POWER OF ART. Dear KAC Community, I hope you all have had a terrific start to 2019! With over 500 students and a 50-person waitlist, we are working harder than ever for students to feel welcome to come to KAC as you are and feel energized when you leave, with a new creation or personal connection. KAC’s renewed focus on community has helped us to make some shifts that will better serve our working artists and Eastside . After ten plus years of hosting the Kirkland Arts Studio Tour, Kirkland Arts Center has intensified the weekend to a 3-day celebration of art, music, and community: • Friday, May 10, stop by for the opening of our annual juried exhibition, Best of KAC, an exhibition featuring artists who have been part of the KAC Community within the past two years as teaching artists or students. Jurors for Best of KAC are gallery curator Jay Gordon, ceramic artist Sandra Farmer, and watercolorist Che Lopez, all KAC teaching artists. • Saturday, May 11, KAC will host an Open House and Ceramic Art Sale. Students, families, and the entire community are welcome to visit to see free ceramic and printmaking demonstrations, make art at DIY stations, meet teaching artists, and purchase work by ceramic artists. • Sunday, May 12, KAC has teamed up with 91.3 KBCS to host Music+Ideas@KAC featuring singer/songwriter Tekla Waterfield, in the wide-open realm of American Roots music, this Mother’s Day at 2PM in the intimate warm setting of the KAC gallery. KAC will find new opportunities to help bring artists’ work to market, including a special KAC Art Fair at Summerfest, a student sale, and the beloved Holiday Art Market in December. Thank you for supporting KAC as we embrace change to help better connect our regions’ talented artists with an ever-growing Eastside landscape.

and my mother and another parent were looking over the finished drawings my third grade class had done. They came to one that they thought was really great and turned it over to see who had made it. It was mine! The other parent was surprised that my mom hadn't realized it was mine and my mom explained that she hadn't realized how talented I was because she had never seen my work next to others.
WHAT EXCITES OR INSPIRES YOU?
SANDRA FARMER INTERVIEW Sandra M. Farmer graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 with a BFA in Crafts with a focus in Ceramics and a BIS in Pre-Art Therapy. She has been teaching art and ceramics for almost 20 years at various institutions including the Children's Museum of VA, the Seattle Art Museum, The Children's Museum in Seattle, Pottery Northwest, Redmond Clay Studio, Moshier Community Center, DigiPen, and North Seattle Community College. Her work focuses on figurative ceramics and mixed media. She has exhibited her work locally and nationally.
WHAT WAS YOUR CHILDHOOD LIKE?
I grew up in Northern Virginia, about 30 min outside of DC. I'm the oldest of three and my parents were very supportive of my interest in the arts. My father was an architect and a photographer in his youth. My mother was a kindergarten teacher. They took us in to DC regularly to museums and live shows. I was encouraged to follow my dreams of becoming an artist, although my mother really wanted me to become a teacher. I started school as an art education major and even though I changed majors I'm thankful for my year in the education program. My mother loves sharing the story of when she first realized that I could be an artist. We were on a school field trip to the Corcoran Gallery in DC
10
Right now my 16 month old gets me up way too early!! She is ready to go explore outside before 5am every morning! I'm inspired by nature, the beauty of bugs has always fascinated me. The human body and faces are amazing. I'm the weirdo on the bus staring at your interesting shaped ear or nose. I find hands extremely exciting and had a period where I was making plaster casts of friends and families hands...
DO YOUR KIDS LIKE ART?
Rowen is in her blue period, that is the only color she chooses to use at the moment. Riley is very interested in graffiti and street art. They both spend time in the studio with me. Rowen is still unsure about clay but Riley has his moments. Currently he is less interested in clay as a medium and prefers pencil, marker and spray paint.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT--BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS. Oh my... I have this vision to have a huge, outdoor, figure building class near a body of water....we create life size (or bigger!!) self portraits and then when finished wheel them in a procession to the water to be returned to the Earth....
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS?
Don't stop making art!! Make things again, again, and again. You learn and improve the more you do it. Find your medium...I find that when students tell me they aren't a 'good' artist they just haven't found the right medium for them. Art can be so therapeutic. Find what makes you feel good!
WHERE CAN WE SEE YOUR WORK?
Currently I have my jewelry at the Columbia City Gallery store and at Vain Downtown in Seattle. I also have sculpture and jewelry on display at my studio gallery, Salty Dog, in Ballard.
KIRKLAND ARTS CENTER GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
CAPABILITY KAC GALLERY
GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Friday 11 AM – 6 PM Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM Closed Sundays and Mondays
MARCH 19 – APRIL 27 OPENING RECEPTION 6PM ON MARCH 22
Capability is a meditation on gun culture and gun violence in the United States. Artists from the local and national community reflect on the multi-faceted ways in which guns have woven themselves into our cultural identity. Capability uses compassion and empathy to dissect the historical and contemporary contexts that address the questions: How did we get here? How do we move forward? This exhibit is in partnership with the UW Emerging Curator Initiative (ECI), where Museology students develop exhibit concepts, and one student, Maggie DeFranco is selected to curate a show at the Kirkland Arts Center.
The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery supports local artists and curators by providing a space for engaging exhibitions. These shows inspire art appreciation and creativity in the Kirkland arts community. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public, including our opening receptions.
