When the rains stopped, they ventured out of the hotel and started moving towards Haridwar, walking for a whole day. On the way they found many roads destroyed and unfit for walking. However, personnel from the Border Road Development Organisation (BRDO) managed to make them functional and after crossing two small hills they reached a local market from where they took a bus which took them to Haridwar safely. Recalling the horrific scenes, Chhaya said whatever damages the government is

he Thane Municipal Corporation’s Assistant Commissioner Chhaya Mankar (54) and her husband Prakash (62) are among those pilgrims who are thanking god as well as their luck just because they are alive. But they are also cursing themselves as they had no chance of extending a helping hand to those in distress. The Mankars, who embarked on the Char Dham yatra on June 10 returned home safely from Uttar Kashi on Monday morning by the August Kranti Rajdhani Express after being stuck for 5 days in Uttarakhand. A group of around 40, most of them senior citizens, some approaching 70 years of age, had gone on the pilgrimage. The journey was organised by Kesari Tours. However, the day they were about to visit Kedarnath temple, the cloudburst occurred, blocking all roads to the temple. This is actually what saved them! Chhaya Mankar said, “I thank Kedarnath bhagwan as he saved our lives in time otherwise all of us would be dead now. We couldn’t visit Kedar-

Kamlesh Pardeshi nath temple because of this tragedy but this also I feel was of god. Despite being stuck for five days, we didn’t face the level of difficulties which others who were nearer the Kedarnath temple did. We were in the Hari Om hotel where we at least had the option of food. And as the hotel was situated on a hill and far from the Alakhnanda river, we were safe.” She says she saw many buildings collapsing into the dangerously swollen Âlakhnanda river and many vehicles and houses being swept away.

who go on these pilgrimages must do so in groups in order to fight off such situations! No help from state government... Another victim Kamlesh Pardeshi (30), a resident of Khadakpada in Kalyan who came on Monday mornimg by air, said that he was stuck for over 36 hours in a bus along with more than 30 pilgrims in which the majority were senior citizen. Pardeshi said, “Our relatives informed us that the Maharashtra government has deputed some senior officres in Uttarakhand to help people from Maharashtra, but their numbers were either switched off or not being answered.“

100 people from the state have so far been rescued in combined operations, out of the estimated total 2,949 pilgrims reportedly stranded in different parts of Uttarakhand. Two persons, one from Mumbai and another from Raigad district, have lost their lives while 425 remain stranded at Badrinath. and around Badrinath. But all the roads to Badrinath have been totally washed out in the floods and they can only be rescued by army helicopters. The relief operations are underway in full swing and all the agencies involved are trying their level best to rescue stranded people. I hope that all the people from the

state will be rescued within the next two-three days if good weather continued,” said Chavan on his return. Meanwhile, a 30-strong contingent of senior officials from the state, including top civil servants, doctors, transport authorities and revenue department officials, is camping in Dehradun and

Pardeshi recounted that on June 14, all of them took darshan of Kedarnath temple and were returning next morning to Badrinath via bus. Seven kms from their destination, a huge part of a hill fell near the bus and blocked the road. So from 5 am to 6 pm the next day, they were trapped inside the bus as Army personnel said that it is very risky to move ahead. Later they reached Rudraprayag and from there they reached Haridwar and Delhi and after buying air tickets of Rs 12,000 each, they reached Mumbai. Pardeshi said, “Now when I see our group photo at Kedarnath and the present pictures in TV, I start shivering“ Haridwar, where the government has set up two special cells to help the tourists and pilgrims from Maharashtra. Apart from this, the entire staff of Maharashtra Sadan in the capital, led by the resident commissioner there, is co-coordinating the relief measures for the victims. The Maharashtra government has given Rs.10 crore to the Uttarakhand government to cover the expenses for rescuing people from the state. More funds are likely to be garnered from the state for the relief work, a senior government official has pointed out.

Do you think the PM should declare the Uttarakhand disaster as a ‘national calamity’?

Abhijit Bhurte Artist

The PM should declare it as a national calamity so that other nations can join in to help the victims in this region.

Aditya Kesarkar Commercial artist

Once the PM declares it a national calamity, there will be more rescue and help from other countries too.

Akhil Bhanushali Choreographer

It should be declared a national calamity so that more nations join hands and ensure quick relief in the ongoing situation.

I think the government should act swiftly and declare it as a national calamity.

The last 20 metres was a cheeky jogging run but the balance remained steady, the body still. He’s a smart man and he takes no unnecessary chances. That is why the seventh generation of Wallendas is still going strong with death just skimming the numbers. He’s a brave man alright and nothing can take away from that.

Let’s hear it for our Army

True grit. When all is said and done, only Nike Wallenda has made it across the Gorge of the Little Colorado River Navajo Tribal Park. For 23 minutes, it was just a man on a very high wire and a strong wind blowing dust into his eyes.

The bravest man in the world!

HE didn’t expect it to be a breeze and in fact, the wind speed Nik Wallenda expected to encounter on his dare-devil stunt across the Grand Canyon yesterday morning was in the neighbourhood of around 30 miles per hour. As it turns out, things were both better and worse than he expected and the quarter-mile walk was completed in 23 minutes, step by slow step, 1,500 feet above the ground without a safety net or harness. If you were among those who woke at 5.30 am to catch the event live on the Discovery Channel or even caught the repeat at 8 pm, you will know what we mean. Sure there will be people who belittle it or seek to play down the significance of the performance. It wasn’t the Grand Canyon at all,

they will say. It was actually the gorge of the Little Colorado River Navajo Tribal Park, on land of the Navajo Nation, near Cameron, Arizona and sort of adjacent to the Grand Canyon National Park where such stunts would never be allowed. The whole time a helicopter hovered around and if he slipped, they would be there in 60 seconds to pick him up. Wallenda himself made it plain that he had already worked out what he would do if he slipped – hold on for dear life, wrap his legs around the cable till help arrived. Anyway, he was in peak shape and fitness, an acrobat, a strategist and above all, a true performer. But early in the morning, watched by a large crowd on both sides of the wire, he looked so tiny, and frail, and alone. He wore a blue T-shirt and jeans, special shoes made by his mother, put the harness around his shoulders to carry the balancing pole, and started out, step by agonizing step. Twive while getting across he seemed to tire and carefully sank

Honestly, if anyone wants to tell Dutt how much they love him, all they have to do is go to Yerawada jail or wherever he is at the moment, repaying his debt to society for the way he took it for granted that he would be allowed to get away with a serious crime. As for us, we will just put him out for our minds for the next three to five years and certainly avoid his films. Not because we think of this move as punishment to him. ulpable homicide not amounting to murder is made out in this case,” observed Sessions Judge U.B. Hejib while rejecting Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s appeal challenging the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate Court’s order invoking this charge in the 2002 hit-and-run case, and fixed July 19 for the commencement of the retrial in the Sessions Court. One person was killed and four others injured when the Land Cruiser, allegedly driven by Khan, ran into a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in Bandra in the wee hours of September 28, 2002. While dictating the order in the open court, Judge Hejib ruled that Salman would face the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This means that the actor might be awarded ten years imprisonment, if convicted by the Sessions court, which will try the case. Salman was earlier tried by a magistrate under the lesser charge of causing death by negligence (Section 304 A of

Salman Khan IPC), which provides for a maximum punishment of two years in jail. However, in a twist to the case, the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, had brought forth the more serious charge of culpable homicide against the 47year-old actor and transferred it to a sessions court for re-trial. While arguing against invoking the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (section 304 part II IPC), his counsel, Ashok Mundargi, pleaded that the Magistrate’s order was “erroneous, bad in law and con-

05

trary to evidence on record. The Magistrate had failed to appreciate that the actor had neither the intention to kill people, nor the knowledge that his rash and negligent driving would kill a person and cause injury to four others.” Public Prosecutor Shankar Erande, while opposing Salman’s appeal, said the Magistrate had rightly invoked the charge of culpable homicide as he had committed a serious offence. “It should be noted that a prosecution witness, Ravindra Patil, who is now deceased, a police bodyguard deployed for the Salman’s security, was accompanying him at the time of the accident and he had warned him not to drive rashly as it could lead to an accident. However, Salman still did not pay heed to this advice and drove the vehicle at a high speed. Salman was drunk and his blood sample revealed that he had 60 mg alcohol in his blood which was beyond the permissible limit and he was fully aware that people sleep on the footpaths in that locality,” the Public Prosecutor said. philip.varghese@afternoondc.in

