Civic body confirmed only 45 had died of the illness in 2012, but issued death certificates for 337 victims
OPINIONS Do you think bringing BCCI under the purview of RTI is a good move?
Bhai Mirlekar Special Executive Officer RTI will bring in pressure on the BCCI. No one knows what is going in the richest sports body of the country. This will help fix that.
Dashrath Pawar Student It is a very good move. BCCI takes subsidy from the state government and the central government so they should come under the preview of the RTI. Kajal Gohil Housewife BCCI is the richest sports body in the country. Of course they are equally corrupt but it cannot be proved as it was not under RTI. Now the picture will change. Sachin Anjan Service In my opinion it is a very good move. It will bring accountability and transparency in the organisation. MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 30, 2013 On being contacted, Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner said, “The death certificate is different from clinical investigations. It gives a probable cause of death, a broad idea. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the cause has been clinically established. It is the malaria death committee that does the clinical investigations for suspected cases of malaria and the figures given by them is what the BMC will go by. Praja has made erroneous assump-

hile the public health department of BMC is happy that its strategy to control malaria in the city has worked well, its methodology to count deaths because of malaria seems to be questionable after Praja Foundation, in its recent white paper ‘State of Health of Mumbai’ has revealed that there is discrepancy in the figures of death caused due to malaria in 2012. And the figures are coming from the same department of the BMC. The Praja report says that in the year 2012, the public health department registered 45 deaths due to malaria in the city and at the same time issued 337 death certificates that state malaria as the cause of death. “It is strange that the same department is giving out two sets of figures. This discrepancy will lead to a complacent feeling of malaria being under control. It is also misleading the public who will feel that now malaria isn’t a cause for concern. We agree that malaria is under control but there is much more that needs to be done. With regards to the figures, the BMC needs to put its act together,” said Nitai Mehta, Managing Trustee, Praja Foundation. “The BMC is considering only those figures that have been obtained from the malaria surveillance and conveniently overlooking the death certificates that state malaria as the cause of death, painting a false picture of the actual scenario. All deaths due to malaria must be counted irrespective of it taking place at a public hospital, private hospital or at

tions and the executive health officer will write to them and ask them to substantiate their claims.” To this Mhaske countered saying, “We got these figures through Right To Information (RTI). Does the BMC mean to say that they are giving out death certificates with a false cause of death? As far as the procedure goes, after the cremation, the concerned medical health officer (MOH) checks the pre cause and the symptoms that the deceased suffered from and then gives a cause of death certificate on a government of India letter head which is signed by him. So aren’t the mandatory checks done by the MOH? The BMC has to defend itself on this.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 30, 2013 By Prashant Hamine
T
he three days of deadlock over the debate on the Irrigation scams in the legislative council ended yesterday with the ruling CongressNCP alliance agreeing for a debate on July 30 on the opposition moved resolution. The government also agreed to the BJP-Shiv Sena-PWP led opposition demand for revocation of the suspension of senior Sena MLC Diwakar Raote. The truce was brokered yesterday by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Minister for Industries Narayan Rane. Amidst all this for better part of the proceedings during the day the opposition staged a silent sit in dharna inside the well of the house. Yesterday as the house reassembled after the weekend break, leader of opposition Vinod Tawde argued that the treasury benches were not allowing the opposition to raise the debate on the issue. Accusing the ruling alliance of throttling the voice of the opposition, he said that until and unless the government did not agree for a debate on
the irrigation scams, Adarsh issue and withdrawal of suspension of Raote, the opposition will not take part in further debate and would instead stage a dharna inside the house. Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh while urging the opposition to take part in the proceedings, adjourned the proceedings for
15 minutes. After the house reassembled Rane too urged the opposition to take part in the proceedings of the house. He added that the opposition could raise the debate using other legislative devices. Chairman Deshmukh described the ruling and opposition benches as the two wheels of parliamentary democracy and stated that they both need to function smoothly. Thereafter the chair adjourned the proceedings for second time for almost half an hour. When the house reassembled for the third time, panel chairman Mohan Joshi too urged the opposition to take part in the debate. He however proceeded with the debate on other business on the agenda. In a bid to break the deadlock Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated that the ruling

hief Minister Prithviraj Chavan Dr. Patangrao Kadam, and Minister of State for Forests, Mr U. Samant, will preside at an official burning of wildlife contraband, including tiger and leopard skins, and elephant tusks. This is an invitation-only event and is being held at the Sahyadri Guest House in Malabar Hill today at 10 a.m. and comes just one day after the launch of a new global save-the-tiger campaign called Leave Me Alone. This is a joint initiative of Sanctuary Asia and Save the Tiger, the Facebook tiger conservation social media platform with 2.7 million supporters with active support from the Wildlife and Forest Department of Gov-
ernment of Maharashtra. These organizations have come together in an education, awareness-building, and activist campaign to save India’s iconic national animal. July 29 was chosen as the day to launch the campaign because it happened to be the third annual Global Tiger Day, marking the international importance of the species. The tiger – India’s national animal, and an animal of enormous ecological significance for countless other species as well as Homo sapiens – is disappearing from India because of rampant poaching and widespread habitat destruction. There are an estimated 1,800 wild tigers in India today, down from approximately 100,000 in 1900. Mr. Bittu Sahgal, Editor,
Sanctuary will outline the crucial role the public must play in protecting the tiger and winning the war against poaching and uncontrolled destruction of habitat. The Leave Me Alone campaign aims to mobilize massive national and global public support for the tiger, and will make clear to India’s decision-makers the central role the tiger plays in protecting forests, and how tiger forests in turn provide India with clean water and a stable climate. The campaign’s name – Leave Me Alone – is designed to allow the tiger to speak for itself through its millions of supporters. oncerned over the security and safety of women on suburban local trains, Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe met Home Minister RR Patil on Monday and handed over a memorandum to him. The Sena move came after a man boarded the ladies’ compartment of a Western suburban local train and tried to molest a woman in on Saturday morning. “Not only the railway police, but also the manager of that respective station is equally responsible for the incident,” Gorhe said. Safety of women on local trains is the joint duty of the central and state governments, she said. The issue will be discussed in the Legislative Council on Tuesday, she told PTI.

fter the Delhi incident, where a biker who was performing stunts was shot dead by police in the wee hours of Sunday morning, the Kherwadi police initiated action against the stunt-bikers on the Western Express Highway (WEH), and booked eleven bikers at Kherwadi junction under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. It may be recalled that from time to time, the Kherwadi police station has been carrying out special drives to curb the high speed riding and stunts by bikers along the WEH. In another case, four youths, all college-goers under the age of 23, were cordoned off by cops when they were riding their bikes on one wheel, and arrested. They have been identified as Sonu Deepakchand Kanojiya (22), Danish Ayub Shaikh (18), Faizan Mehboob Alam Ansari (20) and Salman Parvez Shaikh (20). According to SPI Ashok Kadam from the Kherwadi police station, “After Delhi incident, we did not wait to receive any special order from our superiors, but acted against the bikers for riding on the highway negligently. The boys live in localities in Malad, Goregaon, Bandra and Jogeshwari. They were produced before the court and release on bail.” PSI Pravin Kharade from Kherwadi Police station said, “In the last two-three months, we have seized more than 40 bikes and have booked many, as we know that in the holy month of Ramzan, on big nights, many bikers come on to the roads and perform dangerous stunts. After the Delhi incident, we have decided not to allow scope for any kind of untoward incident.”

And 66% of Indians say it is hard for younger workers aged 25 years and below, to find a suitable job; 79% say they are forced to take a job below their education level. Over three-fourth (79%) of survey respondents also say it’s difficult for older workers to find a suitable job and 71% of them believe older workers are often forced to take jobs below their education level. The survey, published four times a year, making both local and global trends in mobility regularly visible over time, also shows that education alone may not be enough to land many younger people their first job. The minimal sample size is 400 interviews per country, using Survey Sampling International. In India, more than 600 interviews were conducted.

Besides these recent arrests, Chennai Super Kings owner Gurunath Meiyappan, who is son-inlaw of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President N Srinivasan and Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh, were also arrested in the case earlier and they are currently out on bail.

Though current recruitment practices are increasingly aligned towards relevant experience, as India moves up the value chain, there will be quite a few roles requiring specific skills backed by relevant education and training”. By age, relatively fewer older people (45 years & above) are inclined to move to another country for the right job than younger people. The survey also indicates that employees with lower education (88%) and high qualification (73%) are inclined to move to another country in comparison to employees with middle level qualification (56%).
Job security Vs Salary: In India, the preparedness of employees to exchange a part of their salary in return for securing the position is significantly high (69%) in comparison to the world average (39%). Interestingly, this inclination is higher (75%) among employees in the age group of 25 to 34 years. A majority of the mature employees are not keen to exchange a part of their salary to secure their position, which implies that their experience is invaluable. In the rest of the world, it is the reverse, where a majority of the employees would not be willing to compromise a part of their salary to secure their position in the company.
Views about Temporary Job: Of the respondents surveyed, 76% preferred to have a temporary job than stay without any job, which is lesser, compared to the world average of 88%. A majority of the respondents have said that they would use a recruitment firm

In India, 59% of the employees feel that temporary work is for young people whereas only 43% of the employees in rest of the world feel so. Interestingly, more female employees feel that temporary work is for young people (67%) as compared to male employees (54%). About 75% of the employees with lower educational qualification felt that temporary work is only for young people compared to those with mid (49%) or high education (60%). Mobility Index: Amongst all the countries surveyed, India has the highest index of 147. This is in line with the findings that emerged in all the previous thirteen quarterly surveys conducted since Q1 2010, though it has come down by 3 points from previous quarter (150). While the finding per se is not new, its consistent trend over thirteen surveys confirms that the war for talent continues to be a major challenge for organizations in India. Malaysia and Brazil follow India with indices of 138 and 134 respectively. In India, 91% of the respondents feel that experience counts more than education in finding a suitable job, which is slightly higher in comparison to the world average of 81%.
82% In India 84% of the respondents believe that it is good for the company to actively recruit younger people aged below 25.

he Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is ushering in green technology to protect the environment. It is changing conventional street lights (sodium) with LED bulbs, which give a white light, are environment friendly, long lasting and energy-saving. As of now, during the pilot project, over 600 such LED bulbs have been installed on street lights in areas near to the Thane Railway station. The TMC has plans to eventually install 33,000 such
bulbs across the city. By this year end, at least 5,000 such bulbs will be in place across Thane. According to officials, the installation of LED lights will reduce the burden of high power consumptions by street lights and the saved power can be used to light up rural areas of Thane. The Maharashtra State Electric Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL) provides free electricity to street lights under TMC, but many other parts of Thane district still face load shedding due to power shortage. According to Sunil Pote,

Nawaz Sharif ’s K-plan ready P
AKISTAN President Nawas Shariff appears to have got on well with the army. There seems to have been some understanding between him and the army. Before he became president, Sharif had declared that he would try to forge peaceful and cooperative ties with India. And he had also started that he would work for a peaceful solution to the Kashmir problem. According to reports, he has now got ready a K-plan which does not exclude the use of force and secret operations in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan is said to be using terror organisations like the ULFA. Of late, we see an escalation in infiltration across the LoC. One of the terrorists from Pakistan has been killed by our soldiers. Pakistan has violated ceasefire at the LoC as many as eight time during the last one week. With the help of the ISI which has already got a close understanding with pro-Pakistani elements, Pakistan hopes to increase militant activity in Kashmir. Kindly, Nawaz Sharif is quite pleased with the Chinese declaration that it will always be a closer ally of Pakistan. It is evident that Pakistan has already enlisted support from China and got a promise that it will side with it in the event of any conflict with India. What is quite surprising is that Nawaz Sharif has decided to try out the K-plan before setting his own house in order. His own life is in danger. An attempt to kill him was made only last week but that does not seem to have made him aware that a plan to curb internal violence need to be undertake first. Sharif has also to consider the serious question of ending operations by the United States in Afghanistan next year: US President Barack Obama may also end the huge funding to Pakistan – once it withdraws from the Afghan war.

