INDEPENDENT CO-ED DAY SCHOOL FOR AGES 11-18 SIXTH FORM PROSPECTUS AND SUBJECT
“ Polite and chatty, they have an air of feeling comfortable with themselves and the world.”
King’s Worcester Sixth Form is the next step in their educational career for approximately 300 pupils, around 150 in each year. In addition to pupils moving into the Sixth Form from King’s Year 11, up to 35 others join from both maintained and independent schools.
A successful Sixth Form education is extremely important in helping to develop young people who will contribute positively to society by leading fulfilled and unselfish lives. Here at King’s Worcester we engender clear moral values and a sense of purpose, a strong academic focus and a stimulating environment, all bound together by a culture of encouragement, enjoyment and celebration.
All this, we believe, builds the confidence and resilience students need, and promotes independence and intellectual enquiry.
The challenges we provide are stimulating and enjoyable and the focus is always on the best possible preparation for life beyond King’s. Our aim is to help young people gain all the vital knowledge, academic results, life skills and strength of character that they will need to tackle future challenges.
We are proud of the confidence with which our students embrace the world beyond King’s, both university life and the world of work, and we are equally proud of the passion and dedication they continue to show towards the King’s community long after they have left.

The two years of the Sixth Form at King’s are inevitably over all too quickly and, almost from day one, students’ eyes are opened to the myriad opportunities in their life beyond school. The world of work is changing so rapidly that nobody can begin to predict the future and, in particular, precisely what careers will exist. Every year, most of our Upper Sixth continue their educational journey, with many going to some of the leading universities in the country such as St Andrew’s, Durham, Exeter, Bristol, UCL, and Cardiff.
There are often many questions: what degree should I consider, which university is best for my degree, where do I start with my application?
Our Careers Team, which includes our Careers Lead, Careers advisors, Head of UCAS applications
and specialist Medical, Oxbridge and International Applications Leads, along with our Head of Sixth Form and House Tutors, are all on hand to offer advice and guide you throughout the application process.
Not only will you have access to Unifrog, an online platform which helps you discover the university course which is right for you, but you’ll also have support through a programme of events, workshops and talks to ensure that you’re aware of the range of opportunities beyond school. At our careers events you will have the chance to network with individuals (many of whom are Old Vigornians) and get insider information on how to make your way into specific professions.
In addition to this, our well-resourced careers library is packed full of useful up-to-date information, vital
for offering the opportunity for you to explore your options. Whatever route you decide to take, university or apprenticeship programme, you’ll receive help navigating the application process and support with writing CVs too, as well as workshops on how to deal with interviews and assessment centres.
Our strong alumni community welcomes back numerous former students to the School to share insight into the careers and further education routes they chose. They also provide an invaluable networking opportunity and support, helping students after their graduation. The King’s Community’s support continues long after you leave – virtually via LinkedIn and also via numerous alumni events.

