even days after the gang rape of a 22-yearold photo-journalist, Mumbai’s crime branch on Wednesday re-created the entire crime episode by taking all the five accused to the crime spot. Investigators from UnitIII and forensic experts, along with the joint commissioner of police (Crime) Himanshu Roy, visited the secluded eight acre area of Shakti Mills in Mahalakshmi, where the crime was committed. Apart from this, the investigators would take a supplementary statement

of the victim, who was discharged on Tuesday from Jaslok Hospital. “This becomes of utmost importance, as the victim can now give more details than earlier. On the day of the incident the girl was traumatized and not in a position to give us all the details.” The cops have recovered the clothes of the accused and a dupatta from the crime spot. The dupatta does not belong to the victim girl, but was lying there and all the accused made the victim to clear the spot by wiping it with the dupatta.

But as he strutted around, promising the city a ‘cleanup’ even as Patnaik made a quiet exit, it was hard not to feel seriously shortchanged by the Home Minister. That was a year ago last August. Ganesha speaks – and the news is not good!

Expect little comfort from our police commissioner Dr. Satyapal Singh, who seems to think that we could keep ourselves safe only by following a complicated set of rules aimed at pushing most of us back into the century before last.

Cut off from reality

If ever a police commissioner seemed totally dissociated from his city, it is our very own Satyapal Singh who seems unable to open his mouth without putting his foot in. Yet we are urged to think of this Maharashtra cadre IPS officer of the 1980 batch with admiration because of his position. We haven’t visited the Commissionerate at Crawford Market for a long time, partly because it looks forbidding and unfriendly, literally bristling with security, but mainly because we have no motivation to do so. What do we know about him? He is going to be 58-years-old on November 29 and I doubt the women in this city are going to send him bouquets. After all, what do you wish for a man who equates the legalisation of prostitution with the legalisation of rape and murder! And what common ground can one find with a man who, while wearing a modern-day uniform, reveals time and again that his mind is locked into the middle ages! A Google search reveals that he wanted to be a scientist before he joined the IPS, that he is a PG in chemistry, following this up with an M Phil, that he has an MBA from Australia, that he has an MA and a PhD in Public Administration. We were told he has a blog, so we checked that out as well. There are three posts in 2011, 20 posts in 2009. Dr. Singh is something of an expert on the Vedas and his last article is more than 1800 words long. Of course he does not subscribe to the modern penchant for brevity! He had 202 followers! Full disclosure? He inspired unease when he walked jauntily into the press conference that was called to bid the previous police

commissioner farewell. Perhaps it is unfair to compare him with Arup Patnaik who paid a political price for the fall-out of the Azad Maidan

Just as we were wondering where our favourite astrologer had disappeared, along came this piece that shows he is working very hard indeed to interpret the interplanetary movements that govern our destiny. At least, that is how he sees it. Much more prosaic, we prefer to think of it as rotten governance and corrupt leadership. “The nation has seen plenty of ups and downs in these 66 years, and undoubtedly also had a glorious, illustrious growth story, but what next? Award winning India’s number one astrology portal GaneshaSpeaks.com predicts that there may be a growing disillusionment and dissatisfaction among the common people, terrorist attacks, political environment, natural disasters, violence and diseases, price rise, employers to hold back jobs, people managing their households and work pressure, exhausting quite a lot of energy in money management of their expenses and ensuring the security of their families’ future, a wider gap between the rich and the poor in

Two from Barcelona. Members of the Castellers de Sants who have come to participate in the Gokulashtami festivities in Thane, take a bit of time-off after practising a human tower at the Gateway of India.

Will they bag a prize this year? They must be serious about it alright. The Castellers de Sants, a human towers team from Barcelona received an invitation to come to Thane for the festival last year, and promptly began work on making their project successful. They started out by

targeting 150 people to travel here, with the goal of raising 90,000 Euros to fund the trip. We don’t know if they succeeded but it is very likely they have. For they have brought 241 people along, to act as the base of the tower as the experienced ones go up and

up, forming as many as nine layers. Today we should be able to see them at work. And there is another reason why they are so excited. They will all be on Catalan television and of course, on Indian mass and social media. Estimated audience - over 27 million people! So it’s okay if we let them blow their own trumpets.

significant political impact during last quarter of 2013. “Unfortunately, terrorist attacks are also possible, particularly during the last quarter of the year 2013 and beyond. Natural disasters, violence and diseases too are foreseen during the forthcoming year. Indian youth and students may also rise up in revolt and social media and communication technology will play significant role in the youth uprising due to Mercury’s position. “The transiting Saturn and Rahu conjunction in Libra indicates that there may be heightened crisis in the Border States, frequent clashes with the neighbouring countries, agitations and disruptions – the beginnings of all of which are quite visible. India-Pakistan tension on the Kashmir issue may also crop up every now and then, during the rest of 2013 and in 2014. “Chinese aggression against India in Kashmir region may also cause some serious concerns for the country’s internal security. Jammu and Kashmir and the neighbouring states may also be prone to natural calamities. “The exchange between 8th House Lord and the 10th House’s Lord is also significant which will bring major challenges for the ruling coalition government. The forthcoming eclipses will fall in the 12th house in the Oath taking chart of UPA 2 and it indicates that some of the key allies may withdraw their support from the coalition during the last quarter of year 2013. The frustrating conditions may force the government to announce the general Election before its actual schedule.” That’s it for now from Ganesha. However, we should, in the interests of fair play, point out that many of our own expert commentators are saying similar things, without referring to the planets of course.

September 2 MLC poll sees Gopinath Munde pulling BJP out of race, and supporting independent candidate against own nephew Dhananjay

By Prashant Hamine

05 CITY CM promises justice While accepting that no leads have been found yet in Dr. Dabholkar’s case, the CM assures of a fast and fair trial in the Mumbai rape case

T

he specter of horse trading appears to loom large over the September 2 Maharashtra Legislative Council seat from the Elected by Members of Legislative Assembly (EMLA). Not taking any chances against his own estranged uncle and BJP deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde, NCP candidate Dhananjay Munde yesterday called upon Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray at the latter’s Dadar residence to seek support of 12 MNS MLAs. However, MNS sources later disclosed that the party president has decided that the MNS will abstain from voting. Despite having numbers on his side, Dhananjay Munde, wary of his estranged uncle’s political clout, is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that he retains his seat which he had won in July 2010 on a BJP ticket. Unlike the Rajya Sabha elections, which is held by open ballot, the MLC elections are still held by secret ballot. The Congress-NCP alliance has 179 votes on its side while the BJP-Shiv Sena opposition alliance has 109 votes to bank on. In this election for a lone seat, the requisite quota of first round votes needed for getting elected is 145 votes. The electorate for this constituency comprises of the 289 MLAs of the lower house. The partywise tally is as fol-

By Suyash Padate

C lows: Congress 82, NCP 62, BJP 47, Shiv Sena 45, MNS 12, PWPI 4, Jana Surajya Paksha 2, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi 2, BBM 1, CPI-M 1, Loksangram 1, RSP 1, Swambhimani Paksha 1, Independent’s 24 and Nominated 1. The CongressNCP alliance has 34 surplus votes, while on the other hand the BJP-Sena led opposition needs 36 more votes for its candidate to win. The only question remains is, how many surplus votes does Kakade manage to split from the Congress-NCP vote bank? The BJP is banking upon, what it feels is the growing resentment within the Con-

gress-NCP ranks over the way the state government has handled the drought, floods, infrastructure, power, irrigation and other sectors of the state economy. In a clever move, the BJP withdrew its two official candidates Basavraj Mangrule and Shriprakash Shukla from the fray. The move behind making it a direct contest between Kakade and Dhananjay Munde is because Kakade happens to be the cousin of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. On paper, in the numbers game, the odds are heavily stacked against Kakade.

