Will Munde’s death in a road accident bring attention to the need for better road safety in the country? Varsha Ganesh Entrepreneur Yes. It is only when big people like politicians die that such issues get importance. There are road accidents leading to deaths every day, but does anybody really care? Swati Raghavan Professional Yes. A politician's death due to a road accident is a good jolt for the authorities to realise that bringing in better road safety is the need of the hour. Punit Bhavsar Professional Yes. Now the government will wake up to the need for better road safety as a big name and family has been affected due to the lack of it.
Vivek Viswanathan PhD student Yes, just like Vilasrao Deshmukh’s death brought focus on the issue of organ donation, Gopinath Munde's death will bring in focus on the need for road safety. Suresh Raja Banker Yes, when common issues hit big names and people, the government wakes up to them.

Seen at the Smithsonian till August 16, Indians in America. Pandit Shankar Ghosh, Shrimati Sanjukta Ghosh, with Vikram (Boomba) Ghosh at Samuel P. Taylor State Park, Lagunitas, CA, circa 1970. Courtesy of the Ali Akbar Khan Foundation.
Here is Sanjaya Malakar horsing around with his siblings at home. Remember him from American Idol 2006, when he amused, entertained and absolutely infuriated Simon Cowell with his popularity, in spite of not being on par with the rest? Well, guess what, he's a singer today.
Indians in America At the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, they're all there – the Parsards, the Bhagat Singh IIIs, the Merchants, the Sharmas, all part of the Beyond Bollywood exhibition, exploring the heritage, daily experiences and the numerous diverse contributions of Indian Americans “to shaping the US”. It began on February 27 and will be on till August 16, so it should be a must on the itinerary of all Indians going to the US on holiday this summer. We checked out the website http://smithsonianapa.org and greatly enjoyed the pictures, two of which we are reproducing. One because it's a different view than the regular Jhumpa Lahiri one, the other, because we wanted to prod a few memories of a happy, funny time in 2006, when a cheeky Sanjaya Malakar seemed to have much of the country on fire with imagination during his performance as the definite underdog in American Idol. Even the generally vituperative Simon Cowell, when faced with his undoubted popularity in spite of having a less than perfect singing voice, threw in the towel as he climbed inexorably towards the top ten. He ended up in 7th position but not before a great run that had even the White House taking note of him. For those who would like to know what he has been doing in the interim, the answer seems to be “lots”, and mostly to do with singing. He was apparently working in an East Village bar but has given that up now to concentrate on his music. The news about the exhibition and the inclusion of his picture sort of brings it all back.
A new view of Azad Maidan
On World Environment Day today, celebrated by more than 100 countries, you can head over to Azad Maidan where the Observer Research Foundation, Mumbai, and Kunti Oza's and Clean Mumbai Foundation are heading a small
army of volunteers to do a clean-up of the ground. Why Azad Maidan, might you ask. What is so special about this triangular-shaped maidan in the heart of South Mumbai, opposite the equally historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. It is visited literally by hundreds of thousands of people every day, who use it as a thoroughfare and meeting place or just to sit around. And it is not the most pleasant place to do so, fillex as it is with kachra thrown around by people who just do not value the place. For it is to be valued, and its name means something, though we might have forgotten it. Few Mumbaikars know that Azad Maidan was the scene of many mass rallies during India’s struggle for freedom. But even earlier than that, during what we refer to as the First War for Independence in

1857, two soldiers, Drill Havaldar Sayyed Hussein of the Marine Battalion and Sepoy Mangal Cadiya of the 10th Native Indian Battalion, were executed here on charges of treason, reportedly blown from cannons after their speedy trial in the Esplanade Court. In fact, Azad Maidan was part of the area known as the Esplanade at the time. Many years later, Azad Maidan also saw people congregate to protest against British misrule, under the leadership of Mahatma
with Campa Cola. Now it is synonymous with sadness, loss and the sense that no-one is listening and no-one cares. Which is not strictly true of course. In the past 18 months, there has been plenty of indication that much of Mumbai cared about what was happening to those who have lived in the 96 flats on 35 illegal floors in several buildings at Worli for two decades. And more important, how are they going to demolish these flats without damaging the residences Gandhi. of other members of the society Today, it is strewn with plastic who live on the lower floors. and garbage and is in dire need of For it is one thing to punch holes mass attention to restore it to in the walls and leave the place something of its former condition. Hence it is a good place to start the uninhabitable. It is quite another clean-up drive so that we can see it for people to live with evidence of a deeply floored and largely corrupt return to something of its old system for the rest of their lives, “clean and green days.” hanging over their heads. Whatever the BMC decides to do, once they take the keys to the flats, To think that years ago, the jingle the rest of the city will be watching actually said that things go better very keenly indeed.

A cake for Jiah Khan
Since June 3 was the first death anniversary of the late Jiah Khan, we thought it might be a good idea to do a review of the whole case and find out the status of the petition filed in the Bombay High Court by her mother Rabbiya's lawyer Dinesh Tiwari. Unfortunately, Rabbiya was not available and was in fact in London, where she had a memorial service for her daughter. We tried Twitter and found her very active indeed. One tweet mentioned @RABYAK which featured a cake, said “My friends at the memorial most amazing cake from Satya.” And another one said, “Please eat it too! She would have liked it. It's a sponge cake with raspberries and cream inside xx”. Jiah Khan, taken in the prime of her youth. May she RIP.

Say environmentalists on World Environment Day today, urging people to take responsibility for their surroundings
By Gayatri Sahasrabuddhe
I
t's World Environment Day today, and in a city like Mumbai, which is rapidly growing not just commercially but in terms of size, little time is spent worrying about the environment.Much of Mumbai's growth and development is happening at the cost of the environment, whether it's the increase in garbage, destruction of mangroves, wetlands, green cover or even open spaces, the environment is always severely compromised. Mumbai's biggest concern though, remains the piles and piles of garbage and the lack of a proper waste management system. Mohammed Dilawar, Founder & President, Nature Forever Society, says, “For a city like Mumbai, the biggest concern is to deal with garbage on the streets and minimise the garbage going to the dumps. One of Mumbai's biggest environmental concern is the capitalistic approach of people.” He also points out that there is an increase in the use of plastic and a use and throw attitude, with people constantly wanting newer things that look attractive but are not necessarily good for the environment. With this use and throw attitude comes the problem of disposal. There needs to be more awareness about the materials being used and disposed and how they affect the environment.”The importance of getting a proper waste management system in place has been emphasised time and
Instead of being segregated and handled inside the housing societies, garbage is routinely dumped along the roads all across Mumbai. again by environmentalists like Francin Pinto, Chairperson, Garbage Concern Welfare Society, which has been working to turn garbage into wealth for the last 10
BMC puts the cuffs on prenatal testing By Shwetha Kannan

But this can also be used to determine the sex of the unborn child and that is illegal. So to make sure that this does not happen, we are taking a preventive approach. dents, rats, cockroaches, dogs, mosquitoes, etc. Mumbai has the highest number of rats per person in any city with around 20 rats per person she points out. These rats spread fatal diseases like plague, and the unattended garbage is only making matters worse. Here's a list of simple things you can do to protect the environment: As consumers we need to avoid the use of plastic bags and move to cloth bags. Corporates should also be pressurised into making packaging eco-friendly. Every consumer should take responsibility for the garbage they create and dispose. This can be done simply by segregating your garbage. Dry waste should be sent to the local kabbadiwala for recycling while the wet waste can be managed within your own premises by turning it into compost through compost bins available in the market. This compost can be used in the building gardens which increases the greenery. But apart from garbage, Mumbai faces other environmental concerns as well. Stalin D., Director - Projects, Vanashakti, says, “There is a lack of green spaces and those that can be accessed by the public. Mangroves and wetlands are being destroyed and turned into dumping grounds. Water bodies are not respected, air quality has worsened. People need to individually and collectively take responsibility and onus of preserving the natural heritage of the city. We need to save our rivers and if we do this we will have more than enough water that we need.” On a parting note, Pinto says, “This World Environment Day let us all take a pledge for our beautiful city, to take responsibility for the garbage we generate. There's no point blaming the government, society or people, let's take it into our own hands, let's do something.” gayatri@afternoondc.in

Congress minister for industries, Narayan Rane, was not happy about the condolences being offered in the Central Hall and he argued that since late Munde was a member of the Legislative Assembly till 2009, tributes ought to have been placed on the records of the lower house. Moreover, Vidhan Bhavan sources expressed surprise over the chair and the treasury benches not allowing the BJPShiv Sena legislators to speak. Even the senior most PWPI MLA Ganpatrao Deshmukh was not allowed to speak.

