T

he Shiv Sena has brought out a 44-page booklet labelled 'Ghotalebaj' on what it calls a list of scams committed by the ruling Congress-NCP regime in the state over the last 15 years. The booklet claimed to be the brainchild of Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray lists 57 scams of varying amounts between 2010 to 2013. Ironically enough, this booklet was released at a time when the Special ACB Court convicted

The booklet was released just when the elections for the 2014 Lok Sabha were announced. The Sena was forced to replace Gholap's candidature from Shirdi (SC) Lok Sabha constituency with former MLA Sadashiv Lokhande. If that was not embarrassment enough, the booklet on scams, on page 28, lists what it calls a Rs.120 crore scam of May 2013 alAmazing! ical Education, had through the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana, indulged in a scam of purchasing medical equipment for government hospitals. Between 2008 and 2011, medical equipment worth Rs.300 crore alone was purchased for the Grant Medical College and Hospital. The booklet however, does not explain how those purchases can be quantified as a scam. The back-cover of the booklet interestingly carries a caricature of two raging bulls tagged as Nationalist Congress Party and another as Congress with a man named Shiv Sena rescuing a boy labelled as “interest of Marathi man”, with a punch line “who will safeguard your interests?... Of course Shiv Sena!” In its foreword, Thackeray appeals to the voters to oust the Congress-NCP led state government that has looted the state for the last 15 years since 1999. The list of scams includes the 2011 scams of Adarsh, fake stamp scam, PF scam, Kripashankar Singh's scam of 2012, the Rs.70,000 crore Irrigation scam and others. The booklet also contains a list of 40 scams committed by the Congress during its rule at the Centre since 1948. The first scam of Rs.80 lakh in 1948 was the Jeep purchase scam, followed by the Rs.50 lakh BHU Fund scam in 1956, the Rs.1.20 crore Mundhra scandal of 1957, the Rs.22 crore Teja loan scam of 1960, the Rs.2.2 crore Crude Oil scam of 1976, the Rs.65 crore Bofors scam of 1987, the Rs.5,000 crore Securities scam of 1992, the Rs.18,978 crore Submarine scam of 2005 and the latest 2010 Commonwealth Games scam worth Rs.40,000 crore. The Sena claims that the sum total of all the 40 scams committed by the Congress since 1948 amounts to nine hundred ten trillion, six hundred three billion, two hundred thirty-four million, three hundred thousand rupees...

he 'Lets All Be Well Red' campaign, which aims at tackling anaemia by identifying prospective anaemic women and helping them to overcome the problem by consuming an inhouse manufactured iron rich bar, launched a three-month long scientific research about anaemia in Mumbai on Sunday wherein women from across the city will be enrolled. This research which will be conducted by 10 medical students from Duke University who will be staying in Mumbai for a week. This project involves daily consumption of iron bars called GudNess Bar, by women in the age bracket of 18 to 35 years for three months and their blood will be tested at 0, 15, 45 and 90 days. “We are planning to enrol at least 400 women from Mumbai. These women will be reached by 13 students from the Bright Start Fellowship International School at Grant

This new measure by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has been initiated in order to decrease the number of deaths on the roads. All new transport vehicles sporting yellow number plates, which are used only on commercial vehicles, will be fitted with speed controlling devices having preset maximum speed limit of 80 km per hour. Death Certificate Delays BMC's 'C' Ward Counter clerks delay issue of death certificate up to months, citing absence of staff, computer not working, printer not working, etc. But a bribe gets it for you in 4 days told to inquire after one month. When asked why the delay, the answer was that the computer operator was on a month's leave and certificate issuing was pending from December 2013. However, subtle hints were given that there were ways to get their seniors to issue it quickly for some money. A senior ADC journalist, who was witness to it, and identified

himself, asked as to ' how come if one staffer is absent, does it stop the entire ward's work' and the reply was, 'OK, you will get it in fifteen days.' However, on March 25th , when the family members went to collect it, the answer was, “Come after one week. Computer not working. ” On Saturday, a senior ADC reporter accompanied the family. Again they did not get it as

this time the “C' ward's printer was not working. Instead, they were told that it was ready on the computer, and they go could go to either the 'A' or 'D' ward to obtain copies of the death certificate. Despite repeated attempts the Assistant Municipal Commissioner Sangeeta Hansare, of 'C' Ward, was not available for comment.

All commercial vehicles manufactured from tomorrow onwards will have speed number of road accidents after Andhra Pradesh. Regional Transport officials who are happy with this notification by MoRTH, say, “The speed-controlling gadget will be helpful in decreasing the number of accidents as well as their severity. The speed governor will also restrict fuel supply to the engine, while controlling the speed of the vehicle. However, a few type of old vehicles will be exempted from this measure.” Transport Commissioner VN More said, “It is the responsibility of the manufacturing companies to install 'speed governors' in all vehicles after April 1, 2014, as per Government of India notification. Each company has to certify that the vehicle has a limit of 80kmph. However, those vehicles already with the dealers or in the factory premises on this date are exempted from this rule.”

Historians, academics, intellectuals and activists including Anil Dharker and Alyque Padamsee denounce Gujarat govt and police for case alleging embezzlement of funds against the activists By Philip Varghese

F

ive days after the Bombay High Court reserved its order in a case where social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand sought quashing of an FIR filed against them for the alleged embezzlement of funds meant to convert Gulbarg Society into “Museum of Resistance” after the 2002 Gujarat riots. Several personalities including Iftikhar M. Kadri, Cyrus Guzder, theatre personality Alyque Padamsee, writer Anil Dharker among 90 prominent historians, academics, intellectuals and activists have come in support of Setalvad and Anand denouncing the acts of the Gujarat government. According to a statement by the organisation Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), “We are registered with the Charity Commissioner, Mumbai and has for over a decade been exempted from income tax and permitted by the Home Ministry to accept donations under the Foreign contributions Regulation Act. As audited by a reputable firm of chartered accountants, CJP has continuously complied with the requirements of all these agencies and all decisions on activities and expenses are taken with the full knowledge and sanction of its 12-member board of trustees. At no point did we received any funds, either by way of foreign contributions or donating from within India, for the 'Memorial of Resistance' at Gulberg Society, Ahmedabad proposed by the Sabrang Trust. Though it was supportive of the proposal, we received no funds for the same. The allegation that CJP received "huge funds" for the proposed Memorial is totally baseless and is emphatically denied. Teesta Setalvad, Secretary, CJP, is effectively the chief functionary

Teesta Setalvad of the organisation. Apart from detailed reports at Board meetings, she and Javed Anand have kept all Board members regularly updated on progress of activities through emails, text messages and telephonic communication. From 2002, when CJP was founded, until December 2009 Setalvad neither asked for nor was paid any amount of money by way of fee or salary. Since January 2010, when CJP began receiving support from the United Nations Voluntary Fund for victims of Torture (UNVFVT), Setalvad was paid modest remuneration in accordance with the terms of the UNVFVT

Given a free hand, many in the Congress believe that Chavan, who kept quiet after quitting the CM's post, could be a valuable asset for the party in the Lok Sabha and the forthcoming state Assembly elections. Considering the precarious political situation in the state, the Congress included Chavan's name in the sixth list of candidates. In the meanwhile, the BJP has fielded former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa. Various corruption charges against Yeddyurappa had caused a huge embarrassment for the BJP across India and the party is now opposing the candidature of Chavan. However, the Congress leadership strongly supported Chavan without succumbing to any pressure. This has also sent out a strong message to Chavan's detractors within the Congress.