hief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday confessed that no concrete leads have been found in rationalist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar’s case even after a week of his murder. Speaking to reporters in Mantralay, Chavan said, “The accused and conspirators in the rationalist’s murder will be exposed soon. Nineteen teams of police are on the job. The investigation is being carried out from various angles and phone call records are also been checked”. When asked about the photojournalist gang-rape case, the CM said, “We will punish the accused, as it will send a strong message to others. The government is trying to make this case wa-

tertight. There are some problems in judicial processes. However, we are trying our best to make the case strong. We will file the chargesheet after due consultations with special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam”. “Measures will have to be taken to speed up the rape cases (trial in fast-track courts) as it is found that the cases related to rape are not being reported,” he added further. Commenting on the sharp fall in the value of rupee against the dollar, Chavan said, “Difficult times are ahead. However, the state’s economy is not going to be affected directly. The pressure will mount on foreign exchange. If at all the price of diesel goes up then prices of commodities will shoot up too”.

et in another case of atrocities on women, a two-months pregnant Nandini Suraj Jadhav (19) committed suicide by hanging herself to a hook of a ceiling fan along with her dupatta on Tuesday in Kurla (West) at around 10:30 p.m. following dowry demands. According to Sunil Reddy (40), the uncle of the deceased, “The girl’s father owns a 2-acre land in Nanded. Before marriage the in-laws and the husband had demanded the land as dowry. But since the girl’s parents are poor, they did not part away with it.” Reddy has alleged that the parents of the girl had demanded a sum of Rs.3 lakh before marriage, which the girl’s parents had given to the Jadhavs. Reddy also alleged that Tunkappa Enkappa Jadhav alias Kadamallya (55), the father-in-law, mother-in-law Shantha Jadhav (50), sisterin-law Sunanda Jadhav (18),

husband Suraj Jadhav (24) and brother-in-law Avinash Jadhav (20) were physically and mentally torturing her. Reddy alleged that it was the sister-in-law, Sunanda, who had beaten up the deceased in the past. Reddy added that for days together Nandini would not be given any food to eat. Radha Gadge (40), the mother of the deceased and Annumnata Gadge (50), the father are natives of Nanded. The Jadhavs are natives of Solapur. Nandini and Suraj tied the knot in January 2013. According to the investigating officer (who does not wish to be named). “Tunkappa Jadhav, Shantha Jadhav, Sunanda Jadhav and Suraj Jadhav have been arrested on Wednesday. They have been booked under Section 304B (punishment for dowry death). While Avinash Jadhav is currently absconding. The body of the deceased was taken to Rajawadi hospital and postmortem reports are awaited.

Close aide of underworld don Chhota Shakeel targeted again, this time by unknown gunmen at Malad West

lose associate of underworld don Chota Shakeel and well-known bookie, Ajay Gosalia alias Ajay Ganda, wanted in several criminal cases, was shot at by unidentified persons outside Infinity Mall in Malad (W) on Wednesday afternoon. Gosalia ran into the mall to save himself but got hit by two bullets. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital. Gosalia is a known face in the area between Malad and

Borivli, and was handling Chhota Shakeel’s match-fixing business in the city. This is not first attack on him. He was attacked by some unidentified persons last year in Borivli, but subsequent investigations proved the attack was a fake one that he had himself planned to gain popularity. According to sources from Bangur Nagar Police station, Ajay Gosalia alias Ganda was at the Goregaon Sports Complex, and decided to walk to Infinity Mall when an unidentified miscreant turned up

and fired five rounds, of which two bullets hit him, one on his leg, and another passed through his chest. Given his past, many questions arose in the minds of police officials. There were three shooters but only one attacked him, while the other two remained seated inside a grey color Innova car, parked across the road. If they wanted to kill him, then why they choose the Infinity Mall gate, when he walked all the way from Goregaon Sports Complex which is about a kilometer away?

Politicisation of a rape case A

NY issue, any incident – a rape for instance – is enough for political parties to fly at one another’s throats and indulge in a heated exchange of words. The spokespersons of parties – and in each party there are quite a few – make derogatory, witty remarks and try their best to show their opponents in poor light. When the Asaram rape case happened, both the Congress and the BJP jumped into the fray and their spokespersons criticised each other. The BJP leaders said Asaram could not have raped a 15-year-old minor. The Congress said that the BJP leaders – among them was Uma Bharati – were supporting the guru because he had lakhs of followers who would vote for the party recommended by him. The Congress too was, in the beginning against any action against Asaram. It is because of the support of top political bosses that the guru was evidently left alone. There was no move for either arresting him or interrogation by the police. Thanks to the tough position taken by the politicians, the police acted slowly and delayed investigation. What has become apparent is that the police dared not take quick action against him. In the meanwhile, the blame game continues between the BJP and the Congress.

he only good news that comes with Sonia Gandhi’s food bill is that she has finally made it clear that she is India’s real prime minister. And, for the first time accepted personal responsibility for a policy decision made by her government, a decision that will one day be remembered as the last nail in the coffin of the Indian economy. In the ten years that she has ruled India from behind the prime minister’s shadow, she has evaded accountability for all mistakes and scandals and accepted praise for the things that have gone right. This is probably what she intended when she ‘sacrificed’ the prime minister’s job in 2004 but actually ‘sacrificed’ only accountability. Not power. So if you are puzzled about why she chose to come out of the shadows last week and make one of her rare (no more than five) speeches in the Lok Sabha while presenting the food bill you would be right to be puzzled. So before going any further I shall analyze why she has suddenly decided to take charge in what could be the last few months of Congress rule. First, let us get some perspective and admit that just as there is no point in pretending that India’s real prime minister is Dr. Manmohan Singh there is no point in pretending that in the past decade India has been ruled by a United Progressive Alliance coalition.

According to the rumour Sonia Gandhi was ‘tired’ and would like to retire but felt unable to do this until she was sure that the political legacy she inherited from her husband and mother-in-law was safely handed down. If she has gone out of her way to lend her name to the food security bill it is because she believes that it will be a ‘game changer’ at a time when there seems to be no possibility of a Congress government coming to power in 2014. comes law because it is the wrong solution to a truly shameful problem. Half of India’s children are malnourished not because they do not get enough food grain to eat but because they do not get the right kind of nourishment. I have said before in this column that street children in Mumbai need milk and green vegetables more than bread and rice and it is because their parents cannot afford such things that they are malnourished. The same is true in rural India where children who live below the poverty line often have access to cheap food grain but not to better forms of nourishment. So more supplies of food grain will make no difference.

Food Security Bill

What would have made a huge difference would have been if the Rs.1,25,000 crore that we will soon be spending annually on cheap food grain could be spent instead on sanitation and clean water in rural India and in urban slums. Most deaths of children under the age of five are caused by diarrhea and this is always caused by contaminated water and filthy living conditions. Our tragedy is that not a single political Tavleen Singh party dared take a position against Sonia Gandhi’s food bill on these valid grounds. Gang rape: Kudos to Mumbai cops for excellent detection AS reported Mumbai Police need to be complimented and congratulated for nabbing the five rapists in such a short time. It was a marathon task and not easy as these rapists had spread all over in city and Delhi. Thus it is not wrong to state that Mumbai Police is the best and next to Scotland Yard for its efficiency and promptness and makes Mumbaikar proud and creates a sense of safety and security. But this could have been avoided if Mumbai Police cares to patrol isolated and desolate places regularly which are suppose to be beehive of druggists, criminals and rapists. But one does not understand why faces of criminals are hidden and covered. Their faces should not be covered or hidden in public view and should be exposed so that they should be ashamed and disgraced in public. One fails to understand why Asaram Bapu has not been arrested or nabbed for interrogation and moves defiantly in public, insulting at the same time the law and order and police of the country.

