or all those who want to know whether www.policeheart.com is genuine or not, the ADC has good news and bad news. The good news is that it is genuine alright. The bad news (if it can be termed so) is that it is for Ahmedabad alone! Yesterday, social networks were literally buzzing with the news of the website in the morning. According to those who forwarded it to myriad friends along the social network lifelines like Facebook and Twitter, as well as phone messages and Whatsapp, women are urged to register their mobile numbers along with the contact numbers of ten relatives as a safety precaution, should they land in threatening situations. Needless to state, the trigger for the buzz was the recent assault upon a journalist last week. Barely had the news of the website been welcomed and evidently tried out when, a new set of messages were passed around declaring the whole thing a fake, possibly a ploy to get information as part of a phishing operation. The ADC decided to do some checks to find out more about this website. Here is how we went about it: Though the site www.policeheart.com did not open up twice or three times in the beginning, the URL did open up a little later. Exploring the site revealed that, though the “About Us” option (a very basic page of every website) where people could know what the website was all about, wasn’t present, a pictorial representation of

What is the confusion all about? The lack of knowledge, that the service is currently available only at Ahmedabad, information about the site and its owners, and about the erratic behaviour of the site with regards to access and the basic lack of trust in citizens’ minds, might have led to this confusion. To add to this, Ruzan Khambatta — entrepreneur a well known Radio Jockey (RJ) aphow the service works was put up. parently announced that the site And it was clearly mentioned that, was fake, on his show. ways to access the site. What about the absence of an “About Us” tab? It’s my fault. Now, when I look at from the perspective of an individual who is from outside Gujarat and hasn’t heard of the policeheart initiative, I realise that anybody who doesn’t get proper information about the site on the site itself, would doubt its credentials. What about the lack of matter in all tabs except the login, registration and downloads tab? Again it is because of the internet connectivity blockages that the plug-ins had to be pulled out. That this is a genuine site and not fake. Any plans to launch a similar service in Mumbai? We would be glad to do so but we need to get the right contact person for this. Note: So there it is, the good news and the not-so-good! However, it is always better to check the authenticity of any site before giving out personal details as you can never know how it might be used or rather misused. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Talking about FB, what about the mention of an RJ calling your website “fake”? Yes I saw that. I guess he was in too much of a hurry to make a comment on air. Senior Police Inspector Naseer Pathan of the Oshiwara police station said, “We have arrested lawyer Sachin Mhatre for beating his wife up after he found her inside her boyfriend’s house near Megha Mall in Andheri (W). He was produced in court on Monday itself.” Sources from the Oshiwara police station revealed that

For the last one month he had been following her and finally on Monday, he waited near Megha Mall and started calling her on her mobile phone. When she did not picked up his call, Mhatre entered into the flat of his wife’s friend and witnessed her changing her clothes. On seeing this, he started beating his wife and abused the boy. Subsequently, he also took her to a nearby hospital for treatment, but after taking discharge from the hospital, his wife lodge an FIR against him, on the basis of which he was arrested. Continued from pg 1 « Minister’s functioning in next couple of weeks. As a result, the news doing the rounds in political circles is that R.R. Patil may not be retained as Home Minister for too long. The gang rape of a photojournalist set off a bout of political stone-throwing in the state, with the BJP, Shiv Sena and the MNS directly gunning for Patil’s head. Many Congress leaders are also upset with the recent incidents in the state, especially rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar’s murder and now, the gang rape of the photojournalist. Some NCP leaders are also of the opinion that Patil is losing his grip on this sensitive department, and though they are reluctant to comment openly, they have expressed their resentment at the party forum.

is leaving no stone unturned. In this regard, the crime branch, on Monday, sent the five gang-rape accused to the state run J J Hospital to conduct potency tests. “The defence lawyer might raise a point about the accused being impotent, which can affect the prosecution’s case to secure conviction. Considering this, and several such points, the investigators are collecting every possible evidence against the accused,” said JCP (Crime) Himanshu Roy. On Monday, city police chief Satya-

The police have cordoned off the place where the gangrape was committed.

IN OR OUT? According to sources, Patil told Pawar that he was willing to step down if that would help the party and the government. It seems that Pawar does not want to give an impression that he has succumbed to pressure from the BJP and MNS, which have demanded that Patil be sacked. The monsoon session of the Parliament is on, after which he is likely to take a call on the law and order situation in the state, sources have divulged. At the same time, one group in the NCP is strongly claiming that Pawar wants Patil to continue. Supriya Sule, NCP MP who had demanded capital punishment for all

those involved in the gang rape of the photojournalist, has said that this is not the time for blame games, and the issue must be collectively sorted out by all stake-holders. Significantly, all the opposition parties came down heavily on Patil after the gang rape. MNS chief Raj Thackeray was at his most vitriolic, appealing to people to send bangles to the home minister. Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray stated that the incident had brought shame to Mumbai and to humanity. State BJP president Devendra Phadanvis said, “If you can’t improve the law-and-order situation in Mumbai, you must resign. Mumbai is no longer the safe city it used to be.” Against this hostile backdrop, Patil might get some respite from his boss for a little while.

For this, the police have sought the help of three forensic expert teams.” A team of forensic experts from Mumbai is already working on the case and a team from Ahmedabad as well as Delhi, have been roped in to collect evidence. In fact, sources informed that the forensic expert teams from Delhi arrived in the city by 5 pm on Monday. According to a crime branch official, one of the five accused had clicked the photo of the victim on his mobile phone. Subsequently, the accused threatened the girl that if she complained, she would be murdered, as they had her photo with them, and therefore could trace her. Investigators have recovered the mobile photo which the accused had sold to a person in Null Bazar in South Mumbai, said police, who are trying to retrieve the photo with the help of experts. Interrogation of the accused revealed that they had targeted some girls in the past, of which one was a rag picker, while others were couples who had come inside the Shakti Mills compound for privacy. Meanwhile, the police have identified 272 places in the city, which have been lying secluded and deserted for the past several years. To prevent occurrence of such crimes, the owners of these places have been instructed to deploy proper security guards. Singh ensured that the chargesheet of the case would be filed as early as possible. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Food Security from December The Maharashtra Government in collaboration with the Food Corporation of India has begun to strengthen the food grain storage system, by constructing godowns at many locations, at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crore By A Staff Reporter

T

he Maharashtra Government has decided to implement the Food Security Bill from December 1 this year. The state will require 3.88 lakh tonnes of food grains per month from the Central quota to implement provision of subsidised food grains to its citizens. A good 75 per cent of the existing beneficiaries in rural areas and 54 per cent of them in urban areas would benefit from the scheme. A total of 7.17 crore people will be eligible for subsidised food grains in the state. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government in collaboration with the Food Corporation of India has begun to strengthen the food grain storage system, by constructing godowns at an estimated cost of Rs 2,000 crores. Incidentally, in the wake of the increased requirement of food grains to implement the

proposed Food Security Act, procurement operations will be expanded benefiting larger number of farmers. Food grain requirement for the implementation of the bill is estimated to be 614.3 lakh tonnes as against the existing requirement of 563.7 lakh tonnes for the Targeted Public Distribution System. Farmers will get more for their produce i.e. Rs.12.85 per kg for wheat and Rs.12.50 per kg for paddy as minimum support price (MSP). Two-thirds of the population will become legally entitled to receive highly subsidised food grains after the enactment of the Food Security Bill. Each entitled person will receive five 5 kg of food grains per month i.e. rice, wheat or coarse grains at Rs.3, Rs.2 and Re. 1 per kg respectively. The poorest of the poor will continue to get 35 kg food grains per household per month under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana.

The bill also has special focus on nutritional needs of women and children. The eldest woman of the household above 18 years is considered the head of the household for the purpose of issue of ration cards as per provisions of the Bill. Pregnant women and lactating mothers will get maternity benefit of Rs.6,000 besides nutritious food. Children below 14 years of age will get food with higher nutritional norms. Access to highly subsidised food grains to small farmers under proposed Food Security Act and assured MSP for their produce will ease the burden on their earnings and allow them the option to spend the money so saved on other necessities. Hence it is expected to help improve their quality of life. Therefore, contrary to dissuading farmers from producing more, the Act will in fact encourage them to produce more.

However, on a teacher being sent for mandatory training provided by the BMC or the state government, on occasion parents have themselves volunteered to mind a class. Nor have any contributions been levied compulsorily on the parents, the meeting discussed, for various school activities. In fact, such contributions have been voluntary and driven by the parents own desire to see them continue, since, for many of them, the range of activities provided are the reason for prizing the school above others in the first place!

07 CITY Nalasopara woman slashed at Goregaon station By Suresh Golani

I

n a chilling reminder of the murderous assault on an American national inside a local near Marine Lines last week, a 28-year-old woman was attacked with a blade by an unidentified man at Goregaon railway station at about 7:45 pm on Monday. The victim, who has been identified as Rupali Shinde (28), works at an industrial unit in Goregaon and was on her way back home in Nalasopara. She was waiting for a Virar-bound train when an unidentified man slashed at her head with a blade, seconds before the train pulled into the platform. Women travelling in the ladies compartment, who apparently knew Rupali as one of their co-commuters, pulled her inside, alighted at Nalasopara station and rushed her to the Alliance Hospital in a profusely bleeding state.

BIT by BIT, Mazagon chawl residents lose patience

his is the story of the struggle several hundred residents of the old Bombay Improvement Trust (BIT) colony in Mazagon to own their dream homes in the island city. It is a dream that literally millions of Mumbaikars surely share and for which they are all willing to fight. What makes this fight different from others is that the struggle is not just with their developer. It is also with a neighbour beside whom they have lived for decades and who has now turned a politician attached at various times to different parties. Late on Saturday night, a crucial meeting took place in the BIT chawls, in which 1300 residents and political party members participated, ostensibly for the redevelopment of the prime 28,000 sq meter plot in south Mumbai, where the market rate is Rs.20,000 per sq ft. of real estate. Nothing concrete came out of the hour-long meeting, except a date for the next meeting. Residents are afraid to trust anyone, including politicians or even representatives of the civic body which is the owner of the land. Eight years ago, one of the 16 buildings that makes up the BIT Chawls was ear-marked for redevelopment and its residents were sent to live in a hastily-constructed transit camp building set up between two chawls. Today, these residents are still living in the transit camp which is itself in as bad shape as the other buildings. (See pics) There is still no sign of redevelopment. The 16 buildings and three blocks of BIT Chawls in Mazagon were constructed during the British era, a few years after the First World War. Over almost a century, generation after generation of the same families have spent their lives in the chawl. Now the civic body, as owner of the buildings, has declared most of the buildings as ‘dilapidated’.

