ven though Mumbai has registered an 11 per cent hike as compared to last year, it has come in last among the state's nine divisions. Mumbai’s pass percentage in HSC results this year is recorded at 88.03 per cent as against 76.81 per cent last year. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) declared the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Board examinations results yesterday for about 12 lakh students from across Maharashtra who appeared from 7,682 centres in February this year. The overall pass percentage of Maharashtra

was better than last years' 83.47 per cent, jumping up by about 7 per cent and recording a solid 90.03 per cent. Within the nine divisions of the state board, the Konkan division stood the highest with 94.85 per cent, followed by Amravati 91.85 per cent and Kolhapur with 91.54 per cent. Mumbai, however, stands last among the nine divisions. Navi Mumbai, including Thane and Raigad, recorded a 93.01 pass percentage. Yet again, the girls have outshone the boys in all the divisions. Overall, 92.38 per cent of the girls and 84.73 per cent of the boys have passed. The pass percentage of students from minimum competency vocational

Though Mumbai stood last in most of the rankings, it has recorded 28,781 students with distinctions, the highest number among the nine divisions. Also, it did complete the examinations with the lowest incidents of malpractice. Nashik recorded 326 copycats, followed by Pune with 75 and Amravati with 69 copycats. Mumbai can claim to be a little cleaner with just 52 copycats in the exams The ADC spoke to Sarjerao Jadhav, Chairman of the MS

he Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has trapped a 60-year-old retired lieutenant colonel, working as a project officer for a government scheme, for allegedly accepting a bribe from the complainant to clear a hefty bill for the service he had provided to the government. The accused, Lt Col. (Retd.) Ramesh K. Taneja was a project officer for Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY) funded by the Central as well as the State government. Taneja is an engineer by qualification. The scheme aims at nurturing and providing skills to

poor people in rural areas to give them sustainable self-employment through self-help groups. The government had outsourced this work to many groups including The Indian Stammering Association (TISA). TISA had given the work to the complainant Manish Rashivar who runs an agency. Manish trained 206 people and gave a bill of Rs.11 lakh for his services. He received Rs.7 lakh and a bill of Rs.4 lakh was to be cleared by the government. Director General, ACB Praveen Dixit said, “The accused demanded Rs.1.56 lakh and was caught accepting a bribe of Rs.50,000 as installment from the complainant for

clearing the bill.” ACB Police Inspector on condition of anonymity said, “A complaint was received by the ACB on May 28 and after verifying the claims made by the complainant, a trap was laid today in the compound of Piccadilly building in Aarey Colony. We have done a voice recording in the case.” The government office for this scheme is in the building. Taneja is also the assistant vice president of TOPS security. Taneja has been booked under sections 7 and 13 (1) (d) read with 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He will be produced before the magistrate’s court on Tuesday, the officer added.

State to amend dance bar prohibition act By A Staff Reporter

T

he state cabinet on Monday decided to amend the Dance Bar Prohibition Act to remove a legal lacuna on the ground of which the Supreme Court had struck down the 2005 order of the government to ban dance bars. The state Home Department on Monday brought a proposal to amend Section 31 and 32 of the Act. In 2005, in a controversial decision, dance performances in the bars in the state were banned, but performances at three-star and

higher-standard hotels were exempted. The govt could not defend this discrimination when the ban was challenged before the court. The SC ruled that bar dancers can resume working after bars get back their licenses for performances. The apex court upheld the Bombay HC's ruling that the ban violated the constitutional right to earn a living. Today, the cabinet decided that ministers in charge of Excise, Home and Parliamentary Affairs departments will review the Act and consult group leaders in the state legislature.

‘Jai Bhavani Jai Shivaji’ was the chant that echoed at the Sinhagad fort in Pune on Sunday. The Kondana fort, captured by the great warrior, Tanaji Malusare, was renamed as Sinhagad (the lion fort), for the exemplary valour and lion-like courage shown by Malusare in capturing the fort, while sacrificing his life for it. ADC’s Rajan Ranshoor with a camera in hand visited the place, bringing back the revelry in pictures. June 1 every year is celebrated as Fort Day, in remembrance of G.N. Dandekar, a fort lover. The day saw the Sinhagad fort dressed up like it used to more than 300 years ago, during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s reign. Right from the Pune Darwaja, across the fort, a procession was carried out on Sunday, with a man dressed as Shivaji Maharaj himself and his soldiers accompanying him in an authentic attire. The procession was accompanied by a band, with dhols and other instruments of the bygone era. A few povadas were sung on the way, while some kids also performed the malakhamba, a traditional Maharashtrian sport. Ladies dressed in beautiful nauvari (nine yard) sarees and children adorning the red caps of the mavales (Shivaji Maharaj’s soldiers) were also seen, leaving behind a sense of pride among the ones who attended it.

its assembly election strategy. Sena sources however refuted the contention that Thackerays stayed away from active politics and strappings of power, pointing out to the fact that distant relative of the Thackeray's, Shalini Thackeray had unsuccessfully contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. When asked about the Sena and MNS stand on chief ministerial candidate, leader

of opposition in legislative council Vinod Tawde tried to downplay the Sena move arguing that their sole aim now was to ensure that the ruling Congress-NCP is ousted from power in the state. He argued that the issue of chief ministerial candidate will be discussed amongst the Mahayuti alliance leaders. However, sources in the BJP disclosed that in case the party gets more seats than

the Sena, then Union Rural Development minister Gopinath Munde could be its chief ministerial candidate. However, in case it does not get the numbers then Tawde could be projected as the deputy chief ministerial candidate. Sources added that Munde was not interested in becoming a deputy chief minister again in the BJPSena led Mahayuti dispensation.

ime had run out for over 102 residents of the Campa Cola Compound on June 2, and the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) was waiting to collect the keys to the illegal flats at the G north ward office. But the residents did not show. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Sharad Ughade of the G north ward said, “Our office was opened from May 29 to June 2, but none of the residents turned up to hand over their keys.” Additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani, said, “As the residents have failed to submit their flat keys, we (BMC) have decided to take this matter to the apex body. We will make a fresh plan of action after the hearing today.” Meanwhile, the residents continue to have sleepless nights as they await the Supreme Court's hearing of the fresh plea today. The Campa Cola residents are anxious about their future, there is no solution in hand, but they are still hopeful. A resident said, “I cannot explain what we are going through.” The compound residents had written to civic chief Sitaram Kunte, requesting him not to take any action till the hearing. A resident said, “We had requested the BMC not to start the demolition process on humanitarian grounds till the apex court hears our plea.” Nandini Mehta, another affected resident, said, “Given the conditions and problems of so many residents, it was difficult for us to vacate the flats at such a short notice. We are hoping something positive will come out of the hearing.” Kunte said that a further decision on the issue will be taken after the court's order. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

ifteen months after the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of Yakub Memon, the lone death row convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, the Supreme Court on Monday stayed the execution of Memon. The order from the bench comprising Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice C. Nagappan, who issued a notice to the Maharashtra government and others on the plea of Memon, said that in the meantime execution proceedings will remain stayed. The court also referred to a Constitution bench a plea of Memon that review petitions in death

he Thane district rural police reported a case of rioting and resultant cross complaints on Monday, during a marriage related function in Vashind. A get together of friends and relatives on the eve of a function was organised at Vashind for the marriage of the sister of one Dolly. Friends and relatives had gathered and were dancing to the tune of music on Saturday night, when a rival group of villagers reached the venue, since both the groups had been invited for the function, reports PTI.

The police said that a quarrel arose while dancing when the two groups of villagers began attacking each other with lethal weapons. The situation turned out to be a battleground, the police said. In the fight, at least three people were injured, At least alf a dozen people -three from each group has been been arrested. Both the groups have lodged cross complaints accusing each other for the violence. The complainant in the first case is one Sagar Kirpan aged 19 years and in the other, the complainant is Vijay Kathore aged 43, the police said.

penalty cases should not be heard by the Apex Court in chamber proceedings and be decided in open court. Senior advocate Upamanyu Hazarika, appearing for Memon, said that a similar plea by a death row convict in the 2000 Red Fort attack case, Mohammed Arif, had been referred to a Constitution Bench. The court then said that this petition be also tagged and heard along with the plea of Red fort attack case convict. The bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice B.S. Chauhan had on March 21, 2013, upheld the death sentence of Memon. Dealing with case of Memon, a chartered accountant by profession and

brother of proclaimed offender Tiger Memon, the court had said that he was the driving force and the mastermind behind the blasts that rocked 12 crowded areas in Mumbai leaving 257 dead and over 700 injured. Recently, President Pranab Mukherjee had rejected his mercy petition. Memon had challenged the President's decision to reject his mercy petition. Memon is the younger brother of Mushtaq alias Tiger Memon, the alleged mastermind and main absconding accused. The bench had commuted the death penalty awarded by a special TADA court to 10 others, who had planted RDX explosives-laden vehicles at

various places in Mumbai, to life term by distinguishing their roles from that of Memon. The court had also said that the 10 other convicts on death row were people of lower strata in the society and were without any regular jobs and had fallen prey to the hidden motives of the main conspirators. The ten convicts whose death sentence was commuted to life term were Abdul Gani Ismail Turk, Parvez Nazir Ahmed Shaikh, Mushtaq Tarani, Asghar Mukadam, Shahnawaz Qureshi, Shoaib Ghansar, Firoze Amani Malki, Zakir Hussain, Abdul Akhtar Khan and Farooq Pawale. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

n a major breakthrough, sleuths of the Navghar police claimed to have arrested the man who allegedly raped a 29-year-old woman in Bhayandar on Friday, May 30. The police nabbed Pankaj Srichand Bothra (42) from his apartment in Divine Heritage building located in the posh Jesal Park complex in Bhayandar (E) late on Sunday night. However, in a sensational twist to the sequence of events as narrated by the victim in her complaint that she was raped at gunpoint inside a moving car outside the Bhayandar railway station, the investigating officials on the basis of the Bothra’s confessional statement claimed that the couple who were known to each other and had got intimate at Bothra’s residence. Ponder awhile... “Democracy is when the indigent, and not the men of property, are the rulers.” — Aristotle

