ired with having to constantly complain about issues and problems of their suspended principal to the Mumbai University (MU) and the government, the students of Siddharth College of Commerce and Economics yesterday conducted a press conference against the government, the varsity and their suspended principal, claiming that their complaints have been completely ignored. Though the students had approached the varsity several times and have even filed cases against their suspended principal, no final decision has been arrived at for several months. It may be recalled that Dr. Krishna Patil, former principal of Siddharth College, who was suspended by the State Education Department of Maharashtra on June 24 this year for charging extra fees to students, continued to withdraw college money for his personal purposes. Patil has also allegedly taken the teachers’ muster into his custody. Even though the college, under sec-

Despite tight police security, students and teachers of the college claim that no support has been provided by the police force to enable the management to
take action against the principal. The People Education Society, which runs the Siddharth College of Commerce, suspended principal Patil after Vitthal Basu Chavan, an SY BCom student of the college, registered a case against him for charging additional fees. Chavan had registered a case in the High Court
as well as with the Students’ Grievance Committee of the Mumbai University. Even after the academic year reaching almost mid-way, students claim they have not been issued their identity cards, and are confused about whom to think of as their principal, because the suspended principal comes to the college and sits in the principal’s cabin, while the current principal comes and occupies another cabin. The extra fee money which Patil had charged has not been refunded as yet. The ADC spoke to Vitthal Chavan, who is students’ representative, Siddharth College of Commerce and Economics, who said, “More than seven months have passed but our issues have been sidetracked by the MU and the government. Where are we students supposed to go and complain? Here the suspended principal enters the college and captures the principal’s cabin, and on the other hand we are still waiting for return of the money which

wo out of four men, who allegedly kidnapped a bargirl over a failed relationship with one of them, were held by Mumbra cops after they foolishly approached the police to file a stolen vehicle complaint. As the quartet pushed the victim into their Maruti Swift and drove off, they were blocked by two bikers who chased the vehicle after hearing the girl screaming for help. The accused got out of the car and fled away in the ensuing commotion. Interestingly, the decision of two of the accused to lodge a stolen vehicle complaint so as not to arouse
suspicion gave their game away, as the cops already knew about the car due to a wireless alert sent to all police stations. Around 8:30 pm on Wednesday, Sonia Ghazi (26), was allegedly forced into a car with four male occupants, which then headed towards the highway. Near Mumbra railway station, Sonia’s screams for help were heard by Zulfikar Khan (60) and Asad Sheikh (24), who chased the car and intercepted it. Pintu Jaiswal (24) and Fateh Sheikh (42), along with two others took advantage of the commotion and ran away from the spot. Pintu and Fateh then went across to the Vartak Nagar
police station and lodged a car theft complaint there. Officers however became suspicious as the car’s description given by them was very similar to the one announced in the wireless alert circulated amongst all police stations after the two bikers had stopped it. The Vartak Nagar cops then informed their Mumbra counterparts and Jaiswal and Sheikh were arrested. The kidnapping however was not premeditated and was a spur-of-the-moment reaction by Jaiswal during an argument with Sonia, who is a bargirl. “The two had begun a relationship and Jaiswal Continued on pg 8 «

OPINIONS
Do you think the new RBI governor, Raghuram Rajan, can revive India’s economy?
Rohit Bhatia Research analyst Whether or not he will revive India’s economy only time will tell, but he does seem quite optimistic about doing so.
Santosh Nair Businessman I really hope he does. India’s future looks quite dim at the moment. I hope Rajan has a master plan for the country’s revival and will help business and trade to flourish.
Ritika Mishra Student I guess so. From what I have read in the newspapers, his academic and professional background looks pretty impressive. He should be able to do it for us.
Neeraj Kale Writer The country has been reeling under economic pressures for quite some time now, and I think it will take a while for it to regain its strength. It may not necessarily be about a new governor, its about the economic conditions around us. Meenakshi Sharma Student I don’t think so. I think it is more about the politicians than the RBI governor. How much ever qualified he is, nothing is ultimately going to help us unless our politicians wish for it.

ome Sunday and all roads in Bandra would lead to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, more commonly known as Mount Mary Church for the weeklong Bandra Fair. The fair which usually starts on the Sunday following September 8, witnesses a huge sea of devotees flocking to the Basilica. With just two days left for the fair, road from Mehboob Studios up the hill leading to the church are getting prepared to be lined with stalls selling candles, toys, fancy t-shirts, halwa to pickles of all varieties, black gram, to Goan, Kerala, Mangalorean delicacies and sweetmeats. Apart from stalls selling religious items, there will be a few Marathi and Konkani songs, while some are where one can try one’s luck in a game of skill. This year, a swanky metallic structure called ‘hanger’ instead of the bamboo shed which has been erected every year for the last 26 years on the premises, will greet devotees. The structure uses a new German technology which is still uncommon as only a few have been able to access it so far. Sunil Peter Solanki, contractor of the decorating the church premises said, “This year we have replaced the old bamboo props with aluminum alloy which is stronger than

the usual props. The aluminum alloy props are rust-resistant and the fabric covering the structure is heatproof and water resistant so that the devotees are protected in case of rain. Even though this is a very expensive affair, I am not going to charge much from the church as a contribution of my love for Mother Mary. The church said that they would still want to give me some amount.” Solanki added, “This year I can assure that the devotees will have a

very trouble-free view of the mass and other proceedings in the church unlike the usual bamboo props that object the view of the devotee.” The stall owners have lined up across the roads on both sides. Only stalls erected within the boundaries of the basilica come under its jurisdiction, all other activities beyond that is organized and controlled by the local municipal corporation. “The preparations are almost
completed and only some final finishing work is remained, which will be completed by this night. Since the festival this year coincides with the Ganesh festival, we are not expecting a big crowd. Yet, we don’t want to take chances and so we have kept all arrangements in place so that no person is inconvenienced,” an official of the church said. He further added, “The official Feast is celebrated over an Octave that is an eight-day period, from the Sunday after September 8 to the next Sunday. And this eight-day celebration is preceded by a nineday ‘novena’ of prayer directed to the Virgin Mary. That makes the Bandra Feast last for a total of 17 days. During the novena, masses are held in the mornings and evenings; during the octave, masses are only in the mornings, leaving the Basilica free for ‘darshan’ especially for those of other faiths.” Fr. Aniceto Pereira, Vice-Rector of Mount Mary’s Basilica said, “This year, we have followed all instructions of the Mumbai Police, Fire Brigade and civic authorities. Even though, the fair coincides with the Ganesh festival, we believe that there won’t be any fall in the number of devotees at the church. We have made all arrangements for the devotees so that they are not inconvenienced in anyway. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

NAVI MUMBAI’S OWN HOTSPOT?
SPECIAL REPORT
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013 By Khushboo Panjabi
I
n the aftermath of the Shakti Mills outrage in Mumbai, it is but natural that attention will be focused on similarly under-patrolled places not only here but in the satellite city townships. In Navi Mumbai, there is one such place that looks like a disaster waiting to happen. For the past decade at least, the Mafco Factory in Turbhe, Sector 18, has been lying closed. The 15,960 sq metre stretch of land which has three entrance gates, is a lonely place which has become an adda for drug addicts, eunuchs and prostitutes. They visit regularly every night, and after 6.30 pm, the place virtually becomes the possession of anti-social elements. A single security personnel in plainclothes is ostensibly on duty outside the premises on the road. He is paid by a Mafco official who comes once a month to attend to this chore. A trader of the neighbouring Mafco market confessed that the place makes them easy, more so since the heinous crime that took place on August 22 in Mumbai. “The Shakti Mill incident has petrified us, because here also the same things happen. There are drug addicts, criminals and who knows what other illegal activities taking place here. The only question which goes on in our mind now is - are we waiting for a terrible crime to happen before we expose the place to the light of publicity?” According to the trader, patrolling is done on a “regular basis” by the police. However, it would seem that this patrolling is done only during

who usually behave as if they have nothing to lose! There are very few residential buildings here, except for two, one opposite the abandoned complex, the other further down the road. Residents in the buildings remain tight-lipped when asked whether they have ever noticed the goings-on in the old factory. However, one lady said she did not dare send her daughter out of the house after 6 pm for fear of the place. Yet Turbhe’s Sector 18 is just seven minutes walk from the busy Sanpada station, connecting with the highway towards Pune. This is not Navi Mumbai’s only dangerously under-patrolled spot. There are several such, including the lane near the NRI Complex in Seawoods where the Sandhya Singh murder, the Turbhe railway station road, Belapur fort, Parsik Hills at CBD Belapur, the lane behind Fortis hospital in Vashi, mini seashore at Vashi and the Sagar Vihar area, also in Belapur. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in
the day and not at night when the denizens of the underworld take it over. The trader says they have in the past asked the police to take action against the activities that go on, but the response has been inadequate. No-one wants to handle drug addicts
The Central Bank of India’s branch located inside the Mafco Market, Turbhe, Sector 18 , shut since the past 5 years.
Inside the Mafco factory, there is plenty of room for mischief. They include abandoned premises which once housed a State Bank of India and a Central Bank of India, more than 5,000 sq metres in area, which are also now closed for the past five years. The Mafco market trader was especially critical of the hawkers who sit outside their complex selling vegetables
and fruit. “In the evening, many of them, both men and women, disappear inside the factory to take drugs”, he insisted. According to sources, the state’s finance department is now in the process of completing the closure. The land on which the Mafco factory stands was allotted to it by CIDCO on lease for 99 years. Officials of the once vibrant organization, which stood for Maharashtra Agro and Food Processing Corporation, once had 56 stalls across the city but the company is now practically defunct. All that seems left of it are stalls along footpaths in Mumbai,
now being used for other purposes. The ADC contacted Sharad Trimbak Karve, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at his Fort office to ask him why the place was left dangerously neglected. He said, “We are in the process of returning the Mafco factory land back to CIDCO. We understand the mindset of the people, especially when it comes to the safety of girls, and that there are no lights in the locality. But the movement of people around the factory on the road makes it quite safe.” There are plenty of people who would contradict his assertion.