Public Notice

NOTICE is hereby given that the Original Share Certificate no. 31, Distinctive Nos from 151 to 155 of SHAKTI SADAN “C “ CO-OP HOUSING SOCIETY LTD standing in the name of MR. PRAVIN L SHAH has been reported lost or misplaced and that an application for issue of duplicate certificate has been made to societies office on the terrace of Shakti Sadan “C “ Co-op Housing Society, 163, Lamington Road, Mumbai – 400 007 to whom any objection, if any, against issuance of such Duplicate Share Certificate should be made within 15 days from the date of publication of this notice. If no claims/ objections are received within the period prescribed above, the society shall be free to issue duplicate Share Certificate in such a manner as is provided under the bye-laws of the Society.

A nightmare vista of BIT chawls in Mazagon, where it would seem that the conservancy department of BMC is completely absent.

This is a shot of the transit camp building to which families were relocated 8 years ago. It is now as dilapidated as the other buildings. At present, BIT Chawls and buildings houses an estimated 1300 families. Some of them are working in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city police and other sectors. They have been paying Rs.25 to Rs.40 per month as rent to the civic body. The residents said about the single structure selected for development, “The building plan remained on paper for years and no one turned up for construction. Families have been forced to stay in this now equally dilapidated place, risking their lives.” Meanwhile, some other builder was entrusted with redevelopment of a few other buildings. Residents com-

plained that due process of law was compromised during the tendering process and the issue had escalated to the Supreme Court. It is still in court at the present time. Last week, the civic body planned to vacate the ‘dilapidated’ buildings by cutting off the water and electricity supply. A ‘Chawl Bachchao’ group consisting mainly of senior citizens raised the issue and the civic body back tracked, fearing a riot-like situation.

and action against culprits who made mess of BIT Chawl. They want the BMC itself to develop the chawl or make due process to selected, sincere and capable builders who can develop the building in a particular timeframe. At the meeting on Saturday, minister for water resources (Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation) Shashikant Shinde, said he would call a meeting of civic officers and urban development officials for the development of BIT. He assured that the process would be “transparent and fast”. Meanwhile, the residents First demand is a CID inquiry into the way residents in the have adopted a wait and transit camp were dishoused watch attitude.

As per the fee structure of MU, colleges have to pay the varsity funds for cultural activities (Rs.6 per student), Disaster Relief (Rs.10 per student) and Sports and Cultural activities (Rs.24 per student), which totals Rs.40 per student. Ponder awhile... The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter. — Winston Churchill

A vote security bill T

HE long discussion on the Food Security Bill in parliament yesterday showed that all parties had no go but to support it. Opposition parties raised some objection and introduced amendments. This exercise was resorted to only to stop the ruling party from hogging the credit. The truth is that the UPA government introduced a bill which was conceived by Congress President Sonia Gandhi only to get attention from voters in rural and urban areas. It was clearly a pollmotivated move, a devise to attract voters in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress, which has been dented by dozens of scams, is making efforts to win over the aam admi. The Congress party has to first offer an explanation as to why there is so much poverty in the country. It was the total neglect of the poor that has led to hunger across the country. It is clear that the Congress is on a cover-up operation. The opposition parties – mainly the Bharatiya Janata Party – evidently fear that if they do not support the bill, the voters will conclude that while the Congress party is interested in helping the poor to survive, the BJP is not concerned at all in supporting a measure that will be hugely beneficial to them. It is clear as daylight that the Food Security Bill is really nothing but a vote security bill.

HE Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is at the apex to run the country’s administration. It replaced the Indian Civil Service (ICS) which was an instrument in the hands of the British to rule over India. After independence, there was serious thinking whether there should be an all-India service at all. The states wanted persons from their own area to administer. But, then Home Minister Sardar Patel was particular about an all-India service to articulate the feeling of unity and to maintain the diversities prevailing in the country. The service would also, Patel asserted, ensure that the Indian Constitution remained supreme in the medley of pulls by different states. Two all-India services, IAS and IP, were constituted. They came to occupy top positions in the states. This arrangement worked fairly well till the early seventies when the rot started due to the Centre’s maniacal effort to concentrate power and the states’ ambition to play politics through civil servants. This has practicably nullified good administration. The IAS has become a glorified state service.

number of public servants at various levels became the sole motivation for their official actions and behavior…” The service has not recovered from the carrots dangled before it during the emergency. In fact, it is going out of the way to placate the rulers. The latter, in turn, have rewarded those who did what the rulers wanted. The malaise is largely because of two reasons: one, the rulers do not respect the regulations and violate them to reap benefits for themselves and their parties; two, the IAS officers who are allotted to the states, have surrendered because of threat of transfer or posting to an unimportant position. Therefore, it is heartening to see IAS officers

a public interest litigation (PIL) petition challenging her suspension. The court is technically correct that it cannot interfere in matters between the government and the employees, but it should have realized the anger which swept through the country following action against the two officials. The support of IAS associations from some states and the trainees at Mussorie to Durga evokes hope that the service which has ingratiated itself with politicians may begin to assert itself as was the case before the emergency. The manner in which the threemember IAS officers’ committee endorsed the Haryana government casts shadow on the behavior of the service. The nation still hopes that the bureaucracy will make up for the deficiencies which the politicians, particularly belonging to the ruling party in a state or at the Centre, have created in the system.

BETWEEN THE LINES

What thoughts do you have? T

HE mental temperament of human beings, known as gunas in Sanskrit, are of three types. They are known as: Tamas Inactive; Rajas Active; Sattva Trans-active. Each has a distinct character of its own. Tamas is the state of thoughts in inertia. A mood of lethargy, indolence, indifference. Indisposed to activity. A condition of sloth and sleep. With no intellectual conviction to pursue. Nor emotional feeling to manifest. A person steeped in tamas lives a dull, inactive life. With hardly any response to the world. Rajas is the state of passionate, desirous and agitated thoughts. When a person bristles with frenzied actions. Leading to his involvement in the affairs of the world. Sattva is the state of thoughts in equanimity, serenity, objectivity. When a person is poised, mature, contemplative. Detached from worldly involvement and excitement. Hence termed trans-active. Sattva, rajas and tamas composed in different proportions accounts for the heterogeneous variety of human beings. Every individual possesses all three gunas. The proportion of these temperaments differs from person to person. Some have sattva predominating over rajas and tamas. They are referred to as sattvik persons. The predominance of rajas over the other two creates a rajasik person. And the predominance of tamas, a tamasik person. The law of nature is such that the sattva guna in an individual surfaces in the early hours of the morning. Between 4 am and 6 am.

sattvik time is over. Hence people are found bristling with activity during daytime. The rajasik person, with a large proportion of rajas, becomes frightfully active. Tamas emerges after 6 pm. Indulgence in intoxicants, sex, gambling etc is conspicuous during night-time. Most pronounced in tamasik persons. Less in rajasik and virtually absent in sattvik persons. Your mission in life should be to raise yourself from tamas to rajas to sattva. And your goal to reach trans-sattva. Transsattva is the state of Self-realisation, God-realisation. As you drop your tamas and rajas you attain more and more sattva. As you continue the spiritual pursuit your sattva gradually displaces all rajas and tamas. But sattva he wakes up late. Death for rapists is not the solution, prevention is! AS reported it is indeed very shocking and disturbing to know about the alarming rise in sex crimes particularly on children. People are angry and justified when they ask for death penalty on such depraved culprits. But death is not the solution. Even if the culprit is given death penalty the chapter is closed and gives relief and satisfaction to general public but it will not have any affect or deter would be culprits as the chapter is closed without any ado. It is well said: “prevention is better than cure”. Social media, movies, soap operas and electronic and print media can play major role in enlightening people that to have illegal or natural sex is a great crime and sin. Till today most of the movies or dramas and operas depict women as sex symbol or a toy. It is common scene in most of the movies that hero taunts or teases women by various lewd remarks. Mere death sentence will not help much but social awareness by social, print and electronic media can help a lot and women should not be depicted as a sex symbol or playful thing but should behave in a very respectable and dignified manner like in our old movies of Raj Kapoor, V. Shantaram and Bimal Roy which is a pleasure to watch even today with children and family without any shame. — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai

ONLY in Mumbai 91 rape cases and 66 cases of females’ kidnapping cases were committed just in the past three months. There is 15 per cent increase in the crimes against women in just one year. Such crimes occur because of no fear of police as well as law of the land. The anti-women crimes hardly reach the court of law, and when they do reach, the hearings and verdicts take many years coming. Only in Maharashtra 91 per cent of such cases are pending for hearings or verdicts since so long. In addition, very few criminals are ever punished, forget ‘severely.’ Nearly 1,000 teenagers and grown up females have committed suicide due to the mental disturbance even after molestation. In a majority of our police stations there is acute shortage of lady constables. If the Pakistan-backed terrorists don’t get executed for at least four years, like Ajmal Kasab, what of the rapists? Our laws are not only extremely loose, but also with number of loopholes for ‘jail and easy bail.’ — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

THE ghastly rape case in Mumbai came in handy for Raj Thackeray to gain brownie points by running down home minister R.R. Patil. While this may be expected of a politician—particularly when he is burning with election fever—his further exhortation to citizens to present the home minister with a garland of bangles exposes the unfortunate mindset of males in our society that culturally typecasts women as weak, incapable

and cowardly. It is then a small step to rationalise the macho adventurism of males as a matter of course. — Phiroze B. Javeri, Mumbai

