THE KING OF Lionsteel ATLANTA Kur by Lionsteel is the last newborn of the Italian company, but it's already renown thanks to the Overall Knife of the Year prize with which it was awarded at the Blade Show 2016. Is it worth the prize? Let's have a look text and pictures by Tommaso Rumici

offers three variations of its Kur. Certainly, the most famous is the one with a stone-washed blade and the aluminum handle coated with the special Metamorphosis, which is black when it's cold and camo once heated by the heat of the hand (23°). Alternatively, the stone-washed blade can be matched to black, orange or green G10 scales. Should you prefer a black stone-washed finishing, then the handle will come in black or brown. Why did we choose one of the laminated fiber-glass versions instead of the one awarded with the best industrial knife at the Blade Show? The reason does not lay on the unnoticeable difference in weight - around fifteen grams - but for the fact that there is a clip, which in the Metamorphosis is replaced by a leather sheath. The dimensions of the Kur, designed by Michele “molletta” Pensato, are truly perfect. It's big enough to be a jack-of-all-trade, but also compact enough so we don't feel the need to look for a fixed blade. The only reason you will not want to carry it in your pocket, thus preferring something smaller to carry in urban environments, it's 1.The Kur design recalls not a practical one, but a legal one. what already seen on The mechanical frame is the well-known liner lock, the T.R.E. and, thanks with the added flipper that speeds up the opening. to its clean and simple Thanks to the use of ball bear ings, the rotation is blade, ends up being a flawless, even at the presence of a solid retention streamlined and thin when the blade is closed, which makes its daily use knife notwithstanding practical and safe. i t s r o b u s t n e s s . T h e The blade has a simple and versatile design, between handle falls into the a drop point and a spear point. The aesthetic is clean, h a n d ve r y n a t u r a l ly, thanks to the bevels that reach the spine, the lack i t ' s c o m f o r t a b l e i n of opening holes or pins, and with clear writings in a prolonged use and small fonts. All of this allows the blade to maintain a most of all, safe streamlined and thin look, while remaining wide and thick. Just like on many recent models, Lionsteel has used the Sleipner steel with an hardness between 60 to 61 HRC, leaving us with no doubts on the cutting capabilities. The machining on the scales recalls the T.R.E. handle, for the inclinations of the surfaces and the slight indents, that make them more gripping. At a first glance, this liner lock appears lacking metallic liners, but it's just an impression. As a matter of fact they are there. They are hosted with precision inside the two halves of the handle and protruding at the bottom for the right amount of space to allow the pressure on the spring to release the lock, and, on the upper area, where the G10 panels let them slightly protrude with a knurling, right where the stop pin is present. The Kur it's not part of the monolithic series: to separate the scales there is 3

2. The Kur appears to lack in liners, but this is not the c a s e a s t h ey a re h o s t e d inside the G10 scales. The only areas where they protrude are on the spine of the handle - with a knurled trait - and the area where you'll need to put pressure on to release the mechanic 3
3. When closed, the only protrusion is represented by the bottom quillon, that by protruding from the scales, acts as a flipper. Consequently, the Kur is always comfortable to carry in the pocket, even for long periods

4. As suggested by the laser-etching on the pivot, the blade rotates on ball bearings, that assure a consistent and precise operation, and will never m a ke u s l o n g f o r o t h e r alternative ways of opening 5. The reason why decided not to review the Metamorphosis finishing, which was awarded with the Overll Knife of the Year prize in the last edition of the Blade Show, is the lack of a clip. All the other variations carry one which i s ro b u s t , p r a c t i c a l a n d reversible

To disassemble the folder, you'll need just one key. The newbor n from Lionsteel is comfortable and stable. It fills the hand properly, there are no annoying edges and the bottom quillon avoids any slip towards the blade, even in though situations. As already mentioned at the beginning, there is a robust and perfect clip, secured to the spacer, and can be repositioned on the opposite side by disassembling handle. Look andthe click on On the small trait of spacer that protrudes at the end INTERNATIONAL of the handle, thereREVIEW is a hole, smaller than the usual but big enough KNIVES to hold a paracord.

