“Munde’s contribution to the state was vast and varied. He was a Lok Nayak,” said Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, adding, “the sudden and untimely demise of Gopinath Munde barely one week after becoming the Union Minister for Rural Development has caused deep anguish and sorrow to the people of Maharashtra. He was one of the most charismatic leaders who had the potential to provide leadership to the state and assume even higher responsibilities at the national level.” And that’s the belief almost everybody including politicians across the spectrum hold, as the the mortal remains of this leader of the masses is put to rest today. Alas! Maharashtra may not see another one like him for a long time to come.

Even before he was to arrive, enthusiastic party workers from his native Beed armed with sweets, garlands and firecrackers made a beeline for his Purna residence in Worli early in the morning. When a handful of media persons who had upon receiving the news arrived at the residence, the party workers could not believe their ears that their Munde Saheb was no more.

18-year-old Aniket Wagle beat the odds when he scored a whopping 68 per cent with the help of the people around him By A Staff Reporter
A
t Adya Akshar special school in Andheri has been up in jubilation these days. Aniket Wagle, now 18 years old, is a student of the school with cerebral palsy. He has a problem speaking, expressing himself and has limited control over the movement of his limbs. But his motivation, confidence and hard work have made it possible for him to achieve 68 per cent in the HSC examinations. “This success is the result of team work”, says Principal Sonali Gomes. There is also his teacher,Vidya Parad, who guided him, not only in his studies but also when he had emotional setbacks. His octogenarian grandparents and his parents were the rocks that gave him the courage to continue when he seemed bereft of hope. Adya Akshar special school has the vision to help many more differently-abled children like Aniket who has become a shining example for students and parents in a similar situation. And it's not over. The goal, says the principal, is to persuade him towards higher education and exploring the possibility of living an independent life.

he tragedy that has befallen three-year-old Samruddhi Nakti, who lost her mother in the Diva-Sawantwadi railway accident and underwent an amputation, has touched the hearts of people, not only in the city and country, but also across the globe. Close to 300 people have extended financial help to Samruddhi and more than Rs.15 lakh has been collected since May 9, informed doctors at Sion Hospital where Samruddhi is admitted. “Many people have come forward to help Samruddhi in some way or the other. This shows that despite having problems of their own, people are ready to help.” About 153 people have sent across cash and cheques to help Samruddhi, and there have been 124 wire transfers. “Donations have come in not Samruddhi enjoying her afternoon nap with her favourite stuffed toy at Sion Hospital only from across the country but also from abroad. IIT-B to develop tool for Guj power utility By A Staff Reporter
I The safest ever constituency for you sir! If you contest the assembly election from here, you can surely save your deposit.
IT-Bombay will develop analytics to provide Gujarat Electricity Transmission Corporation (Getco) with real time load data, which will help avoid a repeat of the major power breakdown of July 2012. The analytics will help Gujarat maintain stable operations in the event of small disturbances, reports PTI. “Dynamic stability analysis is necessary mainly because the grid
is integrated. Any disturbance in one region can result in blackout in the other grid area as well,” Getco Managing Director Surinder Negi told reporters yesterday. He said IIT-Bombay is developing a system of protection that will provide real-time data to the load centre, which can then take emergency control action in case of disturbances. The state will also set up 29 phasor measuring units (PMUs) on
the grid, across the state that will get the accurate time-stamped voltage and current information through the analytics. “PMUs will get the information through the system protection that will be passed on to the state load dispatch centre, which can take immediate action in case of any emergency,” he said. IIT-Bombay is also working with Power Grid for a similar system protection to prevent power outages in case of
over-drawl of electricity. On July 30, 2012, the country had faced its worst-ever power outage after three of its regional grids – Northern, Eastern and Northeastern – collapsed, leaving millions of people without electricity for several hours. An estimated 32-gW of generating capacity was taken offline in the outage. Electricity supply was restored in the affected locations by August 1, 2012

Anjali Damania of the Aam Aadmi Party, bête noir to the BJP’s Nitin Gadkari in Nagpur, may be down, but neither she nor the party are out. In conversation with Carol Andrade
T
here is a dustbin involved in the directions to the well-appointed home of Aam Aadmi Party Maharashtra unit convenor, anti-corruption activist and politician at Santacruz’s 6th lane. The dustbin is at the start of the lane, on the side of the municipal hospital, and is an unprepossessing sight. But if you are Anjali Damania, you make it into a joke and say it very fast, like this, “Kachrekedabbekebajoomeinjhadoowali”. Then you laugh. Lately, Anjali (45) has been smiling again, though there was a time last year when she found herself slipping into depression with the burden of the task she and others in the India
Against Corruption movement had undertaken. The constant travelling, guilt over what she thought of as neglect of her family, the sheer physical toll that the fight was taking on her, the prospect of fighting political heavyweights entrenched in the system would daunt anyone. At home on Tuesday, she sat in her marble-floored living room and asked, “Look around. I have everything I want and need. Why the hell should I get into all this? I am not interested in politics, I am not interested in position. I never knew Gadkari before I became involved in this battle against the evil of corruption. Even when I went to see him (and I did not go alone), believing that I would get help in my efforts, why did he have to say what he did?” For those who have come in only now on the issue, Anjali, who is a pathologist by profession, had gone to him to ask him to pursue massive cases of corruption unearthed by her. Brought up by parents who subscribed to RSS ideology, she was sure she would receive the help she needed. Her bitterness and disillusionment were complete, however, when Gadkari allegedly refused, explaining that he was in business with some people she was up against. “If he hadn’t said what he did, I would not have plunged so wholeheartedly into this movement,” she says now. “So it was destiny, and I am being pushed into doing whatever I am required to do.” She polled 69,081 votes in her battle against Nitin Gadkari for the Nagpur seat that had been held for seven terms by Vilas Muttemwar of the Congress, a savaging that left her stunned and her volunteers upset and dejected. “Not just my volunteers,” she is quick to add. “Party volunteers across the country are upset at the numbers. Except of course for Punjab. But the numbers we secured cannot be explained, except in part
by the Modi wave.” It was there all right, and like many members of her party, Anjali is convinced that the media helped. Not to mention the huge amounts of money that changed hands, she says. “Think of it,” she says, sitting with a carefully maintained file of around 25 newspapers, Marathi, English and Hindi, that she collected. “The day it was declared that I would be fighting against Gadkari on February 16, the coverage was excellent and it went on right till the first week of March. And then, inexplicably, it dropped to almost nothing and in the last ten days before April 10, when we went to the polls, there
“Look around. I have everything I want and need. Why the hell should I get into all this? I am not interested in politics, I am not interested in position. I never knew Gadkari before I became involved in this battle against the evil of corruption.”
was nothing. “Now look at these massive advertisements by Gadkari on April 8, 9 and even 10. Who else stood a chance? And why is it that the papers seemed to have absolutely no space for us? We did not even figure in the news. Why were we completely blacked out?” Anjali also points to another “curiosity” vis a vis the local media, that she noticed. She says that she called up all the editors to request them to
carry some of their news towards the end. There was no response. “What troubled me even more was the way they seemed to black us out. Every time we issued a press release, it was in hard and soft copy formats. We even went to the extent of sending them out through the local Press Club, paying Rs.200 per release. Still nothing.” And her suspicions crystallised when even a special procession they held, with volunteers stretching into a two km line, was ignored. Yet when she went to file her nomination forms on March 25, accompanied by just five people, the newspapers went to town, contrasting the tiny group with the big leaders who were sometimes accompanied by a thousand people! “It was a sell-out,” she says quietly. And yet, she has learned enough not to let the whole experience weight her down. Her father-in-law was there, campaigning with her, her husband Anish arrived as well, taking time off from his “day job” as head of securities at IDFC to help her. Her campaign cost Rs.17 lakh, a pitifully small amount in comparison with the vast sums that the big guns threw around.
from the experience? For one, she’s not going to participate in any format pushed by the electronic media, whether a debate or a panel discussion. She talked with bemusement about appearing on a panel for IBN7 last week, and being completely shaken when the anchor suddenly and without reason seemed to lose his temper with her, using works like arajakta (mobocracy) and “stuntbaji” to describe the party’s Delhi decisions. One moment, he seemed completely normal and we were just talking. The next moment he seemed to change, as if he had remembered directions given by someone,” she says grimly. So the electronic media might be out, but her work goes on, including for her family. But the guilt is plain as she talks about her son getting 92 per cent for his HSC, though she had been away for the past three months and more on party work. “Even now, my family will have to wait,” she adds. “With the Vidhan Sabha elections almost upon us, there are meetings to attend, decisions to be taken.” Currently, she has been attending meetings in Thane and Mumbai, “We fought the good fight,” says chintan shibbirs aimed at getting Anjali. “And we lost. We kept telling feedback from members about what the EC about irregularities and bla- they had done wrong and what they tant flouting of rules. We got hold of could do differently. Citizen saves a 3-week-old puppy TV crime series producer calls Goregaon fire brigade and rescues the pup By Zuber Ansari
A
40 year-old producer of a television crime series turned out to be saviour of a three-week-old puppy which was stuck inside a manhole for three days in Oshiwara. The incident happened at Indra Dasharn Cross Road where the puppy was stuck in the gutter and was barking since Thursday, but no one came to help him. Finally producer Anirandum Bhattacharya, owner of a production house which makes crime series saved the puppy by calling the fire brigade. “On Saturday I heard a dog barking inside the gutter, and was told that the pup was stuck in the gutter since past two days. I called various animal rescue organisations
but to no avail as it was late night and the officers of the organisations informed me that they cannot come to the spot since it is far away. Next morning the pup's barking had become weak; I then called the Goregaon fire brigade and the fire brigade personnel reached the place in 15 minutes, and rescued the puppy,” said Bhattacharya. “Though it took almost two hours to rescue the puppy, the firemen worked selflessly. I had called around 18 people including various animal organisations but finally help came from the Goregaon fire brigade. The puppy is now at my home and am taking good care of it,” Bhattacharya added. Officers from the Goregaon fire brigade said, ''A puppy was inside the gutter from Thursday, we reached on Sunday early morning with a team of around six fire fighters and rescued the tiny animal.”

