The residents of Kamatghar area in Bhiwandi Ankita and Avantika has been a toppers in their classes since Class I in their Sant Narain

Hindi High School in Dhamankar Naka area of Bhiwandi. The school and locals are proud of the achievements of the girls. Avantika said, “Yes. I wanted to become a doctor since my childhood but my parents are not in a position to bear the costs of my higher education so they have suggested me to go for commerce and become CA in future. If I get any help or scholarship we will definitely try our best to become doctor and serve the people.” Ankita said, “We both the sisters has been studying around five to six hours daily and Science and Mathematics has been our favourite subjects in which I and Ankita scored 98 and 97 marks in science subject out of 100 and 141 and 139 marks out of 150 in Mathematics respectively.” Anil Singh (42), father of Ankita and Avantika, works as

Since their childhood, they have been dreaming of becoming doctors but my financial condition doesn’t allow me to fulfill their dream.”

Will display of organ donor status on college ID cards and driver’s license promote organ donation?

The identity card is a very crucial thing for students. Displaying status of organ donated on the college ID cards will create awareness about organ donation.

Ravindra Waikar Legislator

If this ID card status is considered as a student’s wish to donate, it will jeopardise his or her life. The state government should guarantee their safety and security.

Bhushan Joshi Insurance executive

We hardly have a working organ bank. This ideal move will add only one column in the students’ ID cards.

Sujith Balakrishnan Student

This decision seems logical. Mentioning blood group on the ID card is ok but displaying student’s dying declaration is not fair. It will put his life in danger.

Ashmik Patil Student

I think it is very good decision by the state government. It will increase organ donation and give new lease of life for those in need of donors.

epitomize these concepts, they capture what he calls a novel form of imaginative modernism. In his early 20′s, staying at Amravati, he would stop at the farms and sketch the horses as they cropped the luxuriantly blooming slopes of hilly pastures. Horses possess a strong resonance, existing amid the maelstrom of life with an unprepossessing serenity that makes them seem particularly fearless. Additionally, shades and colours are also essential to Nayanjeet in his work of art. In all his paintings, there are shades of yellow, the hue of the sun in the Indian subcontinent, relating to moods and attracting energy through the environment. Besides being a professional artist, Nayanjeet teaches mentally challenged young women at Om Creations. He teaches them with care and patience and takes great pleasure in working with them as well as following his own artistic passion. Few artists, notoriously self-centred creatures at the best of times, can boast of this kind of balanced temperament that gives reign both to compassion and selfexpression as satisfyingly as this young man.

Lover of the arts Uma Prakash, artist Anjolie Ela Menon and contemporary dancer Astad Deboo stand before the huge mural painted by Menon at Terminal 3 in the departure section of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi earlier this month.

Something to look at!

AS usual, Delhi steals a march on Mumbai in the matter of facilities at its international airport. On June 4, Chief Minister Sheila Dixit was there. Artist Anjolie Ela Menon was there. Our own Astad Deboo was there. The occasion was the twice-scheduled, twice – postponed unveiling of the massive mural by Menon, on the same day that Delhi also announced it was conferring upon her a Lifetime Achievement Award. As Astad put it, “It was a small, quiet, exclusive affair, maybe 14 of us. The function was held sharp at noon and Mrs. Dixit was dead on time. She drew the curtain and there it was, The Walled City. That’s what it is called.”

So the next time you go to Delhi, you will see the mural on your way out, in the departure area of Terminal 3 (T3 to Delhi-ites). It’s something to look at as you wait to get through Security. It is an impressive sight alright 21 feet by 8.2 feet mural of a city street of old Delhi, presenting a slice of life of the old city’s Mughal history. We hear that the Mumbai mural will be up as soon as work on our international airport is complete. Wonder whether it will show “old Bombay” or Navi Mumbai!

Horses for courses?

WE know, we know. Say ‘horse’ and ‘artist’ and the automatic association is the late M.F. Husain. But there is another artist whose horses are worth looking at and he is exhibiting at Gallery Art and Soul in Shiv Sagar’s Madhuli building till July 1. The artist is Nayanjeet and his impressive ride originated when he was educating himself at the Sir J. J. School of Fine Arts. For him, the horse has been an admired topic of focus in ancestral Asian Art. Usually, from time immemorial, horses are associated with vigour, supremacy and momentum, standing for the advancement and accomplishments of the populace. But Nayanjeet’s horses do no just

There is no government support for us in this issue,” said Bishop Agnelo Rufino Gracias, Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay. Bishop Gracias was speaking with Christians on issues faced by the community, at a joint meeting last weekend, held by Munaf Hakim, Chairman of the Maharashtra State Minorities Commission. This was the first time a special meeting was called for Christians, to discuss the various concerns they face. The meeting was attended by

Mrs. T.F. Thekkekara, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Minorities Development Department, Maharashtra, Fr. Frazer Mascarenhas, Principal, St. Xavier’s College, Dr. Augustine Pinto, former Sheriff of Mumbai, Fr. George Athaide, Secretary of the Archdiocesan Board of Education and several other activists. Most of the speakers at the conference had a common allegation, that the state government’s Education Department was targeting Christian schools. “The contribution of the Catholic community to the nation is beyond numbers. We have 6 degree colleges, 19 junior colleges, 129 High Schools, 15 Higher and Technical Education institutions and other educational institutions in the city alone, excluding the institutions Vishwanath Salian | ADC

run by other Christian denominations. However, the government seems to have neglected us. The government has appointed various commissions for other communities to understand their socio-economic condition. However, no one from the government is bothered with the socio-economic condition of Christians in the state. Christians should be given opportunities in government boards and legal commissions. There is a lack of will from the government’s side to even grant a burial place to the dead,” said Bishop Gracias. Fr. Frazer Mascarenhas, Principal of St. Xavier’s College said, “I am shocked at the way the state education department is targeting our Christian schools. ast year on June 6, Mumbai was transfixed at the level of road rage exhibited on the Kalina CST Road, when one man took a baseball bat to another, leaving him in a coma for almost two months. It will be recalled that senior executive Indrajeet Sawant (35) was arrested by the Vakola police in an attempt to murder case when he reacted with frightening violence to his car, a Chevrolet Optra, being brushed by a Maruti SX4 being driven by one Rishi Gandhi who was accompanied by another man. Enraged by the incident, Sawant allegedly attacked Gandhi’s car with a baseball bat, shattering the windscreen and injuring him. he Indian Coast Guard coordinated with multiples agencies and ships to successfully rescue the 26 crewmen onboard the Merchant Vessel Mol Comfort, a 316 meter long container vessel that split into two on Monday off of the Mumbai coast. The vessel pushed off from Singapore and was headed to Jeddah. The crew included 12 Russian and 14 Filipino citizens and the ship was carrying 4,500 containers. The hull of the vessel broke in two parts and the vessel began to sink. The crew abandoned the ship and jumped off into the sea with available life rafts and one life boat. The MV Yantian Express, which was closest to the site of the ill-fated ship, rescued the crew through rough seas and strong winds. The vessel sank with containers scattered, spilling oil in the area in the process. The crew of the ship is being brought to Colombo.