APROPOS ‘Oppn demands RR’s resignation’ (ADC, Aug 24), this incident of monstrous rape once again reveals how much the safety of Indian women is at stake in our

tering the streets of Mumbai? Corruption has so much seeped in our society that the honest hardworking citizen of Mumbai is exposed to such elements as they have no one to look up to for their protection and safety and feel assured of returning home safely from work. Every civic conscious citizen should immediately report to the police and law enforcers about any drug peddlers, alcoholics,

tellectuals seem to have mastered an art of telling the word “shocked” when ever some ghastly event takes place. From Javed Akhtar to Shobhaa De might have uttered this term more than hundred times. The horrendous act of rape of photojournalist by five thugs have shaken the ‘conscience’ of Mumbaikars ‘once again’. There are many reasons for such dastardly acts. With the increase of population and free availability of pornographic materials, such incidents are likely to increase. Some may say that there is no increase in terms of percentage. There is no point in passing the laws when old laws are not implemented properly and judiciously. This photojournalist’s rape case also will go the Nirbhaya way. God save the country! — M.H. Nayak, Mumbai

APT SOLUTION: Mere death sentence will not help but the media in general can help a lot; women should not be depicted as sex symbols or toys. country. So far, Mumbai was enjoying a reasonably fair standard of safety for the weaker sex but this devastating gang rape, that too in broad daylight certainly raised the question of the standard of policing and the state of law and order in this financial capital of India. The Dy CM should certainly catch the bull by the horn and ensure that a fast track court is instituted to bring to justice these monstrous criminals at the earliest. He should rather focus on such issues wherein the basic safety of the citizens is a serious concern than those mundane issues like banning the dance bars, etc. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

IT is very tragic and disheartening to read that a young woman on her work duty with a male colleague was sexually assaulted in broad daylight. Mumbaiites are shocked and outraged that a gang rape has taken place LETTER OF on a helpless woman THE DAY who is believed to be recovering from the assault. The police have arrested all the five monsters involved in the ghastly deed. Should not the police commissioner and the home minister own responsibility for the failure of the police department to prevent such an incident and resign from their posts? Citizens of Mumbai expect accountability from those whose job is to protect the people from such ghastly crimes. Why cannot the police launch a drive to nab drug addicts and drunken elements found loi-

gamblers and anti-social elements in their area for the police to take remedial action. We should strengthen the hands of the law enforcement agencies to help them combat crimes for a safer Mumbai. — Apurva Parekh, Gamdevi

THIS refers to your edit-piece ‘Rape trial: Judiciary proceedings must be changed’ (ADC, Aug 26). One would readily endorse your views that the judiciary proceedings need to be changed drastically with a special court set up exclusively to try cases of rape. More importantly, considering the gravity of the crime, the testimony of the survivor and her identification of the culprits and those of her colleague besides the evidence from the boy of the locality who had helped nab the criminals should be sufficient to award the punishment. In fact, one would go to the extent of suggesting that in clear-cut cases like this, the defence lawyers themselves may not overdo their job and should facilitate the dispensation of justice to ‘Nirbhaya-2’. It is heartening to note that Ujjwal Nikam has been appointed as the Public Prosecutor for the case. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

APROPOS your article ‘Journalists demand home minister, police commissioner’s ouster’ (ADC, Aug 24). The protesting journalists have not exactly burnished their image by shouting slogans and aping our self-serving politicians. The demand for the resignation of the home minister and police commissioner is a meaningless gesture and will achieve nothing. Even if they succeed, especially in the case of the home minister, the odds are that he will replaced by someone equally or even more incompetent. It is no secret that our ministers are allocated portfolios not on the basis of their expertise or experience, but merely on political arithmetic and their clout within the party. And instead of replacing the police commissioner, the press should pressurise the government to drastically prune the unwarranted security given to politicians and bureaucrats. This is the real reason why our police force is perennially understaffed and constrained from performing their primary duty of protecting common citizens. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Coaba

ALL our leaders and so called in-

it is proved beyond doubt. All along we were pointing out Delhi as the rape city of India. But Mumbai is not lagging behind. From the menace of security guards to the cruel act by the boyfriend, molestation inside the local train and robbing and raping of foreign women, Mumbai stood first in recent times. If daytime life is so dangerous as in the case of Shakti Mill rape case, nothing is giving confidence to women to go out freely and work in Mumbai. Monstrous attack on a woman photographer opened up the Pandora’s Box that Mumbai carries equal risk like Delhi and other metro cities in India. At this rate our tourism will not flourish as such types of incidents paint a bad picture about India and her rapists. It is time to make sure women are safe in the commercial capital. People come to the city in the hope of making their livelihood but repent their action as the culprits roam in the guise of rapists. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

HAVING lived in Mumbai since my birth, I feel sorry for the women in this part of the country regularly being subjected to ill-treament of all sorts day and night. National outrage over the commercial capital shame brought a black mark on Mumbai. The shock over rape and the uproar, all did make an impact on state government in general and the police department in particular. All along all the rape victims suffered in silence but this time round she has come out in the open in a big way. Even after 65 years of Independence, the atrocities on women continue and we are simply eye-witness for what is happening to women. The State police force should have the guts and gumption to accord punishment without causing any delay. — Jayanthy Subramaniam, Sion

HATS off and a big salute to the Mumbai Police team for arresting all the five accused who were involved in the brutal gang rape of a photojournalist, in less than three days. I am sure Mumbai police would have laboured a lot and taken extreme pains and deployed all their sources and machinery and left no stone unturned in their efforts to nab them the rapists. I am really susprised at how the police could identify and catch them when they all had vanished after the gruesome crime and how were they able to nab them from among crores of people in this nation. The network was so strong and well connected to go after the criminals. In fact one of them was caught on the Delhi-Haryana bordfer, when he was about to go to Bangaldesh. Great job by the Mumbai Police who have proved to be second best--next only to the Scotland Yard of UK, in the world. — S. Krishna Kumar, Dombivli

ALL said and done; Mumbai city is not safe enough for women and

EVEN as my heart goes out to the pained photojournalist and her family, I believe the Mumbai cops have done a decent job in tracking down the culprits who committed the heinous crime. Everyone and his half brother are castigating the Mumbai Police force for crimes against women in the city, but let me tell you that the police is not “omnipotent” and cannot be at every place, at every time. The city is bursting at the seams with so many people, plus the floating population who enter and leave the city. The police force does not have the man force to handle people, festivals (we have too many of them) and not to forget the VVIP security. Police reforms are necessary, which includes freeing them from government diktats and pressures. Slums, which are vote banks of politicians also need some trimming, as a lot of anti-socials are holed up there. All is not over for the city yet, action oriented governance is the need of the hour. — Altaf H Ladiwala, Bandra

BJP corporator from the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) faces disqualification for providing a bogus caste certificate during the 2012 civic polls. The Divisional Caste Verification Department, Konkan Bhavan, has now issued an order to cancel the validity of her certificate. It should be noted that Saraswati Rajnikant Mayekar (BJP), had defeated her nearest NCP rival Narmada Vaity, by a slender margin of 80 votes to wrest away Ward No. 4 (A), which was reserved for women under the Other Backward Caste (OBC) category. Questioning Mayekar’s caste status, Vaity, filed a writ petition (No.9260/2012) in the Mumbai High Court, claiming that the Mayekar’s OBC certificate was procured by misrepresenting facts, as she, according to her claims, did not belong to the Macchimar (Daldi) community. In reply to the petition, a divisional bench comprising Justice Mrs. Mridula Bhatkar and Justice A.S. Oka, had remitted the matter for re-verification of the caste cer-

seven-year-old girl was raped in Ulwa village in Navi Mumbai. The girl was discovered profusely bleeding by her mother and a case was registered at the NRI police station. “The girl was playing with her friends outside her house, when the accused,

Vishwajeet, who had come to his relatives’ place three days ago from UP, was passing by. He told the children not to play and go away from there. He then called the victim and forcibly took her inside the house, locked the door and raped her,” police sources said. Later, the victim started screaming and somehow

managed to escape and was spotted by her mother, to whom she narrated the entire story. The mother immediately called the police, but by the time they could reach the place, villagers had started beating up the accused. The case has been registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.

n July 30, 2013, five armed dacoits had barged into Metal Consultant of India at Vashigaon area in the satellite city and had decamped with Rs.3,00,500. The incident took place in broad daylight at around 1:20 pm, when the employees were busy at work. They were taken aback when five men entered their office with guns, choppers and knives. “A complaint had been lodged with the Vashi Police station and investigations were started. Although it took time for us to find the dacoits, all five were arrested on August 24, thanks to the team effort of all the police officers. Choppers, knives and guns were recovered along with cash of Rs.11,000,” said Purshottam Karad DCP (Crime) Zone I, Vashi. The five dacoits, identified as Mohammad Raja Munsi Raja Sheikh aka Papa (37), Firoz Shirazzuddin Sheikh (57), Rafiq Rahemmuddin Sheikh (30), Navsad Allahuddin Sheikh (36) and Dhar-

Karad added, “The car which was used for the robbery was a ‘Maruti Ecco’ which was stolen from Nashik Road and a case was already registered for it at the Nashik Road police station.” Firoz Shrazzuddin Sheikh, the main accused, had earlier in the year 2004, robbed

Rs.40 lakh from the Vasai Cooperative Bank and was behind bars for seven years. After getting bail, he shifted to Ahmedabad where he committed a similar crime and was again jailed. This is his third offence in the history charge sheet. All the accused have been booked under the sections 272, 394 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and will be in police custody till September 3.

Your brain itself cannot sense pain, so a headache has nothing to do with your brain hurting. It is actually a pain somewhere around your brain, being picked up by nerve endings. Early research suggested that there were primarily three types of headaches — migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches. However, astoundingly, there are several types of headaches triggered because of various reasons. We tell you about them, their triggering factors and how you can ease them.

