AFTER ARRESTING FOUR FOR FALSELY IMPLICATING A SOCIAL WORKER IN AN ARMS ACT CASE, POLICE ARE PROBING THE ROLE OF AN INSPECTOR FROM D.N. NAGAR POLICE STATION IN THE CONSPIRACY By Neel Shah
N
early two weeks ago, the Mumbai police had arrested four people for falsely implicating a social worker in an Arms Act case. Now, shockingly, the role of inspector Dilip Shinde, for conspiring with the arrested accused, is also being probed by investigators. According to the police, Shinde, presently attached to the D.N. Nagar police station, had conducted a search of the victim, Shakil Shaikh's house on the morning of January 29. During the search, Shinde found a country made pistol and two live magazines from inside Shaikh's house situated in Rachna CHS at Andheri (W). The latter was arrested and taken to the D.N. Nagar police station, where

Considering Shaikh's allegation against Shinde, DCP (Zone 9) Chhering Dorje, initiated an inquiry into the seizure of the weapon. Continued on pg 2 ÂŤ

Do you think BMC's decision to give `60 lakh more to corporators is justified? Saurabh Vaktania Journalist No. None of the corporators are using the funds for the development of his/her ward. Rizwan Ansari Businessman Yes. I feel it is in tune with the ever increasing population of Mumbai. The corporators should get extra funds, and I think it is a good decision.

This inquiry was conducted by police officials from the Bandra police station. Nearly two weeks after the inquiry, investigators have learnt that Shaikh was innocent, and that the arrested accused had orchestrated a plot with Shinde to falsely implicate the social worker. “The accused, identified as Sajjad Gheewala, Asgar Sayyed Majid, Akbar Rashid and Wahida Shaikh, were arrested on February 15,” confirmed Rajendra Chawan, senior inspector, D.N. Nagar police station. “All the four accused were arrested under the Arms Act and for criminal conspiracy,” said Chawan, adding, “I cannot comment regarding Shinde's role in the

Paslawar, who conducted the inquiry in the weapon seizure case, said, “The investigations in the case are still on, and the police is now trying to find out where the weapon was brought from. It would not be appropriate to comment about the role of a police officer in the case.” However, sources privy to the inquiry, said, “Except Wahida, all the three arrested accused were in constant touch with Shinde via phone. Right from the night of January 28 till the morning of January 29, when the seizure took place, there were several calls between the officer and the arrested accused.” DCP Dorje did not respond to calls or messages. neel.shah@afternoondc.in
Asgar Sayyed Majid, one among the four arrested accused, was the acting Block President of Andheri (W) from the Congress party. Majid is known to be a terror in Andheri, and if the sources in the crime branch are to be believed, he is in touch with fugitive gangster Fahim Machmach alias Fatwa. Majid's link with Machmach is through his friend, who is a singer in a posh hotel in Dubai. Commenting about Majid's involvement in the Arms Act case, MLA Baldev Khosa (District President, Mumbai North-West) said, “We are aware about Majid's arrest and the party will soon take disciplinary action against him.” Sajjad Gheewala, has a case of cheating registered against him in Nirmal Nagar police station, while Akbar Rashid has been booked in cases of assault and intimidation by the D.N. by students, the board extends the registration dates of HSC and SSC exams. The registration dates are usually declared from NovemberDecember and are extended till a week or two before the exams begin. As the board accepts registrations at the last moment, there is not much time left to process the data of the students and then forward the pre-list to the schools. The last minute hurry to process the hall tickets causes errors and it takes a long time to get the correction done from the board office. A senior official from the state board, on condition of anonymity said: “Most of the schools finish the registration process in time which makes it easy for the board to generate the hall tickets to stu-
dents. The schools or students who register for the exams at the last minute delay the processing and despatch of hall tickets. The board has granted power to school principals to correct mistakes and accordingly intimate the board.” When the ADC asked the reasons for extension of the dates, the official added, “Politicians jump into the matter stating that the dates should be extended and even the state government has given us a direction stating that all those who are eligible for the exams should be registered if they want to appear for the exams.” Speaking to the ADC, Sudhir Dani, an education activist said: “The board can entrust some of the work to schools. At present, all the work of both SSC and HSC examinations is executed by the board office. They can share some of the work with schools to ease the pressure”.

MU: THE DOWNFALL WHERE IS MUMBAI UNIVERSITY HEADED? SPECIAL REPORT
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2014
As this once-proud institution enters its 157th year, its glory has been marred with goof-ups and mismanagement surfacing every other day at the varsity. Yatin Ingle highlights some of them here

W
hile the Rajabai Tower is being renovated after 135 years, the core of the university – imparting education – is beginning to rust with errors and confusion. The Mumbai University (then University of Bombay) established by the British way back in 1857, ranked among the top universities in India, has lately been engulfed in a variety of issues with regard to its teachers, students, infrastructure, examinations and more. This has been the case for about four years now. To begin with, the appointment of Dr. Rajan Welukar as the ViceChancellor of the university in 2010 was surrounded by controversies.
Immediately after this declaration, a petition against Dr. Welukar was filed by candidates contesting for the post. The petition stated that Welukar was ineligible for the post and that his appointment was inappropriate. Within a few months of this appointment, the varsity received another blow in March 2011. Some question papers of the Commerce and Engineering streams were leaked, leading to re-examinations. In an Academic Council Meeting held in December 2012, the varsity
declared a new marking scheme. Called the Credit Based Grading Scheme (CBGS), this scheme modified the marking system of various subjects. The pattern of 50 – 50 weightage to internals and external exams was changed to 40 for internals and 60 for external exams. This new rule soon invited protests from professors who believed that this would increase their work load. Even before this storm had settled, the ADC in January 2012 revelead that the exam controller of the varsity was ineligible for the post
and was thus dismissed. Four other exam controllers too resigned within the same year. None of the them had completed a tenure of five years. The post is now vacant. As if all these lapses weren't enough, the varsity's infrastructure too began to show short-falls. The sports complex established by former VC Dr. Vijay Khole awaited renovation for years. However, reconstrcution and furnishing began soon after the ADC flashed a story in this regard. While some of the departments of
the university lack an eligible Head of Department, the Physical Education department is also devoid of basic facilities required for the smooth functioning of the courses. The University thus has quite justifiably failed to appear in the list of top 200 universities in the world according to the latest international survey of Universities across the world. Ironically, in the last year, Mumbai University has actually been listed at number five in the list of top 100 universities in India by India Today magazine. It
Here are some major goof-ups by the varsity since 2010 (published in the ADC): No control! (January 10, 2012) During the Management Council Meet (MC) held at the Fort Campus of the varsity, it was found that the Exam Controller of MU, Vilas Shinde, is ineligible for his post, according to documents produced by Shinde on demand by the MC He was appointed to this post by the Scrutiny Committee which cleared Shinde’s documents.
MU uploads ‘ghost’ list of guides for Ph.D (March 29, 2012) More than two years have elapsed since Mumbai University last carried out its Ph.D Entrance Tests (PET). It has now announced the next exam and published a list of guides to mentor the selected candidates. And this 175-page list, uploaded on the official website www.mu.ac.in in a pdf format is mostly blank.
MU paper leak plugged (June 6, 2012) The Cyber Cell of Mumbai police arrests duo responsible for the scam. On Tuesday, besieged officials of the Mumbai University (MU) were a relieved lot after the Cyber Cell of the Mumbai Police traced the links and IP addresses from where the scanned copies of the question paper were leaked, trapping 14 accused for the hi-tech scam. Hostel or Home for the Aged? (October 2, 2012)
Students residing in hostels of Mumbai University find loopholes to retain their rooms and overstay. Every year, around 2,000 students from various cities across the country come to the city to pursue degrees from the Mumbai University. Most of them reside in the varsity's hostels for a given time period and are required to vacate the premises after completion of terms. But it is noticed that students are taking up double courses, one after the other without completing one, just to retain their seats and stay back in the hostels, while a few are residing there even after the expiry of their term.
GO write, we won’t correct (March 30, 2013) The ongoing teachers’ strike may delay TY B.Com results. While Mumbai University has gone ahead with their examinations despite the teachers’ strike, students are likely to have their results delayed as the striking teachers will not correct answer sheets.
WHERE TO PLAY? (August 28, 2013) Varsity ignores maintenance of sports complex, leaving students with no place to play. Even as it is preparing for its annual sports meet, the Mumbai University seems to have conveniently forgotten or ignored maintenance of its sports facilities set up for students. The water in the swimming pool has turned stagnant and is infested with larvae, while the bushes surrounding the pool are overgrown. The tennis court has
is also perceived as one of the better universities in other well-regarded ratings. Yet the repeated tales of sheer mismanagement, short-sightedness and a bewildering lack of concern for the consequences of such actions has taken its toll. MU has now introduced around 25 new job-related courses in its curriculum. Also, Nano Technology and collaborations with foreign universities do mark as positives in the MU's reportcard but there are miles to go before we sleep.
turned into a muddy lawn and the table tennis area is being used as a storage yard. MU fails ‘Physical Test’! (September 3, 2013) MU’s Physical Department runs without the facilities mentioned in its syllabus but goes ahead awarding diplomas and masters degrees in Physical Education. While students may be happy to receive their degrees for Masters in Physical Education (M.Ped), the varsity has failed the test in providing facilities. After the ADC investigated about this, it was found that the department has been awarding degrees without having complete facilities needed for the course. Out of 37 facilities, the department only had six in place, while 33 others are either not available or are available on a temporary basis.
From TYBAF to SYJC (November 20, 2013) Students of Saket College will now be considered only 10+2 passed, as their college has no permission to conduct BAF courses. The situation worsened for the 31 students of Saket College, Kalyan who are not allowed by the MU to appear for their fifth semester exams, as their first year and second year have been labeled as ineligible by the varsity. These students’ qualification is now considered equivalent to that of a 10+2 passed student and will have to take admission to first year of graduation in June.

