Rich investors were lured into buying non-existent flats in Central Mumbai at very low rates
By Neel Shah

ore than three months after booking a fraudster for duping several people by falsely selling non-existent flats from a project of another developer, the Mumbai police are yet to arrest the
main accused, Jitendra Jain, and his cartel. Jain, who is a well-known developer from the western suburbs, has reportedly duped several people by claiming that he was the director of Vighnaharta Builders, and had undertaken the project worth sev-
eral crores in Central Mumbai. To make his claims look factual, Jain forged various documents, including the letterhead of Vighnaharta Builders, and raked in crores of rupees from perspective Continued on pg 7 «

Sakshi with her grandmother Ratan
By A Staff Reporter
N
ine-year-old Sakshi Mahapure from Kolhapur recently got a new lease of life from her grandmother after undergoing a kidney transplant at SevenHills hospital in April this year. Having been diagnosed with chronic renal failure in August 2012, dialysis started taking a toll on Sakshi’s In kidney dysplasia, the internal structures of one or both of the baby’s kidneys do not develop normally. Normal kidney tissues are replaced by fluid-filled sacs called cysts. Kidney dysplasia usually happens in only one kidney.
ing the transplant, Sakshi was discharged on April 27, 2013 and was declared “completely recovered” on May 25, 2013. Dr. Avanish Arora, Transplant Surgeon, SevenHills Hospital said “Post transplantation, the patient immediately started producing good volumes of urine from the transplanted kidney and started regaining good health.”
Bharat Shah, one of the treating consultants said, “Sakshi was suffering from congenital dysplastic kidneys. The reason her family did not get to know about this problem earlier is that many kidney diseases are slowly progressive. The family realised about her disease only when her blood pressure started increasing. She was put on peritoneal dialysis.” After having completed all the necessary formalities for a transplant, the surgery was scheduled on April 16, 2013. After successfully undergo-
morale so the Mahapures decided to find a suitable donor for Sakshi’s transplant. SevenHills hospital found the donor in Ratan, her grandmother, who readily agreed to donate her kidney to her grand daughter. Sakshi suffered from a kidney disorder since birth. Dr.

Sponsor year-long lunch for school kids Corporate collaboration aims at promoting Midday Meal Scheme in Indian schools By A Staff Reporter
I
n what can be a boost to the Midday Meal Scheme – a campaign aimed at preventing malnutrition, curbing classroom hunger and increasing school enrolments and attendance – Groupon India has collaborated with GiveIndia and The Akshaya Patra Foundation to support scheme. As part of this partnership, Groupon India will introduce a special offer for Rs.660 which will sponsor a yearlong supply of nutritious lunch for a school child through GiveIndia and the Akshaya Patra Foundation. GiveIndia is a donation platform that allows donors to support a cause of their choice from about 200 NGOs that have been scrutinised for transparency and credibility. The online platform has reviewed over 3,000 non-profit organisations from all over India to identify over 200 plus organisations and work for causes ranging from child welfare and education to disability, poverty, and women's empowerment. Dhaval Udani, CEO, GiveIndia, said, “Today as India's middle class grows and be-
comes more ambitious, they want to make individual lifestyle choices. As disposable income grows, more and more people are getting conscious of their social responsibility as well. With the fast paced life today, they want to contribute to social causes but don’t find convenient, trusted platforms to make donations. We truly appreciate Groupon India for stepping forward and giving us a larger donation platform to make a difference to hundreds of innocent children across the country.” Speaking about the support to the Midday Meal Scheme, Ankur Warikoo, CEO, Groupon India, said, “We believe in making a contribution to the society that we are a part of. To help GiveIndia and The Akshay Patra Foundation take their Midday Meal Scheme to a larger audience, we are extremely proud to be a part of this noble initiative. We are positive that through this special deal more and more children will receive nutritious meals and education. The deal is priced at a nominal cost and is transparent as donors will receive a feedback report on the utilisation of their donation.”
Script writer ends life By Suresh Golani
A
small-time Bollywood film script writer committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Mira Road, late on Tuesday night. According to the police, the deceased, who has been identified as Amir Yusuf Mir (25), stayed alone in a rented accommodation in the Beverly Park area of Mira Road. The security personnel of
the building spotted Mir’s body hanging from the ceiling in his flat at about 6 am on Wednesday. Investigations revealed that he was a small time script writer for Hindi films and had moved into the flat six months ago. As no suicide note has been recovered, the police are yet to ascertain the reason why Mir took the extreme step. Further investigations are on.

Age is no bar for this artist
He comes in rarely now, age is catching up, but Vijay Sawant’s portfolio of drawings, of trees, of landmarks, of faces, waxes and wanes each time we see him. It waxes when he has come into the city from Nashik, where he makes his home. And it wanes just before he goes back, so it is a good waning, caused by people buying his work. Over the years, we have both received and bought from him his ink drawings of trees, stately, lush, meticulously done. An art critic and curator took a look at the latest one, a towering banyan in his usual monochrome, and said, “It’s good, but it’s not inspired. You could learn to do this yourself”. So we took back the drawing and looked carefully at it and thought, not likely. If we lived to be a hundred, we could never replicate Mr Sawant’s lovingly detailed depictions of the emperors of forests – banyans, acacias, gul mohurs, standing sturdily in the earth, rooted forever. On the branches, if you ask him nicely, he will sometimes draw really tiny birds. Left to ourselves we would have dashed them off in a second, but Mr Sawant spends time even on these artistic little dots. We know. We have watched him. This time he has had a good trip, sold a few more drawings and paintings to known names. He has a few more up his sleeve and at least one in his portfolio. This is a line drawing of a ship, the London, a multi-masted vessel with 90 guns that he is doing for a group of Gujarati traders whose forefathers once traveled in the same ship to trade overseas. He saw the picture, now he has done the drawing. With the rains (hopefully) almost upon us, he will go back to Nashik, and when there is a lull, off he will go to a nearby forest, put up his easel, his stool, then stand or sit and draw from nature.

Recently she went to a city hospital to have an x-ray and during the procedure, she moved involuntarily. She says the ex-ray technician was convinced she had done it on purpose. So much said in so few words. So much display of ignorance in the first city of a nation that prides itself on its ancient culture, its academic brilliance, it’s preeminent position in the world of technology. That technician wouldn’t last a second in any job in the west.
Can’t ignore NaMo
Monday we were at the NCPA’s Godrej Little Theatre, attending a panel discussion organized by Anil Dharker’s Literature Live on the A young woman we know is smart, recently launched book by clever, afflicted with cerebral palsy journalist Kingshuk Nag titled The from birth, confined to a wheelchair Namo Story: A Political Life.
The panel itself comprised three other journalists, Siddharth Bhatia, Bharat Raut, also a Shiv Sena MP, and Kumar Ketkar, editor of Divya Jyoti, and of course Dharker himself also has a journalistic background and in fact, most of them had worked with each other at some point or the other so it was all very comfortable even when it was unavoidably confrontational. For instance, as moderator Dharker kicked off by asking why the whole book seemed more reportage than anything else and why no victim stories had been included. To which Nag, who seemed a man of rather few words, said, “Everyone knows the sites of the worst atrocities, enough has been written about them, this is the book trying to explain Narendra Modi’s political life, and anyway, I was a victim.” So Dharker said, “Oh really, how?” And Nag replied that he had been threatened by Modi and at one point required four guards. But it went on like that, the questions
being asked and all the panelists responding with gusto as only journalists can when asked to open their mouths. Then the audience got into the act and there were more questions and finally Dharker asked the question everyone was really waiting for – what did they think would happen if Narendrabhai ever became PM? What emerged largely was that no-one thought he would and if he did, the results could be horrendous. So, asked one member of the audience of the panel comprising one author, two openly against Namo, one fence-sitter and one Shiv Sainik, if all of them thought there was no chance of Modi becoming PM, how come the media itself seems to think that he’s going to be the next PM. Was it because of the sample sizes, she asked? Which was a very good question, but we’re going to have to wait for 2014 before we get a real answer.

MUMBHAI
Busy as ever, our Vijay Sawant, artist, painter, lover of trees, dropped in yesterday to tell us he has sold a few more fine specimens of his work to well-known names like Cyrus Guzder and the Sadanand Sules, people he has known for a long time and who always seem ready to welcome him warmly. As we do – most of the time!
Police bharti: First they line up outside the gate, coming inside in carefully counted batches at the police ground in Naigaon. You can almost feel the hope in the air, says our photographer. On Wednesday, there must have been nearly 500 of them, already through getting their measurements taken. Inside the ground, they were told what to do, first long jumps, then shot putt, then running, to meet the basic physical criteria. As each candidate ran up to the take-off line, you could almost see the strain on the face, the thud on the sand and then the hope as the scorers bent to their jobs. Many will go away disappointed but the lucky ones will stay on to join the ranks of the police force in Mumbai or the rest of the state. Not one of the easiest jobs in the world but you would never think that, watching them almost breaking down the gate to get in!

fter 121 days, the Solapur farmers’ protest for the ‘just and natural’ release of drinking water supply from the Ujjani Dam, has become the second longest protest in the recent history of Mumbai, second only to the historic mill workers protest which has, to date, never been officially called off even after 32 years! And though the farmers’ efforts to engage Mantralaya in their problems has not borne fruit, at least they have succeeded in holding a special ritual aimed at appeasing the rain gods. This ritual is the marriage of two donkeys and it was held at the Poddar College in Dadar today, in spite of attempts to scuttle it by the authorities. Prabhakar Shivajirao Deshmukh (aka Ajit Pawar’s “some
Deshmukh”) of the Solapur Zilla Janahit Shetakari Sanghatana, along with his fellow farmers, has been protesting at Azad Maidan from February 5, 2013, against the state government’s failure to release drinking water from the Ujjani Dam. The city police were instructed (reportedly by the Home Ministry in new Delhi under instructions from none other than Sushil Shinde, the Home Minister who comes from Solapur), that no donkeys’ marriage was to be held. Earlier it had been planned at Azad Maidan on Tuesday. The Mumbai police successfully thwarted this and some policemen were deployed to keep a watch on farmers who slept at Azad Maidan. On Wednesday before dawn, Deshmukh, along with selected farmers, jumped over the Azad Maidan fences and managed to escape. As