HE Congress has set a bad precedent. The party has combined two positions: one is that of party official spokesman and the other that of Minister for Information and Broadcasting. Both have different roles. The official spokesman defends the stand the party takes, right or wrong. Minister for Information and Broadcasting is India’s spokesman, not that of one party. The first is nominated while the other is elected by the people. To mix the two is unfair to the occupant, who happens to be Manish Tiwari at present. He has been doing fairly a good job as the spokesman. Given a chance, he would have probably done even better. Broadcasting in India has not been able to shatter the fetters of officialdom for decades. Still worse is the telephone calls by a minister or a senior bureaucrat which changes the news bulletin even at the last minute.

nels do not go beyond the red line drawn for their guidance. It is no use rulers claiming that the government media is autonomous when they themselves do not allow it to be so. Two recent examples show how the ministry was out of depth. The death of 23 school children in Bihar following the mid-day meals was a tragedy which the private channels reported from every possible angle. In comparison, Akashvani and Doordarshan registered the event only. The official media was handicapped because Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may become the Congress ally in the 2014 elections. Take another example. The Central Bureau of Investigation has exonerated Pawan Kumar Bansal, former Railway Minister. Some new incriminating information has
Prasar Bharati Bill In the sixties, several activists agitated for autonomy of official media. Subsequently, the government relented and brought the Prasar Bharati Bill. It was diluted from the beginning. But when implemented, the Prasar Bharati became another department of the broadcasting ministry. Once I asked one Information and Broadcasting Minister why the Prasar Bharati was not on the pattern of BBC, the original idea, to eschew subjectivity or slant; the minister was frank enough to say that the government has to have its own set-up to disseminate its viewpoint when newspapers and television channels were privately owned. He did admit the criterion should be the objectivity, not where it comes from. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha channels, although run by public funds, appear to have less of government’s propaganda. Yet both of them have no news bulletins and avoid such topic that may embarrass the government. The channels also see to it that as far as possible they do not have critics in the news and views programmes. The two channels do not spoil the mould which they have developed, not too critical and not too distant from the government’s point of view. In a democratic polity, perception is most important for credibility. The impression is that the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha chan-
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar come out since. Yet, Manish Tiwari says on behalf of the Congress that the court is open to those who level charges. Both Akashwani and Doordarshan do not tell what the new charges which people want to know. If the Prasar Bharati had even a bit of autonomy, it would have done a better job. The government media tells only the Congress side and puts cold water on every other version. This was the reason why the activists started an agitation to purvey correct information in the country. Both the government controlled-radio and television reach far more population than all the other private channels put together. In the recent past, corruption has penetrated the government media as well. Just as the privately-owned media has ‘paid news’,
Philosophy of the soul E
verything living has soul, and it, as we have said, cannot exist without the presence of heat in the constitution. In plants the natural heat is sufficiently well kept alive by the aid which their nutriment and the surrounding air supply. For the food has a cooling effect [as it enters, just as it has in man] when first it is taken in, whereas abstinence from food produces heat and thirst. The air, if it be motionless, becomes hot, but by the entry of food a motion is set up which lasts until digestion is completed and so cools it. If the surrounding air is excessively cold owing to the time of year, there being severe frost, plants shrivel, or if, in the extreme heats of summer the moisture drawn from the ground cannot produce its cooling effect, the heat comes to an end by exhaustion. Trees suffering at such seasons are said to be blighted or star-stricken. Hence the practice of laying beneath the roots stones of certain species or water in pots, for the pur-
pose of cooling the roots of the plants. Some animals pass their life in the water, others in the air, and therefore these media furnish the source and means of refrigeration, water in the one case, air in the other. We must proceed-and it will require further application on our part-to give an account of the way and manner in which this refrig-
MATTER & SPIRIT eration occurs. A few of the previous physical philosophers have spoken of respiration. The reason, however, why it exists in animals they have either not declared or, when they have, their statements are not correct and show a comparative lack of acquaintance with the facts. Moreover they assert that all animals respire-which is untrue. Hence these points must first claim our attention, in order that we may not be thought to
both Akashvani and Doordarshan too carry motivated stories affecting its credibility. Yet it is beginning to be preferred by many because views and news are so mixed that it is difficult to separate fact from fiction. In-depth reporting is very limited in government media because even if a news editor feels like probing further, the fear of going wrong from the official point of view deters him from doing so. Somehow, those who occupy high positions in the Government labour under the belief that they—and they alone—know what the nation should be told and when. And they get annoyed if any news which they do not like appears in print. Their first attempt is to contradict it and dub it mischievous. Later, when it is realised that a mere denial will not convince even the most gullible, a lame explanation is offered that things have not been put “in proper perspective”. Probably, at that time, the government gets away with its version of the story. But what is not realised is that such methods only decrease the credibility of official assertions. Even honest claims of the government begin to be questioned. In a democracy, where faith stirs the people’s response, the government cannot afford to have even an iota of doubt raised about what it says or does. Somehow New Delhi is not conscious of this fact.
An unpleasant job In a free society, the press has a duty to inform the public without fear or favour. At times it is an unpleasant job, but it has to be performed because a free society is founded on free information. If the press were to publish only government handouts or official statements, there would be nothing to pinpoint lapses, deficiencies or mistakes. In fact, the truth is that the press is already too niminy-piminy, too nice, altogether too refined and too ready to leave out. The government should not ask for more. The combination of being the party’s spokesman and the minister of Information and Broadcasting is beyond me. Government may believe that it has got away with it because the act is many weeks old. The government does not realise that its credibility has come down several pegs than before. I really feel sorry for poor Manish Tiwari. make unsubstantiated charges against authors no longer alive. First then, it is evident that all animals with lungs breathe, but in some cases breathing animals have a bloodless and spongy lung, and then there is less need for respiration. These animals can remain under water for a time, which relatively to their bodily strength, is considerable. All oviparous animals, e.g. the frog-tribe, have a spongy lung. Also hemydes and tortoises can remain for a long time immersed in water; for their lung, containing little blood, has not much heat. Hence, when once it is inflated, it itself, by means of its motion, produces a cooling effect and enables the animal to remain immersed for a long time. Suffocation, however, always ensues if the animal is forced to hold its breath for too long a time, for none of this class take in water in the way fishes do. On the other hand, animals which have the lung charged with blood have greater need of respiration on account of the amount of their heat, while none at all of the others which do not possess lungs breathe. — Aristotle

Srini again at BCCI helm is unjust THIS refers to your report ‘Decks Cleared for Srinivasan’ to return as BCCI Chief’ (29 July). The BCCI has been exceptionally quick in bailing Srini out by releasing its probe report much before the police has cleared Guru and his accomplices. What was the hurry to release the report when the Mumbai Police says that they have sufficient proof to nail Guru? The whole probe drama seems to have been enacted in a hasty manner only to bail Sirini out. It only goes to confirm that there is something seriously wrong with the working of the BCCI who must be relieved to have been exempted from the RTI purview. Sirini does not deserve to be back to the post for several reasons including a clash of interests. Being the MD of India Cements which is a stake holder in the IPL franchise, he should not hold the office as his presence might influence its working. The manner with which the BCCI has gone cleared Sirini may not help as the mud around him will stick until all aspects of the issue are satisfactorily handled. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai
THE decision of the two-judge probe panel to give the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president-in-exile N. Srinivasan and his son-in-law
THIS is with reference to the report ‘Decks cleared for Srinivasan to return as BCCI chief’ (July 29). The verdict does not come as a surprise because it was known that the duo would come out of the internal probe unscathed, and it has gone exactly on the expected lines with clean chits galore! IT’S said that the common man can never understand a politician’s foresight. Everyone is so critical about the bad shape of the roads not only in Mumbai but all over the country. Only a politician can know and explain why potholes have been deliberately maintained. According to them, potholes are not just maintained for the ‘safety’ of pedestrians but also to ‘generate’ employment. beatable 3-0 lead in the series. India should have sent their ‘B’ side to Zimbabwe as it would have been a great learning process at international level and I thought a young Indian side could still have white-washed the minnows of international cricket. Indian cricket today is run by ‘jokers’ with no thought process and money minting being the key idea in team selection as well as commercial interest. The BCCI panel to look into the IPL matchfixing too is an eyewash as most bigwigs, including N. Srinivasan, his son-in-law and Rajasthan Royals owner Kundra have been given a clean chit when betting was clearly visible which led to fixing. Poor small time cricketers who were used as pawns would be made a scapegoat while the big guns would return to control Indian cricket in the days to come. Politicians and businessmen should be debarred from holding key Board positions in BCCI which should be governed by former cricketing legends like Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Bishen Singh Bedi etc. to give some credibility to Indian cricket and we can rule international cricket for a long time to come if we follow the professional and honest route top success. — S.N. All about saving Laxmi IT is indeed a superhuman effort of nearly 25 persons to sneak out a 5,000 kg tusker in a top secret operation. This is just to save the animal and not to make it suffer the fate that befell her companion Bijlee, who died of exhaustion and obesity in the month of June. The men executed a top secret mission and their task was to take away Laxmi, the ailing elephant in its teens vacated to a rehabilitation facility in Mathura. It took them nearly four hours to pack the animal with a height of over 11 ft. With heavy rains in most parts of the state, the need now has arisen to shut down most of these cattle camps. In all the 35 districts of the state, the average rainfall recorded so far has been 148.9 mm. The districts that have received good rainfall so far include two districts of Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane, Wardha, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Gondiya and Gadchiroli. Although the districts of Beed, Jalna, Latur, Osmanabad and Parbhani have received satisfactory rainfall, the rainfall has not been sufficient enough to raise the water levels in major and medium irrigation dams in Marathwada region.

