not be shifted to any other site, ensured Pramod Hindurao, Chairman, City and Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (CIDCO), on Thursday, following media reports that the airport project had become financially unviable and the site of the project was likely to be shifted as farmers who would be affected were not ready to accept the lower price of the land offered to them earlier. Just a week ago, the muchawaited NMIA project got forest and wildlife clearances form the State Wildlife Board and the National Wildlife Board, enabling early execution of the mega project. But after media reports about shifting the site, the planning agency came forward and gave its clarifications. Briefing media, Hindurao said, “The project is being currently monitored by the

Pramod Hindurao chief and deputy chief ministers of the state and they will soon call a meeting of farmers’ representatives.” The international airport project will come up on around 1,140 hectares of land which will be acquired through acquisition on the basis of 12.5 % developed to be given to land owner apart from cash Continued on pg 8 «

Mumbai civic body to buy four heart-lung machines soon: HC By A Staff Reporter

T

he Bombay High Court was today informed that the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has initiated process to acquire four heart-lung machines for the Paediatric Cardiac Surgery department in civic run hospitals. A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha was

hearing a suo moto public interest litigation following news reports about the ordeal undergone by children waiting for cardiovascular surgery. Over 700 children are waiting to be operated upon. About 20 children died since January 2012 without being operated in the absence of the necessary machines that could’ve saved their lives. As of now, there is only

one such heart-lung machine at KEM hospital. The machine, a critical piece of equipment which takes over the functions of the heart when the organ is removed from a patient’s body during open-heart surgeries, manages to carry out only one or two surgeries a day, leading to waiting periods extending up to two years. This long wait sometimes proves fatal, as was the case of the 20 children.

Senior counsel Milind Sathe, appearing for the Corporation, today told the court that the process has been initiated to acquire four new machines which will be delivered within six weeks. “Two machines will be for KEM hospital and one each for Sion and Nair hospital. A separate ward with 11 beds and an operating room has also been marked inside the KEM Hospital to treat chil-

dren suffering from various illnesses,” Sathe told the Bombay High Court. The bench directed the civic body to state all these details in an affidavit next week. While an open-heart surgery at KEM Hospital costs Rs.60,000, it sets one back by upwards of Rs.3 lakh in any of the privately run hospitals in the city. Each heart-lung machine costs over Rs.1 crore.

He had also resigned to support Advani, but nobody has come so far to request him to withdraw his resignation!

Has the inauguration of Eastern Freeway something to do with the upcoming elections?

Veena Mudra HR manager

The election is fast approaching but it’s cynical to assume that all development work has something to do with politics.

Makarand Shelar Student

Since motorbikes are not allowed on the stretch, it will be rued by a select category of people.

Vrushali Vasaikar Student

There is certainly politics behind it. The monsoon has already set in.

Gopal Saha Journalist

There may be politics as the election is approaching near, but the freeway will help us save time.

The tax, which replaces octroi, has been brought into force in some other cities. Traders are opposed to it, fearing increase in tax burden and harassment. In the meeting with CM on May 24, traders were specifically assured that a separate committee would be formed to discuss the issue, he said.

hree armed robbers allegedly barged into a jewellery shop in Borivli east and decamped with gold worth Rs.2.5 lakh on Thursday evening. According to Sunil Deshmukh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Borivli region, Kiran Borana (40), the owner of Raj Jewellers, was alone in the shop when the robbery took place at 4.30 p.m. The police officers said that Borana’s only employee had left for his village a few days ago. On Thursday, when Borana was cleaning the showcase of his shop, three men walked in, while two of them spoke in Gujarati, one spoke in Marathi. The three men pretended to be customers and asked Borana to show them a chain. While Borana reached out to the counter, the robbers who were carrying choppers attacked his arm causing him to fall on the ground. While Borana lay on the ground unconscious the three robbed the gold necklaces and chains on display worth Rs.2.5 lakh. The three unsuccessfully tried to break open the iron locker which contained 4.5 kgs of gold jewellery. The robbers then and fled the shop on foot.

A few minutes later when Borana gained consciousness, he raised and alarm to call out to his neighbours. The locals rushed Borana to the Mukti Hospital nearby and informed the police about the robbery. Bharat Worlikar, senior police inspector of Kasturba Marg police station said that they have registered a case of robbery against the three unidentified men. The officers also said that since Borana had not installed CCTV cameras in his shop, they would have to rely on his statement and description given by him once he is in the condition to talk. “We have prepared four teams to trace the three men and are also finding out whether they had been informed by someone about the absence of Borana’s employee,” said Worlikar.

Hindurao informed that the project had already received six important approvals from different government agencies (see box). “The work on the NMIA project is likely to start by the end of this year.We will soon float tender to filling the acquired lands,” said Hindurao. He added that farmers are aware that the project will be beneficial for them. “The project will create around 5 lakh new jobs while half of the

Bangladeshi immigrants caught with foreign currency confess to cheating racket By Suresh Golani

n a late Wednesday night operation conducted by a special team from the AntiHuman Trafficking Cell of the Thane (rural) police led by API Atul Aher, 13 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were arrested from an industrial area in Virar (East). However, the team stumbled upon an international currency racket when they found the immigrants to be in possession of Indian and foreign currency (American Dollars) amounting Rs.69,360. Following a tip-off, a police

team under instructions of Thane (SP) Anil Khumbare, swooped down on a tenement near the HDIL Industrial Park in Virar and arrested 13 Bangladeshi nationals who were staying in the country without valid documents. During interrogation, one of the accused, identified as Ashraf Ali (44), a native of Nalokhi village in Shibchar in Bangladesh, admitted that he was a member of a gang that cheated people by keeping only two original foreign currency notes — one on the top and other at the bottom — in a bundle, while the rest were blank papers. Another objection was that the contract was earlier given on a wardwise basis, but this time it was awarded according to primary health centres (PHCs) in the satellite city. House collapses during monsoon or years now, houses have been F collapsing during monsoon in Mumbai, but the BMC appears to hold the view that nothing can be done about it. There are thousands of old buildings in the city and suburbs – some of them built a century ago – which are in a dangerous condition. The BMC issues notice to the residents but that’s all it does. The residents have nowhere to go and so they refuse to move out of the buildings. The landlord-tenant problem continues: the forum does not want to spend money on repairs. Only residents of a few buildings go for repairs or reconstruction. Old buildings which were built at a cost of a few lakhs, now costs crores. Perhaps the owners of the old and dilapidated buildings cannot be blamed if they silently hope that they come down during the monsoon. A new trend on the housing front may change the situation: Builders are offering free accommodation to residents in new buildings which they construct after pulling down old buildings. If this happens on a larger scale, then could be an end to house collapses in Mumbai. The BMC has a big role to play in this regard. Instead of resorting to corrupt practices and extorting money for the granting of permission to builders, it should make things easy for them. It is the permission racket in the BMC that cuts down building activity and leads to house collapse.

irst on Indo-Japanese ties which China, apparently, does not like. Of course, India can also take exception to China’s ties with Pakistan which are much stronger. China, like the United States, wants to use Pakistan for its own political purposes and Islamabad has always shown willingness to be enslaved as long as it can bare its teeth at India. According to the media, the Communist Party of China’s mouthpiece, ‘The Peoples Daily’ has lashed out at Japanese politicians, terming them “petty burglars”. As for India, the paper said, it has, like China “great vision and great wisdom” with India’s ‘great wisdom’ lying “in dealing with China in a calm way, undisturbed by internal and international provocations”. The paper obviously does not know how Li Keqiang’s views on Pakistan expressed in Islamabad have been received in India where the media has played them down. In many ways ‘The Free Press Journal’ (May 22) reflected India’s sentiments when it said that “whether China admits it or not, all of its neighbours view it with suspicion”. China, said the paper, has done nothing to allay their fears and it added: “India refuses to draw the right lessons from its periodic humiliations at the hands of a very aggressive China”. ‘Whatever the inner dynamics of the power structure in Beijing, it is for India to tell the world that it is no push-over when it comes to defending its territorial integrity,’ warned the ‘Free Press Journal’.

