“The subject is Princess Victoria Gowramma of Coorg, the daughter of Chikka Veerarajendra, the last Maharaja of Coorg, who was exiled to Varanasi after he was dethroned by the British Raj in 1834 . “Born in Goa, she was lovingly called Gaurimaa (Gowramma) a

when she was given an additional name by the queen, her godmother. Her original name therefore, stayed. “It is believed that a Goan goldsmith was summoned to create jewelry for this occasion, as the inscription of his Goan village can be seen engraved on her gold belt. “There are questions, of course. Why she is wearing no earrings? Why is she wearing a yoni pendant on the chain around her neck, was she a Tantric Bhairavi? Did she give Tantra Diksha to Prince Albert, the royal consort to the Queen? Finally, is this English court painter saying something to us Goans?

The lost Bhairavi from Goa

ARTIST, mystic, tantric Udayraj A. Gadnis, Mumbai-born but with roots in Goa’s Madgao, with a 14year-old school of tantra in Karmali, Old Goa, has been missing from this city for some time. However, we are pleased to report that he is very well and having the time of his life, painting and meditating in London. Considered an authority on Tantric art in fact, he is going

through some exciting times, discovering caches of old art that really should be in India but are probably better off abroad. His most recent discovery has been a painting by Franz Xavier Winterhalter, oil on canvas, dating from 1873, in a collection in Central London. The German painter specialized in European royalty his painted portraits

included the family and children of Queen Victoria. Here is Udayraj waxing lyrical: “It’s just an amazing twist of fate, that when I saw this beautiful painting by court painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter, oil on canvas, sometime before 1873, I was struck deeply by the beauty of the face and the elaborate Goan hair style, very typical, with Aboli chi phoole tucked into the amboda, and exquisite jewelry which you can see even today in Goan Devi temples. I started some research and here is the story.

Sydney is Vivid again

IF you’re planning a trip Down Under, now would be a good time to attend the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere. In broad daylight, without any added effects and drama, the Opera House is a wonderful sight. Now imagine it and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Darling Harbour, as well as the Old Customs House pulsating with light displays, lighting installations around the foreshore, live music performances and more than 120 creative events from now till June 10. Developed by the government of New South Wales, this is the fifth year Vivid Sydney is being held and

The combinations never pale, the appeal never fades, as the Sails are transformed night after night, from hour to hour, during the Vivid Sydney festival of light, music and ideas.

mystic practically from birth, whose poems on the River Mandovi for Shree Mangesh, Lord Shiva, at the age of ten, still resound. “The heart broken and exiled father and daughter traveled to England in 1852. When they were presented to Queen Victoria, the Queen was taken by her beauty and devotion and took her under her wing immediately. “Queen Victoria, along with her royal consort Prince Albert, was present at the baptism of this Hindu princess by the Archbishop of Canterbury on June 30, 1852,

installations has tripled this time, with artists from the USA, Germany, Italy, Greece, Malaysia, Korea, Poland, Brazil and New Zealand taking part. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, familiar to us Indians, has its own programmable interactive installation, controlled by the public from an interactive touch screen, so you can see yourself up there in lights. And every day there is the Aquatique show in Darling Harbour. Don’t you just love the names! Are we going? Unfortunately, no. We shall just wait for the Kala Ghoda Festival that will roll around to entertain us next January, and hope for a bit of son et lumiere to lighten up our dull lives.

Stop blaming them for pollution! Don’t you know this is one of the leading eco-friendly projects in the country?

n a night long operation on Sunday, Deonar police arrested six bookies, four from Kena Market, Tata Nagar in Govandi, and two from a video parlour in Ghatkopar (East) and recovered a total sum of Rs.4,72,000 and eight cell phones. All the bookies were caught taking bets for the final IPL match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) which was held at Kolkata’s Eden Garden. The four arrested bookies from Tata Nagar are Iqbal Ansari (33), Mehboob Muhir Ansari (32), Shafique Hussain Shaikh (31) and Ganesh Bhosale (41). At the time of their arrest the bookies were operating from Iqbal’s house and were taking bets for the IPL final cricket match between CSK and MI. The police recovered Rs.70,000 and six mobiles from them. Earlier the same day, Deonar senior PI Prahlad Panaskar sent a police team

Chhattisgarh massacre: What can the NIA do now?

T

HE Naxalites who shot down 26 people – including the Congress party chief — appear to be ferocious lot of boys who must have undergone thorough brain-washing. They must have been undergoing good training for at least the last couple of years. The pertinent question that arises is what explanation there can be for the intelligence failure. The Centre is blaming Chhattisgarh – saying that the security lapse was at the state level. As usual, after the bloody tragedy, the blame game has started. The scenario is frightening: Some 300-500 youngsters in the age group of 19-22 had automatic weapons. For them it must have been a lame-duck operation. Our security men had only pistols and they evidently could not do anything against automatic weapons. They might not have not even known what kind of weapons the Naxalites had. Another question that arises is with regard to large quantities of automatic weapons and ammunition the Naxalites possess. Where did they get them all? The finger of suspicion points to Pakistan which is not far from Chhattisgarh. That the ISI is conducting continuous destabilising operations against India are well-known. It will not be a surprise if the Naxalites get their supplies from the spy agency in Pakistan. It has got to be established where the Naxalites got their deadly, sophisticated weapons from. Finally, the NIA has moved in: A clear case of the stable door being shut after the horse has bolted. What can the NIA do now? The terrible damage has been done and evidently the Naxalites are back safe in their hideouts.

AVE you forgotten the punishment we gave you in 1962 after you had violated our borders?” This is what a retired top army general asked me at Beijing nearly a decade ago. I recalled his warning when India was shaken in the midst of China’s inroads into our territory. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, on visit to Delhi this week, have discussed the subject at length. But the victory by Beijing has not let it feel differently and it continues to ride a high horse. China argues that normalcy can prevail if the border issue is sealed. This means it continues to occupy our territory it has usurped. Our Prime Minister is correct in maintaining that “no peace and tranquility is possible” without the settlement at the border.

side India. Beijing wants to tell the world that it owes no explanation to anyone for going into its ‘own territory’. China has made it clear that it is not in favour of having a firm border because an undemarcated border gives it leeway to lay claim even on Arunachal Pradesh. For example, no information is forthcoming why a separate visa is issued to people from Arunachal Pradesh and J&K. The real issue with China is Tibet. Beijing may not say so but it links the border issue with the future of the Tibetans who have taken shelter in India in thousands under the leadership of the

to know which of the two emerges successful. From economics point of view, China has beaten India. But political problems have been solved through dictatorship in China. Can that be the lasting solution when India, compared to China, has kept the society open and given an opportunity for a free play of different points of view and different ideologies? Only time will tell. Yet one thing that is clear is that India will have to accelerate the economic growth which is now 4.6 per cent as compared to a little over 9 per cent three years ago. And there is an axis between China and Pakistan. There is the allegation that China is trying to surround India by having close relations with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. Even if a war is ruled out, the pressure on India’s security forces will be immense. India need not treat the border as an obsession. China has seen to it that New Delhi does so.

BETWEEN THE LINES

This is its weakness. India should talk to China about the Tibetans who are a millstone around China’s neck. Even otherwise, the word Tibet is a bugbear for Beijing. It is too late in the day to question its authority. It is under China because of its suzerainty over Tibet. But there is a difference between suzerainty and independence. However, the issue of Tibetans’ human rights is a point which India can take up. It is strange that none in the world has taken notice of dozens of Tibetans who have burnt themselves in the name of freedom and liberation. India’s determination to increase the bilateral trade with China is welcome. But economic cooperation is not synonymous with people-to-people cooperation which does not exist. If the problem is solvable in the lifetime of the Dalai Lama, he is willing to accept autonomy of Tibet inside China. The youth is not in favour of the Dalai Lama’s formula but cannot oppose him because he represents Tibet as long as he lives. The enunciation that both sides would not attack each other is like what the late Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai told Prime Minister Nehru. Beijing never kept its word. There is no assurance that it would do so in the future.

Actual Line Of Control I do not know whether people on both the sides are really familiar with the border dispute between India and China. When the 1962 war ended with our defeat, China unilaterally ceased fire and then indicated the ceasefire line as the possible border. But the line, despite India wanting the delineation of a firm one, was not acceptable to China. It changed its mind and declared the actual line of control as the border. China advanced its troops on its own. This line violated the traditional border both in the Ladakh and in the northeast on the Arunachal side. Even these borders were not sacrosanct for Beijing. The Colombo powers intervened after the 1962 war to ask both India and China to withdraw their forces by 26.5 meters behind the lines where they stood. India withdrew accordingly. But China did not. Even the lines its forces have occupied at present are haphazard and favour it all the way. Beijing’s intrusion (our PM prefers to call it an incident to keep tension down) at Daulat Beg Oldi Sector in Ladakh is in the area which it has not allowed to be demarcated. In fact, it has treated the entire disputed area under its overall control without negotiating with New Delhi or even indicating specifically which area belongs to it. Nor has China offered any explanation for staying in India’s territory (Despang) for 23 days and pitching tents in-

Tibet, a bugbear for Beijing Kuldip Nayar Dalai Lama. Beijing did raise the issue at the India and China conclaves but kept quiet when it was told that the Dalai Lama was a religious leader, nothing more. Whatever be Beijing’s wishes, New Delhi is in no position to reopen the Tibet issue. Buddhism is one of the religions which the Hindus profess. It should not be expected that for the goodwill with China, India can dare play with the sensitivities of Hindus who are 80 per cent. Even otherwise, the two countries, India and China, are giants and any clash between them is bound to have stirrings in South Asia and the rest of the world. India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, after the 1962 hostilities, warned the world leaders through a personal letter to each one of them that the two nations represented different traditions and conflicting ideologies. India is a democratic country while China a dictatorship. South Asian countries would be interested