SET UPSETS! Continued from pg 1 « marks were 35+35+60. It was the first time that the SET exams were conducted along the lines of the NET exams, having multiple choice questions. On Sunday, applicants were shocked to know that the SET had declared a new qualifying criterion which stipulated various cut off percentages for each subject. Jyoti Singh, a candidate who had appeared for the exams, said, “According to the rules, I had cleared the exams. But then all of a sudden, the organization declared a new qualifying criterion along with the results. It has destroyed our hard work. They should have announced the new qualifying criteria much before the examinations, rather than declaring it along with the results, leaving us with no opportunity to tackle the papers with the new criteria in mind!” A similar situation had arisen with the National Eli-

gibility Test (NET), with the UGC similarly declaring new qualifying criteria all of a sudden, due to which lakhs of students failed. A petition was filed by a group of students against the new rule and the Supreme Court passed a judgment asking the UGC to qualify the students according to the old qualifying criteria and implement the new rule well before conducting the next examinations. The ADC spoke to Dr Harishchandra, NET/SET coordinator, Mumbai Division, who said, “The UGC has declared the SET results on the basis of the criterion followed for the NET exams. The declaration has been done on the bases of percentiles for each subject. The top 15 per cent from each subject have qualified for gaining the lectureship.” When asked about the notification of the cut off lists, he said “The UGC might have not displayed the new cut off criterion for the examinations, but it is a declaration of the UGC, which heads the examinations, and will have to be followed from now onwards.”

For falsely implicating innocent Muslim youth in the Malegaon blasts; list includes former Superintendent of Police

Sayyed Ameen Mustafa, along with supporters, displaying the list of police officers to mediapersons, on Monday. cate Ejaz Naqvi said, “We are just here to expose how the theories put forth by the NIA and ATS have big discrepancies, and also how over 150 victims of the Malegaon blast are still waiting for justice.” In its report, the ATS claimed that the RDX was from Pakistan and was left over from the serial train blasts which took place in Mumbai on July 11, 2006, while the NIA is still silent over the issue. The ATS report also states that it was Muslim youth who carried out the blasts and confessed to the attacks, while NIA, in

its report, states that the confessions were made under duress and the blasts were carried out by Hindu terror operatives. After the blast in Malegaon, the ATS had arrested nine Muslim youth for planting the bombs and charged them for attempt to murder while also invoking the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). While seven of the nine men were released on bail after serving over five years in prison, two are still incarcerated as they have also been accused in the

7/11 Mumbai local train blasts. In its chargesheet, the NIA also said that its investigations indicated the entire conspiracy was hatched and carried out by Hindu terror operatives. Kanojiya, who hailed from Nagpur, suffered head injuries and died on the spot. According to Senior Police Inspector Kadam from Kherwadi Police station, the driver, Pradip Kumar Yadav also suffered major injuries on his hand when the van crashed to its side after it dashed into the road divider. Eyewitnesses said that due to heavy oil spill, not only the OB van, but several auto-rickshaws and motor bikes had also skidded at the spot. Traffic came to a halt for some after the accident. National calamity: Uncertain, scary scenario T

HERE appears to be a great deal of uncertainty about the tragic flood-hit scenario in Uttarakhand: Different figures are being given with regard to the number of deaths, the total number of persons who have been rescued and who are still stranded. There are reports that more than 80,000 persons have been affected and that only 15,000 are now awaiting to be located and evacuated. The number of death is variously given 1,000, 5,000 and even more than this. There are reports that people are dying because of hunger. Those who have gone up the hills to avoid the swirling flood waters are facing danger from wild animals. Nearly 6,000 soldiers are involved in rescue work. It looks like all the choppers of the air force are being used to fly out people in distress. A big problem is lack of food. Some food packets are being brought by choppers and are also dropped, but there are 6,000 soldiers and other rescue workers who are also to be fed. There are victims who have not had food for the last one week. Weather at Uttarakhand continues to be bad. There have been heavy showers and many a chopper had to return to base due to bad weather. What is unfortunate is some political parties are engaged in blame games. They should wait till the rescue work is over: till then, there should be combined effort to deal with the worst ever national calamity.

NDIA should never forget certain days in its history. One of them is June 26 when the Emergency was imposed late at night 38 years ago. Lights of personal freedom were switched off and the nation was left to grope in the darkness of dictatorship. The Constitution was suspended, the press gagged and liberty stamped out. The government became an illegal authority to harass, harm, detain and whatever went with it to silence critics. All this happened because the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, was unseated from Parliament for a poll offence and disqualified for five years. She could have appealed against what is popularly known as the Allahabad High Court judgment to the Supreme Court. But she preferred to change the system itself and appropriated power to introduce her personal rule. A democratic country embracing dictatorship came as a shock to the liberal world. For the people in India, it was unbelievable after having enjoyed a constitutional polity for almost three decades. One remark by a close associate of Mrs. Gandhi was poignant: “I can take care of enemies but what do I tell our friends?” Mrs. Gandhi had no explanation to offer except to rule more ruthlessly through her son Sanjay Gandhi who had become an extra-constitutional authority. The Emergency lasted for nearly two years. Fortunately, elections threw out the mother and the son lock, stock and barrel for democracy to return.

position of the Emergency. The only one who did not toe the line was Justice H.R. Khanna. He was superseded when Mrs. Gandhi appointed the Chief Justice of India. If the judiciary still looks battered, it is because it has not yet recovered from the blows it received during those dark days. Mrs. Gandhi’s father, Jawaharlal Nehru, was entirely different. He opted for the democratic republic after Independence and saw to its growth. Take the example of the judiciary. Once he thought of superseding Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan because of his ‘views’. Nehru had to give in when he found the en-

can detain people without trial in an open court of law. Such cases have to be okayed by the government-appointed advisory committee and the trial had to be held within the jail itself. Dr Vinayak Sen, the famous doctoractivist, was first detained under this act. Subsequently, the BJP-ruled Jharkhand government charged him with sedition for having “contacts” with the Maoists. I often wonder why we haven’t learnt a lesson from the emergency and why the rulers of different political parties pursue more or less the same path that Mrs. Gandhi had taken to derail democracy. I believe the reason is that nobody, who was found guilty of committing excesses, was punished. It is comical that some of those found guilty are today at the helm of affairs in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s rule.

Mrs. Gandhi set baneful precedents

The failings of Mrs. Gandhi’s successor government of the Janata Party brought her back to power in less than two years. As the Prime Minister, she not only shelved cases requiring punishment but also appointed the same tainted officers to ensure that the spirit of emergency stayed even if it had not been imposed. The loss of democracy has been more or less forgotten. The youth does not know what the country went through. The elders who recall the period sound too wishy-washy. It was a bad dream which was meant to be forgotten. But when today the steps taken during the emergency have been adopted in the name of security and peace, there seems little difference between now and then. There has to be accountability without which none in power will be afraid of using authority that he or she likes. The Lokpal Bill, under discussion, is necessary to find out who are guilty and how they can be punished. The government’s attitude is uncompromising. If the Lokpal cannot look into the charges against the Prime Minister, the judiciary, or the MPs indulging in corruption even on the floor of the House, what is the use of having such an institution? The control by the government of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) makes any action by the agency meaningless. It looks as if we are in for anxious days. Thank God, another emergency cannot be imposed because the very measure requires a two-thirds majority in Parliament and a similar strength in state assemblies.