M
uch to the relief of the Congress leadership its nominee Nandini Nilesh Parvekar managed to retain the Yavatmal assembly seat yesterday by defeating her nearest BJP rival ex-MLA Madan Yerawar by a margin of 15,231 votes. In the counting of votes, which was taken up yesterday, Parvekar polled 62,509 votes, while Yerawar acquired 47,278 votes. This time around the victory margin has come down by 4,644 votes. The low voter turn out of 36.57 percent on June 2 was attributed to the 237 marriages that happened on that day. In the final analysis the low voter turnout proved beneficial for the Congress as its committed voters seem to have bailed it out. Farmers from Solapur district, including the now famous ‘that Deshmukh,’ gathered at Poddar College yesterday and got these donkeys ‘married’ in a bid to please the rain gods. soon as they realized what had happened, policemen began hunting for them via mobile locations. But the farmers, most of whom have just finished school or studied till Standard 12, proved
more than a match. They switched off their mobile phones, removed the SIM cards and virtually disappeared into the city. All secretly gathered in front of Poddar College in
Dadar, brought a couple of donkeys and got them married in a bid to make the rain gods bless the whole state. Deshmukh said, “It is very unfair that our just and natural demand for water is denied. Instead, the deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar made a mockery of our demand publicly. We met with Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to resolve the issue amicably. However, while both assured us of their help in releasing water from the Ujjani Dam, neither kept their promises.” He added, “121 days is a very long time. It is high time we went back our farms now as the monsoon will come shortly. Our protest is not over yet.” In 121 days, Deshmukh has made 14 different protests; most of them were at Varsha,

First Aid workshop at Fortis HIGH CLASS RIP-OFF By A Staff Reporter
C
orrect and timely first aid can help an accident victim survive till the time he or she reaches the hospital is what Fortis Hospital at Mulund wanted to teach the rickshaw drivers of the city at the workshop held on June 5, 2013. This is the first time that a workshop of this kind is being held for the rickshaw drivers of Mumbai. “With the monsoons approaching and the bad condition of the roads, accidents become more common. Autos are seen in huge numbers in the Mumbai and given the helpful nature of the auto rickshaw drivers; it would help save lives if they know how to give immediate and correct first aid to victims of accidents. It would give several victims a chance for survival after reaching the hospital,” said Dr. Manjeet Singh, Occupational Health Physician and exclusive first aid/CPR trainer who conducted the workshop. The bunch of thirty odd rickshaw drivers enthusiastically participated in the workshop and also took an oath that they would keep in mind and apply these techniques of first aid. “I have learnt so much today from this session. Previously, we used to hes-
itate to help accidents victims for the fear of doing something wrong and causing further harm to the victim and also being interrogated by the police. But now, we have realised our duty as citizens of the city. We know that we can do the right thing to help an accident victim and that police also won’t harass us unnecessarily. We will be proactive in helping people,” said Mahendra K Naram, a thirty year veteran rickshaw driver. Dr. Singh also spoke about how common everyday use items like combs, keys, dupattas can act as organ/life savers in case of accidents. “An unconscious person can survive for thirty to forty fives minutes if he is brought to the recovery position, buying him enough time get medical help. Several fractures can be avoided from getting worse if the victim is handled the right way,” added Dr. Singh. “Presence of mind during times of emergency is the key to help victims reach hospital on time,” said Dr. Singh. The drivers were taught to impart Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) which helps save a casualty from heart attack till medical help arrives. Fortis plans to hold a similar workshop for BEST bus drivers also.
COPS PULLED UP neighbor, Sufiyan Sheikh alias Munna (28), who remains untraceable till now. It is believed that the whole drama was instigated by the Vakola landlord, J.C. D’Souza, who wanted to get the flats where Gupta and Sheikh resided, vacated under some pretext, and got the Bandra police to raid the place for drugs. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, Vakola Division, Jhunjiral Garal, “We have added more sections in the FIR, including kidnapping, and the guilty
policemen will be disciplined.” Rajesh Gupta alias Guddu told this paper, “I am very thankful for the timely article, otherwise I don’t know what would have happened to me. I was threatened by an informer named Kausal, who brought the Bandra police to my house in Vakola.” Naina Patil, a social worker who took the initiative to intervene in the matter, said, “We will take out a morcha to the Vakola police station if the guilty officers are not punished. This is the most bizarre
incident I have ever heard of. On Tuesday night, two constables from the Bandra police station approached me and asked me to take back our complaint.” API Mukund Yadav from Bandra police station, in his defence, said, “We got a tipoff about drugs at Rajesh’s house. We were in a hurry to crack the case and therefore did not maintain the diary with the Vakola local police. I did not find anything from Rajesh, so presented him before senior police inspector of Bandra police who ordered me to release him.” However, a police officer, who wished not to be named, said the procedure was wholly illegal and morally wrong.
Continued from pg 3 « flat buyers, said police. The act of forgery has also been corroborated by experts, said police. Talking to the ADC, senior inspector of Mahim police station, Dashrath Patil, said, “The police have received reports from experts about the documents being forged, based on which a detailed report of the case has been submitted to the Zonal DCP, who is to decide on the further course of action against the culprits.” Adding further, “It would not be appropriate for me to talk about the investigations part, as I have already been transferred from the police station and am currently waiting for my relieve orders,” said Patil. Last week the latter was transferred to the Special Branch-1 (SB-1) department of Mumbai police. Explaining the modus operandi of Jain, who is director of Kamla Landmark Construction, investigators from Mahim police station said that Jain came know that Vighnaharta Builders were treading slowly to complete all the legal formalities before starting the project. Taking the advantage of this, he masterminded the racket by announcing the prelaunch booking of the flats at cheaper rates in comparison with the ongoing rates in Central Mumbai area. “This, perhaps, attracted prospective flat buyers, mostly rich investors, who immediately booked a few flats in the two saleable towers, which were supposed to be constructed by the complainant,” informed sub-inspector Ritesh Aher, investigating officer in the
case. Moreover, Kamla Landmark Construction, said police, had prepared false plan and elevation and posted the details of the redevelopment project on its global website, designating the building as ‘Trident’, added the investigators. It was here that Santosh Mane, the original director of Vighnaharta Builders, learned about Jain hoodwinking people by his false claims and besmirching his company’s reputation. Subsequently, Mane filed an FIR at Mahim police station, naming Jain and Sukhprit Avtar Singh Kalsi, as the main accused among several other names mentioned in the complaint. Police has booked the accused under sections 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 465 (Punishment for forgery), 467 (Forgery of Valuable Security), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document), 120 (b) (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in futherance of common intention) of IPC. Meanwhile, when the ADC asked Jain whether he was involved in such fraudulent acts, the accused through sms replied, “It is false and my company is not involved in any such activities.” Box Item (To be highlighted) When asked about the delay in arrest by police, despite of having enough proof against the culprits, DCP (Zone 5) Dhananjay Kulkarni, said, “I would inquire with the investigating officer of the case.” neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Real survey this time After listing a building that did not exist, NMMC will undertake fresh survey of dangerous structures in the satellite city By Amit Srivastav
T
he anti-encroachment and town planning department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will carry out a fresh survey of dangerous buildings in the city and submit its report in a week’s time, said Jagannath Sinnarkar, deputy municipal commissioner of NMMC, during the standing committee meeting held onWednesday at the civic headquarters in Belapur. The earlier survey, details of which were released a week ago, had mistakenly included a school building which was already torn down by the civic body for redevelopment. The issue cropped up after Congress corporator Santosh Shetty raised a query, wanting to know on what basis the civic body had declared 72 city buildings as dangerous. He also asked whether the NMMC had appointed the right agency, competent enough to carry out a proper survey before declaring a building as dangerous. In an article titled Ghost Building, carried on June 4, the ADC had pointed out that an Urdu medium school in Turbhe, which had already been torn down for redevelopment, had been erroneously included in the 2013 list of dangerous buildings. This happened in spite of the fact that, over one year ago, Navi Mumbai Mayor Sagar Naik had himself presided over the bhoomi pujan of a new structure being built on the same spot. It was also discovered that while last year, the list had 70 buildings, this year the num-
ber had gone up to 72, and the list was the same as that of last year with only two new names added to it. R.K. Mathpati, deputy municipal commissioner, antiencroachment, informed that the list was based on a visual survey conducted under the supervision of a junior engineer. “The report was based on a visual survey and did not include technical aspects like checking the RCC for structural faults,” said Mathpati. But members of the House were not satisfied with the reply and sought more clarifications from the deputy municipal commissioner on the entire issue. Sinnarkar added that the civic body had already warned the residents, through advertisements in newspapers, that the 72 buildings listed as dangerous could crash during the monsoon. “We have made people who are residing in these building aware of the dangers and have appealed to them to vacate the structures as per the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act 264 (1), (2) and (3). If they continue to reside there even after the warnings and something amiss happens during the monsoon, the civic body will not be responsible,” said Sinnarkar. But he acknowledged that there was a mistake on the part of the anti-encroachment and town planning department and said a fresh survey would be carried out in a week’s time and results of the same would be tabled at the standing committee meeting for further discussion. amit.srivastav@afternoondc.in

Aditya along with his son Suraj Pancholi, was spotted at Jiah’s funeral, but just when he was entering Jiah’s Juhu residence, his car rammed into a reporter’s tripod resulting in a serious scuffle between the two. It has to noted that Sooraj and Jiah were a couple for the last one year but were having troubles since the last few months caused by Jiah’s suspicion that Sooraj was two timing her.

