After 35 years, Mumbai received a papal knight. Senior Advocate Joaquim Reis from Bandra, appointed as Knight Commander with the Plaque of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, talks to Monarose Sheila Pereira about papal knighthood and his achievements

commitment shown to society by the average citizen? Mumbai is a lovely city with plenty of opportunities. However it makes me sad to see the divide between the rich and the poor and the fact that we have lost value for human life. There are organizations like Kripa, Sneha, Aseema and other NGOs doing magnificent and selfless yeomen service and try to restore dignity and respect for every life. We have a long way to go as far as this problem goes. We run a legal advice center at St Andrews where we guide and educate people who are burdened with litigation. As far as the legal system, especially in Mumbai and Delhi, litigation is very costly. Not all citizens can afford to take recourse to law. The legal aid system which aims to help those who cannot afford a lawyer is usually run by junior lawyers. By and large it is the duty of all lawyers to give legal advice and assistance to the poor and needy. Every lawyer must give some time for people who cannot afford the legal fees. Then only shall true justice be delivered.
Do you think the government’s decision to ban porn sites will help curb the menace of pornography?
Saurabh Vaktania Journalist
I think that porn movies and websitea are entertaining elements which youngster need in their daily life style. If government will impose a ban, other options will open.
Afzal Hussain PR executive
It is a good step which the Center has taken. It is better for the younger generation which wastes valuable time watching porn movies. All such websites should be banned.
Ajit Jain Stunt Director
Youngsters have many options to watch porn movies. If websites will be banned, it does not mean they will not get such stuff via CD, mobile phone, etc.
Ganesh Agawle Media student
Porn is fashionable in this current generation, and most importantly, youngsters are ready to pay anything to get it. Don’t know if this decision will help the government tackle the pornography menace.
Rizwan Ansari Businessman
If we talk about India, there are limited websites and if the government will ban them, cases like rape and molestation will decrease. Most of the criminals are committing such acts after watching porn websites.

A melody master at work with his synthesizers. It is R D Burman’s birth anniversary today.
New tracks for 3-D Sholay
Film and entertainment journalist Chaitanya Padukone writes in to mark a special day: Lakhs of ardent RDB fans the world over will be celebrating the occasion, listening and dancing to his evergreen chartbusters. But one diehard RDB fan for whom this day is extra-special is prolific composer – singer Raju Singh, who has been specially invited by the popular Pune-based Pancham Magic fan club, to share nostalgic anecdotes. That’s because the techno-savvy melody-wizard has been assigned the tough task of recreating the audio-tracks of cult film Sholay, for its upcoming 3-D version. Raju is enthusiastic. “Its all thanks to Panchamda’s blessings and the timely references of Javed Akhtar saab and my associate sound designers Kunal Mehta and

Parikshit Lalwan, that I have been assigned the challenging responsibility of replicating and
recreating the background music sound tracks of Sholay, for its upcoming 3-D version which is to be released by August this year.” For the re-creation, they have used the latest hi-tech Dolby Atmos surround sound acoustics which
apparently promise a “mindblowing feel-the-music experience” to movie goers. Raju himself is an expert guitar player who has had the privilege of playing for RDB’s song recordings and background scores for nearly six years up to 1993. This includes the late maestro’s iconic swansong ‘1942: A Love Story’. Raju nostalgically explains, “Since my father Charanjit Singh, an acclaimed electronic keyboards player, used to regularly play for RDB’s recordings, as a kid, I used to attend those sessions. That’s how Panchamda became fond of me and pampered me with chocolates every time. Many years later, when I started playing bass guitar, he insisted that I join his team of musicians. For me it was a dream come true. It was such a passionate pleasure jamming with the genius RDB and his team, since he would constantly come up with tunes and conjure up bizarre sound effects. Even after I joined him, he would still bring chocolates for me.” ‘Sholay’ star Dharmendra is also all praise for the meticulous mission to re-create the audio tracks of the film for the 3-D version.. Reveals Raju, “We happened to be in the same studios where Dharamji’s YPD-2 recordings were also taking place. It was such a huge accolade for us when, with tears in his eyes, he remarked that the 3-D Sholay with its awesome acoustics would be an

We’ve come a long way, baby!
Let’s face it. Traveling by our locals is an ordeal. Trying to buy a season ticket is a seemingly bigger one. And we are so pleased to report that this is now, officially, a breeze that wafts to you online! A couple of weeks ago, we began our first long-term adventure with local trains and decided to opt for a first class pass. Standing at dirty, mucky Kurla station in the queue for a pass was definitely not appealingly, so we spoke to a friend who said she used the IRCTC website to book her pass. Prepared to encounter the worst, we logged on, created an ID, entered stations and waited with bated breath, ready for something to go wrong. Two seconds later, we were redirected to the payment page, checked internet banking as the payment option and voila, we were done! If the online process wasn’t enough to leave us amazed, the delivery process did. The spanking new season ticket reached us within two days, in a clean white glazed envelope with a label properly printed with the correct name and address. The railways are generally at the receiving end of our ire, but when it comes to customer service in this case, they get an A+.

Three years on, state government delays the freeships promised to 10,000 students from reserved categories By Yatin Ingle

ment. The refund is part of the freeship scheme organised by the state government for students belonging to reserved categories. However these students have seen no sign of the refund for over three years. According to the rules of the state government, a student belonging to the backward classes is liable for the freeship scheme. Under this scheme, students have to pay the complete fees for the course they are pursuing, which will later be refunded by the government. As per the rules, the scheme is not applicable for the first year, while the remaining years of Members of the National Congress Party’s student wing protested against the course come under it. the delay of freeships at the Social Welfare Department in Mumbai.
CITY It only last year that the government has introduced an online procedure for the freeship scheme, and has allotted bank accounts to these students to refund the amount. Ganesh Pawar, a student, says “I had applied for the freeship scheme and paid my fees to the college. As per the rules, I am supposed to receive a refund, but it has been more than three years that I am still waiting for it.” Another student, Vikas Kumbhar, a graduate, says “It has been at least two years that I have graduated, but I am still waiting for the refund from the government”. As per the records of the
07 freeship scheme, a student generally receives the refund of his fees in the beginning or middle of the next academic year. Anil Sonwane, Assistant Commissioner, Social Welfare Department, Mumbai Division says, “We have already started the refunding process of the freeships and students will soon receive the amount they paid under the scheme. Students need not worry, as there are a large number of students under the scheme and the verification of their documents can be a long process. We are trying our best to complete the procedure and refund the amount as soon as possible”. Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Most of the constables who were checked are deployed on streets and attached to the traffic department, and while a large number of them have complained of ear, nose and throat problems, many of them have ended up with brain related issues as well. The ENT health drive was aimed at tackling growing
complaints from cops about ear aches, blocked ears, a ringing in their ear, frequent colds, blocked noses, headaches and sore throats, essentially all ENT conditions caused by pollution. Talking to the ADC, Navnath Sonawane, a Police Inspector from Khar Police station who inaugurated the camp, said that, “NGOs like ‘Koshish’ should come forward to conduct more of these ENT checkups for cops who work round-the-clock to ensure a safe and secure

The tussle over control of Siddharth College sees RPI-A leader Ramdas Athavale seeking RR Patil’s help in evicting Republican Sena chief Anandraj Ambedkar

