POWER OF ART. Dear KAC Community, Over the past few years, KAC has experienced healthy growth in classes and broader community engagement. It is an exciting time for KAC as we deepen our commitment to providing exceptional arts experiences in the Peter Kirk Building and on the Eastside. In order to meet the needs of students we’re re-inventing KAC’s membership program. KAC Membership Includes: • • • •
10% discount on all classes KAC Apron Free drink at all gallery-hosted events Pre-enrollment registration, regardless of current student status
Membership will be an annual fee of $100. Teaching artists with over 3 years of teaching at KAC will receive a free membership, as well as a free class once a year. At the same time, we are implementing a 10% increase for all classes, allowing KAC to offer our teaching artists higher wages. While we acknowledge this increase is significant and not without impact on our community, KAC remains very competitively priced and a clear value for students. As always we look forward to your feedback – please stop by the office anytime to share your ideas and feedback about how the Kirkland Arts Center can grow – for everyone who wants to be part of our community. To learn more about the membership, please visit the FAQ page on our website or send emails to membership@kirklandartscenter.org. With gratitude,
KELLY DYLLA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? WHAT EXCITES OR INSPIRES YOU? I love to dream big so there is always something on the horizon. I love creating, drawing, working towards my dreams and sharing my skills with others. Getting up in the morning and sitting in my studio to create is heaven for me. And what feeds into that are my adventures in the great outdoors as well as teaching. I’ve discovered a real passion for it, my students fuel me and inspire me all the time.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT— BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS.
MAJA SEREDA INTERVIEW Maja is an artist and an award-winning published children’s book illustrator based in Redmond, WA. She holds a BA in graphic design from University of Pretoria, South Africa. Her work has been featured in more than 20 books. Maja has worn many hats: besides having managed a freelance illustration career for more than a decade, she has worked as an art director for ad agencies in South Africa and Ireland, and worked as a colorist for an iconic South African comic. More recently, she has focused her work on drawing nature and teaching. In addition to teaching and art, Maja loves the outdoors and is an active hiker. She is passionate about animals, nature, conservation and photography.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT WAS YOUR FAMILY LIKE? HOW DID THEY FEEL ABOUT YOU PURSUING ART?
I was born in Poland and spent the first part of my childhood in Warsaw until my family moved to South Africa. My parents always encouraged me to create art by signing me up for different art classes and sending me to an art high school. My home always had art materials lying around. As far as I remember I was always drawing or making art with my hands.
My art is not a solo mission. I admire hard-working individuals who dedicate their lives to studying and protecting Mother Earth, and I want my art to help communicate their voice and aid their mission. My dream is to join forces and share my skills, time and vision with the individuals who have strong purpose and passion and who have hope for the future. My dream is to travel more, connect with more people, teach, share, build a community of artists and open up my own drawing school.
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS OF ANY AGE, AND WITH ANY LEVEL OF EXPERTISE?
Keep creating, learning and being curious. Amazing results arrive out of our dedication to our work and ourselves. Trust the process and ignore your inner critic. Tend to your own garden of creativity, your own way of working, drawing. Believe in our own abundance. It’s never to late or too early to start. Surround yourself by a community of people who will support you on your creative adventure.
WHERE CAN WE SEE YOUR WORK?
My illustration work has been featured in number of children’s books published in South Africa and France. I’m currently an Artist in Residence at Ben Franklin Elementary school and my work is being exhibited there. Also, I have an exhibition coming up at the end of this year.
