Though Mumbai has seen an increase in the passing percentage this year, it ranks SECOND LAST in the HSC State Board results

By Yatin Ingle

I

t was a pleasant surprise for students who appeared for their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Board examinations in February 2013, as the state board declared results as per schedule. However, the city stands second last with 76.81 per cent in the overall performance in comparison with other divisions in the state. This year 9,00,000 students from across Maharashtra appeared for the HSC exams at more than a 1,00,000 examination centers. The overall performance across the state saw the score at 79.95 percent. Within the 9 divisions of the state

TOPPERS ARE FROM VILE PARLE AGAIN

After city students topped the ICSE and CBSE exams, they yet again shone bright in the HSC exams. The ICSE and CBSE toppers came from the Vile Parle suburbs of Mumbai. Now the HSC toppers in Science and Commerce also happen to hail from Vile Parle itself. After studying day and night, with hopes of standing first in the city, Sakshi Aggrawal from Sakshi Agarwal, Shruti Pimple the D.G Ruparel College, Matunga, topped the Science stream with 96.6 per cent. She told the ADC, “I hoped to be amongst the toppers and finally, I have made it to the list. It’s getting rewarded for working hard for months.” When asked about her further plans, Sakshi said “I will be pursuing a career in the engineering field.” Matching up for the Commerce stream, Shruti Pimple from the Narsee Monjee College, Vile Parle, has topped the list with 93 per cent. Shruti intends to pursue her Chartered Accountancy (CA).

escape from the scene. The accused ingeniously designed a makeshift spear using a scissor, and had also carried home made crude bombs to scare the victims. The police found the bombs at the spot, while a CCTV camera inside the small tailoring unit in Wadala West captured the entire drama. The gory incident took place late on Wednesday night around 11 pm when the accused, Gyansingh Thakur, reached the tailoring unit at Pramod Nagar slums with one of the victims, Asmat Shaikh alias Maaz. The other victim, Shahbaz Ahmad Shaikh alias Nhai, was present there with three other tailors. board, the Konkan division was the highest scoring division with 85.55 passing per cent; whereas Aurangabad with 85.26 and Kolhapur with 84.14, were the other two highest scores in the passing percentages. Though the Mumbai Division had a hike of around 6 per cent, with 76.81 percent, it unfortunately stands second last in comparison with other divisions. The Mumbai division this year,

including Thane and Raigad, had a fair passing. Thane scored a passing percentage of 76.43, Raigad 79.63, Greater Mumbai 75.08, Mumbai suburb 77.51, making it a total average passing percentage of 76.81 for the overall Mumbai division. ICICI Lombard survey shows 85% of the people reason out the urge to try, while 78% think quitting is matter of will power. Celebrities and advertisements influence smoking to an extent By A Staff Reporter

R

ecently conducted ‘ICICI Lombard Smoking Habits 2013’ survey revealed several trends and patterns about smoking in the Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata. More than 900 habitual smokers were a part of this survey out which 234 were from Mumbai, 229 were from Delhi, 225 were from Kolkata and 226 were from Bangalore. It was found out that that in Mumbai, 32 per cent of the respondents smoke seven to ten cigarettes per day and

that the top most reasons for people to have started smoking was friends and peers (85%), the urge to try and explore (22%) and following celebrities in films and advertisements. Also, 21% of women in Mumbai are influenced by celebrities in films and advertisements and it was one of the major factors to have prompted them to start smoking. The tendency to ignore the harmful effects of smoking on our health is also prevalent suggests the findings of the survey. 71% of Mumbaikars believe that if

they smoke within limits they wouldn’t have any health issues, 12% say that smoking won’t affect their health, 9% don’t care about their health and 8% feel that they are too addicted to quit smoking. The survey also looked at the aspect of inclination to quit smoking and there too there isn’t much to be happy

about because according to the survey, 35% of Mumbaikars have not thought about quitting smoking, and 8% aren’t inclined to quit. 52% of the respondents from Mumbai said they are thinking about quitting and only 6% are determined to quit smoking. According to Shankar

SPECIAL REPORT

S

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2013

hoping to get some relief if the surrogacy rules are relaxed. However, much to their disappointment, Dr. R S Sharma, Deputy Director General (Senior Grade), ICMR said, “Although a Delhi High Court judgment has decriminalized homo sexuality, it has not legalized it. The judgment is related to a solitary case and it is not general one.”

By Raju Vernekar

URROGACY has been a ray of hope for couples with fertility problems. And for foreign nationals wanting to opt for the procedure to complete their families, India is the best option. Cost is definitely an issue here, for what may cost them around $50,000 to $100,000 in the US, costs only around $25,000 here. Sensing the rise in demand for surrogacy in India, especially by foreign nationals and the possible legal hassles that surrogacy arrangements might give rise to, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) imposed certain restrictions on surrogacy arrangements from December 2012. But the restrictions seem to go against popular opinion within the medical fraternity and has garnered outcry from couples, compelling the MHA to reconsider the regulations. In the meanwhile, the Union Health Ministry, in consultation with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has drafted the ‘Regulation of Surrogacy in India - Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Bill’ which seeks to regulate the “wombs-for-rent” issue. The bill is expected to be tabled in the ensuing monsoon session of the Parliament. Dr. Manish Banker, President, Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR), said, “The draft committee of ICMR and MHA recently had a joint meeting in which certain suggestions were made about relaxing the guidelines a bit. However, the MHA is yet to make changes in the guidelines.”

Unduly restrictive As per the rules circulated to Indian embassies, foreign couples seeking to enter into a surrogacy arrangement in India must be “men and women (who) are duly married and the marriage should be sustained at least for two years”. The special emphasis on “men and women” seems to be an attempt to keep gay couples out of the ambit of surrogacy itself. Besides, those wanting to commission surrogacy should seek medical visas and should not enter India on tourist visas. The directive also stated that the visa application must mention whether the couple’s home country recognizes surrogacy and gives an assurance that the country will permit the entry of the child born from an Indian surrogate as there have been several cases of babies born out of cross-border surrogacy being trapped in citizenship limbo because their parents’ countries refused to grant them passports.

The repercussions… Thanks to the restrictions on surrogacy arrangements, many infertility clinics across the country are in a fix as frozen embryos of couples are waiting to be implanted as per earlier agreements. Dr Nayna Patel, Chief of Akanksha Fertility Clinic, Anand, Gujarat, finds the requirement of two years sustained marriage “ridiculous”. “What if a woman gets married at the age of 39 years and finds it difficult to conceive? What if her eggs get depleted by the time she is 41 years old,” questions

Dr. Patel. “These new regulations are portraying India in a bad light. We are being laughed at. When, for different types of treatments, foreigners find India to be a safe haven, it is wrong to put restrictions only on surrogacy. In my clinic, three to four cases related to heterogeneous Indian couples are pending. We hope that these rules will be relaxed soon,” she added. Dr. Duru Shah, Scientific Director, Gynaec World, assisted fertility unit at Kemps Corner in Mumbai, declared, “The

guidelines are discriminatory as a single parent from outside India is not allowed to opt for surrogacy whereas the ICMR rules allow an Indian single parent, man or woman, to do so. This move might be seen as an attempt to keep gay couples from coming to India for surrogacy as gay marriages are not legal in our country. We don’t know this for sure though. The reason behind this discrimination is not clear.” “Guidelines and monitoring are essential,” said Dr. Shah, “But they have to be planned and be announced in a way that does not leave people in limbo. There are several questions that are unanswered. For instance, we don’t know if we can send back the single parent embryos of foreign nationals that we have with us. There are embryos ready to be transplanted but because of the recent guidelines, we don’t know how to go ahead. We need more clarity, otherwise things would be a mess,” she added.

We are couples too… In view of the recent Delhi High Court judgment that decriminalizes homosexuality, gay couples are also

CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS SURROGACY IN INDIA a) Approximate number of cases of pregnancies handled through surrogate mothers per year Delhi 300 Gujarat 300 Hyderabad 100 Bangalore 50 Mumbai 25 b) Intending parents from all over the world: Australia, UK, Brazil, USA, Canada, Scotland, Israel, Sweden, Ireland, Spain, Japan, Norway, Sweden, Argentina, Ecuador, India, Cuba, Romania, South Africa c) First surrogacy pregnancy in India: June 23, 1994 (Chennai) d) Surrogacy legalized by Supreme Court in 2002

Economics of surrogacy The commercial surrogacy industry flourished ever since the procedure was recognized in 2002 and now it has an annual turnover of Rs. 200 crore with over 1200 infertility clinics all over the country, including cities like Delhi, Gujarat and Hyderabad. These clinics have been hiring surrogate mothers for nine months and paying them an amount between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.50 lakh. They are also provided with accommodation during pregnancy.

