Do you think holding elections in colleges is a right move?

Tejashvi Dalvi HR executive Yes, college elections would train future leaders rise up, no matter what the size of the politics or election is. I feel it’s the most exciting thing.

Pratik More Service Yes, students should get an idea of how the government and the politics work, and if they learn it from a lower level I am sure facing hurdles could help them lead a better life in the near future.

Rahul Lal Businessman No, because it is time to be only involved in studies. They don’t have any idea what life is all about because politics has certain norms and regulations which have to be learned at the college level before putting them into practise.

Shraddha Kanade Student Yes, it’s a good decision indeed as it makes us prepare for the outside world, being politically active along with studies will turn your involvement into research and students will be updated with the day to day on goings along with the regular studies.

TAINTED TRUSTEE Court confirms dismissal of Prabodh Mehta from Lilavati Trust By Philip Varghese

I

n an interesting development, the City Civil Court has recently confirmed the dismissal of Prabodh Mehta as a trustee of the Lilavati Trust which governs the super-speciality Lilavati Hospital in Bandra. Civil Judge R. V. Jatale passed the order last week on an appeal filed by Mehta against the April 5 order of Joint Charity Commissioner. While dismissing the appeal filed

by Mehta against his removal by the Joint Charity Commissioner, Judge observed that, admittedly applicant Prabodh is convicted of offence of fraud, forgery and money laundering to the tune of Rs.170 crore and that undoubtedly amounts to acts of moral turpitude. Judge observed that considering the offences against Prabodh are proved to be of very serious nature and that too while collar crime amounting to moral turpitude, dismissal of Prabodh should be the

fittest sentence. “The message should be clear to all and sundry that the persons who are tainted would not be allowed to stand prominently in the public institute and participate therein. In fact, their presence would be a menace to the public trust, public property and public life,” the judge said. While Senior Counsel Mahesh Jethmalani and Karl Tamboly appeared on behalf of Charu Mehta, Prabodh Mehta was represented by

She added, “Organ donation can be done by relatives of brain dead persons. People are ignorant about organ donations, hence I believe Ganesh Utsav is the best platform for spreading awareness.” Former Mayor Shubha Raul said, “There is long list of people who are suffering for lack kidneys, heart, liver, lung, pancreas, intestines, cornea, skin, bone, bone marrow. Relatives, who donate organs of even one brain dead person, give a new lease of life for many.” She added, “Only a blind knows the importance of eye. Our ignorance has been a obstruction and it can be tackled only with awareness. Ganesh festival is best platform for it.” advocate P.K. Pandit. Charu Kishor Mehta, a permanent trustee for life had challenged the continuation of Prabodh Mehta as a trustee of the Lilavati Trust vide an Application No. 5 of 2008 made under Section 41D of the BPT Act 1950. The Joint Charity Commissioner had ordered Prabodh’s removal vide her order dated April 5, 2013 against which Prabodh had filed an appeal in the City Civil Court. Mahesh Jethmalani had contended that as Prabodh had been convicted in a fraud case in Belgium, his acts fell under the definition of the term ‘mischief’ in the Bombay Public Trust Act. Whereas Prabodh’s lawyer P. K. Pandit had argued that the offence was not committed in India and an Indian Court could not take cognisance of it. Further, the Belgium court had later passed ‘rehabilitation order’, which almost nullified the effect of conviction. Also, the conviction was not related to trust property, he had argued. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Will the anti superstition law bill ever go through?

By Suyash Padate

A

decade after it was mooted, the fate of the revolutionary anti-superstition law still hangs in the balance. One does not really know what is happening to this long pending bill which, even after ten years as the first law of its kind in India, has remained only on paper. The state government’s apathy and lethargic approach has put this law on the backburner making the enactment uncertain. Yet Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan repeatedly states that the government is determined to approve this bill despite the opposition. When this day will come is yet to be seen. In July 2003, the state government passed the draft proposal of the anti-superstition law. But since then nothing happened, with the state government sitting on the bill due to opposition from some Hindu hardliners, thus creating a

KNOCK ON WOOD!

number of hurdles in the process of eradicating harmful superstitious beliefs. The bill has been passed in the Assembly but stalled in the Council. The anti-superstition bill proposes an imprisonment of up to seven years for those engaging in black magic and evil practices. The government has made the advertisement, practice, propagation and promotion of such acts non-bailable offences. The act will also cover quacks, including tantriks and unregistered medicos propagating black magic and other dubious practices as cures for ailments. Those who claim to be godmen with powers to conduct surgeries with just their fingers, or who use

SOME PROVISIONS IN THE BILL

The bill covers quacks including tantriks, unregistered medicos and god men propagating black magic and other dubious practices as cures for ailments. A team of policemen will be appointed as vigilance officers to solve such crimes and report them to the nearest police station. The government has excluded from the purview of the law religious rituals and rites that cause no mental, physical and financial harm to individuals. The government has made the advertisement, practice, propagation and promotion of such acts into non-bailable offences. The bill proposes an imprisonment of up to seven years for those engaging in black magic and evil practices.

spells to cure snake and dog bites and more serious illnesses, will be punishable under the law. A team of policemen will be appointed as vigilance officers to solve such crimes and report them to the nearest police station. The frantic efforts of the Maharashtra Andhashradha Nirmulan Samiti (Superstition Eradication Committee) were behind this bill. The Samiti in the leadership of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, is working hard for public awareness against superstitions like witchcraft, ‘bhanamati’, possession by spirits, ghost hunting, miracles, supernatural powers and paranormal claims. Dr Dabholkar and his colleagues have been demanding this law for the last 16 years. Their pursuit seemed successful when the government moved the bill. However, with the government’s current attitude, the Samiti is helpless. When contacted, Dabholkar said, “I don’t know what exactly went wrong. The key point is that we are

not against a belief or superstition. We are against the use of such superstitions or beliefs to cheat people. The Indian Penal Code (IPC) lacked a section or provision that

Dr. Narendra Dabholkar punished people for cheating in the name of belief. The new bill will bridge this gap. That is why we are so vociferously insisting on this new law but the response from the government is unfortunate.” “Warkaris and the Wari will not be affected by the bill at all. Only those who swindle common people need to fear it. It has been pending in the state legislature for the last six sessions. Every time misleading forces rake up issues and the government hesitates to approve the bill. The Warkari movement should not have misconceptions about the bill. The state has conducted four meetings with Warkari leaders and 20 changes suggested by them have been made. Now there is no place for any complaints,” he added further. The bill was initially opposed by all Hindu organizations including the Hindu Janjagruti Samiti, Visha Hindu Parishad and the RSS. This year the Warkaris also joined the protest. They alleged that the bill is anti-Hindu and is being brought to defame the Hindu religion. The government has had a number of talks with the Warkaris over this issue. Speaking to the ADC, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, “There is no reason for Warkaris to agitate against the bill. The state government has held rounds of discussions with them and has amended the bill as per their demands. The government has also provided the draft of the bill to the Warkaris. The state wants to approve the bill and some sections of society are deliberately spreading false information about the provisions it contains.” Chavan also made it clear that the government is firm on its stance to bring the bill into the house. What cannot be ignored is that this vital law has been delayed and how long this delay will continue is difficult to predict. Till then Maharashtra will probably continue to be in the clutches of Babas and Maharajas.

hane has emerged as the most crowded station, having registered 2,32,000 commuters, leaving behind CST which accounts for a footfall of 2,07,000 commuters on a daily average basis. Dombivli has been seen as the second most crowded station, witnessing 2,19,000 passengers daily, followed by Kalyan’s 1,72,000, Ghatkopar’s 1,65,000 and Kurla with its 1,30,000 commuters. According to A.K. Singh, Public Relations Officer, Central Railway, “There has been an increase in the footfall of commuters at Thane since it connects the Main line, Harbour and the TransHarbour, further extending towards Karjat and Kasara which are developing. It becomes easy for passenger connectivity into the city from the industrial belt of Navi Mumbai, where it again branches out into two lines, one going to Thane and the other to Panvel.” Every day, more than 1,000 trains pass through Thane, which has 10 platforms catering to two corridors each for the fast and slow tracks and the Trans-Harbour network. As many as 5560 long distance trains halt at the station. The objective of the Trans Harbour line project was to reduce the load at Kurla. As of May 2013, there were 210 services operating on the Trans-Harbour line, of which 128 are 12-car and 80 are 9-car services.