Science Laboraroty at Kalina has taken this case on a priority basis and will submit the reports in five days. One hopes that all these sincere efforts will lead to justice being done to Nirbhaya-2 speedily. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

THE recent gang rape of a young 22-year-old photojournalist by five men in Mumbai is another blot on the face of India. THE only punishment to give a rapist is to cut off his sex organs and parade him naked on the streets. This will not only teach him a lesson, but it will deter other rapists too. No amount of praise will be too high for the Mumbai Police and the Crime Branch for taking up the Shakti Mills gang-rape case with an unprecedented degree of seriousness as a prestige issue for the state. They have done a magnificent job in catching hold of all the five culprits in less than three days with sustained well-coordinated efforts. Media reports say that the police have woken up the sketchartist, Nitin Yadav, at 2.30 am and got all the sketches of the accused done in about three hours! Mumbai Police has done its job by arresting all the five accused in record 60 hours time and deserve appreciation for acting promptly. Now the ball is clearly lobbed back into Govt’s court for quick justice. Govt has promised to appoint fast track court which it should appoint without any delay, otherwise the Mumbai Police who fanned across India to nab these criminals will be discouraged. APROPOS your article ‘Tightening the screws’ (ADC, Aug 27). A very big deal is made of the fact that the Mumbai Police have inducted teams of forensic pathologists to look for and examine clues at the site where the photojournalist was recently raped. As is done in all developed countries, forensic teams are routinely called in to examine a crime. Instead our flatfooted cops almost invariably trample all over a crime scene, thereby obliterating any forensic clues. This is the principal reason why the Mumbai Police have such a dismal conviction rate. Gathering of circumstantialevidence is given a low priority, if it is thought of at all. It is a shocking state of affairs that many of these brutal crimes are committed by history sheeters who have been arrested for similar crimes in the past; and are now freely roaming our streets. Daniel Rey along with his wife, Kristi; daughter, Ali; toddler son, Hunter, and their dog, move to Carlsbad, California. A few days later their residence is broken into, however, nothing appears to be missing. In order to prevent re-occurrences, they install a number of security cameras that will record everything on a DVR. After they hire a Spanish-speaking nanny to look after Hunter, she informs them that there is something wrong in their house and performs prayers, much to the chagrin of Daniel, who lets her go. He will subsequently regret this decision as more inexplicable and strange incidents occur, with Ali concluding, after a research, that their house may be possessed by a demonic entity. Pi x, 9 p.m.

City of disgraCe

Mumbai used to be the city of dreams. It was a women-friendly city. Now, even daylight can’t mask the horrors of abuse, molestation, assault and rape. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh talk to people around the city to find out what they have to say about it all

J

ust a few months ago, Woman’s World carried an article on what to do in case you are attacked or witness one. Prior to that, we ran an article on self-defense classes for women. Before that, we touched upon the topic of sexual harassment of women. Unfortunately, in the three years that the Woman’s World team has been up and running, we’ve seen a steady rise in cases of assault, rape, harassment, acid attacks and violence. Our girls and even boys are no longer safe. When will it stop? When will those in charge finally take charge? When will there be accountability? When will justice be delivered? And unfortunately… we have to run yet another article on the lack of safety in the city. Statistics say that cases of rape in the city have increased by 80% from 2012 to 2013. Yes, you read that right. Before the horrifying news of a gang rape of a young photojournalist had even set in, Monday’s news saw the attack and assault of a woman on a train from Goregaon station, who was taken to hospital to recover from injuries. The city is reeling under the weight of disgruntled citizens and very angry women. While we wait patiently for action, take a look at what men and women in Mumbai think of their city and what punishment they think is best for those who violate women. Continued on pg 14 «

subordination” (Wikipedia). I have seen how it creates insensitive men who have such a sense of entitlement and scant regard, let alone respect for women. My house help pulled her daughter out of school even though I was paying for her education and her son stayed in school despite failing three times. My cook is horrified when I make my two sons do chores and took a loan from me to buy her nephew a laptop, not her daughters who are both studying. A girl in my store works and goes to college — her earnings all go towards her brother’s comfort. Do I feel safe? Sadly, no. I have been driven toward an empty mill compound by a cabbie and I opened the door, jumped out and ran into a market place. I think our legal system provides adequate punishments. A real change has to come from the society.” — Sandhya Gorthi, 38

I lIve In fear “The other day, around 7.30pm I was coming home from work and the auto driver took me through a deserted route I was not aware of. Alarmed, I asked him where he was taking me from, but he rudely said that it was the right route that I knew nothing about. So... do I feel safe? No. I live in fear. My mother worries too, but what do we do? How can she protect me? Should we never leave our homes? We need better methods of identification because a lot of these men can just disappear in a flash. We need the most stringent punishment possible — castration. This is the only punishment that could affect a rape convict as much as the crime itself does to the victim.” — Ensia Mirza, 23

IndIa Is for crIme

not a free country

“I don’t feel safe. I was never brave and what happened recently has shocked me. I’ve thought of moving, not because foreign countries have no crime but because there is no action here. After the Delhi case, no action (that I’m aware of) has been taken. There is no respect for women — politicians watching porn, police raping… you can get away with anything here. I used to think Delhi was for rape and Mumbai for terrorism. Now I think India is for crime. I feel like they should be castrated — to let them brutally and slowly feel the pain.” —- Khushboo Gala, 23

“India is supposed to be a free country, but it isn’t anymore. At least for women, there is still so m u c h discrimination. It’s high time people and the system wake up. The punishment for a rapist should be brutal, so that it creates fear in other people’s minds.” — Shamim Mannan, 23

I’m safe, but everyone Isn’t The state of our city is pitiful. I feel safe but what about those women who commute for work to places by public transport and come home late at night. I don’t know what punishment should be the best. But, it should be strong enough to make them and others fear. — Aashka Goradia, 27

PathetIc women’s safety “The state of the city and country is pathetic when it comes to women’s safety. I don’t feel safe being out with a girl at night or travelling by public transport at any time of day. It seems like a big risk for the girl and the guy also. As far as the punishment goes, rapists should be castrated. But, more than the type and form, the punishment should be given when the issue is hot in the news. There is no sense in passing a jail sentence after two years.” — Ankit Arora, 23

don’t accePt harassment “It’s disgraceful to see the state of the country reach such a point that women fear to walk on the streets or even worse, start accepting that they will be teased or followed. As a guy, I don’t feel safe walking the streets with a girl. Rapists should be dealt with quickly, in a way that serves as both a punishment to them and a deterrent to others. Or possibly making them serve a large portion of their lives serving the people whose lives they ruin.” — Ryan Vaz, 23

It’s the way men PerceIve women “It’s not just the male psyche and the way men perceive women with such a primal vision, but also the state and the country that has to

mumbaI Is not safe be blamed. Men think that they can get away with it with the maximum of a couple of months in prison. I personally feel that the punishment should be life time imprisonment with no chance of parole.” — Steffan Loreno, 25

sense of safety Is lost “Everyone had a sense of pride for Mumbai, the city that is considered safe. The city that never sleeps is the way it is described, as one feels safe to travel even at night, or in the wee hours of the morning. But, the recent crime has set us back a 100 years as the sense of safety and security for women has been lost. Serious steps ought to be taken by our legal system to urgently address this, so that faith and trust in our beautiful city can be restored.” — Gargi Parab, 28

our judIcIal system Is ImPortant “More police personnel and more judges are necessar y elements for discouraging crimes against women. Rapists should be given same punishments, harsh and merciless, as in similar crimes given in Arab countries. Also, justice delayed is justice denied.” — Sachin Parikh, 34

there’s no hoPe

the country Is goIng backwards “The country’s economy might be developing at an exponential rate, but for some reason the development of women, their rights, their opinions in this country only seems to have taken a step backwards with each passing day. I would think several times before I even consider getting home alone late evening. The fact that I’m expected to change the way I dress is a clear indication that I do not feel safe in the land that belongs to me just as much as it belongs to my countrymen. As brutal as castration might sound, it somehow completely justifies the brutality of the crime.” — Alita Pinto, 22

must be PunIshed “I am ashamed of the city’s safety in our country. I am ashamed that men think so little of governments and police that they know they can get away with violating women every day on buses, in public, in trains and now even raping them — without any fear of punishment or law. Punishment for rapists should be chemical castration and lifetime imprisonment.” — Divya Palat, 33