This is part of a conspiracy. If Congress member Baba Siddiqui, who was far off from Darekar on the ruling bench, could hear what the MNS MLA has said, then surely it must have been captured by the CCTV cameras in the House.” The leader of the opposition sought CCTV footage of the incident and demanded that Darekar’s suspension be revoked. “This is a systematic attempt is to ensure that a debate on irrigation scam does not take place in the house. Dieticians, nutritionists, doctors and fitness experts know how to take care of their health and physical well-being. And diet plays a major part in that. So, what’s that one food that these experts would never eat? Dev Goswami & Priyanka Singh find out
W
hen it comes to your diet, heart health or even beauty, there’s a whole list of foods that are bad for you. But, have you ever wondered, what is that one food that scores the most number of criminal points? We asked health and beauty experts from across the city about the one food item that they consider to be the most harmful and avoid at all costs. Read on to find out about what they told us and the reason they avoid that particular food item.
For nutritionist Rashi Chowdhary it is fruit juices, both fresh as well as packaged, that top her list of foods to avoid. She tells us, “Fruit juice is nothing but sugar. Most of the vital nutrients are lost because of the oxidation process. The sugar rush causes an insulin spike and having unstable or high insulin levels leads to diabetes, obesity and heart diseases. A 200ml glass of orange juice has easily digestible ‘fast carbs’ that are equivalent to approximately 6-8 cubes of sugar. That’s like having a can of Red Bull or four Oreo biscuits! Eat the whole fruit instead.
Dr. Apoorva Shah, founder of Richfeel Health & Beauty Pvt. Ltd. He says, “Artificial sweeteners, such as sucrose, fructose and dextrose, destroy crucial vitamins such as E, K and C from the body, which are a must for healthy hair. Lack of such vitamins stops hair growth and makes them dull and fragile. So, make sure you use natural sweeteners, such as honey, as far as possible.
Holistic health guru and founder of 360° Gyms, Mickey Mehta says, “Refined flour is just a burden on the digestive system and is not conducive to good health. There are a plethora of wholesome, natural grains that you should opt for instead. Dr. Bindu Sthalekar, consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist at Hurkisondas Hospital & Skin Solutions Clinic, agrees with Mickey and says, “Refined flour is not only detrimental to your skin but also to your overall health. Refined flour and sugars are easily over-consumed and lead to a sudden rise in insulin levels which makes you feel hungry again soon.

was relieved of her problem without any major surgery (removal of uterus). Approximately 32-35 % of women between age of 35 years and above, suffer from different kinds of menstrual problems. The normal menstrual cycle should be in the range of 25 to 35 days with average bleeding for 4 to 5 days. The menstrual bleeding may differ with every individual. However,if the pattern changes suddenly as compared to the previous cycles,it should not be ignored. The cycles may become very heavy with passing of clots (lumps), or may become painful which was not earlier. Some women get bleeding or spotting in between the two cycles or after the sexual intercourse. There may be an intermittent pain in lower part of tummy with or without excessive vaginal discharge. In all these situations it is wise to consult an expert gynaecologist. The relevant investigations are needed which include a blood test, hormonal profile and transvaginal ultrasound. The problems could be an organic pathology like uterine polyps, fibroids or overall smelling of the uterus (Adenomyosis). It could be just a simple issue of pelvic infection which can be m a n a g e d w i t h medicines. The treatment for most of the problems will consist of minimally invasive key hole surgery (Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy procedures)one must not fear that every situations will warrant a hysterectomy (removalof uterus)The modern gynaecological modatities are aimed at a very conservative and tailor made approach for a woman.

She had noticed an increase in her tummy girth as well. Fitness expert and founder of JG’s Fitness Centre, Shalini Bhargava avoids one food but for a personal reason. She says, “I have an enormous sweet tooth and the one Indian sweet that I love the most is the Rajasthani Mawa Kachori. So, that’s what I avoid at all costs — I only indulge in it once every two years. It is fried, dipped in sugar syrup, made of maida and mawa, but absolutely lip smacking.
These drinks are the worst offenders according to nutrition expert Rakhee Todankar, from Gold’s Gym as well as consulting nutritionist at Metropolis Healthcare Ltd., Dr. Vandana Mathur. Rakhee says, “Soft drink intake has been linked with obesity in children and adolescents. Research shows a clear association of soft drink intake with increased body weight. Dr. Vandana further elaborates by adding, “Though they may seem inviting on a hot day, they are a huge health risk. They are loaded with sugar and devoid of any nutritional value. The consumption of these has been associated with obesity, messed up metabolism, kidney problems and tooth decay.
It might be everyone’s favourite snack, but for founder of InstaSculpt, Dr. Majiri Patankar Puranik, samosas are a treat that is best avoided. She says, “A Punjabi samosa contains potatoes, oil and maida, all of which are rich in carbohydrates, complex fats and starchy substances and lead to fat deposition, higher cholesterol levels and increased risk of facing cardiovascular problems.
Aakriti Kochar, a beauty and makeup expert at Oriflame India, feels that we are what we eat and believes that your skin is a reflection of that. French fries are at the summit of her top offenders. “Although we can pair them with a number of dishes or eat them separately as a quick snack, they are quite detrimental to our health. The oil causes skin breakouts and the salt leads to bloating. The amount of trans fat per intake is also alarming, she says.
We are sure that dermatologist, Dr. Madhuri Agarwal has very strong will power, as she avoids sugar as much as she can. She explains, “It has negative effects on the skin and can cause early ageing. It also worsens your skin texture.
Beauty manager Maureen Lock, from SAKS Hair and Beauty salon, tries to avoid processed meats. She tells us, “The one food that I stay away from is processed meat. This can be pepperoni, salami, sausages and other processed cold cuts. The reason behind this is that when the food is cooked and processed, it loses nutrients that are vital for your skin’s health. Chemicals and salt are also added to enhance the flavour, texture and to keep it fresh. These can have an adverse effect on your skin.
Praveen Tokas, a strength conditioning expert and celebrity fitness trainer, tells us that for him, white bread and white rice are foods that he always avoids. Praveen says, “These two food items are major contributors to insulin resistance, which is considered to be the prime reason of obesity and lifestyle diseases such as diabetes. Vandana Bhardwaj, managing director of Acolade Skin Care Cosmetics, is also against the consumption of white bread. She says, “White bread and refined flours are toxic for your body because they have been stripped of vitamins, minerals, fibre and nutrients.
CHANGE YOUR HEART‌.CHANGE YOUR LIFE.... The dramatic increase in the incidence of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) has led to an increase in morbidity and premature mortality in India. Several surveys conducted across the country over the past two decades have shown a rising prevalence of major risk factors for CHD in urban and rural population . As our economy has taken a hit-so has our Cardiovascular health-with the decline in the level of our cardiovascular well being paralleling the fall in the Indian rupee! Deaths from CHD rose from 1.17 million in the year 1990 to 1.59 million in year 2000 in India. An estimated 31.8 million people are living in India with CHD alone-which is a 10 fold increase over that 40 years ago. In India symptoms of CHD arise 10 years earlier than in the western world. It is predicted that by 2030 the years of life lost due to CHD will be greater in India than in China, Russia and the USA combined. These figures are scary and do point out to the fact that the call of the hour is to nip the evil in the bud! The patient often reaches the Cardiologist at a later stage of CHD, where only secondary prevention is possible. Remember the old adage-'Prevention is better than cure'. Its important for each one of us to have a comprehensive knowledge of the risk factors which contribute to CHD and take due precautions to keep ourselves healthy and fit! We all should aim today in making a concerted effort to decrease the incidence of CHD in India. So which are the most common risk factors contributing to CHD? Lets start by discussing the most dangerous one Smoking. Consumption of 20 cigarettes/day increases risk of CHD by 2-3 fold . In women on OC pills, smoking acts synergistically with OC pills, thereby further compounding the risk of heart disease .Smoking cessation decreases CHD risk by 36%. In a smoker relative risk decreases to that of nonsmoker in 3 - 5 years after cessation. Its imperative for us, to take a pledge today to stop this menace from destroying us all! Dyslipidemia that is derangement in lipid metabolism- is one of the most firmly established risk factors for atherosclerosis. Increased LDL, Triglycerides and decreased HDL promote atherosclerosis and the risk of heart disease. It is very important for us to get our Complete Lipid Profile checked and keep the same under control . A healthy diet and exercise regimen along with appropriate medications when required, can keep our Cholesterol levels under check . Hypertension-or High Blood Pressure confers silent cardiovascular risk . Hypertension is Systolic BP > 140 mm Hg or Diastolic BP > 90 . For the 40-70 years age group, each increase of 20 mm Hg in SBP or 10 mm Hg in DBP doubles the risk of CVD across a BP range of 115/75 to 185/115 mm Hg. Regular BP checks and an adequate control is essential. Home BP readings and 24 Hour Ambulatory BP recordings give us a better picture of the variability in our BP readings. Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading risk factors for Heart Disease. Individuals with Diabetes are high risk for CHD. Its important to keep the Blood Sugars levels under control by adequate medicines apart from Diet Control and Exercise. Regular checks of Fasting Blood Sugar and Post Prandial
Sugar levels along with HbA1 C(Glycosylated Hb-gives an average value of the blood sugar levels during the past 3 months) gives us an idea of the adequacy of the control of our blood sugar levels. Obesity is a Major risk factor for Heart disease .It is associated with Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and Dyslipidemia . BMI (Body Mass Index)is used as marker of total body fat and obesity. BMI >30 is defined as obesity; BMI 25 to 29.9 is called Overweight. Abdominal obesity adds to health risk of obesity .Waist circumference correlates with abdominal obesity. Adults with increased BMI have increased risk of Coronary Events. Diet and exercise are extremely important in reduction of weight. Sedentary life style increases risk of heart diseases. Regular exercise has beneficial effects on the heart . Studies have shown that a brisk walk for 30 min 5times/week decreases CHD risk significantly. It is important for us today to increase our daily activity level and decrease activities like watching television and surfing the web. The American Heart Association has said that one should 'make daily choices to move rather than be moved'. Mental stress is an extremely important factor contributing to the increasing risk of a Heart Attack. The rigors of work today-long working hours coupled with lack of sleep, mental strain ,and depression are some of the factors which have really sent the number of heart attacks in the young today skyrocketing! We need to pause -and really question ourselves- whether we are on the track today! Diet rich in saturated fat, trans fatty acids and dietary cholesterol is detrimental to our health. Saturated fat is present in dairy food ,milk ,butter, cream ,cheese, and animal fat. Trans fatty acids is present in processed foods. Fish consumption promotes CVS health .So its advisable to consume a diet low in saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and high in monounsaturated FA, fruits, vegetables and fish. How is it that a large no. of individuals falling prey to heart disease ,do not have any of the above mentioned risk factors? This brings us to certain novel new risk markers, which have helped us in redefining in our knowledge of CHD. Some of these like S. Homocysteine levels, Lp(a).,S. Fibrinogen and hs CRP are now routinely available as Laboratory tests. Evaluating these markers can shed light on the risk that an individual has for coronary events, over and above the conventional risk factors discussed. So we see that in the fast moving world of today, with the increasing trend in heart diseases-we have to really make a strong bid-to reduce the burden of CHD . And the task is not too tough-just following some basic steps outlined above-along with regular health checkups-can help us in fighting this scourge which is affecting mankind today.Remember - '’ You change your life by changing your heart And An ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure’’ Dr. VARUN CHAWLA DM(CARDIOLOGY);MD(MED) CONSULTANT INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST Email Id: varuncardio@gmail.com
All you caffeine addicts, pay attention. Trupti Tripathi, a nutritionist at Snap Fitness India, feels that a lot of your health issues will be solved if you stop or lessen your consumption of coffee. She tells us, “Even though coffee has antioxidants, if you drink too much it can cause wrinkles. This is a result of dehydration, which is bad news for your skin. Too much of coffee intake also increases the stress levels which might lead to overeating. Limit yourself to one or two cups a day.
Dr. Harshad G. Argekar MS(Orthopedics);Dortho;FCPS (Ortho); Fellow ASIF (New Zeeland) Associate Professor & Chief of Orthopaedic Spine Specialist; Joint Replacement Surgeon; Trauma Consultant joint and replacement & spine Surgeon What to Expect from Knee Replacement operation An important factor in deciding whether to have total knee replacement operation is understanding what the operation can and can't do. More than 90 percent of individuals who undergo knee replacement surgery experience a dramatic reduction of knee pain and a significant improvement in their ability to perform the common activities of daily living. However, knee replacement surgery will not enable you to do more than you could before your knee problem developed. For example if you could not run for 5 kilometers before your knee problem started, do not expect to do so after your surgery. Following surgery, you will be advised to avoid certain activities for the rest of your life including jogging and high-impact sports.Even with normal use and activities, an artificial joint (prosthesis) develops minimal wear over time. If you decide to participate in high-impact activities or are over-weight, this wear may accelerate and cause the prosthesis to loosen and become painful. With appropriate activity modification, knee replacement can last several years. How your New Knee is different You may feel some numbness in the skin around your incision. You also may feel some stiffness, particularly with excessive bending. These differences often diminish with time and most patients find these are minor compared to the pain and limited function they experienced prior to surgery. After knee replacement operation, you should be able to bend your knee
to right angle (90 degrees) by 2-3 weeks. Restoration of full motion of your knee (heel touching buttock) is difficult to achieve. The motion of your knee replacement after surgery is predicted also by the motion of your knee before surgery. Most patients can expect to nearly fully straighten the replaced knee
and to bend the knee sufficiently to go up and down the stairs and get in and out of a car. Since the scar is in front of the knee, kneeling can be uncomfortable but not harmful. After surgery, make sure you also do the following: Participate in regular light exercise programs to maintain proper strength and mobility of your new knee. Take special precautions to avoid falls and injuries. See your orthopaedic surgeon periodically for a routine followup examination and X-rays, usually once a year.

