he state government yesterday swung into action for rescue and relief of pilgrims from the state who are stranded in Uttarakhand due to incessant rains and landslides. The issue was discussed in the state cabinet, after which the government announced Rs.10 crore as aid, and also decided to send a special flight to New Delhi to airlift the stranded people. As many as 1,353 pilgrims from various parts of Maharashtra are reportedly stuck in different parts of Uttarakhand. While officials man-

ore than a month after IndiGo Airlines was accused of deplaning a 16-year old handicapped girl, Shauna, and her parents from a Bangalore-Mumbai flight, her father is about to move court to seek a refund of airfare, compensation for physical and mental anguish caused to Shauna, and an apology from the airline. Prior to this, a complaint was filed by Shauna’s mother with the Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI) on May 31. However, since there was no response from the airline, the family has now been advised to file a case against them.

Shauna, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was returning from Bangalore with her parents after post surgical treatment on May 13, by Indigo Airlines flight SG 110. Although the airline was asked in advance to make arrangements for a wheelchair for Shauna, her parents allege they had to wait for over 45 minutes to get one. After the security check, fitness to fly certificate and indemnity bond were submitted, Shauna was given a seat. However, just before the aircraft could start, she and her parents were asked to deplane, as the airline felt that Shauna could not Continued on pg 7 «

DREAMS GO SOUTH Strong sale numbers of Mumbai’s real estate for first five months see South Mumbai property sales lead the pack By Mayura Shanbaug

he sales figure of the property market through the first five months of the year defies the current sentiments that buying a house in the maximum city is beyond reach of a common man and that the market has stagnated. Sales registrations have held strong, given the low base of the last year, coupled with the festive season launches post a long hiatus. After the strong spurt in March 2013, where sales registration hit a 31-month high, April and May witnessed a small monthly decline of 8% and 6%, respectively; however, grew 24% and 15%, respectively, on a year on year basis. The number of sales in both the months remained

north of the 6,000 mark. The growth was led by sales from Mumbai ‘City’ as against suburban Mumbai on account of the large launches that took place in the citycentre. In fact, the number for ‘City’ sales was positive not only compared to the last year but also compared to the last quarter. “However, given the lack of launches in the last few months and the expected slowness during the monsoon season, we expect sales registration numbers to weaken over the next few months,” said Kejal Mehta, Research Analyst with Prabhudas Lilladher. Two days thereafter, a complaint was filed against them on behalf of the group and police restrained them from leaving the country and impounded their passports. They then approached the Supreme Court. According to the petition, Purnima Upadhyay said that as per the statistics of the Health Department, as of June 2012 there were 3,431 and 561 children afflicted with moderately acute and severely acute malnutrition respectively. “Children who were moderately underweight and severely underweight numbered 10,047 and 3,798 respectively. In the span of three months between April and June, there were 81 deaths, 42 stillbirths and four cases of maternal mortality. Though malnutrition has been raging uncontrolled for decades, the official figures for the total number of malnourished

children for the last two years remained at 14, 000,” said Upadhyay. While arguing on Wednesday, Upadhyay told the division bench that even after earlier directions to the government by the High Court,to fill up vacant posts in hospitals, till date there are still no gynecologist, pediatricians, radiologists and anesthetics. Reacting to this, the division bench consisting of Justice D. Y. Chandrachud and Justice Amjad Sayed said, “The Government makes doctors sign a bond stating that they will serve in such areas. Why aren’t they being deployed? We are thoroughly dissatisfied with the inaction

on the part of the state government. If action is not taken a contempt notice against the secretary of the Public Health Department will be issued within two weeks and we will direct the government to deploy gynecologists, pediatricians, radiologists and anesthetics at hospitals in tribal areas where there is a dearth of emergency medial care.” After the hearing, the court posted the matter for two weeks and directed the state government to file a reply on what action it has taken in tackling the dearth of doctors in hospitals in Melghat. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 2013

From Niagara Falls to the Grand Canyon It will be one of the most daring and captivating live events in history - Nik Wallenda, known as “The King of the High Wire,” will traverse the majestic Grand Canyon, without using a harness. Wallenda will tightrope walk higher than he’s ever attempted before at 1,500 feet above the Little Colorado River, a height greater than the Empire State Building. In 2012, Wallenda became the first person to tightrope walk directly over Niagara Falls from the U.S. to Canada at a height of 200 feet. He himself is reported to have said, “The stakes don’t get much higher than this. “The only thing that stands between me and the bottom of the canyon is a two-inch thick wire. I’m looking forward to showing the audience a view of the canyon they’ve never seen before.” Wallenda is just 34, and for him, the event is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to walk at such a great height as well as a chance to honor his great-grandfather, the legendary Karl Wallenda, who died after falling from a tightrope in

Puerto Rico in 1978. The Grand Canyon, one of America’s most visited tourist destinations, provides a spectacular backdrop to the event. The tightrope crossing will take place in a remote section of the canyon operated by the Navajo National Parks and Recreation. You can watch it live on the Discovery Channel on Monday, June 24, at 5.30am IST onwards. We can tell you one thing, it will be worth the trouble and certainly beat the Oscars hands down! If you want to be reminded, send an SMS < DISCOVERYCHANNEL Y> to 56161. If you miss it in the morning, you will be able to catch it again at 8 pm on the same day. But it won’t be live!

Air Force of India and other ‘shorties’

We still cannot figure out why the press itself was so enraged when Justice Markandey Katju, chairman of the Press Council of India, suggested that journalists, like

those in other professions, needed to be trained formally and perhaps licensed to practice their professions. After all, proper training never harmed anyone, though we suspect that much of the so-called “training” being imparted by the teeming numbers of J Schools that have cropped up, are actually contributing to the problem rather than solving it! Yesterday morning we listened as an excitable young thing (there really is no other kind) on NDTV, reporting on the floods at

Kitna deti hai?

Of course no-one asked the question – not when the model itself was surrounded by media and photographers furiously clicking away, practically ignoring the two other models in LBDs brought in to lean fetchingly against it. In fact, at Tote on the Turf yesterday morning, where the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 was being launched with much fanfare, one got the impression that they were rather considered in the way! The fanfare was because these were no ordinary Lamborghinis but part of the India Serie Speciale, coming with a price tag of Rs 3.06 crore (ex Maharashtra showroom). Actually, says Autocar, “It is the same, just jumped up a little on the occasion of the car maker’s 50th anniversary”. They had a big do recently in Italy to mark the event, and because there are biggish plans for India as well, what better way than to link up car with anniversary and India colours! Did we mention that? There are three colours available: red, white and orange to mimic (you guessed it) the tricolour. And one more specialty is the fact that only six are being made, so this limited edition is really limited. One has already been snapped up, so our readers are urged to rush if they want one of the

Uttarakhand, gasped and gulped her way through a report. On the ground, she pointed to the sky where there was a helicopter, urging viewers to look at what “the Air Force of India” had sent in to rescue stranded pilgrims on what she called a “shortie”. Later in the report, seemingly without drawing a breath and keeping up a continuous line of largely repetitive patter, she asked the “strandees”, “Has the government done anything to help you?”, setting off the standard moans. Neither she, nor any of the other Azad Shrivastav | ADC reporters on other channels, to be fair, thought it essential perhaps to ask pilgrims why they make their pilgrimages so late in the season, so close to the monsoon. At which point we switched off.

he Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) have arrested Police Inspector (PI) Manohar Gavare, who is attached to the Vinoba Bhave Nagar Police station, for accepting a bribe of Rs.25,000. Gavare allegedly took the bribe from a loader in return for not applying to the court to extend his son’s remand. A complaint in this regard was registered by the loader whose son Santosh Mithailal Gupta is in jail on charges of robbery. Santosh, a tempo driver, is under arrest since

May 26 for being involved in a fight on May 18. Santosh offered his tempo to a shopkeeper who dealt in rags, and was standing beside his shop when the shopkeeper had a fight with another shopkeeper. Although Santosh had nothing to do with the fight Gavare picked him up and listed him as one of the accused.

