ith the Indo-EU free trade agreement (FTA) in limbo, Brussels is focusing on bilateral relations and would be investing jointly in infrastructure projects in India. "If it's impossible to reach the goal for the moment to have an EU-India FTA, we need to enhance bilateral relations," visiting Belgian deputy prime minister Didier Reynders told PTI, yesterday. In pursuit of the same, Belgium has floated the idea of its sovereign wealth fund Federal Holding Company joining hands with India's Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services
(IL&FS), to create a fund that will invest in infra projects as well as in listed and privately-held companies in the country, he said. Reynders, who concluded a five-day visit to the country last night, said an agreement to set up such a fund was signed during his meeting with commerce minister Anand Sharma in New Delhi earlier this week. He declined to disclose the corpus of the proposed fund, or when it will be operational. The Federal Holding Company holds the stakes of the Belgian government in a host of firms across sectors and borders including the French banking major BNP Paribas. Belgium already has such tie-
ups with local funds in all the other BRICS countries for a decade, he added. "The goal is to work together to develop infrastructure here, to develop some new firms in different fields," Reynders said. "We are waiting now for some proposals, what kind of infrastructure projects are on the table and then we will see with the new fund on both sides, what are the possible projects to support and on such a basis, we start the process," Reynders said. An FTA between India and EU will make it easier to operationalise the fund, the deputy PM of the country's second biggest trading partner in the 27member EU said.
Sugarcane farmers demand better Gene Xpert machines shows rising number of TB patients price, agitation turns violent By A Staff Reporter
T
he agitation by sugarcane farmers seeking better prices for the crop turned violent in western Maharashtra, disrupting traffic at many places. Farmers, led by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna leader and MP Raju Shetty, want the sugar factories to declare Rs 3,000 per tonne as the first instalment for the crop. Due to the violence, state transport buses are not plying in Sangli and Kolhapur areas. The protesters burnt tyres on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway yesterday, leading to disruption of traffic, apart from pelting stones at ST buses and burning effigies of political leaders. Shetty said as most of the sugar factories in the state were run by politicians, they were depriving the farmers of their due. Last year, a similar agitation had led to violent protests in western Maharashtra and Marathwada. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan earlier this week led a delegation that called on the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. At the meeting, it was decided to form a threemember committee to look into the issue.Union minister and NCP leader Praful Patel said, "Pricing of sugarcane is a state subject...Issue

here is that market price of sugar has fallen drastically since last year. "Sugar industry does not depend only on domestic factors, it takes into account global phenomena. So it's difficult for sugar mills unless there is some intervention. "I am told that Maharashtra government is considering how the state can support mills. Also sugar factories have not paid arrears of hundreds of crores to farmers on account of price of sugar going down and the mills are facing liquidity problems." Soft loans may be provided to mills so that they could pay the farmers, he said. Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party urged the farmers to call off their agitation, as the Centre had formed a committee on the issue. "We urge sugarcane farmers to call off their agitation. They should not indulge in vandalising of vehicles and public property," NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik told PTI. The committee -- headed by NCP chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar -- will recommend the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sugarcane, he said. Malik also denied that NCP was putting pressure on Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in order to stop any decision on the issue. "The Chief Minister is efficient and is capable of taking the decision. However, he takes some time to take the decision," Malik said. Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister and Congress leader from Sangli Patangrao Kadam said that the farmers should get a suitable support price. "We have held a meeting with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh....However, a decision is not expected on the issue immediately. Once the Central study group makes the recommendation, the state cabinet will take decision," he said

CM directs MHADA to allocate funds for PMGP building repair By Prashant Hamine

n a major relief for the tenants of 66 buildings constructed in 1987 under the Prime Minister’s Grant Project (PMGP) in Dharavi, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday using a special power vested in him, directed the Mumbai Repair Board of the Maharashtra Housing Area and Development Authority (MHADA) to allocate Rs. 25 crore in its budget for the repairs of these buildings. The low income group tenants of these buildings were unable to carry out repairs to the buildings for a want of funds. The MHADA is supposed to allocate Rs. 25 crore in its budget over the next five years and the funds so raised, will be utilised to repair these buildings. It may be recalled Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan
that the MHADA had reconstructed about 269 dilapidated buildings in Dharavi into 66 buildings. In 2003 the MHADA had allocated Rs. 15 crore for the repair of these buildings. The 66 buildings – better known as PMGP buildings – were constructed in 1987, which was known as the then late Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi’s gift to the city during the Congress centenary celebrations which were held in Mumbai. The residents of the PMGP buildings had for quite some time been demanding government assistance in repairing the old buildings. These buildings then were constructed as part of efforts to redevelop the shanties of Dharavi. It was the biggest redevelopment project in the Mumbai Island City district.
the delay began. The NCP made a full-fledged attempt to portray its partner in poor light over the issue. The party conducted an opinion poll on its portal fixing the responsibility of the delay on Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. The Congress then came down heavily on NCP for adopting this way to target the CM. State Congress president Manikrao Thakre said, “NCP is our alliance partner and we have taken all the parties in

Though their plan was foiled by the police, Kamble and others performed a puja outside the Mill gates and returned.

“P
lease, don’t send semen”, requested the forensic laboratory authorities to the state police as few of the investigating officials are sending parcels with bottles of semen to six forensic laboratories across the state for the investigation of rape cases. It is a myth among the police that semen is the only crucial biological evidence to solve rape or related cases. Several Investigating Officials (IOs) have been forcing rape suspects to give their semen samples and sending the same to forensic laboratories.
To stop this practice, the Home Ministry brought out a government resolution (GR) earlier this year in August, directing the state police not to send semen samples in rape
cases if they are in a position to get blood samples or blood-stained clothes of the rape suspects. Forensic science plays a crucial role in solving crimi-

antralaya officers yesterday staged a protest and shouted slogans near the garden gate outside the institution. This agitation was organised by Mantralaya Officers Association for their various demands. The officials were protesting against the government’s policy of deputation. By way of deputation many nonMantralaya cadre officials have virtually encroached many posts in the state headquarters, due to which the officials from Mantralaya have been deprived of promotional benefits.
The officials have also expressed their displeasure over the new arrangement of Mantralaya. These officials strongly feel that after the refurbishing of Mantralaya, the interior has become congested which will hamper the day to day working. Even after directives from the Chief Minister, cabins have not been provided to the under secretary and deputy secretary, Vijay Chowdhari and Vishnu Patil respectively, the office bearers of the association have alleged. Biological factors like blood samples, urine and saliva samples are non-tamper able evidences and thus help the cops in solving complicated cases. However, there still are several myths among the police which end up hampering the investigation. A senior officer from a forensic laboratory said, “In rape or murder cases, women or children usually tend to scratch the attackers. NMMC to build drainage system near Turbhe MIDC police station By Khushboo Panjabi
T
he Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued a tender for drainage pipelines near the MIDC Turbhe police station. The estimated cost of the proposal is Rs.2.64 crore for which the e-tendering process has begun and will be open due till December 5. Turbhe police station is considered to be one of the oldest in the satellite city and the drain pipes will help the water flow out easily, especially during monsoon. A police officer said, “During the rainy season the office gets flooded and we have to move the files, furniture etc. to the upper floors.” Being situated in a low-lying area, the police have taken various precautionary measures. At present, the Tata Indicom office situated next to the police station has allowed the cops to make a channel for the water to flow out easily, but the flooding gets worse year after year. According to an NMMC officer, “The etendering procedure has already begun online. The final approval will be taken during the general body meeting.” khushboo.panjabi @afternoondc.in
gation is stalled”. Following requests from the Biological department of forensic laboratories, the Home Ministry sent out a DOs and DON’Ts list for the investigating officials and forensic experts across the state. Kalina Forensic Laboratory Director M.K. Malve said, “Biological proofs are credible enough and cannot be easily
tampered with so its evidence value is high”. Malve admitted that several police officials have been sending across parcels of semen. He added, “With technology, our processes also change. We are upgrading our technology and thus requested the investigation officials and forensic doctors who perform postmortems to co-operate with us”.
DOs and DON’Ts for doctors: DOs: During postmortem, preserve blood or canine (tooth) and hair from root, it is helpful for DNA test If clothes have blood stains, preserve them In rape cases, collect fresh blood samples of victims and accused Vaginal swab and pubic hair are helpful for blood/semen examination, so need to be preserved in sanitised packets Cut nails of the victim, it may contain micro parts of blood or skin of the culprits DON’Ts: Don’t preserve semen in rape cases Don’t cut the skin of the victim while cutting nails Don’t cut hair, instead pull them from the root for DNA test
DOs and DON’Ts for police: DOs: Dry wet clothes with blood stains otherwise they may catch fungi Put all the biological evidences in separate packets with serial numbers and descriptions If blood stains are found on immobile objects like door, wood, cement wall or tiles, scratch them with a sharp blade to get particles of blood DON’Ts:
Don’t send semen samples Don’t preserve biological evidence in hot or humid environment Don’t dry clothes with blood stains in sun. Ultraviolet rays may affect the quality of objects. Don’t iron blood-stained clothes

bserving that Railway Police's Crime Branch was not in a position to trace the man who flung acid on Delhi resident Preeti Rathi at the Bandra Terminus here in May, causing her eventual death, Bombay High Court yesterday transferred the probe to the Mumbai Police. The division bench of Justices N.H. Patil and Revati Dere was hearing a petition filed by the victim's father Amar Rathi seeking CBI probe into the matter. According to a PTI report, the bench directed the joint Commissioner of Mumbai Police's crime branch to appoint an assistant commissioner level officer to supervise the probe. It also pointed out that installation of CCTV cameras in the city does not ensure that the crime can be prevented. “What is the use of the CCTV cameras.... CCTV only identifies the person. The claim that once it is installed, crime is averted is a wrong impression. Nowadays, people have become bold and they commit crime on CCTV," the court said. On May 2, 2013, an unidentified man flung acid on Preeti Rathi as she alighted at the Bandra station. She was supposed to join the Colaba Naval hospital INS Ashwini as a staff nurse. Having suffered severe damage to lungs, she succumbed to the injuries on June 1 at Bombay Hospital. The police had initially arrested a man called Pawan Gehlot, but he was later released.