Speaker addresses the panel, which included (L-R) Dolphy D’souza, Munaf Hakim, Bishop Agnelo Rufino Gracias and Dr. Augustine Pinto. (EOW) after 8 months of investigation, said that no charge could be made out in the case. Such issues are seen with almost all schools of our community. I hope that the Minorities Commission will highlight these issues with the state government.” Gordon D’souza of the Bombay Catholic Sabha urged the commission to concentrate on the develop-

ment of the local Christians in the Uttan – Gorai region. A representative of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Community said that the Anti-Conversion Bill which is under consideration should be passed after proper discussions so that it is not misused against Christians.” philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

However, the city recorded average 17 mm rainfall yesterday and the overall transport and communication in the city remained unaffected. The IMD has forecasted that city will experience heavy shower of rains on Tuesday. However, there is no caution notice like on Monday. Gandhi, when Sawant hit him on the head with the same bat. Jaiswal fell to the ground unconscious. By now the crowd, which had been watching till then, attacked Sawant’s car and then Sawant himself. Meanwhile, someone had contacted the police who came to the spot. Jaiswal was taken to Nanavati Hospital where he was admitted with serious head injuries and Sawant was put into the lock-up. A little over a year later, it is learned that the case has gone through three hearings in the lower courts and is currently in the Sessions Court, where also three hearings have been held. According to Sawant’s lawyer Ejaz Naqvi, initially his client’s bail application was rejected twice by the court. Finally it was granted by the Session’s Court on its second hearing. The lawyer said that so far, not a

single witness, of which the Vakola police have listed six, has appeared during the hearings, nor have the police themselves attended, including the investigating officer. The investigation officer in the case, Vitthal Salgaonkar, said that the charge sheet was filed in the court after framing charges against Sawant. He said there was no need for the police to go to court for each hearing, that they would be informed by the court clerk when the final hearing was to be held. Meanwhile, Karan Khanna, nephew of the victim Sanjeev Jaswal said that his uncle was back in Miami and was expected to visit Mumbai in August. His treatment for the injuries he received here continues abroad, his nephew stated. The next date for hearing in the Sessions Court is August 18.

Process essentially creates a ‘Natural Bypass without undergoing Bypass Surgery’

By A Staff Reporter

“C

ardiac Shock Wave Therapy (CSWT) will be a new and unique way of treating heart disease. It is non invasive and has no side effects and will complement the interventional modalities of treatments offered “, said Dr.Sunil Agarwal, Director Oyster & Pearl Hospital of Pune. He was speaking at the inauguration of the hospital’s Cardiac Cath lab. The Cath lab machine, according to him is a state of the art digital Philips Integris system with applications in cardiac and peripheral interventional therapy and is a new modality of treatment in coronary vascular disease. Incidentally leading Cardiac consultants and surgeons including, Dr. Mukesh Hariawala, a world-renowned Indian American cardiac surgeon & health economist, based in Boston, USA, was present on the occasion. According to him ‘“This unique nonsurgical & zero intervention procedure uses the scientific principles of Angiogenesis. The therapy is administered without the need for any anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Soon after few one hour sessions over weeks, patients feel a sustained decline in cardiac symptoms, with improvement in their quality of life and reduced need for medications. This process essentially creates a “Natural Bypass without undergoing Bypass Surgery”. “It is hardly surprising that there is a very high interest in the Storz Modulith SLC sys-

urrently, most patients with cardiac failure secondary to coronary artery disease are treated by oral medications, angioplasty, stent placement and bypass surgery. However, nationally there is a very large pool of patients who have small sized diffuse coronary arteries often seen in diabetics, which are not treatable by traditional methods. The dominant symptom in these patients is “Angina Pectoris” which is refractory chest pain. These symptoms gradually start getting amplified with disease progression observed by narrowing and stiffening of the blood vessels eventually leading to severe breathlessness. Unfortunately, these patients have a poor tolerance to exercise and can barely climb stairs thus leading a severely restricted and poor quality of life. Scientific innovations are the only hope for these patients and arrival of new cutting edge technologies is usually late in India. Fortunately, the highly reputed Switzerland based “Storz Medical”, who are the pioneers of developing Shockwave Technology for medical use have begun the process of launching this therapy in India.

Colleges that were recruiting new professors have already filled the posts, and because of the delay, we candidates have to suffer. This year, SET was adapted to the ex-

amination pattern of Multiple Choice Questions (MUQ) like in the National Eligibility Test (NET). This change required new correction techniques due to which delays have occurred. The ADC spoke to Dr Harishchandan, Coordinator, NET/SET, Mumbai, who said “The SET results are to be cleared by the UGC department for which a committee from the UGC is sent to declare the results. This committee has not yet come. As per the SET department, the results will now be declared by the end of June.”

Continued from pg 1 « that construction was happening at snail’s pace, I decided that patients should be shifted between June 15 and July 1. But the rains in the last two days made us do the shifting in a hurry instead of at a steady pace in phases,” said Dr. Shah. According to Dr. Shah, electricity can’t be restored till the time the area gets relatively dry and becomes safe for work to start and this might take a minimum of two weeks. Till then, the hospital, minus its patients, will bear an empty look. “I have never seen such an impact of monsoon on the hospital in the last twenty years. As a doctor, it is difficult for me to shut the hospital but I can’t risk the lives of people. Out of 103 indoor patients, the ones who were stable have been sent home and others

needing medical help have been shifted to the Worli hospital and other tie-up hospitals. The Out Patient Department (OPD) has been shifted to the Dean’s office. OPD will continue as before but till the time the construction body does the required patch up work and the BEST gives us a nod, I will not risk admitting new patients,” said Dr. Shah. End of AdvaniAtal era J

D (U) chief Nitish Kumar has perhaps correctly assessed the situation today in the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has stated that the AdvaniAtal era is over. Younger leaders have taken over. There are still some old leaders who are a big asset to the party. Some of them still want to dominate the party but they are finding it difficult to do so. They have no way but to make way for the future leaders. It looks like Nitish Kumar is unable to accept the scenario. He has seen how the announcement of Narendra Modi as the party’s poll campaign chairman was greeted by the executive council members at the Goa meeting. There was loud celebration in the hall. Evidently nobody thought about L.K. Advani who stayed away from the meeting. For Nitish Kumar, the time had come for making a decision. He saw the end of the Advani-Atal era and realised he could not be in an alliance without the top old guard. President of the BJP Rajnath Singh tried to pacify him. He pointed out that Narendra Modi was elected the chairman of BJP’s poll panel. The NDA could have no say in his elevation. The BJP had not named any one as its Prime Minister: Advani could also be the PM choice. Nitish Kumar apparently was not impressed by all these assurances. It was not just Narendra Modi but he would have opposed any other BJP leader’s choice for the PM. He would have stayed in the NDA only if Advani was chosen as the prime ministerial candidate.

OLITICS in India may not be the same again. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has charged the agenda. It has introduced pure communalism to the soft Hindutva that prevailed so far. By appointing the hardliner, Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister, the panel chief for the 2014 parliament election, the party has dropped every bit of ambiguity over secularism. It is stark Hinduism for all to see. Apparently, the old leadership resisted the decision. Tall L.K. Advani had even submitted his resignation from all the posts he held in the party. Yet the irresponsible younger cadre was in no mood to accommodate the sober point of view. For them, a sharper communal politics was the minimum. Advani had reportedly warned behind the walls that Modi was not a proper person for India. The atmosphere may become more bitter when the BJP propagates the Hindu Rashtriya openly. True, the concept goes against the very grain of the constitution which wanted the country to be a secular democratic republic. But the BJP has found no benefit from it. In the future, the very word, secularism, will come under different interpretations. Parties, however parochial in outlook, will claim to be secular.

