It will be recalled that Suraj (22), was arrested on June 10, on the basis of a letter, purportedly written by Jiah, which was found by her mother Rabiyah Khan and her sister from Jiah’s bedroom a few days after she hung herself from the ceiling fan on June 3. n a bid to allay concerns of stakeholders on the validity of e-Aadhaar and cutaway portion of Aadhaar letter, UIDAI on Monday said either of the two will be considered a valid proof of identity and address. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) which is implementing the Aadhaar project clarified in a statement that both -- eAadhaar and cut-away portion of Aadhaar letter, is to be considered as a valid proof of identity and address. The Information Technology Act, 2000 provides for legal recognition of electronic records with digital signatures. Hence e-Aadhaar is to be treated as a valid document in view of the fact that it has been digitally certified, the authority said in statement. According to the UIDAI, the e-Aadhaar document is digitally signed, using certificate issued by NIC as per the IT Act. Further, all the data printed in e-Aadhaar is the same data as printed in Aadhaar letter, making it a valid and secured electronic document, which should be treated at par with a printed Aadhaar letter.

A "Resident Portal" had been launched to enable the residents download their e-Aadhaar, an electronically generated Aadhaar letter, from the website of UIDAI. In addition, Common Service Centres, set up in states, are also catering to the needs of the residents with regards to download and printing of e-Aadhaar. UIDAI has been receiving complaints from residents regarding refusal of acceptance of cut away portion of Aadhaar letter as a valid document, it stated. The authority said the cut away portion of Aadhaar letter is as an officially valid document as it contains all the details of Aadhaar letter such as name, address, Aad-

haar number, photograph and logo of the Aadhaar Project. It also carries a quick response (QR) code containing the demographic details of the resident, it added.

If they choose to speak of something negatively, particularly in their essays and letters, they will be denied marks for their attempt. revaluation. It was noticed that students were not marked for a few topics in the essay and letter section. On enquiry it was disclosed that due to the students’ choice of a negative angle to their essay or letter, they were denied marks. Uday Nare, senior teacher, Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri, said, “More often than not this issue arises in essays and letters. If an essay topic is about a politician, a student might be biased and speak of him or her in either a positive or negative manner, thereby concluding the topic wrongly. Technically, teachers are responsible for this as they should give their students sufficient knowledge to write correct answers particularly in the case of the na-

tion and national leaders.” According to the rules of the state board however, any student expressing a negative opinion on a topic will not be granted marks for the answer. When the ADC, contacted Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, Maharashtra State Board Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Mumbai Division, he said “It is true that any student answering a question with negative opinions will not be granted marks. This rule has been brought up after examiners complained about students portraying certain topics in a wrong light, which by default makes the answer wrong. Students should write correct and appropriate answers, and the examiners will surely give them the marks they deserve.”

Implement vegetable farming scheme, Pawar tells govt U

nion Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Monday asked Maharashtra government to implement the Central scheme of encouraging vegetable farming within the 50 km radius of cities and towns with 10 lakh population. "Last year, a budgetary provision of Rs.300 crore was made for the

purpose of encouraging vegetable farming within 50 km radius of cities and towns with 10 lakh population. The state government needs to take up the scheme and implement it in the state. This will help farming as well as citizens will get vegetables at affordable rates," Pawar said. Pawar said that the export of

agriculture produce had helped to increase the country's foreign exchange reserves, reports PTI. He also expressed concern over agriculture research taking a backseat due to several reasons like the issue of genetically-modified seeds being sub-judice and objections from different quarters. "Due to this, there is no good sentiments

among agriculture researchers," he said. Earlier, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in his speech voiced concern over the rising vegetable prices in Mumbai. "I had discussed the issue with Pawar and felt that the price rise was due to prevailing drought situation and decrease of sowing area

of vegetable crops," Chavan said. He said there was a ongoing debate on whether genetically modified (gm) seeds are secure or not. "Central government has prepared a bio safety protocol. The state government has set up a committee headed by Anil Kakodkar to take decision regarding permitting trials," he added.

Do you think that retired judges should not accept government assignments?

Ashish Shelar Member of Legislative Council

It is a very good suggestion from the designated CJP. Retired judges should not accept any government job in which sanctity of the judiciary at stake. In that case, to maintain the sanctity one should not accept such offers.

Adhik Shirodkar Advocate

Absolutely agree with designated CJI’s observations! In addition, while working as judge, there is always temptation in the mind of judges to not offend the govt. In this, the public that suffers. To stop it, the retired judges should not be taking such assignments.

Sagar Kumbhar Advocate

No judges and for that matter no retired top bureaucrats IAS, IPS and IRS should be given post-retirement assignments. There is absolutely no dearth of bureaucrats and sitting judges. Public servants including judges below need to be promoted and given these assignments.

Y.P. Singh Social activist

I may only partially agree with him. The expertise of judges is required in governmental organisations. What is required is to have a system where independent committees should do the appointments of retired judges rather than politicians.

But as the numbers kept growing and the onlookers began to climb on to debris dumped in the open, next to the church, for a vantage view, it became obvious that something would have to be done. The police had made a human chain to control and stop the mob that was shuffling towards the church gate. And then it was that we noticed a small and rather charming tableau. WE wish we had managed to get a picture of this particular event, but in he absence of one, word pictures will have to do. So, picture the aftermath of the poignant farewell to Wing Commander Darryl Castelino at Vakola on Sunday evening. There were more than 1,000 people in attendance, plus innumerable hangers-on who had gathered out of curiosity. After the burial and the 11-gun salute, some people went into the church of Our Lady of Egypt for prayers while the rest came out of the cemetery. An old lady was distributing small packed cups of water and biscuits at the gate as most people had come from long distances for the ceremony. Very few people actually seemed to need them, we noticed. A bunch of Airmen came out of the gate. The chief minister and two

uniform managed to cut loose from the crowd and made a beeline for the Airmen who were marching towards their own vehicles. The youngster held the hand of one of the Airmen and confidingly spoke to him. The latter said nothing and instead, pointed towards an officer. The boy went and held the hand of the officer and asked something. The Airmen had by now in a neat file reached their vehicles when suddenly, two more boys came up, held their hands and seemed to ask for something. So we went up to the group and asked what the children had said. This was the answer. “Sir, mujhe bhi Air Force join karna hai. Kya karna padega, batao na.” We don’t know what answers the

IF we have not learned anything from the story of Bijlee the elephant, who died in pain and suffering last Sunday, unable to stand or lie down by herself, needing a crane to keep her upright after a lifetime being fed on vada pao and parathas and similar unsuitable for elephants nutrition, she will have died in vain. Once her story surfaced in the media and reporters made a pilgrimage of sorts to the shed in Mulund where she was being looked after, suddenly plenty of ‘caretakers’ surfaced. After all, she provided a good photo op and, in any case, she was a lovable animal. This was in spite of being illtreated all her life and there is no way we can be convinced that ‘at bottom’, Bijlee’s master, who used her cruelly and commercially for decades, actually had any love for her. There is no way he could not have noticed her injuries or how much she was suffering. So, here’s the thing. Let us all at

least pledge that if we see an elephant on the roads anyway in Mumbai or Thane, we will inform the authorities. We will also follow up our complaint to see that some action is being taken. And if it is not taken, we will complain about the people to whom we complained to the higher authorities. Somewhere, surely, even in corrupt India, the buck has to stop!

WHY is social crusader Anna Hazare quiet over BJP leader Gopinath Munde’s statement that he had spent Rs.8 crore in the last Lok Sabha elections? If this is the amount Munde really spent, he went far above the prescribed limits set by the Election Commission. The EC has now sent a notice to Munde, but Hazare, known to be stridently vocal on such issues, has so far not uttered a single word. Has his proximity to Munde forced the crusader to turn a blind eye and maintain a stoic silence? While Hazare is more or less out of the limelight, as is his campaign against corruption, by being selective and almost biased in the Munde controversy, has he damaged himself and eroded further his revolutionary movement?

More loved in sickness and in death than she ever was in life, Bijlee’s body receives attention from some of the people who cared for her in the last couple of months of her sad life.

with plans to meet and greet everyone who matters to his business. On Sunday, he visited Chennai and met the Chief Minister there and then the press. After that, he flew to Kochi, met Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Transport Minister Aryadan Mohammed at the Cochin International Airport for discussions. He visited the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in the Kochi city and after that addressed the media. On Monday he flew to Mumbai and addressed the media at 8.15 am and then met Ratan Tata and Cyrus Mistry and other Tata officials. After the Mumbai meetings, he flew to Delhi where he is supposed to meet the Aviation Minister and other officials in the Indian government and of course, address another press conference. Unfortunately, since we did not get a peek into his schedule, we don’t know where he is right now - Kolkata or Hyderabad or Chandigarh? One thing is certain, he’ll be back here for another press conference. And this time, even if it is 8.15 am, we are willing to bet there will be few complainers.

Investigations into murder of a autorickshaw driver in his vehicle throw up fact that another murder had been commmitted in the same autorickshaw a few years ago. The vehicle’s number plate only adds to the mystery

JINXED: This vehicle has seen two of its drivers killed brutally, the recent victim being Abraz Ansari (inset). a source from the Malwani police station. On Friday night, rickshaw driver Abraz Ansari (26) was murdered in his rickshaw MH02SA7302, while he was on his way to Pathadwadi, Malad. According to the police, the victim was a resident of Malad and would earn his living by driving the rickshaw he rented from its owner Jabbar Khan, and generally working the night shift.

An officer from the Malwani police station said that a sharp weapon, possibly a chopper, was used to slit Ansari’s throat, after which the assailant fled from the spot. A pedestrian passing by, saw him lying unconscious in a pool of blood, and alerted the locals and police after which Ansari was taken to the hospital, but was declared dead on admission. In 2006, rickshaw driver Shaukat Khan was murdered

in the same rickshaw by an unidentified assailant while he was working the night shift. Senior PI Abdul Rauf Sahikh from the Malwani police station said, “We have called in several suspects for an enquiry and are also speaking to Jabbar Khan who owns the rickshaw.” The Malwani Police has seized the auto, fearing that another murder might take place if it is allowed to stay on the streets.

Will reply to EC notice on July 6, says Munde 6... I will speak on the issue only after I give my reply," Munde told PTI. "I want reforms in the election process," Munde said without elaborating further. The Beed MP was speaking to reporters in Majalgaon tehsil of the district on the sidelines of a programme.

Sex-worker murdered in Juinagar By Amit Srivastav

A

35-year-old slum woman believed to be involved in flesh trade was found murdered outside Juinagar railway station on Monday morning. According to the Nerul police, the victim identified as Basanti Pathan resided in a slum near Juinagar railway station. She was murdered by unidentified assailants on Sunday night and her body was dumped near the station. An official from the Nerul police station said that the woman was a sex-worker and would spend several hours every night luring customers

outside the railway station. However, on Sunday night she did not return at her usual time. Her husband Sattal Pathan then looked for her the next day and finally found her body near the railway station. “Sattal Pathan was a daily wage earner and was unemployed most of the time. This probably led Basanti to choose flesh trade to make easy money,” said an official from the Nerul police station. The Nerul police have booked a case of murder against unidentified persons under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and have sent the body for postmortem. amit.srivastav@afternoondc.in Manoj Singh

By Zuber Ansari hile investigating the murder of a 26year old rickshaw driver whose throat was slit on Friday night by unidentified assailants, the Malwani police were shocked to discover that his was the second murder to take place in the vehicle. To add to their surprise, further investigations revealed that the first murder which took place in 2006 has still to be solved with no arrests having been made. The number plate of the rickshaw, MH02SA7302 seems to add more mystery to both murders. “There seems to be some connection between the rickshaw number plate and the two murders, considering 302 which are the last three digits of the number plate, are also the section of the Indian Penal Code applied for murder cases”, said

Brutal highway murder solved Body was found in gutter along Eastern Express Highway near Kanjurmarg

The accused, identified as bus drivers Babloo Singh (32) and Sushil Kurade (27) and Riyaz Ahmad Ansari (34), an auto rickshaw driver. On May 16 last year, Kanjurmarg police had found a man’s decomposed body with brutal head injuries, in a drain on Eastern Express Highway (MumbaiThane Road). “The place where the body was dumped is a very secluded. A driving school trainer who had parked his vehicle along the road and had got down to relieve himself spotted the body after which the police was informed,” said Mahipat Indalkar, senior police inspector, Vikhroli police station. The deceased was wearing a vest and black coloured pant, police said. The police have registered a murder case against unidentified person in this regard, reports PTI. “A missing person’s complaint was registered at MIDC police station last year by Shivanand’s family after he went missing,” a Crime Branch officer said. On May 12, the accused and the victim had drinks together in Babloo’s bus. A sudden quarrel erupted between the accused and Shivanand over stealing of their vehicle equipments, police said. The accused then drove him to Eastern Express Highway in the bus and murdered him with a heavy object before dumping his body in a nearby drain, police said. All the accused were arrested and handed over to Kanjurmarg police, the crime branch officer said.