nderworld gangster Chhota Rajan has decided to pay tribute to the film industry on it’s completion of 100 years through Ganpati decorations which will be showcased at the Sahyadri Krida Mandal in the Tilak Nagar area of Chembur. Bollywood’s connection with underworld has never been hidden and its relationship has caught people’s eyes for decades especially during festivities. With the decoration cost going into crores of rupees, Rajan has decided to give it a Bollywood theme. The celebrations at Tilak Nagar have a different theme every year. While last year the theme was kid’s attraction Chhota Bheem, this year it is based on Film Industry for its completion of 100 years in India. On checking the gas cylinder, they realized there was a leakage in the cylinder, and promptly rang up the emergency number. All they got to hear was, “Keep the cyclinder in an open space as we can only help you in the morning. A lot of efforts have been taken so that the mandal looks like film city and grabs people’s attention. “With the statue of Dadasaheb Phalke, the initiator of Indian cinema and portraits of stars like Raj Kapoor , Amitabh Bachchan and famous film scenes in the interior and the look of CST station and Rajasthan in the exterior is all set to give it a full filmy effect”, said Prashant, the Art director of the mandal. The main attraction of the decoration this year is the Kapoor family as RK Studios is located in Chembur. Like every year, this year too, many well known celebrities are expected to vivist the pandal. Jitendra, Nana Patekar, Vivek Oberoi, Anil Kapoor, Jackey Shroff and also from the Marathi film industry Sachin Khedekar, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Saraf, Sonali Kulkarni any many others are expected to turn up at the venue. This is the 37th year of the
mandal. For several years, the mandal has been in controversy for the donations, said to be funded by Chotta Rajan and its ever increasing size. If sources are to be believed, Chhota Rajan had wished for something years ago. On fulfillment of the wish, he vowed that despite living in any corner of the world he would have a Ganesh mandal every year in Tilak Nagar during Ganesh Chaturthi. Although the president of the mandal, Rahul Wananj denies it saying, “It is all rumours, as he is born and brought up here, so he is being linked. The donations are gathered from the people living in the society”. Regardless of denials by trustees, it is a known fact that Rajan funds the mandal, and has been doing so for the past three decades. If one may recall, the mandal in the 80s quite audaciously used to display the initials of Chhota Rajan as ‘CR’ on the walls of the pan-

Gas leak? Handle it yourself! Family in Virar receives leaking LPG cylinder and calls emergency number only to be told to manage somehow and to deal with the situation on its own With no instructions available on what to do in situations like leaking gas cylinders and those manning emergency helpline numbers being ignorant themselves, Mumbaikars are having a risky job of dealing with gas leakage on their own. Ot must be noted that more than 500 LPG gas cylinders operators distribute thousands of cylinders everyday all across the city. The gas leakage at the Ingle home happened when Hruday Ingle got back from work, and his fam-
ily complained about the smell of the gas. “After my family members complained to me about the smell, I checked the nob (top portion of the cylinder) but it was found to be ok, but the smell was still getting stronger. I checked for leakage with the water bubble trick and found a crack and a hole in the cylinder from where gas was leaking. Without waiting I called up the emergency number given on the gas registration book and was shocked to
know that they could help only in the morning and were not bothered about the risk the whole area had been put to because of the leaking cylinder.” As the information was received by ADC, the reporter rang up the emergency number, Poonamchand Singh, Vasai Bazar Gas Service Agency, and asked for help, he said “We do not deal with leakages during night. Keep the cylinder in the balcony or near the window; we can only
the funding of the mandal, it manages to get over all controversies and allegations. change the cylinder in the morning!” When the ADC asked about the risk the family and neighbors has been taking, Singh replied “We cannot help it and we can only fix it in the morning, till then manage somehow!” In Nov 2012, four persons died and 17 sustained injuries when an LPG cylinder exploded in a godown at Vardhaman Steel, located in Ekvira building in Virar (W). The ADC spoke to Assistant Fire Station Officer, Fire Brigade headquarters, Ingole, who said, “If it is an emergency number, than it should be working 24 hours and the people providing this service should be specially trained for fire fighting. If the issue was not resolved the customers should not wait for much time and call up the fire stations.”

Soil comparison test on clothes of four accused clothes provides breakthrough for Mumbai police investigating journalist gang rape case after tests confirm first accused’s involvement in the crime

wo weeks after the Mumbai gang rape of a photojournalist at the Shakti Mills Compound in Mahalaxmi, the investigations against the accused got tightened after the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina confirmed that the bloodstains on the clothes of the victim matched with the minor accused’s blood and the soil comparison report confirm that the mud-stains on the clothes of the accused and victim matched with the crime spot. The Kalina Science Forensic Laboratory has submitted its report to the Mumbai police in the gang rape case regarding to first arrested accused who is a minor, confirming that the minor was present on the spot and he committed the crime. On Wednesday, the FSL had received clothes of the four remaining accused for soil comparison testing and DNA test too. According to FSL Director MK Malve, “We have submitted the soil comparison report to the Mumbai Police and now we have the clothes of the four remaining accused. We will submit their reports on Monday on a priority basis. After the incident, we first got the first accused clothes, he is a minor and as blood test findings reveal that it the victim’s blood was on his clothes. ith the arrest of second shooter on Thursday, Mumbai’s crime branch is very close to detecting the firing case involving Ajay Gosalia, who was shot at a week ago but survived. Sleuths from the crime branch arrested a person named Ronit Prabhudayal Vishwakarma alias Ronu, who had accompanied the arrested shooter, Harish Chandra Yadav alias Rajan Yadav, and another shooter yet wanted. Ronit was brought from the area near the MP-UP border. The investigators are now desperately looking for a person named Amit Sinha, who, police believe is the key link between the shooters and the Chhota Rajan gang members lodged in city’s jail, who arranged for shooters to eliminate Ganda. During investigations, police learnt that Sinha is the
Ajay Gosalia person, who not only managed to pass on the message to the incarcerated gangsters of Rajan faction to arrange for the shooting on Ganda, but also provided weapons to the shooters, informed a highly placed crime branch officer. According to the source, Sinha was in touch with Satish Tangappan alias Kalya by meeting him during his
court hearings. In 2011, Kalya was arrested for killing journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. Sinha is a resident of Mira Road-Nalasopara area, and is known for working with the Rajan gang. If sources are to be believed, Sinha is the son of a police constable who was attached to the UP police. Apart from the two shooters, police also arrested two more accused, Kaushik Rajbhor and his driver Abhay Shinde. Both the accused helped the gunmen identify Ganda before the shooting, said the police. Meanwhile, considering the involvement of the underworld, the police are going to apply MCOCA against the accused. Little more than a week ago, three shooters had made an attempt on bookie-cum-land grabber Ajay Gosalia alias Ajay Borivli aka Ajay Ganda. neel.shah@gmail.com

sexual harassment by Bodadiya. Unable to bear the ordeal, Sonali took the extreme step, the complainant alleged. Following investigations, the police arrested Raju and his wife Poornima, alias Rani (27), for abetting suicide. “It appears that the victim had been complaining about Raju’s vulgar acts to his wife, but instead of intervening and reprimanding her husband, Rani instead blamed the victim,” said investigating officer, API Y.K. Chaure. A case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused who have been remanded to police custody till September 7. Further investigations are on.
daughter was one and a half months pregnant. The mother was shocked to learn this and brought the girl to the police station. We then summoned an interpreter expert in sign language and extracted information on the boy. He was arrested on Wednesday. The girl is currently hospitalized,” said senior PI B. Rane of Govandi police station. Gadse was charged with rape and remanded to police custody till September 10. As per law, intercourse with a minor female, even though consensual, amounts to rape, which led to Gadse being arrested for the crime. Roshan Gadse lured the girl by offering her vada pav at his residence.

NCP blames police dept for failure in arresting Dabholkar killers It has been a fortnight since the murder of anti-superstition activist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, but there still has been no breakthrough in the investigations By A Special Correspondent vestigation”.
T
he NCP yesterday trained its guns on the Police Department for its total failure in arresting the killers of rationalist Dr. Naredra Dabholkar. While criticising the department, the party has indirectly blasted the Home Department held by its own Minister. Speaking to reporters, NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “It’s most unfortunate that the killers of Dr. Dabholkar are still at large. This is a clear failure of the police to nab the culprits. I think special attention should be given to this in-
NCP is a constituent in the Democratic Front (DF) government in the state and the Home Ministry is with the NCP, headed by R.R. Patil. It may be recalled that Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has also expressed his displeasure over the investigation by the Pune Police in the case. It has been a fortnight since the murder of anti-superstition activist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, but there still has been no breakthrough in the investigations. Pune Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol has openly admitted that they don’t have any positive leads. This, even after the crime
branch teams have questioned over 900 anti-social elements and criminals across the state. The cops also conducted searches at over 90 places, probed the possible involvement of anti-Dabholkar right-wing groups like Sanatan Sanstha. Surprisingly, the 150 hours of CCTV footage gathered from different sources from near the murder spot and other areas has also not been of much help. With no leads, the pressure on the police as well as the government is mounting every single day. As a result the ruling NCP came down heavily on the police.