‘If one has faith one has everything’

It is said that truthfulness alone constitutes the spiritual discipline of the Kaliyuga. If a man clings tenaciously to truth he ultimately realizes God. Without this regard for truth, one gradually loses everything. After my vision of the Divine Mother, I prayed to Her, taking a flower in my hands: ‘Mother, here is Thy knowledge and here is Thy ignorance. Take them both, and give me only pure love. Here is Thy holiness and here is Thy unholiness. Take them both, Mother, and give me pure love. Here is Thy good and here is Thy evil. Take them both, Mother, and give me pure love. Here is Thy righteousness and here is Thy unrighteousness. Take them both, Mother, and give me pure love.’ I mentioned all these, but I could not say: ‘Mother, here is Thy truth and here is Thy falsehood. Take them both.’ I gave up everything at Her feet but could not bring myself to give up truth. God laughs on two occasions. He laughs when the physician says to the patient’s

mother, ‘Don’t be afraid, mother; I shall certainly cure your boy.’ God laughs, saying to Himself, ‘I am going to take his life, and this man says he will save it!’ The physician thinks he is the master, forgetting that God is the Master. God laughs again when two brothers divide their land with a string, saying to each other, ‘This side is mine and

MATTER & SPIRIT that side is yours.’ He laughs and says to Himself, ‘The whole universe belongs to Me, but they say they own this portion or that portion.’ The waves belong to the Ganges, not the Ganges to the waves. A man cannot realize God unless he gets rid of all such egotistic ideas as ‘I am such an important man’ or ‘I am so and so’. Level the mound of ‘I’ to the ground by dissolving it with tears of devotion. One cannot attain divine knowledge till

one gets rid of pride. Water does not stay on the top of a mound; but into low land it flows in torrents from all sides. Many people think they cannot have knowledge or understanding of God without reading books. But hearing is better than reading, and seeing is better than hearing. Hearing about Benares is different from reading about it; but seeing Benares is different from either hearing or reading. The vanities of all others may gradually die out, but the vanity of a saint regarding his sainthood is hard indeed to wear away. One cannot be spiritual as long as one has shame, hatred, or fear. If one has faith one has everything. By constantly repeating, ‘I am free, I am free’, a man verily becomes free. On the other hand, by constantly repeating, ‘I am bound, I am bound’, he certainly becomes bound to worldliness. The fool who says only, ‘I am a sinner, I am a sinner’, verily drowns himself in worldliness. One should rather say: ‘I have chanted the name of God. How can I be a sinner? How can I be bound?’ — Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

Sachin gets a memorable IPL farewell! THE team with the ‘Clean Tag’, Mumbai Indians were deserving winners of IPL 6 amidst the controversy that surrounded the tourney. Mumbai Indians played clean and square both on and off the field to prove their supremacy and rightly crowned Champions for their efforts. Sachin Tendulkar timed his T-20 IPL retirement to perfection and his teammates presented him with the trophy as a farewell gift for a cricketer who has served Indian cricket with distinction over the years. He did not play the finals but his very presence in the dug out inspired his colleagues to give off their best and it was a true finale to a tournament which saw a lot of scandals but ended on a high pitch. IPL is a hen that lays a golden egg both for the players and the Cricket Board and one is really surprised at some player’s greed in fixing things and ruining their career. A cleanup is required in the whole system and Sachin Tendulkar should be made the IPL Commissioner next year so that his very presence at the helm of affairs will encourage fellow cricketers to play clean and fair apart from emulating his skills on the cricket field. Well done Mumbai Indians and every cricket lover in the country is proud of your performance! — S.N. Kabra, Goregaon

fixing and BCCI with arrests being made with the required publicity. But are we looking for problems or solutions. The question is whether it is fixing or betting and if it is betting then whether all the publicity and arrests were justified. The BCCI President may not be aware of the activities of his son-inlaw. And passing information about team may not be a crime as every moment on the field may call for new actions or change in the strategy. Every player is human and attractions to the opposite sex is not a crime. Further, speaking on mobile phones may be cursory as the arrests till today have not proved any fixing. If one remembers Mr. Dennis Lillee, the great fast bowler, was caught betting against his team in a match where he took many wickets. Don’t know what happened but his team lost and it may not have been given much importance. Betting should be legalised as it may generate a lot of revenue for the government and also save the citizens from unnecessary taxes. Should the BCCI President resign? How can the President of BCCI be held responsible for the actions of his son-in-law? And in such an event the country will only see resignations. Can the game be fixed? If one watches cricket it is impossible when we see wonderful catches and fours and sixes with wickets falling to super balls. Interesting sign language MY wife was telling me about the new pyjama cricket sign language,

IT is reported that the Central Govt. has decided a massive grant to the tune of about Rs.12,000 crore to Bihar as a special case. Coming as the report does close on the heels of Nitish Kumar, CM of Bihar’s new conceptual framework on secularism vis- a -vis communalism to alienate Modi, it is very clear that the CM of Bihar has fallen a political prey to the Congress to prevent Modi from making it to the PM’s office. Nitish is rewarded rather handsomely for his sudden innovative propensity towards ‘secularism’ after being in BJP and benefiting for several years even after the Babri Masjid demolition in the presence of Advani and the riots that followed. The public, at large, can perceive the dirty politics being played by the CM of Bihar at a time when he should be highlighting the massive corruption under which the country is reeling and the notable factors for inflation and the inevitable need to unseat Congress to virtually save the Nation and set the tone for real growth and not on the lines as propagated by the present PM. — T.M. Deal with Maoists by peaceful means THE dastardly act carried out by the Maoist militants on the convoy of Congress leaders on May 25 in Chhattisgarh is highly condemnable. It also a grave reminder about the threat these militants pose to our internal security. It’s time we deal with this threat with severity. There are two ways of tackling this menace of militancy – one is by using force and the other is by peaceful means. The second one may sound absurd to many but then that is the one solution to clear this menace from the root. The first option is necessary but care has to be taken in using it for it has the potential of creating more of those which one is looking to wipe out, if not used with care. It’s a fact that we have more casualties by strikes carried out by these internal militants than the foreign sponsored terrorists. Lets not turn our eyes away from the fact that poverty, inequality and injustice is the root cause of militancy (and to a certain extent terrorism also). It provides a perfect ground for recruitment as hardcore militants and terror outfits are on the lookout of such soft targets. Militancy or terrorism can only be wiped out if “fertile” ground is not provided to them to grow their outfits by getting ready recruits, instead of just using force to tackle this menace. THINK...! — Abdul Monim, Vashi

SENSIBLE OPTION: In order to wipe out this menace of terrorism from the root, once and for all, it is advisable to adapt a nonviolent approach rather than using of force.

AS they say – if you feed the crocodile enough, the crocodile will eat you last. The Maoists have now started targeting VVIPs and that’s a good sign for the aam aadmi as only now will the netas suddenly wake up because their rear is on fire. However in the recent strike, one person deserved what he got. In fact it is good that he is alive to suffer. That person is none other than V.C Shukla, the Goebbels of the Emergency era who along with Bansi lal, Om Mehta and Sanjay Gandhi formed the BOSS of the country. The emergency was not all that bad, at least for the common man - for once the lower strata of sarkar, which interacts with the common man, were on their toes.

But this Indian Gang of Four got carried away and went too far. If only Indira Gandhi had managed to control her son and timed and managed the emergency differently, this nation could have become something different. Instead she made the same mistakes as her father and went the pseudo-secular and socialistic path. Even today liberalization is a circumstance of compulsion rather than a changed mind set. That’s why no one has the guts to remove ‘socialist’, introduced during the Emergency, from the preamble of the Constitution. Can you imagine – we were also NOT secular till 1975!! What a joke. That’s why ‘secularism’ has fallen from grace in order to garner votes. — T.R. Ramaswami , Kandivli

Replying to queries over the recent attack on Congress leaders in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, the Home Minister termed it as the tip of the iceberg and argued that the whole nation needs to take note for the need of special laws and development policies. Patil remarked that there are certain leaders in cities who secretly sympathise with the naxals and secretly extend support to their activities. Replying to queries over lack of development in the af-

fected regions, he said that even though there are funds available and administration is ready to implement projects, but often projects are stalled due to provisions of central acts like the Forest

Act. Patil added that often files pertaining to development work in the region are blocked in the piles of files in Mantralaya leading to inordinate delays in executing the projects. He said that the authority in-charge should be cleared where files related to development work are not stalled. Patil, who is also the Guardian Minister for Gadchiroli district, said that at times NGOs and Human Rights activists take objections to felling of trees to put up a light pole or even police action in tackling any naxal attack. Calling for a review of the existing laws, he said that armed attacks by naxals Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Often cops have to fire in self-defence only to have human rights activists criticise the police action as a violation of human rights. The Home Minister disclosed that through sustained development in the region naxalism has now been contained to some pockets of Gadchiroli and Gondia. Patil disclosed that the lack of agriculture infrastructure their produce has no market available. He added that the centrally funded Rs.185 crore bridge across Godavari River in Sironcha will help bring the region in close contact with neighbouring Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.

rE-hydrating yoursElf

top 5 thirst quEnching foods

Before we get to the fun stuff, you should know how to re-hydrate yourself in case you’ve been parched for too long. Here are a few tips to make sure dehydration is not one of the problems you face during summer: l Sip on fluids regularly through the day and not just when you’re thirsty. l When you’re thirsty, drink water. When you just want a cooling drink, go ahead and have one, but don’t use it as a replacement for water. l Increase your fluid consumption this season. From water to fruit juices, vegetable juices, cold soups and cooling drinks; you’re going to feel like drinking more than eating, so go ahead and do so. l Caffeine will dehydrate you more, so avoid drinking too much of it. l Flavoured water and sports drinks will help maintain your fluid balance, so there’s no need to be suspicious of them or avoid them. l Have at least a sip of water every twenty minutes or so if you’re outdoors. Don’t gulp down an entire glass all at once.