Two Navy officers who were missing after a fire accident on board INS Sindhuratna on Thursday morning, have been confirmed dead after examination by the Navy's medical officers. Officials confirmed that the rest of the crew on the ship is safe while a few are “stable but critical”. The two officers were identifed as Lt. Commander Kapish Munwal and Lt. Manoranjan Kumar. In the wake of this event, the office of the Defence Minister cancelled the inauguration of the Shore Based Test Facility (SBTF) at INS Hansa, Goa which was scheduled for March 1. SBTF is created to simulate aircraft carrier environment on land for flight testing and crew training of the carrier borne air craft
– MiG-29 and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Navy version. The Navy was successful in bringing the submarine to the shore on Thursday and berthed it at an isolated place in the harbour. An inspection team has been visiting the vessel ever since to examine the extent of damage caused by the fire.
INS SINDHURATNA MISHAP According to officials, the fire broke out in the third compartment of the submarine. One of the two officers witnessed the fire and raised an alarm. Officials of the Navy said, “It (fire fighting) was a very hazardous task, but they managed and the vessel suffered a relatively lesser damage”. Two theories having been doing
the rounds regarding the death of the two officers. One, while fighting the fire, the two inhaled hazardous gases and fell unconscious. Two, while the two were fighting the fire, authorities of the vessel decided, under “dangerous circumstances” to seal the hatches of compartment three and four, leaving the officers inside. The decision was reportedly taken in the best interest of the rest of the crew, a good 92 of them, and safety of the vessel. A high-level inquiry has been appointed in the case presided by a Rear Admiral rank officer along with several other departments to assist him. This committee will have the power to superceed the previous committee which was examining the INS Sindhurakshak accident.

Constable molests woman inside moving bus; victim’s husband, co-passengers get accused arrested By Zuber Ansari
L
ess than a week after Mumbai's new police commissioner Rakesh Maria, spoke to the media about the importance of women’s safety, a constable has been arrested by the Vile Parle police for molesting a woman who was travelling with her husband, in a Volvo bus. The accused – identified as constable Sachin Sakharam Waghchore (26) – and the couple were returning to Mumbai from Shirdi. Waghchore is part of the 2011 batch of the Mumbai police and was attached to the Local Arms Unit of Mumbai police at Worli. According to the police, on Wednesday evening, the victim, her husband, and Waghchore boarded a private luxury bus from Shirdi temple where they had gone for a visit. Waghchore was sitting right behind the victim. According to the woman, Waghchore – from the beginning of the journey – was behaving suspicious and had tried to touch her a few times. While the bus was passing through Vile Parle on the Western Express Highway, Waghchore leaned forward and allegedly touched the woman inappropriately. The woman immediately alerted her husband and co-passengers who started

Ponder awhile… “A government, for protecting business only, is but a carcass, and soon falls by its own corruption and decay.” – Amos Bronson Alcott
Anti-graft ordinance: It will only make matters worse for Congress A
FTER failing to get the anti-corruption bill passed in Parliament, the Congress party wants now to issue an ordinance providing for anti-corruption exercises. This is being done just two months before the elections. Vice President of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi, want to show to the people that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not interested in taking up anti-corruption measures but the Congress party will make all possible efforts to fight corruption by passing the ordinance. It is quite pathetic that Rahul is unable to see that people can easily see through the game. It is a pity that Rahul wants to claim that the Congress is keen about eradicating corruption and that it will go all out to proclaim the ordinance. He appears to believe that 10 years of corrupt rule can be forgotten by the people. Scam after scam has erupted during the UPA rule. The whole country knows about this. Rahul has not uttered a word about the corruption that was surfacing during the Congress rule. He seems to think he can still remove the corruption taint that has stuck thick to his party. It is ridiculous that he should talk about removing all corrupt practices across the country and at all levels of administration in the next two months. The last-minute course correction that he is attempting will not help him change the mind of people. It looks like the Congress took things easily and went on resorting to corrupt deals and transactions. The prime minister himself was involved in cause of corruption. He shielded corrupt ministers and extended help to many to bring off lucrative deeds. There is concrete proof to prove all this. The PM's explanation that he had to take some tough steps has been hardly convincing. He said he had to take into consideration the 'coalition compulsions'. It is a fact if he had not taken some of these steps the UPA would have not been able to muster majority in the House. The BJP is watching Rahul Gandhi's effort to bring in ordinances regarding anti-corruption moves. It knows that such attempts will only make matters worse.

O
NE would imagine that the Indian Readership Survey commissioned by the Media Research Users Council (MRUC), a registered not-for-profit body of members drawn from major advertisers, advertising agencies and media owners, is completely above board. According to the MRUC website, the IRS maintains “standards of integrity, fairness and reliability in media research” but overnight, as it were, its most recent findings seem to have enraged the media to the point of disowning it. As things stand, the IRS is the only currency of readership that exists and hence all advertisers and advertising agencies rely on the data to make informed choices with their media investments. The business attracts as much as Rs. 15,000 crore which is no small amount. Now as many as 18 publications – including The Times of India, The Hindu, Tribune, The Statesman, Mid-Day, Outlook among English language media, and among Indian language media, such big shots as Dainik Jagran, Lokmat, Nai Duniya, Amar Ujala, Malayala Manorama and Dinakaran have contested the IRS findings. And what are these findings? One is that there has been a decline in the readership of many newspapers. Some of the anomalies pointed out in the report are as follows: The Maharashtra market has seen a gross decline in readership with the leading Marathi dailies seeing a loss of 15 lakh readers, which is hard to believe. In Gujarat the Number One daily has been dethroned by the Number Three, and in the process, there has been a loss of 7 lakh readers. In Karnataka, apparently, all leading Kannada dailies have dropped significantly by as much as 40 to 50 per cent! The Andhra Pradesh market, too, has seen an overall drop in newspaper readership across languages with as much as 45 to 50 per cent decline. It sounds almost unbelievable.
Television over newspapers One point has not been made clear, though. Is there any relationship between ‘circulation’ and ‘readership’? The former means the number of copies actually sold. The latter is the number of people who may be reading one single copy. This means that the circulation may be steady and may even have increased, but because of the increase in the number of nuclear households, the readership has come down. In one family, say, there may be one husband, one wife and one

