hat I remember is that an autorickshaw driver pointed towards the bonnet of my car, saying there had been some sparks.
Then two unidentified people who identified themselves as mechanics came to me. They spoke with me, I don’t remember what they said. They asked me for Rs.10,755. Then they took me to the ATM where I withdrew
the money and gave it to them. I don’t know why I did that,” says Virendra Verma who had this peculiar experience on the Eastern Express Highway between Thane and Mulund last Thursday morning. Verma (40) is working as an account director with a reputed company and he thinks he was hynotised and cheated by strange men on his way to office which is actually in Parel. He insists the effects were so strong that they lasted at least 20 minutes. At one point he says he told the men, “Bhai, aap muze ch---ya to nahi bana rahe ho?” (Brother, are you not making a fool out of me?)

n a bizarre incident, conmen used an online classified site, OLX.com, to approach a seller and rob his high-end mobile phone, but after only thrashing him. The incident took place on Tuesday night at Tilak Nagar in Chembur, when 20-yearold Sandeep Jadhav was approached by a person who wanted to purchase his mobile phone. Jadhav, a student and an active social worker, had placed an advertisement for selling his Samsung Grand mobile for Rs.12,000.
Seeing the advertisement on the classified website, a person contacted Jadhav and told him that he was interested but would like to see the handset first. Jadhav, a resident of Sangharsh Nagar at Chandivali in Andheri, was called to Tilak Nagar by the buyer who told him he would not be able to come all the way to Andheri. Jadhav agreed and decided to meet the buyer at 10 pm below the Chembur skywalk leading towards Chembur railway station. While Jadhav was accompanied by his friend, the buyer reached
the spot along with three other persons. “The four thrashed Jadhav and his friend black-andblue and fled away with his mobile phone,” said Laxman Bhalerao, senior inspector of Tilak Nagar police station. A complaint was registered in Tilak Nagar police station against four unidentified persons under the relevant sections of IPC, said the police. The complainant and his friend were treated at Rajawadi Hospital, while the police are now hunting for the accused. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Monsoon in, but yet to raise hopes VASTU TIP OF THE DAY

lthough the south-west monsoon has arrived in the state earlier than expected, the rainfall data of the last 10 days is yet to raise any hopes of ending the water scarcity in parts of Maharashtra. Since June 1, when the pre-monsoon showers began, and since the onset of the monsoon a week later, the rainfall has been satisfactory in seven out of the 35 districts in the state. Even as the south-west monsoon has covered most parts of the state, the cattle camps are still being run. However, the rains have slightly reduced the number of water tankers deployed in scarcity

hit regions. The monsoon has been good in Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Kolhapur districts so far. However, the rainfall is far from satisfactory in the worst scarcity hit districts of the state like Solapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed, Latur, Osmanabad, Nanded, Parbhani, Hingoli and Jalgaon. The scarcity hit district of Ahmednagar however has received 75.6 mm of rainfall so far. The state average rainfall for June has been 222.1 mm, this year, till mid-June, it is already 81.2 mm. Till last week there were 5,500 water tankers deployed in 4,482 villages and 10,882

hamlets across the state. This figure has come down to 5,456 water tankers as of yesterday. Comparatively, last year 2,554 water tankers were deployed in the water scarcity hit villages. Still there are 1,244 cattle camps in operation mostly in Marathwada, north Maharashtra and western Maharashtra. The rains are yet to shore up the dam levels in the state. The water levels in dams in Konkan, Nagpur and Amravati have shown some marginal increase.

The searches are likely to continue tomorrow as well, IT officers added. I-T sleuths yesterday started searches at 50 properties, belonging to both RSBL and Kothari, for alleged tax evasion and bogus import/export of gold. "Kothari is not traceable.

aking a lesson from the severe drought in the state, the state Government yesterday decided to set aside Rs. 470 crore for a micro-irrigation scheme to be implemented from this year across the state. Under the fire from all sides for ineffective largescale irrigation projects which did not provide any relief to the farming community, the Congress-NCP government decided at a cabinet meeting yesterday morning to introduce the new irrigation method, which will be monitored by the Agriculture department. Presently a Central scheme is in existence, however, it is prone to delays. For this ambitious scheme, Rs 250 crore will be made available every year for the

Funds from National Micro-Irrigation Scheme, Vidarbha Intensive Irrigation Development Programme and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna will be utilized for this scheme. The depths of idiocy
You imagine that the Mumbai police have already plumbed the depths of idiocy – and then they go and arrest that poor Sooraj Panscholi for allegedly abetting the suicide of 25-year-old Jiah Khan. Frankly, we think that the sixpage letter that her mother Rabiya says she wrote, and that were found in her room three days after she died, should have been kept under wraps because they show both the girl and her own family in such a poor light. Her is someone who has had the kind of chances that millions of young women all over the country crave, without ever getting the tiniest opportunity. I think it’s pretty safe to say that Karsh Kale is someone almost every Indie Indian artist looks up to in terms or composing and performance. He has teemed up with the Midivial Punditz, Norah Jones and the Bombay Dub Orchestra to produce some of the finest eclectic fusion music this country has seen. As a recurring performer at the NH7 Weekenders and Blue frog, you know the guy means business when he was asked to perform at the White House for President Barack Obama and was mentioned specifically in the US president’s speech. “The artists joining us today exemplify that creed. So we’ve got performers like Karsh Kale, who fuses the best of East and West, mixing eclectic beats with the sounds of his heritage and creating music that’s distinctly his own.” Seriously, how flippin’ cool is that? The bloke’s no stranger to performing at prestigious events. He’s previously worked his magic at the Grammy’s and concert for peace by the Clintons (where he got to speak to Bill Clinton) and we’ve got a feeling this is just the beginning for him. Deaf-mute killers nabbed in 12 hours as they left their mobile phones at crime scene By Zuber Ansari

t took a team of around 80 police personnel, including 20 officers, of the Bandra police station, to crack the murder case of a 58 yearold senior citizen, Nalini Chainani, who was killed on Tuesday evening. The police were themselves dumbstruck when they learned that both the murderers were actually deaf and dumb. The two accused gained access into the home of the victim because she knew them well. On entering the house they attacked her with sharp weapons and hurriedly decamped with valuables, but made the mistake of leaving their cell phones behind. As they exited the building, the watchman who was not present when they had arrived, questioned them and before running away, one of the accused reportedly showed him seven fingers to indicate that they were coming from the 7th floor. Her body was
Killed for trusting: Victim Nalini Chainani discovered by her husband, Sunil, who returned home at around 8.30 pm.
After a couple of hours, when the accused wanted to use their phones and couldn’t find them, they began calling their numbers from various locations in Mumbra and Bandra, which helped investigators who were present at the crime scene, crack the case. The ADC spoke to a local resident, Naresh, who said that both the accused were sitting outside the building from early morning, looking for chance to enter into Madhuban Apartments, where the victim lived. But no one got suspicious because one of the accused, Saif Bhavnagri (28), used to stay in the next building named Gul Palace Apartments. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IX), Cherring Dorje ‘’We solved the murder case within 12 hours, and have arrested two deaf and dumb accused in this connection. They have been identified as Saif Raza Shabbir Hussain Bhavnagri (28) and his accomplice,
Bandra police personnel with the cold-blooded killers, Saif Bhavnagri and Parvez Khan. Parvez Wahid Khan (30) who is a gym trainer by profession and the son of city-based doctor. Saif knew victim and her family members very well, They reportedly entered the building at around 4 pm and committed the crime at around 5.30 pm, after sitting and chatting with the unsuspecting victim who also offered them tea and refreshments. They made off with gold jewellery and cash, totally worth Rs.4 lakh, some of which was recovered later.” “Based on the descriptions given by the building’s watchman and through their mobile phones which they left at the crime scene, we arrested Saif from his Mumbra residence, while Parvez were picked up
from Bandra’s Chinmaiwada locality,” added Dorje. Investigation officer Rajendra Kane revealed that in their confessions, the duo revealed that they were in the habit of drinking and going to discotheques, and due to their bad habits, their families had stopped giving them any pocket money. They therefore had planned to kill Mrs Chainani around a fortnight ago. “We produced them before the court which remanded them to police custody till June 15. We have recovered the knife used in the murder and some jewellery, and investigations are still on,” added Kane.

