nvestigators probing the gang rape of a 19-yearold girl at Shakti Mills on July 31, are desperately searching for the fifth accused in Mumbai as well as out of the state. The fifth accused, identified as Ashfaq Dawood Shaikh alias Babu, is a resident of Mumbra. Police strongly believe that the accused might have either fled to his hometown or a friend’s

home in Delhi. During the investigation into the first gang rape case, police learnt that Babu had fled the city anticipating his arrest in the case. It was the crime branch team who was carrying out a parallel probe, that learnt that a gang of seven people had carried out a number of rapes , preying upon s the victims, who had visited Shakti Mills in the past.

OPINIONS

Has teaching, as a profession, evolved over a period of time? Francis Joseph Educationist Yes. A teacher is no longer a provider of facts and nformation which is readily available -- thanks to Internet, media and open educational resources accessible worldwide. They play the role of facilitators and mentors. Parinaaz Mehta Phd Scholar Yes. Teaching from technological point of view has changed where teachers have started taking power point presentations and online tutorials seriously. But knowledge and referencewise, the Indian system has a long way to go.

Aarthik Ramkumar Teacher Yes. With the advent of technology and an increased freedom of expression, teaching is no longer a one way process. While teaching, there is learning for students as well as the teachers these days. Manoj Raikar Music Teacher Yes. The dynamics have evolved. The age-old ‘gurushishya’ tradition has changed. The ways and means of teaching, the rapport between teachers and students have evolved. Rashmi Iyer Student Yes. There is more communication between teachers and students, not only with regards to academics, but also matters outside the sphere of education. The respect is the same.

Kranti Rajguru is an amazing woman. She has been taking her study class at Homibaba Tekdi (hillock), Kalyan since the last 11 years. In spite of her leukemia she is the first one to break into song and dance and pull everyone on stage! She has a unique way of teaching – she sits among her children on the floor. The once difficult maths suddenly becomes easy with her caring and personal coaching. With a handicapped unemployed husband, she runs her household on her stipend. Her will power is strong and she has educated her own son and who achieved a 95% LIJJA AT AD. AGENCY 8811/LA A Eng. in his 12 Std. But what brings happiness to this dedicated band to do this year after year is the joy they see on the faces of these children. We salute them on this day. These are the true game changers in our country, bringing change, one poor child a time.

his teacher’s day, I want to pay tribute to a different band of teachers who are silently bringing about a revolution in the lives of the poor. They teach in schools beyond the walls, literally ‘Schools without Walls’! They are the ones who take education to the doorstep of the marginalised in the slums and far off rural areas. They teach in temples, tin sheds (hot as an oven), under trees, in political party ‘shakas’ (offices), in class rooms, in any place made available by the people. In short, any tree to hold a chart, any place to call a school! It is truly a daunting task see her class full of bubbly little but no less important. As we say, ones. She has no children of her ‘Where there is a child there is a own, but she considers these chilschool, where there is a hut there is dren as her own and showers them learning, where there is REAP there with more love than they would receive from their own mothers. She has that life. “They must have a better fuone quality which a teacher so ture,” she says. Parents and chilmuch requires: a kind heart and a dren love her. Her day begins with love for her children. Visitors to her going hut to hut to collect her chilclass are amazed at the variety of dren. No bells here; No cars to teaching aids she makes out of bring the children. Her class is althrowaway material. The children ways full of home-made teaching are all so engrossed in her class and lap up all that she conveys to them in song and activity. Her husband is jobless and she runs the household on her teacher’s stipend. But when she is in class she is another person. Her children are her joy. Manisha Gurav has also been with REAP since the last 14 years, in the Govandi dumping area for last 13 years and this last year in Diva where she has shifted residence. She is always smiling; one wonders how one can smile in the midst of all the smell and filth. You never hear her complain. It is a treat to Chandrakala Pawar, with REAP since 15 yrs. Deepali Chavan teaches at Nirmal Nagar.

with delight, If not you, then who else can?

Bhaag Farhan Bhaag!

It was the launch of a new cell phone by a little-known brand, and in the normal course, we might have just ignored it. But it was being launched by none other than crowd pleaser and star of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Farhan Akhtar, so naturally, we went off, to see what he looked like after the runaway success of the film, and whether it was true that the formally slightly – built actor now packed a set of enviable abs and biceps and triceps etc. So there we were at this five-star hotel in South Mumbai and there

HAPPY TEACHERS’ DAY: A teacher is the one who shapes society.

Gracious Teacher One of the best teachers we have known is V S Venkatavaradan, former director of the Nehru Planetarium, now living in retirement in Chennai but still a active poetry writer, on the internet. Since today is Teachers’ Day, who better than him to give this class of people who have touched our lives, a better tribute! “What nobler employment, or more valuable to the state, than that of the man who instructs the

rising generation”—Cicero

“Mansions and Monuments may vanish But a Teacher’s work will last for Eternity” Even as you teach Physics, teach them also Philanthropy. As you teach Chemistry, imbibe them with compassion. Botany should blend with beauty that is truth. In a dictionary, Gentle and Generosity precede Geology.

The real lowdown from the real McCoy

Our Dr. Rajan Bhonsle, consultant in Sexual Medicine, honorary professor and head of department, KEM Hospital & Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai, Diplomat, American Board of Sexology & American College of Sexologists, head, Heart To Heart Counselling Centre, has sent us this most pertinent piece of information for all those following the case of Asaram, the Godman. We reproduce verbatim: “A lot of curiosity, skepticism, chattering is going on, ever since a ‘Potency Test’ for Asaram was mentioned in the media. As an expert and teacher in the field of Sexual Medicine, I received several calls from news papers, TV channels, colleagues and students to know about the ‘Potency test’. “Injecting ‘Papaverin’ in Corpora Cavernosa of male penis induces ‘artificial’ erection. However, this does not prove the degree of sexual desire, urge or libido a person has and whether he can get an erection without this injection.

was the hostess dressed in a black floor-length gown, and there was her rather peculiar accent and speech, a mix of Hindi and English overlaid with definite hints of American. And every time she spoke, the decibel levels on the audio almost blew us away, or maybe it was just nerves. Then came the role of drums and the sound of a heraldic fanfare and lots of acrid-smelling smoke from a fog machine, and out of the chaos stepped Farhan Akhtar, biceps, triceps, deltoids and quadriceps intact, and we can vouch for the fact that he looked amazing. And he has wit, humour, patience and politeness, all the more prized because frankly, these are not

TECH-SAVVY: The charming Farhan at the cellphone launch.