Secularism as cornerstone Therefore, Modi’s acceptance speech was understandably vehement against the Congress, the largest political party which has come to be associated with secularism. He wants the party to disappear from the scene so that there is no confusion between the BJP, a Hindu outfit, and the Congress, with secular credentials. This may or may not happen but the BJP has embarked upon the task of wiping the slate clean with no mention of secularism whatsoever. Since independence, even long before it, the freedom struggle was based on the idea of an independent India which would know no difference on the basis of community or caste. The leaders immersed in that struggle agreed to India’s partition but not to the thesis that the religion could be mixed with politics. Secularism is thus the cornerstone of the structure that India has tried to raise after Partition. It has not been an ideal effort. Yet it has kept the coun-

try together, with no recurring example of communal divide. In the process, the nation has also come to recognise the distance between the communal forces and the secular elements. It has resulted into a healthy development: secular political parties have generally kept away from the BJP to stall its installation at the Centre. The induction of Modi may not defeat the process. But it will definitely confuse the Hindus who, leave some apart, are animated with cosmopolitan thoughts. They stopped the BJP winning in the last two parliamentary

London, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher asked me the secret of India staying together for centuries. I told her that we did not believe that the country was divided into black and white. We believed that there was a vast grey area. We went on expanding that area. That was our secularism. The idea kept the nation together. She was reportedly impressed by my explanation and she told this to Soviet President Gorbachev. He sent a delegation to India to study the strength of grey area, secularism.

Saffron all the way

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar elections because when the time for casting votes came, they put their weight behind the liberal forces which has kept the country more or less midway neither left or right. The danger of its going right has increased now. RSS, which has initiated and supported Modi sees in him someone nearer to their ideology of Hindutva and anti-Muslim. Real Modi was, however, exposed when he blessed the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat a decade ago. Not a word of regret even after years only underlines his anti-Muslim thinking. How can India have a person like him as the Prime Minister? The repercussions of such a person at the helm of BJP, not possessing even a semblance of liberalism, can be dangerous. Obsessed with driving a wedge between Hindus and Muslims, he can vitiate the young mind. Liberalism or idealism already receding to the background, bigotism and the extremism will go to allocate what is left of the composite culture. When I was India’s High Commissioner at

Modi will make black further bleak and shut every opening for the grey area to expand. In the last few decades, the BJP has purveyed the impression that it is looking for a space that will give it an image of being right of Right, that of pro-Hindu but not of extremist. Modi will stop such an ideology developing. It will be saffron all the way. The BJP has foolishly come to realise that it would have to sharpen difference with the Muslims to look different. It believes that if there is any time to play the Hindu card, it is now. This is a wrong thinking, leaving no space for even small gestures for conciliation. Advani’s presence evokes hope. The greatest benefit of Modi’s importance will be to the Congress. Not that it is intrinsically secular but it has the reputation of being so. The Muslim electorate, nearly 15 per cent, will move towards the Congress and adversely affect large parties like that of Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party, which has a large Muslim following in UP. The party’s image is also secular. The Congress will gain because the next election is not that of state assembly but of Parliament. The Muslims, know the importance. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the BJP’s allies, may still part company with the party. The real loss is that of the Indian nation. At a time when it looks that the various elements have found their identity within the country, Modi’s image of parochialism comes in the open. The idea of India will be jeopardised. It is a pity that the country will be unsettling when it is settling down to an ideology which may not be purely secular but does not disturb people of different faiths to live a life of their own in their own way.

There is no virtue higher than non-injury

What is non-injury? Never producing pain by thought, word and deed, in any living being, is what is called Ahimsa, non-injury. There is no virtue higher than non-injury. There is no happiness higher than what a man obtains by this attitude of non-offensiveness to all creation.

What non-injury is not This is a great lesson for us all to learn, that in all matters the two extremes are alike; the extreme positive and the extreme negative are always similar; when the vibrations of light are too slow we do not see them, nor do we see them when they are too rapid. So with sound; when very low in pitch we do not hear it, when very high we do not hear it either. Of like nature is the difference between resistance and non-resistance. One man does not resist because he is weak, lazy, and cannot, not because he will not; the other man knows that he can strike an irresistible blow if he likes; yet he not only does not strike, but blesses his enemies. The one who from weakness resists not

commits a sin, and as such cannot receive any benefit from the non-resistance; while the other would commit a sin by offering resistance. The so-called great men of the world may all be seen to become jealous of each other for a small name, for a little fame, and for a few bits of gold. So long as this jealousy exists in a heart, it is far away from the perfection of Ahimsa. The cow does not eat meat, nor does the sheep. Are they great Yogis, great non-

MATTER & SPIRIT injurers (Ahimsakas)? Any fool may abstain from eating this or that; surely that gives him no more distinction than to herbivorous animals. The man who will mercilessly cheat widows and orphans, and do the vilest deeds for money, is worse than any brute, even if he lives entirely on grass alone. Therefore we must always remember that external practices have value only as helps to develop internal purity. It is better to have internal purity alone, when minute

attention to external observances is not practicable.

Test of non-injury The test of Ahimsa is absence of jealousy. Any man may do a good deed or make a good gift on the spur of the moment, or under the pressure of some superstition or priestcraft; but the real lover of mankind is he who is jealous of none. Non-Attachment “Drinking the cup of desire, the world becomes mad.” Day and night never come together, so desire and the Lord never come together. Hold your money merely as custodian for what is God’s. Have no attachment for it. Let name and fame and money go; they are a terrible bondage. Feel the wonderful atmosphere of freedom. You are free, free, free! Oh, blessed am I! Freedom am I! I am the Infinite! In my soul I can find no beginning and no end. All is my self. Say this unceasingly.

Only NaMo can steer the nation to prosperity AS expected Shri Nitish Kumar demonstrated a split with the BJP after 17 long years on the pretext that he could not brook Shri Modi as the face of the BJP in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls. A clear concept of the economic status and sincere efforts to steer clear of the impasse in areas of vital concern, namely, current account deficit, fiscal deficit, high inflation, flight of investments to set the tone for economic growth to reach the people and stem the rot accumulated by unimaginative handling of the economist PM and his council of ministers. The streamlining of imports with exploration of indigenisation to largely cut down the import bill at a time when rupee is depreciating is highly essential. It is loud and clear that Shri Modi is the only leader who is perceived to have the clarity and the skills to overhaul the country to tangible signs of prosperity and hence at this critical juncture he should be given the opportunity and summarily reject the opportunism of self-centred voices of hypocrisy. — T.M. But better sense prevailed and now indications are there that the all important Food Security Bill would be passed in the regular monsoon session of Parliament. WITH Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JD(U)) ending its 17 years old alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by leaving the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) due to appointment of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the chief campaigner of the party for the 2014 general elections is the great victory for Narendra Modi and downfall of the NDA with only three member alliance parties of BJP, Shiv Sena and Akali Dal. I strongly feel that without any hesitation the BJP leadership must declare the Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate of the party for the 2014 to enable him to prove his worth as the staits population has already crossed 20 million people. ocial media has begun to govern the world we live in, and though purchasing products online has become easy, it can throw up quite a few difficult situations. On the night of Sunday, June 17, at around 10pm, Deepak Prabhu (32), a resident of Borivli West, received around 350 calls from customers who were wanting to buy his silver coloured Santro Zing 2008 model, saying that an advertisement about the car was displayed on the Quickr.com site. The ad further described the car as ‘a Single Hand Drive and first owned car with Registration No MH 02…’ However, Prabhu, who owns a