Why are parties against coming under RTI ambit? I
F political parties are not corrupt, if they have nothing to hide, there is no reason why they should not be in the ambit of the RTI Act. All political parties, except the CPI, are of the view that the act should not apply to them. The issue came up before Parliament yesterday and the amended bill was sent to the Parliamentary Committee. The amendment to the bill providing for keeping out political parties out, is likely to be sent back with the full approval of the Parliamentary Committee. All major political parties, it is clear, have something to hide: No party wants to reveal how much funds they have and how they collect the same. Who are the people from whom they collect donations and how do the parties return the favour done to them? It is a well-known fact that parties collect funds from dubious sources. It is possible that they collect money by resorting to corrupt practices. For instance, in the Rs.1,80,000-crore coal scam, there should have been huge quid pro quo. The parties which had been favoured must have got big kickbacks. No wonder political parties do not want to respond to RTI queries. Very often, at present, they explain away the huge expenditure they incur, by claiming that the funds they have came from small donations from lakhs of their workers. Former BSP chief Mayawati used to give such explanations. The parties will find RTI inquiry highly embarrassing and inconvenient and not in their interests.

N editorial in The New Indian Express (August 21) condemning Meenakshi Natarajan’s Private Member’s Bill for regulating the media and Information Minister Manish Tewari’s suggestion for holding examinations for journalists before they join the profession calls for comment. One hopes Tewari isn’t suggesting that politicians should also be examined by a Board of Psychiatrists before they are inducted into a cabinet. That would make great sense and save the UPA a good deal of embarrassment. The Express sadly hasn’t published the details of Meenakshi Natarajan’s Bill, nor, to the best of my knowledge has any other paper, and so, at this point, I’ll let it go. But what sort of examination does Tewari have in mind in the appointment of journalists on newspaper staffs? Applicants, needless to say, are invariably interviewed, which is a normal thing to do. Tewari, it seems, has something else in mind when he says that journalists have to pass a test to secure “a license”. Secure a license? Now what is that?
paper? Does he know to report an event, any event, accurately and impartially? As a spokesman for the UPA Government he has only brought shame and disrepute to the profession, Ask me, I have covered international news in four continents and won awards. As The Indian Express noted, “the seemingly uninformed Minister should realise that it has been a venerable convention in India to leave the media alone (except 1975-77) and to enable it to overcome its deficiencies through self-regulation”. And may one make a short statement? The way Mr. Tewari and his fellow party spokesman Digvijay Singh have functioned in
Journalists were hired in good faith
MEDIAWATCH
Decades ago, there were no journalism schools and candidates for jobs were hired in good faith, if they had a minimum degree and showed a sense of commitment. I am professionally speaking, a pharmaceutical chemist who gave up a top job in the industry to seek a place in the media. I knew neither shorthand nor typing, two qualifications then for a reporter. This is not the place for my recounting such professional success as I might have achieved, but I might tell Tewari it has not been bad. Indeed he even might envy me. The point I make is that if I could turn out to be a success why can’t someone else? In any event it is none of the government’s business to tell the media bosses who they should appoint and certainly it is not for the government to give ‘licenses’ – whatever that means. Which government in the past would have dared to question the credibility of the likes of M. Chelapathi Rao, Khasa Subha Rao, Frank Moraes or Sham Lal? Is Tewari joking? And what credibility, pray, does he have to be an Information Minister? Does he have a degree in journalism? Has he covered any important domestic or international meeting for a leading
M.V. Kamath the past, using foul and intemperate language against Opposition leaders makes one hang one’s head in shame. Neither is qualified to be a party spokesman, let alone hold an Information Minister’s rank. The media, God knows, has its faults. But it constantly seeks to mend them. Ask me again, Mr. Tewari. I have been in the profession for the last 68 years. Thus The Economic Times (August 19) for example, warned the media to handle the Sensex fall with a better sense of responsibility. The Sensex has been steadily losing steam. The paper did its utmost to analyse the market in all its variations. Why did it do so, it asked, and itself gave the answer. It said: “We weighed facts, we crunched numbers…. We reported what we judged was the truth. But what we didn’t do, what we never do, is create panic for the sake of big headlines….” The paper quietly defined the media’s duty. As it said: “A bear market, truth be told, is not good for the business aspects of running a big financial newspaper. But our journalistic duty is to find out
t first glance, this story of Shiva chopping of his son’s head and replacing it with that of an elephant, just seems like a nice tale that we might tell our children, or a myth without any real substance. But, it’s true mystical meaning is veiled: Parvati is a form of Devi, the Parashakti (Supreme Energy). In the human body, she resides in the Muladhara chakra as the Kundalini shakti. It is said that when we purify ourselves, ridding ourselves of the impurities that bind us, then the Lord automatically comes. This is why Shiva, the Supreme Lord, came unannounced as Parvati was bathing. Tp prevent future such incursions, Parvati took the turmeric paste from Her own body, and with it created Ganesha. Yellow is the color associated with the Muladhara chakra, where the kundalini resides, and Ganesha is the deity who guards this chakra. Devi
Govt likes to hide truth from public On the same day (August 18) The Hindu carried a story that said: “The government has dismissed claims by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from Arunachal Pradesh that Chinese People’s Liberation Army troops had intruded deep into their state.” Apparently it all started with an e-mail by the former BJP parliamentarian from Arunachal Pradesh, Kiran Rejiiju, who claimed that Chinese troops had ‘intruded deep inside Indian territory’ in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, This, said The Hindu’s correspondent Sandeep Dikshit, was followed up by a tweet from his party colleague and BJP national general secretary Tapir Gao, who also made the same claim”. Mr. Gao went further, claiming that the Chinese Army intrusion in Anjaw district was upto 65 kms into Indian territory. According to The Hindu, the External Affairs Ministry dismissed BJP claims, saying “we don’t take up nonevents in diplomatic practice”, and adding: “There has been a rebuttal by the army on this and we don’t want to go beyond that”. What one would like to know is from where did DH News Service get its news? From the BJP men? To what extent are the BJP politicians reliable? Were they concocting news? But if they were telling the truth, how can we take the External Affairs Ministry’s reaction in good faith? Who is fooling whom? After Defence Miniser A.K. Antony’s behaviour in Parliament where he had to eat crow on an earlier statement he had made, how can one ever take the government’s denial of the Arunachal Pradesh leaders’ report seriously? The saddest part of it all, every now and then the UPA government seems to be anxious to hide truth from the public. Mr. Tewari may not be aware of it, but the UPA government has lost its credibility. Its time for it to go – and along with it, the Manish Tewaris and Digvijay Singhs. We want a new government.

Abandonment is the flip side of glory for Vanzara GUJARAT IPS officer Vanzara accused in fake encounter cases blames Narendra Modi before calling quits. He tried for an escape route and made his mind very clear in the end by firing the final salvo on the Gujarat Chief Minister and his aide. D.G. Vanzara was a high flyer. His career was on the fast track. He believed that he had the trust of Chief Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. But ultimately he got caught in the political football between Modi, the rising star of the BJP, and Modi’s political opponents. Abandonment is the flip side of glory, for encounter spe-
Sachin is best left alone 200 is just a number and the media hype on Sachin retiring after playing this historic match is unwarranted. A player after completing such a milestone in cricket history sure is more capable than the rest to take a call on his retirement and one should let the Master take a call on to hang up his boots rather than creating an unnecessary controversy. Cricket runs in Tendulkar’s blood and he still has a hunger for runs and tons. Every Indian should feel proud of his achievement and we should rather enjoy Tendulkar play as cricket would never ever witness a cricketer like him once he hangs up his boots. Also, Sachin Tendulkar too would not drag his career and spoil his name and reputation if he feels he has slowed down and finding it difficult to score runs on the field. It is absurd to advise the Little Master to retire.

US threat to Syria THE edit piece ‘Chemical weapons: A lame excuse for Syria strike?’ (ADC, Sep 4), reveals that one more hugely erroneous move by the US is likely to occur as the US president Barack Obama has stated in his speech to the US that even if no other nation intervenes, the US will go it alone to the Syrian rulers to stop the attack by chemical weaponry by striking Syria for which his battleships and other armoury have reached the Mediterranian. This would be indeed another blunder if the US attacks Syria, as this would mean more loss of life. As such, the attack which took place has caused the exodus of estimated three million people into the neighbouring countries like Turkey, Lebanon and even to distant Iraq. — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

