Here we are now, two children and three grand children, son in law, daughter in law, relatives and ‘samdhi’s’ in our family fold. God has been very kind!,” Bachchan added. Jaya first appeared with Bachchan in the film, “Bansi Birju” in 1972 followed by BR
Ishara’s “Ek Nazar” in the same year. The duo then worked in “Zanjeer” and decided that if the film would do well they would marry. The real-life couple then went on to do films like “Abhimaan”, “Chupke Chupke” and “Sholay” together. The couple has two children, Shweta Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan. Shweta is the elder, and is married to businessman Nikhil Nanda. She has a daughter and son, while Abhishek is married to actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. They have an 18month-old daughter named Aaradhya.

MUNNABHAI X-RAY TECH FIR against former MBMC chief in recruitment scam By Suresh Golani
Y
et another scam surfaced in the corridors of the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) with the District Judiciary, directing the Bhayandar police to register an FIR against four persons, including former municipal commissioner Shivmurthi Naik, his deputy Sudhir Raut and another employee, Govind Parab, for their alleged involvement in corrupt practices to recruit an under-qualified X-Ray technician at the civic hospital. The action came after social activist, Santosh Baswant, filed a complaint with the First Class Judicial Magistrate, Thane district, seeking directions (under section 156(3) of the CrPc) for the police to register an FIR under sections420,415,417 and 34 of the IPC. In his plea, Baswant contended that the MBMC had issued advertisement on September 27, 2009 to recruit an X-Ray Technician for the municipal hospital. However, the civic chief and other accused officials, who were on the recruitment panel, illegally appointed Bhushan Raghu Dandgidas (28) as X-Ray
Technician without proper screening of documents, despite the fact that Dandgidas was not qualified for the job. When contacted, Assistant Police Inspector Pullarwar confirmed that the FIR has been registered and investigations were on. EXPOSED, DOWNSIZED There have been cases where civic employees have forged documents to bag elevated postings in the MBMC. The most recent one being Town Planning official Bhatar Jagtap, who was suspended last month. And more shocking is the case of watchman, Sachin Chavathe, who bagged the post of PRO on the virtue of fake diploma certificates. A few months ago, two assistant civic chiefs were demoted back to their earlier postings as senior clerks. There are many more officials attached to the technical department, who are under-qualified for their job, and pose a threat to the safety of locals, sources said, adding that bogus certificates from other states including Bihar and Rajasthan have been submitted by some officials to bag top posts in the corporation.

the trial run covered a distance of 7 Kms. It may be recalled that on May 1, Maharashtra Day, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had flagged off the first trial run of 3 Kms of the Metro between Versova to Azad Nagar stations. More such trial runs are in the offing before the line is commissioned later in the year. Meanwhile, sources in the Chief Ministers office dis-
closed that the inauguration of the much awaited Eastern Freeway could take place anywhere between June 6 to June 8. The Chief Minister is in New Delhi till the middle of the week and is expected to return to Mumbai on June 5. Moreover, sources added, there is no formal request from the MMRDA to the Chief Minister’s office seeking approval for the inauguration.

Kapil Sibal – poet
When we received the invitation (by SMS) to the launch of Worldwide Records ‘Betiyaan”, we were about to dismiss it as just another over-hyped music launch, featuring the usual suspects – Sushmita Sen, Ajay Devgun, Sunanda Shetty, Shilpa Shetty, Raveena Tandon etc. You know, thoroughly glamorous people whom we avoid because we are not glamorous ourselves. Then we saw that Kapil Sibal, Union law minister, was to be there, and we were sufficiently intrigued to read on and we are glad we did. Because here is a chance to meet and see in action, Kapil Sibal – poet. Just like our own Aditya Thackeray!

Ability Unlimited provides opportunities for differently-abled youth to explore the performing arts
Miracle on Wheels
Given our dismal attitude and sheer lack of response to the myriad needs of the differently abled in this country, there is no need to feel smug about the showcasing of a pretty unique performance at the NCPA this week. This Friday at the Tata Theatre, Ability Unlimited gives a performance that showcases what
this special category is capable of. Performers in wheelchairs, speech and hearing impaired, affected by paralysis, but on stage, they are inspired, their performances spectacles of pulsating light and sound effects, incorporating elements of Bharatanatyam, Sufi dancing and Chauu. According to Ranjana Dave, writing in the NCPA’s On Stage
magazine, “Dancers in wheelchairs are complemented by hearingimpaired dancers. They use their arms to thump their wheels as if they were feet, as they perform pure dance movements in Bharatnatyam. Interestingly, the hearing-impaired dancers are also trained in dancing in wheelchairs. Abroad, specially-abled performers are a fact of life. In India, they are a rarity, though dancer-choreographer Astad Deboo has incorporated them in performances successfully for the
last 15 years. He has created special works for hearing impaired dancers from both Kolkata and Chennai, taking them abroad as well to great triumph. Deboo’s own ability to spin is also legendary. And in the Ability Unlimited Group, there is Gulshan Kumar, who holds the world’s record for the maximum number of spins on a manual wheelchair in one minute! That is 65 spins in one minute, the record notched up in 2011. Still unbroken.
Don’t forget to target the ally before strongly criticising the opposition!
Art with a heart
It’s the ninth such exhibition in order to raise funds for the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) and we are delighted to be able to tell our readers that the good heart and philanthropic mind, the wide-open purse and the open hand remain the same when it comes to artists and generosity. This year no less than 105 artists are giving 105 works for sale at the fund raiser, which seeks to raise money for deserving cancer patients. They include the biggest, the best, the brightest, among them include K H Ara, F N Souza, Akbar Padamsee, Badri Narayan, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Shuvaprassana, Shipra Bhattacharyya, Prafulla Dahanukar, Subrata Gangopadhyay, Sanjay Bhattacharjya, Samir Mondal, Bharti Prajapati, Bina Aziz, Brinda Chudasama Miller, Sanatan Dinda, Atin Basak, Buwa Shete, Seema Kohli, Surya Prakash, T Vaikunthan,Yusuf Arakkal, Nayanaa Kanodia, Lalitha Lajmi, H R Das, Ramesh Gorjala, Charan Sharma and Yashwant Shirwadkar. Curator of ‘Colours of Life’ for the CPAA, Piali Syam, says that the task of putting together the art collection for the year has been most enjoyable “as there is nothing more rejuvenating than seeing the works of various artists from across the country as they arrive. The collection has a large spectrum of works, styles, media and price range. It gives every art lover an opportunity to own a piece of work without having to stretch their budget. Also, it gives a unique opportunity to the art collectors to select from different genres of artists and make their collection more dynamic.”
H R Das’s aptly titled Play – 1 and Suhas Bahulkar’s Myth and Reality. Both acrylic on canvas with a touch of gold leaf for the latter.
As you can see from the two pictures we have chosen to highlight, the art here will cover everything from folk to abstract, figurative to landscape, offering a unique opportunity for art collectors to obtain valuable additions to their portfolios. Over the years, artists have become an integral part of CPAA and without their contribution the organisation’s endeavour to support cancer patients in a
holistic manner would remain unfulfilled. That is what has made this one of the most prestigious events of the year. So, we will see you at The Viewing Room, Elysium Mansion, 4th Floor, Walton Road, above Bata Showroom, Colaba Causeway, from June 10 to 22 between 11.00 am and 7.00 pm. Who knows, this year we may finally start our art collection!