‘Meditation is a jump’ Y

OU can never go beyond the mind if you go on using it. You have to take a jump, and meditation mean that jump. That's why meditation is illogical, irrational. And it cannot be made logical; it cannot be reduced to reason. You have to experience it. If you experience, only then do you know. So try this: don't think about it, try -- try to be a witness to your own thoughts. Sit down, relaxed, close your eyes, let your thoughts run just like pictures run on a screen. See them, look at them, make them your objects. One thought arises: look at it deeply. don't think about it, just look at it. If you begin to think about it then you are not a witness -- you have fallen in a trap. There is a horn outside; a thought arises, some car is passing; or a dog barks, or something happens. Don't think about it; just look at the thought. The thought has arisen, taken form. Now it is before you. Soon it will pass. Another thought will replace it. Go on looking at this thought process. Even for a single moment, if you are capable of looking

at this thought process without thinking about it, you will have gained something in witnessing and you will have known something in witnessing. This is a taste, a different taste than thinking - totally different. But one has to experiment with it. Religion and science are poles apart, but in one thing they are similar and their emphasis is the same: science depends on experiment, and religion also. Only

MATTER & SPIRIT philosophy depends just on thinking. Religion and science both depend on experiment: science on objects, religion on subjectivity. Science depends on experimenting with other things than you, and religion depends on experimenting directly with you. It is difficult, because in science the experimenter is there, the experiment is there and the object to be experimented upon is there. There are three things: the object, the

subject and the experiment. In religion you are all the three simultaneously. You are the experiment upon yourself. You are the subject and you are the object and you are the lab. Don't go on thinking. Begin, start somewhere, to experiment. Then you will have a direct feeling of what thinking is and what witnessing is. And then you will come to know that you cannot do both simultaneously, just as you cannot run and sit simultaneously. If you run, then you cannot sit, then you are not sitting. And if you are sitting, then you cannot run. But sitting is not a function of the legs. Running is a function of legs. Rather, sitting is non-function of the legs. When the legs are functioning, then you are not sitting. Sitting is a non-function of the legs: running is the function. The same is with the mind: thinking is a function of the mind; witnessing is a nonfunction of the mind. When the mind is not functioning, you have the witnessing, then you have the awareness. — Osho

Narendra Modi’s Uttarakhand rescue act commendable! IT was very poignant and heartrending to read the editorial ‘Continuing Desperate Situation in Uttarakhand’ (ADC, June 22). At a time when a tragedy of immense proportion has hit Uttarakhand and on the eighth day about 22,000 pilgrims/ tourists are still stranded in Badrinath and surrounding areas, political parties Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party are sparring with each other as to who should and who should not do what in organising aid for the stranded. Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat deserves to be congratulated for his efforts in rescuing about 15,000 pilgrims of Gujarat from the hilly inaccessible areas of Badrinath and nearby places. Instead of all political parties remaining united to tackle the tragedy that has fallen on the people of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, there are debates as to whether the calamity should be declared a National Calamity and who of the VIPs should tour the affected areas and land for helping the stranded in their hour of grief. This shows India in a poor light in the world community. — Apurva Parekh, Juhu

Dilapidated buildings IT has been observed that year 2013 has become disastrous for many middle-aged buildings in Mumbai which are collapsing one after the other, killing innocent occupants with frightening regularity. None of the buildings have done structural audits, il- LETTER OF THE DAY legal aterations have been made by residents, fights between owners and the tenants or a corrupt system where wrong-doers often win, have anything to do with nature and which proves that all these incidents are man-made disasters and both the government agencies and the individuals would do well to learn the lesson from these incidents as the old buildings do not wait for the structural audits or stakeholders to make up their mind about the redevelopment but they just collapse and make the people homeless without any help from the authorities. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

DILAPIDATED buildings cause worry for inmates and the building collapse is one such tragedy killing many people. BMC has issued Public Notices through various news dailies asking the inmates to evacuate the buildings and look for alternative accommodation. UTTRAKHAND tragedy has benumbed the nation and tales of people suffering the aftermath of the Himalayan tsunami is heartwrenching. In this hour of tragedy, some people are exploiting the

situation to their own greed. Reports emanating that a plate of rice is being sold for Rs.500 and roti is being sold at 120 bucks is criminal. People indulging in such type of profiteering must be hanged in full view of public as an example. People indulging in such acts need no mercy and law should be amended to take care of such things. People have lost their kith and kin and are struggling to strive, instead of helping them on humanitarian grounds these people are exploiting the situation. We remember the fateful deluge of 2005 in Mumbai, Mumbaikars were out in full strength to help people, offering them shelter, food and water. This showed their character. THE propulsion of Narendra Modi as the foreman of the poll campaign committee has caused a lot of flutter within the BJP as well as as without. First it was L.K. Advani who revolted and had to be placated by the RSS and then it was Nitish Kumar of the JD(U) who jilted the BJP to end a 17 year old alliance which is quite a feat considering today’s fickle political structure with parties switching alliances at the drop of a hat. It is quite evident now that the rivals of Modi are chary and wary of him and Nitish, in particular, is feeling that his prime ministerial ambition will be nipped in the bud if Modi is allowed to flower, though I do not see how the act of deserting the BJP would further his interests. The only “front” that the JDU has managed to put up is a “brave front” by deserting not a sinking ship but a very vibrant and buoyant one. — Hemant Hemmady, Virar

THE bold decision taken by BJP in its meeting at Goa on June 9 has set the ball rolling for the 2014 general elections. THE statement of PM that Nitish Kumar is a ‘secularist’ is in bad taste and indicates the bankruptcy of ideology of Congress party, especially, Manmohan Singh himself who is being regarded as an economist-turnedpolitician. Allege corruption in disbursement of ‘handicap’ funds

It should be noted that following state government guidelines, a budgetary allocation of Rs.87 lakh had been made by the civic administration to extend assistance to differently-abled people living in the twin-city. The funds were meant to aid beneficiaries with equipment to physically challenged and also impart entrepreneurship training. However information sourced out under the RTI act, revealed that the social welfare development of the MBMC not only failed to extend help to the needy, but disbursed cheques of Rs.50,000 each to 54 municipal employees ( spending Rs.27 lakh) who have been recruited in the civic body under the physically challenged category. he Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs has seized around seven kilograms of gold worth about Rs.2 crore at the international airport here over the past one week, official sources said. Since yesterday, the Customs have seized 3.6 kilograms of gold which was being smuggled in the

country, they told PTI. In their first incident on Sunday, a Kenyan woman, who landed in the city by Kenyan Airways, was apprehended at 3 am and 600 grams of gold worth Rs.16 lakh was seized from her possession, they said. In an other operation in the evening, the officials seized 3 kgs of

gold worth Rs 80 lakhs from another person. “In India the price of the yellow metal is high. Hence, it is a favourite destination to sell gold with good profit,” a Customs official said adding that fall in the value of rupee was also one of the reasons.

I

n another case of the molestation of minor girls, an accused who was known to the victim and her family, took her out on Sunday on the pretext of showing her the Byculla zoo and molested her while they travelling in a local train. Sayyed Ashraf (26) and his 10year-old victim were known to each other for the last three years as they lived in the same locality in Shivaji Nagar in Govandi. On Sunday evening, he managed to convince her to go along with him to the zoo. When they reached Chinchpokli railway station at around 6.30 pm, the girl started weeping. On seeing this, co-passengers who sensed something amiss, confronted the accused and handed him over to the railway police. The railway constables brought Ashraf and the victim to the Dadar railway station from where they called up the victim’s parents. On

the basis of a complaint by the girl’s mother, the railway police registered a case and booked Ashraf under section 363 of the IPC. He was then sent to Shivaji Nagar police station as he and the victim were residents of Shivaji Nagar. The Shivaji Nagar police sent the girl to Rajawadi Hospital for medical examination, where the doctor’s report revealed that she was not assaulted sexually. But she told the Rajawadi doctor that while travelling in the train, Ashraf had touched her private parts. So a supplementary statement of complaint was recorded and additional IPC section 354 A (1) (stalking) under the new law and under section 7, 8 of Protection of Child from Sexual Offences, was added by the Shivaji Nagar police, while arresting Ashraf. Radheshyam Agarwal, senior PI of Shivaji Nagar police station, said, “The accused was produced in court on Monday and strictest action will be initiated against him.”