PLEASE refer to your news item regarding the grim situation pertaining to Syria. Western countries should proceed with caution, regarding any direct armed action e.g. aerial bombings, in Syria. Past experiences in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that such direct action has rarely yielded the desired results. Armed interventions have led to situations getting exacerbated. I strongly urge that the Western powers heed the advice of Vladamir Putin, President of Russia, who has been advocating a political solution
UNION Government and the Finance Ministry tried all the tricks up their sleeves to stop the sensational fall of Sensex and the fall of the Indian Rupee against dollar. BSE index falls by 651 points and the investors are having butterflies in their stomach. Nearly 170 stocks touched a new low in the last one year and hence it was called a sensational fall. Thus nearly 1.62 lakh crore worth of investor’s wealth was eroded in one stroke. Rupee falling at the intra day low of 68.27, closed at 67.63 after a fall of 163 pts or 2.47 per cent at a time. More bad news coming from the credit rating agency and other financial observers of the world. Goldman Sachs cut India’s growth forecast for 2013-14 to 4 per cent from 6 per cent. Unholy act of Asaram Bapu I FULLY endorse the contents of the notice sent to the Jodhpur Police Commissioner by lawyer and social activist Abha Singh (ADC, Aug2) for wrongfully implementing Section 160 of the Criminal Procedure 1973 by sending summons to Asaram Bapu for his arrest instead of implementing Section 73 of the Criminal Procedure 1973 to issue arrest warrant to arrest him immediately for the alleged rape of the 15-year-old minor girl in his ashram. The delay of 12 days gave enough time to the self styled and self proclaimed Godman to carry on with his activities. I will only articulate that the law in our country is weak and that’s
THE recent development in respect of Gujarat IPS officer D.G. Vanzara, the Narendra Modi government’s ‘go to’ man when it came to encounter killings in the state, has shaken up the national politics spectrum. Vanzara has been in jail on charge of illegal killing of suspects. He tendered his resignation from the service recently in his long 10-page letter to the authorities in which he brought stinging charges against Modi’s minister of state for home Amit Shah and as good as said that the alleged fake encounters were precisely the reason why such fake babas emerge and commit such crime and get away with bail for the heinous crime committed by them. The law therefore in our country needs a drastic amendment. — K.V. Raman, Malad
Cong-BJP acrimony AS the D-Day for the next Lok Sabha polls approaches, the sparring match between the Congress and the BJP is getting increasingly acrimonious. The more the Saffron Party drags the UPA II over the coal fire, the Raj Bhavan at Gandhinagar becomes more active. In order to leave no stone unturned, the Congress is garnering fresh weaponry in the form of some old and broken CDs and paper missiles from the armoury of an IPS officer. The ultimate winner of this war would be decided in the battle of the ballot that may take place in April/May 2014, if not advanced by that time. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz

Interesting ‘chor’ episode THE ‘chor’ word has again made news but media seems to have conveniently forgotten a more amusing ‘chor’ episode. Way back in the late 1980s when he was riding the wave (but Bofors was already nipping his heels) there was a birthday celebration on All India Radio, Patna. After all the usual happy birthday songs and other paeans, the programme director asked the children for some extempore statements. Rajan is man of the hour THIS refers to the report ‘Capable Rajan takes over as RBI Governor’ (ADC, Sep 5). It is not often that the appointment of a highranking officer evokes such an expectation in the country as it has done in the case of the new RBI Governor, Dr. Raghuram Rajan whose resume comprises numerous distinctions. The top bankers have all quite rightly exuded confidence that he has the intellectual prowess to wade through the present difficulties facing the economy. “Y
ou know what I like most about people? Pets.” As we quote this witty but oh-sotrue line by author Jarod Kintz, we don’t think that we need to point out the importance of pets in our lives. Of the many pet parents that we have spoken to, most of them have told us that they feel like coming back home only to hug and cuddle their pets. From the honest delight on their birthdays to the silent tears at their interment, pets are so much more than the term coined for them. Serving as an ode to our beloved buddies, this article will tell you all how you can have fun with your pet in this city.
Pet friendly restaurants With eating out being a regular feature of our lifestyle, some of us wonder why our pets can’t accompany us on these regular outings. While the city’s infrastructure is not pet friendly, Mumbai’s many services are becoming conducive to our pets and that includes a few restaurants in the city as well. There are just a handful of them, but it’s a start nonetheless! We tell you about restaurants where your pooch will feel as welcome as you.
Gostana: Gostana was one of the first restaurants in the city that was as glad to see your pets as you. This snug little café with home-like interiors and a floor seating arrangement, is the perfect place to have a meal along with your pet. The kitchen offers healthy burgers and salads for you and nutritious meals for your four-legged companion as well. All you have to do is inform them in advance so that they can keep a meal ready for your pet. And while you are at Gostana, don’t miss out on meeting Arpana Gvalani’s (owner) friendly Labrador called Apple. Where Ground Floor, Prabhat Kunj, 24th Road, Bandra (W) Contact 64533359 the Bagel shop: Another pet friendly eatery in Bandra, The Bagel Shop invites pets in their outdoor section. This section is well-covered, expansive and according to us, more pleasant than their indoor area. While they don’t offer treats for your pet, you at least will not have to hop in for a quick lunch and keep looking at your watch because you have left your pet alone at home. You can munch on their bagels, sandwiches and smoothies while your pet dozes off. Where 30, Pali Mala Road, Off Carter Road, Bandra (W) Contact 30932030
alibaba: While Alibaba in South Mumbai doesn’t allow your pet to be seated with you near your table, you can bring them along and get them settled in the outdoor section of the restaurant. You can also place an order here for your pet. When you are feasting on their Indian, Thai and Chinese dishes, you can rest assured that your pet is enjoying some special treats outside. « EXHIBITION: ART MUSINGS’ GALLERY SHOW
>> The artwork at Art Musings’ new show may be inspired by the Looney Toons but most of Raghava KK’s work is a mix of metaphors created by using popular images from cartoons and characters to even historical figures and memes
« GIG: CONCERT AT NCPA sTop-Gaps Choral ensemBle As the world celebrates the 200th birth anniversaries of the two great opera composers, Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner, the Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its existence by performing the most popular choruses from their operas, which include Nabucco, Il Travatore, Aida, La Traviata, Macbeth,Tannhauser,The Flying Dutchman, Lohengri and La Forza Del Destino. Besides this, operatic arias and duets will be performed by some of India’s seasoned as well as upcoming opera singers such as Aude Priya Engel (Soprano), Zarin Ghadialy Hodiwala (Contralto), Toshanbor Singh Nongbet (Tenor), Bhanu Sharma (Baritone) and Farah Ghadiali (Soprano), accompanied by the flamboyant young pianist, Nise Meruno. In true Stop-Gaps style, the concert will be performed with resplendent costumes and sets that bring this hauntingly dramatic music to life. Chairman and music director of the Stop-Gaps Cultural Academy, Alfred J. D’Souza, says, “I am extremely proud of The Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble as we celebrate 30 years of uninterrupted singing this year. The choir, though amateur in nature, is as good as any professional one in the world, being able to tackle all genres of music and sing in different languages. It comprises of Indian singers with the determination and drive to hone their musical skills, despite other personal and professional commitments, and have done the nation proud by winning accolades, awards and admiration both from press and public alike at home and abroad.” This show is a must-visit for any music enthusiast. MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2013
ThaT’s all Folks! The title may remind you of Warner Bros. and The Looney Tunes, but That’s All Folks is so much more. The solo exhibition features multi-disciplinary artist and renowned TED speaker, Raghava KK who was named the National Geographic Emerging Explorer, because he uses art as a tool of exploration. The new exhibition with a solo show by the Bangalore artist has work that grapples with the construction of identity, gender and sexuality within the structures of power, knowledge and empathy. Raghava tells us, “My visual metaphors come about through the emotional mapping of the three disparate worlds — the cartoon, the historical and the memetic. By this, I mean that I will not map literal characters or events, but an emotional response to them. My intention in bringing these worlds together is to exaggerate the flatness of Indian school history, using the further flattening medium of caricature and the indoctrinatory nature of memes.” He also tells us that there is a basis for commonality among Indians that’s separate from any other nationality. In his eyes, India is more of a meme than a nation formed on commonality. Head over to see his work, which he says is his historical document of where linearity of time is distorted and rearranged like a knot, creating parallel and orthogonal universes. « INTERVIEW: LILI MENON
Art for a cause Lili Menon’s art exhibition donates its proceeds to P.R.I.D.E. India to provide academic support to poor children. Rhea Dhanbhoora talks to her about art being her medium for social change
Why did you make the switch from advertising to art? I studied applied art at Sophia Polytechnic with a specialisation in graphic design, so I was naturally taken to advertising. After relocating to India, I took to canvas to paint as an experiment. After discovering acrylics I knew I had made a connection. I went through a metamorphosis of style to create visual representations through the medium of acrylics and mixed media.
You have a passion for social causes. Tell us about a few of the ones you’ve been involved in? I have always been sensitive to social causes and my involvement was spurred by rampant deforestation. I have raised funds for Satpuda Foundation's research center (working in wildlife and forest preservation) and I am currently working to raise funds for P.R.I.D.E. India, helping marginalised rural communities get access to health services, sustenance and education. What made you pick art as your medium for change? My way of being proactive was using what I knew best — graphics, paint and canvas. My work is to be shared, it should belong to someone and one should be able to connect with it. I hope I am able to share my passion for social causes by being proactive, not passive aggressive. Tell us more about your current exhibition? SOULSTORIES is a series of artwork in mix media on canvas. The concept was born out of a recurring thought; what would happen if we paused and listened to our souls? The titles link the visual and the story; for example, the title Legacy implies what we leave behind, such as fossils, footprints, imprints. It questions whether we think of our actions as imprints or only as a display of our capabilities. * SOULSTORIES is on display up to September 8 at Artist Centre, 1st floor, Ador House, K Dubash Marg, Kala Ghoda

These pieces have travelled and been worn by women from all over the world and have their own story to tell. Co-owners of Viange, Mehek and Shikha Agarwal, say, “Each piece is beautifully crafted and designed, keeping in mind a woman’s love to look beautiful and be appreciated. « STORE REVIEW: JADE INNANA & YOGACARA
>> Jade has an array of classic and contemporary outfits in a variety of colours
Madhurjya Saikia | HRM
CALLING CINDERELLA J Jade by Monica & Karishma at Kemps Corner boasts of a new evening wear collection called Innana. Tejasvi Desai ventures in to see just how ‘designer’ the outfits are
ade is the kind of store you’ll stare at from the outside, but seldom have reason to enter, unless of course, a big fat wedding is around the corner. But, the boutique at Kemps Corner gave us an excuse to step inside with the launch of their new line of evening wear. The cosy layout of the boutique has a vintage feel to it, with the collection tastefully lined up against the wooden furnishings. The Innana collection is a beautiful blend of vintage and modern. The colour palette is classic, whereas the designs are chic and contemporary. You will not find any loud neon or bright reds here. The designers have chosen to play around with a wide range of pastels including peach, turquoise and pink in varying intensities, offset perfectly by the choicest of stones to give the outfits a regal touch. The boutique has a good selection of cocktail dresses, saris and gowns on display, but not enough for you to be spoilt for choice. Jade specialises in customisation and can design an outfit for you from scratch or even make changes to already existing