Rebound headaches Rebound headaches are chronic headaches that occur due to overuse of medicines. Dr. Rakesh Singh, a neurologist at S. L. Raheja Hospital tells us, “You take a medicine for your headache and after the effect wears off, the headache comes back.” But, what makes the headache chronic? Regularly taking any painkillers, such as aspirin, more than twice a week, or taking migraine drugs for more than 10 days a month, can put you at risk for rebound headaches in just a few months. Dr. Vyankatesh Joshi from SDF Holistic Healthcare & Research Centre tells us that they can be sudden and quite severe. He says, “Stop overtaking painkillers and consult your doctor at the earliest.”

TenSion headacheS This is the most common type of headache, which usually feels like a constant ache or pressure — rather than throbbing — on both sides of the head or at the back of the head and neck. Triggers include stress, anxiety, bad posture and clenching your jaw. These headaches can become chronic, although they usually aren’t severe. Dr. Rakesh says that it helps greatly if there’s a reduction in work load and stress levels. Over-thecounter pain relievers also help, but in severe cases, prescribed drugs may be needed.

early morning headacheS If you’re waking up in pain, there are several possible culprits. One could be that your medication may be waning while you sleep, resulting in a rebound headache. Sleep apnea sufferers may also be prone to headaches early in the day, as are those with dental headaches (see below). Dr. Rakesh adds that these headaches might need investigation to rule out brain pathology as

SinuS headacheS People with migraines often mistake them for sinus headaches. One study found that 88% of people with a history of sinus headaches probably had migraines instead. Symptoms like sinus pressure, nasal congestion and watery eyes can happen in both types. A true sinus headache is related to an infection and comes with nasal discharge that is green or tinged with red. Dr Rakesh tells us that viral and bacterial infections or certain allergens can cause sinus headaches. “They can be resolved by taking antibiotics. They can also subside by putting hot pads over the nasal sinus or gargling with lukewarm water,” adds Dr. Vyankatesh.

>> If you wake up every morning with a headache, you need to get yourself examined

there could be a structural lesion in brain. However, such cases are very rare.

cluSTer headacheS These one-sided headaches are short-lived (15 minutes to three hours), but are excruciating. These are so painful that they’re referred to as suicide headaches. The occurrence of these headaches is not consistent. They can recur regularly, sometimes multiple times a day, for a certain period of time and then stop for months or even years. According to Dr. Rakesh, triggering factors include alcohol, cigarettes, high altitudes and certain foods. He also says that at an acute stage, oxygen therapy might be required. Dr. Vyankatesh adds, “Normally medications are used but if that is not helpful, then the patient might have to undergo surgery.”

about the factors that can cause migraines, Dr. Shreepad says, “Allergies and allergic reactions, bright lights, loud noises, certain odours or perfumes, physical or emotional stress, changes in sleep pattern or irregular sleep, smoking or exposure to smoke, skipping meals or fasting — all of these factors can trigger a migraine.” Some lifestyle alterations that might help to reduce the frequency of migraines include sleeping enough, reducing stress, drinking plenty of water, avoiding certain foods and regular exercise. Also, your doctor might prescribe medicines to deal with the condition.

different in size or malformed can also lead to severe headaches. If your bite is unstable due to poorly aligned teeth or even a missing tooth, your muscles work harder to bring the teeth together causing pain in the head. Poor dental restorations, such as crowns and fillings, also can cause an uneven bite. It is experienced even more in those individuals who grind their teeth at night (Bruxism) and clench their jaws. Karishma says, “Dentists can make various types of appliances that fit over the teeth and allow the muscles to relax. Other treatments involve correcting your bite so that the muscles are not strained.”

If you experience headaches at least 15 days a month and it has been three months since you’ve been facing this problem, then you’d be better off by not ignoring the pain and blindly popping painkillers. These could be caused by overuse of pain medications, head injury or, in rare cases, meningitis or tumours. After series of tests and observations, and treating the root cause, this headache can be cured.

Dr. Karishma Jaradi, aesthetic dentist at Dentzz Dental Care tells us that headaches including facial pains can be linked to problems in the mouth. The root cause of these connects to a person’s dental problems. Wisdom teeth can cause a headache which affects the nerves and causes chronic headaches. Misaligned bite is among the main causes of these headaches, which cause tightness and pain in the temples, across the forehead or on the back of the head. The upper and lower jaw being

If you have a habit of having coffee at 8am and on a certain day you aren’t able to have it, rest assured that you’ll be greeted by a headache. It can be severe or mild and is known as a caffeine withdrawal headache. The chances of you experiencing the headache increase with the number of cups you have each day. There are two solutions: either give in to the cravings or quit altogether. While the headaches will be consistent for a couple of weeks after you go cold turkey, they will eventually disappear.

As if PMS and stomach cramps were not bad enough to deal with! These headaches are caused by estrogen levels suddenly dropping. They appear three days before your menstruation starts and two days post it has started. Dr. Vyankatesh says eating whole grains, leafy vegetables and taking magnesium supplements or over-thecounter headache remedies help.

orgaSm headacheS These headaches occur after having an orgasm. You usually experience it after coitus, but they can even arise during sex. The intensity is dull and can linger for a few hours after intercourse. Usually they go away on their own. Dr. Vyankatesh says that if you’re prone to this type of headache, taking a pain killer an hour before sex may help.

migraineS A migraine is a disorder characterised by repeated attacks of severe headache. It is a common form of headache that is believed to occur as a result of complex interactions between the nervous system and the vascular system, as well as alterations in brain chemicals. According to Dr. Shreepad Khedekar, clinical director of Imperial Clinics, they may occur as often as several times per week or as rarely as once or twice a year. Migraines are three times more common in women than men. Speaking

>> Dental problems are one of the reasons you could be suffering from a headache

Many people complain about an intense pain in the head when they are enjoying an icy cold treat. People who suffer from migraine problems are more susceptible to these headaches. Dr. Vyankatesh gives us the facts behind this headache — extreme cold sensation causes constriction of blood vessels at the roof of the mouth which increases the supply of blood to one of the brain’s arteries, leading to pain. What can you do about them? Sip on some warm water

and the headache will eventually ebb away.

Weekend headacheS Dr. Vyankatesh says that during the week, we lead a stressful life. And when the weekend arrives, there is a sudden change from stress to rest. That combined with oversleeping on weekends, going to bed later or caffeine withdrawal results in weekend headaches. Over-the-counter medication and sticking to your regular sleep-wake schedule can help to a great extent.

emergency headache According to Dr. Rakesh, this is the most severe headache. Many of Dr. Rakesh’s patients have described it as the worst headache of their lives. What makes these headaches fall into the immediate attention category? One is the sudden appearance of a sensation that makes you feel that your head is going to explode. Another is when a headache comes with a fever or extreme rise in blood pressure. Other symptoms include vision or speech change, neck stiffness and loss of sensation or muscle weakness. It’s triggered because of high blood pressure,

UNDERSTANDING

While the Ketogenic Diet was originally developed to treat patients with epilepsy, people are starting to get interested in its health benefits. Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you stay informed

THE KETOGENIC DIET B efore we tell you any more, be warned —– the ketogenic diet is not something you should try on your own. Don’t see it as a DIY diet that you can jump onto in your search for the perfect weight loss technique. Like any other diet, it has its pros and cons and has nutritionists and health experts conflicted about whether it’s good or not. Recently, people have been talking about how it can be good for your health when followed under the supervision of a doctor. It’s also been said to decrease stiffness, joint pain and even help with sleep apnea. American science writer and co-founder of the Nutrition Science Initiative spoke about the science of the diet in his book titled Good Calories, Bad Calories, as well as in Why We Get Fat. While you’ll have to contact your doctor to find out whether it would be a good option for you, here are a few things you should know about the ketogenic diet:

it works by restrictiNg carbohydrates Rakhee Todankar, senior nutritionist at Gold’s Gym India, tells us, “The ketogenic diet is a highfat, adequate protein, low-carbohydrate diet that mimics aspects of starvation by forcing the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.” Usually, carbohydrates in your food are converted into glucose that fuels brain function. The ketone that gets transported instead, replaces glucose as an energy source. NutritioNist speak “This is a specialised diet and should only be followed under the care, supervision and guidance of a dietician, as the balance of the diet needs to be carefully worked out. In specific medical cases this diet is highly recommended, but it should not be made into a practice by normal people to lose weight as it has side-effects.” — Rakhee Todankar, senior nutritionist at Gold’s Gym India

it puts your body iN a state of ketosis To understand the ketogenic diet, it’s important to understand what the state of ketosis is. Your body relies on glucose for fuel and carbohydrates are broken down to glucose and converted to energy. When this is restricted, your liver produces ketones, which make your body utilise fat. It’s a mode of metabolism that’s called ketosis. Some ketosis is bad and induced by starvation or diabetes. The acidic chemicals (ketones) can lead to problems if unchecked, but under the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist it can be used to treat health conditions and lose weight.