NDA rule in I Maharashtra? A

LL these years, the BJP has not been able to make much political headway in Maharashtra. It was most of the time the Congress party which formed the government. Only once, the Shiv Sena has captured power. The BJP has been working with Shiv Sena but so far it has not been able to replace the Congress. The situation has now changed and the BJP has gained confidence. The Modi wave has done it. The Shiv Sena has gone along with Modi and strengthened itself. In the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress got a big beating. A problem has arisen for Shiv Sena and BJP. Shiv Sena chief Thackeray wants to be the chief minister of the state. The BJP has opposed it. It wants the NDA – an alliance of BJP with other parties – to choose the chief minister. It is possible the NDA will choose a BJP leader. Uddhav Thackeray will not, if this happens, like it. Both the BJP and the Shiv Sena know that the Congress rule in Maharashtra will definitely end. The Congress and the NCP are seen as corrupt: The Adarsh scam has tainted the party thick and as in other states, it is sure to be decimated. The Shiv Sena cannot challenge BJP now and it knows that the Modi magic will work in the state as well. Uddhav Thackeray has no go but to agree to the suggestion that NDA will choose the chief ministerial candidate. Another well-known leader who has considerable support in Maharashtra has suddenly jumped into the fray: MNS leader Raj Thackeray has announced he would stake his claim to be the CM. He would have had a chance if the Modi wave had not swept the state. With a more powerful BJP in the fray, there does not seem to be any chance for any other party. Both the Congress and the NCP, which are ruling Maharashtra, are certain to be out. Just one scam – Adarsh – was enough to set the people against them. What is certain is NDA rule in Maharashtra.

followed the visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to India from his arrival to the departure. I did not find any false note either in his observations or meetings. He did not mention Kashmir. Nor did he meet the separatists who are always keen to have talks with the Pakistani leaders, not the Indians. From all angles, it was a positive and constructive visit. That Nawaz Sharif’s advisor Sartaj Aziz reignited the embers of bitter hostility by briefing in Pakistan on Kashmir and several other counts is not understandable. He had to indulge in rhetoric for domestic consumption. Lobbies of the armed forces and maulvis were assured that Nawaz Sharif vented his annoyance in private while talking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Still I wish Sartaj Aziz had not done so because the meeting had changed the climate of opposition in India. Even the rightists in the country had conceded that a new chapter of equation had begun in the history of India and Pakistan relations. Sartaj Aziz, whatever his compulsions, did not have to be a hawk to take us all back to square one. Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh’s statement may have queered the pitch, but Sartaj Aziz is not a bureaucrat and he should have kept IndiaPakistan relations at a higher level.

A zigzag path Therefore, do not see a breakthrough in the stand that the two sides had taken from the time the two countries had parted company in August 1947. In fact, I have sensed more optimism on earlier meetings between the Prime Ministers on both sides. Nothing concrete has come out because the establishments in India and Pakistan are basically hostile to each other. No passage of time has lessened their influence or attitude. Yet the relationship of love and hate smoulders all the time. People in the two countries yearn for friendship or at least normalcy. The meeting between Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif has once again evoked hope for better days. Once again, foreign secretaries of the two governments are to pinpoint what keeps the countries apart. If the past is any guide, the goodwill will not fructify into normal relations. The reason why I say so is the enmity which has been fostered in the minds of people. It was to be seen and believed the enthusi-

asm with which the visit of Nawaz Sharif was awaited in India. The nation should have been engaged in Narendra Modi’s resounding victory or the decimation of the Congress party which has ruled India for several decades. Instead, the attention was focused on Islamabad. The situation during the four or five days between Modi’s unexpected invitation and acceptance by Sharif dominated the Indian media and the drawing rooms, with discussions on whether the Pakistan Prime Minister would come to Delhi at all. And it was all positive. People wanted him to come and lit-

Aspirations abound BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar erally prayed that he would. That he had to bring round the armed forces and the extremist elements in his own country was conceded. But it was argued that his arrival would be an apt step to strengthen democratic ideas in Pakistan. Therefore, when he telephoned to say yes, a wave of relief swept through the country. Most newspapers made his acceptance as the first lead. I recall how at the time of partition there was so much bloodshed — nearly 10 lakh people were massacred on both sides. Yet a few weeks later when I bought a few tapes of Noorjehan at Lahore, the shopkeeper refused to take money since I was from India. A similar treatment was meted out to the Pakistanis. The days of killing were only a few, an aberration of sort. It is beyond me to make out why Pakistan has unilaterally ended the agreement to post two journalists from either country to cover the situation. Pakistan did not have its journalists in position for more than a year. I

YABJE Lama Zopa Rinpoche advises how to get over one's anger. We always think that he or she is bad or mean to me, but then where are you? You can’t find the “I,” you, the person who is receiving harm. You can’t find the “I” inside the body, from the tip of the hair down to the toes, in the nose or the ears. Of course, there is the “I” who creates negative karma, has delusions, and brings many sentient beings to hell by causing them to get angry, but that is not the “I” in which we believe. But you also can’t find that “I” inside the body or mind, or both together. It’s good to analyse this. It can be a very deep discovery and a great shock. You believe the “I” is in the body, somewhere in the chest, but when you check you can’t find it. I’m talking of the “I” in which you normally believe. You can also think of the kindness of the enemy, the person who is angry with you or

could have understood the reason if the two Indian journalists had violated any law or sent a dispatch which had hurt Pakistan’s sentiments. There was nothing like that. Regretfully, news agencies and correspondents from the West are free to report. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to India took a zigzag path. Prime Minister Modi, considered a hawk, surprised even hardliners in both the countries when he invited all heads of SAARC nations. Nawaz Sharif was inclined to accept it. Yet the India-Pakistan animosity came in the way. The army and the extremists exerted so much pressure that the visit seemed abandoned. Ultimately, Sharif asserted himself to attend the swearing-in ceremony. His was not only a gesture because after meeting Modi, Sharif said that a new chapter had begun in the history of the two countries.

The fear that Modi is anti-Muslim was allayed when the two met. Modi realises that he has to take the Muslims along to traverse the path of development, the slogan which has given him and his Bhartiya Janata Party a majority – 282 seats in a 543-member Lok Sabha. It is churlish on the part of Pakistan to question the credentials of a person whom the people of India have elected in fair and free polls. There are enough voices in India to force Modi not to go away from secularism, part of the basic structure of the constitution that even the Parliament cannot change. True, Modi’s party and its mentor, the RSS, are known for their Hindutva approach. Yet they would put the country in a big turmoil if they exerted pressure on Modi to build a temple where the Babri Masjid stood or to tinker with Article 370 which constitutionally gives a special status to Jammu and Kashmir when it acceded to India. What kind of country Modi wants to build is the question. The cabinet he has constituted gives a message that he wants the different elements to feel that he will not discriminate against any segment of the society, religious or linguistic. The first heartening step of his government to appoint a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to unearth black money is a good omen. We should give him time to fulfill the aspirations of people he has aroused. ticed patience, developed their minds on the path, and achieved great liberation: enlightenment. That is how they were able to liberate beings from suffering and bring them to enlightenment. They showed the complete path to full enlightenment to sentient beings in this world, how to achieve happiness, a good rebirth in the next life, and the ultimate happiness of liberation from samsara and full enlightenment. As well as these meditations, please chant every day OM MANI PADME HUM: the Chenrezig mantra, who is the Buddha of compassion, for all sentient beings, to bring every sentient being, every hell being, preta, animal, human being, asura, and sura to enlightenment. OM MANI PADME HUM is the most precious mantra, cherished by numberless buddhas. It is like a wish-granting jewel, giving all happiness to all sentient beings. Please also recite the Maitreya Buddha mantra, the Buddha of loving kindness. — Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Cong blame game A top youth leader of Congress has blamed a party’s CM for the defeat of the party in that state in the latest general elections. By this logic, who should be held accountable for the below half-a-century tally of the Congress during the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls? Of course, in keeping with the Congress culture, the ‘culprits’ are not the top echelons of the party, but their assistants who gave ‘wrong’ advise to the President and Vice President of the party. And obviously, it goes without saying that had it been a Congress victory, the entire "credit" for the feat would have gone to the mother-son duo for their astute leadership.