20-year-old maid committed suicide at Maker Tower-A at Cuffe Parade in South Mumbai on Thursday. Chanda Pawar, who was working as a full-time baby sitter and maid for over a year at the residence of Ramesh
Bulchandani, a businessman, jumped from the 23rd floor of the building at around 12:40 a.m. Pawar jumped from a room in the apartment which was allotted to her as a living quarter. The Bulchandanis were asleep when the incident took place. According to Padmakar Juikar, Assistant Commis-
sioner of Police, Colaba Division, “As per preliminary investigations, it is a clear case of suicide. A taxi driver who saw the body of the deceased lying below the tower called up the police helpline and informed them. However, no suicide note has been found.” The reason for Pawar committing suicide is not yet
known. A case of accidental death has been registered at the Cuffe Parade police station. The family of the deceased however, has alleged that there is foul play in Pawar’s death. They claim that Pawar did not want to work at the Bulchandani residence round the clock. kainaz.choksey@afternoon.dc.in

There is much speculation about why the girl attempted to end her life, apart from being upset over molestation by hospital security on the evening of November 25 and handed over to the cops at Agripada police station. The molestation was reported on November 26, after which a Non-Cognisable offence was filed against the accused, who was a relative of a patient undergoing treatment for cancer at Nair Hospital. When asked about why the student nurse made an attempt to end her life and also why the parents withdrew their complaint, Dr. Bharmal said, “We don’t
know what the reasons are behind this action of the student nurse and behind the parents withdrawing their complaint.” According to Dr. Suhasini Nagda, Director of Civic Hospitals and Dean of Nair Dental College, the molestation itself might not be the only reason for the student nurse to attempt to take her life. “The incident might not be the only reason for what happened. Apparently, there are some family problems too.

There might be multiple reasons, but right now, we can’t say anything for sure. We are investigating the matter. aries," said Municipal Commissioner Bharat Shitole. Eligible beneficiaries will be allotted One-Bedroom-Hall-Kitchen flats admeasuring 269 square feet. The project envisages 50 per cent share from the Central government, 25 per cent contribution from the state government for the construc-
tion of houses, while the remaining 25 per cent cost will have to be borne by the beneficiaries. Eventhough it has a zero per cent stake in the projects, the MBMC has to shoulder the key responsibility of providing basic infrastructure including -- roads, gardens, nullahs and water supply.

The society had appointed Vardhman Developers to redevelop the society, says a PTI report. However, after the appointment, another developer offered the society members Rs.1 crore each for vacating the premises. However, the society rejected the offer as it wanted to redevelop the property through Vardhman Developers only. However, out of 224 members, 179 members gave
their consent to Vardhman while 45 members objected and alleged the redevelopment plan submitted by the realtor in 2008 was not in accordance with the law and had expired. Justice Dalvi, while directing the tenants to vacate the premises, asked Vardhman to give an undertaking that it would construct and redevelop the property strictly in accordance with law and the sanctioned plan. "The redeveloper would
have to get the plan revalidated or submit fresh plan in terms of the agreement entered on October 21, 2007. The redeveloper agrees and undertakes to construct and redevelop the suit property and construct the new building strictly in accordance with law and in accordance with the sanctioned plan and the aforesaid agreement," Justice Dalvi said. The court clarified if any member fails to vacate his/her

"The court receiver shall take possession of such a flat from such a member and hand over such possession to the redeveloper. Once the building is completed, the court receiver shall hand over possession of the agreed flat in the newly-constructed building to those members," the order said.

Iran deal makes Iran safe W
HY are the advanced nations of the world ganging up to stop Iran’s nuclear programme? Iran is a sovereign state – a member of the United Nations. It appears that the nuclear club wants to keep out all new nations which want to go nuclear. Iran has every right to produce nuclear energy for its domestic use – for generation of electricity and for industrial and agricultural development. It being a sovereign nation, it should have the right to get nuclear energy for defence purpose. How can a gang of nations impose nuclear rules on Iran? A lot or pressure was exerted on North Korea for stopping it from producing nuclear bombs. North Korea ignored warnings from the world’s top powers, went ahead and produced nuclear energy and nuclear missiles that could hit the west coast of the United States. The big power attempt to stop all nuclear operations by North Korea failed. The United States, often described as the leader of the world, thinks the new rogue nations have to be forced to stay away from the nuclear scenario. Iran offered stiff resistance first, but after several months, agreed to change course. Finally, the five big powers have succeeded in arriving at a deal with Iran. The main nation which undertook a different mission in Iran was the United States. This nation has been hell-bent on ensuring that Iran does not produce nuclear bombs. There must have been considerable pressure, mainly from Israel, which must have been feeling uneasy when Iran stepped up its nuclear operations. The US has always protected Israel in the West Asia. Now it has done one more good turn for the Jewish state. Security of Israel is the motivation that has led to strong action by the big powers. It is a well-known fact that the US is the guardian of Israel. It has stood by Israel, its friend in West Asia and made its security and survival a little more certain.

N October 22, readers got a shock to learn from The Hindu about the drastic change in its editorial and business departments with the ousting of the editor as well as that of the Chief Executive Officer of Kasturi & Sons Ltd. (KSL). The editor, Siddharth Varadarajan was offered the role of Contributing Editor and Senior Columnist which he politely refused and thereafter resigned. In his place the Company’s Board of Directors appointed N. Ravi as the paper’s Editor-in-Chief and Malini Parthasarathy in charge of the paper’s Literature, Arts and Culture sections. The Board appointed N. Ram as chairman of KSL and N. Murali as co-chairman. The Board disqualified Arun Anant as the company’s CEO while K. Balaji has been appointed as Managing Director in charge of production and business strategy.