« KNOW MORE: WHY YOU SHOULD CUT DOWN ON SAUSAGES Sausages aren’t just unhealthy, but in fact, dangerous. Tejasvi Desai tells you why You’ve probably been told to stay clear of sausages if you are watching your diet charts closely. But, did you know that apart from all the fat this juicy piece of meat has to offer, it also has carcinogenic properties that actually makes it dangerous for your consumption? If you’ve ever tried piling your hot dog up with spring onions and chopped tomatoes in hopes of making it healthier, condiments won’t really stand a chance against cancer. The problem with sausages is that they aren’t only meat; it is a combination of ground meat mixed with fat, salt, a variety of seasonings, preservatives and sometimes other fillers. What makes the sausages really harmful are chemicals called nitrites and nitrates that are present in them, which once

ingested can be converted into cancer causing compounds. According to a spokesman for Cancer Research UK, these occur naturally in red meat but are often added during meatprocessing as a preservative. Red meat also contains a red pigment called haems, which is broken down in the gut to form compounds that are known to cause cancer. Haems may even irritate or damage the cells lining the bowel, leading to a greater risk of developing cancer. The combination of these two, as well as the sausages’ relatively high fat and salt content make them some of the most dangerous foods we consume. You might think buying better quality sausages with a high meat content could reduce the risk of cancer. But, sadly buying

expensive sausages isn’t going to help much because high meat content means there will be less of other ingredients that could possibly reduce fat content such as cereals or fruits and vegetables that are often added to modern sausages for flavour. Instead of frying, grilled sausages will make a considerable difference to your cardiovascular health, but it won’t really diminish its carcinogenic properties. Some people try poking holes in them to let the fat run out, but what’s a sausage without fat?! Cutting down on your consumption is the only healthy way out. If you still can’t control your cravings, then opt for a sausage with relatively low saturated fat and salt content. So, the next time you are about to pick up a hot dog, do think it over.

it started as part of a medical treatmeNt

Epilepsy is what gave rise to the diet as the ketones that are used as energy can actually reduce the number and severity of seizures. They can also have positive effects on your behaviour.

it does have aN ugly side Rakhee is quick to point out that with all the benefits, the ketogenic diet does have side-effects. If it’s followed without supervision, it can lead to dehydration, constipation, hypoglycemia and in rare cases, kidney stone or gall stone.

what you should avoid & what you should eat Ketogenic diets mean saying goodbye to refined carbohydrates (pasta, cereals) and refined sugars (including anything containing them such as a fruit juice) and including protein and healthy fats such as avocado and olive oil. This drops your pressure and cholesterol. Since the excess glucose is eliminated, it means that your cholesterol levels reduce. But, your HDL cholesterol (that is good for your heart) can increase. It also helps lower blood pressure, which can be good or bad depending on your pressure levels.

weight loss is possible The reason this diet is getting popular is because it’s being used to normalise weight. It’s common knowledge that if you decrease your carbohydrate intake, you have a better chance of losing weight. Depending on your insulin levels though, you may need to do some training and exercise along with it. So, it is by no means a shortcut to weight loss.

it helps digestioN If it’s followed with care, the ketone can reduce your appetite. So, people with food addiction will stop craving fats. It’s also been said to decrease stomach pain, bloating and gas because you’re cutting out grains and sugar.

>> The next time you order mouthwatering sausages, bear in mind the health concerns mentioned in our article

can you work out solo? Do you have the necessary motivation and knowledge to work out on your own? Take this quiz by Dev Goswami to find out

You planned to do four sets but feel tired at three. Do you skip the last set instead of pushing yourself? a. Yes. b. No. In the last few months, have you suffered from an exercise related injury while exercising on your own? a. Yes. b. No. Do you often skip going to the gym because you’re not

“in the mood”? a. Yes. b. No. Do you often give up in the middle of your workout because you are bored? a. Yes. b. No. Instead of planning your workout in advance, do you pick the exercises that you ‘feel’ like doing? a. Yes. b. No.

moStly as You cannot and definitely should not work out alone. Not only do you lack the necessary motivation, you’re also putting yourself in danger as you’re not knowledgeable enough about exercises and performing them safely. Having a workout buddy or a trainer to watch over you will give you better results. moStly bs If you haven’t already started working out on your own then know this — you can go ahead and do so. I

s your beauty cabinet overflowing with tubes, tubs and bottles? Get ready to clean it out, because you really don’t need most of them. Overusing beauty products and using too many of them is actually worse for your skin and hair than not using them at all. Take this quiz to find out how much you know about product usage.

1. How many skin creams do you think you need? a. Two. One for my body and one for my face. b. Three. One each for my body, face and hands. c. More than three. Different creams are needed for my face, hands, body, eye area and nails. 2. You need to use toner because… a. I have enlarged pores and oily skin. b. It’s the next step after moisturiser. c. I need it to tone my skin. 3. You use serum… a. Because I have very sensitive and reactive skin.

b. After an invasive procedure. c. On a daily basis. 4. To protect yourself from UV rays, you… a. Use sunscreen with SPF 30. b. Use sunscreen with SPF of over 40. c. Use makeup with SPF 30 and then a sunscreen with SPF of anything over 40. 5. You shampoo your hair… a. Twice or thrice a week. b. Every other day. c. Every day. 6. To treat dandruff you… a. Use a mild shampoo.

YOUR PRODUCT GUIDE A simple solution to eliminating futile products is to buy good quality ones. If you don’t skimp on your basic necessities such as moisturiser, shampoo, conditioner and sunscreen, there’s no need (unless you need it for a specific problem) to use a barrage of other products every day. See what you may be overusing or using unnecessarily: 1. Skin creams: We’ve told you before that just a coin sized amount is fine. But, if you’re getting swayed into purchasing separate products for your cuticles, hands, body and soles of your feet in addition to your face cream, you’re not really going to see much improvement. You can use one cream on your legs, arms, elbows and feet and just one more for your face and neck. 2. toner: This one is surprising, but you don’t need toner all the time. It’s not going to harm you if you do use it, but unless you have very oily, acne prone skin, you’re spending needless money on it.

b. Use a shampoo and conditioner. c. Use an oil, shampoo, conditioner and serum.

3. Hydrating serum: On a day-to-day basis, feel

free to skip this product. There’s no need to use it unless you have very sensitive skin, because it essentially just soothes it. It’s also a great product to use after an invasive procedure. 4. Sunscreen: Yes, sunscreen is essential and if your makeup has anything under SPF 30, you should double up with a sunscreen. But, if you’re already using SPF 30, anything above is actually unnecessary because it doesn’t block too many additional rays. In fact, you’re just clogging your skin with the extra cream. 5. Shampoo: Your hair does not need to be shampooed daily. Two to three times a week is ideal. The more often you shampoo your hair, the more natural oils you are robbing from your locks, which causes dry and weak hair. Refrain from using shampoo daily and if your scalp and hair feel dirty, rinse it with cool water.

7. You get rid of split ends by… a. Cutting my hair short and refraining from tying it tight. b. Cutting my hair and using a serum. c. Using split hair corrective products such as masks and serums. 8. You have over eight beauty products for your daily skin care routine. You… a. Use them to treat different problems, at different times. b. Use up to five of them every day, but some are for specific problems. c. Use them all together.

6. dandruff products: You don’t need four

different products to treat your dandruff. While you may think that using oil, shampoo and conditioner and topping off with a serum (all anti-dandruff) will eliminate the problem completely, you’ll actually get the same results with a mild anti-dandruff shampoo. Too many hair products can dry out your scalp and actually increase your dandruff problem. 7. Split ends: You don’t need any products to get rid of split ends, because while serums can cut frizz, they will not eliminate split ends. Your only solution is to cut them and start over. 8. too many: Cleanser, moisturiser, toner, skin cream, face cream, cuticle oil, serum, anti-ageing cream, vitamin C cream, eye creams, SPF lotions, exfoliating products… can you say that without taking a breath? There’s your problem in a nutshell. Stop using so many products. If you take good care of your skin, you won’t need them to begin with.

GIFT OF

« KNOW MORE: HOW TO SPOT A GOOD TRAINER A fitness trainer’s advice is often taken as the gospel truth. And it should be, but only if the trainer is good. Dev Goswami tells you how to pick a fitness trainer

Shutterstock

Everyone knows that a good trainer is an invaluable addition to your exercise regime. Not only do they guide you, they also ensure that you aren’t inadvertently putting yourself at risk of an injury. However, it is possible that you will come across trainers who’ll push you more than necessary or those who won’t take much interest in you. To avoid having to work out under such trainers, follow the tips listed below to help you pick the right trainer. Constant feedback: Before you decide to join a gym or work with a particular trainer, set a day aside to watch how he/she handles their clients. A sign of a good trainer is one who gives constant feedback and physically corrects your body posture as and when necessary.

Personal attention: Unless you can afford a personal trainer, you have to deal with the fact that your trainer will have other clients to attend to while you’re working out. However, you still need to ensure that he gives all his clients enough time and attends to all their queries. Yelling doesn’t mean anything: Most of us have a misconception that a trainer who constantly yells is motivating us to push our limits. However, that is not true. If you’re yelled at while working out, you might get scared or irritated and end up injuring yourself. Motivating personality: So, how do you gauge whether a trainer can motivate you or not? It will actually depend on your personality — based on that the trainer may adopt a certain approach that he feels will motivate you (strict or lenient). So, the best way to test this is to talk to his current clients. Ask them what they think about him and whether he is good at motivating someone to work out. Sound knowledge: A trainer should not only be fit but also possess a knowledgeable mind. The easiest way to ascertain that is to ask him a lot of questions. It will tell you whether he actually knows the science of fitness or if he’s just blindly following the textbook.

Instead of giving someone a basket full of calorific treats, show them your love by gifting them a present that will add to their lifestyle. Tejasvi Desai lists a few gifting options

HEALTH 3. Gym shoes

Nobody can ever have enough shoes and that’s even the case with sports shoes. The variety and the price ranges are mindboggling but shoes are one of the most important factors when it comes to working out. Finding the right pair is a task and if you do it for them they will never be able to thank you enough. However, make sure you get the size and type right and always keep the receipt handy in case they need to be exchanged.

G

ifting is always tricky. And gifting someone fitness gear even more so. Although your intentions might be good, the gift could be interpreted in the wrong way. For instance, if you gift your wife a workout outfit, she is sure to assume that you think she is fat. So, tread carefully when you pick out a fitness gift to ensure you don’t come across as rude. Here’s a list of a few safe options that you could choose from:

4. Gym membership This is a tricky one, but feel free to gift it if the recipient has been on the lookout for a good gym or is hesitating to take the final step of enrolling themselves. Sometimes it takes an extra nudge to finally drag your butt to the gym and it happens only once you have enrolled. Any gym membership should come with (at least) access to the cardio and weight training sections. Gyms have all sorts of addons like nutritionist appointments and personal trainers. Make sure you check out all the different options properly and select the one that your friend would be most likely to use.

