corner, and if he cannot arrange for an alternative residence, he will pay market rent to the government for his current accommodation. Although his way of functioning seems to coincide with the common man’s way, Kejriwal's behaviour has not revealedhis care for the common man. Dhoni needs to be replaced THIS refers to two reports 'Defensive Dhoni left defenceless' and 'Time has come to look beyond 'defensive' Dhoni': Amarnath' (ADC, February 20), which say it all very clearly. To his credit, it needs to be conceded that Dhoni has been reasonably consistent in his batting and has played some cavalier innings in an attempt to save matches, and his keeping has also been good. However, the bitter truth is that he is a defensive captain, who does not have a game plan to contain the opposition, and stands behind the stumps as just one of the fielders without taking the match in his hands and going for the kill. He remains too passive and does not give the impression of a captain who has got a job to do. He also does not communicate well with his men. Unlike the ODIs, there are no field restrictions in the tests, and so one wonders what prevents him from going in for an aggressive field setting. It will therefore be best to relieve him from captaincy and

WHEN a cricket captain performs well at the highest level, ex-cricketers shower praise on the skipper and hype his captaincy skill. But when he fails to achieve the desired result, especially on a foreign tour, then the brickbats start flowing. Dhoni is suffering the same fate after successive defeats in England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. The fact that we could not achieve a series win in South Africa or Australia, after playing test cricket for more than 80 years, shows where our weakness lies. That we are tigers at home and lambs abroad is proved beyond a doubt and there is no excuse for our debacles. Dhoni is now being attacked by ex-players who are talking about his obnoxious way of handling the side, while some are calling for different captains to lead us in different formats. P It’s a story of modest men, told with a refreshing lack of melodrama, but with period details recreated with care. The film is based on Robert Edsel’s book about eight men, who saved billions worth of art treasures stolen from museums, churches, galleries and private collectors with the idea of building a grand museum in Hitler’s honour. The story of saving art works has been told once before in John Frankenheimer’s The Train (1964) with Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield and Jeanne Moreau, which went for speed and thrills, while Clooney’s film is almost serene in comparison, in spite of its wartime setting. There are little triumphs and tragedies that affect only this small bunch. Who will even remember 30 years later, Stokes is asked, and the film attempts an answer. Veera tries to run, but can’t find a way out of the vast void—but no building of tension, no throb of a love story unfolding, even an unlikely one. Not much for the viewer to hold on to or invest in the fates of Veera and Mahavir. Ali tries to strip the film of typical Bollywood elements (like group dances) and there’s realistic grime even amidst spectacular scenic beauty, but he can’t rid it of its marzipan heart— the age old poor boy, rich girl romance that tries too hard not to be Roman Holiday. Alia Bhatt’s performance makes Highway bearable—she throws herself into the part with sincerity, and in spite of the cuteness written into it, does not make Veera cloying. Randeep Hooda just practices his scowl throughout, but that’s the role he is given, and it helps that he is the typical tall, dark, handsome hunk. In the real world, a kidnapper would not be so huggable. But what a perfect male fantasy it is for every tapori in the audience, just kidnap a pretty rich girl and she is willing to be your slave. Every time men in the audience laughed when Mahavir growled at Veera, the women must have winced.

robably the last time you saw 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was when it was released in 1982 at the theatres. Over thirty years later, the film still brings you action and adventure to relive again on DVD. With memorable music by John Williams, the action scenes are spectacular, and cinematography something to watch out for, it is no wonder then that 'Raiders' is regarded as a classic for it still remains in the public's eye for years to come. Set in South America in 1936 (ahead of the surge of power by the Nazis), Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is an archaeology professor who moonlights as an explorer of sorts, hunting for historical artifacts. Indy’s latest quest comes to find him seeking out The Lost Ark of the Covenant, the sacred chest containing the Ten Commandments and other hallowed items. Indy takes on the job after he finds that the Nazis are already in Cairo looking for the chest. Dr. Rene Belloq (Paul Freeman) is also on the trail of the Ark and is in league with the Nazis. Getting a society’s accounts verified, audited legally