Whether it is planning a presentation on behalf of your Young Enterprise Company, instructing a group of younger cadets in the Combined Cadet Force, or marshalling the massed voices of your House for the annual Song Competition, there are myriad leadership opportunities available at King’s.
There are many styles of leadership and you’ll be encouraged to act as a leader or mentor in a way that starts from you and your interests; we’ll support you as you step out of your comfort zone, stand up and make yourself heard. In this way you’ll build resilience, individual strength of character, confidence and the life skills required to move forward into the wider world of Higher Education and employment.
But we’re not an inward-looking community; through our wide range of charitable endeavours and service to the wider community of Worcester and beyond, we also face outwards to support and enrich the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves.
Over and above the core curriculum, we’ve put together a Life Skills programme for Sixth Form students which is designed to ensure that you are fully equipped with practical independent skills that prepare you for further education, life opportunities, experiences, and the world of work.
Students take six modules, each for two periods a week and lasting half a term each. You may select from modules such as Careers, Personal Finance, Car Maintenance, Cookery, DIY and Study Skills and Techniques.
These Life Skills modules complement our existing Personal Social Health Economic (PSHE) programme which all students take, including modules on mental health, alcohol, e-safety and relationships and sex education.
Throughout each term, our Head of Sixth Form and Head of PSHE organise a wide variety of interesting seminars and talks from external speakers. These have included Andrew Wright, an award-winning journalist and personal communication specialist, Chip Somers, a former drug addict turned government adviser, Emma Cole, owner of Positive Voice and raising awareness of HIV and Dr Eleanor Draegar offering advice and guidance on relationships and sex education.
Leadership
Sixth Formers are given considerable opportunities to act as leaders and mentors in a variety of areas, building essential confidence, communication and self-assurance life skills. At King’s, leadership takes many forms. It can be the time when a team captain encourages her players to dig deep and score the winning goal. It can be deciding to go in the other direction on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, as the rain beats against you. It can be the moment when a student lends an ear to a Year 7 pupil who just wants someone to talk to.
Our bustling programme of co-curricular activities, trips and expeditions is specifically designed to enhance the learning experience and provide opportunities for us to guide you in how to lead effectively, whilst also giving you the space to discover your own leadership style. From Heads of School, to School Captains, School Monitors to Peer Mentors, there are opportunities a plenty for you to represent the School, support younger pupils and be the catalyst for change across the Foundation.
“ I am grateful to be given the opportunity to be a School Monitor and Senior Scholar. What I loved about the Monitor role was the ability to make a positive impact on the school that I have gone to for over 15 years. I felt I could make a real difference by speaking to pupils and staff around the school, hearing their thoughts and feeding that back to senior members of staff.”
“ My role as Co-Chair of the School Council has allowed me to work closely alongside pupils. I’ve enjoyed acting as their voice providing input on day-to-day school matters and the more strategic matters too.”
“ Whilst being one of the Senior Scholars is a big responsibility, it allowed me an unparalleled view into the academic life of many other year groups and insight into their successes. Hearing the Lower Sixth talk about universities and knowing that I can offer mature and sensible advice is an important responsibility for the Senior Scholar. In addition, seeing the younger years gain experience and competence is truly remarkable.”
George C-F – Head of School, Senior Scholar, School Monitor and Football Captain
“ The role of a Cadet, Senior Non-Commissioned Officer in the Combined Cadet Force has allowed me to develop my leadership skills considerably. Leadership is extremely important in the CCF as it is important to keep moral high while enacting change to improve life as a cadet. What I love about the role is that it allows me to work with the younger cadets to make sure that they have as great an experience in the CCF as I have had.”
Archie M – Senior CCF Cadet NCO and Rugby Team Captain
The Performing Arts play a prominent role in the life of the Sixth Form at King’s. Many students actively participate in the wide variety of music and drama groups, orchestras, choirs and theatre productions, performed in any one of our first-class performance spaces. Our A-level Drama and Theatre course combines an academic study of dramatic theory and the work of practitioners who have shaped the development of theatre practice with the advancement of the students’ own practical skills. It is ideal for those who have a strong interest in drama and the theatre, or have strong performance or production skills that they wish to develop.
For a school with such a close and historic relationship with the Cathedral, it is no surprise that music, in all its forms, is incredibly strong at King’s. Music at A-level is both challenging and rewarding. The course is both theoretical and practical involving the study
of set works including classical and jazz. It includes a significant performance element with an externally examined recital, as well as composition and harmony. King’s has a magnificent, self-contained Art School built over three floors. The light and spacious building offers five studios, a range of workshops, a gallery, an art library and IT space.
The Art Department has its roots in the fine-art tradition and all students have the opportunity to explore painting, textiles, print-making, mixed-media, digital media and sculpture. In the Sixth Form at King’s, students follow the two-year Cambridge Pre-U qualification.
It is a stimulating and exciting course that encourages students to think deeply about art and develop their own individual styles. Upper Sixth artists follow independent programmes of study that build upon their existing skills and reflect their personal interests. Each Upper Sixth student has an individual studio space that encourages the development of ambitious, large-scale work. Our examination results at every level are outstanding and we are regarded as a centre of national excellence.
Although our students work very hard to achieve academically, in the Sixth Form at King’s there is a huge range of opportunities to enjoy a comprehensive choice of sports, whatever your preference or level of ability. King’s has a proud sporting tradition with netball, hockey, rugby, football, cricket and athletics teams all competing at a very high level. We have long been considered one of the top sporting day schools in the country.
Rowing is also a major sport and our award-winning state-of-the-art boathouse is an amazing facility. Our heated indoor swimming pool is not only used for swimming but also watersports including sub-aqua and canoeing. Fencing and basketball are also popular.
Alongside this you will be able to benefit from our top-class gym and dedicated strength and conditioning coach. You will have access to the gym every morning, at lunchtime and after school and during the holidays. We also offer a Physical Education A-level that is an ideal preparation for a career in physiotherapy, leisure or sports management and administration.
King’s have delivered the nationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Scheme for many years. Over 130 pupils in Years 10 – 13 have successfully completed the expedition section of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the last year, facing a wide range of challenges and overcoming them with customary King’s determination.
Resilience, communication, teamwork and dedication are key life skills that you can gain from DofE, skills which can develop your depth of character and you as a whole person, which is why these awards are held in such high regard by universities and employers alike.
For the Sixth Form DofE Gold Award, you take on a personal programme of activity covering Volunteering, Physical activities, Skills
development and Expedition for an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad. This is a serious undertaking and covers all 4 sections, with the additional activity being residential.
This year’s residential saw three groups of Sixth Formers endure tough weather conditions: ferocious winds in Snowdonia at Easter, and extreme heat in the Lake District in the summer.
Collectively, 9,000 km of distance was covered over tough terrain, carrying heavy packs an incredible achievement for the students involved!
And, if that’s not enough, when you have received your award, you will be invited to Buckingham Palace where a member of the royal family will present you with your Gold Award certificate.
Young Enterprise has been a very successful and popular Lower Sixth co-curricular activity for many years, available for all students in the year group. Teams of Year 12 (Lower Sixth) students set up their companies in September and run them as a proper business through the Young Enterprise organization, who provide them with an HSBC business account and appropriate insurance cover. The companies meet each week, firstly to decide on directors’ roles, then build the company, carry out market research and design and develop a product or service for sale nationally.
After a few months, the teams present their ideas to the Showcase Event, the Worcester and Hereford round of the
competition, by submitting a 10-page report and a four-minute introduction of their project, followed by probing interviews from a panel of judges from the world of business and commerce.
Students in the past have done incredibly well, winning awards for their efforts.
The value of the Young Enterprise experience in equipping young people for the world of work is widely recognised, developing teamwork, perseverance, the skills of target setting and the ability to work towards a common goal.
The business skills you learn are second to none and many students have gone on to run their own successful companies as a career.
The School organises a contingent of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) of which it is justly proud. Over 150 pupils across the Senior School and Sixth Form are members of the two sections – Army and RAF.
Enhancing the personal development of students and providing them with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, self-reliance and resourcefulness is at the heart of our CCF provision.
Alongside weekly training, you will have the opportunity to take part in survival skills, assault courses, fly
and glide, climb and abseil, take command when leading cadets, compete in national competitions and also use the King’s shooting range which is located in the Keyes Building.
Each year the contingent runs two camp activities in the summer holidays (Army and RAF). There are also many opportunities to attend camps and activities run externally, such as a sixweek camp in Canada, adventurous training, national leadership courses, and gliding or flying scholarships.
Whether it’s catching up on the latest from the Houses of Commons and exploring Churchill War Rooms on a Politics trip to London, a Modern Language exchange to France or Spain, or a Classics week-long museum-filled trip to Italy, you will see that most of our courses offer the opportunity to experience new cultures and places.
Our Physics Department runs a biennial trip to CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research and, along with our Biology and Chemistry Departments,
arranges enrichment and extension trips and visits throughout the year. A biennial Music tour, involving the School Choir and Chamber Orchestra, has flown to Malta to perform numerous concerts and our Drama Department runs an annual theatre residential trips to London with a jam-packed agenda of shows, Pineapple Studio performances and behind the scenes theatre tours.
Our ever-popular bi-annual sports tours, such as the recent netball, hockey and rugby tours to South Africa
and cricket tour to India offer students the chance to see, experience and play against local communities, as well as the opportunity to enjoy of a raft of exhilarating activities such as windsurfing and scuba diving, all whilst visiting some of the most beautiful landmarks and places in the world.
“ King’s Sixth Form is full of opportunities. Be this in the classroom, in co-curricular clubs, on the sports fields or exploring the world on the many trips and expeditions, there are so many opportunities and something for everyone to enjoy. ”

