The Power of Artists
Artists are the soul of Kirkland Arts Center. Teaching and exhibiting artists guide us by sharing their particular viewpoint of the world through a visual experience. At times their visual choices calm us and others inspire or energize. Their goal is to help us understand ourselves and one another better through visual discovery. We are so lucky to have art and artists in our lives! Supporting artists is integral to our mission. We bring hundreds of artists’ works to the public, including the Kirkland Art Studio Tour on May 12-13 and Best of KAC Exhibition in the Peter Kirk Gallery, opening on May 8. Clay? VII, an international ceramic exhibition juried by UW ceramics professors Doug Jeck, Jaime Walker and Michael Swaine will open July 17th. Additionally, we are partnering with Artist Trust to bring their businesssavvy workshops to the Eastside. Our first Artist Trust workshop will be on May 22nd and is titled “Grant Writing for Artists”. This is a very exciting new partnership and we are looking forward to launching a full series in the fall. Best Regards,

TELL US ABOUT YOUR KIDS.
CHE LOPEZ INTERVIEW Che Lopez is Pacific Northwest Chicano Teaching Artist and a graduate of Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. He is currently the President of the Northwest Watercolor Society. But most days you can find him at home taking care of his two children. Che has worked as a Traditional Animator, Graphic and Web Designer, Illustrator and Fine Artist. Diversity is the key in life.
IS IT TRUE YOU RAN A BOXING GYM?
I have two very beautiful children, Milagros (8), and Cuauhtémoc (2). From time to time I do bring them to class with me. I want them to know what their papi does for a living. My youngest, Cuauhtémoc has Down Syndrome, so the challenges of raising a child with special needs can be tough at times. But I love to see him make big steps as he learns to walk and begins to talk more. Lucky for us he was born with a strong heart and spirit. My wife and I put in a lot of energy into his early development. As a parent of a child with Down Syndrome (DS) I am always aware when I see someone with DS in my community, and always stop and either talk with the parents or the person. We are really one big family and I want to support my DS community the best I can. I want to be more involved with the DS community once my duties with the Northwest Watercolor Society are over this year.
WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING? Ha! My kids. I feel blessed that I can be there for them when they wake up, make them breakfast, and take them to school. I don’t paint too much in my studio anymore. Teaching has also changed the way I work. It’s no longer a solitary thing for me I have to paint in a group. I do meet with a few of my friends / students and we paint together for a few hours in-between quarters. I love seeing the work my students create when they paint something that they really like.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT.
I did, I ran Team Eastside FC in Redmond for close to 10 years. I trained USA Boxing Amateurs along with Muay Thai and MMA fighters. Those 10 years were some of my fondest memories, I met my wife and my oldest grew up there. It was an amazing experience, I still stay in touch with a lot of my former students and coaches. They now have families of their own and that to me is truly rewarding.
My goal is to travel the world teaching workshops, I love plein air painting. I don’t really take pictures anymore, I just set up my easel and capture the view. I always tell my students to sketch while they are out and about, that way you remember the place.
WHAT MADE YOU TRANSITION TO VISUAL ART?
Don’t get discouraged--if that is in the ring or in the studio, when you get knocked down get back up and fight on.
I was always an artist, in High School I was Captain of the Football team and President of the Art Club. To me art has always been part of my life, I love the freedom that it gives me. I am very blessed to make a living as a Teaching Artist.