“A ‘Penile Doppler study’ can assess flow of blood in the organ, but does not assess a man’s sexual desire/urge/inclination or libido. The same thing can be assessed by Angiography (Phalloarteriography) too, but angiography is an invasive procedure and involves risk. Neither does it assess sexual desire/urge/inclination or libido of a person. “The Serum Testosterone level can be measured bio-chemically in a laboratory. However, testosterone plays a very small role in ‘getting’ erection nor can it induce artificial erection in an unaroused person. Testosterone can increase Libido in a person but does not induce ‘erection’. “Oral medications such as ‘THE ‘GODMAN’: Potent or not? Who knows! commonly available among the people who comprise Indian celebs these days. Finally, after the photographers stopped clicking, a long time indeed because the digital age seems to have triggered off loads of professional insecurity among this particular category of the media, there was a q&a. One bright young person asked him how he felt about the younger generation of films stars and we could not help marveling at how rapidly people are considered “old”. Farhan Akhtar will be 40 in January and as we know, the world is being taken over by Justin Bieber and his teenage cohorts. By then, Farhan was responding to questions still patiently but with one eyebrow pitched permanently higher than the other. Too soon, the event (or at least ythe important part, ended and he was whisked off wrapped in a blanket of security leaving us curious to know whether he would be mobbed if he walked down the street alone. Probably not, because he tends to blend into the background like a chameleon, in the normal course! The cellphone? Sorry, we will be writing about that on other pages.

he Bangur Nagar police, on Wednesday, detained the two clean up marshals who were caught on camera allegedly misbehaving with a woman who was travelling in an autorickshaw at Malad. They were released after recording of their statements. The police could not arrest them as the victim has not come forward to file any complaint. According to the Bangur Nagar police, they identified the two men from postings on a social networking website where the woman's friend had posted the photo of the two men on a motorcycle leaning into the rickshaw where the victim was seated. The police launched their search for the men in the photo and found them to be working as BMC clean up marshals hired by a private

Ketan Talekar and Atul Thinghe. contractor. The two were identified and detained on Wednesday. The police recorded the statements of the men who claimed that they fined an auto rickshaw dry driver last Saturday for urinating on a public road. After fining the rickshaw driver they left the place on their motorcycle. The marshals said that they had a receipt (Pauti) to prove that they had fined the driver.

"We were talking to the rickshaw driver not noticing a woman was seated in the back seat. After talking to the driver, we drove off not even realizing that our photo had been clicked," said Ketan Talekar in his statement to the police. Ketan and Atul Thinghe were detained by the police as a preventive action and were later let off with a warning," said PSI Gaurakhnath Ghadge from Bangur Nagar police station. "The BMC officials had approached us to understand the case and left after getting the details," said H Bagul, senior police inspector of the Bangur Nagar police station. Ketan's father Krishna said that his son had been defamed after his photo had been carried on social networking websites. A poster with the photo had been put up at Malad railway station.

Engg student commits suicide A

22-year-old engineering student committed suicide by jumping off from his college building on Tuesday after the classmate he was allegedly having an affair with recently refused to continue the relationship. He was reportedly in a depression for the past few days and had stopped interacting with other friends in the college. The deceased, Omkar Chakravarthy, was a fourth year BTech student in Mukesh Patel College of Engineering, situated in Juhu. He was staying in a hostel near his college, while his parents lives in Chennai. The incident took place at around 4.45 pm when the lectures got over. Chakravarthy waited in the classroom and when all the students left, he jumped off from the seventh floor of the building. “We have recorded the

statement of several friends of Chakravarthy and came to know that he was having an affair with one of his classmates and both their parents were aware of the relationship. But a month ago, they separated as the girl did not want to continue the affair,” said senior police inspector Arun Bhagat of the Juhu police station. “The girl told him that she could not concentrate on her studies due to the friendship, but Chakravarthy wanted to continue it and went into a depression,” said another officer. “The jumping off from the building has been recorded in the CCTV footage of the college. It is a clear-cut suicide but our investigation are on. Chakravarthy's family arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday morning and the body was handed over to them after post mortem was completed at Cooper Hospital,” said Bhagat.

Four more gas-based crematoria to come in Mira-Bhayandar By Suresh Golani

A

dopting the policy of encouraging Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-based crematoria over conventional fuel wood, the civic administration has mooted a proposal to install gas fuelled fire chambers at four more Hindu crematoriums in the Mira Bhayandar region. The standing committee in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) gave its nod for setting up

Eco-friendly cremations the CNG- based units at Hindu crematoriums including those located at Bunder Wadi, Mira Road, Kashimira and Penkarpada. The proposal will now be tabled before the general body for final approval. This followed after repeated demands made by Shiv-Sena corporator Prashant Dalvi, on the issue of the gas based crematoriums and up-gradation of existing facilities at crematoriums in the twin-city. The MBMC will spend Rs.2.5

crore towards setting-up of the CNG crematoria project. It should be noted that the MBMC had introduced the Rs.45 lakh LPG-crematoria project at Bhayandar (West) four years back. “Gas-based chambers at crematorium will benefit the environment and definitely help in reducing felling of trees, besides causing a reduction in the amount of pollution in the area,” Dalvi said. It should be noted that for traditionally cremating a

body, nearly 300 to 350 kg of fuel wood is required. The quantum of fuel wood required is huge and at the same time the amount of pollutants released due to incomplete combustion in the conventional method is detrimental to the sustainability of bio diversity. The setting up of gas based crematoriums in the twin-city was a measure towards introducing a pollution-free and a cost effective cremation system, officials said.

f everything goes as planned, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will soon provide 100 per cent pure water to its residents. However, residents will have to pay a nominal charge for this facility. The TMC in collaboration with an NGO Water Life will install water purification projects at several places in Thane especially in slum areas where there are cases of water borne diseases due to contaminated water supply. Shyam Gadre, Executive Engineer, TMC Water Department said, “We have presented a proposal at the general body meeting of TMC and soon a tender will be issued for the same. The agencies which accept our criteria will be selected for this project.” Surya Dalal, a representative of Water Life said, “Our main aim is to provide safe drinking water to the general public. We have submitted our proposal to the TMC and when we get a clearance from them, we can start the work. Initially, we will start the work at 2-3 places, and as per the response of

the locals and the TMC, we will proceed further. We are running a similar project in Hyderabad as well."

The price... According to the Water Department of the TMC, the agency will charge Rs.10 per 20 liters of water while mineral water in the market is priced at Rs.12-20 for one litre.

Benefits of the project... Around 20 lakh people in Thane live in

slums where there are water theft cases and illegal water connections, which steal the income of TMC. These slums get their water supply from illegal pipeline connections. Some of these pipelines might be submerged in sewage lines and there is always a high possibility of water contamination which in turn causes fatal water borne diseases.

How the project will work... The TMC will provide Water Life with a water connection and an area of 10x10 meters, for which the NGO will have to pay the actual water charges and rent for the space. The NGO will treat the water with its Ozone and UV sterilization technology. Initially, the NGO will charge Rs. 10 per 20 liters of water and after receiving a positive response the rates might increase. As per the conditions of the TMC, the NGO will have to start this project in at least five slum areas and it can not sell this purified water to any other party in the open market.

MSRDC blames CMO for its indecision on coastal water transport

By Prashant Hamine

P

redictably the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has refuted the contention of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan that the MSRDC was yet to submit its file on starting water transport along the western coastline of Mumbai. It may be recalled that last week itself Chavan had made a statement to that effect. However, sources in the MSRDC disclosed that they had sent the file to the Chief Ministers office almost a month ago. Sources added that the MSRDC had already invited tender bids for the project and even short-listed the lowest tender bidder. “The file is currently held up in the Transport wing of the CMO. Moreover, the CM is yet to call for the meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Infra-

structure. There are several of our infrastructure projects that require clearance, so that tender process could be initiated”, sources added.