For some, one wash is enough, the flesh of your fruit or vegetable. while others need multiple washes to be made devoid of chemicals and dirt. Here’s a quick guide on washing your produce correctly. Washing leafy vegetables is quite a long process. When washing lettuce, you must chop off the head and remove the first layer of leaves before washing the rest a Don’t fill your sink or a large pot with water and let the few times more. Even produce bought from water. Repeat this process about four times. supermarkets needs to be washed thoroughly.
This category includes melons, cucumbers, citrus fruits and potatoes. All produce that falls under this category should be scrubbed with a brush. Waxy-skinned citrus fruit and cucumbers may have pathogens sticking to the exterior which need to be scrubbed off. You don’t have to use any cleansers for this; plain running water and a good scrub with a brush works well. If however, you are going to peel them, it would still be advisable to clean

Bunched fruits such as grapes and berries should be rinsed under running water in a colander. Repeat it at least three times.

e was told he could never be able to walk on his feet, or stand up like a normal person,Vijay's back was bent in such a way Dr. Suhas Shah that he could only M.S.(Ortho.), FAIS, FASIF(GERMENY), move on all fours, FELLOW IN LLIZAROV (USA, Italy) a condition called Website: www.suhasshah.com poliomyletis. After performing the www.ashwiniihospital.com Ilizarov surgery, he Email: drshahsuhas@gmail.com was a new man. He could walk. He could run. He was as normal as any of us are- so much so that his boss didn't realize he was the same man when we confidently walked into office one day. There are masses of people who suffer from similar genetic conditions, or have 'incurable' diseases that affect their bone growth; or those who have been in tragic accidents and doctors have recommended amputation of limbs- but they can be saved through this latest technique called Ilizarov surgery. It is a boon to those who are written off as 'hopeless cases' with crushed bones, loss of bones in limbs, etc. DrSuhas Shah, a leading specialist, one of the 7 in the country, finds this 'Russian surgery' helpful in many ailmentsdeformity correction, congenital anomalies of extremities, correction of polio deformities and shortening, complicated fractures, increasing the height or equalizing limb lengths, along with limb reconstruction. Trained under Professor Dror Paley at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and also under Prof. Cattaneo and Prof. Catagni who introduced this technique and its inventor, Prof. Gavril Ilizarov to the rest of the medical world, Dr Suhas Shah has treated more than 5000 patients for the past 23 years. The procedure involves the regeneration of new bone and soft tissue through the application of
controlled, mechanically applied tension stress- which in the layman, means that when the bone is forced apart to form fissures, or cracks of 1mm(called 'distraction'), the body produces new bone and tissue to fill up the empty space. Upto more than 12inches of bone can be formed in this manner. Though this process takes months, it produces dramatic results. The Ilizarov surgery can be used to cure a large range of medical conditions, especially in children, such as clubfoot, constitutional short stature, dwarfism, limbs of unequal length, bone infections and corrosion, intensive fractures and missing bone segments. The Ilizarov process has 3 stages, after the initial osteotomy (surgical cutting of the bone)- the latency period, followed by the period of bone distraction and the ending fixation period. The Ilizarov Fixator, which is an apparatus comprising a system of two or three circular rings, connected by steel rods, is a device attached to the bone with the help of 'Kirschner' wires. These wires hold the bone and fixator together in a series of different planes and loops.Dr. Shah, who has been using this technique at his Ashwini Accident Hospital, at Mahim, says that this technique is not as widely used since most practicing doctors themselves are not aware of this surgery and it's various advantages, and wrongly steer their patients in the direction of amputation of limbs. Dr. Shah hopes that this technique reaches more people, and that greater awareness is created so that more and more people opt for this surgery than to give up limbs that could be saved. Instead of leading burdened lives, and suffering in silence, they could be getting a new lease on life.

moStly as You really have to be more careful on your travels! You should be more aware of your surroundings and do better research in order to avoid any unforeseen accidents or bad food and drink. Read our tips below to have happy holidays without the stress and hassle of falling sick or getting into trouble.
6
Do thingS Slowly How can you be efficient if you do things slowly? Think of it this way. The faster you try to do things, the more mistakes you’ll make. Your assignment will come back full of errors and your dinner will burn. So, by slow, we don’t mean waste your time. You just need to concentrate on each task at hand so you do it well.
Say no Learn how to balance things. If you’re trying to juggle work, housework and picking up groceries at the same time, there’s no way you’re going to stay sane. Either delegate tasks or learn how to say no when someone puts something new on your plate that you can’t work into your system.
From food poisoning to illnesses and accidents, there are a lot of downsides to travelling without awareness. Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you find out whether you’re a safe traveller ittle local pubs with a specially made drink for the tourist in the room, exotic food from a street vendor and late nights dancing down the streets with the locals – sounds like the perfect vacation, doesn’t it? It can also be the most unsafe. While being overly cautious can ruin your holiday, not being aware enough can end up a lot worse. You’ve read about unfortunate travellers getting fatal allergies, food poisoning and deathly reactions from products, food and experiences abroad. Find out whether you’re a safe traveller and if not, read our tips below to become one:
moStly bs Congratulations! You’re not a fat talker. But beware, even if you don’t fat talk, you could be a victim of fat talk. So, encourage people around you to avoid focusing only on physical appearances and instead talk about some of the positive changes that can be brought about in your routines. If someone is a compulsive fat talker in the group, make an attempt to stop them because it is not only harming them, but also everybody else in your circle.
take breakS This may sound counter-productive, but plodding away is not going to help you be more efficient. You may think that sitting and staring at your screen all day means you’re a hard worker, but there’s a difference between working long hours and working efficiently. Small breaks in between tasks will help you re-focus and in turn, make you work faster on your next task.
strEss Don’t be iDle An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. We know we said take breaks, but don’t just sit around for hours on end doing nothing. It not only wastes your time, it also makes it harder to get back to work when you need to. Being active helps keep you on track, efficient and calm.
moStly as You definitely fall under the category of fat talkers. Watch your mouth otherwise you are going to end up causing some serious damage to your friends’ as well as your own selfesteem. Nobody likes a fat talker and you stand a risk of being disliked by your group of friends. Try engaging yourself in more positive talk such as charting out new diet plans or discussing a new workout regime you recently read about. Cutting at the fat talk is much easier than cutting the fat, so get on it before it gets to you.
>> To make sure you don’t fall ill on vacation, read our tips below
moStly bs You’re aware of your surroundings, know where to eat and drink and how to vacation in a foreign country without risking your health and safety. Go ahead and enjoy your next vacation, because you’re doing everything right.
Stay Safe on your travelS bottle Safe: It’s very important to drink safe water, because it’s the first thing that can make you ill. It’s always better to buy bottled water, but make sure that you get it from a reliable source and check that the cap is still attached to the ring. Often, bottles filled right to the top are refilled so avoid those. Also avoid tiny shops — always buy your water from a big department store or a reliable shop. heat & eat: If you can’t be too picky with your food, try to eat more hot food than cold. Cold food has high chances of being contaminated and making you ill. Some germs are killed when your food is heated. Stay away from exotic: We know that it’s tempting to spend your vacation eating exotic food, but we suggest avoiding anything that’s raw or undercooked, unless you’re in a very good restaurant that you know is licensed to sell food like that. Do research before you head out to eat. man with a plan: Speaking of research, have you done enough research before heading to your destination? In the digital age, there’s no excuse to not be well prepared. Make sure that you research each and every place you plan to
visit, even if it’s a restaurant or spa. Read customer reviews and not just the advertised slogans and pictures. Skip the juice: When you’re outside, as tempting as it may be, avoid juices that are made with water. You can, as we mentioned before, never trust the water — so be extra careful when you’re drinking anything outside. Also, avoid cocktails because you never know what can be mixed in them. Never leave your drink unattended to play it safe. Don’t get too colD: Ice can make you terribly ill. To stay safe, skip the ice in your drink. It’s a small price to pay for safety. be label wiSe: Don’t buy alcohol with unlabelled bottles because there have been several cases in Asia and Europe where methanol was mixed in instead of alcohol. Try to buy darker alcohol (clear alcohol is easiest to tamper with) and reliable brands. Stick to beer if you must have a drink, or buy your drinks from a reliable source. get buSy: Don’t visit empty restaurants. Food might be stale or tampered with. Visit popular, busy restaurants to stay safer during your visit.
the right phraSe: Don’t ever depend on anyone to translate for you when you’re in a foreign country. Having friendly locals translate your meals may be a great idea in theory, but it’s always better to know what you’re in for. Find out about the country before you visit, learn about the food and culture and if your memory fails you, always have a phrase book at hand so you can check things out before agreeing to them. Staying Sporty: If you’re in a country with a lot of adventure sports, remember never to go on any of them on your own, unless you’re certified or trained. Even when you’re with someone else, make sure that someone is a trained professional. Don’t opt for cheap deals and bogus looking activities, your safety is more important than your money. Spa Special: If you’re going to a destination where you’ll be getting spa treatments, find out in advance where the good places to get massages are. Smaller spas can give you rashes and skin infections and it’s always best to make sure you’re cracking your back and getting your bones broken. Also, avoid steams unless you can control the temperature yourself or step out anytime.