Did you know that some foods can quench your thirst as well? Most of these foods have high liquid content, so indulge in them during summer to relieve your thirst a little bit: l Zucchini is 95% water but it will lose all the water content when you cook it too much. Shred it or cut it into cubes and add it to your salads instead. l Have you had enough watermelon this summer? With 93% water, this fruit is refreshing and thirst quenching. l Oranges are not only healthy and filled with vitamin C, they’ve also got around 87% of water content which makes them an ideal fruit to have during summer. l We know we said no caffeine and this isn’t about the water content. But, when you’re feeling very hot and dehydrated, a cup of green tea can actually leave you feeling much more refreshed while

fluids to avoid So, by now you know why it’s important to keep yourself hydrated and why you need to ensure that you drink a lot of fluids during summer. But, not all fluids will be a boon for your body. Avoid drinking the following fluids:

alcohol: When it comes to which drinks to skip during summer, the first on the list has to be alcohol. Sitting in an air-conditioned room with a chilled glass of beer might be your idea of beating the heat, but your body won’t thank you for it. Alcohol dehydrates your body; so much so that for every small drink (30 ml) that you consume, your body produces around 120ml more urine. So, try and avoid alcohol as much as you can, and if you must, always drink one glass of water for every drink that you consume.

packEt juicEs: Surprised? Don’t be. Fruit juices might be a tasty option, but not all are good for you. For example, cranberry juice is a known diuretic, meaning that drinking it will increase your urine output. Also, some packaged juices have a really high sugar content; they might not dehydrate you, but they don’t bode so well for your overall diet and can affect your health. So, always check the list of ingredients and ensure that sugar levels are in check.

coffEE: Yes, we know that you can’t go through your day without your daily quota of coffee, but if you want to ensure that the heat

doesn’t get to you, you will have to cut down, or lower how much you drink. However, one or two cups isn’t bad as recent studies have shown that it is only a large consumption (4-5 cups or more a day) of coffee that causes dehydration. But, remember that it aggravates the condition if you’re already dehydrated. To keep yourself alert, drink water as it is known to activate your brain and give you an energy boost.

fizzy drinks: They contain sugar, are addictive, harm your teeth and most of all, are high in caffeine. Do we really need to tell you to lay off fizzy drinks? It is a fluid that does nothing except tantalise your taste buds. They will not help you feel refreshed or hydrate your body. Avoid them completely.

replacing fluids. Spinach. Surprised? Don’t be. A lot of leafy greens have high water content and spinach, with around 90% of water content, is a good bet. l

dishing on minErals When you suffer from dehydration, your doctor will tell you to have electrolytes. They play a big role in helping to maintain the fluid balance of your body. But, do you know what they are and why you need them? Electrolytes are minerals that are dissolved in water and can replenish your body with the sodium and potassium that it loses when you sweat. A lack of these minerals can cause dehydration. If you’ve been working out a lot during summer or if you sweat a lot, chances are your mineral levels have dropped. Keep sports drinks with you to prevent dehydration.

you’rE drinking all wrong It’s no secret that you should drink something when you’re thirsty, but don’t wait till you are. The best time to quench your thirst is before it hits you. Confused? Your body is already dehydrated when you’re thirsty, which is why you feel thirsty in the first place. When it’s really hot outside, drink cooling drinks that don’t have caffeine or alcohol. And drink every hour instead of only when you’re thirsty. A sports drink is a good idea if you don’t have access to water or don’t trust the water around you (water can make you ill if it’s questionable!).

EnErgy drinks: We can almost feel you frowning at us. But, you need to know that there’s a difference between energy drinks and sports drinks. Energy drinks are nothing but an overdose of caffeine and so, give you a shot of energy. And, as you should already know by now, caffeine dehydrates you. Sports drinks, on the other hand, are full of electrolytes and so, are a healthier alternative.

thE bEst watEr in thE world This is a little tip, but it really will help. A mixture of cold water with lemon or cucumber slices and a sprig of mint is the most cooling thing in the world. Always keep a bottle filled with it in your fridge to keep you refreshed during summer.

ExcitE your tastEbuds

a fEw pick-mEups

Just because you have to avoid delicious cold-coffee with chocolate sauce and extra whipped cream, it doesn’t mean you can’t go out and treat yourself at all. We bring our list of a few healthy, refreshing and, yes, delicious drinks: l Lemongrass cooler from Moshe’s for `110 l Watermelon & Mint Juice from Suzette for `120 l Costa Iced Tea (Cucumber flavoured) at Costa Coffee for `125 l Iced Shaken Lemon Green Tea from Starbucks for `100 l Koga (Guava juice, Grape juice, Kokam syrup, dash of lime juice) at The Beachcomber for `250

On a particularly long day at work, it can get a little boring to keep drinking water and a chilled drink is refreshing enough for us to be tempted by it. Head to your neighbourhood baniya and pick one of these: l B’lue for `30 l Amul Spiced Buttermilk for `10 l Lipton Iced Green Tea Powder for `10 (for a packet that serves three) l Goji Berry Cold Green Teas for `150 (comes in a variety of fruit flavours) l Nimbooz for `25

why not stay dry? Whether you’re thirsty or not, you need to stay hydrated. It not only helps your body to stay cooler (because it heats up so much during summer, you’ll need more fluid to stay cool), it also keeps your blood pressure normal, lowers your risk of getting a heat stroke and protects your joints and organs. Not to mention all the nutrients that it helps move through your body. So, next time you postpone drinking that glass of water, remember how essential it is for you to stay summer healthy.

Potatoes Think we’re talking complete nonsense? Then you’re going to find it hard to believe that potatoes are actually a health food. A medium sized potato has more potassium in it than a banana and 20% of your daily dose of vitamin C. They are also loaded with fibre, which helps keep you fuller for longer. But wait! That doesn’t give you permission to dig into a plate of fries. Baked or boiled potatoes are the smart diet choice.

Want a way to keep fruits fresh? Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you about the newly introduced fruit guards We’ve been telling you over and over again how you should be carrying fruits with you to snack on instead of buying unhealthy food but, cutting them up and putting them in your tiffin box can often leave them extremely unappetising. If you’re tired of bruised peaches, black apples and squished bananas, Prime World Store has a good option at hand for you. Their international fruit protector, the Banana Guard, keeps fruit fresh and safe for transport; complete with perforations that help with ventilation, preventing premature ripening. There’s also a locking mechanism to keep it closed. The unique, patented device allows for safe transport and storage of individual bananas, letting you enjoy perfect bananas anytime, anywhere. The

Banana Guard was specially designed to fit the vast majority of bananas. What’s more, the guard also helps you keep littering to a minimum if you’re not around a dustbin, since you can pop the skin back until you see one. MEATY ISSUE >> Overconsumption of meat is not only going to increase your weight and cholesterol, but also put you at risk of heart disease

Is your daily diet dominated by meat? Rhea Dhanbhoora suggests you take this quiz to find out whether you need to cut down your consumption

E

ating too much meat can be a serious health hazard, because you’re at a higher risk of developing not only fat and cholesterol, but also more serious problems such as heart disease and cancer. While processed meats are the worst offenders, even fresh meat can cause osteoporosis, reproductive problems and earlyonset puberty. Find out whether you and your family are at risk by taking the quiz below. Does at least one of your daily meals include meat? a. Yes. b. No. When eating out, do you always choose nonvegetarian over vegetarian options? a. Yes. b. No. Does your freezer always contain meat? a. Yes. b. No. Do you prefer eating red meat over fish or chicken? a. Yes. b. No. Do you often indulge in cold cuts, bacon or ham for breakfast? a. Yes. b. No. At a buffet, do you always skip the vegetarian dishes? a. Yes. b. No.

watch the meat feast! We know that if you regularly eat a lot of meat, you’re probably used to a certain type of meal; so cutting down is going to be hard for you. You may have a meat hangover initially, but once it becomes a healthy habit, you’ll thank us for suggesting it. Here are a few tips to help you out:

change breakfast: If you need to have meat with your breakfast, make it an occasional treat. It might be hard initially, but having bacon and eggs only once a week instead of daily will be worth it in the long run. try switching the meal: Instead of having meat with vegetables on the side, try switching it. Have a meal of vegetables or potato, with meat as the side dish. Slowly reducing your portions will get you used to the habit of eating a lot less meat than you’re used to. try a Different meat: Eat more chicken or fish. Certain types of fish such as rawas (Indian salmon) are meaty enough, so you will miss the feeling of meat just a little less than if you had a lighter fish. Spice your fish the same way you spice your meat to retain a hint of the flavour you’re craving for. snack right: Fill yourself up with healthy snacks, so that your body craves

less fat through the day. By the time you get to dinner, you’ll be eating less of that delicious steak because you’re already half full. Don’t buy processeD meat: Processed meat is just bad. Keep in mind that the less you buy, the less you eat. Give a family member the responsibility of buying groceries if you don’t trust yourself not to come back with some juicy bits. try new things: The easiest way to quit something is to distract yourself. Go on a little food journey and make it a point to try one new thing every day, whether you like it or not. From vegetables to types of dishes and different food from around the world — just stay away from meat! This way, you’ll be cutting down, but enjoying the process. If you’re not too adventurous with food types, you can always try a new recipe to help distract yourself from your cravings.

mostly as It’s quite obvious how much you love meat, but you’re going to have to start eating less of it in order to save yourself from health problems in the future. You need to replace some of the meat in your diet with non-meat sources. You don’t have to go vegetarian, simply switch to chicken or fish instead. mostly bs You’re quite healthy, so you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Your meat consumption is low enough for you to allow yourself a little treat now and then. However, if you would like to treat yourself, stick to lean cuts and avoid the fat and grease. You’re on your way to a pretty healthy lifestyle.

shhh noises “Shhhh” ing your baby imitates the sound he/ she heard in the uterus, which was pretty loud. Place your mouth close to your baby’s ear and make the noise. It should be louder than your baby’s cry or else they won’t hear it. Keep repeating the sound at a steady pace even if the baby seems agitated at first.