But that has obviously not helped. It is a well-known fact that because of the rising number of Hindus now being settled in the USA as permanent citizens, not only have many temples – some beautifully designed – sprung up, but there is a growing demand for purohits. One wonders what the US government has to say about this new development. Ten Sikh gurus and religious authority T
HE term guru comes from the Sanskrit guru, meaning teacher, guide, or mentor. The traditions and philosophy of Sikhism were established by ten specific gurus from 1469 to 1708. Each guru added to and reinforced the message taught by the previous, resulting in the creation of the Sikh religion. Guru Nanak was the first guru and appointed a disciple as successor. Guru Gobind Singh was the final guru in human form. Before his death, Guru Gobind Singh decreed that the Guru Granth Sahib would be the final and perpetual guru of the Sikhs. Guru Angad succeeded Guru Nanak. Later, an important phase in the development of Sikhism came with the third successor, Guru Amar Das. Guru Nanak's teachings emphasised the pursuit of salvation; Guru Amar Das began build-

Disparities abound FOR everything there is a limit and the UPA government disappointed people on all fronts: the Rajiv Gandhi case is pulling on for 16 years and the panel is still probing it. There is no end to the problem even in handling terrorists and killers of national leaders. As we take our own time even in deciding death penalty to Rajiv killers, the Supreme Court passed a judgement changing the verdict to life time imprisonment from death penalty. The President is taking his time and hence the SC did a good thing by passing a landmark judgement. A forty-member superfluous panel monitoring Rajiv killing has spent over Rs.100 crore and the CBI is yet clueless about the team's purpose in holding office
Silly behaviour AS in the past, our cricketers behave in a very arrogant way and these cricketers are punished time and again as per the ICC Code of Conduct. Sourav Ganguly was punished nearly a dozen times but still he was misbehaving in the field of play. Again Harbhajan Singh did receive warnings, punishment and ban of one full IPL season and he still indulges in tantrums in the field of play. Gautam Gambhir behaved in a childish way by using his arm to push the opposition team member. More recently we saw Virat Kohli going overboard and making a mockery of the game several times.
for such a long time without finding anything to probe in the said case. Thus the very purpose of forming the panel is defeated and people overruling the government or SC are condemned for the inaction of the governing body in such matter. Too much time is wasted already and unless some concrete steps are taken, the money spent on this objective proves futile. There is a different yardstick for different people. Sanjay Dutt is getting parole every now and then whereas Rajiv killers are not getting any favourable verdict even after spending 22 years in jail. What a disparity! — Subbu Jayant, Kharghar
In such a scenario, the kind of leaders that we could look up to could be of the caliber of Ratan Tata, Narayan Murthy, Deepak Parikh, Anand Mahindra and such giants who are so wealthy already that they would not be interested primarily in the accumulation of further lucre. They could be charged with setting up the country just as if they were starting a multinational organisation and inducting timetested honest people to take things forward in accordance with laws that have been revitalised and made relevant to our times. They would ensure that religion becomes a private matter to be practiced in one's home. They would fight and eradi-

The Indian Cricket Team has lately been underperforming consistently on foreign soil, disappointing the lakhs of fans the game has in India. Now Kohli is made captain in the absence of M.S. Dhoni. RBI ON THE PROWL
I CAN visualise the scene easily. Come April 1 and there would be serpentine queues at the cash counters of bank branches. The cashiers would have to look with magnifying glasses at each note surrendered given the fact that the year is printed in the smallest font possible. More aggrieved by the move would be the common folks especially senior citizens whose eyesight is not so good. This is likely to unlock a vast amount of liquidity as people chose to rid themselves of old notes, whether accountable money or not. This, in addition to the money injected into the economy on account of the general elections (estimated at two per cent of the GDP) will lead to a massive short and medium term inflation. Likely consequences are a spike in the price of gold, large imports and smuggling of gold, panic purchases of dollars and other forms of liquid assets. The rich dirty will rejoice as they see their existing assets inflate artificially. The poor will

Tawde won’t contest MLC polls on March 20 By A Staff Reporter
S
tate Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Bhaskar Jadhav yesterday, announced the names of three candidates for the biennial elections to the nine legislative council seats for which polls are due on March 20. The NCP has given nominations to sitting MLCs Hemant Takle, Kiran Pawaskar and Anand Thakur. Expectedly enough, sitting BJP MLC and leader of opposition in legislative council, Vinod Tawde has opted out of the election fray, having announced his intentions to contest the 2014 Assembly elections. Sources disclosed that the party is likely to nominate former MLC Pasha Patel in his place. Both the NCP and the BJP have not as yet indicated who else will be fielded for the MLC polls. The NCP has four retiring members in the upper house, out of which it has nominated two sitting MLCs and given a ticket to a fresh face in the form of Anand Thakur. The party has
not yet specified if it will field sitting MLC Ranajagjitsinha Padmasinha Patil, or nominate someone else. BJP sources have revealed that the party's second sitting MLC, Pandurang Phundkar, too, is being considered for the Lok Sabha elections. The other name under consideration is that of former MLC Sanjay Kelkar, in place of Phundkar. Sources disclosed that the Congress is more or less certain that it will re-nominate sitting MLC and Council chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh. However, the party is yet to decide upon renominating its other sitting MLC Jaiprakash Chajjed. The Shiv Sena is also likely to renominate its sitting MLC Dr. Neelam Gorhe. The Shiv Sena has decided to field second candidate – Rahul Narvekar. This could spell trouble for the NCP which might struggle to garner additional votes to ensure victory for its fourth candidate. The term of nine elected MLCs is to end on April 24.

>> Chef’s may whip up delicious dishes on a daily basis, but they’ve got favourites too! Read about what dishes they love from restaurants around the city
Guilty Pleasures Prawns in butter-garlic sauce at Mahesh Lunch Home or a juicy steak at Salt Water Café – everyone has that one dish they can’t resist. The 48hrs Team spoke to chefs across the city to bring you the guilty pleasures they love to indulge in at restaurants across Mumbai Doughnut Ice-Cream Burger
W
e all have one dish that we consider an indulgence and travel to the ends of the city to devour. Turns out, chefs are no different. As much as they enjoy whipping up culinary delights in their own kitchens, they also love tucking into food that's been perfected by other chefs. Take a look at what dishes these chefs love to dig into:
Think of a burger that contains mocha ice-cream, chocolate sauce and castor sugar. According to chef Mitesh from Lemon Grass, this is his idea of the perfect dessert. “My guilty pleasure has to be the Doughnut Ice-Cream Burger at Indigo Deli. An innovation that was too delectable not to order, this dessert can be eaten as an entire meal if not shared,” he explains.
Lemon Mountain Cake Co-owner and chef of The Little Door, Tanu Narang Moghe tells us that she loves lemon. It's the one thing she can't resist indulging in, especially desserts. She says, “One guilty pleasure that I can't resist indulging in is the Lemon Mountain Cake at Theobroma. Every bite of this cake is so refreshing. The lemon curd topping and moist crumb are to die for.”
Beef Steak “If I had to name one thing, it is the beef steak at Pot Pourri. The meat is cooked as per your choice and is always consistent, so it always tastes the same,” says Soy Street’s chef
Raunak. He is wary of eating beef outside, but this is one restaurant where he makes an exception. “This restaurant serves it medium-rare, just the way I like it and is an entire meal in itself,” he adds.
Sol Kadi & Prawns Kohliwada “My guilty pleasure? The Sol Kadi and Prawns Kohliwada at Jai Hind Lunch Home,” says chef Mangesh from The Big Bang Bar & Café. He explains that he loves this dish because their batter mixture of besan with chilli and ajwain is mouthwatering, making the outer covering crunchy, whereas the meat is tenderly cooked, making it a perfect home-style appetiser. He adds, “The Sol Kadi has the perfect tanginess, and can be consumed on its own as a drink or even with rice.” continued on pg 14 «

A simple thali For Chef Vinod from Aoi, the thali at Makhan is something he just cannot resist. Maybe it's the fact that it came highly recommended from a Marawari friend of his from Kalbadevi, but he's glad he tried it, even though he isn't particularly fond of a thali. “I decided to take my family there and fell in love with the simplicity. The meal is light, not too heavy on the pocket or the palate, and fuses authentic Rajasthani flavours for those of us who are starved for different and original North Indian cuisine not restricted to Punjabi/ Mughlai,” he adds.