When Gupta begged Gavare to let his son go, Gavare told him to pay up Rs.1 lakh. If not he would not implicate Santosh. When Gupta was unable to arrange the money the boy was arrested. Gavare then offered to release Santosh on bail if his father paid Rs.75,000. Being a very poor man, Gupta was unable to arrange that amount either. Finally, Gavare said he would be willing to go down to Rs.25,000. A desperate Gupta then approached volunteers of Aam Aadmi Party including Dindayal Rai to help him. Rai thought about it and ap-

proached the Anti Corruption Bureau in Worli and they immediately offered to lay a trap. Rai arranged for the required Rs.25,000. ACP Katke of ACB laid the trap and caught Gavare red handed near Al Barkat English High School. Aam Aadmi Party believes that we have to expose corruption at all levels. “The police are becoming increasingly brazen in their greed and they need to be checked. We demand that the case against Santosh be quashed and he be released immediately,” said a spokesperson for the party.

The investigators learned that the trio, of which Lokesh is the head, is the second biggest bookie group in Delhi after that of Tinkoo Delhi. Even after the arrest of Ramesh Vyas, who was the key link between bookies

abroad, the trio did not stop accepting bets on the IPL-6 season. Vyas was arrested by the city’s crime branch on May 14 from South Mumbai, while the trio was operating from Gurgaon in Delhi, said police. In fact, the trio was in touch with Vyas, whose arrest exposed the international betting racket, added police. Meanwhile, Bharat Delhi

Watery Grave Mumbai teen drowns at picnic spot near Vasai By Suresh Golani

A

one-day picnic to enjoy the rains turned into a tragedy for a group of Mumbai-based collegians when a wave, caused by torrential rains, swept one of them away at a waterfall in Tungareshwar Hills near Vasai, on Tuesday evening. According to the Valiv police, the group of six youngsters (aged between 18 to 20 years), including three girls from Jogeshwari, reached the place at around 5 pm. After paying a visit to an ashram on the hillock, they decided to take a swim in the stream, which is fed by a waterfall. The youngsters were appar-

ently frolicking when a rogue wave caused by the very heavy rains swept them into deeper waters. While five were rescued by locals, their friend, Akshay Jadhav (19), drowned and could not be traced. His body was recovered early on Wednesday morning, said the police. “It appears that the revellers did not know to swim and had apparently failed to gauge the depth of the water. However, it has been confirmed that they were not in an inebriated state,” said Senior Police Inspector, Rajendra Mohite, adding that a case of accidental death has been registered in this connection.

Shauna’s parents tried explaining to the flight commander Capt. Ajay Sharma and the airport manager, that they had traveled with Shauna by another airline and faced no problem. However, they were still asked to deplane and made to wait at

Bangalore airport till midnight without any arrangements. They ultimately made their own arrangements to reach Mumbai, and were not even offered a refund of their airfare. The ADC tried several times to reach IndiGo Airline spokesperson Ms. Sakshi Batra via telephone and email, but received no response.

“Lease numbers have remained strong despite slackness in the commercial real estate space. Hence, any pick-up in the same could only propel the number northwards,’ he added. Several launches from developers in the listed and unlisted space in the city are on the cards; however, they have been getting delayed on account of approvals and clearances. According to the experts the second half of this year will also be stronger in terms of launches, coinciding with the festive season. The RBI, in its mid-quarter monetary policy review, effected no changes in either the repo rate or the CRR. “RBI’s cautious tone makes monetary easing in the near term a bit uncertain, which is not so positive for the real estate sector as it is unlikely that lending rates would come down in a hurry,” explained Mehta.

Another metro corridor for Mumbai? T

he Union cabinet is likely to consider a proposal to build a third metro corridor in Mumbai, which would run from Colaba to Bandra and Santacruz, in its meeting on Thursday. Sources said the Urban Development Ministry had forwarded a proposal for the setting up of a 33km long underground section that would connect Colaba to Bandra and would run further to Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ), reports PTI. Officials said while the previous two metro corridors in Mumbai, line 1 and line 2, were being developed in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, the third line would have the centre and the state government as stakeholders. A part of the funding would be done by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The cost of the project is estimated around Rs 23,000 crore.

Postmortem report says Jiah Khan died of hanging

P

ostmortem report of Jiah Khan has concluded that the actress died due to hanging and no external injuries were found on her body, police said on Wednesday. "The postmortem report has found that the death of Jiah Khan was due to hanging and no other external wounds were found," they said. Jiah (25) hanged herself at her residence on June 3, allegedly over broken relationship with aspiring actor Suraj Pancholi, son of actor couple Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab. Police arrested Suraj (21) and booked him on the charge of abetment to suicide following the incident. The actress' mother blamed Suraj for driving her daughter to suicide and later handed over a six-page letter, purportedly written by Jiah, to police, throwing light on the relationship between the two. The letter did not mention the person it is addressed to and narrates emotional travails of its writer. Police are yet to verify if the letter was indeed written by Jiah and are awaiting report of handwriting experts.

ddressing the crowd on the 47th anniversary of the Shiv Sena, first after the death of Sena chief Bal Thackeray, son and party president Uddhav clarified that he will not change the Sena style of functioning. Reaffirming the Sena faith in Hindutva ideology, he lashed out at Bihar chief minister, Nitish Kumar, for pulling out of the BJP-led NDA. Addressing the Sena cadres at Shanmukhananda Hall, he wanted to

know as to where these so-called secularist were when the Kashmiri Pandits were being driven out of the Kashmir valley by terrorists. Commenting upon the Mahalaxmi Racecourse controversy, the Sena president reiterated his plea of not to make it an prestige issue. Uddhav stated that Mumbaikars had the first claim on the Racecourse land. Taking on NCP chief Sharad Pawar, he said that the NCP leader always eyed vacant lands. ity and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the planning agency of Navi Mumbai, will soon allot 40 square metres of land to salt pan workers, as was decided in a meeting held recently at CIDCO Bhawan in Belapur. Sanjay Bhatia, Vice-chairman and managing director of CIDCO, assured the delegation of salt pan workers whose lands were taken away for the development of city some 40 years ago. The salt pan workers and project affected people (PAP) have been demanding their due compensation for a long time. Sanjay Bhatia termed the demand a long-pending and assured the delegating of PAPs that the planning agency is keen to resolve the issues. The representatives of salt pan workers had threatened during their last meeting on July 2012 to address their issues at earliest otherwise they would intensify their protest. Former MLC Manda Mhatre who led the delegation, said, “The issues

pertaining to land allotment among other were pending for around 40 years. Now, the farmers who had lost their lands for the development of the city have been in starving like situation.” She adds that they have got only assurances so far. The delegation consisted of MLA Vivek Patil, former Panvel Municipal Council chief JM Mhatre to discuss the issue. CIDCO chairman Pramod Hindurao was also present during the meeting. During the last year meeting, CIDCO accepted the demand to allot measuring 40 sq metre lands to salt pan workers. “Even after oneyear, they had not any concrete steps towards allotment of land,” said MLA Vivek Patil. After the meeting, a CIDCO official informed that they would soon start the procedure to allot plots. “We have asked to submit a list of salt pan workers to the CIDCO at the earliest. So that the process can be fastened,” said the official. amit.srivastav@afternoondc.in