On the same day, the IRCTC sent its letter to senior inspector of RPF, CST informing about the trespassing incidence. Not only that my client has electricity bills, ID is also issued to him by the Railways. The department has also conducted health check up in our premises. The allegations leveled by Goel and Goel on my client are totally baseless.” Repeated attempt to contact RPF officials turned futile. When this paper tried to contact the office of Group General Manager, IRCTC no official was ready to speak on this dispute. However, sources in the IRCTC said that after repeated complaints from Goel and Goel a letter was written to the RPF asking them to initiate necessary action. Now this matter has reached the court we have also decided to go slow on this issue.

This is against 11 per cent and 5 per cent for the National Capital Region and Bengaluru markets, respectively, the report said. "Incessant price rise and higher concentration of premium projects with a ticket size of more than Rs 1 crore in new launches have limited the purchasing ability of home buyers resulting in a decelerating rate of absorption over the previous four quarters," the report said. he body of a 17-year-old boy was found in a water tanker in Mulund on Monday morning following which the police have begun investigations and have also detained one person. The body was found with strangulation marks on the neck but cops are yet to register a murder case and are awaiting post mortem reports from the doctors to decide the further course of action. According to the police,

Ram Kailash Chavan was found dead in the cabin of the water tanker (MH-04-EN6643) between 7.30 to 8 a.m. on Monday on the Eastern Express Highway. “He was dead when found and we could observe strangulation marks around his neck. We have sent the body for a post mortem to the Rajawadi Hospital who will ascertain the cause of death and give us a report. An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has currently been registered in the case,” said an officer from Mulund police station.

Police added that Ram had come to Mumbai around two months ago and used to often visit some of his relatives at Vaishali Nagar in Mulund west. He worked as a cleaner in the tanker, owners of which are currently being questioned by the police. A person, Sharma, has been detained for questioning but cops are refusing to divulge any further details on the detainee. “He is yet to be arrested and it would be inappropriate to reveal his complete identity,” added the officer.

Inaction on part of CM led to disaster

CCUSING fingers are being pointed at Vijay Bahuguna, chief minister of Uttarakhand: It is being said that it is his lack of action before and after the flood that has led to the disaster in the state. The CM does not seem to be unduly worried about the huge devastation that has taken place. He has declared that the floods have been caused due to ‘nature’s fury’. Not many people believe what he has said: Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sushma Swaraj has stated he has ‘done nothing’. There are many who are convinced that it was a man-made disaster. The MET in Uttarakhand has said that it has issued an advisory before the heavy rains came: It had said that the yatra should be postponed. The chief minister ignored the warning. Locals in Uttarakhand are complaining that the government is doing nothing for them. The survivors have lost their all and are now exposed to cold and hunger. Only a few relief camps have been set up and assistance the locals are getting is very poor. And the chief minister has categorically stated that people and parties from elsewhere in India should not do relief work on their own but should contact him and his officers and give their contributions to them. It is clear something is wrong with the relief work being done in Uttarakhand. The Centre should take greater interest in this regard. Massive relief and rehabilitation work is required in Uttarakhand and the Centre should not only allocate funds but also entrust its agencies to be hugely involved in the relief and rehabilitation work.

OT long ago, a disaster in any part of the country would elicit national response. People would go door-to-door to collect money, clothes, utensils, medicines and many other things of daily use to transmit through agencies which were voluntarily engaged in relief and rehabilitation work. The attitude has changed in the last few years. People are, no doubt, concerned and sympathetic. But there is no countrywide effort to organise help. The atmosphere is no more animated with the zeal which I recall used to be there. Take the example of Uttarakhand. The devastation has been on a massive scale. More than 5,000 people have reportedly died and the material loss runs into hundreds of crores of rupees. Yet the reaction has been tepid. Efforts are visible on individual scale. But the nation as such is not concerned. Particularly, the states in the south and the east have shown less involvement. The governments, both in the hilly state of Uttarakhand and at the Centre, were too late to respond and had no clue what to do. Even after 10 days of the disaster, 20,000 people were stranded at different places. What dominated the discussion was not the scale of assistance but whether it was man-made or the nature’s fury. Of course, it was man-made. The reasons are obvious.

No foreign country offered to help The trees to accommodate the ever growing bureaucracy were cut. The de-silting of river is out of any government’s agenda. The National Disaster Management Board was tried for the first time and found wanting. Political parties have done nothing concrete except politicising the tragedy. The official appeal to contribute to the Prime Minister’s Relief fund has been issued as a matter of routine. Surprisingly, no foreign country has offered help to evacuate the stranded people, much less any material assistance. Pakistan has missed a golden opportunity to befriend the common Indian. Islamabad should have sent trucks of food and medicines to the Wagha border. New Delhi would have lost face if it had stopped the aid. If one were to analyse the tragedy, one would come to the conclusion that the nation has lost sensitivity. Different states have over the years become islands by themselves and there is hardly any tragedy which transcends

the border. When it came to rescuing the victims, states like West Bengal and Gujarat preferred to evacuate the habitants of their own area. The absence of national feeling may well be the reason that every state is putting up dams in catchment areas. They think that the consequential loss is to other states not to them. And so many dams have come up that they are counterproductive. Of course, the money spent has enough leeway for corruption at political and official levels. The land and timber mafias have played havoc at the expense of the nation. The countrywide coordination is possible

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar

The only bright side is the work done by the army and the air force. They evacuated thousands of people stuck at different places. The survivors in fact narrated the difference between the government which did not do anything and the army and air force which rescued them and gave food and shelter. One air force helicopter, engaged in rescue operation, crashed because of bad weather. Twenty lives were lost. India is a heartless state. Over the years, it has deteriorated in values. There is not a semblance of idealism left to talk about social justice or to lift the lower half to the level where it can lead a viable living. Poverty, unemployment and malnutrition, signs of a decaying society, are increasing day by day. We are, almost back to the Hindu growth rate of 4 per cent. A dollar fetches Rs. 60. In fact, the rupee is in shambles. Today’s spectacle of poor growth and the dismal future is because political parties have catered to their fiefdoms without keeping before them the picture of India on the whole or the growth of every sector or every area. Unfortunately, the parties have not realised that their politics may feather their nests but would not take the country forward.

The working classes — speech of M. de Caprivi — all privileges of ruling classes based on violence — the increase of armies up to point of universal service — universal compulsory service destroys all the advantages of social life, which government is intended to preserve — compulsory service is the furthest limit of submission, since in name of the state it requires sacrifice of all

Universal military service is only the internal inconsistency inherent in the social conception of life, carried to its furthest limits, and becoming evident when a certain stage of material development is reached. The social conception of life, we have seen, consists in the transfer of the aim of life from the individual to groups and their maintenance — to the tribe, family, race, or state. This, at the most trying time when a few thousands of the stranded pilgrims at Badrinath are still to be evacuated and the major task of rehabilitating the locals and rebuilding the infrastructure in the state is staring at the government, is reprehensible. IT is very heartening to learn how tactfully and with huge risks the IAF pilots are flying out to reach to those marooned at most difficult locations like on the Kedarnath mountain region. The story of the first sortie undertaken by the Wing Commander Yunus, involving in the evacuation of the pilgrims stuck in Kedar shrine is indeed hair-raising. The spirit of this pilot is commendable as far as his intent is concerned. Those who have visited this shrine at 12,975 ft altitude are aware of how undulating and difficult it is to scale, whether by a pony or on foot, as at places the pathway, mostly wet, is less than a foot and a half wide and that too if one skids, will straight away plunge thousands of feet down to the river Alakananda, torrentially flowing along the steep slopes. I salute Wing Commander Yunus Influx of foreign tourists coming to India is increasing day by day. This is due to the fact that India has many interesting tourist spots and the cost of living is cheap compared to other countries. Hotel rooms at cheap rates and the hospitality of Indians gives them enough courage to come to India again and again. City’s suicide count alarming IT is very sad that both men and women take the extreme step of committing suicide when they face failure in life. Mumbai stands

WHEN people suffer in the flash floods in Uttarakhand region, BCCI announced awards in huge packet of money. Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) announced cash reward of rupees one crore each for every member of Indian cricket team for winning ICC Champions Trophy with another rupees 30 lakh each for the supporting staff. Announcement comes at a time when money is most needed for relief and rehabilitation work in Uttarakhand making thousands homeless and deprived of their livelihood. Cricket players are already earning a lot through advertisements and ‘auction-money’ received from an admittedly scandalous Indian Premier League (IPL). When people suffer in Uttarakhand, we are ready to give our cricketers loads of money but do not even think of the sufferings the victims are undergoing every day out there. — S. After all, failure is part and parcel of life and failure is alss the stepping stone for success. NGOs should come forward and help out men and women to come out of the shell and desist from committing suicide. After all suicide is not the the be all and end all for all the problems. One has to face fire with fire and come out successful in life. Suicide is a cowardly action. The question is if the script recovered from the deceased’s house is addressed to the applicant (Suraj) or is it just extracts from her diary? Whether the recovered letter can be called suicide note at all? It should be noted that the letter written by Jiah never reached the applicant. She was in the relationship on her own volition. It cannot be ignored that Jiah had suicidal tendencies. The applicant (Suraj) has been in jail for 21 days and there was no need for further incarceration.

abortion. While granting bail to Suraj, the court asked him to pay a surety of Rs.50,000 and directed him to surrender his passport and appear before the Juhu police every alternate day. Raising serious doubts on whether the letter found by Rabiyah can even be deemed a suicide note at all, Justice Sadhana Jadhav of the Bombay High Court said, “There is no doubt that the suicide of the young girl was very unfortunate. However, she must have been impulsive and so Suraj cannot be held solely responsible for her suicide. The letter, purportedly written by Jiah and recovered from her house, could not be taken as a suicide note as it is not addressed to anyone and

is not dated. The question is if the script recovered from the deceased’s house is addressed to the applicant (Suraj) or is it just extracts from her diary? Whether it can be called suicide note at all? When there is no date on it can it be linked to the day she committed suicide? Also, it should be noted that the letter written by Jiah never reached the applicant. Therefore it cannot be said that the emotions expressed in the letter ever reached the applicant.” The court also held that in this case, the applicant never nurtured an intent or ‘mens rea’ (motive of the crime) to push the girl to commit suicide. Justice Sadhana said, “She was in the relationship on her own volition. It all depends on the psyche of the person. It cannot be ignored that Jiah had suicidal ten-

dencies. Earlier also she had attempted suicide and it was the applicant who took care of her. The deceased’s mother was not even aware of this incident. It was clear that the deceased was extremely possessive of Suraj, who was focusing on his career and hence could not give much time to Jiah. It also appears that on the day of the incident there was some misunderstanding between the deceased and applicant due to which Jiah was in a rage of fury. This boy has been in jail for 21 days and there was no need for further incarceration. Suraj, lodged in Arthur Road prison in central Mumbai, had said in his bail plea that he and Jiah were in a consensual relationship and the letter was being misused by Rabiyah.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in Vishwanath Salian | ADC