“I used to believe Mumbai was a safe city, but now I know that’s just an illusion — the city lulls you into feeling a false sense of security. I am seriously considering carrying pepper spray or a pen knife. And I am going to think twice before getting into an empty local train or walking down a sparsely crowded street. I don’t know what else women can do to be safe. We still have to work, we still have to live. We cannot lock ourselves in our houses. The rapists should be given life imprisonment as quickly as legally possible without the possibility of parole.” —Pearl D’mello, 25

reform not worth the tIme “I think our country’s political parties see such events as nothing more than chances of political opportunism. It seems like no politician wants a true solution. Even if a solution does come to the fore, it’s all about whether the solution is beneficial to the party’s agenda. About the punishment: I can’t say what it should be, but whatever it is, it should be such that a deterrent is created. Hang them? Castrate them? Not sure. I don’t even think reform of such people is worth the time.” — Arjun Mehta, 20

they need socIal stIgma

“I now look behind my back even when I step out during the day. One of the mothers tried to pass off her rapist son as a minor — taking cue from the Delhi rape case and the fact that our laws allow for no strict punishment. Punishment should be castration. And I do not say this lightly.” — Akansha Gupta, 25

“We have a total policy paralysis and it is now coming out in the open more every day. While the incident is highly condemnable, we should not be jingoistic and lose sight from the issue. Cases happen almost every day and as the National Crime Register data suggests that the graph is upwardly moving in the city. According to me, nothing short than a life imprisonment should be meted out to these men. And when I say life I don’t mean 14 years. Let me them rot in jail forever.” — Supratim Dam, 23

“There’s no sign of hope. Women are constantly faced with solutions that require them to change. We’re waiting for a solution PatrIarchal system that permanently curbs the problem, not our freedom. The punishment should be capital “I think the problem lies in our patriarchal punishment.” system which “implies the institutions of male — Faye Rodrigues, 26 rule and privilege, and entails female

With Lakmé Fashion Week fever still going strong, Glynda Alves gets talking to some designers to find out what trends we can look forward to

sHruti sanCHeti

nisHKa lulla, Gennext

The inspiration for her collection at Lakmé Fashion Week was Maharashtra and Shruti tied up with the Maharashtra State handloom corporation for the same.

This winter, Nishka Lulla is getting ready to venture to foreign shores. Her suitcase is packed, but before this traveller takes off, we catch up with her to find out about her collection. Your bags are packed. Where are you off to? An European sojourn.

What did you learn from the weavers on your recent visit? Although I have done fashion and textile design, I feel that there is still a lot to learn from the weaver. Each visit of mine teaches me something new because their knowledge and skills have been passed down from generation to generation. For this year’s collection, my focus was on Maharashtra and I was amazed to see different intricate weaves which are not so well known. Describe your collection in a nutshell. My collection is a tribute to the proud Maharashtrians, their unsurpassed legacy and their lesser-known but exquisite weaves. It is a collection which is contemporary in styling but fiercely Marathi in soul.

A trend you currently love. A trend which I love is gold, which in the Indian context never goes out of style and also is an integral part of our festivities. A trend you wish would go away. A trend which I am not fond of is the 80’s way of dressing. How would you turn your style from catwalk to street-friendly? I am a firm believer in the rampto-rack or ramp-to-reality theory. I always design for the average Indian woman accounting for her figure flaws so there should be no problem with my clothes in real life. What trends to look out for in winter wear. The trend for winter is bright warm colours such as crimson, fuchsia, indigo, emerald, deep purple with lots of liquid gold, layered silhouettes and tribal accents.

Describe your collection in a nutshell. My collection sticks to clean and simple lines and thrives on separates, giving the wearer a lot of choice. Who is your collection aimed at? A confident woman with a strong sense of personal style. A trend you currently love. Check prints and midi lengths. A trend you wish would go away. Fur! How would you turn your style from catwalk to street-friendly? Pick trends that you love and layer outfits according to how you personally like to wear them. What trends to look out for in winter wear. Impact prints, midi lengths, retro colours and bold brights.

From films to fashion — why the change? I have been a closet fashion addict all my life! I read 15 fashion magazines a month. The fascination for the fantasy world created through silhouettes and flowing fabrics has only grown over the years.

Ken Ferns, Gennext Ken Ferns, a qualified fashion designer, has completed a course from NIFT. He is also a renowned fashion illustrator and now lectures at some of the finest fashion schools in the country. He has also done costume design for dance shows such as Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and Nach Baliye. Has designing for dance shows influenced your style? Costume design is different from what I present on the runway. What I design for dance shows is purely dance friendly and thematic. And what I showcase at LFW is a researched development of upcoming trends and styles.

Tell us about a trend you love. The trend that I’m currently enjoying is the burst of neon.

Describe your collection in a nutshell. My collection celebrates androgyny in the mind. A woman doesn’t have to dress like a man to embody the idea of the power that a man enjoys. The collection celebrates the powerful maratha warrior women.

A trend you wish would go away. Hair straightening needs to go — it barely suits Indian women.

Describe your collection in a nutshell. My collection is structured and fascinating in the interpretation of its theme. Bold and beautiful.

How would you turn your style from catwalk to street-friendly? A street-friendly style needs a street full of fashionistas! Just kidding! There are many elements in my collection that can work as street fashion, the easiest being prints.

Who is your collection aimed at? My collection is aimed at people who appreciate art and talent. I create a look that results in a certain degree of impact.

What trends to look out for in winter wear. A balance of colours, monochromes, prints on prints and all over repeat prints.

A trend you currently love. I love the trend of going back to our Indian heirloom textiles and weaves.

HarsHitaa CHatterjee DesHpanDe, talent Box Harshitaa at just 24, is a talented film maker/producer, fashion entrepreneur and now a designer participating for the first time at Lakmé Fashion Week in Talent Box.

A trend you wish would go away. There’s an overload of neon and net everywhere we look! What to look out for in winter wear? We live in a tropical country and so, for us it’s more about the festive season. This festive season I would look for long, flowing, stunningly hand-embroidered outfits in their full glory, done over a palette of emerald green, poppy reds and vivacious hot pinks.

Not only does a sunscreen help protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays, it also helps prevent tanning and pigmentation of skin. 2. under eye cream This is the mantra to delay wrinkles and reduce dark circles and puffiness around the eyes, which undermines amazingly done makeup. 3. eye kohl/kajal I believe kajal is a basic makeup requirement for every woman. It defines your eyes and can be used in multiple of fun ways. 4. mascara Mascara is the easiest way to make your eyes look bigger. Mascara can be used to instantly elongate your lashes for a

The curly haired actress always manages to stand out from the crowd with her sense of style. The dress is demure but the wide belt and low neckline gives it a sexy and tough edge. However, she is looking a little washed out and a pop of lipstick would have actually suited this look.

Aditi has toned down the bright and striped jumpsuit with a basic cardigan which makes this a simple and casual look. However, those bulky shoes are just overkill and ruin her look, making Aditi seem like she’s trying to be pre-teen. Simple sandals would have suited her much better.

« 5 WAYS TO ROCK:

« THE TOP 5: FLARED SKIRTS

A FLARED SKIRT 1. go casual Sometimes, a dark, flared skirt can look a little on the formal side. If you want to get the most wear out of it, you need to balance the formal with a little informal. Pair a dark flared skirt with a basic fitted t-shirt, the more casual the better. Tuck the tee in and add a statement necklace to complete your look.

1. vintage BuRst A burst of royal purple, flaming orange and happy yellow, you’ll feel luxurious and chic in this striking skirt from MCQ, available at www.kitsch.in Price On request 2. lightweight If you want to stay away from dark colours, pick up a subtle, mustard coloured skirt. This one from Vinegar is embellished with bronze rings. Price `2,190

4. cute cuts A must-have in your closet is this pristine peach skirt. Look no further than Lifestyle to pick up one. This cutwork flared skirt with its bold black waistband is perfect for any occasion. Price On request

2. shiRt style For a daytime look that’s easy to put together, try pairing a printed flared skirt (think floral) with a collared button up shirt in a solid colour or light denim. Instead of tucking the shirt in, tie the ends in a knot for a fun twist.

3. go classy If you want to keep the look simple and classy, pick up a basic, black flared skirt. We suggest logging on to www.kitsch.in to pick up this MCQ black skirt. Price On request

3. as a dRess If you have a flared skirt in a solid colour, you can disguise it as a dress by wearing a top in the exact shade. This works best for dresses in black and navy blue as the transition looks seamless. Add an edge by pairing it with bright shoes. 4. sweaR By sweateRs You would think that a flared skirt would look disastrous with a bulky sweater, but you’ll be surprised that the two actually look good together. The trick is to make sure the skirt falls above your knee and that the sweater falls just at the waistband. Also, roll up the sleeves to add a little structure to the style.