Sangharsh ends Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ Raheâ€? and “Munde Come Backâ€?. The crowds were so charged that they gheraoed Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, R.R. Patil, Harshavardhan Patil and other Congress-NCP minister's agitatedly demanding that death of Munde be probed by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Earlier, in the morning the mortal remains of Munde were taken out of the party's state head office with officers from the Navy according him a guard of honour. The casket carrying the mortal remains was later flown by an Air Force aircraft to Latur accompanied by Munde's wife Pradnya, their three daughters and members of the Mahajan family. also seen among the family mourners. As the crowds grew restless and eager to catch the last glimpse of their departed leader it was left to a emotionally chocking Pankaja Munde-Palve to appeal to the crowd to maintain calm for the sake of honour of her father and Bhagwangadh Baba, whom Munde revered. At around 1.45 pm the crowds began to get restless, Just then as the priest began chanting holy hymns, Pankaja Munde-Palve could not hide her tears. Sensing the agitated mood of the mob, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and RPIA MP Ramdas Athawale echoed the demand of the people of a CBI probe into the circumstances in which the architect of the Mahayuti alliance died. Speaking to the ADC from Parli, local resident Omprakash Kulkarni argued that the police could not control the mob which was more than a lakh or so. In anticipation of huge crowds the police had blocked the main road leading to the sugar factory and hence people like Kulkarni had to trek almost a kilometer and half to reach the site. Most of the shops and establishments in all the major towns and cities across Beed district downed their shutters as a mark of respect for the departed leader. “People are so overwhelmed by grief that in many households across the district no food has been cooked since Tuesdayâ€?, remarked Kulkarni. Local scribe Uday Joshi who was covering the event from the spot disclosed that despite the temperature
reaching 42 degrees Celsius crowds were still pouring in even as the funeral pyre was lit by Munde's eldest daughter. The sight of CongressNCP ministers made the crowd even more agitated and some resorted to stonepelting. Unconfirmed reports stated that the mob pelted stones on some ministers' official cars and even tried to set a car on fire. The police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the mob. The traffic jam was so much that there was a two to three kilometer long traffic almost reaching the outskirts of Parli town. “It took almost three hours for us to get out of the town itself to go back to nearby Beed. People are still coming in, remarked Joshi. In a statement issued yesterday evening, Pankaja Munde-Palve expressed anguish over reported instances of stone pelting and arson that took place as her father's last rites were being performed. She added that those who indulged in stone pelting could not be supporters of her and her late father. Pankaja demanded that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh order a probe into the stone pelting as many in the crowd had come from other parts of Maharashtra, even as local police have arrested 10 miscreants found indulging in the act. According to Prakash Karhade from Parli the gathered mob was angry over the presence of Dhananjay Munde. Dhananjay, later, while speaking to private channels said that he had made a mistake by leaving the side of his late uncle and repented it.

Fed up of the physical and mental torture, Jigna apparently took the extreme step following a heated argument on the issue with her in-laws. he Versova police has intensified their investigation into the prostitution racket allegedly operational in the flat owned by former Commissioner of Police turned MP Satyapal Singh. The police has found that Satyapal Singh's flat was used at the rate of Rs.1,000 per hour for prostitution with the assistance of the flat's care taker. A wanted accused in the case, Raja, who is a pimp, is still at large as the police are raiding various locations to trace him. During the interrogation, the care taker of the flat, Vakil Raju Shah, revealed that he came into contact with Raja a few months ago when the flat rent deal was discussed. According to Versova police station sources, India Bulls company officials visited this flat on a regular basis as they had rented in from Satyapal Singh to use it as a guest house. “Before sending any customer into the flat, Raja confirmed from Vakil if anyone was present in the flat”, a police officer informed.

Continued from pg 1 « the residents have lost the case from all the angles and so are packing their belongings. We do not want to forcefully evict the structure and want it to be a peaceful situation between the residents and the BMC.” The civic administration will be serving the affected residents a notice of 72hours (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), and if the residents fail to hand over the keys there will be chances of section 488 notice reaching the residents the next day (Thursday) which will state that the BMC will be entering your compound to cut off the electricity, water and gas supply, and then carry out the demolition of the internal walls and slabs of the flats to make them uninhabitable. “If the residents still remain firm on their decision, we will then file a contempt of court against them,” added Adtani. The affected residents have fixed up tents in the society premises and have decided to stay there till justice is provided. They have also fixed a new gate to their compound which the BMC had broken earlier, on November 13 last year,
when they had gone there to carry out the demolition process. The civic authority had broken the entrance gate of the compound and had cut off electricity and water supply of each resident. One of the affected residents, Devyani Jayekar, said, “We are going to fight this battle till the last moment, and this time we are all prepared and united to make sure that we do not lose our homes.” Another resident said, “We do not have any place to go, so at least on humanitarian grounds they must think over the issue. 70 per cent of the residents are senior citizens. At least think about them.” There are chances now that the BMC may serve notices to the residents under relevant sections of BMC acts for illegally putting up tents without the required permissions. Adtani also added, “The residents of the first five floors of the compound will not be affected by the demolition as there will be no damage caused. Further, the building would not be subsequently considered to be in a dilapidated condition. The demolition process will not be delayed as the work of breaking the internal walls will continue even during the monsoon.” khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

and draw their attention to their own untold horror stories. The only people who listened were reporters. During the election campaign I traveled in Uttar Pradesh a lot and everywhere I went I met people who told me that since Akhilesh Yadav took charge two years ago the law and order situation had deteriorated seriously. They said that when Mayawati was chief minister she made sure that gangsters and other criminals were locked up and this had brought crime down sharply but no sooner were the Yadavs back in power than the gangsters were back in business. ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh is exactly because of this but also because in the name of representing the interests of other backward castes this caste-based political party has allowed its OBC supporters to think of themselves as above the law. And, it has positioned Yadav officers and policemen in important offices so that they can be relied on to view Yadav criminals with indulgence. In Badaun when the desperate families of the two girls tried to get police help the Yadav policemen first asked what caste they were and refused to register a case when they discovered they were Dalits. If that is not a sign of a deep, terminal sickness it is hard to say what is. What is interesting is that the same indulgence of gangsters and other criminals is the reason why Laloo Yadav, another mighty caste chieftain, had to face the humiliating defeat in this election of his wife and daughter. appeal to the heart. Wind instruments, like the flute and the algosa, especially express the heart quality, for they are played with the breath which is the very life; therefore they kindle the heart’s fire. Instruments stringed with gut have a living effect, for they come from a living creature which once had a heart; those stringed with wire have a thrilling effect; and the instruments of percussion such as the drum have a stimulating and animating effect upon man. After vocal and instrumental music comes the motional music of the dance. Motion is
MATTER & SPIRIT the nature of vibration. Every motion contains within itself a thought and feeling. This art is innate in man; an infant’s first pleasure in life is to amuse himself with the movement of hands and feet; a child on hearing music begins to move. Even beasts and birds express their joy in motion. The peacock proud in the vision of his beauty displays his vanity in dance; likewise the cobra unfolds his hood and rocks his body on hearing the music of the pungi. All this proves that motion is the sign of life, and when accompanied with music it sets both the performer and onlooker in motion. The mystics have always looked upon this
in Bihar but what he has succeeded in doing is impose the rule of law. In Laloo’s time, people told me, there were gangsters who took shelter in the chief minister’s house after committing their crimes.
Second last nail in SP coffin So why have political leaders like Mulayam and Laloo survived for more than two decades? Of course by indulging openly in politics based on divisions of caste and creed but there is another reason and that is that at the national level they have been supported by Leftist political leaders and intellectuals. When these gentlemen first arrived in Delhi in the early nineties as chief ministers of UP and Bihar they were treated as heroes on the grounds that they were ‘secular’ and so could do no wrong. This encouraged them to see themselves as knights in shiny armour against ‘cummnal phorces’ and sadly it was the people of their states who paid the price for this. In careful imitation of the Congress Party they clothed themselves in the robes of secularism every time they were charged with incompetence and criminal governance. And, because they usually succeeded in luring Muslims into their fold by promises of secularism their caste base had an extra pillar. Even in this election when a Modi tsunami was sweeping caste-based parties out of the race I met Muslims who said that they did not want development if they could have secularism. The riots in Muzaffarnagar had put them off the Samajwadi Party but they were ready to give Mayawati another chance. Clearly not enough of a chance though since she ended up without a single seat in the 16th Lok Sabha. It is too early to write the obituaries of caste politics in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar but what seems to be becoming clear to ordinary voters is that it is time to see them in a new light. The recent spate of horrific rape cases may not have put the last nail in the coffin of the Samajwadi Party but it would be fair to say that it could be the second last. Personally I am prepared to write the obituary of Akhilesh Yadav even if he remains chief minister for another two years. When he goes he will be remembered in history as one of the worst chief ministers ever to rule an Indian state. The sooner he goes the better it will be for Uttar Pradesh. subject as a sacred art. In the Hebrew scriptures we find David dancing before the Lord; and the gods and goddesses of the Greeks, Egyptians, Buddhists, and Brahmans are represented in different poses, all having a certain meaning and philosophy, relating to the great cosmic dance which is evolution. Even up to the present time among Sufis in the East dancing takes place at their sacred meetings called Suma, for dancing is the outcome of joy; the dervishes at the Suma give an outlet to their ecstasy in Raqs which is regarded with great respect and reverence by those present, and is in itself a sacred ceremony. The art of dancing has greatly degenerated owing to its misuse. People for the most part dance either for the sake of amusement or exercise, often abusing the art in their frivolity. Tune and rhythm tend to produce an inclination for dance. To sum up, dancing may be said to be a graceful expression of thought and feeling without uttering a word. It may be used also to impress the Soul by movement, by producing an ideal picture before it. When beauty of movement is taken as the presentment of the divine ideal, then the dance becomes sacred. The music of life shows its melody and harmony in our daily experiences. Every spoken word is either a true or a false note, according to the scale of our ideal. The tone of one personality is hard like a horn; while the tone of another is soft like the high notes of a flute. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2014
IT was a sad and tragic death of our Maharashtra and BJP leader Gopinath Munde in a road accident in Delhi while travelling in the morning from his residence to the Delhi airport. He was instrumental in building and bridging the winning strategy in the recently held Lok Sabha seat from Maharashtra and has done a lot of work for the BJP. All parties will remember the great leader for his dedication and work in the political field and his contribution to the BJP.
A GREAT LOSS
— Murugesh Iyer, Thane
PEOPLE from India expected much from Modi and his able minister Munde when tragedy struck the Union Rural Development Minister. Gopinath Munde passed away after an impact in a car accident. Munde was sitting on the rear seat of the car when the accident took place and the death was caused due to a cardiac arrest. This was a big loss for the Maharashtra leader’s family and the BJP. Sixty four-year-old Munde, who made his entry into the Union Cabinet for the first time after the Lok Sabha polls, was on his way to the airport when his car was hit by another vehicle and the impact caused his sudden death. Hailing from backward sections of the society, he rose to great heights and tirelessly served people. Tributes to a dynamic leader whose premature demise leaves a void hard to fill. The news of Munde's death shocked Maharashtra's political circles and top political leaders and activists caught flights, trains to reach New Delhi. This shows how popular he was within the party and outside the BJP circle as well. It is indeed an irreparable loss after the recent Lok Sabha elections' resounding win. Let the departed soul rest in peace.