Initiative aims at minimizing inconvenience to pedestrians and to manage vehicular traffic during rains
By Prashant Hamine
T
he Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set up a 24x7 control room for the monsoon season ahead. It will be managed by five MMRDA nodal officers and 41 officials in three shifts. The control room has been set up with a view to minimize inconvenience to vehicular and pedestrian traffic at various project sites of the MMRDA in its jurisdiction.
In a statement issued here yesterday, MMRDA additional metropolitan commissioner Ashwini Bhide stated that the contractors have been instructed to stringently follow norms as far as barricading, reinstatement of damaged road works, and clearing and disposal of muck on the roads. The contractors have been asked to maintain dewatering pumps of adequate capacity where there is no connectivity to storm water drains and also at the known water logging spots.
MMRDA joint project director, Dilip Kawathkar, stated that the public would be able to seek help from the control room on aspects like uprooting of trees, water logging, accidents, traffic snarls, and potholes. The control room will work in tandem with Railways, BMC, Traffic Police, BEST, Fire Brigade and other agencies. Service from the control room established since June 1 is available on Helpline Numbers – 26591241 / 26594176 and 8080705051.
Over 700 MSF trainees await posting By Zuber Ansari
T
he Maharashtra Security Force (MSF), which came into existence in April 2010 after the 26/11 attack, was established to create a force which could tackle any kind of emergency and provide better safety to various vital installations in the city. Members of various Guard Boards, Home Guards, ex-servicemen and retired personnel from para-military forces, police and members of the public, were invited to take MSF training through advertisements and around 1,285 persons undertook training by paying Rs.15,000 each. However, till date, only 400 to 500 people have been given jobs while 700 still remain on the waiting list, despite having completed their training almost six months ago. All the 1,285 trainees underwent training at different centers located in Belgaum, Panvel, Virar and the CRPF camp in Goregaon.
IN A LIMBO: Over 700 MSF trainees are still awaiting their postings. On being queried about the situation, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) cum General Manager of MSF, Gulabsingh Chavan, said, “Surely everyone will get a job. We are trying our best to place them in various establishments, but the agreement process and some terms and conditions set by the companies are affecting the posting process.” “We have approached many private companies including the Metro and Mono rail department to employ MSF staff, but are facing problems for sanction of the proposal,” Chavan added.
The idea of raising a dedicated force for security was under consideration of the state government for a long time. The force was to be raised under the Maharashtra State Security Corporation as a state-level counterpart of the CISF and was the result of the joint initiative by the Union and the State Government. It was mandated to cater to the security needs of government offices, corporations, vital installations, public sector undertakings (PSUs), local bodies, banks, financial, religious and educational institutions amongst others. Does NMMC’s list of dangerous buildings include structures that don’t exist any more?
SHEER CARELESSNESS: The NMMC’s list of dangerous buildings includes several nonextant structures.
By Amit Srivastav
T
he carelessness with which the staff of the anti-encroachment department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) maintains its records can be gauged from the lapse where they have included the old structure of an Urdu medium school in Turbhe on their list of dangerous buildings in spite of the fact that the structure was torn down for redevelopment about five months ago. The construction of a new building there is already underway. Every year before the monsoon, the anti-encroachment department of the NMMC comes out with a list of dangerous buildings in the city, but the list has hardly changed over the years. Last year, there were 70 buildings declared as dangerous, while this year they have a list of 72 build-
ings. Incidentally, the 70 buildings from last year feature again in this year’s list, to which they have just added just two more buildings. The new list has been published in newspapers. Citizens are complaining that the NMMC administration is preparing the list without conducting a survey of all the buildings in every ward. The Urdu school which has erroneously figured in the list was run by the Al Hasnat Education and Welfare Society at plot number 199 at sector 21 in Turbhe and was demolished some time ago. At present, the construction of a new school building is on for which, ironically, in the month of March 2012, Navi Mumbai Mayor Sagar Naik had, in fact, conducted a bhoomi pujan. When contacted, R K Mathpati, DMC, anti-encroachment department of
NMMC, says, “This is a blunder by the staff and will be corrected soon.” According to Turbhe ward officer, Bharat Dhanade, the survey was conducted during May and his department was not involved in it. “I am not aware about the goof up since I was not part of the survey,” he said. amit.srivastav@afternoondc.in

Marriages mar Yavatmal by-poll By Prashant Hamine
A
spate of marriages, 237 of them to be precise, on one single day appears to have caused one of the lowest voter turnouts in any assembly by-election in the state. The voting percentage in the June 2 by-elections for the Yavatmal assembly constituency yesterday was officially pegged at 36.57 per cent. The low voter turnout has meant that the outcome could well swing in favour of the Congress nominee Nandini Nilesh Parwekar, who is fighting to retain the seat
Moreover, the local Yavatmal district administration confirmed to the ADC about 237 marriages happening in the constituency. Sources argued that whichever political party managed to draw their committed voters to the polling booth would stand a better chance of winning when the votes are counted on June 5. There are ten candidates in the fray, of which there are five independents and three candidates from state level recognised political parties. However, it is a direct contest between Parwekar and the BJP’s Madan Yerawar.
won by her late husband and sitting MLA Nilesh Parwekar in the 2009 elections. According to Election Commission of India (ECI) sources, the voting percentage in the first four hours was as low as four per cent. As per ECI records, there are a total of 3,21,625 voters, comprising of 1,66,232 male, 1,55,239 female and 154 service voters. However, on June 2, only 67,976 male and 49,628 female voters cast their ballot. Which meant that 98,256 male and 1,05,611 female voters did not step across to cast their ballot at all.

On Sunday, Sanjay Kothurwad, father of the deceased approached Titwala police saying that that her daughter was found murdered in her home and accordingly a case of murder was registered by the police. ago, he married Komal, a class 12th student who is just 3 years elder than his eldest daughter. He was living with Komal in a room just 100 meters away from his bungalow. not known whether there was any dispute or problems in the family due to Patil’s marriage with Komal. Dilip Godbole, PI of Titwala police station said, "As of now we have called all the people connected in the case and our investigation is still on in the case. n anonymous caller informed the East region control room about an alleged ‘rave’ party going on in the bungalow of a retired deputy commissioner of police. However, when the police reached the spot, they found a bunch of teenagers celebrating a birthday party. At 3.30 am, on Monday, Radheshyam Agarwal, senior PI of Shivaji Nagar police who is holding additional charge of Chunabhatti police station, got a call on his wireless about a group of teenagers partying in Bungalow No.119-A in Lal Dongar at Sindhi Society. On reaching the spot, the Chunabhatti police beat marshal found that the name plate displayed in front of the bungalow was of Vasant S Kamble, who was deputy commissioner of police (DCP) in CID three years ago, and is now retired. The beat marshal also found four boys and five girls,

all between the age group of 16-18 years, partying without any adult supervision. “We detained the teenagers and got them to the police station,” said Agarwal. On making further enquires, the police found that the bungalow was owned by one Nikesh Patil who is in Jaipur at present. “The teenagers told us that they were friends who met through a social networking website and were celebrating the birthday of one of the girls,” said Agarwal. After making a dairy entry, the police officers called up the parents of the teenagers and handed them over to them. The police officers said that they have detained two 16year-old boys for enquiries and are waiting for Nikesh Patil to return from Jaipur so that he could be questioned about how the bungalow was rented out to minors and a party was allowed without any supervision.
he deputy regional transport office (RTO), Vashi, has collected Rs.23.70 lakh as penalty from vehicles whose fitness certificate have already expired and have not been renewed on time. Both, commercial and non-commercial vehicles were found to be in violation of the guidelines. Up to April 15, the Deputy RTO, Vashi caught 1,597 vehicles that did not have renewed fitness certificates which, the RTO stated, must be organized well in advance of the date of expiry. These fitness certificates can be renewed up to a month before the deadline. However, in the absence of stringent rules, vehicle owners don’t bother much about the deadline. Assistant RTO, S.M.Cha-
van, said, “As per the manual process of data collection, we have found 1,597 vehicles whose fitness certificates had expired. They have been fined Rs.100 per day, irrespective of the vehicle type, from the date their fitness certificates had expired.” Earlier, the state government had issued a circular stipulating a penalty of Rs.1,000 for every vehicle, whether commercial or noncommercial, from April 15, 2013. Chavan added, “As per section 56 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, a fitness certificate authenticates whether a vehicle is fit to ply and it is mandatory for every vehicle. In case of commercial vehicles, which need permits to ferry passengers, a fitness renewal is necessary every year.” amit.srivastav@afternoondc.in

n a major victory of sorts for the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has won its case against the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) order that allowed captive power generating units in the state to bank their produced power and withdraw it at their convenience. Sources in Mahavitaran, while speaking to ADC yesterday, disclosed that the Appellate Tribunal on Electricity (APTEL) had set aside the MERC order to this effect arguing that it had no jurisdiction to issue orders on an issue that was not under its purview. Sources stated that the captive power producing units especially the nonconventional sources like wind and solar energy bank their power in the grid during monsoons when demand is low and withdraw the same from MSEDCL
when it faces peak demand during summer months. The captive power generators off-loaded or banked their power in the grid when the demand was less and withdrew it at cheaper rates as they were not being charged any temporary surcharge. High end consumers like Multiplexes and Malls have now begun to take power from the captive power generating units which is at a cheaper rate rather than buy power from Mahavitaran which sells power at Rs.3.8 per unit. Sources added that moreover the captive power units do not supply power to Mahavitaran as and when it requires in a specified time slot. Due to the MERC order which forced Mahavitaran to allow open access to captive power generators to draw power when they required the state utility has so far suffered Rs.1,500 crore loss this financial year.

CM claims that state has constructed dams to aid drought-affected areas
M
aharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan today said 1,497 check dams have been constructed in the state’s drought-hit talukas which will considerably improve the water storage capacity during monsoons. The check dams, to be inaugurated on June 9, had been constructed at the cost of Rs 150 crore, Chavan told reporters after a kharif crop review meeting here. “Desilting of dry water reservoirs was done on a massive scale with people’s participation,” he said. “In four districts of western Maharashtra, the check dams will result in water storage of additional 8.5 tmc,” he said. Desilting work has been done on a massive scale through people’s participation as a result of which the storage capacity of water reservoirs is expected to increase, Chavan said. Farm ponds have been constructed and the catchment areas have been widened, he said. In 2013-14, considering the prospects of a good monsoon, the agriculture growth rate is expected to be at 10 per cent, the Chief Minister said. “To achieve the target, all district guardian ministers Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Ponder awhile...
“Corruption is like a ball of snow, once it’s set a rolling it must increase” — Charles Caleb Colton
No shaming these names t was in February that the Shiv Sena run Iopposition BMC’s Standing Committee, in the face of from some of its members and in spite of the media highlighting the possibility, ran rough-shod over protests to pass road resurfacing contracts worth Rs 621 crore in ten minutes, setting a record for the height of brazenness. A BJP corporator had pointed out that the proposal should be held back because the roads department had not even conducted a survey of the underground facilities of the roads to be so resurfaced. The contracts were in the form of four bulk tenders and this was the second time they had been thrown open. The first time saw so many complex requirements that not a single major firm applied and those that did, gave ridiculously low bids that could not be taken seriously. This time, however, quotations were 5.4% above and only 14% below the reserve price for asphalt and cement concrete (CC) roads respectively and a total of five companies have benefited, most of them in joint ventures with each other. The thing is, when it comes to large contracts, the whole concept of name and shame is non-existent in the BMC, especially when it comes to the Standing Committee where even dissenting voices soon fall silent for one reason or other. And this attitude seems to be catching, like viral flue or malaria. What else can explain the insouciance with which additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta explains the reason why even the paltry fine of Rs 1.8 crore levied on defaulting contractors last monsoon, for not carrying out repairs of potholes within the stipulated 48 hours, was not collected. “The contractors are not yet fined, but the charges will be deducted while making payments”, he is reported to have said. Are these payments to do with this year’s projected repairs during the monsoon, is what we would like to know! Last year, civic engineers were also to be fined, and accordingly, charges of Rs 1.25 crore were levied on 12 engineers at the rate of Rs 1000 per hour for every hour after the 48 hours deadline. That means collectively the engineers had let things lie for 12,500 hours or a little over 52 days, or, in other words, they cocked a snook at the authorities, being completely certain that no-one would ever make them pay. And of these civic engineers, the esteemed Mr Gupta has (again reportedly) said, “We decided not to penalize road engineers as we want to encourage them to do better”. Yeah, right!

