CITY OPINIONS

Do you think the coastal security in Mumbai is a farce? Farheen Siddiqui News producer YES. It’s been five years since the terror attacks which shook the city. But only tall claims have been made so far about improving coastal security, making us still quite vulnerable to terror attacks. It’s a shame that so many lives are put at risk. Priya Mayekar Lawyer NO. Coastal surveillance is on the verge of improvement. Modern technology needs to be adapted to keep it on high alert.

Zahabiya Takulla Service NO. There is not much improvement in coastal security. Our guards are not well equipped and the government is not doing much about it.

escape the atmosphere. Trapped heat thus increases the temperature. Once the disturbance in easterlies goes off, the sky will be clear and temperatures will automatically go down. On Tuesday, visibility went down considerably. Met officials described it as ‘haze’ (fog) which is a normal phenomenon during winter when particles of smoke and dust remain suspended in the air, causing low visibility. Due to the cyclone Lehar, several parts of Maharashtra including Pune, Satara and Lohagaon received rains on Tuesday and saw a rise in temperatures as a side effect. Eastern disturbances have been moving from Adaman and Nicobar to the western part of the country, and at present, are moving from Mumbai or Konkan to Marathwada.

hile 31 students from Saket College, Kalyan have found out that they have wasted their years and fees in studying a nonpermitted course, they haven’t received any assistance the varsity. After being bluffed by the college, students of this college stepped met the Vice-Chancellor and the Pro-Vice Chancellor of MU yesterday at the Fort Campus. These students were not allowed to enter the varsity. They waited for around four hours outside the MU’s entrance gate and later went back home. These 31 students of Bachelor of Accountancy and Finance (BAF) were not allowed by the MU to appear for their fifth semester exams earlier this month. The varsity has also informed them that their first and second year of graduation

have also been labeled as ineligible. These students’ qualification is now considered equivalent to that of a 10+2 passed student. A student who did not wish to be named said, “We have traveled all the way from Kalyan and can only seek a solution of this problem from the VC and PVC; but we are left without any support. The security guards did not allow us to enter the campus. If the MU’s authorities don’t address our problems, then where are we students supposed to go?” According to the students, they had reached the Fort campus of MU at 2 pm and waited till 6 pm to meet the authorities but to no avail. Dr. Naresh Chandra, PVC, MU said, “We met a few parents and the students’ representatives. We have told them that the MU cannot help in this issue and only the court’s decision will be the final solution”.

Grimly remembered

ive years after Mumbai was brought to its knees in a hail of gunfire and grenade blasts by 10 Pakistani terrorists, the nightmare continues to haunt the survivors and families of victims of the 26/11 attack. Solemn ceremonies were organised to pay tributes to the fallen heroes and victims of the most brazen terror assault in the country, there was no public outpouring of grief and outrage, no gigantic posters of bravehearts who laid down their lives in the line of duty in street corners for passersby to pay homage to, as pictures captured by Azad Shrivastav reveal. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, his deputy Ajit Pawar, Home Minister R R Patil and Union Minister Shashi Tharoor were prominent among those who paid floral tributes to martyrs at the Police Memorial at Marine Lines.

he two octroi officers who were accused of having a direct nexus in passing off consignments of prohibited gutkha and pan masala have been suspended by the Octroi Department. Dayanand Bapurao Howai (48) and Pradeep Sadhu Sonawale (42) were Octroi Inspectors in the Octroi Department of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. It is alleged that the duo had released a large consignment of pan masala and gutkha without physical verification, despite the items being banned. Both Howai and Sonawale, who were attached to Mumbai Central railway station, were absconding from duty since the Sessions Court rejected their plea for anticipatory bail on October 30 which the ADC Dayanand Bapurao Howai

had carried a story about. According to the prosecution, the octroi officers conspired with traders and agents – who brought the prohibited goods from out of the city – by preparing railway receipts stating that the consignments contained no prohibited goods. They also showed the value of some of the goods to be less than the actual price and also did not collect the octroi charges for the same. In fact, they helped to clear the consignments with the help of the parcel department officers. Rajendra Trivedi, Senior Police Inspector, Government Railway police said, “Dayanand Bapurao Howai and Pradeep Sadhu Sonawale have been suspended from duty.” However, he refused to comment any further. kainaz.choksey@afternoon.dc.in

O

n Tuesday, the Gamdevi Police registered a case of rape against an unidentified person. The accused befriended the victim on the pretext of providing her a job as a housemaid or housekeeper. Female staff at Nair Hospital demand better security By A Staff Reporter

T

he nurses at the BMC-run Nair Hospital along with other female staff of the hospital are planning to make their demand for better security for women employees in the hospital heard, by organising a protest at the hospital on November 27. This decision comes five days after a lady student nurse was allegedly molested by a relative of a patient in the elevator of the hospital. The accused was caught on November 25 by the hospital security and

handed over to the Agripada police. An NC has been filed in the case. “The victim gave a written complaint to the hospital authorities regarding the incident. It was after two days when the accused came to meet his patient that the security caught him. We are organising a meeting where we will demand better security for female employees. We want a lift man to be appointed. This can happen again and to any lady in the hospital”, said Trishila Kamble, Secretary, Nursing and Paramedical Staff Union.

Tehelka: Goa Police record victim’s statement in secrecy By Zuber Ansari

A

day after the victim in the sensational Tehelka sexual assault case quit her job, the Goa Police on Tuesday recorded the statement of the victim at a discreet location in Mumbai, not known even to the Mumbai Police. Shockingly, Tehelka magazine’s Mumbai office situated at 16TH Road in Khar (w) has been found locked with even stickers of the company hidden, because the woman scribe, who has accused former Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka Magazine Tarun Tejpal of molesting her twice, used to work in this office. Reacting to the issue, Mumbai police commissioner Dr. Satyapal Singh said, “we cooperated with the Goa Police

to the fullest extent and they have taken the victim’s statement. I don’t want to make any more comments.” Sources from Goa Police revealed that the girl has given a statement similar to the complaint which she had submitted to Tehelka magazine’s managing editor Shoma Choudhary at the time of incident. She had delayed filing a case immediately after the incident because Tarun Tejpal is a high profile person and has good relations with top politicians. Meanwhile, the Goa Police on Tuesday issued an immigration check post alert against Tarun Tejpal to stop him from leaving the country, because after Delhi High Court refused to grant him interim protection against arrest he may try to flee the country.

Court bowls out Pawar Continued from pg 1 « Sessions Court on Tuesday temporarily stayed him from functioning as the president of MCA. The court however, gave him a week to appeal against the order. According to rules laid down by the MCA, only a Mumbai resident can become president of the cricketing body. Munde’s application to

contest polls was rejected by the election officer on the basis of his residential status observing that address as per his electoral registration was Beed. Earlier, Munde’s lawyers Niranjan Bhadang and Vivekanand Gupta had raised the point of residential status of Pawar who was elected unopposed as MCA president in the biennial polls held last month. Munde has also named outgoing MCA president Ravi Savant, joint secretaries Nitin Dalal and P. V. Shetty,

C.T. Singhvi (of Vile Parle Club), who had raised the objection to Munde’s nomination and Gorwadkar as respondents. “The Lok Sabha’s website, till the time MCA election took place, showed Pawar’s address as Baramati and previously between 2001 and 2011, when Pawar was the president of MCA, he was having the election card showing Baramati as his address,” they argued. Reacting to this, Sawant said, “There is a Bombay High Court order of 2006 in which a person could have residences in different cities, but he is considered to be a permanent resident of only that place where his name appears on the electoral rolls.”

to light when a passerby alerted Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) attached to MHB police station and narrated the incident. Later, the ASI along with this man went near the Tempo and found Jayprakash Paal (22) raping her and caught him and consequently another accused. Senior Police Inspector (SPI) Suresh Kilje from MHB police station said, “We have arrested three accused Sonu Kamble, Aslam Khan and Jayprakash Paal for raping the minor while another unknown accused is absconding. All the accused are auto drivers, we have booked them under various section of IPC including 376 (D), 342, 506 (II) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012”. The girl has been sent to Dongri Child Rehabilitation centre, since was staying alone in the city, while all the accused have been sent to police custody till December 2, Kilje informed.