>> If you start stressing when your baby cries, they will pick up on your stress level and cry even more

stay calm The best thing that you can do when you’re stuck with a wailing baby is to stay calm. We know that that’s easier said than done, but remember that if you increase your stress levels, your baby will pick up on it and this increases their stress level. This means more crying. Stay calm and your baby will follow suit.

2 Drive by This has to be one of the most successful ways to calm a crying child. A ride in the car often puts a child to sleep in a matter of minutes. The vibrations, soothing noise of the car and stimuli-free zone, all help hush even the most persistent baby.

rocking The rhythmic moving and swinging back and forth imitates the jiggling your baby felt inside the uterus and activates a calming reflex. But, you don’t have to tire yourself out by swinging your baby for hours on end. There are several baby slings, carriers and bouncy seats available in the market.

>> Milk is a good source of calcium but it isn’t the only one

3

position matters Many people believe that newborns are easier to calm down when they are lying down on their stomachs. This position imitates the baby’s position in the uterus, which triggers a calming effect. Lying on their backs often triggers a falling reflex which can upset a baby. However, keep in mind that stomach position is great for calming crying, but babies should only sleep on their backs.

«10 ways to soothe a

crying baby

7 white noise Are you unable to sleep unless the A/C is on? Well, your baby could like some white noise as well. Any repetitive mechanical sound can help put your baby to sleep. Try keeping the vacuum, hair dryer or fan on low, so that the dull noise acts like a lullaby.

8

They may be small, but they sure can create a whole lot of noise! A crying baby is exhausting and it can be hard to tell what they need, especially if you’re a new parent. Glynda Alves helps you out with some tips

4

Diaper Duty A dirty diaper is one of the most common reasons your baby is upset and making it known loud and clear. Even if you have just changed your baby’s diaper, it’s a good idea to check. See that your baby’s diaper is clean before you try other methods of calming him/ her down.

slow Down Just how we feel overwhelmed when there is too much happening around us, babies feel the same way. Only it’s much scarier for them! Too much stimuli is hard for their small minds to process. Try dimming the lights, reducing the noise levels and removing excess toys and people from the environment.

5 running water Standing next to running water can instantly calm a baby. The noise reminds them of the womb and makes them feel secure. However, don’t waste water — collect it in a bucket.

Just your upper chest is not supposed to come out when you inhale, but also your ribcage. Your ribcage expands to 1.5 or 2 inches from the sides when you breathe right. Also, unless you have a sinus infection or congestion that keeps you from breathing through your nose, your mouth should be closed when you breathe. Taking a deep breath,

sighing or yawning frequently means that your body is not getting enough oxygen in your normal breathing pattern. A normal breath rate should be 10-12 breaths per minute. If you measure how many times you’re breathing each minute and you exceed 12, this is a sign of shallow breathing. mostly bs You are breathing in the right manner, which is going to result in much better health. crying Amidst an emotionally charged situation, when the boss is reprimanding you in front of your colleagues or deep in an altercation with someone — the last thing that you’d want to happen are tears dripping from your eyes. Several people complain (especially women) that this sometimes makes them come across as weak or as a ploy to distract others from the topic of disagreement, as they don’t have a valid point. However, seldom is that the case with many. Well, there’s a very simple way to stop your tears from embarrassing you. Simply pinch hard the skin between your thumb and index finger. And like magic, the tear duct will stop working. The logic: This is a diversion technique. You are refocusing your attention from the issue

But, don’t put too much pressure on your eyes while doing so. Make quick but light blinking movements. The logic: The reason is quite simple. Rapid blinking relaxes most of your eye muscles and lubricates the eyeballs. This stops your eye twitching.

SHaky HandS Shaky hands before a meeting or an important event? Go up and down a flight of stairs for three minutes. While doing that, keep swinging your arms and breathe deeply. The logic: Sudden sessions of intense exercise cause the muscles to absorb the adrenaline rush and calm those shaky hands for a substantial amount of time.

ASTHMA’S VITAMIN CONNECT >> If you suffer from asthma, going out in the sun will give you instant relief from the symptoms

Getting a little sun is more important now than ever before. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you how asthma patients can benefit and why the city is reeling under a deficiency

>> Your doctor might prescribe supplements if you suffer from a lack of vitamin D

SIgnS of VItaMIn D DefICIenCy Keep a lookout for the following conditions which can indicate that you suffer from a vitamin D deficiency. In many cases, vitamin D supplements can help relieve symptoms. But, consult your doctor first. Muscle weakness: Your muscles have vitamin D receptors and for them to function properly, they need to be sustained by vitamin D. So, if your body suffers from a deficiency of the vitamin, you will suffer from muscle weakness. Cardiovascular problems: Studies have shown that low levels of vitamin D can increase your risk of hypertension by as much as 67%. Depression: Your brain too has vitamin D receptors and if they don’t get enough of the vitamin, they can cause depression and mood swings. Insomnia: The exact link isn’t clear, but there is overwhelming proof that if you are deficient in vitamin D, it is likely that you will suffer from insomnia and a restless sleep pattern.

ave you been in the sun recently? We thought not. Since we spend most of our lives indoors, we miss out on the beneficial effects of the sun. Also, if you’re an asthma patient, you already know how much good a little sun can do. Take a look at why asthma patients should get more sun and why the city is lacking in vitamin D.

H

that there is an inverse correlation between asthma control and vitamin D levels. He tells us, “Correcting vitamin D might control asthma in patients, although more research is required to document it. The correction of vitamin D can also decrease an asthma patient’s dependence on steroids. Vitamin D is known to regulate your immune system and so, can bring about these effects.”

VItaMIn D & our CIty

A study by a team at King’s College in London suggested that low vitamin D levels worsened the symptoms of asthma while the vitamin can calm the active part of the immune system. It’s not a treatment yet, but is there any harm in getting a little more sun? It’s important to realise that a lot of people in Mumbai are more at risk of suffering from both asthma as well as vitamin D deficiency, so the link is inevitable. Pollution will aggravate asthma by clogging your airways with mucus and making them swell. Not getting enough sun means that your immunity drops and we all know that low immunity isn’t great for asthma patients. Several studies have found that children given vitamin D suffer from less asthma attacks than others, but there’s not enough evidence for it to become a treatment as yet. But, getting a little sunshine will boost your energy levels and you’ll get less affected from dust, grime and pollution and that can make people who suffer from asthma feel better.

You’ve heard all about how there’s a sudden deficiency of vitamin D in the city. If you’re wondering why so many people are affected, Dr. Vimal Pahuja lists out some of the causes of low vitamin D levels in Mumbai: 1. Changing food fads and food habits contribute to low dietary calcium and vitamin D intake. 2. High fibre diets that have phosphates and phytates deplete vitamin D and increase calcium requirement. 3. Genetic factors which degrade active vitamin D to inactive metabolites. 4. It has been shown that increment in serum vitamin D in response to treatment depends on the heritability of a vitamin D binding protein. 5. With modernisation, the number of hours that we spend indoors have increased, preventing adequate sun exposure. This is particularly true in the urban areas. 6. Increased pollution can hamper the ultraviolet rays to adequately synthesise vitamin D in the skin. 7. Repeated and unplanned pregnancies in dietary deficient patients can aggravate vitamin D deficiency in the mother as well as the foetus.

BarBara, our Beauty expert, will help fix your proBlems

Dear Barbara, I went to the salon and the stylist told me that I had split ends. The treatments she was offering me didn’t suit my budget. However, I really do want to tackle this problem. I usually take very good care of my hair, so I don’t know how the split ends occurred. Are there any home remedies that I can opt for? — akriti sharma, malad Dear akriti, Your hair may be showing signs of sun damage. So, the first thing you need to do is keep it safe from the sun. Always wear a hat outdoors and use a leave-in conditioner that has an SPF rating of at least 10-15. As far remedying your situation is concerned, start following a weekly deep conditioning ritual. Do it every Sunday when you’re not in a hurry to go to work. If that doesn’t help, deep condition your hair twice a week. Also, avoid hair styling products that have alcohol or peroxide as these ingredients will cause your hair to dry faster. >> Wear a hat when you go outdoors to prevent sun damage and split ends

Dear Barbara, My girlfriend has been trying to convince me to start shampooing and conditioning my hair every day. Earlier, I used to shampoo my hair just once a week, but she insists I need to do it more often. The shampoo she is making me use is very expensive, so I’ve started diluting it with water. Is that okay? — Dinesh rai, Dadar Dear Dinesh, First of all, we recommend you thank your girlfriend for making you see the light. Regardless of your gender, taking good care of your hair is essential, especially when you live in a city like Mumbai, with high levels of pollution and humidity. Also, diluting your shampoo depends on what type it is. If it’s a concentrated shampoo (it lathers well without dilution and is hard to rinse off), it should be alright. But, instead of diluting it to make it last longer, simply use a coin sized amount of shampoo while washing your hair. That’s all you really need and if you do that you’ll find that a bottle of shampoo will last for at least 2-4 months.

