hile most colleges across the city have a maximum of 10-15 security guards on their premises, Siddharth College of Commerce and Economics, Fort, has hundreds of uniformed policemen, along with personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Riot Control Force (RCF) stationed inside and all around the college.

Though this situation had been continuing for almost a month, students are now feeling like they are in jail after more security was called up to stop Anandraj Ambedkar (Republican Sena), Prakash Ambedkar (Bahrip Bahujan Mahasanga) and Ramdas Athavle (Republican Party of India) from entering the college premises.

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration is planning to build three new dams to meet the city’s ever growing demand for water.

This is because the civic body is not optimistic about the prospects of bringing in water from Koyana Dam to the city. The idea was the brain child of legislator Ravindra Waikar, Prakash Darekar and Vinod Shelar who tabled the discussion in the BMC. The BMC has four major dams – Modak Sagar, Bhatsa, Tansa and Middle Vaitarna those supply drinking water supply to city. According to hydraulic department which is responsible for the water supply the city’s requirement is 12,53,830 million liters (ML) and everyday it is increasing as uncontrolled influx is coming to city.

In the present scenario, as the growth rate is increasing in city to bring the proportionate water to city, the civic body needs to build one dam after every seven years.

On that line, the BMC had planned three major dams – Gargai (450 Million lire per day MLD) Pinjal (865MLD) and Damanganga (1586 MLD) for next two decades.

Darekar had proposed to bring water from Koyana Dam. All the BMC would’ve needed to do would be to build a canal or tunnel to bring in the water from Koyana Dam to the city.

Gargai project is under permission and planning stage. It will be complete by 2015 and will be ready to hold water by 2016 monsoon. The other two dams will start simultaneously.

Even though the Fire Services claimed that no emergency calls were received by department, the heavy showers kept its officials on toes on Monday.

HERE’S another bit of irony on a day seemingly buzzing with instances.

Which is why Bodh Gaya itself was such a shock. The place was full of tourists, the roads (made with Japanese technology) were really as smooth as Hema Malini’s cheeks (a Lalu quote, not ours) and it was all so eminently civilised and unlike the rest of Bihar, we blinked.

Later in the afternoon we set off on the way back, accompanied by gunmen fore and aft and in-between the two buses, thanks to some of our school mates being highly positioned bureaucrats and members of the IPS. This time it took more than seven hours.

The sooner the perpetrators of yesterday’s bombing outrage are caught, the better.

iving a major blow to the Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil and Home Minister R.R. Patil, the Congress yesterday virtually dented the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) stronghold in a big way by sweeping Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation.

This much-hyped election in western Maharashtra saw tussle between the ruling alliance partners. The Congress dethroned NCP from Municipal Corporation by winning 40 of the 76 seats. Sharad Pawar’s NCP, which controlled the corporation for the last five years, got only 18 seats. Both Jayant and R.R. Patil were stationed in Sangli and have frantically campaigned for NCP candidates.

Shah garnered 2,283 out of the total of 4,182 votes polled, followed by Congress candidate, Varsha Gopani, while the NCP candidate Seema Jain remained a distant third with 859 votes.

fter a major boost through victory in Sangli-MirajKupwad Municipal Corporation election, Jubilant Congress leaders yesterday indicated that a large number of party workers are making a strong case for going solo in the forthcoming Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections slated for 2014.

The Congress party’s aggressive posture comes close after they defeated its alliance partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The Congress, which plays the big brother role in the 15-year-old alliance rule in the state, dared its partner NCP to snap the ties with saffron Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance in various local and civic bodies.

State postal dept to help U’khand flood victims

n an attempt to help and relief for Uttarakhand flood victims, the Maharashtra Postal Circle decided to accept and dispatch relief material to Uttarakhand by post, free of cost. This free service is available at all Head Post Offices in Maharashtra & Goa up to July 20.

Any individual, institution, agency or an NGO can send

relief material to Uttarakhand without paying any postage fee. In this facility, one can send cloths, blankets, woolens, medicines, tarpaulin, plastic sheets, torch, long shelf-life food as that would be helpful for the distressed people in flood hit north.

Postal officials expressed their inability to send fragile and breakable items or any other items that contains liquid as it is difficult to handle.

One package containing relief material should not be more than 35 kilos; else it would not be acceptable under free service.

The material should be securely packed by the sender and marked on top as ‘Relief Material for Uttarakhand’.