If voting changed anything, they'd make it illegal. — Emma Goldman
Goodbye Ramrajya? W
e are approaching a most important anniversary on June 15 — the day Parliament passed the Right To Information Act (RTI) in 2005 and, in so doing, ushered in what we hoped would be an era of much greater transparency in government that would itself lead to a modern Ramrajya. It is true that it has wrought great change in our lives, not the least important being that we have the right to know. For if knowing and information is empowerment, then we would have to admit that our own government has, over six decades of Independence, tried its best to keep us barefoot and ignorant. At first, it can be honestly said that our maibaap felt that too much information would addle our brains and that governing and how it was being done was best confined to those who were doing it. Later, as corruption ballooned, it just made very good sense to invoke the Official Secrets Act and issues of National Security at every step. Finally, we had to fight for our RTI and we actually won. Since then, we have not looked back. Maybe we should have, for then we would have seen the genie of insecurity emerging from the awareness that is gradually dawning upon our ruling classes – that when it comes to them and their narrow ambitions, the RTI has been worse than the scythe wielded by the Grim Reaper. And now the worst has happened. The Chief Information Commission, through an order, has sought to bring political parties (the sheer temerity!) within the ambit of (horror!) the RTI Act and thus open them to public scrutiny. In other words, the public will be in a position to know about the monetary dealings of each political party, and will actually get a fair idea of who is being paid off by whom and for what. So what do they do through their legislators? They close ranks of course, and get ready to oppose it for all they are worth. Not just that, there is already talk of diluting the Act which would make all six parties likely to come within the ambit of RTI, actually answerable to citizens. Perish the thought! Google RTI Success Stories in India (as we did) and we came up with 5,82,000 links. That is how wide-ranging the impact has been on the country. Now, just because we would like to know exactly what makes political parties so powerful, and we would like them to be subject to RTI, we are in danger of everything slipping away. Ramrajya is a long way off.

HEN you write a column that is called ‘On the spot’ it can be very annoying when you sometimes just miss being on the spot. This is what happened to me in Istanbul. I was there, as you know if you read this column, a couple of weeks ago and staying in a hotel overlooking Thaksin Square. On my first day in the city I explored the square and the winding streets and narrow alleys that led downwards from it towards the Bosporus. In the square I stopped at pavement stalls selling posters and knickknacks. In a little jewellery shop I bought myself an evil eye bracelet and in a small café I ate delicious kebabs and drank cold, dry Turkish wine. And, then with others attending the conference I had come to attend I wandered down a street filled with restaurants, bars and shops selling Turkish sweets to an old building where in a room with large windows there was a reception. We drank more Turkish wine and ate mezze. So it was that I spent two peaceful and lovely days in Thaksin Square without realising for a moment that days after I left it would erupt in protests and violence that political commentators all over the world are already beginning to call a Turkish spring.

because it was once a cathedral that was converted into a mosque in Ottoman times and so it is best that it remains a museum. But, now on Fridays protesters gather outside and demand that it be converted back into a mosque.’ Luckily for humanity this place of worship that was built as the largest cathedral of its time by a Roman emperor was not destroyed by the Ottoman sultans. They simply plastered over the Christian frescoes and mosaics on its vaulted ceilings and covered the faces of angels with masks. If it is converted back into a mosque now what will happen? While I was in Istanbul I noticed some signs of creeping Islamisation. There were many more women wearing hijab than I remembered from when I was here two years ago although when I mentioned this to the Turkish women I met they said I may have seen Arab
The winter of discontent Did I sense the possibilities of this spring in the four days that I spent in Istanbul? Yes, I did and it was mostly from talking to women. I met a former bureaucrat who told me that she thought she had lost her job in government because she was not Islamic enough. She was an attractive, middle-aged woman who said she believed in God, just like most people did, but she did not think this prevented her from enjoying a glass of wine. The people who denied her a renewal of her government contract clearly did and according to her version of what happened she was told when she was being dismissed that it had been noticed that she publicly drank wine. She was not the only woman who sensed what many people described as ‘Erdogan’s insidious Islamisation’. The woman guide who showed me around the magnificent Agya Sofia said that there were attempts to turn it back into a mosque. ‘It has been a museum now since Ataturk’s time,’ she said ‘and it should stay a museum
ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh tourists and mistaken them for locals. While I was in Istanbul a ban on liquor being sold between 10 pm and 6 am was announced. This would have a direct effect on Turkey’s huge and very lucrative tourism industry. Turkey gets more than 30 million international tourists a year and Istanbul alone gets close to 13 million. This is a nightmare for traveling foreigners like myself, who was deterred from seeing many wonderful mosques and palaces by the long queues, but has helped Turkey’s economy grow enormously. The Turkish economy has done very well under Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But, what worries people is not just his Islamic streak but his tendency to be ruthlessly authoritarian. I
met a woman journalist while I was there who told me that when it came to controlling the media his administration now used subtler means than before. Instead of sending inconvenient journalists to prison they simply lose their jobs, she said. But, there are enough who have been sent to jail. The Erdogan government has a reputation for sending more journalists to jail than any other and this makes the media less critical of his grandiose plans than it may have been. Among them is a truly grandiose plan to build what is being called a ‘second Bosporus’ to link the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara.
Looking to the west What worries people even more are Erdogan’s alleged plans to remain in power after his second term as prime minister ends next year. I heard on my wanderings in Istanbul that he is considering becoming President and moving Turkey to an American style presidential form of government. So the protesters in Thaksin Square were not just protesting against the decision to turn a public park into a shopping mall or a mosque. What they were protesting against was a leader who seems to have allowed his decade in power to go to his head. Perhaps the protesters are really only a small majority, perhaps they are those of secular bent who do not represent the vast majority of Turkish people who are deeply religious and see no problem with Islamisation or an authoritarian ruler. But, as a visitor to one of the most beautiful cities in the world I have to say that it would be a great tragedy if Istanbul suddenly lost its bars and restaurants and if Islamisation caused monuments of great international importance to be turned into mosques. What I will say in Erdogan’s defence is that in the days I spent wandering about Thaksin Square I never sensed for a single moment that I was in a city in which repression lay under the surface in any deep way. There were no signs of repression that I detected at all nor were there signs of an eruption of public anger or I may have stayed on longer in Thaksin Square than I did. If there is going to be a long and hard Turkish spring we can only hope that it does not in any way ruin Istanbul which is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Awareness of the self that transcends the body I
n this situation, commitment to swadharma is not enough. Constant awareness of two other principles is necessary. One of them is: ‘I am not this feeble and mortal physical body; the body is only the outer covering.’ The other is: ‘I am the Self that is imperishable, indivisible and all-pervading.’ These two together constitute a whole philosophy of life. The Gita values this philosophy so much that it enunciates it at the very outset and only thereafter brings in the concept of swadharma. Some people wonder why such abstruse philosophical theorems are there at the very beginning. But I think that if there are any verses in the Gita whose place cannot at all be changed, then these are such verses. If this philosophy is imprinted on the mind, the practice of swadharma will not appear difficult. In fact, it will be difficult not to practise it. It is not difficult to comprehend that the Self is eternal and indivisible and the body is worthless and transient, as these are the truths. But we should reflect over them, ruminate constantly over them. We should train ourselves to belittle the body and exalt the Self. Look! This body is for ever changing, caught in the cycle of childhood, youth and old age. Modern scientists say that every
seven years it is renewed and not a drop of old blood remains. Our ancestors believed that this takes twelve years. That is why they prescribed a period of twelve years for study, penance, atonement of sins or wrongdoings etc. We often hear that mothers failed to recognise their own sons after years of separation. The body changes every moment, dies every moment. Is this body you? Twenty four hours a day its sewers operate, and despite indefatigable scavenging it remains unclean. Is this body you? No, the body is dirty; it is
MATTER & SPIRIT you who wash it. It gets ill; it is you who treat it with medicine. It fills three and a half cubits of space; you are free to roam in the whole of the cosmos. It changes endlessly; you observe those changes. It is open to death; you accept it. When the distinction between your body and yourself is so clear, why do you say that only that which relates to the body belongs to you? And why do you grieve for the death of the body? The Lord asks: “Is the destruction of the body a cause for grief?” The body is, in fact, like a garment we wear. We can put on a new garment as the old one fortunately gets worn out. Had one
and the same body stuck to the Self for ever, the Self would really have been in a sad plight? That would have stopped all growth, extinguished all joy and dimmed the illuminating power of knowledge and wisdom. Hence, perishing of the body is not a thing to grieve over. Had the Self been perishable, that would indeed have been a cause for grief. But the Self is imperishable. The eternal Self clothes itself in a succession of bodies. That is why it is utterly wrong to get attached to a particular body and its relations and grieve over their loss; and it is also wrong to consider some as kin and others as aliens. The universe is a beautifully woven whole. Were we to cut up the undivided Self, immanent in the whole universe, into bits of separate selves using the body as a pair of scissors like a child who willfully cuts a whole piece of cloth with a pair of scissors, would it not be the height of childish folly, and moreover, an act of extreme violence? It is really a pity that India, the land where Brahmavidya (the science of realising the Brahman) was born, is now teeming with innumerable incongruent groups and castes. We are so much afraid of death that one wonders whether such fear has any parallel anywhere else in the world. — Vinoba Bhave

It’s time for Dhoni to break his ‘maun vrat’!
THE ongoing crisis has further deepened in Indian cricket after the BCCI president, N. Srinivasan stepped aside due to spot and match fixing and has come to haunt the Indian Team captain M.S. Dhoni who has been charged for illegally acquiring 15 per cent stake in sports management firm Rhiti Sports Managment Pvt Ltd which also manages three other national team players—Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha. The revelations are akin to the incestuous culture that has come to define Indian cricket. Rhiti Sports who market the IPL Chennai Super King (CSK) franchise owned by alleged corrupt fixer Gurunath M. and the exBCCI chief N. Srinivasan involved in illegal betting exemplifies this point. I strongly feel that the Indian cricket has to be rescued from the present crisis and the conflict of interest must be tackled with iron hand and ruthlessly as the cricketing administration has failed to address this issue due to the in-built nepotism at every level of the game. The urgent need of the hour is that Dhoni must break his silence and come clean on the exact nature of his association with Rhiti Sports.
— Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai
TOP sportsmen earn money in millions of dollars and so has M.S. Dhoni who is India’s richest sportsman today. He has earned every bit of his penny through hard work and dedication and invested the same profitably in the same manner he plays his game which has benefited our country. Putting Dhoni’s earnings and business interest under the lens is unfair as legitimate business and the ongoing match fixing scandal
should not be mixed by people with vested interest. Dhoni has always played his cricket with a straight bat. Why would India’s top earning sportsmen indulge in unethical ways to earn his fortune when he is able to earn his fortunes in a legitimate manner? We must let the India skipper concentrate on his game as our country is playing an important tournament and here is wishing Dhoni the very best for the Champions trophy.

