AS THECP plays YEAR ENDS... spoilsport
Security tight, but... By Zuber Ansari
T
he Mumbai Police is all set with its security arrangements for the New Year celebrations and has asked citizens to take precautionary steps and co-operate with the police. Police will keep a close eye on the city beaches considering beaches are the preferred destinations for many revelers. The Juhu Beach, Girgaum Chowpatty, Aksa Beach, Gorai Beach and Manori Beach are some of them. The city police have asked Mumbaikars to avoid isolated places and people can ring up the Mumbai Police control room number in case of emergencies. Mumbai Police spokesoperson Bhagwant Chaate said, “Couples should try and avoid isolated places late in the night”. Sources from Juhu Police station revealed that the cops will not allow anyone to enter inside the Juhu beach with liquor. Last year, a constable was beaten up by a drunken man over a minor issue. Bandra Police station sources said, “Couples should avoid visiting Bandra Reclamation, Bandra Band Stand and Carter Road late in the night because these are spots where thousands of people gather and keeping a watch on everyone is not feasible”. Every police station has made its eve-teasing squad which will work to control eve-teasing incidents during the celebrations. DCP Zone-VIII Namdev Chavan told ADC, “I have ordered all Senior Police Inspectors of my jurisdiction to keep a check on bars and lodges during the New Year eve and if any bar owner is found providing liquor to persons without a license will be dealt with strictly”.

M
umbai Police Chief, Dr. Satyapal Singh seems to be very supportive only to the city’s creamy layer of society with regards to New Year revelry. This becomes apparent as Singh has specifically allowed the city’s five-star hotels and pubs to remain open till 3 am, while he issued a blanket order to eateries, hotels and restaurants to close their establishments at 1.30 am. When asked for the reasons behind such steps, Singh said, “Considering women’s safety as well as drunk driving, such steps are being implemented. My views are very clear and firm and there will be no change in the deadlines.” Singh is being criticized by The Indian Hotels and Restaurant Association (AHAR) for implementing such steps under the garb of moral policing. The people who control the Indian education system need to do a lot of learning themselves to get above the inefficiency, the bungling and the corruption that are highlights of their working style. The problem gets worse when these deficiencies are compounded by a continuing indifference. Yatin Ingle takes a look at the gaps between promise and performance, and finds very few things to be glad about. Is there any glimmer of hope?

2013 REVISITED
The ‘art’ of looting in schools
After the forms for the Elementary/Intermediate drawing examinations were dispatched, city schools set some compulsions on students who wanted to appear for the drawing exams. Schools asked these students to enroll in the school’s drawing classes which cost almost Rs.2,000 and those that didn’t would not be allowed to appear for the examinations. Thus although the fee for the elementary examination is Rs.50 and that of the intermediate exam is Rs.100, schools began looting their students in this way.
100% FAIL!
Where to Play?
The varsity ignored the maintenance of the sports complex, leaving students with no place to play. Even as it prepared for its annual sports meet, Mumbai University seemed to have conveniently forgotten or ignored the maintenance of its sports facilities set up for students. The water in the swimming pool turned stagnant and was infested with larvae, while the shrubbery surrounding the pool was overgrown. The tennis court turned into a muddy lawn while the table tennis area was used for storage.
Admission headaches coming on!
A limited choice of junior colleges attached to schools in the Arts stream posed a headache for students trying to fulfill absurd board norms for the online admission process, like students compulsorily having to pick no less than 35 preferred colleges for admission, 15 colleges from wards in one’s own zone, another 15 from anywhere in the city and suburbs, and five junior colleges attached to schools in one’s own ward and the adjacent one, the area of which is itself would be decided by the Board. If a student did not fill in the required number, his application was automatically rejected.
IDOL garners Rs.36cr revenue
MU’s distance education institute made a record turnover since its establishment. With admissions of 76,000 students, it also reached the maximum turnover since its existence with its revenue of Rs.36 crore for 2013-2014.
OKAY WITH 69 + 1 = 70
Not one good word was said here
MU’s counseling cell has never counseled any student ever, but year after year funds are added to its coffers. After setting up a counseling cell for students in its Kalina Campus, MU has not spent a single penny on students or on the recruitment of staffers. Expenditure records show that only Rs.1, 781 has been spent on telephone bills, though budgetary funds have increased from Rs.6,93,000 to Rs.13,57,600.
he accepting of a combined average of 70 for passing in Maths and Science, saw the absurdity where a student could get 69 in Maths and 1 in Scence and still be declared passed in both the subjects. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) did away with its 150 marks pattern for the subjects of Mathematics and Science in the State School Certificate (SSC) board exams, and got set to introduce the 100 marks pattern for both the subjects. The average passing marks was brought down to 70!
SCALING DOWN OF MARKS FOR MU STUDENTS T he university has passed an ordinance where here on, students scoring 20% higher marks in internal assessments than in external exams will have the ‘excess’ marks cut off from their semester results. A circular to this effect was sent to
all colleges. The regulation came into force in the current academic year itself, and is to cover all under-graduate and post-graduate courses in the Science, Arts and Commerce streams.
ONLINE PAYMENT OF FEES BY DEBIT/CREDIT CARD O
nline payments, extension of dates, finally served to boost admissions to the varsity’s distance learning institute. The Mumbai University (MU) achieved real success after it stepped up technological innovations for admission processes. Taking a count of enrollments and admissions, the MU registered a record 76,941 admissions for the academic year 2013-2014. This was largely due to the introduction of online payment of fees by debit/credit cards.
IMPRACTICAL!
The state government permitted an increase in the number of classrooms to handle the excess intake of students in colleges, but computers labs, Chemistry and Biology labs, presentation rooms and seminar halls were unable to accommodate the large numbers for practicals.
n an initiative unheard of before, the state board decided to shut down junior colleges that had lower passing percentages. After noting that there were 75 junior colleges with zero pass percentage in the HSC Board examinations, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) brought out a new recommendation that such colleges be shut down, and strict inspections be conducted carried out by the State Board and Education officers to verify the reasons for the low percentages at other institutions.
T
From TYBAF to SYJC
Students of Saket College were considered only 10+2 passed, as their college had no permission to conduct BAF courses. 31 students of were not allowed by the MU to appear for their fifth semester exams, as their course was not recognised by the varsity. After two years of undergraduate studies, these students were considered as only HSC qualified and were required to take admission for the first year of graduation in June.

HSC EXAM FORMS GO ONLINE
he Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education began accepting online applications for Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC, class XII) examinations. Schools with more than 500 students appearing for the exam can apply.
PRE-PRIMARY ADMISSIONS BECAME ILLEGAL
MUMBAI | TUEDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2013
EDUCATION M
ost schools have already completed their pre-primary admission process for the year 2014-2015. However, a new directive issued by the State Pre-Primary Education Directorate has caught these schools and parents off-guard. As per the directives, admissions carried out in the months of November and December will be considered illegal and schools can start the admission process only in April and May for the academic session beginning in June 2014.
SCHOOLS GET GANPATI VACATION F
or the first time ever, the Education Department of Maharashtra declared a four-day vacation for students from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) run
schools as well as private schools. However, the education department asked schools to adjust these holidays from the holidays given to the students for Diwali vacations.
The demand for Ganesh Chaturthi vacations was made by the Maharastra Navnirman Vidhyarthi Sena (MNVS) to the education department.

REVISED SCHOOL BUS POLICY
T
he Maharashtra government was forced to stay the implementation of a recent controversial Government Resolution (GR) on school bus policy that had come into effect on November
18. The GR had raised hackles among principals since it held them responsible for anything that happened to a child, even outside the school premises while traveling in a school bus. The GR also stated that no pri-
03
vate vehicles would be allowed to ferry children to and from school. It also made the school responsible for making an agreement with the bus operators and also for keeping a check on each school bus.
VC in the dock
To add to the goof-ups in exams, infrastructure issues and administrative problems in the Mumbai University (MU) came a report that the Vice- Chancellor of the varsity could have faked his way to the post. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) for improvement of Higher Education in Maharashtra stated that the Vice-Chancellor of MU, Dr. Rajan Welukar faked documents in his application letter for the post of VC. The committee released an affidavit statement of Welukar, in which he agreed that he has only five research papers, whereas in his application for the post of VC, he mentioned that he held 12 research papers.
Not deemed, doomed!
MU cancelled the degrees of all students who completed their post-graduation from deemed universities thus preventing them from pursuing their post graduation from Mumbai University.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor went on a hunger strike in Borivali on Monday to protest against a Sena legislator’s alleged protection of an ‘illegal’ Aarey milk stall which she claims is obstructing people from occupying a newly constructed housing society. Manisha Chaudhari, a BJP councillor from Govind Nagar in Borivali went on a hunger strike to lend her support to 75 families who have been prevented from occupying their homes in the newly redeveloped Motinagar Co-operative Housing society due fire brigade’s refusal to grant the building an NOC. Two years ago, the Motinagar Housing Society went in for redevelopment. As part of the new plan, the builder has created a line of shops on the ground floor and made new exit gate. However, this gate is blocked by the Aarey milk stall. Officials from the fire brigade have suggested that the gate be cleared so that fire tenders can enter the building in case of an accident. Till this is not done, the society will not receive an NOC and an OC. Chaudhari said, “Due to the existence of the Aarey milk stall, civic officials state that the building cannot be occupied. We have requested the owner to move his stall

Councillor Abhishek Ghosalkar, son of Legislator Vinod Ghosalkar said, “The Aarey milk stall has been there for the last 30 years and is the only means of livelihood for its owner. He is being harassed by civic officials.” He added, “The civic employees tried to remove the stall without following due process of the law thus damaging it. The stall owner has filed a complained against civic officials and his demand is that he should get an alternate space for his stall.”