Legal Aid to victim-survivors of the 2002 communal carnage in Gujarat is but one indicator of the national and international recognition of CJP's sustained legal interventions to ensure justice and the rule of law. Successes have included the convictions in the Best Bakery case, and life sentences to 117 perpetrators of violence, including a former BJP MLA and Cabinet Minister of Gujarat. Setalvad has been recognised by a Padma Shri in India and the 'City of Nuremberg (Germany) award for Human Rights'. In public memory the city is associated with the 'Nuremberg Trials' following the defeat of the Nazi regime. Anand is a recipient of the Minorities Rights Award instituted by the National Commission for minorities and was named a Chevalier d'Honneur by the French government”, the statement said. He further added, “Teesta and Anand have been accused of "siphoning off" crores of funds received by CJP, and have filed affidavits in court refuting all the allegations as false and baseless. We must add that since CJP's inception, all payments are verified by a board member other than Teesta or Anand. The entire Board of Trustees of CJP affirms its full confidence in and stands fully behind Teesta and Anand. Each of us is confident that this prosecution will fail and that Teesta and Anand will stand vindicated.” Meanwhile, SAHMAT - Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust, based in Delhi has written a letter along with 90 prominent historians, academics, intellectuals and activists, which stated, “We are shocked and outraged by the continuing attempt of the Gujurat govern-

ment and the Gujarat police to somehow implicate activists Teesta and Anand, along with three victim-survivors of the state-sponsored Gujarat carnage in 2002 on patently trumped-up charges. This is nothing but a desperate bid to delay or derail the justice process, in particular Zakia Jafri’s appeal which is now before the Gujarat High Court. Mrs. Jafri has accused Gujarat chief minister and home minister, Narendra Modi along with 59 other top politicians, police officers and civil servants of conspiracy for mass murder and other serious criminal offences. It is significant that the Supreme Court appointed amicus curiae in the case, Mr. Raju Ramachandran, has told the apex court there was enough prima facie evidence to prosecute Modi. Teesta and Anand are being especially targeted as they are among the founder members of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) and have been at the forefront of the struggle for justice for the victim-survivors of the Gujarat pogrom. Equally condemnable is the hounding in the same alleged “cheating” case, of three office bearers of Gulberg Housing Society, Ahmedabad, each of whom lost several family members when police watched as frenzied mobs attacked their colony on February 27, 2002. Among them is Tanvir Jafri whose father and former Congress MP, Ehsan Jafri was mercilessly butchered along with 68 others. As citizens committed to the Rule of Law, we denounce the vengeful action of the Modi government and the Gujarat police, and demand immediate withdrawal of the motivated and baseless FIR against Teesta Setalvad, Javed Anand, Tanvir Jafri and the office-bearers of the Gulberg Society.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

Modi lambasts Rahul over poll ticket to Ashok Chavan By A Special Correspondent

T

he BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi yesterday criticized Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for giving ticket to former chief minister Ashok Chavan and accused NCP chief Sharad Pawar of failing to stop farmers’ suicides in the state. Addressing an election rally in Nanded, Modi slammed the Congress for stating that no law stops Chavan from contesting polls. “Though Shahzada (Rahul) has said he won’t compromise with corruption and action will taken in the case, Chavan was given the ticket. For Congress giving ticket is taking action. What Adarsh candidates they have,” he said with ref-

about a building in Mumbai or giving flats to in-laws. No one will be spared when the new government assumes power after May 16,” Modi added further. “The Agriculture Minister is from Maharashtra yet he is unable to save farmers. He Narendra Modi has time to talk on cricket but not for dying farmers. Let us have a NCP free India and Maharashtra,” Modi pointed out. Flaying the local body tax, he said, “LBT is nothing but 'Looto Baato Tax'. This tax is ruining the farmers of the state”. “Like in Vidarbha there are Rahul Gandhi cotton growers in Gujarat and his state, too, had to face erence to the Adarsh society drought. But, farmers in Guscam in which the former jarat did not think of ending CM’s name had cropped up. their lives. In Vidarbha cot“Can anyone think of a ton production is 280 kg per scam over widows of heroes hectare, while in Gujarat it is who died in Kargil? It's not 630 kg,” he pointed out.

Slippery Tongues SIMHASAN Prashant Hamine | ADC Sharad Pawar and H.S. Bramha

C

ome poll season, our politicians who are otherwise tongue-tied on development suddenly come into their own. Development takes a backseat and emotive issues that lure voters into voting them back to power take centre stage. So when the stakes are so high, the obvious slip shows. This week it was not just the politicians but even the venerable Election Commissioner, H.S. Bramha could not resist the temptation of taking the media on. What many forget is that politicians, if they are well known leadres at that, can literally get away with anything with the poll body ultimately showing that it too has feet

of clay or is rather very weak in the knees. NCP chief Sharad Pawar has been known for his astute political acumen and it was a rare occasion to find him too lowering his guard. Not known to lower his guard, he did gave it away as he in jest asked Mathadi workers to vote twice. Be it Varun Gandhi’s hate speech of 2009 elections or slip of tongue of Gopinath Munde on poll expenses just recently, the poll body has always been found wanting when it was expected to act tough against high profile politicians. Most of the Election Commission of India (ECI) is drawn from the state and

central cadres. Although they are guaranteed immunity for their actions while on poll duty, after poll duty they have to once again become answerable to the very same politicians they act against during polls. So it is little wonder that the ECI, during polls, had to ask the officers to ensure level playing field is created. Although Bramha intended to harp on A.R. Antulay and Anant Gite the level playing field aspect, by branding Mumbai BJP, the resentment at being as the capital of paid news sidelined or overlooked in the ticket and seat sharing has skewed the picture. talks has hurt many an old guard across party lines. For Antulay, his Raigad bastion The conta0gious disease of being handed over on a platpolitical dissentions has well ter to the NCP, that too to his and truly afflicted one and bitter rival Sunil Tatkare was all in this poll season. Be it bit too much to digest. Havsenior Congressman A.R. ing remained a loyal foot solAntulay or Girish Bapat in dier since the formation of

Dissent

NCP, it was hard for Sanjay Khodke to digest the fact that the party was giving ticket to Navneet Kaur Rana, wife of MLA Ravi Rana who defeated Khodke’s wife in 2009 assembly elections. Although Khodke has not taken the extreme step like party MLC Vinayak Mete, to hobnob with the opponents, Khodke’s open defiance against party nominee is bound to affect the poll outcome. Mete’s entry into

the BJP-Shiv Sena led grand Mahayuti alliance has given rise to voices of dissent within the rank and file of the alliance partners. More the partners in sharing the pie, more the squabbles and infighting, that seems to be the reason for opposition within the Mahayuti to Mete’s entry. The Sena has already seen quite a few de-

05 sertions in its ranks and the latest salvo fired has been from its senior party MLC Ramdas Kadam who does not see eye-to-eye with party MP Anant Gite from Raigad. By fielding Anil Shirole from Pune, the BJP has left its senior MLA Girish Bapat sulking. Though he has not raised a banner of revolt, his absence from the poll scene tells it all. In Pune all the political parties have fielded Maratha community candidates which has angered the sizeable Brahmin community which met over the weekend to explore the option of using NOTA to register their protest at being given a raw deal in the political process. Unfortunately NOTA has now become a threat tool. Former close aide of Gopinath Munde, Lok Sangram MLA from Dhule, Anil Gote too has threatened to use the NOTA option asking his Dhangar (Sheperd) community to use it to register their protest to what he calls being given an insulting treatment by the BJP leader. The Supreme Court of India and the Election Commission of India would never have imagined that their idea of introducing the NOTA option in EVMs will be used in such a manner.

JP leader Piyush Goyal yesterday said no farmer committed suicide in Gujarat during 2010-12 in comparison with Congress-ruled Maharashtra where the number of such incidents was highest in this period. "Central government has noted that no farmer has committed suicide in Gujarat between 2010-12 when Maharashtra had highest number of farmers suicides during this period. Similarly, there was lesser unemployment in Gujarat and growth rate in agriculture, industry and service sector was higher than the national average," said Goyal, who is a Rajya Sabha MP and also the party treasurer. He said economy was in "dire straits" because of policies of the UPA government. "Economy is in doldrums because of lack of decision making and corruption under the watch of UPA," Goyal

NDA wave will soon turn into 'saffron storm': Uddhav S

hiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray yesterday said Congress is in a bad shape due to lack of formidable leadership and claimed that "saffron resurgence" is on the cards with Narendra Modi being a credible alternative. "The wave in favour of BJPled NDA across the country will be soon be converted into a saffron storm," Uddhav said in an interview in yesterday's edition of Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana'. "Except for Atal Behari Vajpayee, Opposition had no face. While there were Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv

Gandhi...Congress is unable to bring Rahul Gandhi before the people and same is the case with Priyanka Vadra," he said.