After hearing the application, Judge M. S. Sharma passed the interim order to Pawar to be restrained from functioning as MCA president pending hearing of his suit, challenging the NCP supremo’s election as its chief. According to advocate Vivekananda Gupta, “The court allowed Munde’s application seeking interim relief and restrained Pawar from functioning as MCA president. The court also directed for Munde’s suit to be heard on a day- to-day basis and to be decided within three months. Court has allowed Pawar to approach a higher court in appeal within a week.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

ven as the murderous attack on a woman inside an ATM kiosk in Bangalore is still fresh in the minds of the country, an attempt to rob an ATM in Virar on Monday night has exposed the chinks in the safety and security of the kiosks. According to the police, unidentified miscreants made an unsuccessful attempt to break open the ATM machine of Union Bank of India located in the Station Road area of Virar (East). Ashram student dies Parents of 12-year-old girl suspect foul play as her clothes were torn By A Staff Reporter

HONOURED: Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resource Development spoke at the 4th Sir M. Visvesvaraya Memorial Lecture organised by the World Trade Centre and was felicitated by Vijay Kalantri, Vice Chairman of WTC Mumbai and Capt. Somesh Batra on Tuesday.

made away with Rs. 10 lakh. During an interrogation, they confessed to having committed five such robberies with the use of choppers and chilli powder. Fake vehicle number plates and three cars have been seized from them,” he added. According to records the gang had stolen Rs. 20 lakh at CBD Belapur (State Bank of Travancore) in December 2012; Rs. 55 lakh from APMC's Union Bank cash van and another thwarted robbery in Vashi where the gang could only manage to flee with a laptop on June 24 this year.

12-year-old student of an ashram school here allegedly died of jaundice, but her parents are suspecting foul play, police said yesterday. While school authorities said the Class VI had died of jaundice on Sunday, her father claimed that when he had reached hospital, he saw that her clothes were torn and suspected that she was sexually assaulted, police said, according to a PTI report. The girl, a resident of Ghol village in Thane's Dahanu taluka, was studying in the ashram school in Dadhade village of Vikramgadh taluka of the district. On Saturday, she had called her family and asked them for money for sweets. However, on Sunday morning, her parents received a call from school informing them that their daughter was unwell. When her father

rushed to the government hospital at Vikramgadh, he was told that his daughter had died. The deceased's father told reporters yesterday that he had observed a deep wound on her leg and that her clothes were also torn, leading him to suspect that she was subjected to sexual assault. A police official said as per the school superintendent, the girl had suffered from jaundice and had died while being taken to the hospital on Sunday morning. The school authorities also said the girl had vomited on Saturday and her condition deteriorated further on Sunday morning, following which she was taken to the hospital. The police official said based on the information provided by the school authorities, they had registered a case of accidental death on the same day and sent the body for postmortem. In the meanwhile, the government hospital said the exact cause of death could be ascertained only after receiving the postmortem report.

Ponder awhile… “A criminal trial is never about seeking justice for the victim. If it were, there could be only one verdict: Guilty.” — Alan Dershowitz

Aarushi murder case: Talwars deserve death! I

T could not have been a case of honour killing. Rajesh Talwar who murdered his daughter belonged to an elitist strata of the society, where such horror does not take place. He is expected to be a liberal, liberated man. He is not like the khap criminals who punish women who ‘go morally wrong’. The khap folks’ mindset is like that. They are convinced they are doing right thing. There are also groups in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and some of the areas across the country who kill members of their own family if their kin does anything ‘immoral’. It is a fact what Rajesh and his wife Nupur Talwar did not experience any prick of their conscience after they murdered their 14-year-old daughter. They killed the domestic help Hemraj who was found in a compromising position with their daughter Aarushi. Clearly it was not a premeditated crime. That was one of the reasons that made the CBI court decide on not giving them a death sentence. The court, however, found sufficient evidence to hold them guilty. It was a 15-month trial: The investigation in the case had gone on for five and a half years. What is quite incredible is that when the CBI began investigation on the case, it found after a short while, no evidence of guilt another part of the Talwars. It closed the case. The same CBI took up the investigation after the surfacing of some new development in the case and found the Talwars’ involvement in the twin murder. The CBI court, one may feel, should have awarded the death sentence. It was a brutal murder, which many feel deserve the death sentence. The Talwars are contesting the verdict in the High Court. They are hoping that they will be found innocent. After the High Court, they will go to the Supreme Court. Many who have been horrified by the monstrous murder of Aarushi are perhaps hoping that the higher courts will change the CBI court verdict and give the Talwars death sentence.

ONVENTIONAL political wisdom suggests that a jump in voter turnout means an impending defeat for the incumbent government. So, are the two poster boy chief ministers of the BJP, Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Madhya Pradesh and Raman Singh in Chhattisgarh, in trouble then? Both states recorded exceptionally high voter turnouts in the just concluded polls. In Chhattisgarh, the figure jumped by as much as 4.02 per cent from 2008 to 75.11 per cent. Interestingly, the thickly-forested and hardto-reach Bastar region posted a higher turnout than north Chhattisgarh’s flat lands with the State Election Commission putting the figure at a whopping 75.53 per cent. While the BJP is understandably worried about what all this means for its state governments, the irony is that the Congress is equally anxious. Put the Congress party’s worry down to the BJP’s Narendra Modi factor. Leaders of the Grand Old Party just can’t figure out whether more people showed up at polling booths this time to vote the BJP government out or to vote Modi in ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Remember, Modi has staked his political future on the results of this round of state polls. A 4-0 outcome in favour of the BJP will cement Modi’s top of the pops image and silence his critics. Anything less and the carping will grow louder. The Election Commission maintains that the steady rise in voter turnout in every election is due to its untiring efforts to spread the message of adult franchise to all nooks and corners of the country. But political parties are completely confounded. The new, demanding voter has them foxed.

azine Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal, has been hit by charges of sexually assaulting a junior employee in a Goa lift. And Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s handpicked aide and former home minister, Amit Shah, is under investigation for unauthorized surveillance of a woman architect on orders of saheb. Something is very wrong somewhere. How is it that leading public figures representing important institutions have landed themselves in a gender controversy at virtually the same time? Is it a reflection of the misogynist mindset of Indian males, born and bred in a deeply patriarchal and orthodox social milieu? The fact that three cases are in the news simultaneously suggests that gender crimes are almost endemic in our country. There is a silver lining, however. Two of the

Similarly, all Tejpal’s powerful connections and celebrity friends fell silent under the onslaught from social media which forced conventional media to pick up cudgels on behalf of the young journalist who was violated. Most newspapers and TV channels ignored the news when it first broke. But under sustained fire from a new generation of angry youth, they could not stay silent. The most heartening aspect of at least the Tejpal case is the manner in which young males have shown solidarity with the woman journalist in question. Not just her men colleagues but a range of male voices is on social media lending support to feminists and women activists fighting up for the woman journalist. All three cases are an important test for the two new gender laws passed this year. One is the prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace and the other is the amended antirape law. Hopefully, the winds of change are blowing.

Gender controversy: Winds of change are blowing

I

Be joyful, be compassionate... W

HEN you finish your work and go home, who prevents you to enjoy walking meditation and touching the beauties around you and listen to the birds and contemplating the blue sky or the stars? Why do you have to maintain your fear, your anger, your depression all the time? You have to practice the same. If you only talk about the difficulty, the illness, the despair, if you don't have the time to get in touch with the positive elements within you, around you and even in the person of your patient, of your guest, that would be a pity because in a person of your guest, there's suffering, there's depression, there's a fear, but there is also the capacity of joy — of being joyful, of being compassionate. You, the therapist, can help touch the positive seeds in him or in her and, by talking to him or to her, by inviting him or her to take a cup of tea and to touch the wonders of life, you can help him or her restore her balance so that she can go home more light, more joyful. So mindfulness is always helping, whether the object of mindfulness is positive or negative. Anger, fear, is negative. Mindfulness holding anger and fear and giving anger and fear patience to be penetrated by the tenderness, by the attention, by the care and a chance to be

transformed. Mindfulness is the energy that brings along, that carries within itself, the energy of concentration. And wherever there is mindfulness in concentration, there is insight. If you live your life mindfully with concentration, you live every moment of your life deeply and you begin to understand deeply what is there that happened in the present moment and that is why insight is the outcome, the flower that bloom on the ground of mindfulness and concentration and insight is what