y liberal friends tell me to understand the Naxalites, not to condemn them. I wish I could follow their advice. But how do I reconcile the difference between the Naxalites, who killed this week some 25 Congress leaders at Chhattisgarh, and the two Nigerians who beheaded a British soldier a few days ago at London in public. For me, both are terrorists, fundamentalists, the first from the left and the other from the right. And does the ideology mean anything when the brutalities of one are no different than those of the other? Probably, it happens when ideologies lose their content and purpose. The followers do not know the way as happened at Chhattisgarh, the Naxalite Bastar belt. But what right do they have to call themselves pro-people, the protector of the oppressed when they kill the innocent in the same way as any criminal does. What I have not understood, after following the Naxalites’ activities for several decades, is the point they are trying to make. True, they do not have faith in democracy, although they cry hoarse in its name. But when they kill at will, they convey the mentality of dictatorship and do not in any way help the egalitarian thesis they expound. Their massacres and acts of oppression suggest only terrorism. A set of committed people have come together and want to dictate the nation’s fate according to their belief. They do not care for the people’s wishes and have taken upon themselves the task of leading the nation using the gun. The ballot box has no meaning in their life. Whether some families at Chhattisgarh were dictatorial in their dealings or whether tribals were killed by the non-tribals are important considerations to reach the conclusion that they contributed to the deterioration of the atmosphere. But the point at issue is to find a solution to the wrongs committed. Violence cannot find it. A democratic way is far better and more lasting.
Ideologically archaic It is strange that some people still believe in the archaic philosophy of violence. The world is moving towards conciliation and is trying to rule out the use of weapons altogether. The Naxalites, whatever their commitments to a welfare state, have first to win

people to their point of view. They cannot shoot their way through the opposition. The defence which they have offered for their carnage does not in any way mitigate their crime. The Naxalites will continue to proliferate, when disparities are blatant and the state oppression unrelenting. But violence cannot act as magic wand. It aggravates the problem as has taken place over the years. The menace has to be eliminated. All political parties and the right thinking people have to come together to end violence as a method to rectify the wrongs. Prime Minister Manmohan
any manner. It is comical that the two central ministers wanted to resign when they heard about their dismissal. But Sonia Gandhi wanted the message to spread that the party would not compromise on corruption and would even go to the extent of sacking its ministers. And she did. Both ministers were reportedly close to the Prime Minister who is said to have assured them that he would let them quit if the alternative was dismissal. Apparently, the Prime Minister who is known for his personal integrity, failed to prevail upon Sonia Gandhi. She was right in her thinking that the dismissals gave a sterner message than the resignations would have.
No fallout shelters here And there is no doubt that it is having a chilling effect on the party. There is the realization that whatever have been the acts of omission or commission in the past, the party has generally turned a new leaf and would not tolerate any more of the scams which have been tumbling out of government’s cupboard at regular intervals. In fact, many Congressmen, who are out of office, are now putting pressure on Sonia Kuldip Nayar Gandhi to “clean up” the stables in the states. IN one of the worst moments in Indian cricket history, the emergency meeting of BCCI dealt a huge blow to the game of cricket, when members were called to decide on the fate of its president, N Srinivasan, in the wake of spot-fixing/betting investigation involving his son-in-law Gurunath Maiyappan. Indian cricket is run by cosy clique of administrators who have little regard for the game and its image, and treat their personal posts as fiefs. The resignation of two BCCI board members Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke, and that of IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla, did little to make Srinivasan budge from his indefensible stance. Following is refusal to resign, an interim arrangement was agreed upon whereby Srinivasan will temporarily ‘step aside’ until the BCCI probe into his son-in-law’s dubious dealing submits its report. In the mean time, ex-tainted president Jagmohan Dalmiya, supported by Srinivasan, will take over the day to day affairs of the board, leaving room for suspicion that the latter can pull strings from behind. It is high time the BCCI be handed over to former cricket players and a professional full-time administration. In this matter the government should not sit idle while the cricket fans are sold a lemon. It must bring the BCCI under RTI Act and amend the law, as cricket has become the private affair of selfish persons who have brought shame to the country. —Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

This stubbornness is no virtue
INDIANS here and abroad who love to see cricket played honestly and fairly in the truest standards of sportsmanship must have been shocked to learn that in the BCCI emergency meeting convened on Sunday at Chennai, Srinivasan continued to have his way and called the shots by stepping aside but not resigning as expected. The arrangement to have Jagmohan Dalmiya as interim president is prima facie violative of the constitution of BCCI as there is no provision permitting two Presidents to head the Board. Whether the emergency meeting was properly convened by giving all members of the Governing Council of BCCI notice of the meeting remains to be seen. In the present scenario, Srinivasan will continue to have his way till September and the probe of spot fixing match fixing will remain a farce and lose credibility, as it can never be reSTUBBORN SRINIVASAN: BCCI President N Srinivasan applauding MS Dhoni, who garded as free and fair, because it is in the authorities’ focus for his 'special' ties to Srinivasan. can be influenced by Srinivasan spot fixing and match fixing in IPL WITH important games ahead, MS and his ilk in the BCCI in a subtle 2013.It appears that the gameplan Dhoni must remember he is also and obvert manner, no matter and modus operandi was to keep what Srinivasan may assert as to the Team India captain – a position Mr Sharad Pawar and Mr remaining away from the probe. that he has enjoyed despite imShashank Manohar out so that Who is going to keep a check on mense criticism regarding his perhim? Evening colleges will help! STUDENTS passing HSC far outnumber the seats available in degree colleges and it is a pity that many students will not be able to secure admission for pursuing their degree courses. The government should consider education as an investment and see to it that students be accommodated in one way or the other to complete their degree courses. It should consider an option to start evening lectures in state funded colleges so that all students can be accommodated and every student is assured of a seat to pursue studies and get a degree. Also, one finds that in many top colleges, where the elite kids study, students go to coaching classes and don’t attend regular lectures, which means that more students can be given admission there than the number of seats available, and such an adjustment can solve the admission woes which every state is facing at the moment. —S.N. the best interests of Indian cricket as a whole. But it has rarely been the case in India as there is a constant tug of war between state associations and various zones. On the other hand, as captain, Dhoni knows that he not only has the backing of Srinivasan, but also depends on him in many ways. If Dhoni believes a certain player should be selected but other selectors disagree, will he go over the selectors’ decision to Srinivasan? If the player in question also plays for Chennai Super Kings, will that affect Srinivasan’s thinking? And what do other Indian players feel about the boardroom calculations? There is clearly nothing wrong with the growing friendship between the BCCI president and the Indian skipper, but their opinion should not be influenced by the common business ties they share. he interrogations of the accused, especially Vindu Singh and bookie Ashwin Agarwal alias Tinku Delhi, arrested in the betting racket of IPL season 6 revealed few fruitful information to the police. IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO’s name was cropped up during the interrogation, said police.
According to the police, Vindu was in touch with Vinky and sources said that the former was trying to get some information about the plans of the KKR team. However, the investigators claims that prima facie it seems that the CEO was not at all involved either with Vindu’s illegal acts of betting syndicate or with any bookie, informed the police. Commenting on the sudden ap-
pearance of Vinky’s name, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said, “Vindu was in touch with almost all the big shots or the celebrity people concerned with the IPL season 6. Vindu’s relation with few people like Vinky was quite formal and hitherto the probe suggests that in no way the latter was involved with Vindu’s acts.” Tinku’s interrogation revealed
that the latter had visited Dubai thrice and had attended the meeting with few other bookies, who are still wanted. Also, Tinku had met Pakistan-based bookies namely Dr Javed Chotani and a person named Salman. Tinku, apart from the arrested bookie Ramesh Vyas, was in direct touch with the bookies in Pakistan. The police have gathered enough
evidence against the people arrested in IPL 6 to successfully secure the conviction under relevant section of the Bombay Police Act and IPC. Meanwhile, the city police have arrested Pune-based bookie Kishore Lalchand Badlani alias Kesu Pune at Mumbai airport. While the State School Certificate (SSC) board exam held in April, and the board examiners have nearly completed the assessment of the answer-sheets, what has come to light is that a large number of students have pleaded with the examiners through emotional notes written by the students requesting the examiners to pass them in the exams. One said, “Please pass me, I was sick last night.” “I have done well in all other subjects but I am weak in this one.” “My mother was sick a night before the exams.” etc, etc. Unfortunately, according to the rules and regulations
of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), if an answer or any statement in the answer-book is suspicious or can reveal the identity of the candidate, that particular answer-sheet is not to be corrected by the examiner. Talking to the ADC, an examiner, on condition of anonymity, said “While correcting the papers, I came across a few answer-sheets which carried emotional messages requesting the examiner to pass the candidate. It is actually a shocking that students write such requests instead of writing answers. By making such
requests students don’t only lose marks but can also lose a year for the same.” This year, around 6 lakh students from across the state appeared for the SSC exams from around 60 centers and 30 sub-centers. The ADC spoke to Laxmikanth Pandey, Chairman, MSBSHSE, Mumbai division, who said, “There are cases for such messages which have been reported by the examiners. As per rules, these papers will not be corrected. The state board will institute an inquiry and after verifying the messages and notes, the inquiry committee will take its decision on the issue.”