The residents said that new facts had emerged through Right to Information (RTI) queries made from the BMC about its plans to regularise the illegal flats earlier. Their plea in court was for directions to the BMC to adhere to their decisions of regularising the construction as revealed from the letters dated July 3, 1986 and minutes of meeting dated July 23, 1985. An alternate demand raised by the residents was to have the matter remanded to the Bombay High Court for fresh hearing on the basis of new facts procured under RTI in the interest of justice.

aharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Tuesday condoled the death of Union Minister Gopinath Munde and described him as an 'outstanding' politician. "I had friendly relations with him (Gopinath Munde) from a long time. It feels very bad that an outstanding politician like him expired so suddenly," Thackeray told PTI. "As far as Gopinath Munde as an individual is concerned, it is a loss to the politics of Maharashtra," he said. Thackeray said it was unfortunate that the senior BJP leader expired at a time when he got a big responsibility. "His career had started once again after 10 years. He got a big portfolio as a Union minister (at the Centre) and he expired so suddenly. It was very unfortunate," Thackeray added. Thackeray also extended condolences to the family of Munde on behalf of his party and family.

Speaking for his own family, barring his elder brother Panditanna and estranged nephew NCP MLC Dhananjay Munde, the other two brothers Manikrao and Venkatesh departed before him. As the news reached Beed and his native birthplace Nathra near Parli, crowds of ardent supporters were seen wailing at street corners and at Munde's Parli town office. There was complete bandh across all the major towns and cities in Beed district as shopkeepers downed their shutters. The victory celebration venue in Parli turned into a scene of mourning.

Shiv Sena shocked, says M’rashtra has suffered an irreparable loss! By A Staff Reporter
S
hiv Sena has expressed shock over the death of Union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde in a road accident in Delhi this morning, saying Maharashtra has suffered an irreparable loss in the BJP leader's death. "In the new regime, he was the top most leader from the state in Delhi. Munde was a grassroot leader and was the most popular. We never saw him losing his temper and he was always found in the midst of party workers. It is not just the Sena-BJP which has lost a towering leader, but Maharashtra has also faced an irreparable loss," Shiv Sena MP and spokesman Sanjay Raut told PTI. He was a leader who was proud of Maharashtra and its "asmita". "Mundeji had a very warm and affectionate relationship with the Shiv Sena leadership. He worked hard to get new allies in the SenaBJP combine and made inroads in the Congress-NCP stronghold of western Maharashtra in the recent
Lok Sabha polls," Raut said. Munde, 64, was named by the BJP to lead the party campaign in the state. "But fate willed otherwise. Mundeji's passing away is not just a loss to the Shiv Sena-BJP, but also to Maharashtra," Raut said. Senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai said, "Munde, after having established his leadership credentials in Maharashtra, had gotten a chance to show his talent at the national level. However, it is shocking that his political stint has been cut short in such a tragic manner." Just as BJP leader late Pramod Mahajan was considered an architect of the Sena-BJP alliance, Munde was the architect of the 'Mahayuti' (grand alliance), bringing allies like Raju Shetty of Swabhimani Shetkari Sangathana, Mahadev Jankar of Rashtriya Samaj Paksha and Ramdad Athavale of RPI(A) into the saffron fold, Desai said. Munde was always positive and reassuring in times of adversity and he will be greatly missed, he added.

G
opinath Pandurang Munde, the OBC face of BJP in Maharashtra, was all set to spearhead the party's campaign to wrest power from CongressNCP combine in the upcoming Assembly polls in the state but fate willed otherwise. Inducted into the Union Cabinet for the first time a week ago, the 64-year-old Rural Development Minister, who died on Tuesday following a road accident in New Delhi, was a five-time MLA and had always harboured the ambition of becoming first BJP Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
OBITUARY Enthused by the landslide victory of the Sena-BJP alliance in the Lok Sabha elections, Munde, a former Deputy CM of Maharashtra, started nursing hopes of staking a claim to the chief ministership that did not go well with Shiv Sena. In an oblique rejection, the Shiv Sena had on Monday said that its leader Uddhav Thackeray would be the chief ministerial candidate under the agreement that Narendra Modi would be the Prime Minister and the chief ministership would go to Sena. A known detractor of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Munde was credited with neutralising the Maratha politician's influence to such an extent that the Sena-BJP combine came to power in the 1995 Assembly polls and he became the Deputy Chief Minister. Brother-in-law of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, Munde hails from a poor family in the backward Marathwada region and was

brought into politics by the late BJP leader Vasantrao Bhagwat, who also groomed several others including Pramod Mahajan. Prime Minister Modi along with the BJP leadership had handpicked Munde to lead the party's campaign in the state where assembly polls are due in four months. Munde, who was the Deputy Leader of Opposition in 15th Lok Sabha, won the Lok Sabha polls this time despite Pawar making the Beed seat a prestige issue. He also served as general secretary of the party at the national level and as Chairman of the Committee on Chemicals and Fertilisers in the outgoing Lok Sabha. Born on December 12, 1949, and hailing from Nathra village in Beed district, Munde was member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for five terms, 1980-1985, 1990-2009. He was born to Pandurang Munde and Limbabai Munde in a middle class Vanjari (caste) farmer's family. He is survived by wife and three daughters -- Pankaja, Pritam and Yashashri. Pankaja Palave represents the Parli Assembly seat in Beed district. The most prominent leader of the party in Maharashtra for over two decades along with his late brother-in-law Pramod Mahajan, Munde was the architect of the social engineering formula by cobbling up the opposition 'Mahayuti' alliance which got 42 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the recent Lok Sabha polls. Munde was the Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during 1992-1995. He donned various roles in Maha-

y a tragic coincidence, the number 3 appears ominous for the Munde-Mahajan family. With the untimely demise of Union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde in a car accident in New Delhi on Tuesday, three of the family members and one close aide of the two BJP leaders have met tragic deaths on the third day of a month. The tragic trail unfolded with the death of Munde's brother-in-law Pramod Mahajan. It was on May 3, 2006 that Pramod died in a Mumbai hospital after prolonged attempts by a battery of doctors to revive him from bullet injuries failed, reports PTI. Pramod struggled for his life for 13 days after he was shot at by his estranged elder brother Pravin. Pravin shot his younger brother with his licensed .32 pistol inside the latter's apartment in Mumbai on April 22, 2006 following a dispute. Four bullets were fired. The first missed Pramod, but the other three were lodged in his liver and pancreas, damaging several internal organs. Pravin was sentenced to life in prison by a trial court in

fatal once again on March 3, 2010 when Pravin Mahajan passed away in a Thane hospital after failing to respond to weeks of treatment following a brain haemorrhage. Munde too died in a hospital on the third day of this month apparently of shock and cardiac arrest suffered during the accident.