BACKDOOR ENTRY Continued from pg 1 « scheduled to be held on July 6. Members will be co-opted according to the strength of each party in the house. Even as the new norms issued by the urban development department, clearly states people aspiring for co-opted seats should have to be former commissioners, NGO representatives or should be lawyers, engineers or doctors, almost all the parties have followed the traditional ritual by nominating politicians, mainly those defeated at the hustings, as a rehabilitation gesture. Among the five members to be co-opted, two are expected to be from the NCP, while the Shiv Sena, Congress and BJP will have one nominated member each. However the BJP which has an equivalent strength with NCP (both have 28 members each) has stake its claim over two seats. On the virtue of their current status of being the single largest party

in the house, the BJP has sought the intervention of the judiciary, the hearing of which is scheduled on July 4 -- two days ahead of the special general body meet. It should be noted that except the BJP, group leaders of all parties including Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena have submitted the names of nominees to the municipal commissioner. While NCP is being represented by Bhagwati Sharma and Prakash Thakur, the Shiv Sena and Congress have nominated Dhanesh Patil and Dinesh Nalavade, respectively. Interestingly, all these nominees have suffered humiliating defeats in the civic elections. Even as BJP stayed away from the nomination process to register their protest, it is the only party to introduce new faces including Dr Sushil Agarwal and Hemant Mhatre. Political observers believe that the as per law the NCP is entitled to get two seats and it is the Mayor who will have a final say in the special general body meeting.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS: Former President Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam at the first year anniversary celebrations of the Center of Excellence for Minimal Access Surgery Training (CeMAST) which is India’s first of its kind multi speciality training centre that uses innovative training technical skills for educating doctors, at Mahalaxmi on Monday. CeMAST has adopted a unique methodology where they actually get animal cadaver organs, simulate the tissues using a device and make them alive and artificially bleed so that the surgeons can get hands on experience in surgery before they practice on any human being, because as of now, minimal access surgery training is not a part of the medical curriculum. CeMAST is an autonomous, not for commerce and not for profit learning centre, run by surgeons for surgeons. Also CeMAST courses have been recognized by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, as a soft skills learning center for fellowship courses in Minimal Access Surgery.

ince Doctor’s Day was yesterday, we thought we’d switch things up a little and see what doctors are like as patients. You know what you’re looking for when you need a doctor, what tests you would shy away from and which ones you wouldn’t hesitate to get done at a moment’s notice. But, we don’t often think about what our doctors would do in a similar situation. We found out what doctors around the city have to say about choosing other doctors, tests they think are absolutely essential and if there are any tests they think are unnecessary and would never undergo. Dr. rashmi sheTTY (specialist physician)

Continued from pg 13 «

Dr.

aTUl

marwah

(Consultant,

Nuclear medicine) “i ask around the fraternity.” “I would ask my associate doctors about who I should consult. I’d look for reputation, experience and qualifications.” essential: The consultant & chief of Nuclear Medicine at Seven Hills Hospital and director of Medcare Institute of diagnostic feels that body imaging scans are essential for cancer patients. Unnecessary: “Each test is based on a scientifically proven technology. So, if it is recommended to you by a reputed doctor, then it is only going to help.”

Dr. sharaT kolke

Dr. amiT ThaDhaNi (surgeon)

“someone i know.” “I prefer choosing a doctor known to be competent through my personal experience with him, or I choose a doctor recommended by a colleague. I would avoid big names — they come with too much baggage,” says the consulting surgeon and medical director at Nirmaya Hospital. essential: Complete blood count test and thyroid simulating hormone test. Unnecessary: The IgG / IgM test for Tuberculosis has a high incidence of giving inaccurate results.

Dr. shreePaD kheDekar

“a doctor needs to put his ego aside while treating his/her patients.” For Dr. Rashmi, a specialist physician at Ra Skin & Aesthetics clinic, her judgement of a good doctor was formed during her childhood, with Dr. Rama Swamy. She says, “He was old school; he believed in clinical examination and diagnosis first and then maybe supporting it with tests. And the day my mom took me to him to proudly announce that her daughter could also be a doctor, he told me, ‘never hesitate to say you don’t know and refer a patient to a relevant colleague; it is impossible to know it all, that is the difference between a good and an excellent doctor.’ So, I don’t let my ego get in the way if I feel that I need more reference or help of another a doctor from a different specialty. Beyond this, it is genuine concern, compassion and sincere effort in updating and delivering the best to your patients.” essential: Cancer markers at the specific age that your doctor advises. Unnecessary: Complete blood count every time you fall sick. It’s not necessary.

Dr. VYaNkeTesh Joshi

(general physician) “a doctor who i trust.” A general physician at Kohinoor Hospital, Dr. Sharat tells us that when choosing his doctor, he would prefer to visit someone whom he knows personally, who is trustworthy, and whose work he thinks is completely genuine. essential: According to him, stress tests are quite important as the test is an indicative window for all other illnesses. This test is not taken seriously. Unnecessary: I don’t think frequent blanket health check-ups are essential. Getting a diagnosis and then going for a test customised for the symptoms is more result oriented.

Dr. JaYashree ToDkar (Director of bariatric and metabolic surgery) “Clear doubts with my doctor friends.” “I choose to go to a specialist in a particular field, provided I know the diagnosis. If I have doubts about the diagnosis, I speak to my doctor friends who can help me in that particular field,” says the doctor from Dr. LH Hiranandani and Kohinoor hospitals. essential: I feel that to arrive at a diagnosis, all clinical examinations are really important. Unnecessary: All examinations are important. So, I don’t think that there are any tests that are not necessary. Dr NiDhi DhawaN (eNT surgeon)

“a well-informed and honest doctor.” “I would be likely to choose another doctor only for specialised areas and not for conditions such as fever. I prefer doctors who are well-informed, honest and sincere.” essential: The ENT surgeon at Shroff’s Hospital says that she can’t make a blanket statement about what tests are absolutely essential or not. Unnecessary: Tests do not replace clinical skill and while they can be effective tools in the hands of good clinicians, they can be useless in the hands of a doctor who does not have a specific thought while ordering the tests. However, such situations are rare.

(homeopath) “experience is important.” Clinical director of Imperial Clinics, Dr. Shreepad says, “Whenever somebody at home is ill, I’ll try to treat them myself. Being a homeopath, my family has learnt the tactics to cure themselves. If at all there is a serious health issue, we instantly visit the specialised doctors. Being a specialist I do have a lot of knowledge and try to curb the illness at home. If I had to look for another doctor, I’d look for expertise and the doctor’s personal experience over the years, not just word of mouth.” essential: Blood tests and full body checkups. Unnecessary: One’s health is precious so, I wouldn’t hesitate to take any test to better it.

(Director, sDF holistic) “a family physician knows best.” For Dr. Vyanketesh, managing director of SDF Holistic, knowledge and practice are the two most important things when it comes to choosing a doctor. He says, “It’s important to have a family physician as he knows the history of your family members. In case he is not able to treat you, he can tell you where you can find a specialist for a particular illness.” essential: Diabetes screening and blood pressure tests. Unnecessary: It is difficult to point out a particular test because when you fall sick you can’t predict a medical test, so I am not against any test if it is part of my treatment.

Dr. aPoorVa shah (Co-founder, richfeel) “Trust and faith.” “There are many factors which go into choosing a doctor for my family or myself for an ailment which is not my specialisation. My choice of a doctor is broadly based on acquaintance, trust and faith.” essential: He tells us that he would definitely go for a hair tissue mineral analysis. He tells us, that it provides a blueprint of a person’s biochemistry and so, can indicate the nutritional content of the body’s tissue, the ratio of nutrients to heavy toxic metals and the metabolism type. Unnecessary: There have been a lot of different tests discovered in recent times which a person doesn’t always need to take. For example, I would personally never undergo a stress test. Dr. karishma JaraDi

(Dentist) “i have a list of specialists.” Dr. Karishma, aesthetic dentist at Dentzz Dental care, says, “As a doctor, I understand the consequences of an emergency and so, my family and I have listed down the names and numbers of a few specialist doctors who can be contacted depending on their profound knowledge and expertise.” essential: Diabetes, Cholesterol, Hemoglobin, and vitamin D12 and D3. Unnecessary: I’d take any that I needed.

Dr. samir Parikh

Dr. maNJiri PUraNik (Founder,

instasculpt) “Doctor’s experience.” “Choosing a doctor for myself as well as my family would be based on the expertise of the doctor and the experience they have.” essential: Routine blood tests. After the age of 40, a baseline ECG and stress tests. Unnecessary: The founder of Instasculpt feels that no medical tests are unindicted.

Dr saNJaY DhawaN (Director, opthalmology) “Professional ethics.” The director of Ophthalmology at Fortis Hospital says that he’d choose a doctor from his friends whose competence is wellknown and has good professional ethics.” essential: I leave it up to my doctor to decide the tests I need to take. Unnecessary: Any unwarranted tests, no matter how simple.

(Director of mental health) “Prefer a friend.” “Which doctor I would choose to treat me would depend upon the nature of my symptoms. But, I would prefer a friend whom I have been working with and who I trust has enough knowledge about his field,” says the director of Mental Health & Behavioural Sciences at Fortis Healthcare. essential: It would depend on the symptoms. Unnecessary: Any tests that have not been advised by my treating doctor.

Dr. Yogesh Velaskar

(Consultant) “Never treat my own family.” “I would never treat my family. I always go to a friend or a family doctor if my family or I have to get checked.” essential: Once you cross the age of 40, you must go for Lipid Profiles and blood pressure tests. Below the age of 40, if there are no unusual symptoms, then it isn't necessary to take tests. Unnecessary: The consultant of critical medicine at HHS doesn’t think that any tests are unnecessary.

MONSOON MUNCHIES >> Try to avoid giving in to your bhajiya cravings this monsoon

The monsoon is the perfect time for bhajiyas. But, we’re sure you haven’t considered the health aspect of consuming these snacks. That’s why Dev Goswami gets a nutritionist to rate some popular monsoon treats

T

he love affair of a rainy day and hot snack goes way back. From roasted corn and soup, to the evergreen tea and bhajiyas, there are a number of foods that have a romantic (and calorific!) connection with the monsoon. But, would you still find them appealing once you read what Krupa Mhatre, a nutritionist from Gold’s Gym, has to say about them? We get her to rate few of the most popular monsoon foods on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the least healthy and 5 being the most healthy. But don’t worry, not all of them are bad!

Fried Foods rating: 1/5 We weren’t surprised with the rating and we hope that you weren’t too. Deep fried snacks, such as bhajiyas and samosas, might appeal to your taste buds but they are extremely unhealthy. So much so that Krupa, while giving the ratings, had to cross-check with us to ensure that one was the lowest rating. She’d have gladly rated these items in the negative. But, don’t start hating us just yet! Like with most things, eating fried foods once in a while will do you no harm as long as you follow a healthy diet on other days. You can also make them slightly healthier by baking them.