“ I am really relieved that all my hard work has paid off. The support from the teachers has been fantastic, especially the Art Department; they have always challenged me to reach my full potential.”
Catherine C – A* Art, A Economics, A History
The department is rooted in the Fine-Art tradition and all students have the opportunity to explore painting, textiles, print-making, mixed-media, digital media and sculpture.
The A-level qualification is a two-year course, beginning with an exploration of drawing and a series of short projects that encourage creativity and original thinking. As the Lower Sixth develops, and throughout the Upper Sixth year, students follow their own self-directed programme of study to explore areas of personal interest. Students are encouraged to work with ambition and independence to build upon skills learnt lower down the School. The course culminates in an end of year exhibition curated by the students, to which all friends, family and staff are invited. The key to the success of the students is that they are treated like practicing artists and are allowed to develop their work in the direction of their choice; they are encouraged to be as ambitious as possible.
Visiting artists exhibit work in the Art School’s Sir Terry Frost Gallery, and deliver talks and workshops. There are frequent opportunities to develop work outside lesson time; studios are open every evening and there are a number of weekend workshops, including life drawing, which take place throughout the year. Students benefit from a programme of gallery visits and interviews with artists, organised throughout England and abroad, including the opportunity to take part in our biennial foreign trip. Previous destinations have included New York, Berlin, China, Barcelona and Venice.
Our examination results are outstanding and we are regarded as a national centre of excellence. Art at King’s has an excellent track record for students
gaining entry onto Art Foundation courses or directly onto degree courses at some of the most prestigious universities in the country. A number of former students have studied Fine Art, Textiles, Architecture, Digital Media and design-based courses at The Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford, The Slade School of Fine Art, Cambridge University, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Chelsea. A number of former students are now working as full-time practising artists, designers and architects.