Girl students get threats from political parties
Political parties and students’ wings threaten and bribe shortlisted female students of University Representatives (URs) for students’ council seats By Yatin Ingle
W
hile the state government has given a green signal to the students’ council elections, the bloodshed and dangerous environment still grips the election phase. After the Mumbai University (MU) finalised its 15 University Representatives (UR) who will contest for the prestige and pride of the Students’ Council secretary and chairman, political parties have stepped ahead to overpower these candidates. Yesterday, three female URs complained to the ViceChancellor that they have been harassed and threatened. These students have claimed that their life is at risk due to these elections and they will be boycotting the elections. The general secretaries (GS) of the Students’ Council in colleges have already been elected and the top 15 for the post of the UR have also been declared. As the declaration was announced, the URs started getting calls and references from political parties and students’ wings to contest elections representing their parties. Bhagyashree Sawant, GS, M.D. College said, “As soon as the UR list was declared, I started getting calls from political parties to represent them for the elections. These parties and students’ wings have been offering us Rs.4 to 5 lakh to contest the elections from their sides. We cannot
get out of our house nor can we attend college lectures as these political parties have been keeping an eye on us. We are scared and are unsafe. We have already boycotted the elections”. A candidate who did not wish to be named said, “I and my family have been threatened for contesting the elections from their political party. I am here in Mumbai to meet the VC and tell him that I will be boycotting the elections. It’s nothing but just a risk to our life”. During the monsoon session of the assembly, a proposal was put forward by Rajesh Tope, Minister for Higher and Technical Education that the government should allow students’ unions and political parties to enter college campuses for the council elections. This proposal had frightened students since the involvement of political parties would generate bloodshed in the elections as has been seen in the past; but as there was a delay in revision of the proposal the elections have been carried out within the colleges keeping the political parties away. Dr. Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU said, “We will be looking into this issue along with the Students’ Welfare Department. Students should not get involved with any political parties and if they do so as per rules they will be banned from the students’ elections”.

Backs Congress high command’s order to reconsider the rejection of Adarsh panel report
By Suyash Padate
A
dding fuel to the fire, the NCP yesterday backed Rahul Gandhi’s stance for reconsideration of state government’s decision rejecting a judicial panel’s report on Adarsh society scam which had indicted senior Congress leaders, including four former Chief Ministers. The NCP has left no stone unturned to corner Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and is adding fuel to the fire by supporting the Congress vice-president’s demand. NCP leader Tariq Anwar has made it clear that his party will support any move to review the state cabinet’s decision. The decision to reject the report was apparently taken in haste. It was not correct to reject the commis-
sion’s report so there is a need to review it. Congress President Sonia Gandhi had on Saturday indicated that the Maharashtra government would reconsider its decision to reject a judicial commission’s report on Adarsh housing scam, a day after Rahul Gandhi ticked off the state government over the issue. Now Congress’ alliance partner NCP has also towed the line of Congress just to make Chavan unstable. It may be recalled that Chavan had taken a firm stand regarding the Irrigation scam in the state. He wanted to set up a commission of inquiry with wide-ranging powers to investigate the irrigation scam, but was forced to dilute the SIT’s terms of reference due to political compulsions. The alleged
malpractices in the state water resources department occurred under the watch of the NCP, which has controlled this ministry for long. The Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar resigned briefly last year after his alleged involvement in approving projects with huge cost escalations by circumventing
norms came to light. However, within three months he returned to the cabinet. Since then, the NCP was gunning for Chavan’s head. The party was looking for an opportunity to corner the CM. With the Congress high command’s stance over the Adarsh society report NCP hoped onto the bandwagon.
SIT seeks more time
A
special investigation team (SIT) led by water expert Madhav Chitale has sought a twomonth extension to complete its probe into the multi-crore irrigation scam. The decision to seek a two-month extension was taken by the committee, which is cur-
rently operating from Aurangabad. The committee is yet to scrutinise various papers and statistics related to the scam. Now the cabinet will take a call in this regard. If accepted, the SIT will get time to submit the report by the end of February next year.

evelers, who are planning to celebrate the arrival of the New Year at Adivasi Pada inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), need to think again. Officials from the Forest department are going to keep a close watch on people who sneak inside the National Park’s tribal belt for New Year celebrations. According to sources, the Adivasi Pada inside SGNP is a hotspot among youngsters during the holiday season. “People go inside to booze and they have fun even though it is a restricted area. While some people prefer to book farm houses or lodges, there are many who like to sneak inside the Adivasi Pada so that they can create a bonfire in the open and enjoy boozing and singing loudly throughout the night”, sources said. Sources added that the newly appointed Director of SGNP, Vikas Gupta has made arrangements to keep a close watch on those who try to sneak inside the park after the restricted hours to celebrate the New Year. This comes after residents of the locality complained to the forest officers that revelers try to sneak inside

Even though there is security during regular days, this time special team has been formed to handle this
menace during the New Year. We will also appoint plain clothed officers inside the park to keep a watch on the revelers, if any”. Vikas Gupta said, “Those who are found to be violating any rule will be punished in accordance to the law”. The officials have also informed that there will be strict checking on the main gates of the park so that no alcohol bottles can be taken inside. The gates of the park will close at 5.30 pm after which no vehicles will be allowed entry inside the park. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Vijay Patil added, “Cops will be deployed at JNPT, Mahape junction, Karal bypass, Palaspe Phata, Mukand Steel Company naka, Navada bypass and also at the entry and exit points of the five APMC markets”. “Drunken driving is the biggest issue as people from Mumbai and the peripheral areas of Panvel come to the city for a joy ride on December31. Last year, 175 people were booked for drunken driving and were produced before the court on January 1. This year 65 beat marshal teams will be on roads throughout the night”, said Shrikant Pathak, deputy commissioner of police (crime). The traffic department will be conducting 40 nakabandis across the city and will also keep a stern watch on issues like driving without seatbelts, riding bikes without helmet etc. Pathak added, “A strict watch will be kept at places like Sagar Vihar, Mini Seashore as there were few cases registered last year for drinking at these places”. Patil made it a point saying, “Awareness campaigns will be beneficial for the motorists as this will help in reducing the number of accidents and sexual harassment cases this year”.

Frightening revelation by IM terrorist Bhatkal T
HERE has always been huge concern in India and western nations of the world that nuclear weapons might fall into the hands of terrorists. Terrorists are roaming freely in Pakistan and there does not seem to be any effort on the part of the government to stop their violent activities. Terrorists are considered as heroes in Pakistan: they are receiving army-type training in handling of sophisticated weapons. If by some chance, deadly weapons fall into their hands, they can undertake violent operations in Kashmir and elsewhere in India. A frightening scenario has emerged during questioning of an IM terrorist by the police. He said he was working on a plan to get a small nuclear bomb and explode it in Surat. Yasin Bhatkal, who was caught by India, has revealed his plan to the police who are questioning him ever since his arrest in Nepal. He has stated that he asked his boss Riaz Bhatkal – who is in Pakistan – to provide him with a small nuclear bomb. To the query by Yasin Bhatkal whether the securing of a nuclear bomb could be arranged, Riaz Bhatkal's reply was anything can be arranged in Pakistan. The boss was however not in favour of using the nuclear bomb in Surat, since it would also kill Muslims. It is not difficult to find places – religious gatherings like Kumbh Mela – where Hindus alone will be present. Yasin Bhatkal's statement should be taken seriously. The big question is whether Pakistan has “small nuclear bombs”. This needs intensive investigation. At the LoC, the guns have gone silent but evidently it is not going to be a permanent happening. At Kupwara along the LoC, a huge catche of arms has been found. What does this indicate? Pakistan must have dumped it at Kupwara. What we see could be only a lull before the storm. Even as Pakistan resorts to continuing doublespeak, it is making preparations for the “liberation of Kashmir”. The ISI in Pakistan would not mind if some nuclear bomb explosions take place in India.