TOOTHOLOGY The colour of your teeth can hint at numerous health problems. Priyanka Singh tells you what colour corresponds to which disease, so that you can get yourself checked at the earliest

Brown

If the colour of your teeth is predominantly brown, it indicates that you drink a lot of beverages that have a staining effect on the enamel of your teeth. Culprits include coffee, tea, wine and cola. Consuming tobacco products can also lead to discolouration as well. Apart from your food habits, brown teeth may also be caused by celiac disease, an inherited food intolerance that triggers intestinal inflammation, frequent diarrhea, malnutrition or sudden weight loss.

Green A greenish hue or a yellow-greenish tinge to your teeth suggests that you might be suffering from sickle-cell anemia, or that there is an active bacteria development on your teeth.

Grey Teeth that seem greyer than normal can be the result of a previous infection. Greying might also mean that you had certain antibiotics before your permanent teeth were fully formed or that you were exposed to metals such as iron or manganese during your teeth growing period. Consult your dentist if you have greyish teeth and have had a previous infection, as there might be a possibility of the infection recurring.

lines, streaks or spots Bright white lines or spots that stand out on your teeth might be caused because as a child

you were over exposed to fluoride. It might also be a sign of fluorosis, which is a very dangerous and crippling disease. It can also be a warning sign for celiac disease.

yellow If you have a normal, light yellow tinge, it means that you need to cut on having tea, coffee, alcohol, acidic beverages, wine, cola and smoking, as all these habits discolour your teeth immensely. A severe yellowish colour is also another hint of celiac disease. If your teeth have changed their colour to yellow only recently, then you might have certain nutritional deficiencies. Teeth may also turn yellow from contact with stomach acid as a result of excessive vomiting, making yellow teeth a signal of the eating disorder bulimia.

Blue We were as surprised as you! But, there are in fact people with blue tinged teeth as well. Blue teeth occur when the enamel of your tooth starts to decay. You will see that the borders of your tooth will have a blue outer line and when light falls on them, a bluish tint will reflect off them. This is a dental problem and normal whitening solutions won’t be effective. Tooth enamel can get eroded or start decaying if you consume excessive soft drinks, suffer from a dry mouth and low saliva volume, follow a diet that is very high in sugar and starch, have an acid reflux disease or consume certain drugs or supplements that are acidic or have a high vitamin C content.

Antony rules out Army deployment

THANJAVUR (TN): Ruling out the possibility of deploying the Army for anti-Naxal operations, Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Monday said the real answer lies in strengthening local and central police forces. He said the Services have been extending full support to the police troops on the ground and the IAF was also operating its choppers during night in Naxal-hit areas. Asked if the time was right to deploy Army in anti-Naxal operations given the intensity of the attack on Saturday in Chhattisgarh, he said, "There in no proposal like that. We extend our support without direct involvement. The real answer is to strengthen the local police and paramilitary forces." The Defence Ministry has been against deployment of Army and the IAF in antiNaxal operations. The Defence Minister said the Services are providing "full support. In fact day before yesterday, before this tragedy happened, Air Force helicopters were flying at night time. Our support has always been there." On the Naxal attack, the Minister said, "India is a democracy, there is procedure, there are institutions and there are methods and opportunity for every section to express grievances. But this kind of violence is not acceptable."

Iran offers oilfields to India at lucrative terms Emergency landing as pilots N find cracks in windshield EW DELHI: Rattled by India sharply cutting down purchase of its oil, Iran on Monday offered oilfields on lucrative terms and routing gas pipeline through sea to avoid Pakistan, provided New Delhi raised oil imports. Iran mounted a high-level delegation led by its Oil Minister Rostam Ghasemi to impress upon New Delhi to raise oil purchases, which were cut to 13.3 million tons in 2012-13 from 18 million tons in the previous year. This year imports are

slated to fall further with MRPL which bought 3.9 million tons of Iranian oil in 2012-13, not importing any so far this fiscal. "We had a very fruitful meeting," Ghasemi said describing India as "brother and great neighbour". "There is great relation and history between the two countries," he said after a 150-minute meeting with Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily. While Ghasemi refused to divulge details of discussion, Moily said there were "certain issues and diffi-

culties" which need to be resolved. Sources said Tehran was also willing to re-route the Iran-PakistanIndia gas pipeline through an under-sea route to totally avoid going through Pakistan. New Delhi has refused to join the pipeline over concerns of safety of the line and supplies in Pakistan. Alternatively, Iran offered to ship the gas in its liquid form (LNG). Also, it offered a production sharing contract (PSC) to ONGC Videsh for the Farzad-B gas field.

Markets Surge, But…

NSE India: S&P Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Friday (May 28, 2013) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

PEVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Monday (May 27, 2013) a net 99.60 points (1.66%) and closed at the 6083 point level. It then declined into the red and registered the day’s low at the 5975 points level at 9.17 a.m. The index then bounced back into the green and turned into a range bound movement until 2.20 p.m. It then rose sharply and registered the day’s high at the 6099 points level at 3.01 p.m. The index then declined marginally and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty moved in a range of 124 points and closed above the psychologically important 6000 points level. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 43 were gainers, while 7 were losers. All the sectorial indices closed in the green. Heavy buying was seen in consumer durables, oil & gas and metal stocks. TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 19.31%. This change is substantial and indicates a less than full participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 862 were gainers, 522 were losers and 66 remained unchanged.

Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues).

RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indicator: The MACD is above zero but is now declining (negative if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.

Suppor t Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main support is at the 5942 points level. The next support is at the 5867 points level.

Resistance Levels: The immediate main resistance is at the 6223 points level. The next resistance is at the 6357 points level.

Pivot Point Analysi s: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 6053 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 6006. Support (2) = 5929. Resistance (1) = 6130. Resistance (2) = 6177. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index after having formed a small black body candle with a long lower tail (indicating indecis iveness amongst investors ) has formed a long white body candle. This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted towards the buy side of the market. Fur ther, the index has crossed above the 5, 15 and 2 5 day’s moving averages in a singl e session. The index is now above the 5, 15, 25 and 200 day’s moving averages. All these indicate a positive bias. However, the velocity parameters continue to indicate weakness. Further, the 5 day’s moving average is below the 15 day’s moving average and is declining. Both these indicate a negati ve bias. As such these are mixed signals. Investors are advised to adopt a wait and watch policy for a day or two until clearer signals emerge.

Work with strict stop losses on all positions

Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Has crossed above its 5-day average (at 6048) Positive. Has crossed above its 15-day average (at 6080) Positive. Has crossed above its 25-day average (at 6018) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 5761) Positive.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T) posted decent set of numbers for 4QFY2013, which were broadly in-line with our expectation both on revenue and order inflows front. However, owing to higher-than-anticipated other income and lower tax rate PAT came in ahead of our estimate. L&T secured orders worth Rs 27,929 cr during 4QFY2013, taking the order book to Rs 1,53,604 cr. Order inflows were mainly driven by major orders bagged in the infrastructure (28%), power (41%) and process (12%) segments. Performance in-line with estimates: On the top-line stood, L&T reported decent top-line growth of 9.9% yoy to Rs 20,294 cr which was in-line with our estimate of Rs 20,303cr. The decent growth in revenues was mainly driven by pick up in execution in the engineering and construction (E&C) and machinery & industrial product segment. Outlook and valuation: For FY2014, the management has given a guidance of 15-17% growth in revenue and 20% growth in order inflow and +/50bp on EBITDA margins. We believe given its robust order backlog, healthy order inflows during the past few quarters and strong execution capabilities, the company is well placed to achieve its guidance on the revenue front, given its robust order backlog. However, it would be difficult to achieve 20% growth on the order inflow front, considering the challenging macro environment. We believe L&T is best placed to benefit from a gradual recovery in the capex cycle, given its diverse exposure to sectors and a strong balance sheet. We maintain our Buy rating on the stock with a target price of Rs 1,761.

Anand Rathi calls a ‘Hold’ on Shriram City Union Finance CMP: Rs. 1100

Target Rs. 1214

Key takeaways: SME finance driving credit growth: In 4QFY13, Shriram City Union Finance’s AUM growth eased to 17.8%, down 3.5% qoq to Rs 158.3 bn, on account of a calibrated slowdown in gold-loan financing (22% lower qoq). Growth in SME loans and two-wheeler loans, however, were robust, with their share in AUM rising to 40% and 12% respectively, from 29% and 10% a year ago. Led by the sharper focus on the rural hinterland, we expect 24.5% growth in AUM over FY13-15. Wider spread, stable productivity: Reported gross spreads increased 45bps yoy (95bps qoq), to 11.45%, on the greater rise in yields on advances compared to the cost of funds. An easing liquidity cycle and a higher share of SME finance are likely to aid a stable NIM of +11.5% over FY14/15. Despite the continuous investment in its employees, cost-asset was stable at 4.7%. We expect cost-assets to improve to 3.9% in FY15, compared to 4.3% in FY13, with the NBFC better leveraging its investments in the existing setup. Our take: On the higher NIM assumptions, we increase our FY14 and FY15 estimated PAT 1.6% and 1% respectively. We raise our target from Rs 1,161 to Rs 1,214 and, on the higher RoE, value the NBFC at 2.4x FY14e BV (earlier 2.3x FY14e). Healthy credit growth and a niche model with a rural focus would support a 3.3%+ RoA over FY13-15. On fair valuations, we maintain a Hold. Our target is based on the two-stage DDM.