5. FloweR PoweR Head to Forever 21 to pick up this gorgeous black and white flared skirt. We love the flower motifs and how simple but striking it is. Price `939

5. Foot FiRst The best thing about a flared skirt is that it goes with any type of shoe. Heels, wedges, boots and even flip flops all work with the skirt. Keep in mind though, if you’re wearing your shirt/ top untucked, it’s best to wear heels to add some length to your look.

Co-Workers think you’re snoBBish? We tell you hoW you Can deal With it I am an introvert but not a shy person. I just don’t like being out there all the time and prefer spending time by myself. For instance, when I’m at work, I like to eat alone rather than with my colleagues. Recently, I overheard a few of my colleagues saying that they consider me snobbish because of this. I don’t know how to let them know the real reason behind me not having lunch with them without admitting to the fact that I overheard their conversation. Please help. — Foram lakhotia, shivaji Park dear Foram, Lunch is often a complicated affair when it comes to the workplace and every office has a different lunch culture. I understand your point that you like to eat alone but have you ever tried lunching with your colleagues? You might enjoy their company because lunch is the only time colleagues get to connect with each other at work and it might also help you in your professional relationships. As far as your me-time is concerned, you can find plenty of it during the weekends or while you commute. I am not saying that your colleagues are justified in assuming that you are snobbish, but give them a chance to know you better and they are sure to change their opinion. You need not join them every day, but doing so once or twice a week can’t be that bad, can it? I am originally from the South and moved to Mumbai four years ago. At my workplace, most of my colleagues speak Hindi or Marathi when it comes to casual talk, lunch discussions or office gossip. I feel left out because I cannot partake in it and I have a feeling they do not consider me as one of them because I can only communicate with them in English. I feel hurt when I have to deal with such a bias. It is quite late for me to pick up Hindi or Marathi as it is very different from the South Indian languages I am used to. How do I stop them from treating me like this? — shivangini nair, mulund dear shivangini, Linguistic bias is deep rooted in our country even though we call ourselves diverse. In certain pockets of the city, this bias tends to be stronger whilst in other parts it’s not present at all. I’m sure you must’ve noticed the same. You will be wasting your time trying to change the mindset of such people. Honestly, if your colleagues judge people based on the language they talk in, you are better off finding people who don’t rather than convincing the former lot. I’m sure you will find someone at work who doesn’t judge you because you don’t know Hindi or Marathi. At the same time, you should definitely try picking up at least a little bit of these local languages as they will help you get around the place faster and will make it a bit easier for you to form relationships at work. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

>> When the interviewer offers to answer any questions that you have, don’t shy away. Instead, get answers to a few important queries

F

or most of us, interviews are nervewrecking. And all that nervousness means that your mind will have you thinking that asking about salary, growth opportunities or daily work life is a tactless approach. That is the reason why at most interviews you’ll only be doing the answering, despite the nagging doubts at the back of your mind. However, you should be asking questions. To ensure that you land a good job, make sure you clear these things up during an interview:

the ComPany’s Future Once you decide to take on a job, it’s obvious that your professional future will be tied to the company. So, ask the interviewer about future plans and where the company will be in the next five years. This will go a long way in helping you know what your future may turn out like.

money matters No matter how much your brain urges you not to ask this question, it is important that you do. As long as you’ve played out your interview right, you won’t come across as greedy, even if your manners are telling you otherwise. You don’t want to end up in a position where you are dissatisfied with your pay.

JoB ProFile This is a tricky area, since you might come across as

unwilling to put in extra effort when needed. However, play your cards right and you’ll get an idea of what you’ll be in for. Ask questions about the usual job profile, their expectations from you and how your work will be assessed to help you understand your job.

the Work environment This is one of the most important aspects that you need to ask about during your interview. Many people end up disappointed with their jobs not because of the actual work, but because the work environment is not conducive to them. So, get information on their work culture, the office timings, weekly offs, the frequency and urgency of deadlines and other similar topics. This will help you get a list of points that will ultimately help you decide whether you want to take up the job or not.

other douBts Apart from what we’ve talked about, we’re sure there will be a number of other doubts that you’ll have — and they’ll be different for everyone. Go ahead and ask whatever you have on your mind. However, a warning — silly questions such as what does the company exactly do (you should research on that beforehand) or whether you can go on a vacation soon after you join (if you take up the job, ask them for a later joining date) should be avoided.

>> Leaving your lights on for the entire length of you vacation is not going to trick burglars. Here’s a list of things to keep in mind before you leave your house unmanned

HOLIDAY-PROOF YOUR HOME

When you’re away, burglars come out to play. Tejasvi Desai brings you some tips to make sure your home stays safe when you’re on vacation

W

ith burglaries on the rise, it is imperative that you take all the necessary precautions before you leave your house unmanned. Here’s a checklist for you to go through before you take off on your vacation:

sitter doesn’t stay overnight, he or she can stop by your house every day. Along with pet care, ask them to do a few daily chores that give the house the appearance that’s it’s occupied. This can include opening the curtains and windows for a little while, watering the plants and washing the car.

1. Trim Those TweeTs

3. spare The spare

Watch what you say online, because social media is a very dangerous tool. An innocent tweet about the family being together by the beach might lead burglars to your empty home. So, why risk it? As much as you’d love to brag about your holiday, don’t broadcast your upcoming vacation online, save uploading pictures for after the trip and if possible, turn off your location details, especially when the entire family is travelling together.

Don’t be stupid enough to leave a spare key outside your door. It is every burglar’s dream to get his hands on something like that! Take it out from beneath the doormat or plant pot you’ve hidden it under. It’s safer to leave a key with a trusted neighbour, relative or friend. If don’t trust anyone enough, just carry a spare set along with you.

4. LiGhTs on Timers

A few well-placed light timers will trick outsiders into thinking that you’re home and it’s business as usual. It also keeps you from Ask a friend to house-sit. 5. sTop The newspapers

8. Go biG broTher on Them

A pile of newspapers on your doorstep is a sure sign of an unoccupied house. Stopping the delivery of your newspaper when you leave town for a while is an easy detail to forget, but it will make your house a sitting duck. Make sure you call your delivery boy to stop the papers for the duration of your vacation. Be creative with the excuse as these delivery boys sometimes double up as thieves and break into empty homes.

Security cameras are a must for any premise. Make sure you have at least one that is clearly visible, as most burglars get deterred from trying something phoney by the sight of a camera. Place the others strategically and in well-lit areas, otherwise they will not be able to capture faces clearly. Check the feed of the cameras before leaving for your vacation to be sure of their functionality.

7. hide your vaLuabLes properLy Valuables such as expensive paintings, gadgets and jewellery shouldn’t be visible from the windows. Cover up the plasma T.V. in your drawing room and store all your jewellery and cash in a safe or in a bank

9. inform The cops If you are going on a long holiday, you should inform the nearest police authority about your absence. In most cases, they keep a look out for anything out of the ordinary around your house and it also ensures that you are not incriminated for any crime that happens in or around your property in your absence.

« TOP 5: THINGS TO KEEP YOU SAFE From apps to penknives and pepper sprays, here are a few things we think you must carry while you’re out and about in the city sTun Guns

A stun gun is a self-defense device that uses an electrical voltage to incapacitate a person. They act like tazers and will work against anyone, regardless of their strength, weight and height. They’re compact and easy to carry in your handbag. Pick up one from websites such as www.quikr.com or from Karan Air Guns and Pistols in Andheri (E).

pepper spray

Pepper spray, when sprayed at a person’s face or directly in their eyes, can put him/her out of action for at least 30 minutes, giving you time to call for help or run away. The bottles vary in terms of quantity and range. These are also

easy to carry around in your handbag and can prove to be really effective. Pepper spray is available on a number of online websites such as www.chilliguard.com and www.peppersprayindia.com.

swiss army Knife

When it comes to self-defense, a Swiss Army Knife might not be the best option because of the fact that you’d need to be very close to your attacker to be able to use it. But, it will serve as a deterrent at the very least. This multi-purpose tool is available at a number of stores.