real estate agency in Borivali West, says, “I have not posted the advertisement on Quickr, someone has created a bogus account in my name and posted the ad and the cops are not entertaining my complaint.” The car, the advert claims, has leather seats, A/C, Power Windows, Power Steering, Music System, and CNG with new tyres and the best price to purchase the car is at Rs.85,000. Prabhu was completely astonished to hear about his car being put up for sale and started receiving calls from 10 pm to till 1 am, which again started from 6:17am onwards on Monday morning. He also added that he was not getting any assistance from the

Organ donor tag on students’ ID cards and on driving license

n order to spread awareness about voluntary organ donation amongst college going youth and vehicle owners, the state government yesterday decided to include special mention as organ donors in their college identity cards and on driving licenses. Praising the state government for its initiative Governor K Shankarnarayanan has directed all the vice chancellors in the state to take part in the government initiative. Minister for Public Health, Suresh Shetty will launch the initiative aimed at vehicle owners at Tardeo RTO office on June 20. The Governor in a letter addressed to the vice chancellors of all the universities in the state directed them to incorporate volun-

tary organ donation consent of the students in the college application form while taking college admission. If the students do give their consent then the same shall be mentioned on their college identity cards. The Governor has also decided to take a review of the implementation of the initiative at the next meeting of the university vice chancellors.

Besides this in order to encourage vehicle owners for their consent to voluntary organ donation, the government will incorporate similar provisions in the application form for seeking driving license. Once the vehicle owners give their consent the same will find mention on their driving license. As per the Government Resolution (GR) laying down the norms transplantation of human organs will have to be done with the prior consent of the near relatives of the patient declared by the doctors as brain death. As per medical practices human organs can be removed within six hours from a patient declared brain death. Moreover, the organs so removed have to be transplanted to the recipient within 24 hours of the organs removal.

Mumbai Mirchi owner arrested for fraud Ten major banks duped of nearly `10 crore

T

he Mumbai Police’s desperate hunt for two major fraudsters, who had duped ten financial institutions, finally came to an end last Thursday with their arrest. Police personnel from the Andheri police station arrested Rajesh Sawant, owner of the famous Mumbai Mirchi Restaurant in Andheri East, and Subhashrao Deshmukh, chairman of Sahebrao Deshmukh Co-operative Bank Ltd (SDCBL), for duping ten banks of nearly Rs. 10 crore. According to investigations, the duo duped these financial institutions by taking loans from all of them, placing the same premises as mortgage. Speaking to the ADC, Pradeep Gosavi, Senior Police Inspector at the Andheri police station said, “There are more arrests to be made, since we have discovered the existence of a Direct Sales Agent (DSA), who has played a major role in the

racket orchestrated by the duo.” The Mumbai Mirchi restaurant measuring approximately 2400 sq ft and other premises, are part of Sawant’s ancestral property. He, along with Deshmukh, masterminded the entire racket said investigators, and had even taken a loan of Rs. 1.47 crore from SDCBL with Deshmukh’s help. The racket was unearthed by an official of Karvy Financial Services, situated in Andheri (East), who filed an FIR in the month of February. The complainant alleged that they had loaned Rs 60 lakh in 2011, to a company run by Rajesh Sawant, against a mortgage of his restaurant, Mumbai Mirchi. However, when Sawant was unable to repay the loan, they discovered that the same property had been illegally mortgaged to other banks too. The accused have been arrested under Sections 465, 467, 468, 474, 420 and 120 (B) of IPC. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

or stitches needed for this. 5. To what do you attribute the success of Z-lipo? Are patients fed up with non-surgical methods of inch-loss? Ans: When one looses inches by dieting, the fat cells only temporarily shrink in size. Thats the reason the inches come back again after one stops dieting. The results of non-surgical techniques of inch loss have also turned out to be disappointing. Patients get fed up due to the large number of sittings needed and the money spent. Z-lipo is the most scientific, safe and permanent way of loosing inches. Its done in one single session. Plus the fact that one can resume normal activities in less than 3 days also adds to its popularity. 6. What is the post-treatment care needed after a Z-lipo? Ans: A customised pressure garment is given to the patient. This is to prevent the skin from sagging so that it takes a nice shape. There is no other after care needed.

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2013 you’re home, so that you’re not putting your feet in dirty shoes the next day. Keep your feet clean and if you’re worried about stinky feet because of all the moisture, remember to use an antifungal powder. Air them out whenever you can if you wear closed shoes. Get a pedicure. It’s important to keep your feet clean and avoid infections. Get one at least twice a month. Keep your toenails short. Not only will long nails look horrible, dirt will deposit

under the nails, making them prone to infections. Wear clean, dry shoes. Wearing wet shoes will increase your chances of infection. If you don’t have an antiseptic, dip your feet in warm water with a spoonful of salt. Salt acts as a good disinfectant. If you get easily infected with fungus on your feet, using an antifungal powder every morning and an antifungal cream every night during the monsoons will prevent them from developing. Buy two pair of shoes during the monsoon, so that you can wear them alternately. This should be done so that your shoes get the chance to dry properly. There are chances of a single pair staying soggy till the next day as well, especially if they are closed shoes. Needless to say, especially in this season, change your socks daily.

bites or pinched toes. Take a look at how to avoid that: If you’re buying ballerina shoes made out of PVC, make sure you walk around the shop a lot to see if the back hurts your ankle. The cheaper variety will give you shoe bites unless you get really lucky. So, invest in a good pair to last the season if you want to avoid limping around the city. If you’re buying peep toe shoes, test to see whether your toes are getting pinched in them. If they are even slightly uncomfortable, avoid them completely because they will get worse, not better, with the rain. Guys and girls alike should avoid slippers and flip flops. They may seem like a good idea, but all they really do is splash the water onto your clothes, onto other people’s clothes, onto your legs and‌ they’re basically messy and you should avoid them. Also, there are more chances you’ll slip or lose your grip in them and there are enough abandoned slippers floating around the city to serve as a hint of what happens to them in the midst of a downpour. Invest in sandals instead. When you’re buying sandals, make sure that the straps are made of soft material. Plastic will get hard with time and start cutting into your skin. Gumboots are stylish as well as really convenient, but make sure you don’t buy very wide ones, because water will simply collect from the top, keeping your feet wet for longer. Also, make sure the rubber from these doesn’t hurt your feet.