"For the first time Congress is in a bad shape as they don't have a face, while the Opposition parties have consolidated and united themselves behind (BJP's prime ministerial nominee) Modi," he said. To a question on whether 'India Shining' will be repeated (defeat after much hype) this time, Uddhav said, "Forget that, because of Modi, there will be 'India shining' in real terms. Opposition parties had succeeded in rubbishing the India shining campaign run by the NDA that time." Admitting that the Lok

Sabha election is the first major challenge for his party after the death of his father Bal Thackeray, Uddhav said he always feels the presence of Sena supremo around him. To another question about several leaders quitting the party, the Sena leader said the cadres have not left. "Few have left because they were denied tickets," he claimed. Referring to the conviction of party leader Babanrao Gholap in disproportionate assets case, he expressed surprise that the verdict came after 14 years and that too at the time of the elections.

HC upholds life sentence to woman for killing husband T

he Bombay High Court has upheld a life sentence awarded to a 27-year-old woman for murdering her husband after two months of marriage, while accepting the extra-judicial confession made by her to the victim's brother that she had committed the offence. A division bench of Justices V.K. Tahilramani and V.L. Achliya upheld the conviction and life sentence of Jyoti Malusare for murdering her husband Vijay on June 15, 2007. Jyoti and Vijay had married on May 9, 2007. Jyoti was in a relationship with another person Jeevan Waragade before marriage. According to the prosecution, Jyoti and Jeevan hatched conspiracy to murder Vijay and on the night of June 14, 2007. She poisoned her husband's milk and then strangulated him to death when he was asleep. The next day morning, Vijay's brother Abhay, who lived in an adjacent room, failed to get response from

him when he tried to wake him up. Abhay, with the help of neighbours, rushed the victim to a hospital where he was declared dead. Abhay later made enquiries with Jyoti as to what had happened the previous night. According to prosecution, Jyoti confessed to poisoning her husband and then strangulating him to death with a towel. Abhay lodged an FIR against Jyoti and she was arrested the same day. While trial was conducted against both Jyoti and Jeevan, the Sessions court acquitted Jeevan due to lack of evidence. Jyoti was convicted for murder and awarded life sentence. "If we consider the prosecution case and evidence adduced, then it is clear that there are no eyewitnesses to the incident. The entire case of the prosecution is based on the extra-judicial confession made by the accused Jyoti to the victim's brother Abhay and circumstantial evidence," the HC noted while hearing Jyoti's appeal against conviction.

The Court held that the prosecution managed to duly corroborate the extra-judicial confession with circumstantial evidence. "We are of the view that Abhay's testimony inspires full confidence and is found to be truthful. So also, the extra-judicial confession made by the accused to him

is found to be voluntary and does not suffer from any material discrepancies. Therefore, the extra-judicial confession made by accused to Abhay can be accepted as admissible piece of evidence to form the basis to uphold the conviction of the appellant," the court said.

hen the Vakola police took custody of a chain-snatcher recently arrested by the Kherwadi police, they realised that he was one of the pair of chainsnatchers who were the first to have been charged in 2013 under the Maharastra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) since its implementation. The accused, identified as Aalam Aadam Mansuri (22), resident of Naupada in Bandra (E), was first caught red handed last year by the Mahim Police. On the day of incident he snatched gold worth over Rs.60,000 in a very busy Kherwadi Market along with his colleague 'Bada Sajid'. Mansuri fell off the bike during the snatching and failed to flee from the spot. After the locals took him to the police station, he revealed

They were identified as Rameshbhai Godhani, Hiren Kumar Gohik, Jignesh Ukani and Navinchand Patel who were caught with crude gold 'kadas' weighing one kilogram each worth Rs.1.09 crore. “The gold was hidden beneath the sleeves of their

shirts,” said an officer. The quartet was arrested for smuggling under relevant sections of the Customs Act. In the drug smuggling case, Malawi national Chikaya Francis was held with 20 kg of Ephedrine worth Rs.20 lakh that was hidden inside the false bottom of his suitcase. “He was showing symptoms of nervousness, was tense and trying to rush through the checking queue when we asked him to step aside. The sniffer dog was also called

who gave a positive signal after smelling his bag,” said additional commissioner (AIU) Milind Lanjewar. The accused has confessed to carrying the drugs and officers are now tying to find out who handed him the contraband. “Since Ephedrine is not that dangerous a narcotic, he would get bail soon,” Lanjewar added. The accused was charged under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

ewri Jetty saw an influx of enthusiastic and excited onlookers especially children and their parents who travelled from different parts of the city on Saturday to catch a glimpse of the beautiful flamingos (an estimated 20,000 this year) thanks to Bombay Natural History Society’s ‘Flamingo Festival’ which was organised in association with Mumbai Port Trust. The blue skies, green mangrove belt, industrial stretch, the water and mudflats and of course the beautiful flamingos and other water birds foraging for food made for a pretty picture indeed on this lazy Saturday. While people of all ages stood captivated with binoculars in the hot sun to observe these migratory birds, a number of stalls behind had multiple activities dedicated to the flamingo taking place in the backdrop. The huge turnout of visiting people was a clear indication that the flamingo is popular among Mumbaikar’s especially children. The visiting flamingos included the Lesser Flamingo and Greater Flamingo, both of which breed in Gujarat. All flamingos are found in tropical and subtropical areas, with a sizeable portion of Lesser Flamingos nesting in India. The

Flocks of flamingos can be seen cavorting around and feeding in the Sewri mudflats, mangroves and in the placid waters.

Greater Flamingos on the other hand are found in Northwest India. The favourite sites for both these types of flamingos in India is Kutchch, Mumbai, Bhigwan in Pune, Mayani lake near Satara, Point Calimere, Pulicat, Chilika and Sambhar lake. We reiterate that the proposed Mumbai Trans Harbour Link should be realigned by about 500 metres to the south at the Sewri end to save the flamingo habitat.” Last year an estimated 15,000 flamingos were spotted and this year around 20, 000 indicating that there has been no drop in numbers among the visiting birds.

The latest move by the poll panel comes after it put up posters urging voters to select pro-development candidates and dump the criminals and the corrupt. The Election Commission's 'plea' asking people to vote ethically in the coming Lok Sabha elections is in the form of a letter written in Marathi for Maharashtra's voters and in different regional languages for people from other linguistic

groups. The letter asks voters to elect a candidate who will 'meet the aspirations of the people and the nation as a whole.' It asks voters to cast their ballots 'without fail, fear or greed, and without keeping caste, religion and creed considerations in mind' and to 'inspire and encourage friends and family members' to vote in this fashion. The letter also states that electing a candidate is not merely a citizen's right but their responsibility towards the nation. Of the eight lakh such letters being distributed by the poll panel, around three lakh would reach the electors with voters' slips in the city and around five lakh in the suburbs. An official said people would be asked to sign and submit these to ward officers or election officials.

The Carnac Bridge was built in 1866-67 (opened in 1868) through the joint expense of the great Indian peninsular railway (now CR) and the Bombay municipality. The overbridge between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and Masjid Bunder station connects P.D'mello road to Carnac bunder. The Hancock Bridge was built by the British in 1908 and was rebuilt in 1923 connecting Masjid Bunder station to Byculla.