Accordingly, the package should be addressed to Senior Postmaster, Dehradun GPO, Dehradun-248001(Uttarakhand).

ollowing the recent bomb blasts at the Bodh Gaya temple in Bihar, the Mira Bhayandar unit of the Republican Party of India (RPI), led by district president Devendra Shelekar, condemned the attack by staging a rasta roko in Mira Road on Monday afternoon. In spite of heavy rains, RPI activists gathered to shout anti-government slogans and blocked traffic on the Bhayandar-Kashimira Road near Shivar Garden for a couple of hours. The agitation was withdrawn after the intervention of senior officials from the Thane (rural) police.

47-year-old woman from Trombay has alleged that she was assaulted and molested on her housing society premises after she intervened in a tiff between the assaulter’s wife and another resident.

The drama unfolded at around 8.30 am on Sunday morning at Mount View CHS, when a pet dog happened to lick the feet of a resident named Pawan Ban, who then slapped its 28-year old owner who also resides in the same society. The complainant and other ladies from the locality questioned Ban’s violent conduct and a quarrel ensued.

he MHB police have arrested two people in a case in which a senior citizen was run over by a car after being chased by officials from the excise department.

On Friday morning, hotelier Rakesh Shetty (26), who is also youth president of Bahujan Vikas Aghadi, saw a Fiat Palio being chased by excise officials who were riding in a Tata Sumo. Shetty decided to follow them. The excise officials managed to intercept the vehicle at the Sudhir Phadke Bridge (off Bhagwati Bridge). The Palio banged into the railing on the left side and then finally forked right and hit the divider killing a

Repeated adjournments sought by CBI irks HC

he Bombay High Court on Monday came down heavily on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the absence of its lawyers at the hearings of CBI’s petition seeking cancellation of bail granted to NCP leader Padamsinh Patil in the 2006 Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case.

This comes a month after Justice Abhay Thipsay, on June 24, had observed, “The petition seeking cancellation of bail was filed by CBI and the agency itself is asking for adjournments time and again. What is the use of this petition if it is not followed properly by CBI?” Former Maharashtra min-

To this, Justice Thipsay gave a last chance to the CBI and adjourned the hearing till July 17. “CBI is a big organisation. If one counsel is not there then it can send someone else to appear,” Justice Thipsay said.

hose aspiring to qualify for Civil Services, MBA and other class one jobs now have a spacious 4,000 sq ft area in the heart of the city, where they not only will get to read costly books free, but also get coaching from famous faculty members coming in from Delhi, free of cost or for a very nominal fee.

The Maharshi Dayanand Academy, which has been training not only civil servants but students attempting many other competitive exams since the past 20 years. The academy is brainchild of Vraj Patel, who himself couldn’t succeed in

Civil Services due to lack of procedural knowledge about the exam so decided to not let other aspirants suffer the same fate. He therefore started a library and guidance center for them.

As of now hundreds of his students are serving the government in different positions, including the present western region additional commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil and first Kaun Banega Crorepati winner Harwardhan Nawathe.

Patel has been running the library and career guidance center in Dadar in his home since last 20 years where he couldn’t accommodate more than 50 students at a

time. Meanwhile an NGO, coming to know of Patel and his work offered him 4,000 sq feet space, free of cost just 2 minutes away from Dadar station, on the eastern side. The only condition they put was that Patel will provide free coaching and library facility to the students preparing for the competitive exams.

Patel accepted this offer without any hesitation and also contacted some famous professors who have been giving coachings to Civil Services aspirants in Delhi who accepted his offer to teach students in his library.

Blame game over Bodh Gaya terror attack A

S expected, parties in the country have started politicising the terror attack at Bodh Gaya. The BJP probably thinks in the happening at the holy place, it has got a good stick to beat the state government with.

Only a couple of days ago, Narendra Modi had declared he would teach a good lesson to his arch enemy Nitish Kumar, Bihar’s chief minister. And the Congress secretary Digvijay Singh said that all nonBJP states should be careful – implying thereby that the BJP could be behind the attack at Bodh Gaya.

The Congress thinks that it would be wrong to jump to the conclusion that only a Muslim outfit – in this Indian Mujahideen – is behind the attack.

The blame game has started and it is likely to end only when NIA which has started the investigation, comes out with its report.

The BJP says the state government is responsible for the terror incident: It had two warning from intelligence agencies but it ignored them.

Instead of pointing accusing fingers at each other the political parties should have made a combined effort to identify the criminals. The sacred tree under which Lord Buddha is said to have got enlightenment and the sacred temple are attracting millions of Buddhists from all over the world. The terrorists planted as many as 12 bombs – three were found live and nine exploded – and this is nothing but a matter for grave concern.