loose vegetables instead of the packaged and plastic wrapped ones. Apply the same principle to the masalas that you buy. Buying from small retail shops also helps as these vegetables, condiments and masalas can be bought with out the packaging. Use a cloth bag when you go shopping.
unplug: Unplug or switch off all electrical appliances when they are not in use. Most gadgets have a standby mode that draw energy even when they’re not in use. Cell phone chargers, laptops, televisions, stereos — there’s a whole list of items that should be unplugged or turned off completely when not in use.
say no To boTTled waTer: Bottled water has a massive carbon footprint as it is bottled in one location in plastic bottles and then transported elsewhere. Also, while some bottles are recycled, most are not and this increases your carbon footprint. Buy a reusable water bottle and when you go to restaurants,
use cold waTer: We don’t mean when you shower. If you like to shower with warm water, continue to do so. But, while doing the dishes or washing clothes, opt for cold water. Heating water consumes a lot of energy.
>> Recycling and reusing, carpooling, using environment friendly bags and reducing your electricity usage are some of the things you can do to keep the environment safe and from further harm
either carry your own bottle (most restaurants allow that) or opt for regular/tap water. The former would be the safest option for your health.
energy proof home: We are not talking about buying fancy energy saving gadgets, but adopting simple methods. When your air conditioner is on, make sure that your windows and doors are properly shut. This decreases the electricity consumption by a significant amount. Many air conditioners now have a smart saving option where the minimum temperature can go down to only 24°C. The higher the temperature you set, the less energy your air conditioner will consume. If you have shut your doors and windows properly, then 24°C (if the area isn’t too very big) is good enough. Change incandescent bulbs to florescent light bulbs. They use about 75% less energy. They might be comparatively more expensive than incandescent bulbs, but the difference in your electricity bill will make up for that. Needless to say, use lights, fans and
use public TransporT: We don’t think we need to explain this point. More vehicles on the road means more pollution. So, start using public transport as often as you can. This is one of the most important steps you can take to protect the environment.
The golden rs: We all know about it, but
air conditioners only when you need them.
window shopping: Ensure that when you go shopping, you buy things after thorough contemplation and research. Remember that every item in a store, however
hardly do we do anything towards it. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Sometimes we completely lose track of how much we are buying. Reduce your purchases. Reuse things by fixing them if it can be done and not by buying new every time. When you no longer need a plastic bottle or newspapers, send them for recycling. Don’t know where to call? Dial one of the numbers listed by us below on the right.

CLARISSA Pinkola Estes said that ‘’a healthy woman is much like a wolf: robust, chock-full, a strong life force, life-giving, territorially aware, inventive, loyal and loving. Living life as a woman comes with plenty of perks such as great clothes and a fantastic sense of intuition. However, being a woman means that there are a number of specific health issues which cannot be neglected issues. Women and men share many of same diseases, but have very different experiences of them. Women also tend to suffer from certian diseases at a higher rate than men. These diseases include osteoarthritis, obesity, depression, thyroid issues and others. Problems related to menstruation, fertility, pragancy, breast and ovarian cancer are unique. The WHO and other organizations have recognized some of the major health threats to women and these include heart diseases, stroke, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimar’s, dementia,
Visit your physician after the age of 35 years for ECG and blood lipid profile. Futher visits should be scheduled based on the doctor’s advice, more frequently if you have a family history of heart diseases and related ailments. About alcohol consumption, “one drink is defined as 12 ounce bottle of beer, a 5 ounce glass of wine or 1.5 ounce. Alcohol should be strictly avoided if pregant or planning to get pregant. Smoking or consumption of tobacco products should be completely avoided. Tobacco has been implicated in a number of cancers like breat, cervical, lung, skin. colorectal, mouth, tongue and throar cancers. Women tend to ignore their own health issues and “tough it out because they have someone else’s need to consider first;their family and child. They need to take care of themselves first and foremost. Michelle Obama herself said that “women in particular need to keep an eye on their physical and mental health, because if we ‘re scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don’t have a lot of time to take care of ourselves. We need to do a better job pf putting ourselves higher on our own “to do “ list. As a modern soceity it is important for us ti give top priority to women’s health. After all, a healthy woman leads to a healthy family, leads to a healthy society, leads to a healthy nation.
DIVYAJYOTI EYE HOSPITAL
A hi- tech eye centre with state of the rt technology has been offering comprehensive eye speciality services since the year 2001. Dr. S.K. Bulchandani is a practising ophthalmologist with special interests in cataract with multifocal lenses, squint, Glqcoma & Lasers. He excels in the field of Laser eye Vision correction (Lasik) ofr which he has performed thousands of corrective eye surgeries in his career. LASIK is as revolutionary eye treatment the highlight of which is that by a safe & short procedure (just 10 minutes) one can ger rid of spectacles or contact lenses. This treatment is carried out with the help of a hi-tech computer controlled Excimer laser which is preprogrammed to remodel the shape of the cornea with a great degree of precision & help in correcting refractive errors. FAQ’S: 1) How is the number removed in LASIK? The cornea of the is made up of layers. In LASIK,a very thin flap of the 1st & 2nd layer of the cornea is made by a special instrument called as microkeratome. The flap is hinged at one end of the cornea.Excimer laser is than applied to the 3rd layer of the cornea to reshape it & then the flap sticks by itself. 2) Who can undergo this treatment? Anyone who wear spectacles or contact lenses can undergo this treatment but this treatment is usually recommended after 18years of the age when the eyeball stops growing.Even after this age refractive error should be stable over a period of one year. Situations where LASIK is not reccommended:

3) How long is the treatment? Is it painful? Is it safe? The entire process takes about 10-15 minutes of which the laser treatment itself takes only few second. The treatment is not painful as the cornea is made numb with eyedrops. No injections are given . Only there might be a slight discomfort during & after the procedure. The treatment within half an hour. 4) What are the advantages of LASIK campared to other refractive procedures? a) Very Little pain & discomfort post -operatively in LASIK b) Postoperative vision is restored with hours to a few days in LASIK c) Greater predictibility of corrections . d) Less follow up visits e) preservation of all corneal layers. 5) Can both eyes treatment be done on the same day? LASIK can bedone on both eyes on the same day one after another & it is in fact advisable to do so as the visual recovery is faster & there is no post -operative double vision .
6) What are the results of refractive surgeries. The reliability of LASIK is very good in mild to moderate levels of refrative errors but with very high degrees of refractive errors ( number above-10), the variability is more & some people may still need glasses though of much lesser power. The results are excellent in myopia (minus numbers ) as compared to hypermetropia (plus numbers) LASIK technique can correct: a) Myopia from -1 to -15D b) Hypermetropia from +1 to +6D c) Astigmatisms Cylindrical numbers from 1 to 6D 7) Is there a chance of the number coming back ? The healing process takes around 4-6 weeks during which the number may fluctuate slightly . After this peroid, there is very little chance of getting the number back . 8) What is the care to be taken after LASIK treatment? Usually the patient can get back to work in 2-3 days after the treatment without any problem . However the following care should be taken after LASIK; After the treatment on that day, take rest &sleep as much as possible as it helps in recovering faster. Rubbing of the eyes & splasing water directly in the eyes should be avoided for 2-3 months. Swimming should be avoided for 3months.Likewise for steam, sauna & Jacuzzis.Head bath is allowed after 2 days but while bathing care should be taken so that the water does not go in to the eyes. Avoid dusty & dirty envionment for one week. In bright sunlight one may need to wear sunglasses for 23 weeks. Post treatment eye drops have to be instilled diligently as adviced by your surgeon to aid quick recovery.

accidents, lower respiratory diseases and pregnancy events. All women are encouraged to follow a healthy eating plan, get plenty of rest, ane exercise regularly. They should have regular screenings for cervical, breast and ovarian cancer. Early detection is the best weapon in fighting these diseases. Some basic guiding principles would include: Pap smear and pelvic exam: A woman should get one as soon as she becomes sexually active. She should have one annually for next three years and then can skip a year inbetween provided those prior results were all normal. Skin cancer screening: Annually after the age of 50 or sooner if you notice discolored moles, beauty marks or other abnormalities. Thyroid Hormone test: Every 5 years beginning at the age 35.Sooner and more often if you have symptoms of a thyroid condition or a family history of it. Bone mineral density test: At the onset of menopause or the age of 65 years. This test will be repeated at your doctor’s discretion. Blood sugar testing Breast examination including mammography annully after the age of 40 years Though there is no specific screening for ovarian cancer, an ultrsonography and blood tests advisable as a part of a routine health check which should be done once in 12-14 months.