Keeping your feet in tip-top shape is important this season. Here are a few ways to prevent your feet from getting infected by fungal infections and make sure you keep them clean and healthy: Once you’re home, wash your feet with antiseptic water because infections can spread easily during the monsoon. Dry your feet thoroughly as soon as you step indoors. Make sure to dry the areas Rain shoes are essential, but the wrong type between your toes properly. can mean you’re going through the rains Make sure you wash your rain shoes once with mud splattered across your legs, shoe

>> Drinking beer regularly can be one of the prime causes of bloating

DO YOU NEED MORE CALCIUM?

>> Surprisingly, insomnia is an indication of having a calcium deficiency

If you often complain about pain in your joints and have been experiencing increased muscle cramps, you could have a calcium deficiency. Take this quiz by Priyanka Singh to find out

are you causing your bloat? Before you start complaining about your bloat, take this quiz to see whether you’re to blame for it, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

Do you always add extra salt to your meals? a. Yes b. No. Do you always finish first at the dinner table? a. Yes b. No. Do you lie down immediately after eating? a. Yes b. No. Do you drink water along with

your meals? a. Yes. b. No. Do you love canned and processed foods? a. Yes. b. No. Are you a frequent beer drinker? a. Yes. b. No. Do you avoid exercising? a. Yes. b. No.

Mostly as You have a bad diet and your habits match. Eating quick is not a skill and it’s only going to give you digestive problems. You must chew your food properly and swallow it slowly to avoid bloating. Drinking beer, eating processed food and drinking water along with your meals all contribute to bloating. You need to change your habits and also start doing light exercises to manage your bloating problem. Mostly Bs Your diet and habits are healthy, so it’s unlikely that you feel bloated often. Getting a little bloated occasionally is no cause for concern and it could just be because of an irregular sleeping pattern, a particular food you ate (foods such as broccoli, sprouts and beans cause bloating) or a shift in your meal timings. If you feel bloated all the time, you should contact your doctor to find out what may be causing it because your routinely habits aren’t to blame.

1

Brake slow If you’re driving in the rains, never brake suddenly. Instead, control the speed with the accelerator, pump the brake pedal and apply the brake slow. Sudden braking may result in skidding or overturning of your vehicle.

7

don’t drive While driving cautiously in light to moderate rain is fine, avoid going outdoors when there are heavy showers. If you are already outdoors, park in a sheltered area until the storm subsides. It’s also difficult to gauge how deep a puddle of water is and it’s not unusual for a car to stall in a dip that appeared shallow but wasn’t.

avoid lightening Lightening is attracted to water and metal. So, don’t swim and don’t even stand in a puddle. Also, don’t touch metal. That means you need to stay away from fences, clotheslines and such. Also, drop your bag as most have metal parts.

2

C

alcium is not only essential to strengthen your teeth and bones, but it also prevents blood clots, the build up of too much acid in your blood and helps keep your heart and cardiovascular system healthy. If you have a calcium deficiency, you will experience the symptoms and taking this quiz will help you detect them. Do you experience leg cramps, especially at night? a) Yes. b) No.

3

4 loose lines If a power line comes in contact with your car, it’s best to stay inside the vehicle until help arrives. Do not try to get out of the car because it’s the safest place for you to be. Use your cell phone to call the fire department.

Despite taking necessary measures, do you still experience dry skin on a regular basis? a) Yes. b) No. Do you have brittle nails? a) Yes. b) No.

pet peeves If you’re a pet owner you must bring your pets indoors during a storm. Animals are your responsibility and leaving them outside and unprotected during a storm is simply cruel. Also, do not shoo away any stray animals that use your surroundings for temporary shelter. Have a heart!

5

(For women) Have you started experiencing aggravated PMS symptoms such as increased stomach cramps or a change in your menstrual flow? a) Yes. b) No. Have you suffered from more than two fractures in the past year? a) Yes. b) No. Do you have a slow pulse rate? a) Yes. b) No. Do your joints pain often? a) Yes. b) No. Do you suffer from insomnia? a) Yes. b) No.

6 don’t Use the landline Don’t use corded phones or landlines during thunderstorms. Lightening travelling through telephone wires has killed people due to the electrical surge. Mobile phones and cordless phones are a safer bet.

UnplUg electronics When a storm is on its way, especially one that has a high amount of electrical activity or wind, it’s important to unplug (not just switch off) electrical appliances. Always unplug the cable lines from your network cards and cable boxes, since many cable lines run up telephone poles and a strike to a pole can fry your equipment.

« 10 Ways to stay

safe

during the monsoon

Glynda Alves thinks that you can and should enjoy the beautiful rain and cloudy skies that the monsoon brings. But, it always helps to be cautious because Mother Nature is a force to be reckoned with

8

danger ahead If you are in an open place when a thunderstorm has hit, you need to be on high alert. Assume the lightening crouch: Squat down with your head between your knees and your hands covering your ears. This position makes the lightening strike to flow over your body, so you may be able to sustain a smaller injury from it.

9

Find shelter If you are stuck in a lightening storm outdoors, avoid large open spaces where you are taller than anything else around you, such as a football field. Also, stay away from isolated objects such as trees and light posts.

10

stay inside Lightening, sudden flooding, high winds and poor visibility means that a severe rainstorm is by no means going to let you enjoy the rains safely. When the weather is bad (as predicted to be on June 23-28), it’s best to stay safe and sound indoors.

Mostly as From your series of affirmative answers, it seems like you are suffering from a high calcium deficiency. We’re saying high because a calcium deficiency starts showing its symptoms only after it has elevated to a substantial amount. Frequent muscle cramps and pain in the joints are the most common symptoms of lacking the nutrient. Read the column ‘Calcium Check’ below to find out how you can manage the deficiency. Mostly Bs You don’t have to worry about being deficient in calcium because there are no symptoms that indicate a dearth of this nutrient. But, as mentioned before, the symptoms of calcium shortage do not show unless they reach to a high level. So, maintain a diet that consists of natural vitamin C sources. But, don’t overdo it as extremely high levels of calcium can also be harmful to your health.

Calcium check If you are taking vitamin C supplements, then consume them exactly how you’ve been instructed to by your physician, as too much calcium can interfere with the functions of the nervous and muscular systems. An excess amount in your blood causes calcium rigour, which is characterised by muscles that contract and cannot relax. If you are suffering from a calcium deficiency you need to know that certain substances interfere with the absorption of calcium. They might also be largely responsible for your deficiency. We give you a list: l When excess amounts of fat, protein or sugar combine with calcium, an insoluble compound is formed which cannot be absorbed, leading to the calcium going to waste. l Insufficient vitamin D intake or excess phosphorus and magnesium, hinders the absorption of calcium. l Oxalic acid found in chocolate, spinach, soy beans, almonds, cashews, kale and rhubarb, when combined with calcium in excess, make another insoluble compound which may form stones in the kidney or gall bladder. However, a balanced diet should not cause this to happen. l Other interfering factors include lack of exercise, physical and emotional stress and depression. Even moderate exercise encourages the absorption of calcium. l The parathyroid glands in your neck help adjust the body’s storage of calcium. If these glands are not functioning properly, accumulation may occur. If your diet and lifestyle is not the reason for your calcium deficiency, then this might be another possibility for this nutrient’s shortage in your body. Discuss this with your doctor. l Calcium needs some acid for proper assimilation. If acid in some form is not present in the body, the mineral will not be dissolved and therefore, it cannot be used by your body. Instead, it may build up in tissues or joints as deposits, leading to a variety of health problems. l There are some medicinal drugs that can also hinder the absorption due to the properties used in them. Some of the commonly found properties include caffeine, diuretics, fatty acids, fibre oxalates and fluoride.