ence serving elsewhere. Siddharth became editor for a relatively short period of about 28 months but a long enough time to prove his personal style. According to N. Ram, Siddharth was editorialising in the guise of news and manipulating news coverage and was publishing “loaded items on politicians”, and, what is more, publishing “pieces that should have appeared in the editor pages and not as news items” – a pretty strong charge. Siddharth’s response to that was “there were occasional instances of editorialising that slipped in, just as they did when Ram and Ravi edited the paper”. As he saw the new development, what has happened “is merely an excuse to reverse the earlier decision to ‘professionalise’ the paper.” That sounds like a lame explanation. Surely The Hindu was just as professionally being brought out prior to Siddharth’s elevation?
About Siddharth Varadarajan It was N. Ram who, in the first place had appointed Siddharth as editor, way back in May 2011. It is the same N. Ram who, in late October, got him out for departing from the ‘core values’ of The Hindu. As the announcement put it: “The decision to make deepgoing changes was made chiefly on the ground that there were violations and defiance of ‘Living Our Values’, the mandatory Code of Editorial Value applicable to The Hindu.” Siddharth, who resigned immediately after the Board took its decision, told the media that the change meant that the Kasturi family members are back in power. Siddharth, the 43-year-old editor had had a distinguished career as a journalist and academician. An ‘American Indian’, he had served as visiting professor at the Graduate School of Journalism, University of California, Berkeley in 2007 and as Poynton Fellow at Yale University in 2009 and had also taught at New York University for several years before jointing The Times of India as an editorial writer in 1995. He joined The Hindu in 2004 as Deputy Editor and served as the paper’s Chief of National Bureau. In May 2011 he was elevated to editorship. That was the first time that a ‘professional’ journalist took over the editorship of the paper which always had some one from the Kasturi family in the top post. That should not mean that the family members were less ‘professional’, only that they came from the family circle and could not have had experi-
has been one down the decades – and has among family members enough editorial talent to run the paper successfully. It is not that the paper was on the verge of collapse in 2011 for Siddharth to resurrect it. In the course of his editorial lifetime he must have stepped on the toes of at least some members consciously or unconsciously though it is said that actually it was N. Ram who wanted Siddharth out. The point is made – and one can only go by reports – that it was N. Ram who wanted the editor out and it was his casting vote that did the damage. Anand, the CEO, apparently was trying to coerce migrate permanent employees to accept the contract system of employment with use of threats. The contract system now getting popular is vicious and nobody – certainly not the staff – would have been happy with it.
Support of the union In a report (October 23), the paper said that its employees have “welcomed the changes in the editorial and business structure of the newspaper company” stating that “the new changes have been made at the right time to safeguard the institution”. Also, said the report, “members of the union gathered at The Hindu main office, burst crackers and shouted slogans in support of the changes”. The employees are now going to get a goodwill incentive payment of Rs.40,600 in addition to a bonus of 20 per cent M.V. Kamath of wages this year. Obviously, the support of the union has been very essential to the Wasn’t N. Ram ‘professional’ during his term board. as editor? Tejpal’s act is a blot on journalists THE news of a sexual assault involving Tehelka founder and editor Tarun Tejpal has shocked the entire media fraternity and the nation. Tejpal, the face of Tehelka – a magazine famous for investigative reporting and so many fearless sting operations – has been accused of allegedly assaulting his younger colleague at a Tehelka conference in Goa earlier this month, forcing him to step down temporarily from his position. It is really very surprising that such incidents still occur despite the fact that India adopted the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, just over six months ago, to protect women from sexual harassment at their work places. Unfortunately, the rules mentioned under the legislation have not come into effect as yet due to the pending of an official notification and also lacks effective mechanisms to enforce it, such as a central database to register the number of complaints received. So before anyone uses his influence to get away owing to the ineffective Sexual Assault Law Act, the concerned officials should arrest the people who commit such heinous crimes. — Mohd Zeyaullah Khan, Nagpur
mindset of the elite occupying high posts and social positions. We are also forced to live with the anguish that women are unsafe and vulnerable in India. The media must practice what they preach and must shun making sensational news without ascertaining facts. They must also not conduct doctored sting operations for big money. The proactive social media, awareness of people and empowerment of women have made women strong, daring and powerful. — K.V. Raman, Malad
DISGRACE: Tejpal’s assault on his junior colleague has shocked not only the media fraternity, but also the nation.
IT is not shameful, but a high-profile disgrace that media magnate Tarun Tejpal has allegedly sexually assaulted his lady colleague and the act is a big blot on journalists. More disgraceful however, is the way Tejpal is trying to establish his ingenuousness by giving a different version of the incident after tendering his apology. This incident shows the dirty
THE rape case against the Editorin-Chief of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal, has become a political fight between the BJP and the Congress as Tejpal, in his bail petition, has mentioned that this is the BJP’s conspiracy to frame him. This case however, must be looked into as an issue of alleged criminality, and not as a political war between two national parties before the 2014 general elections. I strongly feel that the focus of the case should be to get justice for the victim who accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her, thus forcing him to accept that he made advances towards her despite her refusal to take part in any kind of sexual liaison. Therefore,
the matter really should be about what he allegedly did despite her reluctance. On the contrary, voices from social media as well as from political circles are turning this into a political stunt or drama of sorts. We have to focus on the criminality involved and change male mindsets at the work place, failing which we will end up forgetting the victim and focusing on political allegations. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune
AS reported, the Congress party has raised a lot of hue and cry and has protested over-snooping on a lady, but it is indeed very shocking and surprising to note that no protest or any type of sympathy is expressed when a lady was molested by Tarun Tejpal in Goa. Thus the question arises as to whether sexual assault or rape is less criminal than snooping. The Congress party is held bent on maligning Amit Shah, Namo and Baba Ramdev at any cost and this definitely exposes their double standards. The Congress has ruled the country for 60 years and is responsible for the present state of national affairs and crises. All this drama and play is only being made by the Congress party as the elections are around the corner. But voters will not pardon them for their failure and they should be ready to be booted out in the coming elections. — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai

No safety for women THIS is with reference to your edit piece, ‘Rape scenario becoming worse’ (ADC, November 28) which is undeniably and alarmingly true. The first few years of the 21st century have brought in the exponentially increased sex impulse among some men. This savage urge to outrage the modesty of a woman and violate her body is quite clearly the outcome of what is exhibited in the entertainment industry where raking in the moolah is the only consideration. Regrettably, it needs to be said that the representatives of the fairer sex, who are an OF important part of this in- LETTER THE DAY dustry, are themselves vying with one another just to maintain their market value. The net result is that what we see today in the media, including the weekly supplements of newspapers, is ‘sexposure unlimited’ which leads to sex crimes being committed on children of five and women of fifty alike even if the victims are fully clothed. Therefore the first step is strict censorship of exhibitionsim of all kinds. Then rape cases need to be fast-tracked and deterrent punishments awarded to the culprits.

Restraining Sharad Pawar
IT is reported that a Mumbai City Civil Court has ‘temporarily’ restrained Shard Pawar, Union Minister for Agriculture, from functioning as the President of MCA. The restrain, although temporary, should come as an eye-opener to Union Ministers, especially to those ministers that hold any other honorary post, so that they concentrate on the work related to their Ministry and provide solutions for the problems faced by the common man. It is painful to note that Pawar being the Central Minister for Agriculture seemingly ignored the problems faced by our country especially the inflation of the prices of essential commodities, in spite of a hue and cry from the public. Aarushi case judgement not satisfactory THERE is a slip between the cup and the lip in the sensational Aarushi-Hemraj double murder verdict, as Aarushi’s parents have been found guilty by the CBI court of killing the duo in a media hyped trial. It is hard to believe that parents can kill their daughter and more difficult to believe the CBI who has declared the Talwar’s guilty without direct evidence. The doors are still open for the Talwars to fight and challenge the judgment and one hopes the case is re-opened so that the facts are revealed. One must not forget that Aarushi’s parents were given a clean chit in the case before and it was they themselves who wanted the CBI to investigate the case and nail the culprit. The CBI has taken a U-Turn in the investigations, where witnessed sought by the Talwars were not examined a verdict was declared on the basis of half-truths and presumptions. By all means, punish the Talwars, but the sentence should be backed by factual evidence especially since this is what the law of our land emphasises on. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon
APROPOS ‘Aarushi murder case: Talwars deserve death! (ADC, Nov 27), both the print and electronic media are abuzz with the CBI court’s verdict on life imprisonment for the Talwars. Five years from now, we all read with rapt attention, the news of the twin murder committed by this couple, where their daughter was found involved in a tragic immoral case
WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE? One hopes that the case is reopened so that the facts are revealed. with the male domestic help. At that time, it naturally looked very brutal and at the same time, like an honour killing – the kind that the Khap community or other similar communities engage in. In this case, the CBI stopped its investigations for a while for reasons best known to them. Now all of a sudden, the verdict of life imprisonment instead of a death sentence caused the public to be intrigued. It is very sad for parents to witness such an incident, which I feel, could have been avoided if they had been more vigilant in observing the behaviour of their loving daughter. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai
THE verdict in the Aarushi case is out and the Talwars have been
handed life imprisonment for the way they acted in unison to get rid of Aarushi and Hemraj in a planned manner, and then tried their best to hide whatever evidence they could, in a clinical way. At the heart of the CBI’s case in this murder is a perverted patriarchal fantasy. The CBI and Noida police are convinced that 14-yearold Aarushi was having an affair with the 45-year-old domestic help, Hemraj. It was, after all, because of this affair, that her father Rajesh in a fit of rage, on seeing Aarushi and Hemraj in an intimate position, killed them both. One thing is for sure: the CBI was bent upon pressing for the death penalty for the Talwars, but they managed to escape with a life term. — C.K.S. Ramani, Sion

DEMOCRACY Chapter 8 Introduction In the last hundred years, the democratic system is being established in most parts of the globe in some form or the other. Currently, democracy is the most prevalent form of government. In societies where democracy doesn’t exist either people are engaged in struggles to bring about democracy or the governments in such societies claim that they are democracies. In this sense, democracy has become the most acceptable form of government body. Democracy is the most prevalent form of government. In Egypt and Tunisia, people are engaged in a struggle to bring in democracy. A section of people have always favoured dictatorship and strong leadership imposing discipline on the people. Of course, it is true that democracy is not a perfect or entirely flawless system. What distinguishes democracy from other forms of government is that flaws and weakness of democracy can be freely discussed and solutions can be found out. Therefore, it’s possible to consider the challenges and problems faced by democracy. 1] Challenges regarding personal liberty Liberty of every individual is treated as very important in a democracy. One feature of democracy is to give adequate opportunity to everyone for one’s own development. In practice, in many countries we find that citizen’s rights are restricted. Therefore, an important challenge before democracy is to retain personal liberty and expand it. a) Social pressure: One stage of democracy is to grant rights to everyone through the constitution. But if such rights are not acceptable to the society, they remain only on paper and in actual practice there are restrictions of people’s liberty. Social pressure is big challenge before democracy. b) Intolerance: Tolerance means accepting that opinions of others can be different from one’s own opinion and so allowing other opinions to be expressed. Conversely, if the society is intolerant, then it becomes a challenge before democracy. In such a society, the primary responsibility will be to create tolerance and respect for other’s opinion. c) Security and personal liberty: In recent times, security has become a major issue. To curb crime and terrorism, the government restricts personal liberty. There is a need to strike a balance between personal liberty and security. 2] Challenges about participation: People’s participation is the core of democracy. It is of course necessary that the rulers should be elected. Participation by people can be of four ways: a) Electing representatives (including becoming a representative oneself). b) To keep a watch on the functioning of the representatives. c) To take interest in and participate in the administration of one’s own locality. d) Participate in making of national policies. b) Low voter turnout: Elections are important in a democracy, because people elect their representatives through elections. These representatives decide the policies of a country and look after the administration of the country. This indicates lack/loss of interest in public matters. c) Limited initiative by people: The initiative taken by the people on public issues is very limited. It means that most people are not interested in politics. Not many people voice complaints about functioning of the local government. Higher the initiative, the stronger the democracy will be. But all democratic countries face this problem of increasing such initiatives. Otherwise, democracy will remain only in terms of people voting and electing a government after some interval. d) Opportunities of participation and complex nature of governance: Running a government has become quite complex in modern times. Scope of public affairs is quite vast. Even if we are taking decisions about a small town, it involves many complicated rules and details regarding procedures. Therefore, it is not possible for citizens to spare time from their daily routine for politics. The nature of government is complex, involving complicated and technical rules. It is, therefore, not possible for the common people to participate in the decision-making process. Political parties do undertake campaigns to enroll members and involve them in party work. A number of organisations do organise public meetings and rallies. In spite of this, participation of people, in most cases, is limited to voting.