Even if you know what the basic dental treatments are, chances are that you didn’t get all the answers in this quiz right. Don’t worry though, we’ve got the solution with this small guide to almost every procedure you may have to undergo at a visit to the dentist.

StrenGthen your core One of the biggest reasons for slouching is lack of core strength. If you increase your core muscles, you strengthen your back as well as your endurance, which will help you stand taller.
Set an aLarm Do you slouch a lot at work? If so, you probably need to set an alarm to remind you to sit up straight. Set one on vibrate (to avoid embarrassment!) and remember not to ignore or silence it without straightening up first.

root canaLS: Don’t cringe, we know
root canals used to be really painful, but they’re not as bad anymore. Also known as endodontics, this tackles infection at the root of your tooth, where the blood and nerve supply is. Don’t delay a root canal because your tooth may have to be removed completely if it’s not done in time.

moStLy as You need to change your workout before your lack of enthusiasm becomes a permanent fixture. You’re showing all the signs of being fed up of your routine — so switch it up! Make sure you choose a workout that you enjoy doing. It could be swimming, dancing or playing a sport — find one that works for you and take a friend along to stay motivated. Also, changing your workout can help you see results quicker. Additionally, make sure you keep updating your playlist because there’s nothing that makes a workout more bearable than your favourite tracks.
7
Lift correctLy If you bend badly, your back will hurt even more and it’s definitely something that contributes to slouching in the long run. When you’re lifting objects, stand in front of the object and squat from your knees; don’t bend with your back.

Look up One of the easiest ways to stop hunching is to look up while you’re walking. We know it’s easier to look down to avoid tripping, but it makes you hunch a lot more. Look up and concentrate less on your walking and you’ll find that you’re walking straighter.
Support your SittinG There is nothing that will contribute more to slouching than a bad chair. Make sure you sit in a high backed chair that provides solid support. Place a pillow or towel against your lower back if there’s not enough support. Sit at the back of your chair, so that there are less chances of you slouching.

The fixed alternative (if you don’t want to keep taking them out and putting them in) are implants, but these are extremely expensive.
WhiteninG, ScaLinG & poLiShinG: Whitening will involve
bleaching your teeth in order to lighten the colour of discoloured teeth. They’re purely cosmetic. Scaling and polishing are when your teeth are actually cleaned, not just lightened in colour. Tartar is removed with this treatment.

« KNOW MORE: ADIDAS’ NITROCHARGE
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 2013
If you’ve been struck by a nasty bout of diarrhea, sip on some apple cider vinegar (ACV) which has been diluted in a little water. If a bacterial infection is at the root of your diarrhea, apple cider vinegar could help contain the problem, thanks to its antibiotic properties. If you find it too tart, mix a few spoons of vinegar with a little apple juice.
Clears a stuffy nose If you’ve got a stubborn cold that just seems to be getting worse, then it’s a task for ACV! Mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink it immediately. This also works if you have a sinus problem.
for a sore throat With the constant changing temperatures in Mumbai, it’s but natural for your body to be more susceptible to germs. So, as soon as you feel the prickle of a sore throat coming along, drink a little ACV as germs can’t survive the acidic environment the vinegar creates.
too tired? In a city like Mumbai, we know that playing sport is quite a luxury. Yet, the few playgrounds that we have are always full of enthusiasts, both young and old. And if you love playing football, whether it’s for fitness or fun, you should check out Adidas’ latest studs.
the nitroCharge
Called Nitrocharge, the boot is a successor to Adidas’ hugely popular f50 range. It is perfect for high intensity running and tackling, as it has been specifically designed to retain energy while you’re playing the game. The boot is a result of a twoyear process by Adidas, during which they analysed players’ performances from across the world and drew up statistics which were then applied in designing the studs.
the teChnologies
Nitrocharge uses a number of technologies which are aimed at helping you perform when on the ground. One such feature is the Energy Sling which arches all over the boot and supports cut and turn movements, leading to sharper and stable reactions while playing. The sole of the shoe uses a spring which provides energy during sprinting, while a protective mesh around the shoe ensures that your feet remain safe while tackling. The price might not make the shoe within everyone’s reach but if you can afford it and are serious about football, you should consider buying it. It can also act as a perfect present for your child who plays for his school football team. Where Adidas outlets across the city price `11,999
Sometimes too much stress and exercise can cause lactic acid to build up in the body, causing fatigue and exhaustion. But, the amino acids present in ACV act as an antidote. Better still, apple cider vinegar contains potassium and enzymes that may relieve that tired feeling. So, the next time you’re feeling drained, add a few teaspoons of the vinegar to a chilled glass of water and drink up.
Brightens teeth You would think that something acidic like vinegar would ruin your teeth instead of helping them. But, this is yet another perk of ACV. It is recommended that you gargle with the vinegar in the morning as it helps remove stains, whiten teeth and kill bacteria in your mouth.
Clears up skin This one has been tried and tested! Apple cider vinegar, when consumed daily and applied on your skin, can help clear up acne and pimples, thanks to its antiseptic properties. Make sure to drink a little ACV diluted in water once a day and at night. After you cleanse your face, apply ACV with a cotton pad across your entire face. Avoid applying it near your eyes though, as it may sting.
Weight loss And here’s the good news for all the dieters out there! If there was such a thing as a magic potion for weight loss, we’re sure that apple cider vinegar would make the list of ingredients. A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reported that when people consumed apple cider vinegar, they felt fuller and ate less. So, have 2-3 teaspoons of ACV half an hour before your meals with a glass of water.

At your fingertips Reflexology is used by many people to solve minor problems such as colds, coughs and troublesome headaches. Priyanka Singh gives you the steps to follow if you want to beat a headache with reflexology...
Y
our hands and feet have the power to affect your entire body. This technique is applied in reflexology or zone therapy, which is an alternative treatment that works by putting pressure on different pressure points on your hands, fingers, feet and ears. This is done without the use of any lotion or oil. While people who practice reflexology believe that even major diseases can be cured with these techniques, there has not been enough scientific evidence in its favour. But, when it comes to smaller problems such as tackling a cold, cough or headache, reflexology can actually give you significant relief. So, instead of popping painkillers, we teach you how to get rid of a headache with this method. We are refraining from dishing out foot reflexology methods as they can get a bit tricky if you aren’t at home and at work or in public. So, here are a few hand reflexology methods that can take care of your headache or migraine.
>> The next time you have a headache, try using hand reflexology instead of popping a pill
MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 2013
Step 1 DRink wateR If you have a headache, before trying reflexology, drink a glass of water. In the case of headaches, drinking water before you start makes reflexology work in better.
Step 2 Rotate the jointS for thumb: This step basically gives you energy, increases blood circulation and relaxes the bones present in your skull. Many bones in your skull, jaw and first half of your neck are represented by the bones and joints of your fingers and toes. Put your palm flat on a table or any flat surface that’s available. Now hold your thumb near the base joint (where your thumb and hand connects) and while holding it rotate that joint (that has been held) in a slow motion. Clockwise first and
then anti-clockwise. Do it ten times. Now, press on to the area of your thumb that is just above the second joint (keeping your hand flat on the table all this while) and twist it from side to side for about five seconds and then rotate in a circular motion for a few seconds one way and then the other. for fingers: Follow the same procedure as that for the thumb. Repeat the steps that you did to the area above the thumb to the consecutive joints in your fingers.
Step 3 gentle & fiRm Using all your fingers and the thumb of one hand, squeeze gently up and down the thumb of the other hand. Do this for 10 seconds. Repeat the same process with the rest of your fingers, taking 10 seconds for each.
Step 4 BReathing While performing reflexology for headache relief, concentrate on what you’re doing while breathing slowly. Breathe inwards; hold it for a few seconds and then exhale. People who are not used to deep breathing, might feel lightheaded since their brain is not accustomed to getting a lot of oxygen. Usually, this technique should lessen your headache to a large extent. In some situations, reflexology is not recommended. Make sure you discuss it with your doctor before you start any of it.
« DEALING WITH: LATE PERIODS Shutterstock
Is your period late this month? Don’t panic as Rhea Dhanbhoora gives you a few reasons apart from pregnancy why it might be delayed #1: illneSS Have you been sick lately? If the answer is yes, chances are, your illness is the reason behind your delayed periods. Even a short illness can cause your menstrual cycle to go off course, but don’t worry since this is usually just a temporary change.
#2: StReSS
>> Late periods don’t always mean that you’re pregnant
Yes, stress can affect almost everything in your life. We think that’s a really good reason to stay stress free, don’t you think? When you’re stressed, the hormone in your body that causes you to menstruate decreases, leading to irregular or missed periods. Practice yoga or meditation to keep calm.
#3: ChangeS
Whether it’s changes in your schedules, a sudden shift in timing or the stop and start of certain types of medication, changes can really affect your cycle. If you work or study in a situation that requires constant change in timings, try and make sure it is at least on a monthly basis, otherwise it can permanently shift your cycle.
#4: weight
If you’re overweight, your hormones will be unbalanced, causing irregularity and delays in your period. If you’ve suddenly lost weight and are now underweight, your body will see the same change. Slight weight gain or going back to ideal weight will help
your periods return to normal.
#5: peRimenopauSe
Do you think you’re too young for menopause, but you’re still missing your period often? You’re not pregnant, don’t worry. You’re probably just going through perimenopause, which is when you’re transitioning between youth and menopause. Your periods will be lighter or heavier and you could skip them quite frequently.
#6: ContRaCeptiveS
If you’re on the pill, chances are, you’re used to irregular periods. Even if you’ve recently taken the emergency contraceptive pill, there are chances that your periods will be late.