he Turbhe police have arrested a 38-year-old Sanpada resident for allegedly raping his domestic help. According to the police, the accused, Sanjit Nagir Singh, a resident of Sairaj Apartments at sector 5 in Sanpada, committed the crime when his wife and two sons had gone to a nearby park on Friday evening. “When Singh returned home, he found the 27-year-old victim, who hailed from Kolkata, busy in the kitchen. His wife and two sons were at a park, and only his mentally challenged younger brother was at home, but Singh sent him out on an errand. He then raped the domestic help and threatened her of dire consequences if she
talked to anyone about what had happened,” said P.R. Sawant, assistant police inspector of Turbhe police station. When Singh’s wife and sons returned home after an hour, the victim told her about the rape. The wife then approached the police and registered a complaint. The police have booked Singh under section 376 of Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the judicial court on Sunday morning which remanded him to police custody till June 14. amit.srivastav@afternoondc.in

aking a serious allegation against the film industry Rabiya Khan, mother of deceased Jiah Khan, has alleged that she is receiving threat calls from unknown numbers demanding that she withdraw the case which she has filed against Suraj Pancholi. The caller has tried to ‘explain’ to her that since both families involved are from Bollywood the industry will undoubtedly suffer. However, Rabiya has said she will not reverse her stand as she is fighting to get her daughter justice. Rabiya added that Suraj Pancholi’s mother Zarina Wahab also visited her. “She is also asking me to withdraw the case,” said Rabiya. However, the cops are taking a different stand on the case. After working on various angles in the suicide case and contemplating over the defense lawyer’s argument as to why the suicide note was brought in only three days after the incident, the cops have decided that they will not give a clean chit to anyone, including Jiah Khan’s family. The Juhu Police station is going to take handwriting samples from Jiah Khan’s sister Kavit and her mother Rabiya to see if they match with the six page suicide note and love letter which were recovered from the accused Suraj Pancholi’s residence.
Members of Jiah Khan’s family outside the Juhu Police station after Jiah committed suicide last week. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-Zone IX) Cherring Dorje, “We will produce him before the court on Thursday again and will ask for a further remand; because we have to do panchnama of various places they couple had visited. Also, we have yet to record the statements of the Juhu based doctor who supervised her abortion.” In his statement Suraj confessed that he was in relationship with
Jiah Khan since the last two years. “I don’t want to comment anything more on that issue,” said Dorje. Jiah Khan who debuted opposite Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Nishabdh’ was found hanging at her residence in Sagar Sangeet Apartment on June 3 and just after one week Suraj Pancholi son of Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi was arrested for abetment of suicide. He has currently been granted police custody by the court.

he ADC had reported of ten aspiring police constables being rushed to the BMC-run Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar for dehydration and giddiness after completing the physical test for the post of a constable in the police force. Of the ten, three were in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) of the hospital. It has been learnt that one of them was shifted to Fortis Hospital in Mulund a day after the incident. Rohan Jagtap (25), a Goregaon resident, was brought to Fortis in a very serious condition said doctors at the hospital. “His blood pressure was low and he was vomiting. He was passing black coloured stool which is an indication of bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Levels of liver enzymes were high and his blood platelets were low. Levels of fibrinogen, a protein which is required for clot formation was also low. He is in the Intensive Care Unit. We are giving him blood components and platelets. The bleeding has
stopped and his other parameters are getting better. He is stabilising but still not out of danger. There are twenty per cent chances of him succumbing,” said one doctor. Dr. Vidya Thakur, Medical Superintendent, Rajawadi Hospital, said, “Out of the ten admitted patients, one is with us in the general ward and one has been taken to Fortis Hospital. The others have been discharged.” When asked why he was shifted, Dr. Thakur said, “The relatives wanted to take him there. We had all the facilities to treat him.” Rohan’s brother Omkar said, “Rohan reached the railway police quarters maidan at 6.30 a.m. and was made to sit in the hot sun till 3.30 p.m. He hadn’t eaten anything and so after running for five kilometres, he started feeling giddy and was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. His treatment was going there but on the night of June 7, his condition started deteriorating. His liver had been affected due to the severe heat. So, we decided to shift him to Fortis.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in
Drug case: ATS asked to give approver’s statement to ex-cop By A Staff Reporter
T
he Bombay High Court today directed the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) to provide former IPS officer Saji Mohan, accused in a drug possession case, the statement of a co-accused who has now turned approver in the case. Justice R C Chavan was hearing a petition filed by Mohan, seeking direction to the prosecution to provide him with a statement given by his co-accused turned approver Vicky Oberoi to the ATS during his interrogation. According to Mohan’s petition, the statement would be used by him during cross examination of Oberoi, who is now a prosecution witness. Justice Chavan, while accepting the petition, directed the ATS to furnish a copy of the statement to the accused within three days. “What is the problem to give the statement? His (Oberoi) character as accused has come to an end the moment he was made a witness,” Justice Chavan observed. The court also vacated the stay imposed on the cross examination of Oberoi before the special NDPS court, where the trial is presently on.
Oberoi was arrested in January 2009 along with police constable Rajesh Kumar Kantharia for alleged possession of drugs and conspiracy to smuggle them. Later, Mohan, a former zonal director with the Narcotics Control Bureau and joint director of the Enforcement Directorate, was also arrested by ATS for his involvement in the case. The trio was charged for criminal conspiracy and under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The prosecution has named 40 witnesses against the accused and is also relying on four telephonic conversations between Mohan and members of a drug cartel.

A local court today cancelled the warrant issued against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray after he appeared in a case registered against him for violence during Railway Recruitment Board examinations at a college in suburban Bandra in October 2008. The warrant was issued on June 10 as Thackeray had failed to appear before the Bandra court. However, he appeared today following which the warrant was cancelled. In a related development, Thackeray urged for discharge in the case saying that he was not present when the violence broke out in the college during the examination. He also argued that he had no role to play in the violence. The court has asked the prosecutor to file his say on the discharge application filed by Thackeray on July 1.

School teachers claim that college professors who have no experience teaching schools are being given undue preference on the committee that sets school syllabus
By Yatin Ingle
T
he Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) already rife with problems, has yet another ‘issue’ to tackle. School teachers are getting vocal about the Board of Studies committee, which designs school syllabi, of being comprised almost exclusively of college professors, none of whom have ever taught in schools. According to the rules and regulations of the state board, the committee, which is appointed by the state government, consists of 16 members. These members consist of schools teachers, high school teach-
ers, experts and specialised people from the industry. Ramesh More, secretary, Bahujan Shikshak-Shikshak Karmachari Sansad, said, “School teacher should be always given a preference for being on the committee that design syllabus for schools. While there is no doubt that the college professors are more qualified than schools teachers, but the unique insight that comes from working in a school environment cannot be simply ignored.” Uday Nare, senior teacher, Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri, said “He who designs the syllabus for a school should know what a school student wants. The committee members should
also be acutely aware about the level of the students and their capacity to grasp information.” Responding to these criticisms, Sarjerao Jadhav, Chairman, MSBSHSE, said, “Professors are often on the panels of educationalists, academicians and experts in the committee that structures the syllabus.” When asked if college professors were given higher preference than school teachers, Jadhav replied, “The state government appoints the committee as per the state government’s rules. The members of the committee go through various selection criteria. There is no preferential treatment.”

Standing committee takes up issue of open electricity boxes Open circuit boxes pose risk of electrocution, say committee members By Amit Srivastav
T
he monsoon has already arrived but according to the standing committee members of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) the civic body has not taken adequate measures to make the season safe. All the members including ruling and the opposition echoed the same feeling, while accusing the administration for failing to correct the open circuit box of electricity poles in the city which may be dangerous during the monsoon season. The issue cropped after proposals for the maintenance of street lights of three wards was
tabled for discussions at the standing committee meeting held at Belapur. NCP corpoartor Shivram Patil asked if the correction of circuit box has been included in the proposal. “Monsoon has already arrived and most of the circuit boxes attached with the electricity poles are open which may be dangerous during heavy rainfall,” said Shivram Patil. He questioned, “Is the civic body waiting to happen something wrong?” Santosh Shetty, Congress corporator alleged that the administration had intentionally ignored such works to bring a separate proposal to provide benefit to contractors. Vaibahv Gaikwad, NCP cor-
porator claimed that most of the junction boxes are open. “Children have a habit of playing with the electricity poles and it can be dangerous for them if the circuit boxes are left open. In addition, the junction boxes are also open where high voltage supplies,” said Gaikwad. Jagdish Gawte, Shiv Sena corporator said that a big part of his ward falls is having slum and where children are seen climbing electricity polls. “If the boxes are not closed properly, they can easily be electrocuted,” said Gawte. Ordinance on distributing security W
hy is the UPA government hell bent on bringing an ordinance with regard to the Food Security Bill? The monsoon assembly session is scheduled to be held late in July. There should be discussion on the issue: In fact when it came before the standing committee of parliament, some amendments were moved but there was no discussion on them. This is a very important bill and it is absolutely necessary a discussion should take place in parliament. There is widespread speculation with regard to the hurried decision of the government to skip the introduction of the bill in the assembly. There is an opinion that the government will not be able to muster a majority in the House for a vote on the bill. The Samajwadi Party is not likely to support the government. This party is opposed to the measure with regard to food security – as prepared by the government. Evidently the government does not want to take any risk. Another reason for the government’s hurried intention to issue the ordinance could be it wants to advance the poll date. The government’s hurried proposal is clearly to gain a poll advantage. It looks like it as prepared to break all rules to achieve its objective. Finally, has the government got ready arrangements required for implementing the scheme? And has it got funds – thousands of crores – herded subsidised food items to 69 crore people?