Where does Mumbai stand? In Mumbai, well known hospitals like Dr. L.H Hiranandani, Lilavati, Jaslok, Fortis, and Breach Candy also deal with surrogacy cases. But the number of cases, by and large, are limited. An official from Fortis Hospital said, “We are handling very few cases of surrogacy of heterogeneous couples, referred to us by clinics.” It seems that most of the clinics in Mumbai are engaged in counseling of patients. “The proposed ART bill is welcome step since it would regulate the surrogacy cases,” said Dr. Niranjan Chavan, Chief of the Chavan Maternity and Nursing Home, Andheri.

Highlights of the Bill 1) Surrogacy shall not be available to “patients for whom it would normally be possible to carry a baby to term” 2) Surrogacy contracts shall be legally enforceable 3) Married women need their husband’s consent in order to become a surrogate 4) Surrogates shall not undergo embryo transfer more than three times for the same couple. Also, she cannot give more than five live births, including her own children 5) A woman acting as a surrogate mother in India cannot be less than 21 years or over 35 years 6) Egg donor identities shall remain strictly confidential 7) There shall be a detailed accreditation process for fertility clinics and gamete donor banks 8) The Department of Health Research shall establish and manage a “national ART registry”. Besides, national and state advisory boards comprising health department workers, industry representatives, scientists, and other civil society members would be formed 9) The Bill mandates the appointment of a local guardian in case of surrogacy arrangements where the intended couple is staying outside India. This local guardian will be legally obliged to take delivery of the child born of the surrogacy arrangement if the intended couple does not do so.

The legislation disqualifies foreign and domestic gay couples, as well as individuals or couples from countries such as the UK, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and Sweden which prohibit all forms of surrogacy. ICMR estimates that 15% of couples around the world are infertile, making infertility one of the most prevalent medical problems. Reproductive tourism is a winwin situation for everybody; the people who cannot conceive get a child and a surrogate earns about a tidy sum of money for carrying the baby for nine months.

ongress seems to be taking no chances for the June 2nd bye-election to the Yavatmal assembly seat. It was little wonder then that Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday addressed election rally in Yavatmal. Congress nominee Nandini Deshmukh-Parvekar, wife of late sitting MLA Nilesh Parwekar is pitted against BJPs former MLA Madan Yerawar. The assembly bye-election has been necessitated due to the demise of Nilesh Parvekar in a car accident at Ladkhed near Yavatmal on January 27. Late Nilesh Parvekar was considered to be the acolyte of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and part of his Rahul brigade. Congress leaders MPCC president Manikrao Thakare and Chavan swung into action to douse potential rebellion by

late Parvekar’s relative Yogesh who was made to withdraw his candidature from the poll fray. However, the Congress is still weary of the support of its ally the NCP. The Congress leadership here feels that the NCP cadres are secretly supporting Yerawar. A loss here could well be seen as a set back for the Congress in its traditional bastion of Vidarbha. In the 2009 assembly elections, Parwekar had defeated his nearest seasoned BJP MLA Madan Yerawar by a margin of 19,875 votes. The polling here will be held on June 2nd and counting of votes will be held on June 5th. There are 10 candidates in the fray which includes 5 Independents and three candidates from statelevel recognized political parties. There are a total of 3, 21,625 voters, which includes 1, 66,232 male, 1, 55,239 female and 154 service voters.

The decision was taken as a majority of teachers were on strike. The Higher Secondary Board (HSC) examination concluded on March 26, and from the very next day, all staff members attached to Mumbai division office at Vashi worked without a break. “Soon after the examination process started, around 185 staffers, including the female staff, attached to the Vashi division office worked till late in the night every day,” said Laxmikanth Pandey, chairman, Mumbai

However, teachers were given only 25 answer sheets a day to evaluate, as per the rule. “The teachers were not given more than 25 answer sheets for assessment. But they had to come everyday to assess answer sheets,” said Pandey. The work after assessment of answer sheets happens to be the most important part of the job, and that is where the non-teaching staff delivered their best. “After evaluation process ended, staff members stayed on till 9 pm in the office to ensure results came on time,” said Pandey, who explained that most voluntarily accepted the challenge and turned up even on Sundays, and festival holidays.

“Fame is the inheritance not of the dead, but of the living. It is we who look back with lofty pride to the great names of antiquity.” — William Hazlitt

Names Matter T

HE recent incident involving city doctor Rustam Sonawala, accused of rape by a patient he was reportedly treating for tuberculosis, is unfolding as a case study in how important it is to get one’s facts right before going into print. The incident itself allegedly took place on May 19, and to date Dr Sonawala has not been arrested. In fact, on Wednesday, the Bombay High Court directed the police not to arrest him till his application seeking bail was heard on June 11. This was after the Sessions Court rejected a similar application even though the doctor said he was willing to submit blood and semen samples to the police. For some reason, this most elementary of investigations had not been done till Wednesday, though by the time this appears in print, the procedure may have been completed. Nor is it clear whether the rape was established in an examination of the woman through the presence of semen on her clothing or inside her. While both parties seem to have extra-vociferous supporters, the media has further muddied the waters by jumping into the fray. Sometimes they seem to be reporting from one side, sometimes the other, but seldom, as should happen in the best journalism practices handbook, are both sides adequately balanced. On the question of how the doctor spells his very name, for instance. Soonawala, which sent everyone literally into a Twitter (at least initially) or the more prosaic, less-well-known Sonawala. Why does the Aam Aadmi Party want to hang, draw and quarter him unequivocally and why do they think their own investigations have been carried out perfectly, when the other side makes a similar claim for itself. In all this, what is the role of the police – guardians of the law or puppets “knee jerking” to howls of outrage and demands for action from both sides? Since December 16, when the Delhi gang rape took place, the issue has been highlighted uniformly by the media across platforms. At times, so densely thick have been the stories of rapes on victims ranging from babies to old women, that one would be forgiven for assuming it is a national pastime. But it is required. The downside is that, as shock value is worn off the issue through unceasing repetition, the careful sifting of fact from fiction from assumption begins to suffer. Then comes loss of interest and the jump to the new object of interest. It would be a pity to let that happen in this case, which is why we think it is time to step back, let perspective in and take a hard look at the facts on the ground. After all, names ride on the outcome.

HE general elections in Pakistan have naturally aroused great interest in the Indian media, though the reaction has been one of caution. The Times of India (May 15) said “there is no denying that Nawaz Sharif’s victory…. strengthens democracy” in Pakistan “and raises hopes of a new Indo-Pak détente”. The paper pointed out that “Sharif’s triumph was underpinned by a large voter turnout” that showed “he enjoys the mandate to embark upon an ambitious bilateral engagement process”. Noting that though Sharif has pitched for normalisation of India-Pakistan relations, it warned that “there is no telling how the equation between the military and the newly-elected civilian government will play out in the months ahead”. Giving the background to past relationships the paper said, “New Delhi would do well to wait and watch if Sharif can restore civilian supremacy in Pakistan and consolidate the proponents of peace in that country.”