ONLY A TRUE OWNER CAN LEGALLY DISPOSSESS A TRESPASSER

Picture for representational purpose only

FOR the record, it is a settled rule that a ‘true’ owner has the right to dispossess or throw out a trespasser. That, however, can happen only while the trespasser is in the midst of his act or process of trespassing and hasn’t accomplished his possession. By law, if the trespasser has successfully accomplished his possession, the law maintains that the true owner dispossess the trespasser by taking legal recourse. The right of an owner to dispossess a trespasser was laid down in Ram Rattan vs. the State of U.P., by the Supreme Court. In what seems to be a legal oddity, if a trespasser has succeeded in obtaining wrongful possession of the property vested in the public

for common enjoyment, a member of the public is prevented from trying to secure public property from the possession of the trespasser except by due process of law. In the said case, the trespasser had encroached upon a public road in the village that was disputed and had converted it into cultivable field and grown paddy crop. The true owner and another got involved in an armed conflict with the trespasser resulting into the death of the trespasser and injuries to some of witnesses. The court held the accused were not entitled to claim the right of private defence nor attribute their assault on the deceased as an excess of their right of private defence of property. When a complaint was filed before the Panchayat, the accused should have allowed the law to take its course instead of taking law in their hands by making an armed trespass into the property. The Supreme Court observed the facts of the case do raise some amount of sympathy for the accused who was really trying to assert his lawful rights against the trespasser. Although he was fighting for a just and righteous cause, it was not in a strictly lawful manner. The accused, if successful, would have been able to secure the right over the chak road left by the revenue authorities for the benefit of the villagers. These considerations may weigh with the government for considering the question of remitting a portion of the sentence imposed on the accused. Queries may be mailed to gajanan@draftcraft.in

How does one get a society’s accounts verified and audited? — Sarika Walke

Every cooperative housing society should have their books of accounts audited at least once every cooperative year. Auditing is the verification and examination of books of accounts regularly audited by a statutory auditor. The Registrar of societies also has the right to enforce additional audits at any time of the year according to his discretion. Housing societies can approach an auditor from the panel of auditors maintained by the Registrar or by a chartered accountant who holds a certificate in cooperative audit issued by the institute of Chartered Accountants in India. An audit generally includes the examination and verification of the following points: Overdue of debts, if any; Cash balance and securities valuation of the assets and liabilities of the society; Whether loan, advances and debts made by the society on the basis of security have been properly secured and the terms on which such loans or debts are incurred are not pre-judicial to the interest of the society and its members; Whether the transactions of the society which are presented merely as book entries are not pre-judicial to the interest of the society; Whether personal expenses have been charged to the revenue account; Whether the society has incurred any expenditure in furtherance of its objects; Whether the Managing Committee is taking proper care to deposit the share money collected from the members specified securities or long term deposits as specified in the Bye-laws. Whether the Cash on hand is exceeding the limits prescribed in the Bye-Law number 143. While it is necessary for the society to maintain a minimum cash balance, the treasurer or secretary should always deposit additional cash into the bank. The Registrar may on his own or on the urging of interested parties depute a ‘flying squad’ to examine the books, records, accounts and any other society papers to verify the society’s cash balance. During this period, the Registrar or an officer deputed by him can ask any person who is or has been at any time an officer or employee of the society or any past or present member of the society to furbish information regarding the transactions and working of the society. If during the course of an audit, the auditor believes that some books of accounts or other documents contain any incriminatory evidence against past or present officers or employees of the society, the auditor can immediately report the matter to the Registrar. The auditor can also, with previous permission from the Registrar, impound the books or documents after giving a receipt thereof to the society.

LEGAL QUERIES

Just like buyers take care before buying a property, financial institutions such as banks too take the same amount of care, when investigating the title of the property they are considering for mortgage. the disbursement of a bank loan indication that the property’s title is clear? — Abdul Hamid

Just like buyers take tremendous care before buying a property, financial institutions such as banks too take the same amount of care, when investigating the title of the property they are considering for mortgage. In the course of their appraisal, they are not likely to accept copies of title deeds believing rightly that they may not actually be the document of title. The only exception being situations in which the original has been destroyed or irretrievably lost and is no longer in existence. Even in these extreme situations, they are likely to accept only certified copies of the title deeds issued by the Registrar of Assurances where there is conclusive proof that the originals have been destroyed or irreversibly lost. Keeping in mind the government’s rights over the mortgage in the bank’s favour in the event of the borrower keeping the land revenue or other public dues in arrears, bank officials ensure that everything is free of any irregularities. They will make sure that the land revenue and municipal taxes due on the immovable property have been paid until date and also future dues are paid promptly. To avoid any claim of priority under section 295 of the Income Tax Act, they will also make sure that there are no outstanding tax dues. Advocates and solicitors may also be asked to make sure that the documents Can a bank consider a property that’s of title are complete in all respects and under legal contention for mortgage? Is that documents convey a clear, absolute