OR a while now strange stories about Shri Lal Krishna Advani have circulated on Delhi’s political grapevine. Stories of how visitors to his house in Prithviraj Road are obliged to watch the latest documentaries made by his daughter before they can discuss anything political. Stories of how he has taken to bursting into tears for no reason. Stories of how he seems deeply embittered about life. Stories of how he surrounds himself with courtiers who praise him all day long and how this has led to him becoming more than slightly deluded about his future political career. I have listened to these stories with sadness because on a personal level I have always had the deepest respect for Mr. Advani. I was very touched that after my book, ‘Durbar’, came out at the end of last year he called me and told me how much he had enjoyed reading it. Even when I have been in total disagreement with his politics, as I was during his rathyatra days, I have never lost respect for him. Can I say this any more with honesty?

vani’s resignation what they mostly concluded was that he had done more harm to himself than to his former protégé, Narendra Modi. Since there is no retirement age in Indian politics he will undoubtedly continue to be an elder statesman in the BJP and continue to be seen in the political arenas of Delhi but he will no longer be taken seriously. Meanwhile, the damage that he sought to do to Modi has been done to the BJP and instead of getting into campaign mode senior leaders will have to spend most of their time on damage control. This will not be easy. Modi is hated by most journalists working in the national media so they have taken great pleasure in pronouncing that if he can have such a polarising effect within his own party he will certainly destroy the NDA (National Democratic Alliance). No
Will no longer be taken seriously No I cannot and I feel bad admitting it because even as I do so images of him as he once was drift before my eyes. I remember him as he was when he first became a minister in the Janata Party government in 1977. I remember him from travels on his various yatras and I remember once being on a small aeroplane with him when the pilot lost his bearings and it seemed for a while that we would never find the landing strip on which we were to land for an election rally. In the years that I have known him I have been impressed by his qualities of humility, integrity and decency. Qualities that are rare in Indian politicians so when he did what he did after the BJP’s decision at its Goa conclave to appoint Narendra Modi as head of its election campaign I felt almost personally betrayed. I found it hard to believe that he could have gone out of his way to destroy the political party that he had led for so long. And, for what? After one day of hysterical panel discussions on our news channels, and a few hours of schadenfreude in Congress circles, Advani took back his resignation letter and the story died. When political commentators sat down to examine the fallout of Ad-
ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh sooner did Advani take back his resignation letter than the English news channels began to speculate about when Nitish Kumar would withdraw the Janata Dal (United) from the alliance. There is the additional problem that most political pundits from academia are even more leftist than us hacks so they hate Modi even more than we do. They say this is because of what happened in Gujarat in 2002 but you only need to scratch a little to discover that beneath that veneer lies the real reason. They hate Modi most of all because he has been articulating an economic vision for India that is the direct opposite of the one that the Congress Party has followed for most of its years in power. They hate the way in which he talks about
aiming for a prosperous India instead of just one in which poverty removal is the goal. And, to demolish his ideas they spout so-called statistics that seek to prove that Gujarat has not done as well as Modi says it has. Any casual visitor to Gujarat cannot fail to notice the new roads and the new prosperity in the villages but academics rarely bother to travel out of Delhi so they base their opinions on information that they claim is from the Planning Commission. Modi’s political opponents choose to attack him differently by asserting as often as possible that he has been chief minister of a state that has always been prosperous so no credit should go to him.
Damage done more to himself Modi is the first major political leader since Jawaharlal Nehru who has articulated a clear economic vision. It is a vision that is almost the exact opposite of the one that Nehru believed in and it is this that attracts young people in our cities because it is a vision of prosperity in which he emphasises governance rather than government. Indian businessmen are drawn to Gujarat exactly because he has succeeded in implementing his ideas in that state so that it has become a place that is investor friendly at a time when investors are fleeing our shores in search of friendlier climes. To articulate his vision in the coming election campaign Modi will need the full support of the BJP’s workers and its organisational machinery. What Advani has managed to do, albeit temporarily, is to disable this machinery by creating the impression that there is a deep rift within it over the leadership of Modi. The truth is that the rank and file of the party is solidly behind Modi and it was because of this that the BJP’s senior leaders were forced to elevate him. If Advani had stood his ground and attempted to break the BJP the only people who would have gone with him would have been a handful of aged leaders who can barely win their own seats but now that he has taken his resignation letter back we will never know for sure. In any case the damage he has really done is to himself. No longer will it be easy for ordinary BJP workers to see him as the patriarch that he has been revered as despite leading the party into defeat in two successive general elections in 2004 and 2009.
Our spiritual conquests need ‘concentration’ W
e must generate in our hearts a certain amount of ‘spiritual enthusiasm’, and then we can readily ‘remember’ our chosen goal constantly. If the constant awareness of the goal is blazing in the highways of our mind, then in our hurried living and the rush of events and happenings we will not, even accidentally, run out catering to the idle demands of the mind and thus fall again unwillingly into some new sets of clinging attachments, expecting happiness from the acquisition and possession of, and indulgence in, the world. The constant remembrance of our goal will serve as a steady warning light, and it will guide us aright steadily on our pilgrimage through all the day-to-day contentions of the busy brutal life in the community! Thus, once shraddha, the ‘sincere urgency’ for mastering the mind has manifested in us, spiritual ‘enthusiasm’ in applying ourselves to its achievement immediately follows, and where there is this ‘enthusiasm’ we cannot but steadily ‘remember’ our determined goal. When a seeker lives in the constant remembrance of his ideal-to-be-attained, his ‘concentration’ grows. The capacity of the mind to entertain consistently one idea, to the exclusion of all