Warning SignS to Stop exerciSing and call Your doctor l Vaginal bleeding l Difficult or laboured breathing prior to exertion l Dizziness l Headache l Chest pain l Muscle weakness l Calf pain or swelling l Preterm labor l Decreased fetal movement l Amniotic fluid leakage
If you’re getting nightmares about the labour pains you’ll have to undergo at the time of delivery or about losing all that baby fat after, start working out now. Tejasvi Desai tells you the things you should keep in mind
P
regnancy gives you the go-ahead to eat whatever you want because you're eating for two, right? Wrong! Excessive weight gain can cause gestational diabetes and you’ll have a harder time getting the weight off once the baby arrives. Also, exercising during your pregnancy has great benefits — it can help prepare you for labour and also lift your spirits. But, you need to approach working out with extra caution.
doS approval from physician: Even though it is healthy to exercise during pregnancy, let the physician decide. You might need to take extra precautions if you have complications in your pregnancy or health issues, such as high blood pressure. listen to your body: Exercise depending on how you feel, not on what you have scheduled. Today you may not feel like going for a swim, but tomorrow you may have the energy to walk for an hour. Stretch away: Stretch before and after exercising. Prenatal yoga is a great way to stay flexible and strong. Stretching also reduces the risk of muscle injuries during a workout and
keeps post-workout body aches at bay. Stable core temperature: In warmer climates and seasons, you should seek indoor or aquatic exercise options to help you stay cool. Appropriate clothing, environmental considerations and adequate hydration should be priorities during your exercise program to prevent hyperthermia. Stay in the aerobic zone: Using the walk-talk test is a simple way to ensure you stay in the aerobic zone. You should be able to say a short sentence or about half of a long sentence before taking a breath. If you can talk longer than this, it is time to pick up the pace; if less than this, you need to slow down. expert advice: “Healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies do not need to limit their exercise out of fear of adverse effects. But they, along with women who were less active or sedentary prior to pregnancy, should definitely seek the approval of a physician before engaging in any form of exercise.” — Dr. A. Arun Kumar, fitness head, Snap Fitness

don’tS restricting calorie intake: Don’t restrict your calorie intake. It is recommended that you consume an extra 300 to 500 calories a day, especially if you’re exercising. push yourself: Don’t push yourself too much while working out. Pregnancy is not the time to break personal fitness records, and it may not even be possible to maintain your pre-pregnancy standards. Work out your abs: Avoid exercise that involves the risk of abdominal trauma. It’s safe to work your abs during pregnancy, but once you reach 20 weeks of pregnancy, avoid lying on your back for extended periods of time. It can reduce blood flow to your brain and uterus. experimenting: Pregnancy is not the time to take up a new sport. The recommendations regarding cycling, downhill skiing and long distance running are that while you can exercise, you do so in a manner that your body is already accustomed to. changing positions rapidly: Your blood pressure drops in the second trimester, so it is important to avoid rapid changes of position — from lying down to standing and vice versa so as not to experience dizzy spells.
Eat and lose weight. This is exactly what health and fitness chain Talwalkars promises by launching a fitness program called Reduce, which is tailormade for people who have a busy lifestyle and unhealthy diet. Dealing with dystonia

HEALTH ACCESSORIES Two new products meant to keep you healthy and help you with physical problems have been launched. Dev Goswami finds out more Digital BlooD preSSure Monitor
>> Our expert tells us that lack of awareness regarding Dystonia leads to incorrect diagnosis
Dystonia is a disorder wherein you find it hard to control your body movements and it affects one in every lakh people in the country. Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you stay aware by telling you more about it
W
e don’t realise how important something is until it’s gone and most of the time, things such as how you lift your hand or the way you walk aren’t skills that we think are going to disappear one day. So, when patients suffering from dystonia lose control of their body movements, it can be very hard to deal with. The neurological disorder affects your daily life, activities and mobility. Dr. Anandh Balasubramaniam, a consultant neurosurgeon at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, says, “The condition is known to be genetic or it may be a symptom linked to another disorder such as Parkinson’s disease, brain injury, birth injury, stroke, brain tumour and infections such as tuberculosis or reactions to certain medications. A lack of awareness leads to cases of misdiagnosis of this disorder. Understanding the condition and the latest available treatment is the key to dealing with this disorder.” Take a look at what Dr. Anandh told us about what it affects and what ways exist to deal with it:
What it can affect Dr. Anandh tells us that patients suffering from dystonia find daily activities, such as dressing up and brushing their teeth, challenging. Take a look at which body parts the disorder can affect: eyes: You begin to blink excessively and your eyes close involuntarily due to muscle contractions. This can even lead to functional blindness. neck: You could experience something known as cervical dystonia orspasmodic torticollis. Sounds like a mouthful, doesn’t it? Simply put, they are involuntary, painful muscle contractions that cause your head to pull backwards, forwards or even to one side. face: You could have difficulty closing or opening your mouth, tongue and jaw. This could lead to slurring and difficulty in swallowing, which is called oromandibular dystonia.
Vocal chords: If your voice can barely lift above a whisper, you’ll be suffering from laryngeal dystonia, where the muscles controlling your vocal cords get affected. hands: Often called writer’s or musician’s cramp, this usually occurs when a repetitive activity is performed too much (like writing, playing a musical instrument or typing). Called focal dystonia, it affects your hands and forearms.
Dealing With it If you’re looking for a cure, unfortunately, there isn’t one. But, although there is presently no cure for the disorder, there are several treatments that can help to control it to a large extent. Dystonia is not a life-threatening condition, but it can affect the quality of your life, so proper treatment, planning as well as family support is essential. Where treatment is concerned, Dr. Anandh tells us about a few: Medicated injections: A biological product (botulinum neurotoxin) is directly injected into the affected muscle. It helps reduce the contractions by making your muscles relax. Drug therapies: There are a number of medications that can be used to treat the disorder, but they’re all prescribed by doctors and different ones work for different patients. Surgery: In some cases, surgery is only an option if you don’t respond to other treatments. As part of the surgery, nerves in the spinal cord are cut or destructive parts of the brain are removed or destructed. DBS: Known as Deep Brain Stimulation, this is also a surgical treatment. It involves implanting two electrodes into your brain to target electrical pulses, block signals and help you achieve control over your body movements. It can also put a brain pacemaker to deliver stimulation at a constant level. There are several types of this therapy that a doctor will be able to explain to you better.
Paramount Surgimed has come out with a new digital blood pressure monitor, the USP of which is the fact that it comes equipped with a World Health Organisation (WHO) indicator. This indicator provides an instant comparison of your blood pressure with the levels that have been set by the WHO. The monitor detects your systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as your pulse rate. Along with displaying your blood pressure readings, the device will also alert you when your results are not normal. The blood pressure monitor comes in three varieties — talking blood pressure monitor, where the device ‘speaks’ out the result; the second model is a normal arm blood pressure monitor, while the last variety is a wrist monitor where you wrap the cuff around your wrist to measure your blood pressure levels. Can you suggest some home remedies to deal with the toenail and also how to prevent it from happening again? — Shruti agarwal, Dadar Dear Shruti, When your toenails grow and cut into your skin, the fold can get infected. It may even begin to grow over the nail, at which point you’ll have to go to the doctor. But, if the swelling has just begun, use dental floss to prevent infection. To prevent an ingrown toenail from occurring in the first place, always cut your nails straight across and avoid wearing pointy-toed shoes in the future. Dear barbara, My lips have started peeling and by the end of the day they get severly chapped. This has never happened to me before and I want to know if it is common to have dry lips during this season. — krishna Shah, vile parle Dear krishna, Dry lips are usually associated with a cooler climate. However, it is not uncommon to have chapped lips at other times as well. First of all, it is a sign of dehydration. Secondly, we are less likely to use petroleum jelly and creams in humid weather because we sweat a lot. Hot and arid weather can dry your lips out too. However, the remedies for chapped lips in this case are very different from those that you can try in winter. Keeping yourself hydrated is one of the best remedies. You cannot patch up your lips with excess of oils or creams but some coolants such as watermelon can help. Foods that cause dehydration should be avoided and foods with high water content must be included in your diet.

oes the pretty pink lipstick turn purple on your lips? Many women with darker lips face this predicament and often don’t know what to do about it. Even men suffer from dark lips which can make you look tired. The colour of your lips generally depends on your skin’s complexion and melanin levels and while you can’t drastically change the colour of your lips, you can definitely lighten them by a few shades by following some natural methods. We tell you about a few of them.
minutes every night with this mixture before going to bed.
Drink water Staying hydrated does not just do good for your skin but also your lips. Increase your water intake and make sure that you don’t stay without consuming water for long periods of time
Stop licking
Not with something as harsh as the pumice stone though! Every night before going to bed, use a soft, wet toothbrush to scrub your lips. This gentle exfoliation will not only remove dry and chapped skin, it will also make your lips softer.
A frequent mistake that most people make when they feel that their lips are dry and chapped is to lick them. You may think that licking will make them feel better, but the action actually does the opposite. Licking your lips often makes them even more dry and dull. So put a stop to this habit immediately and whenever your lips feel dry, don’t hesitate before dabbing some lip balm across them.

