City bids adieu to Simon Cardinal Pimenta By A Staff Reporter
T
housands of mourners, including school and college students, congregated at the Cathedral of Holy Name in South Mumbai, inspite of heavy rains, as the city laid to rest Simon Ignatius Cardinal Pimenta, Archbishop of Mumbai from 1978 to 1996. The Missa Coram Corpore (celebration of the Eucharist in the presence of the body of the late Cardinal) was held at the Cathedral amidst a crowd of people from various Christian denominations. The actual funeral Mass which took place later in the afternoon at the Cardinal’s home parish, St. John the Evangelist Church in Marol. This was followed by burial in the Marol cemetery, itself a kind of departure from the normal practice which would have been to inter him in the Holy Name Cathedral. It is thought that perhaps the departure from the norm may have followed the Cardinal’s own wishes. The late Cardinal body was was clad in the rochet, scarlet garments which include the cassock, mozzetta and biretta. He was holding a chalice symbolizing his dedication to the Eucharist as a priest. The mortal remains were kept in the Cathedral for the faithful to pay their respects from 10am. Children from the neighboring schools came in to pay homage to the man who succeeded the late Valerian cardinal Gracias as the Archbishop of Bombay, lining up in orderly fashion to file past the bier. Outside in the pouring rain large numbers of people patiently waited their turn. While the laity paid their respects to the Cardinal, prayers were recited, the choir sang

The body of the late Cardinal was later taken to his first to his ancestral home and then to his home parish, St. John the Evangelist Church at Marol, for funeral. Cardinal Pimenta served in various capacities as secretary to Cardinal Gracias, who was Archbishop of Bombay from 1950 to 1978. He acted as vice-chancellor, parish priest of the cathedral, professor of liturgy, vicar for the formation of priests, rector of St. Pius X Seminary, and in the diocesan marriage office as defender of the bond. In 1971, he was consecrated as auxiliary bishop of Bombay, and in 1977 was appointed coadjutor archbishop. When Cardinal Gracias died the following year, Cardinal Pimenta succeeded him as archbishop of Bombay. He was appointed by the late Pope John Paul II in 1988, when he was given the titular Church of Saint Mary, Queen of the World. It is best to face east or west while eating. Grand testimony to Maharashtra
or all those from Maharashtra who have never been to Lutyens Delhi or plan to visit the nations capital, a cursory glance at the 143-page grand glossy coffee table book brought out by Ms K S Chamankar Enterprises is a reader’s delight. Built at an estimated cost of about Rs 100 crores, the opulent new Maharashtra Sadan is an outcome of painstaking study of centuries old architectural styles used in princely havelis of Pune, Satara, Nashik and even those from Indore. The book, divided into five segments, deals with the culture of havelis, the political legacy of the state, and its contribution to nation building. The pictures of the edifice, constructed in Dholpuri reddish coloured stone, gives one a glimpse of the architecture of the Maharashtra Sadan, which rivals any princely palace. There are magnificent and intricately carved grand statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the front portico which has a garden and a fountain. Statues of great leaders of Maharashtra, like Babasaheb Ambedkar, Shahu Maharaj and Yashwantrao Chavan are also installed on the premises. Besides pictures of great social reformers that the state has given to the nation, the book also acquaints the reader of the rich cultural and spiritual legacy that the state has to offer in terms of pictures of Saints Dyaneshwar, Tukaram and social reformers like Mahatma Phule and others. The Sadan is spread over six acres and has 138 rooms for Chief Minister, Governor, Ministers, Secretaries, MPs, MLAs, Library, Museum, Auditorium and Press Enclave.

is always a cause for concern, particularly in the rainy season, as heavy showers during the high tide period inevitably cause water logging, affecting road and rail traffic. According to the metrological department, Colaba recorded 84 mm rainfall, while Santacruz recorded 142 mm in 12 hours from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm. Four out of six dams that provide drinking water to the city are already overflowing. Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar and Tulsi lake are overflowing. Upper Vaitarna is close to the overflowing mark. Officials say that if it rains for a day or two in the catchment area, this dam will soon overflow. However, the Bhatsa, which provides a major share of water to the city, has a long way to go. A total stock of 10.66 lakh million litres has been recorded in all reservoirs providing water to the city, as against the total requirement of 12.5 lakh million litres. n a strange case, 24-year-old Murshid Alam killed a 26-year-old destitute person near the Rajeev Gandhi Udyan Bridge in Juhu on Tuesday morning. Alam is mentally ill and had been staying beneath the bridge since the last few months. According to officials from Juhu Police station, “This case is a first for us. We are still unsure about the identity of the victim and it took us nearly ten hours to procure details about Alam,
who is mentally unstable. Alam could not remember the events clearly nor did he remember his own identity.” “After killing his colleague, Alam sat besides the corpse and continued to abuse the dead man. A beggar, Nisar Sayyed, who used to stay nearby, called us,” informed police sources. According to Sayyed, who is the complainant in the case, “I was passing from near the bridge when I saw Alam strangulating the man. I immediately called the cops.” While investigating the case, the Juhu
police came to know that Alam’s relatives used to stay nearby. After crosschecking with the family, Alam’s identity was ascertained. “Based on primary information, Alam hails from Bihar. We have booked him on charges of murder. We are also consulting psychiatrists about his mental health,” said police officials. “We are a bit puzzled. We are still unsure about the victim’s identity. The investigations are on,” added the police.

Major setback for Sanjay Duttt By A Staff Reporter

n a major setback for actor Sanjay Dutt, the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed his curative petition that seeks a review of the court’s verdict that sentenced him to five years in jail earlier this year. This kind of petition is decided generally in judges’ chamber, by two or three senior-most judges and the judges who delivered the impugned judgement, was the last legal option for the actor after the apex court had dismissed his review petition on May 10. A four-judge bench headed by Chief Justice P. Sathasivam did not find merit in the cur-
ative petition filed by the 53year-old Bollywood actor. Dutt, who has been convicted in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case for illegal possession of weapons, is currently lodged in Pune’s Yerawada Jail. He had surrendered before a special court in Mumbai on May 16.

Dharavi slums face severe shortage of toilets but politicians continue to play with lives just to gain mileage By Vishnudas Sheshrao

ot only is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) apathetic regarding the absence of lavatorial facilities in the Dharavi area but the local political leaders are also politicising the issue, say experts. Consequently, citizens are denied a most basic right to sanitation and healthy living. “There is no development agenda except to win the hearts of the local populace. The repair and construction of toilets is a major issue in every Dharavi election but is almost always neglected,” says Jockin Arputham, a social worker attached to National Slum dweller Federation. There are only 400 toilet seats constructed and maintained by the BMC those serve for three lakh people. Of course, these illegal makeshift toilets constructed

However, as soon as the BMC officials come in to supervise the construction of toilets, the people opposed it. So, no new toilets have been constructed recently,” said Jokin. “Over the years, there has been progress in the sanitation problem of Dharavi. However, there is still a long way to go. Every morning, dozens of people are seen in long queues waiting for their turn to go to the toilet. This picture needs to be changed,” said Prabhag Samiti Chairman Virendra Tandel.