He called upon the cadres to unite and fulfill the dream of late Sena chief in unfurling the saffron flag atop Mantralaya again. Earlier, last night BJP president Rajnath Singh called on Uddhav Thackeray at his Matoshree residence. Sources disclosed that it was purely a courtesy visit.

ontinuing its crackdown against immigrants illegally staying in the region, the AntiHuman Trafficking Wing of the Thane (rural) police arrested 17 people, including five women of Bangladeshi origin, from various construction sites in Nalasopara on Monday. Acting upon information received about the presence of illegal immigrants in Nalasopara, a police team led by API Atul Aher, carried out search operations at construction sites in Achole, Alka-

puri and Moregaon and arrested 17 people who failed to produce legitimate documents to authorize their stay in the country. All the accused have been charged under Sections 3 and 6 of the Passport Act, 1950 and The Foreigners Act, 1946. The police suspect that many more such illegal immigrants might be staying in the locality. “We have also arrested a contractor, identified as Ramesh Pawar, who helped recruit the immigrants and are checking if more Bangladeshi nationals are illegally staying in the area,” said API Aher. More pseudo-secular than secular?

Ponder awhile…

“The tendency to claim God as an ally for our partisan value and ends is the source of all religious fanaticism.” — Reinhold Niebuhr

JD(U) finds a new secular ally FTER being in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for A 17 years, Bihar JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar has discovered it is communal. Just one ‘communal’ leader in the BJP — Narendra Modi — has changed his mindset and made him leave the alliance and move towards the Congress party – his new secular ally. It is really a wonder how he was in a alliance with a communal party all these years. Nitish Kumar’s move is to some extent opportunistic. For the last one year, he has been trying to get from the UPA special status for the state. Now that he has dropped BJP, chances are he will join the Congress and fight 2014 election together along with the latter. The half-way mark in the Bihar assembly is 122. The JD(U) has now got a thin majority. The motion expressing confidence in Nitish Kumar’s government was passed by 126 voters supporting it. The BJP members had walked out and the final verdict shows that the government must have got required support from the Congress. It becomes clear that the Congress has played a well-thought out strategy. Just now it is a non-entity in Bihar. It stands to gain if it fights the 2014 Lok Sabha poll along with the JD(U). It must be also looking forward to some immediate gains. It has some important bills which need to be passed in the ensuing Monsoon Session of Parliament. It has a big problem getting majority in the House and the support of 10 JD(U) MPs might help it deal with it.

HEN Nitish Kumar made his announcement about breaking relations with the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) last week on ‘secular’ grounds, I happened to be driving down the Mumbai-Goa highway in the pouring rain. This is one of our major highways, but I was in a rural stretch that went past villages that were creeping their way onto the highway as they developed haphazardly, into small towns. The highway, therefore, has come to resemble a broken village road. In the rain, it becomes a nightmare of clogged traffic that includes all forms of vehicular transport from the most primitive rural kind to modern articulated lorries of vast proportions. The observant traveler cannot fail to notice how hard it is for these lorries to negotiate the endless unmarked speed breakers on a road that is itself an endless speed breaker. Nor can he fail to notice the spreading pools of rotting garbage that line the highway and spill across it with the rains. They pour out of the squalid, ugly villages and towns on either side, that in the absence of municipal facilities dump their waste on the edge of the highway.

impressive assiduousness. Narendra Modi is often charged by the Congress Party of manipulating the media, but he is a novice compared to what the Chief Minister of Bihar has managed to do. Let me give you one small example. In the 2010 Bihar election, it was the Bharatiya Janata Party that nearly doubled its seats going from 55 in the 2005 election to 91. It won 36 more seats, while the Janata Dal (United) went up less dramatically from 88 to 115. But, to discover this you would have needed to read the fine print, because every political commentator in the country projected it as a ’massive victory’ for Nitish. Long articles appeared in the national press about his schemes in rural Bihar that had allegedly reduced poverty and increased growth rates dramatically. Almost nobody no-

Nitish too wants to be PM Why am I telling you all this in a week that I am writing about the very ‘secular’ Chief Minister of Bihar? What does it have to do with his recent ‘secular’ drama? In my view it has everything to do with it, and with every other political drama that grabs headlines every week when we should be talking of much more important things like our enormous problems of unplanned urbanization. And our even more enormous problems with waste disposal so inadequate, that half of India’s diseases spread from rotting garbage and dirty water. If the political dramas gave us a break, we would be able to talk of our serious, chronic problems. The dramas give us no choice but to write about the topic of the moment. So here is my analysis of what the supposedly high-minded chief minister of Bihar is up to. For more than a year now I have heard from colleagues who have traveled to Patna, that Nitish Kumar has his eyes set on being prime minister. It was after he won his second term in 2010, that he began to contemplate the possibilities of attaining the highest office in the land, and he has worked towards this with

ON THE SPOT Tavleen Singh ticed that Sushil Modi deserved even more credit for having almost swept all the seats in urban Bihar. Nitish Kumar then went on to project himself as the creator of what his acolytes started to call the Bihar model, in which they said economic development was slower but more effective because it was ‘inclusive’. This idea got international currency not long ago when Imran Khan said that he would like to use the ‘Bihar model’ of development in Pakistan if he ever got the chance. The truth is that there is nothing new about Nitish Kumar’s economic ideas. He is an old-fashioned socialist of the Ram Manohar Lohia genre; all that he has done is to implement his socialist ideas better than the chief ministers who went before him. There is no question that there are signs of

progress in Bihar, but since it went through a dark age under Mr. and Mrs. Laloo Yadav, any improvement would be seen as a miracle. And why should Nitish Kumar not boast about it? Why should his suave, ex-bureaucrat spokesmen not sing paeans to him in the drawing rooms of Delhi and on primetime television? Why should all of us not rejoice that India’s poorest, most backward state should finally be in the hands of a man who is sincere about dragging it up by the bootstraps?

Now Advani seen as secular? My problem is not with Nitish Kumar’s socialist economic ideas, although I am not a socialist, and nor do I have any problems with him wanting to become prime minister. It is an ambition that anyone who enters a career in politics should have. My only problem with Nitish Kumar’s withdrawal from the NDA is with his ‘secular’ reasons for doing so. He now says that he will return to the NDA if it is put once more in the hands of L.K. Advani whom he now considers a ‘secular’ leader. Has he forgotten that it was Advani who rode his chariot from Somnath to Ayodhya with the specific purpose of building a temple to Rama on the exact spot where the Babri Masjid stood? Has he forgotten the thousands of Muslims who were killed in the rathyatra’s wake? Has he forgotten that the violence was so bad that Laloo Yadav as chief minister of Bihar refused to let Advani’s chariot go beyond Samastipur? Has he forgotten that it was Advani during the course of the Ayodhya movement who invented the term ‘pseudosecularism’ to denounce the kind of secularism that has been the moral creed of political parties like his own? Speaking of ‘pseudo-secularism’ it is a good time to revive the expression, because if we have seen a recent example, it has been in the withdrawal of the Janata Dal (U) from the NDA. Not even the lefty political pundits in Delhi who despise Narendra Modi have dared say that the Bihar chief minister has come out as a shining example of secularism. Even they have noticed the political opportunism of the move. For me personally I have serious reservations now about Nitish Kumar after this because in my view the most dangerous kind of political leaders are those who are shameless hypocrites. They are impossible to trust.