CLEAR TITLE NEEDED FOR MORTGAGE TOO!

and marketable title to the property. Bank officials will make sure that the property offered as security to the bank is unencumbered and unattached. They will make sure that the persons seeking to secure the property to the bank have a clear and marketable title to it and are legally capable of creating a charge on it in favour of the bank. If the said property is subject to tenancy laws, it will affect the bank’s right eventually to take possession or to be sold or any other rights that they can exercise in the future, so checks on this scenario will also be carried out. Besides this, financial institutions are also likely to carry out searches among records with the Sub-registrar of Assurances, Collector and / or other revenue authorities to ascertain whether there is any outstanding mortgage or charge on the property to be mortgaged to the bank. There are a number of fraudsters that are constantly doing the rounds and banks routinely examine documents to verify their authenticity to make sure that they have not been provided with forged title deeds. There are a number of additional checks that financial institutions carry out such as verifying the schedule of the property, where it is situated and its registration with the sub-registrar’s office. Next they may also verify the consideration paid in the document, authenticate the stamp duty affixed on the said document plus examine the security marks on the paper which are visible only on a close examination. If the stamp paper is mutilated in any manner, they are quite likely to get suspicious.

LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Work seems to be satisfactory but friendships are the problem area. A friend or a close associate may get in touch for help with personal problem. You may be upset with this person. Forget the past and try to help. You will end up feeling very happy with yourself. You will get busy handling other peoples’ problems. This will not only give a sense of satisfaction but will endear you to others.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): There is a tendency to be more sensitive than usual. Keep cool. A reaction is just what you should avoid in the interest of everyone. It would be better if you could maintain cordial relationships with colleagues and friends for it will be with their help and assistance you will succeed. Your ego could get bruised today because you may over step the mark with a little social flirting. A reaction is just what you should avoid in the interest of all.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You seem to be having a great time enjoying your recent success and in the process neglecting your routine work. You can ill afford to neglect your work for there is a strong opponent waiting to occupy your place. A hectic schedule will leave you exhausted with fatigue. A special gesture or favor that you make will make you feel very good about a close relationship that may have suffered earlier.

CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Try not to get emotional about decisions that have to be made. Your abilities to manage all kinds of situations will be put to test today. Balance and harmony is what you always strive for and that is precisely what is missing from your life. You will find your strength soon. Emotions fly high in your associations with loved ones but you have to be the one to put things in their right perspective and defuse a volatile situation.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Keep yourself open to new ideas and suggestion from those who have your interest at heart. You are bound to progress given your ambition and desire. But move step by step and your goals will appear to be closer and more achievable. Property issues are favorable. You will travel with your mate to a place of religious or spiritual interest. You feel recharged and exultant with the experience.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Uncertainties prevent you from taking any decision. But continue to put in efforts which will bring monetary rewards at a later stage. You will have work against all kinds of odds to maintain your current relationship. Do not make drastic decisions you may regret later. Try to be understanding of others responsibilities.

IN BRIEF Chemplast to take on CAG in final today at Wankhede Stadium

CAG overwhelmed Madras Rubber Factory and State Bank of Travancore in their first two Group B league games held at Nagpur and then edged past Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in the last pool game before shocking last year’s finalists India Cements in the semi final held at the MCA’s BKC ground here. Judge indicts Barca over alleged tax fraud regarding Neymar

MADRID: A judge indicted Spanish football champions Barcelona over alleged tax crimes linked to their signing of Brazilian star striker Neymar. Prosecutors accuse Barcelona, who currently have a narrow lead at the top of the Spanish league, of irregularities in the 86-million-euro (USD 118 million) deal — charges which the club denies. Judge Pablo Ruz at Madrid’s National Court indicted the club after seeing “sufficient evidence to investigate a possible crime against the public treasury”, he said in a written ruling. The judge ordered tax authorities to hand over the club’s tax returns for 2011 to 2013. He sought to establish whether or not Neymar, who joined Barcelona in May 2013, was counted as a taxpayer in Spain or his native Brazil that year. The judge also asked tax authorities to provide information about the taxing of deals linked to Neymar’s signing and about how much may have been “defrauded”. He ordered Neymar’s father, Neymar da Silva Santos, to hand over documents from various companies linked to the signing.