To that Mr. Singh further added: “India should neither be a Panda-hugger nor a dragon slayer, but a voice of moderation, liberal politics and equitable economics in Asia – an Indian beacon”. This may, in part, explain why India is cautious of playing up Japanese cooperation. Meanwhile, ‘The New Indian Express’ (May 28) pointed out that Japan is a country with which India does not have any competing national interest, no historical baggage like the 1962 War with China and no simmering ri-

Mr. Das said “Japan is increasingly occupying a static significance” and “defence and security cooperation has gradually emerged as a key factor of India’s strategic and global partnership with Japan and is recognised by both sides as beneficial to peace and prosperity in Asia and the world”. Writing in ‘The Hans India’ (May 24) Kuldip Nayar exposed some of China’ intentions. First Nayar said, China is continuing to ride “a high horse” and wants to “occupy our territory it has usurped”. According to Nayar, China “has treated the entire disputed area under its overall control without negotiating with New Delhi or even indicating specifically which are belongs to it”. “China” he further pointed out, “has made it clear that it is not in favour of having a firm border because an undemarcated border gives it leeway to lay claims on Arunachal Pradesh”. Insisting that New Delhi is in “no position to re-open the Tibet issue”, Nayar sharply pointed out that Beijing “has never kept its word” that was given by former Premier Chou En-lai that “both sides would not attack each other” and that “there is no assurance that it would do so in the future”. Federal front plan just an electoral bargaining chip WEST BENGAL chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s call for a federal front or third front for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections is uninspiring. It is the desperate attempt of regional parties to find an alternative political formation to nonCongress and non-BJP at the national level. It is an old idea which has not worked in the past due to infighting and difference of opinion and ideology between 1996-1998. I strongly feel that regional parties have little to hold them together compared to Congress-led UPA and BJP-led NDA coalition which have prominent ideological foundations, but are also helmed by big national parties around which smaller parties can gravitate. A federal front would essentially see a cabal of opportunistic regional satraps constantly fighting each other for a larger share of the pie. It is difficult to see such a front cobbling together to form a government.

Serena, the shining star

CUNNING PROPOSAL: Mamata Banerjee’s suggestion to form a federal front is a smart strategy as the front can bargain with the UPA or the NDA, whoever is the winner in the 2014 polls. The federal front idea is nothing more than an electoral bargaining chip. — Bhagwan Thadani, Pune

Williams as her second French Open title took her Grand Slam title wins to 16 as she swept aside Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-4 in a brilliant display of power packed tennis.

SERENA WILLIAMS’ significant suc cess in the Singles Championship of the French Open gave her the coveted title after 11 years. She won the coveted trophy in style and the way she jumped and celebrated the victory showed how eager she was to make it big. In 18 years of professional tennis she has won 16 grand slam singles titles and 52 overall in her career. Serena was lying low and was struggling to make a comeback after her illness. Apart from this she is having 13 doubles titles with her sister Venus Williams. The American star made a forceful comeback and came out trumps after recovering from a life threatening disease and kept the carping critics quite. Serena is the shinning star in women’s tennis at the age of 31.

BY winning his fourth consecutive and eighth French Open title, Rafael Nadal has shown that he is the master of clay court. He has four other Grand Slam titles but he is not a dominating force on grass and hard courts. Hats off to Serena Willams, who at the age of 31 subdued the challenge of the spirited Maria Sharapova to wrest the French Open title and her 16th Grand Slam title. It was particularly a bad outing for the Indians as they were out knocked out earlier than expected.

Controlling realty industry THE two real estate regulatory bills will add ‘fuel to the fire’ of the building industry’s problems (completion of projects) as both the Central govt. and the State govt. are passing independent bills seeking to control the accommodation industry. As the situation stands today, thousands of building construction approvals are stuck in various levels with the govt. and the municipal corporation, causing untold damage to flat purchasers. On the contrary, builders are extending 20 per cent/ 80 per cent schemes to flat purchasers where purchasers pay only 20 per cent while booking the flat and balance 80 per cent is payable, without interest, after the project is completed. This scheme is a blessing for flat buyers and hence it is wrong to blame builders for delay in completing the projects as they have to get at least 60 approvals for each project from various authorities. Mutual trust and accountability is the only solution to efficient completion of projects. — K.V. Satyamurty, Mumbai

ATTAGIRL! The feisty Serena Williams struggled for 11 years but finally grabbed the French Open Singles trophy in style.

CR, BMC caught napping THE South-West monsoon showers albeit brought relief from the prolonged scorching heat but it has once again exposed cruelly that the

PEOPLE are extremely sorry to note that the aged leader of BJP, Mr. L.K. Advani has given more importance to his ambition to be the prime minister of India, at least, for six months, than the nation’s wish to see the dashing, daring Narendra Modi on that post for all round national interest for all the coming five years. People also don’t understand how the ambitious Advani can remember the great leader late Shyama Prasad Mookerji who wanted Kashmiri Pandits back in India and also Pakistan-occupied Kashmir back with India, though Advani himself has done absolutely nothing for this noble cause till date. — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali

THE Goa convention of the main opposition party is over but will there be a vertical split in the BJP CR and the BMC did not have the propensity to pay keen attention to the acute problematic areas and take necessary measures prior to the onset of the monsoon but were complacent as usual. Commuters were left in the lurch and had to suffer from the infirmities and the utter disregard of the CR officials to the stark realities. The Railway authorities should look into the matter seriously and take punitive measures against the officers for their laxity, negligence and insensitive attitude to the commuters’ problems. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

BMC hikes water tax THE wife (W), ran out with the bucket as it started raining, here is what happened: Me: Why are you running in the rains? W: BMC is hiking the water tax, let me catch some rain water, I am changing my service provider Me: But look at the colour of the rain water W: It’s better than the “eastman” colour water in our taps Me: But darling, you need to boil this water W: No need. My digestive powers are BMC approved Me: So you won’t pay the hike W: No rain water is cheaper, plus they are giving a bucket free as introductory offer. Me: But this new provider may leave in 4 months W: Then i will plan a strike. i have requested Sharad Rao to plan an andolan for me. Me: God! Battle of ‘paani-pat’ is back

over the nomination of Mr. Narendra Modi as the poll committee chief. If that happens, then what will the rebel BJP members do? Form a party of their own to spoil the chances of the official party candidates? Or, join Congress, but for what sort of gain? Even if the saffron party is voted to power in May 2014 general elections, what is the guarantee that it will remain a single cohesive unit and not split over the allotment of the portfolios at the stage of the govt. formation itself? The diehard supporters of the BJP would certainly like to know the answers to these questions before pressing the button corresponding to the Lotus symbol of their party on the EVM. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz

FINALLY, ghee remains in the or even demolition. There is no statute on the basis of which protection can be given and, consequently permission for demolition is usually the end-result. It is only in the rarest of the rare cases that the cause of preservation and restoration has been upheld. There is immediate need for passing of a Heritage Act. Eastern Freeway deterrent THE Rs.1,700 cr Eastern Freeway has been thrown open to the traffic yesterday. However, being a regular user of the exit portion of this freeway project on the south side at P D’Mello road end, my apprehensions are that this 17 km. dream cruise may meet a frustrating crawl at the city end. At the south exit of this freeway there is a public urinal followed by weighbridge and then along the road most of the time the monstrous huge trailers, cement carrying trucks etc. occupy a major portion of the road, which will cer-

LET us face the reality. There is no legal protection for structures that are not already under the care of Archaeological Survey of India for getting demolition notice. Rahul is no PM material IF Rahul Gandhi thinks he is going to become the next Prime Minister of India, he is living in a fool’s paradise. The Congress has been looting the country. They made false promises before elections and did not fulfil them once they won and came into power. The three Gandhis —Rahul, Priyanka and Sonia made very big speeches before elections, but they were all empty —not one of their promises has been fulfilled so far. Instead, things have become worse after they came to power. And to think we are going to vote for them this time? Not at all! Like his late father, Rajiv, Rahul is not at all fit to become the Prime Minister of India. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili

khichdi. The moment Adavani resigned from the BJP party, very soon big heads of party, started to woo Advani. After lot of efforts, finally they succeeded in bringing back Advani on track. Now the question arises: what has happened to that statement by Advani in his letter: “I no longer have the feeling that this is the same idealistic party created by Dr Mookerji, Deen Dayalji, Nanaji and Vajpayeeji whose sole concern was the country, and its people. Most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas.” Has the party changed to its old version, which he stated? One should always think over seriously many a time before going against anybody, especially in public. Advani resigned openly and then withdrew which amounts to spitting and then licking the spit.

HIDDEN TALENT: Few people know that Priyanka Chopra’s dad, Dr. Ashok Chopra, was a music lover and also a good singer. HEARTFELT condolences to Dr. Madhu Chopra, Priyanka Chopra and Siddharth Chopra on the sad passing away of a very dear and loving family member Dr. Ashok Chopra, following a long-drawn

battle with cancer. Priyanka was passionately attached to her father and she needs to be highly commended for giving her father the very best of hospitalisation and treatment in the best of hospitals. She was after all the little daughter of Dr Ashok, who was very much music minded and he was a good singer too. I had the privilege of interacting with Dr Ashok while I was working with Priyanka, handling her fan mails. He had an helping nature and always rose to needy causes. Priyanka had offered sincere prayers for her loving father to recover but as it is said life is not in our hands. We can only pray. May Almighty God give fortitude to the bereaved family and rest the noble soul in eternal peace in his heavenly abode. — K.V. Raman, Malad

Suraj Pancholi sent to judicial custody Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Jadhav sends Suraj to JC till June 27 By Zuber Ansari

O

n Thursday afternoon, the prime accused in the Jiah Khan Suicide case, Suraj Pancholi, son of Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi was produced before the court and was sent into judicial custody till June 27. The bail application is likely to come up for hearing before a Sessions Court tomorrow, sources said. The prosecuting attorney said that Suraj had deleted messages sent to him by Jiah via cell phone and that the prosecution wants to retrieve said messages in order to investigate the angle that he abetted her suicide. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Jadhav rejected the remand application for extending police custody of 21-year-old Suraj. While seeking extension of police custody for Suraj, prosecutor A.K. Pancharane said police had come across the word ‘rape’ in the six-page letter purportedly written by Jiah to her boyfriend and they wanted to probe in this direc-

tion. The police remand application also said that the investigators wanted to take samples of Suraj’s handwriting to prove the letters written by him to Jiah.

Suraj’s counsel Zamir Khan submitted that police had already recorded statements of witnesses, including Jiah’s mother and sister and also the Pancholi family’s servant.

He said Suraj’s house had been searched and letters and electronic gadgets were recovered. Hence, he argued, custodial interrogation of Suraj was not required any further.

« BOOK LAUNCH A JOURNEY: TRACING PHALKE BY KAMAL SWAROOP COmpiling fragments Of phalke life As we are all aware that Indian cinema recently completed a century. With the many celebrations to mark this event, another one adds to the list which is in the shape of literature. National Film Development Corporation has earmarked the 100 years of cinema by cosponsoring the publication of the iconic book, A Journey: Tracing Phalke, The Man And His Times (1870 to 1944), compiled by filmmaker Kamal Swaroop, which is an eponymous compilation tracing Dadasaheb Phalke’s life span with rare details on his schooling, places he visited, people he met — all giving an insight into the artistic mind of the imaginative genius that Phalke was. This limited edition book has been put together as a text based visual treat that brings forth various untouched facets of Dadasaheb, also called The Father of Indian Cinema, as well as the milieu around those years. The compilation by Kamal started back in the pre-internet age. Kamal says, “While researching Phalke, we hear of a missing autobiography which he wrote and had dictated it to his wife, Saraswati and daughter Mandakini, where he spoke about his dreams, fantasies and innovations of those times. I wanted to reconstruct that missing book. A pair of scissors and a bottle of glue always with me, I went looking for images to put on my typed pages. I collected fragments by making photocopies from libraries or by mining art catalogues.” This book is a piece of art, whimsical in a beautiful way, tracing the footsteps of a legend and trying to bring his experiences to life again. This one’s definitely for the collectors. *To book a copy of this limited edition book, email at thirdpoliceman007@gmail.com

hose who love to read are going to go gaga for this event! Asia’s first nonfiction festival is stopping over in India this month, centered on the theme: Be Bold Stay Real. It will see experts coming together to talk about non-fiction subjects such as health, fitness, cookery, cinema, lifestyle, politics and much more. The festival will take place in parallel sessions in two conference halls. There will also be a space with books for sale and book signing sessions. “Non-fiction as a category, save in a few niche categories such as self-improvement books, has not received sufficient attention in India. The initial response to this conclave shows that the right time has come,” says Parthasarathi Swami, managing editor, India Knowledge @ Wharton. Held over three days, there are going to be several stimulating sessions from writers. There

will also be book launches, such as one by Vijay Santhanam called My Stroke of Luck and Directors Cut: 50 Major Filmmakers of the Modern Era by K. Raghavendra. Although it’s a non-fiction festival, it will also act as a platform to create awareness and discuss social issues, such as LGBT in society. Festival director, Kumaar Bagrodia tells us, “I have always been a great enthusiast of nonfiction as this is the format that mirrors real life happenings, circumstances and connects the reader to reality. Formerly, there was no festival solely dedicated to non-fiction works and so, I decided to give this genre its due and decided to share it with the citizens of Mumbai. The festival is a culmination of all our efforts and love for the genre and I would like to thank our partners and speakers for making it possible. We are very excited and eager to see the response of our

festival among our visitors.” The festival is partnered by Knowledge@Wharton, The American Center & Library, Harvard Business Review, Crossword Book Stores, IndiaSpend, Harper Collins, Sage, Jaico, Random House, Hachette, Penguin, Aiesec, Westland and the British Council. Vinay Hebbar, managing director of Harvard Business School Publishing, agrees, adding that the festival will promote non-fiction authors and their ideas in India. He says, “This will give readers an opportunity to listen to, learn and engage with top Indian and international minds.” When June 21 to 23, from 11am to 7pm Where Nehru Centre, Dr. Annie Besant Road, Worli Contact Register at www.IndiaNonFictionFestival.com