Prabhudas Lilladher calls a ‘Buy’ on Jammu & Kashmir Bank CMP: Rs. 1256

Target Rs. 1650

J&K Bank recorded strong performance in FY13 despite some disappointment on asset quality in H2FY13. Risks remain in the non-J&K book due to weak macros but J&K bank remains best positioned to benefit from high J&K state GDP growth with likely surprise in J&K state loan growth and asset quality. Despite factoring in ~25bps NIM contraction and ~80bps credit costs, we still expect ROEs of ~1920% and hence, maintain ‘BUY’ with a PT of Rs 1650/share. Growth prospects strong in J&K: The bank reported ~25% YoY growth in J&K state advances and with J&K state GDP sustaining at +6.5-7.0% levels, management reiterated +25-30% advance growth target for FY14. Agri and J&K corporate drove faster growth and are likely to remain the key drivers. There has been some inch up in competition from private banks, but management indicated that they have maintained deposit/advances market share in J&K and their incremental rural branches are significantly contributing to CASA build up, with 70% CASA ratio in these branches. Expect low profit in FY14 but ROEs still best in class: We continue to believe that NIMs/ROAs for J&K bank will likely moderate in a falling rate scenario but despite assuming ~25bps lower NIMs and ~80bps of credit costs, we still expect ROAs of ~1.4% and ROEs of 19-20% with a possible surprise on FY14 growth. With undemanding valuations at 1.1x Sep-14book, we maintain ‘BUY’ with a PT of Rs 1,650/share. Please send all business and corporate related mails to business@afternoondc.in

In terms of concentration, there are only four industries with more than 5% exposure in the mid-cap index compared to nine for the CNX Nifty Index. Greater diversification and lower concentration help lower the risk for the CNX Midcap Index. Secondly, the CNX Midcap Index has a 23% allocation to defensive sectors (which are less volatile) such as consumer staples and pharmaceuticals, while the CNX Nifty Index has 10% allocation to these sectors.” Thus, contrary to general perception, mid-cap indices and funds have shown lower volatility and higher returns vis-à-vis large cap indices and funds. Hence, retail investors can look at increasing their exposure to mid-cap equity via mutual funds and benefit from higher risk-adjusted returns over the long run.

Government to announce FY13 numbers on May 30

Economists See Q4 GDP At 4.8% By A Business Reporter

E

conomists yesterday forecast a sub-five per cent readings in the March quarter GDP, pulling down the overall economic expansion in FY13 to a decadal low of around five per cent. Credit Suisse Director and Chief Economist Robert Prior-Wandesforde pegged the March quarter GDP growth at 4.8 %, which is also concurred by Nomura and DBS. The government will announce the FY13 GDP numbers on May 30, where it expects the readings to be around 5.2%, reports PTI from Mumbai. Till the third quarter, the economy grew 5.1 %, with the Q1

being the highest at 5.5 % and Q3 being the lowest at 4.5 %. “The GDP growth for the March quarter is expected to remain soft at 4.8 %, due largely to a reduction in government spending, but we are hopeful that the lower interest rate environment and improving investment should result in better growth numbers from the June quarter,” Prior-Wandesforde said in a research note. However, Nomura India chief economist Sonal Verma in a note pegged the growth expectation at a lower 4.5 % during the period, citing the cut in government spending that began in the third quarter besides weaker consumer

demand and subdued investment activities. But she said moderation in WPI inflation, which hit a three-year low at 4.9% in April, amid weak demand should pave the way for lower interest rates. DBS Bank group economist Radhika Rao in a note also pegged Q4 GDP at 4.5 % and the overall growth under 5 %. “After a dismal 4.5 % in the December quarter, we expect the final quarter number to register another sub-5 %, at 4.7 %, despite the slight improvement in the underlying momentum. This should lead the headline reading for FY13 at 5%,” Rao said.

Arbitration Finds Preference For Dispute Resolution By A Business Reporter

rbitration is emerging as a preferred dispute resolution mechanism in India and the country has become one of the top three seats for arbitration in the world along with Singapore and England, says a survey. According to a PwC survey on Corporate Attitudes and Practices towards Arbitration in India, 95 % of the companies surveyed used arbitration in isolation or in combination with other dispute resolution mechanisms. Moreover, a clear majority of companies (91%) in India which

have a dispute resolution policy, use arbitration and not litigation for resolution of future disputes, while, 82 % of the companies with arbitration experience indicated they would continue to use arbitration in the future disputes as well, reports PTI from New Delhi. The survey highlighted that the retired Supreme Court /High Court judges were a preferred choice for arbitration cases. It also revealed that India, Singapore and England are the top three seats for arbitration in the world. The top three factors that make arbitration the most preferred dis-

pute resolution mechanism include — speed, flexibility and confidentiality. “Corporate attitudes and practices towards arbitration in India point to a positive trend as more companies in India are adopting arbitration to resolve disputes, despite the challenges,” PwC India Leader Forensic Services Vidya Rajarao said. He added, “The future of arbitration is cautiously optimistic especially given the changes in the arbitration landscape in India are on the anvil and there is a steady increase in arbitration institutions in India.”

BUSINESS BRIEFS BofA-ML Sees Cut In Repo, CRR In June Review

Foreign brokerage Bank of America Merill Lynch (BofA-ML) on Monday said the Reserve Bank will go for a 0.25% cut each in repo rate and cash reserve ratio (CRR) in its upcoming mid-quarter policy review on June 17. In the last policy announcement on May 3, the central bank had cut its key rate of lending—the repo rate— by 0.25%.But bankers said they cannot cut lending rates as the liquidity pressures keep the cost of funds high. “It could cut CRR by 0.25 % on June 17 alongside a 0.25% repo rate cut,” it said in a note. BofA-ML said the liquidity deficit is running higher than the forecasts because the RBI has suspended its bond buybacks or open market operations.

HC Issues Notices To Idea Cellular, Others In 3G Case

The Delhi High Court has sought response from Idea Cellular Ltd (ICL) and its chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla on a contempt petition against the telecom major for allegedly disobeying its earlier order by providing 3G services to new customers in circles where it lacks the requisite licences. Justice Rajiv Shakdhar asked the telecom company and five others including Birla to file their response within four weeks and posted the matter for further hearing on August 5. Besides the telecom company and its chairman, the court also issued notices to Himanshu Kapania, Managing Director of ICL, Akshya Moondra, Chief Financial Officer of the firm, P Lakshminarayana and Pankaj Kapdeo, Company Secretaries of ICL.

Sebi Wants Call Data Records, Not Phone-Tapping Powers

Seeking the government’s help in getting call data records of persons being probed by it in cases of insider trading and other market manipulations, Sebi says it is not asking for powers to snoop on telephonic conversations. Sebi needs call data records (CDRs) of entities under its investigation to establish links between two or more parties, who might have had conversations among themselves before or after the incidents of insider trading or other manipulative activities in the market, it’s Chairman U K Sinha, adding “The CDRs can be very useful to establish that two parties have been talking to each other and could be related entities.“

O celebrate the platinum jubilee and to observe the 125 birth anniversary of Kulapati Dr. K.M. Munshi, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan organised a week-long festival of classical dances and included art forms like Vilasini Natyam and Yakshagana at the Bhavan's Kanji Khetsey Sabhagriha. Most of the performances were of high calibre with a few exceptions. The performers were Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and Jayashree Rajagopal for Bharata Nrityam, Guru Kalyanasundaram, Madhavapeddi Murthy, Raminder Khurana, Sanjib Bhattacharya, Sadanam Harikumaran for Kathakali, Yasoda Thakore, Kaberi Sen, Sadanand Biswas, Vidya Kolyur, Nirupama and Rajendra, Pallavi Krishnan. Renowned danseuse Dr. Subramanyam's rendering of the Meera Bhajan ‘Pyare Darshan Deejyo’ was scintillating and elevating too. The transformation of dream into reality when the devotee realises that the Lord has finally appeared, the joy and the happiness was portrayed with subtle and impeccable abhinaya, thereby receiving a standing ovation for the performance. Padma received excellent vocal support from Gayatri Kumar and Radhika from Chennai. Bangalore based husband and wife team Nirupama and Rajendra rendered a brilliant Kathak performance note-

worthy for its theatrical appeal, precision and command over the technical quality of Kathak. Shringara Ramayana was a expressional delight, Tarang for the quality of pure dance and technique and Varsha for the dramatic and exciting downpour of the monsoon. Undoubtedly Nirupama and Rajendra are among the best dancing couples of the country. One of the foremost Manipuri dancers of the country, Sanjib Bhattacharya impressed the audience with the subtle and dramatic portrayal of

Pallavi Krishnan's Mohiniattam and Yasoda Thakore's Vilasini Natyam was pleasing for its technical and expressional qualityl It was interesting to watch Vilasini Natyam due to its rustic and desi touch. Murthy rendered a brilliant Kuchipudi performance, the most impressive being the number Bhaja Govindam. On the whole it was a grand festival.