Ponder awhile… “In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity.” — Hunter S. Thompson
In UP, a rape a day and monstrous murder T
O prove that crimes are taking place not just in Uttar Pradesh but also in BJPruled states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav stated that in Madhya Pradesh a chain of a member of the Chief Minister's family was snatched! There is no comparison between the crimes that are taking place in Uttar Pradesh and other states. In Uttar Pradesh, two minors aged 12 and 14 were raped by three or four men and hanged from a tree. Can there be any other news more ghastly than this? The police, who apparently were involved, refused to register a FIR for several hours. The whole nation was shocked by the incident. That someone could conduct a monstrous crime so openly reveals the grave law and order situation in UP. In another crime, after a combined rape, acid was forced into the mouth of the victim and she was strangled to death. In another case, the girl was raped by several people and was burnt. In yet another case, the girl's face was smashed with a stone so she could not be identified. The latest incident occurred recently; the girl who resisted a molestation attempt by three men was thrown out of the moving train. There is something wrong with the CM of Uttar Pradesh. Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh, reacting to Akhilesh Yadav's comment, has said it was ‘senseless’. Chain snatching is not a major crime. It is a fact it happens in all states. A rape a day and gruesome murder has been taking place in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav is blaming the media, saying it is giving a false picture. Meanwhile, the demand is growing that President's rule be imposed in Uttar Pradesh. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, perhaps, does not want to intervene because law and order is a state subject. If, however, the situation in UP continues to be gruesome, perhaps it is necessary he should do some rethinking.

ELHI-based think tank Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF) has acquired a huge profile in the Narendra Modi government with the new prime minister picking two top officials for his PMO from there. Both Principal Secretary Nripendra Misra and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval were members of the VIF’s executive council till recently. Apparently, Modi has been in close contact with the foundation for some time and is supposed to be very impressed with the work it has been doing. It has been supplying him and other BJP leaders regularly with policy papers on a wide range of issues. In fact, Modi is reported to have read through a list of talking points prepared by Doval for the meeting with Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif. Housed in an impressive building in Delhi’s elite Chanakyapuri area, VIF is pitched as the Indian Right’s counter to the domination of the Left in academic and research institutions. It aims to provide a platform for intellectuals and thinkers who are not Left leaning. Interestingly, the Foundation was funded initially by a media baron close to the RSS and BJP. Modi is not the first PM to have turned to a think tank to fill senior positions in his PMO. Manmohan Singh too picked his principal secretary TKA Nair from the Chandigarhbased think tank, Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development. Singh and Nair were both on the Centre’s governing council and its executive vice chairman Rashpal Malhotra wielded considerable influence in Singh’s PMO in the early years. Malhotra is thought to have had a hand in the appointment of controversial Chief Vigilance Commissioner P.J. Thomas who had to step down following a rap from the Supreme Court because he was named in an old CBI case. BJP circles are wondering how many more senior positions in the new government will be filled by recruits from VIF which boasts of an impressive list of retired IAS, Foreign Service and defence officers. Among those waiting in the wings for possible appointments are former RAW chief C.D. Sahay, former urban development secretary Anil Baijal, former ambassador to Russia Prabhat Shukla and former vice chief of air staff, Air Marshal (retd.) S.G. Inamdar.

formation of a four-member policy committee consisting of himself and three top ministers in his government. The three are home minister Rajnath Singh, finance minister Arun Jaitley and transport minister Nitin Gadkari. The group of four had its first meeting within a couple of days of the election results when Modi called Rajnath, Jaitley and Gadkari to Gandhinagar for consultations on his cabinet. Since then, it has met three more times, two of which were after the swearingin ceremony. It is an unofficial body but BJP circles see it as a powerhouse. Apparently, all matters connected to the government and party are discussed here, much like the core committee served as the chief sounding board during the Manmohan Singh government’s tenure.

N POWER TALK Arati R. The secret of God can be studied in His nature T
o the view of a Sufi this universe is nothing but a manifestation of the divine Being, and this divine manifestation is called in Sufi terms Nur-Zahur. The supreme God, From His existence as the single and only Being, has, so to speak, journeyed as far as He could towards the surface. Through His activity and His will behind it, He has manifested on the surface, from the heavens He has descended upon earth. From the most unconscious state of existence, blind, unaware of His being, as is the rock, He has gradually awakened to consciousness of the surroundings on the surface. Also in the Quran, one finds the idea that the world was created out of darkness. The gradual progress of the journey brings the Inner Being to the condition of a plant, flower and fruit, then to the state of worm, germ, and animal, until He manifests as man, Ashraf al-Makhluqat, the ruler of this universe and the controller of the heavens. In man He reaches the final goal of His destiny, when He realizes Himself as the whole being, which He has not done hithreto. God has made in His image, as is said in the Bible. Hazrat Ali says, ‘The secret of God can be studied in His nature.’ Every traveler on foot as a rule lights his torch at the approach of night. So also this heavenly traveler. Seeing
cause it was widely expected that the portfolio would go to someone with an RSS background because of the Sangh’s well-known interest in education. Irani has no previous affiliation to the RSS. Naturally, there is much heart burning in the BJP over the special favour shown to her. But the former soap queen has proved that she has a shrewd political brain ticking inside her head. One of her first moves was to meet with RSS leaders. They obviously discussed the Sangh’s agenda for education because when Irani met with ministry officials later, one of the tasks she set them was to prepare a brief on how vedic studies could be strengthened. BJP circles are waiting to see who Irani appoints as advisors in the ministry. That will give a clue to the extent to which she, under Modi’s tutelage, will allow RSS involvement in the education sector.
darkness overwhelming Him in the lower spheres on His path, He lights a torch. It is the light of this torch, which is called in the Quran, Nur-e Mohammadi, that has guided Him to the surface, whence He could clearly discern and find His path back. To the knower’s eye, this Nur, this light, is the real Mohammad. This light is it which has beamed forth through all the Masters of humanity and is known as the Light of Guidance.
MATTER & SPIRIT It is the nature of every luminous object to shed light all around, and yet a particular beam of light coming forth from it gibes more illumination than light spread all around. This may be seen in the light of the sun. The souls, which happen to be in the zone of the beam of the Light of Guidance, whether by intention or accident, have been known to the world as the chosen ones of God. They saw God sooner, they heard Him more quickly than others, and they have been nearer to Him than others. They may be called the elect of God as it is said in the Song to the Soul of the Saint: Before the righteous soul,
OW that finance minister Arun Jaitley has disclosed that he will shed his additional charge of defence in the cabinet expansion expected shortly, BJP circles are in a tizzy wondering who the new defence minister will be. Apparently, transport minister Nitin Gadkari is an interested party. It seems he is quite disappointed with his portfolio and has been letting it be known to all and sundry in the BJP that he had actually been offered the defence portfolio but had declined it in the hope that Modi would implement a proposal to club all the infrastructure ministries together into one omnibus ministry. The proposal was that railway, surface transport, civil aviation and shipping would be merged into a mega ministry with a powerful minister at the helm. But when the portfolios were announced, Gadkari found that he had a truncated ministry consisting of surface transport and shipping. Civil aviation went to the TDP while railway was given to BJP MP from Karnataka Sadanand Gowda. Apparently, Vajpayee too had wanted to merge all the infrastructure ministries together but was not able to do so because of political compulsions to accommodate party MPs and allies alike. Clearly, Modi has similar compulsions. Gadkari seems to be kicking himself for not accepting the defence portfolio and is hoping that it will be offered to him again when Modi expands his cabinet.
Servant of God, even the angels bend; His lotus feet the long-desired goal Where weary pilgrims find their journey’s end In pardon for their sin. Thus, as the saint God comes, and man is healed, And fortunate that happy one, within Whose heart the mystic vision is revealed. All souls since the creation of man who have been in this light have been Masters, coming one after the other connected by the link of the one current which first springs from the innermost being an broadens and expands in this universe. The saints, sages, and mystics, who fare forth from the highest spheres, are attracted by this light, and they seek refuge in it from life’s dark clouds. The invisible ones, who floated in this light even before man was created, are the angels. The divine light has shone upon the mineral and vegetable kingdoms; and there too it has shown its phenomena, although its full radiance has been reached only in man. It can be seen in the developed intelligence, and this can be observed in the cosmic system as well as in the mineral and vegetable kingdoms. It is the light of the sun, which shines upon the moon and the planets; each star is but a reflection of the same light; thus the sun alone illuminates the whole cosmic system. —Hazrat Inayat Khan