There’s no need to be a pest controller donned with an antibacterial spray can every time your kitchen gets dirty. Simply clean the area with regular soap and water. If in your quest for youth you’re flummoxed by the surplus of products available, this article is for you, says Rhea Dhanbhoora

E

very time a new anti-ageing product is launched, women and men run to it, hoping that it’s “the one.” The one that will be their fountain of youth. While an anti-ageing cream won’t necessarily make you look younger, most of them help your skin retain moisture and can actually reduce the appearance of wrinkles and tighten up saggy skin. Most of the benefits come from various properties and ingredients present in these creams. But, from retinol and antioxidants to vitamins and ceramides, the ingredients can seem like Latin to the casual shopper. And, it’s not necessarily true that the more expensive a cream is, the more effective it will be. In fact, you’ll often find that cheaper products have the same ingredients as their expensive counterparts. So, what do you need to look for in an anti-ageing cream? We bring you a list.

Vitamins

Both vitamin E and C work well in anti-ageing products. While vitamin C increases collagen production, vitamin E helps protect cell membranes from damage and also prevents the collagen that is already present from being destroyed.

dear Barbara, Since the rains began, I’ve been trying to avoid wearing closed footwear. But, invariably I end up wearing formal shoes most of the time. This has resulted in my feet emitting a foul odour. That’s not it — I’ve also been experiencing itchiness in my feet for the past 2-3 days. I don’t know what to do to combat this. Please help. — Riyaz Khan, santacruz dear Riyaz, You’re right, wearing closed shoes during the monsoon will lead to foot odour. However, what you’ve described doesn’t seem to be simply a case of smelly feet. The itchiness that you’ve been experiencing suggests that you could be suffering from foot fungus. Observe the skin between your toes and see if you can find any red patches. If

you do, it’s a sign that fungus has been developing and you’ll need to visit a doctor. Also, regardless of whether you have a rash or not, make sure you follow a good foot hygiene regime. Wash your feet in lukewarm water when you get back from work and wear thick socks made of cotton as they help keep sweat at bay. You should also make sure that you alternate between two pairs of shoes so you can let them air out for a day before wearing them again. dear Barbara, I’ve read a lot about the benefits of using bath salts and I really want to try them out. However, I am quite confused about how I am supposed to use them while bathing. I don’t want to make the effort if its a long

process. Could you help me out with a set of instructions on how to use bath salts? — Kiran talpade, dadar dear Kiran, If you’re worried about not having enough time to use bath salts, don’t worry at all because the process is simple and won’t take more than a few minutes every day. Put the required amount of salt in a square piece of cloth, fold up the sides and tie them together with a string. Then drop this bag of salt in your bathtub and stir the water with your hand so that salts get dissolved. Once that’s done, have your bath as usual. If you don’t have a bathtub, use them as a foot soak. Send your questions to: healthandfitness@afternoondc.in

BROKERAGE RECOMMENDATIONS Finquest Research calls a ‘Buy’ on Tata Motors CMP: Rs. 300 Target Rs. 397

Valuation & Rating: We continue to value JLR at 8x FY15E P/E while we value the parent at an P/E 10x FY15E earnings. We reiterate our Buy rating on TML, while we revise our earlier target price upwards from Rs 362 to Rs 397 on the back of robust performance from JLR. We have modeled for FY14E/FY15E earnings of Rs 31.8 and Rs 36.3 respectively. TML would be impacted by higher capex by JLR GBP 2.75bn and the standalone entity (Rs 30bn) which would impact the free cash flow negatively while also resulting in higher depreciation in FY14 and FY15. Even though the parent might report losses in the next couple of quarters we are bullish on the performance of JLR driven by the strength of JLR’s portfolio, higher contribution from China and high ASPs of the upcoming models.

First Call Research calls a ‘Buy’ on Merck CMP: Rs. 652 Target Rs. 725

Outlook and Conclusion: At the current market price of Rs.659.00, the stock P/E ratio is at 12.39 x CY13E and 11.51 x CY14E respectively. Earning per share (EPS) of the company for the earnings for CY13E and CY14E is seen at Rs. 53.18 and Rs. 57.28 respectively. Net Sales and PAT of the company are expected to grow at a CAGR of 13% and 14% over 2011 to 2014E respectively. On the basis of EV/EBITDA, the stock trades at 5.99 x for CY13E and 4.99 x for CY14E. Price to Book Value of the stock is expected to be at 1.91 x and 1.64 x respectively for CY13E and CY14E. We expect that the company surplus scenario is likely to continue for the next three years, will keep its growth story in the coming quarters also. RBI Sticks To Remaining Prudent Monitory Policy maintains status quo, Industry dissatisfied, but..

s expected the Reserve Bank of India kept interest rates unchanged in the policy review disappointing all the auto, home and other loan consumes yesterday. RBI in each of its previous three policy reviews had cut the interest rates. The RBI left its policy repo rate (the rate at which RBI lends to banks) unchanged at 7.25% and kept the cash reserve ratio (CRR), or the share of deposits banks must keep with the RBI, steady at 4%, despite falling inflation in recent months The RBI also warned of upward risks to inflation posed by a falling rupee and increases in food prices. The RBI also called for vigilance over global economic uncertainty, citing the risks of a reversal of capital flows from emerging markets. Experts believe such outflows, fuelled by investor worries that the U.S. Federal Reserve will soon wind down its quantitative easing, have hit the Despite the 75 bps cut in repo rate so far this year, the investment sentiment hasn’t really become buoyant and apprehensions remain. The lending rates have not come down and a pick up in non food credit is still elusive. As the monetary transmission mechanism has been weak, RBI will need to focus on the outcome of lower lending rates by banks. — Naina Lal Kidwai, President, FICCI

Indian currency especially hard and complicated policymaking for RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao. “It is only a durable receding of inflation that will open up the space for monetary policy to continue to address risks to growth,” the RBI said in a statement. Incidentally, Industry was not surprised. According to Abheek Barua, Chief economist, HDFC Bank, the absence of cuts either in the repo rate or CRR in review hardly came as a surprise. “Prudence pays especially for central banks attempting to manage an economy buffeted by adverse external pressures and extreme uncertainty in the global policy environment. Thus the recent depreciation of the INR and the absence of any uncertainty about its future course warranted holding action by the RBI,” he said. ASSOCHAM President Rajkumar N Dhoot feels that RBI has ignored other factors like arrival of good Monsoon that will boost food supply

Now that inflation numbers and even the fiscal position of the Government seem to be improving, the RBI needs to be more flexible on the interest rate to give the economy the monetary incentive it badly needs. We are aware that the RBI is walking a tightrope but our interest rate structure continues to remain in dire need of being globally competitive. — Niranjan Hiranandani, President, IMC

and will have a dampening impact on the price situation. “If we read the RBI policy document, we get a clear signal that it is being done under large economies. We cannot be going just by a sole consideration of rupee depreciation and its possible impact on inflation,” said Dhoot. He further added that instead of taking steps which are full of conviction, it is a pity that we have now look more towards the moves of the Federal Reserve with regard to so -called quantitative easing and its impact on the currency pricing. “Should our economy, the banking system and the entire financial services be solely dependent on action of a few large economies?’ he asked. However, Barua still believes that the possibility of rate cuts of between 50-75 bps over the year remains. “We also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a couple of cuts in the CRR down the road as liquidity tightens as we enter the second half of the fiscal year,” he said.