Every day one comes across hundreds of advertisements in newspapers for sale of flats. In some cases the plots are not even existent. The BMC approves the plans and the flats are sold. Many structures have come up in reserved plots for garden, hospital or schools etc. Why does the BMC allow construction of illegal floors? Allowing construction of unauthorised floors and cheating the flat buyers is a bigger crime. What punishment will the courts give to these officers who are party to this crime? — W.N.A. Nazareth, Mumbai
RIGHT OR WRONG?: The Supreme Court has recently ordered the evacuation of flats in Campa Cola Compound in view of the illegal floors in the society.
WHY should the Campa Cola residents suffer for no fault of theirs? What was the BMC doing all these years? If the buildings in the Campa Cola complex are unauthorised, why didn’t the authorities see to it then? Why have they woken up from their sleep now? If the authorities concerned knew the buildings were unauthorised, why did they collect land tax and other taxes from the residents for the last so many years? If the BMC wants to demolish the buildings, they should either refund the taxes of the resi-
dents they have collected so far or give them an alternative accommodation without charging a single rupee from them. Come what may, the residents should not hand over the keys to the BMC. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivali
Opportunistic approach THE Parliamentary elections have proved that people are sick and tired of the Congress and want the NDA to win in the assembly elections too in Maharashtra. Today a conditional or unconditional union of two separate but like minded parties, MNS and Shiv Sena, has become mandatory to uproot the ruling party. Actually, Uddhav and Raj Thackeray are temperamentally total opposites. Raj is harsher, while Uddhav is more soft, but they have the same vision for the people of the state. Their union will be a welcome decision for Maharashtrians. The two parties, MNS and Sena, are the branches of one giant tree and should come together for the common mission and a common goal. WELL, this is not the first time that we have lost a VIP in a road accident, and neither will he be the last. Rajesh Pilot as also the singer Maharajapuram Santhanam were other such victims. The accident relating to Gopinath Munde raises some pertinent questions. We are told that the Indica driver jumped the signal. Are the signals in full mode at 6.30 am in the morning? Normally they would be in blinking mode and if so, the vehicle on the right has right of way. Next, we got a glimpse of the Indica car before the police covered it. It has extensive damage on the left hand side and it definitely did not appear to be a head on collision. So who hit whom? It would appear that the shock of the accident coupled with Munde’s medical condition might have brought on the heart attack. In fact, he had time to ask for water and to be taken to the hospital. One hopes that the inquiry will be fair and transparently revealed to the public. How the matter is investigated is a crucial test for the new government. — T.R. Ramaswami, Kandivali
THE passing away of Gopinath Munde in a car accident has come as a rude shock and has rocked not only Maharashtra but Delhi too particularly in the political circles. Munde was a grassroots leader, very unassuming and his sudden death is a big blow and leaves a void in the BJP. His good times were coming as he was inducted into the Modi Cabinet with a responsible portfolio and Modi must be shell shocked at this tragic death. May his soul rest in eternal peace and give fortitude to his family members to sustain this irreparable loss. RIP Gopinath Munde. Jai Maharashtra. — K.V. Raman, Malad

The father-son duo is totally insensitive to rapes and only considers them as 'minor mistakes committed by boys'. None of them has cared to visit the victims' families when quite a few others from outside the state have done so. EW DELHI: Union Minister Gopinath Munde died due to 'shock and hemorrhage' following injuries to his neck and liver, as per the preliminary autopsy report submitted to Delhi Police by AIIMS doctors. The Union Minister suffered internal injuries in abdomen and neck and there was fracture separation of cervical vertebra between C1 and C2 (atlanto-axial joint) associated with transaction of spinal cord. The wound was associated with laceration of vertebral artery with other neck vessels and muscles and hemantoma measuring about 1,000 cc, the report mentions. The report says that in Munde's case, it is shock and haemorrhage consequent upon blunt ante-mortem injuries to the neck and liver. Investigators have collected Munde's hair sample from the Maruti Suzuki SX4 car in which he was travelling when the accident took place as forensic evidence. Explaining the technical terms, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had on Tuesday said, "The major thing that cost him very heavily was a fracture of the cervical spines C1 and C2. Wearing seat belt could have saved Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde who died in a road accident, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday said and announced a major campaign to spread awareness on observing safety measures while driving. "Wearing seat belt could have saved Munde. I lost my friend to a misconception. Most people think that the backseat belts serve only a decorative purpose. In fact wearing them is as necessary as wearing front seat belts. They can save lives in the event of impacts," said Vardhan.

SC rejects Roy’s plea for house arrest N
EW DELHI: In a setback to Sahara chief Subrata Roy, who is in jail for the last three months, the Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed his plea to be put under house arrest but allowed the group to sell properties to mobilise Rs.5,000 crore in cash and an equal amount in bank guarantee for securing his release. "The prayer for shifting the contemnor outside the jail is dismissed," a bench of jus-
tices T.S. Thakur and A.K. Sikri said while reading the operative parts of the judgement that dealt with the modifications of the earlier order. The Sahara chief, who is in Delhi's Tihar jail since March 4, was earlier directed by the apex court to pay Rs.5,000 crore in cash and furnish a bank guarantee of Rs.5,000 crore as pre-condition for his release. Sahara group has been given a go ahead to sell im-
movable properties in nine cities here, the bench said in its verdict on Wednesday and made it clear that they will not be sold below the circle rate and buyers should not be "connected or related" to the group. The sale proceeds will be deposited in a separate bank account, maintained by market regulator SEBI, which, in turn, will release the title deeds of the properties in favour of the purchasers, it said.