Hot drinks rating: 2/5 When we say hot drinks, we are talking about roadside cutting chai and coffee. Most tea stalls pump up these steaming hot drinks with copious amounts of sugar and you can never be sure about the type of milk they use. However, considering the fact that there is a big debate on

« KNOW MORE: EMU OIL We’ve all heard of emu meat, but did you know that emu oil is healthy as well? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more What happens when an ex-Wall Street Banker from the USA decides to venture into emu farming? You get oil with a plethora of health benefits. Brought to India as part of his TallBird brand, founder and CEO Vinay Sharma introduced emu oil in India last month for external care and as an oral dietary supplement. It can heal burns, wounds and raise your Omega supplement levels.

tHe beneFits

When applied, it heals burns and speeds up the healing of wounds. l It protects you from UV rays, nourishes and moisturises you skin. l It has several anti-ageing properties and can also be used as natural treatment for stretch marks and scars. It also helps tackle itchiness and brittle nails. l You can use it to treat alopecia, split ends and dull looking hair. l Emu oil has strong healing capacities, so it relieves pain and inflammation in arthritis patients. l The colourless, odourless oil is a recommended dietary supplement. It is a rich source of Omega 3, 6 and 9 and can be used in place of fish oil supplements, especially for vegetarians. l It can also be used to treat people affected by fibromyalgia. * You can purchase emu oil as well as find out more about it on www.tallbirdemu.com. They’ve just introduced it, so watch out for more varieties and for it to be available off the shelf in leading stores across the city soon. It’s available in different strengths and ranges from `425 to `1,950. l

whether caffeine can benefit you or not, we won’t say that you should completely avoid these drinks. If you keep your consumption to two cups a day, it should be all right.

soup rating: 5/5 There are a couple of disclaimers that Krupa would like to add when it comes to soup. She says that the 5/5 rating applies to soup that is homemade and does not include creams. She adds that packaged, ready-to-eat soups that are loaded with preservatives are not a good idea and she gives them a 2/5 rating. But, as far as homemade recipes are concerned, there’s no doubt that they are one of the healthiest foods you can consume during the monsoon.

roasted green cHickpeas rating: 5/5 How many times have you been tempted by a roadside stall serving those delicious, roasted chickpeas, but have refrained yourself because of ‘health’ concerns? Ironically, Krupa gives this dish a 5/5 rating; as long as you make sure of the hygiene of the vendor and the stall’s surroundings, chickpeas are healthy.

corn rating: 4/5 Krupa says that it doesn’t matter whether the corn is roasted or boiled, both the varieties are equally good for you. The only thing you need to worry about is that if you’re on a diet, avoid or use very little butter while boiling the corn.

« CELEB FITNESS TIP: PUNIT J. PATHAK Actor and dancer Punit J. Pathak shares his secret for a healthy life with Rohit Pramar

How do you stay healthy? By watching what I eat and exercising every day. I eat and think healthy. Do you go to the gym? Yes, I do go to the gym. But, with Jhalak Dikhlaja Season 6 going on right now, I’ve given gym a break because I don’t get the time. But, since I am also a choreographer, I keep dancing and I think it is a great way to workout. It also helps me de-stress. Is there anything you avoid eating? I avoid oily food and sweets. But I love sweets, so sometimes I tend to overindulge. How do you get yourself back on track after unhealthy binging? I am a workaholic, so I never have to worry about getting back on track. I can’t laze around much. I get bored of holidays after two or three days, so I tend to keep working. When are you at your happiest? When I am creating something. Any fitness advice you’d like to give others. Eat healthy, think healthy, stay healthy and you will have a healthy life. Avoid junk food as it’s bad for your body. You don’t have to exercise in the gym every day, but to be physically active is important; you could also walk, jog or play a sport. Lastly, always think positive.

Start looking at those better bits about you, flaunt them and look at other folks who, like you, don’t look like photoshopped celebrities. mostly bs You there, are a confident and self-assured person when it comes to your body image. You have no qualms about your flaws and don’t go on thinking about them. Instead, you try to flaunt what you think you’ve got. Way to go!

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 2, 2013

QuiCK worK During this season, most modes of transport get delayed, so it’s best to get out of bed at least half an hour earlier so that you have ample time to get ready and make up for commuting setbacks caused by heavy rains.

>> Give yourself a break every once in a while to avoid exhaustion

D

Do you have a headache that makes you squint? a) Yes. b) No.

o you feel sick pretty much all the time? If you feel like throwing up every morning and your legs cramp often, you’re probably worried that you’re coming down with something serious. But, instead of a doctor, all you might need is a vacation. Read on to see if you’re exhausted or actually ill.

powder your feet If you know from experience that your feet tend to smell during the monsoon, carry a foot powder with you at all times. After you’ve reached work, go into a bathroom and apply it generously on your feet before slipping into your shoes again.

umbrella issues Like you should wear and store your raincoat, similar etiquette applies to your umbrella. Keep your umbrella outside in the bucket that most offices provide during this season. And, if your workplace doesn’t provide one, put it in a plastic bag before you head indoors and try not to keep it too close to your desk.

5

Do you feel feverish, but don’t have a temperature?

«

a) Yes. b) No. Do you feel like it takes extra effort to perform simple movements? a) Yes. b) No. Are you experiencing breathlessness or finding it harder to breathe than usual? a) Yes. b) No. Is concentrating on simple tasks suddenly more of an effort? a) Yes. b) No. Do you feel nauseous the minute you wake up in the morning? a) Yes. b) No.

dry it home Another annoying habit that people have during the monsoon is opening their umbrellas to dry besides their desks. So, how are other co-workers supposed to move around? Surely not by taking a leap over your umbrella, right? Dry your umbrella at the end of the day when you’re home.

8

10 wayS to Be an all

weather

worker You might not be even aware of the things that you’re doing which might irk your colleagues during the monsoon. Priyanka Singh tells you how to be a good monsoon co-worker

9

Cover your food If your office ritual is to drink and eat at your desk, then try not to let food lie around your desk uncovered for long periods of time. During the monsoon, due to the constant dampness, flies and bacteria tend to be more active and spread quickly.

6

Does your throat feel swollen? a) Yes. b) No.

Keep a Change If it’s raining heavily and you know you’ll be drenched by the time you reach work, carry a change of clothes with you. Wet clothes smell horrible, so in order to keep the stink away from yourself and the entire office, quickly get into the washroom and change out of your drenched clothes.

4

3

Are you experiencing an increase in gas or feel like you have acidity? a) Yes. b) No.

7

don’t steal Yes, we know that this has nothing to do with your health, but we’re mentioning it because it’s so rampant across workplaces. At 9am you put your beautiful umbrella in the bucket provided by your office and at 6pm, your monsoon shield has vanished! Many colleagues steal umbrellas while leaving. Be careful and keep dry umbrellas in a bag near you.

2

Keep it out The most irritating thing that people do is wear a raincoat and enter the office. But that’s not all, they also walk right up to their desks wearing the dripping raincoat, trailing a fat line of water mixed with germs and bacteria with them. So, kindly fold your raincoat and keep it in a plastic bag before you enter your workplace.

Are you suddenly experiencing stomach cramps? a) Yes. b) No.

If you’re fed up of constantly feeling like you’re on the verge of falling ill, Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests you take this quiz to find out whether you need a break

>> Sitting at your desk with your raingear and in wet clothes is very inconsiderate to your co-workers

10

not on your desK Don’t eat junk food such as bhajiyas, vada pav and samosas at your desk, no matter how much the rain begs you to. You shouldn’t be eating junk food at all during the monsoon and if you are, refrain from eating at your desk because flies are rampant during the rains. Also, you could tempt your calorie conscious co-workers. That’s just inviting bad karma! Change your soCKs Not just for the sake of hygiene, but also for the stink that you will generate once you remove your shoes. In the monsoon, never ever repeat the same pair of socks the next day.

mostly as Your life must be really hectic or you just aren’t giving yourself a break; either way it’s safe to say that you’re exhausted! You may be feeling ill all the time but the truth is, you’re just extremely tired. Try to rest, relax and take some time out from your responsibilities and see whether you feel better. The best thing to do would be to take a vacation. mostly bs Either you don’t have any of these symptoms and are hale and hearty, or your sick feeling has to do with an underlying illness that you haven’t identified as yet. Instead of waiting to see how it plays out, visit your doctor as soon as possible to find out what’s wrong. And if you feel fine, kudos to you!

why am i so tired? So, now that you know you’re tired, we’re sure you’re wondering why. After all, if you slept through your weekend and you’re not busy at work, there shouldn’t be a problem, right? Take a look at what might be causing your tiredness and how to make it better.

you’re eating too much junk:

Junk food makes you sluggish. Cut out salty and fried snacks and munch on an apple instead. Eating wholesome food and having a balanced diet can make you feel much more energetic.

you’re not sleeping right: If you sleep

too little, too much or are constantly interrupted, you’re not sleeping right and you’ll wake up feeling much more tired than you went to sleep. Sleep on a good mattress and remember to get an entire night’s rest, uninterrupted by technology.

you’re stressed: If your mind is

exhausted, it’s going to show physically. Even if you have a great diet, sleep well and go about your life as well as you can, your health might suffer. This is because anything that stresses your mind stresses your body, making you feel tired and under the weather.

you’re inactive: Lazy people are usually

the most tired. It’s a vicious cycle really. Feeling too tired to exercise is not a good enough excuse to stay inactive. The more you exercise and the more active you are, the less tired you’ll feel.

you’re not getting enough sun: Lack

of vitamin D is a major cause for extreme fatigue. You’ll feel like you’re coming down with the flu or like you’re burning up, when all you really need is a little sun or a supplement.

you can’t wind down: Do you fall asleep

mid-message and is your phone constantly buzzing under your pillow while you’re trying to sleep? If you don’t take at least an hour out of your life to wind down before getting to bed, you’re definitely going to feel exhausted and ill the next day.

you’re dehydrated: Have you had

enough water today? Check again and remember to stay properly hydrated through the day, because the lack of water can make you feel exhausted. Go ahead, have a few glasses of water and watch your energy levels perk up.

The Masala Bhangra girl If you’re the type of person who hates the monotony of the gym, then you’ll love what Shalini Bhargava, the founder of JG’s Fitness, has to offer. So, get your dancing shoes on as Dev Goswami tells you all about her masala bhangra workouts Five cardinal rules oF Fitness

Shalini tells us about the five rules of fitness that should never be broken: • Regularity • Intensity • An overall well-rounded exercise program which incorporates cardiovascular fitness, strength training for muscles and bones, flexibility training and functional fitness. • Training the mind is equally important as it is the mind that rules the body. • Eating right and healthy.

The Masala Bhangra workout is derived from two Indian words — masala, meaning spicy, and Bhangra, which is a traditional folk dance form from the state of Punjab. The Masala Bhangra workout is an exercisedance routine that modernises the highenergy folk dance by blending traditional Bhangra dance steps with the exhilaration of Bollywood dance moves. It is suitable for people of all age groups and fitness levels. The program is approved by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and was created and devised by Sarina Jain. I am the program’s Indian master trainer. What are the benefits of Masala Bhangra over a regular workout? The uniqueness of this workout lies in the fact that it mixes cardiovascular activity with fun and is not just limited to people of a certain age group or fitness level — the steps of the workout can be modified to suit everyone. The duration of the class is 45-60 minutes and the music is based on dhol beats, which helps make it a high energy workout. This group activity is fun and burns more than 500 calories an hour. What, according to you, is the definition of fitness? Fitness to me is my life, passion and happiness; it means a healthy body, mind and soul. It gives you an energised body that’s free of ailments, a happy and positive mind, a clean heart and an enlivened soul. You also run the Indian Fitness and Aerobic Institute where new methodologies and training techniques are taught. Can you give us a sneak peek into the future of fitness? The fitness industry is growing rapidly. There will be a greater acceptance of integrating prevention activities, such as exercise, into one’s lifestyle. For this, people will have to be educated about how they can change their habits and make the right choices to enjoy longer, healthier and happier lives. Fitness professionals will be a major catalyst for change as they are already on the front lines. New techniques and workouts will focus more on functional strength and mental well-being. There will be more group workouts and high intensity interval training programs such as boot camps and Tabata will also grow strongly.

ake a look at what JG’s Fitness Centre has to offer and it’s clear to see why they aren’t run-of-the-mill. In tune with the growing demand for fun and group based workouts, they focus a lot on exercises that can be done as a group. Of course, it helps that founder Shalini Bhargava also runs the Indian Fitness and Aerobic Institute. One of the many workouts

that JG’s offers is Masala Bhangra. We get talking to Shalini about the workout, the future of fitness and more. Aerobics, Zumba, power yoga, spinning, boot camps… JG’s is not a normal gym. Why the emphasis on unconventional modes of fitness training? I wouldn’t call them unconventional. They

are, in fact, effective, safe and fun workouts. I strongly believe that one will do a task regularly only if he or she enjoys it and gets the desired results. Making it an enjoyable activity inspires and motivates the individual towards his or her fitness goals. One such workout is the Masala Bhangra. Tell us more about it.