H
ome Minister R R Patil yesterday assured Republican Party of India (RPI-A) president Ramdas Athavale that he would look into the ‘alleged occupation’ of the People’s Education Society and initiate action against the ‘alleged in-
truders’ who have taken over the society’s office in Siddharth College building, in south Mumbai. After his delegation of RPI workers met Patil at the Mantralaya, Athavale told reporters, “The office is illegally occupied by some people and the government should drive them out from the
premises of the People’s Education Society to avoid law and order problems.” It may be recalled that amidst the tussle between members of the governing body of the society, which runs Siddharth College, Republican Sena chief and grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar, Anandraj Ambedkar,
took over as the chairman of the trust on Monday. The trust is the governing body of the college management. After taking charge, Anandraj dismissed college principal Krishna Patil, who was allegedly against his appointment. Athavale has opposed, what he terms, is an illegal take over and has
sought action against the ‘intruders.’ Siddharth College was started by the late Dr B R Ambedkar in 1946 to spread higher education among Dalits, but has been caught in a tussle between two groups wanting to gain control over its governing body. In June last year, 350 pro-

cting quickly in the building collapse case, the Dahisar police on Tuesday registered an FIR under various sections of the IPC against four persons for allegedly causing death due to negligence of seven people. The four happen to be the Piyush CHS ex-chairman Bhikabhai Dudhaat (55), secretary Babubhai Patel (49), developer and owner Nemjibhai Gangar alias Shah (65) and watchman Mansingh Lamsal (40). Gangar reportedly took ownership of the property from one Karmela Kagala in the year 1979, and built three buildings - Piyush, Pallavi and Bhavin on the land. Of the seven persons who died in the tragedy, three happened to be family members of the watchman his 35-year-old wife, sevenyear-old daughter, and his
22-year-old brother-in-law. In 2010, the BMC had declared Piyush as a dangerous building and had sent notices for evacuation and had also said it needed to be either redeveloped or demolished. When Gangar did not respond, the BMC had even registered a complaint against him at the Dahisar police station in 2011. Police Sub inspector (PSI), Vijay Shingade of the Dahisar police station, said, “Lamsal was the watchman of the building for three years and was staying in the building with relatives illegally. Patel and Dudhaat knew that notices had been served by the BMC, but they too did nothing.” Apart from watchman’s family members, four persons who operated a fruit juice stall outside the building were buried under the rubble. Seven others were injured in the incident.

ollowing suggestions from motorists using the Eastern Freeway, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be installing signs along the Freeway at entry and exit points and ramps within two weeks time. Speaking to newspersons yesterday the MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner, U P S Madan, disclosed that signs will be installed at a distance of 500 meters from the start and end of the Freeway as well as on the various ramps. Signs will also be installed at the Chembur end, where motorists find themselves confused with the adjacent service road. Besides this, the MMRDA is also installing noise barriers along the residential areas dotting the Freeway, following complaints of noise pollution from the local residents, stated Madan. The MMRDA has also begun mapping the number of vehicles using the Freeway since it has opened 10 days ago. As of now the daily average number of vehicles using the Freeway has been around 24,000. After the Ghatkopar segment of the Freeway is opened, that number is expected to touch 35,000 vehicles per day. Once the number of vehicles using the Freeway stabilizes, the Traffic police will decide on whether or not to allow heavy vehicles to use the Freeway. Commenting on motorists
covering the Freeway distance in a matter of 8 to 12 minutes, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vivek Phansalkar argued that the motorists need to exercise control on speed of their vehicles. He added that if the speed is not controlled it will lead to accidents. Phansalkar also said if still motorists ignore the warning
signs, the traffic police will have to use Speed Guns to keep a track of over-speeding vehicles. He further added that the impact of the Freeway in reducing the traffic load on the Dr Ambedkar road and P D’Mello road will only be known after the traffic study on the Freeway of the MMRDA is over.
Mom, son ran prostitution racket By Suresh Golani
T
he Anti-Human Trafficking Cell of the Thane (rural) police busted a high profile prostitution racket in Mira Road on Tuesday. Three girls, including a minor, have been rescued by the police team. While a 35year-old woman, identified as Reena Rajveer Singh, was arrested and charged under the stringent Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act, her son, Avinash (19), who is her partner in crime, managed to escape the police dragnet. Acting on information provided regarding a gang
pushing minor girls into flesh trade, a police team led by API Atul Aher, after establishing contact and striking a deal with the woman through a decoy customer, laid a trap near the MHADA colony in Shanti Park on Tuesday afternoon. "We planted a decoy customer, who was told by Reena and
her son that he would have to pay Rs.8,000 for each girl. Our decoy agreed to the deal and asked for the girls. Subsequently, we laid a trap and nabbed Reena while her son escaped. The rescued girls have been sent to a rehabilitation center and further investigations are on,” said the police.
hile cases of children begging in the streets and in trains are not new to Mumbaikars, an arrangement between beggars to ‘exchange’ children among them or ‘hire’ kids to beg in local trains, seems to be the latest trend. More shockingly, these beggars have started laying claim to specific trains and routes as well. A particular beggar can beg only in particular trains and between certain stations, in the manner of local goons who claim control over particular areas. What is unfortunately being missed out by authorities is that children are being trafficked and used by a whole number of beggars to earn sympathy and therefore, money. This reporter has witnessed how a beggar carries a kid to beg at one station, and hands over the child to another beggar at the next station. The beggar, while handing over the child, also pays a particular amount to the second beggar for having borrowed the child. “We complain regularly to the concerned station masters about the increase in the number of beggars in trains and platforms,” said a commuter. While the Government Railway Police (GRP) has been undertaking surprise checks against these beggars, who are mostly disabled, or children themselves, they are often

Pak PM’s role in Srinagar attacks P
ak-trained Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed it was responsible for the attack on an army convoy in Srinagar last week. As many as eight soldiers were killed and 11 injured in the attack which was carried out on the eve of the visit by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. There has been growing terrorist activity in Kashmir since Nawaz Sharif took over as prime minister. He has not uttered a word about the attack in Srinagar. Before the elections, he had said he was a friend of India and he would make all possible efforts to bring about permanent peace and cooperation between the two countries. He said he would come to India even if he was not invited. The attacks in Srinagar have shown that Nawaz Sharif has no intention of becoming a friend of India. He must have known about the attack: He must have okayed increased terror operations in Kashmir. He must have accepted the ISI and the army’s perceptions and plans with regard to Kashmir. Only last week, the Punjab assembly, in which his party has majority, has sanctioned funds to the terror group that was behind Pak’s murder mission in Mumbai five years ago. The funding of the terror group shows that he has no plans for improving relations with India. It is to be noted that after the Hizbul attacks in Srinagar, there has not been a word from him. Nawaz Sharif is now seen in his true colours. He is no friend of India and he will not stop terror operations in Kashmir.

t is time to start asking hard questions about the horrible tragedy in Uttarakhand. The question that has remained uppermost in my mind is why has there been no sign at all of civilian governance ever since the disaster began? I can understand why the government needed help from the army and air force, to bring down people trapped by landslides and ravaged roads in the higher reaches of the Himalayas. And, I can go no further without saying first that every man who risked his life to save the lives of others deserves a Bharat Ratna. The helicopter crash that killed rescuers last week underlines, if there was any need for underlining, the life threatening risks that came with every sortie. To come back though, to what I believe is a question we must start asking now, is why have we seen no sign whatsoever of the elected representatives of the people of Uttarakhand in the past few days? Television reporters have managed to reach villages to which there were no roads left and have reported that there was no food and clean water left in these villages. They have reported that disease has begun to spread because there have been dead bodies and the carcasses of animals left un-cremated. They have sent pictures of half dehydrated children lying in small clinics and talked to doctors who admit that there could be epidemics in the hills. But, in almost not a single story that I have watched on television have I seen an MLA or MP interviewed. Where are they? Why are they not in those villages helping the people who elected them?