>> Chef Nirmal Monteiro loves the Double Decker burger from Elbo Room
Unlimited Wok “I love the Unlimited Wok at All Stir Fry. The fact that it's unlimited makes it the ultimate guilty pleasure and it has a variety of sauces to choose from,” says Zubin D'Souza, executive chef from Waterstones Bar + Grill. He explains that he loves it more because there's no shortage in the choice of meat, prawns and beef and you can refill it as often as you like.”
Gosht Dum Biryani Have you ever had the Gosht Dum Biryani at Saffron at JW Marriott? If what chef and owner of Palate Culinary Studio, Rakhee Vaswani says is to be taken seriously, we're going to try it as soon as possible! She tells us, “A guilty pleasure for me is pure indulgence in the Gosht Dum Biryani at Saffron in JW Marriott. After a long day in the kitchen teaching, I need comfort food and nothing comes close to a mouthwatering biryani. Indulgence to me is like polishing off an entire pot — it's like blood to Dracula — I just can't stop eating it!”
fare at Umame. “I can go on listing their delicacies but the one I love the most is the Korean Dolsot Bibimbap, served in a sizzling hot stone bowl. When the dish is brought to your table, you can feast your eyes on the raw egg being cooked against the walls of the hot stone bowl, colourful and carefully laid vegetables that nestle the flavourful shreds of beef in the centre, on a bed of sesame oil infused sticky rice with dollops of Gochujang Sauce. I also love the Sushi Boat where you can savour a variety of sushi presented on a boat-shaped platter. The choice of sushis served complement each other and bring the whole platter together wonderfully.”
Prawns Cheung Fun Head to Yauatcha and order the Prawns Cheung Fun if you want to eat like Krishna, corporate chef from Otto Infinito. He tells us, “I love eating the Prawns Cheung Fun at Yauatcha. They're delicious, with crispy wrapped fried prawns that are served with warm soya sauce.”
>> The Roasted Mango Duck from Hakkassan comes highly recommended by Chef Guan Yew Tham
Paani Puri Kshama Prabhu, executive chef at The White Owl has a guilty pleasure we're sure will be shared by many. She loves paani puri. The place she loves savouring this street food delight is Gypsy in Shivaji Park, Dadar. She further adds, “I also love the Sukh Sagar Pav Bhaji.” The restaurant, located at Chowpatty, is known for this dish among others, and it's on our list of guilty pleasures too!
Crispy Jalebis with Rabri While most chefs we spoke to were all about savoury, Chef Himanshu, from Masala Library, hits the sweet spot, literally. For him, it is a plate of crispy jalebis with rabri that he can't say no to. He tells that Made in Punjab is where he loves enjoying this crispy, juicy, sweet delight.
Double Decker Burger Nothing whets our appetite like a juicy burger and it seems Nirmal Monteiro, corporate executive head chef at Saffron Bay has found the perfect one. He tells us, “I absolutely love the Double Decker Burger from The Elbo Room. The beef patties are stuffed with cheddar cheese and crispy bacon and if that wasn't delicious enough, it's served with homemade potato wedges and a delicious side salad.”
Bheja Fry & Mutton Bhuna For Chef Glyston Gracias, Chef Manager at Smoke House Deli, nothing beats the Bheja Fry and Mutton Bhuna at Bade Miyan. He says, “The Mutton Bhuna and Bheja Fry are cooked the good old fashion way and are delicious. I have been visiting Bade Miyan for years and the dishes taste just as good every single time.”
Fried Bombay Duck Chef Gresham Fernandes, group executive chef, Impresario Entertainment & Hospitality, loves a dish that can only be found here and frankly, is on our list of guilty pleasures too. He says, “The fried Bombay Duck at Jai Hind is my guilty pleasure. It's always so fresh and the spicing is just perfect.” Crisp, crunchy and delicious... what's not to like?!
Korean Dolsot Arzaan Sabawalla, head chef at Amadeus says he absolutely loves the
Roasted Mango Duck & Lobster Noodles If you're a seafood fan and want to indulge in some Chinese then Guan Yew Tham, the head chef at Yauatcha, has some great recommendations for you. He tells us, “My guilty pleasures are the Roasted Mango Duck, Lobster Noodles and Steamed Crab. I love eating these dishes at Hakkassan.”
Beef Steak For Mozanne Karbhari, kitchen executive, pastry kitchen, ITC Grand Central, Indigo Deli's steak is always brilliant. “The steak over there is simply out of this world. It is always cooked to perfection just the way I like it — medium. It just melts in your mouth and pairs excellently with the candied garlic and mashed potatoes,” she says.
Cajun Spiced Chicken Burger Shezad Marolia, kitchen manager at VongWong Restaurant and Dragonfly Banquet, loves a few dishes at an old Mumbai haunt — Sundance Cafe. “I love their steaks and burgers. Their Cajun Spiced Chicken Burgers are the best home-style burgers I've tried and their BBQ chicken wings are really good too.”