Yogacara is a new wellness centre that promises authentic Ayurvedic treatments and Iyenger yoga to keep you healthy. Dev Goswami visits their outlet in Bandra and tells you why you should too
W
hen I first heard about Yogacara, I thought it was just another yoga centre. But, while ‘yoga’ finds a mention in the name and menu, Yogacara is not limited to just yoga workouts. Yogacara is a wellness centre that aims to utilise traditional Indian medicine and treatments to improve mental and physical health. To discover what sets it apart, you need to chat with owner Radhika Vacchani. She says that their idea is to offer original, authentic Ayurvedic treatments. And when they say authentic, they don’t just mean the procedure. Radhika gives us an example of how metal healing, spoken about in Ayurveda, is not offered at Yogacara because they cannot be sure of the purity of metals in the market. So, what does Yogacara offer? They have treatments and therapies for weight loss, age reversal, stress management, detoxification, and health & disease management. They also have massages and yoga classes. However, at Yogacara, you can’t walk in and
choose a treatment. First, an Ayurvedic doctor analyses your health and tells you what you might be suffering from. Post the analysis, a personalised treatment plan is designed, which aims to cure and/or prevent specific problems that you might be afflicted with. What we liked most was their dedication towards yoga and ayurveda. They will not recommend treatments you don’t need; in fact, Radhika told us about how they have turned away clients because they did not need therapy. Apart from wellness, Yogacara offers classes in Hatha yoga, with an emphasis on the Iyengar school. They also has a terrace garden at the end of the studio. Yogacara have developed a unique concept and their sincerity and honesty is easy to spot. Book your appointment now!

designs on display. We started browsing through the collection of beautiful gowns and they sat so perfectly on the hangers, that it almost felt that wearing them would mar the beauty of the outfit. If you ever want to pull a Cinderella, head over to this store and you will not be disappointed. One such gown that swept us off our feet was a Blush Gown (`1.08 lakh) made of organza fabric. It was immaculate in beige with an intricate silver design till the bust. A grey sequined strappy gown (`82,450) was also breathtaking with opals adorning the bust, which tapered into a light scatter as the pattern merged into the bottom. The can-can material used at the hem gave the gown a perfect flow. But, that’s the thing, the designs are too elegant with all the sequin work to be worn to just another dinner party. If you have an occasion fancy enough in mind, then you’re in for a treat. Their collection of cocktail dresses was nothing extraordinary compared to their price tags, although the finishing was perfect. If you want to really indulge, some of them would make for nice brunch outfits. They range from `20,000 and go up to `40,000. The saris on the other hand, had a lot of variety and each piece was unique in its own way. Right from the colours and fabrics to the stones, everything about them was divine. Our favourite among the lot was a pre-pleated, beige sari made with French chiffon (`58,800), with a beautiful broach studded with golden stones on the shoulder. The price range for saris starts at `22,000 and it can go above one lakh. All in all, the designs and prices both make Jade a boutique in the true sense. If you ever decide to go gown shopping, this should be your first and hopefully last stop.

nassuming in Sun-n-Sand, Country of Origin doesn’t look fancy from the outside. It’s small, with glass doors, standard pastry counters and an interesting wooden bench flanked by an ornate mirror. Unlike its bigger store in South Mumbai, this little outlet serves as a one-stop-shop for most of the hotel’s gourmet food loving clientele. Several walk-ins browse around, picking up a pastry or two — sometimes even an entire pack of the Basilur tea they stock. Honey and jams are available but the spices and flavours are missing, which you hardly notice because of the emphasis on their sweet treats. From pillar to post, Country of Origin is stocked with goodies that look even more tempting thanks to the packaging. The Red Velvet cookies (`180) are an interesting spin on the city’s latest go-to
ALL GOOD If you’re up for a little indulgence, Glynda Alves recommends you visit newly opened Two One Two All Day in Santacruz
S
ometimes, it pays to have good with the right woody notes and an neighbours. And for Mumbai’s indulgent creamy consistency. The newest eatery, Two One Two All corn soup was good too, with a slight Day, it seems to have worked tang that complemented the sweet out really well. Beyond the glass façade corn well. Our tummies nicely warmed up, we is the classy Mini Cooper showroom, which is perhaps the highlight of this placed an order for the Balsamico otherwise typically styled deli. While marinated rocket leaves salad (`390), the overall ambience is welcoming Tenderloin Carpaccio (`475), Truffle and airy (we love the ample space Fries (`575) and Crab Farci (`575). The between tables), the sheer loveliness salad with its sharp rocket leaves, of gazing into the adjacent showroom poached pear and oh-my-gosh-thiswill have patrons scrambling for a seat must-be-love goat’s cheese croutons by the tall glass windows. If you can was a salad extraordinaire! The manage to tear your eyes away from Carpaccio was beautifully presented the cars, you’ll notice a few quirky and as pleasing to the palate. The fries items dotting the predominantly did seem a little pricey, but the portion is large and though it would be very wooden and beige deli. Coming to the food, the menu is heavy for just two people, it’s a good vast, with typically European fare and appetiser for a larger group. The crab a few Mediterranean touches thrown was also well-presented, with a subtle in. My dinner companion and I started flavour. With the way things were our meal with the Wild Mushroom going, we couldn’t help but order a few Cappuccino and the Oven Roasted more appetisers. So, we ordered the American Corn Soup (both `325). BBQ Spiced Chicken Wings (`475) and Both soups were served at the perfect the Mushroom Ragout (`250). Such a temperature, which is important in good decision! The blue cheese cut my books because burning my tongue through the sweetness of the wings pretty much ruins the rest of my meal. very well and the baked puff pastry The mushroom soup was delicious, dish is a must-have.
Our main course consisted of Truffle Pasta (`2,300) and the Chilean Sea Bass (`2,300). While you might think the prices are steep, the dishes are value for money and such a good treat. The pasta was warm, creamy and the truffle delicately flavoured the sauce. The bass, on a bed of prawn risotto, was served with fresh vegetables and had a lovely summery flavouring — fresh and bursting with flavour. Dessert comprised of an Opera Cake and the Raspberry Cheesecake. The former was good but really, it didn’t have much of a chance next to the best slice of cheesecake I’ve eaten. Not too sweet with an explosion of tart raspberry, this easily makes it to my list of foods where calories do not matter. The great thing about the food here is the balance. Every dish we sampled was a perfect meeting of flavours. Executive chef Mikhail Shahani deserves a thumbs up for that. Don’t think it can get any better? Well, come December Two One Two All Day will have and al fresco area with a wood fire pizza oven. If the pizzas are anything like the food we had here, we can’t wait!

>> Try the Hazelnut pastry (inset) at Country of Origin (top) flavour, but a bit pricey for just two. The Chocolate Fondant (`200) was a bit floury, but the molten centre and burst of coffee made sure that was forgotten. If you’re looking to invest in your sweet tooth, pick up a jar of their Red Velvet (`875). A family of four can comfortably share it, though you will be fighting over the frosting. The Hot Chocolate Spoons (`80), hot chocolate squares solidified onto plastic spoons, sold with signature paper cups, make for a guilty midnight snack. The Chocolate Syringes (`210), which are essentially chocolate shots packaged in plastic syringes, are nice, but not spectacular. Their cinnamon and vanilla waffles (`40) are a good buy. The new additions didn’t disappoint and what took the cake was that you don’t have to be willing to spend a pretty penny to get a taste of their delightful service and quaint packaging. And, ending on an even sweeter note, Bandra residents will be happy to know that a new branch has opened up opposite Salt Water Café.

GUESS WHO’S BACK? Actor Shilpa Shirodkar, who bid adieu to stardom and walked to the altar with UK-based merchant banker in 2000, now returns to her first love — acting, with Ek Mutthi Aasmaan where she plays the lead protagonist Kamala Bai. In an exclusive conversation with Rohit Pramar she talks about her character, show and much more
MUMBAI MUMBAI| |FRIDAY, FRIDAY,SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER03, 6, 2010 2013
What kept you away from acting all this time? I got married in 2000 and then I moved abroad. I was travelling a lot. And then I had my daughter who now is nine-years-old. So, all this kept me busy and I didn’t realise how time passed. Also, since I was based abroad, I didn’t have many opportunities. What did you miss the most? Since I am a very content person, I didn’t miss anything much. I’ve always been busy and happy with whatever I have. Why now? What made you choose this show? Honestly speaking, it was never a conscious effort to make a comeback. I have been back in India for three years now but, when my manager called me to talk about the show, he insisted that I read the script. I read it and loved it. The concept of the show is very different. The show is based on the life of domestic help and the turbulence their children and family go through. Tell us about your role. I’m playing the role of Kamala who is a domestic worker. It’s a very important role. She is a very practical woman. However, she doesn’t want her children to be like her. She wants them to learn and find a better occupation. Neither is she embarrassed to admit the fact that she works as a domestic worker. She is very hard-working. What are the shows that you like to watch? In the 90s I used to love Banegi Apni Baat. I even followed that show when I was abroad. Then there was this one show called Kumkum. I used to like it. Currently, I love Dance India Dance. My daughter and I love to watch it together.