here may be a female Dalai Lama in the future,' said His Holiness Dalai Lama while answering a student's question about the condition of females in a male dominating society, during his talk, 'Beyond Religion' at Somaiya, Vidhyavihar on Monday. He added,"Females should take a more active role in society. They should get educated and speak more strongly for themselves. The Power Of Truth, Power Of Reason, Power Of Honesty and the Concept Of Equality will support them." The Dalai Lama gave a series of lectures for four days from 30 May to 2 June at the Somaiya College, where he inaugurated the Somaiya School and laid the foundation stone of Sanskriti building, a centre for studying

Dairy is a good source of calcium and while it may not be the only source, it is a valuable addition to your diet. Several studies have shown that getting calcium from food products is healthier for you than getting the nutrient from supplements. Cutting diary out of your diet will mean that you will have to compensate by consuming extra vegetables. essential nutrients: Apart from calcium, dairy also acts as a source of other nutrients such as proteins, magnesium, potassium and vitamins. Studies have shown that people who drink milk or consume milk products, tend to have a higher intake of these nutrients. So, if you eliminate dairy, you will be missing out on several essential nutrients. Cures acidity: We’re sure that whenever you’ve woken up with heartburn, your mother or

grandmother has recommended a glass of cold milk, which instantly eases the discomfort. This home remedy is one of the best ways to treat acidity, as the milk lines your stomach and prevents the acid from coming in contact with the walls of your stomach, which is usually the reason for your discomfort. At the same time, too much milk can aggravate the condition (more on that below), so don’t overdo it. effects on heart health: Saying that diary helps prevent heart disease would be wrong, but any diet that is aimed at preventing or reversing the risks of cardiovascular diseases, will include dairy. Of course, dairy has to be combined with several other vegetables and fruits that are good for your heart’s health as well. The point here, is that anything that is part of a group that benefits you, can’t be entirely bad.

The bad Like most foods, dairy also has a few negative properties that make a good case to avoid it in excessive quantities. These are some ways dairy might not always be beneficial for you: No link to reduced fractures: Since dairy is rich in calcium, people often assume that it will prevent bone injuries such as fractures. However, the fact is that there isn’t any substantial proof that this is a correct assumption. While it does promote bone health, studies have shown that countries with lower consumption of dairy do not have higher instances of fractures. But, you should remember that drinking dairy doesn’t increase your risk of fractures either. Risk of chemicals: Dairy has become a big industry, so quite a lot of milk products are being processed to ensure they last longer and/ or taste better. Chemicals are used to increase Continued on pg 14 «

Continued from pg 13 « the rate of milk production amongst cows and buffaloes, while chemical fertilisers are used to promote the production of animals fodder. All this has led to worries that you might end up consuming these harmful chemicals. Heartburn and inflammation: While milk can temporarily relieve acidity, its fat content promotes the production of more acid in your stomach, which can either aggravate your condition, or lead to inflammation in your gut.

THE BOTTOM LINE So, should you be avoiding dairy? The answer is a resounding no — unless your nutritionist specifically advises you against it. An overview of all the supposedly negative effects of dairy will help you realise that dairy doesn’t really harm you and that most of the concerns hold true for a number of other foods (eg: dairy is a kind of processed food). Avoiding dairy means that you will have to compensate for the nutrients and calcium that you miss out on. So, if you absolutely must avoid milk or milk products, you should ask a nutritionist to draw up a diet plan for you that makes up for the lost nutrients. Choose slim milk over full-fat milk if you must, but remember that the difference, though large when you compare the numbers, won’t really affect you. For example, a 200ml pack of Amul Taaza milk has 3g total fat, while a similar pack of Amul Slim and Trim has 0.3g of total fat — a difference of just 2.7g, which won’t make much of a difference in your daily life.

DAIRY MYTHS BUSTED There are several half-baked truths when it comes to dairy products and some of the theories are downright absurd. Take a look at these myths and learn about the truth that defies them. Myth: Dairy products cause weight gain. Fact: Dairy products do not cause weight gain. In fact, they can help you lose weight. There is substantial research which shows that having three servings of low-fat dairy every day, with a healthy diet can actually help you to lose weight faster. Clinical trials suggest that there is a direct correlation between increased calcium levels and a reduced waist size, body weight and body fat percentage. Myth: Milk causes asthma. Fact: While studies do show that infants with milk allergies are at a higher risk of developing asthma later on in life, there is no scientific proof to support the claim that drinking milk causes asthma. Myth: Eating cheese and other dairy products causes acne. Fact: Again, this is nothing more than a common misconception, as there is no data to prove that dairy products cause acne. In fact, healthy skin requires plenty of vitamin A and D, both of which are present in milk. Myth: Spinach is a better source of calcium than milk. Fact: This is completely baseless. A cup of milk has more calcium than 16 cups of spinach. To meet your daily calcium requirement, you’d need to eat close to 48 cups of spinach every day! Moreover, milk is rich in vitamin D, a nutrient that spinach lacks. The vitamin helps your body absorb the calcium better.

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE First of all, let us start by clearing the air about lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance isn’t an allergic aversion to dairy foods, it is the inability to digest lactose — a type of natural sugar that is present in milk. The reason you might suffer from the condition is because your body doesn’t produce enough lactase, an enzyme that is required to digest lactose. Lactose intolerance that develops in your teens or once you turn into an adult, is usually hereditary and most people suffering from this type of lactose intolerance may not be able to consume most dairy products, but they can consume some, such as

>> Cheeses made from nuts are a great, healthy alternative to regular cheese

>> If you think that dairy will lead to weightgain, you believe in a myth

icecream or yoghurt. On the other hand, children who are born with lactose intolerance can never consume any products that contain lactose. However, if they begin to develop lactase at a later stage in life, then the intolerance goes away partially, or completely. So, several people with partial lactose intolerance can get away with drinking milk in small quantities, or eating aged cheeses such as cheddar and Swiss cheese that are low in lactose. But, if you don’t fall into this bracket, try milk and yoghurt that is lactose-free or switch to non-dairy alternatives such as rice milk, coconut milk, soy milk and products made from these alternatives.

PICK THIS If you have read our section about how dairy can harm you, or you are lactose intolerant and sceptical about digging into your favourite dairy products, take a look at our list of healthy alternatives. Soy cream instead of cream If the idea of making flan, pie or custard with regular cream literally translates into fat and cholesterol on a plate in your head, try soy-based cream instead. It has less saturated fat; 42% lower than the amount found in one serving of single cream. It tastes equally creamy and rich, without containing any traces of dairy, making it a great dairy cream substitute. Nut cheese instead of regular cheese If you want to live a healthier life, but can’t wrap your head around the idea of giving up cheese, try making nut cheese. Made from nuts such as almonds and cashews, these cheeses are rich, creamy, free from casein, lactose, gluten, cholesterol and fat, but don’t lack flavour. Once you learn the basics, you can make sliced cheese, cream cheese and even make cheese that mimics the texture of grated parmesan! Rice milk instead of regular milk Cow’s milk, the dairy product that most

children are raised on, can be easily substituted with rice milk. While regular milk contains 150 calories per serving, rice milk contains 120 calories, a mere 2g of fat and no cholesterol. It is also rich in vitamin B12 and iron, that are usually found in animal produce. So, this is a great option if you are vegetarian. However, it contains less protein than regular milk, so ensure you get your fill of the nutrient from other vegetables, pulses and meats. Tofu instead of paneer If you are looking to switch from paneer to a healthier alternative, look no further than tofu. Apart from being high in protein, it is low in fat and packed with iron, calcium and magnesium, making it a perfect substitute for paneer as it contains all the nutrients, without the high fat content. Almond yoghurt instead of Greek/ thick yoghurt Instead of reaching out for a tub of creamy yoghurt to accompany your meal or to use as a breakfast topping for your granola, try almond yoghurt instead. Made from almond milk, this variant gives you the goodness of healthy fats, fibres, vitamin E and magnesium. It may not contain as much protein as regular yoghurt, but it more than makes up for it with the other nutrients it offers and its low fat content.

Fridge essentials

« HealtHy Food Combinations:

tomatoes & avoCados Shirley Mistry tells you how the Mexicans got it right with guacamole when they combined tomatoes and avocados together and how the food combination can help your health

A

There are some food items that you must keep in your fridge and others that can ruin your diet plans. Take a look at this list so that when you’re feeling peckish, you have a fridge full of healthy items to choose from, says Yamini Walia

W

hen you’re feeling peckish, whether it’s at midnight or during the day, the first place you turn to will, undoubtedly, be your fridge. The food that you have might satiate your hunger pangs and fulfil your cravings momentarily, but most of it will also cause unnecessary weight gain. The only way to avoid this is to stock your fridge with healthy and nutritious options instead of chocolates and processed food. Read on for a list of guilt-free items that you must store in your fridge.

Milk Milk is an essential item in every household. Whether it’s added to cereal, tea or coffee, you can’t function without it. Instead of full-fat milk, opt for skim milk as it contains all the necessary nutrients that your body needs on a daily basis minus the fat. So, you can enjoy your smoothies or shakes without having to worry about the extra calories.

Eggs As a popular TV advertisement’s catchphrase goes — ‘Whether it is Sunday or Monday, eggs should be consumed every day.’ Nutritious and rich in protein, there are several low-calorie meals that you can prepare with eggs. Make an egg salad with carrot and cucumber, or just have plain boiled eggs when your hunger pangs strike. Keep at least a dozen eggs in your fridge and you’ll always have a healthy and tasty snack option at hand. However, if you are over 40-years-old or have high cholesterol, remember to avoid the yolks.