Tell us about your daily fitness schedule. How do you keep yourself fit? I am lucky that I have been able to make my passion my profession. My members motivate me to stay fit. My workouts vary each day, depending on the type of class I am teaching and include aerobics, step aerobics as well as Masala Bhangra. I also incorporate Pilates and weight training in my exercise regimen. I try to eat healthy but do not stress myself over it and I definitely do not starve myself. I do indulge in my favourite foods occasionally.

« KNOW MORE: WHAT NOT TO DO IN THE MONSOON Enjoy the rains by resisting a few temptations. Tejasvi Desai lists them out avoid Heavy food

Because of the high humidity levels during the monsoon, your body’s ability to digest food is at its lowest. That’s why it is important to avoid oily food as your digestion is weak. Lack of proper digestion might lead to an upset stomach.

no to body art

Avoid getting tattoos or piercings during monsoon because there is a higher chance of your body art getting infected. The humidity in the air provides a conducive environment for bacteria to breed faster and if proper aftercare isn’t followed, you might end up with serious skin problems.

>> Use the health websites only to get a general idea about your symptoms

Just Google it

In the age of internet, this phrase has become a stock response to any query, big or small. But, what happens when the queries are about serious matters such as your health? Dev Goswami finds out...

T

oday, the internet has become omnipresent. While some hail the internet’s ability to spread information at an instant, others are more wary of the effects it might have. We aren’t going to take part in that debate, but what we are going to talk about is the combination of the internet and medical advice. Don’t understand what we mean? Then do what we did; Google ‘suffering from burning sensation in chest.’ One of the first few terms that will catch your attention is — heart attack! Now, we’re sure you know that unless you combine the search with a few other symptoms, you can’t possibly arrive at the correct solution. But, for someone with a burning sensation who has just read those words, they’ll often imagine the worst. That being said, it is obvious that the internet has a good side which can be helpful in cross-checking facts, educating yourself and getting basic information. To do so, without assuming the worst, follow the tips below.

safe searcHing There’s nothing wrong with using the internet for medical purposes as long as you are aware about what you are doing. Follow our tips to ensure that you use the information you see online properly: avoid community sites: You wouldn’t go to a random person on the road to help you with a medical condition, right? So using the same

logic, avoid websites where unqualified writers dish out advice and information. check for sources: Most good websites that cite studies and research will provide links for the same. Cross-checking those links is advisable. For articles that don’t give any links, try an independent search regarding the study to make sure it’s authentic. go to the experts: On the internet you will find a number of blogs and websites which are maintained by doctors and health experts themselves. These are usually the best sources to get information from. Multiple sources: Since you can never be sure who exactly is giving out information on a particular website, it is best to refer to as many sources as you can. Cross-checking across three to four websites is a good practice and will ensure that you don’t get fooled by the wrong information. no self-medication: Both the experts we spoke

expert advice

“In my opinion, it’s fine to use the internet to educate yourself and get a fair idea of all illnesses, as long as you get the actual advice and treatment from a doctor or an expert instead of the internet. One should also be careful that getting too much information from the internet can sometimes lead to negativity and this attitude can actually worsen the situation.” — Dr. Kinjal Pandya, Psychologist

HealtH websites

We get general physician Dr. Farah Ingale to tell us about good health related websites that can be used to educate yourself. However, she too warns that your use of these websites and the internet should only be limited to getting an idea about a condition. l www.nih.gov l www.mayoclinic.com l www.healthline.com l www.medicinenet.com l www.webmd.com (A drawback: Dr. Farah feels that this website is very scientific and so, can be a little confusing for the common man) to (see boxes), tell us that no matter what the internet says, never self-medicate based on what you read. It is all right to inform yourself about your medical condition or symptoms, but always consult with a doctor before you think about adopting a particular treatment or cure. Use common sense: The internet will provide you with ample information, but thinking is your brain’s job and the internet won’t help you with that. So, totally absurd claims that are backed with no proof, advertisement ‘guaranteeing’ a cure and alternative treatments that are ‘suppressed’ by the authorities should be avoided.

>> Avoid splashing in puddles during monsoon

don’t be brave

Even though it might look like a sunny day, never leave the house without at least one protective item of rainwear. It is imperative that you use adequate raingear such as raincoats, umbrellas and rain shoes when you step outside. This will ensure that you stay warm and dry, fending off fever and common cold.

skip street food

Snacks such as chaat, sandwiches, fried items and juices are tempting during the monsoon. But, street food should be strictly avoided as it may contain bacteria which can cause indigestion and other stomach problems. Also, water contamination is high during this season and we don’t know where the road side stalls get their water from.

pUddle probleMs

Splashing in puddles might seem like loads of fun, but this activity can cause leptospirosis. Large amount of stagnant water from gutters or from runoff drains carry bacteria and urine from rodents and stray animals. When we step into these puddles or stagnant pools of water, we stand a high chance of getting infected.

ASK OUR BEAUTY EXPERT BarBara, our Beauty expert, will Help fix your proBlems

dear Barbara, Due to the humid weather during the monsoon, my hair has become increasingly frizzy, especially after I wash it. Can you suggest some ways in which I can make my hair more manageable? — shalini nayak, goregaon dear shalini, Frizzy hair is a common problem during the monsoon and the best way to deal with it is to use a light leave-in conditioner after drying your hair. There are several anti-frizz serums available in the market, so choose a product that helps strengthen your hair as well as removes frizz. Flat beer is another great option as it replenishes moisture in your hair. Opt for dark beer as it offers maximum moisture. When rinsing your hair with beer, simply coat your hair with it, let it sit for a few minutes and rinse your hair with cold water. This will help get rid of the smell. Hair straightening equipment is also a short term solution for frizzy hair. Make sure you apply serum before straightening to prevent damage to your hair. Avoid blow drying in this season as it will worsen your problem.

« PROBLEM SOLVER:

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 2, 2013

While you’ve been taking extra care of your skin to avoid breakouts and problems that the monsoon brings, have you stopped to think about what happens to your hair? Manjiri says, “Like your skin, your hair too needs to be looked after during the monsoon.” She tells us that you’re more likely to face a number of issues during this season due to the humid climate, which makes hair drier. split ends: A common problem is split ends which occur because damp hair is very flexible and breaks easily. So, you need to handle it carefully. Towel dry and don’t pull or comb wet hair. Use your fingers or a blow dryer to dry your hair until it’s slightly damp. infections: From dandruff to lice, your hair is most susceptible to infections during this season, especially if it stays damp for too long. Try to keep it as dry as possible to avoid chances of infection. Also, avoid using gels or hair products because they will clump up in your hair with the dampness and cause dandruff. dryness: Your hair will become brittle and slightly dry during this season. Avoid using a hair dryer too much because it will make your hair look lifeless and it will lose its sheen if it’s dried excessively. Gently towel dry till it’s just damp and let it air dry naturally. Dr. Manjiri adds, “Since hair could lose its texture or become intensely dry, treatments such as low level laser therapy along with mesotherapy may be a good idea to help increase scalp circulation and maintain hair texture.” Consult a dermatologist to see if home remedies will work or if you need one of these treatments.

Common mistakes

>> If you must wear heels, make sure that your shoes are well-fitted and of good quality

dear Barbara, As an airhostess, my job demands wearing high heels on a regular basis. Recently, I have realised that I’m getting a bunion on my left foot and it’s extremely painful when I put pressure on that area. Can you tell me if it can be treated without undergoing surgery? — pratha shenoy, grant road dear pratha, I suggest you consult your doctor immediately and get an X-ray taken to determine the extent of the deformity. Based on this evaluation, your doctor can determine whether you need orthopedic shoes, custom-made inserts, medication, surgery or other treatments. If the bunion isn’t persistently painful and you have detected it early, changing to well-made, wellfitting shoes may be all the treatment needed. Some doctors advise bunion pads, splints, or other shoe inserts, provided they don’t exert pressure elsewhere on the foot and aggravate other problems.

Hair during monsoon

Even if you take good care of your hair, there are a few things you could be doing wrong. Take a look at how you should take special care when it comes to your precious locks: l Keep your hair tied often during the monsoon. l Cut your hair short if you need a low maintenance way to avoid pollution, dirt and split ends. l Try to avoid getting your hair wet in the rain. Pollution and floating toxins in the air come down with rain and settle on your scalp. This makes your scalp feel itchy and may even cause dandruff. Make umbrellas or raincoats your best friends to avoid putting your hair in danger. l Rinse your hair with a gentle shampoo and use conditioner if your hair gets wet in the rain. l While travelling by public transport or on a two wheeler, keep your head covered with a scarf. This protects hair from probable damage. >> Don’t use too many hair styling products during the monsoon

Damp, frizzy hair, dandruff and split ends go hand-inhand with the monsoon, so you need to take extra care of your hair in this season. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how to keep it healthy

F

or most of us, the monsoon means split ends, frizzy hair and sometimes, even infections and seasonal dandruff for an unlucky few. And guys, you need to pay attention too, because while you may not be worried about dull, lifeless hair that comes with the season, we’re sure you don’t want to be bogged down by seasonal dandruff! To help you out, we speak to Dr. Manjiri Patankar Puranik, the founder of InstaSculpt, to find out how you should be taking care of your hair during the rains.

tips & triCks Here are a few sure shot ways to keep your hair looking great this season: l Tone down or avoid using hair styling products during this season, especially those that are heat related. l Use a mild shampoo with conditioner. l Drink plenty of water and eat proteinrich foods (such as salmon, eggs, carrots, whole grains, dark green vegetables, kidney beans, nuts, low-fat dairy products) to keep your hair healthy and shiny during the monsoon. l Don’t tie your hair when it’s wet. Also, avoid brushing it till it dries. If you need to, use a wide toothed comb.

Bandipora killings: Protesters attack army school S

Govt to seek aid from WB, ADB to rebuild Uttarakhand

WATER WAYS… Flood affected people row a banana raft to move to safe place at Bongaon village in Nagaon, Assam on Monday.

N

EW DELHI: Government will seek financial aid from multilateral bodies like World Bank and Asian Development Bank for reconstruction and rehabilitation in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said on Monday. He said funds will not be a constraint for rebuilding the mountainous state which had witnessed the worst ever floods last month that killed several hundreds and destroyed properties worth crores. “We are trying to develop a (financial) package for rehabilitation and reconstruction for which we will go to multilateral bodies, like we did in Tsunami case,” Chidambaram told PTI.

“Prime Minister has already announced Rs 1,000 crore. Different ministries are using their own funds. Tourism has announced Rs 100 crore. Funds will not be a constraint. I have said it on the first day,” the minister said Besides seeking aid from these multilateral agencies, the government will soon sent a joint team of Finance Ministry and Home Ministry to discuss with Uttarakhand state officials the redevelopment plan for the calamity-hit state. “What I have approved is that a team from the Finance Ministry and Home Ministry will go to Uttarakhand to sit (and discuss) with Uttarakhand Government officers,” Chidambaram said.

In view of the gravity of the situation, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had last month announced financial support of Rs 1,000 crore to Uttarakhand for disaster relief, of which Rs 145 crore was released immediately. Singh had also announced ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to families of those who had lost their lives and Rs 50,000 each to the injured, from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). The government had also decided to provide from the PMNRF, an exgratia assistance of Rs 1 lakh each to those whose houses have been completely destroyed and Rs 50,000 each to those whose houses have been damaged.