A
one-of-a-kind adventure race is coming to the city next weekend, called Broke in Bandra. Bandra is often known as the culture hub of the city, but there's also wit and a lot of shameless behaviour. If you think you're a pro at being able to experience Bandra without spending too much money, Broke in Bandra is what you've been looking for. The hunt and adventure race will see you scouring the area, solving clues and performing tasks from one location to the other. The twist? You'll have three hours and only `100. Manjari Verma, co-founder of Broken Compass, the company that's organising the event, tells us, “People in Mumbai love to experiment, explore and engage in things that are unique, unheard of and something that definitely tingles their taste buds. The idea of having a treasure hunt is to engage people in an exciting activity and creatively make them discover the unknown about the city they live in.” You will have a three-member strong team and with them, you'll be out in the sweltering Bombay heat, with no money and a lot of tasks to complete. You will also be devoid of resources, such as your phone. If you're over 18, have two friends who want to join you and think you can win, register now as it's on a first-come-firstserve basis! oday evening, Studio Balance is organising a free Capoeira session for children. Capoeira is a form of Brazilian Martial Arts which was invented by African slaves working in the forests and mines of Brazil. The interesting part of this martial art is that it is the only one that is performed to music. It originated from the dance that the slaves used to perform for entertainment after a hard day's work. This dance then evolved into a form of martial art that we know as Capoeria. Macaco, a Capoeria instructor who has trained for years will be conducting the session. He tells us, “Capoeira for children is a fantastic opportunity for them to be exposed to Brazilian culture and learn this unique blend of martial arts, music and dance. It is a fun aerobic activity for children that improves flexibility while developing core muscles, strength and motor skills. All this while playing! Made famous by the African slaves in Brazil, Capoeira is known for its quick moves, spins, kicks involving power and speed. It is the only form of martial arts performed to music.” Entry for the session is free, but you'll need to call them up and register. >> Ardeuir has a lot of readyto-wear and resort wear pieces that have Greek and Roman influences
New fashion label and resort wear line Ardeuir is full of striking pieces, but do they translate into wearable fashion? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more
I
f you were wondering what Ardeuir meant, it means passion in French. So, you're not going to be surprised when you see the sultry shots in the look book of the newly launched label, with a variety of resort and ready-to-wear items that seem haute couture to say the least. Look through further and you'll see the prices. Started by 25-year-old Chanpreet Mansukhani, the brand is a product of her training in art and illustration since the age of 15 and further training under wedding designers Anjali and Arjun Kapoor. It's accurate that the name is derived from French because looking through the collection it's quite obvious that Ardeuir craves to be the clothing du jour. But, you can also see the Greek and Roman influences in the fluid lines and effortless silhouettes. The first thing that strikes you when you look through the collection is that it's incredibly bold and colourful. Ardeuir is not shy about colour or design, with royal blues, deep reds, sunshine yellows, bold greens and oranges. There are no flirty pastels, no skirmish browns or dull greys. Everything in the collection screams for attention – and gets it.
Although I'm not sure how easy it would be to wear the sweeping gowns anywhere but to designer events or high-fashion shindig, a lot of the dresses and jumpsuits are striking, though they are blended in with a few run-off-the-mill designs that hardly seem worthy of their extravagant price tags. Design-wise, the collection catches your eye. The pieces stand out vividly and include jumpsuits, knee-length dresses, pretty palazzo pants, gowns, drape dresses and a few skirts. The tops (that cost the likes of `6,500 for a simple white top) don't seem worth it, even with a designer tag attached. A royal blue jumpsuit that caught my eye more than once cost `10,500, while the knee-length bow dress would set you back `8,000. Palazzo pants will set you back `7,500 while a little black dress costs `8,500. The collection ranges from `5,000 — `14,000 with the tops being the cheapest and the jumpsuits being the most expensive, except for a blue twist dress that cost `14,00. It's well priced for designer wear but will still set you back a pretty penny. Material includes georgettes, silk and a sprinkling of jersey. We previewed the spring/ summer and ready-to-wear collections, but

Prashant Shetty had the surname, but little else to start him on his journey as a restauranteur. It's a good thing he did not sweat the small stuff and just trusted his instincts! The ADC meets him to see whether the confidence was misplaced
W
e are going to tell you how to get to Seven Sevens. Not because we don't trust your sense of direction. If we don't, you might miss it or dismiss it as a jumped up Udupi. So, from Sion Hospital, come straight towards Jain Society and take a left at Dominos. Then keep going, cross a road within Jain Society, till you can see a corner restaurant with a deep red signboard and very cheerful interiors, on your left. It's not a big place, with eight tables downstairs and a mezzanine that seats 12 in slightly cramped conditions. Downstairs, there is a large influx of ladies who want to have a last-minute kitty lunch. Prashant Shetty, less than a year ago employed with TCS, is on hand to welcome them. They sit with the confidence of a group that has been there, done that before. So what's the story, we asked Shetty, in his early 30s, still a bit dazed, we think, at his success. It used to be a regular Udupi that was in the family for 50 years, run by his grandfather. On his passing, the restaurant was taken over by his father and his uncle. “I always wanted to be a restauranteur and I finally took the plunge. The family did not approve but I did it anyway, giving up a secure job, taking a bank loan for renovations and paying EMIs,” he says. First he decided what kind of place he wanted to run in an area inhabited largely by Gujaratis who like it all. “I thought what could I give them that is different? I knew the new generation liked westernised cooking, so I decided to go fusion and started looking for chefs. Last April when we opened, there was a staff of seven. Today we have 20 people.” If numbers are an indication, then Prashant, a

believer in numerology, is on to a good thing — he loves sevens in particular, hence the name. But those tell only part of the story, the rest is about three months of fine tuning the menu ‘about 100 times’ and testing out everything till he felt it was really good. Then he opened and watched the place fill up. He has been getting several takeaway orders as well, and one that amuses him most is from a Dadar resident who said, “We're opposite this pizza place”. Mocktails included a Pina Colada, frothy, with pineapple and coconut cream, Sparkling Mint with lemon and pineapple juice and Coco Banana, with pineapple, bananas, coconut and vanilla ice-cream, all priced at `150. The Seven Sevens special is a musttry, with mango juice, ice-cream and syrup, at `160. The starters (`100 - `130), include Jacket Potatoes, Cheese Cornballs (a hot favourite), Hummus with Pita & Salad, Bruschetta, Tacos and Wedges. The Pasta Salad (`135) is a mix of oregano, black olives, chilli flakes and black pepper. Daddy's House Salad has cherry tomatoes and iceberg lettuce. For the mains, besides lasagnas, pastas and bakes, there is a 12-inch specialty pizza (`390) prodigal with paneer, paprika and sauces. Try the Veg. Singapore, golden, tangy and spicy (`155), the Bamboo or pot rice (`210) and the Thread Paneer (`190, popular but not on the menu), cottage cheese dipped in a hot and sour sauce, wrapped in thread and cooked til it’s crisp outside and mushy on the inside. Of course, it is all vegetarian. There is only so far you can push the average Gujarati! But if the proof of the pudding is in the eating, Prashant has little left to prove!
If you didn't understand that, you need to brush up on your French before you head over to newly opened La Folie at Kala Ghoda. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more
f you're still pondering over the title, it means French cake. Don't worry, that's not all La Folie has to offer. Bringing Parisian sparkle to Bombay, Sanjana Patel's new patisserie is home to treats she’s perfected, while adding a good dose of French to her vocabulary, as you can see from the menu that’s replete with French terms and phrases that only two types of people will be able to decipher — those familiar with French terms and those familiar with patisserie terms. For the rest, there are friendly staff ready to take you through the menu, so don't despair. The first thing you'll notice about La Folie is that it's tiny. However, the best things come in the littlest packages. Whether it was the impressive photos lining the walls, the sparsely filled dessert trays that suggested exclusivity or the pretty boxes, there was something about the shop that had me entranced. It's not down-to-earth, but I doubt that's what they were aiming for. In fact, the stripped down logo, the sparse décor — it's all a well-executed plan to make sure there's nothing that stands out more than the pastries. They use imported ingredients that make a big difference in taste. Sanjana studied under greats such as JeanCharles Rochoux and the inimitable macaron king, Pierre Herme, so I wanted to sample the pretty, colourful and uniquely flavoured macarons more than ever. Macarons are expensive here (`75), but one bite of the lemongrass and basil one and you won't be thinking about money. Delicately flavoured, the lemongrass complemented the basil instead of contrasting starkly against it. The matcha tea macaron needed less sugar and a little more matcha and the paan and rose gulkand macaron was just so-so. If you're vegetarian, try the eggless Infinite Caramel, a pastry that contains delicately flavoured, silky soft caramel cream and a delicious nougat-like base. The Candy Cake is inspired by childhood sweets, so when you bite into it, you're going to have Melody and Eclair toffee flashbacks before you get to the minty fresh Mentos-like marshmallow and chocolate biscuit base. It seemed like it contained too many flavours (seven!) for it to taste good, but surprise, surprise — like everything else at La Folie, it was so well-balanced that the unlikely flavours actually fused to form a pretty delicious concoction! I'm not sure if I'd eat it again, but you should try it at least once. If you're in the mood for some raspberry coulis atop a flourless
chocolate cake, try French pastry chef Gregory Quere's contribution to their menu, GQ. And don't miss out on the Pabana either. With perfectly blended passion fruit, mango and key lime in a coconut mousse, you'll never question the combination of flavours again. A surprise hit for me was the Forêt-Noire. Don't let the fancy name confuse you, this is a black forest cake. And, I dislike black forest cakes. Unless of course, they're light cakes with sweet cream, chocolate-loaded, sprinkled with kirschwasser (a German cherry brandy) and balanced with dark cherries so as to not overdo either sweet or sour. Of course, at most Indian patisseries, the German cake consists of thin white cream, watery cake and too many sickly sweet red cherries. Lucky for me, La Folie decided to serve a delicious black forest just like it's meant to be served. By the time I made it to the chocolates, I was sure nothing was going to wow me more than it already had. But, out came the 70% Venezuela chocolate. The dusting of cocoa powder on top of the most delicious dark chocolate square left me complaining about just one thing — it was way too small! They sell their chocolates in boxes of nine for `495 and you should buy as many as you can, because they're all amazing. Desserts here might cost a little more than you're used to, but they'll taste a lot better too.