MATTER & SPIRIT that can liberate you. If you have insight and then even in prison you are free. You as a corrections officer, you can be a Bodhisattva and your life will be filled with joy and hope. If you know how to bring understanding and compassion into you, you'll help transform our society and, first of all, you have transformed yourself and you have transformed your department, your community, your administration, and together you can bring relief and transformation into the life of the inmates. As a police officer, you can be a Bodhisattva, an enlightened being filled with understanding and

compassion, capable of being joyful, capable of smiling, because you have peace within yourself. A police officer is someone that is supposed to promote, to bring peace, because your duty is to maintain peace. This means the absence of conflict and violence and anger. And you should have peace within yourself in order to truly doing the work of peace. Doing peace is not possible without being peace and being peace is your practice, recognizing the violence, the fear, the anger in you, embracing them, transforming them, getting in touch with the wonderful things, healing, nourishing around you and in you for your nourishment and for the nourishment of your community and family. That should be your daily practice. And you can be seen as a human being capable of loving, of understanding, of protecting, and that is the image of police officer you have to create. And this very important for us because we need to see you as a human being capable of being peaceful, of being lucid, of being understanding and compassionate and we trust you. If you act only on the basis of your fear, of your anger, we will not trust you and that is why the practice of peace is very important in a community of police officers, the corrections officers and among others, psychotherapists, a doctor, a teacher, should practice the same. — Thich Nhat Hanh

Team India struggling with weak bowlers BOWLING is India’s weakest link as West Indies managed to trounce India in the 2nd ODI at Visakhapatnam to level the current series and keeping the three-match series ‘alive’. While India has a strong batting lineup, perhaps the best in the world, our bowling doesn’t have much penetration. We are a poor bowling side when compared to other cricket playing nations. Zaheer Khan now fully fit from injuries and is bowling well in domestic cricket and has been rightly reinstated to strengthen our bowling attack. He has experience and happens to be the best bowler in our country today and his inclusion in the side should improve the sagging morale of our bowlers. Also, other young talent from domestic cricket needs to be given exposure looking at the future and to build our team for the next World Cup. With many senior players retiring and some on the verge of retirement, we must look at domestic cricket which must be made more competitive to fuel our national side in the days to come. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

ALL said and done, Team India lost the second ODI despite Virat Kohli just missing a hundred. Like Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli spent more time from 90 to 99 and that put paid the team’s hopes in the final analysis. As a

Punish judge if found guilty ‘A SEXUAL molestation charge against a judge’ (ADC, Nov 25), it is indeed a very shameful act by a judge, as compared to other professions, judges command a respect not only in the professional arena but in society as well. We have read about sexual crimes committed by different sections of the society in rural and urban areas as well of late. In this case, as this edit piece reveals very rightly that the profession of the judges is to penalise/ punish a criminal in the court of law and thus they enjoy a respectful position in society. In this case, three young judges had alleged that a retired judge committed certain sexual advances, which were unfathomable by the victims. It is felt prudent that if there is any substance in the allegations, then certainly, the judge should be punished like any other offender.

mementos and gifts in his final outing in Mumbai. Sachin has won all the trophies and so he wanted a piece of art as a farewell gift. The only thing he missed in his bright career is a triple hundred in Test Cricket. Unfortunately as the longest serving member of Indian team he could not experience a series win in Australia or in South Africa. — Akhilesh S. Maniam, Sion

BOWLING BLUES: Team India’s bowling department needs to be beefed up. The gritty West Indians proved it by blasting our bowlers to win the 2nd ODI. vice-captain Kohlli should have gone for free hitting rather than seeing his personal achievement and going into record books. This is a bad example our players set for youngsters. Creating records is not the only criteria to become famous. One should play for the country as well. Kohli’s on field behaviour is also going from bad to worse and not becoming of a future captain. He had hell of a problem and reprimanded but he has not learnt from his past mistakes. Like Harbhajan Singh he is trying to overdo everything and that was clearly visible in the Vishakapatnam defeat. Slow scoring at the end of his innings was the reason for the defeat of the Indian Team. Kohli should play briskly like Sammy rather

than creating records in Sachin’s style. — C. Krishnan Subramaniam, Sanpada

SACHIN Tendulkar has achieved all the laurels in the cricketing field and there is nothing left in his long and illustrious career. He hit a purple patch in his cricketing career of 24 years and never looked back after playing his first knock in the Karachi Test in 1989 against Pakistan. He did a marvellous job in saving the team from disaster often and created many world records in the process as well. International cricket taught him to be a gentleman and on the eve of his retirement he had made a request not to pamper him with

Israel’s friendly acts AS per a press report appearing in a section of the print media, India had secretly received arms aid from Israel prior to the 1971 Indo-Pak war. That was the time when there were no diplomatic relations between India and the Jewish State. No need to pay bribes NOT DONE: Arvind Kejriwal blames the Cong, BJP and the web portal for targeting his party but has nothing to say about the massive funds received by his AAP.

UDRS is implemented with the mutual consent of the teams. But replays are shown in all cases, even when there is no UDRS and hence no third umpire. Sometimes, when the replay shows that the umpire erred there is a big hullabaloo and particularly so if the player is a crowd favourite. In India the biggest noise is made if it involves Tendulkar. My suggestion is that if there is no UDRS then no replays should be shown. It is unfair to the umpire. If you don’t want wrong decisions, then implement UDRS. True, even with UDRS, wrong decisions may sometimes occur, but if mistakes are made when someone has three camera views in slow motion and as much as two to three minutes to decide, then how do you expect a field umpire to be always correct when decisions are to be given in seconds after watching it in real time with no benefit of a slow motion replay? — T.R. Not in the right spirit AS per reports in the print media, ten TV channels in Pakistan have been fined more than Rs.one crore for showing Indian programmes by PEMRA (Pakistan Electric Media Regulatory Authority). Now what we should do to the Pakistani artists who earn here in India crores of rupees and don’t pay the taxes and buy flats and properties worth crores. They take lakhs of US dollars to Pakistan and when caught our “impotent” politicians interfere and release them. Is there any medium which can investigate this? CBI probe in Aarushi murder case dicey

UNSATISFACTORY: Though the CBI court has held the Talwar couple guilty of the double murder, the way the entire probe was conducted leaves much to be desired. THE Aarushi Talwar murder case which dragged for more than five years has now been concluded by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court holding the Talwar couple guilty of murdering their daughter and domestic help Hemraj. However, the manner in which the investigation was conducted leaves much to be desired. Right from the time the girl’s body was discovered, the police did little to preserve the crime scene. In fact, media persons were allowed to trample all over the house, possibly destroying the evidence. It was only later that the body of Hemraj was discovered on the terrace, which again seems to suggest that the police were not thorough in their probe. The police thought nothing of making ugly accusations about the dead girl and also her parents. Despite the court verdict, many ques-

tions still remain about the mobile phone of Aarushi which was later found and the CBI did not find any blood of Hemraj on Aarushi’s pillow or in the room except the liquor bottle with bloodstains from which no evidence was recovered. All this proves the lack of professionalism in the investigation by the authorities who also conducted the narco-tests on suspects and the parents which did not produce any positive result. The fact is that the police do not have any concrete evidence and the media is covering the case without any substance. The CBI should not boast about its role in this case which has come to the conclusion that the parents are guilty of the murder of their daughter and domestic help, though the Talwars are going to appeal in the high court. —Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION

Q1What were the objectives of the League of Nations? Ans. The objectives of the League of Nations were: 1) To establish world peace and security. 2) To establish friendly and co-operative relations between the nations. 3) To solve the international issues with peace, avoiding war. 4) All member nations are secular and independent and for the sake of national security all should follow the rule of League of Nations. 5) Obeying the International Laws.