The state government had appointed MSRDC as nodal agency to implement the Passenger Water Transport (PWT) Project along west coast on BOOT basis in February 2002. Since then MSRDC had prepared the Detailed Project Reports (DPR), taking environmental clearances and inviting bids on three occasions. The west coast PWT project involves construction of terminals at Borivli, Marve, Versova, Juhu, Bandra and Nariman Point. The project has been billed as environmentalfriendly mode of transport, significant saving of travel time due to increased speed and reduced delays because of no congestion problems, reduction in air and noise pollution along the existing corridors and diversion of traffic on water transport will provide relief to local roads in the high density areas.

he use of Sections 381 and 381A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act by BMC officials for booking buildings or individuals violating prevention norms made by the BMC for public health and safety has been prevalent for some time now. But in August this year, the BMC has booked 92 societies/house owners in various parts of the city for not taking precautionary measures to keep mosquitoes from breeding in their homes or building premises, under Section 381B of the MMC Act, which unlike section 381, gives the offenders no chance to correct their shortcomings and makes them directly liable for legal actions. “We received orders from our seniors in July this year to start using Section 381B from August. Sections 381 and 381A give the defaulting individuals or societies some time to take the required corrective measures. It was only the failure to do so in the stipulated time that led the offenders to being summoned by the metropolitan courts. Under Section 381B, people not taking precautionary measures to prevent breeding of any kind of mosquito, directly face legal action without being given time to make the required amendments. Once we find the breeding spots, we issue an Inspection Report (IR) which clearly states that the concerned person or building will face legal action for this offence. Once the IR is issued, the summons comes within 10 to 15 days,” said Rajan Naringrekar, BMC Insecticide officer. “Previously, this section was never used as we believed that we should make people understand the importance of keeping their premises mosquito free by talking to them and spreading awareness through campaigns. But of late, we noticed that despite conducting several sensitisation programs and

awareness campaigns, people are not paying heed to what we say,” added Naringekar. K East ward, B ward and R South ward have the highest number of IRs issued in the month of August. While 14 IRs were issued at K East ward, 11 were from B ward and 10 were from R South ward. “We use this section only at places where there is a high prevalence of vector borne diseases inspite of people there being regularly told about precautiona r y methods to keep mosquito breeding at bay. It is for people who despite being sensitised are not doing the needful,” said Naringrekar. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Missing files: Govt. cornered by opposition

here could not be any defence on the part of the government when the coalgate missing files scam came for discussion in parliament. All the parties were united in accusing the government of its involvement in the scam worth Rs.1,80,000. The discussion clearly brought to light the government’s guilt in removing and destroying or hiding the files. The Prime Minister’s declaration a couple of days ago that “I am not the custodian of files” has evidently not impressed the opposition. The opposition charge was that the Prime Minister and other concerned authorities did nothing when they found the files missing. The fact that they did not file an FIR showed that they knew about the missing files but chose not to do anything about it. The missing files relate to the sale of coal blocks to several private parties. The CBI had first reported about the missing files when it was asked to probe into the scam. Cornered completely, the government cut a sorry figure as it hopelessly tried to explain away about the missing files. The Prime Minister is on a visit abroad and thus was spared huge embarrassment. It does not look like the opposition will allow the matter to rest since it has been given a big stick to beat the government with.

N business circles in Mumbai there seemed to appear on Wednesday a small, tentative sliver of hope in the unrelenting gloom that currently prevails. It found reflection on Twitter with Anand Mahindra wishing the new Governor of the Reserve Bank well with this tweet, “Never before has a new Reserve Bank Governor’s every action & utterance been watched so closely. Good luck in the fish bowl, Raghu.” From my friends in business circles I have learned that Raghuram Rajan is seen as a man who could perhaps succeed in taking some steps to save the Indian economy from further collapse. At the recommendation of a friend I read his book ‘Fault Lines’ when it came out a couple of years ago and found it readable and not written in the usual jargon that economists favour when they write books. But, I know little else about this man whose celebrity is of such an order that even his good looks have caused comment in the financial newspapers.

Corruption ruled the roost My only conversation with the new Governor occurred one snowy afternoon in Davos when he was on his way to one session and I to another at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting. He said he had read my column in India Today and I muttered something in return. Speaking of Davos reminds me of what I think of as the exact moment when India’s economic troubles began. It was in 2006 and India was so much the flavour of the season for international investors that the Indian business community had come up in Davos that year with a campaign called ‘India Everywhere’ to celebrate India’s arrival on the world stage as a possible new economic superpower. There was an India Soiree filled with raucous music, fashion shows and the smell of spicy kebabs. Bollywood songs drifted into the icy night out of the clubs on Davos high street and there were so many Indian ministers, journalists, businessmen and bureaucrats in that tiny snow-covered resort that it felt a little as if the whole of political Delhi had moved to the Alps. It felt good to be Indian in Davos that year but the feeling did not last long because already talk had begun about ‘inclusive’ growth with the implicit suggestion that the incredible growth rate of the economy for two decades had benefited only a handful of rich Indians. Davos-wallahs, as the venerable

Vinod Mehta called them disparagingly last week when he wrote a paean of praise to his hero, Sonia Gandhi. The truth is very different but you can only see it if you do not wear ideological blinkers. The truth is that whatever prosperity India has seen since it became an independent nation in 1947 has come as a result of these very ‘Davos-wallahs’ having done their bit to grow the economy after the license raj ended in 1991. The truth is that if there have been failures they have been entirely those of governance. If the Prime Minister had been able to

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh continue the reforms that he started as Finance Minister in P.V. Narasimha Rao’s government then the reforms he should have carried out in the past decade would have been to do with public services. Sanitation, healthcare, education reforms should have been what he concentrated on along with serious administrative reform. Instead, under orders from Sonia Gandhi he focused on investing all his time and money in exactly the sort of massive welfare programmes that kept India mired in poverty for 40 ‘socialist’ years. These schemes sound good on paper but in reality serve mostly to keep our poorest citizens dependent on handouts as they wallow in horrendous poverty. Meanwhile, ministers of the Government of India discovered that they could make money beyond their wildest dreams by extorting money from big business through deals to hand out coal mines and big infrastructure contracts. This is exactly what has happened in the second term of the SoniaManmohan government and ironically the blame for this has been put on big business. Anna Hazare and his followers, who wear

Strive for that supreme freedom -- Love O

NCE someone asked me which word in a man's vocabulary was the most valuable. My reply was, ‘Love’. The man was surprised. He said he had expected me to answer ‘soul’ or ‘God’. I laughed and said, "Love is God." Raising on the ray of love one can enter the enlightened kingdom of God. It is better to say that love is God than to say that truth is God, because the harmony, the beauty, the vitality and the bliss that are part of love are not part of truth. Truth is to be known; love is to be felt as well as known. The growth and perfection of love lead to the ultimate merger with God. The greatest poverty of all is the absence of love. The man who has not developed the capacity to love lives in a private hell of his own. A man who is filled with love is in heaven. You can look at man as a wonderful and unique plant which is capable of producing both nectar and poison. If a man lives by hate he reaps a harvest of poison; if he lives by love he gathers blossoms laden with nectar. If I mould my life and live it with the wellbeing of all men in mind, that is love. Love re-

larger ideological blinkers than almost anyone else, built their movement against corruption on the premise that the country’s wealth was being ‘looted’ by corrupt businessmen with the collusion of corrupt politicians. Far too many middle class Indians were seduced by this idea without questioning why India remained such a poor country in the decades when it was officials who controlled all natural resources. The truth is that governments do not have the money to invest in such areas as the mining of iron ore and coal, which is why private investment was allowed in the first place. But, on account of the former CAG (Comptroller & Auditor General) and his zeal to expose corruption the atmosphere became so filled with hysteria that Supreme Court judges started canceling major international contracts as if it was normal. One judgement resulted in the cancellation of 122 telecom licenses and made foreign investors realise that their money was not safe in India.