The Carnac Bridge Bridge were declared dangerous a year ago. The traffic police had warned the Central Railways (CR) that a Britishera structure in Mazgaon, the Hancock overbridge, was in a precarious state and could crash anytime and may lead to casualties. But both the BMC and the Central Railways were passing the buck. A BMC official said that the BMC wanted the railways to chip in for the portion of the bridges above the railway tracks as they had been built by the British. This dispute between

The ROB in Chembur that connects Amar Mahal Junction from the west and Fine Arts Auditorium in the east, also connects to the Chembur railway station skywalk and the newly inaugurated Mono Rail station there. This ROB therefore sees heavy footfalls of pedestrians, and the authorities have put up iron railings as barricades dividing pedestrian footpath and the road for safe pedestrian movement. Says advocate Vijay Amin from Munjal Nagar, “I have been seeing this theft increasing. I use the same route to reach Chembur railway station. Even though the authorities have put up the railings recently on either side, there is not enough security to prevent criminal elements from stealing the iron barricades. It seems that the erecting of iron railings and miscreants stealing it is a free for all situation as only the beneficiaries are contractors and alleged miscreants. The Exchequers money is wasted and the concerned department seems oblivious to these thefts.” The ADC contacted the various concerned authorities, but every official kept passing the buck saying that the ROB area does not come under their jurisdiction. Local councilor Suprada Phaterphekar (ward No.146) said that the flyover stretch does not come under the ward office. The Executive Engineer of MMRDA, Jamadar, said, “I don’t think that this Chembur rail over bridge comes under MMRDA.” Conversely, an assistant engineer of the PWD, who chose to remain anonymous, said that the stretch comes under the MMRDA.

Ensure smooth poll W

ITH just a week for the beginning of the Lok Sabha elections, there is chance of violence breaking out in some constituencies. Strong, provocative words are being used by leaders of parties and also certain individuals. A sample of a violent remark: “Chop Modi into pieces”. Such declarations can definitely spoil the peaceful atmosphere of the poll. There have been attacks on party headquarters and residences of leaders. The police have risen up to the occasion and ensured security. What is a matter for concern is not so much political rivalry, but personal hatred. For instance, there are strong personal feelings between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and BJP's PM nominee and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi. It is a well known fact that Nitish Kumar cannot stand the sight of Narendra Modi. He has been a strong critic – personal critic – of Modi. Another area where violence can break out is some sensitive areas like Varanasi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal who is contesting the seat against Modi has taken violent elements to Varanasi for participating in the poll. Arvind Kejriwal has a special way of conducting campaign which can result in skirmishes. Varanasi is not Delhi: The BJP has chosen Narendra Modi for contesting from Varanasi for a definite reason. It can be expected Modi's party will make all possible arrangements to ensure that the rivals will not be able to spoil the event. It is with a definite purpose that the election commission has carefully made special arrangements for carrying out the elections. It is possible that thanks to all possible precautions taken by the EC, elections will be completely conducted smoothly. And of course, the country's permanent anti-social elements have their own programme to disturb elections. The experiment in the democratic process has been conducted quite fairly and peacefully all these years. But this year, there are some special undesirable developments for which we have to be prepared.

“T

HE recent and recurring outbursts of sudden and cruel violence against Muslim citizens… are a matter of the gravest anxiety for every thinking Indian.” Who said that and when? Well, not a wellfunded NGO entrepreneur running an allcosts-paid enterprise on donations by respectable and not-so-respectable entities. Nor, for that matter, a run-of-the-mill politician trying to burnish his secularist image by exploiting the misery of victims of communal strife. Of course, it is not Digvijay Singh, the quote-a-minute general secretary of the Congress Party. As for the timing of that anguished remark, it is certainly not about the 2002 Gujarat riots. (Sorry to disappoint you, the secularist brigade!) Not even about the Bhagalpur riots. Or the recent Muzzaffarnagar riots. No, not even about the Bhiwandi, Malliana or Nellie massacres. Well, the person who was deeply concerned about the communal riots has much better credentials than any living politician and, therefore, his words should carry some weight. His name is Jaya Prakash Narayanan. And this is a quote from March 1964. Yes, March 1964. Jawaharlal Nehru was the prime minister at the time. And the widely-respected Sarvodaya leader was moved to tears by the Muslim-Hindu riots that had broken out in Calcutta that March. Last Sunday, while going through the recently introduced column, This Week That Era in the large-selling The Hindustan Times, one’s eye was fixed on JP’s statement made sometime between March 23 and 29, 1964. Curiosity thus aroused, one googled to find out the immediate reason for JP’s distress. Soon one was reading the Online Encyclopedia of Mass Violence — Chronological Index of Hindu-Muslim Riots in India ( 1947- 86) Those obsessed with the 2002 Gujarat riots will profit immensely from looking at this website. It might help them rid themselves of their ingrained or acquired prejudice against the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. The history of free India is littered with communal strife. Nehru, the greatest of Congress leaders whose secularist credentials were above reproach, found it hard to contain the periodic violent outpourings of the baggage of the pre- and post-Partition India. The above encyclopedia lists three partic-

ular riots in 1964: Calcutta in West Bengal; Jamshedpur in Bihar; and Rourkela in Orissa. According to it, 78 per cent of those who died in Calcutta were Hindu, 20 per cent Muslim, while in Jamshedpur and Rourkela the comparative figures were 81 per cent and nine per cent and 84 per cent and nine per cent. Also, the Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, namely, P.C. Sen, K.B. Sahay and Biren Mitra, all three leaders in their own right, were not dummies who owed their posts to the Congress coterie in Delhi. “In all, while official records estimate the violence in three towns claimed 134, the actual death toll actually came to several thou-

E Indians believe the worst of our politicians. Politics everywhere is dirty. And should you think dynasties dominate only our politics, consider the number of hereditary politicians in Britain. According to a London-based columnist, “there are three married couples in the House of Commons, three sets of siblings, including the first twins to sit together, and no fewer than 21 MPs whose parents previously served in the House…” And this does not include the number of MPs whose ancestors were MPs. Mind you, we are talking here about the mother of parliaments. So, do not be harsh on yourselves for tolerating political dynasties. They prosper everywhere in the free world.

It turns out around the same time the Congress Party too had duly admitted the Sri Ram Sene activist, Dinkar Shetty. This gentleman claims to have personally carried out the infamous attack on the Mangalore pub in 2009. However, once the Muthalik entry attracted media ire, and the BJP de-admitted him within five hours, the Congress was left with no choice but to follow the BJP lead. Indian cricket lying low THE Supreme Court deserves kudos for replacing cricket Board President N. Srinivasan with Gavaskar as the Little Master has been given the initial charge for the IPL as an interim arrangement. IPL is interesting and a crowd puller but the matches most probably are doctored to enthuse the crowds and even the Supreme Court of our land finds the tournament fishy as top teams who have won the tournament in the past have been found indulging in suspicious activities. If cricket has to be cleansed of illegality and other dubious activities, the Supreme Court should have scraped the tour in totality and found ways to come up with a better and clean tournament next year. Perhaps the SC allowed the tournament to go ahead because of the huge money involved and for the fact that so much was at stake both for the players and the franchises.