The recent rise in minimum support prices and release of suppressed inflation without overlooking the emerging risks from reversal of capital flows and the external sector vulnerability would be watched closely by the RBI in calibrating its monetary policy stance, going forward. — Kishore Bang, Vice Chairman & MD, Nirmal Bang

The move was largely anticipated by market participants after recent weakening of rupee; however the change in tone comes as positive surprise. Form the debt market perspective participants will give thumbs up to the clarity provided and yields should get stabilized and move lower in line with fall in inflation pace. — Kunal Shah, Fund Manager , Kotak Mahindra Old Mutual Life Insurance

ndia's May trade deficit widened to $20.1 billion from $17.8 billion a month ago, a trade ministry official said, on high imports of cheaper gold, increasing pressure on the current account balance. India has been struggling to control the current account deficit that hit an all-time high of 6.7 percent of GDP in the December quarter. The deficit has exacerbated the fall of the Indian rupee against the dollar

in the recent sell-off in emerging currencies. Gold and silver imports rose nearly 90 percent year-on-year to $8.4 billion last month, slower than an annual 138 percent surge in April, as retail consumers in the world's biggest gold importer tried to take advantage of a sharp fall in global prices. Overall, merchandise imports rose about 7 percent to $44.65 billion, the trade ministry said. Exports fell 1.1 percent from a year earlier to $24.51 billion, the first annual fall in five months.

Apple followed with 46.46 per cent and 39.56 per cent respondents saying they owned electronics products of these brands. While nearly seven out of 10 high school students said they own mobile phones, about 20 per cent said they use mobile phones to access internet (compared to just 12%in 2009).Mobile phones also emerged as fastest growing mediums for accessing internet among post-millennials (18.17 percent).About 62 per cent said they bought movie tickets online, while 47 per cent purchased books, DVDs and music. Facebook is the most popular social networking site with 83.38 per cent saying they are registered it, while 91.54 per cent said this was also their most preferred portal. “The survey shows the increasing comfort levels that the Post-Millennial generation exhibit with digital technology, social networking, smart phones and gaming, which helps us create conditions to unleash their creativity and innovativeness,” TCS Executive Vice President and Global Head HR Ajoy Mukherjee said. This can help us not just attract the best of talent but also aid in keeping them engaged and energised, he added.

HAKTI Kala Kshetra and Kala Kriti Kendra presented the Kathak performance by accomplished Kathak exponent Jayantimala and her disciples at the ISKCON auditorium, Juhu, last Sunday. The performance was noteworthy for its dramatic and technical quality. Jayantimala is the disicple and daughter of the renowned Kathak queen Sitara Devi and has established the Kala Kriti Kendra with the intention of propagation and promotion of classical arts, particularly the Kathak style of dance. Over the years, Jayantimala along with Sitaraji has performed for varied festivals both in India and abroad. Hailing from a family of traditional dancers and musicians, Jayanti developed an inclination to dance from a tender age. The programme commenced with Bal Krishna Leela wherein aspects of childhood pranks of little one was enacted. The role of Krishna was enacted by Rishika Mishra with elegance. The episodes depicted were killing of the serpent Kaliya, Makhan Chor and lifting of the mountain Govardhana for the protection of the people. Besides Risihika, the dancers also included actress Hrishita

role of Lord Shiva was enacted by Bhojpuri actor Rajesh Mishra. Besides the expressional ‘Kaise Nazariya Ladi Shyam Se’ another number establishing the inter-relationship between Radha and Krishna was enacted in Vrindavani Kathak with subtlety. On the whole, a delightful and dramatic performance.

Concert celebrates Tagore’s birth anniversary HE current year is the 151st year of Ravindranath Tagore's birth. All over the world, different programmes are being held to celebrate the memory of Tagore. Robi Anurag is a theme based concert conceived by Tagore scholar Kamal Sen and classical singer Neela Bhagwat of the Gwalior gharana. Tagore was a multidimensional genius. An exhibition of his paintings and sketches is on at the NGMA. In Robi Anurag, Soma Sen who is a well known city based practitioner of Rabindra Sangeet sang Tagore's songs in their original form. Classical singer Neela Bhagwat responded to each of Sen's songs through the medium of a bandish. “This is my humble response to the great poet and thinker. There are a lot of funny sub-tracks and situations which raise many laughs with a hilarious performance from the ensemble cast, especially Bhalchandra Kadam, Vaibhav Mangle, Vikas Samudre, Kishori Ambiye, Uday Sabnis, Sanjeevani Jadhav, Santosh Pawar, etc. The story has been filmed well by Sameer Athalye and the music by Pravin Kuvar is good.

'Ahir Bhairav' was the best way to respond to this song. 'Je Rate Mor Duvargully' has been immortalised by the film maker Ritwik Ghatak who has used it in his classic 'Meghe Dhaka Tara'. Bhagwat thought of singing 'Aseem Dariya Toofan Ghana' in the raga 'Hansadhwani' as an answer to this Ravindra Sangeet number. Her 'Hansadhwani' was extremely effective. 'Aagoner Parasmani' is like a prayer. Bhagwat came up with a bada khyal in the 14 beat taal jhumra in the raga 'Brindabani Sarang'. The tarana in teen taal was utterly delightful. It was a wonderful evening of melodious music by the duo. Anutosh Degharia on the tabla and Niranjan Lele on the harmonium lent instrumental support to the artistes. Priya Srinivasan who read explanatory commentary was simply superb.

Try not to be overly sensitive with loved ones but look on the positive side of all that you have. Perhaps you are taking a lot for granted.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Your expectations will be high and you may have to contend with some delays in a sanction or repayment. It would be better to lie low rather than seek a way out, as it will happen automatically. You need to make an effort and do things differently to bring back romance and excitement in your life.

Paes dreams of featuring in 2016 Games N

EW DELHI: At the age of 40, Leander Paes has won everything that a tennis player dreams of but the Indian tennis legend wants to keep going and play in his seventh Olympics Games. Paes, who celebrated his 40th birthday today, is considered one of the greatest tennis players in the world with 13 Grand Slam titles. He is the only tennis player in the world who has featured in six consecutive Olympics. But the Indian says he still has a lot of fire in his belly to improve his game and play in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. "At this stage my showcase is full, I have earned enough o support my family. I have got to a stage, where I have a career Slam, that is epitome of my career. At this stage why I still want

to play is that I want to keep getting better. Fitness wise I want to push myself to get to seventh Olympics, which is three years down the line," Paes told NDTV. Paes said he will reunite with his Czech partner Radek Stepanek, with whom he won the Australian Open last year to complete his career Slam. An injury to Stepanek followed by surgery forced Paes to look for other partners and no partnership succeeded. Paes, whose has dropped out of top-10, said he was looking forward to play with Stepanek again. They will start with a tournament in England, which will be a warm up for the Wimbledon. Paes said today's birthday was special since his daughter prepared a chocolate cake for him.