Finding no takers for his gimmick, Advani relents L.K. ADVANI has been playing gimmicks as he seems to be squealing at the anointment of Narendra Modi by the BJP and suffering from the feeling that he is losing a fortune. He is missing a valid point in that the party workers were unanimously vociferous for Modi to lead the campaign and also become the PM. They are also of the firm opinion that only Modi and none other is capable of prevailing over the corrupt Congress and are hence very particular about the candidature of Modi. Advani who had earlier resigned from all important posts in BJP fondly hoping that BJP shall nosedive and grovel, perceived to his dismay that there were no takers for his demands and had to inevitably withdraw his resignations. Shri Advani, who is 85, should remind himself that ‘respect’ is to be ‘earned’ and ‘not demanded’ and conduct himself in a responsible way like a ‘statesman’ and should not stoop down to be despised, as of today, for his greed and incredulous nature on display. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai
SO, a compromise formula appears to have been arrived at which may lead to an uneasy truce between the two warring factions in the BJP. However, the deep dent created by this resignation drama must have left a severe dent in the minds of even the diehard supporters of the saffron brigade which the Hindutva party would find difficult to heal. The committed voters of the Party must be having second thoughts about electing such representatives who, even before being sworn-in, enter into factional fights over some ridiculous issues. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz
L.K. ADVANI, the patriarch of Bharatiya Janata Party is a sad man today, politically! Advaniji’s checkered political career, later how he was being ignored and marginalised by the party rank
Bad phase in Indian cricket THE dice was heavily loaded against Gurunath Meiyappan in the IPL 6 match and spot fixing. He was made to spend some days in Mumbai jail and that was bad news for father-in-law Srinivasan, the exBCCI president and now made to shed his post in the murky IPL deal. The secret diary may open up a Pandora’s Box still further. It is proved beyond doubt that IPL is no gentleman’s game. If you are still brave and reckless in betting then contact the team owners for better prospects. The game of cricket needs total cleaning and unless the Government interferes, nothing is going to make the game get the same popularity as in the past. and file and now finally his ignominious exit from his nurtured party encapsulate a depressed story of an isolated politician who overlooked to read the writings on the wall! His personal contribution in pulling the party from an abysmal two parliamentary seats to 185 seats is really praiseworthy. And, none of the present party stalwarts can lose sight of the fact that Advaniji was instrumental for the current astronomical popularity rise of Narendra Modi.
stership?” Among the available crop, a lot of them have been ministers, with one even a past chief minister of Delhi and is it not natural that all of them will feel insulted by the party superceding them by importing someone from outsdie for electioneering? — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane
AS reported, it is indeed very shocking and disturbing to note L.K. Advani had resigned from all
ior leader L.K. Advani at the instance of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat from Nagpur proves that all the decisions of the BJP is being taken by RSS and it controls BJP through remote control in all the decisions and it has exposed the working of the BJP and its party leadership, particularly L.K. Advani who took the U-turn within 36 hours and withdrew his resignation to surrender himself to RSS to make the Narendra Modi strong in the party for the 2014 general elections. I strongly feel that if Advani has some dignity and credibility to his position and post, he should immediately retire from active politics for lowering the image of himself and the party, rather than sticking to the chair to get humiliated by young party leaders like Modi and others with false promises. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai
U-TURN! RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat succeeded in convincing L.K. Advani that resigning from the party posts is not a solution, but will only be detrimental to the party and its prospects in the 2014 polls. Wake up from your sulking, Advaniji, the party and the nation desperately need you! — V.V. Narayan Thane
THIS is with reference to the report ‘RSS pacifies Advani’ (ADC, June 12). I am inclined to believe that, far from pacifying, Nagpur has in fact directed the octogenarian Advani to either “patch up or pack up” in no uncertain terms, making it clear that it is now the time for the Gujarat strongman to take centre stage, reminding him in the process that he has had his chances and positions of power and so should not aspire for more eternally. Fair enough, but the intriguing question is: “Are there no capable leaders in the party in Delhi who can be trusted with the job of campaigning for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls if not the candidature for the prime min-
party posts which is indeed very harmful and a rather lethal dose to BJP. It is just like digging its own grave particularly when national election is around the corner. It will be a great boon to Congress party and its coast is clear for polls. Advani should have realised how much damage his irresponsible action could cause to BJP which was nurtured by him for such a long time. Matured, wise and experienced as he is, he could have solved the differences amicably. He should have realised that nothing is permanent in this world and it is a universal fact that old gives place to new. However, now that Advani has relented, the BJP has not lost everything except it’s credibility. — S.P. Sharma, Mumbai
EVEN before the mehndi of Narendra Modi‘s appointment has dried up, BJP patriarch L.K. Advani resigned from all posts. This is just the beginning, which I did expect. There is more to follow. Like Mr. Advani, there are many in BJP who do not agree but cannot speak up like Advani. It is unfortunate that BJP President could not visualise the drawback of this appointment, particularly when JD(U) has been saying if he is the prime ministerial candidate, they will walk out of NDA. Probably Modi has literally bribed Rajnath Singh with big election funds from the industries/business houses in Gujarat whom he has helped. Even now it’s not too late to mend and Rajnath Singh should see the big writing on the wall and retract this if he wants to see NDA/BJP in power in 2014. The UPA/ Congress is in a very bad shape and does not have the chance of coming back except if there is no alternative (TINA). It is this TINA that the Congress is confident of in 2014. — Sharad Kumar, Mumbai
WITHDRAWAL of resignation by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sen-
THE BJP, by its own making, has become the ‘butt of ridicule’ in the eyes of other parties. L.K. Advani, Bhishmpitamah of BJP, is on the bed of arrows. But, the irony, in both the cases, (Mahabharat and BJP) is that their own shishyas are responsible with only one difference that Bhishma was happy with Arjuna but Advani is angry with Modi. It is fateful that Advani had to see the situation which he himself created. If one promotes a wrong person, he (wrong person) will always do harm. If milk is offered to a serpent, only poison will increase. It may be recalled that the then prime minister, Vajpayee wanted Modi to resign after 2002 Ahmedabad pogrom. But, Advani, in order to humiliate Vajpayee, sent Arun Jaitley to Ahmedabad to dissuade Modi from resigning and rest is history. As Digvijay Singh said, Modi is a person who chops off the hands that help him. He (Modi) was ruthless and he wants to be one. He believes in dictatorship. — M.H. Nayak, Mumbai
BY declaring the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as chairman of its Election Campaign Committee for the 2014 polls, a move considered just short of making him the prime ministerial candidate, the Bharatiya Janata Party, (BJP), has unfolded its real face. The 2002 Gujarat genocide wherein more than 2,000 Muslims were massacred in the state under Modi’s rule is a big blot on him which can never be washed away. The so called aura of development in Gujarat is nothing but fallacious and attempt by Modi and his supporters to reshape his image as a champion of development from being a mass murderer. The coming 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the electorate will give people like Modi and his party a befitting reply and stop Modi in his tracks before he unleashes his destructive policies at the national level to bring miseries to millions of people of this great country called Bharat. — Mohd Ziyaullah Khan, Nagpur

Women’s health tips AS we find more and more women are prone to cervical cancer and that is causing concern. It is better to have best hygiene and not to use public toilets as far as possible. The concept of annual physical exams has not become common in India but in the US and many other western nations, women are OF mandated to undergo an LETTER THE DAY Annual Wellness Exam. The concept is slowly spreading here but only in the metros. Even if you don’t undergo a comprehensive range of tests, ensure that you do order Pap Smear, twice a year. BMC, CR monsoon readiness belied THE inaugural showers of 2013 (June beginning) and the downpour in the last couple of days have exposed the “monsoonreadiness” of the BMC and other civic bodies. With a downpour that lasted a couple of hours, many places of Central Railway and city suburbs, were flooded. The photographs in the newspapers were just too shocking, considering that it was just the “first showers”! The assurances by all the top officials that there will be no flooding have been belied, yet again. The huge amounts said to be spent on drainage work and road repairs (especially) seem to have gone wasted. The state government, MMRDA and BMC have not taken earnest

>> Fathers and daughters share a special relationship, so make sure you show your dad how much you care on Father’s Day (June 16)
Fathers play an important role in shaping our lives, teaching us life lessons and giving us guidance. To celebrate Father’s Day, Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh asked women in the city to tell us what they’ve learnt from their dads
W
e’re always talking about mothers and daughters, but the connection between fathers and daughters is just as special. We asked a few women to tell us exactly why they appreciate their fathers so much, as we get prepared to wish all our dads a very happy Father’s Day!

Lesson 2: Money doesn’t buy class “The most important lesson my father taught me was to be humble, honest and giving, because money can’t buy you class. He taught me that giving willingly makes you feel good and that you never know when life can take a turn for the worse. Another important lesson he taught me was that even if you fail, it doesn’t make you a failure and you should move on. Remembering what he said makes me learn from my mistakes and helps me try again without repeating them.” Maya Bhogilal (28), partner at EtcEtre Marketing & Events Continued on pg 14 «

cherish, since he’s been the backbone and support for what I am today.” Sayali Bhagat (29), actor
Lesson 3: Forgive & forget “One lesson I learned from my father was to forgive and let go, as we only have a maximum of 36,500 days to live. Sometimes, small issues can turn into a big deal if they’re not dealt with at the right time. He also taught me that no issue is so severe that you have to hold it against someone forever. He helped me learn that life is too short to hold grudges.” Prioska Uke (22), image executive
Lesson 4: stay grounded “I think the relationship between father and daughter is the most sacred. One important lesson my lovely dad drilled into my head was to stay grounded and down to earth, because as he says, our behaviour portrays our attitude in the social world, which defines us as individuals. He taught me never to get carried away by the taste of success or to let pride overrule your mind.” Ritika Shah (30), corporate communications for Kohinoor Hospitals
Lesson 5: Dream big “My dad, Laxman Popley, was a man of principles and discipline. He taught us that everyone should have a dream, the vision to fulfill it and to work towards those goals accordingly. He taught us to be humble, down to earth and most importantly — to trust people and gain trust through your work.” Rhea Nashta (50), jewellery designer for Popley & Sons
Lesson 6: Find a balance “I learnt a lot of things from my father; he’s an astute man who balances things perfectly. Over the years, I’ve percolated his art of balancing situations and it’s helped me overcome challenges in my personal as well as professional life. This is one lesson I’ll always
Lesson 7: Don’t chase success “My father is a self-made man, who learnt things the hard way. So, he made sure that I didn’t face similar hardships and he has been by my side, advising me and never getting offended by my failures. He follows a simple rule: never run after success by giving up on your morals. He also says that if you work with efficiency and integrity, success will follow you.” Dr. Karishma Jaradi (31), dentist at Dentzz Dental Care Centres
Lesson 8: Don’t forget your roots “My father taught me one of the most important lessons of my life — no matter which path you tread, no matter what heights you reach, always know your way back home. It’s really helped me.” Nushrat Barucha (25), actor
Lesson 9: Worldly wisdom “To most people, he’s Thakur Birendra Bikram Singh Bais of erstwhile Banswara, someone they will proudly say lives “here” as you approach from a 5km radius. To me, he’s dad. I’ve missed him and his lessons (steeped in our rich Rajput history), but they stand the test of time. He told me it’s good I have a face that has graced magazine covers, but more importantly, it’s good that I have brains. He taught me that the only way to be independent is through knowledge and wisdom. He also taught me that if I have to stab someone, I should always have the courage to do so from the front as only a coward does so from the back. He also taught me to remember the rule ‘first among equals.’” Anjhula Mya Singh Bais, international model and psychologist
Lesson 10: Be yourself “Since I was a little girl, I’ve been told that I’m just like my father. I have always tried to emulate him. He showed me the importance of being myself and taught me not to copy other people or their habits. He said imitating others would hamper my capabilities and identifying my abilities would be very difficult.” Rani (29), RJ on Big FM
Lesson 11: Live big
dad, who is a black belt in karate, started teaching me the martial art. He always said that the world is a dangerous place and you should be well equipped to tackle any threatening situation.” Charmi Arora (27), chartered accountant
Lesson 14: open your mind “I still vividly remember the days when my father introduced me to the classics in literature. It was a Sunday morning; I was 10 then and dad egged me on to read one of Wordsworth’s poems. Eventually, this became a ritual, as dad had a huge collection of the works of British poets. It didn’t matter then whether I understood them or not. But, my first brush with ‘good’ literature was because of him.” Purnima Singh (23), media planning executive
“My father taught me to be brave and to always find happiness in any situation. He told me that every child, whether girl or boy, has the ability to do something big in life and one should cherish their existence. He told me life is beautiful and we should live it king size. He made me laugh when I was sad and always managed to bring a smile to my face. He embodies the meaning of happiness and I thank him for all that he has done for me.” Yamini (27), RJ on Big FM
“My dad, who is a health freak, is very particular about what he eats. As a child, I used to go grocery shopping with him and while other shoppers would be haggling with bargaining, my dad would be cribbing about the quality of fruits and vegetables. Even in supermarkets (it gets a little irritating sometimes!), he wouldn’t buy anything new without reading a label. When it comes to healthy grocery shopping, no one can fool me. All thanks to Papa!” Nirbhika Sharma (30), homemaker
Lesson 12: never say “can’t”
Lesson 16: Penny wise
“One of the most important lessons my father has taught me is that ‘can’t’ means ‘don’t want to’. Every time my sister and I said we couldn’t do something, he always told us to have confidence and faith, because you really can do anything if you give it your all. He’s my rockstar and I want him to know that I’m grateful to him for always being there for me.” Tamira Shah (28), PR professional
“I’ve been born and brought up in a middle class family and because my mother passed away when we were very young, dad had to take charge of the household. We siblings still marvel at how dad used to fulfill all our needs with his modest income. He has a knack when it comes to saving money and used to do it with such smoothness and discretion. I have learned how to save and spend my income wisely from my dad.” Shamoly Chandran (28), dentist
Lesson 13: Kick ass! “Fathers are thinking of teaching selfdefense to their daughters now, but my father taught me to be able to defend myself almost two decades ago. I was five when my
Lesson 15: eat smart
Lesson 17: Be ambitious “I am a very ambitious individual and I’ve learned that from my father. Since I was 12, my father always reinforced the idea of building a strong career. He used to say that in any circumstance, she should be able to sustain herself. It’s a lesson that has stuck with me till date.” Rhea Nagpal (25), interior designer
CeLeB sPeaK
Lesson 19: Be patient
Lesson 21: Maintain your simplicity
“My father has taught me that when things don’t happen to you at the time you want them, it does not mean that they will never happen. It just means it will happen when the time is right. I truly believe in this and it has helped me a lot.” — Rashami Desai Sandhu
“My dad taught me to be simple at heart. Money will come and go and so will success, but what remains is simplicity. Even today, I travel and drive around myself if need be I am beginning to realise how important a lesson this has been.” — Mugdha Godse