CTOR Anupam Kher is delighted about performing the play Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai for the 300th time and dedicates it to his late father Pushkar Nath Kher. The autobiographical play is presented by Anupam Kher, 58, who narrates his journey to success through a monologue. “I am happy about the 300 performances of Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai and I dedicate it to my father’s philosophy of ‘Life is too short to complain’,” Anupam says. The play, written by Ashok Patole and Kher himself, deals with the struggles that Kher had to undergo in his life before achieving success and how he played an old man in Saaransh at the young age of 28 years which was the turning point in his life. He further adds that the play has been a cathartic experience for him and people come to him saying that it’s very brave on his part to do a play like this. Real characters like Mahesh Bhatt and Subhash Ghai are also a part of the play. Kher wants to continue doing the play for the next 20 years even if he is on a wheel chair. Jitu, playing with unorthodox backhand rubber outplayed Debajeet Mukherjee and Rishi Malik 12-10, 9-11, 3-11, 12-10, 11-7 in the opening singles and then joined hands with Suraj Chandrasekhar to get the better of Debajeet and Rishi Malik9-11, 12-10, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7 to give their team 2-1 lead.

EDGY NADAL BOUNCES BACK Rafael Nadal of Spain returns a serve during his singles match against Daniel Brands of Germany during day two of the French Open at Roland Garros.

P

ARIS: Back in the day when he was but a teenager, Rafael Nadal dropped sets here at his first two French Opens. He would still win – the match and indeed the tournament – but he would be taken to four sets here and there. Never five, mind you, but the odd set had to be sacrificed to the gods of clay to keep them happy. Since 2007 (and with the exception of that match, his sole defeat at the French at the hands of Robin Soderling in 2009), he has only lost five sets on the way to winning five titles – two of them to Roger Federer (four years apart), one to Novak Djokovic in last year’s two-day final and two to John Isner in the first round in 2011. So when Daniel Brands took a 3-0 lead in the second-set tiebreak, having pocketed the first

6-4, the record-books were dusted off. The unheralded German was hitting the ball like Soderling in 2009, serving like Isner in 2011, returning like Federer in 2007. Nadal was also moving like Nadal in 2009 – where traditionally he would cover every inch of the baseline to return every shot, here he was lacklustre, coming up an inch or two short as Brands fired winners past him with alacrity. The 25-year-old 6’5” righty had no previous form at the French and had only ever won back-toback Slam matches on the Wimbledon grass, but a rise to his highest-ever ranking of No.58 courtesy of a semi-final appearance on the clay in Munich gave a hint of what was to come. And until the fourth point of that second-set tie-break, there

was genuine excitement surrounding the German’s progress and the Majorcan’s lack thereof. The prophets of doom were to be disappointed however – normal service was resumed (admittedly via a fortunate net cord) and Rafa took the breaker. And from thereon in, it was if not vintage, then at the very least functional Nadal. Where earlier he had double-faulted to hand Brands a break, now he dominated on service (at a 94% clip in the third). Where earlier he had run cumbersomely around backhands and left himself exposed to a bighitting adversary with a Federesque one-handed backhand, he now trusted his instincts and his skill-set. And the final result – a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-3 win for the record seven-time champion – was a fair one.

Haryana win third Sub-Junior Women National Championship B

HOPAL: Odisha and Haryana emerged champions in the men's and women's events respectively in the 3rd Hockey India Sub-Junior National Championship at the Aish Bagh Hockey Stadium here. Haryana women defeated holders Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy 3-2 while Odisha scored a dominating 8-0 win over Jharkhand. The goal scorers for Haryana were Sonika (3 min), Ritu (35 min) and Navneet Kaur (49 min) while Karishma (4 min) and Neelu (24 min) were on target for MPHA. For winners in men's section, Sudhir (6, 11, 45, 47) found the net four times while Nitin (33), Ashwin

(58), Punit (60) and Rakesh (65) scored a goal each. Earlier, Jharkhand defeated Chandigarh 2-1 to claim the third position in women event. For Jharkhand, Reshma struck in the 28th minute from a goalmouth scramble following a left wing move and in the 46th minute Divya Dung Dung converted a penalty corner before counterpart Saroj scored in the 64th minute via a penalty corner. In the men's category Punjab defeated Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy 1-0 in a hard-fought match to claim the third position. Punjab took the lead in the 30th minute through a penalty corner converted by Arvinder Singh.

POONAM SHINES IN CHHATTISGARH'S WIN CHENNAI: Poonam Chaturvedi played a stellar role in Chhattisgarh's 74-41 win over Jeppiaar Institute of Technology by netting 31 points in the women section of the All-India Invitation Basketball tournament here. Poonam, who is as tall as 6'10, scored at will using her height to great advantage and emerged the highest scorer in the contest. She was adjudged player of the match. Hema scored 16 points for JIT. In a match in the men's section, Indian Overseas Bank humbled Satyabama University 84-56 (HT: 42-24).

WOZNIACKI DEFIES DOUBTERS TO BEAT ROBSON It was billed as the likely shock of the first round, but in the event the only surprise was thatCaroline Wozniacki snapped a fivematch losing streak to beat the rising young Briton Laura Robson 6-3, 6-2 in 71 minutes. Robson, a 19-year-old left-hander, has developed a useful habit of pulling off big-name wins, with victories over Na Li, Kim Clijsters, Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams since last summer; moreover, when she beat Agnieszka Radwanska in Madrid she became the first British woman to defeat a top five player in 30 years. So it seemed an occasion tailor-made for her when she drew the Danish former world No.1, seeded 10 here, in the first round. But Robson, ranked 35, had never previously won a main draw match at Roland Garros.

Sofuoglu, who began the race in second position, was locked in a fierce battle for the top stop with pole sitter Sam Lowes of Yacknich Motorsport but missed the chequered flag by a whisker yesterday. The Turkish rider needed to come up with a strong performance to resurrect his title defence after a DNF in the last round in Monza. And Sofuoglu did not disappoint. He pushed championship leader Lowes till the last lap and justified the tag of being one of the favourite to claim the championship crown at the end of the season yet again.

K

OLKATA: A wrist injury might have kept Sachin Tendulkar out of the on-field action for most part of his swan-song IPL but the senior batsman had a huge role in taking Mumbai Indians to their maiden title triumph, skipper Rohit Sharma said. Tendulkar announced his retirement minutes after Mumbai were crowned champions for the first time and Sharma said the IPL Trophy meant a lot to him. "It's good to see a big smile on his face. It really shows how much this trophy means to him," Sharma said at the post-match presser. "We actually didn't get much time to talk about it as we were running all around in celebration immediately after the last ball. He also has been very busy with the celebration." Sharma said they had an idea what was coming after Tendulkar had the left-wrist injury but his involvement in the dressing room made up for his absence on the field. "It was disappointing. We knew when he missed a game, we had an idea about it that he would not be fit to play. We had an idea about it. But his presence in the dressing room was a huge boost. It gives a confidence to lot of young players. Whenever he was needed, he was there. I am really happy

tired hurt for 38 in their May 13 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad which became the iconic batsman's last innings as he went on to miss five matches for his franchise.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan Singh and Sachin Tendulkar celebrate with the IPL 6 trophy in the dressing room in Kolkata. what we did today." "It was unfortunate he missed last few games because of injury. But you can't really do much when you're injured. But he was completely involved

keeping a close eye along with Anil Kumble, Ricky Ponting and John Wright. He spoke to each individual if he felt there was a need." The Mumbai Indians opener re-

KUMBLE'S INPUTS HELPED ME GET BACK BOUNCE AND DRIFT: BHAJJI Harbhajan Singh managed to rediscover his form in the sixth edition of the IPL by relying on flight and the feisty off-spinner attributes his fantastic run in the tourney to former spin partner Anil Kumble. "I am proud to have made a significant contribution in Mumbai Indians' triumphant run in IPL 6 and Anil bhai deserves the lion's share of the credit. As the Team Mentor, his watchful eyes and invaluable inputs helped me rediscover my old touch," Harbhajan, who finished as third highest wicket-taker with 24 wickets told PTI in an interview. "Since Anil bhai retired in 2008, we haven't spend this lengthy amount of time discussing cricket. He asked me why I was trying to do things which don't come naturally to me. "He (Kumble) told me that my strength is bounce which I extract and the drift in my deliveries. Rather than trying to push the deliveries fast, I relied more on flight and it worked wonders," the senior off-spinner said.

I’ve to face reality, perfect time to retire from IPL: Sachin No plans to dismantle team: K Pailan Arrows K

OLKATA: Pailan Group categorically stated that they have no plans to withdraw their support to the AIFF developmental side but acknowledged that there was a financial dispute with the game's body and they expect an early resolution. Media reports had claimed the group may end their association with the side, Pailan Arrows. A senior AIFF official was quoted as saying that the football team is yet to play around 70 lakh sponsors' payment. Pailan Group shot back and said that the AIFF also owed them Rs 44 lakh. "It is true that Pailan Group has to settle the due of 70-lakh odd rupees with the AIFF. But it is also true that the AIFF has a long overdue of INR 44 lakh to help run the FIFA-AIFF Pailan Football Academy. We never said we would not settle the dues but we're also expecting a payment of INR 44 lakh," the corporate group said in a release. "Pailan Group has taken a vow to not slip from its resolute commitment to the Pailan Arrows project and is confident that a situation, calling for dismantling of the team will not arise," the release added. The group also said developing a team and infrastructure for the game is the aim, still dear to their heart. "In keeping with the spirit of nurturing young talent and developing football in India, Pailan Group had joined hands with the AIFF with a focus on infrastructure. It's not for nothing that the Pailan Group has spent a total of INR 25 crore on developing three FIFA-approved football grounds inside the Bengal Pailan Park, and the best one of the three cost about INR 10-12 crore to build.