India should “wait to see that Sharif acts on his words”. Till he does so, said the paper, India” must continue fortifying its fences, not dismantling them”. Deccan Herald (May 13) noted that Pakistan’s voters “have punished the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) for its performance.” Sharif, it said “has inherited a poisonous chalice” and “the security situation (in Pakistan) has been worse with bombings and shootings becoming a daily affair.” Reminding that “the military will watch how Sharif treats the former Army chief and his policies towards India, Afghanistan and the US among others,” the paper said “of impor-

Civilian government The Hindu (May 13) felt that the Pakistan election is ‘historic’ in that it has seen “a transition from one civilian government to another for the first time in its 65 year existence”. Pointing out that the agenda of Sharif’s party is “Centre-right”, similar to Imran Khan’s “but offering more details and stability”, the paper said it has still “clearly touched a chord in a population that is increasingly suspicious of the US, but also knows the country cannot live in isolation.” Where Sharif gives most hope, the paper added, “is in his strong and unambiguous articulation of better IndiaPakistan relations, though this will depend on his stated determination to correct the civilmilitary imbalance and reclaim the national agenda from the security establishment.” The New Indian Express (May 13) while admiring Sharif’s “remarkable come-back” has suggested that “New Delhi will do well to wait and see if his (Sharif’s) actions match his words.” Sounding a little sceptical, the paper pointed out what happened in 1999 when preparations for the Kargil operations were on, and said “even in the recent elections, Sharif’s party was allied with the Lashkar-eJhangvi” and had cosy relationship with Islamists.” In conclusion the paper said “the UPA government might find it difficult to resist the temptation of reviving its pursuit of a borderless world, now that Pakistan has a strong civilian government, but warned that

The DNA (May 13) said “India should be happy at Nawaz Sharif’s spectacular victory” and “will now engage with a democratically elected government to try and resolve all outstanding issues involving the two countries.” Pakistan, said the paper, “should now turn towards India for obvious reasons” and “a stable and prosperous Pakistan is in India’s interests.” It said: “A superior economy, India can provide a cure to a moribund Pakistani economy grappling with dwindling foreign reserves, balance of payment crisis, weakening exchange rate, fiscal mismanagement and liquidity crisis.” Furthermore it said that “though the Pakistani Army continues to be a powerful entity and a threat to democracy, its role can be limited if both New Delhi and Islamabad can devise ways and means to conduct their affairs without allowing the army to interfere.” The big question, of course, is how the Army will act and how the United States will perceive Sharif as he seeks to make special efforts to befriend India.

Blunt report This is where a remarkably blunt report in The Telegraph (May 12) makes must reading. According to its correspondent, K.P. Nayar, “the guardians of American strategic assets M.V. Kamath worldwide know that free and fair elections in countries like Pakistan go against Washingtance to India, however, is whether he will act ton’s interests and “Pakistan is so central to on anti-terrorist groups based in Pakistan.” America’s global fight against terror that Hindustan Times (May 12) said that “the nothing short of a total client relationship very act of being held was enough to make with Washington will suit US interests and Pakistan’s general elections a historic event” Sharif’s mandate, if he comes to power, may and “that it led to a record turnout in the not allow such a relationship.” According to sights of Tehreek-e-Taliban guns makes it a Nayar, US Secretary of State John Kerry has memorable act of national courage.” Won- been courting current Pakistan’s army chief dering what Sharif will do with this historic General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani “as if he was victory, the paper said “India has genuine the head of state or government in Islamreason to be pleased.” The paper said that abad;” Kayani is due to retire in November “India should not expect a Kashmir settle- and it will be interesting to see who will sucment or the arrest of Hafeez Saeed in a few ceed him if, in the first instance, he is willing months’ time” and stated that what India can to retire.” The point is that the United States hope for is a government that will try and does not want a democratic government in strengthen civilian institutions at the expense Pakistan but only a servile state which will of the Army, that will address the structural constantly kow-tow to Washington and obey failures of the Pakistan economy and a its orders. ‘What the world wants is character’ Was it ever in the history of the world that

any great work was done by the rich? It is the heart and the brain that do it ever and ever and not the purse. We would do nothing ourselves and would scoff at others who try to do something — this is the bane that has brought about our downfall as a nation. Want of sympathy and lack of energy are at the root of all misery, and you must therefore give these two up. He who is the servant of all is their true master. He never becomes a leader in whose love there is a consideration of high or low. He whose love knows no end, and never stops to consider high or low, has the whole world lying at his feet. Religions of the world have become lifeless mockeries. What the world wants is character. The world is in need of those whose life is one burning love, selfless. That love will make every word tell like thunderbolt. I want each one of my children to be a

hundred times greater than I could ever be. Everyone of you must be a giant — must, that is my word. Obedience, readiness, and love for the cause — if you have these three, nothing can hold you back. Three things are necessary to make every man great, every nation great: — Conviction of the powers of goodness.

MATTER & SPIRIT — Absence of jealousy and suspicion. — Helping all who are trying to be and do good. I call him a traitor who, having been educated, nursed in luxury by the heart’s blood of the downtrodden millions of toiling poor, never even takes a thought for them. Where, in what period of history your rich men, noblemen, your priests and potentates took any thought for the poor — the grinding of whose faces is the very life -- blood of their

power? Who thinks of raising these sunken downtrodden millions? A few thousand graduates do not make a nation, a few rich men do not make a nation. True, our opportunities are less, but still there is enough to feed and clothe and made 300 millions more comfortable, nay, luxurious. Perfect sincerity, holiness, gigantic intellect, and an all-conquering will. Let only a handful of men work with these, and the whole world will be revolutionised. Truth alone triumphs, not untruth. Through truth alone lies the way to Devayana (the way to the gods). Those who think that a little sugar-coating of untruth helps the spread of truth are mistaken and will find in the long run that a single drop of poison poisons the whole mass. . . The man who is pure, and who dares, does all things. — Swami Vivekananda

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2013

Sports ministry should take over BCCI WITH the alleged involvement of the son-in-law of the Big Boss of BCCI, the time has definitely come to do away with this ‘Board for Commercialisation of Cricket in India’ and leave the administration of the country’s cricket to the ministry of sports. It does not need to be said again that the ‘Imperial Pompous League’ (IPL) has to be discontinued. One gets the impression that the apex court did not want to stop it till now. But now that the present edition is over and all the skeletons have stumbled out of the cupboards the SC can put an end to this IPL tamasha. The BCCI’s functioning had always left a lot to be desired—one of its past presidents ran into a lot of legal problems, the selections of players for Team India were never received well, its cricket calendars had always been cramped urealistically with far too many matches and so on. Meanwhile, as per the report ‘Shocker: CSK bag IPL Fair Play Award’ (ADC, May 28). It is indeed shocking that the IPL Fair Play Award was given to the Chennai Super Kings team which is owned by the BCCI boss and also by his son-in-law. Especially in the light of the recent revelations, either this award should have been withheld this year or awarded to the Mumbai Indians who played it fair right through the tournament without giving room to any type of ‘fixing’. — Dr. V. Subramanyan, Thane

IN all this IPL, fixing, betting hullabaloo there is one question that no one is asking or rather does not want to ask. How come a body registered under a law like your own housing society is able to call itself a Board for Control of Cricket in India and derive the power to run and control cricket in this country? Is there a winkwink arrangement with the government? And what right has the media to talk about fixing when it is fixing the non-entry of FDI in media with the Government?

mits political leaders with several exceptional positions that could be manoeuvred and held together. Rajiv Shukla is shielding Srinivasan because of the gluttony of the position that he visions for himself as BCCI chief. Political parties remain cohesive for the cause to bond to power and they are prepared to crouch to any level to accomplish their end of hoodwinking and bossing the people of the country. We must go for no politics in sport.

POLITICAL heavyweights are so silent on Srinivasan since it is the political brotherhood which keeps them together for the gluttony of recognition, influence and position. Our democratic system per-

eters...make hell of a lot of money. And, we the fans and the people pay for the tickets, watch these matches and enjoy their ‘games’ (pun intended!). All in all...we waste our time...while these crooks make lakhs and crores! Cricket—no more a “gentleman’s game” but has become “the game of crooks and criminals”. (Sorry dear Mr.Bernard Shaw—they don’t deserve even to be called as “fools”) Incidentally, cricket bodies are

ies and people who are involved in harmless betting which can be utilised elsewhere. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai

SACHIN, the living cricket legend announced on TV that he had now played his last Indian T20 league match. Incidentally, Mumbai Indians by a slender margin of 23 runs emerged winners of the sixth edition of the Indian Premier League at a jam-packed Eden Gardens. A sparkling 60 not out by K. Pollard, which was made up of 7x4 and 3x6 brought joy for Mumbaikers by and large. — Nobert B.J. Pereira, Mazagon

OUTRAGEOUS: How come a body registered under a law like a housing society is able to call itself a Board for Control of Cricket in India and derive the power to run and control cricket in this country? — K.V. Raman, Malad