Every time you go out shopping, do you always end up picking clothes in the same styles, colours and textures? To stop you from this self-wardrobe-sabotage, Priyanka Singh gives you 10 ways to upgrade your closet
H
ave there been times when you’ve gone shopping with your girlfriends, picked up a piece that you liked, asked them for their opinions and they say: “Don’t you already have that navy blue jacket?” or “Isn’t this similar to the black pumps that you already have?” Despite your wardrobe being elaborate, nothing seems to be new in there. You open your closet, find nothing worth wearing, go shopping and after stacking your new clothes in there neatly, still can’t find anything to wear! This is probably because you are stuck in a style rut. We give you 10 ways to upgrade your wardrobe and look like a brand new you every day.
They are feminine, flirty and add colour to your wardrobe. If you’re not a big fan of floral prints, make them visible on the fringes. Carry a floral handbag, buy floral shoes or accessories.
BRiNg iN The miNT
layeR yoUR STRiNgS
You have to have something in mint in your wardrobe. The colour adds an instant touch of freshness to your range of clothes. Mint transforms a dull outfit into an eye-catching one. If you want to wear the colour in more than one way, buy a mint jacket. That way you can wear it over a blouse, dress or a pair of pants. A mint coloured top paired with a white pair of pants is a classic.
The jewellery that you wear with your outfit also makes a huge difference and a simple piece can transform your entire look. If your outfit is simple, layer long strings of necklaces together to up the dull look. But, make sure that all of them are not very heavy or chunky pieces. Apart from that, you can also wear a statement piece around your neck. You don’t have to spend a bomb on these. Just walk through Linking Road in Bandra or Colaba Causeway and you’ll find plenty.
FRillS & RUFFleS Frills and ruffles, whether on a top or dress, are making waves this season. They don’t only provide a cute twist to your garb, but give your attire a very young and carefree look — one of the important elements that you require to slip in into your boring wardrobe.

There’s no doubting that Madhuri is one of the most beautiful women in Bollywood. But, her outfit is making us doubt her sense of style... and eyesight. This is taking the hi-low trend too far and frankly, it looks a bit silly on this demure star.
Sporty spice from the waist up and society lady from the waist down, Prachi Desai’s look is boggling. This outfit is trendy in Hollywood now and stars pair the look with wedge sneakers — not just wedges. Read fashion mags properly, Prachi!

3. go FloRal Who said brooches were just for adults? We love this pretty blue floral brooch from Ayesha Accessories. It’s not over-the-top, but will definitely stand out. price `190
«
jUhi chawla
At first glance we liked this seemingly demure outfit. But, on closer inspection, the bling everywhere just made Juhi’s look go downhill. While the sparkly shoes add a nice touch, that sequinned high neck bib is simply overkill.
«
Neha dhUpia
We think that this was the look poor Prachi was going for. Neha’s outfit is cool and simple and we like it that she went easy on the makeup. The focus is on her wedge sneakers and of course, her support for desi dogs — the main reason her outfit and attitude gets a thumbs up from us.
«
Shalmali Kholgade
The Bollywood playback singer looks cute in her simple floral outfit. But, come on, when you know there are cameras around, do you really want to be caught without your shoes? Or maybe she likes to sing barefoot like Joss Stone. We’ll forgive her this time.
4. FaShioN FoRwaRd If you’re the sort of girl who needs a little designer worthy piece in her wardrobe, this embellished tassel brooch from Pernia’s Popup Shop is worth a buy. Called the Cadillac brooch, it’s not for the light pocketed. price `7,500 5. ShaRp aRoUNd The edgeS Viange has a wide selection of brooches and mostly all are in floral designs. We picked this one because it’s different from the run-off-the-mill gold roses and pretty flowers. The sharp lines and dark borders give it an interesting, edgy look. price `6,500 onwards
doN’T SNeeR aT SheeR Sheer tops or tops that have sheer sleeves are a big hit this season. However, we aren’t suggesting you to go all out with shiny undergarments below a sheer black a la Katrina Kaif. Wear a camisole of the same colour, pair it with skinny jeans or a pair of denim shorts and ballet flats and you have a stylish, pulled together look.
BliNg a RiNg Large statement rings have been a hit since the middle of last year and they continue to save your drab outfit. There is a lot of diversity and a similar amount of repetition in the stuff that’s available in the market. Try to avoid rings that have too many tiny stones encrusted in them as they lose their sheen soon or are not glued properly and fall off in a few weeks. Also, steer clear of owl, elephant and heart motifs. They are common in a yawninducing way.
NeoN Nymph You have to have been living under a rock to not know that this trend has hit big recently and how! From neon tops, belts, accessories to neon shoes and makeup — neon’s sweeping through all sections of fashion. If too much neon hurts your eye or you aren’t comfortable wearing it, then include hints of neon in your look such as neon pumps, a necklace, bangles or even a large ring.
jaNgle ThoSe BaNgleS You might not have noticed, but bangles give your overall look a very ethnic yet modern touch and can be worn not just on Indian outfits, but also with dresses and jeans. With the assortment available in the market, mix and match. You can also get a great statement cuff that will definitely stand out.
pUmp ThoSe NUdeS Nude is the new black when it comes to footwear. But if that’s the case, why would you opt for nude over black? You might argue that black goes with any colour, but so does nude. And nude presently means fashion forward as well. So, buy a pair of nude pumps, peep toed sandals or wedges and give your predictable black a break for a while.
moNochRome If you’re stuck in a style rut, chances are that you have a lot of black and white in your closet. Don’t completely disregard your old clothes because you can pull off the trendy monochrome style with items you already have. However, to make your look stylish, you need to add a splash of colour to your outfit.
« JUST OUT! NyaSSa Soap When the soaps arrived on our beauty desk, it was hard not to get mesmerised by their scent. Other soaps can rarely match the aroma that handmade, natural soaps give out — there was not a trace of anything chemical or artificial smelling in them. What we like about Nyassa is that it is one of the few manufacturers whose products are 100% vegetarian. We tried the Mandarin Citrus soap and the Green Apple soap that smelled good enough to bite into. The mandarin soap has an intense scent and lathers well; it’s mildly exfoliating and helps remove dead skin and tightens pores. After a shower, the scent managed to linger. However, the apple, while great, has a mild smell that is great while showering but doesn’t last long. However, it’s super gentle on the skin and lathers luxuriously. The shea butter also moisturises, which leaves your skin supple. Other flavours include coffee, sandalwood, alphonso mango and several other tempting scents. price Mandarin (`200)/ Green Apple (`250) where Leading beauty stores across the city Star Rating: ***
weSTSide RoSe cReam The new range of creams from Westside had me all excited, especially the rose scented one because it didn’t have an overpowering rose scent and looked as delicious as cotton candy. The cream has good quantity and is not heavily priced, which is a plus point. On application however, the cream was extremely greasy and my skin took a very long time to absorb it. This means that you’re walking around with greasy arms and legs for at least a couple of hours, which isn’t comfortable. The scent does not linger and the cream is only slightly moisturising. It’s effective in keeping dryness away but I wouldn’t pick it up again. price `349 where Westside outlets across the city Rating **