Dealing with
Divorce A divorce is probably one of the toughest things that you will have to deal with and it comes with the risks of excess stress, diminished finances and souring relationships with your children. To help make the process as smooth as possible, Dev Goswami & Shirley Mistry tell you what you need to know when you’re filing for divorce
C
elebrity marriages are infamous for ending in divorce, with Gwyneth Paltrow and her Coldplay frontman husband, Chris Martin, leading the pack in 2014. However, celebrities aren’t the only ones whose marriages are failing. In 2011, it was found that divorce rates in India had increased by 100% as compared to five years ago. Amicable or bitter, divorces are life altering. Whether it’s for better or for worse, it is important to stay objective during the course of your divorce and make sure that all your terms and conditions are met, without your emotions getting the better of you. Not too many of us know anything about divorce, working on the presumption that it will never happen to us. But, it’s best to stay informed, so read on as we cover the basics when it comes to filing for divorce in India.
their own personal laws. The Special Marriage Act, 1954, on the other hand, is applicable for all mixed marriages.” The different personal laws might seem confusing, but remember that a good divorce lawyer will guide you through every step of the process. Siddhartha explains that when you want to seek a court intervention or initiate a court process for necessary resolution, you may invoke the statutory provisions of the personal law that you are governed under. You usually have to abide by the personal law under which the marriage has taken place, which in turn will determine the process of your divorce.
Divorce — the two major types
When it comes to divorce, there are two ways to seek dissolution — a mutual consent divorce or a contested/ fault ground divorce. Siddhartha explains, “First, we must understand that no Since India is a secular country, most religions matter which way one decides to seek a divorce, have separate personal laws. Siddhartha explains, “Either partner can initiate legal action and seek court intervention when there is a dispute on issues including negative conduct (mental and/ or physical cruel behaviour, adultery), child custody, visitation or access and disputes over assets (movable or immovable). There are several grounds laid down by personal laws that are applicable in cases where either spouse does not want the divorce. A petition is filed in the court under the relevant acts and the court reaches a verdict based on the merits of the arguments raised by each side — these arguments have to be based on real-world facts. They are complicated and can take a while to resolve.”

Real-life tips
“From personal experience, I can say that it is very important to get your finances in check, whether it is to hire a good lawyer or to maintain your lifestyle. Also, keep track of all the documents relating to your divorce and save them in order. Simultaneously, research divorce laws online and make note of all your personal assets, such as jewellery and personal certificates. Also, change all your passwords. Apart from this, make sure you are eating and sleeping properly, join a hobby class to keep yourself occupied and distracted and seek professional help if you need it. Remember that you are not the only one going through this, so don’t let alcohol or drugs take over your life and stay away from social media such as Facebook — watching other people lead happy lives will only make you feel worse. Also, don’t venture into a relationship immediately as you are extremely vulnerable and things could end badly for you.” — Rachna Sharma (name changed to protect privacy) “First things first, I recommend you hire a financial planner to take care of your finances, as a divorce can leave you financially bereft. Also, speaking to my mother, friends and a counsellor gave me a lot of clarity and helped me move on, so I suggest you work on communicating your feelings to those who make up your support system. I also chanced upon Reiki, which kept me emotionally grounded and calm. Ever since, I have been hooked on to spiritual practices and suggest you give them a go, especially if you are feeling extremely perturbed. My biggest challenge was switching my last name back to my maiden name. It was complicated as well as emotionally draining. It involved having my passport re-made, which was an arduous process, especially because the government website offers no information. I suggest getting in touch with a travel agency to help you through the process.” — Manasi Kadne
woRking on youR Emotions While a divorce can be the most emotionally trying time of your life, how smoothly it goes is based on how well you can control your emotions.
“I don’t think you should come out of a divorce worse than you went into the marriage. It is extremely important to keep your dignity intact, so play fair and be as nice as you can, to avoid any untoward unpleasantness.” — Arathi Menon
>> Never use your children to score brownie points during divorce proceedings
staying strong: If you have decided to end your marriage, don’t lose sight of your reasons, and guide the process based on them. Don’t let apologies, fleeting promises or happier memories sway your decision. The very fact that you decided to file for divorce suggests that your tolerance was pushed to the brink. Don’t let other people (family, friends or even your partner) sway you into an emotional trip where you find your judgement becoming foggy.

split, but make sure that you are prepared to deal with the following:
monEy mAttERs
say it as it is: Don’t sugar-coat things. Your children need to know that you are heading for a split and their doubts need to be resolved. However, they don’t need to know every minute detail, especially if your marriage is ending because of a partner being unfaithful or abusive.
Rage & tears are unnecessary: If your partner is the one who wants a divorce, make sure that you keep your emotions out
independent income: Even if you have your own income, you need to re-evaluate your financial plan. This becomes more important if you have children. Indian divorce laws provide for alimony, in a negotiable amount, so ask for it if you feel that you need the extra support. Analyse your spending patterns, cut out the excesses, make sure that you have enough savings for medical emergencies and that you spend according to your new financial plan. You may also want to consider investing (wisely), to get the most out of your money.
Expert speak
Siddhartha gives us some tips, that are necessary to keep in mind while seeking a divorce: “The first thing I’d like to say is that a woman must get in touch with the right lawyer — this is essential. Second, be very clear about what you are seeking from a court. You should ensure that you don’t end up wasting valuable years of your life in endless and needless litigation. Off late, I’ve seen several relatively new trends in marriages breaking down — I’ve had cases of divorce between couples who have been married for just 1-2 years. I would like to say that you should be think practically, try to find a common ground and move on. Getting caught up with complex litigations, court battles and proving grounds for divorce will just waste time. One should approach such issues with a prudent and open mind and not be rigid in holding on to unimportant things and endlessly making accusations. Mediation is the best solution.”
If you are heading towards a marital split, you need to take stock of your finances. Read on to find out what you should be keeping in mind:
Require financial support: If you aren’t a working woman, you are going to need alimony. So, make sure that you work out an acceptable system with your spouse and take stock of existing assets. The money could be routed into another avenue to give you better returns, so consult a financial advisor before you make a decision. It would also be sensible to figure out a way to secure an income, so that you can work your way towards financial independence.
bREAking it to youR childREn While divorce is tough in itself, it is tougher to deal with when you have children. Not only are there important issues of custody rights and visitations that must be resolved, you also have to deal with your children’s emotions.
the legal aspect
of it. Remember that your partner may not play fair, but bursting into tears isn’t going to make the situation any better. In fact, it will only help build your partner’s case, especially if you are fighting for custody of your children. It is unfair to expect anyone going through a divorce to be emotionless, but when you have to communicate with your partner, or his legal aid, try to stay composed. The best thing is to find out the agenda of the meeting and prepare for it in advance. If something upsets you out of the blue (remember that nasty comments and false allegations may be thrown at you just to knock you off your feet till your partner can build a stronger case), excuse yourself, calm down and then go back to the discussion. Objectivity is everything, so vent to your friends
Siddhartha tells us that with a mutual consent divorce, the concept of joint custody is a good option. Remember that in a mutual consent divorce, all issues need to be resolved prior to filing the petition. Siddhartha tells us, “The prudent thing to do here is to resolve the question of custody and visitation with the help of relatives, friends and/or counsellors. Children should never be used as tools in legal fights. The court will decide the issue of child custody based on what is best for the child’s welfare.” Siddhartha also tells us that when children are up to or below the age of five, the mother is usually granted custody, but the courts look at each case as per the facts and circumstances and give paramount importance to the welfare and interest of the children.
Emotional support Your children can become the bone of contention in your
Assurance is everything: No matter where your divorce is headed, your children need to know that they are loved. Ensure that their routine stays the same and try and work out a system where you are both able to spend quality time with them. You may be caught up fighting your own battle, but make sure that you still ask your children how their day was, ensure that they do their homework and take an active interest in their life. no picking sides: Simply put, if you don’t have anything nice to say to your children about their father, don’t say anything. Don’t bad-mouth the other parent, as this will pressurise them to pick sides. Also, never fight over the children in front of them. If they aren’t old enough to understand, they may feel responsible and/ or guilty for your split. Restrict disappointment: While you shouldn’t paint your partner in a bad light, you don’t need to cover up for him either. If he doesn’t show up for a visit, set a time period to wait for, such as half an hour and then have a backup activity planned so that you can divert their attention.

Armaity S. Khushrushahi, an eminent divorce attorney based in Mumbai, gives us a brief overview of how divorce proceedings actually take place: “For mutual consent divorce, you can file under the Indian Divorce Act, but you are required to live separately for two years prior to filing. After filing the petition under the Special Marriage Act, the Hindu Marriage Act and the Indian Divorce Act, a date is set for counselling and six months thereafter, the final decree is granted. For Parsis, under the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, there is no waiting period and no counselling. Once the suit is filed, divorce is granted immediately. In a contested matter, on the other hand, the other party is given a chance to put in their defence against your accusations, and then the matter is heard and decided by the court on merits. For Parsis, there is a Special Court set up in the High Court and five delegates are empanelled. The delegates are the final judges on facts. Contested matter between Parsis are only heard when the session is held and that may be after six months or one year.”