Pooja Bhonsale St Mary’s High School, Dahisar POLITICAL SCIENCE - 4 3] Challenge of inequality a) Social inequality: All societies entertain some notions of superiority and inferiority. In India this division is based on caste. In the US, this is done on the basis of colour. All societies also have such divisions between women and men and between poor and rich. When society is thus divided on the assumption of superiority or inferiority of one group, it is called inequality. Social and economic inequality exists in every society. Every society is divided into superior and subordinates, rich and poor, men and women. This division in India is based on caste and in the US on
the basis of colour. This inequality results into domination of the backward groups by the advanced group, of women by men. The exploited backward groups have grievances. They will lose faith in democracy if their problems are not solved. Democratic system cannot function meaningfully in unequal society. Special efforts are necessary to bring about social equality. It is necessary to give them adequate share of power. It is necessary to ensure their progress whereby the gap between the advanced and backward group is bridged. Economic inequality: Economic inequality implies division of society into rich and poor classes. Poverty and unemployment are major challenges before democracy. The objective of democracy should be to ensure the well-being of all citizens. Tackling poverty is a challenge before democracy in underdeveloped countries like India because democracy cannot survive in a situation of extreme poverty. Regional inequality: Regional inequality means that some regions are more developed and some are less developed. People from the backward regions tend to migrate to more developed regions to earn the means of livelihood. The migration of population results in a strain on amenities in the big cities like Mumbai. Differences arise between the natives and outsiders, leading to social tensions. Backward regions have a grievance that their development is neglected. This misgiving threatens democracy as well as national unity. Regional inequality is a challenge before democracy. To tackle this challenge, government should ensure balanced development of all regions, provide them with an adequate share of resources and power. The democratic way is the most effective way to tackle this issue.
Conclusion: 1) Having democracy by itself is not enough to solve/tackle all challenges. Issues can be solved with the co-operation/participation of people. In spite of its weakness, democracy has capability to tackle the challenges before it. Issues need to be resolved in a democratic manner in democracy. All problems have to be tackled on the basis of law, preservation of personal liberty and tolerance. Democracy has to protect public interest. Politics must be public well being oriented. True democracy means developing a mechanism for democratically protecting the well being of the entire society. There are no readymade solutions. However, we can learn from other’s experiences.
Some questions: Q1
Explain how economic inequality is a challenge before democracy. (25 to 30 words)
Ans. 1) Economic inequality too is a challenge before democracy. In a society having poverty and unemployment, democracy experiences limitations. 2) The objective of democracy is to achieve the wellbeing of all citizens so democracy has to take the responsibility to reduce poverty and make all basic amenities available to the poor. Poliicies need to be decided accordingly. 3) In situations of extreme poverty, democracy remains only in name or it is endangered due to social rebellion.
ADC copies are available at Saphale, Palghar, Boisar, Dahanu, Vapi, Silvassa, Daman
Also at Alibaug & Uran
Q.2) Explain the dual nature of the questions before democracy. Ans. 1) The issues are expected to be resolved in a democratic manner. They are expected to be resolved according to the due process of law and by maintaining personal liberty. 2) However, there are differences among the citizens in every society. There is competition among different sections. The conflicting interests need to be balanced. Q3) Write the challenges related to personal liberty. Ans. National security is regarded as more important than personal liberty. This leads to curtailment of personal liberty. 2) Tackling organised crime and terrorism also result in curtailment of personal liberty. Q.4 What is regional inequality? Ans. In many countries, some regions are more developed than other regions and some are less developed. This is described as regional inequality.

There’s dubstep, rock and the blues. And then, there are band fanatics, hippies and hipsters. Music has genres and so do the fans. Priyanka Singh & Dev Goswami tell you who you are most likely to run into at the next music festival you attend >> Saw a group at the music festival with bandanas on their foreheads, wearing loose clothes, lugging a guitar around and being carefully unkempt? You’ve spotted a group of hippies!
I
t’s raining music festivals in India and we can hardly complain. The coming months will see a bevy of music festivals queued up, with an impressive lineup of Indian as well as international artists. Multiple visits to these festivals made us stumble upon some repeated observations. The way music has numerous genres, a music festival has different types of attendees too. The name, lineup and venue of the event may change, but this frequently found, distinctive diversity of attendees is present at most music festivals. We tell you about the common types of festival-goers that you’ll see at any large scale, multi-genre music gathering and their peculiarities. In fact, one of them might be you!
the hiPPie Most female hippies wear so much kohl that by the end of the festival, you’ll know what a human raccoon would look like. They wear flowy outfits, which are sparse in a bohemian, carefree way and their look screams pained nonchalance that has been assembled with precision. Oh, the irony! They will have feathers in their hair, a beaded or flower headband and at least one piercing on a not-so-trite piercing spot. Lately, the humble bindi has started making an appearance in the hippie circuit too. Hippie men will most likely have dreadlocks or long hair and an enviable five-o-clock shadow. Die-hard hippies also sport an edgy bandana around their forehead, lugging a guitar around with them. Also, don’t forget about the John Lennon glasses! spot point Mostly at the reggae stages, but they veer towards electronic artists as well. Most likely to say “I love grass.”

the hiPster And the award for the most overused term of the last five years goes to ‘Hipster!’ Hipster has been wrongly used so much that the essence of the word is now muddled beyond repair. In fact, if you Google the word, the prima facie definition that pops up is ‘a person who follows the latest trends and fashions.’ To put it simply, hipsters are people who value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence and witty banter. Without dwelling too much upon the history of hipsters, we’ll tell you what a contemporary hipster (pseudo-hipster, in several cases) looks like. They use organic products, might look like endorsers of Fabindia, throw around names of bands and authors that you have never heard of and will often sport large spectacles (irrespective of having an optical number or not). Starting from tonight and continuing till the first week of December, blueFROG has a killer performance lineup for music fanatics in the city. >> House of Tales gives you the chance to create an experience that is exclusive and personalised
o you want a space where you can tell your own story, create your own memories or have something that’s yours and yours alone, away from the chaos of the city? It’s hard to find empty space in Mumbai — but I think I just did. When I walk into a store for a review, I’m used to being hit by a number of products and a line of shop assistants. So, it was strange to walk into House of Tales and see mostly empty space. Don’t get me wrong — this is a good thing. In Mumbai, event spaces have just started gaining popularity and I think they deserve more room in a city already struggling for some. House of Tales is located at Kala Ghoda, which, although hot and happening, seems like a strange area to open an empty space in. After all, there are galleries, restaurants, cafés, stores — what more could people need? Well, if you want to host your own event, this is the place to be. Now, if you look beyond the prettily decorated bathrooms (with storybook themes that you absolutely have to check out), decently high ceilings, impressive tiles and clean sweep layout, House of Tales is literally just empty space. What we do love about it however, is that it’s not just tiled and left there. Owner Neha is quite convincing and you’ll leave with an idea for your own event, simply so that you can use the space. When we visited, there was a pop-up exhibition getting set-up and we could tell that it was a large enough space for every need. House of Tales can’t do much for you if you’re a casual shopper. But, if you want to host a party, dinner (they have and can obtain additional food and drink licenses for the same), have a meeting or showcase your work — go ahead and book it. If you’re planning an event, Neha will help draw in a crowd too! They also provide support services including catering, photographers, marketing, valets and will flesh out your idea to create an event. Check out their website, www.houseoftales.org to find out what events they have lined up or to make a booking yourself.

new launches: find out what’s just out
Fashion retail websites are a dime-a-dozen today. Shirley Mistry finds out what sets Stylista.com apart
I
>> We love the ‘Summer Loving’ maxi dress by Wendell Rodricks, priced at `2,950
f you’ve ever wanted to shop for designer clothes without having to drop little velvet bags of gold down in exchange, you’re going to be rather pleased. At Stylista.com, the aim is to make high-end clothes affordable. With all their collections retailing under `5,000, I’d say they’re off to a brilliant start. The collaborative fashion store stocks clothes that have been specially created for Stylista by designers. The first lot includes attire from Wendell Rodricks, Priyadarshini Rao, Nishka Lulla, Yogesh Chaudhary, Tanya Sharma and Rinku Dalamal, apart from their in-house line — Stylista Private Label. The products are divided on the basis of what you are looking for and include tops, pants and dresses, stocked under different designers (making it easy to see everything that one designer has to offer) and on the basis of collections. With categories such as Style Steals and Daytime Chic, it makes browsing an absolute breeze. The Counting Stars tunic by Nishka Lulla at `1,950 and the
Hey Shortie crop top by Yogesh Chaudhary are cute tops to wear on a casual day out, as is the Summer Loving maxi by Wendell Rodricks, priced at `2,950. For a more formal, glamourous dress, Dancing Queen by Rinku Dalmia, at `3,450, is perfect. While most of the designers retailing on the website impress, we love the Stylista Private Label. Their Chevron Party Dress (`2,750) and the Super Sequins shorts (`2,950) instantly stand out. They also have plenty of palazzos, skirts and basic shirts. The Splatter Me Silly dress, at `3,250, tops my wishlist. With their Be a Stylista initiative, customers can vote for styles that they like. The minute a style receives a certain number of votes, it goes into production. “We’re constantly looking to push the envelope when it comes to customer experiences,” says Avnish Chhabria, founder and CEO of Stylista.com. With a promise to have more designers on board soon, I for one, know where the better part of my pay-cheque is going.