Free from the constraints often experienced in lower years, students studying Design & Technology at A-level are encouraged to think and work with real creativity and purpose. Seeking to think beyond the obvious and approaching real issues from innovative angles, students closely follow practices seen in industry.
Sixth formers studying DT at King’s develop a real depth of understanding and complexity in their work that sets them up as competent designers. They are sensitive to the needs of their target markets and end users and the environmental issues associated with their design proposals and are able to communicate their ideas ahead of bringing them to life in the workshop.
Design & Technology has a huge relevance to today and in improving tomorrow. The department provides a wonderful stepping stone towards a career from a truly vast range of design fields including Product & Industrial Design, Interior & Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Architecture and Engineering. Specifically, it meets Art at one end, Physics at the other and covers all that’s in between.
In DT, students relish their learning and without exception achieve far more than they ever thought possible.

This course combines academic study with a development of practical skills and is ideal for those who love drama and have theatre experience and evident talent as an actor, designer or technician.
A-level Drama and Theatre will enhance any university application, showing you are a strong communicator who is resilient, reliable and able to work supportively and creatively with others under pressure. You should enjoy going to the theatre and appreciate the arts. Past students have gone on to study a range of subjects at university including English, Art, Business Studies and Law, as well as Drama and Dance or professional theatre training at drama school.
Assessment is by a combination of practical and written coursework and examination. Students need a willingness to work practically and co-operatively with others in a generous, supportive and uninhibited way.
A disciplined approach to independent research is also required, as well as a willingness to read widely around both the subject and the contexts of the plays studied.
The course involves additional time watching plays and rehearsing as well as the usual homework assignments. There are regular theatre visits and rehearsals after school, at lunchtimes or at weekends. There is an annual theatre tour to London, usually during the Spring Term.