Introduction Russian Revolution is a turning point of history of the world. In 19th century political, social and economic conditions declined in Russia; during the period of Tsar of Romanov Dynasty. In the beginning of the 20th century, Tsar’s empire spread in a large area. Social conditions in his period were extremely unequal. Due to feudalism and serfdom, common people were living in a miserable condition. While comparing the other European Nations, the Industrial development of Russia was not so good. Industries in Russia were in the hands of the capitalists and they were exploiting the workers. They were not given advanced technology. So it was difficult to give quality production. As a result, the economic conditions of Russia started to decline. Russia at the threshold of the Revolution The revolutionaries’ ideas reached Russia in the middle of the 19th century. The educated class became aware of exploitation and the need to oppose it. The Nihilist advocated absolutely freedom. The idea of Karl Marx had reached Russia and influenced the views of the Russian intellectuals. Karl Marx (1818-1883) Karl Marx was a German philosopher who wrote ‘Das Capital’. In association with Fredrick Engles he wrote ‘Communis Manisfesto’ (1848). He made a scientific study of social development and pointed out the need for an exploitationfree society. He believed that changes in economic system will change social customs and values. He pointed out that those who own the means of production (the haves) exploit the poor (the have nots). He appealed to the workers of the world to unite for fundamental social change. The Russian revolution saw a conflict between the Tsar and his rich supporters on the one hand and the workers and farmers on the other. Despotic Rule in Russia Before the revolution took place Russia had been under the reign of the Romanov dynasty for three centuries. The Tsars were opposed to the liberal ideas, denied rights and freedom to the people. Agriculture was the backbone of the Russian economy. However, the feudalism resulted in misery for the farmers.

Bloody Sunday (23-1-1905) The defeat of Russia in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) intensified resentment. Father Gapon led a silent protest march in St Petersburg to submit a memorandum to the Tsar. The soldiers attacked the protestors and many succumbed to death. This ghastly incident on 23 January 1905 is known as ‘Bloody Sunday’. Some Important Questions Q1. Why did the democratic experiment fail in Russia? (20 to 25 words) Ans. The persistent demand led to the formation of the Russian Parliament, known as Duma, in 1906. The confrontation between the Duma and the Tsar led to the dissolution of the First Duma and subsequently the Second Duma was dissolved on the grounds of differences with the members. But, the third Duma became a puppet in the hands of the Tsar. Duma couldn’t do any noteworthy work. Thus, the democratic experiment failed in Russia. Q2 Write about Lenin’s New Economic Policy. (30 to 40 words) Ans. Lenin announced a New Economic Policy, which consisted of both privatisation and nationalisation to some extent. This policy of Lenin was opposed by the extremist Communist leaders. Lenin defended his decision by saying that ‘it was sensible to go couple of steps back, after having gone three steps ahead.’ Importance of NEP 1) Collective farming 2) Open market 3) New currency 4) Small and large scale industries The NEP caused a big increase in the agriculture and industrial production. Lenin’s contribution to world history is certainly enlightening and noteworthy. Q3. Write the significance of Russian Revolution (60 to 80 words) Ans. 1) The Russian Revolution has a significant place in the history of modern world. This was the first revolution inspired by the philosophy of Karl Marx.

The working class acquired great importance due to this revolution and gave the world a direction to bring about social development through economic planning. It was an attempt to create a social order without religion, class and exploitation. The concept of ‘welfare state’ was accepted and the message of total freedom from all sorts of restrictions was given. The event ushered in a new era and brought about fundamental changes in the political, social, economic, cultural and scientific fields of Russia. There rose a new form of governance and communism gave birth to new values. The revolution set up the principle of equality co-operation and global fraternity.

Q4. Give reasons (20 to 30 words) a) The condition of the common people and workers in Russia was miserable. Ans. 1) The industrial development in Russia was inadequate and as a result, there were very few jobs. 2) The workers were paid low wages and forced to work for long hours. 3) The government turned down the demands for reforms made by the workers and for more land made by the farmers. Therefore, the condition of common people and workers in Russia was miserable. b) All round development of Russia did not take place. Ans. 1) The industrial development of Russia was unsatisfactory. 2) The quality of production was inferior due to outdated production technology. 3) The Tsar did not pay any attention to the welfare of the people. Therefore, all-round development of Russia did not take place. C) League of Nations Introduction The destruction of the First World War led the thinkers and government in the world to think seriously about the foundation of an international organisation to prevent war. President Woodrow Wilson of the USA advocated the need to establish the League of Nations at the Paris Peace Conference. Accordingly, the League of Nations was established on 10th January 1920 with 32 members. Aims and Objectives Structure of the League: a) Assembly b) The Committee c) Secretariat The International Court and other organisations Achievements and failures Some important questions

Q2. Write functions and three main factors of League of Nations. (60 to 80 words) Ans. The administration of the League of Nations was to be run through three main parts—the Assembly, the Committee and Secretariat. The Head Office of League of Nations was at Geneva in Switzerland. 1) Assembly: a) The Assembly of the League of Nations was like an Assembly of Nation. b) All representatives of the member nations were members of the Assembly and each nation had right of one vote. Out of all representatives one was being elected as the president of the Assembly. Functions: It look after the plans and programmes of the League of Nations, control over other branches, and discuss the issues that disturb international peace. 2) The Committee: a) The Committee means executive body of the League of Nations. The Assembly was sending its recommendations to the Committee. It included five permanent and four non-permanent members. Along with those five, other four were elected by the Assembly from the representatives of the member nations. Functions: 1) To implement the decisions of the League of Nations, to solve the crisis among the nations, control of the Secretarial office. 2) The Committee could handle any issue related to world peace. 3) Secretariat: The Secretariat was the office of the League of Nations. The chief of this office was known as the Secretary General or the Secretary. Functions: 1) To register the complaints coming to the League, to collect information about the grievances, to keep the documents of the administrative work, to pass the information of the decisions of the League of Nations to all the nations. 2) To execute the decisions of the Committee and to look after the regular administration of the League of Nations. Q3. Give reasons: a) The League of Nations was unable to restrain the warring countries. Ans.: 1) There was lack of coordination between the principal nations like France and England. 2) The policies of the strong nations like Germany, Italy and Japan were selfish and contrary to the basic ideas of the League of Nations. 3) Therefore, the League of Nations was unable to restrain the warring countries. Q 4. Why did the League of Nations fail to attain its objectives? Ans. 1) The United States of America decided not to join the League of Nations. 2) The leadership provided by England and France was weak and lacked cohesion. 3) The League failed to restrain the acts of aggression by Germany, Italy and Japan. 4) The League of Nations did not have its army to take action against the belligerent nations. Q5. Give information about the International Court of Justice. Ans. 1) The International Court of Justice, situated at the Hague in Netherlands, was an affiliated organ of the League of Nations. 2) It consisted of fifteen judges, elected for a term of nine years. 3) It resolved crisis among the members states of the League. 4) It provided legal advice to the League of Nations.

Most recognised institutes in India offer a graduation degree after completing consecutive years of F.Y / S.Y/ T.Y. (in the case of BA). Please do not enroll with an unrecognised institute which offers a short cut to obtain a degree. Alternatively, you can enroll with a Distance/Open University and complete your graduation.

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2013 minute you get out of Grant Road Station (E). It serves a basic variety of food, the most noteworthy being the famous mava cake. Other things I love here are the veg puff, mava puff, jam puff, pudding, plum cake, tea, cold drinks with omlette bread and ofcourse the famous bun maska and bun maska jam. What I love about the place is that it is not expensive and you see people of all ages savouring the goodies here. It does look like a gloomy place but you can judge its popularity by the occasional people you see coming in their BMWs and Mercedes cars.