Interview
KING KUNAL! Afternoon Despatch & Courier Special
MUMBAI MUMBAI| |FRIDAY, FRIDAY,SEPTEMBER FEBRUARY 28, 03, 2014 2010
From being featured in the Limca Book Of Records for creating India’s largest chocolate tower to being a judge on Masterchef India, Kunal Kapur has done a lot! Glynda Alves interviews the celebrated chef to get a peek into his life (and frigde!)
K
unal Kapur is one of the most celebrated faces of Indian cuisine today. He is chef extraordinaire, TV show host, winner of several culinary awards and an author of several upcoming cookbooks. He has also been a judge and host on Masterchef India. Currently, he is a judge and host for Junior Masterchef India. We get talking to him about all things food. And of course, his guilty pleasures! How did you develop a passion for cooking? I was born in a Punjabi joint family where I was the only boy surrounded by cousin sisters. When the family would get together on Sundays, I would refuse to play with the girls. So, I ended up where all the men of the house were — the kitchen. The men in my family (especially my dad) loved cooking. He would make me sit on an inverted Dalda tin and allowed me to stir whatever he was cooking. I still remember how he taught me to bhuno meat (fry) on a slow flame. I enjoyed the entire process of cooking in that old kitchen with everyone laughing and talking. In college, it turned out that I knew more about cooking than anyone else in the batch. Naturally, I got appreciation from my teachers and that motivated me to study food further. I feel I owe it to my dad for bringing out the chef in me. What was your most career defining moment? When I joined Leela Ambience Hotel and opened Diya the Indian restaurant, I told myself that I would make it the best Indian restaurant. I worked very hard with an excellent team. Together we made a fantastic restaurant that won the best Indian restaurant award in the first year of its launch. And subsequently for the next three years, we won the Best Restaurant award by Times Food Guide. This award is the reason I was approached to host Masterchef India. And the rest... well, the world knows what happened. What’s your favorite dish to make? I am in love with karela. Raw mango and karela is a great combination and the recipe I use is from my mother’s kitchen. I just cant get bored eating it. What do you think is overrated? Molecular Gastronomy is overrated. I appreciate food in its original rustic avataar rather than tasting it in spheres, foams and mists. Which dish do you think is underrated? Indian halwa. It has the capacity to go global. It’s just waiting for the right guy to take it forward. Which country is the most forward when it comes to food? America I think is the place where the food is very upfront. It is a land where it is okay to have wild ideas. I feel the best sellers around the world come from the USA. Which six people would you invite to dinner? And what would you make? If this wish can be granted then only one person, my grandpa. We lost him a few years ago and I miss cooking for him. He loved kulfi and I can give anything to prepare the kulfi for him again. What’s always in your fridge? Chocolates, ice creams and cheese. Always. Which are your favorite restaurants in Mumbai? So many of them, but all time favourites are Mahesh Lunch House, Gomantak, Trattoria, Yautacha, Indigo and Wasabi. What’s your guilty pleasure? Chocolates. They just lift me up every time. I love chocolates in any form. Hot chocolate soufflé, warm ganache, dark chocolate rocky road, thick dense chocolate mousse, brownies...

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (February 28, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose moderately on Wednesday (February 26, 2014) a net 38.75 points (0.62%) and closed at the 6238 point level. Support (1) = 6212. Support (2) = 6185. Resistance (1) = 6256. Resistance (2) = 6273. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:
On Japanese c andlestic k patterns the index af ter having for med a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a long w hite body candle on substantially higher volumes. Game Plan to invest in IPs and Solutions: In 2008, the company realized that continuing with its services’ focused strategy would lead to margin erosion, as the lower end of the bread and butter services like (1) based mapping and image processing and (2) GIS data and system integration work were getting increasingly commoditized. In order to ensure that, the company did not slip on the margin front, the management took the decision to embark on an IP led model to serve segments like (1) business data overlay, (2) business intelligence functionality, (3) advanced analytics and decision support and (4) technical support and maintenance. Traction in overseas business gaining impetus 1. Over the past 15 months ROLTA has doubled its overseas revenues in USD terms from USD35mn/quarter to USD68mn/quarter, through a combination of mining its existing clients and new client wins through acquisitions. This has been achieved despite the quarterly run rate of domestic revenues slipping from 2.7bn/quarter in 1QFY13 to 2bn/quarter in 1QFY14, as the order flows and issuance of work orders from the Government has been muted. 2. As the strategy and focus of the company is to grow the overseas revenues faster in the current environment, the flow of EITS orders has been relatively faster as compared to EGES over the past few quarters. Though the EGES revenue growth on a sequential growth remained sluggish, EBITDA margins were good. Whereas the EITS revenue growth was robust, EBITDA margins continued to witness compression. EITS accounts for close to 70% of revenues while EGES accounts for about 30% of revenues. Our view is that ROLTA would witness a compression in its EBIDTA margins on a consolidated basis as it migrates towards more non-GOI orders from GOI orders and over the next 3 to 4 years the company should have a sustainable 35% - 36% EBIDTA margins from the current annual margins of ~40%. Our hypothesis is that the company despite having a debt of Rs35bn has been posting positive operating free cash since several years except for FY’13 which witnessed the massive cleanup exercise. We now expect the company to start paying higher taxes from the next fiscal onwards as depreciation benefits expire and the company has now adopted the financial year ending March as per the Companies Act 2013. Promoters have hiked their holding in the company from ~40% to 50% during the last 3 years through the creeping acquisition route in line with SEBI guidelines. We believe that with a 4% dividend yield, ROLTA is an interesting bet in the defense space and investors with a horizon of one-year can accumulate the stock on declines for a price objective of Rs110.

Investment Rationale: Radio Mirchi is the only FM station to have consistently reported Operating and Net Profit for the last seven years. Elections likely to be beneficial to ENIL. Radio business to benefit from reduced airtime for TV channels. Growth in number of advertisers. Phase III of FM radio licensing promises further growth opportunities. Strong brand image and International foray. Phase III could make the industry more conductive to M&A and Radio Mirchi can be a serious hunter. Risks and Concerns: Macroeconomic risks. Risks related to talent retention. Regulatory Risks. Increasing competition. Conclusion & Recommendation: ENIL being the No.1 player in the Indian radio industry and it recently entered the International market with its launch in UAE, with in its first year of operations it was voted the best, all this suggests how strong the brand Radio Mirchi is. The phase III of FM auctions are likely to open up strong growth opportunities for the sector in the future. ENIL has a strong balance sheet, debt free status and cash on books enabling it to go in for strategic M&A to expand its footprint. At the current market price of Rs.365.05 the stock is trading at 16.3x FY15E EPS. Investors could buy the stock at CMP and add on dips between Rs.312-Rs.323 band (14x-14.5xFY15E EPS) for sequential targets of Rs.413 and Rs.446 (18.5x and 20xFY15E EPS).