Author Margaret Attwood wrote, ‘The answers you get from literature depend on the questions you pose’; English Literature is taught at King’s as a subject which challenges the intellect, stirs the imagination, broadens perspectives and develops significant skills.
Enjoyment of reading and the subject at GSCE are good reasons for studying the subject at A-level, but students rightly identify it as a strong, highly-regarded academic subject welcomed by universities whatever a student’s degree discipline. It sits well with a wide variety of arts, languages and humanities subjects and has been taken by a number of students whose interests are scientific.
Students, working towards written examinations and analytical and creative coursework, will enjoy a variety of literary genres and styles drawn from different time periods, and are expected to take an active part in discussions and group work, study independently and be prepared to undertake essay writing, research and preparation on a weekly basis to develop their understanding of contexts, interpretations and literary effects.

Classical Civilisation brings students face to face with the cultures of Greece and Rome through the reading of literature in translation. Knowledge of Latin or Greek is not required, nor is a GCSE in Classical Civilisation, but in order to succeed a real curiosity about the past and a willingness to engage with new ideas is needed.
Discover a world that is in some respects quite alien to ours yet in others, remarkably similar. English, Drama and Theatre Studies and Art combine particularly well with this course, but it adds variety and breadth to any set of options. Key skills developed include literary analysis and appreciation, evaluation and interpretation of evidence and essay writing. Homer’s Odyssey will explain the concept of heroism with its associated ideas of justice and revenge and honour and reputation. Students will discover the use of propaganda by the emperor Augustus, and will learn about the founding fathers of modern democracy. The epic poem, The Aeneid, which has fascinated generations of readers with its layers of meaning, will enlighten you with its focus on the nature of human responsibility, concepts of heroism and the role of the gods. Economics is about choice and the impact of our choices on each other. It relates to every aspect of our lives, from the decisions we make as individuals or families to the structures created by governments and firms.
The economic way of thinking can help us make better choices. Economics is best suited, although not exclusively so, to those with a proven mathematical background. Both microeconomics and macroeconomics are studied, ranging from basic supply and demand principles to the study of central economic issues such as unemployment, inflation and the UK’s role in both the European and world economy.
Economics is taught across two academic years and assessed by three examinations. Students attend the annual ‘Economics in Action’ conference at Warwick University. Each year a group of candidates are prepared for Oxbridge application, to read Economics, PPE, Economics & Management and other related courses.

Geography is an intellectually challenging and relevant subject that stimulates an interest in and a sense of wonder about places, people and the environment. It bridges the gap between the arts and sciences, and develops a wide variety of skills that are transferable to higher education courses and the world of work.
Both Physical and Human topics are studied at A-level, with an emphasis on the links between the two. Students will develop a deeper understanding of our complex and dynamically changing world by considering economic, social, environmental and political issues. An additional feature of the course is an individual investigation on an area of the specification that most interests you. Enjoyment of the subject at GCSE and an appreciation of its relevance to our lives are good reasons for studying Geography further. The department is well resourced with interactive digital display screens in all classrooms and a research room with 16 computers and a range of specialised texts which Sixth Formers may use in study periods. Fieldwork is particularly enjoyable and serves as a significant tool to develop geographical skills and understanding. All Lower Sixth students attend a residential field course.