HE year 2013 was grey and grim. Prices rose, unemployment increased, moral standards fell and corruption was accepted as a normal phenomena. Parliament and state legislatures hardly functioned. Then there was summer in the cold month of December. The 46-year-old Lokpal Bill became an act. I wish the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had been made independent, directly under parliament. But since its own committee has prepared the bill after holding consultations with nearly all political parties, it should constitute the Lokpal (Ombudsman). The credit must go to Gandhian Anna Hazare who spearheaded the movement. Yet his hasty judgment and harsh words for the Aam Admi Party (AAP) do hot help the dissemination of fresh ideas. The party is an extension of voluntary work done by the activists at the grassroots. These people are naïve and do not know the tricks of politics. This is their strength.

people, would not have come about if parliament had not enacted the law. Her brief stint with Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s National Advisory Council should have proved how the land acquisition and the food security demands became laws because Sonia Gandhi represented the authority of the governing party. People’s movements cannot be end by itself. Another striking feature of December is the emergence of Rahul Gandhi as the leader of the Congress. Sonia Gandhi has stepped back. Lately he is speaking and taking stances which may force the intelligentsia to rethink about his capability, written off earlier. Maybe, he is beginning to peak when Narendra Modi, the prime ministerial candidate of
Faith in the ballot That they, unlike the Naxalites, have put their faith in the ballotbox and have successfully fought the state election in Delhi is the result of their realistion that democracy demands a way to determine who will direct the people to reject dictatorships or an authoritarian system. How far the AAP can ensure the people’s participation as well as sovereignty may decide the fate of other experiments born out of millions of mutinies, however small, waging in the country. In fact, leading activists like Medha Patkar, Aruna Roy and Nikhil Dey should assemble on the platform which the AAP has provided. By no means should they leave their ideal to strengthen the people’s movements to put pressure on the government. But why don’t they constitute the governments themselves? Had Medha headed the Gujarat government the height of the Narmada Dam would have been decided by her to avoid the uprooting of people from their homes and hearths. In fact, the very dam, to which she objected, may have been replaced by a series of small dams which would have assured water to far-flung places like Rajkot and still not disturbed lakhs of people, most of them not getting land for land. Aruna Roy should have realised that the Right to Information, for which she mobilised
BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is lessening in gathering people’s attention because he peaked too early. This takes me to the Modi phenomenon. No doubt, he has jolted the political parties and the people. He speaks excellently in Hindi and goes down well in northern India. The rout of the Congress in Rajasthan in the state election has been primarily because of Modi. He even increased the tally of seats in Madhya Pradesh. Yet Modi has not clicked in West Bengal, Odhisha, Kerala, the northeastern states and to a large extent in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Even otherwise, his preference of Hindu nationalism in place of Indian nationalism has alienated the minorities, particularly the Muslims who influence the outcome on the parliamentary elections at least in 200 constituencies out of 545.The BJP may emerge the largest party in the next
Tips to help you stick to your New Year's Resolution I
T's the season for resolutions. This is how we see it. New Year resolutions can be the same routine over and over again with nothing to show for it at the end. You make resolutions, year in year out, never lasting for more than a few days ending up lost and in the same place you started. Allow me to suggest five resolution tips that may help you. Hopefully, this time around you can stick to your resolution creating long-lasting positive change in your life.
Tell others about your resolution Telling other people about your plan can help in many ways. First, it is always easier to stick to a resolution when you have other people supporting you in this endeavour. Beyond serving as your personal team of cheerleaders as you maintain your resolution, your friends are also less likely to tempt you with whatever it is you are trying to control if they know that you made a resolution about it. For example, if your resolution was about healthy eating, your friends are less likely to bring over your favorite ice-cream for movie night if they know you are keeping away from such foods. Telling other people about your resolution is also helpful in that it keeps up the pressure on you to try and stick to your plan of action.
Lok Sabha, going to the polls in May. The defeat of the Congress in the four states, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Delhi is a clear indication of people’s antiCongress mood. But it does not mean that Modi is the next prime minister. The BJP may have to have a more acceptable person to form the government. He has not even said “sorry” for the loss of lives and property of Muslims in the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. There is a possibility of a dark horse, anon-Congress and a non-BJP person, who will have the support of regional parties to be the prime minister. It all depends on the election results.
Outcries against corruption Lately, there are so many outcries against corruption that the political parties have begun to pay heed to morality. One example is that of Delhi legislature. Even though the BJP was only short of four members for the formation of the government, it did not try to prod or get the support of independents. The party said that it did not get the mandate, something which was never the case before. This is a goodbeginning. Whether the political parties admit it or not, the AAP has set into motion an era which is harking back on the values. What has been disturbing in the year 2013 is the rise of communalism. To an extent, it is Modi’s divisive politics which he has camouflaged under the garb of development. Once a pracharak of the RSS, he is creating a wedge between Hindu and Muslims who have been living in peace for more than a thousand years. The worst fallout of his propaganda has been the killing of Muslims in Muzzafarnagar. They were sharing a common life. But this did not fit into the BJP’s scheme of things. The police force was, as usual, partisan. The victims are still languishing in camps despite the claimby state chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to be pro-Muslim.That is the reason why the Prevention of Communal Violence Bill should have been enacted during the winter session. This would have enabled the central government to intervene at a place where the police force was contaminated and where the state administration lax. Parties can tear a leaf out of the book of AAP. It has initiated a politics that transcends caste and creed. The AAP’s success shows that the people are ready for it. Create resolution visual aids A colleague of mind decided one year for his New Year's resolution to be more frugal. He decided to try and save money by lowering his monthly bills. So he posted a copy of his highest electric bill by the thermostat of his heater so that every time he wanted to raise the temperature on the thermostat he will see the high electric bill reminding him to be more cautious about his energy consumption. His place was freezing but he stuck with his resolution.
Choose a specific resolution Instead of resolving to ‘look better’ or ‘have a better relationship with so and so’, choose a more definable and explicit resolution that can be accomplished in units of behavior. Choose a behavior that you can clearly tell, as the year unfolds, if you are accomplishing your goals. Resolving to "eat a vegetable every day," or "go out for coffee once a week with John," is a much easier resolution to track and assess if you are succeeding than a general Start with a ceremony resolution to "be a better person." Finally, kick off your resolution with a bang. Often, resolutions begin and end with an idea. The goal is to launch the idea into action. Getting started requires a push which then can be maintained with the tips noted above. KickBuild in a reward system start your resolution with some type of event Connected to the last tip of choosing a or ceremony. Kallis the colossus!
‘QUIET flows the Don’ is the title of a famous novel, and we can now say ‘Quiet plays Kallis’, with a lot of admiration for the strongman of the Proteas Team who has sung the swansong of his professional career with a magnificent century in the Durban test, compiled with great patience and concentration. Kallis has always kept a low-profile and played the game like a gentleman in the mould of our own Dravid. It also needs to be said that the Proteas are not given to heroworship though they have had several brilliant batsmen and bowlers. Retirement for cricketers is a natural part of the game and there was no hype of any sort about the great player calling it a day on his own. When he has scored 13,289 runs in only 166 tests, he would have probably — Mohsin Mansoor Darvesh overhauled Sachin’s tally of 15,921 runs if he had played 200 tests in another two years! ting greats like Kohli and Pujara will do well to take a leaf out of Kallis’ book. — Dr.V. Subramanyan, Thane
SOUTH African star Jacques Kallis created history by scoring his 45th century in style and helping South Africa to touch the 500 run mark, thus establishing a handsome lead. At a time when de Villiers hit his 10th consecutive 50 in test match cricket, Kallis applied himself to the bowling and made a match of it at the end. Kallis to South Africa was Sachin Tendulkar to India. However, Kallis was considered the greatest of all-rounders who crossed Rahul Dravid’s aggregate of a test tally and took his 200th catch as well in the Kingsmead Test, thus making him the third best in the highest tally of runs in test cricket after Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Pointing. Kallis is really king of World Cricket and his retirement from test cricket has left a big vacuum in the game. — C.K. Subramaniam, Navi Mumbai
Check train coaches TWENTY six were killed and nearly 39 injured when an AC coach of the Bangalore-Naded express caught fire near Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh. The disaster could have led to a higher toll, had the motorman not detached the compartment. It is time that all AC coaches are checked to avoid serious fire accidents. The Railway Minister should look into the matter and figure out the causes for the frequent fires inside AC compartments. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion
Help the poor in winter INDIA is still under a cloud, for millions of families just survive on Rs. 45 a day. My eyes are moist when I read sorry tales of abject poverty in times of inflation when even those who are better off are finding it hard to manage. It is tough for the poor to even think of buying warm clothes for the winter. If we all can spare a little and buy blankets, sweaters and sheets for the deserving we will do something that will make others lives easier. — Altaf H. Ladiwala, Bandra

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2013
THOUGH the news of Jacques Kallis’ retirement comes out earlier than expected, his contribution to cricket has been magnificent. Kallis is the broad-shouldered colossus of the South African team, a figure whose looming presence inspires calm in some and dread in others. His all-rounding performance in all forms of cricket sets an example for many youngsters who have just entered the world of cricket. Kallis is a fine, forceful batsman who has at his disposal both a rock-solid technique and a mind impervious to distraction. Though his role as a bowler diminishes with each passing season, he will be remembered as a purveyor of sometimes surprising pace and swing, and awkward bounce. Jacques, we thank you not just for what you have meant to cricket and indeed to the world of cricket, but more particularly for the examples you have set. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours.