hile last year’s ban on gutka and paan masala by the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) came to an end on July 19, the new ban that has been implemented since July 20 is an improved and a stricter version of the previous one, said FDA officials. “Last year has been a year of learning for us. We have learnt from our past mistakes and this year we have made a more comprehensive gazette for the ban and have also filed a caveat so that any aggrieved party that wants to appeal against this ban will have to hear our side before going against us in the court,” said Suresh Deshmukh, Joint Commissioner (Food), FDA. dian Penal Code (IPC) in the The new ban has more prod- new ban. “Last year, we used to book ucts included in it. The first raid after the implementation of the new ban took place on July 22, 2013. Around 80 kilos of sweet and scented supari called Calcutta tukda and chikni tukda worth Rs.1.75 lakh was seized from Dahisar (East). The products were being manufactured by STC Indua Pvt. Ltd., under the brand Chandan. An FIR was to be lodged on July 23, and the offenders Pankaj Kantilal Shah and Kantilal R. Shah were to be booked under sections 188, 324 and 328 of the IPC. section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) which was bailable and non cognisable. There wasn’t police custody either. So there was no fear of being caught among the people. They easily used to get out on bail and we could never get to the root of the problem. But from now on, sections 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit and offence) have been included in the punitive action taken against violators of the ban because gutka and paan masala do cause grievous bodily injuries
and damage. Both these sections are for non bailable and cognisable offences and there is surety of getting police custody. We will book the offenders under these sections and along with section 188 and the relevant sections from the Food and Drugs Act,” said Deshmukh. Another first-of-its-kind step to be taken by the FDA is to book its own officials under section 166 of the IPC (Public servant disobeying law, with intent to cause injury to any person). “Till date we haven’t had to take any action against any of our officers but this time we have given all of them in writ-
ing that if there is neglect of duty from their side they will charged under section 166 of the IPC and they can be liable to imprisonment of six months, a fine of Rs.1,000 or both,” said Deshmukh.

Khadse alleged that the House was not taken into confidence while incorporating certain changes in the long pending anti-superstition bill. While moving the notice Khadse said, “Shivajirao Moghe, without taking the House into confidence, sought to modify the bill, with the help of Shyam Manav an activist of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (an organisation working to eradicate superstition). I feel both Moghe and Manav have indulged in a breach of privilege of the house and hence I am submitting the notice against both of them”. “The Social Justice Minister has

The government has proposed advertisements, practice, propagation and promotion of such to be acts nonbailable offences. The legislation will also include quacks (tantriks and unregistered medics) propagating black magic and other dubious practices as cures for ailments. Pothole racket F
OR years now – almost since India gained Independence – potholes on roads during the monsoon have been a source of lucrative income for contractors and corrupt municipal staff. It has become clear that the staff and contractors are involved in this racket. The BMC keeps giving explanations, and makes claims that it is trying new methods to increase the quality of pothole coverage. It has got in touch with Japan and experimented with their techniques. It tries to give the citizens an impression it is doing its best to produce a highcalibre coverage work and that despite all that effort, they have not been successful. It is quite disturbing that the BMC spends crores on covering potholes. A few showers are enough to uncover potholes. This shows that sub-standard materials are used to build our roads. How come there are some roads in the Fort area where potholes do not occur? What is a matter of grave concern is that since the monsoon arrived in Mumbai, two persons have died while driving through potholes which very often are covered with water and hence cannot be seen. It looks like it is not easy to bust the racket which has been successfully going on for a long while. Some councillors who have connection with contractors and also some ward officers and engineers are said to be against arriving at any effective solution to the problem.

AHUL GANDHI’S ‘Gandhigiri’ pep talk to party spokespersons seems to have been inspired by his recent private meeting with President Pranab Mukherjee. According to Congress sources, the young leader met the elder statesman over lunch last week. The luncheon lasted well over two hours as Rahul tapped a shrewd political mind that served as chief trouble-shooter for both the Congress and the Manmohan Singh government till a year ago. Rahul was to later reveal to close aides that he had gone to Rashtrapati Bhavan to seek political wisdom from Mukherjee. Those privy to titbits of information about their lengthy, freewheeling chat say that during the course of conversation, Mukherjee deplored the level of current political discourse. It was his opinion that top leaders at least should not stoop to making personal attacks or using indecorous language. This was not the political culture that India’s founding fathers had sought to establish. It was interesting that in his address to Congress spokespersons some days later, Rahul referred to Mahatma Gandhi as he exhorted them to stay within the realm of decency and focus on positive politics. “We cannot do that (use abusive language). We are the party of Mahatma Gandhi,” he said. And when some queried how they should counter the false propaganda and wrong information spread by Narendra Modi, Rahul simply replied, “We have to seek the truth.” These were thoughts inspired by the conversation with Mukheerjee. But politics has become so competitive and personalised that it may prove impossible to bring back the old culture of wit and sarcasm over abuse and name-calling.

CIENTISTS have for the first time identified how a pathway in the brain which is unique to humans allows us to learn new words. The average adult's vocabulary consists of about 30,000 words. This ability seems unique to humans as even the species closest to us — chimps — manage to learn no more than 100. It has long been believed that language learning depends on the integration of hearing and repeating words but the neural mechanisms behind learning new words remained unclear, reports PTI. Previous studies have shown that this may be related to a pathway in the brain only found in humans and that humans can learn only words that they can articulate. Now researchers from King's College London Institute of Psychiatry, in collaboration with Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and the University of Barcelona, have mapped the neural pathways involved in word learning among humans. They found that the arcuate fasciculus, a