Massaging your lips every day also helps lighten them in a relatively shorter period of time. For this, you can make a lip balm at home combining almond oil and lemon juice. Adjust the quantity according to your liking and make sure that the mixture is not too runny. You should massage your lips for two
Here’s an old wives’ tale which proves useful. Mix a few drops of desi ghee and mustard oil and apply it on your belly button before going to sleep. Users believe that if you follow this routine on a regular basis, you will see visible results after a few weeks on your dry, chapped and dark lips. What’s the logic behind

MoiSturiSe it Keeping your lips moisturised all the time also helps improve the colour of your lips. When you’re out in the sun, you must apply petroleum jelly on your lips for protection. When you’re indoors, applying cocoa butter will also work wonders as it is believed to be a natural method of getting pink lips.
poMegranate SeeDS These seeds are not just healthy for your body but also your skin and lips. Grind the pomegranate seeds in a mixer with some milk cream. Apply it whenever you are home. It acts as an exfolialater as well as a moisturiser for your lips. But, it is a slow process, so don’t expect overnight results.
kick the butt Smoking is one of the primary reasons for people having dark and dull lips. Smoking makes your lips dark at a very fast pace. Quitting smoking is not only best for your health but also for the colour of your lips. You’ll see drastic changes in the colour and quality of your lips once you’ve kicked the butt for good.

FAKE CASE… Gujarat police officer P.P. Pandey, an accused in Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, leaves for court appearance on a stretcher in Ahmedabad on Monday. Pandey was admitted to a hospital on Sunday after complaining of chest pains.
EW DELHI/HYDERABAD: Taking a step forward, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) may give a go-ahead to the creation of Telangana state on Tuesday, a decision that could trigger protests from within the party amidst reported threat of resignation by Chief Minister Kirankumar Reddy. The CWC, the highest policymaking body of the Congress, was scheduled to meet on Monday evening. Just before that the party, which is said to have made up its mind on the division of Andhra Pradesh, will consult UPA allies on the ticklish issue. The high-level meetings are being called ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament beginning August 5, when a bill relating to formation of Telangana is required to be passed if a decision is taken, reports PTI. AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh, who has been holding discussions with the state leaders, said a decision has to be taken in "national interest". He did not elaborate. The Congress leadership has been having discussions on the issue with the state leaders and at
Andhra Pradesh CM Kirankumar Reddy the central level and has given enough indications of going in favour of Telangana. The issues that appear to be dogging them are whether Telangana should consist of just 10 districts of the region or should include a couple of districts from Rayalaseema. Also, the issue of Hyderabad -- to be capital of Telangana or to be a joint capital -- has to be resolved. One more issue could be whether to make Hyderabad a Union Territory for some years to prevent immediate problems. Amidst these moves, Andhra Chief Minister, who hails from Rayalaseema region, is said to be strongly opposed to the division of the state and has made it clear to

the leadership that he would not be a party to such a move. Congress leaders from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions on Monday held closed-door meetings with Kirankumar Reddy who is said to be toying with the idea of quitting the post if a decision is taken to split the state. Just before the CWC meeting, Congress has called UPA meeting in an attempt to secure a stamp of approval of the constituents of the ruling alliance. While NCP chief and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has already made a strong pitch for the formation of separate Telangana, another ally RLD leader and Civil Aviation Minister is a votary of smaller states and has been advocating for long the creation of Harit Pradesh out of districts of Western Uttar Pradesh, his home turf. In Hyderabad, sources close to the Chief Minister said that he may considering resigning if the proposal goes through. "That's a certainty," a minister said after the Chief Minister's meeting with Ministers T G Venkatesh, Erasu Pratap Reddy, Dokka Manikya Varaprasad, Ganta Srinivasa Rao, MP Ananta Venkatarami Reddy and a few MLAs and MLCs.

I do not expect these (RBI) liquidity measures to result in an increase in the bank lending rates. In fact bank rates have been stable and all chairpersons of banks have told me that they have no plans to increase lending rates… So the current interest rates will remain. I can't say whether they will come down. But I am almost certain they will not go up.”

Net sales, margins in-line: Net sales for FY13 grew 38.4% to INR3.62b (v/s our estimate of INR3.65b), largely driven by 20.8% increase in paid subscriber base to 206,500. EBITDA margin expanded 200bp to 27.8%, primarily led by 90bp reduction in employee cost and 120bp reduction in other expenses due to higher operating leverage. Adjusted PAT (adjusted for INR15m share issue expenses) grew 39% to INR700m, lower than our estimate of INR735m. PAT was impacted by lower other income and higher tax rate. To focus on increasing paid subscriber base: Total listings on Just Dial stood at 9.1m as at the end of FY13, 26.4% higher than the 7.2m as at the end of FY12. However, paid subscribers as a percentage of total listings stood at 2.3% as at the end of FY13 against 2.4% as at the end of FY12. In FY13, the management focused on increasing revenues from existing subscribers and on utilizing existing employees more effectively. In FY14, the management is focusing on increasing its paid subscriber base, driven by higher traction in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Valuation and view: The stock trades at 43.3x FY14E and 31.7x FY15E earnings. Given Just Dial’s strong growth visibility, competitive positioning, negative working capital cycle, and improving operating metrics, we believe that the premium valuations are justified. We value the stock at 36x FY15E EPS of INR21.7. Maintain Buy with a target price of INR 782.
Karvy Stock Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on Torrent Pharma CMP: Rs. 424 Target Rs. 473
Torrent’s revenues rose by 23.7% YoY at Rs9300mn as against our estimates of Rs9130 mn. EBITDA margins were down by 90 bps to 17.9% (inventory write off) in Q1FY14 compared to 18.8% in Q1FY13. Net profit has improved by 27%YoY to Rs1158 mn as against our estimates of Rs1125mn Reported profit includes milestone payment of Rs420mn. Margins improved EBITDA margins have fallen by 90 bps to 17.9% compared to 18.8% in Q1FY13 as against our estimate of 18.7% mainly due to impairment of inventories in international (Brazil) and domestic to the tune of Rs 230 mn. Excluding Inventory write off of Rs230 mn EBITDA margins would have been 20.2%. Outlook and Valuation: We broadly maintain our revenues for FY 14E and FY 15E despite marginal downgrades in domestic and Brazil. We downgrade our EBDITA margins from 19.2 % to 18.6 % in FY14E and from 19.2 % to 18.8 % in FY15E on account of increase in expenses. We downgrade our EPS estimates by 2.3 % to Rs 26.2 and by 1.3 % to Rs 31.4. We downgrade our price target by 1.6 % to Rs 473 which includes Rs 2 on account of milestone payment. Due to upside in excess of 15 % we upgrade the stock to BUY.
Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on JSW Energy CMP: Rs. 45 Target Rs. 50
JSW’s Q1FY14 adj. PAT at Rs 3.4bn came in ahead of expectations on soft international coal prices. Net generation for the quarter was up 9% QoQ on enhanced capacity (to 3,140MW) as sales increased 13% YoY to Rs 24.7bn. While PLF for the Vijaynagar plant remained strong, it declined for Ratnagiri/Barmer plants on planned maintenance and back-downs (on lower demand due to early monsoons). Maintain BUY on benign fuel pricing and favorable merchant rates. Increased capacity, improved realisations aid revenue growth: JSW’s sales grew 13% YoY as installed capacity went up from 2,600MW to 3,140MW, and units generated increased to 5,097bn (up 8% YoY). Average realisations for the quarter further improved 5% YoY to Rs 4.27/unit. Contribution of sales through short-term declined to 46% in the quarter (vs. 53% in Q1FY13). Lower PLFs at Barmer/Ratnagiri on planned maintenance and backdowns: PLFs for the Barmer/Ratnagiri plants declined ~1000bps/~900bps YoY to 65%/83% on planned maintenance and back-downs (on lower demand because of early monsoons). Draughts in Maharashtra during the month of May also led to weakness in demand and hence back-downs. Weakness in international coal prices aid profitability: The average coal price index for Indonesia/South Africa was down 15%/14% YoY in Q1FY14. Moreover, INR depreciation (impact seen only in June’13) led to lower fuel prices for the company. Indonesia/South Africa accounted for 76%/24% of JSW’s coal imports. Wind Sector VC Funding Touches USD 210 mn
Venture capital funding in the wind sector saw a whopping 12-fold jump to USD 210 million in the June quarter on the back of some large deals going to project developers in India, says a report. Wind venture capital (VC) funding in the second quarter of 2012 (April-June) stood at USD 17 million while the figure for January-March 2013 quarter was at USD 16 million. Wind sector VC funding in the second quarter of this year (AprilJune) saw high levels amid strong project acquisition activity.
icy stance”, it forecast that “Growth is expected to improve slowly as the year progresses, but recovery is likely to be slow.” According to the RBI various surveys indicate further drop in business confidence. The Reserve Bank’s Industrial Outlook Survey shows weakening of business sentiments in Q1 of 2013-14 to a three year low, though expectations showed improvement for Q2. As regards Headline inflation based on wholesale price index (WPI), RBI says it has moderated to below 5 per cent, while consumer price inflation has remained at an elevated level of near double digits. Upside risks persist with recent rupee depreciation and rise in crude prices amidst political uncertainties in the Middle East. Professional forecasters outside the Reserve Bank project modest recovery in 2013-14 at 5.7 per cent. The latest forecast is a downward revision from 6.0 per cent in May 2013. Their average WPI inflation projection of 5.3 per cent for 2013-14 marks a sharp downward revision from 6.5 per cent in May 2013. On the currency front it says the “recent liquidity tightening measures taken by the Reserve Bank to curb
volatility in the exchange rate provide, at best, some breathing time. This strategy will succeed if reinforced by structural reforms to reduce the current account deficit (CAD) and step up savings and investment.” Turning its attention on the global front it believes that “global growth remains subdued, with improvements in some advanced economies (AEs), especially the US and Japan, getting counterbalanced by slowing growth in key emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs).” Global commodity price inflation is expected to remain contained in the near term, in part helped by slowing growth in China. However, upside risks to global crude oil prices remain from rising geo-political uncertainties in the Middle East. As regards the Global financial markets, the report says “these have entered into a period of fresh turbulence, with re-pricing of risks from likely tapering of quantitative easing (QE). Going forward, interest rates could continue to harden and financial conditions could tighten further, keeping markets episodically under stress.”
New Investments In Manufacturing Virtually On Hold By A Business Reporter
N
ew investments in the country’s manufacturing sector are virtually on hold, with half of the companies indicating that they have no plans for major investments in the fiscal year 2013-14, says a survey jointly conducted by PwC and FICCI titled – “India Manufacturing Barometer”, sluggish economic growth and deceleration in production have made manufacturing companies tread cautiously. “In an environment of sluggish economic growth, it is not surprising that the mood exhibited by companies is cautious,” PwC India Leader Industrial Products Bimal Tanna said. The manufacturing sector, however, is using this period to realign the business models and prepare for the future, he added. The survey said that companies appear confident about their own prospects for growth and expect profit margins to improve over the next 12 months. Companies believe that the market may have bottomed out and more than 50% largely expect their own revenues to grow at higher than 10% over the next year and profit margins to inch up, reports PTI. Of the companies surveyed by the survey, 73% believe that customer requirements and expectations have changed due to the global economic environment as well as the domestic slowdown. Around 42% are planning service additions to their products in order to respond to frequently shifting and disparate customer prefer-
ences, while, 76% surveyed companies stated that they are resorting to cost efficiencies to meet customer requirements. However, the major growth barriers expected are higher interest rates, lack of domestic demand and other concerns like pressure for increased wages, legislative or regulatory pressures, decreasing profitability and increased competition from foreign markets.