Party like a
smarty
Tonight doesn’t have to be a night full of overindulgence and tomorrow morning doesn’t have to be spent lying in your bed with a splitting headache... if you party smart. Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry give you simple tips and tricks that will help you stay healthy, look your best for the New Year’s bash and prevent a dreadful hangover
A
s you’re reading this, we’re sure that you’re in a hurry to get to office (unless you’re one of those lucky few who has an off today), finish off your work as soon as you can and rush back home to get ready to bring in the New Year. However, instead of skimming through the paper, slow down and read this article. We aren’t going to harp on being healthy — after all, if there’s one night when you can give yourself a free pass to indulge and enjoy, it should be tonight — but instead, we are going to talk about tips to avoid a hangover tomorrow, keeping yourself energised throughout the night, looking your best and how to avoid any embarrassing scenes (read: throwing up) at tonight’s party. So, read on and Happy New Year in advance!
Prevent a hangover Is the idea of suffering from an unbearable hangover going to keep you from truly enjoying yourself? Well, if you follow these simple tricks, you won’t have to be worried about the after effects: Drink slow Your liver can process just one standard drink per hour and the faster you drink, the more chances of suffering from a hangover and you feeling sick. Also, think of it this way — if you drink too much, too soon, you won’t actually be able to enjoy the party because you’ll end up feeling sick and passing out. So, nurse your drink slowly and avoid participating a lot in bottoms-up competitions and shots. eat before you Drink The way people usually go about drinking is to drink first and then eat dinner. But, drinking on an empty stomach is a sure-shot way to wake up with a headache. Instead, have a light dinner before you head out — preferably something which has meat or carbohydrates as that will help break down the alcohol. Continued on pg 14 «

Water betWeen drinks This is hands-down, the best way to avoid a hangover. Dehydration is one of the biggest reasons for suffering from a hangover. So, for every drink that you consume, drink a glass of water.
Many hours spent standing and dancing are on the cards if you’re heading out on New Year’s Eve. These are a few tips that will make sure your feet are prepared for the party.
no ‘diet’ mixers Surprised? Well, using calorie laden sodas as mixers might not bode well for your diet, but the fact is that their sugar content helps your body the next morning. Depletion of the body’s glucose levels (something which alcohol causes) is another reason for a hangover and using diet mixers means that there’s nothing to replenish the lost sugar.
stay safe
While it is a good idea to let loose for one night, drunk driving isn’t — under any circumstances. Make sure one of your friends is the designated driver for the night. Alternatively, hire a car for the night to ferry you around as you gallivant and always keep emergency numbers handy, in a notebook. Nothing’s worse than having to look-up numbers during an emergency with a dwindling phone battery.
befriend closed shoes If you are headed for a large-scale NYE bash, chances are, so are 300 other people. After a while it is bound to get crowded with plenty of scope for people to trip, stamp and fall over. Ladies, skip the strappy sandals and pick a pair of pumps or peep-toes instead. Similarly, men should avoid sandals. Closed shoes give your feet some protection from others who may end up stamping your foot or stubbing your toes. don’t go mall-hopping Try not to strain your feet too much. Avoid anything that may involve too much walking prior to the party. Rule out trips to the mall, the park or even a well-meaning jog. You may not feel the pain immediately, but in a few hours, the cumulative effect of all the walking will hit your feet. Not the wisest move if you plan on being out all night long. hydrate In all likelihood, you aren’t going to be wearing your most comfy pair of shoes on NYE. If your body isn’t hydrated, chances are your feet will start experiencing cramps, making it rather difficult to have a good time. To be on the safe side, drink lots of water to eliminate this cause for concern. striking a balance We know you want to wear good looking shoes when you’re headed out on this night and you’ve perhaps even bought a special pair for
look picture perfect New Year’s Eve is most definitely the time to go all out. Here are some tips on looking picture perfect with a fraction of the effort.
diet don’ts We know that you are aware of all the diet rules and regardless of us reminding you, you’re probably not going to follow them tonight. But, there are some mistakes that you can end up making which will ruin your experience tonight by making you sick or tired. So, keep these tips in mind: stay hydrated Yes, we just talked about drinking water in the Prevent a Hangover section, but water plays a role in much more than that. From feeling dizzy to feeling fatigued — the solution to that is drinking water. So, make sure that you don’t forget to drink enough water through the night. Watch the carbs Foods such as rice, pasta and bread might be a good idea before a party to prevent hunger and a hangover, but they aren’t so during the night. The reason is that they release glucose in your blood stream very quickly, making you feel tired. Don’t go overboard in consuming carbs if you want to party through the night. little of everything This is not just to prevent you from overindulging; a little bit of everything will ensure that you eat most of the food groups that you can. This will be something similar to a balanced diet — basically meaning that you won’t be overindulging in carbs or sugary foods — both of which can make you fatigued.
bad hair day? On the days you want to look your best, chances are your hair feels quite the opposite. Make sure you spritz some hair spray after styling it. Not only will your hair behave, it will also not budge when exposed to heat, humidity and sweat. If the men are more comfortable with a mousse or gel, use that. Remember, a tiny blob will do the job so refrain from applying too much. slip it on Have you come back from a long day at work only to realise that those black shoes you thought you’d wear for the party will only result in five more hours of agony as you stand, dance and push your way through the crowds? New Year’s is more about the spirit and less about what you thought you’d wear. >> Applying some hair spray will take care of any bad hair day problems you might suffer from today
>> Wear comfortable shoes if you want to dance the night away the occasion. However, being a little accommodating can save you a lot of pain. Pick a pair of shoes you’ve worn before so you don’t have to break into them while you dance on NYE. Also, a word of caution to the women — wear heels you can actually walk in. Sixinch high stilettos look fabulous, but what’s the point if you’re going to start stumbling in an hour of wearing them?! The pain they cause can be a massive spoiler.
before the party As long as they’re presentable and semiformal, slip on a pair of loafers or sneakers and you’ll be just fine — this will also give your feet some much needed break. blinding sparkle Yes, we know you love bling and all things that shine. But, that doesn’t mean you slather glitter all over yourself! Go easy on the sparkle sprays, shimmer lotions and sparkly eyeshadows. diets of 2013
>> As more and more people took to healthier eating in 2013, not all the diets on this list are good for you. Weigh the pros and cons before you embark on one
Images Shutterstock
Google’s list reveals what the world has been looking for all year. And when it comes to diet, this year’s search didn’t include any diets with bizarre techniques or chemicals. Priyanka Singh brings you the top 10 most searched diets of 2013
#10 Flexitarian diet U.S. News & World Report said that this diet is for ‘casual vegetarians’ — that is, those who prioritise a plantbased diet and try to stick to it for most part, but also like to tuck into a piece of sushi or chicken every once in a while. Thanks to its balanced meal plans, flexibility and overall healthiness, the Flexitarian Diet was ranked as the sixth healthiest diet in 2013 by the news organisation.
#9 Pescetarian diet Pescetarians eat a vegetarian diet with the addition of fish. This can be for health or ethical reasons. In terms of its health quotient, a Pescetarian Diet can be wholesome if you do not indulge in unhealthy fish such as imported shrimp and American eel.
#8 Fruitarian diet While an all fruit diet has been around for ages, this one is a potentially dangerous spin on it in the form of 80:10:10. It was particularly popular on the social media site Instagram, where people posted pictures of their good looking all-fruit meals. However, the diet made a buzz on a worldwide level when actor Ashton Kutcher
revealed that his all-fruit regimen (to help him lose weight to play lean Apple founder, Steve Jobs), landed him in the hospital. Nutritionists point out that eating only fruit means you’ll miss out on essential fatty acids, protein and other nutrients you need.
#7 OmnivOre diet The Omnivore Diet allows the person to eat everything that he or she likes to eat — plants and animals. The diet made a buzz on the internet because of Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which served as a call to action for those who enjoyed eating meat and animal products but wished to support an ethical farming system as well.
#6 Okinawa diet Japanese people are the most likely to make it past 100, so adopting a traditional Japanese diet improves anyone’s odds, right? Well, probably not. But it certainly can’t hurt, at least that’s what this diet seems to suggest. The Okinawa Diet consists of fresh vegetables, tofu, whole grains and fatty fish and encourages moderation with all things sweet, alcoholic or with saturated fats.
#5 ketOgenic diet The Ketogenic Diet, which involves high-protein, high fat foods and banishes any hint of added sugar or refined carbs, was originally created as a treatment for those with chronic epilepsy. But, the diet now has a following among healthy adults who think it may be a good weight management system. In an ideal ketogenic eating plan, 60% of calories come from fat, 35% from protein and 5% from carbs. That’s much lesser than what most of us eat. The goal is to bring your body into ketosis — a starvation state in which, starved of glucose from dietary carbohydrates, your body produces ketones in the liver. These compounds allow your body to process fat as energy, which can lead to weight loss. As it is a medical therapy for many people, ketogenic eating can cause several complications that include high cholesterol and chronic constipation among other issues.
#4 master cleanse diet Despite many studies done in order to prove the uselessness of this diet, it continues to generate interest. Just to clear the air, no one should follow this diet. The diet consists of
giving up food for some time in favour of a homemade cocktail of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. During this period, you will feel hungry, get headaches, experience fatigue, dizziness, sluggishness, diarrhea, nausea or constipation.
#3 mediterranean diet The Mediterranean Diet emphasises polyunsaturated fats, fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, beans and seeds. 2013 continued to be a good year for this diet plan, which is based on traditional eating habits of Greek, Spanish and Italian cultures. A large study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that following this diet was associated with improved health for more than 10,000 middle-aged women who participated in the study.
#2 Juice cleanse diet Similar to the Master Cleanse, this diet involves consuming juiced fruits and veggies for three to 14-day intervals. However, there’s no research that proves its benefits and plenty that suggests it isn’t all that beneficial. A 2003 study of adult men who fasted for
eight days found that although cholesterol, insulin and nonesterified fatty acids were lower after eight days, within a week, those levels had returned to their pre-fasting rates.
#1 PaleO diet With accessible recipe and lifestyle blogs such as Nom Nom Paleo and Paleo OMG, 2013 was the year of Paleo — the Stone Age or caveman diet. While its benefits are debated, there are some lessons we can all take away from Paleo, like eating whole foods and avoiding refined sugar, along with flour and processed meat.

soothe sores Y
ou are sweating it out, pumping iron and pushing yourself to do that one extra repetition, so the muscle soreness that follows after an intense workout is inevitable. Although temporary, it hinders everyday movements and causes a lot of discomfort. However, even though it cannot be wiped out completely, muscle soreness can be controlled with certain treatments and procedures. These not only reduce pain and increase mobility post an arduous workout, but also help your body recover quickly and help it respond better to your exercise regime.
Stretch it out When you engage your muscles in rigorous exercise, they tighten up to deliver. Ending your workout with light stretches will help greatly. This helps bring the muscle back to its original position and elasticity, increasing blood flow, which goes a long way in helping you avoid muscle soreness. If your muscles continue to stay in their contracted position, the chance of you experiencing stiffness are higher.