SUMMER EYE CARE

While you are busy taking care of your skin during summer, don’t forget your beloved eyes. Priyanka Singh gets you eye tips for summer
Y
ou might be using a series of products to protect your skin and hair from the harsh summer, but your eyes, which are the most sensitive part of your body, still stay unprotected most of the time. With cheap sunglasses widely available in the market, they give no protection to your eyes. Dr. Keiki Mehta, surgical head and director of Mehta International Eye Institute and Colaba Eye Hospital, gives us his summer tips for eye care during summer.
Small tipS to keep in mind l Sport larger shades.

Just as we use sunscreen to keep the sun’s UV rays from harming our skin, UV treatment in the lenses of eyeglasses blocks those same rays from damaging our eyes. Overexposure to ultraviolet light is thought to be a cause of cataracts, retinal damage and other eye problems. During summer, the ideal sunglasses to wear are those with a wraparound frame. It keeps the sun and dust out and keeps your eyes comparatively cooler. If you are planning on water sports this summer, make sure you use a good pair of sunglasses as ultraviolet light tends to reflect off water. By the evening, if your eyes are unprotected, they can turn red, which can

protective clear glaSSeS Protective glasses have polarised lenses. It is preferable that you use them all the time since they reduce glare from reflective surfaces. Polarised lenses are great for water-based activities and driving as well as for outdoor activities, such as camping, which are also common in summer. While indulging in camping activities, such as cooking around a camp fire, make sure that you have your glasses on.
Swimming in SUmmer The cool water of a swimming pool can be very inviting. But in no circumstance forget to wear your swimming goggles. In summer, the incidents of skin infection in swimming pools rises and most pools will also increase the amount of chlorine or other chemicals they use to keep the water safe. This often leads to watery and irritable eyes. Use your goggles while swimming and the moment you get out of the pool, wash your eyes with fresh water.
lUbricating eye dropS It’s not only your skin that dries out in summer, but even your eyes. Lubricating drops are ideal at this time of the year. Ideally, the drops should be preservative free and fortunately in India many are now available and can be bought off the shelf. Use the drops freely. They keep your eyes comfortable and healthy during summer.

dear barbara, Since the onset of summer, my face has turned very oily. Post taking my shower in the morning, after hardly an hour, the sheen is back on my face. As I don’t like my face to be greasy, I end up washing it at least four to five times in a day. I’ve been told that washing your face too often can be harsh for your skin, but I don’t understand what else can I do to get rid of the constant oiliness. Please help! — Shefali Shah, Jogeshwari dear Shefali, You’re right, you shouldn’t be washing your face with soap more than twice a day as it dries out your skin. Perhaps, you’re not taking adequate measures to counter the oil production, apart from washing your face. The heat during summer will increase your body’s
production of oil and so, you need to take special steps during these months. Always apply sunscreen before you step out in the sun — it will go a long way in reducing the amount of oil on your face. Also, cut back on alcohol as it makes you sweat more and include vegetables, such as carrots and spinach, in your diet as they can help slow oil production. And during the day, instead of a face wash, use blotting paper to remove the oil. dear barbara, I’m a college student and go out a lot. Frequently I use hair gel to style my hair. But, lately I’ve come across a few articles on the internet about how gels can lead to hair loss, grey hair and other scalp related problems. Should I stop using hair gels? — rohan kumar, mahim
dear rohan, Hair gels on their own will not damage your hair. But, it depends on whether you take care of your hair or not. If you want to keep using hair gel, you need to pay extra attention to your hair to ensure that you don’t damage it. Never go to sleep with gel still in your hair. If you don’t have the time to condition them, use a tiny amount of shampoo to remove the gel. You will also need to wash your hair every day and while doing so, ensure that you massage your scalp, so that your pores are clean and unblocked. Don’t use them too frequently, because after all, gels are made of chemicals. Also, ensure that you pick alcohol free gels. Send your questions to: healthandfitness@afternoondc.in

BJP wants govt to advance Parliament session to pass food security bill

YDERABAD: BJP president Rajnath Singh on Monday asked the government to advance the monsoon session of Parliament to pass the food security bill. "We are ready for a debate on food security and land acquisition bills. We want these
bills passed with some amendments. The monsoon session must be advanced for this," he told reporters here. He said it would be a cruel joke, if an ordinance is issued on the proposed food security bill. The two bills would have been passed in the last ses-
sion of Parliament had the UPA government accepted the resignations of law and railway ministers (Ashwin Kumar and Pawan Kumar Bansal), as sought by the BJP then. Dismissing the Congress allegation that the BJP is not letting the Parliament func-
tion smoothly, Rajnath Singh said the primary responsibility to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament lay with the government. Observing that the BJP's role is like that of a watch dog, he said the party was playing the role of principal opposition party effectively.

Acute shortage of doctors and drugs in J&K: CPI (M) S
RINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir unit of CPI (M) today expressed concern over the "acute shortage of doctors and life saving drugs" in hospitals and urged the government to ensure better medical facilities to the people. "The government should respond to the shortage of doctors and life saving drugs in hospitals across the state so that the patients suffering for want of consultations and important drugs are benefited," state secretary of CPI (M) M.Y. Tarigami said. Tarigami said the Valley hospitals were currently
running short of nearly 600 doctors with some 250 doctors illegally absent from their services. "Reports suggest that there are 72 Assistant Surgeons, 55 specialists and 62 paramedical posts vacant in hospitals of several of south Kashmir’s districts. It seems that the state is hardly bothered about these facts,” he added. Tarigami, who undertook a week-long tour to different areas, said even a cursory glimpse reveals that health care institutions are manned by few doctors and fewer para medic officials.

NYSE Euronext To Retry Selling Stake In MCX By A Business Reporter
G
lobal exchange giant NYSE Euronext is considering a fresh bid to sell its nearly 5 per cent stake in India’s premier commodity bourse MCX, after an earlier attempt failed in March this year. The sale was called off due to poor response from investors. NYSE Euronext, which runs leading bourses in the US and Europe, holds 4.79 % stake in Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) and its stake, is currently valued at over Rs 200 crore, reports PTI. According to the investment banking sources, NYSE Euronext will soon
make a fresh attempt to sell its MCX stake, either in part or full, depending on the market condition. The sale would most probably carried out through an open market transaction and would be part of NYSE Euronext’s stated objective to monetise non-strategic assets across the world. It had bought about 5 per cent stake in MCX for about Rs 240 crore in June 2008. The exchange has said in an investor presentation earlier that its MCX stake sale was expected to be concluded in the first half of 2013. When contacted, an NYSE spokesperson did not offer any fresh comments and said that the com-
pany management had addressed the query during its earnings call in February. At that time, NYSE Euronext’s Group Executive Vice President and CFO, Michael S Geltzeiler, had said that the company was continuing to deliver on its commitment to optimise the business portfolio with “the planned sale of all or part of our MCX stake” among other steps. NYSE Euronext is a leading global operator of financial markets and provider of innovative trading technologies. The company’s exchanges in Europe and the US trade equities, futures, options, fixed-income and exchange-traded products.
Moody’s Puts Debt Ratings Of SBI, ICICI, 9 Others Under Watch By A Business Reporter
G
BUSINESS
lobal credit rating agency Moody’s has said it has placed some debt ratings of 11 banks, including SBI, ICICI, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank, under review because of the updating of its methodology. The subordinated and junior subordinated debt ratings of these banks have been placed under review in the wake of the methodology update, said Moody’s Investors Services. The other banks are Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Canara Bank, IDBI Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Syndicate Bank and Union Bank of India. “The review takes place in the context of a methodology update
that has changed the way Moody’s looks at the probability of support, which has led to several sub-debt ratings in multiple banking systems being reviewed simultaneously,” the rating agency said. The agency also noted debts of those banks were placed under review that had benefited from an uplift linked to Moody’s prior assessment of systemic support in the country. However, the agency noted that the reviews of these banks’ sub-debt ratings were not indication of any change in the affected banks’ fundamental credit quality. “The reviews of the banks’ subdebt ratings are not in any way related to any deterioration in the affected banks’ fundamental credit
quality,” it said, but added that it needs to assess whether the government’s likely behaviour in times of stress has changed compared to previous assumptions. Moody’s also noted that its preliminary conclusion points to reasonable doubt over whether the status quo would survive test cases where governments provide significant financial support to banks, particularly in a systemic crisis that puts stress on the government’s own balance sheet. Moody’s expects to conclude its review within the next three months. However, the market did not react badly to the report and the Bankex was down just 50 points against the broader market which was down nearly double the Bankex.
BUSINESS BRIEFS BofA-ML Trims India’s FY14 GDP Forecast To 5.8% Bank of America Merill Lynch (BofA-ML) yesterday lowered India’s GDP growth projection yet again, saying the economy will expand at 5.8 per cent during the current fiscal in view of tight liquidity and slow industrial recovery. The global brokerage has also lowered the growth forecast to 6.8 per cent for the 2014-15 fiscal. “With tight liquidity delaying lending rate cuts and by extension, industrial recovery, we have marginally pared our growth forecast to 5.8 per cent from 6 per cent earlier in FY14 and 6.8 per cent from 7.2 per cent in FY15,” BofA-ML economists said in a note.
Corporates Raise Rs 41,812 Crore Via Private Placement Indian companies had raised a staggering Rs 41,812 crore through private placement of debt securities in April – the highest level in nine months. In debt private placements, firms issue debt securities or bonds to institutional investors to raise capital. According to latest data available with Sebi, Indian firms garnered a total of Rs 41,812 crore from the debt on a private placement basis route. This was a robust rise from Rs 39,170 crore garnered in the preceding month.
Sebi exempts Educomp’s CMD From Making Open Offer Market regulator Sebi has exempted Educomp Solutions Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Prakash from making an open offer with respect to his proposed acquisition of 7.5 % stake in the company. Oil Min Orders RIL To Divert RCF Gas To Andhra Pradesh With output from Reliance Industries’ KG-D6 fields hitting a new low, the Oil Ministry has ordered the Mukesh Ambani-run firm to divert a part of gas allocated to Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) to private power plants in Andhra Pradesh. The ministry on May 31 ordered that a part of 2.1 million standard cubic metres per day of KG-D6 gas allocated to RCF’s Thal urea manufacturing plant be diverted to Hyderabad-based Bhagaynagar Gas Ltd (BGL) and power plants in Andhra Pradesh under a so-called gas swapping arrangement.