TWO IT'S BETTER THAN ONE
1.The Bark River Trakker Companion is a compact and very maneuverable knife, that allows different types of grip. As there is no guard, it's not suitable to novices, but it is excellent in expert hands

o t e ve r yo n e t h at wo r k s in contact with nature uses the same tools. And this is for objective reasons: not ever yone has to perform the same tasks, and different environments require different tools. And there are subjective reasons that depend on how tasks are perfor med. So, we will have those that car r y an hatchet and a small fixed blade, those that car r y a single knife
ready to do ever ything, those that will carr y two knives with different dimensions, and so on. And this is the real core of the matter: always with common sense in mind, there is no single valid solution, but many, and each one with its pros and cons. The Bark River Trakker Companion has not been designed as a jack-ofall-trade, but as an ideal companion of the imposing Trakker proposed by the American company, inspired 6

The handle of our model, supplied by Maxblade (www.maxblade.it), is in green micarta, though it tends to be more brown. As usual, Bark River offer s so many alter natives, that, instead of listing them here, we invite you to look for them on their official website. Aside the material of choice, the str ucture is one of a full tang, with the thickness of tang consistent in all its length. The handle is assembled with two
pins and a small tube, that cannot be removed and perfectly leveled to the surface of the scale, it's almost i m p o s s i bl e t o fe e l t h e m w i t h t h e hand. The blade is somewhat simple, but original. It's a drop point with a quite high tip and a pot-bellied cutting edge, suitable to cut meat while not giving up the use of the tip. The steel is Aisi A2, tempered to 58-60 Hrc and with a satin finishing, and the bevels
4. The leather sheath has the classic belt fastener, as well as two smaller fasteners, designed for a horizontal carry at the belt. The leather is of high quality, the white stitches make a likable contrast 4

3.The leather sheath envelops the knife almost completely, and keeps it in position impeccably, thanks to the hidden magnet in the leather. To make the extraction easier, it'll be useful to secure a lanyard in the hole on the back
by the famous Tracker by David R. Beck for Tom Brown. Therefore, it's a specialized knife, that will have to take care of lighter and precise tasks, like during hunting, cutting the meat while leaving heavier tasks to the bigger one. The handle recalls the one found on the big brother, with two single indents and a wider one, that allow the front or back movement of the grip to reach the perfect position for
each cut. This Bark River shines for maneuverability even if, as like with the other knives lacking in quillons, is ready to be tamed only by expert hands. For those at their first step in this area, mistakes will be paid with lots of pain. The balance, as you'd ex p e c t o n a f i xe d bl a d e t h at h a s to be pr imar ily precise, is shifted b a ck wa rd , w i t h t h e b a r y c e n t e r falling exactly where you find the central groove of the handle. 7

The Trakker Companion hasn't been designed to be a jack-of-all-trade, but as an ideal complement of the imposing Trakker, always of the American company, that you can see here in a picture taken from their website. The assortment includes fixed and folders, very different in shapes and dimensions, and cover almost every need, from the ever y day carr y to hunting, reaching even the tactical area. Up until little ago, the Ruger brand was known only to those in the firearm arena. large tanto‑profile blade, with midheight and very concave bevels that e n h a n c e t h e c u t t i n g c ap ab i l i t i e s wh i l e l e av i n g t h e a r e a w i t h f u l l thickness a structural function. The cutting edge is in 8Cr13MoV which is widely used in the Far East - which is reaching a fame of earnest worker. The cutting edge can be flat or partially occupied by a aggressive Veff ser ration, that stands out for i t s re d u c e d nu m b e r o f t e e t h t h at are inclined and with a generous amount of space among them. There are no choices for the finishing, just a black stone washed one, which on one side, hides the signs of wear, and on the other highlights the changes i n t h e s h ap e t h u s e n h a n c i n g t h e a e s t h e t i c s . To o p e n t h e 2 - S t a g e there are no pins or indents, but a flipper that r ises from the handle and as the knife is open, it becomes a reassur ing quillon. The rotation of the blade, which runs on Teflon washers, it's not comparable to the high-end folders equipped with ballbearings, but once you get confident with the system, you'll see it works p r o p e r l y a n d c o n s i s t e n t l y, e v e n without the help of the wr ist. The stop pin is present but not visible, as it runs in the internal indent of the blade. The handle has quite a simple outline and a little belly. The left side is black anodized aluminum, embellished by three parallel millings. The other scale, with black stone washed finishing, is in steel - a mandator y choice since the frame lock spring ought to derive from it while keeping costs under control 10

