The Power of Youth at KAC At KAC we embrace the power of art to inspire new ideas, offer new hope, and spark new friendships. That’s why we believe art education is essential for the development of the whole child. In 2018, we are embarking on a new, low-cost, after-school program: Make Your Mark (for grades 3-5). This arts-based curriculum aims to develop social and emotional (SEL) skills like collaboration, communication, empathy, and growth mindset. In March, four schools will pilot Make Your Mark created by KAC teaching artists and community leaders. Over 200 hours of instruction will be offered to support students’ artistic and social emotional development, which is proven to be essential for youth’s success professionally and in life. Make Your Mark will fully launch in Fall 2018. If you are looking to bring more creativity to your own children’s lives, multiple opportunities are available right here at KAC! Registration for Summer Camps begins February 3rd. Kids will make art and new friends in a supportive, safe environment. On Mother’s Day, come to KAC to kick off your Kirkland Arts Studio Tour experience! We will have kids activities, music, and food trucks. Stop by and pick up a Studio Tour program and ask about how to maximize your experience. I look forward to seeing you there! Best Regards,
KELLY DYLLA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? I really look forward to teaching my classes each day and I enjoy seeing the new ideas that everyone comes up with. What gets me into my own studio is the idea of a stack of pristine paper just waiting to be printed or painted on.

KAREN KLEE-ATLIN INTERVIEW
Karen is an active studio artist, working primarily as a painter and printmaker, and holds an MFA from the University of Calgary. She has helped students across a wide range of ability and interest levels creatively explore new ideas and processes, improve their skills, and engage with art in a way that can be a lifelong source of growth and enjoyment. In addition to teaching at KAC, Karen has her own workspace, Blue House & Yellow Dog Studio, in Ballard and is a member of Shift Gallery and Seattle Print Arts.
Learn more about Karen and see all of her work by following www.kaestudio.net

I would love to print enormous banners of trees to create a forest for viewers to walk through.
WHERE CAN WE SEE YOUR WORK? I am a member of Shift Gallery in Pioneer Square and will have a solo show there in September. My studio in Fremont is open every Fremont First Friday Artwalk from 5-9 pm. Drop in and say “Hi!”
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS OF ANY AGE AND WITH ANY LEVEL OF EXPERTISE? I like to stretch myself in terms of my subject matter, what media I use, etc., to keep my work fresh. Whenever I start on a project that challenges what I know or the skills that I have, I break the work down into small, manageable bits to keep from being overwhelmed or giving up. I find that relying on this process is very helpful in keeping my focus on the work and growing as an artist.
KIRKLAND ARTS CENTER GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
TOPOPHILIA KAC GALLERY
GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Friday 11 AM – 6 PM Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM Closed Sundays and Mondays
MARCH 6 – APRIL 28 OPENING RECEPTION 6PM ON MARCH 9
We all have places that hold a certain amount of significance for us, that exist in the real world, but also exist in our imaginations, our stories, our memories, in altered forms that are specific only to us and our lived experiences. Topophilia: A Sense of Place, A Sense of Feeling explores the significance of place, and is based on the central concept that an individual’s personal perspective of a place shapes their artistic interpretation and expression. The 16 artists in this exhibition use their experiences, memories, and imaginations to create places both real and surreal, familiar and fantastic, and to express their feelings about the world around them. Curated by Emily Bowden through the Emerging Curator Initiative program at the University of Washington.
The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery supports local artists and curators by providing a space for engaging exhibitions. These shows inspire art appreciation and creativity in the Kirkland arts community. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public, including our opening receptions.
