MAY 5TH – JUNE 13TH OPENING RECEPTION 6 PM ON MAY 8TH
This exhibition is curated by beloved KAC Teaching Artist and Ceramics Technician Pat Colyar. It showcases the strong legacy of the ceramics program at the Kirkland Arts Center. From the beginning of the organization in 1962, pottery and clay sculpture were major components of the classes and studio work. This exhibition showcases both old and new works from artists past and present. Early teachers such as Regnor Reinholdtsen influenced many, many artists, who have gone on to exhibit nationally and internationally, and to teach classes and workshops worldwide. The ceramics program at the Kirkland Arts Center is stronger than ever, with waiting lists for most classes. Please join us in celebrating these amazing artists and their works! The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery supports local artists and curators by providing a space for engaging exhibitions. These shows inspire art appreciation and creativity in the Kirkland arts community. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public, including our opening receptions. 425.822.7161 · www.kirklandartscenter.org

HOW DID THEY FEEL ABOUT YOU PURSUING ART?
They were supportive but never really understood why the need existed. There are a few funny stories that my mom shared with me that highlight my creative side at a young age. Ask me sometime and we can have a good laugh.
WHO SUPPORTED YOU IN BECOMING AN ARTIST?
ROBERT WETHERINGTON
You can see more of Robert's works at http://www.robertwetherington.com/
INTERVIEW Robert received his BFA in Ceramics and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2007 and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2009. Wetherington has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Korea. His work is included in numerous public and private collections. He has received several awards and is a Fulbright Scholar. He has taught at the Flint Institute of Arts, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and now teaches at Bellevue College, and Kirkland Arts Center. He lives and works in Redmond, WA where he has his studio.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
I grew up in several parts of Southern California until about the age of 14. My parents then decided to relocate to a rural town in central Kentucky.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAMILY LIKE?
My parents were hardworking but supportive in their own unique way. My siblings always kept me entertained. Criticism played an active part in our household. 425.822.7161 · www.kirklandartscenter.org
The GI Bill played a substantial part financially in supporting my art education, along with scholarships, grants, working several jobs, and student loans. I have been fortunate enough to have incredible mentors along the way who have always given sound advice and made amazing work. A few zany relatives I have always connected with also played an important part in that support system.
IS THERE A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST? At a very young age I thrived in the creative process. It has always fueled my imagination and interactions. I used to sit in libraries and look at art books and get lost in the complexity of it all.
WHAT EXCITES OR INSPIRES YOU?
Nature….in all its raw and unrelenting power to put us in our place. Innovations in technology are top shelf exciting.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT--BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS.
To create a large ceramic sculpture in zero gravity. Weightless clay sounds amazing doesn’t it? Has the international space station added on an art studio yet?
WHERE CAN WE SEE YOUR WORK?
My website mostly. I have an installation at the Oegosan Onngi in Ulson South Korea and a piece in the Slovak National Museum in Modra, Slovakia. Most of my work exists in private collections at this moment in time.
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS?
Follow your intuition and trust in your ability to connect with your audience and community. They are vital to your growth and well being.