the BJP doesn’t have a strong enough candidate to field from this Thakur dominated constituency. Vijay Bahadur Singh seems to be the best bet so far. Singh’s romance with the BJP began once he realised that Mayawati was unlikely to renominate him. Their relationship has been rocky ever since he started appearing suo moto on TV as a spokesperson for the party. No one does anything without permission from the boss in the BSP. collection of nerve fibres connecting auditory regions at the temporal lobe with the motor area located at the frontal lobe in the left hemisphere of the brain, allows the 'sound' of a word to be connected to the regions responsible for its articulation. Differences in the development of these auditory-motor connections may explain differences in people's ability to learn words.
MATTER & SPIRIT "Often humans take their ability to learn words for granted. This research sheds new light on the unique ability of humans to learn a language, as this pathway is not present in other species," said Dr Marco Catani, co-author from King's College London Institute of Psychiatry. "The implications of our findings could be wide ranging – from how language is taught in schools and rehabilitation from injury, to early detection of language disorders such as dyslexia.
"In addition these findings could have implications for other disorders where language is affected such as autism and schizophrenia," Catani said. The study involved 27 healthy volunteers. Researchers used diffusion tensor imaging to image the structure of the brain before a word learning task and functional MRI, to detect the regions in the brain that were most active during the task. They found a strong relationship between the ability to remember words and the structure of arcuate fasciculus, which connects two brain areas: the territory of Wernicke, related to auditory language decoding, and Broca's area, which coordinates the movements associated with speech and the language processing. In participants able to learn words more successfully their arcuate fasciculus was more myelinated meaning that the nervous tissue facilitated faster conduction of the electrical signal. In addition the activity between the two regions was more co-ordinated in these participants. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Foes turn friends: Shahrukh, Salman hug and make up SALMAN KHAN, after his court appearances in the hit and run case appears to be soft on Sharukh Khan during an Id party. Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan’s longstanding “disagreements” with Salman Khan came to an end courtesy a film, a filmmaker or an actress. And neither would it be on a public platform. In light of these recent pictures, SRK might have to eat his own words, unless of course, it’s a publicity stunt. Superstars Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan hugged each other at an Iftaar party in Mumbai, indicating the two actors who were not on talking terms post the incident at Katrina Kaif’s birthday bash in 2008, have perhaps patched up. Obsessed with dance bar ban THE front-page report ‘Ordinance to negate SC on dance bars?’ (ADC, July 23) paints a rather bad picture of the state government, particularly of the home minister, R.R. New NET format laudable IT is good news that the National Entrance Test (NET) is made objective from this year as per OF the recommendations of LETTER THE DAY the University Grants Commission (UGC). This year onwards a new format has been introduced in the NET wherein all the questions will be in the objective format. ACCIDENTS? POTHOLES MAIN CULPRITS!
HOUSEWIFE riding a scooter met with a fatal accident after hitting pothole in Vasai. The monsoon rains caused havoc on Mumbai roads and the Municipal Corporation is not able to cope with the maintenance work in a planned and systematic way resulting in number of road accidents. Monsoon occupies four months in a year and it is up to the civic authorities to keep the city neat and clean all round the year. BMC is able to give the mobile numbers of the officials responsible for various civic works and they are answerable to the people throughout the day and night (24x7). The size of the potholes are too big to handle and patch up work will not serve the purpose. The work of repairing should be taken place in the night so that traffic at focal point will not be disrupted during peak hours. Crater sized potholes leads to number of accidents as well.
— S. Abhisheck Ramaswamy, Sanpada
‘YOUR fault if pothole kills you’ (ADC, July 22), reveals the tragic death of Asha Damdhare which was triggered by a killer stretch on the overbridge at Vasai over the railway tracks. It is indeed sad to learn further that at the time of this fatal accident she was not wearing a helmet, which
SHODDY WORK: Use of substandard material during road building is the main reason for recurrence of potholes in the city and suburbs. could have at least saved her from a head injury. However, the police blamed her for this fatality as she was not wearing a helmet. As the report reveals that though the bike skidded, the spot is notorious in view of having a number of potholes including craters for which the concerned municipal staff should be held responsible, whether the riders wear helmets or not . — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
I DON’T understand this whole logic behind the technology needed to fill potholes. In the first place why should potholes occur? Rains are a common occurrence in Goa and other places but you don’t see the numerous potholes there as you see here.
The answer is simple. Poor quality roads due to substandard materials and most importantly the surface is not strong enough. It is well known that this is being done on purpose so that year after year huge sums of money is spent on these roads which find their way into the pockets of BMC officials and politicians. It’s a huge racket that has been going on for years. I say, privatise roiad building just like it has been done outside Mumbai on the way to Panvel etc. There too it rains heavily and there is movement of heavy vehicles yet the roads are in good condition. BMC must be pulled out of these road contracts. Too much of corruption. They just keep passing the buck year after year. — Richard Dias, Santacruz

Regionalisation
Know and understand your syllabus
The process of segregating an area into smaller segments is called regionalisation. For example, the division of a nation into states and states into districts etc. Regionalisation is quite necessary because the region is a base for economic development. It is also important for many historical, political, economical and sociological analysis.
INTRODUCTION
Geography syllabus is focused on Geography of India and units like physical division of India, North Indian Mountains, North Indian plains, Peninsular Plateau Region, Western and Eastern Ghats, Coastal Region, Indian Islands and Practical Geography has been discussed. This text book is based on the new curriculum and it studies the influence of the regional environment on the development of the country. Economics gives the information of basic concepts of economics in the curriculum to develop the level of understanding of students. It is expected that the students will understand economy, basic economic problems and solutions, inflation and public distribution system and consumer protection. The chapter like basic problems and solutions of an economy and inflation enable the students to understand the economic problems of their day to day life. The chapter on practical geography, which includes practical work, helps the students to gain practical knowledge to compare different geographical factors. Observation and skill of map reading will develop their abilities like comparison, critical thinking and self-study. Colourful maps, pictures, photographs and figures have been provided in the text book. As the text book is based on constructivism and practical methods, it will develop thinking and the creative power of the students. [Refer to the text book for short notes, brief answers and map work.] [Refer to the physical map more than the political map.]
Natural or Physical Division
India can be divided into five physical divisions. 1. The mountainous region in the North. 2. The North Indian plains 3. The Indian Plateau 4. The Coastal Lowlands 5. The Islands The physical factors are relatively static and fundamental for regional planning and development. It is necessary to have small regions to solve problems. Man is the driving force to develop the region.
Pooja Bhonsale St Mary's High School, Dahisar GEOGRAPHY & ECONOMICS - 1
India, a great country in terms of its geography and history, is well known for its cultural heritage and commercial prosperity for a long time. It is a land of great diversity owing to its large extent and climatic variations. India has plentiful natural resources such as sunshine, fertile soil, water, minerals, vegetation and animal life. India is divided into 28 states and 7 Union Territories. Area wise Rajasthan is the longest state followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Goa is the smallest state.
Location and Extent
India is bounded by the Arabian Sea in the West and South West, the Bay of Bengal in the East and South East and the Indian Ocean in the South. Kanniyakumari is the Southern tip of the Indian Peninsula. Sri Lanka is separated from India by the Gulf of Mannar and the narrow channel of Palk Strait.
Geology
The present physical structure of India is the result of a long geological process. India is known for its wide ranging geological features as well as variety of minerals. The Himalayan Mountains, the Indo-Gangetic plains and the Peninsular Plateau.
Process of Identification of a region
Regional approach is very important in geographic studies. It focuses on a particular area of earth. It studies all its physical as well as human aspects, which interact with each other in unison. Regions are identified on the basis of common characteristics, contiguity and similarity. For example, physiographical regions, climatic regions, forest regions etc.

Taking a year off to travel or work before college is a common thing in Europe and Australia. However, in India the trend is to never leave the treadmill of life from school and college. Even though gap years are viewed as a waste, life experiences and self development can happen best when you have time for yourself. Naressa Coutinho tells you about the pros and cons of taking time off between degrees.
R
enowned Ivy League colleges like Harvard, Yale and Princeton claimed that a gap year or a year out used productively ensures a student’s successful transitioning from dependence to independence. They believe that the time off can be a part of a lifelong education process, something that cannot always be learnt within the four walls of a classroom and this challenging experience makes a significant contribution to an individual’s personal development. While this period also known as a bridge year is obligatory in some countries like Israel, in Europe and America, it is usually optional and is a year between high school and college. In India, this time off taken right after high school for travel is often referred to as a drop year and is almost unheard off. However something that we have heard off, unmistakably education-oriented is, what we like to call, the golden period where students take a year off to prepare for competitive entrance examinations that will ensure them a seat in IITs and IIMS. In theory, a gap year is generally used by most students on a nonacademic front and mostly involves going on travel and cultural expeditions, pursuing hobbies, learning foreign languages, doing Continued on pg 14 «