This application is tried, tested and was the

winner of the White House Apps Against Abuse Challenge. Save phone numbers of a circle of six friends and family on it. In case of an emergency, tap twice to automatically send out a message to your contacts as an SOS. We think any application that helps you get in touch with a quick tap is a good idea.

Gps TracKer

GPS trackers can be expensive, but they’re a luxury buy that might be worth it if you travel a lot and can’t afford to keep your cell phone battery going for as long. IT was a historic moment on the sets of Indian Idol Junior as the legendary music composer Pyarelal made an appearance on the gala episode of the show. Pyarelal, along with 45 band members, took the musical quotient of the evening to another level as the entire set resonated with the melodious tunes of the orchestra. The show began with a medley of all the popular songs composed by Pyarelal. The top four juniors crooned the evergreen numbers with Shreya Ghoshal joining in to sing ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’. The music composer later revealed that he is a die-hard fan of the show and loved the way the kids were trained.

Shraddha has been through a lot lately with her husband Bobby Sood (Bharat Chawda) betraying her trust. With nothing going right for Shraddha, the entry of Kritika’s (Esha Kansara) brother, Kunal will be a turning point.

The government has issued policy which vested interests, quite often in private sector have changed, delayed or manipulated that policy. NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (August 29, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell marginally on Wednesday (August 28, 2013) a net 2.45 points (0.05%) and closed at the 5285 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5233 points level. It then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 5118 points level at 10.38 a.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.45 p.m. It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 5317 points level at 3.03 p.m. The index then dropped back into the red and turned into a range bound movement to close the day on a flat note. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session and moved in a range of 153 points. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 26 were losers, while 24 stocks gained. Buying was seen metal, technology, healthcare, power and auto stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in consumer durables and PSU stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volu me: Volume (Qty shares) increased 19.93%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 434 were gainers, 891 were losers and 55 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 30 level and is now turned flat (positive if it rises).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line and both lines are diverging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is flat. No signal here. Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 5385) Negative. Is below its 15-day average (at 5485) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 5620) Negative. Is below its 200-day average (at 5838) Negative. All the four averages are negatively trended. Negative.

5604 points level. The next resistance is at the 5695 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5241 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5163. Support (2) = 5042. Resistance (1) = 5363. Resistance (2) = 5439.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a small white body candle with a long lower tail. The long l ower tail indicates that the sellers domi nated trading and drove prices lower during the session. However by the end of the session, buyers resurfaced and pushed pri ces back. This indic ates that there is s trong buying support at lower levels. This candle also indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is below its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are declining and als o negative ly trended. Fur ther, the veloci ty parameters too indicate weakness. Both these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a fur ther decline unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major support l evel at the 5240 points level . (The index yesterday tested that level, intra-day). There is a possibility that the index could find some support and reverse from there. However, if it drops below it, then a further decline could be expecte d. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market but with a neutral bias.

The Commerce Ministry yesterday clarified the task force that was formed on Tuesday would restrict itself to issues pertaining to the swap of national currency for trade purpose only. “The purpose of the task force is limited to examine swap of national currency for trade which is distinct from currency swap agreements of Central Banks,” an official statement said.

Government Refutes Novartis’ Allegations

Tearing into the allegations made by Novartis on India’s ‘discriminatory’ patent practices, the government has said global firms, including the Swiss drug major, have benefited more from the country’s rules cornering over 80 per cent of the patents granted. “You would appreciate that more than 80 per cent of patents registered in India are attributed to non-Indians,” Commerce Secretary S R Rao has said in a letter to Novartis AG CEO Joseph Jimenez.

Rocky Road Ahead For India, Says S&P

Global rating agency Standard and Poor’s yesterday cautioned that large deficit economies including India could face more economic problems in the near term. “The road may be rocky in the near term, particularly for the largest deficit countries - India and Indonesia - but we don’t think this is the Asian crisis all over again,” said S&P report titled ‘South And South-east Asian Economies Grapple With Growth And External Financing Risks’. Observing that in normal times the countries with high Current Account Deficit (CAD) and high savings might not find it difficult to borrow in the international market, the report said, “When markets become risk averse, economies with Current Account Deficits often find themselves facing external financing pressure”.

lthough the country’s economic environment has been subdued with recovery expected to be slow and limited, “the fears of a severe slowdown seem to be unfounded. GDP growth, inflation expectations and industry and company performances are expected to record improvements this fiscal year. This would be notwithstanding the rupee depreciation, the increase in bank NPAs and limited monetary easing by the monetary authorities,” says a just released survey by CARE Ratings. The survey carried out to gauge the state of economy and investment given the difficult economic conditions prevailing presently, throws up certain interesting findings, some of which are contrary to the widely held perceptions on the economy’s health and progress. The responses of around 150 companies have been analyzed by the research house’s economic team. Primarily, what has emerged is that most respondents believe that the economy will perform better than that in the fiscal year gone by

i.e. by more than 5% and Inflation will remain in the same range or increase moderately from the present level of 5%. However, the respondents expect the rupee will remain above Rs 60/$. As regards the Fiscal deficit target, it is unlikely to be achieved notwithstanding the assurances that have been provided by the government. The respondents believe that there is an even chance of a further rate cut, which could be between 25-50 bps during the rest of the year and expect Bank NPAs to increase this year too. As regards the economy the re-

sponses indicate that the widely anticipated recovery in the country’s economy for the current year, projected at the start of the fiscal has been tempered. The Government of India and RBI are talking of lower than initially projected GDP growth of 5.5%. Relative to this revised target of the official sources, 70% of the respondents expect growth to be below 5.5%, with 27% looking at sub-5% growth this year. Nevertheless, the majority of the respondents (73%) expect the economy to record higher growth than that in 2012-13 i.e. above 5%. 66% of the respondents expect the country to grow between 5-6% in 2013-14. CARE’s own expectation is that GDP growth will be 5.4% this year with a downward bias. The Survey has also shown some encouraging observations, particularly with regard to the performance expectations for the respondents’ respective sectors and companies. A large proportion of the respondents expect their respective sectors to perform better or remain the same and not deteriorate this fiscal. In case of their own companies, 93% see status quo or improvement.

“Our Survey shows that the overall economic situation may not be as grim as feared by various quarters. While expectations are not quite cheerful in terms of growth, at the same time companies are hopeful that things will change and there are also capital plans at hand. Even though contemporary data does reveal that industrial growth is stagnant, companies are hopeful that their sectors could do better and that their own prospects are not that gloomy. This is a positive takeaway.” — D.R. Dogra, MD & CEO CARE Ratings

The sectors that are expected to see stable to better performance in the current fiscal include services, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, construction, jewellery, textiles, agriculture and engineering. Although, as per the responses, the finance sector is by and large expected to record a decline in performance in 2013-14, in terms of individual company performance, companies belonging to this sector are expected to see stable to im-

old continued to rally yesterday and surpassed all previous record after it touched Rs 34,500 per ten gram in the domestic bullion market as the rupee continued to slide record an all time low of 68.75 against dollar. Silver also followed suit by recording a high of Rs 58,500 per Kilogram. According to Shrinivas Viswanath, Cofounder, RKSV, a brokerage firm, gold touching record highs has to do mainly with rupee depreciation. “It is in bull market territory worldwide; however it has not hit record highs against the dollar,” he said. Worldwide, geopolitical tensions such as Syria have also attracted investors to commodities,” he added. Gold prices have rebounded in the near term on international markets from its oversold position (from $1200 to $1411) as miners have started reporting bare minimum profits, cutting capex which has led to a shortage of the physical metal in the international markets amidst mixed economic data from

Arab region tensions (Egypt, Syria, Iraq) may also support gold prices,” he said. “Looking at the cost structure of gold production, we don’t think gold will go below $1200/troy ounce for long,” he added. Gold in Singapore, which normally sets the price trend on the domestic front, rose by 1.3 % to US$ 1,433.83 an ounce, the highest since May 14 and silver by 2.6 % to US$ 25.10 dollar an ounce, a highest since April 15. he continuing instability in the rupee, which hit a historic low of 68.75 against the US dollar is affecting IT firms in signing new contracts with foreign clients, IT-ITeS industry body Nasscom said yesterday. “It is a real problem. We don’t know where to hedge, our customers don’t know where to hedge,” Nasscom President Som Mittal told PTI when asked whether the rupee instability

is impacting IT firms in signing new contracts with global clients. The rupee has declined over 20 per cent since April. “Now the question is when I’m going to sign contracts, I don’t know what the currency rate is going to be. My problem is shall I do it at Rs 60, Rs 65 or Rs 70 to the US dollar. So I have a problem is if I don’t see stability at what basis do I price. What do I tell my customer, what is the rate?” Mittal added.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2013 namics from your side i.e. you need to be able to find fulfillment in emotionally ‘equal’ or ‘adult’ relating. See a counsellor if you need help with this. Remember ‘Two people truly love each other only when they are capable of living without each other but choose to live with each other’.