views to visiting television anchors, there has not even been any sign of the Chief Minister. This leads inevitably to the real reason why disaster struck so horribly: criminal negligence on the part of the governments that have ruled Uttarakhand. As someone who visits the state at regular intervals, because I have close family living there, I can say with firsthand knowledge that before my eyes I have seen how this criminal negligence works on the ground. Having spent my school years in Dehra Dun I remember the towns of Uttarakhand as they used to be, before corrupt politicians allowed reckless urbanization to ruin them and pave the way for the disaster that has now ruined so many lives. Reckless, unplanned urbanization was al-
pened in Uttarakhand a ‘manmade disaster’. They are right, but for the wrong reasons. They would like all dams on the Ganga stopped and all development stopped as well. Not only is this not possible but it was the dams on the Ganga that have prevented the flash floods from flooding the whole of Uttarakhand. The reasons why the disaster is ‘manmade’ are because politicians have closed their eyes to what was happening either for reasons of greed or some other form of self-aggrandizement. When it comes to this it would be true to say that the BJP and Congress compete for first prize.
Politicians were first to vanish
If we needed proof that our two main political parties are bringing the wrong kind of people into politics it stares us in the face in the wreckage of Uttarakhand. For my part every time I turn on the television news I find myself asking why, if reporters and cameramen carrying heavy equipment can walk seven hours to get to remote villages, Uttarakhand’s MLAs cannot do the same? Sonia Gandhi ordered every Congress MLA to donate a month’s salary to the relief effort, which in the end will be no more than tokenism. Instead, why does she not order every MLA to go to his constituency and provide relief in villages where there is no food and water? Why should we need the Air Force to ferry firewood for Tavleen Singh mass cremations, when it should be much simpler for local officials to make arrangelowed in towns all the way up to the sacred ments? But, then is this not exactly what altemple towns up in the higher reaches and so, ways happens? as most experts have pointed out, this was a In Mumbai after 26/11 the first people to disaster waiting to happen. hose who have not found their true wealth, which is the radiant joy of Being and the deep, unshakable peace that comes with it, are beggars, even if they have great material wealth. They are looking outside for scraps of pleasure or fulfillment, for validation, security, or love, while they have a treasure within that not only includes all those things but is infinitely greater than anything the world can offer. The word enlightenment conjures up the idea of some super-human accomplishment, and the ego likes to keep it that way, but it is simply your natural state of felt oneness with Being. It is a state of connectedness with something immeasurable and indestructible, something that, almost paradoxically, is essentially you and yet is much greater than you. It is finding your true nature beyond name and form. The inability to feel this connectedness gives rise to the illusion of separation, from yourself and from the world around you. You then perceive yourself, consciously or unconsciously, as an isolated frag-

Now, Uttarakhand disaster gets a political hue! THE natural disaster in Uttarakhand seems to have assumed political overtones. A couple of chief ministers have come under criticism for rescuing the people belonging to their respective states only. In this context, it would not be out of place to look at the international situation that prevailed during January/ February 1991. In the wake of the Iraq war, there was hectic rush to clear the Indians stranded in the war zone. A top functionary of the then govt. went personally to Iraq to supervise the evacuation of the people by air, who hailed from his home state. A vast number of others from the rest of India were left to trudge a long winding land route via Jordan to make a detour to India by all sorts of available transports. — Arun Malankar, Santa Cruz
SELFISH MOTIVE: Several chief ministers rushed to Uttarakhand and did the rescue act only for victims belonging to their own states. THIS refers to the edit-page article, ‘Cong’s incompetence exposed in Uttarakhand’ (ADC, June 26) by Arati Jerath. Without holding any brief for any party, it needs to be pointed out that what had happened in Uttarakhand
was a mega disaster of unmanageable proportions in a terrain that is treacherous even under normal conditions with high hills belonging to the sub-Himalayan range, deep valleys with steeply-sloping banks and ferocious rivers like the

oil on which India heavily relies, and will fuel already high consumer inflation. The strengthening of dollar is hurting the rupee. Indian currency was showing continuous weakness. With the US economy improving, there is mounting speculation that the US Federal Reserve could “reverse” its monetary stimulus programme sooner than expected. Analysts believe the rupee will fall further. The currency’s slide is due to weak RBI policy and the government’s inability to hold the rupee steady against dollar. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) likely sold dollars via state-run banks after the rupee slid to a record low recently, several dealers said, as fears of foreign outflows from India are roiling domestic bond and stock markets. — S. D.M. Sukhthankar, it will be safest if Mumbai and Navi Mumbai have protective measures like those in the Netherlands and Singapore. There should be no more reclamation for the safer future. Let’s not go against the nature for any reason. Otherwise we’ll have to face the fatal natural calamities often. In addition, we ought to protect the mangroves, at any cost. All the past plans of BMC as well as of the Maharashtra state govt. ‘on paper’ regarding Mumbai should be implemented on a war footing before going ahead with any of the projects. Besides, it will also be the safest not to give any permission to construct the high-rise towers of 20 and 25 stories at ‘any cost,’ particularly not at all at the cost of the precious lives of more than one crore Mumbaikars.

TIME TO ACT: It is time India hits back at terrorists through action and it is high time we stop indulging in diplomatic talks with Pakistan, as it is funding terrorism openly now. PAKISTAN’S unprovoked firing on the Indian outposts in Poonch seems to be a miscalculated risk. The theocratic nation appears to be under the false impression that the natural disaster in Uttarakhand would keep some units of the Indian Army busy in rescue operations. As such, they stand a good chance of grabbing a small chunk of the Indian territory. The religious bigots would soon re-
TERROR has t-“error” in it. Eight army men have lost their lives as terror has struck brazenly in the Kashmir valley once again. How long are we going to soft pedal issues related to national security and terrorist organisations? Ever so often, terror from across the border spreads havoc in our country and we do precious little to end the menace. Diplomatic protests, and banning of cricket matches against Pakistan is not going to help, we need to consider military action at some point of time to flush out militants from the Kashmir valley. We have enough proof that our neighbour is funding terrorist outfits, so what are we waiting for? Another attack? India can only be called a free country, when its citizens can move around freely without the fear of terror. — Altaf H. Ladiwala, Bandra

Sometimes, the simplest things can make us fall head-overheels for someone, but we’d never think to tell our better halves what they are. Take a look to see if your man was one of the few that Rhea Dhanbhoora & Priyanka Singh spoke to in order to find 20 things that guys love about their women, but have never told them
G
uys aren’t the most openly romantic, so we don’t always know what they love in their girls. Unless your guy is the overly mushy sort, 9 times out of 10 there are little things about you that he adores but will never tell you. But, we’d all love to know, right? We asked a few guys in the city what they love about their girlfriends or wives, but we kept it anonymous to make it a little more interesting. We also got some celebrities to open up and tell us what they love about their leading ladies. Read through and see whether you spot something familiar — your guy may have told us what he loves about you!
#1: Her spot-on decisions “I love the way she treats strangers. Her ability to be spot-on when it comes to punishing or forgiving people is really amazing. Especially because we usually forgive what we shouldn’t and punish what doesn’t deserve to be punished. She always gets it right and it never ceases to amaze me.”
#2: Her love for food -

“I love that she loves to eat as much as I do. A woman with an appetite is much more appealing to me than someone who is always watching what she eats and worried about fat in every meal. This way, we can enjoy a good meal without her complaining about calories all the time.”

#3: Her subtle messages to me “I love that even though she’s putting up seemingly generic Facebook and Twitter posts, she’s actually putting up things that she knows I have an interest in, because she knows I’ll see them.”
#4: Her drive to succeed “I love that my woman is ambitious. She has her own goals, her own life which she is extremely passionate about. I love seeing the stars in her eyes when she discusses achieving her goals. I wouldn’t want to be the centre of her universe — my worst nightmare is a clingy girl with nothing to do but stalk me all day.”
#5: tHat sHe made an effort to love wHat i love “I love that she loves football as much as I do. Although, that happened gradually. She hated the game before we were together and had no idea what it was about. But, because she saw that I was so enthusiastic about it, she started to watch the games with me and told me that she’d like to learn more about football. When I asked her why, she said that if it made me so happy, she wanted to be a part of it too. That floored me.” Continued on pg 14 «