Director’s cut Silent Screams, a documentary that investigates rape cases in India, recently won three awards at the New York Festival of International Television and Film Awards. F
rom the Nirbhaya incident that catapulted violence against women into the limelight, to a lesser-known case of a dalit girl in rural Haryana, Silent Screams is a film that aims to capture the stories and realities associated with rape and violence against women in India. Produced by Midtech, for Chanel NewsAsia, the documentary has been directed by Pria Somaiah Alva and features journalist Namita Bhandare, who meets survivors, law-makers, law enforcers, activists and lawyers to understand the politics and the power-play behind rape in India. We speak to Pria to find out more about her experience. Tell us what prompted you to make Silent Screams. When news about the Nirbhaya incident broke, we witnessed the anger and frustration of the youth, men and women, about how even in a big city like Delhi, women are just not safe. This anger did not die down in a day or two and instead, spread to the rest of the country. We were in talks with Channel NewsAsia to do a documentary that captured this mood. People from all walks of life came out in protest and the social conversation around rape and sexual abuse changed from being spoken about in hushed tones, to strong comments about the fundamental rights of girls and women and their safety and security. So, Manira Alva and I decided to make this film. >> A still from the documentary
Take us through the process of directing and researching for the documentary. You met several survivors, their families and people associated with rape cases. Was it tough to get to the bottom of each story? We knew that the story had to centre around the Nirbhaya incident, but it also had to capture the fight being fought by other survivors and by the public. We started researching cases, the law as it existed and closely followed the conversation in the media and online. We decided that for the purpose of the film, we wanted to use someone who was campaigning strongly against rape to draw out the narrative. So, we approached Namita Bhandare, who had successfully launched the Stop Rape Campaign online, which got over 6,00,000 signatures. We got her to travel to different parts of India to meet survivors and investigate first-hand, what the ground reality was when it came to the reaction of the community, the police and the judiciary system. We researched for nearly a month and a half before we started shooting. We wanted to be certain of what we were going to portray in the film. We wanted the case studies to represent the different issues and the power-play at work when a rape is
committed. We chose Nirbhaya’s incident and the trauma faced by her family as the main thread of the story. We chose the Park Street case in Kolkata, which was about a modern Indian woman, a single parent who was gang-raped when she left a night club, to expose the apathy of the police as well as political and judicial system. The third case was that of a 16-year-old Dalit girl in rural Haryana. We chose this case to expose the caste power-play in rural India, where rape is often used as a way to subjugate and shame a community. We also tracked live events as they unfolded in the country… Nirbhaya’s case in court, the Verma Commission Report, the anti-rape bill and the national and international recognition of Nirbhaya’s brave stance of wanting justice till her last breath. Not all rape cases generate the protest that the Nirbhaya incident did. Silent Screams also focuses on the gang-rape of a dalit school girl. Tell us about this incident. There are several ways to raise your voice. We were really impressed by the survivors that we met, who were brave, strong-willed and wanted a change in the way that blame is ascribed in the violence against them. One such story that we highlighted in the documentary is about a woman we met, who was a determined fighter. The father of one such rape victim in Haryana, was offered `16 lakhs to drop the case. The girl refused to accept the bribe as she felt strongly about her self-respect and wanted justice. She has been depicted as the 16-year-old girl in the film. On a certain level, the legal and political aspects associated with rape are not well-understood among the general public. You have attempted to unravel the politics and the attitude of the police and legal system towards incidents of rape. What is your understanding of this? Specifically speaking, the first issue most victims face is that the evidence is not collected properly, and the medical check-ups are not performed on time. This results in improper medical reports, which becomes a problem for rape survivors, as they are unable to prove anything. Also, FIRs are often not filed by the police officer. However, the laws have changed now; according to the new law, if an officer refuses to file an FIR, he can be penalised for it. Films, especially documentaries, have the power to bring issues that people are oblivious to, into the limelight. With a topic such as violence against women, how do you think documentaries such as yours can help? Through this documentary, we managed to convey a message from the survivors, that the men who commit rape should be ashamed. They should be treated like criminals. We spoke out against the humiliation that victims face at the hands of the police, the judiciary and their own communities, who should be sensitive to the trauma these women have faced, like they would be with any other crime. Survivors want to get back to their normal lives, be able to go back to work, to school and to be treated normally.

You can explain your problem to your boss, but remember to put it across politely. You can start the conversation by explaining that you are struggling with the long hours that you have been working lately. Tell him/ her that you are mostly sitting idle and explain how these long hours have been having a negative impact on your personal life (if your boss is understanding, you can explain your problem in detail). You can even suggest working from home in a worst case scenario.

“I
’m busy! Please stop calling me!” If that (and hurriedly pressing the reject button) is the way you respond to business calls, you’re earning a bad reputation. We know that when you’re busy, answering every call is impossible, but being too curt when it comes to communicating with people in your industry means that you will lose valuable contacts and a lot of respect. Don’t swing to the other side of the fence and be too friendly either — you need to maintain a delicate balance between the two. Take this quiz to find out whether being busy is holding you back from growing in your career.
everything these days! b) I browse through to see if it needs immediate attention, then reply when I have a few seconds to spare. c) I read emails only at the end of the day, so I will respond then.
You’re in a meeting and someone calls you repeatedly. What do you do? a) I don’t answer calls when I’m not in a meeting, why should this be different? b) If it’s someone important, I send them a message saying that I’ll get back to them as soon as I can. c) I disconnect, so that they know I’m busy.
You’ve promised someone that you’ll get in touch with them on a certain date. Do you keep the date? a) I can’t keep track of such promises. b)Of course! I note it down in my appointment diary. c) I don’t make promises I can’t keep.
You’re in the middle of an important assignment and a mail marked ‘Urgent,’ drops into your inbox. You... a) Ignore it — people use ‘urgent’ for
Your boss has emailed you saying that he/ she requires something done ASAP. You... a) Do nothing, obviously. If my boss needs something urgently, he/ she will tell me personally. b) Reply, telling my boss that I’m on it. c) Ignore the mail since he/ she didn’t ask me for a response, but start working on the task.
You notice that you’ve received several missed calls from the same number. You would... a) Assume that it’s a telemarketer. b) Call back immediately and apologise. c) Send a message asking who it is.
Mostly As
You don’t need to be worried about being rude, but only because you are extremely lazy! You answer calls and emails only when you feel like talking and while that might ensure that you have a lot of free time, it will ruin your professional life, especially if you ignore mails from your boss! You need to be a little more proactive — you don’t have to be connected 24x7, but when you aren’t swamped with work, you shouldn’t avoid communicating with people in your field.
Mostly Bs
You are extremely good at communicating with people. You put your work first, but reply to emails and answer calls when you have the time to. If you promise to get back to someone at the earliest, it means that you actually do so, as soon as you have a moment. Good going!
Mostly Cs
While you are mostly genuinely busy, your poor networking skills mean that you come across as rude or obnoxious. Not checking mails marked ‘urgent,’ disconnecting calls without informing someone that you’re busy and not replying to your boss are some of the things that you are doing wrong. You need to start being a little more proactive when it comes to your networking skills to ensure that you don’t end up losing contacts.

Among my close circle of friends, I am the first who got married. In fact, a lot of them are not even in relationships. I had a difficult pregnancy, but now, three months later, my husband and I have a happy, healthy, energetic bundle of joy... Now please, don’t get me wrong, I really love my kid...

But suddenly, I feel like I am nothing...
I feel fat, ugly and tired all the time. My husband is a big help, but he doesn’t have to be attached to the baby 24x7... Hey Momzee! Can I come and visit you’ll? Hey... listen... The baby was up all night; very cranky. Not a good time ok?

While you have absolutely nothing to worry about, try these tips to spice things up a little and regain his full attention.

I have been dating my boyfriend for the past two months. I haven’t even told him that I love him yet, but he has already asked me to accompany him to his parent’s house for a vacation. This is happening too fast. I like him a lot and don’t want to lose him, but it’s too early

Patience is a virtue
I am engaged and want my fiancé to be frank and friendly with me. I want to talk to her and know what she thinks about sex, etc... But I am afraid to speak to her frankly as she may get me wrong. What should I do so that she can trust me and speak to me without fear. I want her to be frank and friendly with me, that’s it. PATIENCE is a virtue, and in sexual matters you could reap rich dividends in the form of a satisfying sexual life, merely by being patient. You say you are engaged and I presume that it is an arranged alliance. If so then it would take quite some time for the girl to ‘feel’ close to you as you are a stranger who has entered her life out of the blue. In a love marriage, closeness and intimacy

sexuality of a woman is predominantly heartcentred. She needs to feel emotionally close to you before she shares any kind of intimacy with you. I would advise you to go slow as she may be feeling shy and awkward. Instead, you could win her heart by befriending her, and gently romancing her. Gradually, as she starts knowing you and as she starts liking and loving who you are, she will ‘feel’ close and intimate towards you, and would probably send ‘feelers’ in the form of a touch, holding of hands or even verbally. This is the moment when her ‘heart is engaged’ to yours – and let me tell you it will be worth the wait. And when this happens, she will be more than willing to share intimacy with you.