ocated in plant no. 3 of Godrej’s Business District in Vikhroli, Green Zone is a food kiosk, similar to the ones that malls have, situated in Pauze, the Godrej Food Court. Pauze, if it was not branded as a food court, would not strike you as one, as its décor is that of a sleek café, dominated by whites and off-whites, which make you forget that it is situated in a business district. Green Zone is a vegetarian fast food outlet that aims to provide quick, but delicious and healthy meals. The word healthy made us think that the menu would be dominated by salads and other dishes fit for diet conscious people, but surprisingly, that wasn’t the case. Green Zone will offer you what most vegetarians love to eat — dishes such as Chhole Bhature, Aloo Parathas and variations of grilled cheese sandwiches — all clearly not healthy. They offer chaat, French fries, sandwiches, street food (such as pav bhaji and samosas), parathas, Indian and Chinese meal combos and desserts. We started with Papdi Chaat (`70), which was hygienic and delicious. We then ordered a vegetarian favourite, Chhole Bhature (`140) and Methi Paratha (`155), which are a part of the paratha meal. Of the many north Indian food places that we have visited, this was one the most memorable chhole dishes

own House Café (THC) is all about relaxing after a long day of work or grabbing a comforting dinner. This is evident, not in their name or in the manager’s answer to the question ‘What is THC all about?’, but in their simple, pleasing wooden décor and extremely comfortable seating. THC has two sections — the lower level serves as a café, offering coffee, tea and snacks, while the upper level houses the bar. Popular pop and classic rock tunes play in the background and overall, the place has a very comforting vibe to it. We chose to sit in the bar area and looked through their menu, which offers a large variety of brands of alcohol with classic cocktails and a few unique concoctions. We decided to sip on Jealous Eve (`425), Tropical Mojito (`450), Pomegranate Martini (`450) and Orange & Basil Margarita (`450) while we decided what to eat. The drinks were amazing to say the least. They aren’t the most potent drinks you’ll have, but the delightful taste more than makes up for it.
The refreshing martini and mojito, make for perfect after-work drinks, while the margarita was well-made and exactly as you would expect it to be. However, it was the Jealous Eve that had me going ga-ga. It had a wonderful, sweet-sour taste of green apple and cinnamon, with a strong hit of vodka; a must-try indeed. By the time we had a few sips of our drinks, our starters, Halloumi Crostini (`345), Batatas Bravas (`225), Grilled Prawns (`425) and Grilled Chicken Skewers (`275) arrived. The Grilled Prawns were quite good, with a strong garlic flavour, while the Halloumi Crostini is just the dish you want to begin your meal with — crispy bread with grilled cheese and salsa — yum! The Grilled Chicken Skewers, which looked quite normal, turned out to be anything but run-off-themill. The chef used spices from Moorish cuisine to lend the chicken a flavour that I haven’t tasted anywhere else. It is a wonderful dish that you should not miss trying out. Surprisingly, it was the vegetarian
dish that stood out among the starters. The Bravas had deliciously crisp potatoes, lightly coated with spicy tomato sauce and served with garlic mayonnaise. Every element complemented the other perfectly to result in a brilliant dish. For mains, we opted for the Scallion Crepes (`375) and Oven Roasted Red Snapper (`455). The former was a creamy dish with juicy mushrooms. The addition of pepper sauce helped make it a tasty dish. But, it was the snapper that had us going crazy. The delightfully soft fish was subtly spiced and cooked in a light parsley and dill sauce. The fish was the star of the dish with its the juicy, meaty flavour. This is the dish that I would come back to THC for. Overall, THC was a great experience. From start to finish, there was not one fault that I could point out. The décor is relaxing, food is comforting and drinks are interesting. From a quick drink to a three-course dinner, THC is suitable for everyone and your night there won’t end in disappointment.
that I’ve ever eaten. The gravy was thick, delicious and as expected, heavy. Served with two large bhaturas, the meal is more than enough for one. The Methi Paratha will be popular with the health conscious, as it is made without any oil. They source their desserts from another shop and we were impressed with options such as Phirni, Basundi, Kheer and even Honey Crisp Noodles with ice cream on the menu, as you seldom see these making an appearance, especially in a food court based kiosk. We opted for a brownie (`120) and kulfi (`70). The brownie was soft, with hints of white chocolate in it and the kulfi was just creamy enough. In a nutshell, if you are a vegetarian and love staple north Indian delights, this outlet will impress your taste buds and your wallet. If you are in the vicinity and want to grab a quick but yummy meal in a pleasant environment, Green Zone will make you a happy customer. >> Sasan Gir is known for its pristine greenery, coupled with bursts of colour and sightings of exquisite animals. Make sure you have a camera handy to capture the beauty around you
WILD THINGS!
Gir forest in Gujarat is the only home to the Asiatic lion in the sub-continent and is the perfect holiday destination for families, friends, naturalists and nature lovers. Claudelle Monis tells us more >> Visit the lush Gir forest for some peace, quiet and fresh air, with a good sprinkling of adventure
he quiet hamlet of Sasan in Gujarat could be mistaken for any other far-flung village across the country, with a less than perfect road winding through it, the familiar sight of children playing out in the open and women walking down to the river to carry out their daily chores. The presence of cattle, a sea of greenery, a lazy river and the air of absolute relaxation puts you in holiday mood immediately, leaving you with little option but to sit back and relax. But, that’s not all this quiet destination has to offer its visitors. Few know that Sasan is a part of Gir Forest — the last remaining natural habitat of the Asiatic lion, allowing you to experience a rustic lifestyle coupled with a little adventure. Spread over approximately 1,882km, Gir Forest comprises of a sanctuary, a national park and a buffer zone of forest area. Its variety of fauna has made it a home not only to several wild animals, but also to a variety of birds, reptiles and insects — including some rare species. Its unique ecosystem has ensured a steady stream of visitors, ranging from naturalists and nature lovers to families and individuals looking for some peace, quiet and fresh air. As a result, travellers find no dearth of hotels, motels or inns to check into. Cashing in on the popularity of this region, several luxury, mid-end and budget properties have sprouted within the radius of Gir Forest, leaving travellers spoilt for choice. For those looking for a comfortable and luxurious getaway, five star properties such as The Gateway Hotel (part of the Taj group) and The Fern are ideal choices. For those who want to experience the great outdoors, The Gir Forest Resort offers you A/C and non-A/C tents, so you can complement comfort with adventure. For those operating on a tight budget, who require a room only to rest, there are various lodges and motels offering accommodation from `3,000 onwards. Once you’ve settled in, don’t let laziness kick in. Put on a sturdy pair of walking shoes and take a stroll along the river early in the evening. You’ll spot a variety of birds flying home and butterflies of all colours,
flitting from flower to flower. If you’re a photography enthusiast, a morning walk would be better, because the right light and animal sightings can give you some marvellous shots. The safari is the highlight of the trip, so make sure you plan your holiday when the sanctuary is open. Gir Sanctuary is closed from June 16 to October 15 on account of the monsoon. However, travellers visiting the forest during this period will not be completely disappointed since a ‘mini-safari’ is conducted within Devaliya Park, which is home to several animals including the lion, Sambar, Nilagi and Chinkara. The good part about this mini-safari is that there will be assured animal and bird sightings, which cannot be guaranteed in the sanctuary. Devaliya Park is open from 9am to 11am and again, from 3pm to 5pm. However, the animals tend to be more active in the morning, so taking the safari before 11am is recommended, particularly if you want good photographs. This safari is not more than 45 minutes long, but it is not a rushed process. The bus drivers give you ample time to get good shots of the wildlife before moving on. However, keeping your camera ready assures you of faster and possibly, more candid pictures of the wildlife. You can also visit the little gift shop at the drop-off point in the park to buy a souvenir or two before returning to your hotel. An important thing to remember while you live and travel through Sasan Gir is to maintain its cleanliness. While littering may be overlooked across India, the officials and villagers of Sasan Gir do not take it lightly. If you throw away a wrapper, container or even a plastic bag, there’s a good chance a villager will stop you and ask you to pick it up, even if you’re in a vehicle. Also, plastic and nondegradable materials thrown around might choke an animal if they eat it accidentally. So, skip your international holiday and visit the lush Gir Forest to get the taste of a side of India that’s often ignored. You’ll most definitely take back some of the peace, quiet, fresh air and solitude of this heaven on earth, back home.

