1- The Fortis is the latest folder created from the collaboration between Viper and the Danish Jesper Voxnaes. Clearly showing common traits with Odino and Kyomi, it's thinner and easier to carry everyday

he new collaboration between Viper and Vox is called For tis, and in our opinion, it's the best among the folder s created by t h i s c o l l ab o rat i o n . We a re n o t saying that Odino and Kyomi are a ny l e s s i n t e re s t i n g , bu t t h e y a re clearly heftier compared to this last creation that offer s a exceptional compromise between dimensions (when open) and ease of carry. The architecture belongs to a frame-lock, with the right-half of the handle in titanium, and a steel insert screwedon at the extremity of the spring. The machining is clearly present as it reduces the exertion needed to move the spring, but it's hidden inside, so not to affect the cleanness of the scale. As per usual, the manufacturer proposes different var iations, but finding the way among the choices is quite easy.
2- Even if the blade can be opened via the classic hole, we w i l l p ro b a b l y e n d up using the flipper: thanks to the ballbearings and the proper hindrances of the appendix, it works flawlessly
The left scale can be in titanium, carbon fiber or black, green or orange G10. The blades are stone-washed or with a satin f i n i s h , o n ly ava i l abl e wh e n t h e handle is in titanium or carbon. The two halves of the handle are s ep a r at e d b y a a n o d i z e d s p a c e r, par tially protr uding and with a rounded outline, secured with three couples of Torx, that leave enough space to avoid dir t to settle. Aside offering a support for the thumb in an up-side-down position, the three m i l l i n g s h o s t s a l s o a 5 m m h o l e. Notwithstanding the flatness of the handle, the Fortis boasts strong ergonomics that allow various p o s i t i o n s , a s we ' d ex p e c t f ro m a jack-of-all-trades. The only constraint is given by the lower quillon, that clearly defines the limit where the index will be allowed to reach. The 4

And it is exactly when you carry the Fortis that you can fully appreciate t h i s n e w c r e a t i o n b y Vi p e r. T h e contained maximum thickness, the regular shape and the absence of gripping textures, make the For tis pleasant to carr y around even for l o n g p e r i o d s a s we l l a s d e l i c at e with the pockets of your trouser s. In an ideal world, the Fortis would be the perfect EDC, perfectly dimensioned to car r y out almost everything required by a fixed blade. In reality, at least here in Italy, its almost 9 cm long blade may be a tiny bigger to maintain a low profile: a ve r y go o d r e a s o n t o l e ave t h e urban areas more often. 3
3- Even on the Fortis the producer has used the Böhler M390, that thanks to the high bevels, it can best express its extraordinary cutting capacities. As per usual, the extremity of the spring ends with a steel screwed-on insert
remaining fingers are free to position themselves as needed: the thumb, in particular, can forward or backward as it likes, as it will always find an ideal suppor t to exer t strength and have full control. To open the blade, you can choose to use the oval-shaped hole or the f l i p p e r. M o s t l i ke l y, w e w i l l e n d u p u s i n g t h e l at t e r, a s i t s ro t at i o n on the ball.bearings and the p e r fe c t d i m e n s i o n s m a ke s t h e appendix perfectly functional. Once opened, we have at our disposal a mostly-straight cutting edge, with a
substantial thickness but with high b eve l s , t h at e n h a n c e t h e c u t t i n g c ap ab i l i t i e s o f t h e B ö h l e r M 3 9 0 Microclean. The profile is exquisitely simple and embellished by a rounded spine and a tight swedge, which disguises the generous width. The titanium clip, that cannot be repositioned, machined from a block and anodized as the spacer, is quite elastic. In respect to the common ones, created through bending, this cl i p c o nve y s a s t ro n g e r s e n s e o f quality and does not mismatch the Fortis.

4- Aside being very flat, the handle of the For tis has a likable and lively pattern, that makes it nice to look at and comfortable to be used. As this is a Fr a m e - l o c k , t h e right half is a stonewashed titanium . The clip, machined from a block of titanium, is a small piece of jeweler y that goes nicely with the rest of the folder. It is anodized with the same of the back spacer, that hosts a lanyard hole 5

he Bravo series by Bark River is already a large family, that you need to know the exact model t o u n d e r s t a n d o f wh i ch k n i fe we are talking about. in fact the family ranges between a compact jack-ofall-trades to a humongous chopper. Our knife is a 12 cm Bravo Squad Leader with a wide blade that winks to the military as well as hunters and outdoor s enthusiasts. What makes the difference, while trying to place it in a more or less tactical arena, i s t h e m at e r i a l s we ' l l ch o o s e fo r the scales. As usual for Bark River, we w i l l n o t l i s t a l l t h e ava i l abl e alternatives, since there are almost 40! We suggest you visit their official website that you'll find at the end of the article, you'll just need to select the preferred material and a picture will pop up with such handle. Our model is in antique ivory micarta, a p r a c t i c a l m at e r i a l t h at i s ve r y little sensitive to the environment and at the same time unusual and elegant. It's a full tang, with the scales permanently secured by two metallic pins and a small tube. The whole thing has a likable ergonomic feel, with a nice bulge that fills the palm and two creases toward the bottom that highlight the extremities. The hand can squeeze with power, without feeling edges or protr usions. The assembly is i m p e c c abl e, s o mu ch s o t h at i t ' s i m p o s s i bl e t o fe e l t h e t ra n s i t i o n between scales and tang, even the pins are sightly encased in the micarta. In a scale of one to ten, this handle deserves a nice nine, it does not reach the excellency only for its
extreme smooth finishing - surely very nice at the sight and touch, but way too slippy. At the end of the handle, just like on the Bravo-1, we find a piece of exposed tang where there is a ovalshaped hole. This can be used in place of the small tube should we wish to put a flat and wide fastener. Bark River declares that the blade, a clip point, is derived from a great classic of the American cutlery: the U.S.M.C. Mk-II. As a matter of fact, for those who had experience with the latter, probably may have noticed that the long blade, which is perfect f o r t h o u g h t a s k s , i s ex a g g e r at e d for trekking situations and a little clumsy for precision tasks. The maneuverability of the Squad L e a d e r s t a n d s o u t a s we l l a s i t s robustness, thanks to its generous thickness, the convex bevels and the choice of steel. The manufacturer decided to use the A2 steel, an alloy that doesn't excel for its oxidation resistance but shines in its mechanical characteristics, as this is a tool designed for an intensive use. Don't get scared, it means we will have to take care in cleaning it, but with little worries as the simple friction when it is used will make the blade shine, and when we decide to put it back at rest, we will always have to oil it. As per usual, the Escabana company used a simple white cardboard box for the packaging that a l s o i n cl u d e s a n a t u r a l - t a n n i n g scented leather sheath, that recalls t h e m i l i t a r y s h e at h p r e v i o u s t h e introduction of those in Kydex and synthetic materials. 7
