POWER OF ART. Two Stars and a Wish One of our youth teaching artists, Carl Claussen, asks students to reflect on their artwork by offering two stars and a wish – what are the two things you like, and what is one thing you wish for? It’s a brilliant way to help young artists – and anyone really – to learn to appreciate their hard work and accomplishments within a growth mindset. As we enter into the winter season, I would like to share my “two stars and a wish for KAC” My first star is to appreciate YOU for being a part of the KAC community. When I first came to KAC, I knew it was a very special place, where anyone is welcome, regardless of age, race, income, and, importantly, artistic ability. The KAC community embraces not only diversity, but inclusivity, by actively inviting new people into our community and partnering with schools and civic organizations to meet people where they live. My second star is gratitude for the financial support we receive from individuals, foundations, and government entities. This financial support allows us to provide over $30,000 in scholarships to adult and youth students taking regular classes, workshops, or summer camp. It also allows us to keep our gallery free to the public year-round and offer free artmaking opportunities at Summerfest and other community-based programs. My wish for 2019 is that the KAC community continues to work towards the Power of Art for all. Over the next five years, we hope to be able to provide more of the incredible experiences – art classes, gallery exhibits, and community art events to more people. There is a need, perhaps more than ever, for art to fill our lives with joy and community. Kirkland Arts Center is a very special place that CAN be a place for all to call their creative community home. If you have not made your contribution to KAC, please consider making a gift to support our low-cost classes and free public gallery. You will be making a difference in the life of at least one person who wants to paint, draw, or see something truly unique.

Workshop for Artists on Gallery Representation with Sarra Scherb and Shayla M. Alarie November 30th, 5:30pm - 7:30pm Seattle gallerists Shayla M. Alarie and Sarra Scherb provide a deep dive on the world of fine art galleries, including strategies for researching and approaching a gallery, brushing up your artist statement and materials, what galleries will or won’t do for you, and the differences between self-promotion and gallery promotion. This workshop is for emerging and mid-career artists who may have had limited, or no prior experience working with a gallery, or those who may be stalled with their current representation. Particular focus on preparing professional materials for review, the gallerist/artist relationship, types of representation, and how to make it mutually beneficial for both sides. This is a FREE event. Free parking is available. RSVP preferred: http://bit.ly/white-box About the Presenters: Sarra Scherb is a gallerist, curator, freelance writer and journalist who has been based in Seattle for fifteen years. She has worked with galleries, museums, publications, and individual artists across the Northwest to publicize artwork and exhibitions, develop and curate shows, and cover the arts scene. Shayla M. Alarie recently left gallery work after fifteen years to return to education. She was the director of the antique department at Davidson Galleries and worked in both sales and administration for Foster/White Gallery. 9
TELL US ABOUT YOUR HORSES.
My wife and I both have been riding horses since about 2001. We rode quarter horse paints doing Western Pleasure at Pinto Shows until 2007. At that time we bought warm-blood geldings and began learning the sport of Dressage. Our horses are getting older now and we board them at a Monroe area facility.
WHAT EXCITES OR INSPIRES YOU?
EARL V. DEWALD II INTERVIEW Earl V. DeWald, II (Val) is a long-time KAC student and teacher from Redmond. He graduated from the University of South Dakota with a BFA in Painting and Photography. Mr. DeWald concentrates in the mezzotint printmaking process and his current work examines the faces of people who are or have been homeless.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART?
I grew up in a very small town in South Dakota. My father didn’t think I could make living making art, but my mother, who is a bit more creative, encouraged and supported me. In my home town, we only had one official art teacher, Richard Bruns, who was a self-taught artist and took me under his wing. After high-school, I learned layout and design for newspaper ads while working for a grocery chain called Spies Super Value. I wasn’t truly happy until I went to the the University of South Dakota where I got my BFA.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE TEACHING AT KAC? I was an art director, illustrator and photographer for the Titsch Publishing Company creating magazines and newspapers. When the publishing industry became computerized, I joined Microsoft to lead technical support for designers and programmers who were creating documentation for Windows.
10
Creating art is my lifeblood. Art makes life worth living. My college years learning art was such a wonderful experience. I was so into everything I was learning, that I would sometimes forget to eat. I now get that same feeling from the KAC. The center has taught me ceramics, painting and printmaking all in one building. Teaching students that are excited about the craft is very rewarding. And I find that I learn the mezzotint process faster while working with the students.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM PROJECT--BIG, PIE-IN-THE-SKY, NO LIMITATIONS. I would like to create an international mezzotint festival here at the KAC. I’d like to invite mezzotint artists from all over the world to submit their work and coordinate mezzotint workshops and demonstrations. I want to find grants to provide visiting artist residencies to bring international printmakers to the Pacific Northwest. These activities will promote knowledge of the mezzotint process through the KAC printmaking program.
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH ARTISTS?
You are never too old or too experienced to learn. You should never stop learning, push your boundaries, no matter what process you’re trying to accomplish. Take classes in different mediums. When you take an artist out of their comfort zone, it challenges them, injects and informs their visual perspectives with new vigor and will ultimately improve their primary art form. Teach if possible, you’ll learn as much from your students as they learn from you.

KIRKLAND ARTS CENTER GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
A BODY AMONG BODIES KAC GALLERY
GALLERY HOURS Tuesday – Friday 11 AM – 6 PM Saturday 11 AM – 5 PM Closed Sundays and Mondays
JANUARY 23 – FEBRAURY 16 OPENING RECEPTION 6PM ON JANUARY 25
Just what IS a body, anyway? A house for the spirit? An object? A moment within pattern? Maybe all of the above? Something totally different? What do YOU think? The artists included in A Body Among Bodies all seek, in quite different ways, to explore the dynamic of existing as a physical being. Featuring the art of Larry Calkins, Dana Mattson, and Meredith Hamm, the exhibit engages the senses and invites the viewer to enjoy delving into their own understanding and experience of being a person in the world, a body among bodies. The Kirkland Arts Center Gallery supports local artists and curators by providing a space for engaging exhibitions. These shows inspire art appreciation and creativity in the Kirkland arts community. The KAC Gallery is free and open to the public, including our opening receptions.
