The Dan model, answers to a specific contemporary need: to carry a knife, suitable for everyday life, not considered offensive. To this can be easily opened with one hand, but comes out without a locking system. Designed by Tommaso Rumici, it is our first sports folder equipped with mechanical Action Stopper®, now thoroughly tested after many years after its debut. The system is similar to that used on Britola and Regional series: opposing the right resistance to be safe in generic uses, such as multi-purpose Swiss, but definitely unsuitable for violent uses. The name is followed by a number that identifies the blade shape and hides the acronym “Daily Assorted Needs” that suggests the great versatility of this small folder.

The new models Fox Sputnik have been designed with the Russian market in mind, but actually they very interesting also for enthusiasts of other countries. Gritty and with a tactical look, once in hand, they feel very comfortable and make you want to use them. The supplied sheath egregiously completes the package
1- The Sputnik 13 is the longer of the series, and it fits the role of fighter-utility for military purposes properly. It may be too long for outdoor
hough the name carried refers t o t h e f i r s t a r t i f i c i a l s at e l l i t e that orbits Earth, the Sputnik by Fox was not designed fro the space. In Russian, the word “Sputnik” means “fellow traveler”, and that's exactly the intent of these blades - created through the collaboration of a Russian wholesaler Memotek - whether they are at the side of a military person or an hiker. A comfortable handle The Sputnik series is immediately recognizable by its black Tpr handle, with an unseen design which clearly differs from the previous molded handles by Fox. It's hidden tang, secured by a pin that is quite difficult to take apart unless you carry the right keys - and by a screwed-in back pommel. Why such a double securing? To offer a convenient replacement of the glass-crusher, which is supplied in two version with different weight (8 and 30 grams) together with a dedicated key. We got quite curious about the big difference in weight and color and we decided to put a magnet n e a r b o t h e l e m e n t s . T h e re s u l t w a s that the pointy one is made of steel tempered 420 - whereas the other is in aluminum: a very sensible solution that adds weight only when robustness is in order. Between the two, only the steel one holds a lanyard hole. To describe the shape of this new handle we just need one adjective: comfortable. Though it characterized by a very lively aspect due to the various grooves, it clearly shows that a lot of reasoning to reach the perfect grip is behind the design. To enhance the grip there is also a nice coarse superficial coating.

The series Th e s e r i e s o f f e r s f ive m o d e l s , a l l ver y intertwined among themselves, cl e a r ly d e r iv i n g f r o m t h e s a m e original design that has been d e cl i n e d t o r e s p o n d t o d i f f e r e n t needs. 10, 11 and 13 models are mainly distinguishable for the length of the blade, respectively of twelve, fourteen and fifteen centimeters.
The Sputnik 5 is long as the 11, but it spor ts on the spine a hollow ser rated area and a shar p hook at the beginning of the cutting edge. Finally, the Sputnik 7 is oriented to scuba uses, and hosts a shackle key in the second half of the blade, where the bevel decreases in height to make more robust the area that sports the indent.
3- A comparison of the blades of the two knives presented in this article. Even if the difference amounts to just 1.5 cm, in hand it feels like it’s much more Small modifications deriving from the serrated area aside, on the 5 we can clearly notice how the original design is similar

2- The Sputnik 5 is more compact compared to the 13, thus more appropriate for the outdoor when also matched with an hatchet. The length is the same of the 11 model, but it also sports on the spine a hollow serrated area which confers a more aggressive trait and may turn useful in bushcrafting
We cannot skip talking about the guards as we talked about the handle. They are asymmetrical and located in the area between the handle and the blade. The upper one is knurled to suppor t the thumb and for ward inclined hosting a groove that we believe it acts as a wire bender; the other is plain and slightly backward bent, to avoid the forwarding
of the index, and it holds a hole that can be useful to create a D-guard with some paracord. Both guards are rounded and less thicker in respect to the blade, which unfor tunately make them less comfortable. In truth, this is no aesthetic trick, instead its a needed trait to abide the Russian legislations in these matters.