YogHurt During the summer, we all need something to help us cool down and yoghurt is the healthiest option! Keep low-fat yoghurt in your fridge at all times and eat it plain or with your meals. For those who enjoy drinking lassi or chaas, low-fat yoghurt is the best option.

FrEsH VEggiEs Your fridge should be loaded with fresh vegetables at all times. You

can buy pre-cut vegetables (but chopping your own vegetables is more hygienic) such as broccoli, mushrooms, carrots and celery to add to salads or have with a dip as a snack. A salad with fresh vegetables or even steamed vegetables makes for a healthy and delicious snack.

Fruits Fruits are the healthiest option when you feel like snacking Whether it’s for breakfast, as a snack or in a dessert, make sure you eat fresh fruit in every way possible. If you are craving juice, then ditch the processed cans and make fresh fruit juice at home. You can also store frozen fruits in your freezer to add to smoothies. However, make sure they don’t contain any added sugar.

PEanut ButtEr Peanut butter has gained a bad reputation for being unhealthy, but it’s a healthier option than plain butter. Peanut butter is packed with healthy, mono-unsaturated fats, so spread it on a whole-wheat bread as a snack or for breakfast. Remember that eating it in moderation is key.

s children, we were handed slices of tomatoes sprinkled with salt or a bowl of tomato soup as a snack. Apart from being delicious, tomatoes are full of healthy nutrients. This is because they are rich in fibre and help you stay full for longer. They are also rich in water and are extremely low in calories, cholesterol and saturated fats. Apart from boosting your health, the beta-carotene in tomatoes also helps you get soft, supple and healthy skin. They are also packed with calcium and antioxidants, so they help keep your bones strong and slow down the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Moreover, tomatoes help control your blood sugar, prevent gall bladder/ kidney stones and give you healthy hair. But, they are always in the limelight for their high content of lycopene, a substance that is responsible for making your skin immune to UV rays, which are a major cause of ageing skin. Lycopene also improves your bone mass, but above all, it is a cancer-fighting agent that can counter the risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, prostate, cervical, rectal, prostate, colon, pharynx, throat and ovaries. On the other hand, avocados, a superfood in their own right, have a host of health benefits to offer as well. Just like tomatoes, they help control your blood sugar and blood pressure levels, help you maintain a healthy heart, improve your eyesight and have anti-ageing properties. Apart from this, the butter-y fruit is low in calories, cures bad breath, has anti-inflammatory properties and can even prevent birth defects, as it is rich in folic acids. Avocados can also prevent you from breast cancer and prostate cancer. However, most importantly, they help in the better absorption of nutrients, which is how they become even more beneficial, when combined with tomatoes. A recent study conducted at Purdue University, showed that carotenoids, such as lycopene, cannot be absorbed by your body, unless they are paired with small amounts of fat. Studies suggest, that pairing the tomatoes and avocados together, helps your body absorb the nutrients in a quantity that is seven times greater than when the two are eaten individually. In another study, conducted at the Ohio State University, it was found that when people consumed avocados and tomatoes together, they absorbed four and a half times the amount of lycopene, as compared to eating tomatoes by themselves. So, why eat only one of these superfoods when you can pair them together and multiply the benefits? Make guacamole or salsa, add them to your salads or make wraps to get the most out of this super combination.

HuMMus Many of us enjoy hummus, a dip made of chickpeas and tahini, served with pita bread. It is an extremely healthy breakfast option and has the same texture and consistency as peanut butter. Apart from its nutritional value, hummus tastes delicious when paired with vegetable sticks as well.

wHolE-wHEat tortillas Whole-wheat tortillas are a fun, healthy alternative to bread. The carbs in whole-wheat tortillas are mostly complex, so they cause little to no increase in your blood sugar levels. Also, they are less processed, which makes them nutritionally superior to tortillas that are made from maida.

>> Studies suggest that both tomatoes and avocados should be eaten together for multiple health benefits

Standing issues Do you stand a lot? While standing may be better than sitting still all day long, if you stand still for too long, you’re actually putting the weight of your entire body on your knees, increasing the strain on your joints. Move around and stretch regularly to avoid this.

2 Get moving Daily activity and regular exercise is extremely important if you want to save yourself from knee pain. One of the most common causes of stiff knees and chronic pain is staying motionless for too long. The longer you sit, the creakier your knees will get and in turn, the more pain you will experience.

deAl with Knee PAin

Keep your weight constant Being on the heavier side puts you at a higher risk of knee pain. But, even if you’re not overweight, constantly fluctuating weight puts undue pressure on your knees. Maintain a balanced weight in order to keep knee pain away.

7

of

Knee pain can be a hindrance whether you’re sitting, standing or sleeping. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how to prevent it as well as how to deal with existing knee pain

5

Ice the area For a quick-fix for the pain (especially if you can’t get sleep at night), ice the area with an ice pack. Remember never to apply ice directly to the sore area, or it will sting.

Shoe matters You may love your platform slippers, live in your gym shoes and think you’re a pro at walking in your heels, but wearing any one type of footwear for too long could cause the arch in your foot to collapse, placing too much stress on your ankles, which in turn will harm your knee! Wear good shoes, that keep the arches of your feet protected in order to avoid knee pain.

8

Get help Don’t shy away from using canes and walking sticks. So what if you’re in your 20s? It’s better to keep the pressure off your knee now than to prolong it because of your ego. Not taking immediate precautions will mean you may need a walking stick permanently as time goes by.

6 Make life easy When you’re suffering from knee pain, stretching, tiptoeing and squatting will aggravate the pain. Organise your home and your life in such a way that you avoid such postures. Keep a stool handy so that you can reach things and avoid bending too much.

4 Massage yourself A vigorous massage will do more harm than good, but to relieve the pain, massage your knee a little in order to encourage blood flow. Don’t massage it if it hurts, visit your doctor instead.

9

Compression works If your knee is badly injured and the pain is intense, try a compression bandage. Wrap the sore or injured area with a bandage (an elastic one works best) and keep it elevated. Make sure the bandage is not too loose or too tight and don’t keep it on longer than a day.

Being flat footed is extremely common but it can be corrected easily if it is detected when the person is still in his/ her growing years. However, if you aren’t sure of your foot type, take this quiz to find out, says Shirley Mistry

We’re sure that most of your day includes constantly cursing the humid Mumbai heat and the amount that it makes you sweat. But, if you’re blaming your body odour solely on the weather, Dev Goswami suggests you take this quiz, as there could be surprising factors you never knew could cause it

eat, bacteria, physical exertion, gassy food, irregular bowels... all these are factors that we already know result in sweat and unflattering body odour. But, there are several other factors that can make people wrinkle up their noses when they are around you. You might know about some, but most are quite surprising. Take this quiz to find out. 1. Which of these is most likely to cause you to sweat? a. Potatoes. b. Tomatoes. 2. You sweat more on days when you’re stressed about work or your personal life. a. True. b. False. 3. Get physical A certain amount of activity will help prevent knee pain, but when you are already suffering from it, you should avoid intense exercises. Opt for physiotherapy, which will help you perform everyday tasks and heal your knee, keeping pain away in the future as well.

rigorous workout or a session of intense physical activity. a. Yes. b. No. You find walking fast or running extremely uncomfortable. a. Yes. b. No.

Mostly As If you have chosen this option for most, or all the questions, you have flat feet. Although some people have flexible flat feet and do not feel any discomfort, if you have answered ‘a’ to all these questions, you certainly don’t fall into that category. Although not much can be done in terms of correcting or creating an arch in your adult years, there are things you can do to reduce the discomfort. Visit a doctor, who will prescribe special shoes or arch and heel support inserts to place inside your shoes. Also, as a general practise, opt for footwear with a built-in arch as opposed to those that have a flat sole — you will find that these shoes are much more comfortable. Mostly Bs If you answered with option ‘b’ to all the questions, or all the questions barring the first one, you either have flexible flat feet and aren’t experiencing any discomfort, or you don’t have flat feet at all. If it is the former, the signs and symptoms of pain, aches and inflammation in your lower legs may not show up now, but there is no assurance that they won’t show up in the future, especially as you age. So visit a doctor to find out more about the best course of action. If you fall into the latter category, you have nothing to worry about.

N

ow that you have your answers, check with our list below where we tell you the correct answers and also explain how those factors result in body odour.

1: b. Tomatoes: This question was, quite frankly, a tough one. It was a recent study, carried out on the premise that tomato stalks have a compound that smells like sweat, linking tomatoes to excessive sweating. The study concluded that tomatoes indeed contain a substance called terpenes, which, when broken down by the digestive system, can result in sweat and body odour. 2: a. True: You can blame this on nature. Sweating is your body’s natural defence mechanism (the theory is that when you’re in physical danger, sweating keeps your body from overheating. This works if you are, for example, running away from an animal). So, when you are stressed, your body’s defence mechanism is activated and this results in excessive sweating. To avoid this, try to keep stress at bay. 3: b. Spicy food: The logic here is similar to how tomatoes make your body produce excess sweat. When spices get metabolised in our bodies, they produce several compounds and chemicals that cause body odour.

causing hiccups) results in you sweating while you eat? a. Food that is just off the stove. b. Spicy food. 4. If your diet is low in carbohydrates, will that result in your body producing excess sweat? a. Yes. b. No.