emember the days when as children the moment we accidentally gulped in the seeds of a fruit, we were told by our parents (with a cruel sense of humour!) that a tree would soon grow in our stomachs? Well, we eventually grew up, found out that it was a joke and started disposing the seeds before we ate the fruit simply because of their unappetising taste. But, did you know that some seeds are as healthy, if not more, as the fruits that we eat? A seed is what gives birth to a plant. So, imagine the colossal amount of nutrients, vitamins, proteins, minerals and essential oils it must enclose. Seeds can be the healthiest snack items if eaten in the right way. We tell you

CORONARYARTERYDISEASE INYOUNG INDIA

Americans, 6-times more than Chinese,20-times more than Japanese. The prevalence of CAD is two-times higher (10%) in urban than in rural India. There are major differences in CAD in Indians and other countries. Indians are prone to CAD at a much younger age.CAD is affecting Indians 5-10 years earlier than other communities. The disease pattern is severe and diffuse. The CAD among Indians is usually more advanced at the time of presentation compared with whites. The mortality and morbidity from CAD is high in the Indian population with greater social and economic impact of the disease as it affects younger and working population. The poor awareness of risk factors for coronary artery disease such high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, diabetes and inadequate of conventional risk factors of CAD increases incidence of Coronary artery diseases in India. The conventional risk factors namely Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus, Hypertriglyceridaemia with low levels of HDLC, high LDL-C, low levels of antioxidants (vitamin A, E, beta - carotene), lipoprotein-a (Lpa). In addition, there are certain novel and emerging risk factors in young Indians. Central obesity is an independent risk factor for CAD, even modest increase in body fat with central distribution increases the risk further. Because of affluent lifestyle, improved standard of living, sedentary life-style, higher consumption of calories, saturated fats, fried food, junk foods, incidence of central obesity is rapidly rising. MYSTERY OF THE VANISHING SPECTACLES T

here are millions of people in this world for whom the pair of spectacles has become as much a part of their body as their hands or feet. The spectacles are the first thing they reach out for in the morning and the last thing that they put aside when going to bed. They are so dependant on spectacles that they cannot imagine a world without them. But today the advances in ophthalmic technology have made the unthinkable possible ! Yes, today one can practically throw away the spectacles or contact lenses and yet see the world clearly !! To many this is absolutely magical and this magic has been made possible by the technique called Lasik. In simple terms Lasik involves a reshaping of the cornea, the front layer of the eye, so that its refractive power changes to the desired value. Thus the cornea itself does the job earlier done by spectacles .This reshaping is done by a very hi-tech Excimer Laser which is so precise that you can even carve a design on a human hair. However earlier attempts to correct the refractive error the PRK technique- were not fully satisfactory as the recovery period was long and painful and needed prolonged steroid medication . Lasik was introduced to overcome these

LASER TREATMENT OF URINARY STONES AND ENLARGED PROSTATE.

Dr. Hemendra N. Shah, Consultant Urologist Web:www.laserforstoneandprost ate.com

Email ID: drhemendrashah@yahoo.com

Laser treatment has become a boon for patients suffering from urinary stones and prostate diseases. The incidence of urinary stones is rising globally. It is estimated that at least 10% of the population in the industrialized part of the world is afflicted by urinary tract stone disease. Stones can form anywhere in urinary system. They usually cause pain in abdomen, vomiting, burning urination or passage of blood in urine. However 10% patients with kidney stones may not have any symptoms. Similar number of patients may present with kidney failure. Presence of stones is confirmed by sonography, x-ray or CT scan. These investigations

inform us about the exact size and location of stone. This knowledge is critical in deciding the best approach for laser treatment of stones. Stones smaller then 6 mm in size can be usually expelled out with help of medications. Larger stones in kidney can be removed using flexible ureteroscopy. Here a tiny endoscope is passed through normal urinary passage and it reaches different parts of kidney (figure). A fine thread like laser is used through endoscope to powder and remove stones in kidney. On other hand, large stones in kidney can also be successfully removed by endoscopy. Largest kidney stone in world as per Guinness world records measured 13 cm and it was also removed by endoscopy without need for open surgery. The advantages of laser and endoscopy include less bleeding, less pain, less hospital stay, less complications and early return to work. Enlarged prostate is a common urological condition in aging male. The prevalence of urinary symptoms secondary to enlarged prostate increases with age and ranges from 40% by age of 50 years and 80% by age 80 years. As the enlargement progresses, urinary passage (urethra) is squeeze down (figure). This can cause men to have trouble while urinating. A common symptom is the need to frequently empty the bladder, sometimes as often as every one to two hours, especially at night. Other symptoms include the sensation that the bladder is not empty, even after a person is done urinating, or that a patient cannot postpone urination once the urge to urinate arises. Prostate enlargement can cause a weak urinary stream, dribbling of urine, intermittent urinary stream. It can cause trouble while starting urination, often requiring patient to push or strain in order to urinate. Few patients may not be aware of their urinary symptoms or they think it to be normal. Such patients may directly present with complications. This is called as silent prostatism. To rule out cancer as a cause of urinary symptoms, your doctor may recommend a PSA blood test. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a PSA test for use in conjunction with a digital rectal examination to help detect prostate cancer in men who are age 50 or older as a screening modality for early detection of cancer prostate. Medicines are prescribed for relief of urinary symptoms due to enlarge prostate. It is very important for patient to remember that the medications need to be taken

associated with more atherosclerosis. In Indians, the levels of Lp-a are higher than white suggesting a genetic propensity. This difference is also associated with a four-fold higher coronary artery disease. Thus, both established and novel risk factors and a possible genetic predisposition significantly contribute to this epidemic. The effects of these risk factors are multiplicative not just additive. The clustering of risk factors cause multiplicative increase in risk of coronary artery disease. Timely adequate measures are essential to control the risk coronary artery disease in India. What to be done for preventing coronary artery disease??There are simple steps toward controlling this epidemic of CAD and to have healthy life.Various preventive measures can be taken either prior to emergence of risk factors and if risk factors are present, then to control them. There is a need for identifying and correcting the conventional risk factors like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hyperlipidaemia, tobacco consumption, and central obesity at much younger age. Male sex is more prone to CAD but post-menopausal females also constitute a distinct subgroup at a high risk for CAD. Early detection and adequate treatment is essential. The prevalence of DM is about 20% in middle age and even moderate elevation of glucose in Indians is associated with increased risk of CAD.Adequate Control of Diabetes through nutritional therapy and drugs is must. The mean serum cholesterol level in urban Indians in rising. Indians even with lower levels of serum cholesterol have higher risk of CAD.Dyslipidemia can be controlled with good dietary habit and regular exercise. Incorporating daily Exercise and Weight Reduction is a simple measure to remain healthy. Even modest weight decreases the risk significantly. Exercise helps in controlling blood pressure and also improves sugar control in diabetes thus decreasing the risk of coronary artery decrease. Life style modification by stress relaxation, dietary modification, consumption of more fruits and vegetables and avoiding junk and high caloric food is a road to good health. Quitting tobacco and smoking is vital for decreasing the risk of Coronary artery disease. Cessation from smoking decreases the risk of having coronary artery disease by 5 -fold than current smoker. Regular medical check-up and follow up should be done for person who a high risk for coronary artery disease and also those having risk factors. In India, Coronary artery disease was initially considered to be a disease of middle and old age. But in view of changing scenario, it is important to do lifestyle modification at an early age so as to detect the risk factors and coronary artery disease at an early age. By incorporating these simple healthy habits in our life, we can combat with this epidemic of coronary artery disease. At the threshold of the new millennium coronary artery disease (CAD) is looming large as the new epidemic afflicting Indians at a relatively younger age and has become a challenge prevalence of CAD has progressively increased in India during last twenty years.