The SC under Sunil Gavaskar's watchful eyes should monitor the IPL from an microscopic lens and also come out with a long-term plan for the Cricket Board where former cricketers run the show at BCCI. — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

IN the light of the ongoing controversy in the field of cricket, I came across a quote in a newspaper. This can be termed as the joke of the century in the field of the game's administration. The gentleman in question calls the legend, Sunil Gavaskar an 'outsider' in the domain of Indian cricket. The utterer seems to be insinuating that the Little Master is "not keeping" in touch with the latest developments in the modern day Indian cricket; because perhaps, he happened to have taken his gloves off nearly a quarter century ago. — Vineet Phadtare, Borivli

As Sreesanth was a senior member of RR, Rahul Dravid, the then skipper could have had the inside information regarding the bowler's act on and off the field. But in these 24 years, more than 12 states in the country began staggering under Maoism and more farmers than before began committing suicide. The question now is whether there is any way out of all this? There have been ways out at every turn. It is a different matter that no one could show the courage to walk along any of the ways out. In particular in the last two-three years, a new phase of a new political consciousness was born in the

Narendra Modi country. New things about new methods are being discussed, new arguments are taking birth every day. What is good, what is bad, that is ultimately for the people to decide, but the most important thing is that there should be a debate on new thinking, new subjects and issues, new ideas and alternative economic policy. When Anna Hazare sent his 17-point programme to all the political parties, no political party considered it necessary to respond except Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal who believes that for ending corruption neither is it necessary to be an eminent economist nor is it necessary to have knowledge of economics. For ending corruption it is essential to bring in transparency at every level. In policy decisions too, people

should have the right to know why a certain decision is being taken. The village should be made the chief administrative unit and the Gram Sabha should be given more rights and powers. In every village, an independent and self-sustained rural economic scheme should be implemented. For the benefit of farmers, changes should be brought in the land acquisition law so that no one can snatch their land away from them. A ban should be implemented on the privatisation of minerals so that that no private company can loot the resources of the country. For access of all villages to better health services, broader changes should be brought about in health services. A new policy of education should be implemented and education should be linked to employment. Now who can refuse such benefits from such programmes? But look at this country’s misfortune – only Mamata Banerjee publicly declared that she will apply such policies. Can Mamata Banerjee become the Prime Minister? Let us take a brief look at what work Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has done in her state in the last three years. When Mamata Banerjee uprooted 34 years of Leftist rule in West Bengal and became Chief Minister, she ‘inherited’ a state which had been virtually looted. To do away with the debt burden and bring the state on track, within six months of becoming the Chief Minister, Banerjee had brought in investments of Rs.56,000 crore and two and a half lakh employment opportunities. Today the problems of Naxalite-affected Jungle Mahal are not the same as they were three years ago. The ultimate decision has to be made by the people and let's hope that the people will not make this decision in haste, in a rush of passion, because this time people are not optionless.

Muslims must seek clarity from political parties time is the Muslims of the country. Traditionally, in the minds of Muslims there is the feeling that Narendra Modi or the BJP are enemies of the Muslims. But this time the BJP has got underway a campaign to win over the Muslims. It has attempted to tempt a section of Muslim leaders and in that effort several Muslim leaders can be seen moving closer Santosh Bhartiya to Modi. They have promised to support Narendra Modi, including Y making Narendra Modi the Mahmood Madani and Yusuf KaPrime Ministerial candidate, chochwi. On the other hand, in the BJP, positive changes were seen. The old face which tried to win by creating polarisation between the Muslims and the Hindus in the days of the Jan Sangh is now sitting with a scheme to set up a dialogue with the Muslims with a new face and a new language. Right at the outset, senior Urdu journalist and former Rajya Sabha MP Shahid Siddiqui took an interview of Modi and Muslims believed that he was a Modi supporter amongst them. The Samajwadi Party disowned him. That same Muslim society now seems to be moving forward towards accepting Narendra Modi. The question is whether politics and the distance should increase so much that a dialogue cannot be

held. Muslim society should take its questions and hold a dialogue with all the political parties in the country. Included in this are the BJP and its Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. In India, all the economically weaker sections are having to struggle to improve their position. It is a matter of sorrow that amongst the Muslims there have been so many divisions politically that their strength seems to be lessening to a considerable extent. If you look at the number of major Muslim political parties, no one votes for them. Perhaps in the interests of Muslims, the declaration of the formation of these parties is correct, but these political parties are not being able to explain the issues of Muslims to non-Muslims, and because till the time nonMuslims do not vote for Muslims, until then the strength of the Muslims will appear to be weakening in a political form.

Caught in red tape

HE Finance Ministry’s procrastination over top appointments in financial regulators probably means that the decision may now happen after elections by a new government. Filling senior positions in the Reserve Bank of India, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PRFDA), and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has been inexplicably delayed despite the fact that the interview process concluded several months ago. The PFRDA requires a chairman and three members and is clearly the worst-hit due to the government’s indecision. Sources say that interviews for the post of chairman were conducted a couple of months ago and the name that emerged as the frontrunner is Hemant Contractor, one of the managing directors of State Bank of India. Interestingly, after his retirement next month, his position at SBI would become vacant. Retired Finance Secretary R.S. Gujral is another contender. S. Roy Chowdhury retired recently as Member-Life from IRDA and no one has been appointed to succeed him.

T

Government's dilemma

HE Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) is in a fix. The Kiran Aggarwal Committee, which was set up to review the content and duration of the induction training of IAS officers has suggested its report. The panel has recommended reducing the total training period of IAS officers from two years to one-and-a-half years. However, some have reservations about the proposal, notably Padamvir Singh, Director of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. However, the panel made this proposal after consultations with recent batches of IAS officers who want district training duration to be reduced from the present 54 weeks to 33 weeks. They believe that the long duration of training reduces the potential years in service for officers without any significant improvement in effectiveness. The panel’s recommendation is also being welcomed by state governments.

Transfers revoked

NDHRA Pradesh’s politics continues to simmer after the creation of Telangana state. Among other things, it led to the exit of Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy who has now floated his own party. Reddy’s exit has also ensured other changes in the state administration, which is now under Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan’s direct charge. One is the reversal of transfers of two former Special Secretaries of ex-CM Kiran Reddy. He had named K.S. Jawahar Reddy, a 1990batch IAS officer as Secretary for Irrigation. Similarly, 1997-batch IAS officer N. Sridhar was transferred from the State Beverages Corporation to the State Education Department as Secretary. Both virtually last-minute transfers have now been reversed under the President’s rule. — Dilip Cherian

From mobile phones to rentals, from no Service Tax to no VAT. These are some of the many freebies that developers are offering to end users; that is buyers from the middle class segment of society this Gudi Padwa. Whether the freebies will translate into actual sales in the newly launched projects by developers during the ongoing slump is a question which has no definite answer, but a few hopeful voices believe that the middle class buyers of Mumbai and Maharashtra will take advantage of the auspicious occasion, before the prices go northward as predicted by some post the elections. By Mayura Shanbaug

G

udi Padwa is expected to bring in positive sentiment into the property market, says Kruti Jain, Director, Kumar Urban Development (KUL). According to her “Now that the election result impact is discounted, stock markets crossed the 22000 mark, inflation is under control; Gudi Padwa is going to bring cheers hopefully,” says Jain. Jain further explains that they are hopeful that though people are awaiting elections and holding their buying decisions till a new government is formed, the market will improve on this auspicious day. “Already there is a huge pent up demand as sales have slowed

down. March though is generally a slow month, sales should jump at least 33% from the previous month and 20% from same day of the previous year,” adds a very optimistic Jain. Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra has its own importance and developers look forward to it, hoping that it will prove to be a turning point for the sector and hope to see increased home buying on this auspicious occasion. Many big developers including Rustomjee and Godrej have launched more than one project during this period. There are scores of small developers who have launched their projects in areas like Thane, Kalyan, Alibaug and Uran offering buyers attractive incentives to invest in their projects. Disha Direct has introduced special offers for their project MY HOME in Shahapur and Alibaug on the day of Padwa. “We have received a phenomenal response for this project ever since the launch. Within just a month’s time, MY HOME Alibaug has received 40 bookings and Shahapur has done 90 plus bookings,” says Santosh Naik, MD & CEO Disha Direct. “This is an auspicious time for homebuyers. We have thus introduced special offers on this project. We are confident buyers will

