hile most colleges across the city have a maximum of 10-15 security guards on their premises, Siddharth College of Commerce and Economics, Fort, has hundreds of uniformed policemen, along with personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Riot Control Force (RCF) stationed inside and all around the college. Though this situation had been continuing for almost a month, students are now feeling like they are in jail after more security was called up to stop Anandraj Ambedkar (Republican Sena), Prakash Ambedkar (Bahrip Bahujan Mahasanga) and Ramdas Athavle (Republican Party of India) from entering the college premises. Do you think terror attacks can be prevented by enhancing additional security measures? Dashrat Pawar Professional Yes. If you enhance more security measures, it would mean more hurdles to terrorists to play their evil games.
Bhushan Joshi Insurance Executive No. Police need to take multi-pronged approach and need to increase Internet surveillance. Also informers should be inducted to get intelligence. Kajal Gohil Homemaker No. Terrorists are not dropout students. They are trained professionals. Only frisking and nakabandis will not prevent terror attacks.

he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration is planning to build three new dams to meet the city’s ever growing demand for water. This is because the civic body is not optimistic about the prospects of bringing in water from Koyana Dam to the city. The idea was the brain child of legislator Ravindra Waikar, Prakash Darekar and Vinod Shelar who tabled the discussion in the BMC. The BMC has four major dams – Modak Sagar, Bhatsa, Tansa and Middle Vaitarna those supply drinking water supply to city. According to hydraulic department which is responsible for the water supply the city’s requirement is 12,53,830 million liters (ML) and everyday it is increasing as uncontrolled influx is coming to city. In the present scenario, as the growth rate is increasing in city to bring the proportionate water to city, the civic body needs to build one dam after every seven years. On that line, the BMC had planned three major dams – Gargai (450 Million lire per day MLD) Pinjal (865MLD) and Damanganga (1586 MLD) for next two decades. Darekar had proposed to bring water from Koyana Dam. All the BMC would’ve needed to do would be to build a canal or tunnel to bring in the water from Koyana Dam to the city. Welspun Infratech Ltd has submitted their proposals to the state. The state is asking various government and non-governmental agencies to calculate their requirement of water in future. However, the civic administration has said that it is determined to construct three new dams Gargai, Pinjal and Damanganga for future demand of the city. Gargai project is under permission and planning stage. It will be complete by 2015 and will be ready to hold water by 2016 monsoon. The other two dams will start simultaneously.
Most roads in Mira Bhayandar were flooded, after heavy rains lashed the area on Monday.
VASTU TIP OF THE DAY
he heavy downpour which began early Monday morning resulted in water-logging in several parts of the twin-city of Mira Bhayandar. Water-logging was reported mainly from Kanakia, Ramdev Park, Naya Nagar, Kashimira and Bakery Lane areas of Mira Bhayandar. People especially school going children faced tremendous hardships. Pothole ridden roads and ongoing construction activities taken up by the civic administration added to the woes of pedestrians and motorists. Several schools including the RBK school in Mira Road announced a holiday for the afternoon shift students. Even though the Fire Services claimed that no emergency calls were received by department, the heavy showers kept its officials on toes on Monday.

Forget Guatemala, Mumbai is much more dangerous!
This picture was taken from a high-rise on Nepean Sea Road and the area in the front, greenlit by tube lights is Priyadarshini Park. On the left is the sea and in the distance, one can see twin towers and Antilia, the Ambani “home”. It is a picture filled with light and energy but it is not a pretty sight, certainly not on the lines of the world’s great cities like New York or Paris or London or Frankfurt, certainly not like Rome. We’ve missed our chances to be a really great city and now, unless there is some miracle of change of heart among citizens (forget the government), unless we pull together with a common vision, Mumbai is going to be the world’s biggest uninterrupted slum, highlighted by the gated, secured, infrastructured, exclusionary developments that are sold as luxury homes in Mumbai, where 70 per cent of the population lives in Third World conditions.
come out with a competition for the best written articles and photographs on the subject of violence against health care personnel and services, operating in the face of danger. What price Guatemala, when in Mumbai, if you decide that a doctor hasn’t attended quickly enough to your relative, you can just beat him or her up. And surely Guatemala has no parallel to our own beloved elected leaders actually leading the vandalisation of hospitals when one of their number died a death foretold! Remember the Singhania
hospital in Thane vandalized by the Shiv Sena a decade ago? It seemed to set a trend that has been followed by individuals and groups with a fair degree of impunity. So maybe Paramedic Dymott should have headed for aamchi Mumbai, where medics, paramedics and everyone in between really live fast and dangerous lives! Anyway, the series can be caught on August 3 at 6.40am and 7.40 pm on BBC World News, and again on August 4 at 1.40 pm on BBC World News. Azad Shrivastav | ADC
THE BBC World News commences a new series from August 3 that promises to be really interesting. It is tagged The Toughest Place to be, a series documentary which offered various working or retired professionals in the United Kingdom a different and more challenging working environment in the same profession. These individuals travel to a foreign country to learn and work under the new environment for certain number of days. The first one in the series explores the world of the paramedic through Angie Dymott, who leaves her job as a paramedic in Cardiff, South Wales, to join the Bomberos of Guatemala City. For two weeks, she lives and works with the combined paramedics and firemen, as they race to the scenes of gangland killings and drive-by shootings. Swapping her roomy, high-tech, state-of-the-art ambulance for a cramped minibus, Angie sees more bloodshed and killings in a few days than in all her years on the job in Wales. Decades of civil war have left Guatemala City close to chaos and as she arrives in this Central American country, will she be a useful member of the team or a merely hindrance? What a coincidence that the Press Institute of India (PII) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) should at practically the same time, have

B is for blasts – at Bodh Gaya
HERE’S another bit of irony on a day seemingly buzzing with instances. Ani Choying Dolma is an internationally reputed singer of Buddhist hymns and chants who has toured extensively in North America, Asia and Europe. She is a philanthropist dedicated to the welfare of Buddhist nuns, who founded the Arya Tara School in Ani Choying Dolma 2000 for nuns. The school runs with the help of proceeds from her concerts tours, CD sales and donation. Drolma is all set to give her first performance, free of cost in Mumbai at St. Andrews Auditorium on Thursday 11th July at 7pm. On the other hand, there is Bodh Gaya facing bomb blasts for the first time. We visited (also for the first time in our lives) in December 2003, traveling from Patna with two bus loads of school mates on a specially happy trip. This was when Bihar was still

Lalu land, Nitish Kumar being a distant, seemingly impossible dream. From Patna, we took the bypass, went through Jehanabad which was probably the most lawless region in the state, and finally reached Bodh Gaya after several stops, a mere 110 km away, after nearly six hours. The roads were the worst we have ever traveled over. We should have taken 2 hours and 20 minutes, tops. Which is why Bodh Gaya itself was such a shock. The place was full of tourists, the roads (made with Japanese technology) were really as smooth as Hema Malini’s cheeks (a Lalu quote, not ours) and it was all so eminently civilised and unlike the rest of Bihar, we blinked. Later in the afternoon we set off on the way back, accompanied by gunmen fore and aft and in-between the two buses, thanks to some of our school mates being highly positioned bureaucrats and members of the IPS. This time it took more than seven hours. The sooner the perpetrators of yesterday’s bombing outrage are caught, the better.

Major blow to NCP in Sangli civic poll

iving a major blow to the Rural Development Minister Jayant Patil and Home Minister R.R. Patil, the Congress yesterday virtually dented the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) stronghold in a big way by sweeping Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation. This much-hyped election in western Maharashtra saw tussle between the ruling alliance partners. The Congress dethroned NCP from Municipal Corporation by winning 40 of the 76 seats. Sharad Pawar’s NCP, which controlled the corporation for the last five years, got only 18 seats. Both Jayant and R.R. Patil were stationed in Sangli and have frantically campaigned for NCP candidates. However, the voters bolted doors on them through the

ballot box. Swabhimani Aaghadi, a front which included candidates of the Shiv Sena, BJP, RPI, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana and some independents managed to win only eight seats. Independent candidates were declared elected in nine wards, while the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate
opened its account by victory in a single ward. The result is seen as a major setback to the NCP and a boost for the Congress. The contest was become prestigious as top state-level leaders, including Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, his deputy Ajit Pawar, Industries Minister Narayan Rane took part in the campaign.