THE heady mixture of money and sex has turned the IPL tamasha into a gambling circus as seen from the present fixing scandal that has erupted like a volcano. The once pristine gentleman’s game has become a bookies’ paradise. The only way to bring the

For a judicious judiciary
AS per a report appearing in a leading English daily, the Union Law minister has said that the govt. must have a say in the appointment of judges. This is reminiscent of the days of early 1970s. At that time, the then PM, heading the govt. of the same Party and enjoying a clear majority, had floated the concept of committed judges. This simply meant that the judiciary must deliver the verdicts that are in consonance with the policies of the govt. in power. Perhaps, this thinking was prompted by the decisions of the apex court in Keshav Singh (1964) and Abolition of Privy Purses for the Erstwhile Princes (1970) cases.

BCCI should be dismantled and only past cricketers must take the charge. Since betting in horse-racing is legal, the same should made applicable to cricket as well. Perhaps this may help in avoiding scandals and scams like the present one. — Calicut Ramani, Sion
A FEW weeks ago, a South African colleague remarked to me, that the “IPL cricket matches have contributed immensely to enhancing the image of India abroad, as a sporting and modernising country”. With the exposure of “spot-fixing” and “match fixing”, that image now stands severely dented. Now, it has become a colossal shame. — Rajendra K. Aneja, Wadala
AS the coffers of the BCCI started filling, the arrogance, conceit and its bullying tactics too went up. The ego of the body and its constituent members bloated like a hyper inflated balloon. It brooked no nonsense from any other board. The ICC became a mere spectator and puppet in its hand bowing down to all their dictates. BCCI was the only one not to accept UDRS. The Board keeps harping that since it is a private body no one else will have any authority over it. Hence it conveniently refuses to come under the RTI act. If it is a private body how can it treat the whole country as its domain. For international and test matches the playing eleven is named as Team India. The money power and clout makes other boards submissive to its whims and fancies. — Jayanthy S. Maniam, Sion

End miseries faced by women! PREETI RATHI, the victim of a gruesome acid attack on a railway platform has passed away, her funeral pyre asking a lot of burning questions to society at large. Social commentators could do well to inquire why our society is enveloped with hate, anger and intolerance. The principles of humanity have taken a beating, and somehow we don’t subscribe to the ‘live and let live’ policy anymore. To my mind, apart from other reasons our hate ridden social and political scenario, has breathed a lot of intolerance into society. I appeal to our law enforcing agencies to hunt and hang the people behind Preeti’s death and ensure justice to her family. I hope that from the womb of her pyre, a rev-

bad breakup can be a silver lining on a dark cloud and the birth of your first child can teach you new things about life. From new careers and baby bumps to more self-confidence and visiting slums in Liberia to give you better perspective, the women we spoke to have all had truly defining moments. Take a look at what changed them.
Bundles of joy Medha, Manjiri and Pallavi all have one thing in common. All their defining moments came with the birth of their children. Artist Medha Rangnekar says, “Though both my sons, one a dentist and the other a restaurateur, have been the joys of my life and made me proud, I have always missed having a daughter. This desire was fulfilled in the form of my daughter-in-law who instead of ageing me has only made me feel younger. We have bonded on all levels and she has been one of my pillars of support by encouraging me to fulfill a long cherished dream Continued on pg 14 «

Continued from pg 13 « of showcasing my art on a larger platform and having my own art exhibition. I consider these new events to be truly life-changing.” Dr. Manjiri Patankar Puranik, founder of InstaSculpt, agrees that being a mother gives you a sense of fulfillment. She explains, “My children showering me with unconditional love and joy is unparalleled. My bonding with my children has grown every day and I am a better human being only because of my children. They are proud of their mother and encourage me to excel in all my endeavours. Being a doctor in a medical profession such as mine, sharing, caring and being emphatic towards the world is something I learnt from them.” Pallavi Bhoir, like Medha, also says that her life-changing moment was when her daughter, Krishna was born. “I went from a woman to being a full time mother and my daughter became my princess. I live for the beautiful feeling that I felt when it happened — it was definitely life-changing,” she tells us.
Careers that speak volumes Chef Nicole Gonsalves Pereira has an amazing job today. She is a corporate chef at Pico and she says that the one moment that changed it all for her was when she was promoted to senior sous chef at Rules Restaurant. “It’s London’s oldest and most prestigious restaurant! This was a great achievement for me as very few Asian female chefs have had the opportunity of enjoying this position in the restaurant’s kitchen,” she says. Advocate Minal Parab says that every moment your life presents certain changes, but you don’t realise them unless they are special. Her special moment came when she achieved a personal milestone that made her entire family proud. She says, “After three years of hard work, I became a lawyer in 2008. I went from Minal Parab to Advocate Minal Parab. It’s been the biggest change of my life and definitely the most enriching.” Career is also important to Soulflower CEO, Natasha Tuli, who says that a chance internet meeting with Amit Sarda, her husband, was her defining, life-changing moment. “I had just installed this social chat called ICQ when I was pinged by Amit. We didn’t have any common friends and would have not ever met if not for this chance encounter. Of course we never looked back and our partnership lead to the genesis of Soulflower. We both strayed from our respective careers into an entirely unknown, wonderful world of spreading aroma in

everyone's lives,” she explains. “I have worked in the tax field for almost five years. But, I always wanted to start something of my own,” says managing partner of Marryafriend.com, Sonal Khatri Somani. Just like Natasha, it was her husband who helped make it all happen. She says, “My husband convinced me to start my own business. Inspired by him and our relationship, I started the site Marryafriend.com, a portal where you can find yourself a like-minded life partner. Our togetherness and honesty towards each other made me understand how important it is to have a partner who knows you and understands you. Our portal is inspired by this. The support that my husband gives me has been an inspiration for me to achieve what I have with this website and now there is no looking back!”
Weighty issues Self-confidence is a precarious thing and often, not very easy to come by. PR consultant Satakshi Singh has had her fair share of confidence issues, but believes that everything in life happens for a good reason. “Eight years ago, I had weight issues which impacted my life. I had low self confidence and the fact that people kept taunting me for looking like an elephant de-motivated me so much that instead of doing something about it, I increasingly took refuge in food. Then one day, I discovered that I weighed close to 85 kilos. It took me a good two years to lose weight.” Today, she weighs a lot less than what she used to, but she still has a long way to go. That one defining moment that made her see that she needed to change has really helped her with her work and made her feel happy from within. For others in a similar situation, she says, “It’s not difficult to lose weight if you are determined, but it’s very difficult to maintain it. My advice to everyone who wants to lose weight is to be patient because every small effort that you make counts. Just take small steps. This experience has changed my life in a positive manner.”
Culture shoCks Not too many people have done what supermodel, psychologist and philanthropist, Anjhula Mya Singh Bais has. Her life-changing moment occurred on a trip to Liberia, where she went on a drug raid in the poor slums of Monrovia. “After meeting the deputy director of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) of Liberia, the Honourable Albert K. Chelley, he quizzed me on what I would do or say in a myriad of situations. He also timed me on a 50-yard dash and after teaching me how to handcuff, I went on a drug raid at night. It was complete with bullet proof vests. He believed in me and something changed in me. I saw people thrown to the ground, slapped, punched, prostitutes, coke, heroin, a ‘staged’ buy, lookouts — it was like the movies, but real.
I was saddened as a female and a Buddhist, but it has deepened my commitment to serve others to the best of my ability. I chanted under my breath for their happiness because these people have hopes and dreams too. But, they live in a country that suffocates it through poverty, corruption and lawlessness. They would rather die one death than 1,000 painful ones every day,” she explains, telling us that it made her realise that it’s important to be the change you want to see and of course, to say no to drugs.
an artist’s touCh Sandhya Gorthi, the director of Sanctum store, has an illustrious career that sees her travelling a lot. The one moment that made her life what it is today, is the month she got to spend with artist FN Souza (the founding member of the Progressive Artists’ Group of Bombay) in 2001. She explains, “Seeing Francis at work, going on walks with him and arguing with him, all made me see his innocence and sense of wonder at the rest of the cosmos. Ironically, despite his anti-organised religion stance, it was he who ignited in me a curiosity for spirituality, one that I have pursued and studied to this day. He was known as L’Enfant Terrible of the art scene, but to me he was truly a child of the universe.”
musiC for life Music helps you to cope through the porpoise of your life. And for several, music teaches them to move past their judgements and prejudices and create a broader horizon in their minds. This was the case with Pearl D’mello, a journalist by profession. According to her, it served as a lesson she learned for life. She says, “I had just entered my teens and listened to all the popular (read: pop) music artists of that time. My elder brother had a more advanced taste in music. He used to bring home CDs with interesting cover art. Out of curiosity, I started listening to his kind of music instead of just my own and, surprisingly, I liked it. It opened my mind to songs that were not part of mainstream music, which I probably wouldn’t have ever heard. How is this life-changing? It made me less judgemental about things different from what I’m used to and to give unusual things (and people) a fair chance.”
travelling to freedom Travelling gives many of us, not just a sense of joy, but a sense of purpose and freedom. Sneha Iyer, a media professional, found her winged delight of liberty through a lone excursion. Says Sneha, “Travelling alone was never a comfortable feeling for me, but 1,000kms did change my perspective towards it. Seven years ago, when I was just 16, I managed to travel from Mumbai to Bengaluru, a good 16 hours journey, all alone. It may not have been the bravest deed of my life, but it did make me a more fearless person. I’m now someone who is not lost or afraid of being left alone. Being brought up in a protective environment, this was the first achievement that changed me as a person. Eating alone, paying restaurant bills and taking care of my belongings were the little things that I did with a lot of pride. Thanks to that one journey, I now know that I can take care of myself and travel the country or the world without apprehensions.”
Celeb speak
“I think it was my recent illness. After suffering for almost a year, I emerged victorious because I started to think differently, look at life differently. I became more positive in my vision and started to introspect, which is a must.” — Aishwarya Sakhuja
“For me, the one incident that changed my life was when my dad passed away. I thought I would see him get old and I would get a chance to look after him. After his death I realised how pampered I was, what a great friend he was to me, how much I relied on him and how much I actually loved him. I don’t think I will ever get over that incident. It changed me for good and bad. The good is that it taught me to be responsible and to not take things for granted. The bad is that his death has left an emptiness in my heart.” — Sara Khan
“One thing that changed my life would be having a child. It opens your mind and heart and forever changes you for the better. It has made me more human, more patient, more understanding and more loving. I now understand what it means to love someone more than you love yourself.” — Roshni Chopra
“My TV character Sandhya changed my life. As the eldest daughter, it was my responsibility to share family duties. I started acting after my MBA. With God’s grace all went well, and I got incredible outcomes for my struggle and hard work.” — Deepika Singh