India: One Country – Many Cultures

A

Saisha Bacha, H.R. College

s the seven colours of the rainbow pass through a prism, they emit a single ray of white light and thus emerges the beauty of oneness. Such is the story of our India, where a kaleidoscope of cultures makes us one people. Secularism, liberty, fraternity and tolerance, brotherhood, mark the significance of our rich cultural heritage that took root in ancient civilizations. It is in this nation, India, where Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism were born,

which is the second largest Muslim nation in the world, where Christianity has existed for over 2000 years; where the oldest Jewish synagogues and Jewish communities have resided, where the Zoroastrians from Persia have thrived since being persecuted from their ancient homeland. It is in India that a medley of religions makes a symphony; the various flavours and tastes make her a gastronomical delight. The colours, the contrast, the diversity make India so flamboyant and magnificent. The beautiful landscapes from the charismatic Kashmir

to Kanyakumari, glorious Gujarat, majestic Madhya Pradesh, the soulful south, all stand apart so vividly in their individual threads, yet so beautifully woven together to make the fabric of India. What is it that brings about this unity in diversity? This oneness among a population of over a billion? It surely must be our values that are inherently the same across the nation, no matter which region or religion we belong to. Yes, we may have our individual differences, we may stand divided in our beliefs, but in times of threat, we

stand together, in times of strife we bond together. We celebrate each festival with as much pomp, be it Holi, Diwali or Christmas. We are many cultures, many people, yet we merge into one nation, just as the rivers and streams flow into the ocean. We share the same glory and grief that comes to India. We have the same flame of patriotism burning in our souls, we Indians stand apart as individuals yet stand together as One India. “And when all the wars are over, a butterfly will still be beautiful.” – Ruskin Bond

aking hard drives to another level is WD’s latest My Passport Ultra. The sleek design and the interesting texture and colours make this a definite eye catcher. However, the top of the drive feels a little weak and flexes if you put pressure on it, but is no cause for concern. Fusing style with performance, the Ultra allows a seamless transfer of files and media, and is one of the fastest drives equipped with USB 3.0. However, it will work slightly slower if you’re using it on a device configured with USB 2.0. The impressive bit however are the utilities included in the drive. The WD Drive Utilities segment allows you to check the status of your drive, run a quick drive selftest, perform a full media scan to detect bad sectors and set the

amount of idle time before the drive goes to sleep. The WD Security segment allows you to protect your drive with a password, secure it with the 256-bit hardware encryption. However, you can’t password protect specific folders, which reduces the effectiveness of the password protect option a little. The WD SmartWare segment allows you to back up data from your system not only to the drive, but also to Dropbox. You will need to first activate Dropbox using an activation code and can then schedule backups as frequently as you’d like and even have backups based on categories. Priced at Rs.4,299 for 500 GB, Rs.5,999 for 1TB and Rs.10, 499 for 2TB, the Ultra is a little steep as compared to other variants. But considering the features it offers, it is a pretty decent buy.

TRAINING TO SUCCEED

Albana Khatri, who has worked in the Training and Development field for a number of years, working with the likes of some of the top names in the hotel business including The Park, Svenska Design Hotels and Ginger Hotels, talks to Gayatri Sahasrabuddhe about the field and what it’s all about

What exactly is training all about? Training is all about sharing knowledge and experiences. If you have a zest for sharing knowledge and enlightening people gives you satisfaction, then training is the field for you. The culture of formal training started in the west when organisations realised the importance of making team members grow internally. With experience that came from working on the shop floor, internal growth also meant gearing up team members with adequate skills and knowledge to deal with challenges of a higher role. Adults learn through experiential learning. Training includes learning through examples and real life experiences which helps to connect between the trainer and trainee. What kind of person would make the perfect trainer?

The right person to become a trainer is someone who is able to connect with people, a person who is an extrovert and who has great convincing skills. Having good communication skills is also important and helpful. If you are good at convincing people, you’re in the right field. You may not have all the answers to the questions asked to you; however it is critical that a trainer deals with the questions with confidence and reassures the trainee that the right answer will be given to him/her at a defined time. Before training anyone, you, as a trainer, must be convinced about your subject.

« ALUMNI SPEAK

are numerous.

What is the growth like in this field? In India, companies are beginning to take Training and Development very seriously. Many multinational companies now even have the post of Director of Training and Development. As a trainer you become a master of all functions and it becomes easy to move from one function to another. The move is swift and you can move into various functions. This opens up a lot of avenues for trainers.

Is it a well-paying career? The returns are very good. There is a good demand for quality trainers and organisations are willing to pay a pray price for them. Two per cent of the annual budget in top companies is spent on training and development. Freelancers are paid extremely well.

So what does a trainer’s typical job profile or schedule include? The job profile includes designing a training calendar, auditing training, analysis and understanding the training needs of an organization, skill development and team building. Developing content to the specific needs of the organisation, constructing standards to run smooth operations are just <<Albana some of the tasks performed Khatri by a trainer. What according to you are the high and low points of this career? Well, one of the high points would be that you get to meet a new set of people and learn from their experiences. It is also a very creative field. Through training you are able to impart knowledge and influence the minds of people. There is nothing more fulfilling and satisfying than being able to do that and setting them in the right direction. One of the low points is

« MENTOR’S DESK that the job can get repetitive and could lead to boredom. Where are trainers likely to get employment apart from in companies? Apart from working in the Training and Development department of a company, you

also have the option of working as a freelance trainer. Freelance Trainers are in great demand. Not all organisations can afford a full-fledged training department. Many of these companies who want quality trainers opt for freelancers rather than having trainers on payroll. So the options in this field

What kind of qualifications will help you get into this field and succeed? There are several institutes that give diplomas in Training and Development, nationally we have the ISTD (Indian Society of Training and Development) based out of Delhi. Internationally we have ASTD (American Society of Training and Development). In addition to this there are several reputed firms that conduct ‘Train The Trainer’ programmes for freshers. Even if you do get formalised training in any of the courses mentioned, most companies will initially hire you as an administrative executive till you know the operations and subject matter and domain well enough. You need to be an expert in the subject before you train.

Youth of Mumbai pledge for peace “Today and every day, I will bring peace to the world by respecting the dignity of life in myself and in everyone I meet,” pledged the students of Welingkar Institute

T

he youth of Mumbai vowed to spread peace and forgiveness by taking the ‘Pledge of Peace’ on November 22 along with survivors of one of the most tragic incidents witnessed by Mumbai and the nation. The oath was administered at Welingkar Institute by Kia Scherr, founder, One Life Alliance and Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool, along with students from various city colleges and children from St. Mary’s Shelter Home. Students from International Universities attending exchange programmes at WeSchool had also joined the ceremony, adding a global touch to the event. The ‘Pledge of Peace’ ceremony was part of the CSR initiative initiated by WeSchool students titled, ‘We Wish You Peace’ to celebrate the resilient spirit of Mumbai at the outset of the fifth anniversary of the 26/11 terrorist attack.

The evening culminated into a star studded fashion show where prominent celebrities did a peace walk to celebrate the relentless spirit of Mumbai and spread the message of peace along with the children from the St. Mary’s Shelter Home, whose education for a year will be sponsored by WeSchool. Talking on the occasion Kia Scherr, Founder, One Life Alliance said, “After my husband and daughter were killed in 26/11 attacks, I am determined to create the opposite of terrorism – to love like an extremist so that we can increase the power of peace in as many ways as possible. The time has come to join together as one. Together we can make a difference. “This is a mutual choice – I chose Welingkar and Welingkar chose me after I spoke to 200 students last year about my response to 26/11. The students came forward with so many creative ideas to increase peace around the city. I

knew this would be an ongoing collaboration. This is just the beginning.” “WeSchool’s core value ‘we link and care’ has been our guiding principle. Understanding, empathy, compassion and peace have therefore become central to WeSchool’s vision and agenda. Terror in any form be it the attack such as the one on 26/11, or the numerous attacks on women is sad. We need to study the root cause and address it. Every individual has the power to make a difference and we must play an active role at our homes, in society and the nation at large to assimilate this. We strongly believe in initiatives such as ‘We Wish You Peace’ and Kia Scherr’s mission to spread the message of peace can help unite people, communities and nations. It is indeed our privilege to support this cause and help spread the message of peace,” said Prof. Dr. Uday Salunkhe, Group Director, WeSchool.

‘My title changes with my role’ Says Chaitally Parmar, Creative Supervisor at Phantom Films, as she talks about her training in every aspect of film making.