EW DELHI: This season’s Indian Premier League is likely to be shifted out of India after the government today made it clear that it would not be able to provide adequate security to the cash-rich T20 tournament as its dates clash with general elections. “Due to general elections, it will be difficult to provide adequate security to IPL matches,” Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told reporters here.

MUMBAI | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2014

Sources said the Home Ministry has conveyed to the BCCI that it would be able to provide adequate security personnel only after the general elections which are expected to be over by mid-May. IPL matches are likely be held between April 9 and June 3. The BCCI’s Working Committee will meet on February 28 in Bhubaneswar where a final decision on the IPL venue is expected to be taken. The Board Secretary Sanjay

Patel had earlier indicated that the first part of the IPL may be held in South Africa while the later stage matches are played in Indian venues after the general elections are over, possibly by mid May. Patel had said that the Board also had a few other options avalaible but did not disclose them. More than 1.20 lakh central paramilitary force personnel, in addition to state police forces, are

expected to be deployed for the multi-phased Lok Sabha polls which are likely to be held in April-May. The sources said that the Home Ministry has started preparing for the massive exercise of mobilising 1.2 lakh personnel from different paramilitary forces to be deployed for poll duties. Paramilitary forces are also deployed in Naxal-affected states, Jammu and Kashmir and the north eastern states.

Somdev walks into semis, Ankita goes down fighting N

EW DELHI: Somdev Devvarman reached the singles semifinal of the ONGC-GAIL Delhi Open after Ze Zhang retired mid-way due to a shoulder injury even as Ankita Raina waged a brave fight before bowing out of the women’s ITF event. Somdev had pocketed the first set 6-2 when Zhang’s shoulder did not let him continue, sending

Somdev into his third consecutive semifinal. He had also reached the semifinals of Chennai and Kolkata events. In the women’s singles quarterfinals, India’s number one player Ankita Raina put up a spirited fight against third seed Yulia Beygelzimer from Ukraine as she saved three match points before losing 3-6 5-7 in two hours and

five minutes on court number one. Ankita did not lack in effort but had an experienced rival, currently ranked 180 but once world number 83, who was well attuned to play according to situation. Parnell swings match South Africa’s way P

ORT ELIZABETH: AB de Villiers and JP Duminy hit centuries and Wayne Parnell took two wickets with his first three balls as South Africa put Australia under pressure on the second day of the second Test at St George's Park today. Australia were 112 for four in Port Elizabeth at the close in reply to South Africa's first innings total of 423. De Villiers (116) and Duminy (123) posted a sixth wicket partnership of 149 as Australia conceded a total of 400 or more for the first time in 13 Test matches. De Villiers continued his prolific run-scoring form as he notched his 19th Test century, while Duminy ended a string of low scores to record his third Test hundred. It was De Villiers' sixth century during a record sequence

of 12 Test matches in which he has scored a half-century or better and never been dismissed for under double figures. Vernon Philander struck early in the Australian innings when he trapped Chris Rogers leg before wicket for five - the third successive single figure score by the lefthanded opener. Fellow opener David Warner counter-attacked but Parnell plunged Australia into trouble. Playing on his home ground in his first Test match in four years, he had Alex Doolan and Shaun Marsh caught behind with his first and third deliveries. Warner was dropped on 43 when Morne Morkel got a ball to lift sharply and Warner edged it high to De Villiers' left. But South Africa struck again when Philander returned for his second spell and had Australian captain

Michael Clarke caught at cover for 19. Warner finished the day with 65 not out off 67 balls and nightwatchman Nathan Lyon was 12 not out. But South Africa failed to ask for a review when Lyon edged the ball down the legside off Dale Steyn in the penultimate over and he was dropped at gully by Duminy off Parnell in the last over of the day. De Villiers and Duminy saw off the second new ball at the start of an extended morning's play during which 109 runs were scored off 34 overs. Duminy, who had scored only 77 runs in his previous seven Test innings, was particularly impressive early on, hitting three boundaries in one over from Mitchell Johnson, whose pace was again negated by a slow pitch with even bounce.