Long distance relationship

I am a 26-year-old girl studying abroad. I fell in love with my boyfriend three years ago and we are in a long distance relation. I had earlier spent some 10 months with him in the same city. We both love each other. He is doing his PhD in India and I am doing it abroad. The last time I met him (eight months ago), he asked me not to keep in touch with him since that makes him miss me further. He lost his mother when he was seven and ever since I am the only person from whom he has received so much love and for whom he feels so deeply. I do call him up once in two months or so. My PhD will last another two years and I have a feeling that he resents the fact that I chose to do PhD abroad. But this was one of my dreams. He sometimes speaks very pessimistically about himself. He never talks of our future life together. I am very restless about him. But I don’t know what to do. Your boyfriend seems to be facing a childhood emotional deprivation and needs to heal himself of it, or else it will keep corrupting his current relationships, which is already so in his relationship with you. You sound as if you pity him and also feel somewhat guilty for being

away from him. The relationship that both of you share is one of co-dependency which is unhealthy for both. He ‘needs’ you and you have a ‘need to be needed’. This kind of parent-child relationship that both of you share will cause major problems later on unless both of you grow out of this co-dependency. In the mean time your friend needs to see a counsellor to help him live a more emotionally fulfilled life with or without you. You too need to examine what kind of pay-off you are getting in this relationship by playing the parent role. If you don’t introspect about yourself and increase the awareness of your motivations, you may land up in similar messy parent-child relationships over and over again. Whether you remain in this relationship or not, you need to change the dy-

I got into a relationship with a married woman who had just broken off from another relationship. I was very hesitant about it and told her that she was on the rebound. However, she insisted and convinced me that it was the best thing. Life was a dream for the first two months and we were inseparable. We almost breathed together and were also physically intimate with each other. She later told me to get married to her. Then slowly things began to change. She started becoming physically cold to me, we stopped meeting everyday as she started making excuses and I started noticing a different facet of her personality. There were at least 15 guys who used to speak to her regularly over the phone. She claimed that all of them were in love with her. All along we were in a relationship. She always maintained that she was not physical with any of these guys. We are not in a relationship anymore, as I could not take the pain and deceit. Can you kindly explain the behaviour of this woman? This woman’s marriage has turned sour, and that has left the woman in her feeling deeply hurt and rejected. Her self-esteem has taken a serious blow. Her self-worth has been threatened. All that you have described of her is typical of someone who very badly needs to reassure herself that she is desired by and attractive to men. Is this the grave of Alexander the Great? A RCHAEOLOGISTS have uncovered what could be the grave of Alexander the Great at a site near ancient Amphipolis. The warrior king -- who ruled in the 4th century BC -- was thought to be buried in Egypt. But experts have now become excited after they uncovered a marble-faced wall dating from the time. The structure measures an impressive wall measuring 500 metres long and three metres high, which archaeologists believe could contain a royal grave. The site near ancient Amphipolis lies 370 miles north of Athens. Site archaeologist Aikaterini Peristeri has voiced hopes of finding “a significant individual or individuals’ within. A Culture Ministry statement has enthused that the archaeologists have partly excavated a mound that has yielded a ‘very remarkable’ marble-faced wall from the late 4th century BC. Experts believe the ancient artificial mound could contain the remains of the king, or is at least an important royal Macedonian grave. The news has captured the Greek public’s imaginations and many people are hopeful the site

will solve the mystery of where Alexander the Great rests. However, Greece’s Culture Ministry has warned against ‘overbold’ speculation that archaeologists are close to uncovering the king’s remains. Alexander III of Macedon, also known as Alexander the Great, was a king of Macedon, a state in northern ancient Greece. He was born in Pella in 356 BC and was tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16.

However, by the age of 30 he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas. Undefeated in all his battles, he is considered one of history’s most successful commanders. He succeeded his father to the throne in 336 BC and inherited a strong kingdom and experienced army. Having been awarded the generalship of Greece, he com-

menced his father’s military expansion plans and in 334 BC began a series of campaigns that lasted 10 years. He conquered the whole of the Persian Empire but being an ambitious warrior, seeking to reach the ‘ends of the world,’ he invaded India in 326 BC but later turned back. It is believed Alexander the Great died in Babylon in 323 BC before his plans to invade Arabia. He is credited with founding some 20 cities that bore his name, including Alexandria in ancient Egypt, and spread Greece’s culture east. There are several stories about where Alexander the Great was buried after he suddenly died of a fever at the age of just 32 - although some believe he was poisoned. History tells that his body was laid to rest in a gold sarcophagus filled with honey. It is said to have been taken to Memphis before Alexandria in Egypt where it remained until late Antiquity. Famous Romans Pompey, Augustus and Julius Caesar are all said to have visited his tomb in Alexandria, with Caligula reportedly swiping the warrior’s breastplate for a souvenir.

about things in detail, her need to have men on a leash is indicative of a highly disturbed emotional state. She is collecting an entourage of men with a vengeance. She is in great emotional pain but she will probably never openly admit it, as it will amount to acknowledging to herself her feelings of rejection, and that is something which is too painful for her pride to admit. She needs to be in sustained therapy to heal her of her emotional wounds, or else these repressed feelings will continue to influence her entire life and corrupt all her relationships. Unfortunately, such people very rarely enter into therapy because if they say they need help, it amounts to admitting feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth. This is about her. As for you, get out of the relationship while you can still come out of it sane. As a friend, if you feel, you could advise her to get into therapy, but beware of getting emotionally involved. HMEDABAD: Controversial godman Asaram Bapu's son Narayan Sai yesterday said the girl, who had levelled charges of sexual abuse against his father, as "mentally unstable". "She used to take around two to two-and-half hours to bathe. And even during recess while in Chhindwara gurukul in Madhya Pradesh, she took 45 minutes. She seemed to be mentally unstable. To solve this problem, the parents of the girl accompanied her from Chhindwara to Jodhpur to take her to Asaram Bapu," Sai said, to his supporters in Rajkot. Asaram, 72, was on Tuesday served summons for questioning by a Jodhpur police team in connection with the alleged sexual assault case filed against him by a 16year-old girl, after making them wait for nearly six hours. Besides the summons served on Asaram, notices were also issued to the man-

ager of Chhindwara gurukul, hostel warden and the main caretaker of Asaram, who was present at Manai ashram in Jodhpur with him when the alleged sexual assault took place there. The girl was studying in class 12 at Asaram's Chhindwara gurukul before she was sent to Jodhpur ashram, police said. Asaram has claimed that he was innocent and regards the minor as his ‘daughter’. He has assured to cooperate with the police in the matter, police said. Jodhpur police has directed Asaram to appear before it for questioning within four days of receiving the notice. Asaram has been asked to appear before police on or before August 30, to record his statement, police said. He has been booked under sections 376, 342, 506 and 509 of the IPC, section 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and sections 23 and 26 of the Juvenile Justice Act.

Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2012" conveys government's determination to address "widespread and historical injustices". This has been done by establishing strong legal prerequisites that need to be discharged first while acquiring land. The Bill will replace over a century-old Land Acquisition Act, 1894, which suffers from various shortcomings, including silence on the issue of resettlement and rehabilitation of those displaced by the ac-

quisition of land. Besides, it had the much criticised 'Urgency Clause' which never truly defines what constitutes an urgent need and leaves it to the discretion of the acquiring authority. Apart from this, it provided low rates of compensation. The Bill is being brought for consideration and passage after two all-party meetings, which made the government accept five key amendments suggested by BJP’s Sushma Swaraj and Left parties. The Union Cabinet had approved the amendments amid the government's efforts to create broad-based political consensus on the key legislation. Among the amendments approved was the one suggested by Swaraj that instead of acquisition, land could be leased to developers so that its ownership remain with farmers and provide regular income.

"11 people have died in the incident, while eight have been rescued. Still, around 35-40 people are believed to be trapped under the debris," district officials said. Superintendent of state government-run Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital Dr Deveshwar Pandey told PTI that three women, a sixmonth old male infant and a 13-year-old boy were among those killed. The twin multi-storey buildings, which collapsed at around 4.30 a.m., caught the sleeping occupants unawares, H J Tapariya, chief

fire brigade officer of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), said. VMC commissioner Manish Bhardwaj, city police commissioner Satish Sharma and Mayor Bharat Shah and other senior officials were overseeing the rescue work. The locals alleged that the buildings collapsed owing to sub-standard material used in the construction. Atladara is a newly developed locality after merger of Atladara village with Vadodara city. The buildings were constructed by the Vadadora Urban Development Authority (VUDA) in 2002, officials said. Meanwhile, the Narendra Modi government ordered a high level inquiry into the twin-building collapse. "Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi ordered formation of a high level inquiry commission headed by retired chief secretary Manjula Subramaniam, to inquire the devastating twin building collapse in Vado- Fire personnel recover body of a victim from the debris of a Vadodara dara," an official said. Chandrayan helps NASA detect water on Moon Additional pension for 80-yr-old retd officials W

ASHINGTON: Using data collected by India's Chandrayan mission, NASA has detected magmatic water locked under the surface of the Moon. The findings represent the first remote detection of this form of water that originates from deep within the Moon's interior, NASA researchers told PTI. Earlier studies had shown the existence of magmatic water in lunar samples returned during the Apollo programme. NASA said scientists using data from the Moon

Mineralogy Mapper (M3) instrument aboard the Indian Space Research Organisation's Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, remotely detected magmatic water, or water that originates from deep within the Moon's interior, on the lunar surface. M3 imaged the lunar impact crater Bullialdus, which lies near the lunar equator. "This rock, which normally resides deep beneath the surface, was excavated from the lunar depths by the impact that formed Bullialdus

crater," said Rachel Klima, a planetary geologist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel. "Compared to its surroundings, we found that the central portion of this crater contains a significant amount of hydroxyl -- a molecule consisting of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom -which is evidence that the rocks in this crater contain water that originated beneath the lunar surface," Klima said.

FEDERER, DJOKOVIC ROLL AT OPEN, TEEN STUNS STOSUR SPORTS

EW YORK: Topranked Novak Djokovic and 17time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer advanced with ease at the US Open but 2011 winner Samantha Stosur was ousted by US teen qualifier Victoria Duval. Six-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic who captured his fourth Australian Open crown in January, launched his quest for a fourth consecutive US Open final by beating Lithuanian 112th-ranked Ricardas Berankis 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. "I managed to make a lot of breaks in the beginning of the match and take over control," Djokovic said. "That's what I wanted to do. I wanted to play every point like it's match point and I'm happy with the performance overall." Djokovic fired 10 aces and 28 winners and needed only 82 minutes to put himself into a last-64 matchup against Germany's Benjamin Becker. Djokovic, the 2011 US Open winner who lost to Andy Murray in last year's final and last month's Wimbledon final, improved to 12-1 in Arthur Ashe Stadium night matches, what he called "the most special night matches of any tournament anywhere in the world." Duval, a daughter of Haitian parents ranked 296th in the world, pulled the day's shocker with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Australian 11th seed Stosur in a tense struggle that

Victoria Duval lasted for two hours and 39 minutes. "A lot of different emotions. Mostly happiness," the 17-year-old with the high-pitched voice said. "I played amazing today. The whole match was just really an incredible match and I'm happy I pulled through." It was only the second Slam match for Duval, who lost to Kim Clijsters last year at New York, and her first meeting with a top-20 rival. Stosur made 56 unforced errors, 21 more than Duval, on her way to a her 15th first-round Slam exit, the first since last year's Australian Open. "Just let every single opportunity slip away and made too many errors and it really cost me," Stosur said. "I needed to step up more and do more. I'm not going to be a sore loser and say she didn't do anything

but I certainly helped her out there, that's for sure." Stosur split with long-time coach David Taylor just ahead of the US Open, but said she could not say if that was a factor in the loss. "I don't know. Who knows?" she said. "It is what it is. I can't change it. I made the decision I made at the time and I stick by it." Federer made a solid start to his bid for a sixth US Open title by defeating Slovenia's Grega Zemlja 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in a match delayed a day by rain. "There wasn't much rhythm out there, but I was happy the way I played," said Federer. "Overall I'm pleased to be in the next round." The 32-year-old Swiss star, who as the seventh seed is at his lowest spot in the US Open since 2002, will face Argentina's Carlos Berlocq in round two. Federer, whose 56th Grand

Hotshots storm into final with win over Pistons H

YDERABAD: Skipper Saina Nehwal of Hyderabad Hotshots proved without an iota of doubt that she is by far India’s best player registering her fifth straight win in the IBL. And in the process guided Hotshots to a decisive 3-0 lead with doubles pair of Shem Goh and Wah Lim edging past N Fischer and Thomas Sanave 16-21, 21-14, 11-7. The win by Saina over Julian Schenk of Pune Pistons meant that the red-hot favourites Hotshots took a 2-0 lead over Pistons. Saina was in impressive form as she stormed to a 21-10, 19-21, 11-8 win in the first semi-final on her home ground at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. It was a close and well-fought battle between the world No. 3 and world no. 4 and ultimately it was Saina who delighted her home crowd with a narrow win. Earlier Hotshots were given a shot in the arm by Ajay Jayaram who was in outstanding form as he stunned world No.5 Tien Minh Nguyen 21-17, 21-11 to put the local team in the lead. Jayaram began with a burst of power, smashing his way to a 3-1

lead in the first game. Tien Minh responded by dramatically altering the pace of the game to win five points on the trot and move in front 6-3. A couple of close calls went to Jayaram as he drew even with the Taipei player at 13-13. When Tien Minh was forced to lift one at the net, the Indian used the flight to strike a jump smash and remain tied at 15-15. The world No. 5 pushed long a couple of shots long to let Jayaram enhance his lead to 19-15. Tien

Minh misread the flight on a drive from his opponent and the bird dropped on the line to give game point to the Hotshots. Ajay took the game when the Taipei star floated a forehand too long and the crowd roared in approval. Buoyed by this, Ajay stormed to a 5-0 lead in the second game. When they returned on court after a short respite at 7-1 to Ajay, the 24th ranked resident of Bengaluru continued to play a forceful game of power and placement to keep his higher ranked opponent in check. Seeking to build on the platform laid by Ajay Jayaram, Saina entered the arena to a raucous reception. She has been treated like a rock star through this entire event and the local fans in Hyderabad have added to the din by lending it the might of their vocal chords. Schenk saved a couple of match points with some precise placements but at the third time of asking, Saina made the most of the rising tide of support inside the arena to deceive and tease her opponent with an intelligent kill from midcourt and take the first game.

Feeling good but can do better: Vijender

P

ATIALA: “There was a little bit of pressure but I am relaxed now”, said star boxer Vijender Singh as he dug from his wealth of experience to present a strong case for selection in the trials for the World Championships to be held from October 11 to 27. The 27-year-old, who was India’s first medallist in the World Championships — a bronze in 2009, took to the ring in a packed hall against rising boxer Sukhdeep Singh, who fought him without a headguard. “There was a little bit of pressure, it is just that I am good at hiding it. But I kept getting better with every round and ultimately, I am feeling good about my game,” the former world number one in middleweight said in a chat after the bout.