IPL final Punjab could not cope with the clever batting by the Kolkota Knight Riders, who achieved a calculated 3-wicket win in the cliffhanger tie. King's XI Punjab missed the bus in the penultimate over and that proved very costly. With key bowler Johnson bowling and spinner Sunil Narine batting, it was an easy prey as the ball was beaten repeatedly but could not remove the bail or the stumps with a well directed yorker. Instead a single was conceded and the last ball saw a short pitched ball outside the leg stump to be smacked for a six and the equation comes to 5 in the last over and that was easily achieved with Piyush Chawla back in the — Lakshman Sundar, Vashi strike. Only harsh laws will deter rapists APROPOS 'Rape issue worsens' (ADC, June 2), post Nirbhaya gang rape of Dec, 16, 2012 in the capital, this Badaun rape in UP is equally a monstrous and dastardly act by the accused as in this case the rapists hung the victims on the trees. It is furthermore hugely agonising and frustrating to learn that even the cops had a supporting role in this gruelling act. As very rightly pointed out by this edit piece that incorporating and modifying the laws has not brought out any respite to this devastating and condemned act at all. I strongly feel that these culprits need to be not only caught but given stringent punishment like bobbitising or the kind of punishment generally handed down to these types of criminals in the middle eastern countries which might cause a deadly fear in the minds of these demons. — Bikram Banerjea, via e-mail
IT is very tragic that after the 'Nirbhaya' rape another gang rape has taken place in Uttar Pradesh which has shocked the Nation's conscience and evoked public anger at the brutality of the crime. In spite of the late Justice Verma's recommendations and the then Government promulgating a law to combat such crimes, rape incidents are on the rise. The ADC has in its editorial focussed on this issue in a very sensitive manner whereas some other papers by their news reports have if one may say added salt to the parents' woes. The need of the hour is to provide more toilets for rural womenfolk near their homes so that they do not have to go far to answer the call of Nature and fall prey to the predators – be it wild animals

UTTAR Pradesh government under its chief minister have made a mess of the state with total collapse of law and order after the Badaum gang rape of two teenaged Dalit girls who were later hanged from a tree tree and no police FIR was filed against the accused which proves that the Central government under its prime minister Narendra Modi has become a mute spectator and does not have the guts to dismiss the UP government. I strongly feel that UP is sinking deeper into a quagmire of caste and gender violence with every passing day and the police is influenced by the ruling party leaders to make the state a jungle raj and inefficient working of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav who is nothing but useless CM the country has ever seen. — Bhagwan Thadani, via e-mail

The arrested accused has been identified as Suvidha Satish Sawant who was attached to the Old Customs House since many years. Libraries should take innovative steps to attract readers: Deodhar By A Staff Reporter
R
enowned technocrat and former advisor to late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Prabhakar S. Deodhar has called for libraries to work on innovative steps to increase footfall and inculcate reading habit among youths. Stating that the reading habit among youths was meagre, he said libraries should create a conducive atmosphere and cater to the needs of young minds. Deodhar was speaking at the 121st anniversary of the Thane Marathi Grantha Sangrahalya recently. He suggested setting up a display
shelf of all new arrivals and recent publications and a facility to scan through the books and read them. There is dire need to educate elders about the use of computers and this task could be done by libraries by organising classes for it, he said. The libraries should initiate steps to increase footfall, especially of the youths and developing reading habits in them, he stressed. Sangrahalaya's secretary Vidhyadhar Walavalkar informed that they were in the process of going in for an e-library and taking to cloud computing. Several thousands of books in electronic format would be made available to the readers at the library, he said.
Two workers suffocate to death in Virar By Suresh Golani

n a tragic incident, two workers who had ventured into a well to clean it were suffocated to death due to poisonous gases at a village in Virar on Tuesday afternoon. According to the police, the incident was reported from the Bavtewadi area in Virar (E). The deceased identified as Eknath Choudhary (21), a resident of Naigaon and Eknath Waade (35), were engaged by a private contractor to clean the well. Unaware of the formation of poisonous gases, Choudhary who
was the first to venture into the 40feet-deep well, apparently without any protective gear, fell unconscious and suffocated to death. As there was no word from him, Waade too jumped into the well and met with the same fate. Following information from locals, police and fire brigade personnel reached the spot and pulled out the bodies. While a case of accidental death has been registered in this context, the police are carrying out investigations to ascertain any type of negligence on the part of the contractor.

ith the rise of hackers and data breaches spanning companies and the government, there's a greater need to keep private and top-secret entropy safe from cyber attacks. That's where information security analysts come into the picture. A security analyst is accountable for maintaining the security and integrity of data. His main job is to examine the security measures of an organisation and find out how valuable they are. They are responsible for implementing training required to teach staff on proper security measures both offline and online, says Prof. Hemant Kumar Jain, teacher of Information Technology at ERA Business School (EBS), Delhi’s Industry anchored B-School (Emerging Management AICTE-CII Survey 2013).
SCOPE
Data has become the lifeblood of corporate liveliness. Any turnaround of cyber affluence can be responsible for the company’s reputation, or wipe out the company’s resources. Therefore, there is a high requirement for precisely schooled and certified security analysts even in the time of economic slowdown. The Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates network systems and data communications analyst positions to spring up at a high rate in the coming years. The federal government, which adjoins an exces-

sive amount of sensitive data, is the drawing card in security professional hiring. Security is very important in high-profile technology companies and large enterprise business environments. As terrorism continues to increase, so does the requirement for security analysts in companies.
SKILLS
People who want to work in this particular area need strong problem-solving and analytical skills and proper understanding of computer systems. Information security analysts must be familiar with security rules and principles. Apart from that the individual should also have the following qualities to move up the ladder in this particular profession. Serious Thinking: Using logic and reasoning to recognise the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or access to the problems. Active Listening: Giving full interest to what other people are saying, using time to understand the points being made, asking questions appropriately, and not interrupting at unfortunate times. Management Skills: Consider the relative costs and benefits of probable actions to choose the most appropriate one. Systems Analysis: Finding out how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the surroundings will affect outcomes. Continued on pg 14 «

ain Tera Hero starring Varun Dhawan seems to appear as David Dhawan's attempt to bring back the Govinda style of comedy with younger and able Varun Dhawan. Varun did a good job in the flick and one cannot deny he can act well. Ileana plays a sweet girl next door, with little scope to show her talent. Nargis on the other hand is pretty much in the movie only to spice up the glam quotient. She does not have an impressive role and comedy is definitely not her forte. The movie fails to please with the background music being the only saving grace. The script is weak, with funny bits here and there.

This platform will give students who are exploring an education prospect in Ireland an opportunity to interact with all 14 colleges through the 'Tweet-Up' platform. The students, in addition to interacting with these institutes, can also connect with representatives from Education in Ireland asking any queries on the scenario, and also with the Visa officer to better understand the application process. This is the first time that Ireland and representatives of Irish education would be accessible online in order to reach and clarify any doubts raised by students via Twitter.
On this occasion James Mackrill, Manager of Education in Ireland (Indian, China and Russia) said, “Education in Ireland held education fairs across India in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Pune in November 2013, followed in February 2014, through which we were able to connect with 950 Indian students interested in an Irish education. We have noticed that a number of them are in need of clarity from their institute of choice. Virtual tweet-up is an innovative new format to reach audiences. We decided to take our education fair online as we have seen a large number of interests coming
from the Indian market. In a world where people address time paucity by undertaking work digitally the real time responses will allow the students to make a decision just before planning to apply. We hope this will help them make an appropriate and informed choice for their respective futures,” he further added.