Markets Indecisive, But…
NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (November 29, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose moderately on Thursday (November 28, 2013) a net 34.75 points (0.57%) and closed at the 6091 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 6092 points level. It then rose further and registered the day’s high at the 6112 points level at 10.00 a.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.38 p.m. It then declined sharply and registered the day’s low at the 6068 points level at 2.56 p.m. The index then rose and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session and moved in a range of 45 points. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 46 were gainers, while just 4 stocks closed in the red. All the sectoral indices barring FMCG closed in the green. Substantial buying was seen in capital goods, realty and power stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 55.67%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 813 were gainers, 548 were losers and 73 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).
RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is turned flat (positive if it rises). It is below its 9-day Average (negative). ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line but both lines are converging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5921 points level. The next support is at the 5834 points level. Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 6217 points level. The next resistance is at the 6357 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6091 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6069. Support (2) = 6046. Resistance (1) = 6114. Resistance (2) = 6136. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index has crossed above its 15 days moving average. The index is now above the 5, 15 and 200 days moving averages. Further, the velocity parameters which were neutrally trended are now turning positive. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Technically, since the downwards risk seems to have reduced, Investors may consider buying in small quantities in shares that are fundamentally sound and have a long- term potential.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 6063) Positive. Is below its 15-day average (at 6086) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 6143) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 5866) Positive.
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Gold Jewellery Exports Likely To Dip 50% In FY14 By A Business Reporter
G
old jewellery exports may decline by about 50 % in this financial year from last year after government restrictions reduced the availability of raw material, Gitanjali Gems Chairman and Managing Director Mehul Choksi said yesterday. Gold jewellery exports were Rs 1,293 crore in 2012-13, according to the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. “There are fewer stocks available in the market and the premium is as high as 8-10 % in the domestic market. This will give rise to smuggling. Very little gold is available for ex-
ports, Choksi said. “Exports have declined by 55 % since the last seven months. We are expecting an overall about 50 % decline in gold jewellery exports this financial year, Choksi told reporters on the sidelines of the Mumbai Jewellery and Gems Fair 2013 organised by UBM India and FICCI. Choksi said Indian demand for gold jewellery is shifting to the Middle East due to competitive prices. Gitanjali Export Corporation CEO Sanjeev Agarwal said local gold prices are high, even as prices overseas drop. In Dubai, gold is 21 % cheaper than in India, making the city an attractive destination to buy
the metal, he added. “There are reports that about half tonne of gold is coming into India from Dubai. The Middle Eastern region, along with China and Thailand, are also emerging as alternative manufacturing bases. Many big players have already shifted their bases to these locations to feed the export market, he said. All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) Chairman Haresh Soni said NRIs are also buying from outside India. “The domestic market is affected by the lower availability of stocks. Even NRI demand is getting diverted to other countries like the neighbouring countries and Dubai, he added.
Infrastructure, Banking Need Rs.10.4 Trillion Bond Funding Regulatory support critical to meet this challenge in the next 5 years By A Business Reporter
I
BUSINESS
ndia’s infrastructure and banking sectors will require Rs.10.4 trillion from the bond market over the next 5 years, CRISIL said at its second annual bond market seminar held yesterday. To facilitate this, greater regulatory focus is required in three areas – deepening of the bond market, developing innovative creditenhancement mechanisms for infrastructure projects, and building investor appetite for banks’ non-equity capital. CRISIL also released its first ‘Yearbook on the Indian Debt Market – 2013’, a comprehensive, one-of-itskind publication, at the seminar. According to the yearbook, the Indian bond market has witnessed sizeable growth in issuances and increasing participation by issuers and investors. Encouragingly, there have been several innovations in the bond market during 2013, including the first 50-year rupee bond and the first inflation-indexed debentures by Indian companies, five Basel III compliant issues by banks, and the launch of two infrastructure debt funds. It is imperative to build on this foundation of growth and innovation to meet the sizeable funding re-
quirements of the country’s infrastructure and banking sectors. Says Ms. Roopa Kudva, Managing Director and CEO, CRISIL: “The Rs.10.4 trillion bond funding required for these two sectors translates to an average issuance of Rs.2.1 trillion annually in each of the next five years. This is nearly 60% higher than the average annual issuances made by these sectors in the last three years. This calls for steps to deepen the bond market by encouraging greater foreign participation, and by liberalising investment norms for long-term investors. The Indian infrastructure sector alone will need Rs.7 trillion from the bond market over the next five years. Currently, bond market finances the infrastructure sector indirectly through specialised institutions. Says Mr. Pawan Agrawal, Senior Director, CRISIL Ratings: “In 2012-13, just five financial institutions issued nearly 60% of the (Rs.1.3 trillion) bonds raised to fund infrastructure. Therefore, encouraging direct access of infrastructure projects to bond market is a key priority. This can be achieved by a strong regulatory and policy focus on developing innovative credit-enhanced structures, allowing banks to provide credit enhancement and facilitating the
scale-up of infrastructure debt funds (IDFs). CRISIL has recently rated the two IDFs set up as non-banking financial companies.

The panel has submitted its recommendations to Sebi), based on which a final report is being prepared.

The company raised Rs 190.
Pharma Sector To Create More Jobs In 2014
Indian as well as multinational pharmaceutical companies are likely to create more jobs in 2014 on the back of expected double digit growth in the key sector, according to industry experts. The pharma industry in India has clocked double digit growth rate (about 14 per cent) in the last five years and this is expected to continue in 2014 too. Several multinational firms operate in this space, which has great scope for hiring and job creation, they said at a human resource organised by the Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) yesterday.
Triumph Enters India, Launches 10 Models

The company, which has set up a whollyowned subsidiary in the country, will start delivering its bikes from January next year and aims to sell around 500 units in the first six months.
Audi To Hike Prices By Up To 5% From Jan
German luxury car maker Audi has said it will increase prices across the range of models in India by up to 5 per cent citing pressure on its business due to economic factors. The increase in prices across model range available in India would range from 3-5 per cent, effective January 1, 2014.
Germany To Work Closely With The Indian Travel Trade
The German National Tourist Office concluded its 3 city road show in the cities of New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai yesterday and claimed that it witnessed great enthusiasm from the travel trade. Romit Theophilus, Director Sales & Marketing, said “we are grateful to our partners for providing constant support throughout the year. This year we have few new partners on board and we look forward to have a long association with them in future as well. We plan to have one GNTO road show every year. With regards to the current economic scenario, he said: “although there has been economic uncertainty which has been prevailing and devaluation of the rupee, which has affected Indian outbound. Germany has still been receiving a fair amount of travellers. We have witnessed 402,440 overnights from January-August, 2013. — Business Desk with inputs from PTI

EW DELHI: Managing Editor of Tehelka, Shoma Chaudhury resigned yesterday a week after its Editor Tarun Tejpal was exposed as having allegedly sexually assaulted a woman journalist colleague. Chaudhury’s resignation early this morning comes amid speculation that she may also be named in the FIR for certain acts of commission and omission after the alleged offence became public. “Over the past week, I have been accused of an attempt to cover-up and for not standing by my feminist positions. While I accept that I could have done many things differently and in a more measured way, I reject the allegations of a cover-up because in no way could the first actions that were taken be deemed suppression of any kind,” said Chaudhary.

For some time, they make appearances at parties, bag a role or two, an occasional item number or friendly appearance. Next step, maybe regional films or maybe the artistic respectability of theatre. It’s even worse if the actor Deepa Gahlot happens to be an industry Public memory being what it kid—then watching others is, they stare at him with a climb the ladder of success ‘haven’t we see you before’ can be even more humiliatexpression, when he strides ing. Shahid Kapoor in Kaminey Yesterday’s A-Lister could be back to struggle stage with a few bad choices—this time
the struggle is not to get in the door, but to stay in the room. Just two recent examples of stars who have everything but a monster hit are Shahid Kapoor and Imran Khan. When Shahid did offmainstream films like Kaminey and Imran did Delhi Belly, they got a lot of acclaim and awards nominations, but when the former took up a surefire Rajkumar Santoshi film Phata Poster Nikla Hero and the latter did a failure-proof Dharma production Gori Tere Pyaar Main, they realised that the box-office can be brutally unpredictable, and neither has reached the level of popularity of success where a flop or two doesn’t matter – like Ranbir Kapoor managed to survive Besharam without a dent in his stardom. Very few stars who have slid down to the bottom, have been able to claw back up again. They become that photo in the paper—the ‘who’s that guy?’ has-been.
Saif’s the honest goon in ‘Bullet Raja’! Saif Ali Khan is on a career high with the success of ‘Agent Vinod’, ‘Race1-2’, et al, and now his most important act in the forthcoming Tigmanshu Dhulia film ‘Bullet Raja’ releases today. The ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi had a candid chat with the Pataudi scion about the film. Here is what Saif said. The style of directors with whom you have worked earlier before and Tigmanshu Dhulia’s style is completely different. How did you agree to do his film? I had seen Tigmanshu’s film ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ and liked it a lot. I thought that if he approached me I would love to work with him and as if telepathically, he sent me across the script of ‘Bullet Raja’. I readily accepted the film as I liked my character in the film. What is your character in the film?
I play an educated high caste Brahmin boy called Raja Mishra and in the course of helping others he goes to jail. When he comes out he earns the sobriquet ‘Bullet Raja’, who fears no one and fights the bad guys elements in society.
The film is shot in Lucknow where the Nawabs are famous for their richness and lavish lifestyle. You also are a nawab. How different did you find the Lucknowi nawabs? We were nawabs of Pataudi which was not a big princely kingdom and didn’t have many riches. My dad had to play international cricket to survive. Though we had the passion for hunting and nothing else. The nawabs of Lucknow though had many hobbies.