The dancers who participated in the festival were Deepa Sashindran for Kuchipudi, Swapana Rajendrakumar for Mohiniattam, Ashwini and Tejali for Kathak, Sanjib Bhattacharya for Manipuri, Asish Pillai for Bharata Natyam, Prarthana Kadam for Odissi and Jayashree Das for Kathakali. Although brief, most of the performances were praiseworthy. Deepa is the disciple of the

Swapna is the ardent disciple of renowned Mohiniattam danseuse Sunanda Nair. Her performance was noteworthy for the technical and expressional quality. Her 'abhinaya' was natural and sincere.
Disciples of accomplished Kathak exponent Tina Tambe, Ashwini and Tejali, their performance was lively and revealed the prowess of the dancers both in pure and expressional dancing.which was evident in 'chaturang' and in the number "Dekho Re Sakhi Brij Me Holi' that described the festival of colours. While Ashish Pillai revealed his command over Bharata Natyam, Sanjib Bhattacharya was subtle and comfortable while dancing the exquisite Manipuri dance. Prarthana interpreted the Odissi grace and Jayashree, disciple of Kalamandalam GopalaKrishnan proved her command over 'abhinaya' while enacting the demoness Poothana in the Kathakali style. he sea of humanity that had assembled at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Kanji Khetsi Hall near Girgaum Chowpatty was a resounding proof, if at all any proof was needed, of Omkar Prasad Nayyar's popularity. The composer of evergreen hit songs passed away 6 years ago. Yet his name continues to cast a spell on fans who rushed to the venue to applaud the launch of his biography written by Lata Jagtiani. Among those who were present on the dais were the veteran radio anchor Ameen Sayani, singer Ashok Chopra, Yogesh Kamdar and an-
hand. O P, as Nayyar was lovingly referred to, created tunes for super hit films like 'C I D', 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha', 'Kalpana', 'Naya Daur' amd 'Kashmir Ki Kali'. Those tunes are still hummed by generations of music lovers. Ameen Sayani, who was the presenter of the famed 'Binaca Geet Mala', recalled the contribution of the master tune smith in glowing terms. Lata Jagtiani, the author, in a moving speech, told the audience about the man and his times. “He accepted his ups and downs philosophically and had cultivated an inner calm.”

M MUMBAI: Serco Global Services won the inaugural D Y Patil T-20 office Cricket Tournament beating Mumbai Police by four wickets in a match interrupted by premonsoon showers in Navi Mumbai on Sunday night. At the floodlit D Y Patil Stadium which has a super –sopper, play could be resumed after almost an hour after the Police outfit managed to put on 119 for 7 on the board which appeared to be an easily achievable target. It looked so till the Serco openers were at the crease as they put on 65 at the halfway stage. But the loss of Brijesh Poojary (27) and Kevin Almeida (39) saw them losing the momentum. The three left-arm spinners Shashikant Kadam, Alpesh Ramjani and Vinayak Bhoir in the police ranks then went about their jobs bowling a restrictive line which forced the rival batters to commit mistakes that didn’t prove costly in the end.
Brendon McCullum buoyed by England series win
SOUTHAMPTON: New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said his side had showed how “good a team we can be” after wrapping up a one-day series win over England. Martin Guptill’s New Zealand record 189 not out — the opener’s second successive unbeaten hundred — was the cornerstone of the Black Caps’ total of 359 for three that was behind an 86-run win at Southampton yesterday. That gave them an unbeatable 2-0 lead in a threematch series ahead of Wednesday’s clash at Trent Bridge and followed a five-wicket win at Lord’s on Friday where Guptill scored an unbeaten 103.

Meanwhile, overnight leaders, GM Mchedlishvili Mikheil (ELO 2654) and GM Pentasulaia Levan (ELO 2563), both from Georgia, agreed to a quick draw thus maintaining their half point slender lead with 6.5 points. IM Ravichandran Siddharth stunned GM Tamas in a game of Slav Defense against the Queen Pawn opening. On the 8th move Ravichandran opened his ‘h’ file and on the 17th grabbed a pawn with his knight at ‘h2’, opening the file completely. Fodor tried to trap that knight, which was smartly guarded by Ravichandran. Ravichandran then connected the rooks by playing his king at ‘d7’, which worsened the situation for Fodor. With the loss of the bishop on the 31st move, Fodor had no option but to accept defeat. On the 9th table, untitled Sameer Kathmale upset the plans of Indian IM Karthikeyan P (ELO 2415) of TN. The game started in Caro-
IM Ravichandran (left) in action against GM Tamas of Hungary. can Defence and Sameer offered his knight on the 23rd move to do a mating attack, which was wisely rejected by Karthikeyan. Sameer is in with a norm chance depending on the result of his game in the 9th round on Tuesday. Jagdale, Shirke are not coming back: Jt Secy Thakur
N
EW DELHI: The BCCI will have to search for a new interim secretary and treasurer after Sanjay Jagdale and Ajay Shirke refused to reconsider their resignation tendered in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal that has rocked Indian cricket. “They (Jagdale and Shirke) have informed that they are not coming back,” joint secretary Anurag Thakur told PTI. With Jagdale and Shirke’s refusal to come back, it will be a blow for Jagmohan Dalmiya led working group to function smoothly. As of now Thakur will be the acting secretary of the BCCI. “I will be carrying out the function of BCCI secretary till the time we convene a Special General Body Meeting. In order to elect or select a new secretary and treasurer, we need to hold a Special General Body meeting,” Thakur explained. Asked about the allegation levelled by former BCCI president Inderjit Singh Bindra who termed the working committee meeting as “worse than match fixing,” Thakur said “I don’t wish to make any comments.” Treasurer Shirke and secretary Jagdale had resigned on Friday in protest in the manner BCCI, under the stewardship of N Srinivasan, functioned post the spot-fixing scandal and the arrest of three cricketers and president’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. At the meeting on Sunday, Srinivasan apparently refused to accept the resignation of the duo and they were given 24 hours to reconsider their stand. As they had maintained since yesterday, the duo stood by their decision of not returning to the Board.