Shah garnered 2,283 out of the total of 4,182 votes polled, followed by Congress candidate, Varsha Gopani, while the NCP candidate Seema Jain remained a distant third with 859 votes. The BJP’s victory is being seen as a major setback and embarrassment to NCP legislator, Gilbert Mendonca and Congress MLC, Muzaffar Hussain. CONGRESS MAY GO SOLO IN 2014 POLLS By Suyash Padate
A
fter a major boost through victory in Sangli-MirajKupwad Municipal Corporation election, Jubilant Congress leaders yesterday indicated that a large number of party workers are making a strong case for going solo in the forthcoming Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections slated for 2014. The Congress party’s aggressive posture comes close after they defeated its alliance partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The Congress, which plays the big brother role in the 15-year-old alliance rule in the state, dared its partner NCP to snap the ties with saffron Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena alliance in various local and civic bodies. State Congress president
Manikrao Thakre while speaking to reporters slammed NCP for hurling abuses on the Congress Ministers and leaders during the campaigning for election to the just concluded Sangli Miraj Kupwada civic body. He said, “I will soon request Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to convene a coordination committee meeting as NCP has crossed its limit by stooping too low. The NCP leaders should have maintained restraint in leveling charges against Congress ministers and leaders”. “NCP should immediately break its unholy tie up with saffron parties which are currently in place in some local and civic bodies in the state. If there is any such alliance of Congress party, it will be severed immediately,” he pointed
out. Thakre was non committal whether Congress party will not ally with NCP in the coming general elections. The state Congress chief said, “This decision will be taken by the party high command. However, the party is receiving feedback from its members that the Congress will come stronger if it breaks alliance with NCP”. Congress party’s co-in charge for the state Syoraj Jeevan Walmiki said, “After assuming my charge in the state, I have received representation from a large number of party workers in favour of Congress party going alone. There are a large number of people who are currently in the NCP are ready to cross over. I will convey these views to party high command”.

Moreover the NCP had lined up their star campaigners, including Mendonca, Thane MP Sanjeev Naik and MBMC Mayor Catlin Pereira, who worked overtime, leaving no stone unturned to win the by-poll battle. A
47-year-old woman from Trombay has alleged that she was assaulted and molested on her housing society premises after she intervened in a tiff between the assaulter’s wife and another resident. The drama unfolded at around 8.30 am on Sunday morning at Mount View CHS, when a pet dog happened to lick the feet of a resident named Pawan Ban, who then slapped its 28-year old owner who also resides in the same society. The complainant and other ladies from the locality questioned Ban’s violent conduct and a quarrel ensued. Ban informed her husband, Indarjeet (52), who came out and started abusing the complainant, and then assaulted her with his umbrella. Several women who witnessed the attack rushed to her rescue,

The victim’s husband, Rajendra, told the ADC, “All the members of the society are scared of the Bans as they are violent people, and have assaulted the secretary of the society too. The police were reluctant to help until other residents came forward to stand by us and support our complaint.” “A case under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) has been registered. Senior citizen killed in police chase By Zuber Ansari
T
he MHB police have arrested two people in a case in which a senior citizen was run over by a car after being chased by officials from the excise department. On Friday morning, hotelier Rakesh Shetty (26), who is also youth president of Bahujan Vikas Aghadi, saw a Fiat Palio being chased by excise officials who were riding in a Tata Sumo. Shetty decided to follow them. The excise officials managed to intercept the vehicle at the Sudhir Phadke Bridge (off Bhagwati Bridge). The Palio banged into the railing on the left side and then finally forked right and hit the divider killing a
senior citizen. After the incident, the excise officials and the two accused in the Palio escaped from the spot. Shetty called the police and waited for over two hours at the spot, at which time the cops finally moved the corpse. The MHB police officials have refused to disclose the identities of the accused because of the seriousness of the case, and since excise officials are directly involved. According to sources from the MHB police station, the Fiat Palio was coming from Thane. It came from Ghodbunder Road and then changed course to go onto the Western Express Highway. The sources revealed that the illegal alcohol was to be supplied
at a BAR situated in Goregaon. However, soon after they were on the Western Express Highway, excise department officials started to chase them. They had been tipped off from their sources for the same. Upon reached the Dahisar check naka the Fiat Palio entered into the suburbs narrow lanes. The incident occurred at Phadke Bridge. The two accused arrested will be produced at the Borivli court on Tuesday. However, the police have not questioned any excise officials as yet. The police are also not revealing the identities of the excise officials who took part in the careless and negligent chase and escaped without notifying any officials.

he Bombay High Court on Monday came down heavily on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the absence of its lawyers at the hearings of CBI’s petition seeking cancellation of bail granted to NCP leader Padamsinh Patil in the 2006 Pawanraje Nimbalkar murder case. This comes a month after Justice Abhay Thipsay, on June 24, had observed, “The petition seeking cancellation of bail was filed by CBI and the agency itself is asking for adjournments time and again. What is the use of this petition if it is not followed properly by CBI?” Former Maharashtra min-

The Maharshi Dayanand Academy, which has been training not only civil servants but students attempting many other competitive exams since the past 20 years. The academy is brainchild of Vraj Patel, who himself couldn’t succeed in
Civil Services due to lack of procedural knowledge about the exam so decided to not let other aspirants suffer the same fate. He therefore started a library and guidance center for them. As of now hundreds of his students are serving the government in different positions, including the present western region additional commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil and first Kaun Banega Crorepati winner Harwardhan Nawathe. Patel has been running the library and career guidance center in Dadar in his home since last 20 years where he couldn’t accommodate more than 50 students at a

The only condition they put was that Patel will provide free coaching and library facility to the students preparing for the competitive exams. Patel accepted this offer without any hesitation and also contacted some famous professors who have been giving coachings to Civil Services aspirants in Delhi who accepted his offer to teach students in his library. But to bear the costs of lighting, maintaining books, etc, Patel has

Blame game over Bodh Gaya terror attack A
S expected, parties in the country have started politicising the terror attack at Bodh Gaya. The BJP probably thinks in the happening at the holy place, it has got a good stick to beat the state government with. Only a couple of days ago, Narendra Modi had declared he would teach a good lesson to his arch enemy Nitish Kumar, Bihar’s chief minister. And the Congress secretary Digvijay Singh said that all nonBJP states should be careful – implying thereby that the BJP could be behind the attack at Bodh Gaya. The Congress thinks that it would be wrong to jump to the conclusion that only a Muslim outfit – in this Indian Mujahideen – is behind the attack. The blame game has started and it is likely to end only when NIA which has started the investigation, comes out with its report. The BJP says the state government is responsible for the terror incident: It had two warning from intelligence agencies but it ignored them. Instead of pointing accusing fingers at each other the political parties should have made a combined effort to identify the criminals. The sacred tree under which Lord Buddha is said to have got enlightenment and the sacred temple are attracting millions of Buddhists from all over the world. The terrorists planted as many as 12 bombs – three were found live and nine exploded – and this is nothing but a matter for grave concern. Actually an ideal situation at a religious place would be there to enhance security, since there was no security at all. Existing activities have to be faced: security at Bodh Gaya – both inside and outside the temple complex should be increased.