Speed King, Shivalik Storm and Nesto should also run well in the race which offers nearly a crore as stake money. In one race, War Command and Shivalik Storm were close behind Be Safe. For the contest, put these two horses behind Be Safe. There is likely to be a big crowd today -- just a little less than the Derby crowd. BCCI likely to take stock of India’s overseas performance

N

EW DELHI: The BCCI is likely to summon under-fire captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher for a meeting to take stock of the Indian cricket team's disastrous overseas record in the last three years. Top BCCI sources said that the top brass wants to review the performance of the team after their ignominious tour of New Zealand where they lost both the Test and ODI series. It is learnt that the BCCI top brass "wants to review the team's performance away from home and probably discuss with them ways to improve the its overseas record". The matter is also set to come up for discussion during the Board's working committee meeting in Bhubaneswar on February 28. Dhoni and Fletcher have come under the scanner after India's fourth consecutive series defeats abroad and have become subjects of intense criticism from former players as well as the media, with Sourav

Ganguly going to the extent of terming the 32-year-old's captaincy as "obnoxious". However, former cricketers like Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Syed Kirmani felt that the embattled skipper can be retained for some more time. The Dhoni-Fletcher combination started from India's disastrous tour of England in 2011 when they were whitewashed 0-4. That was followed by another similar thrashing in a four-match series in Australia in 2011-12. India's overseas blues came back to haunt the team as they suffered series defeats in South Africa and New Zealand by 0-1 margins, prompting the cricket fraternity to criticise the skipper and coach. But it was also learnt that the board is likely to keep the faith on the duo for the time being. Fletcher's overseas record shows 10 defeats in 15 matches and the Zimbabwean's contract ends in March end this year.

India will miss Dhoni’s experience in Asia Cup: Misbah

L

AHORE: Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq today said that India will miss the experience of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the upcoming Asia Cup, but insisted his side will not be taking the World Champions lightly as they remain a strong unit without their regular skipper. "They will miss his experience and captaincy but Virat Kohli is a suitable replacement and India remains a strong challenge in the tournament," Misbah told reporters at the Gaddafi stadium. "But India apart, I say again and again that all the teams in the Asia Cup remain strong challengers for the title," he said. Dhoni was today ruled out of the Asia Cup yesterday due to a sidestrain injury that he suffered during the second Test in New Zealand,

paving the way for Virat Kohli to lead the side. Misbah said that the players' confidence was high after recent performances in the One-dayers. "Pakistan obviously goes into the competition with a winning momentum and having won the oneday series against South Africa and Sri Lanka we are confident that we can also beat India," he said. "We have done well in recent series and we have a good combination for one-day cricket even though we will miss Muhammad Irfan in such a major competition." "Conditions are similar for all the teams but we have a good bowling attack and that is our strongest point but obviously the batsmen have to support them with good scores," he added.

HINT OF ASSCANDAL IN SOCHI

24

SPORTS

OCHI: The scent of scandal lingered over the Sochi Olympics on Friday after contentious judging favoured an unfancied Russian over South Korea's Kim Yuna in the women's figure skating contest, and a test produced the first suspect blood sample of the Games. As Russia's first Winter Olympics headed into the final weekend, the host nation rejoiced after snatching the coveted figure skating title for the first time late on Thursday. Adelina Sotnikova, who few had expected to be among the medals before the competition began, eclipsed overwhelming favourite Kim despite the defending champion producing a stirring performance that many viewers had deemed to be enough. The controversy rumbled on into Friday, when South Koreans expressed shock and anger at a decision they said had been engineered to favour the Russians. More than 800,000 people signed an online petition demanding an inquiry into Kim's loss, which many in the country of 50 million people stayed up into the early hours to watch. "Queen Yuna" is South Korea's most loved and best-known athlete.

It was not only South Koreans who doubted the outcome. "I am stunned by this result, I don't understand the scoring," Katarina Witt, the 1984 and 1988 champion, was heard commentating on German TV from her booth at the venue. Russian television and radio stations lionised their 17-year-old champion on Friday, although the Sovietsky Sport newspaper referred to the scandal with the headline: "American media cast doubt over Adelina Sotnikova's victory". Its columnist gave his own analysis as to why the result should not be called into question. In another controversy, the German Olympic Committee announced that an unnamed athlete had returned an abnormal doping sample at the Sochi Games and a second sample would be tested later on Friday to determine the presence of banned substances. So far no athlete has tested positive for banned drugs at Russia's first Winter Olympics, with the IOC eager to stop cheats from getting to the Games with increased testing in the months leading up to the event.