auren Gottlieb first caught our attention when she took center stage on So You Think You Can Dance Season 3. She made it to the final six and since then there has been no looking back for the dancing queen! And now, her love for dancing has brought her to India. After appearing in Remo D'Souza’s Any Body Can Dance, she is currently burning up the dance floor on celebrity dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa Season 6. We speak to her about the show, moving to India, learning Hindi and whether she’s joining Bollywood any time soon.
Bollywood dance is so wide that you can’t classify it as just one style of dancing. It’s a blend of different dance styles brought together. « THE TOP 5: SCARVES WE LOVE
treSSemmÉ Shampoo & coNditioNer Your hair gets frizzy during summer. Your hair gets frizzy during the monsoon. There’s really no winning over the next few months… or is there?! To be honest, the affordability of the Tressemmé Shampoo and Conditioner made me a little skeptical about how good the product would be — after all, the higher the price, the better the product, right? Not in this case. The shampoo needs to be used sparingly or it will dry out your hair, but if you use one wash with a small amount of shampoo, your hair stays soft and shiny. Used without the conditioner my hair was soft, but there was no noticeable difference. And then, I used it with the conditioner. It didn’t leave my hair limp (which most straightening shampoos do) and it did, in fact, give it a salon-like shine. And, the frizzy flyaway hair almost disappeared. I found that my hair didn’t even need to be blow dried to look like it was styled. However, more unmanageable hair it might need a little more product or maintenance. All in all, it delivers and is very affordable. price `160 (shampoo) and `80 (conditioner) where Major retail outlets Star rating ****

Our experience of the range is a mixed one. While the face wash is nice, the scrub is great for removing whiteheads and blackheads and leaves your face looking evenly toned. While for some people, the mask made no difference, my face looked bright and clean afterward. The pleasant strawberry smell is not too strong and my skin was not dry even after using the face wash, scrub and mask three times a week. But, the effects don’t last very long so you can expect your skin to go back to its normal state in a few hours. price Wash `145, Scrub `199 and Mask `199 where Major retail outlets rating ***

eaSy turbaN Turban’s don’t have to be complicated to look chic. Try this simple one on for size:
Step 1 Fold your scarf over from end to end in the shape of a triangle and place it on your head, with the pointed side hanging over your face as shown in the picture.
Step 2 Tie a knot at the top of your head to secure the scarf and then twist the ends tight. Neatly tuck them into the scarf towards the nape of your neck.
Step 3 Roll the pointed end of your scarf up and tuck it into the knot at the top of your head. Secure it with pins if the scarf is to smooth or if it doesn’t sit still on your head.

While the vibrant, semi-formal, peplum top and flowy boho maxi skirt are pretty, there’s just something about this outfit that doesn’t work well together. Maybe it’s the colours fighting for attention of the odd mix of fabrics. Better luck next time!
Most women would love to shave a few inches off their hips. Not Tisca. It seems that the actress isn’t content with her curves. Why else would she wear so many voluminous layers across her bottom? The outfit makes her look like a wonder... and we mean the Pyramids.
When will these stars realise that less is more! The outfit is demure and has a nice structure but the foil wrapped stuck on it randomly and the velvet and the sheer and the work on the neck kills whatever class the look orignally had. Nice makeup though.
Prachi Desai is a pretty girl who can get away with a few fashion flops. But this formal dress with neon highlights is cringe-worthy. The neon looks out of place on the dress and the belt cuts her off in the middle. The shoes should also be given back to the Kardashians.
It’s not that this outfit is a hit, it’s safe with a few fun elements. Which is all we’re hoping for these days. The blazer and matchy shoes are a little too much but the fit of her clothes is perfect and we like that her torn jeans and sling bag make her look laidback.

Step 2 Carefully knot the two ends at the nape of your neck and under the pointed end of the scarf. Make sure that the scarf hasn’t slipped back before the next step.

Want to change careers? first, read What We have to say I have been working in technology PR (Public Relations) for five years. Over the past year I have grown tired of my job. I think I should quit this stream altogether. As I have an engineering background, getting into technology PR was the most sensible thing to do, since I didn’t want to be an engineer. But, now I’m having second thoughts about this. I’ve not quit my job as yet because I live alone in Mumbai and have bills to pay. Even the quality of my work is suffering because I’m thoroughly fed up of it. Can you please suggest a sensible plan? — damini malhotra, colaba dear damini, In the field of public relations, it’s likely that things can get monotonous. But you’ve spent five years of your life in this career. Do you think it’ll be the right thing to quit the stream altogether after the years that you’ve invested in it? Especially, because of your monetary commitments? Starting from a scratch, that too when you don’t know what to do next, can backfire. Maybe you are just bored with ‘technology’ PR? Try looking for PR positions that deal with other segments such as lifestyle or hospitality. Even consumer technology is a bright option considering your technical background. So, before calling it quits, apply at a few other nontechnology PR companies. There are high chances that it’s just the technology bit that you are fed up of. Due to a high workload, our boss has set a temporary leave policy — only one person can go on leave at a time. To avoid fights, we as a team, informally decided to not take leave. But, one of our colleagues went on leave behind our backs. She is quite nice and usually, everyone likes her, but now there is anger brewing. We know we can’t complain, but is there anything else we can do? — Priya mulchandani, andheri dear Priya, The anger your team is feeling is understandable. But, we would urge all of you to be level-headed about this. Firstly, she has already gone on leave, so there’s nothing you can do about it now. So, instead of letting your focus get affected, you’ll should just concentrate on your work. Secondly, it doesn’t seem like she had time to talk to the team before she went on leave and vice versa. That suggests that it could have been a genuine emergency that she had to rush off for. And since you say that she is nice and everyone likes her, we think it is the most probable reason. Wait for her to come back and we are sure that she will provide a valid reason. In case she doesn’t, the best thing would be to just forget and move on. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

Hands of time
If you are in your 30s, chances are that your plate is full of responsibilities. Amid so much to do, are you forgetting your own parents? Priyanka Singh gives you pointers on balancing your life and taking care of your elders
A
If you are earning, make sure that you have a regular amount allocated for your parents’ needs. They might be dependent on their pension or savings and might not accept your money. But, in case of an emergency, you should have a good amount of money that you can bank on. Make this aspect clear before getting married and if you already are, you must discuss this with your spouse as well. If he has a problem with it, it depends on you whether you would still want to go ahead with it or not. At the end of the day, it’s money that you’re earning. If you aren’t working, you can save some from your household expenses. You need to figure out the financial aspect depending on your financial situation.
Doctor’s visits
emotional support
It’s not about taking the responsibility, but more about how much you care for them. Make a doctor’s visit a weekly ritual. Regular trips will keep you updated on their health and will also keep you in the loop of when their doctor’s appointments are scheduled. If it’s a regular check up, then you can let them go alone. After all, they should also be able to visit the doctor unaccompanied in case of an emergency. If you are in another city, put technology to good use; teach your parents how to use Skype. At least, you’ll be able to see them frequently. Parents have this bad habit of underplaying their illness. By looking at their faces, you’ll probably know if something is wrong and if you need to visit them.
The mentality of most Indian parents is such that if you visit them too often, they will start thinking there is something wrong with your marriage. They’ll start worrying that you’re unhappy with your partner. If you plan to visit them often, coax your husband to tag along occasionally. This way they’ll know everything is okay. More than you being there, it’s the emotional support that they need. They should know that they have someone to talk to. While you have your set of friends and extended social circle, in old age, company becomes a luxury. Speak to them often. They’ll be more than happy with that.
First aiD >> Your parents don’t have as many friends as you. So, ensure that they know they can always talk to you

commercial that’s been airing frequently shows a mother nagging her son about how he doesn’t call her often. The son, in turn, retorts with the classic, I-don’thave-time. Replace the son with a daughter in her 30s and the situation goes further downhill. If you are an Indian woman in your 30s, it’s likely that you are married, have a child or two and are tackling a job, in-laws and marital life. If not married, then you’re balancing your personal and professional life and contributing to your family. While you are busy dealing with such daunting tasks, your parents are getting older. If you are a responsible daughter, you won’t let them be on their own. So, how do you take care of your parents while dealing with your own life? Here are a few tips:
No matter where they stay, whether alone or with family, make sure that you make them undergo a first aid course. In several cases, first aid given in the nick of time has saved many lives. Both your parents must know what to do in case of an emergency. Also, make sure that they have a nearby hospital’s number handy.
You getting olDer It’s not just your parents who are getting older, you are as well. Running errands three times a day didn’t feel like a task five years ago, but it does now. In order to take care of your responsibilities and also support your parents, you need to take care of yourself. So, take time out for yourself. Exercise, eat well and go for a physical examination once a year. Only if you take care of yourself, will you be able to take care of others.

So, you will come? I really want you to meet Dev! Yes! I got a new dress that I can’t wait to wear!
Many relationships have gone sour because the woman earns more than the man and eventually, starts flaunting the same. Priyanka Singh tells you how you can skip the ego issues

n the days of our parents and grandparents, wives didn’t have to worry too much about ego clashes over finances. Husbands were the prime earning members of the family and women used to spend their time taking care of the children and chores. As times changed and equality emerged, the financial dynamics of a relationship changed too. It was a rarity a few years ago when the woman used to earn more than the man. But, with each passing year, this statement becomes less true and this has often been the prime cause for many relationships to fall apart. The reason behind this is your man’s gigantic ego. If you are a woman in such an undesirable situation, there are few things that you can try to keep your love boat afloat.