OLKATA: Senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who called it quits from the IPL after Mumbai Indians lifted the title here, said it was the perfect time to retire from the Twenty20 event as he has to "face the reality" after turning 40. "I think this is the right time to stop playing IPL. I am 40. I have to face the reality. I had decided that this would be my last season. And now the ending is perfect," Tendulkar said after Mumbai beat Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs at the Eden Gardens last night to lift their maiden IPL trophy. Tendulkar, who played 78 IPL matches accumulating 2334 runs at an average of 34.83, had to stay out of the final after failing to recover from a left hand injury that he picked up a fortnight ago in a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The veteran, who scored one century and 13 halfcenturies during his overall IPL stint, played just 14 matches this season making 287 runs at an average of 22.07 with 54 being his highest. "For the World Cup I had to wait for 21 years and this (the IPL) for six years. So, It's never too late. This is my last IPL. It's the perfect way to end it," a jovial Tendulkar said after his team's triumph. "I have got to be realistic here. I've enjoyed my six seasons with MI. It's been fantastic journey. This season was superb. We thought our third season was the best but this one is the icing on the cake," he added. The affable right-hander, however, did not specify whether he would compete for Mumbai in the

Champions League Twenty20 which is scheduled for October. "I can't wait to hold this trophy. I waited for six years. I can never thank the fans enough. A big thank you to all the supporters who enjoyed cricket. Cricket is the winner and we have been able to produce some fantastic cricket here," he added. Asked about how it felt playing at 40, Tendulkar said, "Anil (Kumble) said that 40 is just a number. We

have worked hard together. Even on optional practice because despite all the travelling everyone turned up. Things don't come easily, you have to work hard for them. It's exciting but you have to alter your body clock in the grind of IPL because matches finish after or close to midnight. And, sometimes we catch a flight at eight in the morning making all the adjustments that are required," he added.

SHOCKER: CSK BAG IPL FAIR PLAY AWARD

31

LONE MAN STANDING... BCCI president and Chennai Super Kings owner N. Srinivasan during the presentation ceremony of the IPL finals. Chennai Super Kings won the Fair Play Award despite Srinivasan’s son-in-law and erstwhile ‘Team Principal’ Gurunath Meiyappan in police custody for allegations of betting during the IPL season.

K

OLKATA: They might be embroiled in the spot-fixing scandal, but IPL 6 runners-up Chennai Super Kings won the Fair Play award even though the points table was missing from the tournament website. Rajasthan Royals were at the pole position of the Fair Play table followed by Chennai Super Kings at the midway stage. But after both the teams were mired in the scandal, the table went missing from the website raising speculation that the award had been discarded. So, it came as a big surprise when Super Kings were awarded the trophy that is adjudged by the umpires on the basis of their on-field conduct. Later, interacting with the media, team coach Stephen Fleming said CSK were deserving winners of the Fair Play Award despite the hard last few days. "We do pride ourselves for being at the top for fair play. You can't take that away from us," Fleming said at the post-match presser. "We are proud of the way we play our game on the field. We are always right near the top every year, it's one of the key components of the side. We want to play the game hard. But we want to be very fair."

Azad demands Srini’s ouster NEW DELHI: As demands for N Srinivasan's resignation as BCCI President continued, three important members of the cricket board parried questions on the issue even as the beleaguered chief complained that the media was hounding him. BJP MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad made an oblique criticism of IPL Chairman Rajeev Shukla and his party leader Arun Jaitley, both important office-bearers of BCCI, as to why they were not raising their voice against Srinivasan's continuance. "Where are those keepers of high moral values in both UPA and NDA...Why are not they raising voice on the removal of Srinivasan over IPL scandal?" the BJP MP asked.

SRINIVASAN BOOED BY CAPACITY EDEN GARDENS CROWD KOLKATA: Under fire BCCI president N Srinivasan was booed by a capacity Eden Gardens crowd as his name was announced during the post-match presentation ceremony. The moment Ravi Shastri announced the name of the controversial BCCI president, there was a loud jeer from the 61,000 odd crowd present at the stadium which reminded a lot of how former IOA chief Suresh Kalmadi was booed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, 2010. Srinivasan decided not to resign from board president's post despite his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan being arrested by Mumbai Police on charges of betting and passing on information to the bookies. Clad in navy blue suit and with a sky blue shirt, Srinivasan wore a gloomy look during the presentation ceremony and was not certainly amused when there was collective booing as soon as Shastri announced his name. The second time when his name was announced to present the winners' trophy, there was a deathly silence followed by another round of jeers

with most of the spectators leaving for home. As has been his superstition over the years, Srinivasan never watches CSK's matches live and only comes during final when the match is nearing end. There were rumours that BCCI president is not coming to the ground and will not be present at the closing ceremony as he was not around for the maximum time of the match. However a CAB official informed that "Srinivasan was indeed in the hotel and would arrive at the end of the match."

THE MEDIA IS HOUNDING ME: SRINIVASAN CHENNAI: A defiant and combative BCCI President, who has decided to hang on to his position despite the IPL spot-fixing scandal, said his resignation is being sought only by a "hounding media". Srinivasan, whose son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings CEO Gurunath Meiyappan has been arrested for alleged involvement in betting, reached here after attending the IPL final last night in Kolkata, where the crowd booed him during the presentation ceremony. "The press is hounding me, the media is hounding me. I have

already clarified everything in the press conference. I have no reason to resign," Srinivasan retorted when journalists at the airport asked him about the scandal and whether he should resign on moral grounds. Srinivasan had on Sunday held a press conference hours before the final to declare that he would not step down. He also announced the setting up of a three-member enquiry panel to investigate the scandal, that led to the arrest of three Rajasthan Royals players. The BCCI president asserted that he has done nothing wrong and rejected reports of a revolt against him in BCCI. He made it clear that he would not be "railroaded, pushed and threatened to quit". "My support is complete and not one member in BCCI has asked for my resignation", he had said. "I have a job and we will act strictly. I assure you, the BCCI will act without fear or favour to investigate and if player, franchise or owners have breached any rules, action will be taken", he said. The three-member enquiry commission will consist of two members of the IPL Operations Committee and an independent person in whose appointment he will have no role.

Would trade my Orange Cap for IPL trophy: Hussey K

OLKATA: IPL 6's most-prolific batsman Mike Hussey has said that he would any day trade his Orange Cap for the trophy that eluded two-time champions Chennai Super Kings this year. The 38-year-old Aussie, who retired from international cricket earlier this year, was presented the Orange Cap last night for being the highest run-getter in this season, with 733 runs under his belt. "I'd give the Orange Cap back away for the Trophy definitely. It's quite an honour to have got it but it would have been nice to perform on the last day and in the big game," Hussey said after CSK lost to Mumbai Indians by 23 runs in the IPL 6

final at the Eden Gardens here Sunday night. Hussey was unhappy with the fact that despite being the most consistent team this season, CSK faltered at the big match. "That's how the game goes, doesn't it? T20 cricket is such a fickle game. You've got to stay positive and philosophical about it. We've had a fantastic

season and it's just unfortunate that we got beaten by a better team on the day and we couldn't get over the line," he told IPL website. "But we can still be very proud of our efforts throughout the course of this season. It's been brilliant." Chasing a modest 149 in the title clash last night, CSK's batsmen did not have the best of outings as MI bowlers restricted them to 125 for nine. "We obviously got off to a very bad start, losing two wickets in the first over. That set the negative tone for us and then we just kept losing wickets; couldn't get a nice, busy partnership going, which would have given us a chance," Hussey said.

Spot-fixing scandal “disrupted” CSK’s IPL 6 campaign: Fleming

KOLKATA: The spot-fixing scandal had "disrupted" Chennai Super Kings' campaign in the just-concluded IPL, coach Stephen Fleming said after they finished runners-up to Mumbai Indians in the sixth edition of the Twenty20 tournament. "We are a very calculated side usually, but it's really been a very difficult last week. Off the field, we were to experience something we had not been used to. But certainly it (our campaign) was disrupted," Fleming said at the post-match press conference after CSK lost to MI by 23 runs in the title clash at the Eden Gardens. "We had a pretty good IPL. It was trouble free till the last week. There was an element of consistency in a topsy-turvy tournament. We love winning but we are also pretty humble in defeat," he added. Chasing a modest 149, CSK, a twotime former champions, were restricted to 125 for nine in their fifth final appearance, as Mumbai Indians lifted their maiden IPL title. Indian cricket was recently thrown into disarray because of the IPL spot-fixing scandal which led to the arrest of three players, including Test pacer S Sreesanth, and several bookies with underworld connections. The scandal reached the doorstep of BCCI President N Srinivasan with the Mumbai Police arresting his son-in-law and CSK owner Gurunath Meiyappan for alleged involvement in betting. "We discussed that (spot-fixing) yesterday. How much affect it had on them in the final, each player would have to answer that. I acknowledged in my statement yesterday that it had been a tough week," the CSK coach said.