‘Love is something absolutely unselfish’ L

OVE is something absolutely unselfish, that which has no thought beyond the glorification and adoration of the object upon which our affections are bestowed. It is a quality which bows down and worships and asks nothing in return. Merely to love is the sole request that true love has to ask. It is said of a Hindu saint (Mirabai) that when she was married, she said to her husband, the king, that she was already married. “To whom?” asked the king. “To God,” was the reply. She went among the poor and the needy and taught the doctrine of the extreme love for God. One of her prayers is significant in showing the manner in which her heart was moved: “I ask not for wealth; I ask not for position; I ask not for salvation; place me in a hundred hells if it to be Thy wish, but let me continue to regard Thee as my love.” The early language abounds in the beautiful prayers of this woman. When her end came, she entered into ‘samadhi’ on the banks of the river. She composed a beautiful song in which she stated that she was going to meet her beloved. Men are capable of philosophical analysis of religion. A woman is devotional by nature and loves God from the heart and soul and not

JD(U) exit will spell doom for NDA in 2014 DIVORCE of the BJP-JD(U) alliance in Bihar will end the existence of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) which is the first step in shaping the political contours of the 2014 general election battle. It will mark the isolation of Narendra Modi’s BJP on the national scene, leaving it with just two allies—Shiv Sena and Akali Dal. I strongly feel that BJP under Modi may not come to power and it may not even cross the halfway mark of 272 seats due to the communal and authoritative style of working of Modi, who being the enemy of the minority community and guilty of butchering innocent people during the Gujarat riots in 2002, will never get the support of Muslim voters who may likely vote for the Congressled UPA and will see to it that a person like Modi whose hands are full of blood does not get a chance to become the next prime minister of the country. The break-up in BJP-JD(U) ties is the doom for the saffron party and for which Modi and his party leadership will be

THE BJP has taken a right decision in elevating the status of Narendra Modi and making it easier for him to become the prime ministerial candidate of the Party. Today, he is the only person in the BJP to have the charisma and the organisational and administrative qualities necessary to become the

prime minister. These are the qualities which Rahul Gandhi and to a great extent, L.K. Advani are lacking. Although Advani, who was understandably disappointed, chose to stay away from the Goa convention, resigned and even withdrew his resignation within 36 hours, he should realise that such moves will only damage the integrity of the Party and affect their electoral success. NARENDRA MODI has become a headache, not only for Indian politicians, but also for the US. The decision of BJP that declared Modi as election campaigner shook the world. As per BJP’s strategy, Modi would be the most eligible candidate for the post of prime minister. This has not gone down well with the US. The US has so far taken a stand against Modi. Till date, after 2002 riots, US has denied a visa to Modi, but what would happen if the NDA wins the 2014 poll battle and Modi becomes the PM. THANK God the decks are now cleared for Namo to be selected as Prime minister in waiting. Nitish Kumar and his ego problems, and L.K. Advani and his pipe dreams are now laid at rest. Atleast for the time being! Politics is a dirty game and no one is clean. But at least one has some hope for a man who knows how to govern and bring India back on the tracks. Gujarat is an example of what can happen if a chief minister means business. The UPA is pretending that Modi is “no threat to us. And Rahul Gandhi is the heir apparent etc.” India have a chance to be a major super power under Modi. The so called secular parties must stop using the Godhra card against Modi. The UPA cannot afford to do that. The sullied image of the riots and murders following Indira Gandhi’s assassination are very much on the horizon. ‘Yeh public hain, yeh sab janti hain’! NORTH INDIA in general and Uttarakhand in particular received high rainfall and caused damage to property and many lives were lost in the fury of the rivers and their tributaries in the entire area. People ran for dear life but before they could realise danger had struck them with the fall of buildings on the river side. Such a situation could have been avoided had the rivers been nationalised and connected to each other to avoid such a disaster. At a time when there is water shortage in the State of Tamil Nadu, river water is overflowing and surplus water is going to the sea. Both Mandakini and Alaknanda, major tributaries of the Ganga, are flowing over the danger mark and the bridge connecting Rudraprayag and Gaurikund has been damaged leading to its closure. However, a source revealed that the tender to fill the garden soil was given at the cost of Rs.400 to Rs.500 per square foot. When asked about the construction rubble being dumped at the site, he said that it was being dumped at night by a rubble mafia and he was unable to confront them. The ADC then contacted Kharat, who said, “Rubble mafias are mainly antisocial elements who dump debris late at night. I tell my assistant engineers to inspect the site early in the morning. >> What started as reconnecting with a hobby, Ria Sakraney and Divya Dev have transformed it into something noble and worthwhile. This weekend you might come across a colourful crane with a good deed; fulfill it, take a picture and send it in to A Crane A Day

hen most of us have a few weeks to kill, we usually space out in front of the television or just laze around, enjoying our time off. But not Ria Sakraney. Instead of wasting away her time, Ria decided to start a community project — something that would make the city a better place. What did she come up with? A Crane A Day — a blog that started out with the idea of making colourful paper cranes and photographing them in different places every day. But, it’s turned into something more than that. Ria, along with her friend Divya Dev, started Good Crane Weekend, which was based on the observation that people in Mumbai are often oblivious to the people around them. With A Crane A Day, they decided to push people to think of the greater good, even if it was for just one weekend, in the hope that it would be a permanent change that would stick. Therefore, on June 21, 22 and 23, thousands of origami cranes are going to be distributed to various restaurants in the city where they will be given out to the customers. Each crane will have a simple good deed written on it that is to be carried out by the people who receive them. Furthermore, these acts of goodness should be documented by way of pictures. I made a separate account on Instagram for the crane and decided to post pictures of it in a new location every day. At the same time, my friend Divya had also quit her job and we brainstormed on how we could take this further. We wanted for it to be more than just pretty pictures; we wanted to make a community project that would make the city a better place.

What is the ultimate aim of this project? We just hope to make the city a little better place; one small deed at a time. We want to show people that it’s easy to do something nice in your day — either for yourself or for others. Doing something nice makes you feel good.

Have you encountered a Grinch or two along the way? Of course! « 5 WAYS TO ROCK: MONSOON MAKEUP 1. have a strong base Say no to foundation during the monsoon because it’s just going to run down your face in lines when it starts to pour. Moisturise and wash your face properly and apply a waterproof compact or BB cream. Use a cream-based blush and avoid anything shiny or powdery. 2. go waterProof Powdered products are a no-no so and if you must use an eyeshadow, make sure it is cream based. Use nudes, beiges and pastels and a waterproof kajal for your eyes. If you’re going out, remember to only use waterproof mascara sparingly to avoid clumps and smudgy lines.

We think that Alia Bhatt looks cute and sweet in her age appropriate dress. However, we’re not sure how appropriate the shoes are for her look. However, the short lace dress makes Alia look feminine and girly. Apart from those shoes, she’s accessorised pretty well.

We are over the hi-lo hemline. No matter which way you present it. The outfit seems fine at first, but on closer inspection it looks weird. The detail on the shoulder makes her look like she’s carrying a backpack and it’s never fashionable to sweep the floor.