I

am a part of every film that is produced within the company and my title changes depending on what roles I have played on a film. I have co-written ‘Queen’ on which I am also an associate director. I have played the role of an associate producer for ‘Lootera’ I did a Diploma in Business of Films and Television from Whistling Woods International (WWI) and was a part of the pilot batch, i.e. 2006-08. The campus is painted in white which adds to its serenity and resonates Greek architecture. The new faces extended such a warm welcome as if we were entering a new family (also we were the first batch). We were introduced to all faculties and our Chairman and Founder – Subhash Ghai – personally came to our classes to brief us about the world of cinema and the life that lay ahead. Our faculties and student bodies shared a great chemistry. College was an extended family for us. All our professors were true torch bearers of the society. Their wide experience, innovative and upgraded teaching methodology, helped us understand our subjects really well. Our biggest strengths were our Chairman and Founder, while the President and Executive Director were also always there for us. The state of the art technology in the campus helped us immensely. The classes were highly interactive and all our suggestions were taken seriously. Also, as a part of curriculum we were exposed to various NGOs which helped us become more responsible to the society. We were allocated separate condominiums and we had a bus that would pick us up from the hostel. At times we walked to the campus. College life was great. Learning was never burdensome. We always enjoyed the process, from classes to making films on campus and off campus, doing everything that happened in the ‘real world’ including fighting with the ‘crew’ who also happened to be our friends and batch mates to going back to the hostel and hanging out in the common area talking about the ‘industry’. The institute is located at Filmcity in Goregaon. We used to hang out in the campus itself. Our cafeteria was a big hit when it came to socialising. I had a diverse friend circle. Thanks to the institute, we had the opportunity to meet people from all parts of the country and abroad. The campus was always buzzing with innovative thoughts and stimulating conversations. We used to get caught for not wearing the col-

lege T-shirt. Therefore we used to hide under tables, run away from the canteen and hide behind trees just to escape getting caught. My education has helped me in more ways than one. It gave me a certain direction, a job to start with and there on the freedom to figure out what I want to do since I was trained in almost every aspect of film making. If I had not gone to a film school and just trained practically I would not have had the choice to pick what I want to do in various areas of film making. The WWI Campus is set in the midst of the city’s green patch, with acres to explore and learn. The beauty around is very inspiring. WWI believes that each aspiring student, faculty member etc. should be able to absorb this environment first hand, before deciding whether to be a part of it. Therefore they extend the option of booking a campus tour with them. This is a very unique idea indeed. Students and parents can both take this tour to explore what life at WWI is like, with its wonderful combination of classroom and real world teachings. Whistling Woods International is renowned for programmes and courses that are intensive and offer world-class education in all aspects of animation, film, fashion, media and communication thus providing an edge to its students. The school promises learning in a professional environment, where students learn from working professionals and stalwarts of the industry. WWI is distinguished by its unique in-depth specialisation programmes. The campus includes in-house facilities like studios, high-tech cameras and equipment, faculty, weekly celebrity master classes, specialisation curricula, student productions etc. The school also includes a Sony Technology Centre in Mumbai which is one of the third facilities in the world. The international tie-ups have enabled the students of WWI to travel and co-produce films with other campuses, and get first-hand exposure about working with film students there, and learning new techniques of film making. The small classroom sizes ensure personal attention to each individual, offering the guidance and mentoring necessary for the student to focus, excel and realise his/her potential.

The UK has been welcoming international students for over a century, with a global reputation for excellence in the field of education and skills. Annually, 4,00,000 overseas students study at UK institutions, of which almost 30,000 are currently from India.

Andrew Soper, Counsellor (Prosperity), British High Commission, New Delhi: The UK has been welcoming international students for over a century. There are currently 4,30,000 international students from Non-EU countries studying in the UK of which almost 30,000 are from India. There is no cap on the number of Indian students in the UK and you can work after study in a graduate level job. In fact, we want to attract more world-class individuals with the knowledge and expertise that will drive leading research and economic growth. We want to attract the brightest and best to study and work, but at the same time ensure that everyone who comes to the UK is coming to do a legitimate job or is a genuine student coming to study at a genuine institution. Student visa regulations protect and support genuine Indian students at UK universities and still allow them to work while studying. In addition, doors remain open for students to work after study in graduate level employment for those earning a graduate level salary (£20,000+) for up to 3 years, with the possibility of extending for a further 3 years. There has been no change to ability to work during study for those students at Higher Education Institutions studying at/above degree level (20 hours per week in term time and full time in the holidays). A new visa has been introduced for graduate entrepreneurs, which allows students who have world-class innovative ideas to stay in the UK and develop their ideas. For those Indians who aspire for an international study experience and professional development, the UK remains the preferred destination. And, we remain committed not only to welcoming Indian students to the UK but also offering them an unparalleled environment to help accelerate their professional aspirations and growth.

In fact, Dr. Hemal says that if there is any financial investment required, it is in learning the course. However, she also adds that there are scholarships and discounts available to students below 25 years of age. Moreover, the returns from this field are impressive as the minimum charge for a session could range anywhere between Rs.700 and Rs.5,000, depending on the experience and expertise of the therapist. “One can learn and practice hypnotherapy easily if the person is interested in the science. It doesn’t require any superior intelligence to understand and practice this therapy because it is very logical and simple,” says Dr. Hemal. Clinical Hypnotherapy is a part of psychology and is an interesting science known to tap into past lives and resolve marital and worklife problems. It is quick and relaxing, and helps analyse the human mind.

Exams mostly cause stress for students. This isn’t limited to students, but parents too seem to be under high stress with their wards’ examinations. Many parents are increasingly encouraging their children to consume energy drinks and memory boosters. But, is this the right way to go about dealing with stress and getting a good score? We ask students to share their opinion on the same. I have personally never taken it. During exam time, you are not supposed to face so much stress and be afraid of forgetting your lessons. Taking exams is not hard work as long as you make a time table and learn step by step, seriously. If you do that, you won’t face much stress and won’t be swamped with work. Bhavi, UPG College of Management First, I have personally never taken a memory supplement or any kind of booster. Parents who are encouraging their children to take them are wrong. I believe that medicine of any kind, if taken without medical advice, can cause health issues and affect the liver. Plus, students have to understand that it all depends on their ability and training, and not on boosters. Rohan Varghes, Sydenham College According to me, memory supplement is ok, but energy drinks are not useful. Anyway, even the effects of memory supplements are not that great. Only natural memory can help us during exams. I have personally never tried them during my exams.

haziabad: Dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were today sentenced to life term by a CBI court after they were convicted of killing their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj five-and-a-half years ago. 49-year-old Rajesh and Nupur (48) were spared the death penalty by Additional Session Judge Shyam Lal who rejected the CBI plea for maximum punishment after the premier probe agency submitted that the case fell in the “rarest of rare” category. Arguing before the court on quantum of punishment in the sensational double murder that had gripped the nation as one of the most puzzling crimes ever, CBI counsel R.K. Saini argued that the killing was a cold-blooded murder and fell in the “rarest of rare” category. Defence counsel Tanvir Mir countered CBI’s argument and said the evidence against his clients were weak and sought leniency for Talwars. The arguments lasted just five minutes before the judge adjourned proceedings and pronounced the quantum of sentence at 4.30 PM. The Talwar couple remained composed. The Talwar couple were also sentenced for five years for destruction of evidence and Rajesh for another one year for filing wrong FIR with police. All the sentences pronounced by the judge, who relied heavily on the circumstantial evidence provided by the CBI, will run concurrently. The dentist couple were on Monday convicted in the murder of their 14-year-old daughter Aarushi and

According to the CBI, the Talwars killed Aarushi in a fit of rage after finding her with Hemraj, who hailed from Nepal, in an “objectionable position”, suggesting the doublemurder could be case of honour killing. Aarushi was found on her bed with her throat slit on the morning of November 1, days before the birthday of the class nine student, at their residence in Noida, a Delhi suburb. Police initially blamed the missing domestic servant Hemraj — only to find his decomposing body on the roof 24 hours later with a similar cut and head wounds.

HUBANESWAR: With the very severe cyclonic storm Lehar moving towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, the Odisha government yesterday rushed disaster management personnel to ten districts to tackle flash floods in the event of heavy rain and took measures to protect standing crops. “According to IMD prediction, cyclone Lehar will not have much impact on the state. However, we have to remain prepared for the flash flood due to possible heavy rain in southern districts due to cyclone Lehar,” said Development Commissioner I. Srinivas after attending a review meeting by CM Naveen Patnaik. Srinivas said the Chief Minister has directed to rush personnel of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) to ten districts. The districts which could experience

heavy rainfall during land fall of cyclone Lehar are Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Balangir, Sonepur, Puri and Khurda. “Besides, the district collectors have also been asked to take steps to protect the standing crop in the field as they may be affected due to heavy rainfall,” the Development Commissioner said, adding that the state government was fully prepared to face the situation. Meanwhile, a bulletin issued by the IMD said that the very severe cyclonic storm Lehar over southeast Bay of Bengal moved westwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 1130 hours IST today over southeast Bay of Bengal near latitude 12.50 N and longitude 89.50 E, about 900 km Southeast of Gopalpur.