The issue has been debated in the house and the government had given its reply to it. Earlier, replying to a supplementary query from Kiran Pawaskar (NCP) who wanted the government to probe the activities of all 89 such clubs in Mumbai, the Minister of State for Urban Development Uday Samant stated that the

government will conduct a probe into the activities of all the 89 clubs in Mumbai. He added that the land given to MCA in Kandivali was as per the rules. He also said that the government had vacated the stay imposed on not just the MCA alone. He added that the land given to the MCA was as per the BMC resolution. Samant stated that no other organization had applied for the same. The Minister of State for Urban Development argued that there was no irregularity committed in the construction carried out by the MCA. Diwakar Raote (Sena) argued that the recognition of the MCA should have been withdrawn the moment the stop work notice was issued by the BMC. Raising a supplementary query,

Dr. Shah is seeing clusters of members from the same family suffering from ringworm. “Previously, the person would feel better with a week of medication and would be completely cured after two weeks of treatment. There therefore wasn’t sufficient time for the infection to spread. But now, as the fungus has become resistant to conventional medication and the duration of treatment has increased, other members of the family are contracting the infection,” said Dr. Shah. Fungal infections like ringworms spread due to use of shared articles like towels and linen. In fact, in certain cases, the response to even fungicides that are supposed to kill the fungus is not the way it used to be before,” said Dr. Jadhav. Speaking about the possible reasons for resistance to routine drugs, Dr. Jadhav said, “Resistance develops over a period of time. It may be because of sub-optimal therapy where the dosage was not adequate for a complete cure or because of not completing the

course of medication. Another reason could be the frequent use of the medicine for minor fungal infections or for a skin ailment that doesn’t require that medication.” “This resistance adds to the cost and time of the therapy. Medicines for such resistant cases are more expensive and need to be taken for an extended time period. And when it comes to a family, all members need to be treated simultaneously to prevent further spread of the infection,” added Dr. Shah. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Replying to the query, Samant stated that the BMC in a proposal in 2005 had ruled the land be given to MCA. However, in 2009 the BMC issued a stop work notice to the MCA on the grounds of illegal construction which was confirmed by the state government. However, the state government later vacated the stay. Raising a supplementary query, Kiran Pawaskar (NCP) stated that the Supremo Club opposite Matoshree Club in Jogeshwari also charged membership fees of Rs.10 to Rs.12 lakh. He sought to remind the opposition that the MCA was not a political organization and that it was once headed by former Sena chief minister Manohar Joshi. Kadam added that the land given to MCA was on a No Loss No Profit basis and instead the association was charging a membership fee of Rs. 9 to Rs 12. lakhs. uling NCP members and BJPShiv Sena-PWP opposition members in the legislative council locked horns over the propriety of holding a debate over the latter’s resolution on the irrigation scams. The NCP members argued that the house could not debate on the role of the Governor of Maharashtra and added that the matter was subjudice before the Bombay High Court. The issue led to the chair adjourning the proceedings four times before winding up for the day. Earlier in the day when the house took up the BJP led opposition moved resolution on the issue, Deputy Chairman Vasant Davkhare ruled that the HC had given an interim order on the issue. He stated that all the members of the house should stick to the terms of reference of the resolution and reminded them that the matter was subjudice and wanted the house to

Thousands could lose jobs Petition against government circular on Backward Class By Philip Varghese

n an interesting development in the Bombay High Court, a 47year-old teacher by profession has approached the court with a writ petition challenging the legality and validity of the Government Circular dated 18.05.2013 which allegedly threatens the jobs of thousands of Government employees and officers belonging to ‘Backward Class’ who could not submit their respective caste certificates to the scrutiny committee for the purpose of caste validation till this date. The petitioner, Mahendra Harischandra Chogale, President of Raigad Zilla Koli Samaj and Samajik Vikas Sanstha, has filed the petition on behalf of Mahadev Koli community, which reportedly forms a major sub community out of total ‘Koli’ community. According to petition filed by advocate Ganesh Sovani, representing the petitioner in this matter, “This community has a population around 90 lakh in the state and it is to be noted that the government has already appointed a committee in February 2013 to study the report submitted by the then Education Minister Sudhir Joshi Committee in 2002 which had pointed out how the members of ‘Backward Class’ falsely claim to be the members of SC or ST, and take an undue advantage of the caste certificate by the dubious means by taking recourse to ‘similarity in names’. This newly formed committee, which came into existence by way of Government Notification Dated 25.02.2013, is still to submit its report on or before 24.08.2013, then there is no propriety of issuing the Government Circular in question dated

18.05.2013, as it would amount to putting a cart before the horse. This new committee is supposed to suggest the ways and means as to how the ‘menace’ of procuring the false caste certificates could be curbed.” The petition has sought quashing and setting aside the said Government Circular on the ground of being ‘unreasonableness’ and has also demanded that Dhas Committee report that was tabled on the floor of Maharashtra Legislative Council on 26.07.2010 be seriously debated and its recommendation should also be implemented, if necessary after getting it studied through experts. “This is a multifaceted petition which also seeks protection to those retired and pension enjoying Government Employees who would not be able to submit their caste certificates on or before 31.07.2013 for want of knowledge of the impugned Government Circular Dated 18.05.2013. The government ought to have sufficiently advertised through the print and electronic media to make all the government employees aware of the issuance of Circular dated 18.05.2013 and such employees who could not submit their caste certificates to the Scrutiny committee before the stipulated date, they stand to lose their jobs, who could not submit their caste certificates for validation through their Recruitment and Establishment Officers for want of knowledge of the same,” the petition stated. The petition also said, “When the responsibility is cast upon such Recruitment and Establishment Officers to procure cast certificates from their employees for forwarding to the committee, if such officers have failed to do so, then why an employee should suffer?”

Kiran Pawaskar (NCP) argued that the opposition was not interested in raising the debate while Tawde argued that the government had not given power to the Chitale committee that is probing the scams, and that the committee probe be brought under the provisions of the Commissions of Inquiry Act. Making an intervention, Minister for Industries Narayan Rane quoting rule 34 (2) (1) of the Rules of Business of the House argued that the House could not debate any issue that was under the jurisdiction of any court of the land. n a much needed respite for thousands of families living in pre-1995 buildings of MiraBhayandar, the NCP-led alliance governing the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), has decided to make a significant slash in the structural audit fees. As against the lump-sum charges of Rs.32,000 and Rs.52,000 for a 4-storey and 7 storey building respectively, residents will now have to pay just Rs.400 per flat for the audit of their structures. The action comes pursuant to MBMC Mayor Catlin Pereira’s high level meeting with civic officials and representatives from a panel of five companies which have been

authorised to conduct structural audit on behalf of the municipal corporation. While 56 buildings housing 1,891 families are already on the list of rickety structures for the past several years, the civic administration had issued notices under the BPMC Act to as many as 1,267 pre1995 buildings, asking them to conduct structural stability tests. However owing to the exorbitant charges, the occupants of just 51 buildings have so far responded to the notices and submitted the stability status certificates to the concerned ward offices. “Already facing a threat of eviction, the residents living in pre-1995 structures are mostly from the middle class and lower middle class sections of society and

cannot afford such high fees. This decision will definitely help ease their woes,” said Advocate Ravi Vyas, an NCP corporator and president of Bhayandar (West) ward committee, which has several such structures under its jurisdiction. In the meanwhile, the MBMC has also formed 12 squads comprising of junior engineers and tax department officials who are carrying out inspections to identify extremely dangerous structures in the twin-city. “We intended to carry out the audit, however due to financial constraints, housing society members were unable to do so. But now, with a drastic cut in the existing fee structure, things will become quite easy for us,” said Sanjay Nandu.

gether commendable move worthy of emulation by all newspapers, big and small. I might add that I myself, way back in 1940-41 was teaching Kannada to illiterate leather-workers between 18 and 40 years of age at Dharavi slum. It was a most satisfying experience. It is also nice to know that The Times of India as early as August 15, 2007 was seeking to inspire the disenchanted youth through an integrated campaign that made citizens feel capable of shaping India’s future. “There is a lesson in all of us. Instead of passing the buck or blaming circumstances, it’s time we took the onus on ourselves to lead India.” All this of course, has nothing to do with journalism as such. It comes under the rubric of “Social Service” which can be replicated not just by Corporates but even by individuals. What is more relevant, so far as any newspaper is concerned, is the role of the editor – and his

preferences’ is increasingly the editorial line”. The problem here is: “Who should determine editorial policy”. Should an editor have the right to promote his own whims and fancies? What sort of “freedom” is that? Are editors Gods that they are always on the right side of news? This is a matter for nation-wide discussion, not only among journalists themselves but among readers. Meanwhile, one may ask whatever happened in the Zee Extortion Case in which the news network was alleged to have demanded Rs. 100 crore in return for rolling back its campaign against steel tycoon Navin Jindal’s alleged misdemeanours in coal block allocation. Who is keeping developments on the case away from readers? Again, in the matter of the Ishrat case, how many newspapers have provided appropriate background information?