tandard Chartered has appointed Sanjeeb Chaudhuri to the newly created role of Group Head of Brand and Chief Marketing Officer. This appointment is effective1 April 2014. In his new role, Sanjeeb will oversee all brand and marketing teams across the Group, and take overall responsibility for developing a singular, cohesive brand strategy. This will underline Standard Chartered’s recently announced re-organisation, in which the Wholesale and Consumer Banking businesses will integrate. As part of this, he will also spearhead a significant drive towards optimising Standard Chartered’s brand recognition across digital and mobile channels, enabling the bank to better cater for customers who are increasingly living online. Sanjeeb will play a key role in helping to deepen understanding of ‘Here for good’, which remains the cornerstone of the bank's brand proposition.
Laboratories ended on February 26 and it "has requested for further extension so as to implement the project."The company is setting up a pharma SEZ in Andhra Pradesh and has invested Rs 150 crore on infrastructure facilities in the project, it said. Tata Consultancy Services has sought extension of its Letter of Permission beyond April 23. According to an industry expert, besides the global slowdown, uncertainty over tax exemptions to new SEZs has led to declining interest in such projects. Investors are apprehensive about the proposed
Direct Taxes Code (DTC). According to the revised DTC draft, which will replace the Income Tax Act of 1961, tax exemptions for SEZs will be confined to existing units. SEZs have emerged as a major route for attracting investment and increasing exports. The government has also announced an incentive package to revive investor sentiment. So far, 577 SEZs have been formally approved, of which 173 are in operation.SEZs contributed over 25 % to the country's exports. Overseas shipments from these zones stood at Rs 5.56 lakh crore in 2012-13.
Manappuram Has Upside From Current Levels By A Business Reporter
C
RISIL Research has assigned a CRISIL IER fundamental grade of 3/ to Manappuram Finance Ltd. The grade indicates that the company’s fundamentals are `good’ relative to other listed equity securities in India. Our fair value of the stock is Rs 28 per share. At the current market price of Rs 23 per share, our valuation grade is 4/5 indicating that the market price has upside from the current levels. The assigned fundamental grade reflects that Manappuram Finance, the second-largest non-banking financial company (NBFC) providing loans against gold in terms of AUM, has been in consolidation mode since the regulatory changes started in 2012. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been tightening operational norms of lending against gold, viz. introduction of loan to value (LTV) cap, limit of cash transaction and auction process. The latest regulations released by the RBI in January 2014, mandating 75% LTV cap, improve the competitive positioning of gold loan NBFCs against banks and unorganised players (compared to the tighter 60% LTV cap guideline issued by the RBI in September 2013). Despite aggressive competition from banks, NBFCs score over them on quick disbursement of loans and customer convenience. Given the abundance of privately-held gold in India, regulatory clarity, established systems and Manappuram Finance’s wide reach, CRISIL Research is positive about the company’s business prospects. The company is adequately capitalised with capital adequacy ratio of 22.7%, including tier I capital of 20.6% in FY13. Its capital adequacy ratio is much higher than the regulatory requirement of 15%. It is also well placed to comply with the mandated tier I capital guideline of 12% (up from 10%) applicable to all NBFCs, having >50% AUM in gold loans, by March 2014. The grade is moderated by the company’s dependence on a single line of business and regional concentration; South India contributed 72% to its AUM as on Q3FY14. The diversification to other secured
forms of lending should lower the dependence on one business but we expect the new segments to take time to gain traction. However, the company is also exposed to the risk of a sharp fall in gold prices in the short term. Further, the removal of import duty (10%) can lead to a correction in gold prices to import parity levels. As regards the financial outlook; CRISIL Research expects AUM growth to normalise at a three-year CAGR of 5% to 114 bn in FY16. Cost-toincome ratio is expected to improve to 59% in FY16 from 64% in FY13 due to sweating of assets and rationalisation of costs. About 8% of loans with above 75% LTV ratios remain outstanding, shortfall has been provided for. Credit cost as a percentage of AUM is likely to improve to 0.1% in FY16 from 0.7% in FY13. PAT is estimated to increase at a three-year CAGR of 23% of 3.9 bn in FY16. Gross NPAs are estimated to improve to 0.5% in FY16 from 1.2% in FY13. Improvement in asset quality would also be supported by the company’s collection process, which has been beefed up to mitigate the risk of higher NPAs.
BUSINESS BRIEFS Govt Set To Approve 10% DA Hike
The Union Cabinet is set to approve a proposal hiking dearness allowance (DA) to 100 % from existing 90 % in its meeting scheduled today, media reports said, a move that would benefit 50 lakh Central government employees and 30 lakh pensioners. The decision comes ahead of the imposition of the model code of conduct by the Election Commission, which will come into force with the announcement of the schedule for the forthcoming general elections expected in a few days.It would be the second double digit DA hike after the 10 % hike in September last year, effective from July 1, 2013. Music maestro Ravindra Jain’s celebrates his birthday on February 28. In a career spanning more than four decades, Jain has given innumerable hits like ‘Geet Gaata Chal’, ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se’, ‘Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaye’, ‘Faqira’, ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’, ‘Chor Machaye Shor’ and others. More than his laurels however, Jain was known for his will power, which never allowed him to let his handicap of being born blind affect his work. Rajesh V. Gaur and Suneel V. Gaur interviewed him recently. This is what he had to say: Are there any special memories of the chart topper “Le Jaayenge Le jaayenge …”? Sippy saab, the producer, told me to make a duet for the film. I made so many tunes, but they were constantly rejected. Finally, I was tired and told Sippy saab that this was my final tune and if he didn’t like it, I would leave the film. When I sang the tune with the dummy lyrics, he immediately said, “This is what we are looking for” and till today, marriage bands play the song.
What are your memories of Kishore-da? Kishore-da was a god gifted singer, a genius, a modern day Baiju Bawra. People may say he was eccentric, but he was very serious about his work and quickly grasped the mood of a song situation. He kept the atmosphere light and everyone happy with his jokes and pranks.
What was your experience of working with Raj Kapoor? Raj-ji had a great sense of music. He told me that he wanted to use ‘Ram What are your views on Lataji? ITH his straight-faced jokes, Farhan Akhtar found an easy bakra (scapegoat) in me,” says Vidya Balan, his co-star in the upcoming film ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’. “I love to laugh and Farhan loves to make people laugh so the ‘funda’ was very clear. I enjoyed his sense of humour. He has a very sharp mind. I have seen the film and I am glad that we got together for this one where the comedy is very true to real life,” Vidya told PTI in an interview. Having been a fan of Farhan’s earlier films like ‘Luck By Chance’ and ‘Zindagi Milegi Naa Dobaara’, Vidya says they were wellmatched in the Saket Chaudhary-directed comedy, a genre which is relatively new for both the actors. “Farhan is one of those actors who is subtle even in comedy. It is effortless and yet it makes you laugh. He is supremely talented in a multidimensional way. Acting is about reacting. This film would have suffered if any of us was out of tune but we were well-matched in it. We were completely tuned into each other which is great as an actor. We complimented each other,” she says. The 36-year-old actress, who got married to UTV CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur in 2012, signed up the film a few months after the marriage, but does not believe that her marriage has influenced the character she is playing in the film. The film, a sequel to Saket’s 2006 film ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’, is slated to release on February 28.