3. stay light Keep colours light and natural. Don’t use heavy eye makeup, too much blush or an overdose of eyeliner or you’ll end up looking like a raccoon when it begins to run in the rain. Even waterproof makeup can smudge if it’s pushed too far.

define your eyes To define your eyes without looking like a racoon, we suggest picking up Lancome’s waterproof Le Crayon kohl pencil. Price `1,050 stylish lashes Add a little glitter to your lashes and help them stay stylish during monsoon with the Hypnose Star mascara from Lancome. Price `1,900

4. bright liPs We know you’d love a little colour during the dull monsoon, so don’t be upset that we just advised you to stay away from colour when it comes to makeup. But, we give you permission to brighten up your lips with shades of pink, subtle oranges and nudes.

>> Use cream-based blush and shades of pink on your lips to keep your makeup looking great during monsoon

5. keeP it tinted The best option for monsoon is to use tints. Save the gloss for a sunny day and stain your lips and cheeks with bright colours to look fashionable and to avoid a fashion disaster in the midst of a torrential downpour. Use a lip pencil to retain colour for longer.

richa chadda

If there’s one thing we hate to see during the monsoon it’s layers of cakey makeup. Richa’s casual outfit may be tottering on the wild side (not in a good way) but her pancake face seems be ready for the red carpet. An overall fail.

« STYLIST SPEAK We’ve given you the looks and the makeup and now, we get fashion stylist and blogger of Head2Heels, Roxanne D’Souza, to help out with the do’s and don’ts of monsoon wear l Do invest in a good pair of footwear. Anything plastic, rubber or patent will do. Gumboots are my hot favourite this season. l Don’t wear flip flops. Flip flops have no traction at all and you will land bottom first into a puddle. Also, they should be steered clear of at all costs to avoid splashing muck on your clothes from behind, while walking! l Do go easy on the accessories. You wouldn’t want the metal from your favourite pieces rusting after the monsoon. l Don’t wear jeans, unless you really have to. Denim gets heavy during the rains, adds weight and can sometimes droop dangerously low. If you do have to wear them, go for darker shades and washes instead. l Do swap your regular tote for a waterproof one. Most bags can’t handle the moist weather and start to peel. l Don’t be afraid to carry forward your summer outfits, into the monsoon. Shorts and summer dresses are a rage during this season. l Do carry an umbrella at all times or even a windcheater. The drowned rat look doesn’t make a good sight. l Don’t wear lightweight fabrics. These fabrics tend to get soaked easily and also become transparent. l Do wear bright colours. When the weather tends to be all dull and grey, bright colours are a welcome change from the dark skies. l Don’t use hairspray or too many leave-in hair products as they can stick to your hair, make it heavy and lead to dandruff. l Do switch to waterproof makeup to avoid looking like an antagonist from a horror movie.

It is possible that the hatred you feel towards your co-worker will have you reacting to their mistakes in a drastic manner; mistakes, which otherwise you would’ve let go. Control these feelings and react to them as you would to another co-worker.

Feel completely lost at your internship? reaD on to knoW What to Do

I have recently joined a famous publication house as an intern. The problem is that nobody here explains anything to me and yet they expect me to do my job perfectly. My supervisor gets very irritated if I ask her a lot of questions. I’m here to learn, but it seems like no one wants to teach me anything. How do I make this situation a bit me-friendly? — pratha roy, mahalaxmi Dear pratha, Aww! We sympathise with you. This is indeed a very tricky situation to deal with especially if you are an intern. However, from the many experiences that we’ve heard of, this is how

most big publishing houses work. What you could do is try to find some senior in the team who seems friendlier. Get them to solve your doubts and queries when they seem free. Or you can ask them if you could come early or stay back to get the hang of a few things. Show that you’re eager to learn. Apart from that, for the minor issues, try and figure it out from the juniors in the team who have recently joined or who are not quite so high up the hierarchy. Mostly, they’ll be more empathetic to your situation. As far as your supervisor is concerned, you’ll have to be sweet to her since you have no other choice.

I recently joined a start-up online portal as a content writer. Apart from me, there’s just the editor in my team and while she is not unhappy with my work, she keeps taunting me about not contributing in her discussions with the co-owner of the portal. The problem is that I don’t have enough knowledge about the subject that they are discussing. Her taunts are affecting my self-confidence. What can I do? — ameesha verma, khar Dear ameesha, The first thing that you should do is go up to her and tell her your problem. Mostly, she will

listen to you and help you out. But, if she still continues to taunt you, we have one question for you — do you really need this job? If no, then consider looking for another one. When your boss is behaving in this way, there’s little that you can do. She is a bad boss who can never be a mentor. And keep in mind that no job is worth losing your confidence. Hey DuDe If hi-fives, back thumps and “hey dude” are part of your daily routine with your man, then it’s safe to say that he thinks you’re more buddy than babe. No matter how laidback a girl is, if her own boyfriend treats her like a bro instead of his girlfriend, it can spell trouble. If you don’t put a stop to it now, he’s eventually going to stop seeing you as his girlfriend and treat you like one of the boys. And you know what boys discuss, right? Other girls they’d like as their girlfriend.

« SOS: SOLVE OUR SITUATION! Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? Read on...

I live with a flatmate and we get on really well. She’s punctual with rent, shares household chores and is sweet. She is single, while I am in a steady relationship. However, she has no problem with Tarun coming over. And she likes hanging out with us. How do I look?

A relationship is about partnering with an equal. If you feel that he doesn’t take you seriously, you need to make him start doing so. Start by going out by yourself without consulting him. Show him that you’re an adult who can take care of herself and lead her own life.

« DEAR GRACE, I HAVE A PROBLEM... Dear Grace,

My boyfriend of a few months is a great guy and I really like him. The problem is that he starts his day with a cup of coffee. In a mug his ex-girlfriend gave him. I know it’s just a “small thing” but it’s driving me insane. I haven’t mentioned how I feel as yet, but it makes me feel as though he’s not over her or that he starts his day by thinking about her. She was the one who dumped him, by the

way. Other than that, he’s a great boyfriend who is very loving and supportive. What should I do? Misha Singh, Andheri Dear Misha, What you should not do is break the mug. Even accidentally. It’s not going to work sweetie and you will come across as a psycho lady. I doubt that your man picks up the same mug every morning out of love for

his ex; it’s probably just a habit. However, it seems that you have your doubts as your relationship is new and since he was the one who got dumped. The best and most grown up way to resolve this situation is to get him a new mug. If he starts his day with your mug, then you have your answer. If he doesn’t, well, both of you need to talk. Send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in

Great! Hot date?

Yes! It’s our one year anniversary. Oh! There he is !

Hi Tarun! Hey babe! Ready to rumble? Wow! You look hot! ...Oh, hey Mina, didn’t see you there.

Tarun, on the other hand, finds her slightly annoying. The next morning...

MAiD to MeASure Once your man gets home, are you running helter-skelter making him a snack, getting him the newspaper and putting his dirty clothes in the laundry? Isn’t there no job less rewarding than being your boyfriend’s full-time maid? We have three words for you, sister: Stop this now! This is the simplest problem to solve; just say “no” the next time he asks you to do something he can easily do himself. Doing things out of love (like cooking his favourite meal) is fine, but he needs to be appreciative and pull his own weight around.