Fishy angle to Ishrat killing

Hindustan Times (July 8) has provided a part of the conversation that Lashkar-eTaiba’s Pakistani commander Muzammil had with two of the men killed along with Ishrat Jahan. The conversation had to be ‘decoded’. There was reference to paanch number machlee (Fish No. 5) which was decoded as meaning Narendra Modi. There was reference to other ‘fishes’. The late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray was ‘Fish No. 1; VHP leader Pravin Thogadia was ‘Fish No. 2’ and Ashok Singhal ‘Fish No. 3’. Writes Hindustan Times: “The intercepts, accessed by Hindustan Times reveal Muzammil – wanted in the 26/11 Mumbai atM.V. The Ordinary as a Doorway to the Extraordinary W

HEN I was younger, the ordinary sounded boring. I wanted big success, big love, big highs and couldn’t understand anyone who didn’t. After decades of pushing the proverbial boulder up the mountain, I reached (what I’d imagined as) the top. And here’s what the top felt like: Immense satisfaction and gratitude at reaching so many people; exhaustion as big as the gratitude; and being so busy responding to requests for various things that I forgot (or was too busy to notice) that I had a husband, family, dog, garden, an exaltation of hummingbirds outside my window. And although I live in a forest, I forgot the trees themselves. I forgot about anything that wasn’t supporting or contributing to the extraordinary life I was too tired to enjoy. In Into Thin Air, Jon Kraukauer writes that when he reached the top of Mt. Everest he

realized (this is a paraphrase) it was just a square piece of earth with colored flags flapping in the wind. He stopped there for a few minutes and then, exhausted and depleted from climbing 57 hours, he immediately began the descent. After he returned home, he said that what he most appreciated was “being able to get up in the middle of the night, barefoot, and walk to the bathroom.”

MATTER & SPIRIT Like many of us, I believed that there was a destination where the extraordinary (with no down sides) lived. After banging my head against the wall of “it’s out there, it has to be out there” thousands of times, I realized I’d spent my life trying to earn something that was already mine. It turns out that the true extraordinary isn’t reserved for special people or big

achievements or red-carpet-moments. It’s extraordinary to write a book, and it’s extraordinary to eat a grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes and mustard. It’s extraordinary to meet a famous person, and it’s extraordinary to meet the eyes of a grocery store cashier. When I pay attention to what is in front of me, the seemingly ordinary things are backlit with the extraordinary: the hum of the refrigerator, the yellow sponge, the trill of a finch. Now, instead of lurching forward, I step back. Instead of looking for the extraordinary, I look at it. If I get breathless or anxious that I am falling behind and that everyone else will get there before me, I remind myself that the top is just a square of earth you pass on your way down. And that no moment, no place, is better than this breath, this foot touching the cool floor in the middle of the night. — Geneen Roth

RAINY NIGHTMARE ROCKS MUMBAI

THAT sinking feeling returned as the rains continued to lash Mumbai. People on their way to work suffered through their commute. In the name of tax, too much money has been extracted from Mumbaikars without any results. This situation takes place every year and we find ourselves trapped without an escape route. The BMC has failed miserably time and again. Mumbai’s lifeline, the local trains, was disrupted as tracks were flooded, and the pathetic state of the roads added fuel to the fire. The public transport system failed to operate with the crowds collected due to the absence of trains. Women passengers suffered the most as they could not jump out of stationary trains, neither could they get into overcrowded trains and buses. In all, it was a pathetic sight to see people suffer at every nook and corner of the city. It is time to tighten the screws of the BMC officials, as two more months of rain are

The anomalies prevalent between the personal laws of different religions are the root cause of such discrepancies. he did not know. The bigger the celebrity in our country, the bigger the controversy generated and the bigger the charges mostly because of vested interests. If Salman was guilty of anything, he should have been charged ages ago with an appropriate punishment for a person involved in an accident. One hopes the judgment is in the actors favor as he has already suffered over something which happened by accident.

THE law in our country moves at a snail’s pace and one is really shocked that actor Salman Khan has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in a hit-and-run case after 11 years of the incident taking place. The case has been kept ‘alive’ for so many years only because a celebrity is involved. ‘Culpable homicide’ refers to an intention to murder and one wonders why Salman would want to murder somebody whom

LIFE in Mumbai came to a near standstill on 24 July following a local administration warning of heavy rain concurring with ex-

The entire scene reminded me of July 26, 2005 when Mumbai received record rainfall which inundated the city for days, particularly when the showers turned heavy earlier in the day. The municipal corporation could not set up pumps to evacuate floodwater into the sea due to the high tides. The rain however, subsided by the afternoon though the sky remained cloudy foretelling heavy rainfall later in the evening. According to the weather department the city received 215 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours, one of the highest this season. WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF? IT is indeed very shocking to note that 65 MPs sent a signed letter to Barack Obama, asking him to deny Narendra Modi a visa and shun his US visit. One shudders to think whether history will repeat itself. The past indicates that there was strife between the kings, princes and nawabs of various states where they accepted the aid of foreign countries ultimately allowing the British to rule India. It seems like these MPs want Obama to interfere in our national affairs when it is well known that no foreign country should interfere in the internal affairs of another country. Our MPs forget that the US has already stated that Gujarat is the most favourable state for investment in India, and it is because of this opinion that a US business delegation visited Gujarat and met Modi. At the same time, Rajnath Singh should also not try too hard to get Modi a visa. We should be proud of our country, and have confidence in our national dignity and honour. EMBARASSMENT: The need to denounce Modi has overtaken our politicians with such force that they will go to any extent to prove him wrong.

THE petition to US President Barack Obama by 65 Indian MPs seeking the denial of a visa to Narendra Modi is certainly a move befitting our ‘secular’ polity. SCIENCE IS ADVENTURE

Chapter 8 – Understanding Metals and Non-metals Here we will study about the properties of metals and non-metals, occurrence of metals and corrosion of metals.

Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science. — Edwin Powell Hubble Kudos to the team of experts who have prepared the text book of Science and Technology. The book is very attractive, student friendly, easy to use and filled with simple diagrams. One of the highlights of this text book is the shift from deductive to an inductive reasoning. It helps to foster interest in the subject. Many activities are included in each chapter wherein the students have to apply scientific principles to simple, real-life situations. Time spent setting up demonstrations is well spent. A demo shown is not just entertainment but has universal appeal and it is scientifically stimulating to young and old alike. Numerical questions are given at the end of the chapter to improve the computational ability of the students. Clarity of questions has been given maximum priority and a number of activities leading to questions on Higher Order Thinking Skills have been included. In this revised edition, two new chapters relating to environmental issues have been added. Sustaining the environment is of vital importance today and students need to be active participants in the process of preserving the environment.

A thorough study will enable the students to pass their board examination with flying colours. Good Luck!

Chapter 1- School of elements An interesting chapter wherein we learn as we take a walk with scientist Dobereiner who talks about his triads. Limitations here led to what is known as British chemist Newland’s Octaves. This was modified by the Russian chemist Dimitri Mendeleev to form the Periodic Table. Further research led to Modern Periodic Table with 118 elements.

Chapter 4 – The Electric Spark This lesson is about electric current, electrical circuits, resistance of a system of resistors, heating effect of electric current and its applications.

Chapter 12 – The Life Cycle This chapter is about reproduction, modes of reproduction, human reproduction and reproductive health.

Chapter 14 – Striving for better Environment (Part I) It is said, ‘In an underdeveloped country, don’t drink the water; in a developed country, don’t breathe the air.’ This means that we have polluted the earth. This chapter explains in detail the various types of pollution and its effects.

The text book is divided into Section A and Section B. Section A includes chapters 1 to 7.

Chapter 3 – The Acid Base Chemistry ‘Poor Willie worked in a chemistry lab. Poor Willie is no more. For what he thought was H2O was H2SO4!’ This chapter focuses on the characteristics of acids and bases, strength, ionization and reactivity of different acids and bases. It also includes salts useful in daily life.

lot of things are best enjoyed during the monsoon. The taste of bhutta, the piping hot onion bhajiyas, steaming cups of tea — all these exude a particular charm when it’s pouring outside. Similarly, a monsoon massage is another luxury to savour during this season. The best way to forget the back ache inducing potholes, umbrella bruises and frustrating public transport is by heading for a relaxing spa treatment. Several spas across the city realise this and so, we see a lot of these services introducing monsoon special therapies. To find out which ones are the best, the 48hrs team went scouring and brought you the results.