By studying History you will explore and discover the development and consequences of major events and movements affecting Europe and the wider world.
Studying History develops a range of skills including the communication of complex ideas, the ability to analyse and evaluate, the competence to make judgements based on evidence and to engage in research. History provides an ideal foundation for any future career. A wide variety of professions including law, journalism and the media, business and management, and medical sciences view this subject favourably.
One of the great advantages of history at A-level is that it is an intrinsically fascinating subject, covering both British and European history. Topics covered include a depth of study of Winston Churchill and the overthrow of Louis XVI during the French Revolution as well as a synoptic assessment of Russian and its rulers in the 19th and 20th Centuries. In the Upper Sixth the independent study offers a broad choice and an opportunity to shape your own course and gain experience of writing a research-based study, a vital skill in any future study. Politics is a challenging and exciting subject, constantly changing and developing, one which requires students to be aware of current affairs. In Politics there are no unchangeable truths; instead, students have to assess and respond to a variety of approaches and doctrines.
Politics Is an excellent A-level to take in combination with any other subject as it is stimulating and encourages individuals to think. This latter quality is why so many business people, lawyers, teachers and even politicians have taken politics at A-level.
Seminars at King’s have been held by the MP for Worcester and the Bishop of Worcester. Our students prepare and host Political Fora which are modelled on ‘Question Time’, with the panel including local MPs. councillors and even a Lord or two. The course at A-level includes a wide-ranging study of UK and US politics. This provides students with a grounding in political theory, at the same time as encouraging students to develop a critical awareness of contemporary events. Students gain a thorough understanding of the two political systems as well as an up-to-date understanding of the wider world.

Religion and Philosophy offers a unique opportunity for students to think about some of the things that really matter: Is there a God? Why is there evil and suffering in the world? Is war ever justified? Is there life after death? What is the purpose of life?
The answers to most of these questions are hotly debated. Students are therefore required to think critically so that they can identify good arguments from bad. In other words, students learn to think philosophically.
Our A-level course provides a rigorous intellectual challenge. Research in the United States has demonstrated that students studying Philosophy score higher on the university graduate entrance examinations than students who major in any other field of study apart from Mathematics and the Natural Sciences. Furthermore, Philosophy scores higher than every other subject in developing students’ verbal skills. By learning to express your arguments orally and in writing, the A-level in Religion and Philosophy will thus prepare you for the rigours of university and good careers beyond. Your brain will hurt at times but, as Aristotle taught, excellence only comes through repeated mental endeavour.
A further benefit of the course is that it will improve your religious literacy, an important skill in a world, for good and ill and everything in between, that is still dominated by religion. Students prepare for three papers in Philosophy, Ethics, and Theology. There is no coursework.

Joseph A – A* in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, A in Chemistry
The dictionary definition of Physics is, “The study of matter, energy, and the interaction between them”, but what that really means is that Physics is about asking fundamental questions and trying to answer them by observing and experimenting.
Physicists ask really big questions like, ‘How did the universe begin?’ and ‘What are the basic building blocks of matter?’ If you think these questions are fascinating, then you’ll like A-level Physics. Physics is expressed in the language of Mathematics, so if you are going to study Physics, you will need to get to grips with a certain amount of Maths. A-level Maths isn’t a requirement, but it really helps. If you aspire to studying Physics or engineering at university, then Maths A-level is essential and Further Maths is strongly recommended.
Experimental work is a vital part of Physics, and this is a great strength of the Physics Department at King’s. Four well-equipped laboratories and enthusiastic staff make practical work a central part of learning to be a physicist. The course features many modern topics (i.e. since 1900) in Physics such as Quantum Theory, Materials Science, Relativity, Cosmology and Particle Physics, as well as more familiar areas like Electricity and Mechanics. There is also a great deal of emphasis on practical applications.
We run regular subject clinics to provide extra support for students and will also set up weekly sessions with students to help them prepare for admissions tests and interviews when they go through the university application process.

Biology is a diverse subject that will help you understand how plants and animals ‘work’, the effects of our activities upon the planet and how species have evolved. The department is housed in its own building and has a well stocked library, a large video bank and computers.
The A-level Biology specification provides our Sixth Form students with a broad, relevant course and is a suitable preparation for a wide variety of university degrees, particularly Medicine, Veterinary Science and Human Sciences, as well as the broaderbased Biological Sciences. Biology is often taken in combination with other science A-levels (Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics) but can complement any field of study. A good performance in GCSE sciences (separate sciences or dual award) and preferably in Mathematics is a necessary basis for the course.
Results at A-level have been very good; they have been achieved by the hard work that comes from the high motivation of genuinely interested and committed students.
Students are expected to learn to study both independently and as part of a team. We expect you to work hard, and in return you will enjoy an interesting course and great results.