5. ipoD shuFFle

>> Gift someone a pair of dumbells or a cool iPod Shuffle and watch them dance their way to fitness

1. Dumbbells or Kettlebells Many of us prefer good home workouts rather than heading to a gym. But, good equipment is the key to getting a home workout right. A pair of sturdy dumbbells or Kettlebells is often all you need for a full-body, intense workout. Make sure you know the correct weight to pick or your well-meaning gift won’t be worth more than a paper-weight. When buying dumbbells, in addition to the weight, look for a comfortable grip and cushioning because nobody likes cracked tiles at home.

2. WiiFit If you’ve played tennis or baseball on the Ninetendo Wii, you will know that it is very addictive and the muscle aches you experience the next day are very real too. If the person who you are looking to gift is a gamer and gadget freak, nothing combines fitness and fun better than the WiiFit. The WiiFit has been adopted by health clubs and physiotherapists and has been shown to improve your posture making it the ideal choice for low-intensity, home-workoutloving friends.

iPod Shuffles are cute, colourful and can be your perfect workout companion. This tiny little musthave doesn’t come with all the fancy features of a regular iPod, but it does what it sets out to do. It gives you enough, continuous music to drown out the unpleasant mix that’s being played at the gym. It makes for an easy clip-on to the sleeve and doesn’t feel bulky either. To add a personal touch to this gizmo, load it with a customised playlist with your friend’s favourite tracks.

6. yoGa mats If your friend is not a fan of the treadmill or outdoor running don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. You will be surprised to know how particular people get about their yoga mats. If you had to stare, sit and workout on it for at least an hour, even you would. So, gift a yoga fanatic a new yoga mat and they will be the happiest. Even if they have one, they’ll be more than happy to switch it up occasionally with a new one. You can choose from a variety of colour and material options now easily available. Having them customised with quirky motivational quotes is sure to put a smile on your friend’s face.

Older but nOt wiser A recent study done in the UK has revealed that the recommended level of safe drinking for older people needs to lowered. Dev Goswami finds out more >> After a point, age plays a crucial role in determining how much alcohol you should be consuming

P

eople over the age of 65 years need better alcohol advice according to a recent paper published by the universities of Newcastle and Sunderland. The paper addresses the reasons why older people consume harmful levels of alcohol. The conclusions and facts are drawn from a recent study that was conducted by Fuse, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health.

The sTudy The study was conducted on a focus group comprising of 53 men and women, aged between 65 and 90. The aim of this study was to understand the reasons why people in that age group drink alcohol. The study

that was done through interviews also attempted to gauge older citizens’ attitudes towards alcohol.

surprising resulTs The most surprising aspect of the study was not the fact that older people drank much more than the recommended limit (which is 14 units a week for women and 21 for men) — that has already been showed by previous studies. What was surprising was their attitude towards drinking. For instance, a woman who was part of the study, said: “If somebody found me drunk in a corner, that would probably shock me into stopping but that has never happened…” And it’s not a lone case. The paper talks

about how several other people provided reasons that effectively meant that they don’t see a problem with drinking because they did not suffer from any immediate adverse effects that could be linked to drinking. This is a worrying sign and is best explained by Dr. Graeme Wilson from the Institute of Health and Society, Newcastle University, who led the study. He was quoted saying, “Many older people are drinking to a level that has a long-term impact on their health, even if the damage isn’t always immediately apparent.”

BeTTer advice & lower limiTs The study concludes by saying that not only

does the recommended limit for safe drinking need to be brought down for people over 65 years of age, but better advice needs to be given as far as the consumption of alcohol is concerned. The dangers and risks of excessive consumption of alcohol are hardly something we need to tell you about. It is important to know that as you age, your body starts reacting differently to what you eat and drink. Also, the medication that you might be taking might not react well with alcohol. Thus, making an informed and knowledgeable choice after consulting your physician as far as alcohol is concerned is of paramount importance if you’re over 65 years of age.

Often, pregnant women are told that they have to eat for two and that extra calories are required during these months. And very often, expectant mothers take this statement quite seriously and go overboard. Dr. Amrapali Patil, weight management expert at Trim N Tone, says, “While some leave it to time itself, other women take this period as a time to ‘officially’ eat to their heart’s content. And then, there are those who worry about all that weight that they would be putting on while pregnant, which

causes them to think as to what would they do to get rid of all that excess weight.” The average pregnant woman needs only about 300 extra, healthy calories a day than she did before she got pregnant. Amrapali adds, “How much weight you should gain depends on your body mass index (BMI) before pregnancy and how many children you’re carrying (in case of multiple babies). BMI estimates body fat based on height and weight.” The global guidelines recommend the following figures: l If your pre-pregnancy weight was in the healthy range for your height (a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9), you should gain anything between 11 to 15kg,

gaining about two kilos in the first trimester and about 0.45kg per week for the rest of your pregnancy for the optimal growth and development of your baby. l If you were underweight for your height at conception (a BMI below 18.5), you should ideally gain 12 to 18kg. l If you were overweight for your height (a BMI of 25 to 29.9), you should gain 6 to 11kg. If you were obese (a BMI of 30 or higher), you should gain between 4 to 9kg. l If you’re having twins, you should gain at least 16 and up to 24kg if you started at a healthy weight, at least 14 and up to 22kg if you were overweight and at least 11 and up to 19kg if you were obese.

>> The amount of weight a woman needs to gain during her pregnancy depends on her body mass index (BMI)

dear Barbara, I bruise like a peach and while there isn’t much I can do about it, I’m going to be the bridesmaid at a wedding in a week and my legs are covered in bruises that I know won’t subside by then! How do I conceal the black and blue marks so that I look alright? — Monisha Fernandes, Mulund dear Monisha, The best thing would be to give your bruises time to heal, but since you say that isn’t an option, the next best thing you can do is to cover them up with makeup. Use a concealer if the bruises are few and far between. Dab the concealer with translucent powder to keep it from disappearing too quickly. You can also try using an air brush spray that is specifically meant for legs. The leg makeup tool conceals bruises, veins and skin spots so you’ll look like you have flawless skin, if only for a few hours. Also try applying ice to the bruise as that will prevent it from spreading. dear Barbara, Every time I get my upper lip tweezed, waxed or plucked, I get a slight swelling and a lot of redness. Earlier, the swelling would go down in an hour or two, but now it’s started to last much longer, which means that for at least half a day I have a red, swollen and very embarrassing looking upper lip. Sometimes, it even forms a blister! I apply powder and a cream after, but it doesn’t help. What can I do? — Shruti Shah, Goregaon dear Shruti,

>> Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling on your upper lip Don’t worry as this happens to several people because the skin of your upper lip is a lot more sensitive than the rest of your body. Your pores are open and probably swelling, which can sometimes cause blisters or even pimples if dirt gets in. After you get your upper lip done, immediately put a cold compress on the area for a few minutes. This should reduce the size of your pores and minimise redness. Apply cream and leave your face makeup free (this includes foundation) for a few hours. If the inflammation is still present, try using an antiinflammatory cream.

hot stone massage is a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones (volcanic rocks), either as an extension of their own hands, or by placing them on your body while they massage you. The idea behind hot stone massage therapy is that the heat from the stones relaxes your muscles, allowing the therapist to access the deeper muscle layers of your body. Using hot stones with a full body massage provides a very healing and relaxing experience. The hot stones also expand blood vessels, which encourages blood flow throughout your body. They also have a sedative effect that can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote relaxation. Here are some spas and salons in the city that offer this exotic form of massage, which you must try out at least once:

ew Delhi: VHP’s controversial Ayodhya yatra rocked Parliament on Monday with both Houses being disrupted repeatedly due to clashes between Samajwadi Party and BJP as demands were made for dismissal of the Uttar Pradesh government. Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh launched a scathing attack on BJP, saying it was resorting to hooliganism by disregarding the Constitution and court orders. Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed three adjournments each on the issue in the pre-lunch session. Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav alleged that BJP

SC dismisses contempt plea on IAS officer Nagpal’s suspension N

ew Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea for initiating contempt proceedings against the UP government and its Chief Minister for suspending IAS officer Durga Sakthi Nagpal, who had cracked down on the sand mafia in Gautam Budh Nagar. The petition filed by an advocate had contended that the officer had only complied with the orders of this court in demolishing the illegal structure and the decision of state government to suspend her amounts to contempt. However, a bench comprising justices H L Dattu and S J Mukhopadhaya said nothing is there to show that there is wilful and deliberate contempt by any of the alleged contemnors (state authorities). “How does the action of

Durga Shakti Nagpal state government amounts to contempt,” the bench asked and noted that the authorities by themselves have not taken any decision relating to the apex court’s orders on preventing unauthorised construction of religious buildings on public land. The bench also said that the contempt petition has been filed too early when the state gov-

ernment has not taken final decision on the charge sheet issued to her. The bench said the stage of contempt would only arise after the officer files response to the charge sheet and the state government takes a final decision. The petition, filed by advocate M.L. Sharma, had also named Chief Secretary Javed Usmani, working Chief Secretary Aalok Ranjan and the Centre as respondents. The petition had contended that action against 28-year-old Nagpal was in contempt of the apex court order on preventing unauthorised construction of religious structures on public land. “Following the Supreme Court direction is not an offence that has been performed by the officer concerned,” he had said.

Asaram, who was booked for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in a Jodhpur ashram, arrived in Indore on Saturday for spending time in ‘solitude’. His spokesman has denied the charges. There is no vote bank left with them so they want riots. They should stop vote bank politics. People are not supporting them. Saints have also condemned them,” he said. This was strongly countered by BJP’s Yogi Adityanath who insisted that the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has declared the disputed place as the birthplace of Lord Ram and the saints have been demanding a law for the purpose. Adityanath accused the SP gov-

He said the UP government was allotting land in the name of cemeteries. Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha today witnessed outrage over the gangrape of a young photo-journalist in Mumbai with many members demanding death for the culprits, as Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde assured them of expeditious action against the accused. His assurance came after Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj asked whether any time-frame has been set for prosecuting those found guilty of the crime, while pointing out that those accused in the December 16 gangrape in Delhi had not yet been sentenced.