erally people are adopting a wait and watch approach, but fence sitters will take this festival and the many ongoing offers as an opportunity to fulfill their dream of buying their home,” he adds. Echoing similar sentiments Nikhil Bhatia, Head – Western Region, CBRE South Asia Pvt. Ltd. says that typically festive occasions do not create an urge for high net-worth individuals to buy property. “Their buying decision mainly depends on other factors like market conditions and investment opportunities, rather than on traditionally perceived auspicious occasions like Gudi Padwa for investment decisions,” says Bhatia. “Keeping in mind the local sentiments attached to this festival, meanwhile, developers offer home buyers attractive discounts and schemes,” he says. But like many other analysts even Bhatia is skeptical of the success of these schemes and whether there will be many takers as this is the end of the financial year and buyers will be settling their financial dues before they make fresh purchases. “I really do not see any signifitake maximum advantage of this mainly celebrated by the middle cant change taking place during opportunity. t’s not just a pre-election rally. Of course, the FII’s strongly believe that if the elections were to take place today the NDA would get 230+ seats. But they are not just banking on that. The Ukraine crisis has come as a blessing in disguise. Out of the BRICS countries, namely, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the Russian market has crashed due to the Ukraine crisis and, with more sanctions, which will play out over the long period as far as FII’s are concerned, Russian stock markets are untouchable. China is grappling with huge capacities and inventories of commodities and real estate. Shanghai once touted to be the showpiece of Chinese power has a huge number of beautiful skyscrapers with empty residential flats and offices. A news report in an international paper recently published carried a story that the new Chinese government is desperately trying to sell these flats to the rich Hong Kong millionaires at 20 to 30% discount. The new Chinese leadership is fighting corruption and discontent amongst its own 1.3 billion population, because of the sharp drop in growth from 11% to less than 7.5% expected this year. This was manifested by recent killings of 30 Chinese at a crowded railways station by unidentified marked Chinese, who have still not be traced. Brazil too is facing problems of rapid slowdown and social unrest. The new favorites of FII’s are India, Indonesia and South Africa and India being the much larger economy, therefore, with both domestic and export potential is FII’s favorite. Even in the a very unlikely event of a fractured mandate, come May 16 there will be knee jerk 10% drop in Indian stock markets, but they will recover soon because the macros have improved tremendously and RBI led by Dr. Rajan is playing a key role. His greatest achievement is that he has kept the INR currency stable in the 60 to 62 range. On Wednesday, when INR appreciated to 60.14 close to the Rs.60 mark to the dollar, RBI bought 1 billion dollars from the open market. Neither the RBI nor the FII’s want the rupee to fall below 60 to 62 range because this makes India exports very competitive at a time when Chinese exports have weakened considerably. And RBI buying dollars from open market gives it firepower in case of an unexpected geopolitical event. Another factor that FII’s like is that 4 lakh crore worth of domestic infrastructure projects which had been stuck because of the UPA’s policy paralysis, have been cleared in the last six months. This will surely increase domestic growth because most of these projects are almost complete and the last mile connectivity remains which can be quickly done by a new government. What’s more, there are another 16 lakh crore projects which can be fast tracked easily. Like all central bankers around the world, Dr. Raghuram Rajan will play a key role, whichever government comes to power, Dr. Rajan has a tendency to surprise the stock markets. With core CPI at 8.1%, most bankers and Foreign analysts expect him to hold interest rates. But there is a 25% chance that he might lower rates - by that he might again surprise markets by actually lowering the repo rate by 25 basis points from 8.25 to 8%. This is because a 25 basis points hardly makes a difference and he can still claim that 8% is high enough to fight inflation. Moreover, his core CPI target to begin lowering rates was 8% by March 2015. It is already close to that and food prices are still gradually trending downwards. Therefore there is aggressive buying in cyclicals, especially private banks. The next policy review is on April 1. One can still buy the likes of ICICI, Axis, HDFC and amongst the midcaps Yes Bank, Indusind bank. Though many have run up quite a bit, there is still trading upside in many of these. At the same time one should start nibbling at the defensive export oriented large caps like pharma and IT. My bets would be on Lupin, Sun Pharma, HCL Tech, TCS and Tech Mahindra because as the US dollar strengthens the INR will eventually come back to 62 which is what Rajan and the new government may want, to encourage exports. The fact that textile exporter Arvind, a large textile exporter, has picked up a 50% stake in Calvin Klein Jeans of USA clearly indicates this. Amongst other midcaps are the likes of Cox & Kings, Delta Corp and Fed Bank. All in all, continue buying on dips and keep 20% in cash in the unlikely scenario of a fractured mandate.

here are many products and services which are launched on a regular basis in India. Very few actually succeed. We have come to the conclusion that one of the common threats in the success of some of these brands is the practice of segmentation. Segmentation is a process wherein the set of consumers who seek the same or similar offerings are clubbed together. Thus, instead of appealing to everyone in the population, a much focused approach is taken by sensible marketers who choose a set of consumers with specific needs and desires and clarify that as a market segment they would like to cater to. Those within the segment are more similar in their market wants, than are those in the total population at large. While there will always remain differences in wants even amongst those within a segment still focusing on a set of consumers with some kind of homogeneity would ensure greater probability of success. It is obviously understood that segments may change over a period of time. The benefits arising from segmenting the market are not always apparent to marketers, since they prefer to serve the total population. Yet, in our opinion, separate offerings from separate segments are usually both desirable and necessary. Hence, segmentation allows a company to exploit its thrust better by selecting like-minded market subsets. Thus, those who prefer going to an exclusive club with tremendous amount of privacy and the right profile of people would not be sensitive to price highs because their want categories are different. Secondly, segmentation allows sharply-focussed strategies and hence, is more cost-effective. In the case of durables, some TV brands seem to have used a very aggressive promotional route towards one segment of customers who desire to upgrade their quality of life but who could not afford TV sets. By using an affordability plan and throwing in free gifts as well as installments plans, some TV brands have penetrated the market very quickly and deeply. Their sharply focused strategy to bring about affordability to Indian consumers in the TV area has worked. Thirdly, the segmentation helps to develop customer loyalty as similar desires cluster people together and branded offerings to these personalities are far more acceptable in a likeminded environment. While segmentation is the route, the entire marketing strategy should be well thought out. It is important to first focus on deciding the bases for segmentation. This can be done through research as well as listening to and observing consumers. The greatest task of the marketers is to check up: A. What precisely are being grouped to form segments? B. What are the bases used for grouping in the segments? C. How are the bases for grouping into segments selected and what is the process? D. How should a firm select its segments? It is important to understand usage, attitude, preference as well as their life-style to be able to go about the segmentation exercise. There could be various bases apart from demographic and psychographic segmentation. We definitely recommend one specific form of segmentation which could be termed as benefit segmentation. Benefit segmentation is based on what people show or signal are the benefits they seek. It could be in the form of level of preferences while usage. If you have a clear segmentation strategy, there is a good chance that you would be able to have a relevant and effective positioning strategy. This is because you would be able to facilitate positioning of the brand relevant to like-minded people related to that particular segment. Copyright © 2013, All rights reserved. I am an NRI who recently joined with your reader’s forum, in search of a good family floater health policy. As an expert in health insurance, I would like to clarify the following points with you in general. Is it possible for an NRI to take a standalone health insurance plan from India? None of the proposal forms of public insurance companies are seeking this information whether the proposer is an NRI or not. In that case, how can an NRI proposer can mention his status? (Many banks are providing group insurance plans to their customers including NRIs. But I am asking about standalone family floater plans.) Of course, there will be a geographical limitation for NRIs for availing medical facility as they will have to come to India for treatment. Other than this limitation, are there any chances of denying a claim based on the residential status? My second question is for

one of my colleague. He has two health policies: one is an old group policy and the other one is individual. When a claim arises, how will be the expenses divided? Is there any change in (old) multiple claim settlement (rateable proportion) clauses? Hope you will spare few minutes for your valuable reply. — Meghna Puri, Mazgaon NRI's can apply for Stand Alone Health Plan but there has to be some valid reason as to why he needs to opt for that plan. Thus, if he mentions that he will take the plan for any medical emergencies only within the geographical limit of India, then he might as well opt for a Travel Insurance Plan and why does he need a Stand Alone Health Plan. This is done to stop medical tourism as a practise and using Insurance for the sole purpose of treatment alone. However, on pen and paper yes an NRI can apply for a standalone health plan provided: He has an Indian Address Proof, which states that he keeps coming to India to visit family, etc. He is in India on work deputation from his present employment Now, for your friend, he can apply for a claim from his Group Insurance Company and then apply for a reimbursement from his Individual or vice versa and the amount payable would be according to the Contribution Clause. To get further clarification you can read the

blog on the below link: http://blog.myinsuranceclub.com/pos t/2013/07/16/How-to-Claim-for-HealthInsurance-from-Multiple-Insurers.aspx However, Contribution Clause is not strictly applicable in most places now, thus you can apply for the full amount of claim till the limit and then take back the ORIGINAL PAPERS for claim processing from the second insurer.