Actually an ideal situation at a religious place would be there to enhance security, since there was no security at all. Existing activities have to be faced: security at Bodh Gaya – both inside and outside the temple complex should be increased.

T is once again the Article 370 on special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Again the BJP has thrown the first stone. The party’s top leader, L.K. Advani, has said that the Article should be scrapped. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said in reply: “Over our dead bodies.” He tends to over react but he is quite right in saying that the Article is sacrosanct.

The Article was the result of long discussions held between Srinagar and New Delhi at the time of the state’s accession to India. When the British quit in August 1947, they left it to the princely states either to join India or Pakistan. Keeping in mind the geographical proximity and the complexion of the population, Jammu and Kashmir shared borders with both India and Pakistan.

However, the state’s majority of population was Muslim.

The state’s ruler was a Hindu. He preferred to stay away from both India and Pakistan.

But he could not do so since the state was land locked. Pakistan did sign a Standstill Agreement with him to extend all facilities even though he found that it wanted the state’s ultimate integration with Pakistan.

New Delhi was against the Standstill Agreement since it was negotiating with the ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh, to join the Indian Union.

A way has to be found out to distance the civil and military sides from each other to avoid the combustible situations.

Enough lip service. Where is the action?

ONCE again India witnesses another round of serial bomb blasts, this time in the sacred city of Bodh Gaya in Bihar. Our Hon’ble Home Minister has already confirmed it as a ‘terror attack’, but quite clearly, it is nothing new. It seems the terrorists have attacked our country – particularly Bodh Gaya which is home to several Buddhist monks – as retaliation against the killing of Muslims in Myanmar.

After every such terror attack and the killing of poor civilians and security personnel, our PM can only utter the usual words to show his anguish, and repeats what has been said several times before.

Like an imposition thrust upon a student, our PM and other ministers keep saying, “...We will not be cowed down by terrorism! We will deal with terrorism with tough action and mete out the toughest punishment to the culprits. Our patience should not be tested...” and so on and so forth; while the routine dialogue of our incapable Union Home Minister is always,

After every such ghastly incident, security is beefed up not only in the state where the blasts occur but also nationwide, as if the ‘beefing up’ of security is essential only after these acts occur.

For decades, only words have flown and no firm action has ever been taken. How many more killings and terrorist attacks are we waiting for to take action against the perpetrators? Repeated attacks show how bold and desperate terrorists have become to disturb the peace and create tension in our country, and the number of attacks which have taken place since 2002 excluding the blasts which regularly occur in the Valley, is evidence of this fact.

Let us learn from America or shall I say Israel? Allow the armed forces to attack the nation or the occupied area harbouring terrorists and engineering brutal acts against us. It is understandable that no one would want a war which would certainly have its

own repercussions. But instead of watching our own die for no fault of theirs, will it not be better to totally stop terrorism once and for all? How long will this go on for? Doesn’t the HM have some moral responsibility and courage to take strong steps against the nation engineering these terror attacks?

Mere lip-service and statements which have no assurance will only prove that we are always tolerant and not fit for retaliation of any sort. We will be termed an ‘impotent’ nation. Will the PM prove that he is capable of ‘tough action’ too?

To begin with, why don’t we isolate the terror-sponsoring nation with no trade, commerce, transport, bilateral, cultural and diplomatic relations? Can we not ban sports and arts relations with the nation? We do not necessarily want war, but the government can at least take strong measures? year-old Priyanka Singh hanged herself on Sunday evening at her residence in Dadar’s Marwadi Chawl allegedly due to physical and mental torture over dowry by her husband and inlaws.

She took the extreme step on Sunday at around 5 p.m. when her in her in-laws and husband were not at home, and hanged herself using her sari tied to the ceiling fan.

covered from the house, she blamed her husband Om Prakash Singh, her father-in-law Shiv Shankar Singh, and her sister-in-law Gayatri Singh for her death.

Priyanka’s father has alleged that Gayatri had instigated the Singhs to

remove her from their house and get her brother married again as their dowry demands were not fulfilled.

According to Sachin Kadam (27), Singh’s neighbour, “The husband and in-laws had left for Badlapur at

Later, I called her up at 2:15 p.m, but she did not respond. I made several calls to her after that, but she did not answer my call. I called her husband and her in-laws, they too did not attend my call. At around 7 p.m., the news of her suicide was conveyed to me through a family friend who stays in Mumbai.”

According to neighbours, Priyanka hardly talked to neighbours, who suspect she was restricted to the confines of her home.