Sonia Gandhi delivers final blow Then came another judgement that closed all iron ore mines in Karnataka and caused more than 100,000 people to lose their jobs. The Government of India could have tried to persuade the judges that what they did had harmed the economy but this did not happen. Then, came the former Finance Minister’s decision to impose taxes with retrospective effect after the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Vodafone in a tax case. This made investors even more nervous because the decision indicated that the rule of the government in power was more important than the rule of law. The final blow has come in the form of Sonia Gandhi’s two favorite laws: the food security bill and the land acquisition bill. The message that goes out is that government will not cut public spending even if it leads to bankrupting India once more. So in this bleak landscape will the new Governor of the Reserve Bank be able to make a difference? Will he be able to take measures that will strengthen the rupee and encourage investment? Will he be able to restore some of the optimism that was such a characteristic of the Indian economy for more than 20 years? The truth is that nobody knows. The truth is that times are so hard at the moment that the future looks bleak despite one of the most celebrated economists in the world taking charge at the RBI.

NaMo gearing up to occupy PM’s kursi! NDA’s Prime Minister in waiting Narendra Modi seems to have already “elevated” himself to the post as he threw a challenge to the Prime Minister of India (whom he supposedly thinks to be the Prime Minister of Congress) as he gave a counter speech from Lalan College to the one given by Dr Manmohan Singh from Lal Qila on the Independence Day. What could have prompted him to do so? Was it a planned strategy? Well it seems so. With elections round the corner (2014), this was probably the last occasion before the 2014 elections when the Prime Minister would address the nation. This, NaMo thought, would be the best opportunity to confront the Prime Minister, so it seems. He is hungry for publicity.

He hardly cares whether it is negative or positive, he wants to be in the limelight. Now, should an occasion like Independence Day or Republic Day be used to earn brownie points? How justified is this new trend? What if NDA comes to power in 2014? Will one see a reversal of places on August 15, 2014? Will some Congress neta or for that matter of any other political party counter NaMo’s speech from Lal Qila from some remote college? By starting a new trend NaMo has given rise to something that may not even leave occasions like Independence Day from being politicised. — Abdul Monim, Vashi

ABSOLUTELY CONFIDENT! Modi sees himself as the best bet for BJP in the 2014 elections, and his posturings show he is aware there is nobody else available. EVERYBODY from BJP, including Sushma Swaraj and L.K. Advani outside, keep vigil of these areas to make easy money or getting sexual favours from the victims, who venture into the isolated areas. Once upon a time Vijay Merchants’ Thackeray’s Mills was providing employment to physically handicapped men and women. Merchant was kind enough to get the Man and Woman get married as well out of the funds provided for the rehabilitation of the less privileged class and differently-abled strata of society. Now the same place is misused by miscreants for their ulterior motive and it is time for the politicians, activists, bureaucrats and administration to bring about a change in the society comprising chawls and the hooliganism should stop at this level or else we can hear more and more cases of such cruelty to women in such isolated places. — Maniam C.K. Ramani, Kharghar

Letting him off lightly I’M appalled and outraged at the recent order of a Division Bench of the Bombay High Court reducing the sentence from life imprisonment to a paltry six years for a man convicted of burning his wife to death. It’s bad enough that the death penalty was not awarded in the first place, but this kind of liberalism by our courts will play havoc in a society already plagued by soulless barbarism in commitment of heinous crimes. It may be true that there was no pre-meditation in burning his wife, but that the man did so in a fit of anger does not translate into accidental death. He first located the kerosene, then poured it over his wife, and then struck a match (or lighter)—clearly a series of three separate and coordinated steps carried out consciously and willfully. In a case where even a death sentence might have been justified, to reduce a well-deserved life sentence to six years is to place the social evil of wife-burning on par with robbery and dacoity. — Phiroze Javeri, Mumbai

president Rajnath Singh said that the Gujarat riots of 2002 was unfortunate and it is wrong to blame the state chief minister Narendra Modi for that and Congress is playing divide and rule policy of Britishers by dividing people on the basis of caste and religion which is nothing but a sign of frustration on his part not to push his party among the people and create confidence due to infighting among its senior leaders which has been proved in recent time. BCCI stooping low to honour Sachin IT is surprising that the BCCI is bending over backwards to organise special short cricket series at home with the West Indies before our already announced tour to South Africa just to see that the once-great Sachin Tendulkar gets to play his 200th test match at Wankhede — he is two short of the figure at present. Interestingly, this is not to be taken as his ‘farewell series’ because the Little Master seems to still believe that he has a lot of cricket left in him and will announce his retirement to his fans when the time comes. The BCCI’s pampering of Tendulkar does appear too much since he has been in Team India from eternity and is the richest cricketer today, next only to M.S. Dhoni. He should have called it a day quite some time back and by hanging on still, he is only demeaning himself and blocking the place of a deserving younger player in the national team. So many cricket greats had retired gracefully like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and more recently Rahul Dravd and no one among them had staged such a nauseating drama after more than two decades in the game. — Dr. V. estination weddings, box invites, imported flowers and designer dresses may be the flavour of the season when it comes to weddings but all these things make it harder to deal with the depreciating rupee. You don’t have to compromise on your dream wedding though. Follow these tips by a few experts so you can have your perfect décor, trousseau, jewellery, hairdo, invites and photographs without spending an exorbitant amount on them. Read on as we tell you how to plan the perfect budget wedding.

Plan it ProPerly Candice Pereira and Jarret D'Abreo are the cheerful duo behind Marry Me, wedding planners who see to everything to do with your wedding to make it the perfect day. You can get in touch with them by logging on to www.marrymeweddings.in. In the meantime, Candice gives us a few budget wedding planning tips: l Consider having your wedding during off season. This way you can book the venue of your choice at a lower cost. l Rope in your friends and family to help. Maybe you have a friend who is a DJ and can put together a song list for your mehendi that you can play off an iPod. Or maybe you have a friend who is a great speaker and can help compere your events. l Get creative and spend time personalising the details, but put it together yourself. Make it a fun afternoon with your girlfriends to help make your save-the-date cards and assemble your giveaways. l Think of unique venues. Maybe you have access to a lovely bungalow or garden space which would be perfect for one of your events. It also gives your guests a nice mix of venues between hotel ballrooms and private spaces. l The honeymoon is all important, but you could plan a trip to a unique destination in India itself; there is so much to discover right here! Picture this Photographer Stuti Sakhalkar is the girl behind the wedding photography company, The Cheesecake Project. She offers photography services for weddings, couple shoots and films. If you want a wedding album with candid shots and beautiful pictures, drop her an email at stuti@thecheesecakeproject.com. She gives us tips for budget photography planning: l Assign responsibilities for the candid photographer as well as the photographer for documentation and the videographer. There is no point having 6-8 photographers all shooting the exact same thing. l If your candid photographer is someone like me, who will be photographing every ritual and covering all relatives, then you do not need a documentation photographer for the wedding rituals. The documentation or regular photographer can be hired only for the reception-stage pictures. This is what I usually advise clients who give me full responsibilities of their wedding shoot. l Do a photo-booth at fun events such as cocktails and sangeets. Have the photographer shoot only that instead of normal portraits of guests. This is a big hit with guests and also gives you something new to have in the album. This usually works out cheaper as the photographer doesn’t have to work the room as much. l For special shoots such as couple shoots, plan your shoot well with your photographer, with regards to outfit, location and time of day to avoid last minute hassles, costume colours clashing with the background location, harsh or low lighting and so on. l Most importantly, if you like the work of a photographer/videographer and want them to cover your wedding, book them as early as possible to save money and also before they are booked by another client.