Purab Kohli – who has starred in several films and commercials– will again be seen in a different role in the upcoming film ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’. Even though his role in the film is brief, Purab’s performance will surely have a lasting impact on everyone . Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to him about his latest venture.

ness, but have obviously faced difficulties on a personal level. I have always tried to count my blessings and not focus on my handicap. My motto is to never give up, irrespectuve of the hardships. Life is like a song which has to be sung. It actually reminds me of my own song, “Geet Gaata Chal Oh Saathi Gungunata Chal...”
How did you get this role? I’m glad Pritish Nandy Communications and director Saket Chaudhary thought of me for this role. Also, an opportunity to work with Farhan Akhtar after ‘Rock On’ is always exciting, especially when there is comedy involved. Do you have any screen time with Vidya Balan? I spend more screen time with Vidya, who is not only a talented
actor, but also such a beautiful and strong woman. What was it like working with Saket Choudhary? Working with Saket was lovely. It’s always easy for an actor when you work with a director who clearly knows what he wants. As for the film, judging from the script and the promos, I’m sure it’s going to do well. What is the film all about? The film is about a young couple that experiences comic events after their marriage.
What was it like working on the film? It was great to work with Ram Kapoor, Gautami Kapoor, Vir Das and the others.
Mama Shakuni turns lyricist By Chaitanya Padukone
N
OTED senior actor Gufi Paintal – who became immensely popular as the scheming legendary ‘Mama Shakuni’ character with the ominous limp in the iconic telly epic show ‘Mahabharat’, and has also acted in various TV serials and Bollywood movies thereafter – is now exploring one of his hidden talents. The exuberant Gufi, who was honoured at the annual Hum Log Shivraatri Awards convened by Mohan Mirchandani at the Radio Club, has discreetly turned lyricist. When Paintal announced this on the stage at the Awards event, the audiences gazed at him with disbelief. To prove his point, as a live-demo, he read out a couple of song lyrics penned by him for the upcoming youthful rom-com
Hindi movie ‘Big Flirters’ written and directed by Arhan Akhtar (not to be confused with Farhan Akhtar), for which the music will be scored by Sajid-Wajid and will feature beauty pageant winners, including Afroze Khan, claims the director.
Sarah-Jane Dias to turn singer
S
ARAH-JANE DIAS, who will be seen this year in films like ‘O Teri’, ‘Happy New Year’ and ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’, is taking Western singing lessons for a reason. Sources close to the actress suggest that she will be lending her voice for a few tracks in her untitled upcoming film.
When contacted, Sarah confirmed about the vocal training but refused to give any information about the film or its title. Sources also confirm that she has been taking vigorous training in both singing and contemporary dance for almost a month and was recently spotted at Ashley Lobo’s dance school.
One of the catchy songs which goes ‘Charcha Hi Charcha’, has the word ‘charcha’ repeated several times. Talking about this, Gufi says, “It was a huge challenge for me to write lyrics for today’s fast-forward youth. Maybe chatpataa songs like these will make me the topic of ‘charchaa’.” Currently, the actor is wrapping up his directorial venture of Chattisgarhi movie ‘Maathari’ (mother) in which he has also acted. “In this movie, all the seven songs have been written by me,” says the actor, who has also been shooting for a Rajshri project, which is being touted as a thriller produced by Kavita Barjatya and titled ‘Samrat & Co.’ It has Rajeev Khandelwal as the ingenious detective and Gufi plays the role of the family lawyer.

T a gathering of film people a while ago, where the portrayal of women was being discussed, the issue of sexual exploitation—flippantly termed the casting couch—came up, and the overriding opinion was that it is a matter between two people, and if the woman is willing to submit for real or promised gains, no law can be invoked. For years, the exploitation of women was an open secret, and multiplied far beyond its actual occurrence through the grapevine, which is never an accurate indicator of what goes on in the industry. However, as it happens in the film industry and outside, women are reluctant to complain about harassment or worse, rape, because of the trauma that inevitably follows when their life is thrown open to scrutiny by just about anyone. The man rarely suffers. The woman has to prove that she is of good character and did not lead the man on, while

The film in question is 'Action Jackson' and the girls other than Sonakshi are Yaami Gautam and Manasvi Mamgai. However if one thought that the 'Dabangg' girl was fretting too much about all the inhouse competition, it is far from true. "The truth is that Sonakshi doesn't have too many scenes together with either Yaami or Manasvi," informs our source. For someone who is used to playing solo leads in each of her nine released films so far, right from 'Dabangg' to 'R... Manasvi as well which is the very reason why they feature in the Ajay Devgn starrer which is produced by Sunil Lulla and Gordhan Tanwani. "All three female characters are very well etched and have their own space to play around. It all fits in well into the scheme of things," an insider from the film adds, ''You would realise how all three heroines are relevant to the core plot once the film releases.''

Vincent admits not reporting bookie’s approach WELLINGTON: Former New Zealand international Lou Vincent confirmed that he failed to tell authorities when a bookmaker approached him about fixing a match in Bangladesh, but said that was the extent of any wrongdoing. Vincent said he had pleaded guilty to breaching the International Cricket Council's (ICC) anticorruption code by not reporting the approach while playing in the scandal-tainted Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) last year. "I confirm I rejected this approach at the time. There is no allegation or suggestion that anything untoward occurred beyond the approach itself," Vincent said in a statement. The 35-year-old, who played in 23 Tests and 102 one-day internationals for New Zealand, added: "I have no involvement in any of the matches, or matters

Kishan Gangolli and Darpan Inani lead after Sacred Heart, Lawrence make final six rounds
Yudhajeet De competes against Shirish Patel during the round robin match of the National A Chess MUMBAI: Kishan Gangolli (KAR) and Darpan Inani (GUJ) are jointly lead with five points each after the completion of six rounds in the 13 player round robin National A Chess Championship for the blind, being held here at Vasai. Sirish Patil (MAH), who had a bye in the sixth round, follows the leaders with 4.5 points from 5 rounds. Darpan Inani (GUJ) with white pieces played the King’s pawn opening against Yudhajeet De (WB). Yudhajeet went wrong early in his Sicilian Defense letting white space advantage which the world bronze medalist Darpan deftly exploited to earn full point. Madan Bagayatkar (MAH) with the white pieces tactically outplayed in the end game and won the game on the 46th move against Shidad M (KER). The game was equal until the middle game but the veteran Madan. Kishan Ganolli (KAR) played the Queen’s pawn opening against Prachurya Kumar Pradhan (ORI). In a roughly equal middle game Prachurya played rather passively and soon got a cramped position. Kishan’s aggressive play fetched him first a pawn and then the full point in the 25th move. The game between Soundarya Kumar Pradhan (ORI) and Sachin Lahu Wagmare (MAH) was drawn since the ensuing

EW DELHI: Virender Sehwag's decision to continue batting at No 3 didn't make much of a difference to his poor form but defending champions Delhi did enough to beat Jammu and Kashmir by 38 runs in the opening fixture of the north zone leg of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Delhi scored 256 for eight in 50 overs after being put into bat on a typical low and slow Feroze Shah Kotla wicket with skipper Gautam Gambhir scoring 58 and adding 99 runs for the opening stand with Unmukt Chand (42). While Sehwag coming in at No 3 scored only 15, Puneet Bisht (39) and Sumit Narwal (22) threw their bats around as

While Unmukt was bowled trying to whip the offie across the line, Gambhir got a faster delivery and was rapped on the pads trying to play the cut shot with very little room for it. he Poonawalla family provides several attractions to gently persuade people to come to the Mahalaxmi racecourse. The car is a big attraction – it is a free contest of skill. You don't have to buy a Rs. 500 ticket to qualify and participate in the free contest. Those who are invited can bring any number of friends and relatives. In the first enclosure, the first 5000 get free entry. And also a voucher for Rs. 50 to buy tickets. It is the Poonawallas who first started the gift of a car for those who win in the contest of skill. And the Million race became multi-million
and now it has crossed over one crore. May be there will be a Poonawalla day in the future when the sponsorship exceeds Vijay Mallya's McDowell Derby sponsorship. The winner on Sunday was Shivalik Storm which is trained by the trainer wizard Cooji Katrak. Looks like as if Katrak has a special way of training that gets his horse better than the best. So Safe, the favourite just could not make it at the all-important end. The first three were involved in a close finish. Almost all the races on Sunday were sponsored by the Poonawallas. I'm really happy that we played really well overall," Rahane said after India's six-wicket win over Bangladesh here which also snapped their eight-ODI winless streak. "We played good cricket,
even the bowlers in the last five overs did really well. I think credit goes to the whole team and Virat batted brilliantly," said Rahane who scored 73 and shared 213 runs with captain Virat Kohli (136) in India's run chase of 280 which was achieved with aplomb.