APROPOS ‘Rauf fixed?’ (ADC, May 29), it is indeed further frustrating to learn that Asad Rauf, the Pakistani umpire is involved in the IPL betting net. Being condemned by this shameful act he has already lost his job for the ICC’s champion’s trophy tournament. Thus the credibility of the IPL has worn thin further. I was dumbfounded while I had learnt that Vindoo Dara Singh is headlong involved in this betting racket. It is a tragic case of “an unworthy son of a worthy father.“ We also observed that Rauf was involved in certain illicit relations with a Mumbai based model girl earlier. The Mumbai crime branch would reveal further about Rauf’s cricket betting involvement and who knows how many more worms would spill out of the cans . — Bikram Banerjea, Mumbai

A GREAT friend of mine who had functioned as a known umpire in the national cricket matches has described the BCCI as ‘Bookies Control Cricket in India’. This seems to be very apt today! We, cricket fans are no doubt fools. These officials of cricket bodies, bookies and even crick-

MU’s a mockery of education THIS is with reference to your editpiece ‘MU rolling downhill’ (ADC, May 30). It is sad to see the Mumbai University sliding from bad to worse without any sign of things improving at all and the tallying mistake pointed out in your edition dt. May 29—‘27+13=31’ cannot be allowed to be committed even in schools. Such gross mistakes have been happening only in recent years and one of the reasons may be the stressed condition in which the head of the institution has been DOWNSWING: The once prestigious working for the last three years or so Mumbai varsity has been plagued with after his appointment was chal- controversies time and again, even more lenged in the high court by one of frequently in recent times.

THIS has refers to your editorial ‘Illegal cricket betting can not be stopped’(ADC, May 29). You have rightly hit the nail on the head. Beside four primitive urges—food sex, sleep and self preservation, gambling has always fascinated human beings. Wisest way is to legalise betting as it would not only help generate revenue for govt. but will save habitual gamblers from falling prey to cheats and fraudsters. By legalising betting, underworld which plays a very important role in this game will be marginalised to a great extent. Govt. must change the laws and make betting legal as the present law is needlessly making criminals out of ordinary citizens with betting streak. Moreover, betting in racecourses are legally done then why discriminate between one sport and another. England the Mecca of cricket, has long since legalised betting and there are hardly any cases of betting money used to throw matches. Then why waste public resources and time of police to chase bookthe applicants for the post. If that be so, it will be good if he puts this in the backburner and gets on with his job with care. A former Pro-Vice Chancellor has commented that the examination officials do not attach any sanctity to the examination work and so tend to do a careless job. There is a lot of truth in what he has said and it is high time therefore that the university pulls up its socks and does its work duties diligently considering that the future of lakhs of students which is at stake. — Dr. V. THE latest revelations stumbling out from the IPL scam make it clear that some tough questions need to be asked and some bold steps need to be taken. No longer can the IPL get ‘back to normal’, nor can the BCCI continue to insist that it is the only a case of three rotten eggs who should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of the IPL tournament. What is at stake now is the reputation of the BCCI under useless, cheat, corrupt and inefficient chief N Srinivasan. India need to separate the BCCI from IPL. Having BCCI officials holding stakes in IPL franchises hurts cricket and its millions of fans and to save the game BCCI and IPL must be separated completely or it is better option is to scrapped the IPL permanently. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

AS the crackdown on bookies came in open and the involvement of players taking up an aerial route just like that of Gayle’s sixes, the game of cricket has brought disrepute to the country. In 80 years of International cricket, we have not achieved much while playing overseas matches but withing India we are the Home Tigers and that is proved beyond doubt as we try to fix even IPL matches to win the coveted trophy. Lies, sleaze and deceit all seen the gentleman’s game of cricket nose diving to a very low level in India. Professional English players did not turn up for the IPL Tamasha but would tack in Chhattisgarh, the Congress wants the CM to resign. OF But, by using the same LETTER THE DAY yardstick, who should have quit in the first week of Nov. 1984, consequent to the inhuman massacre of 3,000 Sikhs in New Delhi, if law and order is treated to be a concurrent/state subject? — Jorhat Singh, Kandivli

like to play test match cricket at home. Both Bangladeshis and Pakistanis were ignored for auctions as they fix matches at the International level. But now our IPL players go overhead, fix matches to earn lakhs rupees after being auctioned for a huge amount in the beginning. Now BCCI is in the bad books of cricket fans and the wickets are tumbling daily. — C.K. Subramaniam, Sanpada

INDIAN Premier League (IPL) is being currently played by Indians and foreign players. This was the 6th IPL played in our country. If you see a corporate office where the company is listed in Bombay Stock Exchange or any other Exchange where the company’s shares are traded and many shareholders have taken the shares. In this situation every company formulates an ‘Insider Trading Code’ for the company’s officials that prevents them from trading in the market for their own shareholding of company. If such a code is in place then nobody will have the guts to leak the important decisions of the company. I would suggest BCCI has a similar code for players, owners, Sponsors, coaches and every other members of teams who play in the IPL to keep them in check. — Murugesh Iyer, Thane

CATCHING the culprits is in the ambit of the ACSU as they prepare season after season to prepare for unearthing match fixing scandals. They work day and night to come out with concrete plans to book erring players and bookies assisting them to fix matches. The ACSU’s duty usually begins between one and two months before the tournament. In addition to carrying out reconnaissance at every venue, one of the initial exercises the ACSU officers carry out, as part of the awareness programme, is to impart education to players on the history of corruption in cricket. They are then told how the modus operandi of the bookies, how they usually lure and groom players, etc. After the spotfixing scandal, the BCCI decided to appoint an extra vigilance officer who will travel with every team. The turn of events in IPL 6, which led to the arrest of players and bookies needs to be give prime importance in the MBA course just like that of the dubbawallahs in Mumbai streets who carry lunch in a very planned manner. — Calicut Krishnan Ramani, Nerul

states like Rajasthan, Himachal and Karnataka. But fact is that the people voted against the scam ridden, weak state govt. It was BJP’s loss and Congress’ gain. People had not voted for Congress; cross voting made it an easy win for Congress. In all spheres, we can see there are scams, molestations and corruption. The law is weak for the upper section, but so strong for the weaker section. Can we expect any UPA or a Congress leader to get rigorous imprisonment for his/her misdeeds or scams? People will show their anger in Parliament election in 2014. Hope for the best, but till that time, be ready for the worst. — K.V. Satyamurty, Mumbai

>> Their clutches are worth picking up and we liked their striped collection

andbag brand Lulu Australia has set up shop in India and they have launched their first outlet on Linking Road in Santacruz. The store is small, but the placement of the handbags along the walls ensures that lack of space isn’t a problem here. The store manager told us that their bags are aimed at the younger crowd and so they have used vibrant colours. They certainly didn’t have to tell us that because the moment we entered Lulu, we were bombarded with bright hues! From oversized handbags, laptop bags and iPad cases, to classy clutches and cute little coin purses, Lulu has it all. When it comes to design, you will find that an image of a woman standing in front of the Eiffel Tower is used a lot. It looked particularly good on a shiny, white, over-sized bag that was priced at `5,495. However, the image is repeated on so many of their products that the novelty wears off and there’s a high chance that you and a few of your friends will have the same print. Another design that you’ll find in plenty at Lulu is the flower motif. The designs are quite subtle and are suitable for you if you’re going for an understated look. Other designs include stripes — a black and white striped clutch (`2,795) particularly caught my eye for its classy design. However, a few things at Lulu didn’t impress me, including the lack of variety. Don’t get me wrong; at first glance, with the plethora of colours, you might feel as though they have a lot to offer. But, when you repeatedly come across the Eiffel Tower design, stripes and flower motifs, you realise that it can get quite repetitive. Lulu Australia is not the cheapest store to shop at, but it is not the most expensive either. You might find what you’re looking for or come away disappointed. But, do check it out.