Dinesh Thakur’s theatre group Ank presents its 80th production titled Mitro Marjani. An adaptation of celebrated novelist Krishna Sobti’s Mitro Marjani — Woman of Passion, the play is being presented in a unique story-telling format. Directed by Devendra Raj Ankur, the play shatters the image of revolutionary women upholding their ideals. The heroine is a controversial one, embodied with love, grit, passion and fertility. The female protagonist playing Mitro Marjani, Preeta Mathur, says, “Krishna Sobti’s Mitro makes a bold statement on female sexuality. Mitro has the audacity to taunt a closed society, but at the same time the courage to change her attitude when necessary. The novel is staged by Devendra Raj Ankur in his own unique story-telling format which does complete justice to Sobti’s rich Hindi text.” Tickets are priced at `250. Can we really judge a chocolate by its exquisite wrapping? Rhea Dhanbhoora finds out whether Patchi lives up to its designer name

>> Patchi has a range of attractive baby (left) and gift trays (middle) as well as gift boxes (bottom)

Where Palladium, Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel ContaCt www.patchi.com

Think of luxury chocolates. Does your mind swell with the same names as mine? I’ve been fortunate enough to sample some great chocolate and when I think of extravagant chocolate I’d save up to buy, I crave bonbons from Pierre Hermé, Godiva’s chocolate pearls, Anthon Berg liqueurs, chocolate seashells from Guylian, white chocolate from Valrhona… the list is endless. Patchi’s prices and packaging compete with the best of the best. So, was I going to add the Lebanese luxury brand to my list of chocolate dreams? At over `4,000 for a kilo, they better be spectacular. Especially since they’re a leading luxury brand in the Middle East and tout their ingredients as all-natural. The Patchi store is like an art gallery, with chocolates lining the walls, pretty gift baskets, elaborate glass vases overflowing with delicately wrapped treats, baby hampers and a kids section. Yes, children get an entire section! Individual bars cost `300 and `600, while a box of dark chocolate in different cocoa percentages costs a whopping `1,500 for a tiny box that I could finish in a single sitting. Keeping with their Lebanese roots, they have nougat and Lebanese sweets that cost `3,000 and `4,000 a kilo. Their vases and decorative trays range from `6,000 and `7,000 upwards and make good wedding gifts. The wrapping for their baby trays is a dream, but they will cost you `10,000 onwards. The packaging is as impressive as the little stamps on the chocolates, but the true test is how it tastes. I held the precious piece of chocolate for quite a while, admiring the thick silver wrapping that screamed luxury and unwrapping it slowly, so as not to dent or damage the treasure inside. But, a tiny bite left me disappointed. The chocolate had a shiny, solid texture and didn’t feel as light to the touch as most good chocolates do, but I was willing to see past that, since the all-natural Green & Black’s don’t look impressive at first glance either. But, taste did not meet expectation. They failed to combine the milk, cream and cocoa into a melt-inyour-mouth treat and I wouldn’t pick up the chocolate, even at a lower price. Patchi is a visual treat, focuses well on packaging and has top-notch service. But, the chocolates don’t taste as good as they look. Sadly, I won’t be adding it to my dream chocolate team.

« STORE REVIEWS: PATCHI CHOCOLATES & SOULFLOWER

GOING

natural We love handmade products, but did we love Soulflower’s new outlet in Malad? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you more

I

f you’ve ever browsed for beauty products online, Soulflower has to have caught your attention at some time or the other. The brand pops up on websites and in retail chains, so we weren’t expecting any surprises when we visited their mall outlet at Inorbit in Malad. The 100% vegetarian company makes all its handmade products out of organic material and believes in healthy living and ecological preservation. Their range is not extensive, so a single sweep over the small outlet will let you see it all. However, the variety of soaps is large and the price ranges from `200 to `400. They have shampoo and conditioner bars, anti-ageing bars, banana skinshake soap, chocolate soap, basil soap and a range of flavours that include lavender (delicious!), rose, lemongrass (also a big hit), strawberry, mango and mint. If you want to try something different and you value the aesthetics of your bath products, you’ll love their Hot Pink Cupcake with Strawberry and Vanilla, a `400 soap shaped like the delicious sugary treat. After the soaps, we moved on to the bath salts. A little less essential, but worth the price tag of `350 as the bottles are larger than the ones we’re used to seeing. They have every

flavour under the sun, including specials such as Ocean Blue and Desert Sands. They also have massage oils, but they seem pricey at `450 for a small bottle; though flavours such as ylang ylang and grapefruit will fuel your curiosity. The essential oils, which include flavours such as Dreamcatcher are priced at `250 and `350, while the carrier oil includes cold pressed jojoba oil to help prevent split ends and wheatgerm oil to prevent dry skin. They’re priced at `250 and `350. The body milks were as delicious smelling as the soaps and at `200 a bottle, they’re on our shopping list for sure. You can also pick up a gift set (`450 onwards) or customise your own. The staff at Soulflower is very helpful and knowledgeable, so you won’t be making any erroneous purchases here. They also have an interesting section where they will tell you what products suit your sun sign, a section that features prominently on their website too. As with most organic brands, they have pot pourri and candles. While we weren’t blown away by Soulflower, we lingered over the products and considered buying several. Natural products are always good for your skin and these look and smell good. So, go ahead and shop your heart out at their newest outlet.

A decent brew

Beer drinkers have to pay the newly opened The Barking Deer in Lower Parel a visit, if only for their extensive beer menu, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

hen we heard that a microbrewery was opening up in the city, we were excited. Bangalore has Bier Club and Pune has The Irish Village, so it’s about time we get one too. Hence, we were understandably gutted when we learned that while the restaurant is up and running… the microbrewery is not. They’re still waiting for their license. So, we settled into the warm, woody restaurant for a good dinner and some choice beer. Their namesake, the barking deer, is a species native to India and is visible across the restaurant on signs and on their menu. It’s not necessary but it’s a quirky touch that will make the otherwise run-off-the-mill place (minus the brewery) memorable. They have a lot of space and the brewery setup is impressive. Seating is your typical wood based, slightly uncomfortable chairs but the allday restaurant looks like a place that could get popular as a bar and restaurant. Its location, bang opposite blueFROG, and the cheaper prices are a plus point. Food at The Barking Deer is not spectacular, but it’s worth the price and a good accompaniment with the beer. We suggest avoiding the sweet, cherry flavoured beer unless you like super sweet drinks. The German wheat beer won us over, but you can pick your favorite from an extensive

list that costs anywhere upwards of `500 for imported varieties of light ale, wheat beer, stout and lager. Our beer was accompanied by some easy to digest pub bites. The Classic Buffalo Wings with blue cheese dip (`325) were delicious, but the Charamula Prawns (`425), while coated with delicious flavours, could have been cooked a little better as they were slightly rubbery. The Char-frilled Cilantro Paneer (`275) was not melt-in-your-mouth but didn’t fail our tastebuds. Their starters are heavy, filling and we love the quantity – you won’t go hungry at The Barking Deer. The main course is as filling and definitely a step above the pub bites. The Pilsner Drowned Lamb Shanks (`550) with crisp, salted rosemary potatoes and garlic spinach was our favourite dish of the night. For seafood lovers, the Coriander Rubbed Tiger Prawns with garlic cous cous (`650) is a great dish to order and value for money. However, the desserts here are disappointing. The Cappuccino Crème Brule (`300), was just okay and the Three Berries Cheesecake (`300) was too dense. We’d visit again for the good food, great prices and beer options. We’re waiting for the microbrewery to open for our next visit, so we can give you our two-bit about whether it’s been worth the anticipation.