internships or voluntary work and even working round the clock to save up for further education or college. Abroad, life skills hold more weight as compared to exam scores and so even the attitude towards time offs is more forthcoming and works as a point of interest on your CV when applying for jobs. Would our Indian employers appreciate a gap year? For Jessica Almeida (24), this gap year taken after the 12th std proved to be, in some cases, a good thing and in some others unfavourable when she went job hunting. “Having decided to get into the hotel industry, a field that requires you to dedicate your entire life to your job, I thought it best to take a gap year and pursue hobbies and learn skills that would otherwise be impossible once you land a job. In fact as a working individual you barely get time for yourself, especially in my field and getting leaves to make time for such things is equally difficult. I was often asked about this gap year at my interviews and while some employers saw it as a good decision, for some others it often became the last question they’d ask me.” As for Blaize Lobo (24), this time off proved to be a life changing decision. Also from the hotel management field, what initially was a bridge year to work and gain experience in the hotel industry ultimately saw him shifting to another field-human resource management. “Looking at the scarcity of jobs in the hotel line, I used the time off to understand other prospects and a job in a recruitment firm gave me a practical understanding of the work entailed. I went on to do my MBA in Human Resource and today I am an HR execu-
tive and a happy one.” For him, the time off helped him take a bold step towards a brighter future. Moreover, the work experience was also a required criterion to do an MBA, one that he gained in the gap year. So then why is it an absolute no-no for Noel Rodrigues? At 27, Noel regrets having to take that gap year when he was all of 18 years. One year rolled into seven years and now he discourages his siblings from even thinking of taking a break between degrees. “I thought I’d work for a year and then get back to my studies but somehow I never managed to. Once you start working, it gets stressful you have no time for yourself; weekends are used as stress busters and for socializing; you tend to lose focus. I even enrolled myself thrice to complete my graduation but never got around to sitting for the exam. Finally, I realized to be eligible for any promotion I had to at least be a graduate and so this time I did it.” Noel has now completed the first of the three years of BBA (Bachelors in Business Administration) and admits that it wasn’t easy in spite of all the help from peers and professors. Can time offs, however, be useful for those who are unsure about what their next step should be? Most of Anjali Pradhan’s (27) friends after college started working, some even took on part-time jobs as they continued to study on the side but Anjali wasn’t sure of what she wanted to do and so she decided to take a break, “The break has had its positives and negatives,” says Anjali, “I’ve become independent and earn for myself which is great. I love my job and this time off gave me a chance to figure out what I wanted to do before studying something that I probably wouldn’t pursue. The
“If a child feels that he/she needs time to decide on what career path is most suitable, a gap year can help them gain exposure and practical knowledge if used constructively. If not, it could lead to an individual feeling left behind in the scheme of things. Parents should be most supportive because there are chances that in a bid to build one’s self confidence, one may regret their decision and then the purpose of a gap year would be lost”
–Nishtha Tiwari, Counselor.
only negative point being that it’s going to be difficult to get back to studying.” While Noel blames the education system for leaving most students confused, he still recommends going to a counsellor than taking a gap year. Blaize raises a whole new debate of whether gap years are only for the upper middle class and rich kids who can afford to spend a year travelling and getting real life experiences and pursuing hobbies. While this is a common perception, gap year students are often known to work part-time as they travel, or volunteer for organizations that cover their expenses, simultaneously saving up for college. Another player in this equation that would be against this concept would be Indian parents who often overlook every step of our career choices. A year spent preparing for an entrance exams is still a digestible concept. On the other hand, Jessica who used the gap year to pursue mountaineering and adopt other life skills, says, “My parents supported me in my decision. Indian kids are brought up to be job and career oriented, failing at outdoor experiences.” Gap years rejuvenate your mind but can even lead you off track if not used productively. Let a gap year remain a year where you grow on a personal level and remember that age matters because you grasp faster when young and with age going back to studies can be a tough call to make.

What if the Storm ends
(Song of the week) Artist: Snow Patrol
Let’s take a break from all the electronic music, shall we? ‘What if the storm ends’ is a classic and dramatic song by Snow Patrol from their fifth studio album ‘A Hundred Million Suns’. What is really interesting is that it is only a part of a 16 minute track called ‘The Lightning’. Snow Patrol, at their creative best have an elaborate live performance for this song with specially made animation that plays simultaneously as the band performs it. The song is a classic alt rock track with a few signature Snow Patrol lyrics. Plus it really matches the weather outside!
Catch-22
By Joseph Heller
The book Catch-22 by Joseph Heller takes a few tries before you can follow the book and the language is a little vulgar at times. It’s the characters that keep you hooked, not so much the plot itself. So the underlying story is pretty serious. It does talk about
BOOK REVIEW Divya Saha Travel & Tourism being in the army but you can really relate to the main character, Yossarian and understand his desperation to escape and his main problem is that he can’t, because he’s stuck in a Catch-22 situation. This book actually coined the term Catch-22 which so many people use now, but not many have read the book in which it was conceived.

ne such example of someone bitten by the social service bug is 16 year old girl Rayna Srivastava, a high school student in Frisco High School, Texas, USA, who spent her summer vacation at ‘Divya Prabha’ a girl’s orphanage run by the ‘Society of the Poor Sisters of Our Lady’, at Vartak Nagar in Thane. Rayna stayed at ‘Divya Prabha’ from June 14 to July 7 and volunteered to help teach the orphans of the home some conversational English and something about the environment, and also introduced them to using the internet. This is not all. She also managed to raise funds for the expenses of two girls of Divya Prabha for the entire year by calling up her friends in Mumbai. Besides, she left with the promise of finding donors to fund the orphanage’s expenses of Rs.19,000 per child per year. In fact Rayna’s schoolmates went to Brazil to enjoy the summer vacation, but she preferred to come to India. Initially her parents, Rahul and Waishali were reluctant to allow their daughter to mingle with the orphans but when she insisted, they relented. For Rayna, as well as her parents the three weeks with Divya Prabha were an eye-opener. Rayna’s father Rahul, who sometimes accompanied her to the orphanage, said, “IITs and medical colleges while giving admissions should give preference to students who show interest in social work and empathy to fellow human beings. Just having good marks is not enough!” “The US education system encourages students to volunteer for social work, to sensitize them towards less fortunate people. These are girls from the streets, abandoned by families and often physically and emotionally abused by the very people who are responsible for their safety. The rehabilitation process starts with counseling and by giving the orphans a stable and caring environment and letting them know that they will have a home, food, clothing and education till they become independent. The team that has participated in other competitions had much to say about the FLL and how unique and interesting an experience it was for them. “What was really interesting about the FLL was that it was challenging and yet the most fun we’ve had in awhile. The atmosphere was super friendly and we got to interact with all the other teams and check out their creations as well. At first, we were a bit intimidated by some teams’ robots ‘cause they looked bigger and were pretty visible from the get go. We also got to meet Scott Evans, who is a well known robotics designer, that was super exciting,” recalls Aakarsh Gupta, (10th grade, Dhirubhai Ambani International School) When asked about what they actually learnt from the competition, their answer was unusual with a touch of humour. ”We learnt that you can never beat

group of Mumbai-bred kids recently entered and won the Gold Championship at the FIRST Lego League, Asia Pacific International that was held this July in Sydney, Australia. The competition comprised 31 teams from 17 countries. The Indian team named Team R Factor prepared for over 6 months at the CTW in Juhu, Mumbai (Children’s Technology Workshop) for this competition. As the only Indian team who featured in the finals (at their level) and with this year’s theme ‘Senior Solutions’ in mind the boys worked hard on their device named ‘Saffron’. “We wanted to create something that could be helpful to elderly people and we wanted it to be unique as well. We discussed with our grandmothers and most of them talked about how cooking
was becoming difficult because of their forgetfulness,” explains one of the team members Arvind Ranganathan from Ecole Mondiale World School. But the questions arises, what exactly does Saffron do? Amay Saxena a grade 10 student from Bombay Scottish broke it down perfectly. “Saffron is a robot-