She is a very sweet girl. She is also very mature. What I really like about her is that she’s always ready to learn and listen. Filmmakers you’d like to work with... Times have changed and so has the way of filmmaking. I guess from Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap to Anurag Basu, they all make nice films. NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (September 6, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello
REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY The Nifty rose substantially on Thursday (September 05, 2013) a net 144.85 points (2.66%) and closed at the 5592 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 5553 points level. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s low at the 5625 points level at 9.21 a.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 2.05 p.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 5552 points level at 2.20 p.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained above its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 71 points and closed just below the psychologically important 5600 points level. Sentiment was bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 33 were gainers, 16 were losers and 1 remained unchanged. Substantial buying was seen realty, consumer durables, PSU and capital goods stocks, while selling was seen in IT, technology and healthcare stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 29.12%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 936 were gainers, 407 were losers and 56 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has risen above the slow D line (positive and a buy signal).
RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line but both lines are converging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5240 points level. The next support is at the 5191 points level.
Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 5604 points level. The next resistance is at the 5695 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5590 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5556; Support (2) = 5519 Resistance (1) = 5627 Resistance (2) = 5661.
OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive white body candle on substantially higher volumes. The body of this candle is above and outside the body of the previous candle indicating a range expansion and acceleration. This is positive. Further, the index has crossed above the 25 days moving average. The index is now above the 5, 15 and 25 days moving averages. Moreover, the velocity parameters, which were neutrally trended, have now turned positive. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major resistance level at the 5604 points level. (The index tested that level intra-day, yesterday) There is a possibility that it could find some resistance there. However, if it crosses above it then a further rise can be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
MOVING AVERAGES (TREND INDICATORS) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 5481) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 5424) Positive. Has crossed above its 25-day average (at 5515) Positive. Is below its 200-day average (at 5833) Negative.
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market with a positive bias.

Escorts has seen management changes in the past one year. Management had prepared a road map for the company where it had outlined various initiatives which would ultimately lead to improvement in the EBITDA margins of the company 3x from the levels of ~5 percent. Management has also shifted focus towards the higher margin yielding higher HP segment which now contributes more than 50 percent of sales. The change in product mix, determination to target higher levels of profitability by focusing on cost discipline (manpower and raw material cost) has started yielding results in the form of improvement in the company’s performance from the last 2-3 quarters. We expect Escorts to witness a CAGR growth of 24.6 percent in EBITDA and 51.4 percent in profitability over FY12-FY14E leading to an improvement in its RoE from 4.3 percent in FY12 to 8.9 percent in FY14E and RoCE to improve from 6.1 percent in FY12 to 9.5 percent in FY14E. At CMP, the stock trades at an attractive multiple of 6.7x and 5.8x its FY13E and FY14E EPS of Rs11.9 and Rs13.7 respectively. Assigning a target multiple of 7.5x on FY14E we arrive at a target price of Rs 103 indicating an upside of 28.7 percent from current levels. We recommend to BUY the stock at current levels.
Centrum calls a ‘Buy’ on NMDC CMP: Rs. 122 Target Rs. 145
We see volume traction continuing in NMDC with better logistics in Chhattisgarh and higher demand by customers post sharp price cuts. We now expect sales volumes of 29MT (vs 27.5MT earlier) in FY14E, up ~10% YoY. We continue to maintain our view of an up-move in fines prices in H2FY14 on the back of increase in end product prices (sponge iron, pellets), recent iron ore price increases by Orissa miners and better seasonal demand from buyers. Possible reductions in export duty and railway freight for exports are other potential triggers. We revise our EBITDA estimates upwards by 11.6% each for FY14E/15E and reiterate Buy with an upward revised target price of Rs145. Valuation and risks – maintain Buy: We remain structurally positive on the company on account of low cost operations, strong free cash flow generation and healthy balance sheet. The stock continues to trade at attractive valuations of 3.7x FY15E EV/EBITDA. Strong dividend yield of 7% is an added plus. We value the company at 5x FY15E EV/EBITDA to arrive at a target price of Rs145. Maintain Buy. Risks to our call include lower volumes in H2FY14, lower prices and unfavourable use of the cash pile.
HDFC Securities calls a ‘Buy’ on Suven Life Sciences CMP: Rs. 47 Target Rs. 57
Investment Rationale: Large players in CRAMS space: Suven’s main thrust is in Contract Research and Manufacturing Services (CRAMS). Suven’s CRAMS is in existence since 1991 serving as many as 22 global Life Science and Fine Chemical Companies by developing and supplying cost effective Pharmaceutical and Agro Chemical Intermediates for New Chemical Entities (NCE’s) meeting world standards of Quality, Speed and Respect for Environment. With more than 360 projects completed and 57 projects being undertaken, Suven’s client list includes 22 global life sciences majors. More than 65% revenues in this segment are accrued from US and Europe. The CRAMS business has grown at a CAGR of over 50% over FY10-13 to Rs.227.6 cr. Under CRAMS, Suven works with the innovator company when the underlying molecule is in the clinical trial stages. Conclusion: Suven, a pioneer in Contract Research and Manufacturing Services (CRAMS), has successfully leveraged its R&D expertise and relationships with top MNC pharmaceutical firms by venturing into drug discovery and development support (DDDSS) and collaborative research partner (CRP) services. Suven derives strength primarily from the experienced promoter and management team, established track record under CRAMS with reputed clientele, strong Research & Development (R&D) competency, growing scale of operations with improving profitability margins and satisfactory gearing levels over the period. With its strong business model and operating leverage, the company is likely to be one of the key beneficiaries of an improved global outsourcing environment. According to our estimates, company is likely to clock a revenue growth of 43.5% in FY14E. EBIDTA margins are expected to be at 28.9% level in FY14E with PAT margins at 18.1%. Further, we estimate company to report EPS of Rs.5.7 in FY14E. At CMP of Rs.41.0, the stock is trading at 7.2x FY14E EPS of Rs.5.7. We feel investors could buy the stock at CMP and add on dips to Rs.34 (6x FY14E EPS) for sequential targets of Rs.48.6 (8.5x FY14E EPS) and Rs.57 (10x FY14E EPS) over the next 1-2 quarters.

Moody’s Downgrades Subdebt Ratings Of 11 Indian Banks NEWS FLASH

M
oody’s Investors Service yesterday downgraded subordinated debt ratings of 11 Indian banks, including SBI, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. The subordinated debt and junior subordinated debt ratings of eight public sector banks and three private lenders were lowered following a review that started on June 3, Moody’s said in a statement. The senior obligation ratings of the banks and their stand-alone baseline credit assessments were not affected, it said. The other banks affected are Axis Bank, Bank
of Baroda, Bank of India, Canara Bank, IDBI Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Syndicate Bank and Union Bank of India. The downgrade reflects the increasing international trend of imposing losses on holders of subdebt securities (creditor “bail-in”) as a pre-condition for distressed banks to receive government support, Moody’s said. As a consequence, Moody’s assumes that Indian government support is less likely to be forthcoming for the holders of such securities. “The global financial crisis has demonstrated that support can be provided selectively, with the costs
being shared with subordinated creditors of a bank, without triggering any contagion, as it was previously feared,” Moody’s Vice President Gene Fang said in the statement. Moody’s analysis observes that India has a modern and progressive approach to bank regulation. There is no explicit legal power allowing Indian regulators to selectively impose losses on subdebt holders outside of a liquidation process. However, as a member of the G20 and Financial Stability Board (FSB), India could move towards adopting a bank resolution framework that imposes losses on subordinated debt holders, it said.