>> Since your man isn’t letting you in on what he loves about you, we got him to tell us
#16: that she’s assertive but shy “One thing I love most is her way of saying yes and no. The beauty about it is her shy yet assertive attitude. I also love that she is independent and doesn’t expect her man to take the initiative all the time.” — anuj saxena
#17: when she plans things “I like when she surprises me with a visit, plans an evening out or dresses up for me. Her gestures and effort are what matters. Small things count a lot and that’s the real expression of love. I also like she understands silence or hears what is not said, but is meant for her.” — dheeraj dhoopar
#18: when she learns something for me Continued from pg 13 «
#6: she understands what’s important to me “She understands that cricket matches are important to me, especially if they are on the weekend. I like to spend that time with my buddies, hooting loudly and chugging beer. She gets that it gives me joy and gives me a break from my daily routine, letting me have my time with the boys. This understated understanding makes me value her more.”
#7: her confidence “She doesn’t ask me what I’ll like when it comes to her looks. I love that about her. For example, she’ll get a haircut and surprise me with it when I reach home. Or, she’ll wear a new dress that she bought and ask me if I like it. But, the first move when it comes to her looks is always by her. We once had a conversation about it and she said that it is important for her to look good for herself, which I completely agree with.”
#8: how she quotes lines from movies “We are both movie buffs and watch most movies together. I love it when she comes back with a retort that is straight out of a movie. And then I do the same. It works well when we are having an argument and in the middle of it, she’ll crack a line that will get me thinking about which movie it belongs to and what my filmy comeback should be. It makes me forget about the argument.”
#9: that i can share everything with her “Everyone wants someone to share things with, to have someone to pour their heart out to. Well, I may never have told my girl how well she fits that role, or how much I value it — but it’s one of the things I love
most about her. She remembers everything I’ve told her, even if I don’t and to have someone to listen to me like that isn’t possible unless they really care. It’s one of my favourite things about her.”
#10: how much the little things mean to her “I love how passionate she gets about which pair of earrings or what colour hair clip will go best with what she’s wearing. The little things are so important to her! I never tell her, but I find it adorable how much it matters to her.”
#11: her desire to correct me “Whenever I do something wrong, she’s the first to swoop in and correct me. I love how she jumps on things so quickly and is always right. Sometimes, I deliberately make mistakes so that I can see her jumping in to correct me.” >> Your man is more observant than you think and it’s always the little things he adores about you
#12: how secure she is “I’m lucky that my girlfriend is secure enough not to get annoyed or jealous because of other girls. I absolutely love how she checks out other women in front of me and she comments about things that generally only guys would.”
#13: when she takes control of situations “My girlfriend is a control freak and she thinks that it annoys me, but I find it really cute. I especially love it when I’m being indecisive or when it’s time to get something done; she has absolutely no patience and immediately just switches to control mode, making all the decisions and bossing me around. It’s also really cute when she has to have everything in a particular way, or else she’ll go nuts — and I’m not particular at all, so it’s a good balance. If she knew I liked it, she’d probably start ordering me to be in control more, so I suppose that’s why she doesn’t know!”
#14: that i can depend on her “The fact that I can depend on her to be there when I need to talk about my worries or low points is amazing. Even if she can’t always help me through my problems, just being able to talk to her about them without her judging me is enough. I don’t think I ever realised how much I love that about her before.”
#15: the way she laughs “There are so many little things I love about my girlfriend. But, if there had to be just one thing that I love but I’ve never told her about, it has to be the way she laughs. She’s a bit embarrassed because it’s a loud laugh, but it’s the most infectious laugh and so genuine. It’s an added bonus when I’m the reason she’s laughing so much.”
“I love it when a girl surprises me by making the effort to learn something for me — in my case it was cooking. My wife didn’t even know how to cook when we met, but learnt to cook specially for me. Small gestures by her make me feel good.” — rakesh paul
#19: when she does something sweet for me
“I like when my girl does something sweet for me. When I am looking for something to buy but can’t find it, she goes out and buys it for me. She pays me surprise visits on set, sends me flowers when there is no occasion; all these things appeal to me. I also like it when she says what she wants directly.” — Jay soni
#20: that she is my equal “It’s great when my girl doesn't discriminate and behaves like my equal. I don’t like it when a girl has unnecessary demands just because she is a girl. I like a girl who doesn’t get angry too quickly about little things. Girls who have patience and are good listeners impress me.” — shashank vyas

How do you keep your skin healthy and glowing? To help my skin glow, I ensure that I eat a balanced diet. Eating healthy is my mantra and I include fruits and boiled vegetables in my diet daily. I feel this enhances my glow. What do you think is the biggest makeup mistake women make? Many women don’t take the time to apply their makeup properly. To get good results, you need to put in a little effort. Also, many women don’t follow the proper steps when they remove their makeup. That’s a big mistake!

Are you an impulsive shopper? Tell us what your favorite shopping destinations are? Yes, I am definitely an impulsive shopper. If something catches my eye, I buy it without thinking twice. I mostly shop abroad and my favourite shopping destination has to be Bangkok. But, the Palladium, in Phoenix Mills and Infiniti 2 in Malad come a close second.
One beauty tip that you would like to share with our readers? Add just a few lemon drops to your body lotion every day. It’s a good tip and I make sure I follow it. It makes your skin glow and helps it look healthier. Eating healthy and fresh food (fruits and boiled vegetables) is absolutely mandatory for glowing skin. You need a balanced diet and you need to be feeling great in order for your skin to look great.
1. MaC This BB cream from MAC is worth the price tag. Called the Prep + Prime Beauty Balm, it does exactly that with its lightly tinted beige tone. It suits almost all complexions and balances texture as well as acts as a face primer. It also has SPF 35, which is great for Indian weather. Price: `1,788
2. dior If you’ve got combination skin, this is the perfect cream for you. Coverage is light, so people with problem skin may need something heavier. It’s non-greasy and has a slight sheen, so your skin won’t look dull. Price: `3,549
3. garnier For dry skin, Garnier’s BB cream is a must-buy. It has decent coverage, which means it will cover most marks. It’s a little greasy, so if you’re looking for a matte finish or have oily skin, it’s not the right one for you. Price `99

Malaika arora-khan
The sequinned jumpsuit on its own could look like a disco boiler suit, but as expected, Malaika adds loads of oomph and sex appeal. We like that she’s kept the rest of her look simple. However, we feel that strappy shoes might have worked better.
«
ileana dCruz
We are floored by this gown! The thigh high slit and understated sexy neckline elevates her to bombshell status. Her hair is perfectly done in loose waves. We think that Angelina Jolie could take a few pointers from Ileana on how to stand in a dress with a slit.
«
Preeti Jhangiani
For some reason, this look just screams mutton dressing up as lamb. The off-shoulder is out of style and it reveals too much. The material is cheap and the hemline is too short. An overall unflattering look for the otherwise pretty Preeti.
« 5 WAYS TO ROCK: ROCK SHORTS TO WORK Rhea Dhanbhoora shows you how to wear shorts to work this monsoon 1. lengthy MatterS Pick the right length so that your shorts don’t look out of place. You wouldn’t wear mini-skirts to work would you? So, don’t wear short shorts either. Knee-length shorts are best because if they’re too long, you run the risk of looking dowdy and unkempt. 2. dreSS theM uP Wearing shorts to work means that you will have to make them look a little formal. So, choose shorts with prints or embellished hems. And, instead of plain cottons, opt for synthetic shorts or those with a slight sheen. Pair your shorts with a jacket and subtle accessories.
Who would you like to go out on a date with and why? Since I am currently seeing Shakti Arora, who has recently become extremely popular as Dr. Onir Dutt in the daily soap Pavitra Rishta, I think my answer is pretty obvious. He is the only one I would love to date. (Smiles)