CANINE CRAZY!
Tell us about dog training and its needs. The society we live in is not dogfriendly. Dog owners need to understand that when we choose to keep dogs in crowded cities, we take on additional responsibilities. Allowing a dog to jump on strangers, dirty public places and chew up the neighbour’s plants is not exactly responsible ownership. What’s more, a well-mannered dog commands respect and is a joy to be around. Dog training can help teach your dog good manners and to be under control when in the presence of guests. Very much like we teach a child how to behave, dogs too need that guidance from us.
Is it a popular course abroad? Yes, it is a popular course in India and in countries like UK, Australia and USA. Even in countries like Taiwan and China, people are taking up dog training as a career. Around ten years ago, it wouldn’t have been a feasible career option, but with changing times it has become a popular choice of career for dog lovers.
Give us details about the various courses in dog training you offer. What are the courses like? (Classroom based/practical?) I offer a variety of courses to help dog lovers get into the profession. They are: Canine Trainer Course – This course is the most popular one as it helps educate a dog lover into taking up dog training as a career. I have over 800 students across the globe. Canine Behaviour Course – This course helps people take up canine behaviour as a career, it includes topics such as toilet training, separation anxiety, fears and phobias, learning how to speak canine language, amongst others. Canine Aggression Course – This course is dedicated to the complex topic of dog aggression and how to work with it, mainly a course for people already working in the canine field. Canine Kenneling Course – A course for people who run kennels or do pet sitting or desire to get into the profession. This course looks at the much ignored behavioral aspects of pet sitting or kenneling a dog. Too many people who have no qualification are running kennels without realizing what a dog is all about. This course teaches them how to tackle aggression in kennels, stress, boredom and much more. I am the only person in Asia to have the Kennel Club of England’s accreditation in Companion Dog Training and Behavioral Training for the KCAI (Kennel Club Accreditation for Dog trainers and Behaviourists) Scheme. This puts my courses on par with some of the best in the world, especially for those who want to earn a cer-
tificate at the highest level in dog training and behavior.
Are their any academic prerequisites for the courses? What are your fees? The only thing I require is that the person has to be at least 16 years old and a dog lover. Since mostly dog lovers attend my courses, it is easy to teach them my methods. None of my methods ever involve hitting or intimidating a dog. All are reward based methods which work in understanding the dog and building a bond and a language of communication. The fees for the courses vary but start from Rs. 20,000. Explain the skills and qualities required to do dog training? Dog training is a profession where practice makes one better. No one is really born with it. If a person loves dogs and is willing to learn how to bond with the dog and has plenty of patience, then they often make good trainers. I have also realized a good train<<Shirin er has to have lots of Merchant patience, good reasoning skills, good communication skills (especially with humans as it is the owners we work mostly with), and good lateral thinking ability.
From what I understand, dog training is based on canine behavior. So, don’t you think it would be more suited for someone with a Psychology background? Yes, today’s methods of training are based on dog behaviour. But dogs are simple animals and dog behaviour is simple and uncomplicated. It’s not rocket science. Most dog lovers seem to understand it better than people with fancy degrees in psychology with no understanding of dogs. I teach it on my courses, the topic is covered in detail for those who don’t have a psychology background. What a person does require is common sense. Most problems involving dogs can be solved just with simple thinking and a lot of common sense.
« OFFBEAT COURSE
What are the advantages of taking up dog training? For those who love dogs, it can be the career of their dreams. You get to work with dogs, meet and play with plenty of dogs and puppies, interact and build a community with other dog lovers, share information and the most important – help pet parents understand their dogs. For me, it is addictive to help dogs and their pet parents. I relish the moments when they write back to say they have understood their pet and are living again happily. Saving so many pets from being
abandoned or given up for adoption is a great feeling.
What about its career prospects and remuneration? My students in India make anywhere from around Rs.10,000 a month to Rs.100,000. It can be a lucrative career if one chooses to make it so.
Any advice to someone who would like to take it up? Only join this profession if you truly love dogs and have the commitment towards a new profession. Like any profession, it is not as rosy as it seems. You will need to work hard and make your way up the ladder. There will be bad days and there will be many good days. And then there will be those days when there is a look of gratitude in the dog’s eyes, and you know that it is meant for you.
Is there any thing else you’d like to say regarding these courses and dog training in general? I started the courses over 10 years ago to help people in India take up a profession that paid their bills and allowed them to work with their favourite animal. Through these courses I have seen a change in the dog training culture in our country. Many trainers yet train dogs using methods of intimidation and pain- it is not needed anymore and my students can help pet parents train using love and rewards. Sending out these students into the world has allowed pet parents to choose a trainer who won’t hurt their dog in the name of training. This has caused many old fashioned dog trainers to wake up and change their methods. The courses have helped so many people in our country understand dogs and make a difference to their lives. No one else in all of India is qualified to and runs such intensive courses in behaviour and training.
Enlighten us a little about the dog training culture in India. 10 years ago dog training in India meant choke chains, intimidation and pain for the dog. Dog behaviour was virtually unheard of. Over the past ten years with a lot of education, things have changed. Our dog training culture has changed. People realise the futility of hurting a dog in the name of training. New methods are fun and use love, rewards, understanding and bonding to communicate with the dog. The training opens up a whole new language of communication where the owner understands what the dog is saying the dog understands the owner better. It basically helps the pat parent live the rest of their lives understanding their pet and bond between the two is stronger than before the training

All I can do is laugh. Because to me the very idea of her making music is funny. I’ve heard Priyanka Chopra sing (like actually sing) on some talk show a couple of years ago and I thought she was decent...almost good, in fact. And then I see her singing ‘In My City’ and I thought to myself - what is she doing? Her ‘musical endeavours’ are just an extension to her building her sex appeal across the world. And what a tasteless way of doing that. I mean, she is no Madonna or Beyonce to pull off average musical talents with her showmanship. Her videos and choice of songs say only one thing about her - Extremely poor taste. —Stuti Jhaveri, Content Developer
It’s good to diversify into other areas of interest provided you have what it takes. I think Priyanka Chopra gets overrated attention because she is a good actress. She should just stop, she’s much better than senseless rapping and getting weird words strung together calling it a song. But I’m pretty sure if it plays in a club I won’t stop dancing. —Ayushi Mukherji, Graduate
She tried something different and it did not turn out so great. She has the talent to sing but is trying to be someone she’s not. It’s brave of her to try it out though! I guess that’s about it! No reason to publicly scourge her for that. The immediate reactions and jokes were funny for a while....but dragging it on and on makes it real silly! Maybe Piggy Chops should leave the music aside for awhile and continue with what she does best - acting.