The number of songs coming his way may have reduced but his fans have not. We managed to get hold of Udit in a chatty mood. Excerpts: Rajesh V. Gaur & Suneel V. Gaur
Please tell us about your days of struggle. My struggle started in Bihar when I was six. My elder brother would carry me on his shoulders to the fairs in different villages. I used to sing in those fairs. In appreciation, I would get a garland made of currency notes, which would be Rs 11. From Bihar I went to Kathmandu, where I joined Radio Nepal. I sang songs for nine years in Nepal. My goal was to sing for Hindi films so I came to Mumbai.
the important factors for success.
You have sung for practically all the lead stars. Do you make a conscious effort to change voice or style to match them? If I know the actor I am singing for, yes I do. I would sing a song differently if it was for Shah Rukh, than for Aamir.
You are singing a lot of Bhojpuri songs. Why don’t we hear more of your songs in Hindi these days? You are a singer with When Kishoreda arrived on the an original voice. Who scene, everyone said Rafi had become outdated. But he was still is your idol? I admire singers like Kishore singing despite the setbacks. If such da and Mohd Rafi. I am their great names had to face a slump, I fan. But fortunately I didn’t am nobody. But even after 25 years end up imitating the legends. I am still around and that’s a nice feeling. ‘Mere gaane kam ho gaye, Would you say the Par main gayab nahin hua (My work singers of today have has reduced, but I am still around).’ failed to make a lasting impression on the minds of Your songs were a part of Shah Rukh, Aamir and the listener? Kishoreda lasted for 40 years, I have Salman’s biggest hits. Now been singing for 25. This is the they have switched over to biggest challenge for the current lot. new singers? I am not saying they aren’t talented, They are all experimenting with their but they might not last so long. Total roles, so maybe they feel it is time to dedication, hard work and luck are move on to fresher voices.
Do you feel that films are being made for a multiplex audience? Yes. To a certain extent multiplexes have an audience for the intelligent cineaste but films like ‘Grand Masti’ and ‘Shuudh Desi Romance’ are also made and they have an audience too and why should such films not be made? How long can the audiences watch sex comedies or very serious films?
What next? I have a Sajid Ali Khan film called ‘Humshakals’, one film with Phantom and a film called ‘Happy Ending’.
How about film direction? I am contemplating it but cannot say anything now.

this awesome offer to make my debut opposite Sunny Deol in ‘Singh Saab.’ directed by Anil Sharma cropped up. But I guess, it was destined that way. Fortunately, I had frequently dabbled in dramatics even as a little school kid. So I had no inhibitions as such, of performing naturally in the presence of a large group,” shrugs the ravishing Rautela. Far from being jittery, the otherwise reserved 19-year-old Urvashi seemed
chilled out as she faced bashful senior co-actor Sunny despite their big age difference. With a mild blush, Urvashi opens up. “Of course, I was in awe of Sunnyji having seen most of his movies, especially ‘Gadar-Ek Prem Katha’ directed by the seasoned Anilji who was the one who selected me for ‘Singh Saab…’ But since I have been a prolific model and classical dancer and participated and won in various beauty pag-

We both share this love for sporty games, so we easily struck a buddy rapport.” “Having won several prestigious beauty pageant titles, including the ‘Miss Tourism Queen’, my mission now is to win the ‘awesome actress’ title,” she signs off.

UMBAI: Recently-retired batting legend Sachin Tendulkar became UNICEF's first brand ambassador for South Asia and is all set to work in promoting hygiene and sanitation in the region. "Thanks for allowing me to start this wonderful second innings of my life. I'm looking forward to being an ambassador for UNICEF and serve to the best of my ability. This is an innings that is really really important to me, so I will try my best," said Tendulkar. The batting icon, who has been involved with the global organisation for the last 8-10 years, was today named its ambassador for South Asia region for two years. Tendulkar said it was hard to digest that many people around the world did not have access to clean toilets. "I was surprised to know that 36 per cent of the world population don't have access to safe and clean toilets. In today's day and age to think about this basic facility not being available to a common man, it is really difficult to digest," he said. "If a person defecates in the open and goes back home and that happens to be a mother, because in most of the family it is the mother who runs the house. She is the one who is cooking food for all the family members, she is the one who is feeding the baby with her own hands because that is the attachment and a bond that any mother and child would share. And if the hands are not washed with soap, can you imagine the result. It can actually take away the child's life. For an adult's negligence, a child cannot lose its life," he added. The 40-year old said he was baffled by the statistics on the high number of children dying due to lack of proper hygiene. "Also another statistics which baffles me and I was disheartened to know was that 1600 children die everyday because of diarrhoeal infected diseases. I just want to help UNICEF to make more people aware of this initiative that I am part of. It is as simple as washing your hands with soap," he said. Tendulkar said he would achieve something in his second innings if he was able to bring down the number of child mortality due to diarrhoea related diseases. "The numbers I spoke about, my only wish is if we could bring those astronomical numbers as low as possible then we would have achieved something. I can speak for myself that I would have achieved something post my cricketing years. The second innings of my life that I am playing along with UNICEF is really important and it means a lot to me," he said. Recalling his childhood days, Tendulkar said there were times when he didn't bother to wash his hands after playing. "There was a stage where I would play downstairs with my friends, cricket with tennis ball, and occasionally didn't bother washing my hands, and wanting to eat after coming back home. My mother made sure that I washed my hands properly and ate with clean hands," he said.
Hong Kong, Netherlands claim final two spots at World T20
ABU DHABI: Hong Kong overcame a disastrous start to beat Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 29 runs at the Zayed Cricket Stadium here today to secure a historic berth in the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014. Completing the line-up was the Netherlands which defeated Scotland by eight wickets with 13 balls to spare, following Wesley Barresi's 75 not out, Ben Cooper's 40 and Michael Swart's 30 not out. With captain Jamie Atkinson watching from the sidelines due to a broken thumb, Hong Kong recovered from 19 for four inside four overs to post 137 for nine. Munir Dar then struck with three for 26 and Haseeb Amjad bagged two for 18 as Hong Kong bowled out PNG for 108 with five balls remaining. Like Nepal, Hong Kong will be making a maiden appearance at the global stage when it will arrive in Bangladesh in March 2014 where the West Indies will defend its men's title and Australia will defend its women's title.

TENDULKAR TO PROMOTE
SANITATION, HYGIENE Stop praising Tendulkar: Taliban to Pak media
ISLAMABAD: The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has asked Pakistani media groups to refrain from praising Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar. In a video message, Taliban spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid, flanked by two AK-47 wielding masked men, talks about Sachin's farewell to international cricket. "There is this Indian cricket player Sachin Tendulkar. It was unfortunate to see Pakistani media go to great extent to pay tribute to him," Shahid said in the video message. "On the other hand, it was sad to know same Pakistani media badly criticise captain Misbah-ul-Haq. No matter how good Tendulkar is, don't praise him because he is Indian. No matter how bad Misbah-ul-Haq plays, he should be praised because he is a Pakistani," the video shows the Taliban spokesperson as saying. The Pakistan media had extensively covered Tendulkar and his farewell speech was covered live. Pakistan media praised Tendulkar after he retired from the game on
November 16. Newspapers paid rich tributes to Sachin saying "the game of cricket will surely be the poorer without him". Dawn wrote Tendulakar's retirement marks the end of a truly memorable career that spanned nearly a quarter of a century. Rated by critics and contemporaries as arguably the greatest postwar batsman to have played the game, Tendulkar continued to rewrite the record book, it had said. The Express Tribune and Daily Times wrote Tendulkar is rightly considered the most complete batsman of his age, possessing every shot in the book and having the ability to both, tear apart bowling attacks and to control his natural aggression to suit the needs of his team. Insaaf, an Urdu daily, wrote Tendulkar like cricketers are not born every day. His is widely loved and respected. His fans must be sad as "cricket without him is surely the poorer."
Tendulkar, who was also earlier part of the UNICEF campaigns for polio and global hand washing, said, "Hand wash according to me with soap is like vaccine which can prevent a lot of diseases. Basically, by not washing your hands after defecation allows a person to carry germs back home. It causes lot of harm to your health. Many diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, worms, infect many diseases related to respiratory are caused because of our negligence." The batting icon, who had interacted with kids for the hand wash campaign, said he was looking forward to meet more children through this new role. "Not just I was part of spreading the message but also to spend time with children and educate them about hygiene; how important it is to lead life the way it is meant to be, is lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed doing that. I am looking forward to sharing such moments with a number of children."