4. Maybelline If you want light coverage and oil protection, Maybelline’s BB cream is the right choice. We’re fans of the BB stick since it’s made for oily Indian skin, but the cream also evens out skin tone and hides blemishes. Price `199 5. Clinique We think this is a good option for older women because it also has age defense, that helps fight against ageing while giving you all the benefits of a BB cream. It’s hydrating, keeps your skin healthy and contains antioxidants to improve your skin on regular application. Price `1,900
3. toP & bottoM Your blouse also makes a big difference. If you wear a strappy top, a casual t-shirt or a racerback, you’re going to look like you stepped into work in the middle of your summer holiday. Choose short sleeved shirts, button up blouses and slightly more formal looking tops. Don’t wear anything too long or too short. 4. beSt foot forward Flip flops should never be worn to work, no matter how casual your office environment is. Sandals and ballet shoes, while appropriate for work, can make your look too casual. Pair shorts with heeled sandals or wedges for a slightly more work appropriate look. 5. Colour wiSe Light colours are a no-no during monsoon, but even if you think you can get past the rain with your pastel bottoms, avoid them when it comes to shorts. Shorts look casual, so wear them in earthy tones or darker hues for a formal look. Beige and navy are great options if you >> Short shorts and very dressy tops like find black boring. And, we’re sure you know, denim this one are definitely not work appropriate! shorts are a definite work style faux pas.
« JUST OUT! laCto CalaMine Sun Shield The Lacto Calamine Sunshield with SPF 30 might not be ideal for a day on the beach when you need some serious protection but it’s great for daily wear especially during the monsoon. The texture is light and it gets absorbed fast. Another thing we like about this sunscreen is that it doesn’t leave a greasy white film on your face. It’s ideal if your skin is on the dry side as the aloe vera in it adds a touch of moisture. Another good thing is that unlike some sunscreens, it doesn’t make your face feel clogged and overly hot. The vitamin E extracts also promise to reduce pigmentation, but we didn’t notice much of an improvement. As a daily wear sunscreen, this makes it to our makeup bag. Price `199 where Medical stores across the city Star rating: **** inglot #278 liPStiCk It’s rare that a lipstick will shock me. But, opening the sleek black tube to reveal a pop of bright orange was really surprising. It was really orange. The colour is typical 80s — vibrant with a hint of neon. The orange is intense and looks as shocking on the lips as it does in the tube. The lipstick glides on easily; perhaps too easily as attempts to smack it together with my lips resulted in the lipstick literally sliding across my lips from side to side. On its own, this lipstick will not work; unless of course you’re going for a Nicki Minaj concert. But, that doesn’t mean that it’s not worth picking up. A little experimentation later, we realised that this pop colour works well as a cheek stain (mix it with moisturiser for fluidity) and if blended with a darker shade of lipstick (or brown eyeliner pencil as we used) it lends a lightness and radiant undertone. SAVE WITH ELEGANCE W That is the motto that Sonia Agarwal, founder of Whitenife, aims to advocate. Her company is active in promoting the use of Elfh, a composite that can replace ivory and so, protect elephants. Dev Goswami gets talking to her about her cause and finds out more about Elfh
hile we all are aware about the illegality of ivory trade, it’s rare to come across someone who takes that up as a cause on a large scale. Sonia Agarwal is one such rarity. She founded Whitenife, a social enterprise that aims to stop the trade of ivory. Her company has launched a product called Elfh that can replace ivory. They are also active in providing employment to artisan families. We talk to Sonia to find out more.
Most people know that poaching elephants is illegal. But, it’s rare that someone takes that up as a cause. What made you do so? Ever since I was young, I have highly regarded and respected nature. With Whitenife, I am able to save the elephant, the art and the artisans. It isn’t just the call of nature that got me to found Whitenife, it was also the love for beauty that did. Nature and art have always been two of the most mystifying worlds and with Whitenife they get to co-exist.
>> Sonia along with a few Elfh products that have been made by artist communities and (inset) a painting that is done on Elfh. You can purchase their products from www.whitenife.com
Tell us about Elfh. Elfh is a mineral-based composite, designed to be 89% identical to genuine elephant ivory, with regards to mechanical as well as aesthetic properties. Elfh has some interesting characteristics that permit artisans to work with the similar comfort level, skills and intricacy as ivory. A similar cause, that is quite popular is that of fur. How does your cause compare to that? The faux fur industry didn’t quite have the desired impact, it resulted in the demand for real fur to peak.
But Elfh is close to real ivory both aesthetically and mechanically. It has the same texture and detailing as ivory and has also been found to be very tool-friendly by artisans.
Do you employ artisan communities to provide them with work or is it also because of their quality and finish of their products? The choice of craftsmanship is very vital to the ethos of Whitenife. The company came into being with the thought that artisans who currently work with ivory/bone would start to work with Elfh. Also, the love, passion and painstaking handcarving is what makes the products even more beautiful. You also love fashion. What does fashion mean to you? Coco Chanel once said that ‘Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.’ Whitenife lives by this thought in many regards. We believe fashion permeates every sphere of our lives and needs to evolve with the needs of our time. We intend to keep it non-intrusive and at the same time constructive with our venture. When you think about what you’ve achieved so far, do you feel happy? Or do you think that you still have a long way to go. I am happy and content with the way Whitenife has shaped up till date. It has generated employment and touched upon the lives of so many artists. Having said that, I believe we have a long way to go in making our presence felt globally and we continue to endeavour to that end.

« CAREER ADVICE fInd out What to do If you are overburdened I work in a PR firm that has its head office in Bangalore. My boss is the branch head of Mumbai and he refuses to hire more people because of that the current employees, including me, have too much on our plates. Should I talk to my colleagues and collectively bring it up in front of the boss or should I only speak to him myself about the work overload I’ve been facing? — alisha Patel, sion dear alisha, The answer to your quandary depends on the rapport you have with your colleagues and how much you trust them. Going collectively will definitely make a difference but if you are confident enough I suggest that you try speaking to your boss personally first. You don’t want to be working under a boss who holds a grudge against you for ‘ganging up’ against him. However, if you do talk to him on your own and he still doesn’t do anything about the situation, then it would a good idea to speak to your colleagues and bring up the issue as a group. I am an intern at a relatively new media firm. This is my first internship and I went in
thinking it would be a great learning experience. However, everybody is busy doing their own thing and it doesn’t seem to matter to anyone that I am sitting with absolutely no work. I have not been able to actually learn or contribute much. Can you please tell me what I can do about this? — seema shah, bandra dear seema, If you are not learning anything and you are not getting paid either, it is a clear waste of your time interning at this place. I suggest you be proactive and try to get your colleagues or bosses to assign you with work or teach you how to go about it, otherwise you are going to lose interest in the internship. If you are scared of talking to them in person, you could try emailing the person in-charge about the problem you are facing at work. If the situation remains the same even after you’ve raised the topic, you should probably look for another internship rather than wasting your time here. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before Wednesday