VINOTHERAPY AT SAKASTI Sakasti Skinic, a skin clinic in Bandra, recently introduced a segment of organic wine facials. Priyanka Singh tried one and gives you her verdict

I visited Bandra’s Sakasti Skinic to check out the new range of organic wine facials. Their repertoire in this category includes five varieties: Clear wine grapefruit facial, Strawberry wine facial, Pink blush wine facial, Puro white wine facial and Dark chocolate wine facial. Before my facial, I had to answer several lifestyle and skin related questions, after which I met the founder and cosmetologist of Sakasti, Sujata Naik. After observing my skin and going through my answers, she asked me the ultimate question, “How do you want your skin to look?” Without a blink I said healthy and bright, as my skin is quite dull. She suggested a combination of Clear wine grapefruit facial and Puro white wine facial, as my skin is semi-dry (I have combination skin) and young (I’m in my early 20s). The other facials were more moisturising in nature and meant for mature skin. Before starting off, I was served white wine in a shot glass

Where 7 Mamta Apts, 183, Waterfield Road, Above Lagerbay, Bandra (W) contact 9920189058 price `3,500 (for any organic wine facial)

with cheese and chocolate to accompany it. The facial is a seven step process that includes cleansing, toning, exfoliation, masque application, a massage, serum application and the use of sunscreen at the end. The facial consists of white wine mixed with ingredients such as stone crop, shea butter, paprika, cinnamon, Hungarian thermal mud, grapefruit, cucumber, green tea and calendula oil. White wine is used to tone, which helps cure infections thanks to its anti-oxidant properties. Unlike other chemical treatments, each mixture applied on my face was refreshing and didn’t have overpowering scents. The exfoliation was done without steam, which removed my blackheads and whiteheads, but was slightly painful. Post exfoliation, the pink grapefruit, Kaolin clay and grapefruit seed mask hydrated my parched skin. A gauze soaked in white wine was then used to cover my face, followed by a 15-minute massage. The `3,500 facial lasts for 60 minutes. Sujata told me that the effects would show after 48 hours. After two days, my skin looked healthier, hydrated and brighter. While the facial might be a bit steep, opt for it once in two months as the after-effects left me very impressed.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2013

>> Anton Zaslavski, a,k.a. Zedd, will be performing in Mumbai on June 2

Glynda Alves gets talking to electronic music maker Zedd about his weekend show at Pleasuredome at The Lalit

E

lectronic music fans get ready to dance this Sunday as Pleasuredome at The Lalit brings Zedd to India for the first time. You might not have heard of him, but you’ve definitely heard his music as he’s worked with big stars such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia, Dr. Dre, The Black Eyed Peas and many other artists. He’s currently producing Lady Gaga’s upcoming album, Artpop. His track Clarity has been playing on loop on my music player all week and for electronic music fans, this show is a must-attend. We get chatting with him to find out about his music and his first Mumbai gig. How did you get started in the music industry? I grew up in a musical family and music was a part of everyday life for me. In fact, my parents started teaching me how to play the piano at the age of three. However, like any other teenager, I soon wanted to do my own thing. I decided I wanted to play drums and started a band with my brother. We started with rock music and then went into metal and hardcore. At just 23, you’ve worked with some of the biggest artists of today. How does it feel? It feels awesome! Also, I think the most important thing nowadays in electronic music is to be different. Especially now, as it is way easier to make electronic music. But, what I realised early on is that there is a huge lack of musicality in the genre. While a lot of people might make good sounds, most don’t understand how instruments, harmonies, melodies and notes work together. There is no soul in a lot of music. I like to create and compose ‘music’ and I decided to combine that with this electronic sound that I really like. I just made that my style — to bring harmonies that you wouldn’t usually hear in electronic music. And that is my way to sound different.

however, that collaborations have been difficult, but that’s mostly been outside of Zedd, when I’ve produced for pop stars and when people don’t appreciate that the value of the music is just as important as the vocals in a song. Which do you prefer — working with a known star or someone lesser known? Well, I love working with Skrillex and today he is one of my best friends and one of my biggest inspirations musically. How I got in touch with him is actually an interesting story. I saw a post on Facebook about him and when I checked his music out, it sounded similar to a song I was working on. And it was great to connect with someone who had the same ideas about music as I did. I sent him a link of my music with a message saying, “Hey, I really like your music, and you’re very different from the rest and so am I.” It was an instant connection and he went on to play that song at a gig of his an hour later! We’ve been friends ever since. What do you think is more important — the beat or the lyrics? Well, if the beat and the compilations are good, then the lyrics automatically gets its mileage! What can fans expect from your Mumbai gig? A lot of interesting and fresh music and look out for my compilations. Rest, wait and watch! Are you excited about the show? I don’t think I am in a position to expect anything from the Indian crowd right now, since I don’t know much about the country and the music scene here. I hope to understand which songs will work best, so that I can ensure a good time.

Are you familiar with any Indian musicians? I really haven’t heard many Indian musicians honestly. I am looking forward to hearing some Which artist do you enjoy working with the Indian music during my visit. If I come across an most? Also, who is the most difficult? The

MuMbai to Goa

driving force Want a long drive devoid of the traffic and chaos that we’re so used to? Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests packing a road trip in with your vacation and gives you the best road trips to plan in India >> If you want a long and adventurous journey then you can opt for a road trip from Delhi to Leh (left) which will be a twoday long drive. However, if you are looking something closer home, then a trip from Mumbai to Goa will also not disappoint you

Most people take a bus or train to Goa, but driving or riding down is a different journey altogether. Visiting Goa is common, but since you’re going to anyway, why not do it in the best way possible? Remember to head there in the cooler months and avoid driving during the monsoon. The trip along the NH17 (albeit with slight bumps along the way) is a thrilling experience, especially negotiating the winding turns. Make sure your car is well maintained to avoid any sandy road accidents once you reach. You’ll see coconut trees, plantations and an abundance of mountains and misty skies, especially early morning. Slow down near the villages and soak up the sights and sounds — it’s all worth it! Get Geared up: The trip takes up to 15 hours with pit stops and is around 500 km away from the city.

delhi to leh This one is for the more adventurous, since it not only takes longer, it’s also a little more challenging because of the high altitude and winding roads. Your first stop itself is Manali, but after soaking up the sights at the hill station, you’ll reach the beautiful Rohtang Pass and the desert mountain valley (Spiti) that is literally the land between Tibet and India. Stop often and don’t miss the town Keylong or a chance to camp near Darcha. Make an overnight stop there before you head towards the breathtaking Leh. This trip needs to be planned carefully as the road is not open all year round, so plan your trip between June and November. Get Geared up: The trip will take you around two days through Manali, driving up to 11 hours to each place, but don’t hurry it or you’ll miss some of the exquisite sights.

banGalore to CoorG Coorg is so beautiful, that a visit is a must. This road trip is filled with dangerously winding roads, so we suggest leaving early in the morning to avoid heavy traffic. There may not be too many eateries on the way initially, so carry all your essentials with you and wait till the weather cools down a bit till

you make the trip. It’s not advisable to do this journey overnight. Once you’re on your way, don’t spend all your time cooped up inside an air conditioned car because there’s a lot to see. Stop at the town Madikeri (head to Rajah’s seat nearby to watch the sunset), and linger at Tibetan camp (now a settlement) Bylakuppe for some great food and culture experiences. You can also visit the Dhubare Elephant Training Camp and Abbey Falls. Get Geared up: Around 6 hours long, this is a great road trip for those who like making a lot of pit stops, are short on time and money, but still want an amazing experience.

Chennai to KanyaKuMari This beautiful trip will take you along the Coromandel Coast and past Pondicherry, which is simply breathtaking. Driving to Kanyakumari gives you a longer distance to travel and a lot of sights and sounds to soak up. From the church in Pondicherry to the backwaters at Chunnambar where you can see a lot of heritage sights, dive into some culture in Pondicherry and then relax along the eight-hour scenic drive to the even more beautiful, beach heavy Kanyakumari. Get Geared up: The trip will take you around 10 hours but the 700 odd km are completely worth it because they’re incredibly scenic.

dehradun to nainital This may be a short trip, but it’s still an extremely impressive one. The way through the hills is scenic to say the least and although roads are a bit harsh (make sure your car is in a really good shape), the sights, parks and shrines along the way make the journey worth it. You can pass through Rishikesh, stopover at Corbett and take a dip in Naini Lake as you pass through the Kumaon Hills. There are several long, barren stretches, so carry essentials on the way. Get Geared up: The shortest trip on this list, at around a mere four hours, the 350 odd km are scenic enough for a weekend getaway. You could stop at Kathgodam on the way, making it a 12 hour trip.

Markets Volatile

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (May 31, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

PEVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose marginally on Thursday (May 30, 2013) a net 19.75 points (0.32%) and closed at the 6124 point level. It then rose and turned into a range bound movement until 2.58 p.m. The index then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 6133 points level at 3.11 p.m. It then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 62 points. Sentiment turned bullish in the last half an hour of the session however, amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 28 were losers, 21 were gainers and 1 remained unchanged. Heavy buying was seen in auto and FMCG stocks, while substantial selling was seen in realty and metal stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 34.18%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 569 were gainers, 807 were losers and 71 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero but is now declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are flat. No signal here. The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.

support is at the 5942 points level. The next support is at the 5867 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6223 points level. The next resistance is at the 6357 points level.