UMBAI: Delhi’s Rashid Khan fired a second straight six-under64 to take the lead in round two of the CG Open 2013 being played at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Mumbai. Rashid thus took his two-day total to 12-under-128. Chikkarangappa S of Bangalore shot a five-under-65 to be placed one shot behind Rashid in second place. Rolex Rankings leader Rashid Khan (64-64) produced the best round of the day to climb from overnight tied second to the top of the leaderboard. Rashid, the runner-up at last year’s CG Open, boosted his chances of a title triumph this time around with the help of two eagles and four birdies against two bogeys. The 22-year-old Khan followed up his birdie on the third with an eagle conversion from 20 feet on the fourth. Between two bogeys on the seventh and 12th, Rashid salvaged a birdie on the ninth, thanks to an outstanding approach shot from 175 yards that stopped a few inches from the cup. The wiry golfer picked up a shot on the 15th after once again landing it within a foot. He finished in high spirits after collecting another birdie on the 16thand converting a sevenfooter for his second eagle of the day on the par-5 18th. “My hitting has been spot-on so far. I picked up three strokes early on and then just dropped a couple of strokes in the middle stages. However, I came back well on the last four holes. It was great to finish the day with

an eagle. I made the par-5 holes count as I made both my eagles on the par-5s and also picked up a birdie on the par-5 16th,” said Rashid. Chikkarangappa S (64-65), who was overnight tied second, posted a 65 on Thursday that placed him lone second at 11-under129 and kept him in the contest. The rookie started his day in spectacular fashion with a 15-feet eagle conversion on the first. Chikka then had a hat-trick of birdies from the third to the fifth before hitting a rough patch over the next nine holes that consisted of four bogeys. He finally produced an amazing run of four consecutive birdies from the 15th through the 18th. Chikka said, “My focus was on the par-5s and I managed to capitalize on all of them. I made an eagle and three birdies on the four par-5s. The best shot of the day came on the par-3 17th where I missed a hole-in-one by just three inches. I also converted three putts from a range of 15 to 20 feet. I would look to hit maximum fairways and regulations over the next two rounds in order to stay in the hunt.” Abhijit Singh Chadha (66-66) of Chandigarh and Abhishek Jha (66-66) of Bangalore are three shots behind Chikkarangappa in joint third place. Kolkata’s Shankar Das (6866) lies fifth at six-under-134. Panchkula’s Angad Cheema, the overnight leader, slipped to tied 19th place after shooting a 75 that took his total score to two-under-138. IN BRIEF Nine players share lead
M
UMBAI: Seasoned opener Wasim Jaffer cracked his 50th century in first class cricket to rally champions Mumbai from a difficult situation on day one of their Ranji Trophy Group A clash against fellow-state rivals Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium. The lanky Jaffer remained unbeaten on 133 at stumps after batting right thorough the day and guiding the 40-time champions from a precarious 39 for 3 to a close of play first innings total of 254 for 8. The 35-year-old former India batsman showed immense patience and tenacity even as wickets fell from the other end. But for his 393-minute vigil, the hosts, who were asked to take first strike, would have folded up for a meagre score. There were only two significant partnerships for Mumbai, who were rocked by the initial threewicket burst by medium pacer Sandeep Singh whose victims included South Africa-bound Ajinkya Rahane who was caught in the slip cordon for one run. Jaffer, who faced 261 balls and struck 13 fours and a six to remain unconquered with tailender Vishal Dabholkar (0), put on 64 runs for the fourth wicket in 98 balls with Abhishek Nayar (27) before the latter was bowled round his legs by off spinner Akshay Wakhre who grabbed 2 for 65. Later the opener added 58 in 111 balls with Shardul Thakur (26) who was one of three victims snapped up by Rajasthan-born Vidarbha left arm spinner Ravi Jangid. It was Jaffer's 34th hundred in Ranji Trophy and his tally of 50 hundreds in first class cricket includes five in Tests. Vidarbha opted for the second new ball towards close after 87

overs but neither South Africabound Umesh Yadav, who went wicketless after six spells, nor Sandeep Singh could break through the ninth wicket stand which was worth 27 runs. Yadav bowled six overs in his first spell and then was used in short bursts of three overs without success and the best bowler on view on a wicket that offered some bounce and movement was 32-year-old Sandeep who finished with 3 for 29. Speaking to the reporters after the end of the day's play, Jaffer said his team has recovered well now in a good position to call the shots. "We are in a good position though we would have liked it to be something like 270-6. It was a good recovery," he said. Satisfied with his day's rescue work, Jaffer said the team's batsmen knew that the first session would be a tricky one with the ball seaming around a bit. "It feels good to score a century. Someone had to stand there and make runs. Happy to have compiled my 50th first class hundred. The first session was very trying. We needed to hang around. There was not a big partnership at all but at the end of the day we are happy.” "They bowled well in the first session and the ball was seaming around and it was a very criticial period. We knew once we played out the first session the wicket will ease out. A few bad shots were played, but they will learn with time. The wicket was not doing much after the first session and at end of the day we have recovered well," he emphasised. Asked about whether Umesh Yadav's pace has fallen a bit after his comeback from a serious back injury, Jaffer said it was the first

Palam here. Arindam batted through the day to remain unconquered on 139 as he shared a 129-run opening stand with lefthander Rohan Banerjee, who made a sedate 42. Arindam faced 260 balls during the day in which he hit 11 fours and a big six of offie Koteshwar Rao.
MITHUN TAKES SIX-FOR AS KARNATAKA BOWL OUT ODISHA FOR 226 CUTTACK: Karnataka had Odisha on the mat as they rode on Abhimanyu Mithun's six-wicket haul to bundle the hosts out for a meagre 226 before themselves finishing day one on 22 for no loss in their Group A Ranji Trophy match. Top two boards matches between the leaders GM Vidit Santosh Gujarthi and GM Azer Mirzovev of Azerbaijan as well as International Master Mozharov Mikhail of Russia and GM Vladislav Borovikov of Ukraine ended without decisive result which helped GMs Lalith Babu, S P Sethuraman, Alon Greenfeld of Israel and Georgian duo Merab Gagunashvili and Levan Pantsulaia to catch up the leaders. Pantsulaia defeated Indian GM Arun Prasad while Lalith made short work International Master Swapnil Dhopade. Gagunashvili, Sethu and Greenfeld joined the leaders after beating Neelotpal Das, Ramnath Bhuvanesh and Swayams Mishra respectively in the fourth round encounters.
Shehzad century boosts Pakistan
PORT ELIZABETH: Ahmed Shehzad hit his third one-day international century as Pakistan made 262 all out in the second one-day international against South Africa at St George's Park. Opening batsman Shehzad made 102 after Pakistan were sent in to bat in a match reduced to 45 overs a side because of rain. Fast bowler Dale Steyn took a career-best six for 39, including two wickets in the last over of the innings, but the other South African bowlers struggled to contain their opponents, who lead the threematch series 1-0. Shehzad, 22, hit eight fours and two sixes in a 112-ball innings which ended unhappily when he hit the ball to mid-on and set off for a run before being sent back by batting partner Umar Akmal. He could not beat Imran Tahir's throw to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and gestured angrily at Akmal.
Lahiri banks on familiarity for Hong Kong Open
HONG KONG: Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri is hoping to take advantage of his familiarity with the Golf Club here in his bid to win his first title outside India at the USD 1.3 million Hong Kong Open next week. The 26-year-old believes the course set-up at the Hong Kong Golf Club suits his playing style and is similar to his home venue where he has won thrice. "There are a few tracks which are similar to character to the Delhi Golf Club and the Hong Kong Golf Club is another course which is similar to that. It's a really good course which has withstood the test of time," he said. "It's a great track and another one of those classic tracks with lots of trees, small and elevated greens. You'll need to control your shots from off the tees and you've got to come in from the right spots and right angles," added Lahiri.
South African cricket legend Graeme Pollock honoured
JOHANNE SB URG: The Eastern Province Cricket Board has honoured South Africa's Cricketer of the Century, Graeme Pollock, by naming a pavilion at the St George's Park stadium in Port Elizabeth after him. The old Centenary Pavilion was re-named the Graeme Pollock Pavilion at Wednesday’s one-day match between South Africa and Pakistan. "Thank you to the people of Port Elizabeth for 30 good years. Your support and friendliness was much appreciated to the cricket administration and sporting public. Your support provided the inspiration for a successful cricketing career. Many thanks and God Bless," said Pollock, who had made his provincial debut for Eastern Province at 16.

EW DELHI: After floating a team in the MotoGP series, Mahindra Racing will now have an Indian team racing in the inaugural FIA Formula E series, which will feature electric cars. The motor sports division of the Mumbai-based USD 16.2 billion multinational Mahindra Group has signed an agreement with series promoters Formula E Holdings to become the eighth and only Indian team to join the new zero emission series. The championship will begin in September 2014, with 10 races in its first season in citycentre locations around the world, including London, Beijing and Los Angeles. Mahindra already sells electric
car 'Reva'. "We strongly believe that Formula E can provide an excellent global showcase for our electric vehicle technology," Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra Group, said in a statement. "With advanced operations and expertise in electronics, IT, automotive technologies and manufacturing, we are already seeing the fusion of this technology into our electric vehicle operations. Racing will further accelerate that trend while Formula E is set to raise awareness globally about the benefits of electric vehicles," he added. India have a team in Formula One series, Sahara Force India, coowned by Vijaya Mallya and Sahara Group but with no Indian driver. Alejandro Agag, CEO, of series promoters Formula E Holdings, said, "We are very proud to have a major global company like Mahindra join the FIA Formula E Championship. Adding a manufacturer from India to what is already a real global mix of teams is fantastic news for the series. Everything is coming together very well and we look forward to presenting all ten teams to the FIA World Motor Sport Council next month."