Piccoli Tortini in Bandra has introduced a new carte du jour consisting of savoury items. Priyanka Singh brings you her verdict

Piccoli Tortini is predominantly a patisserie, but it recently brought in major changes to its menu and now it can safely be called a restaurant and bakery. And, when we visited their plush interiors occupied by swish upholstery, pricey marble flooring, chandeliered ceiling with gilded cornice, our aim was to rate their savoury items. The new additions consist of panini, salads, pizzas and pastas. Apart from that, they have desserts, beverages, special coffees and teas. We started with two beverages: the Iced Lemon Green Tea (`125) and Iced Coffee (`185). Rarely do restaurants offer iced green tea and this one was a sheer delight. It was refreshing, with the right amount of lemon and sweetness. The Iced Coffee, however was too sweet for my liking. The adorable vanilla cupcake (`75) tasted as impressive as it looked. But, it was expensive for its size. The chocolate macaroon (`60) didn’t disappoint either. We then ordered a unique combination of Chickpea & Couscous salad (`245) which had tomatoes, basil leaves, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It was tasty, healthy and filling. Next up

>> The panini (left) and pasta (right) at Piccoli Tortini (far right) were tasty but overpriced was the Classic Tomato Mozzarella Panini (`195) with fresh basil and mozzarella sandwiched between whole wheat bread. The dish was simple, light and delicious, but had just four (twobite sized) pieces of panini. We then tried the Shrimp pasta in vodka sauce (`395); a distinctive dish but once again overpriced. The shrimp was fresh and the pasta sauce was rich. But, there were just three pieces of shrimp! Our last order comprised of Hazelnut mousse (`125) and Opera cake (`100), not new to the

menu but they sounded too good to resist. The mousse was creamy, but we couldn’t detect the hazelnut flavour. The Opera cake was layers of almond sponge cake soaked in coffee syrup, layered with coffee butter cream and covered in chocolate glaze — heavenly to say the least. Piccoli Tortini in Italy means small bites but the restaurant has taken its name too literally. It is high on taste and quality, but similar in its price. However, some dishes on the menu are unique and deserve the occasional splurging.

>> (Left) Patuxai is Laos’ rather modern victory monument. (Above) Transport through the city is fun-filled

>> (Left to right) The city’s oldest Buddhish temple Wat Si Saket, Ping Kai at the Ban Anou Food Market and the promenade along the Mekong Riverfront

Best of both worlds I t’s a pleasant morning with a slight breeze blowing in from across the river. I am sitting at a wrought iron table under the candy-striped awnings of a cosy café on the bougainvillea-lined Rue François Nginn, tucking into a typically French hamn-cheese croque monsieur sandwich and a green salad dressed with a tangy lemonmustard vinaigrette. “Would you like a café au lait to finish your breakfast off with?” the waiter asks me as I signal for the cheque by pretending to write in the air. You’d be forgiven for imagining the above scene being played out somewhere along the banks of the River Seine in Paris. Au contraire, I couldn’t have been further away from the City of Lights. Try Vientiane, Laos for starters. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to replace the Seine with the mighty Mekong. Yes, the legacy of Laos’ French rule is amply evident all over this leafy FrancoLoatian city that sits daintily on the banks of the meandering Mekong River with Thailand peeping over from across its placid waters. A compact, tiny little city laid out in a very navigable grid-like pattern; it’s perfect for exploring on foot. Vientiane puts its charms on you the minute you land on its terra firma. So, armed with my list of things to do, I wandered off in no particular direction, happy with the fact that it is virtually impossible to get lost in a city of such diminutive proportions. A short five minute walk from my hotel along the Rue Setthathirat (which is one of the city’s main arterial roads) and I found myself gobsmacked at the sight of the

Vientiane, the capital of Laos, South East Asia’s only land-locked country, is an interesting mélange of both colonial French and traditional Laotian cultures that Raul Dias was recently privy to

stunning grey and white Presidential Palace, with its well-manicured lawns and typically French colonial architecture. As the public isn’t permitted to go inside, I had to make do with a couple of photographs surreptitiously taken from outside, dodging the patrol guard’s hard stares. Adjacent to the palace, the ambrosial settings of the Wat Si Saket seemed to beckon me to come have a dekko. As the city’s oldest Buddhist temple, Wat Si Saket was commissioned by King Anouvong in 1818 to house the over 2,000 silver and ceramic Buddha images that each have a niche built into the temple’s interior walls to hold them. Sitting in the garden for a good half an hour, I let the chirping of birds drown out the din from the main road outside and took in the moment of blissful nothingness. Next on my agenda was to test the veracity of the claim of a monument being Vientiane’s answer to Paris’ Arc de Triomphe. Situated at the top end of Rue Lan Xang, Patuxai is Laos’ rather modern victory monument, finished in 1968, using concrete donated by the Americans to construct a new airport for Vientiane. But instead, the Laotian government chose to build this Arc de Triomphe doppelganger that is today known as Anousavali (memory) Monument

FACT FILE Getting there

There are no direct flights from India to Laos, but you can take a flight to Bangkok in neighbouring Thailand, from where there are several daily flights and buses to Vientiane that don’t cost much. And what’s even better, is that visas for Laos are available on arrival.

When to visit

Vientiane is a great destination to visit all year round. But June to January are the most pleasant months, while February to May are hot and humid.

Accommodation

You are never too far away from superb, value-for-money hotels that almost always include breakfast and are spotlessly clean. Tidiness seems to be a national obsession in Laos. Some inexpensive options are: • Mali Namphu Guest House (www.malinamphu.com) • Saysouly Guest House (www.saysouly.com) • Vayakorn Guest House (www.vayakorn.com)

in honour of the Laotian soldiers annihilated in World War II. I couldn’t help but notice the Indian influences in its decorative elements that employed the use of the mythical halfbird, half-women beings called kinnaris and the depiction of Vishnu, Brahma and Indra on the ceiling of the structure’s inner dome. While I’m still debating its Arc de Triomphelike aspirations, Patuxai sure is a stellar symbol of Laotian architecture and national pride. Another thing that this city prides itself on is its cuisine, and there is no better place than the riotous Ban Anou Food Market near Vientiane’s Chinatown, off Rue Chao Anou to get some Laotian delicacies. My aural, nasal and visual senses were assaulted all at once by dishes like the basil-scented pork salad called láap, curries and sticks of ping kai or barbecue chicken pieces that are all best chased with a few swigs from a frosty can of the country’s pride and joy a.k.a. Beerlao. For my ‘One Day in Vientiane’ curtain call, I chose to wander down the (concrete!) banks of the Mekong where couples and families come at dusk to promenade and watch the sun give up its prime position to the moon as she lights up the huge statue of Quai Fa Ngum — the last king of Laos. It is here that time seems to take a sabbatical of its own, as the gentle chants from a nearby Buddhist shrine merge with the strains of an accordion playing busker wearing a jaunty beret. And strangely, it doesn’t seem incongruous. But then, how can it, when Vientiane itself is a city harmoniously straddling two worlds at the same time…