ATNA: A day after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan hailed L.K. Advani as BJP’s supreme leader, another voice of support for the party patriarch came on Tuesday when Shatrughan Sinha described him as the ‘most seasoned and mature’ leader who must be at the “helm of affairs”. Sinha also appeared to lend his support to murmurs of discontent in the party over projection of the Gujarat Chief Minister as possible prime ministerial candidate saying if it was done through Parliamentary Board “it would be great”. “I still maintain that Narendra Modi, though he is very popular...The kind of hype that has been created thanks to media and thanks to all of us, he has been very successful. “If he has been projected as prime minister after Parlia-

The Dish TV stock has been recently under pressure declining 12% since June as the INR depreciation is a negative for the company and the weak ARPU print in Q4FY13 results has been a concern. The INR depreciation has fundamentally impacted the company by increasing the cost of STB acquisition and increasing liability of its USD-denominated debt. While the forex impact is here to stay, we believe the recent progress in digitisation by the government to aggressively push for consumer application forms (CAF) for DAS subscribers, can help improve DTH industry economics. We believe digitisation is a necessary condition for the economics to improve as it establishes a level playing-field between DTH and cable players. We factor the impact of INR depreciation and lower our target price for the stock to Rs76. We continue to believe in a strong ARPU story that would likely boost DTH business. DTH offers a superior business model over cable owing to the last mile ownership it offers. We maintain BUY and recommend investor to BUY at current prices owing to negativity over forex. Valuation attractive; time to BUY: The stock is currently trading at an attractive valuation of 8.6x FY15E EV/EBITDA. We believe the current market price provides an entry opportunity for investors and we maintain our BUY rating with a revised DCF-based target price of Rs76/share factoring an INR/USD exchange rate of Rs 59 (earlier: Rs 56). We have also increased our debt assumptions and interest payout factoring the same.
Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on Larsen & Toubro CMP: Rs. 903 Target Rs. 1200
LT’s posted below-expected Q1FY14 results on weaker revenue growth/lower margins. As per management, lower revenue growth mainly stemmed from: (1) a non-linear execution profile of projects and (2) a lower order book across process sectors. But importantly, management maintained its FY14E guidance. While the macro environment remains challenging, we expect LT likely to meet our FY14/FY15 estimates on account of robust order inflows. BUY with a Mar’14 TP of Rs 1,200. Domestic sales weak even as Infra segment growth remains strong: Domestic sales were down 8% YoY in the quarter on account of weakness across Power, Metals and Products segments. However, growth in the Infrastructure segment was robust (23% YoY) led by the domestic market (sales up 26% YoY) with a strong performance across sub-segments. Management maintained its FY14E revenue growth guidance of 15% given the execution profile of the current order book. Robust infra order inflows: Order inflows for Q1F14 were robust at Rs 252bn (↑28% YoY), while the order book was up 8% at Rs 1654bn (or 2.7x FY13 sales). International orders contributed 12% to the total order book at Q1FY14-end. Reiterate BUY with a Mar’14 TP of Rs 1,200: On a SOTP basis, we ascribe Rs ~965/sh to the standalone business (15x 1-year fwd. PE) and Rs 235/sh to subsidiaries.
Anand Rathi calls a ‘Buy’ on Bajaj Finance CMP: Rs. 1354 Target Rs. 1701
Key takeaways SME and consumer finance drive robust loan growth: Bajaj Finance’s net profit grew 26.7% yoy, driven by strong growth in assets under management (AUM), up 32.8% yoy. The proportion of SME finance in AUM rose 410bps yoy to 48.7%. Disbursement growth was a healthy 32.2% yoy, driven by strong disbursements in consumer and SME finance at respectively 40.7% and 39.4% yoy. Rising discretionary spending coupled with the firstmover advantage and a varied product mix would aid the NBFC achieve a strong 25.6% CAGR in loans from FY13 to FY16. Our take: We expect the healthy loan growth, rising proportion of secured lending and improving productivity to drive a sustainable RoA of more than 3.3% over FY13-16. We maintain a Buy. At our price target the stock would trade at 2.1x FY14e and 1.8x FY15e BV. Our target price is based on the two stage DDM (CoE: 15.3%; beta: 1.04; Rf: 8%). Risk: Lower-than-expected economic growth could reduce loan growth and increase NPA. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

CAD To Remain At Around 4% Of GDP Until 2015 Rupee expected to depreciate at around 3-5 % annually until the RBI recoups forex reserves
By A Business Reporter
T
he current account deficit of the country is “peaking” but is likely to remain around the 4 % level until 2015, says a Bank of America Merrill Lynch report. “India’s current account deficit is likely peaking at elevated levels. We expect it to abate from 4.8 % of GDP in FY2013 to 4.3 % in FY2014 and 3.7 % in FY2015,” DSP Merrill Lynch India Economist Indranil Sen Gupta said in the research note. CAD, which is the difference between the outflow and inflow of foreign currency, is likely to remain above the “sustainable” level of 2.4 % of GDP until 2015. According to the report, the factors that are largely responsible for the elevated levels of
CAD include low growth, which hurts exports, and high G-3 liquidity, which pumps up the oil import bill, that will likely last until 2015. Moreover, a high current account deficit is expected to limit the accumulation of forex reserves in the normal course, BofA-ML added. “The good news: the CAD is likely peaking. The bad news: it will persist at around 4 % of GDP until 2015, above our sustainable 2.4 % estimate. Ugly is this will limit FX accumulation,” BofA-ML said. During 2012-13 CAD hit a record high of 4.7 % of GDP or USD 88 billion. On the rupee, the report said that the INR is expected to remain under pressure – of around 3-5 % annual depreciation - until the RBI recoups forex reserve.
“We expect the RBI to hold 5862/USD, if the US dollar trades in a 1.20-1.30/euro band,” it said, adding that “unless it raises NRI or sovereign bonds, the INR will likely breach 65 against the dollar in 2014, as it can at most sell USD 30 billion in defence.” The rupee has depreciated by more than 10 % in the last one month and crossed the psychological level of 60 per dollar in June-end touching 61.21 in early July. “We expect the RBI to finally take more proactive steps to recoup FX reserves, including Issuing NRI bonds or sovereign debt offer readymade fixes. Other options: hiking FII debt limits, FDI limits (telecom done) and FII equity limits in PSU banks,” the report said.

In the course of its inquiry, Sebi found that the company had launched and operated CIS without registering with it for the same and an amount of Rs 804 crore was outstanding with it to be repaid to investors. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): An increase in income is indicated. You are able to reinvest the surplus amount profitably. Sometimes extra money coming in can mean that you may have some unforeseen expenses coming up too. Be prepared for contingencies that could turn up from areas you least expect. A minor misunderstanding could get blown out of proportion if you allow it to. Work at achieving harmony in your relationship.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): You may feel frustrated that things are not going according to plan. You may find that you have to devote more time and money for things to move ahead. In the long run matters will work out favorably and you can heave a sigh of relief. News from overseas or long distance journeys is possible. Old friendships are renewed and new ones formed at social gathering. There will also be a happy occasion to celebrate with family today.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): An agreement or contract may require a few changes. You need to clarify any fears or doubts that you have about a new business association that you are about to finalize. It seems someone jealous of your success will try to stall your project. Do not listen to unwarranted advice and suggestions.
CANCER (June 21 - July 21): You will have a favorable day at work. There will be a fresh work offer that holds promise of a steady growth in your career. In new projects, working independently will benefit you. Any legal disputes regarding an old project or partnerships will get resolved now. A new attraction may not be the staying kind. Try not to get too involved or you may get hurt later when things do not work out.
LEO (July 22 - August 21): You can look forward to gains from unexpected sources. A work proposal that was withdrawn will be revived. The successful completion of this assignment will get you series of fresh contracts. An opportunity to spend a relaxed evening in the company of an old friend will prove rejuvenating. Try not to spoil things by discussing work.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): A sudden influx of work opportunities come your way requiring your personal attention. Tight schedules could make you irritable. Relax, things will work out. You may decide on a study course to boost career prospects. The employed awaiting news as to a change may have to kill time longer. Personal relationships are disappointing. Don’t let it bother you. You can’t please everybody. At times you can feel alone and forsaken
LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): Apply your mind to work leaving nothing to chance. Keeping a tab on what’s happening around you will work to your advantage. Success is assured to you in all that you do. There will be opportunities to travel for work and pleasure. Financially too the period is good. Including your mate on a travel plan for work could do wonders for your relationship. Try not to discuss family and related issues. Just enjoy and forget about others right now.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Don’t worry about minor issues that come in your way. Avoid fresh project at this point unless you are sure you can finish it promptly. Stay out of controversies with those around you by being too loud in your comments. Money matters require prudence. Problems in personal relationships add to your difficulties. Try to avoid confrontations in marital or romantic associations.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You will have a demanding profitable day at work. Those working jointly or in partnership will make rapid progress in their work activities. Some of you will take charge of an important project, which will assure a steady income. Things seem to be moving ahead slowly. A family gathering to celebrate a happy occasion is likely. Those in love will be introducing their beloved to the family.
CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): Your current success leads to new work offers some of which are good. Be firm in your negotiations for you can command your price. However you must remain flexible and it must be your endeavor to get this particular contract, for it has the potential for long term benefit and growth. Your mate or beloved will respond well to your positive and happy state of mind. In friendships too you will have a better rapport.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): Tying up loose ends smartening up with some discipline will lead to better work output and gains. It is monetarily a good day. You may look for fresh investments that have the potential for long term benefits. Speculative trading could lead to a setback. Find time to know the emotional needs of your beloved who is missing the carefree the days of courtship or happier times together. Romance will make an entry into your life again.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Growth in your work is highlighted. Each decision you take, you are moving forward. You have found direction, at last. You are going to be very much in demand for work. News from overseas will be favorable. There are possibilities for travel soon. There is chance for romance while traveling. Small compromises for the ones you love will go a long way in bonding with them. You will be happy with way a relationship is developing.