Anand to meet Gelfand in fourth round

MOSCOW: Fresh from his victory against Russian Alexander Morozevich, Viswanathan Anand will take on his last world championship challenger Boris Gelfand of Israel in the fourth round of Tal memorial chess tournament. Starting out with a loss against Fabiano Caruana of Italy in the opener, Anand followed it up with a draw in a tense affair against Dmitry Andreikin of Russia, and then desperately needed a win to bounce back in the tournament. The Indian ace overpowered Morozevich from a typically balanced middle game. With six rounds still remaining in one of the strongest tournament ever, Anand shares the fifth spot along with Andreikin and world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway on 1.5 points from three games so far.

Somdev bows out of Wimbledon qualifiers, loses to Reid L ONDON: Somdev Devvarman missed chances galore, including a match point, as he crashed out of the Wimbledon qualifiers after losing a gruelling and energy-sapping first round match against Australia's Matt Reid. Somdev, who is ranked 78 places above the Reid at 135, frittered away a good start to lose 67 (4, 6-4, 16-18 in his opening round of the only Grass Court Grand Slam of the season. Somdev had a good lead in the first set and had a match point in the ninth game of the third set but allowed Reid to comeback every time and went on to lose the match. The two players fought tooth and nail in the 34-game third set and it was Reid who won the battle of nerves as he broke Somdev in the 34th game to move to second round. Somdev's defeat means that there won't be any Indian in the

men's singles draw of the Wimbledon this year. It was first meeting between Somdev, who was seeded 22nd in the qualifiers and unseeded Reid. Somdev had taken a 3-1 lead after an early break but dropped serve

in the fifth game to allow the Australian make it an even affair. The set went with serve from that point and it took a tie-breaker to finish the first set. Reid took control of the tie-breaker by racing to a 5-1 lead and comfortably pock-

eted a one-set lead. The second set was fought fiercely and Somdev faced exit when he was down 0-40 in the sixth game but saved all the three breakpoints. Eventually, Somdev succeeded in getting that elusive break in the ninth game and served out the set in the next. Going with the momentum, Somdev broke Ried in the first game of the third set. He saved a break chance in the next game and soon he was up 3-1. Somdev had a match point in the ninth game but not squandered that but also dropped his serve in the next game to allow Reid make it 5-5. The Australian held is own in the next and Somdev was now serving to stay in the match. What followed next was an incredible battle of fitness and nerves as they went on to hold serve till 34th game. Somdev had break chances in 29th and 31st games but Reid came back to continue the battle.

ECIFE: Spain’s bid to add the FIFA Confederations Cup to their FIFAWorld Cup and UEFA European Championship titles got off to a good start with victory against Uruguay. Having suffered a semi-final loss to the United States four years ago in South Africa, Spain were keen to prove themselves in Brazil this time and already are well positioned in Group B. Within 32 minutes, Pedro Rodríguez and Roberto Soldado had put Vicente del Bosque’s men in control against the South American champions – and they held on for the points despite a late Luis Suárez goal which was a classic free-kick. Amid a dominant opening by Spain, it was no surprise when Pedro connected with a partially cleared Xavi Hernández corner, his shot deflecting in off Uruguay captain Diego Lugano on 20 minutes. Shortly afterwards a clever Cesc Fàbregas through

striker Suárez beat Iker Casillas, who was otherwise untroubled. Spain’s Thursday opponents in Rio de Janeiro, Tahiti, begin against Nigeria on Monday.

Cafu says Balotelli could be best in world if he controls temper B

RASILIA: Brazil legend Cafu believes that Italy’s Mario Balotelli could become one of the best players in the world if he learns to control his temper. The 22-year-old Milan star netted the winner in his side’s 2-1 Confederations Cup win over Mexico on Sunday, taking Italy level on points with Brazil in Group A. However, Balotelli made the headlines for all the wrong reasons earlier this month when he was booked twice and sent off within four minutes of the Azzurri’s World Cup 2014 qualifier against Czech Republic. And two-time World Cup winner Cafu has urged the young forward to make the most of his talent, while warning him to curb his temper on the field, as reported on Goal.com. “Balotelli could become one of the greats of the game. He has a particular character, though. He must learn to control himself in order to give his best on the pitch,” the Brazilian told La Gazzetta dello

Sport. The 43-year-old then went on to praise Neymar as he feels his compatriot, too, has the potential to become one of the best players in the world. “Neymar is an incredibly strong player. He can become a real star as well,” he added. The Seleção will face Italy in the final round of group fixtures at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on Saturday.

Italy’s Pirlo celebrates 100th cap with goal and win Brand Dhawan on the upswing Italy started the game well and created opportunities for both Balotelli and Emanuele Giaccherini, while Mexico went close after 11 minutes when Andrés Guardado hit the crossbar. The Azzurri continued to shine, however, and they eventually went ahead when Pirlo made it a match to remember with a superb set-piece effort. The scores were level again soon afterwards as Hernández sent Gianluigi Buffon the wrong way from the spot after Andrea Barzagli had fouled Giovani dos Santos. Italy pushed for another goal after the break, and although Riccardo Montolivo was denied by Corona, the Mexico goalkeeper could do nothing when Balotelli controlled a fine pass from Giaccherini and powered in from close range. Jayawardene slams unbeaten 84 as Lanka post 253 for eight L

ONDON: Veteran Mahela Jayawardene brought all his experience into play as he struck an unbeaten 84 to guide Sri Lanka to a respectable 253 for eight in their ICC Champions Trophy match against Australia here today. Jaywardene made his runs off 81 balls and was involved in an useful partnership of 65 for the sixth wicket with Dinesh Chandimal, who contributed 31 off 32 balls. Australia will need to chase down the target in 29.1 overs to ensure a place in the semifinals from group A alongside England. The Lankans held the edge at the break, but in the event of Australia winning the game after 29.1 overs,

New Zealand will be through. Sent into bat, Sri Lanka were off to a poor start losing two wickets with just 20 runs on the board. The islanders lost Kusal Perera early, seamer Mitchell Johnson having the left-handed batsman trapped in front of the wicket. Clint McKay took the big wicket of Kumar Sangakkara when he had the experienced Sri Lankan batsman, trying to play his trademark shot through the cover region, caught by Glen Maxwell. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lahiru Thirimanne added 72 runs for the third wicket to steady the ship, before left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty sent back the opener, caught

at slip by a diving Shane Watson for a 58-ball 34. Diving to his right, Watson picked the ball low and onehanded. After labouring his way to a patient 57 off 86 balls, Thirimanne was done in by Johnson as he pulled a short and quick delivery outside off to Watson at midwicket. He hit four boundaries during his knock. By the Thirimanne got out, Sri Lanka had made 128 for four, and it was time for Jayawardene to take charge of the situation. Brief scores: Sri Lanka: 253/8 in 50 overs (Mahela Jayawardene not out 84, Lahiru Thirimanne 57; Mitchell Johnson 3/48).

Mahela Jayawardene slams a boundary in his entertaining unbeaten knock of 84.