T is once again the Article 370 on special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Again the BJP has thrown the first stone. The party’s top leader, L.K. Advani, has said that the Article should be scrapped. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said in reply: “Over our dead bodies.” He tends to over react but he is quite right in saying that the Article is sacrosanct. The Article was the result of long discussions held between Srinagar and New Delhi at the time of the state’s accession to India. When the British quit in August 1947, they left it to the princely states either to join India or Pakistan. Keeping in mind the geographical proximity and the complexion of the population, Jammu and Kashmir shared borders with both India and Pakistan. However, the state’s majority of population was Muslim. The state’s ruler was a Hindu. He preferred to stay away from both India and Pakistan. But he could not do so since the state was land locked. Pakistan did sign a Standstill Agreement with him to extend all facilities even though he found that it wanted the state’s ultimate integration with Pakistan. New Delhi was against the Standstill Agreement since it was negotiating with the ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh, to join the Indian Union.
the state have to give their consent. The Union cannot alter the undertaking unilaterally. Omar Abdullah’s angry reaction to Adavni’s suggestion on Kashmir represents his viewpoint. His grandfather, Sheikh Abdullah, paid a bigger price for not letting New Delhi spread itself beyond the three subjects. He spent 12 years in detention because he reminded New Delhi that it could not cross the line drawn by the Instrument of Accession. In fact, most people in Kashmir, not Jammu, want to nullify the Instrument of Accession and they demand azadi. Many remind New Delhi Prime Minister Jawaharlal’s promise that once things settled down in the
Pakistan has to be associated at some stage and the wishes of the people in the Kashmir Valley have to be taken into consideration. The talk of scrapping Article 370 will only frustrate the efforts of pro-India-elements in the state. They have bravely withstood all pressures and punishments. Many have lost their life. Their struggle has not ended yet.
Combustible situations
On top of it is the role of the army which is not careful some times. It is there in the state to defend the borders and come to the assistance of civil administration in rare cases. But this is not happening. It is there all over. Even the state chief minister has asked for its withdrawal to allow his police function. A recent incident in which two civilians have died at the hands of the army soldiers has enraged people and Omar Abdullah. True, the army has ordered an inquiry and promised to take action against those soldiers who are found guilty. Still the suspicion is that the army has taken revenge for eight jawans killed by militants. A way has to be found out to distance the civil and military sides from each other to avoid the combustible situations. One way to satisfy most people in the state is to implement Article 370. New Delhi should consider scraping the laws extended Kuldip Nayar by the Union after the arrest of Sheikh Abdullah who never doubted or challenged state, the people would be asked what their Kashmir’s accession to India but questioned India was, however, prepared to leave all choice was. Pakistan was the alternative. Yet, the measures taken beyond foreign affairs, subjects with the state except foreign affairs, those agitating against New Delhi for not defence and communications, the crux of defence and communications. NE might as well suggest to merchants and bankers that they should sell nothing for a greater price than they gave for it, should undertake the distribution of wealth for no profit, and should abolish money, as it would thus be rendered unnecessary. But since commercial and banking operations consist in nothing but selling for more than the cost price, this would be equivalent to an invitation to suppress themselves. It is the same in regard to governments. To suggest to governments that they should not have recourse to violence, but should decide their misunderstandings in accordance with equity, is inviting them to abolish themselves as rulers, and that no government can ever consent to do.

The error arises from the learned jurists deceiving themselves and others, by asserting that government is not what it really is, one set of men banded together to oppress another set of men, but, as shown by science, is the representation of the citizens in their collective capacity. Enough lip service. Where is the action? ONCE again India witnesses another round of serial bomb blasts, this time in the sacred city of Bodh Gaya in Bihar. Our Hon’ble Home Minister has already confirmed it as a ‘terror attack’, but quite clearly, it is nothing new. It seems the terrorists have attacked our country – particularly Bodh Gaya which is home to several Buddhist monks – as retaliation against the killing of Muslims in Myanmar. After every such terror attack and the killing of poor civilians and security personnel, our PM can only utter the usual words to show his anguish, and repeats what has been said several times before. Like an imposition thrust upon a student, our PM and other ministers keep saying, “...We will not be cowed down by terrorism! We will deal with terrorism with tough action and mete out the toughest punishment to the culprits. Our patience should not be tested...” and so on and so forth; while the routine dialogue of our incapable Union Home Minister is always,
Congress-DMK camaraderie
“We will eliminate terrorism!” After every such ghastly incident, security is beefed up not only in the state where the blasts occur but also nationwide, as if the ‘beefing up’ of security is essential only after these acts occur. For decades, only words have flown and no firm action has ever been taken. How many more killings and terrorist attacks are we waiting for to take action against the perpetrators? Repeated attacks show how bold and desperate terrorists have become to disturb the peace and create tension in our country, and the number of attacks which have taken place since 2002 excluding the blasts which regularly occur in the Valley, is evidence of this fact. Let us learn from America or shall I say Israel? Allow the armed forces to attack the nation or the occupied area harbouring terrorists and engineering brutal acts against us. It is understandable that no one would want a war which would certainly have its
own repercussions. But instead of watching our own die for no fault of theirs, will it not be better to totally stop terrorism once and for all? How long will this go on for? Doesn’t the HM have some moral responsibility and courage to take strong steps against the nation engineering these terror attacks? Mere lip-service and statements which have no assurance will only prove that we are always tolerant and not fit for retaliation of any sort. We will be termed an ‘impotent’ nation. Will the PM prove that he is capable of ‘tough action’ too? To begin with, why don’t we isolate the terror-sponsoring nation with no trade, commerce, transport, bilateral, cultural and diplomatic relations? Can we not ban sports and arts relations with the nation? We do not necessarily want war, but the government can at least take strong measures? Will the stop those buses running to the other nation, stop playing cricket with them, stop close consulates and
Discriminatory Cong policies
THIS has reference to the edit-piece ‘Congress-DMK ties as close as ever’ (ADC, July 8) which is the correct assessment of the relation between the Congress and the DMK. The latter pulling out of the UPA and the former helping Karunanidhi’s daughter, Kanimozhi, to get elected to the Rajya Sabha are classic examples of political opportunism which confirms the dictum that there are no permanent friends or foes in politics. The Chanakya that he is, the DMK patriarch knows how to play his cards well and he has done so to show he is one-up on his arch rival, Jayalalithaa, on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue by withdrawing his support to the UPA, knowing fully well that this would not endanger the government. On its part, the Congress has shown a lot of sagacity in helping his daughter to get reelected to the Upper House to make sure that it will have the DMK’s support if it comes to forming the next government at the Centre. In a way this is not bad because continued bitterness between two parties, which were allies until yesterday, does not help anyone.
THE Congress Government is overtly discriminating between the Congress ruled States and NonCongress ruled States in granting aid. The latest instance is that the Congress has reportedly granted Rs.4000 crores to Bihar in pursuit of a Special Status. It is perceived that this status is a token of appreciation to the Bihar CM for having walked out of the NDA on the elevation of Modi. On the other hand, states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu are meted out step-motherly treatment as the fund approved by the Planning Commission is not being granted to them. The people of Tamil Nadu who are also a part of this Nation are struggling to deal with a severe power shortage. When the TN Government requested the Centre to give them the power generated by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation and compensate the other States with the surplus power from their pool, the Centre did not pay heed. It is high-time the Congress is shown the door, to put an end to such nauseating despicable favours granted to such undeserving states and to prevent the further squandering of tax-payers’ money meant for Na— DR. Let us not keep twiddling our thumbs every time a terror act occurs, and start doing something about it. BJP leader Amit Shah’s statement during his visit to Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, of constructing the Ram Temple has again stated that temple politics is part of their agenda of Hindutava, to mislead the people with their eye on the 2014 General Elections. Even though the issue is before the SC, they have raised it only to fool the nation and to create the tension of communal politics. Since people have become clever the BJP must be taught a strong lesson by us rejecting them completely in the 2014 elections and wiping them out from the political map of the country. It is high time the BJP stops their political stunts in the name of religion and concentrates on important issues in the country. — Bhagwan Thadani

Today, children are taught to excel by scoring high marks but most end OF up failing when it comes LETTER THE DAY to practical application. India is the only country where coaching classes thrive and we need to learn from the education model of the Western world, so that Indian brains, which are some of the best in the world, are better utilized. Andy Murray is the real ‘winner’!