Adorn the venue Wedding decorator Nitinn Raichura from Perfect Décor tells us, “Quality will always score over quantity. Weddings of a lifetime can be achieved even on a tailor-made budget. It’s often difficult for me to convince a client that a budget wedding doesn’t mean compromising on quality. This year, with increased prices and with recession staring people in the face, there will be an impact on weddings. In fact the effect is already visible with fewer events and even some cancellations. Everyone is looking for a budget wedding.” To organise budget décor, contact them at www.wedding decorators.com. He gives us venue and décor tips to make planning on a budget easier: l Opt for community halls, society compounds and school lawns instead of ballrooms and banquet halls. Keep the guest list to a minimum concerning the couple.

time. Practicality and wearability are important, so brides should incorporate pieces that are not just for ‘the day’ but things they can wear all their life. For example, you can buy a polki set or a detachable multi-layered piece which can be worn later for different occasions. l Instead of buying one huge neckpiece, buy three or four necklaces that can be worn together to look like a big piece. In the end you will have different jewellery pieces that you can use instead of being stuck with one really large piece. l Jewellery is a long-term investment. Pick timeless designs instead of trendy pieces. If something is in vogue today, it might be out of style tomorrow. You do not want to keep reselling your diamonds or getting your gold reset often. You lose about 10% of the value every time you resell or exchange the pieces. In case you have an intricately designed gold piece, remember that a significant amount is lost when gold is melted down and then re-moulded.

For your lovely locks

If you are booking a premium venue, confirm all hidden expenses and overheads before you book the place. l Confirm the venue eight months in advance to get a good deal. l Organise pre-wedding events such as sangeet, mehndi and cocktails at home or in your society compounds/terrace. This way you can cut down on invitees and overall cost. l For decorations, state your budget to the decorator and work out a plan together. l Avoid expensive, imported flowers and stick to local varieties. l

invite right Your invites are an important part of your budget, but are sometimes forgotten because you send them out before. However, Nitinn from Perfect Décor says this step is important as well. He gives us some tips: l Let it perform its basic function — to invite and guide the guest to the venue. l Give the elaborate card a miss and stick to simple, elegant designs. l E-cards are more popular these days. l Call reminders are cheaper than cards. l Give your number and email address so you and your guests can save on the cost of acceptance cards and postage.

trousseAu tussle Brides often go overboard with their >> For great wedding pictures such as this one, get in touch with Stuti from The Cheesecake Project

trousseau and later repent spending a bomb on something that they will rarely wear again. Experts from Peppermint Diva (available at Ogaan, Aza, Fuel and Amaara stores) tell you how to tighten your purse strings while buying your outfit. l Pre-plan the look that you want for all your functions — starting from the engagement ceremony, mehendi, to the day of your wedding. This keeps compulsive shopping at bay and you’ll find that last minute shopping leads to overspending. l While shopping for your trousseau, visit various exhibitions and store promotions to get a variety of options to choose from as per your budget. l Pick up clothes in different styles as you can mix and match them instead of picking up 10 different outfits. This will allow you to experiment with your look. l Don’t follow trends blindly. A particular trend may be in fashion now, but down the line in a few years, it may not be and it will be just lying in your wardrobe. Always buy outfits which are classic and simple. l Buy limited outfits for your trousseau and don’t go overboard. After all, how many times are you going to wear that super heavy lehenga in the future?

jewels & stones While jewellery can be an investment, there are still are chances of buying too much. Owner of jewellery brand Mirari (www.mirari.com) and jewellery designer Mira Gulati tells us how to save when you buy wedding trinkets. l The cost is always the key factor to planning a wedding. While any bride would love to be decked in diamonds set in pure white or yellow gold, it is not always pocket-friendly. Especially when you are planning an inexpensive wedding. Instead of wearing several pieces of jewellery, work with one big statement piece. l A bride should consider the style of her outfit and look for accessories that will complement it. Buy clothes with more embellishments, so even though you may be low on jewellery you will not lose your sparkle. l Jewellery lasts for a lifetime, so make sure you pick pieces that you can wear for a long

Hair styling is another aspect that brides tend to overspend on. Get in touch with celebrity hairstylist Jawed Habib at www.jhhairbeauty.com for a great wedding hairstyle. He gives us his tips to save yourself from spending too much on your locks: l A bride can opt for a pre-bridal hair package before the wedding, which includes hair cutting, hair spa and colour or texture transformation. Wedding packages are mostly much more cost-effective than opting for these treatments separately. l Using the right kind of shampoo, conditioner and styling products will help to maintain your hair and save on damage control treatments later. So, start taking care of your hair in advance. l On your wedding day, an elegant, classy and glamorous updo with a brooch and accessories looks great and the style is not too expensive to do. l For your reception, you can opt for an open hairstyle with volume, curls or straight look. All of these are inexpensive. l Using buns, extensions, brooches and accessories helps in a great way to have fabulous wedding day hairstyle without the bride spending too much, so make good use of them.

where’s the Food? Apart from discussions over how the bride and groom look, another talking point for guests is food at a wedding. Sarah Faad Dalvi from Bullet Biryani catering service, whips up delicious wedding food. Get in touch on www.facebook.com/BulletBiryani. She tells us how little things can prevent you from overspending on food. l Apart from having vegetarian starters with potato or paneer, pick chicken instead of mutton ones. When you serve meat that not everyone might eat, it will go to waste. l Give your caterer an approximate estimate of how many vegetarians and non-vegetarians you’re expecting. That will save you a lot of your money. l There’s no point in preparing a dish which is tasty but too spicy for most of your guests as the food will go to waste. These are small things, but they matter a lot. l Don’t have an elaborate dessert counter if you are having a small wedding. After people have eaten their dinner, they have little space left for dessert. So, limit how much you order for dessert. l These days, weddings have several starter counters. People are almost full by the time the main course arrives. Limit your starter spread if you don’t want the main course to go to waste.

Rollercoaster tycoon!

Managing a theme park — now, that’s a dream job! But for Pooja Shetty Deora, overseeing a part of the theme park Adlabs Imagica is a reality. Dev Goswami gets talking to her about her awesome job

W

e’re sure you are familiar with Adlabs Imagica. The adverts can be seen everywhere and those who have been to the entertainment park can’t stop talking about how great it is. Here, we catch up with Pooja Shetty Deora, who oversees the park’s food & beverage and marketing. She also supervises the film production business for Walkwater Media, which produced films such as Tere Bin Laden (2010) and Rita (Marathi, 2012). We talk to Pooja about managing an entertainment park, movies and her future plans. I am sorry for jumping straight to this, but I just have to ask… what is it like managing a theme park? Is it anything like the video game, Rollercoaster Tycoon? Actually, I have never played the game (laughs). But, it certainly has been a challenging experience. The park has been up and running for around five months and the whole concept took four years to come through. There were a lot of deadlines, a lot of pressure, but we were able to set up and I’m extremely happy about that. Adlabs Imagica is located quite far away from the city. Why do you think Mumbaikars should go that extra mile to visit the park? You should visit because we are bringing you something that you haven’t seen before. We have unique and never-seen-before attractions which makes a visit to Imagica completely worth it. As a person who handles a theme park and provides people with a source of entertainment, what do you think Mumbaikars define ‘entertainment’ as? Movies. I think movies are the main source of entertainment for people here. Under you, Walkwater Media has released the acclaimed Tere Bin Laden, a satirical movie that was highly appreciated. However, people nowadays seem to have a problem with satire… I don’t think so. If you give people a good subject, they’re willing to watch the movie. Things such as the story and content are important. If you deliver that, people would come watch the movie.

