SHAPING THE FUTURE. Dear KAC Community,

PRESENTS

Kirkland Arts Center is shaping the future. More than ever, daily access to the arts is essential for our schools, hospitals and hospices, and communities. The arts develop empathy, compassion, selfawareness, and self-regulation.

ARTBEAT

Every one of us needs some kind of art in our lives - it is what gives our life meaning and hope. Together, when we share our artwork, when we encourage others to draw, paint, sing, or dance, when we look at other's art, we are not only growing individually, we are growing collectively. We need more empathy, compassion and connection in our lives. What is art if it is not compassionate, empathetic, and connected? You can help bring more arts education to your schools and community by supporting the Kirkland Arts Center:

On October 26, KAC will ask our community: give to our future, give to help us build more space for arts programming. We need everyone to speak up for more arts access and opportunities in our community! Thank you for believing in the power of art,

Learn more about Miha on our website's Instructors page. WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? WHAT EXCITES OR INSPIRES YOU?

MIHA SARANI INTERVIEW Miha Sarani is a visual artist, an art historian, and an art educator. He was born and raised in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and permanently moved to United States in 2007, after spending almost a decade living in Italy. He earned a BFA (painting + drawing, 2015) and an MA (art history, 2019) from the University of Washington. Also passionate about music, Miha released his first music album Emona Au Revoir in 2016. It was included in Seattle Public Library's PlayBack program the following year. He lives and works in Seattle with his wife Tomitha, and their dog Blue. WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YOUR FAMILY LIKE? HOW DID THEY FEEL ABOUT YOU PURSUING ART? I was born and raised in Ljubljana, which is the capital of Slovenia. I lived there until ’98, when I moved to Naples, Italy. The entire family spent most of our free time together - including my grandparents. Weekends, special events, holidays, vacations. That all changed once I moved. My parents were quite encouraging of my art making, but never expected it would lead to an employment opportunity. They were supportive to a point, as long as I was going to learn a vocation. Growing up in Ljubljana, there were very few (and I’m being generous here) individuals who could support themselves, and their loved ones by making art. I honestly think, even today, my family still has a bit of a hard time understanding what I do - not to say they aren’t very happy for me.

For the last couple of years, what gets me up is our dog Blue. She has a keen sense for when it’s time to enter the studio. However, I do love new possibilities. And each new day is an opportunity to create, see, experience something new, something different from a previous day. This chance to do new, fresh, exciting things, particularly in artistic terms, is what excites and inspires me. I love to create - whether it’s drawing, painting, music, writing. I absolutely love the creative process, and I get charged while in the moment of creating. It’s exciting and exhilarating. One of my all-time favorite art idols, Marcel Duchamp explained it best: “Art is a habit forming drug.”

DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT— BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS. I keep a list of my top dream projects, things I still wish to tackle. There is the original artwork for the Criterion Collection, scoring a film, producing a graphic novel, exhibiting my work in Ljubljana, and the “large” work, which would be a painting seen from space.

WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS OF ANY AGE, AND WITH ANY LEVEL OF EXPERTISE?

Love what you do, and do what you love anyway you can. If you love making art, but can't afford to do it as a vocation, do it in your spare time. Bring a notebook and pencil with you to work, sketch on the break, or on the bus, or while you're watching TV. Wake up early and draw for a while before going to work. People tell you to shoot for the moon or the stars, but I shoot for the sun. Go for the truly impossible, not conveniently improbable. Shooting for the sun, I almost certainly won't make the distance but it will be a wild, and unforgettable trip getting there.

WHERE CAN WE SEE YOUR WORK?

Several of my larger works are on permanent display at the Mary Gates Hall, and another in the president’s office in the Gerberding Hall (both at the University of Washington). I also have two solo shows coming up next year - one at the Slovenian Embassy in Washington D.C. and the second at the UW Tower.

IN THE FLESH KAC GALLERY OCTOBER 1– NOVEMBER 16 OPENING RECEPTION: 6PM ON OCTOBER 4

In The Flesh is a group exhibition that takes a look across mediums and varying artistic practices to see how artists engage with the human body. As vessels for meaning or projections of emotional landscapes, In The Flesh examines how the perception of ourselves and others are embodied within the representation of the human form. This show is curated by KAC's own J. Gordon, Geneva Rose Baldauf and Amanda Reeves.