problems and its hallmarks are speedy recovery with minimal pain and medication. The crucial step in lasik is the lifting of a thin flap of corneal tissue about 90-130 microns thick. This was generally done with a high speed blade called a micro-keratome. Today, however, we have the highly advanced Femto-second Laser which can do this delicate step with greater precision and safety. Thus we are now truly entering the safe and predictable world of Bladeless Lasik. Once the flap is lifted the Excimer Laser does its job of reshaping the corneal bed to the desired curvature and then the flap is replaced back. The treated area is thus fully covered and the minor wound left behind heals overnight hence the speedy recovery. It is as if we fool the eye into believing that nothing has been done and hence there is no vigorous healing response which would have otherwise interfered with the targeted refractive correction. Any person over 18 years of age who has a stable refractive error can be considered for lasik barring a few exceptions such as exceedingly thin or irregular corneas and those with very high refractive error( > -11.0 D or > +6.0 D). Today we even have a special treatment software for those above 40yrs of age so that we can correct the distance as well as the near spectacle power. Although every treatment modality has its own inherent side effects we have not seen anybody lose vision due to Lasik. In the early post treatment period one must be prepared for a small drop in night vision along with appearance of haloes around street lights or car head lights. These complaints cease to bother over a few months. Also there is some dryness after Lasik treatment which also responds to lubricant eye drops used for a few months. Rarely there can be an under or over-correction of the refractive error leading to a residual spectacle power. This can be rectified with an additional treatment, when possible , after 2-3 months. Very rarely there is a possibility that the cornea becomes weak and bulges outwards (ectasia ) An ectatic cornea can be stabilized by a strengthening procedure called Cross linkage. Most of these complications are avoided nowadays due to the stringent selection criteria.

under supervision of urologist for the entire life. Commonest mistake that a patient make is to discontinue medications when he experiences improvement in urination. This causes relapse of symptoms and also increase likelihood of developing complications. The complications of enlarged prostate include urinary retention (inability to pass urine), blood in urine, repeated urinary infections, and development of stones or kidney failure. On development of such complications surgery becomes absolutely necessary. Of various surgical options available for treatment of enlarged prostate, laser removal of prostate is the safest option. Holmium laser prostatectomy can successfully remove prostate of any size with minimal bleeding and tissue damage. It is found to be safe in patients with bleeding tendency, cardiac pacemakers, lung and heart diseases, and on blood thinner medications. With the introduction of holmium laser prostatectomy, open surgery has become a thing of past. Many geriatric patients who were otherwise unfit for surgery due to high surgical risk involved in conventional surgery can now be successfully treated with laser prostatectomy. Authors informationDr Hemendra N. Shah is a consultant urologist He had excellent academic career and received Gold Medal in his urology examination. He had presented more than 50 papers in various national and international conferences and is awarded best papers award at various national and international conferences. Cure Anything Without Medicine With Neurotherapy! Dr Kamlesh Chavan, a practicing Neurothrapist, since 25 years, claims to have treated various patients with terminal diseases like cancer, motor neuron, parkinson etc along her carrier. Neurotherapy is a non medicinal scientific therapy founded by Dr. Lajpatrai Mehra, about 50 years ago, based on ancient vedic and yogic sciences. According to Dr. Chavan, a human body is a complete self sustained machine capable of curing any disorder by producing all sorts of medicines in forms of hormones, enzymes, chemicals, antibodies etc. But sometimes due to the entry of foreign bodies there is an imbalance created which defect the organs. And in such situations we have to consume medicines orally to keep our body in a normal balanced state. But with Neurotherapy, any disorder of our body can be cured without taking any medicines creating a perfectly healthy state. In Neurotherapy pressure is applied on specific points of body by ways of hands and feet. The protocol is dependent on the division of the torso with relative points with the body organs. Such pressure on specific points in turn activates the connected organ and strengthens it to produce its own antidote. In due course the interior of our body becomes so strong that it can itself drive away any viruses and bacterias. There are about 1500 centres practicing Neurotherapy all across the country and few centers in UK, US and Australia. About 25000 patients visit these centers everyday. Treating patients with diabetes, arthritis, parkinson, motor neuron, muscular dystrophy, asthma, multiple sclerosis, autism, cardiovascular issues, neurological issues, psychological disorders etc is a mundane for such centers. Dr Chavan also confirms of transforming a HIV positive patient to HIV negative and having stabilized the immunity to live a normal life for more than 15 years. Mrs Adelia Castelino, an entrepreneur, has been visiting Dr. Chavan for neck pain. She was so impressed by the therapy that she financed a new centre at Andheri. Mrs Castelino even says that every person should experience the benefits of this miraculous therapy once in life. A 9 year old son of Mr Yadav had been suffering from Muscular Dystrophy, which had no cure in allopathy. "I came to Dr. Chavan's centre with my son who could not even turn himself while sleeping. And in just 6 months he is now able to stand on his own feet with some support", says Mr Yadav. Mrs Dhruti More, a 34 year old professional, says," I had ITP when I was 21 years old. My platelets went down to 10000. But with Neurotherapy the platelets came up to 3lacs in just 2 months and till date I live an absolute normal life" Dr Chavan also runs a charitable body in the name 'Vikas Foundation'. This body also runs a training programme offering courses in Neurotherapy. Since last decade the number of people enrolling for these courses and making Neurotherapy their carriers have increased vastly. With a Neurotherapy certificate course one can open a centre anywhere across the country. Many people even go through the training programme just as a form of self aid and some even for a social cause. There are people who think this is some for of accupressure or massage therapy. But according to Dr Chavan though this is a pressure based technique, the csience on which the therapy is based is completely different from any alternative therapy. People from various walks of life are benefited out of Neurotherapy, from celebs to politicians to common man. The Neurotherapists also claim that there is no disorder their research team would not find a cure for.

Fruit Facts Everyone goes on and on about how you should eat vegetables. But, what about fruits? Take this quiz by Priyanka Singh and find out if you know your fruit facts

W

hile most of us are aware about how we should cook and consume vegetables, we don’t really pay attention to how we eat fruits or when are we supposed to eat them. Think you know it all? The following quiz will help you find out how much you actually know about fruits and how many of your beliefs are wrong. 1. You must wash all fruits before you eat them; even the ones you are going to peel. a. True. b. False. 2. Fruits should be eaten after a meal as dessert. a. True. b. False. 3. You should eat fruits preferably on an empty stomach. a. True. b. False. 4. Fruits should be eaten before bedtime. a. True. b. False. 5. You should eat most of your fruits within three days of buying them. a. True. b. False. 6. The best item to eat post a workout is a fruit. a. True. b. False.

CORRECT ANSWERS 1. tRue

You must wash all fruits; even fruits such as bananas, kiwis and mangoes, that you are going to peel and eat. Just think about it — the fruit you’re holding must have passed through dozens of hands before coming to you. Your hands can pick up bacteria present on unwashed skin and transfer it onto the part you eat. Also, while peeling, if you haven’t washed it, the knife or your hands are obviously going to touch the inside parts while slicing the skin of the fruit. So, always wash all the fruits before consuming them.

2. false

Fruits should never be eaten as dessert. If you eat a fruit after a large meal, they get stored in your stomach for a long time causing them to rot and ferment in your gut. If you had a fruit after a meal and experience heartburn, acidity, indigestion and excessive burping, the reason is not just the meal that you have eaten, but also the fermented fruit that is combining with the food in your stomach causing stomach and digestion issues. If you continue this eating pattern for a long time, it can

result in health problems of the digestive tract.

3. tRue

When a fruit is eaten on an empty stomach in the morning, your digestive process works faster to digest it. The simple sugars present in fruits take a longer time to digest. As your stomach is empty, it has nothing else to work on, but just the fruit and so, it uses all its enzymes on the task. As mentioned in the previous point, if you combine it with other food, the fruits begin to rot. When fruits are eaten alone, your stomach can easily process all of the nutrients, fibre and the simple sugars present in the fruit. This is the optimal and proper way to benefit from the fruit you eat. If you can’t eat them in the morning, make sure that you have a one hour gap after your meal before you eat a fruit.

4. false

Never eat a fruit before bedtime. And the reason is not just because you might suffer from indigestion and bloated stomach (if you have eaten it right after your meal); it also causes restless sleep.

Eating fruit just before bedtime will mean that the sugar content of the fruit will spike up your energy levels and will prevent you from sleeping.

5. tRue

Most ripe fruits have a shelf life of three days if you have stored them in a refrigerator. You should avoid eating overripe fruits because most of them lose many of their crucial nutrients when they get overripe. Apart from that, they also don’t taste good. Some of the exceptions are apples (can be eaten up to a week), pears (up to six days) and papayas and chickoos (up to two days).