Pivot Point Analysi s: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6110 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6086. Support (2) = 6048. Resistance (1) = 6148. Resistance (2) = 6172.

OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed two consecutive doji patterns (indicating indecis iveness amongst inves tors) has formed a white body candle on substantially higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Fur ther, the index is above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day’s moving averages and all the four averages are rising. All these indicate a positive bias. However, the 5 day’s moving average is still below the 15 day’s moving average. This is negative. The velocity parameters continue to remain neutrally trended. MOIL results better than est primarily due to higher volumes, realizations disappoint: MOIL sales at Rs 2.66bn (32.3%YoY/16.9%QoQ) were higher than our estimate of Rs 2.20bn primarily due to higher than expected volumes which increased by 18.7%YoY/25.78%QoQ to 356kt (DCe: Rs 260kt). Realizations were lower at Rs 7072 per tonne (Dce: Rs7804/mt) as the realization of Ferro grades fell by 27.3%YoY/16.5%QoQ to Rs 8132/tonne, though the ferro grades comprised of 78% of the total sales. EBITDA rose by 27.2%YoY and declined by 4.8%QoQ to Rs 1.08bn (DCe: Rs 0.949bn). Margins declined to 41% (931bpsYoY/167bps QoQ) due to lower realisations. Other income decreased by 4.2%YoY/6.0%QoQ to Rs 602mn. PAT improved by 10.8%YoY though it declined by 3%QoQ to Rs 1.101bn (DCe: Rs 980mn) due to higher than expected EBITDA. On the balance sheet side, we were surprised by the increase in debtor days from 40 days in FY12 to 108 days in FY13 which is concerning. MOIL has increased the prices of Mn ore by 9% at the beginning of Q1FY14, given the strong prices globally. However we believe Mn ore demand would be muted given the weak steel demand and expect Mn ore prices to remain largely flat on annual basis. MOIL has declared a dividend of Rs 5.5 per share implying a payout of 20% in FY13. We believe increasing the dividend payout to its shareholders given the high cash of Rs 22.76bn would improve its stock performance. This would also alleviate some concerns regarding the utilization of cash , in the investment of shares of other PSU companies or diversification in the unrelated capital intensive sector like power. Lower dividend leading to higher cash also led to decline in its return ratios with ROE declining from 18% in FY12 to 12.7% in FY15E. MOIL is currently trading at 2.2xFY14EV/EBITDA and 1.8xFY15EV/EBITDA. We reduce our target price per share to Rs 238 (3.0x FY15 EV/EBITDA) and maintain our Accumulate rating on the stock given the cheap valuations.

Angel Broking calls a ‘Buy’ on Bajaj Electricals CMP: Rs. 165 Target Rs. 237

Bajaj Electricals Ltd. (BEL) reported poor set of numbers for 4QFY2013. Topline reported flat growth of 5.1% yoy to Rs1,114cr lower than our estimate of Rs1,177cr. EBITDA stood at Rs15cr which was lower by 84.7% yoy while margins at 1.2% lower by 694bp owing to higher raw material cost, currency volatility and inventory correction on account of new inventory policies of the company. Net profit for the quarter stood at Rs0.6cr lower by 98.1% yoy. Increased ad spends and premium segment launches on an uptrend: BEL is set to celebrate its 75th year in July by elaborating its ad spends by almost 50% to Rs75cr (from Rs38cr in FY2013) in order to increase its visibility. This in result is expected to create consumer pull thereby enhancing the top-line of the company. Moreover, following the success in induction cooker (sales from Rs60cr (FY2011) to Rs100cr (FY2012) to Rs150cr in FY2013), BEL has launched few models in ceiling fan premium segment, air fryers in FY2013 and is looking forward to enter water purification products segment. Outlook and valuation: Amidst poor performance for the quarter, BEL is set to start the FY2014 with a clean slate after the stock correction and significant hit from the cost over-run of E&P’s delayed projects closure. Hence, we expect the top-line, EBITDA and PAT to grow at CAGR of 14.9%, 72.0% (due to low base) and 99.5% respectively over FY2013-15E. With the recent correction, the stock is available at attractive PE of 8.3x for FY2015E earnings. We maintain our Buy rating on the stock with target price of Rs 237 based on target PE of 12x for FY2015E.

Prabhudas Lilladher calls a ‘Buy’ on Peninsula Land CMP: Rs. 46 Target Rs. 59

Upcoming launches: During FY14, the company has planned three more launches, all in Mumbai. Two of these are South Mumbai projects, Bishop Gate at Breach Candy (10 duplex of which 6 have been sold) and Carmichealroad (19 apartments), while one is located in Central Mumbai at Sewri, next to their previous development ‘ Ashok Gardens’. Overall, the company has ~4mn sq.ft in pipeline roughly valued ~Rs60-80bn which shall accrue in the next 3-4 years. Valuations: With good visibility in terms of launches as well as good cash generation from PBP sales, we are maintaining our positive stance on the stock. We maintain ‘Accumulate’ with a price target of Rs 59. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

orporate India is putting on a reasonably good show in adverse conditions. But the slowdown in the economy is causing an equivalent pressure in corporate numbers like growth, especially seen in the core sector where it was severely strained. Interestingly, the fastest growth in sales was posted by companies that were in a smaller growth bracket than the large caps. “Net sales registered a growth of 12.6% in FY 13 compared with 21.1% in the previous year,” says Care Ratings in a Corporate Performance analysis. The decline in growth rate of

sales could be attributed to the low industrial production numbers with slack conditions in the economy. In context, industrial production grew by 1% in FY13 as against 2.9% last year. Growth in the core industries, which account for 37.9% of IIP, witnessed slower growth of 2.6% in FY13 as against 5.0% growth in FY12 indicating lower production activity in the fiscal gone by, says the report. However, there is some positive news for the corporate players. The growth in raw materials expenses saw a significant decline from 27.4% in FY 12 to 12.1% in FY 13. This was mainly because of a decline in the average

inflation from 8.9% in FY 12 to 7.4% in FY 13, thereby bringing down the nominal value of raw materials purchases. Interest expenses saw a drastic decline too. The growth in interest expenses declined from 46.9% in FY 12 to 23.3% in FY 13. Growth in bank credit witnessed a decline from 17.0% in FY12 to 14.1% in FY13, according to inputs from Care Ratings. And there was one final remarkable take from the analysis. Growth in net profit was largely dominated by the 326 companies having sales between Rs 100 to 500 crore, accounting for 3.6% of total sales, of the 1,297 companies.

Pilot Pitches For Distinction Between Ponzi and Genuine Schemes By A Business Reporter

I

n the backdrop of police action against global direct selling major Amway in Kerala, the government is looking to remove the legal ambiguities to differentiate between fraudulent ponzi schemes and genuine businesses run by “reputed and lawabiding” entities. “We will work closely with concerned ministries and industries to remove the ambiguity in the law (related to tackling ponzi and other fraudulent schemes) as soon as possible,” Corporate Affairs Minister Sachin Pilot told PTI. “While steps should be taken to crack down on fraudulent companies running dubious investment schemes,

companies that are reputed and abiding by the law must be delineated,” the Minister said. Pilot’s comments come against the backdrop of Amway’s India Chairman William S Pinckney and two company Directors being arrested by the Kerala police earlier this week over allegations of fraud. They were later released on bail. Commenting on the Amway incident, he said that “it is disappointing that such an eventuality came about. Such events (like Amway) might negatively affect the prospects of our country as an attractive investment destination…While we take strong actions against ponzi schemes, we need to be careful not to create a vitiating atmosphere for reputed and

law abiding companies,” Pilot said. Amway’s business model involves direct selling of various consumer products to their customers, who in turn get incentives for bringing more clients and further expanding the network. While ponzi schemes also follow a kind of network marketing model, generally these businesses are totally focused on incentives from multilevel marketing without the presence of any real products in many cases. Incidentally, Industry chamber FICCI has also said that that actions against Amway was inappropriate and unwarranted since there is no criminality involved and the case should have been handled as a consumer redressal.

our Indian business leaders; Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, P N C Menon, Vineet Nayar and Ronnie Screwvala — figure in this year’s list of Asia-Pacific’s most remarkable ‘givers’. The annual list of ‘Heroes of Philanthropy’, compiled by Forbes Asia magazine, features a total of 48 persons from the the Asia-Pacific region, including countries like China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Listing Indian biotechnology major Biocon’s founder and chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw as one of ‘the most notable givers’, Forbes said she is working to improve cancer care and has pledged to give away 75% of her wealth. Other Indians on the list included

realty major Sobha Developers’ Chairman Emeritus P N C Menon, who plans to give away half his estimated USD 435 million fortune through his Sri Kurumba Trust — his family’s charitable arm. The Sri Kurumba Trust has adopted 4 villages in his native Kerala in 2006 and helps families with a monthly income below USD 90 (over Rs 5,000). HCL Technologies Vice Chairman Vineet Nayar sold shares in the outsourcing company for USD 24 million last year and the proceeds went mostly to Sampark, a charity he started long with his wife Anupama. It works with local governments to improve schools, fund social ventures and expand water supply.