Sofitel’S SoSpa: Short & Sweet Sofitel’s SoSpa at Bandra Kurla Complex has introduced two monsoon special therapies — the Customised Massage With Precious Stones (`3,500) and the Herbal Poultice Relaxing Back Massage (`1,800). My therapist, Daava (meaning the moon in her homeland) was the sweetest and explained why this herbal treatment was ideal for the season. The treatment uses a herbal potli, containing herbal churnam made from different herbs, which is beneficial for joint pain and teel oil mixed with various herbs which restores cartilage. The oils are warm enough to wake your skin from its dry slumber. Daava asked me whether I wanted a soft, medium or firm massage. I asked for a medium and the pressure was perfect. muDraa spa: for a luxurious evening There’s nothing better than a relaxing, rejuvenating break from the chaos and disarray of the rain outside and at Mudraa Spa, you’ll get nothing less. I visited the 3,000 square foot spa to experience their luxurious monsoon special. If you’re worried about travelling to the spa on a rainy day, don’t be, because it’s definitely worth trucking through muck and travelling through water logged roads. Once you push open the (extremely heavy) large wooden doors, you’re engulfed by a wave of tranquility in a lobby where speaking above a whisper seems like a crime. After waiting for them to prepare the fresh fruit scrub, I was escorted up a flight of stairs towards the foot bath area and seated on a plush sofa, while my feet were washed and pressed dry. In my spa room, I was made to lie down to experience the Papaya Body Scrub and wrap, which was a luxurious experience where I was scrubbed, exfoliated, wrapped and massaged expertly. The only downside is that it’s quite messy, so you’ll have to clock in a lot of shower time to scrub it all off. But, after the massage, it’s worth a little extra effort to get papaya and pomegranate pieces from the scrub out of your hair. And, the basil scent of the wrap lingers deliciously on your skin. Next

up was the Chakra Balancing using Hot Stones. Chakra Balancing aside, there are several reasons to opt for this treatment. My therapist was so good, I couldn’t tell where her hands let off and the stones began. The massage was deft, quick but not hurried and so luxurious that I felt like royalty after the relaxing hour. After another shower to wash the oil off, I was treated to a calming facial, perfect for sensitive skin, without too much scrubbing, poking or prodding. Instead of feeling like my skin was being peeled off, I felt soothed and massaged. The three-hour treatment may seem expensive at first glance, but it’s more than worthy of its price tag — especially since picking each treatment individually and putting them together will cost you more in any case. The treatment is apt for the monsoon because it will wash away seasonal irritation, help monsoon weary skin and keep you feeling cosy (courtesy the hot stones) and refreshed. Mucky streets mean your feet get dirty, unreliable public transport means they get tired walking and wearing closed shoes leads to several other problems. But, don’t fret as Aroma Thai promises to help out with their Head to Toe Signature Massage. They first cleanse your feet with a mint and lemongrass foot scrub. This is followed by an intense pure aroma oil massage that improves lymphatic fluid circulation. The massage was good; my therapist used an ample amount of pressure. However, there were some aspects that left me a little… distracted. My therapist’s vibrating cellphone, an amusing bout of hiccups from another and being able to hear the flush from the rest room close by made the 90 minutes more entertaining than relaxing. Would I go back? Yes, not just for the foot massage but for the back massage that was doled out after. Bones cracked and knots kneaded, it gets a thumbs up from me. If 90 minutes is too long for you, they have a Foot Sampler massage for `925 that lasts only half an hour. Overall, a quick but intense experience. price `1,725 for 90 minutes Where Outlets in Bandra, Breach Candy, Kurla, Malad and Ghatkopar Contact 26056871

riChfeel spa: in lavenDer heaven It takes more than a run-off-the-mill massage to fix the damage done by a painful Monday at work. My apprehensions were put to rest by the enchanting Asian décor, rubescent interiors and the waft of peppermint. After a quick form filling process, my therapist led me to my room and so began my Aroma Massage. I picked lavender oil and my masseuse skillfully controlled the pressure, making sure it was not painful. I was in seventh lavender heaven by the end of the relaxing experience which culminated in steam and a shower. Their eye for detail really won me over. The room had everything, from Bisleri bottled water to a hairdryer, Set Wet hair gels and Q-tips. The green tea post massage made Richfeel my favourite spa in the city. Caressaa Day spa: Blissful relaxation

After a tiring, pollution-heavy commute to Saki Naka, any spa treatment less than perfect would have been a big disappointment. However, Caressaa Day Spa surprised me — from the light and nature inspired tunes playing in the background to the Iwish-it-never-ended hot stone body massage. The manager of the cosy spa told me that the Hot Stone therapy was perfect for the monsoon and so, I opted for an hour and a half long session of the same. The treatment started with some much needed stretching of my various body muscles and the therapist expertly kneaded and massaged all my pressure points — I was already in bliss and the treatment hadn’t even begun. As far as the actual treatment is concerned, I just let myself slip into a reverie of sorts with a feeling of relaxation spreading through my body. I don’t think there was a single muscle of my body that the therapist missed during the massage. By the end of it, which came too soon, I was in an exhilarated mental state and a completely revived physical one. The Hot Stone massage at Caressaa Day spa is worth every paisa you’ll be spending on it. Do not miss out on this one. If you’re a Marathi theatre aficionado, NCPA’s forthcoming Marathi theatre festival is not something to miss out on. Dev Goswami tells you more about what you can look forward to

>> National Centre for Performing Arts hosts Pratibimb, a Marathi theatre festival. Apart from watching the plays, you also get to be a part of a discussion with the cast and crew of the play after the performance

f you want to treat yourself to contemporary Marathi theatre, then keep your next weekend free as the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) is hosting Pratibimb — a Marathi theatre festival that aims to promote Marathi theatre and its understanding. You can catch some amazing plays at the festival and each play will be followed by a discussion with the cast and crew of the play. The five-day festival will showcase six plays in all. On Friday, you can catch Dream Society, the story of a writer who wants to peep into the dreams of other people, but has been forbidden by the society and the judiciary. Saturday will play host to Mele Undir, a two-hour abstract play that explores and exposes the turbulent and contradictory ulterior motives. Sunday will have you catching Shivacharitra Ani Ek, which taps on the seldom touched topic of the conflict between Brahmins and nonBrahmins. Ek Diwas Mathakade, which showcases the story of a young man in the prime of his life, searching for a guide, too will be staged later that day. On Monday, the Experimental Theatre will lend its stage to Khoon Karaychay, which is a thrilling story of a murdermystery novelist and a struggling actor, while Tuesday will witness In Min Teen, which is based on the one-act play The Park and tries to show that there is a beast hidden in every person. The plays are interesting and the discussions post the staging make the festival much more insightful. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get exposed to Marathi theatre. Tickets are priced at `200 and `150 and for more information, you can log on to their website www.ncpamumbai.com. hen it comes to jewellery, capturing the essence of nature, though it looks simple, is actually quite hard. At most you’ll come across necklaces and earrings featuring a variety of natural colours or pendants shaped like leaves and flowers. However, that’s about it and the fact that Mirari manages to go beyond that, blew me away and that’s one reason I’m talking about their collection before I introduce their store. The store itself is quite small and looks almost like a passageway. At the end of the store is a table along with a few chairs. You can sit there and browse through their brochure (which tells you about all the pieces under the Mirari brand — even those that are not on display at the moment), speak to the store manager/in-charge about the customisations you’d like to make to their existing items or design your very own statement piece from scratch (of course their set of in-house designers will help). Since Mirari is quite small, I appreciated the fact that number of pieces on display was not excessive, giving the store a subtle, non-blingy ambience. When I visited, they had a variety of jewellery on display including diamonds, pearls and coloured stones. As I mentioned earlier, they go far beyond just replicating the colours of nature. For example, they have earrings in different designs which have the top part (which attaches to your ear-lobe) shaped like a peacock’s head, complete with a colour contrast to ensure that the beak stands out. Another piece that caught my attention was a really simple pearl bracelet which had multi-coloured pearls that would remind you of pebbles on a river bank. The peacock charm cuff (gold with emerald stones) also caught my eye —it wasn’t an unusual design, but it had a smooth and classy finish. A pair of redblue butterfly shaped earrings was also exquisite. Mirari’s collection of diamond jewellery is also impressive but the designs are nothing extraordinary compared to the ones I had just seen. Prices start from `9 lakhs for necklaces, `50,000 for earrings and `10,000 for rings. Quite obviously, you will need the moolah if you’re interested. But, if you are, this store is a must-visit and we are eagerly looking forward to more nature inspired jewellery from them.

TIME FOR SOME

I

n the 90s, when there was a dearth of home décor stores in the city, anyone who bought home décor knew Satguru; especially if they wanted art in their home or needed a new clock. I’ve been to their Bandra branch several times, so when I heard that there was a new outlet in Andheri, I had to head over to take a look. The artsy store at Andheri is very well-placed, but the first thing I noticed was the rather obscure sign that I only spotted because I knew what it looked like. They’ll get a lot of walk-ins because of the lively fountain display by the window but the sign could easily be missed. As is obvious from the window display, the minute you enter Satguru the water fountains hold your attention. From small to big ones in various shapes and designs, the fountains may not be a great addition to a small flat but if you've got a big enough home they're definitely worth a buy. Just make sure you can afford the `45,000 onwards price tag. Once you walk further inside, you’ll be greeted by an orange wall, lined with a range of clocks in different shapes and sizes. They range from `1,250 to 5,000; decent

The new Satguru Arts & Crafts outlet is a great place to go for budgeted décor options. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more

prices considering some look like exorbitantly priced luxury items. There is also a wall filled with interesting art work (from `35,000). From traditional paintings to abstract art in dizzying patterns, the store has something to suit everyone’s taste. But that’s not all. Walking down a narrow flight of stairs will transport you into a very different area from the modern, artsy setup on the higher level. Filled with religious idols and paintings, it’s a quiet space where you can pick up what you need from `1,250 onwards. Their range of Buddha figures stood out. They also have quirky home décor options such as coasters, frames and sculptures. What also caught my eye was a small antique fan. At just `900, the little fan (that actually works) is worth picking up. That said, Satguru Art & Crafts is not a unique store with extraordinary goods. It’s as homely and down-toearth as you can get and there’s a lot on display — which can get a little overwhelming. But, if you’re looking for a funky wall clock, we’d recommend it. With custom framing options as well as ethnic and contemporary options, it’s also a good place for some budget art to put up in your home.