I have New Jeevan Shree Policy no 151/25 of SA Rs. 500,000 (premium paying term is 16 years) I have paid premiums of Rs. 31570/- p.a. What will be the Value on Maturity. — Ravi Gupta, Sion As I understand, New Jeevan Shree Plan is a 16 years premium paying term with 25 years policy tenure. The Bonus Rates of New Jeevan Shree Plan is Rs 45 per thousand SA. Thus, for a policy for 25 years the Reversionary Bonus component would be Rs 45/1000 * 5,00,000 * 25= Rs 5,62,500 + Final Additional Bonus. Hence Maturity Benefit would be Sum Assured (Rs 5 lacs) + Reversionary Bonus (about Rs 5,62,500) + Final Additional Bonus. However, this is just an approximate calculation. If you want to know the exact valuation, then you need to contact LIC with your policy details and they would be able to provide details specific to your plan.

one lot. Friends who have looked this book over and have also read the previous three over the years, did admit to using the Internet for a sort of refresher course on the past books in the interests of re-establishing continuity. The book starts with Harry and Emma rushing to the hospital where Sebastian and Bruno have been brought in after a terrible car accident, which was actually an attempt on Sebastian's life by Bruno's father, Don Pedro Martinez, who is not aware that the boys are together. Martinez is the villain in this book too and goes about trying to destroy the Cliftons and the Barringtons. Emma is involved in Barrington Shipping and there is an attempt by Martinez to get Alex Fisher to destroy the firm just as it it going about with an ambitious plan to launch its transatlantic luxury liner. Virginia Fenwick too comes in to ruin the marriage plans of Jessica, the adopted daughter of Harry and Emma. he Sins of the Father by Jeffrey Archer is the second Clifton Chronicles book. The misgivings that Harry Clifton had in Only Time Will Tell, about who his real father was, now destroy his marriage while he and Emma Barrington are at the altar and Hugo Barrington stands up to announce that he is Harry’s father. O

nly Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer, is the first of five novels comprising the Clifton Chronicles, and revolves around the main protagonist, Harry Clifton. It spans the period from 1920 to the outbreak of the Second World War in 1940, covering the first twenty years of Clifton's life. Harry Clifton, struggling to stay alive in the backstreets of Bristol, has to cope with the tragedy of his father’s death during World War 1. The shock only

gets compounded when he learns that the man he always thought was his father and a war hero at that, wasn’t really his real father. To Harry, who has always believed since childhood that his father was killed in WW1, this revelation about not being the son of the man he knew as his Dad, comes as a truth he hates to face, but has still to delve under. The painful truth comes at a time when, after losing everything in the tragedy of the war, he was only starting to put his life together, piece by piece. World War II breaks out and Harry has to decide whether to continue with his studies at Oxford or enlist and fight against Nazi Germany. The uniqueness in this book is how Archer changes narration as the story progresses so readers can follow events from the perspective of key characters and one is let in on secrets which the other players in the book are not aware of. Archer is a brilliant storyteller, and this book is replete with his trademark wit and intelligence. Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer Price Rs.325

Emma’s brother and dear friend to Harry.Britain declares war on Germany, and Harry’s ship is sunk in the Atlantic by a German U-boat. Harry and an American officer on board the ship, Tom Bradshaw, are among the few survivors. When the officer dies, Harry assumes the identity of Tom Bradshaw, to unpredictably disastrous consequences as Tom is wanted for the murder of his brother, Bill Bradshaw. Harry, on landing in New York, is arrested for first degree murder. A crooked lawyer, Sefton Jelks, convinces him to plead guilty to a lesser charge of desertion. Harry gets six years in jail but continues to conceal his identity because of his love for Emma, and because accepting Tom’s identity would ensure that 10,000 dollars will be sent to his mother, Maisie, in England. Emma, gives birth to Harry’s child, learns Harry is still alive, and sets off for America. Giles goes off to war, gets glory and recognition for valour at Tobruk in Egypt. When Sir Walter dies, ever the corrupt villain, Hugo takes over the Barrington shipping enterprise, only to run it aground. The Sins of the Father by Jeffrey Archer Rs.350

B

est Kept Secret by Jeffrey Archer was the third Clifton Chronicles book, and the story matured into an engrossing page turner. Apart from ruining the marriage plans of Harry Clifton and Emma Barrington by announcing that Harry was his son, Emma’s father, Hugo Barrington also created a problem of inheritance between Harry and his friend, Giles Barrington, who by virtue of the announcement, has also become a brother.Harry and Emma disregard the slur of consanguinity. Harry is

now a well accepted thriller writer and Giles a Member of Parliament facing another round of campaigning. However, a rogue element, Major Alex Fisher, who has had run-ins with Harry as well as Giles, conspires Giles' ex-fiancee, Virginia, and with the help of a private eye of shifting loyalties and a trader based in Hong Kong, manipulates shares to get greater powers on the board of Barrington’s shipping companies. However, some clever manoeuvring sees Fisher outplayed and Virginia divested of her hold on Giles and the family.Harry and Emma's bonny boy, Sebastian, helping uncle Giles with his electioneering, detects a fraud being perpetrated by Fisher in the counting of votes, and ensures victory for his uncle. Sebastian has trouble in school for consorting with a serving maid and for smoking, endangering his chance for further education at Cambridge. He also has befriended Bruno Martinez, whose rich father has hobnobbed with the Nazis and is spreading counterfeit British currency around. Sebastian becomes an unwitting collaborator. There is also a sister/aunt Jessica who Emma has rescued. Awaiting book numbers four and five. Best Kept Secret by Jeffrey Archer Rs.350

TV TATTLE Marathi mulgi

CHANDRAMUKHI Chautala is an adept police officer fighting crime and solving cases in her own unique ways. Kavita Kaushik who plays the lead as Chandramukhi has always stated that she has a liking for Marathi culture and particularly the mannerisms and cuisine associated with it. Incidentally, Kavita has got an opportunity to be a Maharashtrian in an upcoming track of FIR wherein she will be seen as ‘Gangubai’ in a traditional nine-yard saree. Kavita was really excited for this part and did extensive research by watching Marathi movies to understand the finer nuances.

Magic show

Shabbir Ahluwalia is an Indian television actor, best known for his roles as Rishi Garewal in ‘Kahiin to Hoga’ and Milind Mishra in ‘Kayamath’. He was also the winner of the reality show ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’. He made his debut in Bollywood with the movie ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’. Now after a sabbatical of two years he is back with his mentor Ekta Kapoor’s exciting new show ‘Kumkum Bhagya’. Here is what Shabbir had to say

AFTER astounding people and celebrities across the globe, acclaimed magician Dynamo, is currently touring India. HISTORY TV18, one of the leading factual entertainment channels in India, organised a special event for Dynamo to meet his fans in Mumbai on March 21. The crowd, consisting of over 300 enthusiastic fans, was left spellbound by his magic. Speaking on the occasion, Sangeetha Aiyer, Vice President & Head – Marketing A+E Networks, TV18 stated, “We are humbled by the adulation and success of the Dynamo event and delighted by the excitement of our viewers to see him perform live”.

Role reversal

NIKKHIL Chaddha, the good boy of Indian television, turns bad on Life OK’s brand new show 'Nadaan Parinde'. The new show brings together an ensemble of some of televisions’ most sought after faces, to name a few, Karamveer Rajpal, Gulki Joshi, Tanushree Kaushal and many more. Nikkhil who rose to fame with shows like 'Swarg' and 'Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke' will now be seen playing the baddie Purab. The show is a drama based and shot in a small village near Mohali. The show is being produced by Imtiaz Punjabi's production house Scaling Heights and will go on air sometime in April.