However, they never suspected any torture since they never heard any fighting or Priyanka calling out for

help.

According to Priyanka’s father, July 2 at 1:44 p.m and 2:12 p.m.

Priyanka had sent two text messages to her father, which read, “Please papa bhejo kisi ko. Guddi (Gayatri) aai hai. Mobile kheech rahi hai. Papa bhejo Ratnakar( Mishra) papa ko( a family friend).

Shankar Singh keh rahe hain hum unka kuch nahi bigaad sakte.”

Priyanka got married to Om Prakash Singh (28) in November 2012 through a family friend who knew both the families.

Her father also said, “She was physically and mentally tortured.

For days together, she would not be given any food and would be beaten up by father-in-law Shiv Shankar Singh, mother-in-law Pavitra, sisterin-law Gayatri and husband Om Prakash Singh.”

In November 2012, when she got married, a demand of Rs.5,00,000 was made. We paid Rs.1,00,000 in cash and the remaining Rs.4,00,000 was paid by cheque. Recently they made a demand for a Swift Dezire car or Rs.10 lakh in cash. We were not able to meet that demand.”

An FIR has been registered. We are investigating the matter. I do not want to reveal more,” said Vaishali Sarvade, investigating officer, Dadar police station.

It’s the monsoon now and while you might still be able to buy apples and grapes freely in the market, try to include seasonal fruits and vegetables in your diet as well. Here are a few monsoon fruits and vegetables that you should pick up on your next grocery trip.

Fruits Cherries: These are a monsoon specialty and you will find them in abundance. While picking up cherries, ensure that the ones that you pick are plump and fleshy because dense cherries are sweeter and juicier.

I work out regularly, eat well and think positive. It also helps to have friends who are as health conscious as I am.

What’s an ideal workout for you?

Currently, my workout schedule works well for me. I do weights three days a week, cardio on two days and reserve one day for legs and functional training each.

What’s your diet like?

When I get up at 6am, I have a protein shake. This is followed by breakfast at 9am. I usually have muesli, oats or four egg-whites. Lunch is at 1pm and it includes chicken with salad. Dinner is the same. I occasionally eat chapattis.

Is there anything you avoid eating?

Sweet, oily and fatty food.

What are your top three tips for a happy life?

Stay fit and healthy. Always have a positive approach because if you’re happy everything else will fall into place.

One detained in Bodh Gaya blasts, CCTV footage released

AYA/PATNA: One person was detained by the NIA on Monday in connection with the terror attack on Buddhism’s holiest shrine here even as authorities released the CCTV footage of the serial blasts at the historic Mahabodhi temple and adjoining areas.

As a team of investigators from NIA, NSG and other agencies searched for clues in yesterday’s 10 serial blasts at Bodh Gaya that left two monks injured, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the state government will make a proposal to the Centre to ask CISF to take over the security of the shrine.

A team of the National Security Guard (NSG), which picked up samples from the area, has sent a preliminary report to the Union Home Ministry, saying the low-intensity bombs worked like improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and were

trigerred through analog clock timers. The bombs contained a mix of ammonium nitrate and sulphur and were neatly packed in small cylinders, the report said.

Bihar Director General of Police Abhyanand said a person identified as Binod Kumar Barachatti has been detained on the basis of a voter Identity card in his name which was found during search inside the temple after the explosions.

He told newsmen in Patna that lab tests have so far confirmed the presence of ammonium nitrate in the crude low intensity bomb used in the blasts but there were no trace of TNT or other explosive material.

Papers containing the name of the location where it had to be planted was found pasted on each bomb, he said. “The name of the location is written in English and some words in Urdu,” he added.

12 dead in Secunderabad hotel collapse H YDERABAD: At least 12 persons were killed on Monday and 18 others injured when a 50 year rpt 50 year old building housing a Irani hotel, collapsed in Secunderabad here, police said.

The roof of the two-storeyed Hotel City Light and Bakery, located on R.P. Road in Secunderabad, crashed at around 6 a.m. resulting in the building collapse leaving a dozen dead. Besides, some others are still feared trapped, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma told PTI. The deceased include hotel staff and also customers who went to have tea and snacks in there, offi-

cials said. The injured were rushed to Gandhi hospital. Policemen, officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), fire department and CISF personnel were involved in relief and rescue operations to clear the debris and pull out those trapped.

“The rescue operations are continuing. As a precautionary measure we are taking help of experts in removing those trapped under the debris,” Sharma, who was monitoring the relief measures said.