A drunken mistake? The lanes around Khar are filled with a few popular restaurants and bars. Hangover is the latest to join the gang and Dev Goswami finds out how it fares

I

>> The chicken (top) and paneer (bottom) starters are best avoided but the fish fingers (middle) are worth a try. The Mojito (inset) at Hangover (left) was well-made

don’t associate good things with a hangover, but I was intrigued by the name of Khar’s newest bar. The place is divided into two distinct sections; a casual dining space that’s more conducive to conversation and a section with loud music and a dance floor. The first thing I did as soon as I was seated was flip through the bar menu. However, saying that it was a letdown would be an understatement. For a place with such a fun name, I was expecting an interesting menu. But, they had the usual suspects with just a spattering of interesting cocktails. One of them included the Long Beach Iced Tea (a Cointreau and cranberry juice based drink) which is priced for `500. After trying it, I’d say that it was worth the money. It’s quite potent, so bottoms-up competitions are best avoided. We also tried their Mojito (`400) which was well-made and delicious. While the drinks were good, overall we were disappointed by the fact that there weren’t more options on the menu that were unique. We hoped to have better luck with the food menu. We started our meal by ordering the Chicken Shezwan Basil (`290), Fish Fingers (`360), Corn Cheese Balls (`210) and Paneer Peshwari Tikka

BATTLE IT OUT AT BURGS Burgs is now open at Ghatkopar. Tejasvi Desai tells you whether you should stop to have a bite or walk past

(`280). The fact that the simple Fish Fingers was the best of the lot should indicate how the rest were. The chicken was too spicy, the paneer, while it had a flavourful coating, was bland after a few bites. The corn cheese balls were nice but nothing great. We then ordered a Mexican Vegetarian Pizza (`280) which was average at best and the Grilled Lemon Chicken in Lemon Sauce (`290), which was the star of our meal. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the lemon sauce added a good kick. Considering how the night had been, we weren’t expecting such a good dish and so, we’d have to say we were pleasantly surprised. Should you visit Hangover? We wouldn’t recommend it. The place is not worth your time or money. If you’re in the vicinity, sure, you can pay it a visit. But, don’t get fooled by the name — it’s just another run-off-the-mill resto-bar. B

urgs comes across as an extended version of a restaurant outlet at a food court in comparison to the other fancy food joints it is located next to. With no tablecloths to pull or cutlery to throw off the table, it is the safest place to head to with a group of naughty children. Customers are expected to place their orders at the counter and wait for food at the tables. But, the self-service system clearly doesn’t work for them, as service was inefficient and we could see customers cancelling their orders in displeasure and walking out. Although the menu offers good variety, several options were unavailable to us at the time. Waiters kept switching up the

orders and a few customers had to literally battle it out with them to get the correct burgers. After all the chaos and a wait time of over half an hour for two burgers, drinks, a side and a salad, we ripped open the paper packaging to finally taste their fare. The Arabic Salad (`115) was disappointing as it was bland and lacked any distinct flavour. We tried the Crispy Onion Rings (`75) with their homemade extra hot Inferno sauce (`18) and Chipotle mayo sauce (`18). The onion rings, while tasty, were more chewy than crunchy. The Inferno sauce was extra sweet but the Chipotle mayo sauce accompanied the rings well. We spotted two exciting flavours in their

ice cream shakes, out of which Vanilla & Lavender with Marshmallows (`89) wasn’t available. We tried the Peanut Butter & Jelly (`89) and Burnt Caramel (`89), which tasted good but were thinner in consistency than we would have liked. The burgers looked humongous on the menu, but looks are deceiving. The combination of the honey spiced corn kernels and tangy sauce did not work well in the Corn Chaos Burger (`130). However, we had a little more luck with the Creole Chicken Burger (`150). Burgs might be having teething problems, but if they want to have any luck in an already packed food court, they need to pull up their socks.

Yes, Bandra has space for another cafe. Eat Deli, on Pali Naka, has taken over the space China Lounge left vacant over of year ago. The menu, however, is more comparable to what was served up by China Lounge's predecessor, Open Bake. They've got the usual fast food favourites such as pastries, pizzas, pasta and burgers. And it isn't cheap for a cafe. You’ll be expected to shell out about `500 for a main, `250 for a decent sized pastry. Where: Pali Naka, Opposite Movie Empire, Bandra (West)

REMEMBERING CHILDHOOD Tell us about your new book. From the first day to the last day of school, the book is about growing up. It’s about happiness, tears, nostalgia and the emotions that one goes through during their days of growing up. It’s a book that celebrates nostalgia and what it meant to grow up in the ’80s. There was a rat race to come first in school and high expectations from parents to do well in studies. What was your source of inspiration for Like It Happened Yesterday?

I graduated from the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. But I would say that the best academic experience I had was during my school days. While I was finishing my last book, I needed a new topic and so I decided to go ahead and write about my own experiences. Where and when do you like to write? There is no specific time. I should be in the mood to write. If I am not in the mood, I cannot force myself to write. I usually prefer writing in the morning while having my cup

of tea. That’s when fresh thoughts come to my mind.

I like Nicholas Sparks. He is phenomenal when it comes to writing human emotions.

How long does it take for you to complete a book? On average, it takes me about a year.

What advice do you have for someone who’s just starting out with writing? Before you start, find out the real reason you want to write. Your writing should have a purpose. Do not write just because you’re inspired by someone or a bunch of people you know are writing a book. Choose to write only if you’re passionate about writing. Also, do not imitate anyone else’s style of writing; discover your own style.

What are your top five favourite books? A Walk To Remember, The Notebook, The Kite Runner, For One More Day and Tuesdays with Morrie. Who is your favourite author?

« TOP 5: TRAVEL SHOWS WE LOVE Has the travel bug bitten you at a time when you can’t travel? Satiate your itch with these great travel shows, says Rhea Dhanbhoora out of BouNDs

No ReseRvatioNs

If your remote has flicked you over to Discovery’s Travel & Living channel and Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations is on — stop and watch! You’ll be hooked after that. The controversial chef indulges in controversial meals and won’t hold anything back. The show is not just about the food, but treats you to a meticulous combination of food and travel.

Globe-trotter Ian Wright is everyone’s favourite travel host and we understand why. If you’re in the mood not just for travel but also a pocketful of laughs, there’s no better show to tune into. Travel with him from one corner of the world to the next, learning more about food, culture and history while soaking up his interesting tidbits on TLC.

Globe Trekker

One of the biggest travel shows, Globe Trekker, is the one show where you’ll see the entire world. Forget popular destinations and travel through little villages, quaint lanes and regional communities. Across 16 seasons, the show, which airs on TLC, has seen lands from The Balkans and Caribbean Islands to the Holy Lands in Israel and the Ring of Fire.

Sometimes, TV shows with exotic destinations can be more of a bummer, especially when you’ve got no way of heading over there in a hurry. That’s why we love Weekend Destination. The show, which airs on Travel Trendz Television, offers you a getaway from the buzz of city life, showing you little spots close to major cities in the country.

No Big Deal

Neha Dixit, the host of the NDTV Good Times show, is mostly the reason you must watch it. She’s fun and adventurous, diving deep into adventure instead of just telling you about it. We love how she takes you on trails across luxury destinations on shoe-string budgets and how every holiday she tailor-makes is a mixed bag of fun and culture.

Further, while margins were weak in 1Q on one-off discounts, we expect a favorable trend going forward on healthy revenue growth and INR tailwinds. We raise our FY14/FY15 estimates by 4%/8% and upgrade the stock to BUY (TP Rs 160) on a healthy earnings growth trajectory and attractive valuations (10x FY14 P/E). Maintains topline revenue guidance; outlook for 2H healthy: KPIT maintained its FY14 US$ revenue growth guidance at 14-16% on the back of an improving outlook for SAP services in 2H, a healthy large-deal pipeline and expectations of continued growth in IES and Engineering Services. Overall, we remain comfortable on KPIT’s medium-term growth prospects (14.5% US$ rev CAGR over FY13-15), as management focus on top clients and cross-selling capabilities start yielding results. Improving margin outlook: The management has indicated to 100bps margin expansion in FY14, which implies an improving margin trajectory going forward. We upgrade our FY14/15 EPS by 4%/8% on INR depreciation and see room for further upgrades on continued execution and persistent weakness in the INR. View: The stock is trading at 10x FY14 P/E and looks attractively valued. We upgrade KPIT to BUY (from HOLD) with a March’14 TP of Rs 160 (Rs 145 earlier) based on 10x fwd P/E. Healthy quarterly revenue growth outlook, a positive margin trend and improved cash generation would be the key growth drivers in our view.