Target Rs. 60

Key Highlights of Q1FY14 results: Revenues grew by ~39% YoY to Rs.27.7 bn majorly on back of robust volume growth which grew by ~28% YoY to ~8.4 bn units. Volumes grew across segments with long-term, short-term & cross-border witnessing a growth of 27%, 24% & 51% respectively. Management expects volumes to grow at a CAGR of ~15% over the next 2 years. Increasing volumes offset by lower tolling margins due to changes in tolling arrangements has led to lower operating profit growth of ~7% YoY to Rs.340mn while margins declined by 40 bps to 1.2%. Trading margins remained under pressure wherein the average margin in Q1FY14 stood at Rs.0.038unit(FY13–Rs.0.039/unit). Outlook & Valuation: PTC India has reported decent set of numbers for the quarter ended June’13 with Revenue & PAT growth of 39 percent & 17 percent respectively. Better volume growth coupled with strong pipeline of longterm PPA’s provides volume growth visibility going ahead. Increasing government initiatives to revive power segment coupled with gradual repayment of dues from TNEB & UPPCL has further mitigated the concerns over recovery of outstanding dues. However, management’s decision of revising tolling arrangement in our view is very positive for Company in long run while it would provide short-term pain by way of decline in profitability on back of relatively lower margins. Hence, considering the sound business model & long-term growth prospects, we maintain our positive view on the stock & recommend ‘BUY’ with a revised price target of Rs 60 based on the SOTP methodology

Espirito Santo calls a ‘Buy’ on Sesa Sterlite CMP: Rs. 167

Target Rs. 180

The uncertainty over GOI’s much delayed minority stake sale in HZL is finally nearing a conclusion. As per media reports, the Attorney General (AG) has opined the stake sale process can go ahead. Our interactions with Ministry officials indicate a final approval from the cabinet committee would pave the way for the transaction to go through. We upgrade Sesa Sterlite to BUY (from Neutral) with a new FV of Rs180, factoring in a successful HZL and Balco stake buyout. Whilst details of the stake sale process/pricing aren’t available as of yet, we think Vedanta’s last offered price offers comfort and upside even from current levels. Upgrade to BUY with FV of Rs180: We upgrade Sesa Sterlite to BUY with a FV of Rs180 to reflect the rollover to FY15 and expected HZL/Balco stake buyout by then. We think further PILs can’t be ruled out on amendment of the Metals Corporation Act, we think rolling over FV to FY15 leaves enough room in the interim to do away with legal hurdles. In the event that the stake sale did not go through, our FV for Sesa Sterlite could fall back to Rs159/share.

Although, overall imports have shown some decline during Q1 FY’14 as compared to Q1 FY’13, imports of power transformers, insulators (mainly through power project imports route) and AC motors and generators have continued to increase and are capturing a larger and larger share of the domestic market for these products even as domestic demand remains depressed. BUSINESS BRIEFS Credit Quality Of Indian Oil Companies Could Weaken

The credit quality of state-owned oil marketing and upstream oil companies in India will likely weaken for the rest of fiscal year 2014 if the government continues to ask them to take on a higher burden of the country’s fuel subsidies. Nonetheless, we continue to expect that the government will fully reimburse marketing companies by the end of fiscal 2014 and reduce the burden on upstream companies, says Moody’s Research in its latest credit outlook report.

Indian stock exchange system compared to others There are various parameters on which exchange system are measured. Retail investors want safety of trading, clearing and settlement systems along with safety of advice and strength of corporate governance. Internationally, people measure exchanges on many such parameters. However, in India the tradition is to look at volumes, which may have some relevance for traders but not retail investors. In the last 18 years, our exchanges have achieved total automation and now offer a reasonably good response times, one of the best in the world. Clearing corporations have been set up to act as settlement guarantors (so that in case a brokers defaults others don't suffer). There is real-time risk management system. These make India's markets strong in terms of processing regulations as well as the IPO framework. For instance, it used to take 30-50 days to list companies. Now, it takes 7-8 days. India's stock markets are also a lot safer than earlier. www.bseindia.com

ivek Sonar, who runs a bansuri gurukul in Thane, originally belongs to Chalisgaon in north Maharashtra. A highly talented flautist, he first took his lessons from a local teacher Purushottam Antapurkar who taught him the basics. Vivek later graduated from the bansuri wizard Hariprasad Chaurasia who has showered love and affection on him. Sonar now accompanies Chaurasia in his concerts. He even tours foreign countries with his mentor and lends him a steady and reliable support on the bansuri. Vivek Sonar has scores of disciples. In the month of January every year, he gathers all such students and makes them play in unison. It is called 'flute symphony'. Over 100 flautists play at one time and the spectacle is as breathtaking as the audio is enjoyable. Last Sunday, his pupils had assembled at the Sahayog Mandir Hall in Thane for Guru Poornima celebration. They hail from remote places in Maharashtra. They played raga-based numbers as well as compositions in ragas ranging from the pre dawn ‘Lalit’ to the midnight melody ‘Chandrakauns’. It was a

s a mark of tribute to the celebrated master choreographer, late Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the Kaishiki Dance Academy presented a unique Odissi programme, featuring the talented danseuse Prateesha Mohaptra and the dance drama ‘Saggy Baggy Elephant’ at the Manik Sabhagriha in Bandra. Besides the elegant performance by Prateesha, the children were delighted to watch the dance drama in the Odissi style. Teenager Prateesha Mohapatra is the daughter and disciple of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, son of Kelubabu, and hence it was befitting tribute to the great maestro who placed Odissi on the international map. After the invocation, Prateesha performed the Hamshadhwani Pallavi that exposed the typical and characteristic movements of the Odissi styles, while maintaining the torso deflections and projecting the ‘tribhangis’ in the number that formed a fine synthesis of both music and melody, composed by the veteran Pandit Bubaneshwar Mishra. Prateesha

irector Satish Rajwade is known for his urban love stories like Mumbai Pune Mumbai and Premachi Gosht, but now he attempts a rural comedy with a message about AIDS in Popat. Set in a small village, Ragunath Hivle (Amey Wagh) is ambitious to try his luck as a film hero while he is still shooting as a junior artist. His friends are very supportive of him especially Bala Chinchuke (Siddharth Menon) and the only educated

wonderful experience. Vivek Sonar himself played the raga ‘Shudh Sarang’ which uses both shades of the note ‘Madhyam’. Sonar displayed his mastery of the instrument in a quiet and unobtrusive manner. Kalinath Mishra on the tabla was his usual excellent self. Swaramayee Gurukool, founded by the Prabha Atre Foundation, had organised a lecture demonstration on the Gwalior tradition and gayaki last weekend. The Gwalior gharana owes its origin to the dhrupad dhamar gayaki which rose to a peak of popularity during Raj Mansingh Tomar's time. The musical style has incorporated the solidity of dhru-

pad alaaps and raga structures into its khyal gayaki. Sadarang and Adarang had been players in the court of the Mughal Emperor Mohammedshah Rangile and developed this unique khyal form. As the Delhi Darbar lost its prominence in the 19th century, the musicians shifted to Lucknow and Gwalior. The Gwalior khyal blended the raga, the theka of the tabla and lyrics of the composition in a seamless whole. It was perfected by Hassu Khan, Haddu Khan and Nathu Khan. The demonstrator also sang soul stirring compositions in ‘Poorvi’ and ‘Yaman’ to prove his point.

A ‘natural’ dance tribute performed ‘Jai Mahesh’ that depicted the grandeur and the glory of Lord Nataraja, also known as Maheshwara. The teenager danced with poise and elegance, revealing fine command over the technique of Odissi style, and can really scale great heights as a Odissi dancer. Disciples of Guru Daksha Mashruwala performed the dancedrama ‘Saggy Baggy Elephant’ which was noteworthy for its portrayal of nature, birds and animals like the elephant and the deer. Choreographed by Ratikant, it was in-

teresting to watch as to how the dancers enacted the varied animals in the typical ‘angika abhinaya’ pertaining to the gait and the nature of every animal. This production portrays the story of the elephant who feels clumsy, isolated and lonely but one fine day realises his attributes when he meets other elephants. The choreography was quite simple but attracted the attention of the audience, particularly children, especially the typical characteristics of the animals for which the credit goes to all the dancers and the wonderful choreography by Ratikant Mohapatra. While most animals were portrayed, one was wondering as to why the most naughty animal - monkey was avoided. Nature and environment plays an integral part of classical dance but rarely does one witness a programme wherein nature is explored and depicted in a dance format. It was a unique and interesting programme that took classical dance closer to the audience, a fine tribute indeed.

Popat: a must watch! Mukund Borade (Ketan Pawar). But with no help, they begin preparing their own film on AIDS as a message after watching a street play on the scary disease which they feel that everyone should be educated about. But when they hire Janabhau (Atul Kulkarni) as the hero and another cameraman, he shoots marriage videos making things go haywire funnily and the actors from the village add to the film-makers’ woes. But they somehow near the film’s completion when Janabhau falls sick and doubts it as having acquired the HIV disease, since he has had a sexual experience with an AIDS victim, a dancer (Megha Ghadge) from the city. He is all set to commit suicide but his three friends rally around him and take him to a doctor conducts various checks and declares him completely

fit. The idea of a film within a film is innovative and Rajwade does a good job of directing his own story developed by Chinmay Kelkar. The performances are quite noteworthy with Atul Kulkarni leading the way along with Amey Wagh, Siddharth Menon (a special mention for him) and Ketan Pawar. Anita Date puts in a peppy performance. The music by Avinash-Vishwajeet is good especially the opening parody song (Urmila Kanetkar Kothare in a special appearance) and the lavni choreographed well by Phulva Khamkar. The cinematography by Bhaskar Samla is top class capturing the village locales with bright colour filters. The editing by Rajesh Rao is swishy sharp. The film is a definite mustwatch for all audiences as Satish Rajwade scores yet again.