Owing to the increase in inventory levels...
Mumbai Developers Will Find It Difficult To Raise Property Prices By Mayura Shanbaug
D
BUSINESS
evelopers in Mumbai will increasingly find it difficult to raise property prices, owing to the increase in inventory levels, subdued demand with no immediate improvement in the near future, and uncertain macro environment, believe experts in the industry. “Declining affordability and high economic uncertainty are the twin reasons, which would cause property prices in Mumbai to remain subdued, in the near and medium term,” ICRA has said in its research report on Mumbai’s real estate market. This, despite the fact, that while affluence levels are highest in Mumbai, only 13% of Mumbai’s tax payers own a house, compared to 40% in Bengaluru and 17% in Hyderabad, indicating to a large latent potential. The capital rates in the city’s real estate market have remained largely firm in the past, supported by limited supply as well increasing cost pressures, ICRA noted. How-
ever, peripheral areas of Thane, Navi Mumbai, would continue to report healthy development as well as traction in the affordable housing segment, given the lower ticket sizes. Although RBI in June 2013, has lowered the risk weightage on loans extended to developers for residential projects to 75% from 100%, which could have provided some breather on interest rate front, the increase in base rate and recent tightening in the liquidity, has nullified the impact to a large extent. Moreover, most of the banks have increased their base rates in the recent past, which in-turn would lead to an increase in acquisition cost for the buyers thereby resulting in slower off-take. ICRA has noted that considering less rigid regulatory environment coupled with their larger risk appetite, NBFCs have benefited, owing to slowdown in the banking sector’s lending to the real estate sector. There has been an average growth of 18% in the real estate loan
book of NBFCs as on FY2012; with as much as 40% to 50% growth rate for certain NBFCs. Structured Deals in addition to plain vanilla funding is another option which NBFCs have been adopting. In contrast, the ratio of Commercial Real Estate (CRE) Loans to the Total Loan Book for the Banking sector, reduced to 2.4% as on March 2013, as compared to 2.9% two years back, after peaking at 3.5% in June 2009. The liquidity position of real estate developers has thus been aggravated by the increasing difficulty in accessing bank funding. ICRA has noted that although Development Control Regulations (DCR) have been revised, and project approvals have started flowing in the system, the approval process itself is yet to gather momentum characteristic of earlier years. Earlier, the real estate market in Mumbai had come to a near standstill in terms of new launches owing to abrupt ceasing of approval process by the regulatory authority, the MCGM.
BUSINESS BRIEFS Morgan Stanley Slashes Sensex Target To 18,200
American brokerage Morgan Stanley yesterday slashed its Sensex target for the next 12 months to 18,200, citing weakening macro fundamentals of the economy. “We cut our Sensex earnings growth estimates from 10.5% to 4.1% for this fiscal and from 19% to 12.7% for the next. The new 12-month forward Sensex target is 18,200. Given the tail risks, we underscore our bear case - a 14% fall in the Sensex with a 35% probability,” Morgan Stanley India head Ridham Desai said in a note.
Government Ignored Warnings On Trade Deficit In 2011-12
Industry body Assocham yesterday said the government ignored warnings thrown up by worsening economic indicators, particularly trade deficit, which rose by a staggering 49% during 2011-12, leading to the present crisis of unsustainable current account deficit. “The trade deficit between 2010-11 and 2011-12 increased by as much as 49%, still there was no sign of concern visible either in the Commerce Ministry or in the Finance Ministry at that point of time,” Assocham said in a study.
Expect Rajan To Cut Rates, Boost Growth And Spur Investments
Lauding the pro-reforms approach adopted by RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, industry body CII yesterday expressed the hope that the central bank would shift towards an expansionary monetary policy by cutting interest rates to stimulate growth. “The pro-reforms approach adopted in the speech has sent a strong signal that the RBI would take significant steps to re-invigorate growth in the economy.
Emerging Market Output Edges Higher In Aug; India Posts Sharp Fall
Private sector activity across the emerging market economies edged higher in August, but India posted the steepest rate of decline since March 2009, an HSBC survey said yesterday. According to HSBC, emerging market activity turned positive again in August, after losing traction in every month since April, and experiencing outright contraction in July. The HSBC Emerging Markets Index (EMI), a monthly indicator derived from the PMI surveys, recovered from July’s post-crisis low in August, but signalled only a marginal rise in output across global emerging markets.

What is your definition of a good film? A good film is one which is liked by the audiences and does good business.
What do you have to say about director Apporva Lakhia? He is a much organised director and shoots only what he wants without any wastage of footage. And Ramcharan Teja? He is a superstar down South and has done a

She is ageless and agile — they call her Asha Bhosle – the popdiva of Bollywood. On the eve of melody-queen Asha Bhosle’s 81st birthday, this Sunday, her talented grandson, showbiz pop singer-composer Chintu (Chaitanya) Bhosle conveys his personal birthday sentiments as told to Chaitanya Padukone.
people ask me what it’s like to live with the legendary Asha Bhosle and here’s how best I can sum it up While ‘professionally’ it’s a breeze, as a person she’s a highly tough act to follow - her zest for life, her never-say-die attitude, her always looking to ‘better’ everything she does, her eagerness to embrace new technology (Twitter, Facebook, the internet and yes, even the iPhone) is something that would put most youngsters to shame. “Every time I’m bogged down by life or reach a point where I’m frustrated and wanting to give up, I just have to think about what she would have done. And get my much needed positive energy surge to carry on. “Aai, I raise a toast-glass (of warm water and honey!) to many more years of your rocking this country with your attitude and incredible, phenomenal vocal music!”

good job in the film. I remember when we were shooting in Hyderabad, a huge crowd gathered and the police had to be called to cordon off the area. Not only that, when we were shooting in Madh Island, a huge crowd of his Telugu fans gathered to see him. I hope he is accepted by the Hindi audiences and gets more work in Hindi films.
Ace film maker Rakesh Roshan celebrates his 64th birthday on September 6. He has given the audiences blockbusters like ‘Karan Arjun’, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, etc.. Suneel V. Gaur and Rajesh V. Gaur interviewed the director recently.

Priyanka Chopra is essaying the role made popular by Jaya Bhaduri in Prakash Mehra’s iconic ‘Zanjeer’ which made her husband Amitabh Bachchan a super star. ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to Priyanka about the remake of the film. Here is what she had to say.

You are known to have a ‘K’ fixation as all your films begin with the letter. A fan once wrote to me and said you should name your films with this letter for success. I didn’t believe it and I made ‘Jag Utha Insaan’ and ‘Bhagwan Dada’, which did not do well and then made ‘Khudgarz’ and that was a big success and established me as a director. So that fan wrote to me again and said, “This time you listened to me and you are seeing the results”. That’s how the ‘K’ factor stands and it has definitely proved lucky for me.
Do you feel your films would be incomplete without your son Hrithik? Yes for sure, because he is a complete actor. If you give him any kind of role, he will rise to the challenge and shoulder the responsibility to the T.
Does Hrithik have the capacity to surprise the filmmaker in you? Yes, after I have explained a take to him, I gauge what he’s going to give me but he often surpasses my expectations. That surprises me.

ow that the new Zanjeer is out, just some memories of the old 1973 Prakash Mehra film that is indisputably a mainstream trend-setter...many films that are remade claim the original was a classic, which is always a topic of debate, but this one was. There is movielore attached to the old film— which does not even seem to be 40 years old — even though characters like the Chaku-chhuri wali (played by Jaya Bhaduri) and the Pathan (Pran) are not to be seen in Mumbai any more. Prakash Mehra wanted to cast Raj Kumar in the lead role, but the famously eccentric star is supposed to have turned it down, saying he didn’t like the smell of the director’s hair oil. It’s not as it Mehra was a newbie, he had directed three successful films, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Mela and Samadhi before, but Dharmendra, Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor also refused the film for their own reasons. Pran suggested Amitabh Bachchan, who had had a string of flops behind him. No ac-

the knife-sharpener Mala is expressed through a song by street singers – ‘Deewane hain, deewanon ko...’ The most popular song turned out to be ‘Yaari hai imaan mera’, sung by the gangster Sher Khan (Pran in a fierce henna-haired, kohleyed look), who has a memorable and oft-copied duel with Vijay. The Pathan sneers, even a dog can be a lion in uniform, at which the cop takes off the uniform and proceeds to bash up Sher Khan in front of his henchmen; this encounter results in the reformation of the criminal and a strong friendship between the two brave men. Interestingly, Sanjay Dutt has reprised two iconic villains — Kancha Cheena in Agneepath, which Danny had played in the original and now Sher Khan in the Zanjeer remake. Zanjeer made a superstar out of Amitabh Bachchan, created the Angry Young Man label for him, and started a longlasting trend of violent vendetta films. A film like that can be remade, but it would take some dum to match it.

World number two Nadal, he 2010 champion, took his hardcourt streak this year to 20-0 and his match record to an astonishing 58-3 with nine titles since his return in February after a sevenmonth injury layoff. In a ruthless one hour, 40 minute
demolition of Robredo, who had knocked out five-time champion Federer in the fourth round, the 27year-old French Open champion took his perfect run of unbroken service games to 67 at the tournament yesterday. He romped through the first set in just 22 minutes, allowing Robredo only five points, and was 2-0 up in the second before the 31-year-old got on the board. Another break in the seventh game helped Nadal on his way to a two-set lead and breaks in the fifth and seventh games of the third helped put Robredo out of his misery. It was the shortest US Open quarter-final since 1988, when Ivan Lendl beat Derrick Rostagno. Nadal
finished with 28 winners to Robredo's 10 and didn't give up a single break point as the world number two claimed an eighth win in eight meetings against his countryman, who has only won one set during that one-sided series. Gasquet, 27, whose only previous appearance in the last four at a major was at Wimbledon in 2007, is the first Frenchman to get to the semi-finals in New York since Cedric Pioline in 1999. The victory was only his second in 10 meetings with Ferrer, a series which had also seen him claim just two sets out of 20. Next up is Nadal, against whom he has lost all 10 meetings as a professional, although he did beat the great Spaniard in their junior days.
"I beat him when I was 13 in a junior tournament in Tarbes in France. Rafa is a good friend of mine so it'll be great to play him," said Gasquet. Nadal said he remembered that 1999 defeat. "I lost 6-4 in the third set. It was a great match and was one of my first international tournaments. It was like the World Cup of junior tennis," he said. "Richard played amazing that day -- it was a great battle for me." Gasquet had fought out the longest match of the tournament to see off Milos Raonic in the fourth round but showed no ill effects from that four-hour, 40-minute slugfest as he raced through the first two sets against Ferrer.
Lacklustre India qualify for semis despite loss to Nepal K
ATHMANDU: Defending champions India dished out yet another lacklustre performance to go down 1-2 against hosts Nepal but still managed to sail through to the semifinals of the SAFF Football Championships here today. The six-time champions were clearly the inferior side in their last Group A match at a packed Dasarath Stadium and they were lucky to make it to the last four stage after Pakistan beat Bangladesh 2-1 in another simultaneous match. For Nepal, who were cheered by a vociferous home crowd, Anil Gurung and Jumanu Rai scored in the 70th and 81st minutes while Syed Rahim Nabi pulled one back for India in stoppage time (92nd minute) with an impressive side
volley. India and Pakistan ended on four points behind Group A toppers Nepal — who garnered seven points from two wins and one draw — but Wim Koevermans’ men qualified for the semifinals as group runners-up having beaten Pakistan in the headto-head encounter. A lucky India had beaten Pakistan 1-0 in their campaign opener thanks to an own goal by their rival skipper before escaping with a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh with captain Sunil Chhetri scoring an injury time equaliser. According to tournament rules, if two teams are on equal points in the group stage, head-to-head result will first decide which team will go through to the next stage and goal difference rule comes to play only after this. In case of India, since they
have beaten Pakistan earlier, there is no need to look at goal difference. In the semifinals, India will play the Group A winners which will be decided after tomorrow’s match between Maldives and Afghanistan, who are on six points each after winning both their earlier matches. Today’s result was the only second win for Nepal against India in 12 matches in all-time head-tohead contest, according to FIFA records. The earlier win by Nepal was through penalty shootout in the 1993 SAF Games in Dhaka after the two sides were locked 2-2 after regulation and extra time. The Indian defence was time and again tested by Gurung and Rai as Arnab Mondal, N Mohanraj and Nirmal Chhetri were chasing shadows most of the time.
The first goal was a result of setpiece movement that sent the Indian defence in a disarray. In the 70th minute, Sandeep Rai floated a cross-field ball and in the melee, Indian custodian Subrata Paul charged out. Biraj Maharajan beat his marker Mondal to head the delivery which hit the horizontal and Gurung, lurking around, just tapped home to give his team 1-0 lead. The Indian defenders, especially Nirmal, couldn’t match up to the speed of left-winger from Nepal, Rabin Shreshta who set up the second goal in the 81st minute. He overlapped down the wide left beating Nirmal and then kept a low cross which saw Jumanu evade Mondal to place an accurate angular left footer that went into the far corner of the net after beating Paul.