ne of the leading cultural organisations of Mumbai, Sam Ved Society of Performing Arts, organised the Raindrops festival featuring varied classical styles of India, namely Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathak and Manipuri and was be held at the Mini P.L. Deshpande auditorium. It was exciting to watch different styles on the same platform and some of them performed well too. Normally the monsoon season is considered the slack season due to inevitable reasons, hence the shows are few and rare. It is really a daring initiative to organise shows regularly during the monsoons and for which the credit goes to renowned Kathak exponent Smt Uma Dogra, who heads the Sam Ved Society. The dancers who performed at the
,festival were Sakshi Kumar for Kathak, Rinku Bhattacharya for Manipuri, Ayona Bhaduri for Odissi, Sonali Surve for Bharata Natyam, Srilekha Jayanthi for Kuchipudi and Kathak duet by Nandini Mehta and Murali Mehta. The programme commenced with Kathak by Sakshi Kumar. Sakshi created a fine impression with her performance, revealing her command over footwork and expressional dancing too. "Mohe

marks on the body of Krishna. Rinki was impressive in Bajiker Khel where the dancer exhibited some acrobatic feats of moving on the knees and jumping in circular style in the tandava style. The only couple dancers of the festival Murali Mohan and Nandini Mehta created a lasting impression for the fine co-ordination and command over the technical quality of Kathak. The performance started with a number in praise of Lord Nataraj. The duo revealed their command pure dance sequences too and the expressional quality was noteworthy in the Anup Jalota Bhajan ‘Bhagwan ko bhi Bhakto Se Kaam Aajata Hain’ wherein a boatman is thrilled to see Lord Rama travelling in the boat and does not take any money in return but says he should saved from the seas when the need arises. A colourful festival indeed.
OF TREASURE MAPS AND WARRIORS!

FIRST ANIMATED MARATHI FILM
PT. KRISHNARAO PANDIT SMRITI SAMAROH
Chedo Na' portrays the pretentious anger of Radha due to the mischief played by Krishna. Rinki Bhattacharya Das performed Manipuri with elegance and expressional quality. Manine Radha described the five types of heroine including Vasakasajja, Vipralabda and Khandita. As Khandita the heroine is portrayed as Uttama Nayika with underlying pathos of jealousy and anger, as she is shocked to see the tell tale
edar Shinde is a popular dramatist who adapts his plays for celluloid wonderfully, the recent being ‘Kho Kho’ and his adaptation of his play ‘Shreemant Damodarpant’ is a good instance of that. The tale is highly improbable, but good fun. The film starts on a historical note when a Maratha warrior (Bharat Jadhav) fights his enemies along with his friend Lakhoba (Sunil Barve) in the pre-independence era, who kills one of their enemies to get a treasure map but they get the map and start fighting over it but alas the map gets torn in a fight between the two. Only if the film was as interesting and well shot by cinematographer Sanjay Memane as the prologue. Then in the present when in a ‘wada’ lives the family of Damodarpant
NEWS IN BRIEF
innocent Damu (Bharat Jadhav) turns a Maratha warrior after six o ‘clock and he gets completely immersed in the persona of Damodarpant leading to many funny situations and raising laughs among the audiences. The fight for the map is half baked and the director could have worked on that situation a little bit more. But the film belongs to Bharat Jadhav whose comic flair is known to everybody and Sunil Barve, the usual chocolate boy who is seen in a negative role for the first time and does it well. The music is okay. The performances by the supporting cast is good especially Arun Bhadsavle, Varad Chavan, Jayraj Nayar, Mrunal Dusanis, etc. Vijay Chavan raises laughter in every scene, The film is a good clean watchable comedy and perfect for a dreary rainy day.
SUDHA CHANDRAN IN MARATHI FILM
Actress and renowned danseuse Sudha Chandran was present to promote her first Marathi film in the leading role as Mahalaxmi Devi in the bi-lingual ‘Jai Mahalaxmi’(Hindi) and ‘Pathrakhin Majhi Laxmi’ (Marathi). The movie directed by P. Subhash and produced by Sureshbabu Malge of Mount Mar Productions also stars Meghna Nikade and Rajesh Pathak. Award winning film director P. Subhash has earlier directed films like ‘Bandya ani Baby’, ‘Har Har Mahadev’, ‘Kunku Lavte Mahercha’, ‘Chaukat, Adhantari’, ‘Tu Na Mee’, ‘Abhaas, Hasari’ etc.
WAMAN KENDRE IS NEW NSD DIRECTOR!
E
minent playwright and theatre veteran Waman Kendre has been recently appointed the course coordinator and director of National School of Drama (NSD). Speaking to us about his appointment, he says, “It is indeed a great honour for me to be appointed as the director of NSD amidst great opposition, which I believe is very democratic. But my stint as the director of drama at the Mumbai university must have been responsible for my appointment, I have some great plans for NSD like having a NSD centre at various parts of the country so that the young drama enthusiast can study at a centre close to him and not lose out on enrollment since there are only 20-30 seats at the NSD. I also have plans of starting a drama writing course since most of the plays staged today have their origins in foreign plays and the need for Indian plays is very much required. I will try my best to make my appointment a success and get the best talent available from throughout the country and make it as beneficial as Marathi theatre which is growing from strength to strength”. Waman Kendre is certainly the right man for a great institution like NSD!
Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan remembered teacher who taught him the music of the Khurja gharana. Alladiya Khan, the founder of the Jaipur Attrauli gharana was also Azmat Hussain's uncle and he taught many uncommon ragas to the singer. Azmat Hussain added to his repertoire by learning from Vilayat Hussain Khansaheb who showed him the intricacies of the Agra gharana 'layakari'. Azmat Hussain was a creative singer who com-
posed many bandishes in different ragas under the pen name 'Dilrang'. He also composed ghazals which are sung by singers of the present generation. Vazahat sang a few Sufi numbers at this concert which attracted real lovers of the ghazal. He sings in a broad voice and can also produce subtle harkat's which are necessary in a ghazal. An appreciative audience applauded his forays into short
sarangi to the status of a solo instrument. Later on the tradition was carried forward by a towering musician like Pandit Ramnarain. The session taans and filigree work which was conducted by Dhruba embellished the ghazals. BCCI SHOULD WAIT FOR POLICE PROBE TO END: SPORTS MINISTRY
SPORTS
Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JULY 30, 2013
N
EW DELHI: The BCCI probe panel might have given a clean chit to the co-owners of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in the IPL spot-fixing scandal, but the Sports Ministry today made it clear it does not give much importance to the verdict and would rather wait for the police probe to get over. "The BCCI might have cleared them but I think the Indian Cricket Board should wait for the police probe to get over," said Sports Secretary P K Deb here. A two-member panel, comprising former High Court Judges T Jayaram Chouta and R Balasubramanian, was mandated to enquire into the roles of Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, who was the Team Prinicipal of Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and its coowner Raj Kundra. The panel submitted its report to the BCCI Working Committee, which met in Kolkata yesterday, where it said that it has not found evidence of any wrongdoings. "There is no evidence of any wrongdoing found by the judges against Raj Kundra, India Cements and Rajasthan Royals. The report will now be forwarded to the IPL Governing Council which will take a final decision when it meets on August 2 in New Delhi," BCCI vice-President Niranjan Shah had told reporters. Since the panel's order is binding on the BCCI, it is clear that Srinivasan might return as Board chief. Srinivasan could stage a comeback as BCCI chief as early as August 2 when the Board's Working Commit-
probe before acquitting N Srinivasan of any wrongdoing. Shah reiterated that two-member probe panel comprising of Retd Justice Jayaram Chouta and Retd Justice R Balasubramanian had to continue the probe with whatever "available material". "I think BCCI can't do anything about it (on reports that Mumbai Police didn't co-operate with panel) as we have no control over it. So, we have to live with whatever material that is available to us," Shah said. However, Shah maintained that if any one of the accused is found guilty during further investigations by the police authorities, BCCI will take immediate cognizance. "If anyone is convicted, automatically the BCCI will take notice and step in to take necessary action," Shah said.
tee and the IPL Governing Council meet in New Delhi to take a final call on the issue.
WE CAN'T DEPEND ON POLICE REPORT, SAYS BCCI VP NIRANJAN SHAH The BCCI defended the report of its panel which inquired into the IPL spot-fixing scandal, saying they could not depend on the police report since the two-member commission was already on the job. "I think we can't depend on police report as we had already constituted a commission and whatever the commission said is final," BCCI Vice-President Niranjan Shah said when questioned as to why the BCCI didn't wait for Mumbai and Delhi police to complete their
Kundra’s presence in CLT20 to be decided after Aug 2: Official
NEW DELHI: A decision on whether Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra will be present at the venue during the Champions League Twenty20 will be taken after the IPL Governing Council formally clears the NRI businessman in the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal. "We are very happy to know that Mr Kundra's name has been cleared of any wrongdoing during the BCCI working committee meeting. The
franchise will come out with an official statement once the IPL governing council ratifies the decision of the working committee," a senior Royals official told PTI. Asked whether the co-owner of the Jaipur-based franchise will be there in the stands to cheer the team during the upcoming Champions League Twenty20, the official said,"A call in this regard will be taken after the IPL governing council meeting on August 2." "As of now, the BCCI hasn't made any formal contact with us or issued a notification about clearing Kundra." Kundra was questioned by the
Delhi Police's Special Cell for allegedly betting during IPL-VI matches. The BCCI, in one of its earlier working committee meetings, suspended Kundra pending inquiry. However, the franchise official said it was indeed a very challenging time during the business end of the last edition when three Rajasthan Royals players S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested by Delhi Police on charges of spot-fixing. “It was really a challenging time for all of us at the Rajasthan Royals. But we have always had full faith in judiciary.”
2014 Indian Grand Prix could be scrapped
N
EW DELHI: The Indian Grand Prix could be dropped from the next year's Formula One roster, putting a premature end to India's controversial foray into the world of high speed cars. Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said that India is likely to lose its place on the 2014 F1 calendar as he intends to limit the number of races to 20. "Is India going to happen next year? Probably not," Ecclestone was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency in Budapest where the Hungarian Grand Prix concluded on Sunday. Asked about the reason, the 82year-old Ecclestone replied: "Very political." The fate of India hosting the 2014
F1 GP will now be decided in the World Motorsport Council meeting in September where Ecclestone is expected to present the provisional 2014 calendar to the governing International Automobile Federation. India hosted its controversymarred first Grand Prix in 2011 amidst raving reviews from the F1 community about the 5.14 kilometre-long Buddh International Circuit (BIC), clean paddock and facilities. This year, the third edition of the race is scheduled for October 27 at Greater Noida as the 16th round of the 19-race championship. But with Russia, New Jersey and Austria now shortliested as additions, there are 22 venues vying for a place on the F1 calendar with teams expressing a preference for a maximum of 20 races. It is believed that tough taxation rules in India, event's financial viability and bureaucratic hurdles might have prompted Ecclestone to come up with such a statement. Only Last month, race promoters Jaypee Sports International (JPSI) had issued a statement responding to rumours that the race could be axed from 2014. "Some international news organisations are trying to spread rumours that JPSI may
not host 2014 Indian GP. This is totally baseless and malicious. Our agreement with Formula One Management is to hold F1 races at Buddh International Circuit (BIC) till 2015, and we are fully committed to do that," the JPSI statement read. However, the current development has left the Indian race organisers in a spot of bother as they look
to open a back-channel talk with the F1 supremo ahead of the World Motorsport Council meeting in September. "We are looking to hold talks with Ecclestone as to what prompted him to make such a statement. There is a possibility that some amendments could be worked out in the current contract to keep our place in the F1 calendar," a JPSI spokesperson told PTI.
Bernie Ecclestone [L has reportedly said that the Indian GP is likely to be scrapped from the F1 calendar due to political reasons. [Above] A practice session last year.