>> Shweta Katti tells us that while she’s not sure what she will be studying, if she studies psychology, she’d love to set up a free therapy centre for the people of her community
Shwetha Kannan gets talking to Shweta Katti, who was raised in Kamathipura, about her family, career and move to the Big Apple
W
hen Shweta Katti, who was raised in the infamous red light district in Mumbai, was contacted by ADC for an interview, she made some assumptions about what it would be about. She assumed that it would be about her journey from being a girl from Kamathipura to one who is going to pursue her graduation at Bard College in New York. After all, she has been the talk of the town for these reasons. No wonder she seemed disinterested at the beginning of our interview. “I am bored saying the same things again and again,” she said. But, when we asked her questions that not many had asked her before, she opened up, became her real self and the “interview” turned into a friendly chat which gave us a peep into the real Shweta, who is like any other teenager: full of life, and has opinions on family, relationships, marriage and career; a girl who wants to live life on her own terms. The conversation started off like this… So, we all know your story Shweta. Tell us something that you haven’t told anybody as yet. “Hmm…there’s nothing that I haven’t already told you. I am going to the US for studies and might pursue psychology. Can we do this quickly? I have an appointment with a sponsor,” Shweta said politely with a smile. Why go abroad for your graduation? And why USA and not another country? “The education system there is much better than it is here. And, it has been my dream to go to the USA! It’s the USA after all,” she said. And from there the conversation picked up and every question was answered with bubbling excitement. She said she is “crazily excited” about exploring her dream destination which according to her “is the place to be”, but she is not sure about what course she will take up. “It might be psychology but I will pukka pukka decide later,” said Shweta. Whatever course she might do, she promises to bring back her knowledge to her country and use it to serve her community. “I don’t plan to settle down there. I will come back to India. This is my home. This is where I belong,” she said. When it comes to home and the community of sex workers, Shweta spoke about her relationship with her mother. “I haven’t told many people about this,” she said. “We are like friends and discuss everything.” Shweta spoke about how in eighteen years, it was only recently that she said “I love you” to her mother for the first time. “I had never said I love you to mom and she too never said it to me. Last year, when I was talking to her on the phone, the words just slipped out of my mouth. I don’t know why and how, but I just said ‘I love you, mom’ and she was so shocked
‘I WANT TO ENJOY LIFE’
she asked, “Ok. Ye kya ho gaya tujhe?” And what about her mom’s response? “The first few times she didn’t react. Then I forced her to say ‘I love you too’ and now we exchange these words every day,” said Shweta, whose main aim is to give her mother a comfortable life. “I always tease my mother by saying that I will marry a firang and she gets hyper and yells “no” to which I say ‘Tujhe thodi hi karni hai’. She insists on having an Indian damaad. She is okay with me having a boyfriend but she says that I should marry him only. She is cool.” So, the ADC asked Shweta about her views on relationships and marriage. “I don’t think that you need to marry your boyfriend. What if he isn’t your type?” And what is Shweta’s type of guy? “My guy needs to be open-minded, not possessive. He should let me live the way I want to. He must enjoy his life and let me enjoy mine,” said this teenager who isn’t keen on marrying. “I am not interested in marriage anyway. If I find the perfect man, I’ll think about it. Marriage isn’t going to be before 30 or 35 for me. I want to enjoy life,” she declares. Right now, besides her impending trip to the USA, there isn’t much else on her mind before she flies out in August this year. “I need a laptop, a camera, a smartphone. I also need to shop for some clothes. But, I need money for this. Clothes aren’t a must as I can manage with whatever I have, but a camera is a must as I am interested in photography,” said Shweta. Now that Shweta has become a celebrity of sorts, how do her friends feel? “My friends are happy for me. But I don’t know how mom feels. I am sure she is happy but also sad. I will be away from her for four years. See, I love my family but I don’t want to be tied down. I want to travel the world and explore life,” she added. And how does Shweta see her future in the US? “I don’t know. Waha jaake pata chalega. It is going be a great experience. I will see the good and the bad sides of that country. I will meet new people, some of whom I may like, some I may not. I am sure I will adjust well. I will visit new places and try new cuisines. But yes, I will miss Indian food. I love paav bhaji and chicken,” said Shweta who manages to cook dal chawal, make tomato chutney, ‘aade thede’ omelette and chapattis. While happily posing for pictures and signing off, Shweta told us... “I am going to make my mother and my community happy and proud of me. I will take my mum to the US for a vacation. And, if I happen to take up psychology, once I earn enough money, I will open a free therapy centre for the people of my community here as that is the need of the hour for them.”

I love him to pieces and would never think of leaving him, but this lull that has hit our marriage is really getting me down. What should I do to make him more fun and put some life into my marriage? Priya Malhotra, Colaba
Dear Priya, Don’t make him more fun, try to make yourself more fun. You can’t expect just one person to bring “fun” to the table. Why should he do all the planning? When was the last time you planned something fun? If you want fun, make it happen! If you want your love life to be exciting, you need to work on it, especially after marriage. Like work,
Oh Aki, you’re too much!

And yes, I am a big flirt with all of them and it was all fun and fine until one morning...
Hey gorgeous! Matching again!
Mostly As
When it comes to the metaphorical pants in your relationship, there is no argument that you are the one wearing them. You make all the decisions, you do all the work and you pay for everything too! At first, he might seem like a dream partner, but a relationship where he just follows your lead and never airs his own thoughts or preferences can soon become a boring one.
Don’t you “Hey” me! I saw you flirting with those cows from sales yesterday!
Huh? What?!
It turns out Kara thought we were dating! I feel embarrassed for her. The thing is, I already have someone... Georgio!
Mostly Bs
We don’t know what made you take this quiz, because you are definitely not the man in your relationship. However, what we can’t be sure of is whether your boyfriend is the dominating one or whether both of you share a balanced relationship. You will need to use your own discretion to answer this question.
your relationship needs to be made a priority. Do things that you enjoyed doing when you and your husband first started dating. Compliment each other and plan more outings. Work fun into your calendar so that both of you have something to look forward to. Take the initiative now and tell him to take turns in planning date nights.
“I thought she knew! I thought everyone knew! I don’t really want to ‘come out’ with the people at work because I don’t think it is appropriate to discuss sexuality at work and also because I am a rather private person. But Kara is making work hell! What to do?”— Akhilesh K. a) If discussing sexuality is inappropriate, so is flirting! Stop it! b) You have to tell her. You’re flirting with a single, perhaps lonely woman. If you don’t want to spell it out, maybe you, your boyfriend and her can meet for drinks and she will get the hint. c) Ignore her. She sounds clingy. Thank heavens your gay! LAST WEEK: R should pick Option A: Just because she used your mug doesn’t mean that she has feelings for your boyfriend. Tell her that you like drinking your coffee in that mug. She should get the hint.

DHARAMJI DANCED WITH ME: ALI ASGAR
By Chaitanya Padukone
easoned cine and TV actor and stand-up comedian Ali Asgar (of ‘Jeanie Aur Juju’ fame) seemed euphoric at the event hosted by comedy channel SAB TV, to showcase their revamped look with a host of new serials. “Besides the fact that we have completed 165 episodes and heading towards 200, I am also playing a riveting title role in a serial for the first time .That too in an unusual love-story with a female genie (Jeanie) played by the charming Gia Manek,” says Ali who just can’t get over the praise he recently received from legend Dharmendra. “It was while I was in the ‘get-up’ of the naughty, coquettish energetic ‘daadi’ and posing as Anarkali with Dharamji in this new show ‘Comedy Nights’, that Dharamji complimented me on my performance. I was so thrilled that I hugged him and even danced with him. These were memorable moments for me and I was surprised at Dharamji’s simplicity. Some of our popular film stars like Vidya Balan and Suneil Shetty are so modest with no tantrums, that I feel some of our attitude-prone TV stars have a lot to learn from them,” adds Ali. Few know that Ali is a die-hard fan of the legendary comedian-actor Mehmood. “Mehmood-bhaijaan is my inspiration and I have seen all his movies several times, especially Kunwara Baap. Frankly, I consider myself very lucky that I got a chance to act in Dushman Duniya Ka (1996) which he directed. The day I first met Bhaijaan, it was emotionally overwhelming and I shed tears of joy,” recalls the affable Asgar.

Gold Prices Fall To Their Lowest In Almost Three Years In The International Markets
By Mayura Shanbaug
G
old fell to its lowest in almost three years on yesterday in the international markets, putting it on course for a record quarterly loss, as U.S. economic data increased fears that the Federal Reserve will soon end its ultra-loose monetary policy. Prices could slide further some investors say below $1,000 per ounce - while there is little potential for data, market trends or economic developments in the United States or Europe to reverse an accelerating investor move out of gold. Spot gold tumbled to its lowest since August 2010 at $1,223.54/ ounce and was down 4% at $1,227.86 an ounce on London Metal Exchange. In India, it’s Mayhem for bullion traders and jewellery companies. Following a weak global trend coupled with fears that the government will unveil more curbs to stall the supply of gold, Gold prices fell by Rs 417 to Rs 26,142 per ten grams in the futures market yesterday as speculators offloaded their positions. Spot gold was down 2.75% at Rs 26,010 per 10 grams in Mumbai. The sluggish
demand due to off-marriage season in the spot market further influenced the sentiment said the experts. According to Nitin Nachnani, Research Analyst, Geojit Comtrade, the large leg of sell off after the recent FOMC data, has put psychological pressure on investors to square off positions resulting in the fresh downturn in the yellow metal. “I see support level of $ 1170 per ounce on COMEX. In the domestic market however, the first psychological barrier will be Rs 25,000 per 10 grams,” said Nachnani. “From that level fresh triggers will see gold pushing Rs 23,000 per 10 grams. All eyes should be on the dollar –rupee equation,” he said. On Monday, All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) had asked its 42,000 members across India to suspend sale of gold coins and bars in order to reduce investment demand and curb imports to improve the country’s current account deficit situation. “We are supporting the Federation’s call. We are going to reduce sale of gold coins and bars. Instead we will focus on lower carat jewellery
and value added products,” said Mehul Choksi, MD, Gitanjali Gems. Incidentally, his company’s stock was badly hit and a three-day fall in the stocks of Gitanjali Gems has wiped out 19.54 billion rupees, or half of companies market capitalisation. The company in a statement yesterday had said that it plans to increase diamond jewellery sales for offsetting the potential decline in sales from low margin gold jewellery, which accounted for 25-30 percent of total revenues. It is believed that jewelers have taken this proactive step as they fear that their business will adversely affect if the government takes more measures including a further hike in import duty of gold from 8 % to check the CAD. Jewelers believe that stopping sale of gold bars and coins, which comprise 35 % of the total demand, will reduce imports by 10-15 %. Gold imports in India, the world’s largest consumers, is expected to more than halve to 150 tonnes in the July- September quarter, as against about 350 tonnes in the first quarter of this fiscal.