EW DELHI: International Olympic Committee rejected Indian Olympic Association's compromise formula on the chargesheet clause even as a defiant IOA stuck to its stand that Indian law would prevail on these matters, further jeopardising the country's chances of a quick return to the Olympic fold. In its Special General Body

Meeting last month, the IOA had come up with a compromise formula to IOC's directive to bar chargesheeted persons from contesting elections with the proposal that the sanction be applied only to those who are convicted and sentenced to a jail term of more than two years. But the IOC stood firm on its earlier stand during its Executive Board (EB) meeting yesterday ahead of the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires and asked IOA to accept all demands in full before conducting elections. Jitendra backs IOC diktat; asks IOA to amend constitution
N
EW DELHI: The Sports Minister Jitendra Singh backed International Olympic Committee's decision to stick to its stand on the chargesheet clause and urged the IOA to incorporate the required amendments in its constitution so that the interest of country's sportspersons do not suffer. The IOC clearly told the Indian Olympic Association to adopt the chargesheet clause in its constitution in order to ensure good governance. "There are certain issues IOC is insisting on. One of the major ones is ethics and good governance. So, I hope better sense prevails and the IOA incorporate some of the changes, which the IOC has suggested," said the Minister. "I don't think there should be a problem in incorporating these changes because it is a part of the Olympic Charter. It is nothing new that the IOC is saying," he added. Jitendra termed IOA's reluctance to amend its constitution in accordance with the IOC's suggestion as "sad" and asked the association to give preference to the interest of the sportspersons. "It is sad that the IOA did not modify their constitution as per the international guidelines, international benchmark or as per the Olympic Charter. "I would like to request the IOA to consider the modifications in their constitution, keeping in mind the interest of the sportspersons and not some individuals' interests. It is very very unfortunate that some individuals' interests took precedence over nation and the sportspersons," he said.
in December 2012, the IOC has been working towards finding a solution to improve good governance within the National Olympic Committee (NOC)," the

IOC said in a statement on its website. "The IOC provided the IOA with a roadmap and sent observers to the IOA's General As-
sembly (GA) that took place on 25 August. The EB heard a report that the GA had approved most of the amendments to the IOA's constitution requested by the IOC, but one specific clause had not been adopted. This clause, which deals specifically with the eligibility of members, is key to the good governance of the NOC and needs to be fully accepted before the suspended IOA can proceed with the elections. An official notification of the IOC's position will be sent to the IOA," the statement read. Despite the tough stand of the IOC, the suspended IOA continued to be in a defiant mood, saying Indian law would prevail on these matters and the world body cannot force these provisions upon it. "We can't go beyond the law of our land. We will make our constitution according to the law of the land. We have clearly told the two-member IOC delegation that we can't go beyond the law of the land," said the suspended IOA's president Abhay Singh Chautala. India was suspended from the Olympic movement in December last year after tainted Lalit Bhanot, who is facing corruption charges linked to the scandal-hit 2010 Commonwealth Games, was elected secretary-general of the IOA.

AVI MUMBAI: St Augustine High School, Nerul Boys won both the under-14 and under-17 Navi Mumbai Municipal Area Inter School Hockey titles. The tourneys were organised by NMMC Sports Office in conjunction with Thane District Sports Office under the aegis of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Fr Agnel’s Multipurpose Sports Complex, Vashi. In the Boys Under-14 final against hosts and defending champions Fr Agnel’s Multipurpose School, Vashi, St Augustine overcame a one goal deficit by
winning in tie breakers 4-2 after both teams scored once in either half. In the Boys Under-17 final, defending champions St Augustine, Nerul however dominated the show despite missing numerous chances, before overpowering St. Mary's ICSE School, Koperkhairne 3-0. Results (Finals): Boys Under -14: St Augustine High School, Nerul 4* (Pratik Gaware-2, Shivam Yadav, Shamit Hegde) beat Fr Agnel’s Multipurpose School, Vashi 2* (Siddharth Damre, Sahil Rathod) 1 (FT 1-1, HT 0-1). ISAKHAPATNAM: Manprit Juneja missed out on a welldeserved double hundred by only seven runs while New Zealand top-order got some much needed batting practise against India A bowlers as the second unofficial 'Test' between the two sides predictably ended in a draw. In reply to New Zealand A's first innings score of 437, Indians finished their first innings seven runs short at 430. In the second innings, the Kiwis finished at 176 for three in 51.2 overs as the umpires decided to call off the match after taking consent of the two skippers. In all 62.5 overs of play was held on the final day. The honours were shared as both the Test matches failed to yield any positive outcome for either of the two teams. The only interest in final day's play was whether young Juneja (193, 362 balls, 20x4, 1x6) would get to score his second first-class double hundred but seamer Mark Gillespie (4/80 from 29.3 overs) dismissed him caught by Corey Anderson. Resuming the day at 408 for seven, India added 22 more runs with Juneja scoring 15 off them. But Gillespie used his slower delivery to good effect as Dhawal Kulkarni (10) was caught and bowled. Juneja was the next man out, while Imtiaz Ahmed
was also castled by him as he finished with four wickets in the match. With a result out of question, New Zealand A skipper Tom Latham (61, 100b, 7x4) put his head down to get some runs, which will help his confidence before the start of the List A series. After Neil Broom (0) was trapped leg before by Kulkarni, Latham in company of Carl Cachopa (76, 139 balls, 13x4) added 128 runs for the second wicket and the contest was as good as over. Left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhurv (2/45) removed the two set batsmen in successive overs but it was too late in the day.

Present Pak players lack hunger for success: Qasim
KARACHI: Former Pakistan spinner and chief selector Iqbal Qasim has slammed the national team players for lacking "personal pride" and "hunger for success". "In Imran's time and even after that we played with aggression and flair. Today our team lacks these things and that is hurting progress of players," said Qasim, who resigned as chief selector two months back after handpicking the squad for the West Indies tour. "What I have noticed is that in the past we had a formidable side because most of the players were hungry for individual records and success and took pride in their own performances. I saw these in players like Imran, Miandad, Wasim, Inzamam, Saeed Anwar, Moin, Rashid, Malik, Yousuf and many others," he said.
Ex-ICC president Ehsan Mani backs decision to stick with DRS KARACHI: Former ICC president Ehsan Mani has backed the decision of the sport's governing body to persist with the Decision Review System (DRS), which according to him has helped in reducing the mistakes of umpires. "I think they are only minor issues now related to the technology use in the DRS but they are not serious enough to warrant suspending the use of the UDRS," Mani told PTI. Mani has been visiting Pakistan to supervise the bidding process by the Pakistan Cricket Board for the sale of broadcasting rights of the upcoming home series against South Africa and Sri Lanka in the UAE. Mani, a Pakistani who is settled in the United Kingdom, said he had no doubt that DRS would only get better with time.

Hattrick for Mary Ann, Tania second in National Women’s chess K
OLKATA: Local favourite Mary Ann Gomes pipped Tania Sachdev and Soumya Swaminathan with a better tie-breaking score to clinch a hat-trick of titles in the 40th Women’s National Premier Chess Championship here today. It was a heartbreak for overnight leader Soumya as the Pune girl lost to Padmini Rout in the final round to slip to third, while top seed Tania Sachdev who had suffered early losses finished second with six points from last seven rounds. Mary Ann, who was on second spot, settled for a hard-fought draw against Ivana Maria Furtado who hails from Goa and the result was enough to earn a third national title in a row. Mary Ann, Tania and Soumya were locked on 7.5 points but the local girl had a better tie-breaking score (40.5) to pocket a prize purse of INR 1.75 lakh. Playing 14-year-old Ivana of Goa, Mary Ann found herself in an inferior position in a King’s Indian attack. But Ivana was equally nervous as she offered a draw despite being a piece ahead on the 25th move and Mary Ann promptly accepted. Odisha’s Padmini cleared the deck for Mary Ann later by outplaying the overnight leader Soumya, who was in tears after her loss. The find of the championship
was clearly the National junior girls champion, Ivana, who in her maiden National Premier gained 24 Elo points, while Bhakti Kulkarni lost 26 Elo points.