« CAREER ADVICE leArn how to deAl with groupism At work I am good friends with one of my co-workers. She is a dedicated and bright employee, but she’s a little innocent. She doesn’t have the courage to stand up for something, no matter how it might be troubling her. She was recently dumped with a pile of work and being on the same team as her, I know it’s too much for one person to handle. However, she’s not complaining. I would really like to help her. What can I do? — paromita das, kharghar dear paromita We understand how you want to stand up for your friend, but our recommendation is that you do not do that. While it might seem natural to you, your boss might not appreciate you raising the issue instead of her. What you should do is have a talk with her. Tell her that if she wants to survive the corporate set up, she will have to learn to identify and fight her own battles. Give her the courage to raise the issue. And in case you have a casual environment at office and your boss is open to everyone, you can go and talk on her behalf. But, do that only after she has had at least one discussion with the boss about her workload. I have been working in a large firm for about eight months and there’s a lot of back biting and bitching. There are many groups and cliques in office and I’ve started integrating myself in a few. However, the members of one particular group don’t like me mingling with several groups and so, they have started taunting me and passing snide comments about it. I think I should stop talking to them. What do you suggest? — Jigisha devram, chembur dear Jigisha, Have you regressed to your college ragging days? It sure seems like that. You are a woman who can talk to whoever you feel like without anybody passing snide remarks. If this particular group has been taunting and bullying you regarding the same, we suggest you stop hanging out with them completely. But, make sure that you are friendly with people from the other groups before making that move, lest you become lonely at work. If you listen to them this time and concede, their domination is only going to keep increasing.

hug
Omg! I’m totally drenched!
guide F
rom a pat on your back to a tight squeeze, a hug is a universal indicator of love, friendship and comfort. However, all hugs don’t mean the same thing. Some hugs can be so awkward that you wonder why you ventured into the giver’s arms in the first place. And some hugs can be very short but filled with affection. Here’s a guide to the different types of hugs and what they reveal.
The Back hug This is the type of hug that surprises you. Your man comes up from behind and wraps his arms firmly around you. Even if he hasn’t said it yet, this hug is from a man who is in love with you. He’s covering your body with his, which means he wants to shelter and protect you. However, be careful if your guy always hugs you from the back. This could mean that he wants to be close but is afraid you’re not into him.
The RuB hug We know this sounds kind of creepy, but it’s simply your man holding you and gently stroking your back at the same time. This hug indicates that he cares deeply about you and that the two of you have a strong connection. However, if the rubbing slowly starts intensifying, you might want to take your hug somewhere private because your man has other things on his mind. If the strokes seem erratic, it could mean that your guy is worried about something. So, hug him back and ask him if everything is okay.
I’ve been dating a guy for a little over a month and it’s going great. But, my problem is that every time we go out, he gets me a present. It’s nothing big or expensive — just chocolate, a magazine or a flower. The first few times I felt bad because I didn’t have anything to give him. He told me he didn’t want anything and just liked giving me stuff he thinks I would like. I’m feeling burdened by this and I feel
Come here!
Just as planned, we were soon standing very close to each other in the rain. It was so romantic! Then it started pouring even more heavily. The umbrella was doing us no good. And the bus just did not show up. So, to escape from the rain, we ran into a nearby coffee shop and had hot chocolate while shivering from being soaked and waiting for the rain to subside.
>> While hugs indicate affection, find out what else they can reveal
The Thump Yes, that was probably your heart falling to the floor. When your guy thumps or pats your upper back during an embrace it could mean a lot of things. And they’re not all good. The first thing is that he’s just not into you. This is the type of hug he reserves for his buddies, not his girlfriend. When he does this in the company of friends, he might be doing it to show that he’s not fully committed to you. If he does it in private, he’s probably not feeling the love anymore. However, if the thump is just a one off thing and it only happens in public, it could just mean he’s not into PDA. Wait and watch, sister.
I feel so cold!
I feel like a bucket of water!
We must have chatted for about two hours. It was so nice talking to him. We chatted about everything under the sun — his family, my family, our interests, hobbies and more. And it had stopped raining at least half an hour earlier, but we still continued chatting. I can’t describe how romantic it was! All cold and wet and mucky outside... all warm and cozy and chatty and chocolatey inside! I felt like I was in a dream cocoon of super romantic happiness and love! And Ronak kept looking at me so dreamily too...
The WRap He tightly grasps your lower back and pulls you towards him. Looks like you’re going to get lucky tonight! This is the type of hug you should only get from the man in your life. If someone else hugs you like this, punch the guy. However, if your man is dishing out this type of hug it shows that he’s keen. The lower the hands go, the more fired up he is.
head To head When you’ll hug, does he put his forehead against yours? If yes, apart from wanting to connect physically, your man also wants to merge your minds together. If you’re in a new relationship, it’s safe to say you’re more than a casual fling. If you’ll have been together for some time, it shows that he’s emotionally and mentally committed to you.

Ronak and I work in the same production house. I think he’s very cute and I want him to be my boyfriend! We chat a lot, but it’s mostly about work. That day it was raining and I saw him standing at the bus stop. I let my umbrella stay in my bag and ran to him...

like I’m obligated to get him something. How do I deal with this? — Janna, Bandra dear Janna, Ah! The first flush of love. If the boy wants to give you presents (they aren’t elaborate gifts, so it’s fine) and doesn’t want anything in return, then that’s okay. But, while he isn’t asking for gifts in return, make sure you don’t feel pressurised into taking the
relationship further just because he’s showering you with presents. If his intentions seem honest, and I’m inclined to go that way, then enjoy this phase while it lasts. Just don’t get too used to all the present-giving because it will taper down and eventually stop. And hopefully, you won’t miss these gestures too much. RAJAT TOKAS WILL BE EKTA KAPOOR’S After ‘Dharti Ka Veer Yodha Prithviraj Chauhan’, Rajat Tokas from Delhi, worked in ‘Sai Baba’ and then he worked in NDTV Imagine serial produced by Sagar Arts called ‘Dharam Veer’ where he plays the role of Veer. He appeared for a short cameo as ‘Madhav Shastri’ (young Keshav Pandit) in Zee TV's show Keshav Pandit. His latest venture was in Star Plus’ ‘Tere Liye’ where he played the role of Robindo Ganguly. Now he stars in a role of a lifetime as ‘Akbar’, the great Mughal king in Ekta Kapoor’s magnum opus ‘Jodha Akbar’. In a brief chat with Rajat Sandeep Hattangadi got to know more about the show. What made Ekta Kapoor cast you as ‘Akbar’? Ekta has found the ideal blend of boyish innocence and rugged manliness required of Akbar in me. For Akbar, she wanted an actor who is a boy-man. Although I had the innocence of a 19-year-old I am also mature as an actor. Akbar was someone who became a soldier and a king at the age of 14 and by 17, he had already won a battle on his own and I am also an expert in martial arts and horse riding. So I was perfect for the role and I was selected. Have you seen Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film ‘Jodha
‘AKBAR’
Akbar’? No. I deliberately refrained from seeing it since I didn’t want to be influenced in any way and wanted my portrayal of Akbar to be totally original.
How do you feel working with the cast? We have just started shooting and I am eager to shoot with Paridhi Sharma who plays Jodha. The ensemble cast of the show includes
prominent actors such as Ashwini Kalsekar playing Mahamanga, a pivotal mother figure in Akbar’s life who saved him from the clutches of death across many a battle. Chetan Hansraj will play the role of Adham Khan, the mighty son of Mahamanga who has an eye on the Mughal throne.
We hear there are going to be special promotions of the show.
Yes. In the digital space, Zee TV plans to create a virtual historical monument on Facebook giving online users a chance to immortalise their love by inscribing theirs and their lovers’ names on the monument. The idea is to support the preservation of our monuments by encouraging lovers to write their names on virtual monuments rather than real ones. The channel will create boards on Pinterest familiarising viewers with the architecture, monuments, artifacts, clothes and jewelry from the Mughal era. Zee TV will organise edutainment excursions for school children where they will watch the shoot of the show and be taken on a guided tour of the ‘Jodha Akbar’ sets that resemble Jodha and Akbar’s palaces, showcasing replicas of the costumes, jewellery, weapons used in the Mughal era that are currently being used in the show. In Delhi, the channel will make the toll booth on the DND flyover toll-free on the day of the launch in remembrance of the fact that emperor Akbar had waived off a pilgrimage tax for all countrymen in his time. The channel will also have stalls serving sherbet outside prominent dargahs in Uttar Pradesh as a goodwill gesture on the launch day.
What kind of shows would you like to do in the future? Any concept which is nice and gives me a chance to perform will be a show I would like to do and that includes reality shows too. And films? Yes. I would gradually like to do films too. Any role models or inspirations? No one specific but I look upto all successful people and try to imbibe their good qualities. Spoken like a true wise king!