The market opened down with a gap at the 5805 points level. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 51 points. Sentiment seemed bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 28 were gainers, while 22 stocks closed in the red. Some buying was witnessed in technology, IT and healthcare stocks, while heavy selling was seen in banking and consumer durables stocks.

Technical Analysis: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 3.93%. This change is small and indicates a moderate participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 740 were gainers, 644 were losers and 61 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

Support (1) = 5791. Support (2) = 5759. Resistance (1) = 5841. Resistance (2) = 5860.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY:

On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a second consecutive doji pattern. This indicates that the i ndecisi veness amongst investors continue s. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. H owever, the index is still below the 15 and 25 day’s moving averages, and both the averages are declining. This is negative. But the i ndex is still above the 5 and 2 00 day’s movi ng average and both the average s are rising. This is positive. As such these are mixed s ignals. The velocity parameters continue to remai n neutrally trended. Incidentally, the index is near its 200 days average which is at the 5807 points level. (The index tested that level intra-day, yesterday). This could be a strong support level and there i s a possibility that the index c oul d reverse from there. However, if it declines below it, than it would i ndicate a change in the pri mar y trend and a further decline could be expected. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 5798) Positive. Is below its 15-day average (at 5874) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 5963) Negative. Is above its 200-day average (at 5807) Positive.

Event: Norwest Venture Partners (NVP) has bought 14.3% stake in Gateway Distriparks’ (GDPL) subsidiary - Snowman Logistics (Cold chain business) - for a consideration of Rs600mn. This deal values the subsidiary at Snowman at Rs4.2bn. Analysis: Snowman issued 17 mn shares to NVP at Rs35 per share of snowman as part of the deal. GDPL owned 53% stake in this subsidiary before this transaction and in order to maintain its majority shareholding, Remain positive on the stock; near term concerns remain: We expect GDPL’s 1HFY14E profitability to remain under pressure on account of the declining container volumes at JNPT impacting its CFS cash-flows and 1-2 months further delay in its Faridabad ICD’s rail operations. However, the strong traction in the rail and the cold chain businesses should offset the decline in CFS profitability in FY14E. We factor in EBITDA & PAT CAGR of 17% & 8% respectively during FY13-15E periods. We retain our “BUY” recommendation on the stock with a target price of Rs160 per share valuing GDPL at ~12x its Sep’14 consolidated EPS.

Religare calls a ‘Sell’ on GSK Consumer CMP: Rs. 5710 Target Rs. 4400

We downgrade GSK Consumer from HOLD to SELL post the stock’s strong outperformance and rich valuations (45.4x/38.6x CY13/14). The stock has seen a massive re-rating post an open offer from the parent company; however, current valuations are unjustified as we don’t see any significant improvement in growth rates over the medium term. We marginally upgrade earnings and revise our Mar’14 TP to Rs 4,400 (from Rs 3,875 earlier). Stock re-rating post open offer by parent: The stock has seen a significant re-rating after the parent company increased its stake in GSK Consumer from 43.16% to 72.46%. The open offer price of Rs 3,900 has reduced stock liquidity, ascribing it a scarcity premium and leading to its strong outperformance (up 50% YTD). We believe the current stock price factors in a possible delisting by the parent company, which if it does, might happen at similar/higher valuations as compared to the open offer. However current valuations which are close to 20 year high are unsustainable, in our view. Downgrade to SELL with a Mar’14 TP of Rs 4,400: We marginally upgrade our CY14/CY15 earnings by ~1-2% and our TP to Rs 4,400, valuing the company at 28x Mar’15 earnings (average one-year fwd. P/E). Downgrade to SELL from HOLD. Key upside risks to our call: (a) delisting of the stock by parent company at a premium, (b) significant increase in volume growth rates, and (c) a drop in input cost inflation leading to higher-than-estimated margins.

First Call Research calls a ‘Buy’ on Blue Star CMP: Rs. 164 Target Rs. 180

Outlook and Conclusion: At the current market price of Rs. 160.75, the stock P/E ratio is at 10.89 x FY14E and 7.00 x FY15E respectively. Earning per share (EPS) of the company for the earnings for FY14E and FY15E is seen at Rs.14.76 and Rs.22.98 respectively. Net Sales of the company are expected to grow at a CAGR of 4% over 2012 to 2015E respectively. On the basis of EV/EBITDA, the stock trades at 0.62 x for FY14E and 0.59 x for FY15E. Price to Book Value of the stock is expected to be at 2.76 x and 2.66 x respectively for FY14E and FY15E. The Company’s effort to drive margins through price increases, value engineering, prudent working capital management and cost control coupled with a focus on improving the quality of new orders and Launches Wide Range Of Stylish Room Air- conditioners With Emphasis On Energy Efficiency, helped it return to profitability during the year. Apart from being energy efficient the Company also plans to promote its inverter line-up of residential split air conditioners for the benefit of energy conscious customers. The range of window air conditioners has also been enhanced with addition of models specifically for the north India market. The Company intends to further enhance these efforts in order to sustain this performance over the current year as well. We expect that the company surplus scenario is likely to continue for the next three years, will keep its growth story in the coming quarters also. While the external market environment continues to be challenging, businesses such packaged air-conditioning, room air conditioners, refrigeration products and after-sales service have a positive outlook. So, we recommend ‘BUY’ in this particular scrip with a target price of Rs. 180.00 for Medium to Long term investment Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

Glenmark gets USFDA approval for sclerosis drug. Gold prices fall by Rs 80 to Rs 28,400 per ten grams, silver remains steady at Rs 44,600 per kg. L

aunching eight upgraded versions across five passenger car platforms, Tata Motors in a bid to recoup lost market shares will also invest Rs 1,600 crore on its car division this fiscal. “We will invest Rs 1,600 crore in product development for the passenger vehicles division while the same for commercial vehicles will be Rs 1,400 crore,” Tata Motors Managing Director Karl Slym told reporters at the launch of the eight variants at its plant in Pune, yesterday. The company had invested Rs 3,000 crore on both its divisions’ last fiscal as well, he said. Tata Motors launched the variants under its ‘HorizoNext’ strategy aimed at addressing all the issues facing the company now and till the turn of 2020. It launched eight variants across five product offerings — the Indica hatchback, Indigo sedan, small car Nano, sports utility vehicle Safari and utility vehicle Sumo.

“It has been a challenging time for the passenger car vehicles as a segment. But our sales problems have been confounded by our lack of presence in what is called the soft-SUV space, which we are trying to rectify with these launches in the short-term and with new models in the long-term…Our goal is to enhance our market leadership in commercial vehicles and move to a strong podium finish in the passenger vehicle market.“ — Karl Slym, MD , Tata Motors

The new models are upgraded versions of the hatchback Indica which will sport a new ER4 engine, those of its sedan Indigo, and the small car Nano, all of which will also have a CNG version by September. The other platforms getting variants are the SUV Safari Storm and the utility vehicle Sumo, called Sumo Gold. These two will also sport a new CR engine and new gear box apart from better and more manoeuvrable steering, Ranjit Yadav, president for the Passenger Vehicles division, said. While the new variants of Sumo,

Indigo and Nano are ready for shipments, the Safari and Indica models will be ready for sale in the next two months, Slym said. For the past more than two quarters, the company has been witnessing steep drop in sales. In the April-May period, its sales fell a sharp 35 percent. Commenting on this, Slym, while blaming the overall pain points in the industry, said that the company’s absence in the softUV/SUV space, which has been the volume driver for a few players like Mahindra and Renault, is the reason for it.