CRISIL - AMFI launch Mutual Funds Performance Indices By A Business Reporter
C

RISIL and the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) yesterday jointly launched a group of mutual fund performance indices across five categories — equity funds, equity-linked savings schemes (ELSS), debt funds, money market funds and hybrid funds. These co-branded indices, the first of their kind in the country, represent the performance of various mutual fund categories and enable comparison of these categories with appropriate benchmarks across time frames and market cycles. By increasing awareness about the per-
formance of mutual funds, the indices will help in bringing greater transparency and boost investor confidence. Based on time series data since 1997, the indices have been developed and will be maintained by CRISIL. They cover five broad mutual fund categories, and are named CRISIL-AMFI Equity Fund Performance Index, CRISIL-AMFI ELSS Fund Performance Index, CRISIL-AMFI Debt Fund Performance Index, CRISIL-AMFI Money Market Fund Performance Index and CRISILAMFI Hybrid Fund Performance Index. These indices also have various sub-categories. The indices will

I AM a 21-year old boy, studying in college and quite popular with the girls. However, I am a little shy by nature. A girl whom I know for the last 2-3 years is interested in me, but I am hesitant to make the first move. All I have been able to do is stare at her. I want to know if it would be appropriate to go to a girl, after three years of knowing her, and say that I like her. Do you think it’s too late for me now, or do I still have a chance? Well, you will never know until you ask her, will you? It is never too late Dr. Rajan B. Bhonsle to give a voice to your feelings. Many girls carry an apprehension about sexual intercourse and, therefore, are unable to comfortably respond during the first few experiences of intercourse. This may also happen because her emotional involvement in this relationship is not yet ripe. A woman’s sexuality is usually “heart oriented”. She usually gets aroused only when she is emotionally involved with the husband. Wait a little. Don’t rush things. Let her relax into this relationship. If things still do not change, then there might be

I LOVE this girl. We like each other a lot and spend good amount of time with each other. I am 27 and she is 26. I wish to know how to ignite her passion. Is there any technique that will not fail? Lighting a flame of love in her heart is a sure shot way to passion. If you are loving and caring in your relationship with her and share a great deal of warmth, it does not take any learning for the warmth to change into passion. On the other hand, if your relationship is a selfish one, you will always be running out of techniques to ignite passion, as every method will lose its charm soon. The only thing that keeps the passion alive forever is LOVE. Heart To Heart Counselling Centre runs Certificate courses in Counselling & Sex Education at 10 Jerbai Baug, Byculla (E), Mumbai-27. 29 BHUPATHIKNOWLE MOVE TO SECOND ROUND
EUGENIE STUNS IVANOVIC
L
ONDON: Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard earned one of the biggest wins of her career Wednesday by upsetting No. 12 seed Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-3 in second-round play at Wimbledon. The match was moved to Centre court from an outside court on short notice after secondseededVictoria Azarenka withdrew with an injury. Bouchard needed 62 minutes to complete the victory and advance to the third round of a Grand Slam event for the first time in her career. “We only heard about the court change 15 minutes before the match,” said Bouchard. “I was actually quite excited. It was crazy to play in front of a big crowd like this, I’m really happy. I was focusing on returns and neutralizing her first serve and I think I did that very well.”
The 19-year-old Canadian, who won the junior title here a year ago, had her serve broken while serving for the win. Bouchard followed with a break of her own when the veteran Serb put a ball into the net on the second match point. “I’m happy to be playing well again,” Bouchard said. “After winning the juniors, Wimbledon feels like my second home.” Bouchard, from Montreal, finished with 14 winners and 11 unforced errors. She will play next against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro, who beat Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 1-6, 6-3, 63. The Canadian improved to 21-14 on the season. She has posted some other big wins this year, including a third-round victory over U.S. Open winner Samantha Stosur last April at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C.
HEWITT BROWN BEATEN L
ONDON: Lleyton Hewitt's Wimbledon campaign ended with a shock loss to flamboyant German qualifier Dustin Brown in the second round. The 32-year-old Australian failed to build on his first round-upset win over 11th seed Stanislas Wawrinka, losing 6-4 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 to 189th-ranked Brown. It was only Hewitt's second loss in 13 matches against qualifiers at grand slam events and the defeat leaves Bernard Tomic as the only Australian left in the men's singles draw. Journeyman Brown, 28, produced one of the performances of his life as he reached the third round of a grand slam for the first time. Sporting long, dreadlocked hair, the German - who changed his nationality from Jamaican in 2010 - came out swinging from the hip. And his high-risk approach paid off with Hewitt, the 2002Wimbledon champion, troubled from the outset by his big serve and ferocious forehand. Just when Hewitt looked to be grinding his opponent down, Brown broke serve at 5-4 to steal the set, celebrating wildly with his arms raised. The Australian tried to pump himself up after breaking serve in the opening game of the second set but Brown hit back soon after and a poor service game from Hewitt allowed the qualifier to go two sets up. Hewitt won six straight points in the third
tie-breaking, extending the match to a fourth set. But Brown quickly wrestled the momentum back, breaking twice to race to a 4-1 lead and serve out the match in two hours and 23 minutes. Brown, who spent four years earlier in his career travelling around Europe in a campervan to play tournaments, was in tears as he walked off the court. "It's going to take a while to sink in," Brown said. "I'm not normally a guy to cry, I don't really know what happened. I'm playing Lleyton Hewitt, a guy that you're watching when you're growing up.
Eugenie Bouchard of Canada plays a forehand during her ladies' singles second round match against Ana Ivanovic of Serbia on day three of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships.
LONDON: Veteran Indian star Mahesh Bhupathi and his partner Julian Knowle defeated Leonardo Mayer and Alberto Ramos to move to the second round of the men's doubles event at Wimbledon. The eighth seed Indo-Austrian pair recorded a 6-2 6-7 (5) 6-4 62 win over the unseeded Argentine-Spanish combination in two hours and 37 minutes. Bhupathi and Knowle did not face breakpoint in any of the sets except second when they dropped their serve twice. They also broke their rivals in the second set which was decided by a tiebreaker. Bhupathi and Knowle will now lock horns against American Nicholas Monroe and Germany's Simon Stadler, who had beaten debutante Indian pair of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja.