Karvy Stock Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on Unichem CMP: Rs. 165 Target Rs. 240

Unichem’s revenues decreased by 0.4% YoY to Rs. 2,622mn in Q1FY14, as against our estimates of Rs. 2,633mn. Operating margins improved to 19.1% as compared to 18.0% in Q1FY13. Net Profit has grown by 8.9% YoY to Rs.361mn. Margins Stable: EBITDA Margins have been reported at 19.1% with significant improvement of 110bps YoY. It is mainly on account of better gross margins. However, Staff cost has increased significantly this Quarter to Rs.413mn compared to Rs. 347mn in preceding Quarter. Valuation and Outlook: We have reduced our revenues by 1.8 % to Rs 12.4 bn for FY 14E and by 1.6 % to Rs 14.9 bn for FY 15E. The downgrade has been on account of lower growth of 10 % and 14 % factored for domestic formulations. We downgrade our price target by 2 % to Rs 240 based on 11.8x FY 2014E. We maintain our BUY rating on the stock. Additional trigger could be announcement of CRAMS deal which has not been factored.

ICICI Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Yes Bank CMP: Rs. 373 Target Rs. 588

Yes Bank’s Q1FY14 core performance was largely in line with our estimates, led by: a) NIMs at 3.0%, stable sequentially, aided by improved CASA proportion at 20.2% of total deposits, and b) continued traction in fee income, which grew 38.6% YoY. Operating performance at 47.9% YoY is higher than estimates, led by strong trading-related gains of Rs1.74bn, despite the cost-to-income ratio rising 480bps QoQ (ex-treasury) to 45%. Asset quality remains one of the best in class with the gross NPA ratio at 0.22% and net NPA ratio at 0.03%. Restructured assets saw a 2bps decline QoQ to 0.29% of loans. Tier-I ratio (including Q1FY14 profits) stood strong at 9.5% as per Basel-III. With the recent RBI actions negatively impacting overall business growth outlook, we reduce our FY14 business growth estimate for Yes Bank by 390bps. This provides leg-room on the capital front and therefore the pressure to raise fresh equity subsides. Hence, we revise our book value estimate lower by ~15% and earnings estimate lower by ~7% for FY14E. Yes Bank continues to report best-in-class RoEs at ~23% for FY14E and asset quality with Gross NPA at 0.3% for FY14E with Tier-I ratio at 9%. Dilution pressure subsides; Maintain BUY with reduced target price: We maintain our positive stance on Yes Bank given its track record of system-leading growth without comprising on asset quality and profitability metrics. However, given the RBI’s recent measures to stem INR volatility, visibility on interest rate cuts and improvement in GDP growth have further clouded business growth prospects, and we revise business growth lower by 390bps for FY14E. This effectively postpones the need of capital dilution and thus our estimated FY14E book value stands reduced by ~15%. Maintain BUY with reduced price target price of Rs 588, with a target multiple of 2.5x FY15E Adj. BV. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2013

He is the only South Indian actor who has inspired several Bollywood actors with his charm, persona and acting capabilities. Back home in Chennai, he is considered the God of Acting. He is the one and only Kamal Haasan who takes out some time from his busy schedule and talks to Faisal Saif. Don’t you think the second part of Vishwaroopam is coming out very soon? Or do you plan to cash in on the publicity from part one? I don’t make films for publicity. I want them to be enjoyed by my audience. Generally, people wait for a year and then decide on a film’s sequel. But I was sure from the beginning that I would bring out a second part. Vishwaroopam 2 is not my arrogance. Rather it is my confidence.

Did you write the sequel while you were writing Vishwaroopam? I had written the film in two parts and wanted to tell my audience the complete story. We decided to do it in two parts so that both parts work individually. What is Vishwaroopam 2 all

While watching Vishwaroopam, you will feel a certain curiosity about some characters in the film. We thought we’d be able to solve that curiosity with a second serving.

How do you plan to market the sequel? Marketing is as crucial and difficult as film-making, if not more. I want someone who can do that properly, otherwise I can’t make films. Some people took advantage of the situation during Vishwaroopam and made lots of money, and I’m glad about that.

about? I am aware of the fact that my first film went through many hurdles as people created issues without watching it. The

second part is both a sequel and prequel and will focus on the romantic and emotional aspect. It will also be technologically more advanced.

Are you planning to make other films in Bollywood after Vishwaroopam? We are ready with many scripts and are looking for the right kind of producers who can take the films up north. I can’t take risks all the time.

Your work speaks for itself: Javed Ali People started recognising Javed Ali after the song ‘Ek din teri rahon mein…’ from Naqaab (2007). In a short period of time the talented singer with a mellifluous voice has given chart toppers for films like Jodhaa Akbar, Ghajini, Delhi-6, Raanjhanaa, Jab We Met etc. SUNEEL V. GAUR and RAJESH V. GAUR met him for an interview. Excerpts:

You have sung for A.R. Rehman in Raanjhanaa, Your views on his music? Rahman Sir’s music just grows. The melodies created by him are amazing. He’s a genius. ‘Tum Tak’ from Raanjhanaa is not like any other love song, it showcases teenage love—full of fun, mischief, desperation and romance—and has the potential to make the audience fall in love again.

Are you satisfied with your achievements? Whenever I sing a song, I just want it to reach out to the au-

dience. I just want people to love my songs. There is still so much left to achieve and explore.

Who has been your inspiration or guru? Being a big fan of Ghulam Ali during my growing up years, main unko apna guru manta hoon. I never really sat down and learnt music from him, but I learn only by listening to his songs and interacting with him. As a mark of respect to Ghulam Ali saab I changed my name from Javed Hussain to Javed Ali.

Your favourite songs so far? My personal favourites are Tayyab Ali… from Once upon a Time In Mumbai Dobara, the qawali ‘Mera Murshid…’ DDay and ‘Tum Tak…’ from Ranjhaana.

What are your ambitions at this stage? I want to be a very good human being and a proficient singer. I want to experiment with my singing and want songs that challenge me as a singer.

SINGING 60!

By Chaitanya Padukone

P

rolific Bollywood movie producer-composer and iconic bhajan and ghazal singer Anup Jalota who celebrates his 60th birthday this weekend with a private musical ‘Jalwa-e-Jalota’ marked by a Venus compilation album release, feels that this diamond jubilee is more of a rocking re-start but with a streak of maturity. His only regret is that he wishes he could continue to learn music from his late fatherguru Purshottamdas for many more years. The ‘bhajan samrat’ who has broken and set phenomenal records in devotional basic repertoire, was unperturbed that his recent wacko comedy movie Boyss Toh Boyss Hain missed the target at the box-office. Being optimistic, he is all set to release his next film venture. “My upcoming project is titled Hum Baaja Bajaa Denge and is directed by the talented veteran Chandra Barot who helmed the original landmark movie Don (1978) starring Amitabh Bachchan. An unusual subject Hum Baaja… has the backdrop of a TV reality show where a young girl is kidnapped as part of a prank. It takes a

comic-serious turn when she turns out to be the daughter of the Chief Minister! What follows is a rollercoaster ride with elements of gripping suspense in typical Chandra Barot style. “This movie will prove that Barot still has the fire in him with pro-active support from his wife Deepa,” reveals the jovial Jalota who is also known for his witty wisecracks. Isn’t it true that he performs an item song of sorts with his close buddy ‘ghazal badshah’ Pankaj Udhas in the movie? After a hearty laugh, he discloses, “It’s not the typical item song that we see in every third Hindi movie, but a fun opening cameo number sung by both Pankaj and me and also based on us.” “The actual sizzling item number will have glamour-diva Pooja Misrra gyrating to it,” adds a fitness-conscious ‘rejuvenated’ Anup whose birthday resolution is to ‘weight-and-watch’. Commenting on today’s frequent TV musical reality shows, the outspoken Jalota feels that any short-cut to instant popularity minus the constant struggle and regular ‘riyaaz’, faces the danger of being short-circuited from public memory.

omedy has no limitations and this time, its horizon has been well explored by director Shashant A. Shah of Chalo Dilli fame who brings to India the first revenge comedy—Bajatey Raho. This movie is not only a perfect amalgamation of comedy and reality but also brings an array of brilliant actors who are forced to believe in the concept of con versus con in order to win over evil. Know a little more about the movie as we get candid with Tusshar Kapoor who plays Sukhi in the film. Tusshar Kapoor in Bajatey Raho

How was your experience working with Shashant

A Shah? I had seen Chalo Dilli and wanted to work with Shashant since then. I feel Shashant is a very involved and sincere director. He is a complete producer’s director and in my career, so far, I have never seen a director so economical. Shashant eats, drinks and sleeps with his film while on schedule. He is one of the hardest working directors I have known so I just hope that all his hard work translates well on screen. How did the entire shooting schedule go? It was a very tough schedule. In fact, by the time we were midway, I was al-

ready looking forward to a vacation. Everything was well planned. There was no slackness in work, it was fun because the long working hours made sure that everyone was constantly on their toes. This gave us all a lot of time to interact with each other and bond. There was constant chatting going on behind the camera. I have never really worked with these people before so by the time we packed up, we had all become good friends. There was more chemistry between us boys off screen than on screen with other actors. How was your bonding with other members of the cast over the long shoot?

