KAC 20/20 HERITAGE & HINDSIGHT As KAC enters a year of reflection, introspection, and forward vision, 20/20: Heritage and Hindsight, I share KAC founder William Radcliffe's vision: "The (Kirkland Arts Center) is an institution dedicated to assisting people, young and old, to realize their unique potential as creative beings, and to take this gift to the community of man. - William Radcliffe, founder and LWSD Art Director, circa 1962

Radcliffe had the vision, along with ten others, to purchase the historic Peter Kirk Building in 1961 and create such an arts center. KAC is thriving because of dedicated volunteers, boards, artists, and staff who have nurtured Radcliffe's vision, and stewarded KAC's home, which would have been demolished without Radcliffe's vision. For over 57 years, in good and bad times, KAC has been essential to so many lives and our community as a whole. Gallery exhibitions in 2020 will ask us to ponder KAC's heritage: What would the visionary founders of KAC tell us today? What would they share in hindsight? What would they do differently? What would they want us to do today for future generations? We don't have to wonder. We still have the legacy of these leaders in our community today. Leaders such as Kim Radcliffe, the daughter of founder William Radcliffe, and Merrily Dicks, KAC's own historian who has supported KAC since the very beginning, and many others. I look forward to deepening our connection to the past to inspire the future with our board, staff, students, and broader community in 20/20!

KELLY DYLLA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

THRESHOLD KAC GALLERY

GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Friday 11 AM – 6 PM Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM Closed Sundays and Mondays

JANUARY 7 – FEBRAURY 15 OPENING RECEPTION 6PM ON JANUARY 10

Throughout 2020, the Kirkland Arts Center's exhibition schedule will tie back into the theme of Heritage & Hindsight. To kick off the year we’ll begin with an examination of where we are in this moment in history. As we stand on the threshold of the present we ask “How did we get here, and what is the future going to look like with the foundation we’ve laid?” Two exhibiting artists will be chosen for $150 JUROR'S CHOICE AWARDS and one artist will receive a PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD of a small solo exhibition in 2021. Jurors: KAC’s exhibitions team Kelly Dylla, Executive Director; J. Gordon, Curator and Exhibition Designer; Geneva Rose Baldauf, Exhibitions and Education Coordinator The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery supports local artists and curators by providing a space for engaging exhibitions. These shows inspire art appreciation and creativity in the Kirkland arts community. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public, including our opening receptions.

WHO SUPPORTED YOU IN BECOMING AN ARTIST? I had several professors at the University of Washington who helped me connect with the larger printmaking community, both while I was in school and after graduating. That was a big deal for me, since I doubted my ability to make ends meet as an artist in an expensive city like Seattle. They gave me the connections and confidence so that I could make it work.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST?

NIKKI BARBER

Learn more about and see her works at nikkibarber.com

INTERVIEW Nikki Barber is a Seattle-based printmaker, focusing on the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest. Nikki loves traveling and translating little moments of journeying into 2-D prints. She is working to connect printmaking communities and foster international relations. Recently, she spearheaded an invitational cultural and artistic exchange between printmaking communities in Thailand and the Pacific Northwest, co-curated by Seattle Print Arts, and with support from Davidson Galleries, Pratt Fine Arts Center, and C.A.P. Studios. She graduated from the University of Washington with an Interdisciplinary Visual Arts degree with a focus in printmaking, earned simultaneously with her degree in Biological Sciences. She is represented by MESH Fine Art in Chicago, IL.

I was seven years old and it was career day. I told everyone I wanted to be an artist. The consensus was that I would never make any money as an artist and should pursue the medical field instead. The next moment happened when I was at the University of Washington and school advisors told me I could not take studio art classes at the same time as science labs. I told them I am going to anyways, so I can become both an artist and researcher. Then, they let me. The most important moment, though, was after working in the behavioral sciences for a couple of years, while making prints everyday after work. I realized I needed to drop my day job and move into the printmaking world full time, both through teaching and selling my work.

WHAT EXCITES OR INSPIRES YOU? I love what I do. I get to connect with people over printmaking and making things. Every day. Some days, I don’t want to get out of bed, but then I remember how awesome I get to make my day.

DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT-BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS. I want to co-own a maker’s space where people can work on printmaking, woodworking, ceramics, glass, post digital processes, etc. My dream is to have it set up as a co-op with equal access for anyone who wants to join. My hope is to have artist residencies for both established and emerging artists, local and international.

WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS?

Do what makes you happy, treat others with kindness, and things will fall into place.

GALLERY EXHIBITIONS - MAJA SEREDA

Marymoor Heronry mixed media on paper

HOME REIMAGINED KIRKLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY

DECEMBER 13 – FEBRAURY 14 Maja Sereda renders detailed mixed media drawings on paper. Her fascination with details germinated in childhood and continues to this day. Her current body of work is a reflection of her personal relationship with nature, her creative process and her philosophy. Her drawings are "collectives" of eyes, plants, animals, bugs and more, living individually as well as together, creating a tightly knit fabric of our environment/our home. HOME REIMAGINED looks closely at Pacific Northwest birds and their homes, and how humans are making an impact on that delicate structure. Maja Sereda is a KAC teaching artist whose focus is on nature and animals. Learn more about Maja and see her works at www.majasereda.biz 11