I have no idea why he did it and to be honest, I don’t think he knows why either.

TV TATTLES MY MOMMIE DEAREST
At the auditions of DID Super Moms, Farah was taken back to her younger days. She spoke at length about how her parents were instrumental in her pursuing a career in Bollywood. “Had it not been for my parents, I would have definitely gotten married at the age of 21. At that time, most of my friends were getting married once we were barely out of college. I too, had planned on getting married after turning 21, but it was my parents who asked me to concentrate on building a career as well. Seeing these young mothers makes me think that had I not gotten into Bollywood, I too would have been happily married and had kids by the time I was in my twenties,” said Farah. Watch Farah Khan as she judges DID Super Moms along with Marzi Pestonji every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm, only on Zee TV!
Actor Rahul Sharma who hails from a small town near Dausa got his big break from writer/ producer Raakesh Paswan in ‘Ek Ghar Banaunga’ on Star Plus, and here, he speaks about his life and career journey. By Sandeep Hattangadi
What are the shows you have done?: ‘Kahani Chandrakanta Ki, ‘Teri Meri Lovestory’ (movie) and my current show ‘Ek Ghar Banaunga’; this is my launch, a major show for me so I’ll count this as my first.
Please tell us something about your background. I belong to a small town, Dausa, It is the second smallest town in Rajasthan. I have completed my graduation and BSc. from there. Even my father has his business there.
In your school and college, were you a good student? Were you drawn to participating in cultural activities in school and college? I was bad in studies till 9th Std but after that I was somewhere between top and average. I scored between 70 to 80 per cent. Wherein cultural activities are concerned I had just done a small Sanskrit play in 9th Std and had just one dialogue in it. No one has ever considered me a good student. My school had no scope for cultural activities so I never got a platform either.
How was the struggle period for you when you came to Mumbai? It was very bad and difficult. When I came to Mumbai I shared a living space with my friend. I was an introvert and shy and my small town culture showed up. I was not even aware of Mumbai culture
ROCKING SHOW
at all. I didn’t know how to speak English but I was confident about my acting skills. In Jaipur I had done an acting workshop and even made some friends so I contacted them and got some contacts from them. Some I searched myself. Went for so many auditions but no proper response; it was a sad phase and it was difficult to hold myself at that moment. After 8 to 9 months I got a Vodafone print ad. After 300 auditions I got a Tata Docomo ad.
When you look back now, how do you feel? Not much of a difference, but yes people who had no time to talk to me, I receive calls from them now. This is the initial stage of my struggle, there is lot more to come. Let’s see what lies in stock for me. One thing that I notice is the change in today’s generation. People just forget what they are while showing what they want to be. They are just not themselves and I feel how ever much you achieve in life you should never change and if you do it should be only as much as the time and situation demands at that moment or else you end up losing your existence.
What do you like/dislike about daily soaps? I like the variations in acting. In just one day you get to enact so many emotions and you get a chance to grow as an actor. I only dislike one thing in daily soaps, that is lack of personal space, even at emergency times it becomes difficult to adjust.
MTV Splitsvilla gets hot as hell with its new Hotness Quotient task as this time the boys will flaunt a raw sex appeal by showing off their ‘Hot Abs’ to the audience. Sexy siren, Sherlyn Chopra has a hearty laugh while the boys vote among themselves by hitting raw eggs on the ones with worst abs. The one with the well-chiseled abs wins the Hotness Quotient task. The King and Queen show their mean side to the fellow Splitsvillians by taking their powers too literally and churning loads of gossip against them. The last few minutes will take everyone by surprise as Nikhil will introduce two new contestants to the game. What will happen next? How is your equation with Ishita, your co-star from the show? Do you mingle with her a lot off-screen? It is very good. From the very first day we vibed well with each other as if we knew each other since long. While shooting I have good chemistry with her. We are contrast in nature but jell quite well. Right now no time to spend off screen as we are busy with shoots and hectic schedules. When we get time we just want to sleep. But whenever we get time and it is possible we all go out and make ‘masti’. How was your interaction with Rakesh Paswan? It is very good. He is a gem of a person and writer. He is like an overall package. He is just too good at understanding the exact emotion that is required. He treats me like his own family. He is good hearted, genuine, down to earth and innocent person. Simple but very talented person What is your style mantra off the screen? Jeans and t-shirt. They are cool and comfortable.
Your favourite actor, actress, films? Tom Hanks, Dilipji. Deepika Padukone. I can’t actually compare anyone. All actors are idols for me. All actors are good in terms of their performance and qualities and I can learn from all of them. I love action and romantic movies.

STARDOM EXPERIENCE
Actor Jay Soni gained recognition from ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ but with ’Sanskar’ he is getting different kind of fame. Recently, when he stepped out of his gym a lady bumped into him and offered him her daughter's hand. She seemed to be a lady from a well to do family and she was very serious about fixing up his meeting with her daughter. She openly asked him that she wants him as his son-in-law. His next door boy image is enhanced. He is playing Jaikishan Karsandas Vaishnav in the Swapna Waghmare Joshi's ‘Sanskar’ and when he shot abroad in New York there also he came across lot of people who recognised him and asked for photographs and autographs.
SUPERDANCER LAUDED
Salman Yusuff Khan became a sensation when he won ‘Dance India Dance’ and went on to floor the audience with his performance in ‘ABCD’. Since then there was no looking back for SYK . The choreographer turned actor was estatic when he recently got a compliment from none other than Ranbir Kapoor. Consolidated Revenues for the quarter grew by 23% YoY but were down by 14.4% QoQ at Rs. 177 crore. Sales were below expectations due to trial runs and testing made at the Vietnam plant and some maintenance issues at the Indian plant. In addition, production at Vietnam plant also got affected by 10 - 12 days due to Chinese New year holidays. Vietnam plant has re-gained operations from the end of April 2013. Company would be adding another 5000 MT capacity by Sep 2013 in Vietnam taking the total capacity to 15000 MT. For FY14E, management expects to produce 6500 MT at the Vietnam plant. CCL operates a 3000 MT plant in Switzerland where it adds value addition to the products. Operations from this unit have been lackluster during the quarter since the Swiss government has imposed additional duty. EBIDTA margins have remained flattish QoQ at 20.8% (despite high power cost) as the company was able to stock up beans when the prices were lower. Coffee prices have remained stable during the quarter. PAT was lower by 25% YoY at Rs. 10.9 crore due to higher taxes (39% of PBT) during the quarter. Management expects this to be lower in FY14 since Vietnam would start making profits in FY14E. Valuation & Recommendation: Current quarter results were below our expectations. Though sales have got affected due to maintenance issues we believe this is a temporary issue and would be resolved in the coming quarters. Margins however have grown 100 bps in FY13 to 19.2% and we believe these are sustainable with the company adding superior quality products into the portfolio. First quarter is a seasonally weak quarter for the company; however with increase in capacities we can see good growth in YoY numbers. The stock has corrected post its Q4FY13 results and at CMP it is trading at 5.6x its FY14E earnings which look attractive. We continue to be positive on the stock and maintain BUY rating; however has reduced our target price to Rs. 375 due to lower Q4FY13 performance
Motilal Oswal calls a ‘Buy’ on BATA CMP: Rs. 865
Target Rs. 975
Massive restructuring places Bata on a strong footing: Bata scripted a successful turnaround story in 2005, post three consecutive years of losses. Key initiatives were: 1) revamp of retail operations from CY05-12 by opening 718 new large format stores, remodeling of 296 stores and closure of 524 cash - drain stores, 2) extended working hours and keeping stores open on Sundays lead to sales improvement, 3) drastic reduction in employee headcount (9,631 in CY05 to 5,162 in CY12) by providing voluntary retirement and option to move to K Stores format and 4) outsourcing labor-intensive operations to prune costs. Valuation and view: We estimate Bata’s revenue would increase by ~17% and net profit by ~22.5% over CY12-15E. It has a strong balance sheet, with cash of INR 1.9b and healthy return ratios of 27% RoE and 39% RoCE in CY12. With limited capex of INR 2b over the next three years, we believe the company will generate free cash flow in excess of INR 5.9b over CY1315E. All these factors make a strong case for re-rating. At CMP of INR 811, Bata trades at a PE of 26.4x/20.8x/16.5x CY13E/14E/15E EPS. We value the stock at 25x CY14E EPS and arrive at a target price of INR 975, with a Buy rating.
Prabhudas Lilladher calls a ‘Buy’ on DLF CMP: Rs. 199
Target Rs. 234
Results disappoint: Post an extremely dismal Q3FY13, revenues witnessed an increase of 70% QoQ to Rs 22.2bn; however, well below expectations. As per the company, the new accounting guidelines, which calls for revenue recognition after 25% of the budgeted construction cost is incurred on the project, resulted in lower revenue recognition to the extent of Rs 3.2bn for the quarter. Further, margins were also low at 32.6% although no cost escalations were built-in this quarter. This was again on account of the accounting guidelines, coupled with old ‘low margin’ projects coming in for recognition. The company reported a loss of Rs 42m at the net level. However, adjustment for an exceptional item resulted in profit of Rs 288m. Our View & Valuations: Although the company has a clear plan towards achieving its sales targets as well as debt reduction, both these are dependent on 1) an impending court case and 2) culmination of non-core asset sale transactions. Hence, for the interim, we are reducing our rating from BUY to ‘Accumulate’ and would take a re-look when atleast one of the two events pans out in the right direction. We revise our target price to Rs 234.