Vinay and I have known each other socially so we hit off well from the start but Ranvir and Dollyji are two people I had never interacted with. It was very refreshing. The whole unit was like a family, we had a lot of time to hang out together in Delhi. Everybody would keep pulling each other’s leg and I hope that it totally translates on screen as this was exactly what Shashant wanted. He wanted us to have fun and that fun to get into our characters and reach the audience. And over and above all of this was my bonding with Ravi Kissen. He is a very senior actor and very desi at heart. We to talked for hours and enjoyed each other’s company.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2013

veryone loves a love story, Bollyood does too, and Indian audiences can never tire of it. In the land where Laila-Majnu, Heer-Ranjha, Sohni-Mahiwal, ShrinFarhad, Dhola-Marwan, Jesal Toral are part of folklore, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is still an inspiration for love stories. Wherever warring clans or social differences are the main conflict in a love story, Romeo and Juliet come to mind— whether it is Achut Kanya way back in 1936, when caste came in the way of a couple in love, to Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988 to Ishaqzaade in 2012 and dozens of films about starcrossed lovers in between. A new version of Romeo and Juliet, called Issaq, comes out today, set amidst the bloody feuds of lawless Banaras. Yet another film on the same story, Ram Leela, is set in Gujarat, is under production. One can see why this plot appeals to Indians. Even with all pretensions to modernity, a large part of the country is still in the feudal age, and the rest suffers from nostalgia about the good old days of the real India. That’s why even in 2013, there are Khap Panchayats, and groups of people (mostly men) who believe that inter-caste marriages should not be allowed, and inter-reli-

Deepak’s splendid super chor act! Deepak Dobriyal has made his mark in movies like Omkara, Teen Thay Bhai, Tanu Weds Manu among others. His latest film Chor Chor Super Chor is about to release. He talks to ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi about his latest film. Tell us something about the film Chor Chor Super Chor. The movie is about a thief who is trying quit the underworld and live a honest life. But he gets cheated by ‘decent’ people so he goes back to his earlier world and forms his own gang of thieves.

Describe your character in the film. My character is the main chor in the film. I am playing the lead. The chor who gives up everything for a decent lifestyle but when conned by ‘good people’ he plans revenge and starts his own gang of chors.

How did you like working on the film? It was amazing. It was a funfilled experience. It’s a different kind of comedy which you don’t normally get to see. It’s more than jokes or punch lines. It’s based on everyone’s journey in life. We all enjoyed shooting for this movie.

Tell us something about your journey as an actor from Omkara? After Omkara, I got many movie offers. But I was choosy about what I picked and if the script is good. I even work for short films (free) with students and freshers if i like the script and I give my 100 per cent.

Which films of your s have given you the maximum satisfaction as an actor? As an actor I would say Omkara. I’ve got full satisfaction from movies that I have done till date.

Everyone, at some point of the other, must have fallen in love with someone the parents/family/community disapproved of, and regret having caved in to the pressure. nil Kapoor is a happy man after daughter Sonam tasted success recently with both Ranjhaana as well as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and wants her to continue with the hard work. “I am happy with her success, every parent is happy when their kids do well. I am happy that she is happy. I want her to keep same kind of energy, enthusiasm and hard work and just be the same,” Anil told reporters here at an event. The industry veteran feels that success

and failures are part of the job and one must accept that. “She has grown with every film and I am happy for her. Success and failure are part of the profession as there are films that will do well and some may not, there will be ups and downs but one must continue to work hard,” Kapoor said. ticular—continues to be inspired by Shakespeare, but it’s more the period drama and classical language that they go for; their society has moved away from the tradition of families dictating choice of spouse. There is a fair amount of violence in Romeo and Juliet, and promos of Issaq indicate a full blast of mofussil aggression and the emphasis on outdated notions of honour and tribal codes still adhered too. At the core of all the bombast are two teenagers discovering love. Which is something that will, hopefully, never go out of style.

horeographer-director Prabhu Deva feels southern remakes are getting recognised in Bollywood because of the presence of big stars. Prabhu Deva has made three films in Hindi and all of them have been remakes. Two of his films, Wanted (remake of Telugu film Pokiri) and Rowdy Rathore (remake of Telugu film Vikramarkudu) had names like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. “The remakes of south films are getting highlighted now because of big stars here. Prabhu is happy with the response his latest released romantic film has received. “We are happy with the response to the film and Girish. I will do whatever suits me. I am waiting for a script that will be as intense and lovely as Raanjhanaa,” Dhanush told reporters here last night.

The ‘Kolaveri Di’ star praised his director Anand L. Rai but admits that he did not anticipate this kind of response from the industry and audience. “I did not anticipate this kind of response. It is much more than we had wanted. We had expected less but God is kind and generous to us. It is one man’s miracle— Anand L. Rai, it is one man’s achievement. It’s not an easy thing to pull off a film with a

newcomer as I was from the south,” the actor said. Even his father-in-law, Rajnikanth and his fans down south have liked the film and Dhanush is happy with the response coming his way. For Raanjhanaa, Dhanush had teamed up with Sonam Kapoor and he wouldn’t mind sharing screen space with the actress again. “I would love to work with Sonam, she is my best friend,” he said.

UNHAPPINESS BREWS IN IBL Shuttlers Sanave, Rupesh hint at pullout as they cry foul on their prices being slashed

N

EW DELHI: The first shuttle is yet to be struck but the discontent with the Indian Badminton League is only rising with men's doubles specialists Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas hinting at a pullout, claiming that their base prices too were slashed without informing them. After star women's doubles players Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa's criticism of the organisers for reducing their base price at the players' auction without informing them, Rupesh and Sanave have also complained of getting a raw deal. Sanave and Rupesh, who were ranked 13th in the world at one stage of their career, were picked up by Pune Pistols for USD 5,000. "It is a shocker for me. I am really sad. In

the contract it was clearly mentioned that senior Indian players who have played in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Thomas Cup and Super Series events will have a base price starting from USD 15,000. But I don't know what happened," Rupesh told PTI. "I never speak up but this time I could not keep quiet. I have to take a stand soon. Sporty Solutionz (joint organisers of IBL) has sent me the contract. They have asked me to sign it and send it back to them but I don't know what to do," he said. Rupesh's doubles partner, Sanave too cried foul over the IBL organisers decision to reduce their base price. "I signed the contract for USD 15,000 but then I heard from media that our base price was slashed to

Anand Pawar disappointed over auction snub M UMBAI: Anand Pawar, ranked 43rd in the world and a member of the Indian Sudirman Cup team, has expressed his disappointment at not being bought. “Sad and unhappy to see that I haven’t been picked in the Indian Badminton League auction even after making a semi-final of the India Super Series event a few months back and also being part of the Indian Team for the Sudirman Cup. Could it just be bad luck or...?,” he has noted on his Facebook page. “Well, it’s hard to think of next year when 13 Indian men’s singles players have been sold and I’m the only one who hasn’t!” Pawar added.

Pawar and Ajay Jayaram, ranked 24th in the world behind the highest ranked Indian Parupally Kashyap (13th) and Gurusaidutt (21st), were the last two men’s singles players from India who were available for selection at the auction, but by then most of the franchises had exhausted their money in buying other players. “All the Indian players were put together and a lot was taken and these two were the last names to be picked. While Ajay was picked (by Hyderabad Hotshots for USD 25,000), Pawar was left in the lurch as the lone Indian player in the top 14 ranks not to be bought,” the sources said.

USD 5,000. That is very difficult to accept," said Sanave. "The organisers said the base price of all senior Indian players, who have played in international tournaments such as Commonwealth Games, will start from USD 15,000. I really don't understand what went wrong. I got a call yesterday from IBL asking me to sign the contract and then only I got to know about it," he added. Rupesh and Sanave are the latest to express their dissatisfaction over IBL organisers decision to slash the base prices of some Indian players. Commonwealth Games gold medallists Jwala and Ashwini, who were icon players for the event, had earlier blasted the IBL organisers after their USD

50,000 base tags were reduced to USD 25,000 after they went unsold at Sunday's closed bidding. Men's singles specialist Arvind Bhat, however, was satisfied with the amount he had managed to fetch from the auction. "When I had signed the contract my base price was not mentioned but I'm okay with my base price. I think it is great a initiative and I am positive about it," said Arvind, who was bought by Banga Beats, the Bangalore franchise, for USD 7,500. "It is still a lot of money which the players will make for just two weeks of event. I have played in the German league for many years, so I know how important a step like IBL is," he added.