Weakness Persists

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (June 14, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

PEVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Thursday (June 13, 2013) a net 61.10 points (1.06%) and closed at the 5699 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5709 points level on weak global cues. It then rose and registered the day’s high at the 5729 points level at 10.08 a.m. The index then declined sharply and turned into a range bound movement until 11.15 a.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 5683 points level at 11.35 a.m. The index then rose marginally and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 47 points and closed a point below the psychologically important 5700 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 41 were losers, while just 9 stocks closed in the green. All the sectoral indices closed in the red. Heavy selling was witnessed in auto, realty, healthcare and power stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 5.68%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 358 were gainers, 1026 were losers and 58 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI fell and crossed below the 30 level and is now declining (negative if it continues). MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative). ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line and both lines are diverging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is increasing in strength.

The next support is at the 5610 points level. Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 5965 points level. The next resistance is at the 6078 points level. Pivot Point Analysis: For intraday traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5704 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5678. Support (2) = 5657. Resistance (1) = 5725. Resistance (2) = 5751.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:

On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive doji pattern This indicates that the indecisiveness amongst investors continues. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the index is below the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day’s moving averages, while the 5, 15 and 25 days moving averages are declining and also negatively trended. Further, the velocity parameters too continue to indicate weakness. Both these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major support level at the 5673 points level. There is a possibility that the index could find some support and reverse from there. However, if it declines below it, then a further decline could be expected. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 5801) Negative Is below its 15-day average (at 5940) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 6000) Negative. Is below its 200-day average (at 5797) Negative. Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market with a negative bias. Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5673 points level. Adoption of the Equator Principles is part of IDFC’s goal of contributing to Nation Building in an environmentally and socially sustainable

manner. IDFC has always been a pioneer in the field of environment risk management. Sugar Industry’s Net Losses Could Cross Rs.10 billion

T

he Indian sugar industry’s net losses are expected to increase to over Rs.10 billion in Sugar Season (SS) 2012-13 (October to September) due to the widening gap between sugarcane and sugar prices” says CRISIL Research, in a just released report on the sector. According to it “Both sugar production and mill profitability will remain highly volatile as a result of this growing price disparity. This issue can be resolved only by linking sugarcane prices to the prices of endproducts“. Over the last three seasons (2010-11 to 2012-13), the average price paid by mills for cane has increased at 14% CAGR, whereas sugar prices have gone up by only 3% annually. In India, sugar prices are determined by demand-supply dynamics, whereas sugarcane prices are regulated by the Central and state governments. The impact of this incongruity between the increase in prices of inputs and end-products is reflected in the balance sheets of 74 companies (together accounting for about 50%

of domestic sugar production) analysed by CRISIL Research. Nearly 40% of them posted net losses in SS 2011-12, and about 30% had interest cover of less than 1 times, up from 17% in SS 2009-10. Thus, the proportion of companies finding it difficult to service their interest is increasing. For SS 2013-14, the Central government has announced a 24% hike in the minimum price payable for sugarcane – the Fair and Remunerative Price (F&RP) – whereas as per CRISIL Research’s estimates, the increase in sugar prices is likely to be only 8-9%. The financial performance of sugar mills will, therefore, deteriorate. The worst hit will be mills in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where the state governments announce a State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane that is higher than the F&RP. In October 2012, the Rangarajan Committee had recommended that the SAP should be abolished and 70% of revenues from the sale of sugar and its by-products should be shared with farmers. The government is yet to act on this recommen-

dation. “Although recent reform measures on the marketing front and increased impetus on blending of ethanol with petrol will provide some relief to mills, cane pricing still remains the key issue. Linking sugarcane prices to end-product prices is critical for safeguarding the long-term financial health of the industry. In the last three seasons ending SS 2012-13, the ratio of sugarcane costs to revenues from the sale of sugar and its byproducts has soared to 76-79% from an average of 67% in the previous decade, pushing several mills into losses,” says Ajay Srinivasan, Director, Industry Research, CRISIL Research. Rationalising sugarcane pricing will also help in reducing the volatility in sugar production and farmer income. “Sugarcane arrears and diversion of cane for other purposes have influenced sugar production. Linking sugarcane prices to endproduct prices will result in more efficient transmission of price signals to farmers and thereby help curb volatility in sugar production to some extent,” he adds.

Buy Bharti , Sell Idea, Says ICICI Sec By Dominic Rebello

I

nvestors should “Switch from Idea Cellular (Idea) to Bharti Airtel (BAL), as we believe BAL’s valuation with respect to Idea has turned quite attractive. BAL is currently trading at FY14 EV/EBITDA of 6.0x as compared to Idea’s 8.2x, a discount of ~27%,“says an ICICI Securities Equity Research Report: Telecom: Sector update According to it “After adjusting for towers and enterprise business on a like-to-like basis, Idea‘s mobility business is commanding a 37% premium valuation — which we believe is highly unjustified as both companies face similar pricing environment and regulatory payouts are only higher for Idea. On an YTD basis, Idea’s stock has outperformed BAL by over 40%. While, Idea has been gaining revenue market share, BAL has stabilized its market share and is better invested for data with BWA investments. Given the steep out performance by Idea, we recom-

mend investors to shift to BAL. We maintain BUY on BAL and downgrade Idea to REDUCE as its valuations are expensive. We maintain our positive stance on Indian mobility but are wary of regulatory hurdles which fail to subside.” Elaborating on its analysis, it says “BAL scores over Idea on regulatory risks with nine of Idea’s licenses coming up for renewal by 2016 in addition to spectrum obtained in seven circles in the recent 1800MHz auction. This is as opposed to seven circles up for renewal for BAL by 2016. We estimate an impact of Rs30/share for Idea (22% of our target price) on account of regulatory risks as opposed to Rs40/share for BAL (11% of target price). ICICI Sec believes that BAL better invested for data uptake with the company having 2100MHz (3G) spectrum in 13 circles and 2300MHz (4G) spectrum in eight circles (overall 18 out of 22 circles with 3G or 4G spectrum). This is as opposed to 3G coverage in 11 circles for Idea. While

data adoption rate is currently low in India (~6.5% contribution to total revenues), both the companies are reporting strong data uptick of 10%+ QoQ growth in the past few quarters. “We believe data could be the next growth driver for the sector driven by higher smart phone penetration; we thereby believe BAL is better placed to capitalize on the data front.” As regard BAL’s underperformance , the ICICI Sec believes that it is “an opportunity and recommends the pair trade. BAL has underperformed Idea by over 40% YTD. We recommend long Bharti short Idea as pair trade. Currently, the stock is trading at 27% discount to Idea, which we believe is unjustified given BAL’s lower regulatory risks and better positioning to leverage on data opportunity. We maintain Buy on BAL with a target price of Rs 385/share and downgrade Idea to Reduce (from ADD) owing to its rich valuation with a revised target price of Rs136/share.