GHMC commissioner M T Krishna Babu, who was also at the site of the accident, said there were several old buildings in the area and notices have been served in this regard to their owners. The collapsed building, however did not fall under that list, he said.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, along with ministers Danam Nagender, Geeta Reddy and Mukesh Goud, visited the collapse site and also Gandhi Hospital where the injured were admitted.

Nitish may soften stand on NCTC

EW DELHI: The multiple blasts in Bodhgaya, the first major terror attack at the pilgrimage spot and the rest of Bihar, may push Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to soften his stand in his opposition to set up anti-terror hub NCTC. Home Ministry officials believe that the terror attack on the Mahabodh temple in Bodhgaya may force the Chief Minister to soften his stand as he has to re-look the activities of terrorist groups in Bihar for safety of the state.

“The delay in setting up of NCTC will continue to hamper the government’s anti-terror initiatives. The sooner those oppose it realise its importance, the better for the country,” an official said.

13 bombs were planted: Shinde

s many as 13 bombs were planted inside the Mahabodhi temple complex in Bodh Gaya of which ten had exploded injuring two monks, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Monday.

“Today, I have the information of 10 blasts. A total of 13 bombs were placed there. I will not go into details where they were kept and all.

Two persons have been injured— 50-year-old Dorji and Bala Sanga (30),” Shinde told PTI. Shinde was speaking on the sidelines of a function for inauguration of a hospital of Central Reserve Police Force in Talegaon, about 100 kilometers from Pune.

Rains hamper relief ops; special IAF aircraft commissioned D

EHRADUN: Fresh spells of rain in parts of Uttarakhand on Monday damaged several houses in Chamoli district and hampered relief operations prompting authorities to engage an IAF transport aircraft for the mammoth exercise.

About eight houses in Urgam Valley of Chamoli district were damaged due to heavy rains forcing the occupants to vacate them and move to safer places, Chamoli’s District Magistrate S A Murugesan told PTI.

People living in those houses are unharmed as they have moved to safer places apprehending damage to the structures, he said.

IAF’s C-130 Hercules aircraft, commissioned after choppers engaged in the operations earlier failed to fly relief material to affected areas due to inclement weather, has also not been able to serve its purpose so far.

The plane returned from a sortie this morning without dropping relief packages in affected areas due to overcast skies and low visi-

bility conditions, NDMA member in charge of relief operations in the hill state, V.K. Duggal, told PTI. The aircraft is supposed to airdrop relief material in worst-hit Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Rudraprayag districts, including Kedarnath.

The process of cremating bodies is being carried out in Kedarnath area amid bad weather by a team of over 70 experts and trained personnel even as they are said to be facing food shortage.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Monday (July 08, 2013) a net 56.35 points (0.96%) and closed at the 5811 point level.

The market opened down with a gap at the 5833 points level and that level itself was the high of the session. It then declined sharply and turned into a range bound movement until 9.57 a.m. The index then declined further due to weakness in the rupee and registered the day’s low at the 5775 points level at 10.02 a.m. The market then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session and moved in a range of 58 points. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 34 were losers, while 16 were gainers. Some buying was witnessed in technology, IT and capital goods stocks, while heavy selling was seen in oil & gas, realty and auto stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 6.59%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 527 were gainers, 792 were losers and 47 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has entered the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator has risen above the slow D line (positive and a buy signal).

The formation of a Hammer after a major decline is a bullish reversal pattern but requires further bullish confirmations. The index has crossed below the 5 and 200 day’s moving averages in a single session. This is negative. However, the index is still above the 15 and 25 days moving averages. Further despite yesterday’s fall, the velocity parameters continue to remain positively trended. Both these indicate a positive bias. As such these are mixed signals. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 5754 point’s level.

Most of the analysts continue to believe that the rupee could decline further and may even test the 62 level against the dollar.

Coal Stocks At Thermal Power Plants Improve In June: CEA Coal stocks at thermal power stations in the country have shown an increase, mainly due to improved supplies of the fuel and lower demand for electricity. Only five plants had less than four days of coal stocks at their disposal as of June 27, according to Central Electricity Authority (CEA) data. “The overall fuel supplies have increased, a prime reason for improved coal storage at plants. Also, another reason is that the PLF or plant load factor of stations is declining due to less demand from the states,” a Power Ministry official told PTI.

10 Merchant Bankers For NHPC Stake Sale The government will tomorrow finalise merchant bankers for managing the disinvestment of hydel power producer NHPC, which is expected to fetch over Rs 2,200 crore to the exchequer.