EW DELHI: Indian girls put up a dominant show to sweep aside Japan 3-0 and book their place in the quarterfinals of the World Junior Women's Squash Team Championships being played in the historic city of Wroclaw, Poland. India finished second in their Pool C behind England and will take on the fourth seed Hong Kong in the quarters of the biennial World Squash Federation event at the Hasta La Vista Club. Harshit Kaur Jawanda was the first to take the court against Risa Sugimoto. Harshit took control of the match early on, pinning Risa to the back corners and pounced on her opponent's errors to win the first game 11-6.Harshit continued to dominate the front of the court and Risa could not counter her ball control as the Indian raced away with the second game. Risa pulled out all the stops in an amazing display of athleticism as she retrieved every ball and played absolutely wonderful drops to take the third game on 5. However, the Delhi girl reasserted her dominance in the fourth game, winning it 11-4 in 22 minutes to put India 1-0 ahead in the pre-quarters. Lakshya Ragavendran showed off her array of strokes in racing away to a twogame lead against Satomi Watanabe. The Japanese youngster could do precious little in the face of aggressive strokeplay from Lakshya. But, Satomi hung on and waited for her chances edging the third game 12-10. Lakshya had match ball at 10-9 but could not convert allowing Satomi to reduce the deficit. In an extremely tight fourth game, Lakshya held her nerve to close out the match at 1412, giving India an unassailable 2-0 lead and a place in the lasteight. In the final rubber, Sachika Ingale was largely untroubled in what turned out to be a routine win against Momoka Nakahira in 20 minutes to complete the 3-0 rout. Results: Harshit Kaur Jawanda bt Risa Sugimoto11-6 11-3 5-11 11-4 Lakshya Ragavendran bt Satomi Watanabe 11-5 11-7 10-12 14-12 Sachika Ingale bt Momoka Nakahira 11-9 11-8 11-4.

Promising shuttlers thrilled and surprised N

EW DELHI: India’s promising shuttlers such as K Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth are both thrilled and excited with the interests the franchises showed on them in the Indian Badminton League auctions held here on Monday. 20-year-old Srinkath, who was bagged by Awadhe Warriors for a pay cheque of USD 34,000 said here today: “This is unbelievable. I didn’t expect it. It felt extremely good to know that the franchisees were competing with each other to bid for me.” The 20-year-old who had stunned world No. 4 Boonsak Pon-

sana in the finals of the Thailand Open Grand Prix last month and hails from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, added, “My parents are very happy that the sport is getting me financial rewards. It will also give me an opportunity to play in a team event.” Sai Praneeth, a 20-year-old shuttler, who stunned former Olympic champion Taufiq Hidayat in the latter’s farewell match, was bagged by Krrish Delhi Smashers for USD 40,000. “It’ a huge motivation for a player like me. I was expecting around USD 20,000, but this was surprising,” he said.

EW DELHI: The Indian Badminton League's glamour quotient has gone up by quite a few notches with a consortium involving former cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar and Telugu actor Nagarjuna buying the event's Mumbai franchise. The consortium also includes former manager of the Indian cricket team and businessman Vankina Chamundeswaranath. The team will be called Mumbai Masters. "I am proud to be associated with badminton which I've always admired and passionately followed and played a bit as a fan. The sport has produced legends and recorded many milestones for India and I hope my association with the Indian Badminton League proves to be a worthy contribution to the great sport of badminton," Gavaskar said in a release. The USD one million league is set to launch on August 14 with some highvoltage action expected between PVP's Hyderabad Hotshots and BOP Group's Banga Beats. A total of 90 matches will be played in the IBL which will feature six franchises. The IBL will be held in six cities from August 14-31. ARARE: An expectedly comfortable win to start with, the young Indian team under Virat Kohli would look to continue asserting its supremacy over minnows Zimbabwe when the two sides clash in the second one-dayer of the ongoing five-match series here tomorrow. In a perfect start to the tour, India thrashed Zimbabwe by six wickets with Kohli leading from the front, scoring a hundred yesterday. But the win was not without a few glitches

wickets in his 10 overs. The Zimbabwean batsmen did not exactly disgrace themselves and posted a decent total which was, however, no match to the sheer individual brilliance of Kohli. Among others, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan had a bad day but they too should get some big scores in the series which has been described as being terribly lopsided despite India being a depleted team. Another positive to emerge for India apart from Kohli’s swashbuckling knock, was the half-century by debutant Ambati Rayudu. A veteran of first-class cricket, Rayudu finally got his ODI break yesterday and delivered well with a calculated 63-run knock. If he can continue in the same vein in the coming games, the 27-year-old’s confidence would certainly head northwards. It would be interesting to see whether the Indians stick to the same line-up or try out the likes of batsman Cheteshwar Pujara and spinner Parveez Rasool. For the Zimbabweans, Raza and Chigumbura showed that application and patience can make the home team a lot more competitive than many would perceive it to be. Definitely needed a kick, admits Warner

RETORIA: David Warner has said he needed to be dropped from the Australian Test squad following his pub brawl with Joe Root during which the Aussie landed a punch at the Englishman. Warner’s ban over the incident that took place in a Birmingham pub during the Champions Trophy cost him his place in the first two Tests at Trent Bridge and Lord’s. But he is back in contention for a recall in the third Test at Old Trafford after his 193 during the ongoing unofficial Test match against South Africa A in Pretoria. “Sitting on the sidelines and copping that punishment and not being selected it was a thing that I needed,” Warner was quoted as saying by ‘ESPNcricinfo’. “I definitely needed a kick up the bum. It was my own fault the incident that happened. My job was then to support our players, support the rest of the group and do everything I could to help them prepare for the games. I did that and I know the other guys on the tour did the same thing. We’ve all been working very hard,” he added from South Africa. Warner was sent on the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa after being left out of the Trent Bridge Test as Cricket Australia felt the opener needed some time in the middle.

in the shorter format. “It’s not for me or you to judge whether Pujara is in the scheme of things for the 2015 World Cup but he certainly has the game and the temperament. But most important thing is what selectors think about Pujara. He has shown at the domestic level that he can play the shorter version also. I don’t see any reason why Pujara won’t be successful in ODIs,” he said. Talking about Shikhar Dhawan, the stylish right-hander of 90’s felt that the Delhi opener will only get better with time. “Great players are those who improve and get better with passage of time. Shikhar has started off brilliantly and he will only improve as he works on his flaws. Even Sachin Tendulkar had flaws and he has continuously worked on them,” Jadeja said. On whether playing too many horizontal bat shots can cause him trouble, Jadeja said, “If he is a puller, it’s good but if he is a compulsive puller, it’s not good. Anything done out of choice is good but not out of compulsion.”

EW DELHI: Former India ODI captain Ajay Jadeja feels that Ambati Rayudu’s international debut will be an inspiration for all those “eternal hopefuls” who want to don the national colours. “If I can remember, Rayudu started playing first-class cricket when I was playing for India. It took him 10 long years to finally make his senior international debut. This shows that in every aspect of life, one should never lose hope,” Jadeja told PTI on the sidelines of a prize distribution ceremony of TERI. “I don’t think many people would have thought that Rayudu will manage to play for India although his talent was unquestionable. He played in ICL which was an unsanctioned league and then changed states. “Once you have gone through all these, there is a tendency of selectors not to pick you. What went in Rayudu’s favour was his experience at first-class level and a solid game that he possesses,” 42-year-old Jadeja, who played 196 ODIs and 15 Tests for India, said. Jadeja is also hopeful that Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara will also prove his mettle

Usain Bolt says doping scandals have ‘set us back’ L

ONDON: Insisting that he is running clean, Usain Bolt today said the recent spate of doping scandals to hit athletics will damage the sport but won’t affect his own preparations for the upcoming world championships. The world’s fastest man, though, stopped short of condemning fellow Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson or American rival Tyson Gay, whose failed doping tests have left the sport in turmoil ahead of the worlds in Moscow next month. “Definitely it’s going to set us back a little bit,” Bolt said in London ahead of a Diamond League meet his first competition in the city since his three gold medals at last year’s Olympics. “But as a person I can’t focus on this.

“I still have world championships, everyone is stepping up their game so I have to really focus on that. ... I am just trying to work hard, run fast and hopefully help people to forget what has happened, and just move on.” In his first public comments since news of the high-profile doping cases broke, Bolt promised that he won’t be the next sprint star to be embroiled in a scandal. “I was made to inspire people and to run, and I was given the gift and that’s what I do,” the six-time Olympic champion said. “I am confident in myself and my team, the people I work with. And I know I am clean. “So I’m just going to continue running, using my talent and just trying to improve the sport.”