>> A rigorous workout often causes sore muscles. We tell you how you can soothe them
In a recent study conducted by researchers at Georgia College and State University, it was found that consuming a small quantity of ginger on a daily basis helped ease muscles stiffness. A positive change was recorded within 11 days of the participants consuming two grams of ground ginger per day. The best part is that less discomfort means your body’s range of motion improves, which helps to get more out of your workout.

The most dreaded part of a workout, is the muscle soreness that follows. Shirley Mistry tells you how to deal with the aches the shower and alternate between cold and hot water. Try to remain under the water for two minutes before you switch to the other temperature. Start off by doing this for five or six minutes and slowly work your way up to 10 minutes. This method helps drain the lactic acid from your body that is produced when your muscles are strained, which can then lead to soreness.
get a deeP-tiSSue maSSage once a month If you have the time and know a good masseuse, invest an hour in a deep-tissue massage, once a month. The massage removes the knots in your muscles and improves circulation as well. A massage is a blessing for your tired muscles and eases the strain they undergo during a workout. Light stretching and sitting in a sauna for a few minutes prior to your massage will give you further benefits.
muStard bathS & lemon toWelS It may sound slightly unusual, but we assure you that following this method will deliver results. Mustard has been known to reduces pain signals sent to the brain. It also dilates blood vessels that help increase blood flow, which in turn reduce aches and sores. Add about 1/3 cup of yellow mustard powder to a cup of Epsom salt, add it to your bath water and soak. Also, for a quick spot treatment, mix the juice of four or five lemons along with two or three tablespoons of honey and heat the mixture in a microwave for roughly 30 seconds. Then, soak a towel in the mixture and apply it to the sore areas while it is still warm. This works well, as lemon is a natural anti-inflammatory ingredient.
« Know more: The plyomeTric worKouT Tired of your regular workout and want to do something new? Try the plyometric workout, says Rhea Dhanbhoora
I
f regular workouts are beginning to get boring and you want to switch things up a little, you should give the plyometric workout a shot. A plyometric routine is quick and designed in such a way that it boosts the efficiency of your workout without the long, slow movements that you may have begun to find a drag. The workout consists of rapid muscle lengthening, a short resting period and then an explosive muscle shortening movement. All the exercises are performed quickly, decreasing the time between movements to become faster and to increase your power. The origin of plyometrics is actually quite interesting because it was developed during the Cold War by a Russian scientist. The workout saved time and got people moving faster and also make them stronger. Sports athletes use this type of workout a lot in their training regimes for obvious reasons.
What it can do for you Apart from the obvious benefit to your muscles, plyometric movements can also benefit your tendons, which means
you will suffer from fewer injuries, especially if you like playing sports. Another benefit of this type of workout is that it strengthens your nervous system, helping to relax your muscles and increase and maintain your speed and power.
What you’ll be doing If you plan to start such a workout, you’ll be doing a number of exercises that include squat jumps, lateral jumps and a lot of skipping. Here are a few exercises to get you started: Skipping The reason this is different is because it’s power skipping — you have to jump and lift your knees as high as you can while you’re doing it. However, just be careful not to get tangled in the rope! tuck & jump This is like jumping up and down for fun, but when you’re in the air, quickly pull your knees up to your chest. Then, straighten and land on the balls of your
feet on the way down. Continuously repeat this a few times for an intense and effective workout. Push ups Plyometric push ups involve lowering yourself to the floor and lifting yourself up with a lot of force — so much so, that your hands leave the floor. out of the box A sturdy box-like object will do just fine if you don’t have an actual box for this one. The height depends on how much you can take, so keep challenging yourself as you go along. You have to jump onto the box and then down to the other side repeatedly.
get going The aforementioned points must have given you an idea that this workout is really intense. You’ll be putting a lot of stress on your joints and tendons. Make sure you start slow and ask your trainer at your gym for tips and guidance before you take up the plyometric workout.

fiNdiNg AllergieS How do you know whether you’re suffering from a seasonal sniffle or an allergy? Rhea Dhanbhoora helps you find out
H
ave you been putting up with congestion and the sniffles, pinning it down to a constant change in weather or the office cold that is going around in circles? You might actually be suffering from an allergy and not even realise! Allergy symptoms that aren’t treated early tend to get worse over time, but how can you tell the difference? The most important difference between a cold and an allergy is the time span for which it lasts. While a cold usually dissipates in a week to 10 days, allergies stick around for much longer and you could also experience itchiness, or start sneezing only in a particular environment. Take a look at a few ways to check whether you have an allergy:
Did you know that the term ‘nervous breakdown’ is not a one but an umbrella phrase to indicate several psychological issues? As instances of nervous breakdowns are becoming common, Priyanka Singh tells you all that you need to know about this euphemism
I
n the middle ages, a nervous breakdown was called melancholia. The 1900s addressed it as neurasthenia. The term nervous breakdown came into existence in the ’30s. It is not a clinical term and has no psychiatric definition. It also has nothing to do with nerves. A nervous breakdown is an unscientific term that is no longer used in psychiatry. Laymen still use it to characterise a range of mental illnesses, but it generally describes ‘snapping’ under immense pressure, mental collapse or mental and physical exhaustion. Nervous breakdowns are rampant now because overwhelming stressors, such as working crazy hours with no downtime, have become widespread.

WhAt next?
The feeling that it’s all just too much to handle is something that can happen to anyone, but it could indicate an underlying condition for which treatment is available. Whether it’s for you or for someone you care about, take action. If you or someone you know is experiencing intense levels of any of the aforementioned symptoms, seek professional care from a psychiatrist and follow through with appointments to ensure better recovery. Whether you’re a caregiver or just concerned about the mental health of someone, keep in mind that the person who’s experiencing these symptoms may not have enough motivation to face their problems alone. He or she can benefit from your help and encouragement. WhAt Are the SIgnS?
Your nose is always stuffy: Forget changes in weather, your nose is runny 365 days of the year! Sometimes it could be due to your environment and at other times you won’t even know what set it off. To check, start noting down when and where you sneeze most. Is there dust around the area or pets? Look for things that aren’t present in other environments where you don’t have a stuffy nose. It’s seasonal: Seasonal allergies can be mistaken for seasonal illnesses. Determine which seasons you’re more likely to feel this around. Do you sniffle most during winter or are summer colds what affect you? Recognising this might make you more aware of your allergy. Measure the pressure: If you’ve got sinus pressure (which means pressure around your forehead, cheeks and eyes) you could have an internal cold but it could also be a sign of an allergy. Sneezing constantly: If you find yourself sneezing whenever you walk into your office, there may be something there that’s causing an allergy! Find out whether you sneeze most around dust, pollen or other triggers. Your eyes water: While your eyes will water when they’re tired, when you’ve used the computer too much or worn contact lenses for too long, if your eyes water constantly for no reason, there could be something in the air causing an allergy.
Food AllergIeS
While for most food allergies you need to take a diagnostic test, there are ways you can check for yourself. Food allergies, unlike other food related illnesses, usually show up 30 minutes after you eat the food that you’re allergic to. You can get hives, rashes, a stomach ache or constipation. Common allergens include shellfish, peanuts, eggs, tropomyosin (a protein) or casein (found in milk). You could also be allergic to additives or preservatives. So, if a rash comes up, eliminate these foods from your diet, one at a time, to see if any of them are the triggers. However, don’t remove them all at once without consulting a doctor first!