Is BCCI above the law, asks Kirti Azad
NEW DELHI: Training his guns at the BCCI for handing out clean chits in the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal, cricketer-turnedpolitician Kirti Azad asked if the Indian Cricket Board considers itself above the law. Azad's comments came after the BCCI's two-member probe panel cleared Chennai Super Kings Team Principle Gurunath Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of Board President N Srinivasan, Rajasthan Royals franchise and its co-owner Raj Kundra in the scam that rocked the IPL this year. "I don't blame (BCCI acting chief) Jagmohan Dalmiya or Srinivasan for this. The politicians are hell bent on making BCCI the next Indian Olympic Association. We have seen what happened to IOA due to political interference and now the same is happening with BCCI," Azad told 'PTI-Bhasha'. "Mumbai police has said that the investigation is still on. Delhi police is still investigating and the BCCI panel has given them a clean chit. Is BCCI above the law and constitution of the country?" he asked. Azad felt the BCCI should be immediately brought under the ambit of the Right To Information act. "There is no other alternative. The government has to intervene and bring BCCI under the RTI. When former sports minister Ajay Maken brought the sports bill, the cabinet ministers, involved with BCCI, opposed that. If BCCI claims that they do auditing of their account, then why do they hesitate to come under RTI?" Azad queried. "It is time to make BCCI functioning more transparent and it can be done through RTI," he said. He also said that it is wrong to penalise players and give clean chits to officials. "Whenever something happens, players get penalised and officials walk free. It's a pity because despite all the controversies cricket is still the most popular game in the country due to the hard work and excellent performance of players," he said.

RTI will apply to BCCI: Justice Mudgal
NEW DELHI: The BCCI will have to come under the ambit of Right to Information Act if it wants to use ‘India’ as its national team’s name, Justice Mukul Mudgal, who headed the committee constituted to draft the Sports Development Bill 2013, said today. Justice Mudgal said that all the sports bodies, including the BCCI, will have to come under the RTI once the Bill is passed by the Parliament. “RTI will apply to all sports bodies and even cricket will come under it. Apart from a few exemptions like one cannot raise questions regarding why a particular player/coach is selected over another, or the contents of a player’s contract, medical health and fitness etc, the public is authorised to raise questions,” said Justice Mudgal at a media interaction to discuss the contents of the draft Bill. The working group also includes eminent sportspersons like Olympic gold medal-winning shooter Abhinav Bindra and former India hockey skipper Viren Rasquinha, sports administrators and legal experts.
India colts in command vs SL after spinner Yadav grabs six
KURUNEGALA (Sri Lanka): Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav grabbed six for 38 as India colts dismissed hosts Sri Lanka for a modest 212 in the first innings of the second and final ‘Youth Test’ match being played here today. At stumps, India were 70 for two having lost their opener Shubham Khajuria (36) and Akhil Herwadkar (8) in the 19 overs that they faced during the final session.
N
EW DELHI: Former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin considers Virat Kohli as the future captain of India but said the young cricketer needs to tone down his aggression and behave like a leader. “He has to tone down. You cannot be like that always. I know he is very good player. He has a big reputation. He is considered as the future captain and he has to behave like a captain,” Azharuddin told reporters here. Kohli, who successfully captained India to a 3-0 unassailable lead against Zimbabwe in the ongoing ODI series, has been in news on and off for his dose of aggression and on-field spats. Recently, Kohli, miffed at being given out to a controversial catch during the second ODI against Zimbabwe, ended up arguing aggressively with on-field officials even after the third umpire ruled against him. “Kohli’s nature is different, I understand that but then everybody looks upto him. Being aggressive is good but he has to be aggressive from inside, showing it on the outside won’t help. If he tones down a little bit it will be good for him,” said Azharuddin, under whose captaincy India have won 103 ODIs and 14 Tests.

OLKATA: India regained the team title in World Youth (Under-16) Chess Olympiad after a gap of five years with a resounding victory over Iran in the final round in Chongqing, China today. The Indian quartet of S A Gagare, Murali Karthikeyan, Diptayan Ghosh and Sayantan Das beat Iran 3.5-0.5 in the 10th round to top the team standings with 30.5 points ahead of heavyweight Russia, who took second spot with 30 points, and Turkey (third with 26 points). The Indian team won eight ties while drawing twice. This is India’s third title in this prestigious team event having won it previously in Singapore 2007 and Turkey 2008. International Master Gagare gave India a bright start by defeating Ahmad Asgari Zadeh before Karthikeyan drew his game against woman international master Sarasadat Khademalsharieh. Fourth consecutive win and 2 double podium for Mahindra Racing I MOLA, ITALY: Imola’s Autodromo ‘Enzo e Dino Ferrari’ gave Mahindra Racing the perfect platform to showcase yet another spectacular performance in Rounds 7 and 8 of the CIV Moto3 championship here. Riders Andrea Locatelli and Michael Ruben Rinaldi performed exceedingly well in both races yesterday, ensuring that the pair is in the top three as far as standings are concerned. In the first race, Locatelli, who started at pole, finished second, while teammate Rinaldi started second and won a race marked with high temperatures. Locatelli won the second encounter while Rinaldi finished third. In the first race - Round 7 of the Championship - following a great performance in qualifying, Locatelli scored the pole po-
front after a few laps. As Rinaldi kept the lead thanks to an outstanding pace, Locatelli lost a position while trying to avoid some riders who crashed in front of him. With a few laps to go, Locatelli managed to overtake both Marini and Migno, to cross the line in second place. Rinaldi was crowned race winner and set the fastest lap of the race (2’01.255). The Mahindra garage celebrated both the riders’ results and the competitiveness of the overall package that proved to be successful. After dominating both qualisition courtesy a 2’01.211 seconds lap-time, just 0.070 faster fying and the race in Round 7, than teammate Rinaldi in 2nd the Mahindra riders were ready to challenge again for podium place, who clocked in 2’01.291. Both on the first row of the positions in Round 8. Ray Price retires from international cricket H
ARARE: Zimbabwean leftarm spinner Ray Price, part of the team for the ongoing ODIs against India, has decided to call it quits from international cricket in the middle of the fivematch series after failing to get a single game so far. The 37-year-old will not travel with the team for the remaining two ODIs of the series, which Zimbabwe has already conceded 0-3 to India. “I was going to wait until my contract expired to call it a day but, yes, I’ve decided to retire from international cricket,” Price told ESPNcricinfo. “I won’t be going with the guys to Bulawayo. I’m retired.” Price
was not originally included in the side for the series but coach Andy Waller said he remained an integral part of the side. He was expected to be given at least one game before calling time. Price finishes his ODI career with 100 wickets in 102 matches along with the 80 scalps in 22 Tests. His Twenty20 wicket-count stood at 13 in 16 matches. “Pricey’s called it a day,” Zimbabwe captain Brendan Taylor said. “If he was going to play it was going to be here in Harare. We’re going to miss his experience, but in saying that it does give our young spinners who are coming through a great opportunity,” he added.
Problem is mental toughness: Taylor Livid after conceding a seriesdeciding lead to India, Zimbabwe cricket captain Brendan Taylor said his team has exhibited a distinct lack of mental toughness in the ongoing ODIs. Zimbabwe are winless in the five-match series so far, losing the first three ODIs without giving much of a headache to the visitors. “I think (the problem is) mental toughness. I don’t think we’re mentally sharp enough. We’re just not making the precise decisions at the right time and not putting a real price on our wickets. Too many soft dismissals,” Taylor said.

EW DELHI: London Games silver medallist and IBL Icon player Saina Nehwal is delighted to be part of the same team as former Olympic champion and her childhood hero Taufiq Hidayat. The 23-year-old Nehwal, who is preparing for the upcoming World Championship in China next month, said, "He (Taufiq) is a role model and a driving force in the game. I'm really happy to be part of Hyderabad Hotshots team and I was thrilled once he was also included." Saina, who bagged a price of USD 120,000 in the IBL auction, said she was looking forward to train with the legendary Indonesian. "Getting to train and play along with him is going to be brilliant. It will be the best part about playing the league," the world No.3 women's player said. The Indian shuttle star further added, "Fans would love to watch him on courts. I know Taufik Sir since I joined the game. He is known for his wrist play, his back strokes are matchless and so nicely and accurately hit, and his net play and court coverage is unparalleled. "I remember playing with him as a mixed double partner for an exhibition match in Syed Modi Memorial tournament in Lucknow in 2009. I have great memories of that match. I also have a smashing photograph with him, Prakash (Padukone) sir and Gopi (Pullela Gopichand) sir from an event held in Mumbai the same year. "Now, our association for Hyderabad Hotshots will be for
more than a fortnight." Commenting on the Indonesian's famed charm and handsome looks, Saina, who has a hat-trick of Indonesia Open titles under her belt, said, "Taufiq sir is the king of badminton, handsome, talented and very humble. He is extremely energetic on the court and so charming that he makes badminton look easy and simple, though it's not. It is the fastest game in the world and requires loads of energy to play. Taufiq sir is very simple and yet moody, if he is not interested in a game he will not play. I'm sure his presence will be a great morale booster to Hyderabad Hotshots."