I
did my PDGBM (marketing), Masters in Mass Communication and Masters in Dramatics from Punjab University. It was a huge campus with the biggest grounds. In Chandigarh most buildings are the same colour: Brown. But my dramatics department was special. It had a circular building with an open air theatre and the most amazing acting floor. The place was vibrant and positive. I had a great desire to spend time there. The weather was cool and I always had a positive feeling entering the college premises. No, we were not ragged. It was the year a court had ordered strict punishments for ragging. But later, when I joined the department of theatre, everyone was asked to do weird things. Once I was made to drink a concoction of cold drink and ketchup. Another time I was asked to make faces and imitate Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. I was fortunate to have some of the finest professors in the field of theatre: Ms. Neelam Man Singh Chaudhary, Mr. Mahendra Sharma and G. Kumara Varma. The professors were encouraging. The teachers managed to influence the mind and habit. What a professor teaches remains with you forever. The words echo in your mind. Studies were fun, but that's because we were given great projects. Our professors focused more on practical exposure than classroom studies. The encouragement was important. We were given a lot of freedom to explore different avenues. I had a Vespa. And by the time I was in doing my postgraduation, I had bought a car with my own money. The roads used to be wide and clean. College was fun. It was right next to the girls' college and was the most happening spot in the city. So you can imagine that I was regular to classes. We were a bunch of nicely dressed young guys. It was great fun to go to college and meet so many people. It was a very cosmopolitan culture. Though I mixed up with people well, I have always had a very limited friends circle. Thanks to technology, in spite of being in different places, we touch base every day. There was one joint near the college which served awesome Aloo Ke Parathe and Samosas. Being a Punjabi I used to love it. I always wanted to stay in the hostel, but

being a local I wasn’t allowed. But since I was hell bent on it, during the last six months of my masters in dramatics, I stayed in the hostel, illegally of course, thanks to my friends who accommodated and hid me. Being in one of the most reputed institutes for acting, my class had only 12 students who were all selected from a large pool of applicants. We came from different parts of the country and knew we were privileged to be studying in that institute. Anupam Kher, Kiron Kher, Sunil Grover and many other prominent faces has studied there. Staying in hostel meant pranks at a drop of a hat. We had to be prepared for anything. And anything means anything. One of the most amazing pranks we played was on birthdays, at midnight. The birthday boy would be given a shower with cold water and then dragged to the garden where he would be immersed in mud, eggs, ketchup and any other slimy material we could lay our hands on. The next morning, the birthday boy would have to treat the same gang at a restaurant of their choice. College fun gives you a lot of memories. Live life king size. College days never come back. you more open vis-a-vis sharing and caring. One must have an open mind and a learning attitude. Education should always be given priority. It helps in the long run. In college once, we were asked to dress up like soldiers of the Mughal era and take out a parade till the student centre. At first it was embarrassing but later we started to enjoy it. This exercise helped me shed my inhibitions as an actor and gave me confidence. Education opens up your horizon and exposes you to experiences which will help you throughout your life. As they say, books are a person’s best friend. I say education is the most important tool to carve out a successful future. Education makes you evolve as a person. I am a sorted person. I am a qualified educated person, so people love and respect me for what I am. Education gives a better perspective towards everything. One can explore life better. The opportunities are plenty in this world but one needs to learn to use them.
(As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira)
Making classrooms interactive For many a person, the word ‘classroom’ evokes a mixed-bag of feelings. All those who attended school have a reservoir of stories and anecdotes which are strongly etched in memory. B.F. Skinner once said that ‘education is what survives when what has been learnt has been forgotten’. If that is our benchmark, where do our classrooms stand?
W
By Jophin Mathai, Director- Teacher Recruitment Service, Meliorate Consulting ith big class sizes and meeting deadlines of course completion, teachers have a real task on hand. Developing a strong and fruitful bond with students is difficult under such circumstances, but far from impossible. There are ways to make the class interestingly productive, lively and interactive. A well-designed classroom interaction tickles curiosity and helps in forming new ideas. Thus, the teacher and the student become co-creators of learning and knowledge.
Here are a few indicative methods to guide your class-time: Interaction and Engagement: The classroom need not be a premium space for a snore-fest! During a class, ask students for their opinions, ask them what they know, reach out to everyone (especially the back-benchers!) with something like “Don’t you find this interesting?” or “Do you feel this could be done differently?” All this shows you care about their opinions, and demand their attention. A genuine concern for students is always appreciated. Also, chances that you have encountered introverted students in your classroom are high. Make an extra effort to spend time and understand them - find ways to include them in discussions. Usually, the students who shy away or have a tendency to be reserved face problems as the more enthusiastic students demand the limelight and the silent ones become more inconspicuous. Devise ways to counter this and make the class more participative.
tion is accessible and freely available, questions such as these can be tackled and even discussed. Ask your students to research on a lesson or topic prior to class and then make them introduce the topic and make each one share their knowledge. Then a brainstorming session can be held where the students talk to each other and discuss ideas and even debate and cross-question each other. Setting the context and the historical background for topics in subjects like Mathematics will greatly stimulate interest and generate exciting discussions, also diminishing the fear factors wrongly associated with the subject.
Audio-Visuals and Trips A documentary, topic-related movies, field trips, visit to places like botanical gardens, museums, theatre plays, workshops, seminars, etc. give an enriching experience of the real world and qualifies the classroom activities. The teacher has to make sure that each student enjoys and makes the most of these aids and is engaged in understanding them.
« MENTOR’S DESK
Group Discussion: Logically dividing the lesson in parts and having different groups discuss and debate upon each part can make a long and dull chapter quite interesting. There can be plays and skits put up by the groups based on, say a history chapter, or the groups can prepare a quiz for the other group to see how much has been grasped in a subject like science. Research and brainstorming: Many a time, students do not find relevancy in what they study at school. At a time when informa-
Play Games: We are not talking football or cricket in the classroom. Skip usual lessons and play topic-based games occasionally. With school and extra coaching children hardly get time to have fun and so playing subject-based games is a great idea. You can play games like catch and passing the parcel; whoever has the ball or the parcel has to answer a question related to the lessons. A Rapid Fire would demand your students’ attention! Depending on your classroom size, you can keep a Rapid Fire round for students individually or in groups. Short questions and a small session right at the end of a post-recess lecture can keep your students alert and awake. The challenge for the teacher is to engage all the students in the classroom for such a method. Creating such simple games for the classroom can do wonders for your class and the way students perceive you as a teacher. Such games can also act as wonderful tools for revision of a topic and ease tensions as exam dates near! You know your class as no one else knows. Customising the above methods for your classroom will greatly facilitate you in your work and vocation as a teacher. May your classroom time be a rewarding experience!

A sport called Scrabble We love our sports, and by 'sports' we mean games like Cricket, Football, Badminton and Tennis. But there are many other sports, like 'Scrabble' which improve one’s vocabulary, that need to be promoted. Sherwin Rodrigues, winner of the Bayer National Scrabble Championship 2014, talks about the game and more

4-year-old Sherwin Rodrigues started playing Scrabble at the age of 10. His interest in the game and obvious talent has led him to participate in competitive Scrabble for the last 13 years. He has represented India at five consecutive World Scrabble Championships (WSC) and was ranked 9 out of 110 at the 2013 Scrabble Champions Tournament (erstwhile WSC) which was held in Prague in December 2013. Though he claimed that he wasn't expecting to win this year's Bayer's Scrabble Tournament since he hadn't enough time to prepare, his win came as no surprise to Scrabble watchers, as he has won many tournaments in the past. The Grand Finals of the Bayer National Scrabble Championship 2014 under the aegis of the Scrabble Association of India took place in Mumbai at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club on Sunday, June 1. The tournament spanned three days and witnessed Scrabble lovers from across the country fighting it out for the top honours. This year the Bayer National Scrabble Championship reached out to a huge number of participants across India. The youngest participant was 10 years old and oldest participant was 75 years old. Doctors, lawyers, IAS officers, chartered accountants, journalists, MBA students and homemakers competed for the coveted title. Rodrigues from Mumbai battled the competitors to emerge the winner followed by Kurain T.P. from Chennai. “learning your words well, not making silly mistakes and keeping a cool temperament throughout” to succeeding in this sport and going far in the game. But at a time when people are obsessed with the far more popular sports like Cricket and Tennis, and with children spending most of their free time busy in the virtual world or glued to the television, a game like scrabble can really encourage reading and improve one's vocabulary. Sadly this is a lesser known and played sport. He adds, “Unfortunately Scrabble isn’t as big as it should have been by now in India. Even though Bayer has been supporting Scrabble for the past few years, and the number of participants have been increasing steadily, Scrabble needs to gain more popularity. It would really help to have schools encourage Scrabble as an extracurricular activity as the game would benefit kids in many ways.” And the benefits are many. “Scrabble isn’t just about vocabulary and spellings. There’s a lot more to it. There’s a lot of strategic and analytical thinking involved and luck plays a very important role in Scrabble. A combination of all these factors makes Scrabble a fun game. Bayer has been very supportive over the past few years and has helped Scrabble grow in India. It would also be very beneficial to promote Scrabble in schools as it will definitely help in the holistic development of kids.” So do take inspiration from Rodrigues and try your hand at Scrabble.