Go-N-Heavy The Go-N-Heavy, designed by Bill Har sey, takes us to a market share scarcely populated, the one of gigantic folders. At least this is applicable to the model of this article, as there is also a "compact" edition that still, when open, is 199 millimeters long. This time, we have a very sharp drop point blade, always in 8Cr13MoV with 58-59 Hrc,
made even more streamlined by a p a r t i a l swe d g e t h at re c a l l s o t h e r productions of the designer. Aside the fact that it is aggressive, it also conveys the idea of being ready to perform any task we have in mind. The bevels, this time, are smooth, to maintain the robustness and the finishing of course are stone washed. As it is the case of the 2-Stage, and of many other Crkt products, both the

To separate the two halves, there is a aluminum s p a c e r t h at e n d s i n a t r i a n g u l a r holed protrusion that can be used as a crusher. designed by Carter can be used by left handed as well, as it's possible to easily close it with both hands. Remarkably, the clip can be repositioned in four different areas: tip-up, tip-down, right or left. Moreover, this clip is perfect both in design and materials. Once secured, it grants the retention of the folder, and, at the same time, it feels elastic and flexible, easy to position in the pocket after each use. 11

5. In this photo, when the 2-Stage is disassembled you can notice the peg that avoids the lockspring to wear out and the stop-pin, that runs in the indent inside the blade. We would have liked to show you also the disassembled Go-N-Heavy, but the pivot didn't want to collaborate
aluminum, full of holes and with a p at t e r n o f m i l l i n g s o f d i f fe re n t depths. When we first saw this model at t h e I wa , t h e m a ch i n i n g o n t h e handle made us rise quite some doubts on the comfort. Fortunately, we had to change idea as the edges created by the encountering indents are smooth as well as the edges of the scales. The result is an unexpectedly comfortable handle, ready to offer a
perfect grip even when moist, ideal when used with gloves especially in rigid climates. G iv e n t h e d i m e n s i o n s , a n d t h e complexity of the machining on the scales, which would have destroyed any pocket, Crkt preferred to avoid u s i n g a cl i p o n t h e G o - N - H e av y, not even in its smaller ver sion, where the lack of it will be more noticeable. In its place, you'll be 12

6. The Go-N-Heavy is a folder of gigantic dimensions. At first sight, the machining of the aluminum handle which is a grid of millings, seemed uncomfortable, but as we tested it, we had to change our minds. there are no live edges
The answer, as often happens, is "it depends". If you are looking for a long blade for cutting tasks, but it has to take little room when not needed, then the answer is "absolutely, yes". If, instead, you will constantly use the knife on all those activities with continuous blows, like chopping or batoning, a folder will be always in disadvantage in respect to a fixed blade of same dimensions. î ľ
8
8. The 2-Stage can be carried via clip to the pocket of your trousers. With the Go-N-Heavy, this is not possible, both for the hindrances and the finishing of the handle, as it would destroy the fabric. For this reason, in packaging, you'll find a strong black synthetic sheath
LM
equipped with a Nylon belt sheath, with a Velcro closing system. It's not par ticularly original in its design, but it's quite robust and, thanks to the three back fastener s, it allows both a vertical and horizontal carry. At this point, having cleared ever y possible doubt regarding the quality of the Ruger by Crkt, we are left with only one question: is a folder big like the Go-N-Heavy useful, or is it better to carry a fixed knife?
7. Crkt produces these knives in China, as clearly stated on the packaging, but the design is by one of the worldwide greatest names of cutlery. The result is products with great price/ quality ratio, perfect to be truly used and worn out