6. tRue

Fruit is the ideal food for exercise. The best post workout snacks are not muffins, yogurt or protein shakes, but fresh fruit. Athletes have long known that there is nothing better than a sweet fruit that has high water content such as oranges or melons, after a workout. They contain enough water to hydrate the body and their natural sugars are quickly utilised for energy production.

For lunch, I opt for something that will give me fibre.” She also tells us that her overall diet involves making smart choices. For example, if she is eating out, she would choose Subway over a McDonald’s burger. ince nutritionists are considered to be experts, it rarely crosses our minds that what they preach is what they follow in real life. You might complain about the strict diet plan that your nutritionist has drawn up for you, but did you know that they follow these diets too? That’s why we spoke to a few nutritionists in the city and asked them what their daily diet is like. While all of them eat different foods, they all have one thing in common — they all eat dinner as early as possible; by around 7.30 or 8pm.

Breakfast: Cereal or Indian snacks, such as poha or upma. I also have a cup of green tea. mid-morning: I snack on a small fruit such as an orange or a small portion of a big fruit. lunch: Lunch is mostly rice along with dal or curry. I also have a salad. Sometimes, I eat a chapatti along with a vegetable dish instead of rice and dal. Evening: Usually sukha bhel along with a cup of tea. Sometimes, I eat boiled corn instead of bhel. I avoid fried foods. dinner: Dinner is the same as lunch. However, once or twice a week I enjoy non-vegetarian dishes such as lean chicken or fish.

manik PandE, TalwalkaRs FiTnEss Manik is a vegetarian who loves to try new foods. She also likes experimenting in the kitchen, which results in dishes such as pasta made from whole-wheat grain. She tells us, “One motto that I follow is compensating. If I ever indulge myself and have unhealthy foods, I always ensure that I make up for it.” This is her daily diet: Early morning: One cup of coffee (½ milk, ½ water and ½ tsp sugar) Breakfast: Muesli and milk (without sugar). mid-morning: A glass of buttermilk or a seasonal fruit. lunch: Two phulkas with a vegetable dish. « KNOW MORE: HEALTHY, PACKAGED FOOD Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why when you need to cook in a hurry, new food venture Heat2Eat is good a option to try out We were really excited to try Heat2Eat, a packed food concept by Pankti Chheda. When we met her, she explained that the idea came up as she missed homemade food when she went abroad to study. Eating out every day is expensive and as a student (or for that matter, busy at work like most of us here) you don’t have time to make elaborate meals for yourself. Pre-packaged food has been around for ages, but don’t write this off just yet. While all the other ready-to-eat options come packed with preservatives and simply satisfy taste value, Pankti promises that Heat2Eat is filled with nutrition and is healthy. The idea sprung up after her mother sent her the little packets (without the colourful tag of course) and the

tried and tested food items became a big hit. What we love most about the packaging is that it helps keep the food from spoiling for up to five months! We got down to preparing the food, but cooking it wasn’t as easy as we had hoped. The dehydrated and hygienically packed packets do take a while to prepare perfectly, but they’re so well priced (not more than `180 for the most expensive meal and enough for two small meals or one extremely filling one) that we’d buy them again. We’d prefer if we could just pop them in the microwave and get delicious meals in a second, but we can’t complain too much about the 2-8 minutes with added water that it takes to make them on the stove. Most of their meals can be made in the

microwave too, but we recommend that you cook them on the stove, as it’s easier to avoid overcooking the food on the stove. We tried their Poha (`45), Dal Fry (`80), Paav Bhaji (`180) and Mexican Rice (`60). The Paav Bhaji had a little too much garam masala, as did the Dal Fry, but those who like heavy masala in their food will love it. The poha was excellent and the Mexican Rice, although there wasn’t anything Mexican about it, tasted good enough for lunch. We also had their Sheera (`60) for dessert and it was delicious. At the end of the day, it’s fresh, healthy food that’s ready in a jiffy. What’s not to like? Order by logging on to www.heat2eat.in or by calling 9820865453 or 9820579350

« KNOW MORE: FEAR OF MISSING OUT (FOMO) Worried the party will get better the moment you leave the room? You may be suffering from fear of missing out, says Rhea Dhanbhoora Are you always the last one out of the club? Do you hate it when your friends meet up without you? Do you get worried when someone else at work gets recognition and praise instead of you? If you measure success and happiness by the amount of retweets on your Twitter account and friend requests on your Facebook profile and you can’t step out of the bustle of life, even for a vacation, you need to sit up and pay attention as we answer some of the questions probably swimming in your head about this social anxiety disorder.

is Fomo real?

While the term was coined by Kelley J. Watson and Diane E. Meyer in 1985, FOMO probably existed a long time before it was defined. It’s a social anxiety disorder that is quite the opposite of most social disorders we know of. Instead of feeling anxious and withdrawing from society, people who suffer from FOMO are always smack in the midst of it. How do you know if you have it? Easy. Do you often double book because you can’t say no to anyone? Do you stress yourself out trying to fit everyone and everything into your schedule, because if you’re not at a particular party or miss a day of work, you think you’ll miss out on things? It’s no secret my friend, you’re being affected by FOMO.

is it Common?

Earlier, FOMO reared its clingy head in social settings and at work. But, with our recent dependency on all things internet related, it’s slowly made its way into our homes. Can’t sleep till you check your Facebook messages? Need your phone near you at all times in case you get a message or call? It’s all continuously contributing to the fear that if you take a break from connectivity for a moment, you’ll miss out on something and lag behind.

Can i help myselF?

You know you can’t control it if you can’t step out of your life. Try taking a weekend off; disconnect from everything and just relax. If your mind keeps wandering back to everything you’re supposed to be doing and you can’t relax, you may need to talk to someone about it. Avoid group therapy, or discussing it with a group of friends. This is one thing you really need to be alone to solve!

Markets Slump

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Tuesday (June 25, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

PEVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Monday (June 24, 2013) a net 77.40 points (1.37%) and closed at the 5590 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 5638 points level. It then rose by a few points and registered the day’s high at the 5640 points level at 9.27 a.m. The index then declined sharply and turned into a range bound movement until 2.15 p.m. It then declined further and registered the day’s low at the 5566 points level at 2.42 p.m. The index then rose and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty remained below its previous close throughout the session, moved in a range of 74 points and closed a tad below the psychologically important 5600 points level. Sentiment was extremely bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 39 were losers, while 11 were gainers. All the sectoral indices closed in the red. Heavy selling was seen in realty, consumer durables and capital goods stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 14.75%. This change is moderate and indicates a moderate participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 256 were gainers, 1135 were losers and 62 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the over-sold zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 30 level but is now declining (negative if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero and is now declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is below the –DI line and both lines are diverging (negative if it continues). The ADX is rising while the Market Index is falling, which indicates that the present down trend is increasing in strength.

Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support at the 5610 points level was crossed below yesterday. The next support is at the 5478 points level.

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 5814 points level. The next resistance is at the 5965 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 5599 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 5558; Support (2) = 5525; Resistance (1) = 5631; Resistance (2) = 5673. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst investors) has formed a black body candle. The body of this candle is below and outside the body of the previous candle. This is negative and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the sell side of the market. Further, the index has crossed below a major support level at the 5610 points level. Moreover, the 15 day’s moving average has crossed below the 200 day’s moving average. The index continues to remain below the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day’s moving averages, while the 5, 15 and 25 day’s moving averages are declining and also negatively trended. The velocity parameters too indicate weakness. All these indicate a negative bias and the possibility of a further decline unfolding. Investors are advised to avoid buying at present levels.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 5709) Negative. Is below its 15-day average (at 5798) Negative. Is below its 25-day average (at 5899) Negative. Is below its 200-day average (at 5813) Negative.

Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a weak market with a negative bias.