Modhwadia said that when call details (photocopies of telephone bills) of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley had been illegally accessed, the BJP did not allow Lok Sabha to function for three days. Delhi Police had nabbed the person who accessed Jaitley’s calls and his accomplices and put them behind bars. “But, in this case, the woman’s phone, her relatives’ phone calls and suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma’s phone conversations were tapped. Despite the serious allegation, no FIR has been lodged,” he said. Modi government on Monday night appointed a two-member Commission of Inquiry.

SRL sells Rs 912mn worth in Q2FY14 against Rs 910mn QoQ, in-line with our estimates. Collections at Rs 895mn vs. Rs 1050mn QoQ, continue to disappoint Launches Sunteck City 2, Goregaon in Q3FY14 with 0.8msf of SBA. Sold 4 percent for average realisations of ~Rs 13000/sf. Sunteck City 1 has unsold inventory 0.5msf (67 percent of SBA) Gross debt remains unchanged at Rs 5.1bn over FY13. On conservative basis, the cash inflows in H2FY14 should be more than enough to meet committed cash outflows. Maintain Buy rating with a target price (TP) of Rs 500. Unsold inventory from ongoing projects at Rs 53bn while cashflows from sold area at Rs 13bn is equal to o/s construction cost of Rs 13bn Sunteck Realty Ltd. (SRL) collections at Rs 895mn in Q2FY14 and Rs 1.9bn in H1FY14 have been disappointing. The same should get covered in H2FY14 as company launches new projects and also completes Signature Island, where outstanding collections from sold area stands at Rs 3bn. Also, as Sunteck City 1 crosses the plinth level in Q4FY14, the collections from the project will improve. We expect collections of Rs 3.4bn in H2FY14 against management’s expectations of Rs 4bn. SRL spent Rs 890mn towards construction and Rs 450mn towards advance taxes in H1FY14. Considering revenue booking of Signature Island in Q4FY14, the tax outflow would be higher in FY14. In H2FY14, construction cost outflow should be ~Rs 1.1bn with another Rs 1.30bn towards taxes and Rs 0.47bn towards payments of premium for land FSI to MMRDA. On our conservative expectations of Rs 3.4bn of collections, the total outflows of Rs 2.9bn would be more than met. SRL has pre-launched phase 2 of its Sunteck City at Goregaon West, Mumbai. The strategy to launch the phase 1, despite of 66 percent unsold inventory in phase 1, is to launch sub-Rs 10mn product of 1 ½ BHK. The company believes that due to lower affordability quotient in Mumbai housing market, the requirement of sub-Rs 10mn product is high. In a week’s time of its launch the project sells 0.03msf, 4 percent of its total SBA of 0.8msf for an average realisation of Rs 12900 / sf. SRL’s valuations remain attractive on the back of huge value of unsold inventory from the ongoing projects. Company’s key project, Signature Island, is expected completion in Q4FY14 which has unsold inventory of atleast Rs 15bn (59 percent of SBA). Sales run-rate of Signature Island is expected to pick up post completion considering it being the only super luxury ready-to-move-in product in Mumbai. As on Q2FY14, the o/s collections from sold area of the ongoing projects are equal to the o/s payments to complete the projects.

Morgan Stanley calls a ‘Buy’ on Axis Bank CMP: Rs. 1115 Target Rs. 1300

We have not had an OW on Axis since April 2011 – driven by concerns around infrastructure. It has reduced exposures to problem sectors over the last 1215 months, increasing confidence in book. It is still exposed to a weaker economy, but multiples factor in a fair degree of weakness. Upgrade to OW. Balance sheet at Axis is stronger now: The capital raising in 2013 lifted Tier 1 capital above 12%. A large part of the system (SOE banks) is weakly capitalized, so Axis can cherry-pick assets. Plus, it will be saved from raising equity if NPLs spike. The deposit base has continued to hold up well and PPoP margins have improved despite a move away from corporate loans. Exposure to stressed areas has decreased: In the past, Axis was viewed as a bank with primary focus on infrastructure, which will likely remain an area of stress for the system, in our view. However, over the last 18 months, it has reduced exposure to this area (in both absolute terms and relative to the total balance sheet). Coupled with a better balance sheet, this implies that the ability to withstand stress is very high. Focus has been on retail and SMEs: Our view on retail asset quality is that it remains fairly safe. SMEs are facing stress, but Axis is helped by the practice of lending (new loans) only to SMEs rated above SME 3. If the economy remains weak, this book will also see NPLs – but manageable, given its granular nature. Valuations are not onerous: FY14e P/E is 9.2x and P/B is 1.4x with 16% ROE in F15. Our increased PT reflects higher confidence in book, a lower bear case probability (declining risky exposure), and higher earnings owing to lower credit costs in FY15-18e. Top picks are HDFC Bank, HDFC, ICICI Bank and Axis. We have raised our target price 30%, to Rs1300 from Rs1000: Our valuation is based on a probability-weighted residual income model with three-phases – a five-year high-growth period and a 10-year maturity period, followed by a declining period. We continue to use a cost of equity of 14.7%, assuming a beta of 1.2, a risk-free rate of 8.25% (10-year government bond yield), and a market risk premium of 5.5%.

Sahara To Give Fresh Title Deeds For Assets Worth Rs 20,000 Cr By A Business Reporter

F

ighting a long-running battle with Sebi, the Sahara Group yesterday said it will submit new title deeds for properties worth Rs 20,000 crore to the market regulator, which had termed assets offered earlier as highly over-valued. The fresh proposal follows after the Supreme Court last week restrained Sahara group from selling any properties and restrained Subrata Roy and three other top executives from leaving the country without the court’s permission. The court will hear the matter next on December 11. While disagreeing with Sebi’s view that the properties offered earlier as security for Rs 20,000 crore were overvalued, the group said in a public notice published in various

newspapers today that it would “submit title deeds relating to other properties of Sahara aggregating Rs 20,000 crore, instead of debating any further on the issue raised. The group said it “has been making sincere efforts over the last few months to comply with the order of Supreme Court pertaining to the ongoing litigation with the Sebi and assured its depositors, customers and business associates that it will successfully “overcome these challenges. The Supreme Court has asked the group to hand over title deeds of unencumbered properties worth Rs 20,000 crore to Sebi, which was last year tasked with the job of refunding over Rs 24,000 crore to investors from whom two Sahara firms had raised money through issue of certain debentures.

Series win will lift morale ahead of SA tour: Bhuvneshwar

K

ANPUR: Unfavourable bowling conditions had pegged them back in the last match but India will look to assert their supremacy and clinch the series against the West Indies when the two teams clash in the decisive third One-day International, here today. India have been a dominant force in this contest since West Indies' arrival to the country but the hosts suffered a surprise twowicket defeat in Visakhapatnam, failing to defend a competitive total under difficult conditions. That victory must have boosted confidence of the West Indies who would now aim to leave the country by pocketing at least the ODI series, following their debacle in the Tests. They, for the first time on this tour, will approach a match with self belief and confidence. For India, it is last international match at home before they embark on a challenging tour against South Africa and they would like to finish this series on a high. The Indian batting line-up sports a solid look. Barring a few individuals, the batting department is in great form in the recent past. The top three -- Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni -- have been the real force behind India's batting. With scores of 86 and 99 in the two matches played so far, Kohli, in particular, has been in scintillating form. But it is the form of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina in the middle order which will be a cause of concern for Dhoni ahead of the series decider. Both Dhawan and Yuvraj have some work to do as they have been throwing their wickets away after getting starts. But Dhoni,

Indian team coach Duncan Fletcher and captain M S Dhoni discuss during the practice session ahead of their last ODI match against West Indies at Green Park stadium in Kanpur on Tuesday. who struck a quick-fire 51 in the last to propel India to 288, backed Yuvraj to strike form in the upcoming matches, terming the left-hander as vital cog in India's middle-order. "We want Yuvi to do well. He is someone who can bat well at No 4. Someone who can really dominate the oppositions. Last few games, he has struggled a bit. At times it happens when you're under pressure the 15-20 first deliveries become crucial," Dhoni had said after the second ODI.