I was talking more about how people raise objections to satire. Do you think you can make such a movie again? Actually, I am currently involved in making the sequel of Tere Bin Laden! So, I guess that answers your question. Can you give us a gist of the movie? No, I can’t (laughs)! All I’ll say is that it will be good and that you should wait for it to come out. We recently carried a story on what people in our city feel about the state of affairs with regards to the Lower Parel gang rape incident. What are your views on it? I think a lot has already been said about it. What happened was

adlabs imagica

Touted as South Asia’s largest amusement park, Adlabs Imagica has been getting rave reviews from everyone who’s been there. The park, which is spread over 300 acres, is divided into sections such as India, Arabia, Viva Europa, Asiana and more, with each area showcasing the culture of that particular region. Apart from your usual suspects of joyrides and rollercoasters, Imagica plays host to a number of stage shows, street entertainment and restaurants. really unfortunate. However, making a statement is not the best thing to do; there are too many opinions around already. We need better infrastructure to protect women and I feel that in time, that will definitely happen. On the same lines, people always have a lot of views and advice on what the government should be doing. Being married to MP Milind Deora, have you ended up sharing your views on the state of the country? Yes, as a spouse that happens. I do know what he’s doing and he’s a good listener, not just with me but with everyone. He listens to a lot of people’s opinions. So, yes we do talk about our work and I do voice my opinions. What are your plans for the near future for Imagica as well as Walkwater Media? Well, right now I am very busy with the sequel to Tere Bin Laden. We’re also working on adding a water-park and hotels to Adlabs Imagica.

oing back to our roots is the new mantra in the fashion world. Several designers have lamented about how Indian weaves have been forgotten over a period of time and how they need to be brought back. Designer Harshita Chatterjee Deshpande says, “I think the most magical aspect of Indian weaves is the sheer diversity of thought, colour and story depicted, as well as the unique skill set that it requires from the craftsmen.” We get fashion designers to tell us about the different kinds of Indian weaves and what they’re all about.

weaving already dyed strands of fibres to create unique motifs. Aniket adds, “The intricate woven pattern forms an interesting textile for a luminous silk dinner jacket to throw over a simple LBD or teamed over in form of trench coat for brunch meets.”

kutchi Work Aniket says that no Indian design discussion can ever be complete without the mention of this vibrant textile and embroidery art form from Kutch. It is a unique combination of woollen threads and intricate cross and chain stitches. Aniket says that this weave is traditionally seen in Navratri costumes and boho bags, but can also be applied to urban jackets with zippers.

khadi We are all familiar with khadi — it’s not just a type of weave, it symbolises a movement which changed Indian history. Designer Shruti Sancheti says, “Khadi is a coarse, handspun fabric which is very versatile. It keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter; it can be starched for a better appearance and is a favourite among everyone from politicians to the fashion fraternity.” Khadi can be used to make draped dresses, tunics, jackets, saris and trousers.

Baluchari is famous for portraying the royal lifestyle and so, it’s considered to be a regal weave. Harshita tells us, “Its best feature is that it uses human brocade figures for decorating the pallu and borders of saris. What makes this weaving style more elegant is the use of fine quality silk and silver zari work. Currently, you see designs such as a pleasure boat with love birds, animal figurines, traditional marriage or other customary practices and kalka motifs using Baluchari.”

Tejasvi Desai gives you some quick tips 1. high-quality material Be careful when picking your dress because lace may have a cheap look to it. Choose high quality material so that it has the right amount of elegance. 2. coloured lace For a fun look, steer clear of black and white lace dresses and choose bright reds and pinks. Team your coloured lace with neutral accessories. 3. keeP it SimPle Lace has a heavy look to it, so keep everything else to a minimum. Wear your hair loose to keep the overall look easygoing and fun. Jewellery should also be simple. You can select gold, diamond or crystal pieces, but stay away from pearls to keep your ensemble modern. 4. go Subtle With the Shoe Your shoes could match the colour of your dress or you could opt for metallic platform sandals or nude pumps. 5. carry a handbag Don’t leave home without one. I don’t know if it’s just me, but those pockets on her dress are very unfortunately placed. The dress wants to be edgy but for some reason, it just doesn’t manage to impress us. The khaki/ black combo also makes the usually radiant Sonam look dull. Cute boots though.

Guess who’s all ready for the festive season? There was a high risk of this outfit swamping her, but Amrita carries it off with class. We love the vibrancy and feel that it manages to look colorful but not gaudy. Even the elaborate neckline manages to fit in somehow.

While this dress is certainly more boudoir than Bollywood, we can’t help but feel that Mandira manages to pull it off. While it would be a complete no-no on pretty much any other star, with her cropped hair and bubbly personality, this illusion dress manages to look pretty fun.

Eeks! This outfit is a major fail. Forget the garish mullet top and that hideous belt that does nothing for her figure, it’s those ill-fitting trousers that really irk us! Did she not look in a mirror? Even her hair looks like a tangled mess. Not a good look, Tisca.

This is the perfect example of how festive wear can take over an otherwise pretty looking lady. The red and gold combination is a classic, but here it looks garish and costume like. There’s too much shine and some seems to have made it to her face as well. Tone it down!

« CAREER ADVICE creeped ouT by ‘female only’ ads? here’s hoW To filTer I’ve been on the lookout for a new job for two months and I am intrigued and shocked by some of the job postings I’ve come across. Many of the job postings, especially vacancies related to client servicing, marketing or public relations, clearly mention that they want ‘females only’. My instinct tells me to avoid applying to these jobs because they sound creepy. I really need a job but I barely apply to any because of this line. What should I do? — priya shah, Thane dear priya, I understand the dilemma you are in because all of us have gone through this at some point or the other during our job hunts. The fields you have mentioned often require an appealing personality, which by default, is translated to a physically appealing person and hence narrowed down to ‘females only.’ However, a lot of illegal and shady businesses also post such ads to lure women to come down for interviews — so you are right to avoid such places. Instead of blindly ignoring the ‘female only’ ads, do a thorough background check of the company that has posted the ad and if you are still unsure, take a friend along with you for the interview, in case you are shortlisted for one. Good luck in your job hunt.

but I don’t think I am cut out for it. I tried discussing my problems with her but she wasn’t understanding about it. And the very next day, several people on my team approached me about being unhappy at work and I was put on the spot. I hate my friend for telling on me, but I don’t know how to confront her or what to do about this job either. Please help. — isha Taneja, lower parel dear isha, Equations between friends often change once they move out from the classroom to the workplace. Your friend doesn’t seem to be the person you knew and has clearly broken your trust by sharing your dilemma with the entire team. I don’t see the point in you confronting her about this because she might just start a gossip chain in the office based on your reaction. Just let her know that what she did wasn’t nice but do not give her any more reaction. Refrain from discussing any work related issues with her so that such an incident doesn’t happen again. As far as your job is concerned, I suggest you find another one before quitting the one you have. You might be dissatisfied with it because you have just joined, perhaps by the time you search for a new one you might begin to like your work.