As many as 10 merchant bankers, including Credit Suisse, ICICI Securities, SBI Cap and HSBC have evinced interest in managing the stake sale. The bankers are scheduled to make their presentation before the disinvestment department tomorrow. The government plans to sell 11.36 % of its stake, or its 120 crore shares of NHPC through Offer For Sale (OFS) in the domestic market.

RelCap PE Sells DTDC Stake For Rs 158 crore The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Capital’s private equity business has sold its entire stake in DTDC to French express logistics firm GeoPost SA for Rs 158 crore. “Reliance Private Equity has sold their entire 39.51% stake to French company GeoPost for Rs 158 crore,” DTDC Executive Director Abhishek Chakraborty told PTI yesterday. He said Reliance Private Equity had bought the stake in 2006 for Rs 66 crore.

HEME based concerts related to the monsoon season have become fashionable over the years.

The credit for starting the trend goes to the late Kumar Gandharva who presented a three hour programme entitled Geet Varsha, way back in 1966. Our music has a close connection with nature.

The best reflection of this connection is found in ragas like Malhar which is a principal monsoon raga and Bahar which is the main springtime raga. Pancham Nishad took the initiative and organised the first major concert of the monsoon season this year at the Nehru Centre.

Budhaditya Mukherjee and Ulhas Kashalkar, two outstanding musicians of the present era were featured in this concert. Budhaditya is the ace sitarist of the country. His presence and his music exudes quiet dignity, authority and serenity. It is a pity that he is not heard enough in Bombay. He played the raga 'Miyan Ki Malhar'. This raga, when played with proper use of glissandos (meend) and gamak (oscillations) really blooms in all

Outstanding musicians Budhatiya Mukherjee and Ulhas Kashalkar regaling the audience. its glory. Budhaditya's 'Miyan Ki Malhar' certainly conformed to this description. The trills on the note komal gandhar, the scintillating super fast taans and particularly the descending ones really rendered the audience speechless with admiration. He also played splendid alaaps in the raga 'Des'. The sense of yearning which 'Des' conveys came across with brilliance through Budhaditya's rendition. Ojas Adhia, the young tabla player who accom-

panied him was in perfect sync with the maestro.

Ulhas Kashlakar has been dominating the concert stage for over a decade. Kashalkar is reputed for the quality of his music. It has classical solidity and unsurpassed dignity about it. His voice, over the years, has become broad but it retains the sweetness which comes naturally to him. He sang the raga 'Gaud Malhar', 'Kahe Ho'. The bada khyal composed by Sadarang is known for its exqui-

site and ageless beauty. Kashalkar sang it with the requisite emotion and his elaboration was punctuated with energetic taans. The swoops timed perfectly with Suresh Talwalkar keeping the beat on the tabla. He also sang 'Balma Bahar Aayee' the traditional bandish as well as the tarans which has Persian words. Kashalkar also sang a composition in the raga 'Surdasi Malhar'. Sudhir Nayak provided superb sangat on the harmonium.

ave you ever heard blind singers and musicians rendering Hindi golden oldies?

A new music show called Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se is the latest trendsetting show which has 30 blind singers and musicians. The producer of the show, Nandu Kadam says, “This is one of the most interesting shows in recent times and the popular songs of the ’50s and ’60s will be sung by these ‘different’ singers for whom their handicap is not a deterrent and their performance is as good as any normal singer. The response has been excellent and the audience is only increasing.”

by Sadanam Balakrishnan in the Kathakali style. In order to explore the Chhau style, Santosh became the disciple of Guru Janmay Joy Sai Babu and modern dance under the guidance of the veteran Narendra Sharma.

Besides the modern contemporary dance numbers that had flashes of innovation with the touch of ballet, it was interesting to see the dancers performing ‘Sabar Topke’ that portrays the hunters escapade, as they venture out to catch their prey. The piece-deresistance of the evening was ‘Yodha’ which is martial dance with swords and shields. The dancers performed this number with vitality and enthusiasm creating a great impact on the audience, that included the veteran Hema Malini. Kudos to Santosh Nair and his talented team of dancers.

HE first look of Cotstown Pictures’ and producer Saurabh Pradhan and writer-director Kedar Shinde’s ‘Shrimant Damodarpant’ was unveiled recently at a suburban hotel amidst the cast and crew. The film has Bharat Jadhav in the leading role reprising his role in the popular play Shreemant Damodarpant wherein he essayed the character of Damu who has two faces -- one is an innocent bumpkin, who, in the evenings is possessed by the spirit of a 19th century Maratha soldier, putting everyone into a predicament.