‘Pak junior hockey team is not nervous about playing in India’

NEW DEL HI: Pakistani players had to return without playing a single match in Hockey India League early this year but their junior team is not 'nervous' about coming to India for the upcoming World Cup and is expecting good support from the fans during the tournament. Nine Pakistan players were sent back from the country in January due to simmering tension at the border. Pakistan coach Mazur ul Hassan hoped that since the two arch-rivals are not in the same pool, fans would apreciate their game in other matches. Pakistan are placed in pool A alongside Germany, Egypt and Belgium while India are in pool C with Canada, Korea and Netherlands for the December 6-15 event. "Our players are not nervous. It's an FIH tournament and everyone wants to focus on game only. On the basis of my experience of playing in India, I can say

that good Hockey will be encouraged. Our team can expect good support from the crowd as we are not in the same pool with India," Pakistan Junior Hockey coach Mazur ul Hassan told PTIBhasha from Lahore where the preparatory camp is being held. Hassan, a member of Pakistani team during the 1982 Asian Games, said playing in India will be a memorable experience for his team. "The beauty of hockey still lies in India and Pakistan. Artificial turf and new rules have ruined it partially but still you can admire the beauty of the game when India and Pakistan are playing. India has glorious past in hockey and produced legends. It will be a memorable experience for youngsters to play there," he said. Captain Mohammad Umer Bhutta said the players are excited about playing in India.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been doing a decent job with his slow left-armers, too would be desperate to return among runs. Barring the last match where dew played a major factor, the Indian bowlers have been pretty consistent in the series so far. Pace trio of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma leaked runs in Visakhapatnam. Dew did not help their cause as they struggled to grip the ball and handed out loose deliveries to the West Indies

KANPUR: Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar feels a win in the third and deciding ODI against West Indies here today will raise the morale of the team ahead of a tough tour to South Africa, starting next month. The third ODI at Kanpur holds great significance for both India and West Indies as the series is currently tied at 11 after the visitor's secured a close two-wicket win in the last game at Visakhapatnam. India had won the first match by six wickets at Kochi. "Tomorrow's match will be a crucial one. It is important in the context of the South Africa series. Our morale would be high going into South Africa tour if we can win the series," Bhuvneshwar said at the pre-match press conference at the Green Park Stadium, which is hosting an international game after nearly four years. batsmen. And come today, the trio would be hoping to make up in better conditions. The spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja, as usual, has been miser with the ball and the two bowlers would like to carry on their good show to help India clinch the series. Dhoni would also be hoping for an improved showing from fielders as they dropped as many as four catches in the last match. West Indies, on the other hand, did just enough to secure the win in the second match.

Win in Vizag gave us confidence: Dwayne

ANPUR: The series-levelling win in the second ODI at Visakhapatnam gave a struggling West Indies the self belief that they can beat India at their own backyard, the visiting team skipper Dwayne Bravo said here. After the six-wicket loss to India in the first ODI at Kochi, West Indies pulled off a narrow two-wicket victory against the hosts in the next match to liven up the three-match rubber. "Winning the last game gave us the confidence and the belief that we can actually beat India in

During the race, Keshavan clocked 51.640 seconds, 0.8 seconds behind the winner earning him a 27th place in the competition besides bagging 14 Nations Cup points. He also gained a valuable point for the Olympic qualification criteria taking his overall points to three and placing him at the 33rd position in the Olympic rankings. Shiva must remain in the top 40 to qualify for the Olympic games, which he is confident of achieving. "I hope to gradually move up the rankings as some of the experiments I am conducting with the equipment begin to pay off. In this race I covered up another three tenths of a second from the winner as compared to the last world cup," said Shiva from Innsbruck.

"From our point of view, we are just focused on improving on our previous performances and try to play together as a team more consistently. YDNEY: Spin great Shane Warne says a threat by Jimmy Anderson to punch debutant George Bailey sparked the furious reaction by Australian skipper Michael Clarke in the first Test against England. Clarke was fined 20 percent of his match fee on Monday after being caught by a stump microphone telling the fast bowler to expect a broken arm in the final stages of Australia's 381-run victory in Brisbane Sunday. The usually mild-mannered Clarke also wagged his finger in a close-up confrontation with the England quick, a renowned sledger, with the umpires needing to step in to cool tempers. As a member of the Nine Network's commentary team, Warne had access to all the stump microphone recordings and tweeted that Anderson had threatened Bailey, who was fielding in close, with a punch to the face. "I think it's a disgrace that @MClarke23 has been fined. What about what Jimmy Anderson said to Bailey, which wasn't heard," Warne posted on Twitter late Monday. "@MClarke23 stuck up for his

Unfortunately only Clarke's reaction to Anderson's was heard live, we all heard Anderson's sledge that led to Clarke reacting." He added, "Lastly as an international sportsman, if you decide to dish it out ie sledging you have

to be prepared to cop it back too & not complain." Bailey has remained tight-lipped on the Anderson incident, saying only that "he must have been just a bit upset about the way the game was going I guess". Channel Nine on Tuesday apologised that the Clarke comment was broadcast. Under an

agreement between Cricket Australia and the television network, the stump mike is not supposed to be on between balls so his threat should not have been recorded. "He is an outstanding Australian cricket captain who's just led his team to a marvellous and historic win," Nine's Head of Sport Steve Crawley told reporters. "He doesn't need or deserve that to be tarnished by our error and we of course apologise." The explosive incident capped a torrid first Ashes Test with England skipper Alastair Cook also fuming at David Warner calling his team frightened, while singling out batsman Jonathan Trott as "weak". Matters took a dramatic turn late Monday when Trott, a stalwart of the team, pulled out of the Ashes series and returned to England due to a "stress-related illness", widely reported to be depression. Prior to the news of Trott's departure, Warner admitted that he "probably went a little bit too far", although England coach Andy Flower said the batsman's departure was not directly related to the comments.

‘Pressure on Zaheer gearing up for South Africa tour me as I am M defending my title’ By A Sports Reporter

MUMBAI: Defending champion Harendra Gupta said that there will be enough pressure on him as he battles to hold his guard at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club in the Rs 1 crore prize money CG Open 2013 which will tee off today. Gupta and Rashid Khan will renew their rivalry after they were engaged in a playoff in which Gupta won the title last year. However, this season Khan seems to be on a roll as he leads the charts for the Order of Merit in the PGTI rankings. Speaking on the eve of the event, Harendra said, “There will be pressure on me as I am defending the title. All the golfers are in good form and I am just looking to give in my best,” said Harendra Gupta. Khan on the other hand said that he doesn’t want this tournament to end with him competing for the title through play offs. “I am not competing with anyone in this tournament. I have lost previous two tournaments in the playoffs. I want to win this tournament.” On being the leader in the PGTI Order of Merit he said that he was pleased with his performance this season as last he held this position only for week. “Last year, I held the Order of Merit for a week, so its good to see me hold it for longer this season,” said Khan. Also seen in action will be some of the PGTI’s seasoned pros like Ashok Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Shamim Khan, Digvijay Singh, Amandeep Johl, POm Prakash Chouhan and Manav Jaini during the CG Open.

UMBAI: Veteran India pacer Zaheer Khan, who has made a comeback to the Test side after nearly a year, today said he was gearing up for the challenge against South Africa next month. "I have ironed out things I felt were pulling me back. I am ready to take on the challenge. It is great to accept challenge and to live up to it," Zaheer told reporters here. The 35-year-old has been selected in the 17-member Test squad after taking 13 wickets in three Ranji Trophy matches at an average of 19.84 this season. His last Test was against England in Kolkata in December 2012. The senior pro said that inci-

M

dentally his last comeback was also in South Africa. "I have had some good memories of South Africa. My last comeback was there, so I am looking forward to it," he said. Zaheer will be leading the Mumbai team in its Ranji Trophy match against Vidarbha, which commences on November 28 and he said it would be good to get some match practice before the South Africa tour. "Looking forward to join the team (Indian). I will be playing this Ranji game (against Vidarbha). It is going to be good to get some overs under the belt," he said. The left-arm seamer, who had been battling fitness is-

sues, said he expected to make a comeback after working hard on the physical aspect. "I was expecting that. Last year when I sat down and was thinking about exactly how to go about, firstly if I want to make my comeback or no. That was the biggest question for me. When the answer was yes, I then chalked out a strategy. What exactly was needed and I did everything possible to make sure that I am there. Obviously, physical aspect was a big thing and I had to tackle that. "In consultation with lot of trainers and physios I chalked out a plan and so far it worked," he said.