It also carr y a spine serration and a s h a r p h o o k , bu t t h i s t i m e i s o n the the spine, near the tip. The Sputnik 5 is recognizable by its small sharp hook just before the cutting edge
q u i t e a l o t , bu t t h e a re s m a l l a n d take little space. To r ep r e s e n t t h e s e r i e s , we h ave chosen the Sputnik 13, the longest, and instead of the 11 we have privileged the 5, ver y compact and versatile and with a spine serration. We ' ve ex cl u d e d t h e 7 , t h at t e n d s to be more specialized and the 10, which differs from those presented for a shor ter blade.
Sputnik 13 The biggest of the family has a drop point and it's the only one with the so-called "fuller". The function of such machining, aside improving the aesthetic, u n l o a d s a n d s t re n g h t e n s t h e a re a with no beveling, increasing the overall surface. The theories on the fuller that describe it as a mean to let the blood flow or alternatively let the air flow in to cause an embolism are quite fantastic. The bevels are at one-third of the overall height and toward the tip. Where the machining ends, they meet other flats with different inclination, making the blade captivating, leaving unaltered its quality. Notwithstanding the length of the bl a d e, t h e p re s e n c e o f t h e b a ck g l a s s - c r u s h e r, s h i f t s t o t h e b a c k t h e b a r y c e n t e r, i n c r e a s i n g t h e maneuverability, and reducing the inertia that some outdoor tasks ask for. There is also the possibility of c h a n g i n g t h e g l a s s - c r u s h e r, t h u s changing the balance: more control is offered by the heaviest of the two, more strength in the cutting blows with the lighter one. Obviously the difference is not ex t re m e, bu t wh e n i n h a n d i t c a n be clearly felt.We are confident in stating that the fighter-utility model is the perfect choice for unifor med personnel who is usually attached to the offensive use of the knife, even if for the majority of the time it'll be used as a tool.

interesting in scuba environments, but this model won't see such use, as there is already in the family a blade designed for that. Even the shar p hook at the beginning of the cutting edge shows its usefulness to cut nets and lanyards just by hooking and pulling them. For all of the above motivations, among all the models, we would choose the Sputnik 5 for
an outdoor use, maybe matching it to a bigger tool for heavier tasks. A modular sheath It's difficult to wish for a more complete and modular sheath when we look at the one that is supplied with the Sputnik series. The main case is rigid, a strong molded Frn, and is equipped with two different retention systems. The fir st is made of two elastic laminates that centrally retain
7-The sheath is very complete: a series of straps are secured around a FRN casing, allowing almost any kind on carry. In the packaging you will also find thigh straps with gray rubber wires to make them more stable

6- The Sputnik 13 is the only one of the series that sports the so-called "fuller" on the blade. Aside the aesthetic enhancement, the function of this detail is to unload the blade and making it more rigid
Sputnik 5 Th e S p u t n i k 5 h a s a bl a d e s i m i l a r to the one of its bigger brother, just slightly shor ter, but the difference between the two is important when put it into use. The serration might also be

the blade. The second one consists of the two rims at the opening that with their thickness interact with the two oval areas on the hand. Aside being perforated to quickly discharge water, the bottom can be easily removed to clean it under a faucet. The polymer area can be used as standalone, by secur ing it via its numerous holes and loops. Usually, it's enveloped by a 1000 denier Nylon harness, that allows a belt-carr y, a coupling with MO.L.L.E. systems or a carry at the thigh using the equipped straps. The latter are made of synthetic material with rubber wires so they can keep firmly the position you've chosen. î ľ

TWO STEELS INSTEAD OF ONE After the success of the Skar and of the Ti-Rock, Collini Cutlery in Busto Arsizio (Varese) has recently unveiled a new collaboration with Extrema Ratio. The material chosen for the blade is a two-steels sandwich: the inner layer is in CoS at 61,5 Hrc, whereas the two lateral plates are in 420J2 at 56 Hrc. The CoS has 1.1% of carbon and 16% of chromium, which ensure great cutting capabilities and oxidation-resistance. Designed by knifemaker Mike Wallace, the Colossus represents a nice exception, with a very wide and clearly rounded blade sporting high and flat bevels, a neat trick to increase the length of the usable cutting edge without exceeding on the length of the blade. Cold Steel used the Cts Xhp from the American Carpenter: an alloy with so much carbon that makes it though and sharp up to 64 Hrc, as well as so much chromium to avoid

The structure is very rigid even if there are no metallic liners. To make unique the handle is the 3D machining, which consists in many oval or circular millings of different depth and size which create a rather unique patter n of color s. The extreme robustness we introduced at the beginning is guaranteed by the Tr i-Ad lock by Andrew Demko, the evolution of another locking system previously created by John PerMar. Similar to the back lock, it differs mainly by the added stop pin, which avoids the blade to get directly into contact with the lever, thus redistributing the stress load. Another characteristic of this mechanism is the protrusion of the lever that deeply sinks into its seat, where the area is enough to compensate the