Computer Science is a course that is relevant to the modern and changing world of computing. It is not a course aimed at those who want to use computers for design or gameplay. It is aimed at those who want a better understanding of how computers work at base level and for those interested in careers in the IT world.
There is a focus on programming and, although there is not a requirement to have previously studied programming languages, it would certainly be an advantage. Computational thinking is at the heart of the course, helping students to develop skills to solve problems, design systems and understand human and machine intelligence. 20% of the course is a programming project where students analyse a problem and design and create a solution that utilises modern technology.
The course gives students a clear progression into higher education, as it was designed after consultation with members of BCS, CA and top universities.

Chemistry is a fascinating and engaging subject that helps us understand how the universe works.
Chemistry is everywhere. It is in the food you eat, clothes you wear, water you drink, medicines you take, the air you breathe … you name it, it is Chemistry! Chemistry will also help us solve some of the biggest issues that the world faces such as climate change, plastic pollution and energy shortages, as well as finding medicines to eradicate diseases.
At King’s we adopt a practical, skills-based approach to learning A–level Chemistry where we build on the knowledge of GCSEs. This in turn will provide the knowledge and skills that you can take with you in your future, whatever career pathway you choose. As a result, Chemistry is well respected by universities and provides a gateway to a variety of possible careers. For example, it is a key science for those who wish to start a career in Medicine or Veterinary Science. A-level Mathematics is a much sought-after and well regarded qualification, both as a subject in its own right and for entry to a wide variety of courses in Higher Education, a varied course which is challenging, rewarding and enjoyable.
At times it can be a very demanding course and achieving a 7–9 at GCSE does not guarantee success. This will come with resilience, hard work and a love of the subject and its beauty. Three compulsory branches of Mathematics are studied:
Pure Maths (two-thirds of the content), Statistics (one-sixth of the content) and Mechanics (one-sixth of the content).
Pure Maths: algebra and trigonometry, familiar from GCSE, will be studied in more depth, and further applications of calculus will be introduced for the first time. All the Pure content is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and techniques necessary to manipulate and solve mathematically formulated problems in various fields of study.
Statistics: a practical subject in constant everyday use and, at the same time, one with a strong theoretical background. It has applications in both the sciences and humanities. Important ideas are introduced early on in a simple form, and then built upon and developed more theoretically later on. As well as data presentation, students meet elementary probability, the idea of a theoretical distribution and formal hypothesis testing.
This content is particularly supportive for students studying subjects such as Geography, Biology, Business and Economics and those considering Psychology and Medicine.
Mechanics: learn how to describe the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them, from cars in the street to colliding particles. You will learn the technique of mathematical modelling.
Many of the ideas you will meet form an essential introduction to modern fields of study such as Cybernetics, Robotics, Biomechanics and Sports Science, as well as Engineering, Physics and Architecture.
Maths students at King’s will benefit from the opportunity to take part in the Senior Maths Challenge and Senior Maths Team Challenge, as well as preparation for the MAT, PAT and STEP entrance exams, and attend ‘Maths Inspiration’ lectures. Many students go on to study maths-related courses at top universities every year.
Students will have covered the content required to take AS level Maths by the end of Year 12.

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and how it dictates and influences our behaviour. It encompasses the biological influences, social pressures, and environmental factors that affect how people think, act, and feel. Students will gain a richer and deeper understanding of Psychology, helping to achieve insights into their own actions as well as a better understanding of other people.
Psychology A-level introduces a range of research methods that allow for objective, carefully balanced investigations of the reasons underlying behaviour. It removes many of the myths surrounding the subject and brings scientific rigour to the now complex understandings of human behaviour and emotion.
It enables students to study something new and exciting that is relevant and highly applicable to an understanding of the world we live in. It is both an applied and academic field that benefits both individuals and society as a whole. A large part of Psychology in the real world is devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the impact of Psychology. It’s a subject that suits any student who is determined to understand what motivates them and others, and to learn why it is that people think and act in a particular way.
The A-level course is divided into three components:
1. Introductory topics in Psychology including Psychopathology, Social Influence, Memory and Attachment.
2. Psychology in context including Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology and Research Methods.
3. Issues and options in Psychology including Issues and debates, Relationships, Forensic Psychology and Schizophrenia.