Mumbai Football Club finished eighth during the I League this season, are you satisfied with the performance of your side? We have done reasonably well but we were expecting a first six finish. I think we missed out in the last few matches. Overall it wasn’t a bad performance taking into consideration we had lot of youngsters in the team and also compared to last year’s performance.
FOOTBALL HAS
The initial months in the season saw Mumbai FC miss out on a win; did the early losses result in a mid-level finish for your club? If we had won a couple of matches in the beginning, it would have been instrumental [for the rest of the season]. Especially after the initial few matches, there was a feeling that we were going to have a really bad season. But on the way the team picked up its performance, it was really commendable.
Mumbai FC and ONGC FC finished in the mid level unlike in the earlier editions of the I-league, where Mumbai teams finished higher up in the ranks. Is the city losing its grip on the game? This is because we are playing all our home matches in Pune, which is not our home ground. It would make a lot of difference had we played in Mumbai. We missed out on 8-10 points due to lack of home support. Even the home matches feel as good as away matches. That has affected all the Mumbai teams. It is a disadvantage for us as we have to play all the 24 matches on an away basis.
I D Y E M N T N E I
You had started your playing as striker, however, this season you have moved to the ‘full-back’ position. What has brought about this change? I am a coach’s player. Even if the coach asks me to be the goal-keeper I will do so. If the coach has confidence in me in doing something then I shall do it. I started this season as a striker during the matches against Air India and Mohun Bagan, but majority of the games I played as a defender. I don’t have any hang-ups on only playing in the striker position.
The AIFF is proposing to have 16 teams this season, three of whom have been inducted. How do you see this season taking shape? There are still some controversies going on, whether to keep it on a home and away basis or keep it zone wise. It is up to the federation and the people involved. As a player we do not need back to back the matches as it takes a toll on the players. Every I League match is not easy and you need a good gap of 4-5 days [to rejuvenate] and if we can play a match in a week, this will improve the game and also cause fewer injuries. So I hope they come out with an organized schedule.
The IPL styled football league is slated during the I League break, but most of the I League clubs have raised stiff opposition to it. How do you see a new tournament coming in middle of the league, which would also clash with other tournaments? For me everything seems uncertain. Ultimately, we all want to develop Indian football and it is a collective effort and if the federation thinks that if they want to develop football without the clubs, then it won’t happen. The clubs, AIFF and IMG-R need to sit across the table and clarify doubts. IMGR hasn’t had any communication with the

There has been a tremendous delay in the construction of the Cooperage ground. Are you hoping that outfits in Mumbai get to play their matches at home? In Mumbai we have our own fan base and that would have helped us perform better. In Pune it is difficult as the stadium is outside the city whereas in Mumbai we play in the city. Also the fans who wish to come to watch the matches are not very comfortable traveling outside the city. I would want the stadium to get prepared. I have had great memories playing at the Cooperage.

The AIFF has recommended a cap on I League teams thereby bringing down to only two clubs from a city from 2015. What do you feel will be the repercussions of this move? I don’t think clubs would be very inclined in doing so. They already have their own fan following and supporters. To go to another city requires a lot of motivation and money. The situation which we are in, the federation needs to do a lot in terms of encouraging clubs and providing the best of facilities. Teams like Mahindra United and JCT Phagwara have already shut down and we don’t want more teams to follow suit. I won’t be surprised if these things happen especially as these things are forced by the AIFF then the clubs should walk out. This is not a business model for me, as the clubs are not making any money. Maybe the clubs should get the gate money, or the TV rights. Who will decide which club will stay in the city and which club will move out? So the question will be whether Churchill and Salgaocar will stay in Goa and why Sporting Clube De Goa should move out. Who will decide that?
You were with Mahindra United for five years and you have seen the club shutting down. How bad was that for Mumbai football? It was very hurtful because Mahindra United was one of the best and the most glamorous teams in the country, which has contributed a lot in raising the standard of the game in India. We won the I League and the Federation Cup and we won all the tournaments in India. There was no problem with the club and also the salaries were on time and everything was
perfect. You feel bad because the future generation will suffer.
Your expectation from Mumbai Tigers? It looks good and it has to wait for 2-3 years. It depends how they can keep themselves in 2-3 years time. They have a ground, a good coach and good management.
It has been six years with Mumbai FC. Has your stand of joining the club been vindicated? We have come a long way and we were still in the second division. I was still with the national team back then and you can say it was a risk. But we had familiar faces, as I had worked earlier with David Booth [in Mah Utd] and at the end of the day I was happy with my decision. There were many inexperienced players in the side and in the next year we went in the first division. The club has been growing since then. Your goal in your debut match in the LG Cup will be remembered a lot. How special was that moment for you? When I started playing I never thought I would play for India. Once you start getting some success, your ambitions grow and you want to do something more. When I got selected for the national camp it was a proud moment for me and my family. It has been a long journey and football has been my identity. Every moment is great and you wouldn’t forget your debut match and scoring the first goal. That was very memorable and would stay with me. It was unreal and I wasn’t prepared for it [attention]. Overnight you become the talking point of the nation from a boy coming from nowhere. I had not even played the Santosh Trophy before representing India. You got yourself grounded and keep working hard. It is not difficult to reach to the top but to stay on top is hard. I have played for India for a decade. The journey has been satisfying.

EW DELHI: A livid national hockey captain Sardar Singh said that Indian players need to work on their consistency sooner if they harbour any desire to be a potent force in the world circuit again. India lost out on a golden chance to qualify for the next year's World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands by finishing a lowly sixth in the just-concluded eightnation World League Round 3. "We didn't start well in any of the matches. We played well for 5 minutes and then allowed the opposition to dominate us for the next 10 minutes. We were inconsistent throughout the tournament. We didn't play total hockey for the entire 70 minutes in any of the matches," a fuming Sardar told PTI in an interview. The skipper was also upset with sudden dip in form of the dragflick specialists. "With Sandeep Singh, Rupinderpal Singh and V R Raghunath in the side, we were
Sardar Singh along with coach Michael Nobbs. rated as one of the strongest outfits when it comes to conversion of drag-flicks but we failed to covert chances in Rotterdam. In every match, we got 5-6 penalty corners but failed to utilise them," he sounded upset. "The entire team is very upset with the performance because
Double blow for Arthur, loses mother after sacking
MELBOURNE: "Shocked and shattered" at being sacked as coach of the Australian cricket team, Mickey Arthur also suffered a personal blow after his mother passed away following a long battle with cancer. Having been axed on Monday, Arthur was en route to South Africa via Dubai after hearing that his mother, Lynne, had breathed
her last. "It's not a nice time for us as a family, but you know, that happens as well," he told reporters. Arthur's mother died in Kimberley, in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. She had been ill for many months. He, however, admitted that he did not "see it coming". "I was really, really shocked," Arthur said.
were in high spirits going into the tournament. We all were confident of a good result. But we had a terrible start to the tournament. We needed to win the first game against Ireland but we surprisingly couldn't although we were favourites coming into the match. It severely hurt us," he said. The skipper said India played total hockey in patches throughout the tournament and it didn't help their cause. Sardar said India faltered in all departments of the game in Rotterdam and it's high time every player realise his own mistakes and work on them if they desire to be a potent force in world hockey again. "In World League surprisingly, there was a lack of co-ordination among the players. We committed small mistakes in every match and allowed out opponents to score soft goals," he said.

Conference model discussed, clubs told to send recommendations
NEW DELHI: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) heard the concerns of the I-League clubs regarding the proposed conference model for the 201314 season and asked all the representatives to send their recommendations in order to arrive at a quick decision. "The proposed Conference Model (for the 2013-14 season of the I-League) by AIFF's Emergency Committee was discussed at length. The clubs raised some concerns about the proposed model to which AIFF explained their point of view. The clubs would accordingly send their recommendations so that a decision can be taken jointly," the AIFF said in a statement. The meeting was chaired by A R Khaleel, chairman of I-League and Federation Cup committee, and attended by general secretary Kushal Das, vice-president Subrata Dutta, treasurer Hardev Jadeja, I-League CEO Sunando Dhar, representatives from all ILeague clubs and representatives from AIFF's marketing partners IMG-R. Mohun Bagan, though, was conspicuous by its absence. The proposed move to adopt a MLS-style Conference model for the next I-League season has ruffled feathers in the clubs. Under the MLS model, the league will see teams divided into two groups -- east and west conference -- with only the top four progressing to the final round, while the remainder of the clubs will fight to save themselves from the one relegation spot.