India's services sector expanded for the first time in nearly a year during May on rebound in new business orders, an HSBC survey said yesterday. The headline HSBC Services Business Activity Index was at 50.2 in May, rising from April's reading of 48.5 and pointing to the first expansion of output in 11 months. A reading above 50 shows that the sector is expanding, while a reading below 50 shows that the output in the sector is contracting. The rise was largely supported by a rebound in new orders and an overall improvement in client demand. "Activity in the services sector is improving gradually. Fortunately, the boost to sentiment from the strong election result will further drive up activity in the sector," HSBC said. The Indian economy will be able to tolerate only a gradual pick up in growth, otherwise inflation will rear its head again, HSBC said. "PMIs indicate a gradual improvement in services activity...The election result should add further strength to the recovery, but don't expect soaring growth," HSBC Co-head of Asian Economics Research Frederic Neumann said.
Insurance Stocks Soar On Hopes Of FDI Hike
Shares of insurance companies saw renewed buying interest and surged up to 9 % in view of the reports that government is contemplating raising FDI cap in the sector. Max India rose by 9.01 %, while Reliance Capital shares rallied 5.22 % on the BSE. Shares of Bajaj Finserv gained 4.83 %, while Religare Enterprises was up 2.58 %. Reports said earlier this week that the Finance Ministry is contemplating raising FDI cap in insurance sector from 26 % to 49 % with some riders like restriction on voting rights. "We might increase FDI cap in insurance without commensurate increase in voting rights. We talked with stakeholders and also held high level meeting in ministry," a senior ministry official had said earlier this week. He had also said that the government may raise FDI cap in the sector gradually beginning with non-life and health followed by life insurance segment.
IICA, Grant Thornton Ink Pact To Help Firms Implement CSR
The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs and tax advisory firm Grant Thornton have entered into a pact to develop capacity of domestic firms for effective implementation of corporate social responsibility (CSR) rules laid down under the new Companies Act. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed here yesterday. "With the notification of the rules, the agenda has been set for knowledge and awareness building and to show the corporates what they can do for national development," IICA DG & CEO Bhaskar Chatterjee said. As per the new law, certain class of companies are now required to shell out at least two % of their three- year annual average net profit towards CSR activities. The CSR rule is applicable for companies having at least Rs 5 crore net profit, or Rs 1,000 crore turnover or Rs 500 crore net worth.
Show-cause Notice To NSEL On Exemptions
The Finance Ministry has issued a show-cause notice to the National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL), which is engulfed in a Rs 5,600 crore payment crisis, asking why exemptions granted to it in 2007 should not be withdrawn. This is the second such notice to the spot commodity exchange promoted by Financial Technologies India Ltd. A similar notice had been issued to the NSEL by the Consumer Affairs Ministry in 2012. The Consumer Affairs Ministry, which regulated spot exchanges until the NSEL crisis broke last year, had exempted the exchange under section 27 of the Forward Contracts (Regulation) Act and allowed it to offer one-day forward contracts provided members do not resort to short sales. "NSEL has received this letter from the Ministry of Finance. We are examining the letter and as per the deadline given, we will respond in 15 days’ time," an NSEL spokesperson said.

No Gas Price Hike Retrospectively? By A Business Reporter
T
he government may not implement the delayed increase in price of natural gas with retrospective effect as it would be difficult to back charge higher bills from power and CNG consumers, an official said. A new price for all domestically produced gas, based on a formula suggested by a panel headed by C Rangarajan, was to have come into effect from April 1 but was delayed due to the general elections. The revised rate is yet to be announced as the new government applies its mind to the issue. "Natural gas is mainly used for manufacturing fertiliser, generating electricity and producing CNG. Since the new price announcement was deferred, gas was sold at the old rate of USD 4.2 per million British thermal units. "This price was used to calculate the rate at which urea was sold to farmers, power to households and CNG to automobiles. Now if the gas price is to be revised with retrospective effect, from April 1, then how will you back charge the users who have already consumed electricity or CNG," a top government official said. Retrospective implementation of
the new gas price may not pose a problem for the fertiliser sector if the government agrees to proportionately increase the subsidy payout for the period beginning April 1. Applying the same principle to power producers and CNG retailers would be difficult because the central government does not provide any direct subsidy to them. At the assumed new rate of USD 8.4, the cost of power will jump to Rs 6.40 per unit from Rs 2.93 a unit currently. It would translate into an increase of at least Rs 8 per kg in retail CNG rates. The official said the BJP-led government is studying the Rangarajan panel formulation of pricing gas at an average of international hub prices and the rate at which India imports LNG. A decision on implementing the formula, which was approved by the Cabinet under then in December, will be taken in consultation with the ministries of finance and law, he said. "The retrospective application of the new price will have financial implications for both fertiliser subsidies and also for the cost of production of power in gas-based plants. The recovery of differential price because of retrospective notification will also be an issue," he said.
government," he added. Sinha further said the regulator has already taken up the issue with the government that they should also issue minimum 25 % of shares if they want to get listed."Our stand as a regulator is that all companies should be treated alike on all matters, not only public float on corporate governance and all and this is what we have been telling the government," Sinha said. At present, private sector companies are compulsorily required to have at least 25 % public shareholding, while for government-owned companies minimum threshold level is only 10 %.
The 25 % public float norm was implemented last fiscal by the Sebi, following which many companies including blue-chips like Wipro had to bring down promoters holding. There are close to 30 listed PSUs where public investors hold less than 25 % stake. The major PSUs where government holding currently stands at more than 75 % include Coal India, SAIL, MMTC, NHPC, NMDC and SJVN. The move is part of Sebi's efforts to deepen the markets and increase public float. Besides, it would also help in promoting wider participation from investors and boost government's plan of raising funds through disinvestment.

ndustry body Assocham has asked the government to take measures to improve supply and storage facilities for the country's crop produce, in view of the likelihood of deficit rainfall due to the El Nino effect. "We recommend the government to immediately announce steps to control food inflation in view of the impending El Nino and the cascading negative affect it will have on crop production," Assocham President Rana Kapoor said. "The government needs to make some key announcements on supply side management, logistic management, including warehousing, and implement changes in the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act to curb hoarding," he added. After four years of normal and above-normal monsoon, India is expected to have below normal monsoon this year with rainfall projected to be 95 %, a news which is disappointing for the farming community. About 60 % of net sown area of the country is rain-fed. The deficit rainfall of 5 % due to El Nino factor will cause loss to the GDP of about 1.75 %, i.e. Rs 1.80 lakh crore, which in turn will hurt lakhs of unskilled jobs, says Assocham. With every 1 % deficit in rains, the country's gross domestic produce (GDP) falls by 0.35 %, it added. Officials in the weather department earlier said the monsoon is expected to be below normal because of ElNino effect, which is generally associated with the warming of ocean water.