The movie marks the debut of Abhinay Sawant, the son of popular comedienne Nirmitee Sawant and TV star Mrunal Dusanis, veteran Sunil Barve and Varad Chavan, Alka Kubal Athalye, Piyush Ranade, Jayraj Nair among others. Music is by Vaishali Samant and Kamlesh Bhadkamkar with songs by Sonu Nigam and Abhijeet Kosambi. Lyrics are

The DoP is Sanjay Memane. Background music is by Amar Mohile and editing by V.N. Mayekar. The film releases on July 26 all over the state.

Heat, will travel to Mumbai, India from July 16-19 to conduct a variety of events to continue the growth of the game and connect with NBA fans locally. Bosh will be the 22nd NBA or WNBA player or legend to travel to India since 2006.

“I am excited for the chance to visit India and help build interest in the game I love,” said Bosh. “The NBA is a global game and I hear that basketball is becoming pretty popular over there so I am looking forward to teaching kids that may end up in our league one day.”

Garcia was involved in various women's professional programs in Spain, Denmark, and Finland for almost 20 years prior joining the BFI. Shiva Thapa strikes gold at Asian C’ships N

EW DELHI: Teen sensation Shiva Thapa (56kg) reaffirmed his status as the rising star of Indian boxing as he became the youngest pugilist from the country to clinch a gold medal at the Asian Championships in Amman, Jordan.

India, suspended internationally for nearly a year now due to administrative wrangling in the federation, rounded off the campaign with a gold, two silver and a bronze while fighting under the International Boxing Association's flag.

The silver medals came through L Devendro Singh (49kg) and Mandeep Jangra (69kg), while the bronze was bagged by Manoj Kumar (64kg).

The 19-year-old from Assam, defeated home favourite Obada Alkabeh on a split decision of 2-1 after fighting out a tactically superior bout. The nimble-footed

boxer, who made his Olympic debut in London last year, thus followed Suranjoy Singh (2009) and Rajkumar Sangwan (1994) into the history books as a rare Indian gold-medallist at the premier continental event.

"Shiva fought an excellent bout. He applied his brain and dominated all three rounds. The decision may have been split but he was clearly the better boxer among the two," national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu told PTI from Amman.

But it was disappointment for another rising star L Devendro Singh (49kg), who went down fighting to Kazakhstan's Temertas Zhussupov, the Strandja Memorial Tournament winner from Kazakhstan.

Devendro, also a London Olympian, lost on a split decision of 1-2. "It was a very close bout. and even though he lost, I am Devendro fought his heart out very satisfied with his perform-

ance. To me he is shaping up to be an excellent boxer," said Sandhu.

"It is a brilliant performance considering the circumstances in Indian boxing . None of my boys disappointed me. Even the ones who lost, gave fine performances, I am very happy," he added.

Both these boxers are being managed by Anglian Medal-Hunt Company and Olympic Gold Quest. Mandeep also ended up on the losing side after putting up a gallant fight to settle for silver.

He lost to 2010 Asian Games gold-medallist Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan.

"Mandeep is very young and inexperienced but he fought very well, showed a lot of heart and produced a brilliant performance. Everybody expected his to be a one-sided bout but Mandeep matched him blow for blow," said Sandhu.

United SC’s future uncertain Nanjappa’s career not threatened

EW DELHI: After AIFF's development side Arrows, another major I-League outfit, United Sports Club's future has been thrown into uncertainty due to absence of sponsors.

The Kolkata-based club's problems started after it lost its financially-hit sponsors Prayag as a fallout of the chit-fund scam in Bengal. "We are going through problems as far as sponsors are concerned. Prayag is no more our sponsors and we have struggling ever since," team director Nabab Bhattacharya told PTI from Kolkata.

Even as the fear of the club closing down looms, Bhattacharya said they will try their level best to rope in a sponsor before the seventh edition of the I-League kicks off later this year.

"There is no question of closing down. We are confident of getting a sponsor before the

league," Bhattacharya said when asked if the club would shut shop if it failed to rope in a sponsor.

The club, which is home to some of the top I-League players including long-standing Nigerian striker Ranty Martins, has been on the lookout for sponsors for over two months. Former Dempo SC star Ranty has scored over 150 goals in the league.

Sources close to United SC said that the club has not been able to convince the sponsors.

Bhattacharya added that a few political leaders have also pledged their support to the club.