THE WEDDING Y SHUTTERBUG « OFFBEAT CAREER
ears later, when you sit down to open your dusty wedding trunk, the one thing that makes you smile besides your wedding dress is that weighty album with a thousand glossy photos. The job of a wedding photographer then, is most crucial in any wedding ceremony. He captures memories that will live forever. Sourabh Das never intended on becoming a wedding photographer. He completed his engineering studies and became an IT professional and lecturer. However, his success in the corporate field was short lived when he was laid off during the recession period. It wasn’t long before he grabbed the reins of photography, where his casual pictures found genuine admiration. Sourabh soon bought himself a professional camera and did his first wedding shoot for a mere Rs.1500. A wedding photographer first meets the bride and groom to understand their needs. They then decide on the venue and theme for the wedding, giving the photographer time to plan the best shots. Every photographer must have a creative eye and must be visually imaginative. Most of the time the photographers may depend on candid moments during the ceremony. “A candid photograph,” says Sourabh, “Is a photograph that is captured without creating a posed appearance. This is achieved by avoiding prior preparation of the subject and by either surprising the subject or by not distracting the subject during the process of taking photos.” Today many photographers aim to master this side of photography to build on the surprise element. A known fact about the field of photography is the financial investment required. This could be with regards to equipment, acquiring post-production editing software and the course itself. “Your investment also depends upon the creative space required, perhaps in renting a studio or simply working on a freelance basis,” says Sourabh. The best part

about photography is that you could always take it up as a part-time job, all the while developing your skills and mastering those already learnt. Students of photography have a range of institutes to choose from in a city like Mumbai. There are diploma as well as certificate programs in photography. Shari Academy offers 1-month and 10month full time diploma courses in specialised photography like weddings and portraits. Besides the classroom coursework, it is always a good idea to intern with an established photographer. The next step for a photographer is to develop a portfolio and build his clientele. The pay at first may not be impressive but it is a profession that requires one to work their way up. Eventually, through word of mouth, your work will be recognised and you will be flooded with opportunities. Another way to get noticed is through the online space. Various online portals like Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram become a photographer’s arms to reach out to the public. Attending workshops and exhibitions helps improve your creative skill set and network base. Wedding photography is a world of its own, covering everything from pre-wed-
ding shots to post-event editing and album-making. Photographers have an edge over most if they have an added skill set of designing, editing and image enhancement. There are a variety of photo software like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom that help in post-production. A photographer then gets ready for Album picking and designing. The final result is what will get him his next project. While wedding photography is a seasonal affair, it is up to the photographer to branch out in event photography. Lean periods could be used to adapt one’s skills. A career in photography is almost compared to any entrepreneurial job where you are your own boss and where you direct the portion of profit or loss. “Any business takes lot of time to flourish,” says Sourabh. “You cannot reject a order because you want to go to a picnic, because rejecting one order means denying at least 10 prospective clients.” Wedding photographers may charge a sum of Rs.15,000 or Rs.30,000 per day depending on his/her experience. However, there is no fixed market rate and photographers are often judged by their quality of work. The competition in this field is undeniable so make your mark wherever you go.

Alia Bhatt has had a great start with a Karan Johar production and followed it up with hits including an unconventional one like Highway. She's cute and bubbly and has been the butt of jokes on Social media sites because of a goof up on Koffee with Karan. Said to be the new age Kareena Kapoor, we ask youngsters what they think of this sometimes 'blonde' Actress. Alia Bhatt is cute. I thought she was alright in Student of the Year and thought it was a great launchpad for the actress. Later I watched her in Highway and was amazed! Her acting was superb and so natural! Then I watched her in Two States and here too she played her character well. I was impressed and am a fan now. She took a brave step when she signed on for Highway, something that most other actresses wouldnt attempt at the start of their career —Albana Khatri Training I think she's a total blonde. She says the funniest things and has no inhibitions and is totally herself. I guess that's something I like about her too. She's not afraid to be herself! In terms of acting I haven't watched any of her movies except for Highway and I quite liked her in it. Quite a brave outing for a newcomer. I applaud her for that. —Divya Saha Adventure Sports
I'm not a fan. I find her to be quite irritating. There are many other actresses who have made their debut without a golden spoon in their mouth. Alia has had it easy and she's still super young. I don't think she deserves all this attention. The goof ups on television yes, because they were super funny! I think she's alright as an actress but still needs to prove her mettle. —Srilakshmi Kurup Educator

book which is read from a distance is a real pleasure whereas the same book which is read too close is a factor of irritation. The same goes with social networking. When used up to a limit it is a boon but when excessively used, it is nothing less than a disastrous medium. Let me explain how. On one hand, it turns the whole world into a close knit group, giving people the opportunity to stay in touch with long lost friends, relatives, classmates in a way you never would, thanks to Facebook. While on the other hand, people, youngsters, to be precise, expose too much of their personal information on sites like Facebook which in turn comes back to haunt them as someone could take the liberty of misusing the personal information, pictures, etc. The world of social networking which till today included sites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. has a new entrant i.e. BBM which is a the most widely used medium of social networking. During the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers took stock of various aspects of bilateral relations including political, economic, defence, security and people-to-people linkages and agreed to further strengthen them, official sources told PTI. EW DELHI: Exercising its right of superintendence over CBI, CVC has started scrutinizing documents related to allocation of all coal blocks to central and state public sector undertakings and private companies. The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), which was asked to give its opinion on closure reports filed by CBI in Preliminary Enquiries (PEs), has already submitted its findings on 25 such PEs. The apex court had sought the assistance of CVC in view of divergence of opinion between the investigating officer and superiors over their closure reports. The Commission has opposed closure of several of these PEs in their findings submitted to the Supreme Court, official sources told PTI. Besides giving opinion on these cases, the CVC has also started scrutinising other coal block allocation files to ascertain whether it has missed the eye of CBI. "We have received information and relevant documents related to remaining coal blocks from CBI. The Commission is scrutinizing them," an official associated with the probe said. According to the Coal Ministry, 195 coal blocks were allocated between 1993 and 2011. Pics: PTI