TV TATTLE Leonidas’ tale
“Hail King Leonidas!” That’s the salutation this week on 'Pedigree Heavy Petting All Stars', as we meet the king and his parent Tanisha Mukherjee. Brand new Bhamrah
‘Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa’!
Aspiring scientist-turned-mesmeric model Pooja Bhamrah has transformed into an attractive actress in the show ‘Yeh Jawani Ta Ra Ri Ri’. Marking her debut in Channel V’s blockbuster show was a strategic move for Pooja, who wanted to get familiar with the nuances of camera movement. Punjabi kudi Pooja is playing Devika, a real smooth girl full of herself. She can be pretty shrewd at times but deep down she is harmless, says the model who hasn’t formally studied acting but has done a short-term theatre workshop with Neeraj Kabi (of Ship of Thesus fame).
You’ve seen them dance, you’ve seen them pirouette, you’ve seen them leap and perform aerial stunts. But you have not seen it all yet! With a brand new season of 'Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa' all set to make its appearance, the stakes have been upped and the challenge is to showcase something ‘alag’ this time. So how exactly is this season going to be different? The woman known for her latkas-jhatkas-andthumkas, Madhuri Dixit-Nene makes her comeback, albeit in a sexier, hotter look which is sure to set hearts racing faster than ever as she shakes a leg to some new dance forms. We had a brief chat at the launch of the show at Film City. Here is what the diva told us.’ By Sandeep Hattangadi
What is unique about this season? This season the audiences will be introduced to some unusual and unheard of dance forms like Capoeira, Zouk, Bolero and many more from diffeent parts of the world.
A beard story
Actor Siddhant Karnick is currently seen in 'Gustak Dil', sporting a beard since February. He has to maintain the bearded look for his character Sagar Khurana. He is a creative, eccentric, unpredictable individual who has seen the highs and lows of life. On being asked about his bearded look he says, “Absolutely easy. For a lazy person like me, not having to shave every morning is absolutely wonderful. I have started enjoying the beard. I get some food stuck in my beard which serves as a snack later on.” (laughs)
Royal vamp
Veteran actress Mita Vashisht is set to play a dark character in Ekta Kapoor’s popular historical ‘Jodha Akbar’ on Zee TV. Ekta and Mita are collaborating after six years. Mita will play Akbar's (Rajat Tokas) power-hungry, evil stepmother Maha Chuchak. Her aim is to dethrone Akbar and will be so evil that if need be, she can even get Akbar killed. Her entry will result in more troubles in the emperor's life. Mita will soon start shooting for the show and her track will present a fresh set of twists and turns for audiences to look forward to.
Mahi Vij turns gangster P
opular TV actress Mahi Vij will play the role of a gangster in the crime series 'Encounter'. The episode will depict the tale of an aspiring actress Aashna, who runs away from her home to become the first woman gangster in the history of the underworld. The actress will use an underworld gangster as her ladder to reach her aim. “I am essaying the role of a female gangster Aashna who is very strong headed,” Mahi said. “My experience of shooting for 'Encounter' has been lovely, especially working with talented actors like Manini Mishra, Siraj Mustafawho have been in the industry from a long time. I am sure theaudiencewillloveourwork,”shesaid.Actress ManiniMishrawillplayinspectorMitaGaikward. “In the show, I fight for women's rights and play an active role in fighting criminals. She is passionate, headstrong, and courageous. The experience of shooting 'Encounter' itself was very exciting and challenging,” Manini said. The episode will be aired coming Friday on Sony.
A word about your fellow judges. Karan Johar, who seemed to be the easiest to please until now, is going to be seen as the no-nonsense judge focusing purely on the performance. Choreographer-jury member extraordinaire Remo will be seen sporting a grunge look to go with his surly demeanour and he promises to be the one the contestants would be well advised to be wary of. And to up the ante and lift this competition to a truly international level would be Ukrainian dance expert, winner of the international 'Dancing with the Stars' and new jury member Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Clearly, this season, there’s going to be no room for error. “Average” has no place in 'Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa.
What are the other credits of the show? Hosted by Ranvir Shorey and last season’s winner Drashti Dhami, this season' dancing and performances will no longer be confined to the dimensions of the stage but will venture outdoors as well. This season, audience favourites Salman Yusuff Khan and Lauren Gottleib will take on the role of adversaries and join hands to challenge contestants in an exciting dance combat. And to ease the tension on the floor, popular comedian Sudesh Lehri has been roped in to provide the much needed comic relief. Have you prepared for the show in any way? Yes. This season, it is not only a challenge for the contestants, but also for us as judges. I have been training in Latin dance forms and am looking forward to see some newer dance forms from the contestants as well.
Who are the participants this time round? We have cricketer Sreesanth with Sneha, Palak with Kruti, Sukhwinder Singh with Bhavna, Karan Tacker with Suchitra, Purab Kohli with Mohena, Sophie Choudhary with Deepak, Akshat Singh with Vaishnavi, Ashish Sharma with Champa, Mouni Roy with Punit, Puja Bannerjee with Rajit, VJ Andy with Bhavini and Kritika Kamra with Savio. Looks like Madhuri has a tough ask on her hands!

After conceding match-winners to Belgium and England in the closing stages of successive matches, the Indian defence will need to raise its game several notches against Spain, who won a penalty shootout against India for the fifth position when they last met in the 2013 World League Semifinals. Financial woes have forced the Spanish hockey team to opt out of some big-league events over the past two years, but the crux of the team is still there, and could again be troublesome for the Indian defenders. wobbly defence of India. Indian team’s technical director, Roelant Oltmans feels the high-quality individuals in the Spanish team could pose problems for his team. But Indian players, according to Oltmans, are professional enough to overcome the trauma of the losses in earlier games. “We’ve not played Spain often in recent times, but they have several high-quality players in their ranks,” said Oltmans. “We’ll have to perform well as a team to overcome this rival.” Oltmans said it was disappointing to have lost two matches due to late goals, but the Indian team has “played quite well.” Oltmans said there were clear signs of the team’s rising performance graph, and it should be visible more in the World Cup itself. “We’re disappointed over the result, but not at the level of performance by the boys. In due course, it should lead to better results. The Indian team needs to lift its game further,” he said.

he wanted to give something back to the game. “In Brazil, you will find many players going back to their roots and developing their game. This is how we churn out good players who go on to play in the national team. But I cannot say the same for India, hence I felt that we should start this academy. We have six players playing for various clubs now,” said Beto. He said that he wants to inculcate the Brazilians concept of playing, which is 'playing for joy'. “It is not that we don't have talent over here, but most of this talent ends up working in banks. C ORNER KICK Brazil plays down airport problems as Cup looms
CAPTAIN GERRARD WARNS AGAINST PENALTY FIXATION 30
E
ngland captain Steven Gerrard said on Wednesday that he is not worried about the prospect of a penalty shoot-out at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil despite his country's terrible record at spot-kicks. England have been eliminated on penalties at the World Cup in 1990, 1998 and 2006 and also fell in shoot-outs at the UEFA European Championship in 1996, 2004 and 2012. Gerrard scored as England went out to Italy at Euro 2012, but saw a penalty saved in 2006 when his side were beaten by Portugal in the World Cup quarter-finals in Germany. Penalty shootouts have become something of a national obsession in England, but Gerrard says that he and his teammates cannot afford to become distracted by them. "It's difficult to describe what it is like," Gerrard told BBC Radio 5 Live from
Miami, where he is taking part in a pre-tournament training camp. "Unfortunately for me, I failed in that situation when I took a penalty in a World Cup environment and it was a difficult atmosphere to be in. "I learnt my lessons from that and a couple of years ago I scored the penalty I was asked to take. We are going to practise penalties a lot, but it is a difficult situation to put into words and describe it. "There is a lot of pressure. You have an awful lot more time to think about your penalty and what is at stake is a lot bigger and it is a pressure situation. "A penalty shoot-out is a more pressurised situation than any one penalty in a league game." He added: "I can understand the fixation because we have failed in quite a few shoot-outs, but I would say don't get carried away with it because it might never come about.
Prandelli explains Rossi and Destro omission

taly coach Cesare Prandelli has explained why he did not select Giuseppe Rossi and Mattia Destro in his FIFA World Cup squad. Both strikers voiced their frustration after failing to make the final cut, with Rossi's omission coming after the 27year-old recovered from injury. Speaking to www.figc.it, Prandelli said, “I didn't expect all these controversies. I don't want to make judgments but I feel the need to clarify what happened with regards to Rossi and Destro. "With Rossi I have been very clear. The risk was great. I met with him in Coverciano (Italy's headquarters) on May 7 with the intention of telling him that he was not going to be in the 30-man preliminary squad. But
then I thought he would be a good example for everyone. I thought that his story could be a beautiful one to tell." The Fiorentina striker missed four months of the season with a right knee injury but returned to action last month. The 27year-old, who was Viola's top scorer last season with 16 goals, started in Saturday's goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland in London. "Remember what I said to the media before, that regardless of what would happen, Rossi had already won his battle," Prandelli said. "I told Rossi prior to the game against Ireland that I needed to see something more from him on the pitch. "I wanted to see a striker. But I didn't see what I wanted. I accepted his strong and beautiful challenge but I told him twice after the game against Ireland that he was not in the 23-man squad. I also told him that my decision had been a difficult one because he is a strong and important player, with whom we have experienced extraordinary times. But the risk was big and I was very clear with him clear and told him he had not completed the healing process."
SAO PAULO: Brazil's government has played down problems with its ageing airports, many of which are being renova -ted even as the World Cup looms from next week. Brazil has been racing to transform creaking infrastructure ahead of the June 12-July 13 event. But with many projects -including several stadiums -- running behind schedule, the government stressed the transport overhaul is being done with an eye to the long-term future, not the next month. "The new objective is to have new airports for the country," said Aviation Minister Wellington Moreira Franco yesterday. "I can assure you we are prepared" for the World Cup, he said in a radio broadcast while admitting, "it is clear we have problems." But the minister insisted that Brazil could cope with the expected influx of soccer tourists -- more than three million from across Brazil and another 600,000 from across the globe -- in the weeks ahead. "In Salvador (in the northeast), for example, we received some three million passengers for the Carnival, far more than for the Cup, and we served their needs well." Earlier, Folha de Sao Paulo daily published an overview of the airports in the 12 World Cup host cities, all undergoing renovation just nine days before the Cup starts.