7. During the summer, using a deodorant spray/ stick is enough to deal with sweat and its accompanying odour. a. True. b. False. 8. If you want to avoid offending people by constantly burping, it is important that you chew and swallow slowly. a. Yes. b. No.

5. While fibre is good for health, too much of it can place a heavy burden on the digestive system and result in gas/ body odour. a. True. b. False.

9. Letting your body air dry after a bath will help you cool down and so, help you avoid sweat and body odour. a. True. b. False.

6. Snoring has no connection with any kind of body odour. a. The statement is correct. b. The statement is incorrect.

10. Which of these will ensure that you’re free from bad breath? a. Toothpaste and a brush. b. Toothpaste, brush and a tongue cleaner.

the correct answers 4: a. Yes: Following a low carb diet is recommended as it doesn’t add fat to your body, which results in your body burning stored fat to meet its energy requirements. The side-effect is that you’ll end up sweating more as your core body temperature increases. Combat this by consuming a low-calorie diet. 5: a. True: Fibre is like a double-edged sword. Too little and you’ll end up constipated, too much and your digestive system won’t be able to deal with it. The indigestion of the extra fibre will lead to gas, which in turn, will cause flatulence as the gasses try to find a way out of your body. 6: b. The statement is incorrect: The answer might surprise you, but let us explain it. Snoring means that for the most part, when you are asleep, your mouth will remain

open. This makes your gums and tongue dry up, causing bad breath. 7: b. False: All deodorant sprays and sticks do is mask body odour — they don’t treat the underlying problem. To truly get rid of body odour, you need to figure out what is making you sweat and treat it. 8: a. Yes: Eating too quickly, without chewing properly, is a common reason for burping. This is because when you eat fast, or talk while you eat, you end up swallowing air. The only way your stomach can get rid of the air is by burping. 9: b. False. The evaporation of water from your skin might make you feel cool, but moist areas are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria will react with sweat to produce body odour. So, to ensure that you don’t start smelling bad after your bath, towel dry yourself properly. 10: b. Toothpaste, brush and tongue cleaner: Using a tongue cleaner will clear the bacteria from your tongue and ensure fresher breath. Not cleaning your tongue will mean that you will suffer from bad breath through the day, no matter how much gum you chew.

Driving fit Do you know why travelling to work is so similar to being at work for an entire day? You sit through both things for extended periods of time, ruining your attempts to stay fit! Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you about a few ways through which you can make that long drive home less unhealthy

W

e’re no strangers to the stress and chaos of daily life, but we’re not really running back and forth like we think we are. Most of us spend the entire day at work, sitting glued to our desks, trying to chase deadlines that keep evading us. After a long, tiring day, we get into our cars and make that long trip home, ensconced in a sea of traffic and sitting still – again. We get very little exercise in a day and being motionless for so many hours is doing more harm than good. Instead, use the time that you spend in traffic constructively, by following a few of these tips to stay fit while you drive. Also remember that while driving barefoot may be convenient, it will lead to cracked heels, sore, peeling skin and can even cause several infections if the dirt from the bottom of your car sticks on your skin for too long. So, even if your shoes aren’t comfortable to drive in, make sure you keep a pair of driving shoes in the car to keep your feet clean, infection-free and most importantly, moving.

legs were creaking when you got out of the car after a long drive? At every single or jam, bend back slightly and stretch your legs out in front of you. If you’re too tall to stretch them forward, lift them up and down a bit to get the circulation back in your legs and keep them from cramping.

Work your butt We’re not kidding! You can do this when you’re at a standstill or even when you’re sitting. Inhale to suck in your glutes, hold the position for a few seconds and then release. Repeat the motion to tighten and tone your muscles.

tummy tuck Just like you did with your bottom, work your abs when you’re driving by sucking in your tummy and holding the pose for a while. If you hold it for at least twenty seconds, you’ll be doing a pretty good workout on your drive home.

arms will thank you later. Constantly switching gears may be a workout for some, but if you just lift and drop your arms and then move them in circular motions while you sit, they’ll be getting a better workout when you’re stuck in traffic.

Snack right It’s natural to feel like snacking when you’re in the car. Instead of diving into a bag of wafers, keep healthy bars or nuts in your car (although we suggest not eating altogether) and rehydrate with some water when you’re at a signal.

make ShapeS With your feet! The best way to sneak a little exercise into your drive is when you’re at a signal, or stuck in a traffic jam for a long time. Just make sure your handbrake is up so that you don’t roll forward accidentally! Place both feet on the floor of the car and swivel the ankles around, making shapes in the air without lifting your heel. If you wear sneakers or formal shoes, this would also be a good time to work your toes around to keep them active.

M

ost of us know that we shouldn’t take any signs (we’re talking mainly about pain) that our body gives us lightly. But, there are several instances, when you can’t afford to miss a deadline or are too worried about what you will find out if you visit a doctor. That’s probably when you tell yourself, ‘It will go away on its own.’ Sometimes, it does and all is well. But, that won’t be the case if the signs your body is giving you is one of these as the following pains and signs need immediate medical attention. Read on, as we tell you why.

Unbearable headache Lack of sleep, dehydration and a common cold — headaches have become a problem that you don’t need to worry too much about. In most cases, this theory might be true. But, if you feel that it is the worst headache of your life, there might be a serious medical problem that is causing it.

The causes can range anywhere from sinus to brain tumour. If your headache is accompanied by no other symptoms or if you can’t think of a reason for it to occur, visit a doctor at the earliest.

bUrning legs The fact that you probably furrowed your eyebrows at the fact that something such as burning legs exists, shows that you need to know more about it. This is a pain that is quite uncommon and so, if you do experience it, you need to visit a doctor. Burning legs could be the first sign of diabetes and when it is accompanied by frequent pins and needles sensations, it could also be an indication of nerve damage.

calf pain You might think that this is a normal symptom after walking or running and that

you shouldn’t worry too much about it, but, this kind of calf pain usually disappears once you rest your legs. If it doesn’t, then you could be suffering from serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, which is a clot in your viens. So, if you suffer from pain in your legs that doesn’t go away, you should visit a doctor immediately.

But, it is easy to confuse stomach ache with abdominal pain that affects the area just below your stomach and above your groin. This kind of pain could be a sign of kidney stones, or your appendix could be acting up. Whatever may be the reason, you’re going to need medical attention, so don’t take it lightly.

omen talk about several health issues, but intimate hygiene is usually swept under the rug. People are not aware about intimate hygiene because it is considered taboo in our country. If you don’t take care of your intimate parts, you are likely to suffer from unpleasant and dangerous health problems. The most common ones are itching, foul smell and dryness. Bacterial, yeast and fungal infections are other outcomes of poor intimate hygiene. In a worst case scenario, these can develop into urinary tract infections. Your intimate areas are more sensitive than the other parts of your body. Dr Kaustubh D. Kulkarni, obstetrician & gynecologist, clinical director and co-founder of Siddhi Life Assisted Reproduction Centre, says, “The skin in your intimate area is easily susceptible to microbial infections.

Intimate areas constantly secrete lubricating material along with elimination of urine. When this gets mixed with sweat, it results in increased moisture levels, leading to a foul smell and infections. Menstruation and sexual intercourse also demands good intimate area hygiene.” The good old soap and water routine might do more harm than good. Dr. Kaustubh tells us, “The intimate areas of your body are more affected when your skin’s acid balance is disturbed. Many people just rely on water and soap for their daily cleansing routine, without knowing how harsh they are for your sensitive skin. Douching or constant cleaning is also a common practise in an attempt to keep intimate areas clean. However, it is important to use a specially formulated cleanser suited to the pH and skin needs of your intimate areas.” Vaginal pH ranges between 3.5 to 4.5 and at this

shortness of breath This is not really a pain, but you must remember that your body is not designed to suffer from breathlessness randomly. Extreme physical activity is the only situation where you shouldn’t be too concerned about being short of breath. If you haven’t been exercising and still feel breathless, it could be a sign of several pulmonary (lung) conditions. Cardiovascular problems too could be a reason for suffering from shortness of breath, so, don’t take it lightly. *While all the signs and pains mentioned above can be symptoms of some serious problems, we don’t mean to scare you. Just because you have one symptom doesn’t necessarily mean that you suffer from a serious condition. However, it might be a possibility that you do and so, you should visit a doctor to ensure that you can be treated as soon as possible.

optimal pH, the vagina contains a specific balance of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacilli and some yeast cells. Cleaning your intimate areas with water (pH 7) or with a highly alkaline medium such as soap (pH between 8 to 11) disturbs this balance and might result in dryness, foul odour, irritation, discomfort and in serious cases, infections. To counter this, opt for an intimate hygiene wash with a formula that is pH balanced. Dr. Kaustubh D. Kulkarni tells us, “Integrating a dedicated intimate care routine ensures the healthy existence of beneficial bacteria. They secrete lactic acid which helps in maintaining the pH of your intimate area between 3.5 to 4.5 and prevents odours and microbial infections. In fact, we recommend pH balanced washes before an In Viro Fertilisation (IVF) cycle too.” It’s important to clean only the exterior part of your intimate area as washing it from within might be harmful. Do this at least once a day to avoid transmission of harmful bacteria. When you have your period, make sure you wash your intimate area twice a day to avoid infections.