By Sandeep Hattangadi

What is the story line of the show ‘Kumkum Bhagya’? Based losely on Jane Austen’s classic Sense and Sensibility, Kumkum Bhagya is its Indian interpretation, following the life of a Punjabi matriarch Sarla Arora who runs a marriage hall and lives with the hope of seeing her two daughters Pragya and Bulbul who are poles apart, happily married some day! The pivotal characters of this new show are a bunch of strong, feisty women, living together in an all-female, matriarchal family.

Who are the characters in the show? I play Rockstar Abhi with a cult following of his own. Sriti Jha plays the character of Pragya, the elder sister, who is practical, hardworking and committed to supporting her family though she’s barely finished her own studies, she teaches at a college to ensure that her mother Sarla’s (Supriya Shukla) meager earnings from the Kumkum Bhagya marriage hall never fall short in making two ends meet. In the midst of all this pressure on her, she’s forgotten how to unwind or pursue any passions of her own. Mrunal Thakur plays Bulbul, the younger sister who has her head in the clouds. She’s vivacious, smart, stylish and a complete dreamer. It barely occurs to her to snap out her own make-believe, rose-tinted world and be of any real use to her family. She idolises the ruling heartthrob of the country, Rockstar Abhi. Faisal Rashid will be seen as Suresh, the college professor who works closely with Pragya (Sriti Jha). Having led a tough life in the military and lost most of his close ones, he is an embittered soul with much angst and pent-up frustration about life. It remains to be seen how the lives of these two men intertwine with the Arora girls and change their destinies forever.

Science show

DISCOVERY Science, a leading factual entertainment channel, brings yet another programme to tickle the curious minds in the country. 'Secrets of the Earth', the latest show will provide answers to questions that have eluded everyone forever. It will reveal life’s greatest mysteries and smallest wonders. The show is a broad-based new Science series that explores our planet with the same sense of awe and wonder that is normally reserved for alien worlds. It shows Earth in a never-seen-before way with high-end computer graphics, fun visual analogies and a recurring cast of dynamic experts It will air on April 1 at 9 pm on Discovery Science.

What made you accept this show for your comeback after a hiatus of two years? With me producing shows, it was getting very difficult to manage time for acting assignments. But now, I have decided to concentrate on acting. You can’t be away from what you love doing for long. The role appealed to me a great deal. This is the first time that I will be playing a Rockstar on television and in order to look my part, I had to ensure that I did not just get my costume and look right, but also get that attitude right that is required to portray a Rockstar onscreen.

Fan fare

IT was a hilarious experience for CID cop Daya when he shot an episode in the chawls of Mumbai for the ongoing 'Mission Mumbai' series. Daya and Abhijeet were required to be dressed as gundas. The premise required Daya to be beaten by the villain. During the shoot, around 500 odd people had gathered to witness the sequence. Suddenly, in between the shot few children made their way through the crowd and charged towards the villain and started arguing with him. Unaware of the shoot in progress, these little fans of Daya thought their hero was getting beaten up in real and came forward to help him.

Did you accept this show because it’s an Ekta Kapoor show? To a certain extent yes, because I share a good working relationship with her and I have been a part of many of her popular shows. Also it’s a ZEE TV show which is a premier entertainment channel. What about films? I have a few Sanjay Gupta Productions films in my hand. Starting April 15, stay tuned to Kumkum Bhagya at 9 pm every Monday-Friday on Zee TV.

Abhishek Kapoor to bring ‘Mahabharata’ on silver screen D

IRECTOR Abhishek Kapoor will bring Indian mythology's greatest epic The Mahabharata on the big screen. “The Mahabharata expresses the universal truth; it has defined my understanding of spirituality and of all humanity. I aim to translate this onto the big screen, engage minds and deliver a world class cinematic experience”, Abhishek told the PTI. Disney India has announced their plans of gearing up to recreate the

magic of this remarkable story in live action at a scale never seen before in Indian cinema, which will be directed by Kapoor and

written by renowned author Ashok Banker. "Indian mythology has a great wealth of stories which have inspired le-

gions of creative minds and the Mahabharata unarguably is the most ambitious and encompassing. We believe this epic which has engaged generations of Indians will translate into a magnificent silver screen saga”, Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director of Disney India, said. The film will go into pre-production after the completion of Kapoor's next venture with the studio, Fitoor, which goes on the floors in July.

Schumi's wife building a 10-mnpound medical suite at home

LONDON: Ailing seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher's wife is reportedly building a 10million-pound medical suite at their home by Lake Geneva in Switzerland so that he can undergo treatment at home. Corinna Schumacher is using the family's 500-million-pound fortune to build a suite equipped with high-tech medical facilities at their mansion, The Sun reported as Schumacher completes three months in hospital. Corinna has been at the 45year-old's side throughout his stay but wants to take him home despite experts saying that he is unlikely to ever wake up. The German ace has been in an artificially induced coma since December 29 after suffering serious brain injuries while skiing in the French Alps. A friend of the family for 25 years said: "Miracles happen, of course, and as a wealthy man he has the best care money can buy. But all the money in the world cannot fix what has happened to him. The family are making arrangements for a future of permanent immobility."

BRIDGE powerful 2 suiter hand in minors, & south reached 5 diamonds. West led the Queen of spades. East won with Ace. He knew south held the King of spades, because of the lead. He also realised that south, if he could reach his hand, would discard dummy’s heart loser on the King of spades. East therefore unerringly shifted to a heart. South won in dummy. Here the paths of the 2 declarers differed. How would you play the hand on this

defence? The international player went down & Manna scored his contract. It is necessary to establish dummy’s club suit. It is possible only if the suit breaks 4-2 at worst. So what you must do is to ruff 2 clubs in hand. It also gives an entry to your hand for cashing the spade King. So declarer cashed the Ace & King of clubs & ruffed the 3rd club in hand. But the roof came down when west ruffed with King of diamonds & cashed a heart to put the contract down. A pedestrian performance from an expert! Manna showed how the hand should be played. He also analysed the play correctly, & ruffed a club in hand. But there was a significant difference in execution. Before cashing the Ace & King of clubs he cashed the Ace of diamonds, felling west’s singleton King of diamonds. Now he could safely ruff a club in hand, west being unable to over ruff, cash the spade King, discarding the heart loser from dummy. Then he could ruff a heart in dummy, ruff another club in hand, making the club suit good. Now was the time to draw the 2nd trump. Thus Manna made his contract losing only a diamond & a spade.

JOHOR BAHRU: India's Sourabh Verma suffered a heartbreak in the men's singles final of the Malaysia Grand Prix Gold as he went down fighting in a three-game thriller against Simon Santoso of Indonesia here. The 21-year-old from Madhya Pradesh squandered a one-game advantage to lose 21-15 16-21 19-21 to former world number three Simon in an energy-sapping one hour and nine minutes match at the Stadium Perbandaran Pasir Gudang. The world number 30 Sourabh, who had recently clinched three titles -- TATA Open, Austrian International Challenge and Iran Fajr International Challenge -- played his heart out in his fourth final in as many months but it was the 15th seed Simon who had the last laugh. With this win, the world number 56 Indonesian kept his unbeaten record intact against Sourabh. Simon had beaten the Indian in straight games in their only previous meeting in 2012 at the Indonesia Open.

EPANG (MALAYSIA): Britain's Lewis Hamilton led the first Mercedes one-two in 59 years on Sunday as he stormed into the title race with a commanding victory at the Malaysian Grand Prix. Hamilton streaked away from pole position and was never pressured as he finished ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg with four-time defending world champion Sebastian Vettel third for Red Bull. It was the first time both Mercedes drivers have led the field since 1955, when the German marque departed the sport before returning in 2010 and now confirming themselves as the team to beat in F1's new era. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was fourth and Nico Hulkenberg placed a creditable fifth for Force India. The win was sweet for Hamilton, who ended an eight-month win drought since Hungary last July and who was frustrated at the season-opener in Australia when he had to retire early.