On Ranty, who had in the past expressed his desire to stay on at the club, Bhattacharya said it "was difficult to say anything until and unless things are resolved."

EW DELHI: Indian shooter Prakash Nanjappa's tryst with the sport will not end with a lone World Cup bronze medal as the 37-year-old is "recovering well" a few days after suffering a paralytic attack in the ongoing ISSF World Cup in Granada, Spain.

Nanjappa's condition is said to be improving over the last few days, according to National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder Singh.

"All his various faculties are working and he is doing well, recovering well under the care of his parents. The only thing is that he is having a bit of problems closing one of the eyes, and that should be okay with physiotherapy," Raninder said.

Asked about the shooter's future in the sport, the NRAI chief sounded optimistic. "We are very hopeful of having him of the ranges soon," he said.

Nanjappa had won the bronze medal in the men's 10 metre Air Pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon, Korea in March. Apparently, Nanjappa was not well while flying to Spain and his condition deteriorated on arrival. As he suffered the attack, Raninder got in touch with the Indian Embassy in Spain for assistance. Nanjappa flew back to the capital on Saturday along with fellow shooters Shreyasi Singh and Seema Tomar, before being accompanied by his father P N Panappa to his home town Bangalore.

ONDON: They've both played 92 Tests, they are both world-class batsmen and they both scored a hundred on Test debut, in each case away to India.

But it's the differences between England captain Alastair Cook and Australia skipper Michael Clarke that promise to make their personal Ashes battle particularly fascinating when the latest clash between Test cricket's oldest rival nations starts in Nottingham on Wednesday.

For while both men like to lead by example with the bat, Cook is seen as a popular leader, capable of handling 'awkward' characters such as Kevin Pietersen, but a cautious tactician whereas Clarke is regarded as imaginative in the field but has faced questions over his man-management.

Aged just 28, Cook has already scored more test hundreds -- 25 -than any other England batsman.

He took over as full-time captain when Andrew Strauss, Cook's old opening partner, retired after last year's home series loss to South Africa. Left-hander Cook then struck three hundreds as England achieved a rare series win in India.

But during a subsequent drawn series in New Zealand, Cook's field placings seemed overly defensive when compared to those of home skipper Brendon McCullum. In the return series against New Zealand earlier this season, England won both matches for a 2-0 series victory.

However, in the second Test in Leeds, with rain forecast, Cook delayed his declaration until New Zealand had been set an improbable 468 to win and then denied offFirst Test (July 10 - 14) spinner Graeme Swann some close catchers. ORT OF SPAIN: India will have to play to their full potential when they meet Sri Lanka in their last league match here today to keep alive their hopes of making it to the final of the tri-nation ODI series.

The Indians, who rediscovered their spark courtesy the crushing victory over the West Indies, will seek to keep the momentum going in the crucial game against the Lankans, who will be equally determined to secure a berth in the final. It is a must-win situation for the Indians but they may have a slight edge over Sri Lanka as the islanders would not get any rest due to the rain-forced postponement of their game against the West Indies to be completed.

On the flip side, the Indians will have to wait until at least today morning to know the mathematical calculations with regards to the finals berth given that all three teams are in with a chance. The West Indies-Sri Lanka match, which was into its 20th over, had to be

postponed to the reserve day today after rain halted play.

The Indians have no option but to wait for the result of this game to know exactly what they need to do to enter the final. Bopanna touches career-best fifth rank post Wimbledon in doubles charts

Bopanna with French partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin reached the semifinals at the grass court Grand Slam, losing to eventual winners Mike and Bob Bryan.

"It is an extremely proud moment for my team and myself, as this ranking is a true testament of the many years of hard work, focus and determination. Being for the first time, the highest ranked Indian makes this all that more special and is an added motivation to perform

better with every passing game," Bopanna said.

The Indian though said it difficult to say if he would like to continue with Roger-Vasselin. "It is too early to speculate, though Eduardo and I are in conversation on continuing this partnership given the great run we have had in the two weeks at Wimbledon," he said.

Murray, Djokovic are new age warriors now

Andy Murray's Wimbledon triumph on Sunday, when he beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 in the final, was Britain's first by a male player since Fred Perry in 1936. Djokovic and Murray have now contested three of the last four Grand Slam finals. Meanwhile, Roger Federer, the deposed champion of Wimbledon who was knocked out in the second round this time around, will find himself at number five in the world on Monday, his lowest ranking for over a decade.

Until he won his seventh Wimbledon 12 months ago, the 31-year-old had not won a major since the 2010 Australian Open, a 10-tournament gap at the majors.