Entertainment mogul Rohinton ‘Ronnie’ Screwvala, co-founder of UTV Group and Walt Disney’s India Managing Director, also plans to spend USD 180 million over 5 years to uplift one million villagers in Maharashtra. “The selections are subjective and we aim for a mix of notable people and causes. We also try to identify new philanthropists each year and pick only true philanthropists who are giving their own money, not their company’s because donating shareholder’s funds is not charity,” Forbes Asia Senior Editor John Koppisch said. He further noted that “by calling attention to these charitable souls, we hope to encourage more giving”.

BUSINESS BRIEFS HC Flays Insurers On Compensation Issue The Bombay High Court has come down heavily on insurance companies for habitually failing to deposit the compensation amount payable by them to accident victims at the time of filing appeals in courts. Section 30 of The Employees’ Compensation Act, 1923, requires that the compensation be deposited in the court while filing an appeal.

while back there were rumours that Danny Denzongpa would next be seen in the Dharma production film Shuddhi. Though the initial buzz proved to be untrue, we now have confirmed reports that Danny will in fact be seen in Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Boss and Salman Khan’s Mental. Further it is said that the 65year-old actor will be seen in an action avatar in Boss and in Mental respectively. While in Boss Danny will be seen engaging in some high octane hand to-hand combat, Mental will feature the actor as the main villain.

Despite giving some very successful songs why did your career face rough weather? I was first noticed with Kamal Rajasthani’s number—‘Kasme hum apni jaan ki khaaye chale gaye’ for Mere Gareeb Nawaaz. And even Rafisaab congratulated me for the rendition of this song. Sadly my biggest mistake, then, was to let go off an offer to sing for Raj Kapoor’s Prem Rog. My secretary goofed up by making unreasonable demands without my knowledge. You also lost the chance to sing for Manmohan Desai’s Mard? During those days, playback singers would be paid a sum of Rs.5,000 for a song. When Manmohan Desai asked me to sing for Amitabh Bachchan, I told him

I wanted Rs.6,000 a song. Rs.1,000 extra was a princely sum back in the ‘80s. Because of this Manji replaced me with another singer.

Did you ever try to pacify Manmohan Desai? Yes, I swallowed my pride and went to Manji’s house to ask him why he had recorded his songs with another singer, Shabbir Kumar though he knew that I was a far superior singer than Shabbir. I was shocked when Manji told me that although he knew Shabbir was inferior to me, he did not want to deprive him of his livelihood by opting for me. All said and done, Shabbir also reduced his price and got my songs. Didn’t composers back you? Laxmi-Pyare were very sought after then. It is sad but true that Pyarelalji would discourage me by telling me that I still had a lot to learn to become a singer.

Have the comparisons of your voice to Mohd. Rafi’s been a positive or negative factor? Yes, my voice is similar to Mohammed Rafi saab‘s but it is God-given. I have never imitated any singer. On the other hand, Mohd. Aziz was also inspired by Rafisaab but Aziz was a complete singer and very gifted. Aziz eventually replaced Shabbir in the priority list of all music directors. What next? My last album ‘Tohfa’ was well received. I am also toying with the idea of producing a musical suspense thriller like Baazigar. Plus I am still doing stage shows. “Abhi bhi meri awaaz mein dum hai” (smiles).

Sonam to replace Freida in NH10 A

while back, it was announced that Freida Pinto would soon be making her Bollywood debut in the Navdeep Singh film NH10. Though the actress had confirmed her presence in the film, we now here that Freida has opted out of the project. It is learnt that Freida, who till now had been pretty excited about her Bollywood debut, so much so that she even roped in international financers for the film, has since decided on opting out. The reason she claims behind this sudden change were the apparent delays in the film’s schedule. Earlier, NH10 was slated to go on floors in March, however with the initial hiccup of Eros opting out of co-production, the film’s shoot was postponed to June. However, this second date as well was later shifted to October. This entire date changing farce irked the actress who promptly walked out. While Freida no longer wants to be a part of the film, producer Vikramaditya Motwane and director Navdeep Singh have on the

other hand decided on roping in a more commercial actress, Sonam Kapoor.

for herself in Mumbai lying about her age and also her family background to prove that she had come out of a feudal and patriarchal village and clawed her way to Bollywood, when in reality, she had a normal, middle-class Delhi upbringing. Initially, her sheer chutzpah deserved admiration. She realised that she had to somehow get a foot in the door with average looks and zero acting talent, and made use of her great body, sharp tongue, calculating brain and, undoubtedly, an excellent image building and PR team.

But a decade later if she has nothing else to offer but her by-now pathetic gift of the gab, and frequent photo-ops (for which she reportedly pays the paparazzi) with the famous and the powerful, then all that intelligence and image management means nothing. The question still is, why does the media take her seriously? Why does her every appearance and utterance be reported? Can’t the entertainment pages be used to highlight real achievements of people who deserve to be there, rather than those with strong PR?

mran Khan, who plays a goon of 80s in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai Again took inspiration from Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff to play his part and is happy to have learnt their styles. As a part of his research on getting into the skin of the character, Imran watched a lot of films featuring actors Kapoor and Shroff to understand how things were back then in 80s. “As I had to go back to 80s for my role in the film, I based my character on actors like Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. I watched a lot of films of these two actors to understand how things were back then. It was great to copy best actors like them,” Imran told reporters here last night at the first look launch of the film. Imran, 30, who has been a part of films like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Delhi Belly, I Hate Luv Storys and Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola, says he does not think of setting an image for himself in his films. “I have not thought of my image. People talk about my image change as I do Delhi Belly and Matru ki Bijlee ka Mandola. But I never think about it that way. I only look at the script as an audience and think if I would want to watch

this film or not,” Imran said. “I don’t have a career plan. If I find a story entertaining then I do it. I go with my gut feeling and not think about what will work and what will not,” the actor added. Directed by Milan Luthria, the film is a sequel to the 2010 hit film of the same name. The second instalment, starring Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran in the lead, will release on Eid this year.

ARIS: Samantha Stosur, who must reach at least the quarter-finals here to retain her top ten ranking, got another step closer when she beat Kristina Mladenovic in the second round. In a rain-interrupted match, Mladenovic competed well in the first set but tailed off in the second. The No.9 seed won 6-4, 6-3 and will play the former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic in the third round. Mladenovic is naturalised French, of Serbian parentage, and resident in Switzerland, so it possibly comes in handy that among her other skills she speaks five languages. Having turned 20 two weeks ago, “Kiki” arrived at Roland Garros on a career-high ranking of 46. Now the French No.3, she won the girls’ singles here in 2009. This is her fifth French Open, and her best as she has never previously got beyond the first round. But she was good enough to reach the third round at last year’s US Open, collecting the scalp of the No.17 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on the way. She notched up a straight-sets win over the American Lauren Davis to make the second round here. But encountering the 2011 US Open champion was a big step up in class. Stosur likes Roland Garros, with two semi-finals and the 2010 final to her name. It was cold on Philippe Chatrier Court when the match got under way but as rain had been forecast to wipe out the entire day’s play, even making a start was a bonus.