History’s in our grasp: Gonzalez T
hough his name might not be the first to come up when discussing the virtues of the Costa Rica side that will run out at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, there can be no doubting the importance of Giancarlo Gonzalez to coach Jorge Luis Pinto’s plans. That much was clear on the road to Brazil, when the centrehalf, along with Los Ticos’ star goalkeeper Keylor Navas, spent more time on the pitch than anyone. Willowy, quick on his feet and effective in the air at both ends of the pitch, the man they call Pipo was a cornerstone of the defensive wall that smoothed Costa Rica’s progress through the Brazil 2014 qualifiers. Yet while the Central Americans made relatively serene progress in the final Hexagonal
round, their path to the knockout rounds at the world finals looks to be anything but easy, not with Uruguay, England and Italy providing the opposition in Group D. You only have to look at Costa Rica’s statistics from the final sixteam qualifying round to see the effectiveness of their defence. In their ten games, Los Ticos conceded a mere seven goals, no small achievement considering regional heavyweights Mexico and USA, with their muchvaunted front lines, featured among the opposition. “The feeling I get is that there’s not such a big difference between teams any more, not just in the CONCACAF Zone, but in general, around the world,” the defender said. “You get some very close scorelines now.”
Giancarlo Gonzalez believes that the standard of qualification for the World Cup have become difficult as compared to earlier editions.
NEW DELHI: The fans can't wait to catch a glimpse of him in the upcoming soccer World Cup and well aware of the interest in Cristiano Roanldo, cyber-criminals are most likely to use the Portugese star's name to lure visitors to web pages designed to infect them with malware. The McAfee 'Red Card Club' showcases the top 11 Brazil-bound players whose web pages are considered to be risky for fans to search for online. Following Ronaldo are Argentina's Lionel Messi, Spain's Iker Cassillas, Brazil's Neymar and Algeria's Karim Ziani in the list prepared by the leading virus protection and Internet security site.
Every World Cup player to have drug test
LAUSANNE: FIFA is on an ambitious mission to make sure that for the first time every player who takes part in the World Cup has a drug test and carries a 'biological passport'. Football's governing body wants to impose the passport -already used in cycling and athletics -that will follow a player throughout his career, giving details of blood and urine tests. Since March, a team of FIFA doctors and nurses have been carrying out random blood and urine tests at internationals and team training camps. Lionel Messi's Argentina and France were visited last week at their camps to prepare for the tournament, according to media reports. Brazilian star Neymar, Italian captain Gianluigi Buffon and Spain's Andres Iniesta were among those who gave samples at last year's Confederations Cup. Chelsea, Barcelona, Santos and Monterrey stars were tested during international club competitions over the past 18 months. FIFA is building up a biological passport on all players. It has taken at least two test samples from most players while some have given up to four.
C ORNER KICK Messi world’s most valuable player, study shows MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2014
GENEVA: Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi remains the world's most valuable footballer, even though his crown slipped this season, a market study showed on Wednesday. In its annual report on the player market, the Swiss-based CIES Football Observatory put Messi's value at 216 million euros ($294 million). Even though Messi's lower performance levels slashed 19 million euros from his market value, he was still worth almost twice as much as arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, second in the ranking on 114 million euros. CIES said that Messi's higher value was mainly related to his younger age -- he turns 27 this month, while Portuguese icon Ronaldo is already 29. Ronaldo's heroics this season with Champions League winners Real Madrid meanwhile saw his market value climb by four million euros.

LORHAM PARK (US): Portugal were gearing up for the World Cup in New Jersey, fretting over the fitness of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. With the World Cup looming, the FIFA Ballon d'Or winner as best footballer of last year, had some bad news about his recent aches and pains. Ronaldo has a "muscle injury on the back of his left thigh as well as left-leg patellar tendinitis," the Portuguese Football Association said yesterday in a report on his medical issues and those of stars Raul Meireles, Pepe and Beto. Amid some heavy downpours, the four spent their time at the New York Jets' training center grinding it out on different exercises meant to get them in the best possible shape in the final sprint before the World Cup starts June 12. While Portugal have previously discussed superstar Ronaldo's thigh injury -- sustained late in the season -- it was the first time they reported patellar tendinitis. The Portuguese have been drawn in Group G at the World Cup and will face Germany on June 16 in Salvador, the United States a week later in Manaus and then Ghana on June 26 in Brasilia. "We hope that Cristiano is in good enough shape to play -- and to help the team," teammate Nani, who plays for Manchester United, told reporters. Ronaldo "is going well, and he is relaxed about it ... Things are going the right way," he added, after hundreds of fans welcomed the team at the Newark airport in New Jersey, just outside New York City. Portugal will play two friendlies while in the United States. They take on Mexico in Foxboro near Boston on Friday -- at the home of the NFL's New England Patriots. Next Tuesday they face Ireland at the Jets' MetLife Stadium -which hosted the Super Bowl in February. Nani, 27, who missed out on the last World Cup in South Africa due to a shoulder injury, said fitnes woes can make a player "distracted and less sure of himself."
Mirante to provide Italy cover
Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante will travel with Italy's World Cup squad to Brazil as a reserve, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced today. Italy are hoping to have second-choice goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu in top physical condition by the time the tournament starts in Brazil. Sirigu, who plays for Paris St Germain and started in Saturday's goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland in London, suffered a rib injury during training earlier this week. Doctors have ruled out a serious injury but the player will need several days to recover.A statement from the FIGC read: "Antonio Mirante will also be in tomorrow's charter flight that will take the Italian national team to Brazil. The Parma goalkeeper, who has taken part in all of the team's preparations in Coverciano, has been called up as a precautionary measure.

OIANIA (BRAZIL): World Cup hosts Brazil strolled to a 4-0 win over Panama in their penultimate warm-up, with goals from Neymar, Daniel Alves, Hulk and Willian securing the win which barely satisfied their coach. After a tentative opening, the Selecao easily saw off limited opponents as Neymar, with his 31st international goal, set the ball rolling, rifling in a free-kick for the opener on the half hour. Alves drove in the second five minutes before the interval and a cheeky Neymar backheel was enough to pave the way for Hulk to dispatch the third early in the second period before Willian put the icing on the cake 17 minutes from time.
With only Friday's friendly against Serbia to come before the Brazilians meet Croatia in their June 12 World Cup opener in Sao Paulo, 2002 title-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari seized the chance to use several second string players. He saw room for further improvement. "I am still concerned. We are getting better -- but we know we have a fair way to go," indicated the man who lifted Brazil's fifth Cup in Japan 12 years ago and who now wants to deliver first success on home soil. "The run out was worthwhile but we must up our rhythm and be a lot better for the Croatia game," prior to further group games against Mexico and Cameroon.

Senad Lulic tracked the ball down in Mexico's area and slipped it through to Sejad Salihovic, who cut back to set Hajrovic up for the one-time finish. Boateng Brothers prepare for another meet evin-Prince and Jerome Boateng hit the headlines for this very reason when they faced each other on 23 June 2010 in South Africa. Jerome took to the field wearing the white of the German national team, while Kevin-Prince featured for the Black Stars. The match, which the European side won 1-0, marked another first in world football. History is set to repeat itself at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil this summer, with Germany and Ghana locking horns once again when their Group G clash gets underway in Fortaleza on 21 June. The brothers, who are both currently with their respective national teams as they prepare to take part in their second World Cup tournament, took some time out to speak to FIFA.com about the prospect of another family affair. “I’m really looking forward to the match and the fact that both Boateng brothers will be on the same pitch,” said the 27-year-old KevinPrince. “Of course, it’s a special experience to face your own brother at the World Cup and it's not the first time either. There's always a lot of excitement surrounding a World Cup, but this will be a particularly
special moment for us both,” added Jerome. The pair share the same father, who hails from Ghana, but have different mothers. They both grew up together in the German capital Berlin, where they progressed through the youth and amateur ranks at Hertha BSC. And 25-year-old Jerome still has fond memories of those early years:“I will never forget when we played alongside each other at tournaments or when we became German champions together. And whenever one of us was fouled, the other would always come running in ready to protect him.” The brothers both went their separate ways after their time in Berlin. KevinPrince, who normally sits in the hole behind the strikers but can also fill in at centre-forward, played for a range of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan before making the move to the Bundesliga with Schalke 04. Jerome, who prefers to play in central defence but is equally at home on the right or left, enjoyed spells at Hamburg and Manchester City before Bayern Munich eventually came calling. Operating at the heart of defence, he helped the Bavarians to a treble in 2013.

The one-time world No. 9 reached the quarterfinals at three of the four major events in 2011 before injuries derailed her in 2012 and for the first half of last year. The 26-year-old Petkovic will now appear in her first-ever Grand Slam semifinal. Petkovic's semifinal opponent on Thursday will be fourth-seeded Romanian Simona Halep. The other semi will pit seventh-seeded Maria Sharapova against 18th-seeded Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.Fourth-seeded Simona Halep advanced to the semifinals by beating 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-2, Halep, the highest-seeded player in the draw, lost in the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January, her best previous performance at a Grand Slam tournament.