Penalises promoters and directors for failing to comply with minimum public holding norms. Freezes voting rights and corporate benefits; bans them from dealings in shares and from holding any new position on boards of listed entities
By A Business Reporter
T
aking a strong position against companies which failed to achieve minimum 25 % public holding, market regulator Sebi says it had sent as many as 191 reminders to these firms in the runup to the deadline. In these reminders, which began in November 2012 and continued till April this year, the companies were asked to initiate steps to meet the requirement or be ready for penal actions in the event of non-compliance within stipulated time. Cracking the whip on the promoters and directors of 105 private sector companies that failed to at-
tain minimum 25 per cent public holding by June 3, Sebi late last night barred them from dealings in shares and from holding any new position on boards of listed entities. Besides, Sebi also ordered freezing the voting rights and corporate benefits of promoters of these companies, in proportion of their noncompliance to the minimum public holding norms that require at least one-fourth of the share capital to be held by the non-promoter public shareholders. The other possible actions that Sebi might take against these companies include moving their shares to trade-to-trade segment, excluding them from futures and options trade, monetary penalties
under adjudication proceedings, initiation of criminal case by way of prosecution and other actions, as may be deemed appropriate at a later stage. Sebi said a total of 105 companies failed to meet the norms within the stipulated deadline of June 3. These included 72 companies whose shares are actively traded on the stock market. The shares of 33 other companies are currently suspended for various reasons. The companies whose promoters and directors face the prohibitory orders, which came into effect yesterday, include Adani Ports, BGR Energy Systems, Essar Ports, Omaxe, Plethico Pharmaceuticals and Tata Teleservices.
Slower Demand Growth To Hit Power Generators 7 GW aggressively bid power projects likely to be unviable, says Crisil Research By A Business Reporter
R
eturns of competitively bid power generation projects will be under pressure on account of slowing power demand growth and aggressive bidding, believes Crisil Research. According to it “Over the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17), power demand growth is expected to be tepid at 6.2 per cent due to slowing demand growth from the industrial and commercial segments on account of muted GDP
growth. This is despite significant latent demand, translating to a healthy 10 per cent CAGR for the domestic segment, and strong substitution demand, arising on account of gradual shift to grid power from diesel-based generation.” Incidentally, based on the availability of domestic coal and increased need to use high cost imported coal a levelised tariff of close to Rs. 3.1 per unit is necessary to make healthy return on equity of 16%. However 18 GW domestic coal based projects bid below Rs 3.1 per unit, and are likely to see severe
pressure on their profitability as per existing PPAs. Of these, 7 GW are at significantly high risk of being unviable due to aggressive bidding with tariffs below Rs 2.9 per unit. In a bid to make these viable, under the cost plus mechanism, the Government has asked the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) to suggest a mechanism to compensate competitively bid projects for higher cost of imported coal. Returns of these projects dependant upon availability and magnitude of tariff revision.

IIFL Dynamic Bond Fund NFO Opens Today By A Business Reporter
I
BUSINESS
IFL Mutual Fund has announces its new offering of an openended Income Scheme—IIFL Dynamic Bond Fund (‘Scheme’), with an objective to generate income and long term gains by investing in a range of debt and money market instruments of various maturities. The scheme which opens today and will close on June 17, seeks to flexibly manage its investment across the maturity spectrum with a view to optimize the risk return proposition for the investors. The
asset allocation will be in Debt Market Instruments and/or Money Market Instruments to the extent of 100%. Says Gopinath Natarajan, CEO, IIFL AMC, “With the current macroeconomic scenario giving more space to RBI for monetary easing measures, we are pleased to offer an investment opportunity to investors to benefit from current scenario of falling yields but also aim to optimize returns in the long term by flexibly allocating assets across category of instruments and maturities.”
The concept for the Midyan Gas Processing Facilities Project is to collect gas and process it in a modular gas plant, and export treated gas to a proposed power plant in a location approximately 90 km from Midyan. The scope of the contract includes project management, detailed engineering, procurement, supply, fabrication, manufacturing, inspection, transportation, construction, installation, testing, mechanical completion, pre- commissioning, commissioning assistance including performance testing. In the past, L&T has worked for establishing onshore gas processing complexes for Reliance Industries Limited at Kakinada, Cairn Energy at Barmer and gas treatment projects at Uran and Hazira for ONGC. CAPD ministry said that state is in the process of replacing old orchards and introducing insurance schemes for farmers
S
RINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir earns around Rs.4,000 crore annually from horticulture activities as fruit production in the state crossed 2.2 million metric tonnes last year, Minister for CAPD, Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan said. “Horticulture industry is the backbone of the economy of the state. It gives annual income of Rs.4,000 crore to the state,” Ramzan said addressing an awareness camp for farmers at Handwara, 85 km from here, in Kupwara district yesterday. He said 55 per cent of the
total land is under orchards, with fruit production touching 2.2 million metric tonnes last year. “The orchardists of Kashmir are experts in fruit industry but there is a need to make them aware about the new challenges in the industry,” Ramzan said. He also highlighted the need for introduction of insurance schemes for orchards and installation of juice plants for ‘C’ grade fruit. Minister for Horticulture Raman Bhalla, in his address, said, “The government intends to introduce several
new schemes to rejuvenate horticulture industry in the state”. He said the process for replacement of old orchards by high density plants have already been started in all parts of the state and have shown good results, with increase in fruit production. Nurseries are also being accredited to maintain the quality of plant material, he said. The plant protection machinery, which includes farm tractors, irrigation pumps and major power sprayers, are being provided to the orchardists at a subSRINAGAR: A boatman collecting weeds from Dal Lake on World Environment Day in Srinagar, on Wednesday. sidy, Bhalla added.
NCTC should not be given unbridled powers: Siddaramaiah N EW DELHI: Voicing reservations over the full-fledged operationalisation of the ambitious NCTC, Congress-ruled Karnataka today said the body should not be given “unbridled powers”. Newly-appointed Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also said that Naxal movement is “definitely trying to disturb” the security situation in his state. “Some safeguards are necessary before setting up NCTC so that it is not given unbridled powers to encroach upon states’ domain,” Siddaramaiah said in his speech during the CM’s internal security conference convened by the Ministry of Home Affairs here.
“As envisaged by the Union government, the National Counter-Terrorism Centre will have to involve multi-dimensional intelligence gathering and an action planning agency. Earlier efforts of containing terrorist activities by the existing organisation for intelligence networking have proved inadequate and ineffective. “In principle, the government of Karnataka has recognised the importance of data and intelligence sharing, planning of anti-terrorist activities including activities that are aimed at preventing, disabling or even tackling a terrorist attack in progress and the need for coordination between state and central agencies and sometimes
police of other states and even international agencies,” he said. The CM said Naxal activities are “expanding” in the state “albeit slowly” and hence Karnataka should be categorised as a Left Wing Extremism affected state. “As I have earlier said, the Naxal movement is definitely trying to disturb our state. I, therefore urge the union government to declare this as a Naxal affected state and provide central assistance by funding and imparting special training to our personnel. Alternatively, assistance may be extended for undertaking preventive measures so that the Naxal movement does not make inroads into the state,” he said. —PTI

They have not played a limited over international outside the sub-continent in the last 15 months but the two big wins in their practice matches against Sri Lanka in Birmingham and Australia in Cardiff will give the Indian team management a fair idea of the conditions to confront. India will also look to put behind them the recent spot-fixing scandal surrounding the IPL. Although history never counts in international cricket, India have a good record against South Africa in the Champions Trophy. India lead 2-0 in head-to-head having won by 95 runs at Nairobi's Gymkhana ground on October 13, 2000 and by 10 runs at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium on September 25, 2002. With two out of the four battlehardened teams qualifying for the semifinals, all matches in group B are expected to be closely-fought affairs. Except Pakistan, India, South Africa and the West Indies have won the Champions Trophy at least once each and hence more than just pride will be at stake in the last edition of the tournament that began as the Mini World Cup in Dhaka in 1998. South Africa also arrive with a lot of reputation to protect. They are the world's No. 1 Test team but
The Indian team during their warm up match against Australia. their ODI fortunes have been scratchy and it showed during the one-off warm-up game they played against a talented Pakistani attack on Monday. At The Oval, South Africa lost by six wickets and the defeat exposed the chinks in a batting lineup without two solid customers, Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith. Most captains have pooh-poohed their defeats in the practice games. The 15-a-side, bat and field 11 hybrid concept may be good for practice but considerably waters down the competitive edge of a real contest. South African skipper AB De Villiers dismissed the Oval defeat
saying: "It's not about the result, it's about what you get out of it. I am sure each guy will stand up when the time is right." That time will come tomorrow and India will be the first big hurdle. Fresh from the T20 Indian Premier League, most Indian players are quickly trying to adjust to the 50over variety. It's been a test for application and temperament and if the results in the two warm-up games are anything to go by, the feedback is mixed. When Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped out of Indian shores he said this Champions Trophy will be a test for the team's junior boys.
29 Dhoni continues to keep mum on recent controversies CARDIFF: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni continued to maintain a stoic silence on the IPL spot-fixing scandal and also showed no willingness to give his version in the 'conflict of interest' controversy over him having stakes in a sports management company which handles him. Asked if there are any distraction going into the Champions Trophy in the wake of recent controversies surrounding Indian cricket and the captain himself, Dhoni smartly dodged the query. "I think these are all the stuff that we're not even thinking about or does not even cross our minds. What we are really looking forward to is the challenge," Dhoni said. "This is the first time we'll be playing under the new set of rules outside India, and we need to adapt quickly and see how our boys are reacting... So that's what we are looking forward to," he added. Dhoni has come under sharp attack from some former cricketers for his alleged conflict of interest for having stakes in Rhiti Sports, which handles him and three of his Indian teammates. Dhoni found himself in a controversy when it came to light that he had 15 per cent stake in Rhiti Sports, which also manages Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha, besides the Indian captain. Prior to the Indian team's departure for England, Dhoni was asked questions about the spot-fixing scandal, but he answered none of them in a press conference in Mumbai.