Order book visibility low: KNR Constructions’ (KNR) has an order book of Rs 20bn (2.9x TTM revenue), after deducting Rs 6.8bn order from GVK. In FY13, it bagged orders of Rs 10bn, and is aiming at another Rs 13bn in FY14. Management is geared up to bid for upcoming EPC contracts from NHAI and is currently negotiating with private developers for orders. Apart from roads, it is also focused on diversifying into urban infra, irrigation and bridges. Revenues likely to improve: For FY13, the company’s revenue declined 8% yoy, despite receiving Rs 480m early-completion bonus (Bijapur-Hungund toll road). Most of the benefit of the bonus was lost as a lot of equipment was idle during the year. In 4QFY13, however, revenue grew 41% yoy, higher than we estimated, following strong project execution in Karnataka and Nagpur. With execution now picking up at its Kerela project (own BOT), management is aiming at revenue of Rs 9bn for FY14. EBITDA margin to stabilize: For FY13, KNR clocked EBITDA margin of 16.4% (vs 17.7% in FY12). We estimate margins to be maintained at ~16.5% over the next two years, backed by strong revenue growth. Update on BOT projects: In May’13, KNR completed financial closure on the Kerala project. So far, it has invested equity of Rs 700m (of the total Rs 1.36bn committed), funded through internal accruals (Rs 300m) and loans (Rs 400m). Moreover, the company has obtained all environmental and forest clearances and work on the project has begun in 4QFY13. Further, it is working on issuing NCDs to raise ~Rs 400m from its BOT project in AP, slated to be used to fund the remaining equity requirement for Kerala project. Our take: Strong revenue growth is likely in FY14 with significant contribution of its own BOT projects. We retain Buy with TP of Rs 115. Our SOTP target is based on 5x FY14e earnings, a 33% discount to other midcap construction companies (Rs 105) and 1x BV of investments (Rs 10).
Geojit BNP Paribas Research calls a ‘Buy’ on V-Guard Ind. CMP: Rs. 471 Target Rs. 546
V Guard Industries Ltd (VGIL), has grown its business at 38% CAGR over the last 5 years even during tough economic scenario in the last 3 years with 44%CAGR. This gives us immense confidence about its business growth. Diversified niche product profile with low penetration and expansion in nonsouth market will continue to be the growth driver. Given VGIL’s niche product-line, competition and erosion of margins will be the highest risk. But we also see a very high possibility to scale-up the business with higher penetration and more product launches. Hence we like the business profile but given the recent price appreciation and near term margin headwinds, we recommend a ACCUMULATE rating. Niche & wide product range... with successful launches: VGIL has a diversified roduct range like PVC cables, LT cables, UPS, Digital UPS, Switchgears, Induction cook tops and Mixer grinder. And has shown continues success in identifying and introducing new product lines, example: LT power cables introduced 3 yrs ago has grown at 70% CAGR to ~Rs 750mn revenues, Digital UPS + 150% CAGR to Rs l,700mn revenue since FY10. Management expect good prospect in solar water heaters, switchgears and induction cook tops. Management’s net sales guidance is 25% CAGR for FY13-FY15E, against our expectation of 22%. Pan India Network.... customer service: VGIL has a Pan India distribution network with 230 exclusive distributors, 4,000 direct dealers, 28 branches and estimated 13,000-20,000 retailers. The average dealer addition peryr is 725 in last 4 years. VGIL has 200 service centres for after sales services. Dealership is expected to grow by 15% in non-south and 10% in south. Margins impacted... to normalise as discounts fade: Margins have reduced from 10.1% FY11 to 8.1% in FY13, lead by competition in a weak economy. Dealer discounts have been increased in the last 2- 3 quarters. We believe that these are one time scenario and discounts will normalise as white goods’ market improves. We forecast sub-average EBITDA margin of 8.7% and 9.0% in FY14E & FY15E vs historic highs of 11%. Valuation: VGIL is currently trading at Rs.472.5 at PE of 16.7x and 13x FY14E and FY15E earnings respectively. We value the stock at 15x on FY15E to arrive at a target price of Rs 546. We believe a PE band of 14x - 16x will be a better representative of its future valuation based on our earnings growth assumption and margin profile, which is closure to its one year average PE of 16.5x. We await for the margin profile to streamlines over the next few quarters, and recommend a ACCUMULATE rating. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

T
he Growth in India’s index of industrial production (IIP) has slowed down to 2.0 % in April from 3.4 % in the previous month. Fuel shortages, ongoing mining ban in some states, delays in commissioning of large projects, and moderation in demand continues to plague India’s industrial sector. Manufacturing growth remained weak at 2.8 % in April and came from only a handful of industries. In April, the output of top 5 industries - in terms of contribution to manufacturing growth- grew by 22.3 % compared to a year ago, while the output of the remaining 17 industries fell by 3.7 %. The weak and highly concentrated growth within the

manufacturing sector is a major concern. The revival of the manufacturing sector is crucial for the recovery of the service sector given its positive spill-overs to sectors such as trade, transport and finance. Among major industries, Wearing apparel registered a high growth of 86.6 % in April. If one excludes this industry, manufacturing growth in April would have been 0.4 %. Capital goods growth fell sharply to 1.0 % in April from 9.0 % in the previous month. Consumer goods output grew, aided by a growth in output of consumer non-durables. Consumer durables’ output, in contrast, continued to decline for the fifth consecutive month, suggesting a weak household demand. Incidentally, shortages in coal and
natural gas led to a deceleration in electricity output growth to 0.7 % in April from 3.5 % in March. The power sector in India is increasingly reliant on imported coal due to shortages in domestic coal production. The recent depreciation of the rupee will raise the rupee cost of imported coal and intensify the input constraints being faced in electricity production. Overall, output of the eight core infra industries, having nearly 38 % weight in IIP, decelerated to 2.3 % in April from 3.2 % in the previous month. A fall in coal, natural gas and fertiliser production was largely responsible for the slowdown. A revival of India’s industrial sector is contingent upon a turnaround in the performance of core industries.
“The industry component at 2% cent is a great matter of worry. Everybody, the policy makers, as also people in the field need to give it a thought ... The low IIP growth which has been happening for the past one year, its time we wake up to that,”