he Shipping Ministry will award 30 port projects during the current financial year, which are likely to come up at an investment of about Rs 25,000 crore. “We have already finalised the Action Plan for this year and a target of 30 port development projects has been fixed,” Shipping Minister G K Vasan said at the agreement signing ceremony between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust and DP World’s subsidiary, Nhava Sheva Gateway Terminal. “These projects will bring in an additional capacity of 288 million tonnes per annum at an estimated investment of Rs 24,633 crore,” Vasan

,ASSOCHAM. “While there are about 21 PPP projects in the port sector with a share of 52 % worth over Rs 43,000 crore are under construction, eight projects worth about Rs 14,000 crore with a share of about 17 % are under bidding,” said Rawat. “Of the remaining, one project is in the expression of interest stage (EOI) and one has been cancelled.” he said. Gujarat accounts for lion’s share of over 50 % in the total number of completed projects in the ports sector that have been put to service delivery under the PPP model. Nehwal avenges loss to Gu

S

INGAPORE: Indian ace shuttler Saina Nehwal avenged her quarterfinal loss at the Thailand Open by Juan Gu with a comfortable straight-game victory over the Singaporean in the opening round of the Singapore Super Series. The World number two Indian took 40 minutes to pack off Juan, ranked 21, 21-14, 2321 in the women's singles competition at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to record her fifth victory over the local player. The 23-year-old from Hyderabad will next take on Japanese Eriko Hirose, who holds a 3-2 record against the Indian. The world number 12 had spoilt Saina's All England campaign when she beat her in straight games in the quarterfinals in the 2011 edition. Saina surged ahead to a 5-1 lead initially but Juan clawed back with four straight points. However, the Indian didn't allow Juan much chance after that and successfully kept her at bay to earn the bragging rights. In the second game, Juan was impressive as she held a 10-5 lead early on but Saina bounced back to level par at 12-12. After a brief fight, Saina was successful in grabbing the lead at 19-16 but Juan didn't want to go down without a fight. The Singaporean produced a four-point burst to lead 2019 but it was Saina who had the last laugh in the end. Meanwhile rising Indian shuttler Sai Praneeth B notched up a stunning straight-game victory over world number four Yun Hu of Hong Kong in the men's singles opening round.

The world number 61 Indian brushed aside the second seeded shuttler 21-9, 21-10 in a match that lasted 30 minutes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The 20-yearold from Hyderabad, who had spoilt former world and Olympics champion Taufik Hidayat's farewell in Indonesia, will next take on the winner between RMV Gurusaidutt and Wei Feng Chong in the second round. Praneeth had lost to Yun in straight games at the Vietnam International Challenge in 2009. However, all other Indians suffered defeats in the opening round to crash out of the tournament. Ajay Jayaram went down fighting 19-21, 21-18, 17-21 against fourth seed Kenichi Tago of Japan, while top seed Pengyu Du sent Anand Pawar packing 21-16 21-13 in another men's singles match. Another rising shuttler Sourabh Varma was defeated 17-21, 17-21 by Wing Ki Wong in another men's singles opening round match which lasted for 37 minutes. In women's singles, Arundhati Pantawane lost to world number 26 Bulgarian Petya Nedelcheva 18-21, 18-21, while PC Thulasi put up a gallant fight against world number 14 Indonesian Lindaweni Faetri before going down 2321, 16-21, 16-21 in an energysapping 66-minute match. In mixed doubles competition, Indian pair of Tarun Kona and Ashwini Ponnappa lost to third seeds Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir 6-21 10-21, while ArunVishnu and Aparna Balan suffered a 17-21 21-19 12-21 loss to Thai combo of Songphon Anugritayawon and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 2013

Former shuttler turned coach UDAY PAWAR has the rare knack of producing good players for India on the badminton circuit. From being a seasoned campaigner of his era and playing with shuttling greats like Prakash Padukone and Syed Mody, Pawar gets candid with NEIL JOSHI as he speak about his early days to later taking up coaching and nurturing talent who have created a mark on the international scene. He also talks about the progress of the women’s game in the country and how well India has performed on the international scene. In the 70’s and 80’s you had to confront two forces – namely Prakash Padukone and Syed Modi. How was it playing with and against them and how different was the atmosphere during that era? Prakash was the one who won nine national titles in a row and I lost to him twice in the final. But he was also in the top three in the world and the gap between him and rest of the India was very wide, there no chance of beating Prakash whereas in the case of Modi though I beat him a couple of times, I could not beat him in the nationals.

Despite starting playing singles, when did you decide on playing the doubles in the long run? During my playing days, most of the players played both because not only there weren’t any people to guide them but, somehow people felt the only chance of international exposure was being in the Indian team and if two players were to be sent the chances of Prakash and Mody sent was more. The only way of doing well in was to do well in doubles and being number one. Even though you were selected only for doubles, you could play singles also and that is why for a long time I played both and I wished there was a coach to guide me so I could chose one and excel in that. Because playing two events used to take a heavy toll on my body because by the time you reached the semis or the finals you had played twice the number of matches as compared to Prakash or Mody.

where technique and temperament has come in to play where you see five men and three girls are in the top 50. Nehwal has been the torchbearer for the last five years.

In this era, we have seen considerable success in the women’s arena as compared to earlier times. How has this shift occurred? To a certain extent I do believe the ladies field is little weaker as compared to men’s. A woman player can do far better in a shorter time as compared to their male counterparts as the competition isn’t as intense as the men’s. Besides Saina, we have another star who is doing well who is PV Sindhu and she is among the top 15 in the world. In terms of physique, she is better blessed than Saina because she is almost 5 feet10” and she is only 17. I think today, women from India are a force to reckon with. Women are definitely catching up with the men.

In the men’s circuit, your son Anand has reached his career best ranking recently. Also Parupalli Kashyap and Ajay Jayaram have played extremely well. How tough will it be for the boys to break in the top ten? Kashyap is already in the top 10, besides that Ajay is in the top 25. Then there is Guru Sai Dutt, my son and Sai Praneeth, these five are really doing well. It will be really difficult for them to retain their position and they will have to consistently do well. It a long period before they can be compared to what Saina has done. She has been in the top five continuously for the past five years, which is something commendable.

INTERVIEW

Detail your experience as a coach? Indians don’t get professional coaching and the gap between international players getting facilities as compared to India has become less because there are good coaches in India. Unfortunately, my academy has been handicapped because we don’t have any sponsors to support the programme. The expenses also have been quite heavy. The results we have produced have been due to my total involvement in coaching and also the fact that I have all the players in the academy who have begun playing with me. I have groomed them from the beginner’s stage to be national and international champions. The bond between me and my students is quite intense.

There has been a lull in India especially in the ability to create champions. The gap between players creating a wide impact on the scene is quite a lot. From Prakash to Pullela Gopichand and now to Saina Nehwal. What according to you is the reason for this? In the 40s we had Prakash Nathur [All England finalist], the 60s gave us Nandu Natekar and Suresh Goel who were really among the best in the world and then we had Prakash and Gopichand. But a lot has changed not only because of better facilities and coaching but also due to the scoring format where Indians can do well. This has made the game faster

What do you think are the prospects of the Indian Badminton League, which has been in the pipeline for a while now? This league will be helpful for the upliftment of the game in the country. If you have top players of the world playing in India, then many youngsters will get to watch them play at close quarters. Unless the Chinese are part of the IBL, it may not have the success what it is looking for.