An Afghan’s dream of playing
in the World Cup You were the first Afghan to play football outside your country. How was your entire experience of playing in the I League? It has been a great experience as I am the first Afghan player to play outside the country. At first, I didn’t know much about the league in India. I thought it wasn’t as good as the other leagues in South East Asia but when I came here all my doubts were cleared.
How did the journey from Kabul to Mumbai take place and how were you spotted by Mumbai FC? In 2010, I came here with a Kabul team and we played some friendly matches in Mumbai. Yusuf Ansari, the Air India goalkeeping coach noticed me and called me for trials. But due to technical reasons I couldn’t play that year. The next year, he approached Mumbai FC coach Khalid Jamil and I signed a contract with them.
You recently won the Fans Player of the Year Award. Was this one of your biggest achievements in India and in your career? This is the biggest achievement of my entire football career. In my second year of the I League and I won the ‘Fans Player of the Year’ award and now I realise how much the Indian people and the fans love me. I helped my team fight relegation but this year we are in a good position. This is the best season of my life in my career.
playing in my house or with my neighbours on the streets. When in 2005, I was selected for the national team, I wasn’t so serious then. Later, I realised what is the actual value of a national team player. With leading the country, I feel that the Almighty has given me everything I need.
Kabul’s lone stadium was used for executions by the Taliban. After their exit, what all has changed in the Olympic Stadium in the nation’s capital? That time people knew that the stadium wasn’t being used to play football. They were killing everyone there. But after they left, everything has changed. Earlier, people were scared to step foot on that ground because they were scared of the rulers. Now we have the FIFA Goal projects in the country, where the international federation will build stadiums for us.
What dreams do you have for Afghanistan? My dream for Afghanistan is that I play in the World Cup. It may not happen in 2018 but definitely in 2022, we should play. It’s my dream to play the World Cup and I am sure Afghanistan will qualify for the World Cup.
What is your federation doing for its team in its build up for the World Cup? AFC is supporting football from 2005. They are focusing on how to build a strong national team. They are bringing players back to their home country from around the world. They are now giving salary to players and we have been playing a number of friendly matches. Our main target is the 2018 World Cup.
INTERVIEW
Afghanistan has reached their best FIFA rankings of 139. Apparently, your country is rated higher than India. From being ranking 200 in 2004 to 139 in 2013, what has sparked the development of football in the war locked country? In the last five years, we saw how the Afghanistan Football Federation is improving every day. As a proud captain of Afghanistan, we have crossed all records, whether it is the FIFA ranking or breaking in among the top 20 countries in Asia. This is the beginning and it’s the start and in two to three years time, we will be a strong contender in every tournament we participate.
As a kid did you always want to play football as the Taliban regime had banned sports in the country? As a kid and during the Taliban reign, no one imagined that the Afghan national team would climb so high. No one was thinking about sports. The only thing on their minds was ‘fighting’ and how do we survive. They may not have supported sports, but the Taliban loved football. After the Taliban exit, football took a dramatic leap upwards. Now everyone wants to play football. Parents dream of seeing their boys playing for the Afghanistan team. During your younger days, did you secretly practice somewhere and tell us about the journey in eventually leading the Afghanistan team? When I was six to seven years, I never dreamt that I would play football one day and go on to represent the country. I started
Along with football, cricket has taken the fancy of many Afghans. How is the most popular game in India shaping up? Cricket is also popular in Afghanistan after football. It is very easy to qualify for the World Cup because there are only 1012 countries playing the game. On the contrary, it is very difficult to qualify for the football World Cup, because there are so many countries playing the game.
Afghanistan reaching the SAFF Cup finals in 2011 was one of your biggest achievements. You team received great away support. What kind of experience was that for you? Earlier, teams felt it was easy to defeat us and could easily earn three points. But of late, everyone is planning on how to beat us. In this SAFF Cup no one thought that Afghanistan would reach the final but due to our hard work, it was like a dream coming true for all the players and the entire country were waiting for such a moment. One man brought all Afghan fans for free to India in a plane. With this you can see how passionate we are about the game.
How has been you experience staying in India and playing with different teams and travelling to different places? It has been great. I am enjoying every second of my playing career here. I never felt for a second that I am out of my own country. In I League, to come, play and perform and to get famous with huge crowds cheering you feel great.

JELENA FAILS TO SOLVE PROBLEM CALLED MARIA SPORTS
P
ARIS: Maria Sharapova rarely gets stung in Grand Slam matches, especially when she’s fit, so after Jelena Jankovic hung a 60 bagel on her in the first set of the their quarterfinal clash, there was a possibility that she was so off her form that she would go away quietly in two sets. But that’s just not in the defending champion’s nature. In yet another remarkable performance from the world No. 2, Sharapova dug deep, rediscovered her Grand Slam-winning form and came away with a 0-6, 64, 6-3 victory and clawed her way into the semi-finals where she will meet Victoria Azarenka. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic scored a 6-3, 7-6(5), 7-5 win against Tommy Haas in the Roland Garros quarter-finals on Wednesday in Paris. Djokovic will face Rafael Nadal for a place in the final. Nadal outclassed 9th seed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.
I-League teams set for rebellion By Neil Joshi
M
UMBAI: The lack of clarity or rather the difference between the I-League football teams and the All India Football Federation with respect to IMG-Reliance mooted league has reached new heights with all the first division I League clubs refusing to loan any players for the new league. The Indian Professional Football Clubs Association (IPFCA) which was started last year blankly refused a three month window during the I League seeking reason for the new league, which would run parallel to the I-League. Thirteen I -League teams met in Mumbai on Wednesday although Sporting Clube de Goa
was absent, the club wholly supported in absentia the decision of the IPFCA. Two newly promoted clubs Rangdajed United and Mohammedan Sporting and two newly inducted clubs – Bangalore based JSW and Mumbai Tigers - favoured that the I- League structure should maintain the status quo and should not do away with the home and away format, a structure which is adopted by most of the European leagues. The meeting which was held under the chairmanship of Raj Gomes, who also represented Salgaocar Football Club mentioned that the clubs should be taken into confidence when any decision regarding alteration of the format of
India’s premier club tournament is taken. They also opposed the shortening of the League and go the ‘conference’ way or the zonal way which is prevalent in the Major League Soccer in the United States. Chirag Tanna, Head Operations, Pune FC said the three month tournament would not help better the grassroot game . “We have decided that we will not allow any players to play in the league. We won’t employ any players either who play the league. I don’t know how a bunch of players who are retired or on the verge of retirement can make a successful league. The AIFF never approached any of the clubs on what was our opinion about the league.”
Djokovic controlled the 30minute first set. He broke Haas in the seventh game with a forehand winner down the line and broke the German again in the ninth game with another forehand winner to clinch the opening set. The Serb dictated the baseline rallies, hitting 14 winners to just three from Haas. Nadal is on a quest to become the first man in history to win the same Grand Slam trophy eight times. He has a staggering 56-1 record at the Paris major, with his lone defeat coming at the hands of Robin Soderling in the 2009 fourth round. Former World No. 1 Jankovic played a beautiful and consistent first set. She was smart, hitting the ball deep and keeping her one-time rival from the juniors off balance. It was also clear that Sharapova was way off her game as she committed 20 unforced errors in the set. When the Russian stood up from her chair to begin the second, she
31
had already put the first set behind her and off she took, battering the Serb with big forehands, taking big cuts at Jankovic’s second service and, despite being a good deal slower than her foe, hustling after every ball to coax the latter into errors. Jankovic managed to come back from a 1-5 deficit in the set to 4-5, but Sharapova served big and held on to the win the set. 2008 semifinalist Jankovic, who has been playing very well during the past three months, refused to go away however and got off to a 3-2 lead on service. Victoria Azarenka has always been the sort of player you would want on your side in a fight. Her appetite for victory got her through a lengthy last-eight encounter with former doubles partner Maria Kirilenko 7-6(3), 6-2, meaning she will become the first woman ever to fly the Belarus flag in the final four at the French Open. She also completed her personal Grand Slam semi-final set, as this was the only major where she had fallen short.
IPL-style football league could see Beckham, Raul in action
N
EW DELHI: There is a possibility that the franchisebased football tournament, to be jointly organised by the AIFF and its commercial partner IMGReliance early next year, could see retired stars such as David Beckham and Raul Gonzalez in action. According to a British website, Sports Management Agency IMG is trying to recruit recently retired stars like Beckham, his former England teammate Michael Owen and former Spain captain Raul
Gonzalez to help boost the profile of the venture. However, no AIFF official was willing to confirm the development when asked about it. “I have only heard about it, so I cannot confirm you anything as of now,” a top All India Football Federation official told PTI. Having being granted a window from January 15 to March 15 next year, the IPL-style football tournament will feature eight franchises with a squad of 25 players each to play a series of matches.
Raj Kundra quizzed in spot-fixing scam N
India
South Africa To be played at: at Cardiff Time: 15:00 Hours
EW DELHI: Rajasthan Royals owner Raj Kundra and his business partner-friend Umesh Goenka were questioned for several hours today in connection with the IPL spot-fixing scandal following the claims made by a cricketer and to know about the ownership pattern of the team. A senior Delhi Police official refused to clear the air on Kundra, who said he owns 11.7 per cent stake in Rajasthan Royals, whether he is a “suspect or complainant”, stating he was an “important person” needed for questioning. The questioning of both Kundra and Goenka began around 10 am and continued till late in the evening. Sources said the name of Goenka, with whom Kundra owns a company dealing in steel business,
came during the recording of statement of Rajasthan Royal player Sidharth Trivedi, a prosecution witness in the case. In his statement recorded before a magistrate, sources said, Trivedi claimed that Goenka approached him and sought details about the cricket pitch in Ahmedabad and details about team formations. According to police sources, Kundra was called over phone to appear before investigators who wanted to ask about the ownership details of Rajasthan Royals. “Kundra told police that he owned 11.7 per cent while Suresh Chelaram, co-brother of Lalit Modi owned 43 per cent and Manoj Badale has 34 per cent. Rupert Murdoch’s son Lalchan Murdoch also has stake in the team,” a senior po-
lice official said. Kundra, a British national, has 42 per cent stake in the steel business with Goenka who has 16 per cent shares in the firm, they said. “Kundra did not have much to say about the players. Whenwe told him that as the owner, he has to ensure that players do not get in touch with unscrupulous elements as per BCCI instructions, he said the cricketers were adults and many times they took guests inside hotels saying they were personal friends,” the official said. Asked whether they were treating Kundra as a suspect, the official said, “We are neutral about him now. We are interrogating him.” “Goenka was close to Kundra. Kundra has invited Goenka for after-match parties. Goenka used to meet players,” he said.