Me and my friend have recently landed the same role in the same office. She seems to love the job,

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? read on... I am an up and coming model and I’m super confident and also know that I am super hot... I mean, I am really hot. Everywhere I go, I literally stop men in their tracks. Sometimes it gets too much, but what to do?

I am constantly asked out of course, but I am rather picky. Last week I shot my portfolio...

>> Splitting up with your partner can get tricky if you lived with him. Read on to find out how to do it best

A

s if breaking up wasn’t hard enough, you now also need to figure out how you are going to move out of the house that you and your partner shared. You both probably moved in together because marriage was on the cards or you thought that your man was “The One.” This is clearly not a mild heartbreak, so every step of the move out post breakup is delicate and a wrong turn will make things much harder. We tell you how to go about it the right way.

Plan ahead If you're planning to initiate the split, try to anticipate likely problems and get your thoughts in order before you break the news to your man. Think about important decisions you will have to make, such as deciding who gets the apartment, how you're going to divide shared belongings and how you’re going to manage shared finances. Make sure to give your partner time to think about those things before you sit down to discuss logistics.

Be civil Breaking up is hard enough, but going through a breakup while living together can be emotionally draining. As much as

your anger might instigate you to fight, remain as calm and respectful as possible. This will make discussions and negotiations about dividing your things a little easier to manage. Many couples who break up continue living together because they cannot afford a new place. If that proves to be true for you as well, you want to be able to co-exist on respectful terms until one of you moves out.

ResPect each otheR’s PeRsonal sPace As a couple, you took your shared space for granted, but now that you’ve broken up, you both are going to need more privacy to deal with the breakup. Discuss where you will sleep and times when you can agree to leave each other home alone so that you can be free to privately vent to friends and family on the phone, pack your things and deal with your emotions.

Make a clean BReak While you’re still living together, you may catch yourself falling into your old romantic roles and you may even be tempted to have sex. Things will go smoothly if you stick with the decision to break up and don’t confuse yourself or your partner by behaving in ways that

might imply a reconciliation that isn’t going to happen. If you find it hard to be around your partner, spend less time at home and try to expedite plans for one of you to move out.

seek suPPoRt When you’re breaking up and living together, most people feel isolated and lonely. This is a good time to reach out to your friends or family members who can help you deal with your hurt feelings and some of the logistics, including helping you look for another apartment, move or redecorate if you’re staying put.

My best friend has recently lost a ton of weight and she looks great! The problem is that because of intensive workouts and a strict diet, her assets have shrunk too and she’s really bummed out about it. I am a C cup and whenever I show a little cleavage, she publically announces that I need to stop wearing padded bras, which embarrasses me. Grace, I do not! But, I can hardly prove

Wanna grab a quickie... coffee that is hahaha! Err, actually I was just going for a cup...

coMPRoMise on the details There are many decisions you will have to make in order to be on your own after living together. You need to discuss how you are going to handle your shared items, pets, the apartment, friends, current bills and outstanding personal loans. That’s a lot for two people who just broke up to agree about. Remember, it’s a give and take, so try to be flexible and compromise in the interest of reaching an agreement and keeping things as amicable as possible for as long as you live under the same roof.

80:20 Scheme Guidelines Would Adversely Affect Real Estate Sales, Say Developers However, experts believe impact would be short term and sales would pick up eventually By Mayura Shanbaug

R

BI’s circular on Tuesday issuing guidelines on innovative housing loan product – upfront disbursal of housing loans has invited criticism from the developer community all over the country and more so in Mumbai. In the scheme, developers were using the credit line of customers, after customer pays his own contribution and the 75% or 80% loan component was coming through the customer on his loan credentials and merits. Consumers availed the loan from the bank, facilitated by the developer and the entire money went to the developer kitty without actual construction work being in progress. This was similar to the scheme of 10/90 which was prohibited in 2009-10 or the Advance Disbursement Facility (ADF) schemes which created many problems as also created a speculative trend. Mumbai, NCR and some select micro markets across other major locations, are the markets that are expected to see the impact of this directive as this trend was becoming very popular to attract sales. “The RBI’s decision to disallow banks from granting loans for

under-construction projects through innovative schemes will adversely affect the sale of projects where such schemes were prevalent,” said Anshuman Magazine, Chairman & MD, CBRE South Asia Pvt. Ltd. “No doubt banks should do their due diligence and assess risks before agreeing to fund these schemes. However they should be allowed the flexibility of such schemes which encourages more people to own homes,” he said. Incidentally, the RBI has curtailed many such schemes of the real estate industry whose liquidity has been badly affected over the last 2-3 years. According to Lalitkumar Jain, Chairman, CREDAI, the Reserve Bank of India should consult stakeholders before issuing such circulars. “The Housing Finance Institutions or Banks safeguard their interest while devising such instruments. Abruptly issuing such circulars, advising bank against established practices only harm the sentiments and disrupts business plans. This at the end creates setbacks for projects affecting end consumers,” he said. Now with the RBI circular issued , banks have been advised disbursement on behalf of the consumers, by using the construction linked

progress plan method. Sanjay Dutt, Executive Managing Director, South Asia, Cushman & Wakefield, believes under-construction projects are expected to slow down the current ongoing sales. “A notification of this nature sets buyers to seek further clarifications from developers and/or experts to understand the complete implications of these home loan schemes. The RBI has acted responsibly by introducing this directive as it is trying to protect the interests of buyers and lending banks in such deals,” Dutt said. However, Dutt believes that the impact would be short term and sales volumes would pick up once the real estate market witnesses other promotional schemes or correction of prices which would eventually help sales till such time the overall economic scenario improves. In a statement issued by NAREDCO, Navin Raheja and Sunil Mantri stated that the new move which is initiated by RBI will be good in the long term for the industry which will also curb the speculative trend in the realty sector and will actually protect the buyer’s interest wherein payment will be only received as per actual construction progress.

Necessity of healthy communication

MY girlfriend and I love each other a lot. But whenever there is a problem, she doesn’t talk and puts on a poker face. She also refuses to answer any of my questions. Sometimes I know what is wrong, but she refuses to talk to me. The problem could be anything. She tends to leave problems that are serious to the last minute. Is there a way I can get her to open up, so that problems will be solved? Something I can do for here to forget her worries. It’s so frustrating trying to get her to open up to me and I can’t figure out why. The way your girlfriend responds to problems is Dr. Rajan B. Bhonsle definitely not healthy for the relationship. in the relationship manifold. For a meaningful relationship to develop, both of you need to clearly express all your inner most needs and feelings to each other with the trust that you will be understood, and at the least not misunderstood. If a conversation about the necessity of open and healthy communication does not improve things between both of you then do not waste time. See a counsellor immediately to explore the dynamics between both of you that impede communication.