I always thought that acne was a teenage problem and I am at an absolute loss to understand how this problem suddenly came up. I have started using anti-acne products and treatments. But, I want to know why I broke out? Should I be worried? — reema Shaikh, Andheri Dear reema, Though acne is a condition that is common among teenagers, it is not true that once you are an adult, you cannot suffer from acne. One of the biggest reasons for acne, regardless of your age,
is hormone changes. Hormonal imbalances aren’t just limited to your teenage years and though you don’t need to be too worried, at your age, the imbalances could be a result of female gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis or cystic ovaries. We advise visiting a gynaecologist just to be sure. Dear Barbara, I ride my motorcycle a lot and of late, I have noticed dandruff that refuses to go away. I shampoo once every two days but it doesn’t help. Is it possible that my helmet is the reason behind this? What can I do to deal with this? — rahul Sharma, Khar (w)

Dear rahul, Helmets do not cause dandruff. But, it is possible that the cushioning of your helmet might be unclean due to sweat and dirt and this could irritate your scalp. So, take off your cushioning and wash it with soapy water. Also, it seems that your current shampoo is either not suiting your scalp or is just not good enough to deal with your problem. So, change your shampoo to a better, anti-dandruff one. Also, while applying conditioner, make sure that you don’t apply it to your scalp — that can sometimes lead to dandruff. Dynamics of people’s movement in mainstream Indian politics

The irony of politics is as complex as is simple. Political parties hopefully are aware that truckloads of ‘bought-out’ crowds is on the decline as bona fide, change-seeking masses are now participating in growing numbers to express support to cleaner politics, says Qureish Raghib
T
O what extent political India would change in the near future is getting more intriguing by the day. There is an evident shift in the dynamics of national politics subsequent to the dramatic rise of new political entities applying unique subjective and objective ways to influence the masses. The incredibly innovative self-promotion tactics by commuting in public transport to take oaths of public offices to holding swearing-in ceremony at a public place rather than in the confines of traditional State institutes to refraining firecrackers and instead broom streets clean across the nation in celebration of political victory, the news crop of Indian politicians have successfully portrayed the refreshed influence of people’s movement engulfing contemporary politics in India. It may seem naïve, but it is astute politics. Its immediate effects are already seen in the desperate efforts of veteran political parties sacking incompetent legislators and public servants, dismissing controversial ordinances, demanding reviews in seedy reports, hurriedly enacting long-demanded popular Bills and even acquiring dubious clean-chits for their inhuman atrocities meted upon citizens. All this with the sudden change in arrogant political slogans replaced with public service catch-lines, evinces the encouraging transition from politicking to realpolitik. With the dramatic rise of the mass-driven, adventurous, new Aam Aadmi Party (APP), political pundits rightfully perceive the seasoned Indian National Congress and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) require tremendous political diligence to regain the confidence and trust of the Indian electorate. The recent Delhi Assembly elections are an eye-opener. Contrary to the commonly held perception, the Delhi Debacle has not only jolted the Congress out of its governance slumber, but has revealed the degree of public suspicion for the BJP. Even with three-terms of abysmal mismanaged and uneven governance of the National Capital Territory of India by the Congress, the long entrenched BJP couldn’t
with remarkable rapidity. Following the populist AAP storming into the Indian political landscape, the NaMoRaGa pre-general elections duel is of no significance to the masses. Identity politics seems to be getting obsolete. Issue-based politics appeals more to the people like never before. However, it is the amazing ferocity with which the collective behavior of the electorate to opt for performance over dynastic or ideological politics that has stumped political analysts, sociologists and politicians alike. This THE AWAKENING... The Aam Aadmi Party has already demonstrated phenomenal shift in electoral how it is hell-bent on publicly tearing apart any kind of apathy in public aptitude and attitude has policy or polity. Are we to witness a politically awakened India in the days subsequently prompted an to come? abrupt change in election strategies. Overnight, congarner an absolute majority photo-ops by BJP leaders ventional, political mudin the city-state. with a handful of Muslims to sledging has suddenly been At the national level, even lure the community or over- replaced with participatory though the BJP frantically en- play the Gujarat development democracy. Established politdeavours to capitalise on the card or opportunistically pro- ical entities are blatantly prevailing anti-Congress sen- nounce to be ‘shaken to the replicating the success-recipe timents, the absence of a reli- core’ for the colossal loss of of the AAP by candidly reachable pan-India mass-support innocent lives to beguile an ing out to people by public delineates the overwhelming awakened national mind- consultations on what should be adopted in their election public hesitance in voting the scape. Post-Delhi elections, the manifestos. Addressing real BJP to the Centre. Political observers aptly believe it will Congress too has learnt the issues rather than surreal need much more than the oc- hard way that public mood ones is suddenly getting casional stage-managed can have a paradigm shift more audible in this parlia-
mentary election campaigns. Minority communities are now having their long-pending demands acknowledged by law-makers who have exploited the carrot and stick ploy to the hilt while delaying grants to Waqf boards to holding back land approvals to biased judiciary promulgations. Communalism, Commissions and Committees are now being swapped out for serious commitments to social justice, development and security. However, the irony of politics is as complex as is simple. Political parties hopefully are aware that truckloads of ‘bought-out’ crowds is on the decline as bona fide, changeseeking masses are now participating in growing numbers to express support to cleaner politics. Though Congress leaders as in the past have been overshadowed by Modi’s charisma for over a decade now and its ranks and allies too confused to repose faith on the then Dr. Manmoham Singh and now prime ministerial candidate Rahul Gandhi, it is the Congress that has had the last laugh and won the last two parlia-
mentary elections. Going by the massive presence of presumably genuine electorates at the AAP leaders’ swearingin event in Delhi recently, all mainstream political parties would have sleepless nights as the 16th parliamentary Lok Sabha elections inches closer. Nevertheless, even if the AAP doesn’t come to power at the Centre -- and it would be unrealistic to predict so - still, it has done its bit by making both the political class and the electorate conscious of their predicament. Post-elections, it will be interesting to observe how political parties -- whether they succeed in forming the government at the Centre or sit in the opposition -- will deal with an unconventional, watchdog-of-a-party like the AAP. The party has already demonstrated how it is hellbent on publicly tearing apart any kind of apathy in public policy or polity. Are we to witness a politically awakened India in the new 2014 year? I would like to remind all service providers, both registered and unregistered, that this scheme is open till 31-12-2013 only. There will be no extension of the scheme since the last date is laid down in the Finance Act. We are making every effort to help all declarants. the offices will be open well beyond normal working hours , in order to attend to all those who come in to file their declarations . Tomorrow, the 31st December 2013, the offices will be open till midnight to facilitate acceptance of declarations.” Incidentally, another special measure is that the Government has also extended banking hours in the designated branches, up to 6 pm on 31-12-2013. MUSICAL TREAT
By Vijay Shanker
By Amarendra Dhaneshwar
T
he Jaipur Attrauli style of vocal music was invented by the late Alladiya Khansaheb. He was born in mid 19th century and lived till mid 20th century. There is an interesting account of his musical discovery. He trained under his father and uncle and practiced what was known as Jaipur gayaki. He was so good in his vocation that he was appointed as the court singer in the Aamleta princely state which existed in those days. Due to constant singing and incessant practice, he lost his voice for a number of years. The Khansaheb turned this adversity into a blessing by looking inwards and giving a totally new orientation to his music which later came to be known as Jaipur Attrauli gayaki. Khansaheb taught it to many people. The musical style achieved tremendous popularity across the sub continent thanks to Kesarbai Kerkar. Apart from Kesarbai, singers like Moghubai, Laxmibai, Tanibai also contributed their might to the spread of the gayaki. This induced people to say that it was primarily a 'janana' style. An outstanding male singer like Mallikarjun Mansur came forward to correct this misconception. In the later generations, Raghunandan Panashikar has risen up
as a stalwart of the gharana. Panahikar is now into his late 40s. He has trained with Kishori Amonkar and was spotted as a brilliant singer. This programme was organised at the Karnataka Sangh as a tribute to the late Bhanu Charankar who was a veteran musician and a dedicated teacher who ran a music class for over 70 years. Panashikar sang khayals in morning ragas and delighted the audience. Kedar Bodas, another talented singer sang at the monthly concert organised by Dadar Matunga Cultural Centre. Bodas was born into a musical family. His grandfather Laxmanrao Bodas was a Gwalior gharana singer. His father Narayanrao Bodas is a senior exponent of the gharana. Kedar has learned not only from his father but also from the formidable musicologist Dr. Ashok Ranade. anjeev Kolte directed ‘Rangkarmi’ is a touching tale about a village boy from Satara, Keshav Inamdar (Dr. Amol Kolhe) who is crazy about theatre and in spite of parental opposition comes to Mumbai with stars in his eyes to make it big in theatre without having anything to back him up. He sleeps on park benches and survives on tea and goes from one drama theatre to another. During one of his jaunts, he gets a job as a backstage artist and is spotted by a veteran makeup-man Dwarkanath Kambli (Mohan Joshi) and seeing his flair for drama he requests a producer to give him a lead

role in a play and also gives him refuge in his house where his daughter Meenal (Sheetal Dabholkar) helps him and they fall in love. Ultimately Keshav becomes a big film star but success
spoils him and he becomes arrogant and throws his attitude and weight around people and rebuffs his mentor and takes to vices like drinking, and girls. The film is well-directed and brings out the pains of a struggler very well and the non-linear form of narrative is brilliant. But the repetitive usage of the same plays like ‘Natsamrat’, ‘Moruchi Mavshi’, ‘Sambhaji’, and ‘Vahto Hee Durvanchi Judi’ jars the screenplay slightly. The climax too is a bit stretched. Dr. Kolhe has a good role and he does full justice to it. Mohan Joshi is a veteran with such roles. The DOP Jitendra Achrekar has tried some unique shots.