he expanding retail footprint of global brands in India has been a major growth driver of retail real estate in the country. In an effort to map and analyze the spread of international retailers, CBRE undertook a research study of more than 300 prominent global retailers to identify operating trends, expansion strategies, and extent of penetration across leading cities. Brands across segments were analyzed in the luxury, premium and high-end categories; and their presence judged on the basis of standalone stores within malls as well as high streets. Since luxury brands in India have traditionally operated through boutiques in five star hotels, stores in such locations were also included in the survey. Despite more than 60% of global retailers already having a presence in India, the lack of quality retail space and legislative issues have been an impediment to the spread of organized retail in the country, says the CBRE report, ‘Expanding Horizons of Global Retailers in India.’ Commenting on the findings of the report, Anshuman Magazine, Chairman and Managing Director of CBRE, South Asia Pvt. Ltd., said, “India is still a largely untapped and unorganized retail market as a large number of prominent global retailers are yet to commence operations here. The country holds a considerable advantage over other emerging retail destinations due to its strong domestic consumption and low rate of market penetration by international retailers. India’s new middle class is increasingly becoming brand conscious and willing to spend on quality goods, a trend which is creating numerous business opportunities for midrange international brands. With political and economic sentiments already showing signs of improvement, we believe this is the right time for international retailers to look at India for expansions into the region.” The survey analysis also revealed that while India has emerged as a
prominent destination for retail segments like food and beverage (F&B), fashion apparel and big box/hypermarket chains, almost 40% of the global retailer base considered for the study was yet to establish a presence in the country. Of the retailer base already present in India, nearly 80% are present in New Delhi, while the figure stands at about 70% for Mumbai and close to 50% for Bangalore—clearly elucidating the significance of these metropolitan cities as the preferred entry points for international retail chains. According to the report, this entry pattern is then typically followed by a spillover into tier II cities such as Pune, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Jaipur. US brands accounted for the bulk of retailers covered in the CBRE study, comprising 30% of the total. Most US retailers were present in the mass market F&B category; while retailers from Italy and the UK accounted for about 19% and 16%, respectively, of the total study, largely concentrated in the luxury segment. On the flip side, the report points to the lack of quality retail real estate supply, coupled with prohibitive legislation, which has acted as an impediment to the spread of organized retail in India. Compounding the problem of limited investment-grade supply of retail space are high rentals and lack of professional mall management, all of which make for a challenging operating environment for global retailers. Fashion accessories, F&B, and beauty and cosmetics happen to be the most penetrated retail segments in terms of the presence of global brands in India; while hypermarkets are the least penetrated, largely due to the legislative barriers imposed on the category. Most international retailers incorporated in the study have, interestingly, adopted either of the two entry routes—franchisee or joint venture—creating strong linkages with domestic operators, utilizing local market expertise to guide their business operations in India.

Increased availability of funds, in turn, can have a soothing impact on the interest rates. India conceded match-winners to Belgium and England in the dying stages of the preliminary league matches, leaving captain Sardar Singh disappointed not to have secured any point from two competitive games. "We're put up a very competitive challenge against both Belgium and England, but we fumbled and gave away late goals to suffere defeats," Sardar said after the team's intensive training session today. There was a time in the last stages of the match that India went out looking for the lead, only to concede the critical penalty corner at the other end and England got the match-winner on a penalty corner rebound shot from Simon Mantell. FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter met the Brazilian head of state Dilma Rousseff in the Palacio do Planalto in Brasilia. In a gesture heavy with historic and symbolic resonance, the actual trophy that will be awarded to the winners of football’s flagship event was handed over by Blatter and Cafu, captain of the Brazil 2002 World Cup winning side. “My wish, which is shared by more than 200 million of my compatriots, is that on 13 July, 23 more Brazilians will be able to touch this beautiful trophy,” said Rousseff.
ITALY LOOK TO SLAY THE GHOST OF 2010
Immobile: I’ll never forget Torino
Italian football team players Leonardo Bonucci, Antonia Cassano Thiago Motta and Andrea Pirlo during a training session at Florence’s Coverciano training ground.
M
ILAN: Italy coach Cesare Prandelli might not admit it, but in Brazil the pressure is on to finally end the pain of a disastrous 2010 World Cup that plunged Italy into despair and sent the Azzurri into redemption mode. Yet negotiating safe passage through a "tough" Group D in Brazil, admits Prandelli, remains the priority ahead of bigger tests that could finally heal Italy's World Cup wounds for good. "We know we're in a particularly tough group, our first objective is to qualify, and then we'll see," Prandelli said. "Only once we're into the second round can we start to harbour any real ambition." Although the mood has been more upbeat of late, with Prandelli recently declaring that his
squad has been "designed with getting to the final in mind", Italy would be forgiven for enduring some jitters in the group phase. In December 2009 a collective sigh of relief was heard when Italy were drawn with Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Barely three games in, sighs turned to cries and optimism to despair as Marcello Lippi's men finished bottom of their group following consecutive draws with Paraguay and New Zealand and a crushing 3-2 defeat to Slovakia. After Brazil (1966) and France (2002), Italy became the third World Cup holders to fail to get past the first round in the next edition. Worse, Italy failed to win a single game at the tournament for the first time. Italy have since made amends:
a surprise Euro 2012 final under Prandelli (and an eventual 4-0 humbling by Spain), followed by a jittery but overall positive qualifying campaign for Brazil 2014. But despite the quiet optimism -- midfielder Daniele De Rossi said Sunday Italy were "among several teams" with the chance of making it to the final -- Italy have it all to prove. Italy have slumped to ninth in FIFA's rankings and in Brazil England, Costa Rica and Uruguay now lie in place of relative minnows Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia. For their group opener in the steamy Amazonian venue of Manaus, England v Italy already has the makings of a classic. Prandelli will be hoping his men don't freeze, as they did against Paraguay four years ago when they required a De Rossi
leveller in the second half after conceding to a 38th minute header by Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz. Prandelli does not want a repeat showing: "It will be important to take three points from our first game and in the process beat a strong team." Italy would normally be expected to account for Costa Rica in Recife's Arena Pernambuco a week later. They will certainly hope the ghost of their second game at the 2010 edition stays well away. Italy are not immune to World Cup upsets, from defeat to North Korea in 1966, going 1-0 down to Haiti in 1974 -- before which legendary 'keeper Dino Zoff had gone a record 1143 minutes without conceding a goal -losing to Ireland in 1994 and then South Korea in 2002.
Japan comeback sinks Costa Rica M
anchester United striker Shinji Kagawa scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute on Monday as Japan defeated Costa Rica 3-1 in a 2014 FIFA World Cup™ warm-up friendly for both teams. Kagawa stumbled as the ball came to him in the heart of the penalty area but kept his balance and swept a right-footed shot past Costa Rica goalkeeper Keilor Navas to give Japan a 2-1 edge. Yoichiro Kakitani, who came off the bench in the 76th minute, added an insurance goal in stoppage time for Samurai Blue. "It was good that we could come back and win after we fell behind," Kagawa said. "We should have scored a goal in the first half. We had good chances.
suhito Endo, a 34-year-old midfielder for Gamba Osaka who entered to start the second half, equalized for Japan in the 60th minute. Japanese captain Keisuke Honda left-footed a centering pass to the heart of the penalty area, where onrushing Endo - the oldest man on either roster blasted a shot into the back of the net. "Our condition was good and we played with a positive mentality," Japan coach Alberto Yasuhito Endo of Japan celebrates scoring a goal during the International Friendly Zaccheroni said. Ciro Immobile has expressed his delight at joining German giants Borussia Dortmund and thanked Torino and their fans for an unforgettable season. The Italy international was officially announced as a new Borussia player on Monday evening after Torino agreed to sell the 24-year-old striker for an undisclosed fee. Immobile has signed a five-year contract which will keep him at the Westfalenstadion until June 2019. "After a year at Torino, I say goodbye to Italy in order to transfer to Borussia Dortmund," Immobile said on his official website, ciroimmobile.it. "It hasn't been the money that has pushed me to go to Germany. I am fascinated to play in the Champions League, to come up against the strongest defenders, to be able to battle to win titles in one of the most structured clubs in the world. "I believe the style of play (in the Bundesliga) can help me become one of the best strikers in the world. I could not let this unique opportunity go by and I've earned this through hard work and by making a lot of sacrifices. To have turned it down would have been an act of folly."
Dzeko, Begovic Brazil bound with Bosnia and Herzegovina
Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko have retained their places in Bosnia and Herzegovina's final 23-man FIFA World Cup squad. Coach Safet Susic had previously named 24 players due to an injury concern over Mensur Mujdza. The Freiburg full-back is fit to take his seat on the plane to Brazil, meaning Genk defender Ervin Zukanovic is the unlucky man to miss out. Susic's nephew, Hajduk Split midfielder TinoSven Susic, has been included in a squad featuring six players from the German Bundesliga and five from the Turkish Super Lig.
C ORNER KICK Blatter, Valcke remain silent over Qatar bid MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 2014
BRASILIA: FIFA's top two officials Sepp Blatter and Jerome Valcke remained silent over questions about the integrity of Qatar's winning bid for the 2022 World Cup. Blatter met with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in a ceremony in the capital Brasilia, where he handed over the World Cup trophy ahead of the tournament that starts next week. He spoke only briefly, wishing Brazil well, and did not take questions. "This is a historical, emotional moment passing on the cup of cups from the hands of the last champions to the president of Brazil," Blatter said, speaking a mix of Spanish and Portuguese. Valcke, FIFA's general secretary, spoke earlier at the opening of the World Cup media center in Rio de Janeiro. Walking through the center, he was asked for a comment about Qatar. He shook his head several times and kept walking without saying a word.
FIFA investigator set to submit report on 2018, 2022 WC bids
Questions raised over Australia’s WC 2022 bid
SYDNEY: A former top Australian football official today said that "development" grants given to corruption-riddled overseas football bodies as part of the country's bid for the 2022 World Cup must be examined. Bonita Mersiades, the corporate affairs head for Football Federation Australia when the bid race was run, said there were similarities with the allegations against a leading Qatari football official. Britain's Sunday Times has alleged that Mohamed bin Hammam, a former FIFA vice president from Qatar, paid more than US$5 million to officials around the world before the 2010 vote that awarded the 2022 event to the tiny Gulf state. Qatar's 2022 football World Cup organisers deny any wrongdoing. Mersiades told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that questions also needed to be asked about Australia's bid.