Sex and IUD

I AM a mother of a three-month-old boy. He is my first child. My friend has advised me to use an IUD as a birth control method. What is an IUD? How does it work? How effective and safe is it? How to use it? Does it come in the way of enjoying sexual intercourse? Kindly guide. An IUD (Intra-uterine device) is a small object made of plastic, copper or stainless steel. ‘Copper T’ is one such IUD that is shaped in the form of an alphabet “T”. Your doctor places it inside the uterus. The arms of the Copper T

contain some copper, which stops fertilization by preventing sperms from making their way up through the uterus into the fallopian tubes. If fertilization does occur, the IUD would prevent the zygote (fertilized egg) from implanting in the lining of the uterus. The IUD can stay in your uterus for up to 2 to 10 years. The IUD is 90 99% effective at preventing conception. It requires visits with your doctor to have it inserted and to make sure you are not having any problems. The upside is that once a doctor places it inside your uterus, you cannot feel it and can forget about it for 2 to 10 years. Moreover they are very cost-effective. The downside of IUDs is chances of pelvic infections, a higher risk of contracting STDs and excessive menstrual bleeding. An IUD does not interfere in any manner in enjoying sexual intercourse as it is within the uterus and not in the vagina. Beware of fraud, fake emails: I-T to taxpayers N

EW DELHI: After alerting taxpayers about fraudulent emails promising fake refunds and other services, the Income Tax department has now alerted people against fake mobile applications that compromise confidential financial information. The department has warned taxpayers that illegal ‘mobile applications’ circulating in the webworld for smartphones, especially Android and BlackBerry phones, “may not be according to the department’s data structure” and parameters. “Filers (people who file tax returns) using them are doing this at their own risk,” the department said in its recent advisory is-

sued to taxpayers. The fake mobile applications, according to sources, use the name and purpose of I-T returns to conceal their fraud identity and promise the gullible taxpayer in sharing his or her personal details as done under the legal I-T filings system. The I-T department, over the last few years, has constantly alerted taxpayers that the department never asks for detailed personal information of any person through emails or any other mode of communication on the Internet. “The Income Tax department does not request detailed personal information through e-mail. The I-T department does not send e-mail

requesting your PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts,” the department had earlier issued the disclaimer. “It is important to inform and alert taxpayers in this age of Internet-based communications. With a spurt been seen in possession of smartphones, such fake applications and solicitations should be guarded against by taxpayers,” a senior I-T department official said. The department’s technology engineers are also in coordination with the national agency of computer and cyber security sleuths and anti-hacking agencies to weed out these issues, they said.

ODHPUR: The bail plea of controversial spiritual guru Asaram Bapu, accused of allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, was yesterday rejected by a Jodhpur court after the prosecution raised strong objection to setting him free. The District and Sessions Judge (Rural) Manoj Kumar Vyas dismissed the bail plea after two days of hearing arguments by Asaram’s counsel K.K. Manan and perusing prosecution’s detailed reply. The court rejected the defense counsel’s arguments raised over the FIR, medical report and statement of the girl who was sexually assaulted, Additional Advocate General Anand Purohit told PTI. Asaram, 72, was sent to jail on Monday after he was remanded in 14-day judicial custody by a court here. Asaram was arrested in Indore following an FIR lodged by the victim that she was sexually assaulted by him. Asaram’s counsel alleged that the police had worked under the pressure of media and prepared FIR in a hurry. He contended that the FIR against Asaram does not stand as there are several lacunae in it. He has been booked under sections 376, 342, 506 and 509 of the IPC, section 8 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and sections 23 and 26 of the Juvenile Justice Act in connection with the alleged assault. The defence claimed that the

victim was not minor as was being claimed and in fact was an adult and so the charges under POSCO against Asaram also do not stand. Asaram was arrested amid high drama on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday in Indore and brought here on Monday for interrogation. He has denied the charges. He has cleared a potency test conducted on him at the SN Medical College here. To recreate the incident, police had also taken to his Manai Ashram, near Jodhpur, where the girl was allegedly sexually assaulted. Opposing the bail plea, the prosecution said the ongoing probe in the case will be affected if he was freed. If let off on bail Asaram will try to influence the investigations as he had already tried to influence the police, it told the court.

Warship Admiral Gorshkov to be handed in November N

EW DELHI: The long-delayed aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov is planned to be handed over to the Indian Navy around mid-November in Russia where it has achieved significant milestones such as night operations of fighter aircraft during its ongoing sea trials there, reports PTI. The Russian side has assured that they were working towards handing over the warship, which is delayed by almost five years, by the middle of November as they would have completed their trials by that time, sources said here. An Indian delegation led by Defence Secretary Radha Kant Mathur was in Moscow in Monday and it was also assured about the mid-November delivery schedule, they said. The delegation was in Moscow as part of visits to prepare ground for the Indo-Russian Intergovernmental Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation meeting in Russia in mid-October where defence Minister A.K. Antony will hold talks with his counterpart there.

The warship now rechristened INS Vikramaditya is completing sea trials and is expected to return to the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk there in next few weeks, sources said. The Gorshkov, if handed over to India as per schedule, is expected to reach India only in January next year, where it will be deployed at the strategic Karwar naval base in Karnataka. The issue of the mishap on the INS Sindhurakshak is also learnt to have come up for discussion during the meetings but India has decided that it will involve Russian or any agency in the probe only after the Navy Board of Inquiry is completed. The two sides viewed the progress of the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft whose preliminary design phase was completed in June this year and are discussing the issues over pricing of the final design contract. The two countries also discussed a number of other Navy and Army projects including the supply of ammunition for tank and artillery units of the land force.

Paes, Stepanek enter semis

NEW YORK: Veteran Indian tennis star Leander Paes and his Czech partner Radek Stepanek advanced to the U S Open men's doubles' semifinals after a hard-fought win in the last-eight stage here. The fourth-seeded Indo-Czech pair defeated the fifth seeded combination of Pakistan's Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer 6-1 6-7 (3) 6-4 in a match which lasted more than two and a half hour. They will now be up against topseeded American brothers Mike and Bob Bryan, who got the better of the 12thseeded British pair of Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray 7-6 (7), 6-4 in their quarterfinal match. Paes and Stepanek started off well and broke their rivals twice, while holding their own serve, to clinch the opening set in just 33 minutes. But they were stretched quite a bit in the remaining two sets which took almost an hour each to conclude. In the second set, neither of the two teams conceded a single break point. Even though Qureshi and Rojer committed three double faults but fought hard enough to equalise and keep themselves in the match. The third set was also closely-contested but Paes-Stepanek converted an allimportant break point while Qureshi and Rojer frittered away the only one they got as the Indo-Czech pair sealed the issue.

EW YORK: World number one Novak Djokovic raced into the US Open quarterfinals for the loss of just three games while defending champion Andy Murray was again involved in a four-set duel. Top seeded Djokovic, the 2011 champion, wrapped up a place in his 18th successive Grand Slam quarter-final when he crushed Spanish world number 43 Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 in just 79 minutes yesterday. Andy Murray, the third seed, reached the quarter-finals for a third successive year with a 6-7 (5/7), 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over Denis Istomin, the 64thranked Uzbek. Djokovic will next tackle Russian 21st seed Mikhail Youzhny, a semi-finalist in 2006 and 2010, over whom he has an 53 career lead. Youzhny carved out a four-hour, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, 7-5 win over 2001 champion Lleyon Hewitt after trailing 4-1 in the fourth set and 5-2 in the fifth. Li, the 2011 French Open champion, overcame nervous feelings for a 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2 victory over Russian 24th seed Ekaterina Makarova. Reigning French Open champion Williams is 8-1 all-time against Li but was tested 7-5, 7-5 in their most recent matchup last month in a US Open run-up semi-final at Cincinnati. "She is playing some of the best tennis of her career," Williams said. "It's going to be a tough match." India play Nepal in search of semifinal berth in SAFF C’ships

But with the lacklustre performance they have dished out so far, it would not be easy for Wim Koevermans men to achieve that against a team which will have overwhelming crowd support. Having opened their campaign by scrapping past Pakistan who gifted a goal and then almost being beaten by Bangladesh before managing a last-gasp equaliser yesterday, India never looked like a team which would defend its title.