Temple politics and the BJP
Andy Murray ended Britain’s Wimbledon drought and won the Championship after 77 years to loud cheers. ENDING a 77 year hiatus and playing under pressure, Britan’s famous son - Andy Murray lifted the Wimbledon Men’s Single title defeating Novack Djokovic in three straight sets. With two Grand Slams to his name, Murray
has carved his own distinctive niche in history with tremendous help from his famous coach, the former tennis great, Ivan Lendl, who as a player won many Grand Slams, but not the Wimbledon. After the exit of the greats, it was the turn of the French woman Marion Bartoli who defeated the giant killing spree of the German Sabine Lisicki, to win the Ladies Single Title. Twin brothers - Bob & Mike Bryan – won their third Wimbledon Men’s Double Title and their 15th Grand Slam Title over all. — Mahesh Nair, Mumbai
ANDY Murray achieved the success of his lifetime by winning the Wimbledon Singles Championship in style with a straight set win over Novak Djokovic. Thus, Murray became a Wimbledon Champion from Britain after Fred Perry won the title 83 years ago.
Andy made it with easy powerful serving, deft placements and a great court play near the net. It was vintage tennis, as both players fought hard to make it a real final. He played the match of his life as he believed himself capable of winning the coveted trophy, and made easy meat of the World Number One, with his fighting display of the game. Murray played to a plan and deserved more as the home crowd cheered him all the way. The blue-eyed player got a chance to end Britain’s Wimbledon and made a match of it in the end to inscribe his name in the annals of World Tennis. He was ultimately made to fight out his last service game to achieve this incredible win, but Murray had his answers for all the craft Djokovic had up his sleeve. In the end it was game, set, match and Championship for the 6’ 3’’ tall English player. Kudos to Murray. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

PROBLEM?
Frizzy hair Frizzy hair is a common monsoon problem. Even if you don’t normally have wild hair, your locks can become frazzled during the monsoon. Monsoon market buys
Priyanka Singh scours the markets to find out what seasonal fruits and vegetables you should be piling on your plate this monsoon
W
hile most fruits and vegetables these days are available all year round, seasonal fruits and vegetables still hold a lot of importance and many medical practitioners recommend including them in your daily diet. It’s the monsoon now and while you might still be able to buy apples and grapes freely in the market, try to include seasonal fruits and vegetables in your diet as well. Here are a few monsoon fruits and vegetables that you should pick up on your next grocery trip.
Fruits Cherries: These are a monsoon specialty and you will find them in abundance. While picking up cherries, ensure that the ones that you pick are plump and fleshy because dense cherries are sweeter and juicier. Store them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and consume them within a day or two as they spoil easily.
>> Avoid peaches that have a hint of green on them as those will never ripen fully
« KNOW MORE: NEW DIET TRENDS Wondering what some of the latest trends when it comes to healthy eating are? Dev Goswami tells you Change is the only constant and when it comes to a crucial topic such as losing weight, there are a lot of changes taking place globally at a frantic pace. Every year we hear about new diets and foods that help you shed unwanted kilos. So, what’s making the news this year? We find out about the latest diet trends — good and bad.
MiraCLe berry: West Africa has
discovered a fruit known as Synsepalum dulcificum, which has been labelled as a Miracle Berry for its ability to change the flavour of something bitter or tart to sweet. The idea is that by eating it in the fruit form or as a tablet, you can simulate your sweet taste receptors and get the taste of sweet foods without having to worry about your sugar consumption.
17-day diet: The 17-day diet draws
its logic from another diet — the calorie shifting diet. The idea behind this diet is that your body uses more energy to burn foods that it is not used to. So, changing your diet plan every 17 days ensures that your body gets different foods and so, your metabolism levels are high. However, there is no
scientific evidence for the same and the diet’s claims are still to be certified. But, the other logic is that this ensures you do not get bored or lose motivation while following a diet plan.
sMartPhone aPPs: Apps that
help you lose weight by keeping track of your calorie consumption and acting as a food journal aren’t new. However, new and better apps are being developed every day that promise you much more. There are apps which give you access to healthy recipes as well as apps that help you plan a customised, healthy meal-plan. Of course, they can’t take the place of a nutritionist, but they sure do make healthy eating easier.
tongue PatChes: This is one
trend that we urge you to not follow. Tongue patch is a new diet trend that is taking Venezuela by storm. It involves stitching an abrasive patch on your tongue that is designed to make eating extremely painful. This means that you’ll have no other option but to consume only liquids, helping you lose weight. Ouch, right? That was our exact reaction!
LyChees: The monsoon is a special humidity, so refrigerate them in a season for lychee lovers as this is the time when you get the best lychees in the market. While buying lychees, don’t buy loose ones and opt for those that come in bundles with leaves and stem. The skin of a lychee is naturally tough and leathery. However, while
buying the fruit, ensure that the skin is not overly dull, dry or dark. Also, don’t buy lychees if they are cracked, leaking or smell fermented. You can store them for up to four to five days in a refrigerator, but to have them at their best, try to consume them within two days of your purchase.
PeaChes: Some of the best peaches are available during this season. Make sure that the peaches you buy are firm. They should be unblemished, with a warm and fragrant aroma. Avoid ones with a hint of green as those will never ripen fully. Pick the ones that have a rich yellow colour, especially towards the stem area. While storing peaches, make enough space between them to allow proper air circulation. Peaches need

plastic bag and eat within two days.
VegetabLes bottLe gourd: Bottle gourds (lauki) are available throughout the year, but they are actually a specialty of the monsoon. The juice of this vegetable is used in the treatment of stomach acidity, indigestion and ulcers, the cases of which are high during the monsoon because the risk of contaminated food items increases. However, don’t eat it raw as it can lead to stomach problems.
brinjaL: July to September are the months during which you’ll get the best brinjals. When buying, choose the ones with smooth, shiny skin, heavy for their size and which have no blemishes. Wrinkled, loose skin is an indication of age and the vegetable will be bitter. Smaller brinjals have fewer seeds, thinner skin, and tend to be sweeter, tenderer and less bitter. Consume them within four days.
How do you stay fit? I work out regularly, eat well and think positive. It also helps to have friends who are as health conscious as I am. What’s an ideal workout for you? Currently, my workout schedule works well for me. I do weights three days a week, cardio on two days and reserve one day for legs and functional training each. What’s your diet like? When I get up at 6am, I have a protein shake. This is followed by breakfast at 9am. I usually have muesli, oats or four egg-whites. Lunch is at 1pm and it includes chicken with salad. Dinner is the same. I occasionally eat chapattis. Is there anything you avoid eating? Sweet, oily and fatty food. What are your top three tips for a happy life? Stay fit and healthy. Always have a positive approach because if you’re happy everything else will fall into place. What’s in your workout bag right now? My track pants, shoes, wallet, protein shake and water bottle. Your current workout playlist? I’m currently hooked onto the Aashiqui 2, Raanjhanaa, D Day, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Rockstar albums.

Mostly as It’s time you included weight-training in your workout plan. Based on your answers, it seems that you’re stuck in a rut where the exercises you do are not affecting your body in terms of increasing your strength or building muscle. Normally, exercises such as push-ups and pull-ups go a long way in building muscle, but your body is so used to them that your muscles aren’t being overworked — an essential part of weight training. However, ensure that when you do start using weights, you do so under the guidance of a trainer as you could injure yourself. Mostly bs It doesn’t matter whether you’re too thin or have less muscle. You definitely don’t need to use weights, at least not right now. Your workout is still improving your strength, push-ups and pull-ups are still a challenge for you and most importantly, you are new to working out. Stay on your current plan for a month or so and if you still see no results, only then should you consider using weights.