Sarfojiraje Bhosale Centre organised the seventh Classical Dance Children's Festival ‘Kala Avishkar’ at the mini P.L. Deshpande auditorium last week. It was thrilling to watch children performing Bharata Natyam and Kathak with a lot of enthusiasm and sincerity. Nine groups of students of different mentors performed on the same platform. Although some of them were nervous, it was interesting to note how each child was trying to give the best. The programme commenced with a performance by the students of Sarfojiraje Bhosale Centre, which is headed by renowned Bharata Natyam exponent Dr. Sanddhya Purecha. It was a pleasure to watch young children executing varied ‘adavus’ to perfection, while maintaining the technical purity of the art form. The only Kathak performance of the evening was displayed by the students of Chetan Saraiya. The child dancers performed the teen-taal in the 'tatkaar’ and other pure dance aspect on the footwork, which is the highlight of any Kathak performance. The mentors whose students performed were Rateesh Babu (Bhilai), Mandeera Chowdhary, Manjiri Date, Bijal Haria, Sanyogeeta Barve, Ashwini Shelar and Kaneenica Ninawe - Ratheesh Babu's students rendered a sparkling performance portraying the goddess. While most children
danced to traditional music and dance, some of them danced to film music and fusion numbers. The 11-year-old, Master Omkar P. Ravindran, studying in Universal High school in Dahisar was the attraction of the evening for being the only male student and also for his lively dancing, incorporating invocatory ‘shloks’ and the Thillana, creating a fine impression on the audience. Omkar is the disciple of Kaneenica Ninawe and has already completed his Arangetram and is quite passionate about Bharata Natyam. Chief Guest on the occasion was well-known actor Ghanshyam Srivastva. Ghanshyam said, “Although children and youth are driven to western culture, a time will definitely come when more and more children will take to classical dance and music". Ghanshyam also praised the sincere efforts taken by Dr. Sanddhya Pureccha in promoting classical dance in a big way. In the thanksgiving address, Sandhya made a point that in a classical performance, students should strictly cater to traditional music and dance and not be influenced by film music or fusion numbers. Children form the future of the society. Hence they should be encouraged with the proper perspective.

INDIAN SAFARI ENDS South Africa clinch series 1-0 after Indian batting collapse; SA win by 10 wickets
By Chetan Narula
D
URBAN: India crashed to a humiliating 10-wicket defeat in the second cricket Test after their young batsmen surrendered meekly to give South Africa a 1-0 series triumph in Jacques Kallis' farewell match. Needing to bat out the entire fifth day's play at the Kingsmead to force a draw, the Indians had the worst possible start by losing Virat Kohli in the very first ball and never really recovered from the jolt to be bundled out for 223. Ajinkya Rahane stood bravely amidst the ruins with a gutsy 96 and was the last man out. India were pegged back after losing five wickets in the morning session. Left-arm spinner Robin Peterson (4/74) was pick of the bowler for the hosts with a four-wicket haul while pacemen Dale Steyn (3/47) and Vernon Philander (3/43) scalped three batsmen each. South Africa then chased down the small 58-run target in 11.4 overs overs as skipper Graeme Smith (27) hit a six and a four off Rohit Sharma to record their first win at Kingsmead. Alviro Petersen remained unbeaten on 31. The victory was a befitting farewell gift to their retiring hero Kallis, who himself had a memorable match by cracking his 45th Test hundred. Smith's cover drive to fence triggered off celebrations in the home camp with the players hugging each other and shaking hands while the spectators also cheered the team. For the Indians, it turned out to be a heart-breaking end to the tour, having been drubbed in the Oneday series as well. The loss was all the more disappointing since the team had fought gallantly in the thrilling drawn Test in Johannesburg. It is the fifth time that India have lost a Test series on South African soil, managing a 1-1 draw only once in 2010-11 rubber. India have never won a series in South Africa and now have lost nine of the last 10 overseas Tests. Rahane played a fine rearguard South Africa allrounder Jacques Kallis is carried by teammates after winning their test innings scoring 96 runs off 157 balls match against India on the final day at Kingsmead stadium, Durban, South Africa.
with 11 fours and two sixes, a lone hand with none of the frontline batsmen making an important contribution in order to save the match. After Steyn and Peterson did the early damage, Philander chipped in and Morne Morkel (0/34) provided able support as the Indians lost five wickets for 105 runs in the morning session. Starting at 173 for 7 after lunch, all that was left for Rahane and Zaheer Khan to do was delay the inevitable as long as possible. And they did it for nearly 10 overs, as Rahane started farming the strike. With the Proteas pacers unable to get the breakthrough and the second new ball fast approaching, Peterson was brought on in the 76th over and the move paid off two overs later, with Zaheer being trapped LBW. He scored three runs, but faced 41 balls, and put up 35 runs with Rahane. Rahane then brought out his shots in order to get to his maiden Test hundred, as he raced to the 90s. At the other end, Steyn got Ishant Sharma (1) in the 85th over and celebrated his 350th Test wicket with vigour. And in the very next over, Rahane was bowled by Philander, a huge swipe gunning for glory missing and the stumps shattered. Resuming the day on 68 for two, India had their two best batsmen -Pujara on 32 and Kohli on 11 -- at the crease, and any hopes of seeing the day out rested on their shoulders. But all of it came to nought as Kohli was out on the first delivery of the day when Steyn bowled a short of length delivery outside the offstump and the batsman played at it. Kohli, though didn't make contact, the ball seemed to have brushed his shoulder on its way to the keeper and umpire Rod Tucker adjudged him out. This was his second bad decision after giving Jacques Kallis out LBW off an inside edge in the first Test at Johannesburg. Brief Scores: India 334 & 223 in 86 overs [Ajinkya Rahane 96, Robin Peterson 4/74, Dale Steyn 3/47, Vernon Philander 3/43] lost to South Africa 500 & 59/0 in 11.4 overs [Graeme Smith not out 27, Alviro Petersen not out 31] by 10 wickets.
29 South Africa extend lead as No.1 Test side
DUBAI: South Africa strengthened their position as the number-one ranked side on the ICC Test Team Rankings table courtesy their 10wicket victory over India in the second and final Test in Durban. The 1-0 series win has helped South Africa gain two ratings points to finish on 133, while India have conceded two ratings points to end at 117. This means the gap between the two top ranked sides has now increased from 12 ratings points to 16 ratings points. Meanwhile, Australia have an opportunity to finish third on the rankings table. Australia had entered the Ashes series in fifth position on 101 ratings points, but after taking a 4-0 lead against England, they are guaranteed fourth position on the table. And Michael Clarke's side will gain one more place if they remain unbeaten in the Sydney Test, which starts on January 3. The only way England can defend their third position on the table is by winning the Sydney Test. In this scenario, England will end on 109 ratings points while Australia will finish on 108 ratings points. Pakistan, which will slip to fifth irrespective of how the Ashes conclude, can keep the pressure on Australia and England if they win the series against Sri Lanka. If Pakistan win 2-0, then they will move from 102 ratings points to 105 ratings points, while they will finish on 107 if they win all the three Tests. On the other side of the coin, Sri Lanka have a chance to move ahead of Pakistan if they win the series 2-0 or better. If they win 2-0, they will jump from 88 ratings points to 95 ratings points while Pakistan will slip from 102 ratings points to 94 ratings points. With the top four sides as of December 31, 2016 qualifying for the inaugural ICC World Test Championship scheduled for 2017, every Test counts towards the qualification. The qualification pathway for the World Test Championship is through the ICC Test Team Rankings, with the qualifying period being from May 1, 2013 to December 31, 2016. The top four teams at the conclusion of the qualification period will qualify for the event in 2017.
Kallis bids adieu to Test cricket in fairytale script D
URBAN: Jacques Kallis, one of the greatest all-rounders of the game, today bid adieu to Test cricket after an illustrious 18-year career in a fairytale script as he hit a century in his swansong match in South Africa's 10-wicket thrashing of India. The script for Kallis' Test retirement could not have been better as he ended his career as the third highest run- getter in the longest format of the game, besides also bowing out with a win by his side. The 38-year-old 'King' Kallis ended his Test career on 13,289 runs from 166 Tests, only behind Sachin Ten-
dulkar (15,921) and Ricky Ponting (13,378) in the all-time list. His batting average stood at an outstanding 55.37 and has also taken 292 wickets and 200 catches. His 45 tons in Test cricket is only second to Tendulkar's 51. Kallis will continue to play in the OneDay Internationals and he has so far scored 11,574 runs from 325 ODI matches and has taken 273 wickets at an average of 31.79. The burly South African, who made his Test debut against England here in December 1995, acknowledged that the script could South Africa's bowler Robin Peterson celebrates with teammate after dismissing India's not have been better. I could not have asked for more," Kallis said after South Africa clinched the two-match series against India 1-0 here. "Tough call (to retire from Tests). I still had the same butterflies ahead of this game, thanks to M S (Dhoni) and the (Indian) team for the guard of honour, I was glad I didn't face the next ball then," said Kallis who hit 115 in South Africa's first innings. He did not need to bat in the second innings.