As per our recent interaction with ASBL’s management, order progress in the roads sector remains sluggish and is likely to be back-ended this year. In our view, the recent decision by government to allow exit mechanisms for road developers (by introduction of substitute developers) from projects will alleviate the bleak scenario in road sector. We remain positive on ASBL given healthy revenue visibility across key projects in the next 12- 24 months and a well-capitalised balance sheet. Reiterate BUY. Strong order book visibility: ASBL’s current order book stands at Rs 26bn (or 1.7x FY13 sales), excluding the Rs 10bn Cuttack–Angul project. The Chennai ORR and Karnataka State Highways Improvement projects are expected to add another Rs 0.8bn to the order book, and management expects to win a further Rs 1.5bn in orders over the next two quarters. Valuation: We like ASBL for its (1) well-capitalised balance sheet supplemented by funds from SBI Macquarie, (2) revenue visibility across key projects in the next 12- 24 months, and (3) timely project execution. Reiterate BUY with a March’14 SOTP value of Rs 300 based on project NPV.

Dolat Capital calls a ‘Buy’ on HDFC Bank CMP: Rs. 625 Target Rs. 720

We recently met with the management of HDFC Bank where they believe that the bank should continue deliver stable operating performance with stable asset quality and NIM. Some of the newer areas of business like gold loans is also doing well and should continue seeing higher than average growth with low defaults. Following are the key highlights of the meeting: Loan growth: Loan growth should be maintained at 5% above the industry average; driven by working capital & short term loans, business banking, mortgage and personal loans. While the bank has witnessed some off-take in the project loan segment, given the current economic scenario, loan demand continues to be largely working capital focused. Valuation: We believe the bank should be able to maintain the 22- 25% balance sheet growth over the next two years with stable NIM and asset quality. We believe that the bank should continue to deliver average ROE of 22% and command premium valuations as it maintains its growth and asset quality, despite the competition and macro challenges. Stock price has corrected by more than 10% during the past month with PBR valuation at 3.5x FY14 BVPS. We maintain our Accumulate rating on the stock with target price of Rs 720, based on PBR of 4x on our FY14 BVPS forecasts.

Sunidhi calls a ‘Buy’ on Balkrishna Ind CMP: Rs. 219 Target Rs. 320

Valuation & Recommendation: BIL’s products are well established in the international market and it expects to further improve its performance in the export segment. BIL continues to expand its base through developing new product lines, venturing into new geographies and deeper penetration into existing markets. BIL’s labour costs are nearly one-fifth of the costs incurred by global players. Labour accounts for nearly 4% of the total costs for the company. Besides, the off highway tyre segment is a high variety, low volume business, which requires a good distribution network for growth, which BIL has in the kitty. BIL has strong global network comprising 200 distributors across 120 countries catering to the replacement market. Unlike tyre manufacturers focused on the domestic markets, BKT enjoys much higher margins. BKT derives 80% revenue from the replacement market wherein margins are 3 5% higher than OEMs. The advantage comes from its focus on exports, where margins are higher than domestic sales. This apart, BKT caters to the tyre replacement markets abroad, which again gives them more pricing power. Besides, these exports act as a natural shield against any escalation in import prices of raw materials such as natural rubber and other crude oil derivatives. A softening of rubber prices may help margins move up further. The expansion will help BIL to grow at 30% p.a. compared to industry growth of 5-6%, thereby enhancing its market share (from 5.0% to 10% by FY15E). BIL will introduce three specialty tires in July 2013. The Off Highway Tire (OHT) additions will target popular applications for high-speed crane, port, construction and mining machinery. At the current market price of Rs 230, the share is trading at a P/E of 6.3x on FY13E and 6.1x on FY14E. We recommend BUY with a target price of Rs 320 in the medium term. Mahindra Finance Not To Apply For Bank License By A Business Reporter

C

iting that the guidelines issued by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) don’t provide any flexibility for NBFC and bank to co-exist for a reasonable period of time, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Limited (Mahindra Finance), part of the US $16.2 billion Mahindra Group has decided not to apply for bank license. According to the statement issued by the company, the Board of Directors at its Board Meeting yesterday has decided not to proceed with the application for a Banking License, after reviewing the implications of the present guidelines issued by RBI for such an application, along with the clarifications issued by RBI on 3 June 2013. “The Board expressed full confidence in Mahindra Finance’s plans and prospects for growth as an independent NBFC,”

read the statement. Mahindra Finance is a pioneer NBFC in India, and has been successfully serving 2.5 million customers for over two decades helping to achieve financial inclusion in around 1,70,000 villages. The RBI guidelines provide for the conversion of Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) into a Bank, but do not provide any flexibility for a NBFC and a Bank to co-exist for a reasonable period of time. As per the clarification issued by the RBI the regulations provide that CRR and SLR will be applicable from inception, even though building of CASA will take some time for a newly converted bank. This anomaly, unfortunately, will impose an undue penalty on large, successful asset finance NBFCs with a pan-India network, that wish to convert into a Bank, as compared to small NBFCs

with a limited network. “The current set of guidelines, as clarified, has an adverse economic and operational impact on the business of larger NBFCs,” said the company. “A time bound co-existence of a NBFC and a Bank in the same group would help set up a sustainable model and address the concerns of all stake holders, including the customer base both current and future,” it said. However , the board has kept the option open by saying that Should the guidelines be amended, to permit co-existence of NBFC and a Bank in the same group, or should these concerns be addressed in any other manner, the company will be happy to apply for a Banking License.” In the meanwhile, RBI has kept the deadline for application of banking license in the private sector till 1 July 2013.

With an aim to encourage entrepreneurship in the country by financing small start-ups, market regulator Sebi plans to bring in new norms for angel investors, who provide funding to companies at their initial stages. According to proposals being considered by Sebi, angel investors can be allowed to be registered as Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) — a newly created class of pooled-in investment vehicles for real estate, private equity and hedge funds, a senior official said. In order to ensure investment by angel funds is ‘genuine’, Sebi plans to restrict investment by such funds between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 5 crore. — Business Desk with inputs from PTI.

Veteran CIA operative Marty tells Miller that there are no weapons, it is a deception to allow the Americans to take over the country and install a puppet leader. Also suspicious of Poundstone is Wall Street Journal reporter Lawrie Dayne, who lets slip to Miller that Poundstone told her he had secret talks in Jordan with an important Iraqi, code-named Magellan, who told him about the weapons, though it now seems likely Magellan’s true information was to the contrary. UBURBAN Music Circle had organised a concert featuring Bhuvanesh Komkali, grandson of the late Kumar Gandharva, noted Hindustani classical singer. Born as Shivputra Sidramayya Komkali, Kumar was the first professional singer in his family. He earned the epithet 'Kumar Gandharva' (child minstrel) at the age of 10, when he began to reproduce the music of earlier maestros like Faiyaz Khan, Abdul Karim Khan and Sunderabai. Kumar Gandharva's progeny, however, is full of musicians. His wife Vasundhara, now 85, has had a good career. His son, Mukul Shivputra, is acknowledged to be a wayward genius. His daughter Kalapini Komkali has made a name for herself for her singing style which is similar to that of her father. And his grandson Bhuvanesh is now a leading singer of the young generation. Bhuvanesh, 35, looks up to his grandfather as a role model. Kumar Gandharva's enunciation of the musical note used to be full of emotional intensity and Bhuvanesh has seemed to have inherited this trait and technique. "I have heard him a lot during my formative years. Naturally, you will find his reflection in my music," he said. Bhuvanesh has trained not only with Vasundhara, his grandmother, but also with Delhi-based singer

Set to the ten beat jhaap taal it depicts the various forms which the Lord Shiva takes. His 'Kavan Batariya Gailo' in the raga 'Bilawal' was also a catchy number. HE alumni association of the Nalanda Dance Research Centre presented a unique programme of both traditional and innovative dance numbers, the most outstanding being the An Epic of Love, and the non-stop performance was held at Ravindra Natya Mandir. Distinguished exponents like Deepak Mazumdar, Vaibhav Arekar, Madhuri Deshmukh and senior teachers like Dr. Uma Rele, Dr. Malati Agneswaran, Ambika Viswanath – all products of the college, Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya, regaled the jam packed auditorium. The highlight of the day’s was the An Epic of Love, choreographed by Dr. Kanak Rele and performed in three different dance styles -- Mohini Attam, Bharata Natyam and Kathak. The performance was woven round the exquisite Indian poetic tradition of Shringaara Kaavyas (lyrical poems) – which has its roots in Bharata’s Natyashastra in