Mythopoeia

To be fair, Superman is not a very original character. Mythology is rife with heroes who come from far-off lands or, as in Superman’s case, from far-off worlds. Like Moses of old who was sent across the Nile in a basket, Superman comes to earth, having crossed an ocean of stars in a rocket ship. Like Krishna, raised by cow-herders in a hamlet, Kal-El (that’s Superman’s birth name) is raised in a small village, aptly named Smallville, by a Midwestern couple. As he grows older he discovers he is endowed with powers beyond those of mortal men. Superman, like Jesus and Hercules, often shows signs of greatness in his boyhood, marking himself as a saviour of men. When he is older, Superman, like Theseus, travels to the big city; Theseus to Athens, Superman to Metropolis. And so begin the adventures...

Agnus Dei

‘Behold, I teach you the Superman,’ wrote Friedrich Nietzsche. But what’s there to teach about Superman? After all, he’s just ink on paper. For all the guff this writer can throw at you, that’s all he’s ever going to be. He can’t save us from poverty nor bring in world peace, because he’s just not real. But, like the Egyptians who immortalised their solar god Horus through hieroglyphs, we have eternalised Superman on the yellowing pages of old comic books. “He can fly!” says 10-year-old Dhruv, who like so many kids wears the Sshield glyph on his t-shirts. “I like Superman because he fights reverse Superman (that’s Bizarro, a strange clone of Superman) and wears blue which is my favourite colour,” explains he. But that’s a 10-yr-old’s explanation. Surely, older people cannot like Superman. Advertising professional Rakeysh Arora does not agree. “I still read Superman. Most of my friends from school outgrew him. After all he comes from a planet named after an inert gas (Krypton), and lives in a world of primary colours. He looks like a strongman and can fight pretty much anyone,” says he. “We live in a very stark world, so looking at Superman and his likes enforces our belief in good. In ‘his world’, Superman’s presence illuminates people, makes them compassionate and kind. The real world is however quite the opposite. Our leaders lie through the nose, there is injustice everywhere and democracy, as we know it, has failed. Superman, like much of fiction, stands for all those lost virtues of truth, justice and democracy,” adds Rakeysh. “My earliest childhood memory of a superhero has to be Superman. Kids at that time were oblivious to the existence of other superheroes. I recollect tying a bed sheet or a towel as a cape and underwear over my pants and pretend to fly all over the place. In my Goan hometown I played ‘superman’ with my cousins; one of us would be ‘supes’ and he’d punch the daylight out of us the bad guys,” says media professional Cleston D’Costa. Continued on pg 25 «

ALWAYS THE FIRST Action Comics no.1 (June 1938) is the first comic book ever to feature the Jerry Siegel/Joe Shuster creation, Superman. The cover image has been relentlessly parodied, homaged and spoofed in the seven decades since. The book is widely considered both the beginning of the super-hero genre and has been touted as being the most valuable comic book of all time. In 2011 it became the only comic to have sold for more than $2 million for a single original copy. The original cover price for this book was a mere 10 cents. Talk about inflation, eh!

DO I LOOK OLD? Superman has turned 75. From his start as a socialist battler in the Thirties to the super patriot of the Forties on through the chummy family man of the Fifties, to right of centre figure of the Eighties, all the way into the more politically complex 21st century, the character has lasted through seven tumultuous decades. The character, as we know and love, first appeared in the pages of Action Comics No.1 cover dated June 1938, that’s 75 exact years to this month. As luck would have it, Man of Steel, the latest in the Superman movie franchise, also releases today. Prathmesh Kher looks into what makes the character so popular. How is it that kids, many who have never picked up a book, know of comics’ oldest superhero? Heck! Even that word borrows from Superman. SUPERMAN’S PHILOSOPHY What would be the Man of Steel’s one message to the world; his philosophy as it were, encapsulated, in one sentence. The answer appears in October 1962, ‘The last days of Superman’ storyline where Superman writes his message to the world on the lunar surface. “Do good to others and every man can be a Superman.”

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER Superman has always loved Lois Lane. It’s as simple as that. There have been others like Lana Lang and Lori Lemaris, but the intrepid, strong willed, forward thinking Lois Lane has always been the true love of the Man of Steel. Through her varying depictions over the years, Lois Lane has always been a modern, freethinking woman, capable of holding her own alongside Superman aka Clark Kent.

A HERO, ALWAYS Christopher Reeve (1952 – 2004) portrayed Superman in the classic 1978 movie. He singularly defined the hero, with his charm and ease in the performance. Unfortunately, Reeve became a quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition. But he remained steadfast through the tragedy. His grace and courage post-accident has made his name synonymous with Superman’s.

ENEMY MINE Superman’s archnemesis has always been Lex Luthor. Through the seven decades of history, Luthor’s motivations have changed quite a bit. He has been a corrupt business mogul, a mad scientist, even a ‘contractor’ for the government. But through it all, ‘Luthor’ has remained the same. He is all the pettiness, misery and self-loathing that humans can muster. If Superman represents our positive, altruistic and selfless side then Luthor most certainly is the negative, narcissistic and selfish end of the spectrum. Like Ravan to Rama, theirs is a ceaseless, timeless struggle between man’s two natures.

ESSENTIAL READING Superman wants you to reads his comics. A shortlist of some of the Man of Steel’s greatest storylines. 1. All-Star Superman (pictured here) 2. Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? 3. Superman: Birthright 4. Superman For All Seasons 5. The Death and Return of Superman

“Perhaps, Shaktimaan has been a more benevolent hero in India especially in the hinterlands. The hero worship that Superman has enjoyed in the west is almost negligent here,” adds he. “We always want a very powerful, very benevolent hero, who is always accessible, always available, appears at the right time in the right place, and saves us,” says Dr. Harish Shetty. “Superman is that exaggerated version of the altruistic hero, a messiah, a soldier, an arbitrator and a guide all wrapped in one. Like the Indian view of gods who came to rescue man, or an amplified variant of the Bollywood hero who saves the day and defeats the enemy. Till the time human beings do not believe they are or can be immortal, such characters will continue to exist in literature,” he adds.

This is man, and Superman!

POST FROM KRYPTON Below is an image of a U.S. postage stamp of Superman issued in 2006. The image on the stamp, which costs 39 cents a piece, is a definitve depiction of the Man of Steel and was drawn by Curt Swan. Among his other credits, Swan was recognised the world over for being the artist who drew Superman for three whole decades, from the mid1950’s uptil 1986.

“I'm lying in bed counting sheep when all of a sudden it hits me. I conceive a character like Samson, Hercules and all the strong men I heard tell of rolled into one. Only more so,” said Jerry Siegel (1914-1996), who co-created Superman with Joe Shuster (19141992), of his enduring creation. Siegel and Shuster have passed away, as have many others who worked on the character, writers, editors, artists, colourists and others, but Superman lives on. So much ‘Superman’ gets proliferated via comics, live-action TV shows, animated TV shows, live-action movies, animated movies, home video, radio shows, franchising in the form of caps, bats, shirts, lapels and the list is as endless as a true geek’s comic book collection. In conclusion, methinks Superman is simply that part of us that wishes we could rip our shirt off and go headlong into the bully who picks on the little guy. He is us, magnified through the prism of fantasy. Mild-mannered Clark Kent is that disguise that all great men hide beneath; the guise of humility. For who but Superman, who can do anything, would be modest enough to mask all that power under a pair of glasses and a smile.

what is essentially a paperthin disguise. The word, like superhero, borrows from Superman, in this case, his alter-ego mild mannered reporter Clark Kent.