CHECK YOUR HEART The stress test, a medical test that is used to find out how healthy your heart is, has the medical community divided. Dev Goswami finds out more about the test and its debatable necessity
Y
our heart is one of the most vital organs and keeping it in good shape is very important. This has given rise to a number of tests and treatments that are aimed to keep your heart healthy. But, the paranoia of keeping your heart healthy has also given rise to a debate about the excessiveness of treatments. And the stress test, a test aimed at finding the amount of stress your heart can handle, is one such medical facility that is caught in the debate. We find out why.
ExpErt spEak
“Stress test cannot be taken as a gold standard, but it can certainly act as a screening test to rule out heart disease in the future. People who show symptoms such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol should take this test.” — Dr. Sharat Kolke, general physician, Kohinoor Hospital
adenosine stress test: This is for patients who are physically unable to exercise. A drug that makes your heart respond like it would What is a strEss tEst? while exercising is administered and your heart is then monitored. A stress test is used to find out the amount of stress echocardiogram: This test visualises physical exertion your heart can take before the motion of your heart and can reveal a lack developing abnormal rhythm or ischemia (not of blood flow that isn’t apparent in other tests. enough blood flow to the heart muscle). It helps differentiate to improve the blood flow within the heart as the healthy parts of your heart from the unhealthy. well as developing a safe exercise program.
hoW is it donE?
should i takE it?
The actual procedure of the stress test depends on the kind of test that is undertaken, which can be any of these four: treadmill stress test: This is the most common stress test and it involves you walking on a treadmill while electrodes attached to your chest monitor how far you can walk, if you develop chest pains and if your heart is not getting enough blood.
If you read the box, you’ll know that the test has a few risks associated with it. However, studies have shown that for people who are at an intermediate risk of heart conditions (those who suffer from risk factors such as shortness of breath, chest pains, high cholesterol and family history of premature heart conditions) this test definitely does help to prevent heart attacks and uncover potentially serious conditions. Inaccurate false positive results are seen in people with a low-risk of heart conditions. It basically means that if you are hale and hearty and suffer from no symptoms pointing towards a heart condition, there’s no need for you take this test. Eventually, a doctor would be the best person to tell you whether you need to take this test or not. However, with such tests, getting a second opinion is always the best idea.
Why thE dEbatE?
Risks such as chest pains, collapsing during the test as well as heart attacks (very rare) have been associated with the test. Also, the test hasn’t been proven to be 100% accurate. In fact, there is also a chance of a false positive response (meaning: the test shows you have a problem when there’s none).
>>The stress test is just an indicator, the final verdict should always be given by a doctor
« KNOW MORE: WALKING SAFETY Contrary to popular belief, walking isn’t necessarily the safest mode of transport, says Rhea Dhanbhoora If you read the papers regularly, you know that pedestrians in the city are in no way safe from rash driving, road rage and accidents. While you may like to blame the driver, we’re not always the most courteous walkers either. You would think we’d remember the basics, but in case you’ve forgotten how to walk without putting yourself in danger, here are a few tips.
Since we don’t have many pedestrian lights in Mumbai and you can’t always wait for a red light (not that cars in the city are guaranteed to stop at one), make sure you wait till there’s a clearing. Look left and right and then cross the road. Even if it’s a one way road, look both sides before crossing.
direction as the traffic, you won’t see a speeding vehicle fast enough to move out of the way in an emergency. On the other hand, if you’re facing the traffic, you’ll know when to get out of a vehicle’s path.
together — laughing and chatting away. But, in a city like Mumbai, that’s a really bad idea. The roads are small and crowded enough without you spreading out and sauntering along. Don’t try to use the roads to make up for the lack of gardens and open spaces in the city. Sit or stand in an area with no vehicles if you want to converse, never do it while you’re walking on a busy road. The best way to walk is actually in a single file or on a pavement.
don’t amblE along: Walking with FacE thE traFFic: If you walk in the same friends translates to all of you wanting to walk
>> You might want to keep your phone inside your pocket while walking
look around: Do you remember when
you first learned how to cross the road and your mother warned you to look left and right before stepping off a pavement? That’s a golden rule.
stay aWarE: Don’t be zoned out while
walking. Just like you need to concentrate while you’re driving, the same attention is required when you’re walking. Make sure you don’t listen to music when you walk and if you must, keep the volume low enough to hear horns and warnings from vehicles passing by. Never make sudden movements or jump out in the middle of the road. Never start to cross and then stop — that confuses the driver and may lead to an accident.
don’t talk & Walk: Talking on the
phone while you drive can kill you. So, what makes you think talking and walking is safer? Just like you’re distracted when you talk and drive, you are less likely to recognise traffic dangers or passing vehicles while you’re busy on your phone. Texting while walking is a safety hazard.

conjunctiVitis Often referred to as ‘pink eye’, conjunctivitis is the swelling or infection of the tissue that lines the eyelids and coats the surface of the eye. It is characterised by redness and watery eyes. It is contagious and outbreaks are higher during the monsoon due to viral and bacterial infections. Sunglasses help as they prevent you from rubbing your eyes. It can be cured by prescribed medication. You are more susceptible to conjunctivitis if you wear contact lenses.
Dry eyes Our eyes require a constant flow of tears (water) for moisture and lubrication. An imbalance in the tear flow can cause dry eyes which leads to irritation, pain and blurring of vision. Dry eyes cannot be cured but it can be treated to make the condition better. Treatments range from artificial tear drops to punctual occlusion and even surgery.

Dear Barbara, My skin gives me a lot of trouble as it gets excessively oily when the weather is hot and very dry when it’s cooler. I try my best to use the right products to make my skin look and feel better, but I can never be sure. Can you please suggest a way that can determine if I am using the products for the correct skin type? — ritika Vij, Dadar Dear ritika, This is a common problem faced by a lot of people. A simple way to find out if the product is right for you or not is to cleanse and moisturise at night with your regular formulas. When you wake up in the morning, press a single-ply tissue to the center of your forehead. The tissue should stay on for a second or two before falling off. If it stays on
longer, your products are leaving your skin too oily. If it doesn't stick at all, your skin lacks moisture. Dear Barbara, I seem to be having a lot of unexplained bruises, especially on my arms. My wife is worried that it could be a symptom of diabetes, which runs in my family. The bruises are darkest and hurt most when I have just woken up. Does bruising have anything to do with diabetes? — sanjay motiani, Goregaon Dear sanjay, Whenever unusually large and painful bruises appear for no apparent reason, it is important to consult a doctor as there can be many reasons why they have appeared. more warning signs that you may want to pay attention to. For example, increased thirst and urination, extreme hunger, weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision and frequent infections. The connection between bruising and diabetes that your wife may be referring to is a condition called Acanthosis Nigricans, where patches of brown to black skin accumulate in the folds and creases of your body — usually in the armpits and neck because of hyper-pigmentation. Bruises could be a sign of various conditions such as effects of medication or supplements, a bleeding or clotting disorder, diabetes, liver diseases and deficiency of vitamins. One detained in Bodh Gaya blasts, CCTV footage released
MONSOON IN MELODY… Children play at the cultivation fields at a village in Dhanbad, in Bihar, while farmers seat them a plank of wood to prepare a field for paddy in Moradabad, in Uttar Pradesh, on Monday.
G
AYA/PATNA: One person was detained by the NIA on Monday in connection with the terror attack on Buddhism’s holiest shrine here even as authorities released the CCTV footage of the serial blasts at the historic Mahabodhi temple and adjoining areas. As a team of investigators from NIA, NSG and other agencies searched for clues in yesterday’s 10 serial blasts at Bodh Gaya that left two monks injured, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the state government will make a proposal to the Centre to ask CISF to take over the security of the shrine. A team of the National Security Guard (NSG), which picked up samples from the area, has sent a preliminary report to the Union Home Ministry, saying the low-intensity bombs worked like improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and were
trigerred through analog clock timers. The bombs contained a mix of ammonium nitrate and sulphur and were neatly packed in small cylinders, the report said. Bihar Director General of Police Abhyanand said a person identified as Binod Kumar Barachatti has been detained on the basis of a voter Identity card in his name which was found during search inside the temple after the explosions. He told newsmen in Patna that lab tests have so far confirmed the presence of ammonium nitrate in the crude low intensity bomb used in the blasts but there were no trace of TNT or other explosive material. Papers containing the name of the location where it had to be planted was found pasted on each bomb, he said. “The name of the location is written in English and some words in Urdu,” he added.
12 dead in Secunderabad hotel collapse H YDERABAD: At least 12 persons were killed on Monday and 18 others injured when a 50 year rpt 50 year old building housing a Irani hotel, collapsed in Secunderabad here, police said. The roof of the two-storeyed Hotel City Light and Bakery, located on R.P. Road in Secunderabad, crashed at around 6 a.m. resulting in the building collapse leaving a dozen dead. Besides, some others are still feared trapped, Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma told PTI. The deceased include hotel staff and also customers who went to have tea and snacks in there, offi-
cials said. The injured were rushed to Gandhi hospital. Policemen, officials of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), fire department and CISF personnel were involved in relief and rescue operations to clear the debris and pull out those trapped. “The rescue operations are continuing. As a precautionary measure we are taking help of experts in removing those trapped under the debris,” Sharma, who was monitoring the relief measures said. On reports that placing of a furnace (for preparation of ‘Haleem’ — a delicacy made during Ramzan season) on the building terrace may be one of the causes

behind the incident, the Hyderabad police chief said investigation will reveal the exact reasons. CISF is doing a commendable job in rescuing those trapped, he said. The Mahankali police has booked a case of negligence against the hotel management. Eye-witnesses say they saw the building come down suddenly with a loud sound coupled with cries of people. GHMC commissioner M T Krishna Babu, who was also at the site of the accident, said there were several old buildings in the area and notices have been served in this regard to their owners. The collapsed building, however did not fall under that list, he said. Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, along with ministers Danam Nagender, Geeta Reddy and Mukesh Goud, visited the collapse site and also Gandhi Hospital where the injured were admitted.
Nitish may soften stand on NCTC
N
EW DELHI: The multiple blasts in Bodhgaya, the first major terror attack at the pilgrimage spot and the rest of Bihar, may push Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to soften his stand in his opposition to set up anti-terror hub NCTC. Home Ministry officials believe that the terror attack on the Mahabodh temple in Bodhgaya may force the Chief Minister to soften his stand as he has to re-look the activities of terrorist groups in Bihar for safety of the state. “The delay in setting up of NCTC will continue to hamper the government’s anti-terror initiatives. The sooner those oppose it realise its importance, the better for the country,” an official said.