The final Test match of the series ended in a dramatic draw on late Sunday after umpires took the players off for bad light, with England needing 21 to win in four overs. There was controversy surrounding the ending and the umpires, Aleem Dar and Kumar Dharmasena, and Australian skipper Michael Clarke were booed by the home crowd. However, the result did not seem to dampen English euphoria as the players celebrated in the most unusual manner. Hat-trick of failures as Gambhir’s lean patch continues

MANCHESTER: India discard Gautam Gambhir's woeful form in the county circuit continued as he failed to make a significant contribution for the third time in a row during a one day game for the Yorkshire Bank Pro 40 Championship. Gambhir made only 2 after Essex captain James Foster elected to bat at the Old Trafford ground. The left-hander, who is fighting to make a comeback into the Indian team had scored 31 in a first-class game against Northamptonshire and 21 in a Pro-40 game against Derbyshire. Today Gambhir was the first batsmen to get out after facing nine deliveries as he poked at an away-going delivery of seamer Kabir Ali which was snapped up by veteran South African Ashwell Prince in the slip cordon.

NEW DELHI: Parliament today congratulated Indian women's team for winning gold medal at the Archery World Cup and India Under-23 Cricket team for winning Asian Cricket Council Emerging Teams Cup in Singapore. "On behalf of the House and on my own behalf, I congratulate the Indian Women's recurve team for winning the gold medal at the World Cup Archery (State IV) held in Poland and the Indian Under-23 Cricket team for winning the Asian Cricket Council Emerging Cup in Singapore on August 25," Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari said. ONDON: In a distasteful postscript to their Ashes triumph, some of the England players celebrated by urinating on the pitch at the Oval here. After the dressing room party, including uncorking the bubbly, the players moved to the centre of the ground and urinated on the pitch, which is considered to be sacrosanct for cricketers. Stuart Broad, Kevin Pietersen and James Ander-

son were the players involved in the shameful act. According to media reports, about five hours after the last Test was stopped due to bad light with England close to victory, the players gathered near the pitch and took turns to relieve themselves on the 22-yard-strip. While the centre of the ground was quite dark, lights were on in the grandstands with people still cleaning up after a late finish,

Kumar Dharmasena and Aleem Dar try to appease an agitated Michael Clarke during the final Test match.

YDNEY: Skipper Michael Clarke told umpire Aleem Dar not to touch him as the fifth and final Ashes Test ended in an acrimonious draw, Australian media revealed. Clarke's exchange with the umpires hit the headlines after bad light ended England's dramatic late bid to run down the target set by the tourists' bold second innings declaration which injected life into the encounter at The Oval in London. England, set 227 to win in 44 overs, needed just 21 off 24 balls with five wickets left when the umpires decided the light, even with the floodlights on, was too dark and ended the match with England taking the series 3-0. "Michael Clarke asked umpire Aleem Dar to take his hands off him as the final Test ended amid controversy and confusion after one of the most extraordinary days in the history of Ashes cricket," The Australian's Wayne Smith said. The daily quoted Clarke as saying: "I can't remember what I said. I remember Aleem touching me and I asked him politely to not touch me because if I touched him I'd be suspended for three

matches." Dar had reached out with his left hand to push the Australian captain away. Clarke later revealed at the post-match presentations that the lux (light) reading was 5.7, "no comparison", as he put it, to the brighter 8.1 level that had prompted the umpires to call play off in Manchester when Australia had been in control of the Third Test. "Once they took the reading, I knew it was going to be darker than what it was in Manchester. I was batting at the time in Manchester and I knew it was going to be darker," Clarke said. The Australian newspaper said the way the English crowd jeered Clarke was "nothing short of disgraceful" given that their own side had played "nothing but negative cricket at every stage of the match". The Daily Telegraph's Malcolm Conn said that umpires had to take a "more pragmatic view" of bad light rulings in future. "The light that the last hour of the game was played in highlights how farcical it was to come off for bad light earlier in the tour, showing that the umpires must take a more pragmatic view," Conn said.

Mahindra miss double top ten spot

MUMBAI: Mahindra missed another double top ten in the MGP3O’s debut season by less than half a second in today’s Czech Republic Grand Prix, fighting hard in a big pursuit pack of Moto3™ machines that stayed close throughout an exciting 19-lap race of the fast and spectacular Brno circuit. Efrén Vázquez had qualified ninth and teammate Miguel Oliveira tenth for the race, at a long circuit where the still young Mahindra machine held its own on the sweeping corners and long climbs. It was Portuguese teenager Oliveira leading the pair, and most of the time at the front of the pack disputing the championship points behind a breakaway front group of eight riders. Oliveira led the battling posse through to catch the stragglers from the breakaway, losing eighth with two laps to go, and failing to regain the spot by 0.024 seconds.

ADRID: Adriano scored the only goal as a Barcelona side without the injured Lionel Messi laboured to a 1-0 victory over Malaga. The Brazilian struck the decisive blow a minute before half-time with a left-footed effort that Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero will have been disappointed to see slip through his grasp. However, Malaga were left to rue two huge chances after the break as firstly Fabrice struck the post and then Sebastian Fernandez headed straight at Victor Valdes when completely unmarked inside the area in the closing stages. And Cesc Fabregas admitted that going forward the Catalans will need to improve on their performance in the second period. "The first-half was very good and we could have scored more," he told Canal Plus. "In the second it is true that we lost a bit of our intensity due to tiredness from the game on Wednesday. In the last five minutes we struggled but sometimes you have to do that. It was a hard-fought and important victory." Despite Messi's absence, Barca boss Gerardo Martino once again started with Neymar on the bench as Fabregas replaced the Argentine, whilst Alex Song and Adriano replaced Sergio Busquets and Dani Alves from the side that started Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of

IN BRIEF PCB fails to earn Rs 700m during India ODI series

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board has failed to realize earnings of approximately Rs 700 million (USD 6.7 million) which it expected to collect from its short limited over series in India last December and the proposed Super League T20 tournament. According to reliable sources, the matter came up for discussion at Saturday's meeting of the Governing Board which was informed about the shortfall in earnings in the annual budget. "The PCB was expecting to earn and clear a shortfall of around 700 million rupees from the one-day series in India and the PSL but in both cases it ended up earning nothing," one source said. He said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to share any revenue from the limited over series which was the first bilateral contest between the two nations since 2007 and was held in India.

F C Barcelona's Alexis Sanchez in action with Malaga's Vitorino Antunes from Portugal during a Spanish La Liga soccer match at La Rosaleda stadium in Malaga, Spain. the Spanish Super Cup. Without either of their South American attacking stars, Barca's build-up play was somewhat ponderous in the first period as they failed to break down a solid but limited Malaga side. Andres Iniesta

then fired an effort from the edge of the area straight down Caballero's throat, but the Argentine was forced into a stunning save nine minutes before the break as he blocked Alexis Sanchez's header from point-blank range.

However, Caballero was slightly at fault when Barca did eventually take the lead as Adriano cut inside onto his left foot and his curling effort flew over the Malaga keeper's outstretched arm on its way into the far corner.

Boxers set for World Championships’ trial P

ATIALA: One delay and many speculations later, Indian boxers will fight it out for a place in the national team for the World Championships when the threeday trials start here tomorrow. With the Indian Boxing Federation suspended, they would not get to compete under the country’s flag but the boxers would nonetheless fight it out for a spot in the national team of 10 which would be sent to Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Championships, where India have won two bronze

medals — in 2009 and 2011, would be held from October 11 to 27 in Almaty. India’s participation hinges on the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) green signal as the world body is clearing the country’s schedule on a tournamentto-tournament basis due to the IBF’s provisional suspension. The trials starting tomorrow were initially scheduled from August 16 to 18 but had to be postponed, the reasons for which were never explained clearly by the IBF.

Suranjoy Singh (52kg), who has been laid low by a knee injury after dominating the ring with eight back-to-back gold medals between 2010-11, would be back in the ring for perhaps his last shot at a World Championships medal. Also in fray is former Asian Championships silver-medallist Thokchom Nanao Singh (49kg) but he faces some very stiff competition from the likes of rising star L Devendro Singh. Devendro has been in top form ever since making a splash at the London Olympics last year.

Vijender back from leave, to participate in trials N

EW DELHI: Brushing aside speculations about his availability for the upcoming World Championship trials, star Indian boxer Vijender Singh today returned to Patiala from a short leave and would be taking the ring tomorrow to fight it out for a place in the team. “I had taken a short leave and my coaches and seniors knew of it. I had informed all the concerned authorities before leaving. There were some personal issues that I had to attend to and I am back in Patiala now,” Vijender told PTI over phone.

“I don’t understand how this speculation started but I would certainly be giving the trials tomorrow and hopefully manage a place in the side,” quipped the former world number one in middleweight (75kg) category. The former Olympic and World Championship bronze-medal winner’s return to the ring is being closely watched after the sabbatical he was forced into due to a drug scandal earlier this year. So much so that the leave he took last week led to speculation over whether he would fight it out tomorrow or not.

DUBAI: A draw in the fifth and final Test of Ashes series helped England leapfrog India to move into second position in the latest ICC Test Team Ranking chart, which is still headed by South Africa. England entered the series in third position with 112 ratings points. However, after taking a 3-0 lead in the fiveTest series, it needed either a draw or a win to move ahead of India into second position. Indian hockey is more professional now: Kurtz

IPOH, MALAYSIA: One the first foreign coaches to have worked with the Indian team, German Oliver Kurtz feels that Indian hockey has become more professional now, the lack of which resulted in the eight-time Olympic champions slide in the last three decades. Kurtz, who assisted countryman Gerhard Rach as coach of the Indian team in the 2004 Athens Olympics where the team finished seventh, reminisces his short stint with India and said a professional approach is key to any country's success in modern day hockey. "Indian hockey is more professional now. It is making a big difference. There is a totally different culture in Asia. Earlier, there was no professionalism in teams like India and Pakistan which I believe is a reason behind their fall in world hockey," Kurtz said.