The language of Goethe, Beethoven, Marx and Nietzsche, German remains a language for the cultured, philosophers, lawyers, historians, the businessminded, politicians, scientists, designers and engineers. Germany has long been considered to be the powerhouse of business and industry in Europe, and continues to play a dominant role in the European Union. A major world financial centre, Germany is home to many global manufacturing, technology, scientific and logistics companies. A sound knowledge of German can be a tremendous asset to those working in high-level business and finance in Europe.
All modern languages can be studied alongside many other A-level subjects - German students often combine the subject with History, Music or Economics, but the focus on communication, analytical reading of texts and understanding of complex grammatical structures means that German benefits a range of subjects across the spectrum.
You will take part in a visit to Berlin, and may choose to organise a work experience placement in Germany. The German-speaking language assistant will support your conversational skills in small-group sessions, while multi-media access to online resources will develop your hands-on learning. Latin is often regarded as ‘dead’ simply because it is no longer used as an everyday spoken tongue. But its influence on English, French, Spanish and Italian cannot be underestimated. Latin and Greek- derived words form as much as 70% of the English language in use today and a much higher percentage of the technical vocabulary of Medicine and the sciences.
Those who have taken Latin GCSE and coped well with its rigours are in a position to take A-level. It is highly suitable for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the power of both language and literature. Latin combines very well indeed with English, Modern Languages and History, but would also complement Maths and Sciences. It also provides a very useful backdrop for those interested in careers in Medicine, Law or Journalism.
Language work at A-level builds upon the foundations laid at GCSE. Comprehension and translation skills are developed and knowledge of word endings is consolidated. Literature at A-level explores Latin prose and verse and enables students to engage directly with the wit and flair of some of the greatest minds of antiquity. Cicero will dazzle with his mind-bending sentence structure and the poet Ovid will amuse and charm with his wordplay.

We firmly believe that the busy and varied lives that our Sixth Form students lead help them to achieve outstanding academic success, and that is certainly borne out by our results year on year. In 2023 our results were some of our best ever, all the more remarkable considering the challenge and disruption of the previous few years. Overall, 19% of all grades awarded were A*, 45% of results secured were A*- A and 77% were graded A*- B.
These exceptional results, with the A* to C percentage being amongst the best in the School’s history, were a clear demonstration of the hard work and unwavering commitment of this year group.
We were also recognised, again, in The Sunday Times Parent Power 2023 Schools Guide as one of the Top 10 independent secondary schools in the West Midlands, the only Worcester school to be included in the Top 10 for three consecutive years.
Your next academic institution and your employer will judge you by your academic results, the strength of your personality and the breadth of your experience. King’s Sixth Form will help you make the very best of all three.

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a qualification open to students in England and Wales and is equivalent to half an A-level (28 UCAS points).
The EPQ qualification takes dedication and commitment and requires students to produce either a dissertation (5,000 words), music or drama composition or report/artefact (supported by full paperwork).
The EPQ is greatly valued by universities because it supports the development of independent research skills that are needed at the next level of education.
An increasing number of universities make lower grade offers to those who have achieved a strong result in an EPQ. Students are able to research any topic which is of interest to them and this leads to a rich variety of outcomes. Some of our students’ previous EPQ project topics include:
• Through which scheme can solar energy best supplement the generation of electricity in the UK?
• To what extent can cleft palate be prevented?
• Are the moral messages portrayed in the Classic Disney Princess films more important than the gender stereotypes?
• Is the legacy of the British Empire mainly positive or negative?