s many as 13 bombs were planted inside the Mahabodhi temple complex in Bodh Gaya of which ten had exploded injuring two monks, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said on Monday. “Today, I have the information of 10 blasts. A total of 13 bombs were placed there. I will not go into details where they were kept and all. Two persons have been injured— 50-year-old Dorji and Bala Sanga (30),” Shinde told PTI. Shinde was speaking on the sidelines of a function for inauguration of a hospital of Central Reserve Police Force in Talegaon, about 100 kilometers from Pune.

Rains hamper relief ops; special IAF aircraft commissioned D
EHRADUN: Fresh spells of rain in parts of Uttarakhand on Monday damaged several houses in Chamoli district and hampered relief operations prompting authorities to engage an IAF transport aircraft for the mammoth exercise. About eight houses in Urgam Valley of Chamoli district were damaged due to heavy rains forcing the occupants to vacate them and move to safer places, Chamoli’s District Magistrate S A Murugesan told PTI.
People living in those houses are unharmed as they have moved to safer places apprehending damage to the structures, he said. IAF’s C-130 Hercules aircraft, commissioned after choppers engaged in the operations earlier failed to fly relief material to affected areas due to inclement weather, has also not been able to serve its purpose so far. The plane returned from a sortie this morning without dropping relief packages in affected areas due to overcast skies and low visi-
bility conditions, NDMA member in charge of relief operations in the hill state, V.K. Duggal, told PTI. The aircraft is supposed to airdrop relief material in worst-hit Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Rudraprayag districts, including Kedarnath. The process of cremating bodies is being carried out in Kedarnath area amid bad weather by a team of over 70 experts and trained personnel even as they are said to be facing food shortage.

Some buying was witnessed in technology, IT and capital goods stocks, while heavy selling was seen in oil & gas, realty and auto stocks. Support (1) = 5780. Support (2) = 5749. Resistance (1) = 5838. Resistance (2) = 5865.
OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a hammer, (reflected by it small body and long lower tail - A long lower tail indicates that the Bears controlled the ball for part of the session, but lost control by the end and the Bulls made an impressive comeback). The formation of a Hammer after a major decline is a bullish reversal pattern but requires further bullish confirmations. The index has crossed below the 5 and 200 day’s moving averages in a single session. This is negative. However, the index is still above the 15 and 25 days moving averages. Further despite yesterday’s fall, the velocity parameters continue to remain positively trended. Both these indicate a positive bias. As such these are mixed signals. Order book robust: Ramky Infrastructure’s order book stands at Rs120bn (4x FY13 revenue), dominated by transportation (40%), buildings (17%), water (17%) and irrigation (14%). Order inflows during FY13 were Rs13.4bn. The company aims at an order inflow of Rs20bn in FY14. Balance sheet stretched: On the higher working capital required and investment in BOTs, debt increased from Rs9.5bn a year ago to ~Rs12bn in FY13, taking net gearing to 1.1x. Working-capital days have increased from 141 to 162. BOT projects update: Of the total ~Rs10bn required, Rs4.3bn has been invested by the company towards its BOT projects. The remaining equity would be funded through internal accruals in the next 2-3 years. The equity requirements are more back-ended. Our take: On the back of a stretched balance sheet and working capital constraints, execution has slowed. With further equity funding required for its BOT projects, the company’s balance sheet is likely to be stressed for 3-4 quarters. At the current price, the stock trades at a P/BV of 0.3x FY14/15 consensus estimates. We have a Buy rating on the stock, with a sum-of-parts target of Rs 101, based on 4x PE of the FY14e construction business (Rs63) and 0.5x P/BV for its for its investment in Road and other projects (Rs38).

pointed out that the rupee depreciation was part of a larger theme – the dollar’s rising strength globally – and hence, any local measure would not be of much help. According to Sandesh Kirkire, CEO of Kotak Mutual Fund, the eroding value of the Rupee over the past few months had increased the currency risk for the un-hedged FII investments, necessitating liquidation and delay of investments to protect value in dollar terms. “The market sentiments also got dampened by the fact that declining Rupee makes the landed cost of imports more expensive, especially with respect to the crude oil. Since this has the inflationary effect on the general economy, the market is expecting a more circumspect approach by the RBI with regard to the monetary policy action,” he said. Most of the analysts continue to believe that the rupee could decline further and may even test the 62 level against the dollar.

evenue growth for the capital goods industry “is expected at 5% YoY in Q1FY14 vs. 0.4% growth in Q4FY13,” says Religare Research. According to it “The EBITDA margin for the sector is expected to improve 50bps YoY to 10.3% off a low base (for SIEM, LT, ENGR), even as the PAT margin is likely to slip 50bps YoY to 6.8% on higher interest cost and lower other income (as customer advances dip). Order inflows remain lacklustre amid an uncertain macroeconomic environment. KKC, LT and CRG are our top picks from a 12month perspective. BHEL remains our top Sell”, says Religare It believes revenue growth will be muted. “We expect a YoY fall in revenues for TMX, SIEM, KKC, SKF and
ENGR in Q1FY14 as project execution remains muted due to a declining order book and softer off-take for domestic products business. LT’s growth, however, is expected to remain strong led by a robust order book. Further, businesses with exposure to consumer segments (BJE/HAVL) are likely to witness strong revenue growth (11%/13% YoY) in the quarter.” This is because the overall ordering environment remains sluggish. “Order inflows for the sector were muted during the quarter, barring strong order announcements from LT (Rs 173bn). Other key orders announced during the quarter were: (1) BHEL: Rs 4.5bn order for Renovation & Modernisation of a 210MW thermal unit by Maharashtra State Power Generation Corporation, (2) SIEM:
Rs 1bn order for a gas-insulated switchgear substation from Bangladesh Steels Re-Rolling Mills, (3) TMX: Rs 17bn orders for supply of CFBC boilers (in July’13), “ its says. PGCIL’s ordering remained slow in Q1FY14, dropping 48% YoY to Rs 30bn – substation/transmission line tower (TLT) orders were down 82%/41% YoY during the quarter to Rs 6.5bn/Rs 7.6bn. Transformer orders for the quarter were marginally up 7% YoY to Rs 3.6bn. Conductor and insulator orders also increased to Rs 6.3bn and Rs 1.9bn respectively. According to Religare, the key developments to watch for include decisive policy moves to resolve fuel and PPA issues in the Power sector and progress in SEB restructuring.

Coal Stocks At Thermal Power Plants Improve In June: CEA Coal stocks at thermal power stations in the country have shown an increase, mainly due to improved supplies of the fuel and lower demand for electricity. Only five plants had less than four days of coal stocks at their disposal as of June 27, according to Central Electricity Authority (CEA) data. “The overall fuel supplies have increased, a prime reason for improved coal storage at plants. Also, another reason is that the PLF or plant load factor of stations is declining due to less demand from the states,” a Power Ministry official told PTI.