Rupee Depreciation Could Hurt ECB Funded Corporates By A Business Reporter The inclusion of “an external commercial borrowing (ECB) facility in the funding structure or substitution of the existing domestic debt with an ECB facility will not,
automatically, improve the overall credit profile of the project,” says research house India Ratings. According to it “While projects may be availing loans at interest rates lower than those charged in the domestic market, their debt service commitments in rupee terms may rise sharply if the rupee depreciates
Companies With Strong Fundamentals Outperform Broader Markets By A Business Reporter An empirical study on the stock price performance of companies under Crisil Research’s coverage reveals that companies with strong fundamentals outperformed the broader markets over two- and five-year horizons. At the same time, companies with moderate to poor fundamentals have trailed. This is one of the few empirical studies which link companies’ fundamentals with long-term stock performance in the Indian equity market. The Indian equity market
has been highly volatile over the past few years. The CNX Nifty and CNX Midcap indices are still trading 9% and 23%, respectively, below their 2008 highs. Despite market gyrations, some companies demonstrated strong share price performance, indicating that good investment opportunities did exist. Crisil Research’s study on companies across sectors and market capitalisation indicates that investment in a portfolio of fundamentally strong companies would have generated market alpha (higher return over the relevant benchmark) for equity investors even during the volatile phase.
beyond initial expectations. The current depreciating trend of INR against USD is likely to erode the potential savings expected while availing the ECB facility.” Since some projects incur varying proportions of capital in foreign currency, the ECB acts as a natural hedging tool for payments to vendors in foreign currency over a fairly long construction period. However, debt servicing remains exposed unless hedged, which is rarely the case. Based on its portfolio of rated projects, Ind-Ra estimates a savings of around 6%-15% of the total debt service obligations on account of ECB funding. These savings are, however, limited to the initial three to five years of debt amortisation. These envisaged savings are helpful since the ECB funding aids cash flows during the project’s initial ramp up stages. Notwithstanding these savings, the total outflow of an ECB-funded facility is likely to be higher than that of a facility funded solely in the domestic currency. The “benefits in the initial years of project stabilisation are expected to come at the expense of higher cash outflows, thanks to the unhedged exposure and heavily back-ended amortisation in the later years of the project life cycle, the research house concludes.
BUSINESS BRIEFS Most Of Rupee Depreciation May Be Behind Us, Says BofA-ML
The rupee which has depreciated by 6 per cent over the past month, is likely to stay “volatile” in the near term but the worst may be behind us, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a research note yesterday. “We feel that most of the depreciation may be behind us as gold imports are reducing and likely to fall given measures taken by government. Secondly oil prices are stable and thirdly government may be forced to raise flows through NRI bonds,” BofA-ML said.
Retail inflation drops
Falling for the third straight month, retail inflation stood at 9.31 % in May due to easing of prices of edible oil and protein-based items, even as vegetable prices inched up sharply. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation stood at 9.39 % in April. It was 10.39 % in March. The overall food and beverages segment saw an inflation of 10.65 % in May, higher than 10.61 % in April.
MMTC 9.33% Stake Sale Today
The group of ministers on disinvestment today cleared 9.33 per cent stake sale in MMTC through offer for sale which may fetch the exchequer Rs 300 crore.”We will divest 9.33 per cent in MMTC tomorrow through OFS route,” Disinvestment Secretary Ravi Mathur told reporters here. The government targets to raise Rs 40,000 crore from its PSU stake sale in 2013-14. The government expects to raise Rs 250-300 crore through the MMTC stake sale and the base or floor price would be “nowhere near the current market price”.
New Guidelines For ‘High Rise Buildings’ Welcomed
The National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) has welcomed the new guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest in respect of High Rise Buildings. The guidelines would now allow greater flexibility for state governments and local bodies, to decide on high rise buildings, based on issues such as population density, pressure on land etc. NAREDCO feels that the new guidelines will help in completion of stalled projects and also encourage slum rehabilitation projects. I am in a peculiar fix. I’ve been happily married for five years now. However, I have not married my first love – situations changed and I lost faith that he loved me. Now call it fate, I met him again accidentally. He stays in a different town and I do not meet him but I miss him. Not that I do not love my husband but I feel some feelings for him too. Is it possible to love two persons at the same time? Should I be in touch with him through phone calls or mail just as a friend? I’m perplexed. Help me. You say that you had felt that your first love did not love you and therefore you broke up. Well, the affair ended there but probably your selfimage could not take it. Your current feelings for your first love are nothing but a need to massage your injured pride. You want to feel that

In that case you seem to be taking your husband’s love for granted and are thinking only of yourself and what you want. Don’t you think that’s a wee bit selfish? As far as keeping in touch with your old flame is concerned I do not think it is a very good idea. You would be lying to yourself if you said that it is only for friendship. Try giving in love instead of receiving and you will find great joy and fulfillment in your married life. In case you are still unable to resolve your feelings and find clarity in your life, I would strongly suggest that you see a psychotherapist.

THE GERMAN’S ‘SILENT INDIAN HOCKEY REVOLUTION’ 30

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2013
ANDREA THUMSHRIN, a German hockey player has made India her home leaving Germany for good. Her stated mission is to get India back to its glory days. For that purpose, she travelled across India in an auto-rickshaw trying to generate funds and support her project in a remote Rajasthan village. NEIL JOSHI speaks exclusively to her on this ‘Silent Revolution’ she has wrought and how she has enlightened the minds of the young girls in the village. She speaks of her journey in transforming children into hockey lovers, and intends to ‘stick’ it out in the long haul.
Your visit to a small village, Garh Himmat Singh, Dausa district in Rajasthan in 2010 off the Jaipur-Agra highway changed the face of the nondescript village. Why did you decide to instill love of hockey in a place where the population was miles away from the sport? I played hockey since I was six years and traveling is my profession. So my job was to bring German tourists to India. So it was a coincidence that I ended in the village which is between Jaipur and Agra. In Germany, I felt kids are overloaded with work by playing sports or instruments and in India, I felt children have nothing to look up to. They either play cricket or just sit idle. Nobody feels responsible to do something. It is worst in the villages. In that village there was nothing – they were taking care of their little sisters or brothers but they had nothing for themselves. So I thought of getting some sticks and see whether they can have some fun in their life.
A foreign lady deciding to take a huge step in India by starting this project. What were the impediments in the course of implementing the project? I had never decided that I would open a hockey academy in India. It was a step by step process. I came again and again and I spread some hope and that gave me the responsibility to take it forward. I saw that they were quite talented and they were eager to learn. We made them watch ‘Chak De India’ to make them understand what hockey essentially it. Earlier nobody knew anything about the game. I also didn’t know Hindi so it was difficult for me also to communicate with them. It was also quite difficult to get them to be disciplined and in order. So I thought if I need to do something with them, I would have to give up my life in Germany. I thought it was a big sacrifice and I thought I would do it in a place which is the most fruitful. Many people asked me why I didn’t start this in Punjab or Haryana where there is a sports culture, but I wanted to do it where it is most needed and is most effective.
What kind of opposition did you encounter while trying to start this venture and how difficult was it to convince their parents? In the beginning it wasn’t difficult as it was an afternoon activity. When we started taking them outside their village to Jaipur, they started getting insecure. They started asking questions like why is this German lady coming to this village when she had a good life in Germany. ‘What does she have to do with sports when she is not earning money with this and what is her motive?’ So my Indian brother, who was travelling with us, he made sure that the kids were safe with us. So as time passed the girls started winning matches and got a medal or certificate or even a t-shirt, and then slowly the parents started believing in us. It was a ‘silent revolution’ especially for the girls. Now the girls are playing in hockey skirts, which would be unbelievable two years back.
sufficient anymore. Then I participated in an auto-rickshaw rally. Last year we drove from Jaipur to Chennai and this year we drove from Jaipur to Goa to source funds and also to go to other cities where hockey is played and also to get contacts.
Many people were taken by surprise when they saw a lady riding an auto-rickshaw in Mumbai. How was your entire experience on a three-wheeler? In my culture nobody would ask if a girl or a boy rides an auto, it is only in India you would be questioned because it is a man driven society, even more since a ‘white girl’ is driving an auto-rickshaw. They thought something is wrong and many people were interested why and what is the message behind it all. Especially, in Mumbai there was a big hype because you are not allowed to drive an auto in the inner-city and then we also went to the hockey ground.
What kind of support have you received from the hockey administration in India? The Indian hockey teams are struggling, so how can I expect help from them. If they cannot support the highest level players in the country, they won’t do anything for the grassroot players. In the meantime, I have good connections and that may help us in the future.
Sushil Kadam | ADC
INTERVIEW
Sourcing finance for a project like this is a humongous task, how have you managed this project and keep it up till now? There wasn’t any support or a single rupee from the people. I had to sponsor the entire kit for the kids. I then started a NGO where my friends and family used to give money but that isn’t
India has been known to produce hockey legends; do you think that India has forgotten its roots and what do you think is missing in the game where we haven’t been able to keep up with the rest of the world? The main problem is politics is involved in sports. If you see many of the successful sporting nations, politics is separated from the game. Only sportspersons should lead the administration because otherwise all goes wrong. It is all about money. The German hockey team is number one in the world, but they are not earning money from hockey. They are all doing their jobs or are students but they play with their hearts. They are passionate with what they are doing and this is what is lacking in India.
What are your future plans for your ‘Project Hockey’. You have also tied up with KOOH Sports to take your project to other cities? We are opening our own English medium school in the village. I have imported Astroturf from a German club. My idea is to have a sports centre in that village and post that let’s see, I may look for another village to take my project to. I would be looking to work with them to ensure we have a sound grassroot hockey in the country.

However, world number 28 Jayaram, Gurusaidutt and Varma notched up victories later in the day to keep India afloat in the men's singles event. While Jayaram struggled past world number 71 Riyanto Subagja of Indonesia 22-20 8-21 21-12 in a 49-minute hard-fought battle, Gurusaidutt, ranked 25th, got the better off another local player Andre Kurniawan Tedjono 22-20 21-16. Jayaram will take on fourth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro, who had won
the silver medal at the 2007 World Championship in Kuala Lumpur. Gurusaidutt will meet the winner of the match between seventh seed Dane Jan O Jorgensen and Japan's Kazumasa Sakai. Varma prevailed over Hans-Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark 19-21 21-14 21-15 in a one-hour-fiveminute first round contest. He takes on third seed Chinese Pengyu Du in the pre-quarterfinals. In the women's doubles, Indian pair of Pradnya Gadre and Ashwini Ponnappa beat Mingtian Fu and Lei Yao of Singapore 21-16 15-21 22-20 in 47 minutes.