RINAGAR: Protesters on Monday attacked an army school and made a vain bid to set it ablaze over the killing of two youths in alleged army firing which Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said negated attempts by Centre to bridge “emotional distance” between Jammu and Kashmir and rest of the country. The attack on the school in Hajin area of Bandipora district took place even as normal life across Kashmir Valley was affected due to the strike called by separatist groups to protest against the killing of the two youths in the district. “A group of miscreants tried to set a school building on fire at Hajin but the blaze was put out by fire tenders in time,” a police spokesman told PTI. He said there was no major damage to the building by the miscreants who were chased away by law enforcing agencies. However, sources said furniture of two class rooms was damaged in the incident. Omar while expressing his outrage at the ‘tragic’ and ‘avoidable’ incident symbolically referred to the launch of rail link between Banihal in Jammu with Qazigund in Kashmir Valley five days ago. “The death of two youngsters at the peak of their lives and with so much to look forward to is tragic. They lengthen the symbolic shortening of the emotional distance, made possible

by the railway tunnel, between Kashmiris and the country,” the Chief Minister said. “I do not have the words to express my grief and outrage over this gruesome incident that was eminently avoidable and needless,” Omar said in a statement released by his office. Omar said the death of two youth has hardened his resolve and determination to make the state of Jammu and Kashmir into an example where life is sacred and the right to life is protected by the law. Omar said his words are not meant as rhetoric to heal wounds that will never get healed, but are an attempt to shoulder and bear the grief of the bereaved families and console them. “I also laud the bereaved families and the communities of which the boys were part of, for maintaining a sense of proportion and calm in the face of adversity and a tense situation, and not allowing their sentiments and emotions to be taken advantage of and exploited,” he added. Shops, business establishments, educational institutions, banks and private offices remained closed due to the strike called by separatist groups. Public transport was off the roads in most parts of the Valley but buses carrying government employees to Civil Secretariat plied at the designated time in the morning.

Diesel price hiked Pak intruder killed in Poonch J by 50 paise per litre N

EW DELHI: Diesel price was yesterday hiked by 50 paise per litre, the sixth increase in rates this year.

The increase in rates, which are excluding local sales tax or VAT, will be effective from midnight tonight, Indian Oil Corp, the nation’s largest oil firm, said. Diesel in Delhi will cost Rs 50.84 per litre from Tuesday as against Rs 50.26 currently. Oil firms on Saturday hiked petrol price by Rs 1.82 per litre, excluding VAT, as rupee depreciation made import of raw material (crude oil) costlier. State-owned oil firms had been in January authorised to raise diesel prices by up to 50 paisa per litre every month till entire losses on the fuel are wiped out. Diesel price was last hiked on June. In Mumbai, price has been hiked by 62 paise to Rs 57.61 while in Kolkata it will cost Rs 55.16 a litre from Tuesday as against Rs 54.57 currently. Chennai will see a price increase of 61 paise to Rs 54.15 a litre. Despite the sixth increase in diesel rates, oil firms are losing Rs 8.10 per litre on the nation’s most consumed fuel.

Key takeaways from management meet Revenue growth to soften: Following strong 24% growth in FY13, Zee’s advertising revenue growth is expected to soften in FY14. However, the growth is expected to surpass the estimated industry growth rate of 8-9% driven by rate hikes, the scaling up of new channels and more India cricket matches on sports channels. We have factored in 12% growth for FY14. Subscriptions revenue growth would slow down due to lower subscriber additions by DTH operators, a lag in realizing the full benefits of digitization in phase and customary delays in digitization, to normalise in phase II (as in phase I). We expect 18% growth in subscription revenues in FY14. Margins to be broadly stable: Sticky losses from new businesses and sports would weigh on margins. Non-film content costs are likely at a normal rate, while film costs are expected to come at a higher rate. Flagship channel Zee TV now carries 29 hours’ original programming. The company may opportunistically consider raising this. On film-content acquisition, it would adopt a more balanced approach, unlike the aggressive one of some of its peers. Our take: The stock trades at 25x one-year forward P/E, vs 16-29x in the past two years. Valuations may be sustained on the brighter outlook regarding adspend and cable TV digitization.

Nirmal Bang calls a ‘Buy’ on Crompton Greaves CMP: Rs. 90

Target Rs. 105

Outlook: The performance of CGL was severely impacted in FY13 due to restructuring costs of its Belgium unit (Rs2.3bn), employee severance costs (Rs1.2bn) and pricing pressure in western Europe. This led the international operations of the power systems segment to report an operating loss of Rs3.5bn in FY13 corresponding to operating margin of (7.6)%. However, after the restructuring exercise, cost savings to the tune of Rs1bn per annum is likely, as per the management. In addition, relocating of the plant to eastern Europe would reduce manufacturing costs. Consequently, we expect operating margins of (2.5)%/2.0% for FY14E/FY15E, respectively, for international operations of the power systems segment. Recovery in operating margin will be key valuation driver for the stock, in our view. In addition, CGL continues to offer healthy revenue visibility driven by its strong order book position at Rs91bn as of end FY13 and also witnessed improvement in working capital position in FY13 driven by sharp reduction in loans and advances and a healthy fall in debtor days - from 102 days in FY12 to 95 days in FY13. We have retained our target price of Rs105 on CGL based on 12xFY15E EPS. However, our rating on CGL stands upgraded to Buy from Hold after the recent correction in the stock price.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Manufacturing PMI Implies Weak Growth Outlook

India’s manufacturing PMI increased marginally to 50.3 in June from 50.1 in May, but still remains lacklustre thanks to a decline in new orders – the first in four years – with power shortages continuing to hurt output growth. Moreover, input prices rose in the wake of recent sharp INR depreciation even as weak domestic demand restricted output prices. “Muted PMI readings over the last few months suggest a much bleaker growth outlook with our revised FY14 GDP growth estimate at 5.3% now, says Religare Research in a just released report. According to it “analysis of global PMI data also suggests weak manufacturing activity across the board. Countrywise, while Russia, Japan; Eurozone and India have posted improved PMI readings, China, Germany and the US have recorded declines with the biggest increase shown by Russia and /decrease by China.

Answering the question on how he plans to survive in an environment of

complex regulations and high fuel cost, Fernandes said that he is not bothered with high fuel costs and as far as regulations are concerned, “I am going to follow them,” he said. The airline has its crew in place and waiting for the operating permission before going ahead. This low-cost airline will allow 15 kg per person baggage free plus will initially market itself on lines of Air Deccan by distributing free tickets.

Higher Natural Gas Price Is Credit Positive For ONGC & RIL, Says Moody’s By A Business Reporter

L

ast Thursday, the Government approved a new gas pricing formula that doubled domestic natural gas prices to $8.40/million British thermal units (mmbtu) from $4.20/mmbtu. “This price increase is credit positive for the oil and gas companies that produce and sell gas domestically under production-sharing contracts with the government. Higher gas prices will result in higher revenues for Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Reliance Industries The higher prices should also encourage them to increase exploration and production activities in India.” Says

Moody’s in a just released report. It expects ONGC’s revenues to increase by $1.5-$2.0 billion and RIL’s revenues to increase by $300-$500 million in fiscal 2015, ending 31 March 2015, based on its estimate of their gas production between April 2014 and March 2015. ONGC and RIL reported revenues of $29 billion and $73 billion respectively in fiscal 2013. The increase in revenue could be even higher over the next few years; as production of domestic gas increases with new discoveries, every billion cubic meters of gas produced will result in incremental revenue of $150 million. The revised prices become effec-

tive 1 April 2014, or after the expiry of the current price tenure, and will be based on a trailing 12-month average of the volume-weighted price of the US Henry Hub benchmark, the UK’s National Balancing Point and netback equivalent prices for Japan Custom Cleared prices and the volume-weighted netback price of Indian liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. Although the market-linked gas prices will expose ONGC and RIL to price fluctuations and more volatility in earnings, Moody’s expect prices to remain well above the current $4.2/mmbtu, which will increase both companies’ revenues.

NEWS IN BRIEF ‘Rangkarmi’ launched

AMAZING DANCE ON WHEELS

By Vijay Shanker

N

ATIONAL Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and Ability Unlimited Foundation (New Delhi) presented a unique and unusual programme entitilted ‘Dance on Wheels’ at the Tata Theatre. The performance received a standing ovation as it was extraordinary and scintillating. Ability Unlimited Foundation has been established by accomplished classical dance exponent and choreographer Syed Salluddin Pasha with the intention of encouraging and promoting the talent of youngsters who have physical disability but are completely able to perform with devotion and complete involve-

ment that is really startling, hence the dancers dance on the wheelchairs.. The programme commenced with two dancers on wheelchairs portraying a Sufi prayer. Besides establishing the divine quality of the programme, it was exciting to watch them pray while the wheelchairs were in rotatory motion. The other numbers included yoga on the wheels where the dancers dance with perfect co-ordination and support, are in a position to perform varied ‘asanas” including the most difficult ‘shirsasana’ wherein the dancer is in upside down position, winning thunderous applause from the audience. Besides the Bharata Natyam number, the Varnam wherein the dancers danced to perfect

rhythm, while the rotation of the wheelchairs was adjusted accordingly, rare feat that was executed with great determination and enthusiasm. One of the lead dancers tripped twice as force was one sided, hence the balance was disturbed but he immediately got up within seconds, a rare wonder for most spectators, this scene created such an impact on the audience, hence brought tears in my eyes. The piece-de-resistance of the evening was the portrayal of the Bhagavad Gita pertaining to the battle in Kurukshetra, incorporating the reluctance of Arjuna and ultimately his victory over ‘adharma’. The role of Arjuna was played by Gulshan wherein he uses his crutches as the weapon to fight against Kauravas.

Luminaries from Marathi theatre like producers Lata Narvekar, Sudhir Bhat, make-up veteran Pandharinath Jukar, director Vijay Kenkre, film critic Kamlakar Sontakke, director Sanjeev Kolte, producers Shashi Mittal and Sumit Mittal were present at the movie launch of Marathi movie ‘Rangkarmi’, starring Dr. Amol Kolhe, Mohan Joshi, Sharmishtha Raut, Sheetal Dhabholkar and directed by Sanjeev Kolte, held at Hotel Kohinoor Park, Prabhadevi, Mumbai. The film is about the lives of stage artistes.

‘Rajbhasha’ song recorded

The sixth song recording of Twenty seven December Productions and director Nyaneshwar Margaz’s ‘Rajbhasha’ was held under the baton of Parikshit Bhatkande and sung by Avdhoot Gupte and Madhura Kumbhar with lyrics by Arun Mhatre, which will be a climax song. The film stars Vishakha, a former child star in a pivotal role.

Mahalaxmi’s Melody By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

To marry or not! P

RODUCERS Priya Theaters and Omkar Productions’ new play ‘Amhi Lagnashivay’ premiered on July 1 at the Vishnudas Bhave Auditorium, Vashi to a great response. The play is about three men in the Ghodepatil family, whose deaths after their marriages, are predicted by their uncle. One of them actually dies in an accident after his marriage giving the other two cold feet. The entire play is based on their efforts to avoid getting married. Do the other two marry? What happens to them? The play anchored by Mahesh Manjrekar stars Santosh Mayekar in the lead role along with Rahul Gore, Ganesh Jethe, Prafull Ghag, Shweta Gharat, Mahesh Dev, and Varsha Kambli, with Hemant Bhalekar as the director and Anand Mhasvekar as the producer.