HEME based concerts related to the monsoon season have become fashionable over the years. The credit for starting the trend goes to the late Kumar Gandharva who presented a three hour programme entitled Geet Varsha, way back in 1966. Our music has a close connection with nature. The best reflection of this connection is found in ragas like Malhar which is a principal monsoon raga and Bahar which is the main springtime raga. Pancham Nishad took the initiative and organised the first major concert of the monsoon season this year at the Nehru Centre. Budhaditya Mukherjee and Ulhas Kashalkar, two outstanding musicians of the present era were featured in this concert. Budhaditya is the ace sitarist of the country. His presence and his music exudes quiet dignity, authority and serenity. It is a pity that he is not heard enough in Bombay. He played the raga 'Miyan Ki Malhar'. This raga, when played with proper use of glissandos (meend) and gamak (oscillations) really blooms in all
Outstanding musicians Budhatiya Mukherjee and Ulhas Kashalkar regaling the audience. its glory. Budhaditya's 'Miyan Ki Malhar' certainly conformed to this description. The trills on the note komal gandhar, the scintillating super fast taans and particularly the descending ones really rendered the audience speechless with admiration. He also played splendid alaaps in the raga 'Des'. The sense of yearning which 'Des' conveys came across with brilliance through Budhaditya's rendition. Ojas Adhia, the young tabla player who accom-
panied him was in perfect sync with the maestro. Ulhas Kashlakar has been dominating the concert stage for over a decade. Kashalkar is reputed for the quality of his music. It has classical solidity and unsurpassed dignity about it. His voice, over the years, has become broad but it retains the sweetness which comes naturally to him. He sang the raga 'Gaud Malhar', 'Kahe Ho'. The bada khyal composed by Sadarang is known for its exqui-
site and ageless beauty. Kashalkar sang it with the requisite emotion and his elaboration was punctuated with energetic taans. The swoops timed perfectly with Suresh Talwalkar keeping the beat on the tabla. He also sang 'Balma Bahar Aayee' the traditional bandish as well as the tarans which has Persian words. Kashalkar also sang a composition in the raga 'Surdasi Malhar'. Sudhir Nayak provided superb sangat on the harmonium.

ave you ever heard blind singers and musicians rendering Hindi golden oldies? A new music show called Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se is the latest trendsetting show which has 30 blind singers and musicians. The producer of the show, Nandu Kadam says, “This is one of the most interesting shows in recent times and the popular songs of the ’50s and ’60s will be sung by these ‘different’ singers for whom their handicap is not a deterrent and their performance is as good as any normal singer. The response has been excellent and the audience is only increasing.”
that does not use the mask, hence it makes a big difference, as the expressions of the dancer can be watched, besides the typical body language. The programme commenced with traditional invocatory number in praise of the Lord of Dance -- Nataraj, This was performed with the characeristic flamboyant and distinct movements pertaining to leaps and jumps by Santosh Nair. Nair was initially trained by his father Kalamandalam Padbanabhan Nair and later by Sadanam Balakrishnan in the Kathakali style. In order to explore the Chhau style, Santosh became the disciple of Guru Janmay Joy Sai Babu and modern dance under the guidance of the veteran Narendra Sharma. Besides the modern contemporary dance numbers that had flashes of innovation with the touch of ballet, it was interesting to see the dancers performing ‘Sabar Topke’ that portrays the hunters escapade, as they venture out to catch their prey. The piece-deresistance of the evening was ‘Yodha’ which is martial dance with swords and shields. The dancers performed this number with vitality and enthusiasm creating a great impact on the audience, that included the veteran Hema Malini. Kudos to Santosh Nair and his talented team of dancers.

MAMI FILM FESTIVALS NEW LOGO
The 15th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival, the premier film festival of the country organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), will sport a new look. The icon is a contemporary and edgy interpretation of the city’s iconic monument, the Gateway of India and is a carefully crafted homage to Mumbai’s art deco era of talkies. The new identity is fluid with a dazzling array of colours, each one representing a particular category at the festival while at the same time reflecting the diverse cultural mosaic of the financial capital of India. The festival will take place from the October 17–24, 2013.

boxer, who made his Olympic debut in London last year, thus followed Suranjoy Singh (2009) and Rajkumar Sangwan (1994) into the history books as a rare Indian gold-medallist at the premier continental event. "Shiva fought an excellent bout. He applied his brain and dominated all three rounds. The decision may have been split but he was clearly the better boxer among the two," national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu told PTI from Amman. But it was disappointment for another rising star L Devendro Singh (49kg), who went down fighting to Kazakhstan's Temertas Zhussupov, the Strandja Memorial Tournament winner from Kazakhstan. Devendro, also a London Olympian, lost on a split decision of 1-2. "It was a very close bout. and even though he lost, I am Devendro fought his heart out very satisfied with his perform-
ance. To me he is shaping up to be an excellent boxer," said Sandhu. "It is a brilliant performance considering the circumstances in Indian boxing . None of my boys disappointed me. Even the ones who lost, gave fine performances, I am very happy," he added. Both these boxers are being managed by Anglian Medal-Hunt Company and Olympic Gold Quest. Mandeep also ended up on the losing side after putting up a gallant fight to settle for silver. He lost to 2010 Asian Games gold-medallist Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan. "Mandeep is very young and inexperienced but he fought very well, showed a lot of heart and produced a brilliant performance. Everybody expected his to be a one-sided bout but Mandeep matched him blow for blow," said Sandhu.
United SC’s future uncertain Nanjappa’s career not threatened
N
EW DELHI: After AIFF's development side Arrows, another major I-League outfit, United Sports Club's future has been thrown into uncertainty due to absence of sponsors. The Kolkata-based club's problems started after it lost its financially-hit sponsors Prayag as a fallout of the chit-fund scam in Bengal. "We are going through problems as far as sponsors are concerned. Prayag is no more our sponsors and we have struggling ever since," team director Nabab Bhattacharya told PTI from Kolkata. Even as the fear of the club closing down looms, Bhattacharya said they will try their level best to rope in a sponsor before the seventh edition of the I-League kicks off later this year. "There is no question of closing down. We are confident of getting a sponsor before the
league," Bhattacharya said when asked if the club would shut shop if it failed to rope in a sponsor. The club, which is home to some of the top I-League players including long-standing Nigerian striker Ranty Martins, has been on the lookout for sponsors for over two months. Former Dempo SC star Ranty has scored over 150 goals in the league. Sources close to United SC said that the club has not been able to convince the sponsors. Bhattacharya added that a few political leaders have also pledged their support to the club. On Ranty, who had in the past expressed his desire to stay on at the club, Bhattacharya said it "was difficult to say anything until and unless things are resolved."
by paralytic attack: NRAI N
EW DELHI: Indian shooter Prakash Nanjappa's tryst with the sport will not end with a lone World Cup bronze medal as the 37-year-old is "recovering well" a few days after suffering a paralytic attack in the ongoing ISSF World Cup in Granada, Spain. Nanjappa's condition is said to be improving over the last few days, according to National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) president Raninder Singh. "All his various faculties are working and he is doing well, recovering well under the care of his parents. The only thing is that he is having a bit of problems closing one of the eyes, and that should be okay with physiotherapy," Raninder said.
Asked about the shooter's future in the sport, the NRAI chief sounded optimistic. "We are very hopeful of having him of the ranges soon," he said. Nanjappa had won the bronze medal in the men's 10 metre Air Pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Changwon, Korea in March. Apparently, Nanjappa was not well while flying to Spain and his condition deteriorated on arrival. As he suffered the attack, Raninder got in touch with the Indian Embassy in Spain for assistance. Nanjappa flew back to the capital on Saturday along with fellow shooters Shreyasi Singh and Seema Tomar, before being accompanied by his father P N Panappa to his home town Bangalore.

Banjara Hills lad Jaber got off to a dream start and had Kohli under early pressure. But he frittered away the advantage as the Mumbai lad’s fortunes changed with the crucial third frame. “I should have won the first two frames but I did not capitalize on the chances that came my way,” explained a relieved Kohli. Jaber’s compatriot Kishor Maguluri also of Banjara Hills made amends when he beat Sagar Jain of Mumbai 3-0 in Group C. It was a rewarding opening day for Pune cueists as PYC Hindu Gymkhana’s Rajwardhan Joshi and Nimish Kulkarni both eked out hard-fought 3-2 wins.