« Problem solver: ask our beauty exPert BarBara, oUr BeaUtY exPert, Will helP Fix YoUr ProBleMs

Dear Barbara, I don’t like wearing closed shoes during the summer. So, I only wear flats, as they are comfortable and cool. But, this means that my feet remain unprotected. As a result, they have become dry and cracked. What should I do to solve this problem? Please help. — sujata sharma, Borivali Dear sujata, Dry feet and cracked soles are a very common problem during the summer. You are experiencing this problem because you wear flats instead of closed shoes. But, we understand that during the summer, closed shoes are not a very comfortable option. You should exfoliate your feet to remove dead skin cells. You can also apply a mixture of petroleum jelly and lemon juice on your heels. The acidity in the lemon will heal the cracks in your feet.

Perfect Pores The first step to getting healthy, flawless skin, is understanding your pores. Shirley Mistry tells you everything you need to know about your pores

P

ores are one part of your body that you often pay little or no attention to. You also often overlook the role that they play in making your skin look healthy. Take a look at our guide to find out all you need to about your pores, including the functions they perform, how they get clogged, how to keep them clean and a few nifty tips on how you can make them appear smaller.

What Do theY Do? Pores are tiny openings on the surface of your skin that are essentially an outlet for the sebum (oils) that your body produces. Your sebaceous glands release oil that travels up to your pores and helps your skin stay moisturised. If not for this natural system, your skin would become cracked and dry. They are home to the hair follicles on your body, barring the soles of your feet, palms and eyelids. They also act as an outlet for sweat and dead cells.

CloGGeD Pores

>> Use a foot scrub to get rid of dead skin and prevent cracked heels

Pores get clogged either when your body wants to expel dead skin cells but fails to do so quickly, clogging the opening of the pore, or because of external factors such as pollution, improper hygiene and/ or the use of

makeup. When your pores are clogged, the sebum produced by your body doesn’t have an outlet and this can lead to oily skin as well as pimples. They also result in what we commonly refer to as blackheads, which are clumps of dead skin cells that haven’t been expelled from your body, combined with sebum and dirt. These often get oxidised and take on a blackish tinge. Touching your face too much will cause heavy oil accumulation, the same way excessive brushing leads to oily hair. This leads to pimples and clogged pores.

UNCloG YoUr Pores Follow these steps to ensure that your pores stay clean and your skin is saved from the hassle of dealing with bouts of acne. Wipe it off: If you use makeup regularly, make sure that you clean your face thoroughly at the end of the day. Traces of your makeup and the removers you use to take it off, often settle into your pores and block them. scrub it away: Next, make sure to use a gentle scrub, every alternate day. Instead of merely rubbing it on your face, use circular motions and

massage it into your skin, to help remove the grime and dirt that has settled into your pores. salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is known to keep pimples at bay, as it helps dissolve the dirt and dead cells that clog your pores and also helps your pores function normally. So, you should regularly use a face wash that contains salicylic acid. Facials: The best way to deal with clogged pores and the resulting blackheads, is to get a facial. The steam helps relax your pores and makes it easy to extract any blackheads or dirt that may be clogging them.

Make theM look sMaller Several people have large pores that can look unsightly. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about this, as large pores are genetic. However, you can make them look smaller. Use an astringent or toner after you cleanse your face in order to tighten your pores. Always use a primer before you put on your makeup, as it blurs imperfections and reduces the appearance of pores, making your skin look flawless.

>> Use a facewash that contains salicylic acid in order to keep your pores clean

Dear Barbara, I have had radiant skin all my life. So much so that wherever I go, I get compliments for my skin. I used to think it was because of my genes, as my parents also have spotless skin. However lately, I have started to get pimples on my face. I have tried all types of creams, but none of them seem to help. Are there any home remedies for this? Please help. — amanat sindhya, Versova Dear amanat, There are several home remedies to help get rid of pimples, so don’t panic! Pimples are very common and are experienced by almost everyone. You are lucky that you haven’t encountered them so far. You can put ice cubes on the affected area as they will shrink your pimple and the redness associated with it. You can also take toothpaste and apply it on the affected area, just before going to bed. In the morning, your pimple will be reduced to half of it’s size. Lemon, garlic and vinegar are some other remedies that you can try at home to heal pimples.

Industry bodies are clamouring for a rate cut to boost growth, but RBI may keep key interest rates unchanged By A Business Reporter

T

he Reserve Bank of India may maintain the status quo with regard to the key interest rate in its monetary policy review today in view of the need to curb inflation, which has remained stubbornly high. Incidentally, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday and is believed to have discussed the macro-economic situation. The RBI had increased the key repo rate three times since Rajan took over as Governor in September, but kept the policy rate unchanged at 8 % at the previous review on April 1 as inflation, especially of food items, hovered at over 8 %. Food inflation in April stood at 9.66 % and retail inflation at 8.59 %. The bi-monthly policy review today is the first after Modi assumed office

on May 26. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, in a Facebook posting, has stressed on reviving growth momentum and containing inflation. India's economic growth remained below the 5 % mark for the second year in a row at 4.7 % in 2013-14, although industry is hopeful of a rebound with a stable government headed by Modi. After meeting Jaitley last week, Rajan had said fighting price increases is a priority and the central bank has always maintained a balance between the need to check inflation and prop up growth. The RBI is "expected to keep the interest rates unchanged" , says Senior Economist with Dun & Bradstreet India Arun Singh, adding "A credible fiscal consolidation plan, coupled with tangible measures to bring down inflation by the new government, might lead to an eas-

"Power cuts in the northern, southern and western regions have forced industrial units to curtail their industrial production by about 30% in April-May 2014, the loss of industrial production is likely to be at 35-40% in June-July, Assocham said on the basis of feedback received from its various constituents in these three regions. During the April-May period, industrial units faced 20-25% power shortages. "As such, the regions were reeling under tremendous power shortage in April and May and the rains added to it as defects in the transmission system," said Assocham Secretary General, D S Rawat. The feedback is based on the latest power situation in leading states that have concentration of industrial presence at substantial level. UP and AP are two states in which power cuts exceed 10-12 hours a day and face the worst energy crisis which will further deepen in the absence of corrective measures, and therefore industrial locations in these two states would have to curtail their industrial production to the extent of 45%. UP, which has a power requirement of over 8,282 MU, has availability of little over 7,358 MU with deficit ranging over 11.2%. The situation is no better in AP where the power deficit is approximately 12.1%. The availability in the state is only 7,976 MU against the requirement of 9,070 MU

ing of monetary policy earlier than expected. Similarly, Indian Overseas Bank Chairman and Managing Director M Narendra also believes that the RBI is likely to maintain status quo as inflation is still high and there is a threat of the monsoon being weak. An emerging risk on the inflation front is the likelihood of a deficient monsoon, which could lead to a surge in food inflation and affect growth adversely. The India Meteorological Department has indicated a 60 % probability of the El Nino weather phenomenon this year along with a below-normal monsoon. However, Industry bodies are clamouring for a rate cut to boost growth. Assocham said “the low level of wholesale inflation of items such as wheat, pulses, vegetables and oil seeds would give extra room to the RBI to be accommodative.

ndustry body Assocham has pitched for early roll out of GST, revival of SEZs, a stable tax regime, slashing of tax rates and tax incentives for creation of Indian brands to be introduced in the first Union budget under Narendra Modi-led government. The industry chamber shared its suggestions for reviving growth and boosting the manufacturing sector in a pre-budget consultation meeting with Revenue Secretary Rajiv Takru in New Delhi. "The first Union budget by the new government should reflect its tax policy direction to stimulate economic growth, contain inflation and create conducive environment for investment especially in manufacturing and infrastructure which generates large-scale employment," Assocham said. The industry chamber sought tax incentives to promote in-house R&D and create Indian brands. "It is vital that tax incentives for creation of Indian brands be introduced in the coming budget to promote national and corporate energies to create world-class Indian brands. Such global brands can contribute increasingly to import substitution and value added exports," Assocham said. Among other things, it sought extension of tax benefits to telecom and power sectors, simplification of tax structure, bringing down personal and corporate income tax rates, slashing of excise duty and service tax rates to 10 per cent from 12 per cent and creation of a conducive tax regime for attracting investments. Pointing out that indirect tax has always been an effective tool to drive economic and social growth, Assocham pressed for the indirect tax structure to be replaced with Goods and Services Tax (GST) to in-