AHALAXMI SHENOY, a vocalist from south Karnataka, was featured by Kalabharati in its morning concert at the Karnataka Sangha. The spread of Hindustani music is generally restricted to the northern districts of Karnataka like Hubli and Dharwad, while South Karnataka is dominated by Carnatic music. Mangalore, one of the major cities in southern Karnataka, has produced a great master like the late Chidananda Nagarkar, who was a splendid vocalist. Tabla player Omkar Gulwady, as well as Bhimsen Joshi clone Upendra Bhat, also hail from this city. Mahalaxmi Shenoy is another talented classical singer from Mangalore. One of the main reasons why her music appeals to the audience is its resemblance to the music of the popular star, Perveen Sultana. Shenoy provides glimpses into Sultana’s gayaki in a manner which people find admirable.’”I have not learned from her. She has showered her affection on me. I keep hearing her recordings and studying them,” said Shenoy in a telephone interview from Mangalore. Shenoy first trained in Carnatic music from Vyaskrisna Upadhyay, a local musician from the city. “I learned this style for five long years. Even as I was learning it, Hindustani music kept beckoning me. I thought that it was necessary for me to learn Hindustani music and

that would give me an opportunity to realize my potential as a singer and as an individual,” she said. Shenoy then learned from Ramrao Nayak from Goa. He is an exponent of the Kirana as well as Agra gharana. Shenoy later came in contact with the world renowned and Grammy award winning guitar player, Vishwamohan Bhatt and has been learning from him for the last thirteen years. Bhatt is an instrumentalist and Shenoy is a singer. How does learning from an instrumentalist then, work for a singer? We have seen many examples of instrumentalists teaching vocalists, though these are rare. Ravi Shankar taught Samaresh Choudhury. A harmonist like Arvind Thatte with a research bent of mind also guides a young singer like Anuradha Kuber. Sitarist Arvind Parikh who is a veteran exponent of the Itawa gharana has taught singers like Purvi Parikh or Ramakrishna Das. In this programme, she sang a khyal in the raga ‘Gujri Todi’. The bandish ‘Ja Ja Re’ was set to a slow ek taal. Mahalaxmi also gave due importance to the note komal rishabh and komal dhaivat. ‘Aaj More Ghar Aavo’ the drut bandish composed by Aman Ali Khan of the Bhendibazar gharana was also a remarkable performance.

Dr. Salil Kulkarni’s new music album with songs sung by the great Lata Mangeshkar herself and under her own LM label was unveiled at the hands of her younger brother, music composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar at the Ravindra Natya Mandir recently. Present on the occasion were singer Usha Mangeshkar, music composer Mayuresh Pai who heads LM Music and Vishwas Joshi of Fincraft Media Entertainment.

Film on Hutatma Bhai Kotwal

By Sandeep Hattangadi

R

ECENTLY, many films have been made against the backdrop of education and the lack of basic educational facilities in villages. Now, Shantanu Tambe’s ‘Majhi Shala’ deals with the same subject, albeit with some skullduggery. Ramchandra Tulaskar (Arun Nalawde) is a bright boy whose father is a farm worker. He wants to study and struggles to do so. However with the help of a kind teacher (Jayant Sawarkar), he completes his studies taking a stern vow to build a high school in his village. He has an understanding wife (Alka Kubal Athalye) who supports him in all his endeavors, as he seeks help from all quarters

OF SCHOOLS AND GHOSTS

to make his dream come true. The local minister (Devendra Dodke) however, is not interested in a small school and would rather have cash rich public schools. He therefore refuses to help Ram out. One fine day, Ram leaves for Mumbai to get aid for his school only to have his bus meet with an accident. He passes away, but his spirit lives on with the sole objective of building the school. Ultimately, a surprised police officer and minister agree to fulfill his dream and construct the school.

A film on the well-known freedom fighter Hutatma Bhai Kotwal is being planned by F.M. Illyas of ‘Arjun’ fame. The film will be made on a big international scale and will reach out to a pan Indian audience.

IN BRIEF Payal, Manasi cause major upsets

MUMBAI: Payal Bohra and Manasi Chiplunkar toppled top two seeds Dyuti Patki and Srushti Haleangadi on their way to the sub-junior girls singles final of the JVPGC All Mumbai Ranking table tennis tournament held at Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club. Both fought back from the brink to emerge winners. Payal undeterred by Dyuti leading 2-1, eschewed her penchant for allround attack and instead waited patiently for Dyuti’s loose returns to score a terrific 13-11, 6-11, 7-11, 11-4, 15-13, 15-13 victory. Mulund’s Laxmibai School’s Manasi, who initially looked ill, was at ease against Srushti’s unorthodox backhand jabs which saw her racing to 3-0 lead. Even in the fourth game Srusthi appeared to be coasting to a straight win, but it was not to be as Manasi played positively right through, using her forehand top-spinners with deadly effect to notch a 15-17, 6-11, 11-13, 12-10, 12-10, 11-9, 11-9 win. However, the women’s singles saw the top two seeds, Shweta Parte ousting Sanjana Choudhary 11-4, 11-5, 11-4, 11-3 and Charvi Kawle, though a bit erratic against 14-year-old junior Siddhi Kolekar triumphed 11-7, 11-6, 11-4, 11-7 to move into the semifinals.

Results: Women’s singles (Quarterfinals):Shweta Parte bt Sanjana Choudhary 11-4, 11-5, 11-4, 113; Charvi Kawle bt Siddhi Kolekar 11-7, 11-6, 11-4, 11-7; Mrunmayee Mhatre bt Ashlesha Trehan 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10, 11-6; Shruti Borkar w/o Tanmya D’Souza. Sub-jr girls singles (semifinals): Payal Bohra bt Dyuti Patki 13-11, 6-11, 7-11, 11-4, 1513, 15-13; Manasi Chiplunkar bt Srushti Haleangadi 15-17, 6-11, 11-13, 12-10, 12-10, 119, 11-9.

Badminton tourneys at JVPGC, CCI

MUMBAI: Top players of suburbs will be seen in action in the Li-Ning Mumbai Suburban District Badminton Championship to be held at Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club from July 10 to 14. The event will be held in 20 categories, beginning from Under 10 to Plus 45 Veterans singles and doubles. “Being the selection tournament, for both the junior and senior district teams for the state Inter-district tournaments to be held at Raigad and Parbhani respectively later this year, we expect around 500 entries with some of the suburbs based country’s top players participating,” said Anil Mahesh, the president of the MSD.

Praveen eyeing India comeback through domestic season

NEW DELHI: Out of the national team for more than a year, fast bowler Praveen Kumar has set his eyes on the 2013-14 domestic season to make a comeback to the Indian team. "I am fit. I have fully recovered from my tennis elbow. I am bowling well these days. I am now eying a comeback to the Indian team by putting up a consistent performance in the domestic circuit," said Praveen at the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board awards. Praveen, who missed the 2011 World Cup, had fruitful tours of West Indies and England in 2011, but then missed the tour of Australia due to a injury. He played in the Commonwealth Bank series, the 2012 Asia Cup and the this year's IPL, but due to a dip in form he has not played any international cricket since then. Praveen also lauded Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led young Indian team for winning the just-concluded ICC Champions Trophy.

don best, having made the quarter-finals in 2006 and 2010. 2007 Wimbledon runner-up Marion Bartoli is into the quarter-finals with a convincing win over Knapp. Bartoli will face the lone American in the men's or women's singles Sloane Stephens. Laura Robson's superb run came to an end when she was beaten in straight sets by Estonian Kaia Kanepi 7-6, 7-5. Sloane Stephens, a 20-year-old from Palm Springs, Florida, seeded No.17, reached the quarter-finals for the first time with a 4-6, 7-5, 61 win over Monica Puig of Puerto Rico. Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens is through to her first Grand Slam quarter-final after beating Flavia Pennetta. The No.20 seed won 7-6, 6-4 and will now face Petra Kvitova.

German Lisicki stuns World No1 6-2, 1-6, 6-4

L

ONDON: Germany’s Sabine Lisicki caused one of the biggest shocks in recent history in the women's event as she upended the five-times championSerena Williams 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. The 24th-seeded German trailed 3-0 in the final set but stormed back to dump out the World No1 and end the American's winning streak at 34 matches. As Lisicki's forehand slid away for a winner on her second match point, she fell face down into the grass on Centre Court. Williams had been the overwhelming favourite for the title and despite looking tight and nervous at times, seemed a certain winner when she put together nine straight games to level the match and lead 3-0 in the third. But Lisicki fought back brilliantly and, as Williams faltered, she served out for victory, a place in the last eight and the biggest win of her career. It was billed as the battle of the serves but at first it seemed more like a battle of nerve and unusually Williams was found wanting. Visibly tense, her footwork was sluggish, her serve was off and her returns were wayward. Lisicki, a semi-finalist here three years ago, had beaten the reigning French Open champion three times here in the last four years and seemed in the mood to do it again as she broke twice to take the opening set, pounding heavy serves and belting returns to the feet of the American. Williams was fretting, shouting at herself and generally seemed tight but as she has done so many times during her career, she found her game when she needed it most. Cutting out the errors, she strung together 14 straight points from 0-1 in the second set to take charge and she won nine straight games to level and

The match looked over but, out of nowhere, Williams got tight again and began to push, allowing Lisicki back in. The American led 4-2 in the third but Lisicki broke back again to get back on terms at 3-4, leaving her on the ground with a stunning forehand pass. Kalmadi ousted from AAA, loses Presidential election P

UNE: Scam-tainted Suresh Kalmadi was ousted as the President of the Asian Athletics Association after he lost his reelection bid to Qatar's powerful rival Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad in a tight contest, bringing an end to the veteran administrator's 13year reign at the helm. Kalmadi, who was jailed and later released on bail for his alleged role in the Commonwealth Games scam, lost 18-20 in the presidential elections held on the second and final day of the AAA Congress at a five-star hotel. All the 45 member countries of the AAA voted through secret ballot in the presence of international parent body IAAF chief Lamine Diack. There were seven invalid votes. Each country has one vote in the election. Kalmadi, a former Indian

Olympic Association President, will also lose his membership of the IAAF Council which he has been holding since 2001 as he is no longer an area representative from the continental body. The defeat also marked the end of 69year-old Congress MP's career as a sport’s administrator as he has already quit from any such post

in the country last year after he was charge-sheeted and jailed for his alleged role in the CWG scandal. The electoral reverse has now led to speculation on whether he would now announce retirement from sports administration since he no longer has any posts. He will though automatically become a life president of the AAA, an honorary post given to all past presidents, and can attend the Congress of the continental body without any voting rights. Qatar Athletics Federation President Al Hamad, who is also the incumbent senior vice-president of the AAA as well as the IAAF, will hold office for just two years instead of four. An AAA source said that the term of its president was curtailed so that it runs concurrently

with that of the IAAF chief and it will revert to four years from 2015 onwards. "Al Hamaad will be president for only two years as AAA is changing cycle so that it is in sync with IAAF from 2015," the official said. Incumbent IAAF chief Lamine Diack's term runs from 2011 to 2015. Kalmadi's loss in the election is a big disappointment for him considering that the Congress of the AAA was being held at his home town, which he is representing in the Parliament, and Asian Championships begin here from July 3. It's a sort of history repeating itself after 13 years as Kalmadi had ousted the then incumbent Bob Hassan of Indonesia in a tight presidential election in Jakarta in 2000.

confedshorts BRAZIL, SPAIN IN SHIRTS GIFT TO MANDELA RIO DE JANEIRO: Confederations Cup finalists Brazil and Spain are gifting autographed commemorative shirts to ailing South African former president Nelson Mandela, FIFA president Sepp Blatter revealed ahead of Sunday's match in Rio. "To Mandela, a gift from Brazilian national team and wish you a good recover (sic)", read the inscription on the Brazil shirt which Blatter, flanked by Brazilian Football Confederation president Jose Maria Marin and Spanish counterpart Angel Maria Villar Llona, held aloft. Nobel peace laureate Mandela, who played a major role in the 2010 World Cup coming to South Africa - the first time the competition has been held on the African continent - is in critical condition in Pretoria where he was hospitalised on June 8 with a recurring lung infection.