THE PLAYERS Superman has been portrayed through a myriad mediums, including cinema. Here’s a short list of actors who have donned the red cape of Kal-El. Kirk Alyn in the 40s, George Reeves in the 5-’s tv show, the inimitable Christopher Reeve was followed by Dean Cain in the 90’s tv series. In the 21st century, Brandon Routh acted in Superman Returns and Henry Cavill will been seen in the Man of Steel. John Newton and Gerard Christopher played Superboy, while Tom Welling acted as a young wet behind the ears Clark Kent.

pinion is divided on whether Sooraj Panscholi is to be blamed for Jiah Khan’s suicide, but the bigger issue is the bunch of star brats, who strut around the city with a sense of entitlement. That ‘don’t you know who I am?” arrogance that comes with their parents’ stardom. They know as soon as they are able to understand subtle differences in people’s behavior depending on status, that they are above (not necessarily better) than normal people and they have had this privilege handed to on a platter by a genetic lottery. They don’t have to do anything to deserve it.

RINGSIDE VIEW Deepa Gahlot Because so much attention and adulation is automatically offered to celebrities— much more to A-List stars— that even a child can understand that they are not ordinary people. That they can jump queues, demand most-favoured status and get it; they have the admiration of

their friends and peers without effort, and, when they so desire, an easy entry into this charmed world of fame and wealth, because Bollywood not just endorses nepotism, it thrives on it. In the old days, stars went out of the way to project dignity and courtesy, so that they could not be accused of being ill bred. But today’s stars are expected to be obnoxious, or what’s the point of stardom? And what will their kids learn when their parents are hardly models of good behavior? (Aditya Panscholi is far from a paragon of decorum.) Speak to parents whose kids study in school or college (the few that do enter college) with star brats, and they will tell you how spoilt rotten those kids are, since their parent’s wealth and star status accords them the right to be leaders of small packs of mini-sycophants.

nown as a highly skilled actress, Tisca Chopra is well known for her portrayal of the mother of a dyslexic child in Taare Zameen Par ,which won her awards and accolades including a National Award, a Filmfare and a V. Shantaram Award nominations. She followed it up with the award winning Firaaq. She subsequently featured in films like Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji, 404 & 10ml Love. Now comes her most ambitious film Ankur Arora Murder Case. We spoke to the beautiful lady about her forth-

coming film.

What is ‘Ankur Arora Murder Case’ all about? It’s a medical thriller about medical negligence in which my son Ankur Arora who has to undergo a simple appendix operation gets killed because the doctor played by Kay Kay Menon operates on the boy even though his stomach is full with biscuits where as the stomach needs to be completely empty at the point of the operation.

What is the character sketch of the role? I play a Erin Brokovich kind of a character who fights a suit against the hospital for medical negligence to claim damages and bring the erring doctor to book.

What made you accept the film? First of all, it’s a Vikram Bhatt production and the director Suhail Tatari is a sensitive director and my role is very powerful and so I accepted the film. How was it like working on the film? The entire cast was great with actors like Paoli Dam, Vishakha Singh, etc. and the boy who played my son was an absolute delight to work with.

When they grow up, these teens are the ones who will be getting drunk or stoned at parties, brawling with ‘lesser’ mortals, and hitting on women, many of who look upon them as a possible conduit into the film industry. They are hell raisers and proud of it—why would they get into trouble if the family is there to pull strings for them. Which star or star kid (except for Sanjay Dutt, who was a champion brat in his youth) has even been convicted of anything, when they have been caught for a variety of offences? With so many people willing to flatter and appease, it would take a very well brought up star kid to remain normal and grounded. The responsibility to keep their kids in check lies with the parents, and they have to lead by example. Therein lies the challenge!

An actor can never forget his craft: Mithun Mithun Chakraborty who celebrates his 63rd birthday on June 16 has broken every rule in the Bollywood book. When he came to Mumbai to try his luck in the film industry no one would even give him a second glance. He had neither the looks and charisma of Rajesh Khanna nor the deep baritone of Amitabh. GOVT APPROVES INDIA’S BID TO HOST U-17 FOOTBALL WC

EW DELHI: The government today gave the goahead to India's ambitious bid to host the U-17 Football World Cup in 2017, thus boosting the country's chances of organising the tournament that is already being backed by FIFA Vice President Jerome Valcke. "The Union Cabinet gave its approval to the proposal for submitting guarantees sought by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) from the Government of India for their bid to host the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Under 17 World Cup Football Tournament in 2017 in India," a statement issued by the Sports Ministry said. Till now uncertainty loomed

large over India's bid as FIFA, world football's governing body, needed guarantees on tax exemption, security, transport and accommodation of players, visa and foreign exchange. India's first bid was rejected early this year, in January, due to insufficient assurances from the government. But with the government giving the green signal in providing guarantees that would meet FIFA's basic requirements, it has paved the way for a strong bid. While the expenses of hosting the event will be borne by FIFA and AIFF, the government has assured additional financial assistance. ONDON: Three England toporder batsmen hit half centuries before a late flourish by Ravi Bopara as the home side post a challenging 293 for seven in their second Group A Champions Trophy match against Sri Lanka here today. Sent into bat, captain Alastair Cook (59) and Jonathan Trott (76) laid a solid foundation by sharing 83 runs for the second wicket from 17 overs after Ian Bell (20) was out early to set the tone for Joe Root (68) to accelerate the innings under overcast conditions at the Oval. The initial advantage seemed to have frittered away somewhat for England before Ravi Bopara played a cameo of 13-ball 33 not out to take the score near 300 mark. He struck 28 runs with the help of three sixes and two fours from the last over bowled by pacer Shaminda Eranga. England scored 92 runs from the last 10 overs. Cook and Trott played calculative innings by scoring runs in ones and twos. They cut off the risk and employed a safety-first approach as their partnership had

just three boundaries. Cook consumed 85-balls and hit just three fours while Trott found the boundary ropes five times in his 87-ball innings. The cautious approach was apparent from the very beginning with prolong periods without boundaries. However, England somehow got the runs and kept the scoreboard ticking. Their ability to negotiate fast bowler Lasith Malinga (2/58), whose first spell of four overs yielded just 10 runs, without any damage saw them in a sound position by the halfway mark when the home side were 124 for one. Cook was also dropped twice in his ‘strokeless’ innings — on 23 and 56 — both by Tillakaratne Dilshan. The England captain finally fell in the 29th over of the bowling of left-arm spinner Rangana Herath as he was trapped LBW while attempting a sweep shot playing across the line. Cook called for review which went against him. Brief Scores: England: 293 for 7 in 50 overs (Jonathan Trott 76, Joe Root 68; Lasith Malinga 2/58, Shaminda Eranga 2/80). PULLING HIS WEIGHT: Joe Root slams a boundary in the course of his fine knock.