India climb to 2nd spot in ICC Test rankings, SA hold on to top spot
DUBAI: India moved a rung to second spot, ahead of England, in the latest ICC Test rankings issued today, while South Africa have strengthened its position as the numero uno side after the annual update of the championship table. Despite England having won its last two Test series against India, it now finds itself below M S Dhoni's side on account of less consistent performances in other recent series, in particular against Pakistan (0-3), South Africa (0-2) and tie in the away series against eighth ranked New Zealand (0-0). However, Alastair Cook's team can reclaim the number two spot by winning the upcoming Ashes series, starting on July 10 in Trent Bridge, Nottingham. England need to win by a margin of 3-0 or better to regain the second position.
India U-19 side sail into final of Tri-nation series
DARW IN: India sailed into the final of the Under-19 Tri-nation Series after a clinical all-round display saw them post a comfortable seven-wicket win over their counterparts from Australia here. Aamir Gani (3/25) was the most impressive bowler from the Indian side while skipper Vijay Zol (64) and Akhil Herwadkar (60) were the main contributors with the bat at the Marrara Oval. The loss dealt a blow to hosts Australia's hopes of entering the finals.

ONDON: They've both played 92 Tests, they are both world-class batsmen and they both scored a hundred on Test debut, in each case away to India. But it's the differences between England captain Alastair Cook and Australia skipper Michael Clarke that promise to make their personal Ashes battle particularly fascinating when the latest clash between Test cricket's oldest rival nations starts in Nottingham on Wednesday. For while both men like to lead by example with the bat, Cook is seen as a popular leader, capable of handling 'awkward' characters such as Kevin Pietersen, but a cautious tactician whereas Clarke is regarded as imaginative in the field but has faced questions over his man-management. Aged just 28, Cook has already scored more test hundreds -- 25 -than any other England batsman. He took over as full-time captain when Andrew Strauss, Cook's old opening partner, retired after last year's home series loss to South Africa. Left-hander Cook then struck three hundreds as England achieved a rare series win in India. But during a subsequent drawn series in New Zealand, Cook's field placings seemed overly defensive when compared to those of home skipper Brendon McCullum. In the return series against New Zealand earlier this season, England won both matches for a 2-0 series victory. However, in the second Test in Leeds, with rain forecast, Cook delayed his declaration until New Zealand had been set an improbable 468 to win and then denied offFirst Test (July 10 - 14) spinner Graeme Swann some close catchers. In the end, England 'I would have pulled out with dodged the showers and won by 247 runs. "It is very easy when you 350 on the board'," Cook said afare sitting behind the rope to say, terwards. England's approach in the field under coach Andy Flower has been one of keeping control and building pressure. But former England captain David Gower, writing in the Sunday Times, said: "Those of my generation tend to feel that more can and should be done to add further pressure with more men around the bat -- at the right times -- and that too often opportunities to do so are allowed to pass. "The fact (India's MS) Dhoni, McCullum and Clarke are prepared to make those moves tells me....That even in this era captains can and will be imaginative and bold -- if they allow themselves to be," added Gower, an
Ashes-winning skipper back in 1985. Since January 1 last year, Clarke has been in superb form, with a triple hundred against India and three more double centuries, including two against South Africa, the world's leading Test side. Yet his batting and attacking captaincy could not prevent a series loss to South Africa or a 4-0 hammering away to India, where his backing for coach Mickey Arthur proved divisive. Arthur was eventually sacked just 16 days before the Ashes, following the 'homework' row that saw four players, including then vice-captain Shane Watson, dropped for not completing a written assignment.
Windies players add colour to Dhoni’s birthday party P
ORT OF SPAIN: Laid low by injury he might be, but Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's birthday celebrations turned out to be quite lively with the West Indian cricketers also joining the party here. Dhoni, who turned 32 yesterday, has stayed with the Indian team here despite being out of the ongoing ODI tri-series due to a hamstring injury. After yesterday's celebrations, India's most successful skipper took to twitter to give a glimpse of the party this morning. "Thanks everyone specially Bravo for the lovely evening and the soft cake all over my face and hair," Dhoni posted along with a picture of his face smeared with cake. "All west Indian players and friends present were like no no u don't celebrate like tht, I said its just the beginning," the Jhark-

India face familiar foes Sri Lanka in do-or-die clash
P
ORT OF SPAIN: India will have to play to their full potential when they meet Sri Lanka in their last league match here today to keep alive their hopes of making it to the final of the tri-nation ODI series. The Indians, who rediscovered their spark courtesy the crushing victory over the West Indies, will seek to keep the momentum going in the crucial game against the Lankans, who will be equally determined to secure a berth in the final. It is a must-win situation for the Indians but they may have a slight edge over Sri Lanka as the islanders would not get any rest due to the rain-forced postponement of their game against the West Indies to be completed. On the flip side, the Indians will have to wait until at least today morning to know the mathematical calculations with regards to the finals berth given that all three teams are in with a chance. The West Indies-Sri Lanka match, which was into its 20th over, had to be
postponed to the reserve day today after rain halted play. The Indians have no option but to wait for the result of this game to know exactly what they need to do to enter the final. After losing two of the three matches they have played so far, Virat Kohli's men would need to be clear about the maths during the final league clash against the familiar foes. The last time India and Sri Lanka came face to face, the islanders sailed past their neighbours with enormous ease. But the fatigue factor, which incidentally is also setting in on the clashes between the two South Asian rivals due to the sheer frequency, could prove to be Sri Lanka's undoing today. The Indians would come into match quite fresh and on a high after beating the West Indies in their previous game, a win that kept them in the hunt for a final berth. Kohli provided the spark, after twin debacles in the first leg, with an inspiring hundred that was also his first as captain.
Bopanna touches career-best fifth rank post Wimbledon in doubles charts
N
EW DELHI: Courtesy his stupendous run at the Wimbledon, Rohan Bopanna became the highest-ranked Indian in the world as he achieved career-best rank of five in the ATP doubles charts. Bopanna with French partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin reached the semifinals at the grass court Grand Slam, losing to eventual winners Mike and Bob Bryan. "It is an extremely proud moment for my team and myself, as this ranking is a true testament of the many years of hard work, focus and determination. Being for the first time, the highest ranked Indian makes this all that more special and is an added motivation to perform
better with every passing game," Bopanna said. The Indian though said it difficult to say if he would like to continue with Roger-Vasselin. "It is too early to speculate, though Eduardo and I are in conversation on continuing this partnership given the great run we have had in the two weeks at Wimbledon," he said. Following Bopanna at number six is his regular partner for 2013 season Mahesh Bhupathi, who also lost in the quarter-finals in London with Austrian partner Julian Knowle. Leander Paes (9) was also back in the top-10 courtesy his semifinal appearance with Czech partner Radek Stepanek. Left-hander Divij Sharan, who made his debut at the Grand Slams at Wimbledon via qualifying, also achieved his career-best rank of 89 after gaining three places. Divij is fourth Indian, who features in top100. His partner Purav Raja (115) also got to his best rank. In the singles, Somdev Devvarman continued to be country's number singles player at 131, followed by Saketh Myneni (131). In the women's ranking, Sania Mirza slid to world number 19 in doubles, after a loss of four positions.

Murray, Djokovic are new age warriors now
LONDON: Thanks for the memories Roger and Rafa, but it's the Novak and Andy show now. Andy Murray's Wimbledon triumph on Sunday, when he beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 in the final, was Britain's first by a male player since Fred Perry in 1936. But it also re-emphasised the new dominance at the Grand Slam level of the world's two top players, both aged 26 and born just seven days apart. Djokovic and Murray have now contested three of the last four Grand Slam finals. Meanwhile, Roger Federer, the deposed champion of Wimbledon who was knocked out in the second round this time around, will find himself at number five in the world on Monday, his lowest ranking for over a decade. Until he won his seventh Wimbledon 12 months ago, the 31-year-old had not won a major since the 2010 Australian Open, a 10-tournament gap at the majors. Rafael Nadal, like Federer a former world number one, was shocked in the first round at Wimbledon for his earliest ever exit at a major in 10 years as a professional. The 27-year-old Spaniard, who was off tour for seven months before his barnstorming return saw him capture a record eighth French Open, has not won a major away from Paris since the 2010 US Open. In all 33 of the last 34 Grand Slams have been won by Djokovic, Murray, Federer and Nadal, but seven of the last 11 have been taken by the world number one Serb and the world number two British player. This year alone, Djokovic has won his fourth Australian Open, lost a tight five-setter to Nadal in the French Open semi-finals before his runner-up spot to Murray at Wimbledon.