IN BRIEF Not managed by Rhiti Sports, says pacer R P Singh
NEW DELHI: Pacer Rudra Pratap Singh denied being managed by Rhiti Sports, the firm in which Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has a 15 per cent stake, raising questions of a possible conflict of interest. A newspaper today reported that Dhoni has a 15 per cent stake in the company, which, the report claimed, manages R P Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha. Interestingly, two of these players -- Raina and Jadeja -- are part of the same IPL franchise, the Chennai Super Kings, which is also captained by Dhoni. "Don't know what exactly is running in the news but just to clarify I am not with Rhiti Sports," tweeted R P Singh after the report came out. Rhiti Sports is owned by Arun Pandey, a close friend of Dhoni. In 2010, Dhoni signed up with Rhiti reportedly for Rs 210 crore, an average of Rs 70 crore a year, the costliest deal in Indian cricket.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) refuted claims by Indian cricket administrator IS Bindra that a BCCI official had arm-twisted them to withdraw a report which had mentioned an Indian player allegedly violating the anti-corruption regulations during the Indian tour in 2010. "Sri Lanka Cricket read with surprise, an account of an incident that supposedly lead to the filing of an anti- corruption report during the Indian tour of Sri Lanka in 2010 and the subsequent withdrawal of the said report due to 'arm twisting' by the BCCI. "We wish to state that such an incident did not take place as alleged and no report was submitted to the Indian Team Manager nor was an incident report filed with the Anti Corruption Unit of the ICC who were present during the series. The match will also be a dress rehearsal of sorts for the 'Men In Blue' as skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will more or less decide on his likely playing XI based on the performance of the two warm-up games. It will be a test for Kohli and Co against Australian seamers who are relatively better than the Lankans. The left-arm seam troika of Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson and James Faulkner could prove to be a handful if conditions favour swing bowling. While Starc is coming back from an injury, Johnson and Faulkner have been in fantastic form in the recently concluded IPL in which both were among the top-five wicket-takers. Team India would surely take a lot of confidence from the fact that it successfully chased down a mammoth Lankan total of 333 with consummate ease. Kohli plundered 144 while comeback
man Dinesh Karthik, by scoring a fine century, staked a strong claim for a place in the playing XI. What might be a worrying factor for Dhoni is the performance of 'IPL Specialist' Rohit Sharma. Despite enjoying a fine IPL, Rohit as usual flattered to deceive in India colours as he was out in a pathetic fashion during the first warm-up game. Non-performance for India is nothing new with Rohit but it will be interesting to see how long Dhoni carries the Mumbaikar based purely on his talent. Suresh Raina, Dhoni and the two openers would expect that they get some more time before the real action starts on Thursday. Dhoni will also be a touch worried with the performance of his bowlers in the first warm-up game. The Sri Lankan batsmen seemingly didn't do anything special yet notched up a score in excess of 325. Agreed that the Edgbaston track suited stroke players in the absence of sufficent lateral movement, but the likes of Irfan Pathan, Ishant Sharma, Raganath Vinay Kumar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar hardly maintained any
discipline in terms of line and length. Dhoni didn't use his fastest bowler, Umesh Yadav, during the match but the Vidarbha lad is expected to play against Australia. The spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra also couldn't make much of an impact as all players were allowed to play in the unofficial one dayer. As of now, it's an open secret that Ashwin will don the mantle of premier spinner while the skipper's Go-To Man 'Sir Jadeja' is expected to figure in the lineup. For Australia, a good performance in the tournament will give them much needed boost ahead of their real battle -- The Ashes. After the 0-4 drubbing at the hands of India a couple of months back, Michael Clarke would expect that his team would produce a much improved performance in the 50-over version. Shane Watson's return to form during the IPL is a positive sign for the Aussies. That he has started bowling adds the necessary balance to the line-up that has some talented youngsters like Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh to name a few.
EW DELHI: The sports management firm that manages Mahendra Singh Dhoni clarified that the India skipper holds no stake in the company, putting to rest speculations about a possible conflict of interest. It was reported in the media that Dhoni has a 15 per cent stake in Rhiti Sports which also manages Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha, besides the Indian captain. However, the firm made it clear that Dhoni was a shareholder only for a brief period, and currently has no stake. "As on date, MSD holds no shareholding in Rhiti Sports Management (P) Ltd. However, it is made clear that shareholding was allotted to MSD on 22.03.2013 only to secure certain old outstanding which were due for more than one year. Further, the payments were cleared in April 2013 and the shareholding was transferred back to promoter of the company on 26.04.2013," Rhiti Sports chairman Arun Pandey said in a statement. In 2010, Dhoni signed up with Rhiti Sports reportedly for Rs 210 crore, an average of Rs 70 crore a year, the costliest deal in Indian cricket. "We at Rhiti Sports Management Pvt Ltd are greatly aggrieved at the widespread media reports regarding alleged conflict of interest of MSD. Though not obligated to but in order to put at rest these widespread speculations, we are issuing the following statement to bring in knowledge the correct factual matrix.”
Cricket no more a gentleman’s game: Prasanna N
EW DELHI: Terming the BCCI's Emergent Working Committee meeting in Chennai a sham, former spin legend Erapalli Prasanna said that money is ruling the sport now and it is no more a gentleman's game. "The entire controversy is not going to affect the popularity of cricket in India as we have seen packed stadiums in IPL. Followers of the game are immense here but I can see the gentleman's approach in the game is zero now," Prasanna told PTI Bhasha. "Money is ruling the game now and it hurts as cricket has been a glorious game of uncertainties. During our times if a batsman was out but umpire was in dilemma, the batsman himself used to walk out. That was called
working committee meeting Sunday was nothing more than a sham. "It is a simple step of manoeuvring and sham. It was expected that Board chief N Srinivasan would resign but it did not happen. He has 'stepped aside' and I don't know what will be his powers now," he said. "If this was the case then why did they deliberate so long. They could have done it before. I guess (Jagmohan) Dalmiya has only a gentleman's game but now no- three months time and I don't body is bothered. Cricketers think that despite being a former think that umpires are paid well president he can set the things in and it is their duty to judge. The right direction in such a short whole approach has been span of time," said Prasanna. Stating that it was not a workchanged," the former off spinner, who has taken 189 wickets in 49 able solution, Prasanna said, "I Tests between 1967 to 1978, said. don't think that this is going to Prasanna insisted that BCCI's work. Nothing is clear and it will
further enhance complications." He felt that legalising betting in cricket was a possibility, which could be explored. "I am not endorsing the suggestion to legalise betting but I feel that it is a possibility which can be explored like in horse racing. Betting is a gamble where no player, no franchise and no official is involved. They can talk to horse racing officials in this regard," he said. Asked about his views on IPL, Prasanna supported the cash rich T20 league, saying, "I don't think that IPL is not giving anything to Indian cricket. Fielding standards of our players have gone higher. This league gives platform to youngsters to showcase their skills. It is good for cricket."

ARIS: Third seed Victoria Azarenka reached the French Open quarter-finals for the third time today with a 6-3, 6-0 win over 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone. The double Australian Open champion will now face Russian 12th seed Maria Kirilenko for a semi-final place. The protagonists know each other well, not least as erstwhile doubles partners — they were notably runners-up at the 2011 Australian Open while Azarenka saw off Kirilenko in the London Olympics bronze medal match last summer. In her fourth round match, Kirilenko, despite needing treatment for a sore shoulder, saw off unseeded Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States 7-5, 6-4 to reach the last eight. The 26-year-old from Moscow, who broke in the sixth and eighth games to make up for her slow start and then overcame an opening service loss at the start of the second set, has now equalled her best ever Grand Slam showing of runs to the quarters at Wimbledon 2012 and the Australian Open three seasons ago. Schiavone, the world number 50, matched the 23-year-old Azarenka shot for shot and scream for scream in a first set which featured six breaks of serve.

The big four, already shorn of Andy Murray at the 2013 French Open, are not having it all their own way. My fight against wrongdoings in BCCI will continue: Bindra C
HANDIGARH: Terming the BCCI’s emergency meeting at Chennai a “farce”, former Board chief and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) president I S Bindra today said that his crusade against wrongdoings would continue. “It is a difficult fight but then other sports internationally have, to a large extent, succeeded in battling the monster. It has to be a relentless fight and it has to be fought with conviction and zero tolerance,” Bindra was quoted as saying on his website, www.Isbindra.Com. He said that a majority of cricket fans were disappointed with the outcome of the so-called emergency meeting of BCCI’s working committee yesterday.
“I can only offer my sympathies to them (fans). Frankly, at the end of it all, I had a sinking feeling and felt why at all did I travel down south in this excruciating heat, catching a flight at six,” Bindra said. He said that it was a colossal waste of Board’s money and time of the members as well as of the huge posse of media which waited in anticipation to hear something more tangible than “a drab statement issued from Delhi by the board’s joint secretary who, along with two other politicians did not think the meeting was important enough to fly down to Chennai”. “After the meeting I can only construe that the Board’s image has taken a beating and in all my years

of association with it I have never seen its reputation plummet to rock bottom,” Bindra said while elaborating the proceedings of yesterday’s meeting. He said that soon after calling the meeting to order, Board president N Srinivasan shocked the gathering by saying that the meet was an “informal one as a board affiliate questioned its validity since the mandatory 72 hours notice was not given as required under the BCCI constitution”. Bindra claimed that many members at the meeting felt that the best course for Srinivasan was to quit as a first step to restore peoples’ faith in the game in general and the Board in particular.
Dalmiya promises to clean up cricket K
Sri Lanka West Indies Warm-up tie to be played at: Kensington Oval, London Time: 15:00 Hours
OLKATA: Banning after match parties during the Indian Premier League could be one of the solutions to cleanse cricket, according to BCCI’s Working Group chief Jagmohan Dalmiya who today promised to leave no stone unturned to restore the credibility of the game. Addressing his first press conference since taking over charge from N Srinivasan who stepped aside, Dalmiya said that he will make all efforts to achieve the ultimate goal so that “the good name of cricket is retained”. Asked whether he would consider banning after match parties in the IPL as part of his cleaning up process, he said, “One of the possibility could be that. “I don’t have any medicine that you get instant result. We don’t have
any such kind of a magic. We will try our best,” he said. The 73-year-old Dalmiya made it clear that he had powers to fill up vacancies in the Board and will await a final response from Ajay Shirke before taking the required decisions. “They (Jagdale and Shirke) were given 24 hours time. Initially, we requested that we have full faith in you and therefore please carry on and don’t insist on resignation. They were given 24 hours time. That was yesterday’s position. “As far as Jagdale is concerned, he has no intention to withdraw resignation. That’s the stand so far. I tried to talk to Shirke, also Mr Shetty and others tried to talk to him but not able to communicate with him. I will wait.”
Paes, Jelena in mixed doubles second round P
ARIS: Leander Paes kept the Indian challenge alive in the mixed doubles event of the French Open by moving to the second round along with partner Jelena Jankovic. The unseeded Indo-Serbian pair registered a 7-5, 6-3 win over Galina Voskoboeva and Daniele Bracciali in one hour and 16 minutes. Paes is now the only Indian surviving in the event as Sania Mirza, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna have all exited with their respective partners after suffering first round defeats. Sania’s defeat with new Swede partner was shocking as they were given the top billing. They lost to Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Cara Black. Paes and Jelena saved eight of the 10 break chances and that proved decisive in the outcome of the match. In the next round they face the eighth seeded pair of American Liezel Huber and Brazilian Marcelo Melo.