he “Government will focus on planned housing with necessary facilities in the coming years since 50 % of the Indian population is expected to live in urban areas by the 2050. The task is challenging since the Ministry has only Rs. 35,000 crore to provide affordable housing and for slum development in the 12th Plan while the requirement is much larger, said M. Venkaiah Naidu, Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) elaborating that the Government is committed to the goal of ‘Housing for all by 2022’. The overall housing shortage is nearly 18.78 million as per estimates of 2012. Of this 95 % of the shortage is in EWS/LIG category. By 2020, 40 % of the population will be living in urban areas and by 2050, 50 % of the population will be living in urban areas. It is for this reason that Public Private Partnership and CSR is required in this sector, he added. The Minister further elaborated that the corporates, PSUs, the local bodies, financial institutions like LIC, Banks etc. must take up the responsibility of providing affordable housing to their personnel. The Minister also explained that environmental clearances appear to be a bottleneck for housing projects which he will take up separately with the Ministry of Environment and Forests. He was speaking to media after addressing a high level consultation meeting with the officers of Ministry of HUPA and Urban Development and other stake holder organisations like National Housing Bank, Indian Banker’s Association, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, CII, and representatives of CREDAI, in New Delhi today. The Minister pointed out that 2022 is the 75th year of India’s freedom when the dream of the urban poor for a housing with convergent services needs to be realised. Several suggestions were given at the meeting by various stake holders to bring buoyancy to the housing sector like simplification of procedures, tax reforms, land reforms, administrative reforms, lending reforms as well as giving infrastructure status to the construction sector. One of the participants informed that Housing investment of nearly Rs. 5 lakh Crore is stuck due to want of various clearances. Venkaiah Naidu said that all these issues will be taken up in the coming 100 days and concerns of all stake holders will be addressed. He also said that very soon a conference of the Housing and Urban Development Ministries of the States will be called to understand their issues and to find a speedy solution for the same. The Ministry of HUPA made a presentation which introduced the concept of Housing for All by 2022, Scope of the task, Estimation of resources required, Possible strategy, Proposed organisational structure and flagged the Issues for further discussion. The Urban Development Ministry also elaborated the Urban Infrastructure Plan for the coming years. Anita Agnihotri, Secretary, Ministry of HUPA emphasized that infrastructure status for the affordable housing sector may be taken up with the Ministry of Finance and a policy for rental housing may be laid out since there are over 10 % houses that are lying vacant because of rental policy issues.

hivaji Park Nagarik Sangh holds at least one programme every month at its hall which provides an ideal setting for a 'baithak' or a music concert. A 'baithak' is a gathering in an intimate situation. The distance between the artist and the audience which exists in an auditorium is absent here and there is a live contact between each member of

the audience and the performer which makes the performance more livelier than the one in an auditorium in which the light is only on the performer. Deepa Avadhanam began the concert with her vocal recital. There are very few Tamilians who are into Hindustani music. Names of such stalwarts include M S Gopalkrishnan, N Rajam or Kala Ramnath. Avadhanam too was originally trained into Carnatic music by Sulochana Nagarajan for well over 7 years, “While studying management at an institute in Jamshedpur, I was exposed to Hindustani music through 'SPICMACAY' I recall having

teacher and singer from the Agra gharana also teaches her. "I can call my music a combination of the Jaipur and Agra gharana.," said Avadhanam. The raga 'Puriya Dhanashri' which is one of the most beautiful sunset time ragas. There is a sense of longing and wistfulness in this melody which she tried to project. One wished she should have been more confident. She also sang 'Sur Sangat' a very famous composition in the raga 'Tilak Kamod' that she had learned from the elder musician Sushilarani Patel. She was accompanied on the tabla by Milind Joshi and on the harmonium by Atul Phadke. Nihar Kabinittal, the young bansuri player shuns the pyrotechnics which dominates the modern day bansuri playing. " I revere Pannalal Ghosh who invented this instrument and his style which is placid and totally khyal oriented. Therefore, I stick to his style taught to me by Nityanand Haldipur.," said Kabinittal. Dhondutai leaves behind a legacy

By Amarendra Dhaneshwar

hondutai Kulkarni, the doyenne of the Jaipur Attrauli gayaki, who passed away at the ripe age of 87 on Sunday, was a highly respected singer of the earlier generation. We have heard innumerable concerts by her in this city and thoroughly enjoyed her rendition of rare ragas like 'Mirabai Ki Malhar', 'Phulashri' and 'Lalita Gauri'. Her last concert appearance was at the Parle Tilak Mandir two years ago when she took the initiative and paid a musical tribute to her mentor Late Azizuddin Khan.

Dhondutai, as always, gave a spirited performance on the occasion. Her fast tonal passages, crystal clear and full of energy, belied her advancing age. We also remember her 'Sindhura' at the evening programme organised by the Indian Music Group of St. Xavier's College. The upper octave oriented raga could pose a challenge to the vocal chords of any ordinary singer. Not for Dhondutai! She could traverse the territory of the raga with authority and elicited appreciation of the audience. Dhondutai always considered herself fortunate because she was trained by the great Kesarbai Kerkar whose music in now a part of the spacecraft which was launched by the scientists in the United States which contained superb specimens of human creativity. Kesarbai, when in the prime of her career which lasted from 1935 to 1965, refused to be bogged down to teaching. However, she accepted Dhondutai as a student and her valuable guidance was of enormous help to Dhondutai. Her mastery of rare and compound ragas stemmed from her talim with Bhurji Khan, Laxmibai Jadhav and Azizuddin Khan. Her musical legacy has been passed on to her students.

ilms on farmer suicides and problems faced by them have come and gone but director Vijay Pohankar’s ‘Bhakar’ is one such film which highlights the problems of the farmers in Vidarbha and how sometimes a heavy rainfall and a lean rainfall harm their crops, pushing them into a debt trap, making

their lives miserable due to the middlemen traders who fleece the farmers. Kishor Kadam, who portrays the central character of ‘Bhau’ in the film, trying to fight for farmers' rights against those in the corridors of power, says, “I accepted this film because director producer Vijay Pohankar is a farmer and a lawyer himself and knows the problems of the farmers first

hand and how the government's package for the farmers doesn’t reach them, landing in the wrong hands. The director has portrayed a futuristic picture when if the farmer decides not to grow produce and take up some other occupation, how can we get food on our plates? That is the pertinent question raised by him and that’s why I agreed to do this role.”

Nadal won a record 32nd straight match at Roland Garros on Monday, beating Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 to improve on his own record by one. The Spaniard is an eight-time French Open champion with a 63-1 record on the red clay in Paris. His only loss came in the fourth round in 2009, when he was a four-time defending champion for the first time. Nadal will next face fifth-seeded David Ferrer, the man he beat in last year’s French Open final. Ferrer defeated 19th-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1. In April, Ferrer beat Nadal on clay

Shame old story, India crash to second straight loss through late goal T

HE HAGUE (Netherlands): India crashed to their second defeat in the men’s hockey World Cup by conceding a late goal yet again to go down 1-2 against England at the Kyocera Stadium here today. England prevailed through a 69th-minute penalty corner rebound conversion by Simon Mantell. India had an equal run of play against England, and even saw a penalty stroke being cancelled, paving the way for England’s victory. Ashley Jackson’s penalty corner shot was blocked by goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh, but Mantell capitalised on the rebound by sending a diagonal reverse shot into the net to leave the Indian players crestfallen. India had lost their opening game against Belgium 2-3 after conceding a goal with seconds left to the final hooter.

EW DELHI: The celebrated Indian wrestling duo of Yogeshwar Dutt and Sushil Kumar sparkled on debut in new weight categories by winning a gold and silver medal respectively in the International Competition in Sassari city, Italy. London Olympics bronzemedallist Yogeshwar won the gold medal in the 65kg category while two-time Olympic medallist Sushil won the silver in the 74kg division. This was a strong performance by the Olympic Gold Quest-backed wrestlers in their first competitive tournament post the 2012 London Olympics. With just over 50 days left for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the performance of both the wrestlers will be a huge boost to their confidence after a sabbatical to recuperate from injuries post the London Olympics. At the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Sushil will fight in the 74kg category whereas Yogeshwar will compete in the 65kg. Sushil had won a bronze medal at Beijing 2008 and a silver medal at London 2012 in the 66kg category while Yogeshwar had won a bronze medal at London 2012 in the 60kg division. OGQ had sent Sushil’s personal trainer to Italy along with him for the tournament.

Robin Uthappa hugs KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir who holds aloft the IPL trophy.

ANGALORE: He defied the law of averages with 10 consecutive 40-plus scores to guide Kolkata Knight Riders to their second IPL title and batsman Robin Uthappa says the feeling for him is surreal right now given that the team was not exactly a favourite to lift the trophy. Uthappa’s form played a crucial role as KKR lifted themselves from nearly the bottom of the points table to make the final where they defeated the season’s most consistent team — Kings XI Punjab — last night. With his 660 runs at an average of 44 and a strike-rate of 137.78, Uthappa went past the more talked about Glenn Maxwell and Dwayne Smith to end up with the Orange Cap. “This is absolutely stunning! The whole feeling is just so surreal. For me, personally, this is the fourth cup in a year and so, wow! It doesn’t get better than this, does it? This has been such an amazing ride,” Uthappa told the IPL’s official website. “We didn’t start off well, but there

was always the belief that we can get our campaign back on track if we just take it one game at a time, and that is exactly what we did. Even in the final, we knew that on this ground we can chase down any score. We only had to keep up with the run-rate and keep ourselves in the game. Literally, everybody chipped in,” he said. Uthappa said winning the IPL was one of targets he had set for himself this year. “I have set some goals for myself — a to-do list. But this year has been something else. The Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Irani Trophy and now the IPL, all in one year! I never thought I’ll be able to do that. It’s amazing. This is a tick in another box,” he said. Talking about his magnificent contribution to the team’s cause, Uthappa said it was good to play a crucial role. “I was very keen on making a meaningful contribution to the team’s cause and I am really happy to be able to do that, and many times, also carrying the team through from difficult situations.”