In Bharata Natyam, a mirthful chit-chat between two young friends was depicted where one says to the other “do you remember that day when that rogue of a fellow came and pulled my hair? He came to my home yesterday and under the pretext of suffering from hiccups demanded water and then held my hand and winked at me.” Delightfully presented by the veteran Malati Agneswaran it Megha Ahire and Malati Agneswaran performing An Epic of Love. created a hilarious atmosthe ashtanayika. ‘Premsutra’— a contemporary love story By Sandeep Hattangadi

D

IRECTOR Tejas Deoskar presents an urban love story Premsutra, set in today’s corporate world and does it well. Anand Joshi (Sandeep Kulkarni) is a corporate climber for whom his career is everything, while love is just a physical relationship. On a trip to Goa he enters into a physical relationship with Saania (Pallavi Subhash) and impregnates her. He wants to marry her but his boss’s (Shishir Sharma) headstrong daughter, Malavika (Shruti Marathe), wants to have Anand as her trophy husband. Unable to deal with rejection she marries Anand’s

best friend Sujit (Lokesh Gupte) who jumps at the opportunity to further his career and have her money. What follows is a manipulation

game between all the characters, and who gets whom is the climax of the film. The film has been beautifully shot in the locales of

Goa by DOP Pushpank Gawade, accompanied by some wonderful Goa inspired music by Susmit Limaye and good dialogues particularly with the corporate vocabulary. The film has some good performances especially by Sandeep Kulkarni and Pallavi Subhash. Shruti Marathe’s super possessive character has been well etched and performed. Lokesh Gupte gets the best role of his career yet and does justice to it, while Shubha Khote, Prasad Pandit, Shishir Sharma, support well. All in all this is a film worth watching for its interesting concept and beautiful performances.

Sudha Productions and producer Anuya Mhaiskar’s ‘Andhali Koshimbir’ is heading towards completion with its shooting progressing fast in Pune. The film directed by Aditya Ingle, stars Ashok Saraf in a stellar role along with Aniket Vishwasrao, Vandana Gupte, Anand Ingle, Priya Bapat, Hemant Dhome, Mrunmayee Deshpande, and Hrishikesh Joshi. The film is about different personalities in a family and the comic situations that arise out of it.

Australia sack coach Mickey Arthur: sources S

YDNEY: Australia’s Ashes campaign with England was in turmoil today just weeks before the series starts after coach Mickey Arthur was sensationally sacked, sources said, with Darren Lehmann expected to be announced as his replacement. South African Arthur was dumped after a meeting with Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland in Bristol, reports said. A source confirmed the news to AFP. “Cricket Australia will hold a media conference with James Sutherland and (high performance coach) Pat Howard in Bristol tonight to discuss the coaching structure of the Australian team,” Cricket Australia said in a statement. Reports said Queensland coach Lehmann, who is in England coaching Australia A, would replace Arthur, 45, whose contract was due to run until the end of the World Cup in March 2015. Arthur, the first foreign-born coach of the Australian team when appointed in November 2011, appears to have paid the price for a poor Champions Trophy campaign and a lack of discipline within the team, which came to a head with a David Warner punch-up incident earlier this month. Sutherland was furious and demanded the team crack down on bad behaviour. Warner was fined AUD 11,500 and suspended until the start of the Ashes series for punching England batsman Joe Root in a Birmingham bar during the Champions Trophy.

ORTALEZA, BRAZIL: Spain set up a Confederations Cup semi-final reunion with Euro 2012 final victims Italy after beating Nigeria 3-0 on a steamy afternoon here to secure top spot in Group B. Vicente del Bosque's side needed just a point to confirm a place in the last four yesterday, but they made doubly sure thanks to a fine brace of goals from Jordi Alba and a 62ndminute header by substitute Fernando Torres. The world and European champions will now face Italy, who they crushed 4-0 in last year's Euro 2012 final, in the second semifinal in Fortaleza on Thursday, a day after Brazil meet Uruguay in Belo Horizonte. Nigeria were ultimately left to rue last Thursday's damaging 2-1 defeat by Uruguay, having begun their Confederations Cup campaign with a breezy 6-1 thrashing of Tahiti. "We played against a better side, a team who've been together for a long time," said Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi. "It's a learning process for us, it's good. We have to continue from where we stopped tonight, and build on that." It was the teams' first meeting since Nigeria beat Spain 3-2 in the group phase of the 1998 World Cup, and if the world champions were out for revenge, they were quick to draw first blood at Estadio Castelao. There were three minutes on the clock when Andres Iniesta sprayed a pass wide to Barcelona teammate Alba, and the left-back weaved around three challenges

Nigeria looked set for an afternoon of toil amid stifling humidity inside the stadium, but despite losing Kenneth Omeruo to injury in the 11th minute, they took the fight to Spain. Brown Ideye and Joseph Akpala spurned half-chances, while Spain goalkeeper Victor Valdes did superbly to tip a snapshot from the recalled Sunday Mba around the post. Despite several slick interchanges, the African champions' composure repeatedly let them down whenever they penetrated the Spanish area, but Spain were not without blame in that department either. Roberto Soldado twice shot straight at Enyeama when clean through on goal, while Cesc Fabregas conspired to hit the post from only eight yards after being picked out by Soldado's sweeping low cross. Ideye should have drawn Nigeria level early in the second half, but although Ahmed Musa's low centre presented him with an open goal at the back post, he miscued and was unable to dispatch a shot.

I TOLD BOYS TO PROVE THAT WE WERE WORLD CHAMPIONS: DHONI SPORTS

B

IRMINGHAM: With just 129 runs to play with in the rain-curtailed final of the ICC Champions Trophy against England here, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni spurred his teammates by telling them to play like world champions and defend a sub-par score. "Before going in I said, let's first of all get rid of the feeling that it's a 50-over game. It's a 20-over game, and we have seen in IPL and in T20 formats, 130 runs can be a difficult target to achieve," Dhoni said. "I told them not to look at the sky or the opposition. I told them that God helps those who help themselves. I said God is not coming to save us. If you want to win this trophy, we'll have to fight it out," he said while addressing the media in the postmatch press conference here last night. "We are the number-one ranked ODI side, so let's make sure that they have to fight for these 130-odd runs. Don't look for any outside help." India defended a modest score of 129 to outwit England by five runs in thrilling final of the ICC Champions Trophy at Edgbaston in a rain-hit match that was ultimately decided by a T20 game. "It is unfair to call it the final of the Champions Trophy. When the final of a 50-over game is decided by a T20 game, then some shine is lost but this win means a lot. We played against the best teams in the world and to beat England in England is always good," Dhoni said. Dhoni singled out praise for Man-of-theMatch Ravindra Jadeja and highest scorer of

Indian players party through the night B

IRMINGHAM: Indian players let their hair down after Champions Trophy triumph as the young brigade partied through the Sunday till wee hours of Monday morning. Champagne overflowed and the players danced to the latest Hindi and Punjabi pop numbers sooner than they returned to their hotel on Birmingham's upmarket Broad Street late in the evening. The final, reduced to just 20 overs a side, had started six hours late after rain ruined most of the day game. Several fans followed the team bus to catch a glimpse of the star players as security guards kept them at safe distance. Sources said the organisers were worried after British Tamils had protested during the India versus Sri Lanka match in Cardiff last week. The Indian team management lifted its "curfew" hours and let the players enjoy themselves to their fullest. Virat Kohli led the celebrations as the rest of India’s young brigade joined in. The party went on till the wee hours of Monday. Team manager Ranjib Biswal said: "We let the boys have some fun. We had generally kept ourselves away from public eye and concentrated on the cricket, but Sunday night belonged to the boys. They won a terrific final and deserved to let their hair down." The Indian team will be travelling to theWest Indies on Wednesday for the tri-series. "There is no time pressure on the boys now. They will relax till they go to London to catch their flight," said Biswal. The absence of senior players in the squad, skipper Mahendra Singh is the senior-most at 31, let the young players have some "extra fun". "But no girlfriends were allowed," a team source informed.