razil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari on Monday urged his troops to sharpen up a day before their 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil warm-up with Panama. Scolari blasted his side after a Sunday training session which he said he "didn't like at all" owing to poor marking and perceived sloppiness. And with only ten days to go to their opening World Cup match against Croatia in Sao Paulo, the man who led the Selecao to glory in 2002 insisted it was time to crack the whip Sunday, "the marking was sloppy, we left spaces in the middle of the park and took up questionable positions," Scolari observed. "We cannot let our atti-

Tuesday's test at the Serra Dourada stadium in Goiania, some 200 km from the capital Brasilia, is the penultimate chance for Scolari to look at options in reserve. Friday against Serbia in Sao Paulo is his side's final friendly outing before the real thing starts with the Croatians in a Group A also comprising Mexico and Cameroon. Scolari, calling for more inventive subtlety and tactical nous from his charges, said the players know full well what he demands and expects. "I urged them what I

SHIRT numbers were used for the first time at the 1954 World Cup, and since then a clear pattern has emerged about the most dangerous digits. Predictably, No 9s lead the way with 255 goals, followed closely by No 10s on 232. Third-most prolific are No11s, with 201, with a gap then opening up to the 140 scored by No 7s and the 133 contributed by No 8s.

P
ARIS: Eugenie Bouchard became the first Canadian woman to reach the French Open semi-finals on Tuesday with a thrilling 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-5 win over Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro. It is only the third time that a Canadian has made the women’s semi-finals at any of the four majors after Carling Bassett reached the US Open semi-finals in 1984 and Bouchard herself went to the lastfour at this year’s Australian Open. The media-friendly Bouchard, who trailed badly in all three sets, has a chance to go one better now and will face Russia’s 2012 French champion Maria Sharapova for a
place in Saturday’s final. Sharapova defeated Suarez Navarro’s doubles partner Garbine Muguruza 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 to reach her fourth straight French Open semifinal. “I am just so happy right now, thanks to everyone, this is just completely unbelievable,” Bouchard told a raucous crowd, many with Canadian flags on court Suzanne Lenglen. “I’m so happy to spend a few more days in Paris and look forward to the semi-final. It feels a bit like home here,” said the bilingual right hander who won her first WTA tournament at Nuremberg on the eve of
Villa makes New York City move N
ew York City FC have announced the signing of Spanish international David Villa on a three-year deal. The newlyformed Major League Soccer club, who are jointly owned by Manchester City and the New York Yankees, confirmed on their Twitter account that the 32-year-old was their first-ever player. The club tweeted: "Welcome to New York City: David Villa (@Guaje7Villa) officially signs as #NYCFC's first ever player. #VillatoNYCFC." Villa makes the move to America after helping Atletico Madrid win their first Spanish La Liga title since 1996 last season and also reach the UEFA Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid. Prior to joining Atletico in the summer of 2013, Spain's record goalscorer spent three hugely successful seasons at Barcelona while he has also represented Valencia, Real Zaragoza and Sporting Gijon. Villa, who has never before played his club football outside of Spain, said during an interview posted on the Atletico website on Sunday that he was embarking on a new challenge after receiving
"an irresistible opportunity", although he did not specify what it was or where. However, there was widespread speculation that Villa was headed to New York City and that move was confirmed on Monday. "Throughout my career I've always tried to keep pushing myself to achieve new targets and this represents another important goal for me," Villa said on his new club's website. "I want to try and help MLS continue to grow, through playing, working hard, scoring goals and at the same time try to make New York City FC become the best team in the league,” he added.

The 2-6 6-3 3-6 defeat for the fifth seeded Indo-Zimbabwe pair, was their third at the hands of Su-Wei and Peng in the current season. Sania-Cara had lost to the world No 1 team at the Indian Wells summit clash and in the quarterfinals of the Madrid event early this season. In the two-hour contest, Sania and Cara could convert only three of the eight break chances and lost their serve five times. At the Australian Open also, Sania and Cara were ousted at the same stage. With Sania's defeat, the Indian challenge at the Roland Garros ended on Tuesday. Earlier, Sania also lost in the mixed doubles with her Romanian partner Horia Tecau while Rohan Bopanna too lost in the men's doubles and mixed doubles events with his respective partners.

Van Gaal happy with Holland as Spain loom A
MSTERDAM: Louis van Gaal insists his Holland side's preparations for their opening World Cup clash with Spain are firmly on course. The Dutch boss, who will become the new Manchester United boss following the finals in Brazil, saw his men beat Ghana 1-0 in their latest warm-up game last weekend. And van Gaal expressed his satisfaction that Holland were one of the few European countries who claimed a victory in the latest round of friendly fixtures as they face their last pre-finals showdown against Wales in Amsterdam on Wednesday night. Van Gaal said, "We were one of the few World Cup participants who won this weekend. Germany is playing 2-2 against Cameroon and Italy also plays with 2-2 against Denmark. Spain wins 2-0 to Bolivia. They get a penalty and make time just before the second goal. Well, great to hear from Spain." The final comment was tonguein-cheek at the Netherlands' first game against the Spanish in Salvador on June 13. Van Gaal changed his formation in the win over Ghana to 5-3-2, but the 62-year-old claims that is a definite indicator over how he will line up when Group B kicks off with a rematch of the 2010 final.
He added, "I'm practising for the first match against Spain. I always look at the opponent we currently take. But we have to make it difficult for Spain. That's what I saw and is why I think we need to play like that. Despite the fact the media have written about this system, the public is still coming to the stadium unsure. When the opponent is playing with two strikers, I will usually play in that system (5-3-2 ). When they retire, it may be that I'm going to play 4-4-2."

I do feel ignored at times with this selection snub: Bhajji

By Kushan Sarkar
EW DELHI: Selection snubs despite good performances have left him feeling hurt but veteran Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh says being ignored repeatedly has not dampened his spirits and he would continue to try for a comeback in the national team. Harbhajan finished this edition of IPL with 14 wickets from 14 games with an impressive economy rate of 6.47 (only third to Sunil Narine and Akshar Patel). More importantly while other spinners barring Narine and Patel found it difficult to contain toporder batsmen, most of his victims included destructive players like Glen Maxwell and Chris Gayle to name a few. "I do feel ignored and it's surely not a good feeling. Yes, it hurts when you are not selected for India. My performance in this year's IPL is for everyone to see. I can do what's there in my control. But let me assure you, I might get hurt by the snub but it would not stall my comeback bid. Among the Indian spinners, I believe that I bowled the best," the 33-year-old told PTI during an interaction with the press. It is quite ironic that while other players are being rewarded for their performance in domestic cricket, Harbhajan, after close to 700 international wickets and back-to-back successful IPLs and Champions League, is getting a raw deal. Did he have any discussions with the selection committee to find out whether they have any specific plans for him, India's second highest wicket-taker retorted, "What do you mean by specific plans for me? My job is to bowl and win matches for my team. I am doing that to the best of my abilities. Beyond that I don't need to think about anything. I still have age on my side. And I certainly believe that I will play for India".