Gambhir is best among IPL captains: Akram B

ANGALORE: Attributing Kolkata Knight Riders’ second Indian Premier League title triumph to Gautam Gambhir’s leadership skills, the team’s bowling coach Wasim Akram said he is the best among all the IPL captains this season. “It means a lot to the team when the skipper is performing well. It adds to the security and the self belief. He has led his troops very well. I believe he was the best captain in this IPL,” Akram told the IPL’s official website. Kings XI Punjab rode on an unbeaten 115 from Wriddhiman Saha to post 199 for 4 in 20 overs but Gambhir was never unnerved and backed his bowlers. Akram was all

praise for his captain’s positivity. “...From the 11th to the 15th over of the KXIP innings, instead of looking for dot balls — which most captains do during that phase of the innings — he encouraged his bowlers to bowl for wickets. That aggressive mindset and the belief he puts in his players makes him the best captain in the tournament,” the Sultan of Swing added. KKR became only the second IPL team after Chennai Super Kings to win the tournament twice and Akram credits excellent teamwork for the outcome. “Our job is to keep things simple. We talk to the point and don’t have long meetings. We just try to keep them relaxed and

lend any assistance they need. That is the mantra that Trevor Bayliss and I go by. The credit goes to the captain and his team. We are here just to support them,” said Akram. As Yusuf Pathan enjoyed his third IPL triumph — his first coming in the inaugural season with Rajasthan Royals — Akram celebrated his second title win. Tell Akram that he has been lucky for the team and the humble leftarmer credits it to many more factors. “It feels out of this world, but this time we’re a lot calmer as well. The best thing about this team is that every member is enjoying each other’s success and company. The

foreign players and the Indian boys are really close, and that’s great to see as a mentor,” said Akram. Kolkata were lying at the bottom half of the table with four consecutive losses early in the tournament but rose like a phoenix to win nine games on the trot. The former Pakistan skipper said the mantra was to keep things simple. “Our job is to keep things simple. We talk to the point and don’t have long meetings. We just try to keep them relaxed and lend any assistance they need. That is the mantra that Trevor Bayliss and I go by. The credit goes to the captain and his team. We are here just to support them,” said Akram.

INDIA SAFE TO HOST PAKISTAN: LAXMAN SPORTS

By Neil Joshi

UMBAI: Cricketers on both sides of the border are hoping that the bilateral talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif would pave the way for a new chapter in cricketing ties for both countries. In a panel discussion during the CEAT cricket awards function, former Indian cricketers Syed Kirmani and VVS Laxman professed the need for resumption of cricketing ties to bring back normalcy in the relations of both the countries. Kirmani, however, said that he preferred to play at a neutral stage. “The best thing to start the bilateral relations is to have India-Pakistan play at a neutral place, to start with. I think that would be the best idea to go about to having a series with Pakistan,” said Kirmani, who was part of the 1983 World Cup winning team. However, stylish Hyderabadi batsman VVS Laxman said that the previous one-day international series played between the countries in 2012-2013, was played in a peaceful environment. “When Pakistan came for three one-dayers and two T20s, the crowds really loved it. It is like the Ashes and everyone looks forward to the Ashes and the England and Australia rivalry which is a traditional rivalry. I think it on par with the Ashes. I don’t see any problem

I know for a fact that since the attack that happened on Sri Lankan cricket team, a lot of players are apprehensive of going there,” said Laxman. However, Kirmani said having the series at a neutral venue would be an opportunity to promote the game. “It will give an opportunity to the countries where the Asian Cricket Council is trying to promote cricket. It will be a wonderful opportunity for those Asian countries to see the top teams play each other and it will be a good source of inspiration,” he said. Former Pakistani cricketer turned commentator, Rameez Raja who is seen more

he likes of Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka may not be seen on the backs of as many fans' England shirts as Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard in Brazil, but considering the crucial role they have played in booking their spot at the FIFA World Cup, they arguably deserve to. Roy Hodgson's side made it through European qualification with the joint tightest defence on the continent, conceding just four goals in the process of topping Group H, and now Chelsea regular Cahill is feeling he is no longer seen as an unexpected face at the top table in world football. “I feel a lot more experienced,” he said following the 3-0 warm-up win over Peru on Friday. “Since I've come to Chelsea I've enjoyed it, it's gone really well for me, and I can't get wait to get started in my first major competition with England, which will be very exciting,” said the former Bolton Wanderers man. He is now sizing up two final preparation games against fellow World Cup

participants Ecuador and Honduras in Miami, USA, before the squad make a beeline for Brazil, where they will meet opening Group D opponents Italy in Manaus on 14 June. One of the key reasons for England's miserly defence is the partnership he has formed with fellow centre-back Phil Jagielka since Hodgson took over, which has seen the Three Lions yet to register a defeat when they've both been on the field. “We have a good understanding, it's come from playing a few games together, as it always does,” Cahill reflected. “You don't all of a sudden hit it off with someone, but I feel we hit it off quite quickly and there's definitely an understanding in each other's game. “We've got exciting attacking players, so everyone pays their money to go and watch players take players on, do what Sturridge did and whip one into the top corner from 25 yards, that's what people like to see. But we go about our business quietly at the back, work hard to keep goals out,” he said.

Rossi omitted from Prandelli’s Italy squad F

iorentina striker Giuseppe Rossi was the major absentee when Italy coach Cesare Prandelli named his 23-man FIFA World Cup squad on Sunday. Rossi's exclusion was perhaps not a huge surprise as he missed four months of the season due to injury and did not have enough time to rediscover his form and fitness to convince Prandelli of his worth. Another missing from the list was AC Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo, who suffered a broken leg against Republic of Ireland. Italy squad Goalkeepers:Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Salvatore Sirigu (Paris Saint-Germain), Mattia Perin (Genoa); Defenders: Ignazio Abate (AC Milan), Andrea Barzagli (Juventus), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Matteo Darmian (Torino), Mattia De Sciglio (AC Milan), Gabriel Paletta (Parma); Midfielders: Alberto Aquilani (Fiorentina), Antonio Candreva

Israel beats World Cup-bound Honduras F

10 days to go

S

pain’s triumph at South Africa 2010 tipped the historical FIFA World Cup balance in favour of Europe, who go into Brazil 2014 with a 10-9 lead over South America. Italy have been the old continent’s most successful team with four world titles, followed by Germany on three and England, France and Spain with one apiece. South America’s haul, meanwhile, is dominated by Brazil’s record five crowns, with Argentina and Uruguay each having contributed two.

IFA World Cup bound Honduras suffered a second deflating friendly defeat in four days on Sunday as they were beaten 4-2 by Israel. Honduras' defense struggled all night and Israel made the most of the openings they were offered. Eran Zahavi grabbed the first goal for the Israelis, his 30-yard shot sailing past the outstretched hands of Honduras goalkeeper Denis Escobar for a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Honduras manager Luis Fernando Suarez made four changes at half-time seeking to turn things around. Roger Espinoza woke Los Catrachos with a 47th minute equalizer. However, the good work was undone in the 52nd when Tal Ben Haim had an effort on goal that Escobar appeared to have a bead on, only for Honduran second-half substitute Maynor Figueroa to redirect the shot across the line to make it 21 Israel.

Israel furthered Honduras' misery in the 60th minute and Zahavi was again in the thick of it. He again found room in the middle of Honduras' defense again and bounced a shot off the post. Omer

Damari was on hand to clean it up and give Israel a 3-1 lead. In the 74th, Figueroa surrendered too much space to Gil Vermouth and the Hapoel Tel Aviv midfielder stung the far post to make it 4-1.

Ronaldo looks to avoid Ballon d’Or curse P

ARIS:When Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded last year's Ballon d'Or in recognition of his dazzling achievements over the course of 2013 he naturally had plenty of reason to celebrate although one could forgive him for feeling apprehensive about his country's hopes at the World Cup in Brazil. Portugal will go the tournament as dark horses heavily reliant on their captain and talisman Ronaldo, who will need to defy the odds if he is to avoid becoming another footnote in a cautionary tale. Since the inception of the Ballon d'Or, in 1956 to recognise Europe, and then latterly, the world's most outstanding player each year, of the 14 players in possession of the prize heading into a World Cup none have achieved ultimate success on the global stage. Granted the facts are skewed to an extent given only European players were eligible for the prize prior to 1995, ruling out the likes of three-time World Cup winner Pele and Diego Maradona, who was central to Argentina's 1986 triumph, but that still leaves some of the game's most decorated players who have fallen short. Take Barcelona star Lionel Messi, who won the first of his four consecutive Ballon d'Or awards in 2009. An Argentina side with an embarrassment of attacking riches breezed through to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa despite Messi not contributing a single goal. However, when they needed him most he was unable to deliver as Maradona's shellshocked Argentine team were ruthlessly torn apart by Germany 4-0 in the last eight. That provided merely just the latest chapter of a World Cup campaign ending in disappointment for the world's leading player, a story that dates back to 1957 Ballon d'Or recipient and Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano. For Argentine-born Di Stefano, who acquired Spanish citizenship in time for the 1958 qualifiers despite previously representing his homeland as well as Colombia, his adopted nation fell short in their quest to reach the finals leaving one of the world's greatest players to ultimately finish his career without ever appearing at the World Cup.