Jwala, Ashwini hit out at IBL as organizers slash their base price; Boe ‘pissed’ at not getting selected
N
EW DELHI: Doubles specialists Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were left disappointed with the Indian Badminton League's decision to slash their base price at the last moment in the Player's auction and termed it as "disrespectful" and "absurd". Commonwealth Games women's doubles champions Jwala and Ashwini were two of the six icon players, who went under the hammer yesterday but just hours ahead of the player's auction, the IBL decided to reduce their base price from USD 50,000 (Rs 29,86,264) to USD 25,000 (14,93,125) after consultation with the six franchises. In the auction, Jwala went to Krrish Delhi Smashers at USD 31,000 (Rs 18,51,520), while Pune Pistons bagged Ashwini for the base price of USD 25,000. "I am very disappointed. Me and Ashwini signed the contract as icon players and we should have been given a better deal. We were not even informed about the reduction of base price. In fact, the news that women's doubles was replaced by another men's singles, I came to know late. What can I say, it is disrespectful and I am deeply hurt and upset by IBL," Jwala told PTI. Ashwini, who won the World Championship bronze along with Jwala in London in 2011, was equally hurt at this last minute decision by the IBL. "I didn't get a call regarding this. No one explained things to me. I am really hurt and deeply upset. Until the auction got over I didn't even know about it," Ashwini said. "I heard that since there is no women's doubles competition, so our price was slashed but then how come other women's doubles players got way more than me. That is more absurd. They make you icon players and then they don't treat you with respect," Ashwini said. Interestingly, Ashwini's current women's doubles and mixed doubles partners Pradanya Gadre and Tarun Kona were bought by USD 46,000 and USD 28,000 after starting at a base price of USD 10,000 and
I’ll never come to India: Boe after IBL snub
No doubles flavour... Erstwhile partners Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were left with less cash in hand as their base prices were slashed due to the scrapping of the women’s doubles event in the Indian Badminton League. USD 15,000. Explaining the reasons behind this sudden slashing of the base price, Ashish Chadha, CEO of Sporty Solutionz, the commercial partner of IBL, said: "Last night we had a closed bidding but then two players Jwala and Ashwini went unsold, so it was decided that close bidding will not work so it was scrapped and we went for an open bidding for all icon players.
"In November last year, it was decided that we will have women's doubles and at that time Jwala and Ashwini were signed as icon players but subsequently women's doubles was dropped. But to safeguard their interest, IBL decided to still give them a chance to fetch a bigger amount in the auction and also decided to pay them the deficit amount if the amount is below USD 50,000," ex-
NEW DELHI: Exasperated at being snubbed at the Indian Badminton League players' auction, Denmark's Mathias Boe vowed to not visit India after appearing in Thomas Cup next year. Boe, who won the All England Super Series in 2011 with compatriot Carsten Mogensen, had a base price of USD 50,000 but the plained Chadha. Asked if the open bidding was harsh on Ashwini, Chadha said: "That was something which was coming from the sack. We can't help it. Even if we had done a closed bidding, the maximum she would have got is USD 50,000. Still she gets USD 50,000 now." The six franchises had a purse of USD 275,000 to buy 10 players - four
33-year-old did not find any takers. Boe, who is London Olympics men's doubles silver medallist, said next year's Thomas Cup would be his last assignment in India. "Didn't get sold to IBL. I'm really pissed, as I have supported the event all the way though, and almost left the national team to participate," Boe wrote on his twitter page. "After Thomas Cup next year I will never set my feet in India again or support any events from their side," he wrote. Interestingly, his partner Mogensen was bought by Banga Beats from Bangalore at a base price of USD 50,000. A lot of high-profile players went unsold, including Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana (ranked fourth), Japan's Kenechi Tago (ranked fifth), Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto (ranked eighth) and Sony Dwi Kuncoro (ranked 10th) as they will not be available for the entire tournament, which will be held from August 14 to 31. "I am disappointed because it took a lot for us to get these players on board but I can understand the franchises point of view. They also can't help as these players are not available for the entire event," Ashish Chadha, CEO of Sporty Solutionz, commercial partners of IBL, had said on Monday. foreign, six Indian and one junior. Asked why the women's doubles was replaced by another men's singles, Chadha said: "The women's doubles was dropped because there was less of players and awareness and second and foremost that was discussed at the governing council that if we have just one men's singles that won't let our single players to get a go at the top international players."
WBF postpones India Federer waits on final racquet decision Open to January next year G
NEW DELHI: The USD 120,000 India Open Grand Prix Gold, which was scheduled to be held at Lucknow in December this year, has been postponed by a month to January next year by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Since its inception in 2009, the India Open tournament -- named after 1982 Commonwealth Games champion Syed Modi from Uttar Pradesh -- has been organised in December but the fifth edition will now be held in January. "We had requested the BWF to postpone the tournament a few months back. They agreed to our
request and gave us a new slot in January," Badminton Association of India (BAI) general secretary Vijai Sinha told PTI. "We miss out of the participation of many players as they prepare for the BWF Super Series Final and then don't come for the India Open. Also since it happens just ahead of the Christmas, European players also skip it but now we can expect the participation of more players," he added. The tournament, which was won by Parupalli Kashyap last year, will now be held from January 21 to 26 instead of December 17 to 22.
STAAD, SWITZERLAND: Roger Federer said that he will spend this week at the Swiss Open testing his new larger racquet and will make a decision later on whether to use it in the run-up to the US Open and beyond. The top seed, who is playing the ATP 250 clay event at altitude for the first time since he won it in 2004, will on Thursday play his opening match after a bye against either German Daniel Brands or longtime friend Marco Chiudinelli. Federer began testing a larger 98square-inch racquet last week in Hamburg, reaching the semi-finals before losing to number 114 Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis. He said he needs more time and matches to make a final decision on the prototype model. "So far, I'm happy with this
Roger Federer change," said the 17-time grand slam champion, "But I need many hours on the court to see if this is a good decision. I haven't yet taken the deci-
sion on whether to use it in the US (he begins his pre-US Open campaign in a fortnight at the Montreal Masters). I still need to think it over.”

UMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association has changed its eligibility rules for contesting its forthcoming elections, a move which is widely seen to prevent senior administrator Prof Ratnakar Shetty from regaining his place in its managing committee. The managing committee of MCA, at its meeting last night, has taken a decision that debars anyone who is a paid employee of its parent body Cricket Board, including the National Cricket Academy, and coaches or employees of various IPL franchisees, from the elections, a top source told PTI. "The decision to debar such persons from contesting the elections has been taken. As for the date of the elections it will be decided once the hearing on the court case filed by Prof Shetty, which is coming up tomorrow, is over," the source said. Shetty, who is employed by the
BCCI as its general manager (game development), has filed a case against MCA's earlier decision to ban him for five years
from all the association's activities, after he had raised the possibility of some office bearers having sold tickets of the T20 In-
Dafedar shines in England M
UMBAI: Khizar Dafedar, a trainee at the Dilip Vengsarkar Cricket Academy at the Oval Maidan, Churchgate, returned from the UK, where his performances both on the field and in the classroom have impressed many. On the field he scored 348 runs for the school in nine limited overs matches he played. Dafedar was brought to the UK by Dr Samir Pathak, a surgeon and former cricketer, and John Wilson, a teacher at Cheadle Hulme School at the recommendation of former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar. The scheme initiated by Pathak and Wilson, looks to hone the young players skills in unfamiliar conditions whilst also ensuring cultural and life experiences which should help the cricketers broaden their outlook in years to come. Following on from his school success, he played in a charity match for a select Yorkshire Xl versus a Lashings World XI, fea-

Meanwhile, there is a strong possibility of former BCCI and ICC chief, Sharad Pawar returning to the helm of MCA at the elections. We hope to surprise India in one of five games: Zim coach
INDIA SEEK REVENGE FOR TWO-YEAROLD HUMILIATION IN ZIMBABWE
Indian players are seen during a practice session in Harare, Monday. India take on Zimbabwe in their first ODI today.
H
ARARE: With most of their top stars rested, a depleted Indian cricket team will seek revenge for the humiliation it suffered two years ago when it takes on minnows Zimbabwe in a five-match ODI series starting tomorrow, well aware of the perils of taking the home side lightly. On their previous trip here, another depleted Indian team, captained by Suresh Raina, lost both its matches to Zimbabwe in a tri-series which also featured familiar foes Sri Lanka. The Indians, being led by Virat Kohli this time after Mahendra Singh Dhoni was rested, would do well to revise the lessons of that trip before taking the field today. Zimbabwe may not be too big a force to reckon with in international cricket but can be a handful for an under-strength team. And India can be called a depleted side given that top spinner R Ashwin, and frontline pacer Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav would
also be missing from action apart from Dhoni. "All along we've prepared and hoped we might surprise them in one of the games," Zimbabwe coach Andy Waller has stated. "You've got to be realistic, but as long as we're competitive and do the best we can. Our guys are hugely excited about this. It's a great experience for them, and we've been preparing knowing that the best side in the world are coming," he added. The Indian batting would revolve around the likes of Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. Rohit has blossomed in the opening role and would look to strengthen his position with some good knocks here. In fact, Shikhar and Rohit average 57.72 in partnership and have put together three century stands so far. Cheteshwar Pujara would lend stability to the middle order where Suresh Raina will also have an important role to play. Raina would
look to wipe off the memories of the previous tour's debacle under his captaincy. India's bowling attack has an allnew look to it with the duo of Shami Ahmed and rookie Mohit Sharma comprising the pace department, aiming to earn some brownie points for themselves. Vinay Kumar and Jaydev Unadkat are the other speedsters in the squad. The spin attack would feature debutant Parveez Rasool, the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to get the national selectors' nod, and the experienced Amit Mishra. Dinesh Karthik would don the gloves behind the stumps in Dhoni's absence. The Brendon Taylor-led Zimbabwean team, which has been training for the series for the last two months, is devoid of any major stars. Taylor is their star in the batting department and has the best record against India in ODIs, with 184 runs at an average of 46 in four
games. The squad features five seamers, including Kyle Jarvis, Tendai Chatara, Brian Vitori, Elton Chigumbura and the uncapped Michael Chinouya. HARARE: Zimbabwe managed to beat India not once but twice the last time they were here and coach Andy Waller is hoping that his wards would spring the same surprise in at least one match of the five-game ODI series that starts here today. "All along we've prepared and hoped we might surprise them in one of the games. You've got to be realistic, but as long as we're competitive and do the best we can," said Waller. Zimbabwe beat in both the matches of a tri-series during the visitors' last trip here two years ago. "Our guys are hugely excited about this. It's a great experience for them, and we've been preparing knowing that the best side in the world are coming. I think the guys are up for it. Hopefully all the hard work we've put in the last nine weeks is going to pay off," he added. The India-Zimbabwe limitedover series is Waller's first international assignment as head coach. He took over from Steve Mangongo, who had held the position in a caretaker's role until the end of the home series against Bangladesh in May. The Indian team might be missing some of its senior players, including captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, in this tour but Waller insisted that Zimbabwe did not consider the squad a depleted one. "I think they've just got so many players. With the new guys who've come in, I don't think there's a huge difference to be honest," said the coach. "We know that they're all very good cricketers, so we don't look at it like a weakened attack at all." Zimbabwe have prepared hard for the series. Apart from having a training camp, they have also played a three-day practice match against Australia A, which the visitors won by 80 runs as the host batsmen failed to back the hard work of their bowlers, who had utilised the bowler-friendly Country Club pitch very well. Waller said he expected the batsmen to have an easier time at the Harare Sports Club, where the first three ODIs will be played, than in Bulawayo.
Gerardo Martino new Barcelona coach: Club
M
ADRID: Argentine coach Gerardo Martino has been named as Barcelona's new boss on a two-year deal, the club confirmed. "FC Barcelona have reached an agreement for the hiring of Gerardo Martino as the new coach of the first team for the next two seasons," said a statement on the club's website. "In the next few hours a programme will be confirmed for his arrival in Barcelona, the signing of his contract and his presentation." Martino is not
expected to take charge when Barca face their old manager Pep Guardiola in their first pre-season friendly away to Bayern Munich on Wednesday. The 50-year-old arrives after successful period in charge of Newell's Old Boys in his homeland but has just over three weeks to get used to his new surroundings before the start of the Spanish league season on August 17. Barca were suddenly forced into looking for a new boss just last week when Tito Vilanova sadly
had to resign due to an ongoing battle with cancer. Martino has no previous managerial experience in Europe, although he did enjoy a brief spell in Spain with Tenerife as a player in 1991. However, it is his great success as a coach in both Paraguay and Argentina that has convinced the Catalans that he is the right man for the job. Martino won four titles in Paraguay with Libertad and Cerro Porteno
between 2002 and 2006 before going onto take charge of the country's national team. He led the South Americans to their best ever performance in a World Cup in 2010 where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Spain in a nervy quarter-final in Johannesburg. Paraguay also reached the Copa America final in 2011 under Martino's guidance, before he left to take charge of Newell's, for whom he made more than 500 appearances as a player in three spells.