Jolly Friends, MIG Club enter final

MUMBAI: Fine performances by wicket-keeper Kushal Shah (65 runs) and Arun Yadav (47 runs), ably assisted by off-spinner Deepak Bandgar (3 for 31) and left-hander Rigved Karkhanis (2 for 17) helped Jolly Friends beat last year champions Sports Promotion by 23 runs to enter into the finals of inter-club

seeded Merab (ELO 2592) to a draw in 43 moves. Playing with white, Vikramaditya offered his 'h' pawn to gain the space to attack on the king side. On the 27th move the Indian IM again offered his knight to open the castling. But this gave an advantage to Merab. Being a piece up, Merab missed a golden chance of exchanging the queen and, instead, gave a knight which forced him to offer his rook to save himself. With only the queen and some pawns left on the board, both signed the peace treaty. On the top board no.1 seed GM M Mikheil (ELO 2645) of Georgia played the Spanish Opening against GM Ziatdinov Raset (ELO 2348) of USA. Raset gave a pawn on the 16th move to avoid the exchange of queens, thus giving a slight advantage to Mekheil who then went on to win the game. In another women's quarterfinal tie, fast improving junior Kalpita Sawant did not give her rival Shruti Sinha any chance whatsoever and beat her 21-9, 21-12. Umesh Sagre from Sangli after impressive display in the opening game, which he lost narrowly to Satyajit Jagdane, romped home without much ado. FEDERER PREDICTS HIGH CHARGE FOR ON-COURT MOBILES Roger Federer admits he can see the funny side of players whipping out mobile phones on court, but warns they could also undermine the game's integrity. France's Gael Monfils, meanwhile, took his phone from his bag to film the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd peforming a 'Mexican wave' during his second round victory over Ernests Gulbis yesterday. But Federer believes that mobile technology can also create problems for the sport. "It's happened before. It's only going to happen more. Wouldn't be surprised if they change the rules because of it again," said the 17-time Grand Slam title winner. "If you do it, fines are going to be more severe. I think it's pretty funny. The problem is that clearly there could be coaching going on and all these things through mobile devices. Probably be so easy to do. "

EW DELHI: "If the bowler was fixed, what was the batsman doing?" the query was posed by a Delhi court to the investigators. The court said it was posing this query as it wanted to know if the Delhi Police was probing the role of any batsman in the spot-fixing case. "If the bowler was fixed, what was the batsman doing? How come the bowler was giving 13 runs and batsman also made that many runs? What if he could not make that many runs? Who was the batsman when Chavan was bowling? There must have been something under his control also, after all, he has made runs. I wonder how can bowler give away runs without the batsman," Additional Sessions Judge Vinay Kumar Khanna asked. The judge's posers came during arguments on the interim bail plea of suspended Rajasthan Royals cricketer Ankeet Chavan. probing the role of any other player or batsman. They said they have evidence to establish that "Chavan was fixed". While opposing Chavan's interim bail plea, Mohan submitted that Chavan had promised to give 13 runs in second over in a match on May 15 between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals. There is a recorded telephonic conversation to the effect that Ankeet is ready to give 13 runs for Rs 60

lakh and the same evening, he gave those many runs, he said. It was this submission which prompted the judge to ask whether any batsman was fixed in the match or not. Mohan said, "After Ankeet gave away the runs in the fixed over, there is an intercepted conversation between Ajit Chadila and a fixer congratulating that Ankeet has done his job and now he has to be paid."

PREZ IS ON THE BACKFOOT As Clamour for Srinivasan’s ouster grows

N

EW DELHI: The clamour for embattled BCCI President N Srinivasan's resignation in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal continued to grow today with Goa and Assam cricket associations joining the chorus for his ouster even as Union Minister Sachin Pilot called for a "thorough probe" to restore the credibility of the game. Srinivasan might have claimed that the Board is firmly behind him but the tide seems to be turning against him in the last couple of days with more Board officials asking him to "stay away" till the investigations were completed. Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, who is Team Principal of Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise owned by the BCCI boss, is currently behind bars for alleged involvement in betting. "The spot fix-

ing scandal has sullied the name of cricket and hurt the feeling of people who are fondly attached to the game...An inquiry has been ordered into the scandal and I am confident that it will hold thorough probe to regain confidence of people towards lovely game of cricket," Pilot, the Corporate Affairs minister, said in Patna. IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla, who had yesterday indicated that he would not take up the post again, refused to talk more on the issue. "I have already spoken in detail about the entire thing yesterday...I have nothing to add to it," Shukla said. After Jyotiraditya Scindia raised the first voice of dissent on Tuesday, more and more Board and state unit officials are coming on record to express their displeasure over Srinivasan's continuance. "He has to resign, there is no other option. How

can you continue when your son-inlaw is involved, he is involved with CSK, it is just not possible to have an impartial probe till he resigns," said Goa Cricket Association vice-President Shekhar Salkar.

SPOTFIXING MONEY ALLEGEDLY PAID TO SREESANTH RECOVERED Delhi Police today claimed to have recovered from Mumbai a part of the money allegedly paid for spot-fixing to Sreesanth, who the cops claimed was helped in hiding it by an event manager aspiring to become the cricketer's agent. Police sources also claimed that Sreesanth spent around Rs 7.41 lakh, including payment of Rs four lakh through credit card, within days in Jaipur and Mumbai before his arrest. The recovery of Rs 5.5 lakh was made from a flat in Lokhandwala in And-

heri West at the instance of Abhishek Shukla, who was arrested for allegedly removing money and articles of Sreesanth soon after the cricketer's arrest on May 16. Police sources said this recovery completes the money trail of Sreesanth. "On May 14 when Sreesanth paid around Rs 1.95 lakh buying denims and other articles from Diesel Store in Mumbai, Shukla was handling the money.

IPL gave to Indian cricket nothing but disrepute: Ranatunga By Mona Parthsarathi

N

EW DELHI: Ridiculing the Indian Premier League for turning cricketers into a bunch of avaricious people, World Cup winning Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga today said that the cash-awash T20 league has given Indian cricket nothing but disrepute. IPL is embroiled in a spot-fixing scandal, leading to arrest of India's Test pacer S Sreesanth and several others including relative of the BCCI

President's son-in-law on charges of betting. "I am not surprised with the current spot-fixing and betting scandal in IPL. It has been happening from the beginning. Each and every season had issues like betting, fixing, alcohol, drugs. I think IPL never gave anything to Indian cricket. Indian cricket has never got such bad name in world cricket," Ranatunga told PTIBhasha over phone from Colombo. Ranatunga said it pained him to see that some of the former greats are backing the event just because they

too are getting monetary benefits out of it. "I feel hurt that past greats are trying to cover up as they are earning money through it. There are only a few like Erapalli Prasanna who have criticised it," he said without naming the greats. He also said not only Indian but world cricket is getting affected by it. "It is making cricketers greedy. Everyone wants to play IPL now and the focus has been shifted. I don't understand that what is the need of such a league. What has Indian cricket gained from it. It is spoiling players," he said.

We will be forced to play with five specialist bowlers: Dhoni

BIRMINGHAM: The new ODI rules and the conditions in England will force India to go in with five specialist bowlers in the upcoming Champions Trophy, according to captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who reckons all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will play a key role. "Conditions are very different compared to subcontinent. We have to look at the composition of the side and see what kind of bowlers we use but the conditions and the new rule forces us to play with five bowlers", Dhoni said at the pre-tournament press conference here. "Jadeja gives us the balance that we really need. He is a great asset to have with his 10 overs of spin bowling and batting down the order," Dhoni said. "We are hoping Jadeja fires or else we have a few others," he added. Rohit Sharma was promoted to open the innings during the ODI series against England at home but the skipper indicated that Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan will start off in the tournament. "It's good to have Shikhar and Vijay back in the side. They both scored runs in Test matches against a good side. Vijay had a decent IPL whereas Shikhar did well after coming back from injury. It's always better to start off with two proper openers. Rohit will be the back-up option while I consider Dinesh as a specialist middle-order batsman," he explained. India will be playing outside the sub-continent for the first time since the new rules have been implemented and Dhoni is a touch worried. ICC PROBES MATCH-FIXING IN BANGLADESH DHAKA: The International Cricket Council is probing allegations of match-fixing in Bangladeshi cricket with former national captain Mohammad Ashraful among those being questioned, local officials said. ICC anti-corruption inspectors were investigating allegations of wrongdoing during a match in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), a spokesman for the Bangladesh Cricket Board said.