How do you see your academy move on here and what future do you see for your son Anand Pawar? I have moved my academy to the Goregaon Sports Club two year back, and we have courts over here of international calibre. It has also significantly boosted badminton which has been played in the club. Anand has suffered a lot in various aspects. When you are training under different coaches until and unless you get personalized attention, you won’t progress. He has been with me for the last nine months and that has been working well for him because just a few weeks back he reached the semifinals of a Super Series tournament. So his training in our academy has been the right move for him.

IN BRIEF Indian eves crash out of FIH World League semifinal race

ROTTERDAM: The Indian women's hockey team put up yet another disappointing show to crash out of the semifinal race with a 1-8 drubbing at the hands of top-ranked Netherlands in the FIH World League Round 3 here. The Indian eves started the match on a bright note and dominated the early exchanges before fizzling out against the Dutch girls late last night. It took the hosts 21 minutes to get off the blocks when the Dutch had numbers in their favour on a trip down field allowing Kim Lammers to convert a chance with a slap shot from close range. Two minutes later from the break, captain Maartje Paumen doubled the Netherlands' lead by converting a penalty corner with a powerful flick to the upper right corner of the Indian goal.

Bhutia-led FPAI explain players’ grievances in Melbourne

NEW DELHI: Highlighting the Indian footballers' grievances over nonpayment of salaries as per terms laid down in their contracts, former captain Bhaichung Bhutia recently presented a report at the FIFPro Asia Conference in Melbourne. The International Federation of Professional Footballers, usually known as FIFPro, is a worldwide representative organisation for professional players. At the moment, there are 49 national players associations who are members of FIFPro. Bhutia is the president of the Football Players Association of India (FPAI). A few Indian clubs have, in recent times, were learnt to have failed to fulfil their players' contractual obligations. According to an FPAI member, they believe Indian clubs' contracts have "flaws" and they are seeking to "correct" it. One such flaw is the "absence of injury clause" in the contract of some clubs. As a result, players do not get paid in full if they get injured either while training or playing a match.

ONDON: An impressive bowling performance powered England to the Champions Trophy summit clash as the hosts thrashed South Africa by seven wickets in the first semifinal. The hosts bundled out South Africa for a meagre 175 after inserting them in to bat and then comfortably overhauled the target with 12.3 overs to spare. Such was the domination of the England bowlers that AB de Villiers and Co found it difficult to buck the trend of faltering in major ICC tournaments. It was complete team effort by England as all the bowlers played a part in demolishing the South African top and middle batting order. England had their rivals on

Nadal seeded five at Wimbledon

LONDON: Rafael Nadal was named fifth seed for Wimbledon on Wednesday, leaving his major title rivals to ponder meeting the 2008 and 2010 title-winning Spaniard as early as the quarter-finals. Nadal, the holder of 12 Grand Slam crowns and fresh from his record-breaking eighth French Open triumph in Paris, was seeded behind compatriot David Ferrer who takes the fourth seeding. Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer take the top three places. Wimbledon uses recent grasscourt performances as well as the world rankings to seed players and Nadal was not promoted after he suffered a stunning second-round defeat to Lukas Rosol at the tournament in 2012.

Bangladesh may lose ICC membership, warns BCB chief

DHAKA: Bangladesh might lose its ICC membership if the cricket board here doesn't hold its election according to the ICC's guideline, BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said. In order to minimise government interference and ensure that board chiefs are elected properly, the ICC had reportedly come up with some guidelines and accordingly the BCB directors had amended its' constitution on March 1, 2012.

the mat as they had reduced them to 80 for 8 at one stage and Proteas owed their recovery to some gritty batting by David Miller (56), who in the company of tail-ender Rory Kleinveldt (43) added 95 runs for the ninth wicket in 16 overs. James Anderson (2/14) and Steven Finn (1/45) excelled with the two new balls and were duly complemented by Stuart Broad (3/50) and off-spinner James Tredwell, (3/19). England lost their openers early but Jonathan Trott (82 not out) and Joe Root (48) batted with clam and assurance to lead the hosts to the finish line. They shared a 105-run stand for the third wicket. Trott paced innings well as he batted cautiously initially and started playing strokes once it was sure that England had reached a safe position. It is second time that England have qualified for the Champions Trophy final. The last time they featured in the final was in 2004. That time also they had hosted the event and ended runners-up to the West Indies. England will now play the winner of tomorrow's semifinal between World Champions India and Sri Lanka in the summit clash on June 23 at Birmingham. South African bowlers did a decent job, specially spinner Robin Peterson, but England had the luxury of wickets with a small target at hand. Proteas removed openers Alastair Cook (6) and Ian Bell (20) early but Trott and Root did not allow South African to seize the momentum. They batted with a lot of responsibility as they waited for loose deliveries. Trott's knock came off 84 balls with 11 boundaries while Root helped himself with seven shots to the fence in his 71-ball knock. By the time Root JP Duminy dismissed Root, England were inches from the win. Earlier, South Africa scripted a

Brief Scores: South Africa 175 all out in 38.4 overs [David Miller 56, Rory Kleinveldt 43, James Anderson 2/14, James Tredwell 3/19] lost to England 179 for three in 37.3 overs [Jonathon Trott not out 82, Joe Root 48] by seven wickets.

Confident India take on resurgent Sri Lanka in CT semis C

ARDIFF: Unbeaten so far, a confident India would be up against a massive challenge when they take on sub-continental rivals Sri Lanka, a team on the ascendancy after a slow start, in the semifinal match of the ICC Champions Trophy here today. India will be the fancied team on paper but the Lankans are also on a high after defeating both England and Australia en route to the semifinal, which would be a repeat of the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai. While India were the first team to make the last four from the tournament's Group of Death with an all-win record, Sri Lanka grabbed the last semifinal berth on Tuesday after warding off a late challenge from Australia. The 20-run win against the Aussies at The Oval enabled the Lankans to finish level on points with England, but an inferior runrate pushed them to No. 2 and earned them a date with India at

the Sophia Gardens. For the Lankans, the clash against India will be a grudge game of sorts. In the final of the 2011 World Cup at the Wankhede, India outclassed the co-hosts by six wickets, easily chasing down a 275-run target, with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni laying the coup de grace with a towering six off Nuwan Kulasekara. While Sri Lanka have retained the core of that 2011 World Cup Kumar Sangakkara-led squad here at the Champions Trophy, the Indian team has seen an influx of new blood after Sandeep Patil replaced Krishnamachari Srikkanth as chief selector in September 2012. Only Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina are the remnants of the victorious World Cup squad and the arrival of a set of precocious youths like Ravindra Jadeja and Shikhar Dhawan has had a telling impact on the overall team

performance, especially fielding. The Indians have been on song ever since landing in the UK for the Champions Trophy. The Lankans were the first to face the heat, losing a warm-up game in Birmingham on June 1. India flexed their batting muscle, easily chasing down a 334-run target with five wickets in hand and six balls to spare. Kohli and Dinesh Karthik scored hundreds, virtually toying with a mature Lankan attack, spearheaded by Kulasekara and current skipper Angelo Mathews. India's batting domination has been eloquently clear in this competition. They have scored over 300 runs thrice in five matches, twice batting first. Against the West Indies in a group B fixture, India easily chased down a 234-run target with eight wickets in hand and in a rain-hit game at Edgbaston, dismissed an off-colour Pakistan by an identical margin (D/L method).