NEYMAR IS GOLDEN FOR BRAZIL

RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazil star Neymar won the accolade of best player at the Confederations Cup after his starring role in a competition which culminated in a 3-0 stroll over Spain. Neymar scored four goals, including one in the final, but his all-round play suggests he can live up the hype as potentially Brazil's greatest star since Pele. The silver ball award went to Andres Iniesta, who struggled in a Spanish midfield which never found its game in the final - the usually incisive Barcelona star and his teammates could not conjure their usual dominance and seemed to have left too much out on the turf in edging Italy on spotkicks in the semi-final. Brazil midfielder Paulinho, who headed a semi-final winner against Uruguay, landed the bronze ball.

DEL BOSQUE: BRAZIL WERE BETTER THAN US RIO DE JANEIRO: Vicente Del Bosque was in no mood for making excuses after watching his Spain side crash to a shock 3-0 defeat against hosts Brazil. "Brazil were better than us and we have to congratulate them," Del Bosque said . The Spain boss also thought Fred's opening goal for Brazil, which came just two minutes into the game, set the tone for the evening and admitted the two other goals, scored by Neymar and Fred either side of half-time. "We had some bad luck at the start of the game, at the end of the first half and at the start of the second, but I don't want to make any excuses because they were the better team," he said.

MARACANA MAGIC AS BRAZIL STEAMROLLS SPAIN R IO DE JANEIRO: Brazil destroyed world and European champions Spain 3-0 to win a third straight Confederations Cup title with a dazzling display of football which left the Maracana Stadium in raptures here. The turbo-charged samba stars roared to victory yesterday with two goals from Fred and a stunning strike from Neymar, dominating a weary Spanish side whose strength was sapped after edging Italy on penalties in Thursday's semi-final. A miserable night for Spain also saw them miss a second half penalty when Sergio Ramos shot wide from the spot before Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was sent off for a professional foul

on Neymar. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said the result as the perfect fillip as he plots a course to an assault on next year's World Cup finals in Brazil. "People know a much tougher event is coming up (next year)," said Scolari. But he noted: "We can set out on the journey with a little more confidence." Spanish counterpart Vicente del Bosque meanwhile admitted his side had been outclassed on the night. The touchpaper for an electrifying evening at one of the most iconic venues in football was set during the pre-match ceremonies as Brazil's fans in a 73,531-crowd belted out a spine-tingling rendition of the national anthem. The stirring anthems came as po-

lice clashed with protestors outside the ground before kick-off, the latest in a series of violent confrontations which have dogged the tournament since it kicked off. With the euphoric stadium crowd behind them, Brazil raced into a 1-0 lead after only two minutes through Fred's first of the night. Hulk lifted

over a cross and Neymar slid a hopeful ball to the centre forward, who was prone in the box as he flung out his right leg to hook home from point blank range past helpless Spanish custodian Iker Casillas. Oscar then fired a low shot just wide after Fred played on a Neymar flick before a Paulinho chip almost embarrassed Casillas as Brazil poured forward, visibly boosted by the overwhelming din of support cascading down from stands. Spain briefly responded with a swirling drive from Andres Iniesta which appeared to be drifting just wide before Brazil keeper Julio Cesar pushed the ball away for a 19th-minute corner which Fernando Torres wasted.

Italy take bronze with shootout win over Uruguay S

ALVADOR DE BAHIA: Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon was the difference as the Azzurri took third place at the Confederations Cup after beating Uruguay 3-2 on penalties, the pair having been locked at 2-2 following extra time in Salvador. Although the eyes of 200 million Brazilians were fixed on an evening final between the hosts and world champions Spain, Italian and Uruguayan fans converged on the northern city yesterday for the bronze medal which Italy carried off after skipper and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon saved spot-kicks from Diego Forlan, Martin Caceres and Walter Gargano. He promptly slammed critics back home who had wondered why he was not able to stop any of Spain's seven penalties in the semifinal. "These things only happen in

Italy - people have a short memory there," raged Buffon after the 34year-old turned in heroics to seal victory. "I showed my critics," he added. "Today was a tough match and I had a lot to do out there," added the veteran shot-stopper.

Despite the early afternoon heat both sides turned in an entertaining contest as the Italians, edged out in the semi-finals by Spain also on penalties - came past rivals who had bowed to the Brazilians in their semi. Alessandro Diamanti looked to have won the game in normal time at the Arena Fonte Nova stadium when he swept in a curling free-kick just inside Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera's left-hand post in the 73rd minute. But Edinson Cavani crashed in a stunning free-kick of his own with 12 minutes remaining of normal time to level at 2-2 as the South Americans fought to end a poor run of six losses in seven bronze medal matches at World Cup, Copa America and Confederations Cup tournaments.

IN BRIEF ICC to decide on Amir using PCB's training facilities

KARACHI: The five-member ICC sub-committee in all likelihood will review whether certain clauses incorporated in Mohammed Amir's fiveyear ban for indulging in spot-fixing can be relaxed in order to allow the talented paceman opportunity to use PCB's training facilities. "The ICC, during the annual conference week, constituted a five-member committee that will review and recommend amendments to the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, and on recommendation from the PCB, will also provide its suggestions to the ICC board on the ban related to Mohammad Amir," a PCB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo. The ICC is unwilling to the reveal the names of those in the sub-committee.

Kapur to try and qualify for British Open, Jeev fails

LONDON: Shiv Kapur will try and earn a berth for the Open Championships as he tees up at the Local Regional qualifiers at Dunbar even as his celebrated compatriot Jeev Milkha Singh failed in his attempt at Sunningdale. Kapur, who has had mixed luck this season after losing his card last season, has won the Challenge Tour event in Gujarat and also finished 10th at the Lyoness Open on main European Tour this year. Kapur had played at the Open once in 2006, when he came through International Final Qualifier for Asia. Earlier, Jeev failed in an attempt to qualify for the British Open at Sunningdale.

Pak not getting any ICC event till 2023 disappoints Misbah

KARACHI: Disappointed with the ICC's decision to not award any major event to Pakistan till 2023, national captain Misbah-ulHaq blamed his team's recent slide on the lack of international cricket in the strife-torn country. "There is no doubt this team has suffered a lot because of no international cricket being played in Pakistan and to learn now that there are no international events until 2023 is very disappointing news for me," he said. Pakistan has not hosted any international cricket since the 2009 Lahore terror attack on the Sri Lankan team. The nation did not get any major event to host in the schedule finalised during the ICC Annual Conference in London last week.

Deaf lawn tennis player cries foul over SAI’s decision

CHANDIGARH: Sports Authority of India's (SAI) decision to restrict the Indian entries in the 22nd Deaflympics due to lack of funds has hit many players who have been robbed of an opportunity to represent the country at the quadrennial event starting in Sofia, Bulgaria from July 22. One such case is Parul Gupta, a tennis player with hearing disability, who is on the verge of missing out the games. "My daughter played eight nationals. She is playing tennis for the last ten years and her only aim is to represent country in an international event, but now it is shattered. She has decided not to play in future," Avinash Gupta, Parul's father said.

West Indies' batsmen Tino Best and Kemar Roach raise their bats after scoring the winning run off India's bowler Umesh Yadav during their Tri-Nation Series cricket match in Kingston, Jamaica.

WINDIES END INDIA’S WINNING STREAK

K

INGSTON: The Indian cricket team's nine-match winning run came to an end after the West Indies held nerve to snatch a thrilling onewicket victory over Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men in their ODI tri-series preliminary match here. Chasing a modest target of 230, West Indies made heavy weather of the chase despite a sparkling knock of 97 by opener Johnson Charles but finally managed to register their second win in the tournament with 14 balls to spare. With nine points from two matches, West Indies are in with a bright chance of making it to the finals. It was sweet revenge for the hosts, who had lost to India in the course of their unbeaten Champions Trophy triumph. Kemar Roach (14 not out) got himself a perfect birthday present as he guided West Indies by keeping cool lower down the order. He flicked Umesh Yadav (3/43) towards square leg to bring up the victory in a match where fortune swung like a pendulum. The foundation of the victory was laid by opener Charles who faced 100 balls hitting eight boundaries and four huge sixes. He added 116 runs for the fourth wicket with Darren Bravo (55) and the victory didn't look out of sight. The Indian bowlers made a fantastic comeback as they got some quick breakthroughs before Roach finally sealed it for the hosts. At the start of the chase, West Indies were in dire straits as they lost both Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels within the first five overs and were precariously placed at 26 for three. Yadav removed the opposition's best batsman Gayle (11) and followed it up with the wicket of Devon Smith (0) while

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled Samuels (1) to reduce West Indies to 26 for three. Gayle was dismissed when a delivery from Umesh rose awkwardly and it hit the upper portion of his bat. The resultant catch was taken by Suresh Raina stationed at short cover. In his next over, Yadav removed lefthander Smith with an inswinger while Samuels dragged one from Kumar back onto his stumps. Opener Charles, however, batted positively. The first six scoring strokes were boundaries as he punished both Yadav and Kumar. With minimum backlift and least footwork, Charles successfully hit through the line whenever it was slotted in his zone. He found an able ally in Bravo as the duo resurrected the innings. The 50 run partnership came off 70 balls. Bravo, who was slow to begin with but chanced his arms against Ravindra Jadeja hitting the bowler over his head for a six.

Other cricket boards too objected to DRS, say BCCI sources

MUMBAI: It was not only the Indian cricket board but few other boards too expressed reservations on implementing the much-debated Decision Review System (DRS) uniformly in all matches during the annual conference of International Cricket Council in London, sources said. "Not only India, but other countries too (objected to its compulsory implementation) because it is not foolproof and there is a financial issue (related to it)," BCCI sources said. The ICC conference concluded on Saturday. According to the sources, the cost involved in the implementing the DRS is USD 15,000-16,000 per day and the broadcast right holders are not willing to bear this extra cost. The BCCI has steadfastly refused to have DRS in any series involving Indian team barring events organised by the International Cricket Council like the World Cup, Champions Trophy and World T20 Championship.

The duo batted sensibly as the 100 came up in the 22nd over and Charles completed a well-deserved half-century off 60 balls. To celebrate his 50, Charles gave Jadeja the charge to hit him into the stands. The 100 runs for the fourth wicket partnership came off 131 balls and in the 26th over. With the pitch easing out a bit

Injured Dhoni ruled out, Kohli named captain KINGSTON: The Indian cricket team was dealt a major blow today with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni being ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing trination ODI series due to a hamstring injury, prompting the BCCI to appoint Virat Kohli as the stand-in skipper. Batsman Ambati Rayudu will be flown in as Dhoni's replacement. "Dhoni has been ruled out of theongoing tri-series in the West Indies, due to a hamstring injury. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked Ambati Rayudu as his replacement in the squad. Rayudu will join the team at the earliest," BCCI Secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement. "Virat Kohli will lead India in the

remainder of the tri-series," the statement added. Dhoni did not keep wickets against the West Indies during the team's tri-nation series opener in Jamaica yesterday after sustaining a hamstring injury while batting.

compared to first half, the West Indian pair didn't have any problems in negotiating the Indian bowlers. Spin twins Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin weren't as effective as one expected them to be. A desperate Virat Kohli, leading the side in regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's absence, brought back Yadav for his second spell but Charles greeted him with one of the biggest six of the match. Finally, after a 116-run partnership, Bravo was gone for 55 trying to dispatch a halftracker from Ashwin but only managing to find Shikhar Dhawan at short mid-wicket. The wicket rejuvenated the Indians as Ishant Sharma came back for his second spell and bowled a perfect length to induce an edge off rival captain Kieron Pollard which was smartly taken by Dinesh Karthik behind the stumps. From 142 for three, West Indies suddenly became 155 for five. Brief Scores: India 229/7 in 50 overs [Rohit Sharma 60, Suresh Raina 44, Darren Sammy 2/41] lost to West Indies 230/9 in 47.4 overs [Johnson Charles 97, Darren Bravo 55, Darren Sammy 29, Umesh Yadav 3/43] by one wicket.