EW DELHI: Delhi batsmen gave a poor account of themselves as they were shot out for a paltry 202 in their first innings against table toppers Karnataka in the crucial final group A league encounter at the Feroze Shah Kotla. Despite a blazing opening partnership of 51 runs in which Virender Sehwag, opening for the first time this season contributed 32, Delhi batsmen didn't show the required patience to stay on a slow wicket. Scoring wasn't easy on the track where the odd ball was keeping low but most of the Delhi batsmen played bad shots to throw away their wickets. Skipper Gautam Gambhir (54) got set playing 111 deliveries before a poor shot selection brought about his downfall. If one had expected rank turner, it wasn't the case as Karnataka pacers led by their skipper R Vinay Kumar (4/40 in 13 overs) and his new ball partner HS Sharath (3/58 in 19.4 overs) shared bulk of the spoils. Leggie Shreyash Gopal accounted for two wickets while Ronit More got the prize scalp of Sehwag. It was Sehwag, who started attacking from the onset as he took apart Vinay with some cracking strokes. There were a few square cuts, a flick towards deep mid-wicket boundary and an off drive. Delhi reached 50 in nine overs as Gambhir played the role of second fiddle. However, after hitting five boundaries en route his 32, Ronit, who replaced Vinay, got one onto his body and Sehwag defended awkwardly. The resultant lob was taken by the bowler himself. Once Sehwag departed, the momentum was lost. Milind Kumar (2) playing his first match of the season played away from his body as he dragged a Vinay

16 WKTS FALL IN BENGAL VS TN MATCH; PITCH COMES UNDER SCANNER CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu prepared a rank turner to get an outright result but they were in a spot of bother at stumps in the Ranji Trophy group B encounter against Bengal with as many as 16 wickets falling on the first day. Tamil Nadu spinners -- offie Malolan Rangarajan (6/30) and left-arm spinner Rahil Shah (4/65) decimated Bengal for 130 in 52 overs before the visitors hit back reducing Tamil Nadu to 66 for six in 35.1 overs. Off-spinners Saurashish Lahiri (2/27), Arnab Nandi (1/4) and Writtick Chatterjee (1/5) along with seasoned left-arm spinner Iresh Saxena (2/21) did well enough to dismiss the top-order batsmen like Abhinav Mukund (14), Baba Aparajith (8), S Badrinath (3), Baba Indrajith (3) and Dinesh Karthik (28). With 16 wickets falling on the first day itself, the 22-yard strip has come under scanner with ball turning square. The off-spinners of both sides included, have accounted for 10 of the 16 wickets to have fallen so far. For Bengal, veteran Subhamoy Das scored 36 off 49 balls with six fours and a six giving a far better account of himself. UMBAI: His may be the lone face of Indian swimming that has shone on the world stage for close to half a decade now, but Asian Games bronze medalist Virdhawal Khade has wholeheartedly blamed the system for not supporting and nurturing Indian talent forcing them to opt for different career options. Despite bringing laurels to the country, the Kolhapur born, 22-yearold swimmer said that for the sake of his family he wouldn’t mind quit swimming but was hopeful of competing till the 2016 Olympics, which is to be held in Rio de Janeiro. “You have to give time to work, being an officer I find myself responsible for many things. I need to justify that. I also want to study for the UPSC exams. In the long term I want to be there for my family, so if that affects my swimming then no one should be surprised. Everyone has a right to plan for their family. I plan to swim till 2016 Olympics,” said Khade on the sidelines of the announcement of the Mumbai Swimathon event which is to be held this Sunday across various age groups. However, Khade who is posted as a tehsildhar at the up-town suburb of Borivali as an encroachment officer, said that his priority for now will be the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Asian Games in Incheon and he would compete in

Earlier, I used to train 8-9 hours but now I can only give 5-6 hours which is a slight drawback but I am trying to cope up with work as well as swimming. Despite the success at the national and the Asian level, Khade said he feels he has improved as a person over these years. “I don’t know as a swim-
ALSAD: Former champions Mumbai suffered an unexpected batting collapse to be all out for 154 against Gujarat on day one of their final Group a Ranji Trophy match. After deciding to bat, Mumbai were 74 for six at one stage and had it not been for some gritty batting by Iqbal Abdulla (30) down the order, the visitors would have struggled to cross the 100-run mark. Abdulla was the secondhighest run scorer after opener Kaustubh Pawar, who managed 37 off 150 balls with six shots to the fence. Left-arm spinner Akshar Patel was the most successful bowler for Gujarat with three scalps for 32 runs while Ishwar Chaudhary (2/54) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/36) took two wickets each. In reply, the host were a strong 90 for two with opener Samit Gohel (36) batting solid from one end. Gujarat lost opener Smit Patel (11) cheaply, bowled by Bhargav Thakur, and later on Bhargav Merai, who was well set on 37 before being caught by Shah off Abdulla. I have seen everything as I have been around for the past 17 years and I need to give back to the game.” Speaking about the upcoming swimmers, he said that there needs to be the involvement of more money to help the swimmers compete on the international level. “There is Sandeep Sejwal, Aaron D’Souza and there are a couple of youngsters who are coming up very well. There is Manav Patel of Gujarat and Shivani Kataria of Haryana. There have potential but they need to get the right kind of support. Unfortunately in India, you start getting things [appreciation] when you reach the top. There is no support at the grassroot level. The people swimming at the national level who have immense amount of talent do not get the recognition as I would get. It so happened that when I won the medal at the Asian Games, the limelight was on me, no one saw who was winning at the national level. That didn’t matter. I think that should change. The government or the corporates should adopt the brightest talents in the country only then you can expect more Virdhawal Khades’ to be produced.”

Bedi panel crushes to defeat in DDCA polls
NEW DELHI: Sneh Prakash Bansal and his panel swept the DDCA polls with a landslide victory over former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi's faction by procuring more than 70 per cent of the votes. "The final results will be out in the evening but we have won the elections. Out of 4300 votes, we had already submitted 3400 proxy votes. So it has been a big victory for us. The members have shown their faith in us and we will have to continue
doing the good work," DDCA vicepresident Chetan Chauhan told PTI. While Bedi faction raised objections about the manner in which AGM was conducted, Bansal & Co. Showed that with the system of proxy votes in place, it's near impossible for an outsider to win an election. "The proxy vote system is allowed in company act. We are not doing anything illegal. There was an election and we have got the mandate," new president Bansal said after taking over the charge. About the allegations regarding bungling of funds and age-fudging, Bansal said, "These are all baseless things that there have been bungling of funds. Yes, there has been an SFIO (Serious Fraud Investigation Office) inquiry but corrective measures have been taken. For age fudging, we have followed the standard procedures of BCCI's age related system." Will Bedi's voice be heard by this committee, he answered, "The offer and suggestions of help have to come from their side."

RENOBLE, FRANCE: Michael Schumacher, the retired seven-time Formula One champion, has undergone brain surgery and is in a "critical" condition after striking his head in a ski accident in the French Alps yesterday, doctors said. The 44-year-old German was "suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation," the hospital in the southeastern French city of Grenoble said in a brief statement. "He remains in a critical condition." Schumacher had been skiing off-piste with his 14-year-old son in the upmarket Meribel resort, where he reportedly has a property, when he fell and hit his head on a rock. He was airlifted to a local hospital, then, an hour later, to the better-equipped Grenoble facility. A surgeon and brain specialist from Paris was rushed in to oversee his treatment. The director of the Meribel resort, Christophe GernigonLecomte, had said just after the accident that Schumacher had been wearing a helmet and was "conscious but a little agitated", suggesting he had not received life-threatening injuries. But when Schumacher then fell into coma, doctors realised the damage was worse than initially feared. Two mountain police officers who gave first aid to Schumacher said he was suffering "severe cranial trauma" when they got to him and a helicopter was brought in to evacuate him within 10 minutes.A renowned Parisian neurologist, doctor Gerard Saillant, arrived at the Grenoble hospital in a police car to help
Emanuel stars in Bombay Fort SC’s first win
MUMBAI: Lanster Fernandes scored a crucial goal for Manglore Blues SC as they overcame a resilient Karnatak Amateur team to beat them 1-0 to take home all three points in the 18th Ramanath Payyade Memorial League. The win helped Manglore Blues SC to move to the top of Table in Group C. In the second match of the day, Satya Vijaya SC failed to capitalize on the chances as both team fired blanks in an exciting but goalless draw. Satya Vijaya SC started as the favorites but, Saraswati SC displayed strong character to hold Satya Vijaya SC and made sure that they kept a clean sheet at the final whistle. In the other matches, Bombay Fort SC showed they are no pushovers by claiming all three points against Uchil United SC beating them 2-1. Emanuel M scored twice for Bombay Fort SC to help them register their first win of this league.
signed by the facility's neurosurgeon, the professor in charge of its anaesthesia/revival unit, and the hospital's deputy director. It was issued jointly with the exracer's press team in Germany. Schumacher, who lives with his family in Switzerland, was on a private stay in Meribel, according to his spokeswoman. He celebrates his 45th birthday next Friday. Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, the ski resort said. Schumacher, who won the last of his world titles in 2004, definitively retired in 2012 in the Brazilian Grand Prix, in which he finished seventh, after an abandoned attempt to quit six years earlier. Since his debut in 1991, the German towered over the sport, winning more Formula One world titles and races than any other. He had a record 91 wins and is one of only two men to reach 300 grand prix. Schumacher's duels in his heyday with Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, fired by an unquenchable competitive spirit, have gone down in Formula One lore. Schumacher was born in January 1969 near Cologne, Germany, the son of a bricklayer who also ran the local go-kart track, where his mother worked in the canteen.