Confident India take on England in quarters of U-19 WC

DUBAI: Having won all their group stage matches convincingly, defending champions India will have a slight edge when they lock horns with England in the quarterfinals of the Under-19 World Cup here today. In-form India had notched up a mammoth 245-run win over New Papua Guinea in their last round-robin match to top group A and having posted 300-plus runs on a difficult batting wicket, the Vijay Zolcaptained side will fancy its chances at the Dubai International Stadium. India's victory margin was the seventh-biggest in the history of youth ODIs. England, though, will not be an easy meat as they also have proven players in their ranks, and who have impressed in the tournament. The Indians kickstarted their campaign with a 40-run victory over arch-rivals Pakistan. They struggled a bit against Scotland before pulling off a five-wicket win in their second match. The holders roared back to form with a thrashing of New Papua Ginuea on a Sharjah track that was not one of the best for batting. Leading the side, Zol has been having a decent outing, but the batsman to look out for in their last eight match will be Sanju Samson. The 19-year-old, who plays for Rajasthan Royals in the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL), had smashed his way to a 48-ball 85 against the hapless Papua New Guinea, giving enough indications about what the batsman is capable of when in form.

IN BRIEF Keep the politicians out of sports: Rahul Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi threw his weight behind keeping politicians out of sports bodies in the country and said sportspersons themselves should be at the helm of affairs. "When you are talking about sports and how to make it accessible, then more and more powers should go the sports people when deciding things about sports in the country," Gandhi said at the launch of 'National Youth Policy 2014' and 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan' here. "I think that's the crux of it. Keep the politicians out of sports if you want to put it directly." Rahul said it is similar to empowering common man to help change politics in the country. "The same applies to politics. If you want to change the politics in the country, give more and more power to young people, give more power to the common man and you change the politics," Gandhi added.

Dilshan in doubt for Asia Cup

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's veteran batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan is in doubt for the upcoming Asia Cup after picking up a finger injury which has ruled him out of the rest of the ongoing series against Bangladesh. "He would return home today," Sri Lanka Cricket announced. He may miss the Asia Cup tournament also to be played in Bangladesh from February 25 as the selectors would not want to risk him ahead of the World T20 also to be held in Bangladesh from March 16. The left-handed middle-order batsman Lahiru Thirimanna would replace Dilshan for the Bangladesh tour. Dilshan hurt his finger in the second ODI which Sri Lanka won yesterday to clinch the series. Chopra puts Ahmedabad into final M

UMBAI: Vikrant Chopra pulled a rabbit out of the hat to help Navratna Ahmedabad edge out Krrish Colombo 2-1 in a nail-biting semi-final contest of the 3rd Louis Philippe Cup at the par-70 Bombay Presidency Golf Club, Chembur on Friday. In Saturday’s final, Navratna will take on Puravankara Bangalore, who comfortably defeated AVT Kolkata 3-0 in the other semi-final. The second semi-final, between Ahmedabad and Colombo, boiled down to an edge-of-theseat affair as the scores were level at 1-all and the third singles tantalising poised as Sri Lankan golfer K. Prabagaran, who trailed by two shots going into the final hole, fired an eagle to bridge the gap to put pressure on Chopra. However, the 34-year-old Chopra showed nerves of steel as he responded with a timely birdie to clinch the issue 71-72 in favour of the Ahmedabad team and give them another shot at the title. But Sri Lanka’s Mithun Perera played steadily to finish with a score of 1-over 71 to win the second singles against N. Thangaraja who had a card of 2-over 72, and put Ahmedabad on level terms.

A relieved Chopra was thrilled after snatching the close win. “It’s excellent to pull a win on the final hole. He (Prabagaran) made an eagle with a good second shot. But I was fortunate to make a birdie with a slick 25-feet putt to win,” he said with a huge smile on his face and clutching onto the putter. Earlier, the Bangalore team were in total control as their rivals AVT Kolkata, including Rahil Gangjee, struggled to find their rhythm.
